Preferred Solution: ThinkPad W540 Work with Sierra EM7345?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: ThinkPad W540 Work with Sierra EM7345?

Since it is listed in the official parts-list for the W540: Yes. However, you will need a Lenovo branded card (04X6014, which is the Sierra Wireless EM7345 LTE/HSPA+ 42Mbps M.2 Card).

Hi all,I've really been helped by this forum in the past, and really hope you can help with this issue.I've installed the card and installed the driver - all of which has gone down without a hitch. The compute recognises the card with no issues. Unfortunately, however, when a simcard is inserted it does not register the simcard whatsoever - 'Insert sim' is still present. In my searches on this forum it seems this problem is Windows 10 specific - the system does recognise the wireless card but does not recognise the simcard reader. Anecdotally, it seems to work for others when using Windows 7 (although that wouldn't be a fantastic solution in my situation.)Is there any solution for this?Thank you in advance for your time and any responses!Jack

Hello, jraynerwin10 doesn't need wwan card's manufacturer drivers for the normal mobile connection, it has a native support that. Additional drivers are needed for the legacy location features via NMEA port, for the custom wwan card virtual devices configuration (like NDIS port etc). So, the 1st thought modem firmware is outdated. Check it out:open command prompt window (cmd) and type in the following stringnetsh mbn sh cap int=*Copy and past an output here (remove Device ID for your privacy).Another version is connection settings, APN mainly. Do you see a cellular network item in the win10 network settings?Anyway, I hope mobile device em7345 is present in the Device Manager w/out errors.

Hi there, I have a W541 with Sierra EM7345.I had and now have a lot of problems with the WWAN-Card, and more like you can read here: https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-P-and-W-Series-Mobile/W540-Freeze-on-boot-screen-when-connecte... And now i cannot reinstall the driver because it's not supported for Windows 7 x64 any more:Sierra Wireless EM7345 Software for Windows 10 (32-bit, 64-bit), 8.1 (32-bit, 64-bit) - ThinkPad Now I have supported hardware with no driver available?!

Answer:ThinkPad W541 no driver Win7x64 support for Sierra EM7345 any more?

Hi aschulte,

If you have a W541 then you need the driver for the EM7355 card; that's what should be in the system unless the parts list and psref are mistaken.

I have a T440 with Sierra LTE. It works just fine for connecting to mobile networks. But here in New Zealand, one of our providers also provides free wifi hotspots to customers on certain plans. In order to use this though, I have to enter a password that is sent to me by SMS.Is there any way that I can view SMS messages sent to the SIM card that is inside my laptop? At the moment, I have to remove the SIM from my ThinkPad (with all the hassle that involves), stick it into my phone, get the password, then transfer the SIM card back into my ThinkPad (and often as not, there is no power socket nearby, so I can't restart because I had to disable the internal battery when removing/replacing the SIM card). So, if someone can point to a way that I can simply view those SMS messages on my ThinkPad, I will be enernally grateful.

Is it really any good and practically beneficial?2. Can I use it on Fedora 27, How?s Linux support?3. X250 has two PCI Express M.2 card slot and one is already occupied by WLAN Card and other slot is available, Can I use empty slot for FRU-04X6014?4. Can I use both WLAN and WWAN simultaneously?5. What is the impact on battery (Windows and Linux)?6. Is AliExpress a good place to buy? Thankyou

Answer:Sierra Wireless EM7345 4G LTE Mobile Broadband FRU: 04X6014 for my ThinkPad X250

Regarding your questions:1) I personally use it and it's really good, as I don't want to use additional USB modem or WWAN wireless router.2) Can't say, as I don't use Fedora.3) There's a dedicated port for this module. Please make sure, that you have an antenna connectors for module and adapter for a SIM card. Moreover, instead of WWAN module, you can install there a m.2 2242 SSD disk.4) Both can be enabled and connected, but application will use one at time.5) I have an extended battery, so it's hard to tell. I guess it have a simmilar power usage as WLAN module (basing on Windows power utilization). Can't say about Fedora.6) It you don't want to have a problem with whitelist (it prevent system from booting, when unauthorized module is installed), then I look for module on eBay. Make sure, that photos explictly show FRU PN: 04X6014 on module's label. Models without it will not work.

Hello,I bought the Card EM7345 for my lenovo t460s laptop. When I opened my laptop,it somehow seems incomaptible... the wires and the connection point at the card em7345 seems to be male. So I wonder if the card and the laptop could not be used together (it is not mentioned in the hardwarecompatibilty table)? [But other people here at forum report that could be used togetherhttps://www.reddit.com/r/thinkpad/comments/4aawmj/t460s_wwan/ ?] Or another stuff necessary to connect to laptop and card? Thanks!

