W510 Trackpoint and TouchPad problems

Question: W510 Trackpoint and TouchPad problems

I am having problems with Trackpoint and the TouchPad. I had to disable Trackpoint because it was constantly clicking and opening anything it was pointed at. The TouchPad pointer will not click and open anything, though, oddly enough, it will work if the computer is placed in standby mode for a lengthy period of time. I have reinstalled the original OS and other software several times now, including reinstalling the latest ultra nav driver and have all the other latest updates (BIOS 1.45). I find it unlikely that this is a Hardware problem, but I have not been able to fix it with the software reinstalls. Could it be the SSD? Is anyone familiar with these type of anomalies? Any ideas for a fix? W510 4318CTOQ820 @1.73Ghzwin7 64bitfactory installed128gb SSD12gb ram

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello all,I just got my Thinkpad T420 two weeks ago. Solid laptop overall, but recently I have some problems with my touchpad and trackpoint. There is a big movemental gap of the cursor when using trackpoint, and the touchpad is unusable. This happened once last week but then it disappeared after I disabled and then re-enabled trackpoint/touchpad, changing sensivity... Yesterday it happened again and this time it wont disappear after applying the same method. I tried updating the drivers, as well as reset BIOS (boot to BIOS -> F9 -> save) but none helped. I'm dualbooting windows 7 & arch linux, and the problem is present on both of the operating systems. This is really frustrating. Can someone please give me some suggestions what I could do to get rid of this annoying bug. Thanks very much.

Not sure what a "movemental gap" is...Maybe consider posting a video?

I have a T60 8743, Windows 7 Ultimate. I replaced the touchpad and I am trying to use now both my trackpoint and touchpad, but the latest sofware dowloads and driver downloads from Lenovo are not talking to the hardware. Key points: 1. I see the trackpoint and touchpad enabled in the Bios Setup 2. When I download the ultranav driver, and utility software, no problems for 32bit Windows 7 For what ever reason, in device manager, the harware does not show up. I am looking for som help!

Sometimes, more often then helix is unplugged from power abapter, touhpad and trackpoint just stops warking at all. Keyboard working fine. Sometimes after about 30sseconds of tapping, mouse cursor moves a little, or touchpad "returns to live", but for about 3-5seconds, and then "dies" again. All drivers are updated from Lenovo site with their latest versions.OS doesnt matter, happends on windows 7 and windows 8 both.

Answer:Helix touchpad/trackpoint problems

Hi, mr_Jack

I would recommend uninstalling the current driver and see if it is the driver that is causing the issue. This can be accomplished by navigating to Control Panel ? Device Manager. While in Device Manager, open the tree labelled Mice and other pointing devices. Right-click on the device and select Properties. Next, navigate to the Driver tab and click on Uninstall... at the bottom. This will uninstall the driver, which will allow Windows to install a generic driver. If the generic driver functions without issue, then I would recommend either trying to reinstall the UltraNav driver or giving the Synaptics base driver installed, which can be found here.

Hope it helps,
Adam

Hi, I recently disassembled my Thinkpad W520 to clean out the fan and check a few things on the motherboard and when I put it back together both the trackpoint and touchpads have stopped working.  The trackpoint is attached to the motherboard at the same connector as the keyboard which works fine and I was very careful with static, dust, etc when I dissambled everything so I don't really see how anything could have gotten damaged.  First time I turned it back on the trackpoint worked fine but I had forgotten to plug the CMOS battery back in and when I went back and did that it stopped working.  Not sure about the touchpad, I dont use it much so didn't check it at first.  So far my attempts to uninstall/reinstall the drivers haven't helped.  The touchpad's no longer recognised in device manager but the mouse and keyboard are (and nothing's turned off in the BIOS either).  Is this just a sign of a bad motherboard or am I missing something easier to fix here?  Up until this point everything worked fine other than some USB issues which were do to a physical connetion problem.  It seems strange that the keyboard is ok but the mice dont work. Anyone have any  advice or suggestions?

Answer:trackpoint and touchpad problems - W520

Hello S_Zahara, Motherboards are the most sensitive and delicate part of the computer. It may be possible that when you removed the CMOS Battery, that may have changed some settings in the bios. Make sure the trackpad is enabled in your bios settings. Also, to make sure the CMOS battery is getting a full charge, leave your computer on for 24 hours. If the problem still persists, I would reseat the track pad to the motherboard. Hope that helps.

Hello! Please help me, I've tried uninstalling and installing the UltraNav drive without success.Block trackpoint, and even use a regular mouse. My problem is as follows:The Trackpoint cursor is moving alone. After disabling the trackpoint, I could use the touchpad for a normal time. Then the cursor touchpad is also moving alone. And the same happens with the mouse.Furthermore, the lower right touchpad button does not work as secondary click. Works just like the left, a standard button click. And sometimes not even working. Please help me! This is bothering others. I have to hold the trackpoint cursor to stop moving alone and to use normal mouse. Windows 8.1 64, ThinckPad Edge E430, core i5.Thank you!

I am having persistent problems with the touchpad and trackpoint on my L530.  I prefer to use the trackpoint usually, and found that the touchpad was super-sensitive and caused the cursor to jump around during normal (touch) typing so I disabled the touchpad.  Next time the thinkpad resumed from sleep mode, the mouse was frozen.  Nothing would reactivate it.  I had to switch user, which temporarily fixed it, and then reactivate the touchpad.  If I try and change trackpad settings at any time other than directly after a reboot, the settings are greyed-out and I can't touch them. Right now, both trackpad and trackpoint are completely dead again, but I've plugged in a USB mouse and that seems to be working, so I've given up fiddling with it.  This will be a pain when I'm moving around with the laptop though! The OS is Windows 7.  Yesterday I went looking for the most recent driver, uninstalled the existing one (as per guidance) and installed the new driver.  No luck.   I've heard this is a common problem and apparently installing a generic driver works, but I'm not completely sure what to use.  Anyone know?  Oh, and I'm not sure if this is related, but quite often when I resume from sleep mode the keyboard is also dead.  However, if I switch user it comes back to life.  So annoying but not the end of the world.

