W530 - Adding 250GB SSD; How to reinstall Lenovo software, Do I need to remove 16GB Cache Drive

Question: W530 - Adding 250GB SSD; How to reinstall Lenovo software, Do I need to remove 16GB Cache Drive

I'd been looking for a new laptop for software development (VS 2012) and ordered a W530 with Windows 8 Pro. Hope to receive it this week. I ordered it with 8GB RAM, 500 GB 7200 Primary HD, 500 GB 7200 Secondary HD and the 16GB mSATA Solid State Cache Drive. My post purchase plans were originally just to add another 16GB of RAM from Crucial and an external Blu-Ray burner since I opted for the secondary HD. However, I found a great price on a Samsung 840 Pro 250 GB SSD so I've decided to remove the primary HD with the OS and install the 250 GB SSD. My plan is to do a clean install on the SSD after burning the restore/recovery discs. I've done plenty of clean Windows XP/7/etc installs before, but not sure about getting some of the other software like the Finger Print security working again. Also, do I need to physically remove the 16GB Solid State Drive? If I simply leave it in the system, but don't install or configure the ExpressCache software, is that ok? Thanks for your help.

Preferred Solution: W530 - Adding 250GB SSD; How to reinstall Lenovo software, Do I need to remove 16GB Cache Drive

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have a new ThinkPad W530 and I've been getting the warning that 87% of the partition space for my Q drive (16 GB ssd cache drive) is being used.  The suggested fixes (disc cleanup, defrag) don't do anything and the Q drive looks empty.  I did what was suggested at http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/detail.page?DocID=HT074404 and got the results in the second image.  I am not a computer expert, but got this machine because I need to run ArcGIS and other related software. Thanks for any advice.

Hi, I try to install this software for my own 32GB mSATA SSD but it looks does not work.  I wonder whether it is only used for 16G mSATA SSD and only works for Lenovo mSATA SSD.

I have a T530 with 16GB mSATA Solid State Cache Drive. I went into disk management and saw that the system is not using the HHD booster as it shows that the 16GB drive is 100% free. I've been using my laptop for about aweek. Is there a paticular way to active the 16GB SSD to be the drive cache or do I have to set it up? If so, how do I do it?   Thanks!

Hi, does anybody have instructions, or can point me to an article, to safely remove the original 32Gb mSata cache drive configured to accelerate the HDD drive etc. so the desktop will boot cleanly from the HDD drive alone. I know it involves RST and possibly BIOS settings. I am looking for the exact steps as I have had bad experiences removing (and adding) 32Gb mSata cache drives in the past. System fails to boot ... Note I do not need any guidance on physically removing the drive and for the curious once I have a clean boot from HDD alone I will clone the drive to SSD (2.5 which I already have) so the 32Gb mSata is redundant and I would like to remove it completely. I am also interested in any experiences and/or any complications doing this. Thanks.
These instructions can be for any Dell desktop, the desktop in question is a Dell XPS 8700.

Answer:Exact software steps to remove the 32Gb mSata cache drive in preparation to replace HDD with SSD.

You should be able to disable acceleration in the Intel utility, I believe on the Performance tab..  The mSATA should show as a separate drive in Disk Management after the configuration has been changed.  I assume you know where the Intel Utility is but if not, look at the hidden icons on the Taskbar.  Right or left click, whatever it takes to show the option to open.
When you do this, give it time to unwind the configuration and you may see a message regarding such.  Then if you want to reset the mSATA you can do that.

You can easily add more power. I think I may have found the answer:The 16GB mSATA disk is managed by Expresscache which caches large or often accessed file for fast use. If I want to use the mSata for files, I just have to uninstall Expresscache and reformat the mSATA SSD dirve.Alternatively, I can exlcude drives from being managed by Expresscache (If you have an SSD boot drive, it is better to exlcude it since Expresscache can slow it down). There is no GUI but it can be done rthrough CMD:- Open CMD with admin privilege- Type eccmd ? to know what the commands are- Type eccmd -exclude c: (to exlcude my SSD)Any other thoughts someone?