WARNING!!! The instructions in this post are applicable only to EM7345 installed in Lenovo laptops!! For example, models T440, X240, X1 Carbon 2nd and 3rd gen, X250. For tablets or other devices don?t use the firmware given in this post, you can brick your EM7345! Unfortunately, the default factory EM7345 firmware version  (1.1) has some bugs. For example, after connecting to a LTE network and then disconnecting manually, the network status of the connection was changing for me to ?No service? until device restart. Also, the device often disappears from Device Manager and reappears there with the name ?1 CDC? and does not work until you disable and then enable it again in Device Manager. All those issues are caused by some bugs in EM7345 firmware. But there is a newer version of firmware, namely 1.2, where the above bugs are fixed. But by default, you cannot flash it, because firmware updating is supposed to work unattended. And this is not nice of Intel and Lenovo. The users must be able to do firmware updating when they need or want it! Bad, bad Lenovo, very bad! Here?s the instructions of how to flash your EM7345 to the latest version:Make sure you?re using Windows 8 or 8.1Go to the control panel and uninstall Sierra Wireless EM734x 4G LTE Software from Program and Features.Reboot your laptop.Download and install the latest EM7345 driver package from the Lenovo website. http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/products/laptops-and-netbooks/thinkpad-t-series-l... How to flash the firmware of the sierra wireless em7345 on windows 10 ?  Its not possible through the steps i could find which was only for widnows 8.

Answer:Sierra Wireless EM7345 windows 10

HiOnce the modem drivers are installed, including Intel flash tool, and the sim card inserted, during laptop cold start the flash service checks out whether newer firmware is available according to current modem fw and the sim card data (more clearly, cellular operator MCC/MNC values), and performs the flashing process if it's needed, in auto mode. You should see appropriate notification from the flash service in the system tray.

I have googled a bit and I can say that:1) I have the drivers OK, I have the WWAN network adapter etc.2) I have inserted the SIM card correctly The SIM card works perferctly if I use the USB 3G stick instead. So the problem is not in the SIM card.I think there is some configuraiton of the Sierra modem which should be done - to switch to 3G/2G or something. Please help - one of the main reasons to buy this laptop was the embedded WWAN. Thanks. I am using the EM7345 in my X1 carbon 2014 on a daily basis. It works flawlessly with my local 4G SIM. If I have understand correctly EM7345 is made specifically for Lenovo based on their requirements and specifications. Lenovo is also responsible for this firmware....on Carbon X1 etc...   I found an interesting AT command for Sierra Wireless EM7345. The command is ?AT+XCIQ?. There?s the following text string in EM7345 firmware file (it is present in any version so far): +XCIQ CIQ: Carrier IQ enable/disable.Let?s try to get ?help? about this command:  AT+XCIQ=? +XCIQ: (0-1) OK1234AT+XCIQ=?+XCIQ: (0-1) OKSo, we can suppose that 0 disables this Carrier IQ feature, and 1 enables it.Let?s read the current setting of this feature: AT+XCIQ? +XCIQ: 1 OK1234AT+XCIQ?+XCIQ: 1 OKLooks like it?s on by default. Let?s try to switch it off?NOTE: If you?re running firmware earlier than 1522.02, don?t enter the following command! If we try to enter: AT+XCIQ=01AT+XCIQ=0i.e try to disable Carrier IQ, EM7345 will have a fatal crash and reboot into boot flashing mode and it will be stuck there for good. So, Carrier IQ is always on and if you try to turn it off using the above AT command, that will kill the device! With firmware version 1522.02, AT+XCIQ=0 returns OK and there?s no fatal crash like in previous firmware versions. Also AT+XCIQ now accepts 3 possible values with 1522.02 firmware: AT+XCIQ=? +XCIQ: (0-2) OK1234AT+XCIQ=?+XCIQ: (0-2) OKSo, 0 must be disable, 1 enable, and what is 2? Any value gets OK response and t... Read more

Hi, jkuengWhat's the OS installed on your laptop? For win8/8.1 there are no needs for drivers if the card is in MBIM mode. It must work natively in OS. Let's check it. Look at the Device Manager, open Network Adapters item. You should see something with AiarCard. Open Properties, Details tab, pull down Options list, find out an item Compatible ID. Looks like USB\Class_xx&SubClass_xx&Prot_xx). Copy the values and past here. Will look.