Hello, I usually have my laptop connected though the ethernet, so I have the wireless radios turned off. I have my TrackPoint mouse set to the highest sensivity level in both the mouse settings in the control panel and in the ultranav software. When I want to use the wireless network, I flip the switch and the wireless radios come on. Incedentally, when I do that, the mouse becomes less sensitive. So every time I turn on the wireless radio, I have to go to the control panel and change the sensitivity back to high. The ultranav software is not affected. The settings also get reverted to default when I turn on the laptop while the wireless radios are on. Does anyone know how to make the mouse stay at the highest sensivity level regardless of whether the radios are on or off?

Answer:Problem With My TrackPoint W510

hi rgoode, with regards to this, could you uninstall the ultranav software and drivers from your system, then let windows install its generic drivers. once generic drivers has been installed, change the sensitivity settings for the mouse and see if there is a difference when wifi mode is on and off.once done, go to http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/MIGR-74582.html download the latest ultranav software and driver.do a test again.

Hi guys, I'm Alex, newly subscribed user to your Thinkpad forum, and here to ask for your help (if possible) ! Here is what I'm facing right now on my old (but still working like a charm) W510 :Quite happy to move away from Windows 8, I recently accepted to make the upgrade to the newest Microsoft OS : windows 10 64bits. It didn't take long to get used to it and I haven't had any issues with the programs I am using daily. But... I am having troubles with my trackpoint scrolling method. On both Chrome and Edge browsers installed on my computer, scrolling is buggy/laggy/not smooth at all. Web pages seem to "stick" a bit to much which makes jumps every time you try to scroll with the trackpoint. On the touchpad it is better but not so good either. It is really not a big issue but it can drive you a bit crazy after some time... Surprinsingly, scrolling is great on the OS. The issue is only happening on some programs. After looking around on the web, I am pretty sure that the issue is coming from the UltraNav driver. Since everything was working great on 8.1, I decided to reinstall the old driver (UltraNav 16.2.19.14). And as expected, it worked ! Scroll was back to what it was before, but not working on Microsoft Edge. I am using Chrome so I didn't pay much attention to that anyway. But since Windows 10 doesn't let you choose the updates that are installed , the issue came back when Windows Updates automatically installed the supposedly "newest a... OK, T60 Notebook and suddenly the TrackPoint and TouchPad stopped working.  I checked under the ThinkVantage tools and they are enabled.  I checked in the BIOS and the device(s) are enabled there as well.  I've had a TouchPad go bad before but the TrackPoint still worked.  Kinda strange both would go down at the same time.  So, in short: 1.  Has anyone out there experienced this and if so, how did you fix it?2.  Does anyone have the part number for a replacement TouchPad (I've searched the site and could find dang near everything else, but the TouchPad) TIA!

Answer:TouchPad and TrackPoint

They're integrated parts of the palm rest. A cable connects all integrated parts of the palm rest to the machine. So I guess the cable isn't plugged in firmly enough. Remove the palm rest according to the hardware manual and check. If the cable has no problem, contact Lenovo to ask for a replacement palm rest.

Hi all! The new s430 just arrived, containing some annoying problems :/ . One of them is the following: The Touchpad and the Trackpoint are not working at all. I can t de/activate them in the Win7-system-control. The drivers are up-to-date. Could it be a driver/software-problem? Greetings,Bvbnudel

Answer:No Touchpad and Trackpoint

Hi Bvbnudel, Touchpad and Trackpoint are indeed different components, there is a little chance that will fail altogether. I would suggest re-install UltraNav driver and check with antivirus programs. E420S, Cannot get either to work. Cannot enable trackpoint or touchpad in UltraNav.

Answer:Trackpoint and Touchpad

Hi, ezedoh

The first thing I would recommend is the removal of the UltraNav driver from the system. This is best accomplished by using an external mouse to navigate the system. To uninstall the UltraNav driver, open the Start menu and type Device Managerinto the Search box, and then press Enter. Once here, double click on Mouse and other pointing devices, and then right-click on the UltraNav device. Naviage to the Driver tab and select Uninstall... from the bottom of the window. Follow the prompts to uninstall and then restart when prompted by Windows. Windows should install a generic driver for controlling the mouse. This should reinstate the touchpad to working order. If not, then continue using an external mouse for now.

Once the UltraNav driver has been removed, I would recommend trying to use the standard Synaptics driver found here. Synaptics is the company that develops the UltraNav software, so there should be no loss of compatibility/features. I have witnessed several cases where this driver has helped others with mouse issues, so it may help yours as well.

Hope it helps,
Adam

I've had this laptop since yesterday, and all was fine until I started using my Wacom graphics tablet... the tablet itself works perfectly but the Touchpad and Trackpoint seem to have switched off completely [the Touchpad buttons don't work either].Have I switched them off somehow, is it related to using the Wacom? Other similar questions online mention altering settings in Mouse > UltraNav, but this doesn't exist for me. Thinkpad Edge E530cWindows 7 ProEverything should be default settings because I haven't had it long enough to change anything!Makes no difference if on battery or plugged inNo error messages appeared. Any help much appreciated! KtP

Recently I've been having an issue with both my trackpoint and touchpad. sometimes one works and other times the other works. from time to time they both work. it seems to switch when i pull up a new website or open a program. if one works before i open the program then the other will work after i open it. the buttons are the same way as well.. if one set works then the other doesn't but they don't correspond to which pointing device is working.. its kind of random.

Answer:Trackpoint & Touchpad problem

I have just starting having the same problems as well.  It's driving me nuts.  I thought my laptop was crapping out.  Anyone have any ideas what's going on?  I also had the trackpoint touchpad go south on a HP N6400, though in all cases, the Synaptic driver thinks everything is hunkydorey.  I've updated drivers, tried everything.   Whole reason I have a Lenovo is for the trackpoint and if it's going to stop working, then will start looking at a new laptop.

Heads up to potential buyers.  The X300 trackpoint and touchpad are not fully functional when used with Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, MS Access, Remote Desktop, and other mainstream applications.  This is true for both XP and Windows OS.  The built-in pointing devices operate like a mouse without a wheel - you can point and click, but you cannot scroll.  This has been a known problem since June of 2008, and has been brought to the attention of this forum numerous times without resulting in any known action by Lenovo.WFaz

Lenovo released a newer version of the UltraNav driver that shows applicability to every Thinkpad except the one I own.  Has anyone tried the driver version 11.1.21.0 (released in August 08) on the X300?  The one installed on my X300 is version 7.0.1602.5 - this one is shown as being the latest UltraNav driver for the X300 in the Lenovo (lack of) Support website.