So I recently ordered a w530 with a factory installed 16GB ssd mSata cache drive. I did some research and to me it seems like I either need raid to be enabled or a program called expresscache to be able to run this drive. However, my raid configuration is not enabled and I installed expresscache but Lenovo is refusing to provide me an activation code even though there is a service document saying that some machines left without this software installed. http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/detail.page?DocID=HT074404 Am I missing something?   I7_3720QMIntel Core i7-3720QMWIN8_P64Windows 8 Pro 64WIN8_P64_ENGLISHWin8 P64 English4GB4GB4GB4GB_1280016 GB PC3-12800 DDR3 (4 DIMM)500GB7200RPM500GB HDD 7200rpmRAMBO_UBE_W8_SWRDVD Recordable, UBE W8 w/SWR9CELL_TWL70++9cell LI Battery TWL70++BT_2012Bluetooth 4.0 w/ antennaINTEL_CUN_6300Intel Centrino Ultimate-N 6300WWAN_UPGRADABLEMobile Broadband upgradable1YEAR_DEPOT1 Year Depot/Express WarrantyNONENONE16GBMSSD_W816GB Micro SSD SATA3 Win8170W_AC_SLIM_AG170W Slim AC Adpt US (2pin)ENABLEDSecurity Chip EnabledKYB2_BL_SPANISH_LAKYB2 (Backlit) LA SpanishMSOF2013HB_ENGLISH_NAMSOF2013HB English NANONENONENONENo PreloadNONENONENONENONENONENONENONENONENONENONENONENONENONENONENONENONENONENONENONENONENONENONENONENONENONENONENONENONENONENONENONENONENONENONENONENONENONENONENONENONENONENONENONENONENONENONENO_RAIDInternal RAID - Not EnabledPUB2_ENGLISH_USPub2; US EnglishTW530_EXP_4IN1TW530 Exp CS &a... I saw somewhere that you could add an mSATA drive to the W530.  But can you then make that your boot drive?  I want to add an SSD but am deciding either an MSATA drive or a regular SSD.  I'd like to keep my old hard drive as abackup (probably even leave it in the system if I can get an mSATA to boot the OS from itself). Any ideas or instructions on how to get this to work?  I'm thinking I need at least a 500 GB drive (i tend to run a lot of VMs on my laptop).

Answer:Adding mSATA to W530 as boot drive

It's easy peasy.  Just be aware that the msata slot is only sata II so it's limited at 3Gb/s.  The hardest part is selecting the best msata, but I'll even do that for you...get the Plextor M5M or the Samsung EVO if you need 1000 GB of space.

Hi,I've ordered a Thinkpad S540, without the mSATA cache drive as I wanted to install a bigger drive by myself. I'm wondering if doing so would void my warranty. Thanks in advance!

Answer:Will adding my own SSD cache drive void my warranty?

Hi Nithin32,

Welcome to Lenovo Community!

As per your query we understood that you are looking to change the HDD drive to SSD on ThinkPad S540.

SSD upgrade will not void the warranty but you may not be able to get support if something goes wrong with the upgrade (i.e. the OS won't load / install, some proprietary Lenovo software?s won't work, etc.).

Also, depending on the place where you purchased the unit, some stores put a warranty sticker on the screw slots so any signs of tear will automatically void the warranty.

Hope this helps.

Best regards,

Hemanth Kumar

Hi,I just got my Y400 today with a 16gb ssd as a cache drive. What should be the brand of your 16gb ssd that it comes with? Mine is Samsung, but i heard that someone has a Sandisk one who ordered it a month ago....Does lenovo switch the 16gb ssd to a Samsung one from now on?I also noticed that the transfer rate of my Samsung 16 gb ssd is 3gb/s,But the transfer rate of the Sandisk 16gb ssd is 6gb/s....Does this matter when you use it as a cache drive to boost up the 1TB Sata which has a transfer rate of 3gb/s only? Thanks!

I just got a W530 that came installed with Windows 7 Enterprise 64 (along with a few other things I didn't want) and was given a set of recovery disks for Windows 7 Ultimate by Lenovo after deciding I wanted to do a clean reinstall.  After running through the reinstall process my main hard drive (250GB Samsung SSD) shows up as having 144GB of 224GB free.  Does anyone have any clues as to what might be taking up so much space?  80GB is obviously pretty significant!  I've heard of issues with bloatware, but I haven't seen anything on there that would take up that much space.  Part of me is thinking of getting a Windows 7 facttory Ultimate ISO and reinstalling with my key, but I wanted to put this out there to people with experience before I do anything else.