Also, could you, please, post here USB IDs of this card? Find it at the same list under Hardware ID item (looks like VID_xxxx&PID_xxxx).

Hi Support, I would like to change a setting, so that the Sierra Wireless Adapter only connects to 4G networks. In Windows 10, I cannot see anywhere where I can easily set this. I would expect there to be mobile management software where these settings could be changed. I never want to connects to GPRS, and would like my Sierra Wireless mobile card to only connect to 4G or not connect at all. This would prevent the card dropping down to GPRS when the signal is temporarily weak and force it it to try for a 4G connection. I have had similar functionality on prior USB mobile data cards I.e. Vodafone, and hence the expectation that there would be similar settings on the Sierra Wireless. Thank you, George

HelloI have a W541 running Windows 7 (64bit). I've found 'Sierra Wireless GNSS Sensor EM7345 4G LTE' appearing with exclamation mark icon in the device manager. Lenovo solution center also shows it as disabled device. I have downloaded and installed latest driver (2.17.10870.4454). After installation the device seems fine in device manager but as soon as I restart the notebook the device appears again disabled in the device manager. I?ve just found in the README file the W541 is not listed as supported model by Windows 7. According to this file W541 is supported by W8 or W10 but unfortunately I?m not able to install any other OS on the laptop. Can I expect to have support for W541 with W7 in a future software release? ThanksZoltan

I'm having the same problem with my Sierra Wireless 7345 on a W550s running Windows 10. It came with the laptop, so I'm sure it's supposed to be compatibile. I think it's a driver compatibility problem. Unfortunately, I've just chalked it up to the "Windows/Lenovo" tax - some things work, others just don't. I've gotten no reponse from Lenovo.

Hi , I have updated to the 1607 Anniversary Update in August and noticed that my WWAN Sierra Wireless EM7345 had problems starting up after reboot. Because of other problems with the 1607 I reverted back to 1511 and everything was alright again.A week ago I upgraded again to 1607 and again, my WWAN sometimes cannot start when booting up. The error log shows Miniport Sierra Wireless EM7345 4G LTE, {b343453c-24e6-493d-ba47-33eaec4de5e3}, had event Fatal error: The miniport has detected an internal error (details see below). So this clearly has to do something with the 1607 update or the drivers for the WWAN. I am using the latest drivers from the Lenovo website and have also tried to update drivers in device manager. But no luck. What helps to finally start the WWAN is either a reboot (the chances the WWAN is started properly are about fifty-fifty) or clicking WWAN off and on in flight mode options of Windows.  Maybe someone has an idea other than waiting for Microsoft to fix this stupid 1607? Thanks and best regards,Martin  Log Name:      SystemSource:        Microsoft-Windows-NDISDate:          10.10.2016 06:37:19Event ID:      10317Task Category: PnPLevel:         ErrorKeywords:      (16384),(16),(4),(2)User:      ... I upgraded my Helix Gen 2 to Windows 10 with few problems except for the Sierra WWAN interface to Windows 10 settings. The cellular button on the wireless menu is greyed out and the cellular option page in settings shows no devices. The adapter setting shows the adapter, and on the Settings, Network & Internet , Airplane mode page show both Mobile broadband and Wi-Fi buttons. WWAN can be enabled by truning off Wi-Fi and turning on Mobile broadband on Airplane Mode settings page. With these settings, I can connect to WWAN Verizon and get to internet but:1. Settings, Network & Internet , Cellular shows no connections2. Wireless pop up menu shows Cellular and Mobile Hotspot greyed out. So, in summary, I can connect to WWAN, but only via Settings, Network & Internet , Airplane mode page using proceedure above. By the way, my upgrade to Win 10, switched on the rotation lock, but I was able to fix that in Win 10 settings in table mode.