Hello, I've bought new ThinkPad t540p recently. I've never used Trackpoint before and found it is very useful. But one thing breaks my happiness about Trackpoint. It's terrible clicking on touchpad. As I know it's common problem. But when I deleted Ultranav drivers and my Windows started using default drivers, I've realized that Trackpoint cursor pointing + Touchpad tap-to-click performance are best of breed. Unfortunately, I've lost scrolling and gestures. Is it possible to configure the same behaviour (Trackpoint cursor pointing + Touchpad tap-to-click) on Ultranav drivers or not? Thank you.

I have a Lenovo T420s.  I bought it in May 2011 so it came with the Touchpad/Trackpoint driver version 15.2.14.0 (6hgx35ww.zip), which is the one also known for its massive memory leak. In any case, with that driver I am able to use the Trackpoint to navigate somewhere on the screen and immediately use the Touchpad if necessary. I do that a lot - I use the Trackpoint to quickly get somewhere on the screen, and then switch to the Touchpad for finer navigation (e.g. to look for something in Explorer, click on a link somewhere, etc). Every version since that verison has not worked the same.  I am now using 15.3.16.1 which doesn't have any memory leaks.  As soon as I touch the Trackpoint, the Touchpad becomes unresponsive to touch for about 1.5 seconds.  Try it.  Put your left pointer finger on the Trackpoint and move the mouse around.  Right as you lift your finger, use your right pointer finger on the Touchpad and see if it responds. It doesn't - you have to lift your finger and put it down again for it to register your touch.  Previously it would register your finger touch on the Touchpad right away. I'm almost tempted to switch back and deal with the memory leaks!  It makes such a difference with speed of navigation. Anyone else have a similar experience?

Neither Touchpad/TrackPoint are working on my R60. I was using it fine about 2 hours ago. Then I drove home when it was in sleep mode, and since it hasn't worked. I have tried to install the latest drivers from System Update under the blue button and also from Lenovo and still didn't work. When I go to check and make sure they are enabled all I get is this:UltraNav has been disabled in BIOS.So when I go to BIOS, it says that it is automatic. There are only 2 options for them. Automatic and Disabled. So what the heck is going on here? Thanks,Mac

Welcome to the forum! Try reverting BIOS to default settings (F9 once you enter it and F10 to save and exit) to see whether that changes anything. Good luck and let us know.

I checked the BIOS setting and it is at automatic for both touchpad and trackpoint. Sometimes even the touchpad does not work. I have to restart the laptop couple of times for something to work. I have tried disabling touchpad in BIOS and end up not having the trackpoint also not work.In the thinkvantage productivity center it says that ultranav is not installed and I downloaded the ultranav update from lenovo website and installed it. Hi there, I've been using a T400 for around a year now. Previously, I could move the trackpoint and the touchpad at the same time (left hand on the trackpoint and right hand on the touchpad). I reformated, installed the drivers for both, and now if I am using the trackpoint and try to move the touchpad at the same time, there is about a 2 second delay before I get any movement from the touchpad. Any ideas? It is a really big annoyance because even if I am using the track point and stop moving it, and then immediately try and move the touchpad there is still a second where no movement happens, and I have to lift my finger and put it back down on the touchpad before the cursor moves. Thanks,-Ben

Answer:Using Touchpad and Trackpoint simultaneously.

I use the trackpoint and usually have both pad and trackpoint turned on.  Normally, i would have my palm resting on the pad while using the trackpoint.  If the pad reacted to my touch while i'm using the trackpoint, it would be quite annoying because the mouse would move unintentionally.  having approx 1-2 sec delay fixes the problem of unintentional movement.   So I thought it was supposed to work that way...

I am returning a brand new W510 thinkpad because of extreme heat at the back left corner with just minimal # of windows running.  It also took 15 seconds to bring up Explore once I'd clicked on the icon, which is a long time.  And the keyboard was EXTREMELY clackity.  The full HD screen strained my eyes and I could seem to adjust it to lower resolution display without words and icons and such showing in almost cartoonish porportions.  So I am unsure what to replace it with.  I am doing 2d graphic work it creative suites and expecially liked the Hueypro pantone color correction built in and touch screen.  So my choices now are to replace with a NEW new W510 with an HD+ screen (1600 x 900) and hopefully a better keyboard and less heat.  Or go to a T510 with HD+ screen and no color corrections system or touch screen but hopefully less heat, etc.  Any suggestions anyone?

Answer:W510 vs T510 after heating problems with W510

I've upgraded from the T to the W510.  Yes the w510 runs a bit hotter at the back, but remember the W is a workstation.  The T510 is a better laptop, the W510 is a powerhouse. The keyboard seemed to be quieter and smoother than on the T510 I had.  As for the sceen-I love it. The colours are too hot, but nothing calibration dosn't fix.  Did you not try the medium setting for the text?  That gives you HD+ sized text.  I really love the screen. The first thing you should always do is dump do a clean OS install and get rid of that Hitachi crap in there.  You can get Crucial SSD's for about £100 now.  As soon as I did a clean install the explorer problem went. Not shure if you have a fulty unit or if you just find the heat too much, but I would stick with the W if you do graphics work.  That screen is better than many IPS pannels-sharp clear vibrant and bringht.  Depends, whats more important to you. A great screen with the abblily to RAM up to 16GB orA cooler laptop with a screen thats a little blue that can only take 8GB. My advise is get a new W510.  Take the drive out, rebuild and see how you go.  Those FHD pannels are like gold dust at the moment.

Have T520, Windows 7 64bit.Latest versions of Ultranav drivers and utility. Both TrackPoint and TouchPad are enabled in BIOS, however, TrackPoint is always disabled, and it shows as such in the Ultranav utility. If I disable TouchPad in BIOS and only enable TrackPoint in BIOS, then TrackPoint works fine, and only that shows enabled. If I disable TrackPoint in BIOS and only enable TouchPad in BIOS, then TouchPad works fine, and only that shows enabled. If I enable both in BIOS, then only TouchPad works, and only that shows enabled in Ultranav utilities, with the checkmark to enable TrackPoint grayed out. Doing Fn+F8 shows all three combinations of options, however, selecting both TouchPad and TrackPoint here does not do anything, and option always remains with Enable TouchPad only.Is there a way to use both TrackPoint and TouchPad? Why is TrackPoint always disabled if both are enabled in the BIOS? Other Thinkpads I've used never had this issue... Thanks.