10-31-2015 @ 4.25pm On the A740, I figured out that it will allow 16GB laptop RAM stick in its single memory slot. However, I did find out that a 16GB single-slot laptop memory stick will work on the A740and will get you to 16GB memory on only one memory slot (which the A740 has). The A730 was easier because it has two memory stick slots (so you could do 2 * 8gb = 16GB),but A740 only has one memory slot.  Therefore, you can not go with two of the cheaper 8gbmemory, because you have to spend more on the 16GB single-stick laptop.  So, hopethis helps other people.

Im thinking of Buying the Beyond Micro External HDD. I am having trouble finding if its compatible with my current pc. The HDD I want says its got an Interface of USB 2.0. My current HDD has an interface of ATA/133.

My question is: Even thought the Beyond Micro HDD is an External USB does it have to have the same interface as my curent HDD, which im guessing is my pc's interface or does it mean that if you have a USB it will work?

The Beyond Micro does say:
Complies with Universal Serial Bus Specification Rev. 2.0.
Complies with T13's ATA/ATAPI-6 Draft Specification
Supports PIO modes 0, 3, 4, and UDMA modes 2, 4
Supports Power Down mode and USB suspend indicator.
Supports Wakeup ability
Works with both PC and Mac
Plug-and-play and hot-swappable connection
Plug and Play
Hot-Swappable

Does this have anthing to do with its compatability with my computer?

Thanks for your help.

Answer:Beyond Mirco 250GB/8MB Cache/External HDD

The USB 2.0 is simply how it connects to your computer and transfers it's data. depending on how much they want for the micro. you can probably buy a hard drive and enclosure from Newegg for alot less.

Have spent approx 2-3 hours searchig HP Tech Support regarding the installed 16GB SSD Disk Cache installed on my computer, without any positive recent solutions. From what I can tell, after the Windows 10 update, the diskcache no longer is installed or working. Using Windows File explorer, there is not an existing internal disk shown. After checking the forum and suggested solution, there seems to be no available information. Does HP support the 16GB SSD Disk Cache OEM product or not for Windows 10? If so, what is the exact info on checking if it is working or if not how to reinstall. This 16GB SSD Disk Cache was ordered extra at a added cost and should be working or a solution available for a fix. Very disappointed in HP for lack of information and or further information.

Just recieved my new Thinkpad W530. I want to swap the optical drive with a caddy with a second HDD. Problem is I can´t get the optical drive out of the laptop. I push the unlock switch and as I hold this I push the release button. I then hear that the drive loosens, but I only can push it out slightly (about 2-3 mm). Nothing happens if I keep pushing the release. Have also tried to pull the drive out, but it wont move. I dont want to use to much force as I´m afraid I will destroy something. When I push it back in it slides nicely into position and I can hear the "click" sound that locks it in place..... Is there a screw or something I have overseen? Anyone that has experienced the same problem and have a solution?

Answer:Not able to remove ultrabay/optical drive on W530

From your description, I am not sure if you removed the screw from the bottom of the machine.  On the bottom of the W530 there is a screw that is about 6 mm from the edge, near the back of the optical drive bay.  That screw is to prevent the ultrabay/optical drive from becoming unlocked accidentally.  This screw needs to be removed.  Then, there is a sliding switch near where the screw was, which unlocks the ultrabay/optical drive.  Slide that switch and the drive should pop loose a little, and can then be pulled out completely.  I recommend doing all of this while the machine is powered OFF and with the battery removed, just to be careful. I have done this several times while exchanging hard drives.  It should be very easy, so if it is not then something is wrong.  You may want to get the hardware maintenance manual from support.lenovo.com for your machine, which gives diagrams for basically anything you can do to this machine. Good luckJohnV474

The 16GB SSD Cache on my X240 seems to have developed fault as diagnostics and event viewer messages point to bad blocks on the SSD. I wish to remove it but have not been able to locate it on the motherboard.  Also the hardware manual does not seem to show the location of the SSD Cache. The SSD is a SanDisk U110 16GB. In the Parts Lookup it is listed as 16G,M.2 2242,SATA6G,SDISK,STD. Could it be located where the hw manual shows the "Dummy smart-card-reader assembly, smart-card-reader assembly,or the 3rd NGFF adapter"? Thank you. JG

Hi all, and TIA for any and all replies, I'm looking to upgrade my existing DVD RW drive in my W530 to a BD drive. I see them on eBay for around $100 +/- and they list them as being compatible with the W530. Instead of taking their word for it I thought I would ask here as the Lenovo guide does not list this drive as being compatible. Anyone using this drive with a standard BIOS? Thanks, Perry

Answer:Using Lenovo 45N7463 Blueray drive in W530

BIOS shouldn't complain about it. There's the off chance the drive might not fit snugly, but usually that can be fixed by moving a bezel from the stock optical drive.