Hello everyone, I'm a bit desperate because I already tried so much.I'm running Windows 8.1 on my Lenovo X240, BIOS version 2.3 and the WWAN functionality broke about two weeks ago and I'm quite sure that this is related to a few updates that came either with Windows or more likely with Lenovo System Update which had a BIOS update and some driver updates alongside at that time.I cannot even try to establish a connection to the Deutsche Telekom LTE network, because all I'm seeing is "Insert a SIM" in the connection bar. This is what I tried so far:Use a different, well known working SIM card.Re-Install the driver packageUninstall and re-install the driver packageuse the "repair" function of the driver package setupBIOS downgrade from 2.3 to 2.29Disable and enable the WWAN functionality in the BIOSReplace the mainboard (lenovo service technician just went away an hour ago)And I'm still having the same issue. Now it's really nailed down to be either the BIOS or the driver in win 8.1 x64. One thing makes me wonder:When I choose to update the driver in the device manager and the Sierra card details, I'm pointing Windows direclty to the directory that contains the inf files and the device manager tells me that "The best driver software for your device is already installed." and shows me a "Generic Mobile Broadband Adapter". Is this an indicator for Windows completely ignoring all drivers in the setup directory of the driver package? Also, when I lookup the driver details, i... Read more

HelloI got a totally new T450s with Windows 7 preinstalled. I did immediately an updgrade to Windows 10. Now the Sierra cellular modem is not working properly after inserting a SIM card (which works fine on another laptop). It says "Cellular No Service". The driver that is installed is "generic mobile broadband adapter" and not the Sierra Driver. I downloaded the lates Sierra Driver from the Lenovo website and installed it. Without success, it always installs the "generic mobile broadband adapter".Anyone any idea? ThanksAlexander Avidan

Answer:t450s Sierra Wireless EM7345 not working after upgrade to Windows 10

Welcome, Alexander Do you see broadband item on the cellular settings pane? The most likely cause of issue is APN setting missing in the connection profile. What is your operator name and what profile settings do you see?Win10 doesn't need modem manufacturer drivers for broadband access only, it uses built-in drivers. Also, there are default connection profile settings in the OS. If your operator is missing in that base or connection profile settings differ, you should edit profile on the cellular pane under administrative privileges.Anyway, I'm not sure em7345 modem in the Device Manager's "Network adapters" category in the win10 with OS built-in drivers installed should look like "generic mobile broadband adapter".

Ping 8.8.8.8 starts throwing error: General failure. I tried installing newest driver from lenovo support, but situation hasn't changed. I recently purchased a ThinkPad W540. And noticed my connection is dropping every few seconds.

First thing I did was getting a new SIM card. didn't change anything. Now I left Device Manager open by accident, and noticed the EM7345 was disappearing from the list and then appearing again. Does this mean the EM7345 is faulty?I have been unable to install the latest driver. It still shows the inbox Microsoft driver dating back to 2013 in Windows 8.1. I was hoping a firmware update might fix it. But to my understanding Windows 8.1 loads this firmware from the hard disk or SSD upon boot.

I confirmed the network card is also behaving the same in Ubuntu 14.10.Now I plan on calling Lenovo tomorrow for an on-site replacement.

Answer:EM7345 randomly disconnecting in new W540.

When it disappears do you see an unknown device called '1 CDC'  in Device Manager ? It always use Microsoft generic driver because it works in MBIM device mode (IOW there is no need for vendor specific network device driver, except the GPS). What firmware version do you have ? Follow this thread http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-Tablets/Sierra-Wireless-EM7345-ThinkPad-8-and-10-general-issues...

I have a W520 and am looking to purchase a WWAN card.  I see that Sierra Wireless has the MC7750 card available (supports LTE, EV-DO and HSPA+).   Will the W520 support LTE, or am I just wasting my money getting a WWAN card with LTE support?

Answer:ThinkPad W520 and Sierra Wireless MC7750

The short answer: get the MC7750!Probably the biggest improvement isn't the raw download/upload speed of the unit, but rather the reduced network latencies. All the advertisements are only talking about the improvements in MBps, probably because it's the easiest thing to describe to people in 30 seconds or on a billboard. In reality MBps only matters if you are watching video, or downloading large files. Most of the delay time for other applications comes from the several hundred milliseconds it takes the computers to make a round trip communication. Each time you click something on the web, there are several rounds of communication which can add up. If your current connection has a 400ms delay (as mine does) it takes several seconds each time for anything to happen. Some better connections like HSPA are supposed to have about 100ms latency, but LTE is going to push that down to about 40ms.  Can you tell that I'm excited about getting LTE  I'm planning on getting the MC7750 as soon as Lenovo releases it. Unfortunately, every time I call in, I seem to be told that it's just a month or so away. I've been hearing that line for almost 4 months now. I was also told that I will be able to upgrade my existng x220, which had better be true otherwise I'm going to be royally pissed because I bought the system with that understanding. You may find my thread on the MC7750 for the x220 device interesting.http://forum.lenovo.com/t5/X-Series-ThinkPad-Laptops/Does-quot-Bro... Hello, Has anyone tried installation of a sierra wireless MC7750 card on a X220 tablet? I've gotten hold of a MC7750 and intend to install it on my X220 tablet and try it with Verizon 4G network. Thanks,Anand

Answer:Thinkpad X220 Tablet - Installation of sierra wire...