Sorry for the bump... but this forum is popular and post gets buried pretty quickly... Has anyone experienced this before and have any ideas? BIOS and all drivers are up to date... Thanks.

Answer:T60 trackpoint and touchpad work random!

Hello,

Just to confirm, this occurs under both Xubuntu and Windows 7?

If so, I would say carefully disconnect and reconnect the touchpad/keyboard assembly to verify it is not a connection problem, and if the problem still continues, to replace it with a new assembly.

GreetingsFirst time posting seeing if anyone else is having issues with the X1 Carbon trackpoint/touchpad freezing up on Windows 8.For me it is freezing up every 20min while I am using it, and also when I unplug the AC power. The mouse will freeze up but the keyboard works fine. Usually I am forced to reboot.A USB mouse will work fine during this freeze. I have tried installing all windows updates, Lenovo updates and even system recovery to a date when I didn't have issues but nothing seems to work. Anyone else have this issue? Its been very frustrating owning this x1, as I am on my second one after the first one died on me.

Answer:X1 Carbon trackpoint/touchpad freezing

Hi, changuri

I would recommend trying to install the Synaptics base driver and see if that helps your issues. Synaptics is the company that produces the UltraNav driver for Lenovo, so there should not be any loss of functionality, but it tends to fix issues like this in my experience. This driver can be found here. Try downloading and installing that and see if it helps.

Best of luck,
Adam

Hi,My x220 4290's touchpad, trackpoint, and touchpad buttons and trackpoint buttons refuse to work. I'm having to use a USB mouse for the time being. I've tried to update the synaptics driver to the latest one which unfortunately hasn't helped. At the moment the system runs Windows 10 (has been for the last few months) with the latest BIOS installed. The touchpad and trackpoint don't even show up in device manager where they used to show.I opened the system up to check if the ribbon cable for the touchpad and the keyboard were both seated correctly. Reseating didn't help. Does this spell the end to my x220? Is there any way to fix this? Many Thanks, Saajan

i really want to quenstion myself why i chose thinkpad instead of an acer kind of notepad which is of just half price. my copy of x201i, has a very serious problem with the touchpad and trackpoint, but unfortunately on the irregular basis. intermittently, the touchpad can become very laggy, even when the computer is totally idle. the summary of the symptom is as follows: - touchpad is laggy, trackpoint is only a little bit less smooth compared to regular state (but still consider usable)- touchpad is deadly laggy, trackpoint becomes notably laggy too- after a while (on average less than 5 minutes), the problem automatically disappear- external mouse and keyboard function regularly all the time- cannot conclude in what situation the problem will occur and disappear, hence cannot replicate in a controlled way  and, i have tried the followings, none of it helps get rid of the problem - re-installed most of the drivers using System Update- uninstalled most of the drivers- reset the system back to factory state (win 7), without any additional software/driver/updates installed- re-setup the system using XP, the problem even occurred when i am still in the XP installation screen (the blue one).  i hesitate to go to the service centre because i know i am going to get nothing useful there, especially when i have difficulty in replicating the problem easily. so just try my luck here and hope someone can help me.

So the X240 finally has something I've wanted in my X220 since the start, a higher resolution screen...

But what's got me thinking is that new touchpad, more importantly the buttons for the trackpoint are not physical buttons!

I don't use the buttonless clickpad of my X220, its been disabled since day one, I use the trackpoint and its buttons exclusively... Now I'm worried how these "buttons" will work and respond in the X240... When I'm surfing the net I usually have my thumb on the left click button, and press it when i need to... I can't see that working well on this new setup!

Has Lenovo used this touchpad style on any other thinkpad yet?

Answer:X240 touchpad/trackpoint thoughts.

This same type of clickpad is used on T431s, which has been shipping for several months now.

I have a new T440s which came with Windows 8, and I upgraded to 8.1Nothing strange installed in it. Sometimes touchpad and/or trackpoint don't work at all after turning on, rebooting or recovering from a suspended state. It never fails while the system is running. When it happens, I reboot and it works fine. Already upgraded everything using System Update (BIOS, etc) and Windows Update. Sounds to me as a driver issue, not a hardware issue... but I am not 100% sure. What should I do? Should I reinstall any driver? How?

Answer:T440s touchpad and trackpoint issue

Uninstall the UltraNav driver from Device Manager or Programs and Features. Then run System Update; it should offer the UltraNav driver again.Alternatively, here's the manual download:https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/downloads/ds034647

Hi, I've got this problem for a couple of days now, but I can't resolve it. I got this laptop since 2 weeks now, and everything worked fine, but all of the sudden I noticed my touchpad isn't working anymore. Already tried:Reinstalling the UltraNav driversPushing Fn+F8, as said in many cases, although this wasn't expected to work. I got aeroplane mode under Fn+F8.Opening the UltraNav settings, but I don't get the window as in this link. Instead I get this.Updating the BIOS.Check whether they might be disabled in the BIOS, but both the trackpoint and touchpad are enabled.Delete the device drivers and restart windows.Go to a previous recovery point on which it was known to work.Bring the windows back to factory settings, removing all files.So..But still: it doesn't work. Funny to see is that when I open the system tray icon setup, I can see the UltraNav tray icon and it says "TouchPad = Pointer, TrackPoint = Disabled". Could anybody help me with this?  Edit: while writing this message it mysteriously started working again after reinstalling Windows again and configuring the newest updates for Hotkey. Only now, this happened to me this afternoon as well, but it stopped working again after the external screen was detached and the usb of the wireless mouse was disconnected. Therefore I still post this message for it will probably happen again. Any help on how it could all have started? And more importantly: how it can be stopped?