How does one replace the 16GB SSD cache used to supplement a standard HDD used in AIO desktops.  Does it need to be exact part?  What size is it?  There are numerous form factors on Amazon, Ebay,  and part suppliers on the internet.  Does it have to be 16GB SSD?  Can it be a larger size SSD (e.g. 32/64/120/240/480 GB SSD card?  Does one even need to replace this failing SSD cache card if one is replacing the standard HDD with a say a 1TB SSD (i.e. 1 TB Samsung EVO 850).  A SSD of that size would suggest that the SSD cache is not longer needed?  If this is the case how does one disable  the SSD (Intel SRT/ Condusiv aka Diskkeeper) solution (i.e. cheap solution at the time to supplying real SSD hard drives since they were cost prohibitive).  Please instruct on how to disable by (removing drivers/ uninstalling software to make the HP envy recline AIO ignore this failing piece of hardware.    Also please instruct on how and where is this 16GB SSD cache located and how to get to it witout breaking the computer. Is it in the base?  What screws does one need to remove, and how to pr y open.  If not is it behind the screen?  How to remove the back cover, and any other components, metal plates, etcetera to get to and remove and replace it.  A video would be ideal or if you know if anyone who has already performed this a link to their material.  Also, just don't post it here  as the solution ... I added a Samsung EVO 250GB SSD. Cloned previous boot drive which was a 128GB SSD to it using Acronis True Image. Now, when I boot, it sits there for 30 seconds flashing the hard drive light then proceeds to boot normally. All BIOS settings are default. Lenovo IdeaCenter K450Intel 4th Gen i7, 16GB of ram Bootign from the 128GB SSD was fine, no obvious delays. Any idea what might be causing this?

I want to upgrade my Lenovo W530's second hard drive. I have already upgraded the 500 GB factory HDD that came with my computer and have put that in my optical bay. On the main bottom bay, I have put in a 500 GB Samsung 840 SSD. So in total, I now have 1 TB of capacity. However, my hard drives are almost full, and I was hoping that I would be able to upgrade my HDD from 500 GB to a 2TB capacity, if that's possible. I scourged the forums and I found this link on a related post: http://shop.lenovo.com/SEUILibrary/controller/e/web/LenovoPortal/en_US/catalog.workflow:item.detail?... Does this caddy support the 12.5 mm form factor? If so, I take it that a 12.5 mm hard drive would be my best bet. Is there the 2 TB option available?

Answer:What is max hard drive capacity for Lenovo W530 laptop

Seagate is making a 1TB Hybrid 3rd gen drive if that is what you're after. I would however invest in an external drive around 2TB with a eSATA port. I don't know if the W series has them still but they are fast. Same transfer speed as if there were in the system. That is the bueaty of eSATA. USB 3.0 is problematic and IMO unrealiable at this time.

I have been getting a notification of a storage device failure from the Hardware Scan in the Lenovo Solution Center.  It is for the 16GB M.2 SSD memory cache device and the failures are for the Random Seek Test, Funnel Seek Test, and SMART Short Self Test.  It has been a while since I first received the notification of failure, but I have been out of warranty the entire time.  Currently, I have not noticed any issues other than getting a bluescreen related to memory management 4 days ago.  Rebooting seems to have fixed that bluescreen issue as I haven't had any other issues. My questions are:  1) Is this failure of the memory cache ssd common?  2) If it is common, and will lead to more issues, can I replace it with a new memory card?  3) If I buy a replacement memory card, once I have it installed, do I just need to run the ExpressCache service again? Thanks ahead of time for any help y'all can provide!