I have not tried it, but I can tell you that most likely it will not work in the default configuration.  Lenovo machines have a whitelist that checks to see if the WWAN card inserted into the machine is regonized and certified.  If the machine doesn't recognize the card it will display an 1804 error.  Since Lenovo doesn't yet sell these cards yet, it's unlikely that this card is on their whitelist. Some people modify their BIOSes to recognize cards that Lenovo hasn't put on their list yet.  I believe you can find such moded BIOSes here: http://www.bios-mods.com/forum/Thread-Removed-whitelist-removal-Lenovo-ThinkPad-x220-v1-21 or alternatively maybe in the forums in http://www.mydigitallife.info/ There may be newer versions of the BIOS in the same forum, but I haven't checked in a while. I've been waiting for months for Lenovo to support the MC7750, or another LTE card like it.  I've been told by several sales people that "it's right around the corner".  Pretty much hogwash so far.  I haven't gone the step of ordering one of these card yet hoping that Lenovo will officially support it soon.  Please post back though if you do end up moding your bios.  I'm curious to know how well it works.  Also read up on taping pin 20.  Some people say it's necessary in addition to moding the bios. Good luck.

Hi Guys,First off, thank you for this very wonderful resource. Now, I will try to make this short and simple and hope someone can help me out.I currently am using a T430s which I ordered a Sierra MC7550 (GOBI 4000) mini PCI card for to have internet (4G) on the go via verizon.I followed all instructions and installed the card without any issue. I booted the notebook and notice a little popup in my tool tray that said the hardware was not successfully installed. I then tried using System update to install the driver which seemed to have installed everything successfully. I opened my network connections and still didn't see the new device so I decided to open up device manager and saw that something was wrong. The MC7750 was listed under "Other devices" instead of "Networking" and had the yellow exclamation point next to it.Currently the exact error is as follows:The drivers for this device are not installed. (Code 28)There is no driver selected for the device information set or element. To find a driver for this device, click Update Driver.I tried manually downloading/installing the driver from Lenovo's site, using System update, manually pointing to the downloaded driver's path and nothing seems to fix it.I am hoping someone could help me here. I'm not sure if this is Lenovo branded or not however I'm not getting any BIOS errors upon boot. UPDATE: After hours and hours of research and contacting lenovo support via phone to no avail I decided to install the MC770 driver (same device, but for AT&T) and downloaded the installation file from AT&T and VIOLA! It installed and I was able to see it in my device manager under Network adapters.I'm not sure if its fully working yet because I had no idea I needed a sim card.. I thought i could just call up verizon with my IEMI number and have it activated... either way I consider this one step closer and it leads me to believe that something is up with the driver download from LENOVO. Also, could I buy a prepaid Verizon sim card and use it in here or? IF this works fully and flawlessy, I hope this helps someone to prevent them from going through what I went through. Hopefully Lenovo updates their drivers.*** I ask that you guys still kindly reply to let me know if I am missing something here. Thanks.

Guys,Im thinking of getting t420s, but the critical condition for me is to be able to plug in Sierra Wireless MC7710,I know that its not on the whitelist, but lets just assume that I can patch BIOS and actually make it work, will be possible technically to plug in Sierra Wireless MC7710 into t420s?Is there a slot for it? And are there enough antenna cords for it as well?I've seen some screens and it seems that Wi-Fi card is using 3 antenna cords and there are only 2 spare whereas MC7710 requires 3 antenna cords?Cords are seen here - http://www.notebookreview.com/shared/picture.asp?f=58673Could someone clarify please. Many thanks in advance !D

Answer:RE: Installing Sierra Wireless MC7710 into Lenovo thinkpad T420s

One of the three antenna connectors on the MC7710 is for the GPS antenna. This could mean that it could work fine with the two antennas that are available.

Welcome to Lenovo Community!

As per the query we understood that you are facing issues with system fan error on your ThinkPad W540.

Can you feel that the laptop fan is rotating at the bottom of the system? If it is not rotating then you have to get it checked with our service center only, as this is an hardware issue.

Hope this helps.