Hi all, I purchased a T61 back in the early part of 2008, I suppose it's been 7-8 months.  Overall I've been very pleased with the unit, but I currently have a couple of quirks: Since the very beginning, upon startup my T61 will intermittantly not recognize the Trackpoint, touchpad, sometimes both, and very very occaisionally the keyboard.   For the most part it's fine, but when it acts up I have to reboot 1-3 times for everything to work.  My other problem is recent, within the last month.  Battery life has always been good until this point.  I was fiddling with the power management settings and came across the Battery Maintenance feature and performed a battery reset - ever since battery information claims my battery can store 11% of it's full charge capacity and it will last at most 15 minutes.  I don't mind having to replace a battery every so often, it's the nature of anything battery powered, but it seems from my perspective that the battery reset *caused* my battery life problem./ Any comments, constructive criticism, or encouraging words are appreciated.  Thanks, Joseph

Recently got a new Carbon x1, and everything was working fine, but once I closed the laptop and when I woke it up neither TrackPoint nor touchpad was working. Reboots didn't help. Tried installing Synaptics drivers - it said there was no device for update. Device manager detects the touchpad as Microsoft mouse with corresponding drivers (screenshot attached).  Also tried installing update for TrackPoint from the drivers list, it said it needed a reboot to install, after reboot there was an error window that suggested trying once again, several times I saw this message.Anyone have this? Are there any possible solutions?(Searched on the forum, but the solutions were not for my case or didn't work)P.S. It would be kinda stupid for a $1500 laptop not to work because of a touchpad

since i've gotten my x201 i've been pretty happy with it. the only problem i've had with it is scrolling. on some applications such as itunes and AIM the program doesn't scroll. i've read a few entries saying that i have to modify the tp4table.dat file and it does work.my question is why is this necessary when other laptops don't need to do this. is this because synaptics drivers do not support scrolling in those applications yet? also how often does lenovo release new drivers to update support for more programs

Hello keviinf, modify the tp4table.dat file is the one way, updating the ultra nav drivers could help also. Please reboot your system after editing the tp4table.dat file.Otherwise it won´t work.I did some tweaks on my both systems too. Like enabling horizontal scrolling in Firefox.

T510: I had to fix the Yellow DC-Input which fell into the laptop. I removed the KB and KB bezel where the TouchPad sits. I did this using the Hardware Maintenance PDF from Lenovo. Now both the UltraNav pointer and pad do not work and are not recognized in device manger. The only way to get around is via a Microsoft USB Mouse. I am using the latest BIOS. I have tried disabling and rebooting, returning to automatic, uninstalling, taking out the battery and power cable, pressing the power switch for 10 seconds ? etc. etc. When I press Fn +F8 it tells me the driver is not installed, but Synaptics 16.2.19.9 is installed ?I checked both cables under magnification to see if they were damaged. I also looked at the sockets. No bent pins on any of the 4 parts.BTW: I have another T510 in the lab, also running Win 7 Pro 64bit. It works fine. I can connect or disconnect the MS USB mice ? nothing prevents Fn +F8 from working and both the pointer and pad work.I have searched the forum and the internet, nothing seems to work.Any ideas?

Hi to the forum.   I am a newly registered user of this forum but have been using Thinkpads for quite a while (T30, T43 and T61).   The T61  - 8891-CTO -  is rather old by now too and recently exhibited the 1 long and then short beeps and would not boot.   The GPU most likely overheated - a guess.    Following online hints I did manage to get the system back.   However, in the process something must have gone wrong and the Trackpoint/buttons and the Touchpad do not work anymore.  The BIOS does report them both as present and they are set to 'automatic'. Finding some mention of fuses on Thinkpad motherboards online I was wondering if there is a single fuse for both the Trackpoint/buttons and the Touchpad somewhere on the T61 motherboard and if so, could someone please point out where that fues is located? thanks, Anton

So after reinstalling the driver, my T440s Trackpoint is working as advertised, but while it was acting all wonky...something happened. The driver malfunctioned in a good way so that I could tap the touchpad with my thumb to invoke a left-click while using the TrackPoint. Normall, the driver locks out the touchpad completely while the TrackPoint is in use, so that the touchpad only functions as buttons. But the vertical travel of the touchpad is deep and it takes extra effort to depress completely each time. What's worse, the touchpad remains locked out after I move the cursor with the TrackPoint and then stop to leave it over an icon, so that I actually have to move the cursor with the touchpad before it will accept a tap as a left- or right-click. Is there any way to force the driver to let me use taps instead of clicks to inoke left and right click while using the TrackPoint? Also, is there any way to defeat the touchpad lockout? In my opinion, the touchpad itself is excellent as far as Windows touchpads go. They've gotton double-tap for right-click perfectly, and two-finger scrolling is actually quite nice. But they've also overlooked an opportunity to make TrackPoint use even easier and more user-friendly than it was with physical buttons.

Hi everyone, I got my T440s in Dec 2013.  The touchpad and trackpoint worked then, but after a couple months the touchpad would work for a few minutes and then just stop responding.  After a while longer the trackpoint completely stopped working as well.  Now neither of them have worked for months - I've been using an external mouse.   I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers but that didn't help.  When I open Device Manager and click "Show hidden devices", the ThinkPad UltraNav Pointing Device shows up with a yellow triangle "!" icon.  Does anybody know how to fix this? Thank you!

Answer:T440s Touchpad & Trackpoint don't work

Hi Snowmc,

Welcome to Lenovo Community!

As per the query we understood that you are facing the issue with touchpad on ThinkPad T440s.

To proceed with troubleshooting steps please boot the system to safe mode and uninstall the UltrNav driver from control panel ? program & feature option and also from device manager.

Shutdown the system and remove the external mouse and then switch ON the system, after booting with normal mode it will install generic drivers. Please check if the generic driver is also giving the issue with touchpad.

If the issue still persists after performing above troubleshooting then please provide the MTM number of the system at the next reply.

Hope this helps!

Best regards,
Hemanth Kumar

Hi! I have an E460 laptop, on which I'm dual booting Windows 10 Pro and Manjaro Linux (basically Arch Linux) with Linux kernel 4.5.2. Having the same problem that people discuss in the E460 Keys repeating when pressed for 3 seconds thread, I have been bumping my bios to 1.13, 1.16, and yesterday, to bios 1.17, to see if the problem had been resolved. With the 1.17 bios update, my touchpad and trackpoint stopped working in Linux (In Windows they work fine). They do not even show up in /dev/input, and there is no mention of either of them in dmesg, journalctl, /var/log/Xorg.0.log, or anywhere. The touchpad and stick worked fine in bios 1.13 and 1.16, so I'm thinking there is some regression in 1.17. Is anyone else experiencing this? Can Lenovo confirm whether there is a problem?