I'm not 100% sure, but I suspect that my msata ssd 20gb cache drive is broken. Quick Backstory:  Was backing up some data about 1/2 week ago to an external HDD.  Unplugged the HDD and got a Blue Screen of Death (BSOD).  Rebooted computer, and it began behaving a little strangely. Symptoms:- If I open "Windows Explorer" it will hang or take a very long time to load the information about the HDDs on the "this PC" screen- If I open "My Downloads" or another folder, it will hang or take a very long time to load the information on the sidebar (i.e. info on the C and D drives"- If I navigate to "any folder with thumbnails to display" it will hang or take a very long time to load the thumbnails.- Right click and properties on anything will display around 30mins later- Only half the startup programs even load now- IAStorDataMgrSvc (Intel Rapid Storage process) bloats up to 1400+ MB in memory- Disk 1 utilize up to 100% at startup for greater than 10mins- Just things randomly working fast/slow (i.e. Windows 8 sidebar, try to open a picture file results in system call error)  Anyhow, I suspect there is something wrong with the HDDs (probably MSATA SSD) or disk controllers or something. And well, the MSata SSD on this computer broke 1.5 years ago.  If the replacement broke this time, it will be 2 times in 3 years.  So, I'd imagine the generic OEM Msata SSD is just not very reliable or quite simply, good at all.  And some of the... Answer:msata ssd as disk cache in w530

you need to partition it using the disk manager. Hit the windows button, and type "create and format" in the search bar, then run it.You should then see an unformatted unpartitioned disk. Make sure you only do a quick format, not a full format which will start wearing the thing out.  Presumably you will want to give the drive a letter e.g. "E" at this point.    Make sure you dont format the wrong drive! I have not used it as a cache - I boot of my msata.

So I was doing a clean install of Windows on my Lenovo x250. It has a 16gb SSD M.2 "Cache" drive and a standard 500gb main drive.

Unfortunately I selected the M2 drive as the installation path and formatted the other drive. So I have Windows on the smaller SSD which is now the "C" drive.

What I'd like to do is make the larger drive the C drive, install windows on that drive, and then use the smaller SSD as the cache drive like before.

I have tried diskpart and the Admin tools in the Control panel to attempt to change the drive letter on the C: drive, but it keeps giving me an error ("The Parameter is incorrect"), regardless of what drive letter I try.

I'm wondering if I simply can't change the C: drive this way, and what other options I have?

Answer:Lenovo X250 - Messed up windows installation onto M2 Cache Drive

Okay, so have tried multiple things to no avail. Looks like the issue is that there are two drives on the system and the Windows installer just doesn't like this. Resolution is typically to remove all other drives other than the one you want to install on. However, in this case the SSD M2 drive removal would require me literally taking apart the system, and for some unknown reason there is no ability to disable the drive in the BIOS (thanks for that Lenovo!).

Any other options anyone can think of?

Hello. I have had this Lenovo W530, from work, since June 2015. I finally started using its internal Mat**bleep**a DVD-RAM UJ8C0 (SB01) disc drive to burn to small old CDs (unused CD-Rs & CD-RWs) recently. However, IT's preinstalled 64-bit Windows 7 EE SP1's system image creator and downloaded ImgBurn v2.5.8.0 (with a downloaded 247 MB ISO file) could not fully write to my CDs. I had no problems erasing my old CD-RW. I tried copying a very old burned 650 MB CD-R to its local SSD, and it was fine. So, it sounds like this physical drive has write issues? Or is it something else? Thank you in advance.

Hello,

Do you have a different brand of CD-R discs you can try?  Also, an you burn DVD discs, or do those fail as well?

The W530 was introduced in 2012, so while you may have only been using it for half a year, it's a four year old model at this point.

My question is should I set up the computer first, get it running and then the install the extra memory?  Or install the extra memory before setting it up for the first time???
Thanks in advance!!!

It should be just fine to install the RAM after the fact. The BIOS should detect the change and configure it accordingly. Windows may just display a message about RAM and the Windows Experience Index.

Answer:Lenovo B40-30 - Adding a DVD Drive or HHD Caddy

hi calum

Welcome to the Forums.

Looking inside the unit via this B40-30 Video Disassembly Guide, this system uses an ODD connector board that attaches to the motherboard and into the ODD.

- Link to picture

If you'll be going for an HDD caddy, I would recommend you get the B40-30 with an ODD so that you won't have any issues  attaching a caddy as there's no guarantee that this connector is present with a B40-30 with a dummy ODD..

Hope this helps.

Question: W530 adding memory

Hello, I just ordered a W530 with 8Gb of ram. It seems like the W530 has 4 DIMM ports. I read somewhere on the web that some Lenovo come with dummy memory cards that one cannot replace by real memory modules !?! I would like to buy 4 X 8 Gb memory modules and install them as soon as I receive the laptop. Do you think there is a risk that the W530 comes with dummy memory cards ? Are those machines limited by their initial memory configuration ? I would also like to replace the hard drive with a 500 Gb SSD, is it possible, and do you recommand a particular model ? thanks very much for your help !