Hello all,I am looking to purchase the W540 with the following specs: Intel Core i7-4800MQ Processor (6MB Cache, up to 3.70GHz)15.5? 3K (2880 x 1620), IPS LED Backlit Anti-Glare Display, Mobile Broadband ReadyW540 NVIDIA Quadro K1100M 2G16GB PC3-12800 DDR3L (4 DIMM)128 GB Solid State Drive, Serial ATA3DVD Recordable 8x Max Dual LayerThat being said, I have a 1TB hard drive that I plan to replace the laptop's optical drive with after I receive it. So do I need to get RAID? I have done some reading about it and have become very confused as I'm reading about two drives only working as fast as the slowest drive with the capacity of the smallest one. I would like the laptop to run off of the 128GB SSD and use the 1TB as basically extra file storage. Thank you!Alex

Answer:Thinkpad W540- Should I Get RAID?

RAID is a technology that can virtually combine multiple drives into one to increase performance and/or reliability. For example, you can use RAID to combine two drives into one with double the read/write speeds. You can use it to completely mirror one drive with another in real time for a redundant backup. Other RAID modes combine these two concepts for even better performance/redundancy.RAID is not a necessity just for using multiple hard drives. You only need it if you are using one its features. IIRC you cannot even order a RAID-enabled system without ordering it with two preloaded drives.

I believe I found a bug on the ThinkPad W540 were the fan keeps spinning very fast after taxing both the GPU and CPU. The fans do not spin down...

This even happens under medium to high loads, but it is only triggered when the fan speed reaches a certain point. I believe TP Fan Control indicates 0x80 for the fan speed. It seems it is stuck showing 0x80 when monitoring the fan speed with TP Fan Control.

It seems I can only spin them down if I start a program that turns on the Nvidia Quadro K2100M or if I shutdown every program that uses the dedicated graphics card, so the card itself turns off.
So it seems the fan only spins down when there is a change in the enabled/disabled state of the dedicated graphics card.

Did anyone else observe this behaviour?

Answer:ThinkPad W540, fan does not spin down

I just spent one hour on the phone discussing the problem of my W540 again. They first wanted to replace the fan, then I told them I could perfectly control the fan with ThinkPad Fan Control. Then he wanted to replace the memory, but since my W540 doesn't bluescreen at all, I am quite sure the memory is still good. Now they want to replace the processor. If the problem is still present after that they want me to send it in for investigation because at that point every component in my W540 has been replaced.Personally I don't see how a new processor is going to fix the fan being stuck at maximum speed after returning from high load of 3D application since it receives its instructions from the Embedded Controller. If you look at ThinkPad Fan Control while the fan is stuck at maximum speed, you can clearly see this is the case. If I switch to software controlled mode and control the fan, I can control the fan perfectly fine. But as soon as I switch back to the BIOS controlled mode after the bug appears, it goes back to maximum speed. The only way to get rid of the bug after it appeared and fix the fan speed after the bug:- Unplug and plugin AC adapter - Unplug or plugin an external monitor- Start a 3D application using Nvidia graphics card and immediately quit again.I just think the Nvidia graphics card is being shut down when you leave a 3D application or game to save power. Hey there all, I'm in serious need of some advice. After 8 trips to the depot/IBM support team, Lenovo has finally agreed to replace my W510 (was still under warranty). I'm limited to configuring a Thinkpad model. However, after some serious research, I can't find many positives about any of the models. Apparently in the last few years, the build quality has suffered. First, I use my computer for basic tasks and run a lot of programs simultaneously. That being said, the furthest I usually push my machine is with Creative Suite. I never do any CAD/Maya rendering. My questions: Has anyone had any positive experiences with the W540?Are any of the T models still worth looking into?I never really used the red trackpoint, but I heavily rely on the trackpad. Will the lack of dedicated buttons prove problematic? Ditto with the keyboard being so far to the side due to the addition of the num pad.Any advantageous alternatives (somehwere around a 2k$ budget). Thanks in advance for any help!

Answer:Regarding the W540 vs other Thinkpad models

Welcome imarsh

1. There are mixed reviews about the W540. They have the best screen among ThinkPads, however there are people who does not like the new keyboard and keypads (subjective).

2. As only ThinkPad W-series comes with NVIDIA Quadro GPU and they provide graphics acceleration for Adobe Creative Suite, I do not recommend other ThinkPad series if you are heavy on Creative Suite.3. Like I mentioned in 1., it would be great if you could go to a computer shop to physically try out the keyboard and trackpad. You could try out any 40 series for keyboard / trackpad, the keyboard / trackpad will be similar or same as W540.4. If performance is not too much of an issue, you could also consider W530, which is trackpad with physical button, and have better battery upgrades option.