So, during the windows installer, no mouse. I couldn't see the pointer, neither the touchpad or trackpoint worked. I managed through using the keyboard, then once I got to the desktop I installed the "Synaptics ThinkPad UltraNav Driver for Windows 10 (64-bit) - ThinkPad" driver and rebooted. Still not working. I installed the thinkvantage system update, it detects no updates. I installed the service bridge. No updates. I then made a linux live USB that I use to install manjaro on all my laptops, yes everything worked out of the box on my previous x1 carbon. Touchpad doesn't work, xorg doesn't even recognize any touchpad present. Anyone else have this? Any solutions? This is actually my 2nd X1 carbon; the first works well but the mouse buttons are loose so Lenovo promised waived restocking and shipping with the purchase of a new order of equal or greater value; I ordered another one with plans to return the first one, because I really needed to keep it for work while I waited for the new one. The new one is actually flawless in terms of build, mouse buttons are solid, the CMOS battery is not loose and producing a rattling noise as it is in the first one, and the bottom cover doesn't have the clicking noise that so many are afflicted with. Really I'm willing to try anything to fix the touchpad.

What about the driver listed on the support site of the 5th Gen ? It seems to have some Synaptics driver and even some firmware update for it. Have you tried installing those ?

If you don't have the 5th Gen please specify the model to find the correct support site.

Hello. I have brand new E431 with Windows 7 and I already encountered some trouble. Is there a way how to disable both touchpad and trackpoint? UltraNav driver does not allow to turn them off both and there is not any hotkey feature like Fn+F8 to control a touchpad on my notebook, or at least I did not find any yet.As you see, if aj disable touchpad, then I cannot manage trackpoint options and vice versa. However, disabled touchpad still reacts on press, so it can still cause errors when I type. Could you help me please? Or even better, is there a way to make a keyboard shortcut to such option?

Hi, Finally I got my SL300 extremely fast and I'm very happy with it except for the Pointing devices. Both the Trackpoint and the touchpad are practically unusable because of their significant lag time. The Trackpoint reacts quickly but while moving it hops around jerking. It's like it will stick some times and then it hops and moves on. Otherwise the touchpad reacts much smoother but with a significant delay. If you move the finger left-right-left, I guess there's a delay of 500ms until the pointer arrives.I did notice this behaviour in Vista and XP (both original Recovery left-unchanged OS). I've noticed that this behaviour does not when you're in the Recovery menu while booting from the Recovery CD until the OS gets installed. Hope Lenovo/Alps will fix the drivers. Why didn't you choose the Synaptics pointing devices like in the SL400/SL500?

Hi all Can anyone help me diagnose a problem I'm having with a friends T410. The trackpoint and touchpad buttons have stopped working (both left and right click). I am forced to use the laptop with an external mouse. The trackpad and touchpoint themselves both work just can't click anything, I have tried uninstalling drivers and re-installing but that hasn't helped, have also run Hirens boot cd - Mini XP mode and the buttons don't work there either. Sounds like a hardware issue to me but would like a second opinion before I start pulling it apart! Many thanks Chris

Answer:Touchpad and Trackpoint buttons not working

Hi whitehouse87,
Welcome to Lenovo Community! And happy to have you again.

As I understand that you are facing issue with Touchpad & Trackpoint buttons are not working in T410.
You have tried almost everything & I don't think so its related to software or drivers. You can check without drivers once whether clicks are working or not. Else its a hardware issue for sure

I hope the above information helped you.
Please feel free to post in Lenovo Community Forums if you have any further queries!

Thinkpad Yoga user here.  I'm having a problem when I wake my computer up from sleep (or sometimes on re-boot) the trackpoint and touchpad do not work.  The touch screen is still fine and if I plug in a USB mouse the cursor shows up then. This has been happening intermittently over the past 2 months or so, it is becomming more frequent. It usually requires a hard reboot (where I hold the power button until the machine turns off) before the trackpoint and touchpad come back.  Recently even this hasn't worked every time.  It has come to the point where, if I put my computer into sleep, there's probably a 75% chance the pointers won't work when I wake it up and that it will require multiple re-boots to get them back. I don't know if this is an issue with the synaptic drivers (I've updated them, reverted to older versions, uninstalled and reinstalled but the problem continues). Or maybe it is a hardware problem, I'm not sure. If anyone (preferably lenovo) has any suggestions on how to fix this, I wold be very appreciative. Thanks!

So I have an Thinkpad Edge E520 and for some reason my touchpad and trackpoint stopped working completely last week. I have a wireless mouse, which I am still able to use, but I want to still be able to use my trackpoint and touchpad. When I go to the device manager for the mouse, I see that my laptop doesnt have the Ultranav thing anymore, and when I try to install the driver on my laptop, it still does not show. Another problem I have had with my laptop which may be in relation to this is that my keyboard is acting strange. It will work for a while, but it will then stop working. If i put the laptop to sleep, then wake it up, it will work again for a few more minutes then will stop. I have attempted to restore my computer to factory settings, but the problems still occur. Has anyone else had this problem?

Hi All, I am very upset as my new x61's TrackPoint and Touchpad Button are not working at all... This is my first Thinkpad Notebook. I really have no idea why is that? I have downloaded and installed the driver for Trackpoint and system reboots. And i update the drive from device manager. But the problem still existed.... I am so disappointed... Is there anyone have the same problem? Or can someone give me some help on this!??? By the way, i am using vista business version of OS.... Thanks J.

Answer:TrackPoint and touchpad button are not working, HELP~~~

Wowzer J, that sounds frustrating. It is odd if you have a brand new X61 that the TrackPoint is not working. Did you just buy it from Lenovo? What exactly do you mean by "not working at all"? Even if the Lenovo drivers are not working, Vista includes drivers which will enable you to use the TrackPoint. One of the tricky things abou the Lenovo software downloads is that many of them require you to download, double click the downloaded software to extract it, then navigate to the extracted software folder to run the setup.exe to install it. The TrackPoint drivers first extract to C:\DRIVERS\WIN\TRACKPT.V32. You have to go there to run setup.exe. I'm also assuming that you really have an X61 and mis-spoke when you mentioned Touchpad. The X61 does not have a touchpad.