Answer:W530 adding memory

welcome to the community.

i believe the "dummy" DIMMs come in the models *not* equipped with a quad-core CPU. as i understand it, only the quad-core models support 32gb of RAM, otherwise you're limited to 16gb. if i've mis-stated this, i'm sure someone will step in to correct me.

regards.

edit: didn't catch your 2nd question, first time around.
you should be able to use any capacity SSD that will physically fit into the drive bay.

I've bought a couple of weeks ago the W530 2438CTO, Full-HD, K2000M, Core I5-3320M, 8GB RAM without Color Sensor and no Fingerprint Reader. And I wonder why it was and still is impossible to order the W530 Core I5-3320M with Color Sensor, though the Palmrest has the hole for the sensor. That's really interesting, because the screen shows a much too high red level, which burns the eyes. And so far I understand, it's a common problem with that screen, according to the statements in the forum. Now my question, does anyone know if it's possible to order and add the Color Sensor on my own - I'm a technician and know how to maintain Laptops. And if it's possible, does the Color Sensor calibrate the way to high red level of the screen to a normal color level?I found a list of FRU: http://download.lenovo.com/parts/ThinkPad/W530_FRU_BOM_v2.pdf  Thanks to everyone for ya help :-)

I have a Dell Inspiron E150 64GB capacity. This computer is used daily mostly for internet use. This computer runs PC Tools Performance Toolkit where it dumps all temporary Internet files/cookies in addition to their Spyware Doctor with Antivirus.

After receiving a message that the hard drive was almost full, I transferred all photos and graphic program files to a thumb drive and that seemed to alleviate the problem. A few days later I received the message again, went through unused programs and removed. That too seemed to alleviate the problem for the time being as well. Not long after that I received the message again and removed more unused programs, which that too helped the problem at the time. It again filled up and I received the message again. Having exhausted all unused programs and transferring most of the documents to the thumb drive, I uninstalled iTunes and it's entire library and that took the drive from 100% capacity down to 40%. Since that time an HP printer was re-installed to alleviate some errors from when I uninstalled some of the programs components and also an update from PC tools Spyware Doctor with Antivirus, and the hard drive is again filled to capacity. I've exhausted any unused files/programs and at a stand still with what to do next. Any advice is welcome. Thanks!!!

Answer:Would formatting hard drive remove Windows 8 ,so I can reinstall 7

If you just delete the partitions on the drive, then boot the install DVD, the install program should offer to create a partition from the free space and format it, then install W7. As long as it's a licensed commercial copy of Windows you should be fine.

I just installed a new hard drive on my Lenovo Laptop 300 N100 (0768-6eu) and would like to reintall all of the drivers for all of the hardware in the machine. There does not seem to be any answer in the frequently asked questionsI have a lot of drivers installed but I need to burn some DVD's and can not find the Roxio driver for the DVD.There is an upgrade for the Roxio driver but without the original program, it will not upgrade.I also need drivers to allow it to hibernate and recognize a monitor.Under the heading of downloads there is a section for preloaded software which leads to a help program that tells me that I have a later version installed. But not help with preloaded softwareThank you anyone who can give me helpMessage Edited by Art-in-Jackson on 01-15-2008 10:21 PM

I have a W530 with a Quadro K2000M that I dock in the 170w Series 3 Dock. I believe I am having an Optimus related issue, here is the monitor setup I am trying to run...Internal Display + DP Monitor (Dock) + DP Monitor (Dock) + DP Monitor (Mini-DP From Laptop) + VGA Monitor (Dock) This works in WIndows with Optimus Enalbed in the BIOS just fine. When I try to put the system to Sleep I recieve a BSOD. I'll provide a link shortly but it is calling out an NVIDIA Driver.  I've tried quite a few different drivers and setups. Anyone have any thoughts on getting this system to sleep correctly with my preferred setup?