I know the answer to this is probably going to be no but I just want to check. Is there any way to turn my W540 on with the lid closed? I use it with two large monitors so it sits under them on a laptop/monitor stand but there is very little room so it is hard to get to the power button at the back. Is there any way to send a keyboard command or something to get it to power on?

Answer:Thinkpad W540 Power On

Hello.

The only method I can think of to start a fully powered off ThinkPad is to set "Power on with AC attach" in BIOS - Config - Power section to Enabled. Then you can pull the power cord and reinsert it to power it on.

Other methods, both resuming it from sleep involve opening up the display to either resume it that way or if the display is open and the machine is sleeping, resume it with the fingerprint scanner.

Hi.  I'm having some issues with my newly bought W540 thinkpad.  Each time Windows 8.1 starts up after a longer shutdown, the UltraNav trackpoint freezes. The problem seems to affect the trackpoint only, i have no problem with the touchpad.Loading the UEFI BIOS setup defaults seems to help, but i need to do it after every shutdown, which isvery frustrating. The problem doesn't occur when restarting windows. Pleas help!

Welcome to Lenovo Community!

As per your query we understood that you are facing the issue with Track-point on your ThinkPad W540.

I think the issue might be with the driver, can you please provide us the driver version which is installed on your system.

Hi, I just got a new ThinkPad W540 running Windows 7, 64 bit. I have two audio issues. First, there is a constant buzzing coming out of the speakers.  It goes away if I mute the speakers, but remains if the speakers aren't muted, or if headphones are plugged in. Second, if I have the soudns turned on, and headphones connected, when Windows starts, the startup sound comes out of the speakers and not the headphones. I have seen the issues connected to my docking station, and when the laptop is on its own. I have updated all of the drivers, but that did not help. Any ideas? Thanks

Hello everyone,At this time I've been having a problem with my Lenovo Thinkpad W540 that I got less then a year ago and I'm hoping someone can help. At this time my W540 runs Windows 7 professional and has 7.63 GB of an 8 GB RAM free. My problem is that anytime I have it restart, it goes no farther then wiping all the icons and toolbars from veiw. This leaves me staring at the blue default background until it simply falls into hibernation. Once it starts to hibernate I can't get the screen to even show up as anything but a black screen. The only way I can get it to start working again is by holding down the power button till it shutsdown. Once I do this though, I start running into problems with it starting back up. This has prevented me from doing proper updates as I need to restart for the program changes to take hold. I've had this brought up and techs tried to fix it remotely but it still hasn't been fixed. If any of you know what I can do to get my labtop working properly I'd appreciate it.

When I arrived my laptop (thinkpad W540) became unable to charge or will simply begin to charge and stop after several minutes.  I believe I have the correct adapter for European outlets and I have tried a charger that connects directly to European outlets and have had the same issue. I have also tried a brand new battery with no success. Answer:Thinkpad W510 and W540 accessories compatibility

Hello.

No, neither the dock nor the power supplies will work. The xx40 series of ThinkPads use the new rectangle tip power jacks instead of the barrel shaped ones, thus requiring new models of both.

Cheers!

Hey all, I've recently purchased an W540 (model 20BG-00CMH) with as far as I know an internal WWAN adapter. I've upgraded to windows 8.1 and downloaded al the latest drivers. Everything seems to be working fine except...the WWAN? I'm unable to determine what WWAN-adapter is built in my model (Sierra Wireless or Ericsson), but when I open device-manager I see (under Sensors) Sierra Wireless Location Sensor. I've installed a SIM-card, but nowhere can I find the adapter or the connection. Everything used to work with my W520 (so the SIM-card is OK). Can someone help me with this? Or is there a way to contact Lenovo support to determine which adapter is inside my model W540? Thanks for thinking with me!!

Answer:Thinkpad W540 - Problem with WWAN in Windows 8.1

It may not be on the 540 whitelist.  I've yet to check.  WWAN is overtly manged by Lenovo.  They suck for this.