My boss has a Edge 15 laptop and her Touchpad nad Trackpoint stopped working for no apparent reason.  Is there a keybaord shotcut to enable these?  It is on automatic in the BIOS.  Pointer will not move at all with trackpoint and/or touchpad, works fine if i plug mouse into USB. Help please I am at a loss unless hardware failure.

Answer:Touchpad and Trackpoint stopped working

I have heard of this happening before and the cause was a cable that was not firmly connected under the palmrest.  Your best bet is to call Lenovo support and arrange to have the system sent back for repair.  If you're handy with such things, you could remove the palmrest and check to make sure that the ribbon cables are firmly seated onto the motherboard.

Hello, I have bought a thinkpad l412 in january and suddenly the touchpad & trackpoint are not working. I've have tested under Win7 and Linux both are not working. On win7 when I press fn+f8 an alert appear and say that my ultranav driver is not installed. When I check in bios -> config -> keyboard / mouse -> there is nothing about ultranav or trackpad. Thanks for your help.

Answer:L412 - Touchpad & trackpoint not working

Hi and welcome to the forum m0g,

Check the internal cable and verify it's in place, if so, try reseating it, you can find keyboard and palmrest's removal instructions in the HMM or at lenovo's service video website.

Sometimes putting BIOS configuration to default values also helps.

Keep us updated.

After using the ThinkPad Yoga 260 for about two weeks, both the trackpoint and touchpad are now unresponsive. I've tried updating the drivers, rolling back the drivers and uninstalling the drivers and installing the latest one. None of it works. I managed to get it working once with a BIOS update but as soon as I put it in sleep mode, both became unresponsive again. Under Mouse Porperties the TouchPad option is grayed out and the TrackPoint option is sometimes grayed out and sometimes not. Regardless, it is completely unresponsive when enabled and disabled.

hi all, please can you give me a feedback from your experience on e530 or e430 laptopsa) is your touchpad unit shaking? My touchpad has one milimeter gap, i mean when you tap it is going down one milimeter and this is very annoying.b) are your trackpoint buttons working well on every press you make. My right button has a dead zone. Imagine that you divide the button into four pieces (two up and two down). The upper left piece of the button is the dead zone, so when you press it there nothing happens. The result is that i need to press it harder and at the most right side of the button.Do you experience these problems at your e530-430-330 laptops?

Hi, I just purchased a SL500 from Lenovo. The UltraNav (TrackPoint and TouchPad) is not working. I have installed the drivers via the Lenovo website but still not working. I have always done all the windows updates, and Thinkvantage system updates, but still no joy.  I also installed the UtraNav Utility (which does not even show up under Thinkvantge after installation). Fn+F8 brings up the Mouse properties box, but there is no tab for the UltraNav device etc. I want to try a possible resolution via this forum before contacting Lenovo support. Thanks for your assistance! ***lenovo SL500, Vista Business 32***

Installing drivers from lenovo website was kind of tricky for me, initially. All I used to do was to run the setup.exe file; until someone told me that the drivers gets extracted in another folder in C:\. The installation instructions are given on lenovo website, make certain you are not making the same mistake like me:- http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/MIGR-70341.html Else, I fancy the keyboard might have gone bad, contact lenovo in that case. Hope it helps.

Hello guys, I received my new SL400 and Vista don't recognize the touchpad and trackpoint. All drivers for Vista are installed. Searching in the BIOS configuration under keyboard/mouse didn't found nothing relative to Trackpoint,Touchpad... Is possible that the ultranav system is unconnected to the mainboard?  Any help will be welcome.

Answer:Trackpoint and TouchPad are not detected by the BIOS on SL400

I'd bet on a hardware issue.  If it's a new machine, try using the one key rescue to recover to a factory default install.  Or run a live CD like ubuntu or something on it, which should be able to see the thinkpointer / thinkpad.

After switching to tablet mode in Windows 10, the touchpad and trackpoint are both disabled. I tried disabling and re-enabling it in the BIOS, no effect. Tried updating to the latest ELAN driver, no luck... in fact, there's no option for enabling / disabling the touchpad in the dialog box, and the ELAN dialog box is just a big blank. Tried uninstalling and reinstalling all Lenovo drivers; no luck. I saw some suggestions that I should disable some sort of Intel sensors in the BIOS, but I couldn't find those settings.  Suggestions?

Hey guys, this is my first posting, so I hope I get everything right. So, I have a weird problem. On my T440s, the trackpoint works alright when my computer wakes up from being shut off or standby. However, as soon as I do 2-4 clicks on my Trackpad, the trackpoint stops working. I did all Windows Updates, also did all Lenovo Updates, including of course the Ultranav Synaptics driver (reinstalled that several times, also as an administrator). Nothing worked. When my computer gets back from standby or from being shut off, the trackpoint works, even for longer periods of time. However, as soon as I use the touchpad to click a couple of times, it completely stops working and I can only get it to work again by restarting, going into standby or even installing a new driver (however, it then quits working again after a couple of touchpad-clicks). Any help / ideas would be greatly appreciated...

Is there any way to completely disable the touchpad and trackpoint on the X1 Carbon without going into bios? I am able to disable touchpad OR trackpoint by going into mouse properties in control panel but it won't let me do both.  I would like to turn it back on relatively easily if possible. I am trying to do this on a work computer and I have no administrative rights and I am using Windows 7 Professional. Can this be done or did Lenovo completely overlook such a simple feature?

Answer:Completely Disable Touchpad & Trackpoint on X1 Carbon

you can only do this through the BIOS menu. I guess, the reason it is not implemented in a software setting, is due to the fact that not many people in the enterprise environment requested this feature. Is there a specific reason why disabling the trackpad and leaving the trackpoint on won't work in your situation?

Hello,

I have just received my new X240 Laptop which has Windows 8 OS installed.
For some reason, the TrackPoint is disabled and I can't enable it to make it work.

I checked even the BIOS setting and found that it's enabled just fine.
The touchpad works and I have the latest driver of UltraNav 18.0.7.40 but the TrackPoint doesn't work.

I also tried to go to a previous driver of UltraNav but no luck.

Do you have any idea how I can enable the TrackPoint? under the control Panel it seems Disabled.

Regards,Noam

Answer:New X240 touchpad works but TrackPoint doesn't

Hello, I just really resolved "Famous" issue with Lenovo X240 Trackpoint and wanted to share my experience. In December 2014 I've bought Lenovo X240 and for some time used it with mouse only. Recently I took it the trip and recognized that TrackPoint is not working at all. I had X60s before and TrackPoint was always very userful, so I was very disappointed from new X240. Yes, I've checked it' was enabled in BIOS. Yes, I've tested all available drivers from Lenovo and Synaptics. I even bought new keyboard and replaced it - no result. Finally I decided to check contacts on the way from main board to TrackPoint. Bingo, I found defective soldering and what is pity - both brand new keyboards have the same defect! Please refer to attached photos. Shame on Lenovo, because Trackpoint is solid part of ThinkPad brand for sure. To fix it you need to disassemble laptop in the way that's required to change keyboard. You also need special low power soldering iron with sharp thin adapter, better binocular lens and hard hand like surgeon Smiley Happy Just re-solder contacts from flat cable that goes to main board to designated contacts at keyboard assembly. - I've marked exact place by red figures on attached photos.. To be 200% sure that you identified proper contacts to resolder, take something sharp and touch these contacts that look not well-made - they will move

I have a Thinkpad T440S and have a problem that many have reported. The trackpoint and touchpad initially work upon bootup but then stop working after a few minutes.I believe I've tried everything (uninstall/reinstall drivers, replace keyboard, replace hard drive and do a complete reinstall of all software, update everything, etc etc etc). Nothing works and the only reason I can still use my computer is that a wireless mouse will work. It's time to get a new computer. I've bought Thinkpads for more than a decade but I still see this problem being reported for the T470 so Lenovo can't or won't bother to fix this. Any suggestions for a different brand and model? I do like the trackpoint so does that mean Dell is my only alternative?

I recently bought a refurbished Carbon X1. The trackpoint and the touchpad top buttons don't work. The touchpad and bottom button do work. Touchscreen does work. So far, everything else has been okay. The "Enable Trackpoint" checkbox is greyed out in Control Panel / Hardware / Mouse / Thinkpad tab. After searching forums and web, I have tried the following, none of which have worked:- update all drivers - ensure windows 7 updates are up to date- uninstall lenovo driver and install synaptics driver (didn't work)  then reinstall lenovo driver (didn't work)- disable and enable trackpoint in BIOS (with reboots in between)- reset, power off, and reset via the hole in the base No luck so far. I have a very annoying problem with my T460p: When suspending the laptop and turning it on again, the trackpad and touchpad devices stop working entirely (no response at all). The problem cannot be fixed by rebooting the machine and can only be resolved by completely powering down the laptop, removing the battery and restarting it afterwards. Symptoms: * During  boot, a message "PS/2 mouse not detected" shows up.* The Windows device manager shows the synaptics touchpad as not functioning.* The problem occurs both under Windows and Linux (Ubuntu 16.04) I am running the latest BIOS version and have updated all drivers on the machine. I have also checked all BIOS settings. Lenovo already replaced the laptop twice, but the problem persists, hence I conclude that it's either a problem in all of the synaptics components or related to something else. I have found many similar bug reports in this forum and elsewhere, not only for the T460p but also other models like the T440 series, hence this is not an isolated case. Please bring this problem to the attention of the support staff, as this is something that is completely unacceptable for a laptop in this price range (especially since everything else is working perfectly). The laptop has the following configuration btw: * i7 6600HQ processor* 20 GB Ram (4 GB on-board + 16 GB extra RAM)* 2 TB HDD + 512 GB SSD via M.2 slot* Otherwise standard configuration Thanks for your help!

Question: W510 Touchpad

Just taken delivery of my W510 ... did a clean install of Windows 7 64bit and also installed all the lenovo drivers. The very basic function of pointer and tap to click work great however trying to configure anything else is very hit and miss. I goto the contro panel and UltraNav configuration tab for the mouse ...When I look at the setting for edge configuration or to try and configure click for the 4 corners, the configuration utility detects perfectly every single press of the touchpad .... however windows does not responds ... For example clicking the bottom left corner of the touch pad should display the Windows menu .... and it only works about 1 out of every 20 taps ... same for the other corners (like I said the config software correctly sees the tap). Same issue for edge scrolling too ... Any ideas please?

Answer:W510 Touchpad

Did you try uninstall Touchpad drivers and install the newwst one? my w700 have the same problem before, however, after I completely uninstalled the drivers and reload the newest one, reboot again, it works fine. or after install new drivers, set all setting in default configration to see again. hey won1,uninstall the current trackpoint/touchpad driver for your unit.windows should then install its own generic drivers. now with generic drivers install, place your unit on standby and then resume it.see if the same error occurs. at the same time, head over to >> http://support.lenovo.com and update your unit from drivers to bios.

Hello, I updated my OS to Windows 10. Everything works perfectly except of trackpoint/touchpad. The first issue is really a critical one - trackpoint buttons are practically useless. Single button click causes the mouse click event multiple times - for example opens 6 new cards in a web browser instead of one. I've found another post here describing in detail exactly the same problem but the author didn't get any response, neither from HP nor the community: http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Hardware-and-Upgrade-Questions/HP-Elitebook-8570w-built-in-mou... The driver delivered with Windows (which is also listed as compatible with Windows 10 on HP's 8570w support site http://h20564.www2.hp.com/hpsc/swd/public/detail?sp4ts.oid=5257503&swItemId=ob_152050_1&swEnvOid=419... version 19.0.12.0, causes the problems I mentioned earlier. The updated one from Synaptics website (19.0.19.1) additionaly prevents the OS from detecting the middle button... Additionally, the only gestures I can use are the basic ones - no advanced 3- or 4-finger ones (please don't tell me that the hardware is incompatible because similar gestures worked on Windows 8.1 I used earlier). I have a dual boot with Win10 and Linux and on Linux everything works flawlessly, so it's definitely not a hardware problem What should I do to make my touchpad and trackpoint fully functional?