But after a couple of times doing so my screen went black really really dim, almost cannot see anything on the screen. I changed the LCD twice but it would still not work. It works perfectly on external monitor. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I've got W540 (32GB RAM, 500GB HDD) running Windows 7.1 64bit that is constantly getting stalled at the ThinkPad splash screen during powerup. It will often stall at the "ThinkPad" splash screen.  Other times it will stall at the "ThinkPad" splash screen with the "To interrupt normal startup, pess Enter" message displayed. I've seen other entries that reference this issue with:- using a SSD, I'm a standard HDD.- a broken USB port.  Mine all look OK (is there a way to actually test them?) I've updated to the latest Bios and reset the Bios defaults with no change. I've run the hardware diagnostic tests and found no errors. When I say "stall" on the splash screens I sometimes find if I leave it alone long enough (maybe 5+ minutes) it will continue to the normal Windows boot up. This is the 2nd W540 out of a pool of laptops to display symptoms similar to this. Anyone got information on what may cause a stall at the ThinkPad splash screen? Thanks.

Hi everyone! For anybody still wondering if it's possible to change your uninspiring TN screen to an FHD IPS one, I can assure you that it's 100 % possible. I did it and it's miles better! Check the video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n-koOqj2ii4 I got myself a wide gamut model that covers the srgb range (Model : AUO B156HAN01.1). Perfect for Photoshop and video editing! It's just a tad darker than the TN one but for the colors and the black levels, it's absolutely worth it. Bought it brand new for 104 $ CAD, shipping included from laptopscreen.com if anyone wonders. I would like to note that this will only for for W540's already installed with a FHD screen. This will not work for HD screen owners as the cable connector is different. Hope that helps someone! Emil

Hello , I don't have the On screen display tab on my Thinkpad w540 Win7So i just can't know if i am caps on / Insert mode / Num lock on ...

Answer:On screen display tab missing Windows 7 Thinkpad W540

Within the Thinkvantage software tools, there is one that controls the on screen display of the keys - [Hotkey Features Integration].  But do not expect to reprogram the keys to your applications. Personally, a visual nuissance. I have them set to flash for 3-4 seconds then off the screen within windows parameters.  Real lights under the keys, like they Fn or F1 key lights would have been a real Worstation soltution.  The on screen is a workaround, and useless when booting up to immediately know the status of your keyboard. Bonne chance..... Using OS Win 7 Pro 64

I just got a new Lenovo W540.  I installed a new Samsung EVO SSD inside to replace the stock mechanical hard drive.  I'm now trying to boot from a flash drive to clean install Windows.  I've done this so many times before on other laptops and desktops without a problem.  For some reason now it will not boot from the flash drive.  It shows it as available in the BIOS but it looks like it reads it for just a second and then goes right back to the screen that allows me to choose which drive I want to put to.  No matter what I try this will not work.  The same flash drive works fine in other computers to boot to. I did check to make sure the USB drive was not excluded in the BIOS and it is not. Can anyone help?  Thanks.

Hi folks,I'm interested in Thinkpad W550s with 3K (2880 x 1620) model, does any one know W540 or W550s 3K support 1440 x 810 resolution? If not, what's the most close resolution then? (e.g.: 1366 x 768) I knew all TFT/LED monitors should run in its native resolution, however I have couple old windows applications which really not coping well in the high resolution, I migh need to turn down (idealy half down) resolution to run the old windows applicatons occasionally. Many thanks for your help.

Answer:Does Thinkpad W540, W550s 3K support 1440 x 810 resolution?

You can create a custom display resolution in the Intel HD Graphics control panel. 1440x810 is not officially supported. But it's the best choice if you are upscaling content. I wouldn't go any lower than this display resolution. In some cases old applications also do not work wel on lower display resolutions. Your best bet may be to download VMWare Player or Virtualbox and install Windows 7 or Windows 8 and then use a display resolution of maximum 1920x1080 and then use upscaling. If you want to buy a W540 or W550s, just grab the Full HD model, I know it is a TN-panel, but on a laptop it matters less than on a dedicated monitor, because you are obviously sitting right in front of your display with a laptop. So viewing angles do not matter that much.

You can't actually disable the Intel graphics. The display is always driven by Intel graphics, and the Quadro just renders frames when it is on, sending them to the Intel graphics to display them.

After 6 months, the bug on my W540 is still not fixed. After playing a game, my ThinkPad W540 does not leave stress mode and the fan keeps spinning very fast for eternity.

When I open the Nvidia Control Panel or any other software that uses the dedicated graphics card, it stops spinning...
It seems to me that if you quit a game when the W540 is in stress mode and the dedicated graphics card is disabled, it cannot poll the temperatures of the dedicated graphics card, and thus stays in stress mode because it probably still thinks it is running very hot (read 65 - 75 C) because it cannot contact the dedicated graphics card to poll for temperatures.

I have had already a fan replacement and motherboard replacement.