Hello, Thankyou for taking the time to read my posting.  I am experiencing a very frustrating problem.  I recently did a clean installation of Windows Vista Ultimate on my X61 tablet.  While generally please with the clean install, I have found that my external esata hard drive (Seagate ST300000XS) is no longer recognized when plugged in through a Vantec ESata Card Bus controller. Here are the facts as I know them.1. The Vantec ESata card (SATA II-150 2 Port Cardbus) seems to work fine.  When it is plugged in Windows loads the Silicon Image ATA controller that is used by this particular card (SiI 3512).  The Silicon Image ATA controller is added to the control panel controls. 2. When the esata cable to the hard drive is plugged into the card the lights do not turn on (indicating activity), the drive is not found in My Computer or in Disk Management.  When the tablet is rebooted the esata drive is not available in BIOS.  This drive and card worked prior to the reinstall of the OS and so I suspect that something went wrong at this point, is there a driver i failed to load that would enable my X61 to recognize external drives, could it be a firmware problem?  Any help would be appreciated it.  I should note that some of my diagnositic options are limited.  I am currently in a remote town in India without my OS or Lenovo recovery disks.  The external drive does not have a USB port, and I do not have any ac... Hello, The hard drive on my ideapad Y430  is shot.  Connecting another computer to the drive with a sata cable confirms this. I purchased a new WD 320gb 7200 rpm drive to replace it and installed it. This computer did not come with a Vista CD or any CD for that matter. I downloaded the Lenovo System Repair files from the Lenovo website. I burned this to a disc and tried to boot up from it unsuccessfully. How do I reinstall Vista and the correct Lenovo drivers on this machine? Thanks very much for your help!

Answer:New Hard Drive Problems- How to Reinstall Vista / Lenovo Drivers

if your old hdd is still working, you can use disk copy to clone disks.about discs, lenovo doesn't provide them. you can burn recovery discs with using one key recover.if you need to perform clean windows installation, you can use your serial number if you have vista installation dvd.

I have a DVD with Windows 8 that I know works and have used on multiple occations before. I also have a USB drive with Windows 8 that I knows work as well and I have used many times before. I want to reinstall Windows 8 on my Lenovo L420 but I can't start the reinstallation from either device. If I boot from the USB drive I get the Windows splash screen, blue on black background, the it freezes. If I boot from the DVD it says to Press any key to boot from DVD and it works. But then I end up getting the same Windows splash screen, blue on black background and it freezes.  BIOS is set to allow USB boot, but even if that was the issue it should still launch the reinstallation from the DVD. I have checked all BIOS options to see if anything is wrong and I have reset BIOS defaults to no luck. Why am I unable to reinstall Windows on my Lenovo L420?  On a side note, my neighbour who also have a Lenovo L420 as a work laptop has the very exact same problem, so it can't be specific to my laptop but to the L420 model alltogether. Strange issue, never seen anything like it. Thanks!

I own a Lenovo U41-70 and have upgraded my RAM to 8GB already by replacing the 4GB which came along with the box during purchase. Now, I am not satisfied with the performance of my notebook with the available 8GB of RAM and it hangs very often and I have to reboot periodically which is painful. I run dual boot with Windows and Ubuntu. As far as I have gone through about the processor of my notebook, which is Intel core i7 5500U it's clear that this chip supports a max of 16gigs of RAM. But, Lenovo U41-70 service manual says that its max expandable upto 8GB only. I dont understand the point here and why it can't be upgraded to 16GB of RAM? Do I need to do a BIOS upgrade to support 16GB of RAM?

The specs say a maximum of 8 but there are websites selling two sticks of 8GB saying it can handle up to 16GB. Also I'm curious if the video card on the Radeon model is one of those MXM video cards that you can remove and upgrade in the future? Thank you all.

I've just got my Lenovo E540 which has a 1tb hdd and also a 16gb ssd. The SSD according to 'Speccy' is a SanDisk SSD U110 16GB. However I can not see this in Windows Explorer. How do I know that this is actually working correctly? Is there software I need to install?Any help is appreciated thankyou.

Answer:Lenovo E540 with SanDisk SSD U110 16GB

If I am not mistaken, the 16GB SSD is for caching only to speed things up, which is out of user control. Caching SSD is different from SSD disk. Caching SSD is usually smaller in size compared to SSD disk. Not sure, but I think 32GB and lower are usually for chaching while 64GB and above is for actuall SSD disk.

Background: I bought my refurbished Lenovo Y500 laptop in June. It came with a 1TB HDD and a 16GB SSD for caching.

Current problem: The other day I noticed that my laptop had become unresponsive. The laptop has a pre-existing problem where it cannot be put to sleep or it will usually crash, so I just leave it on unless I know I won't be using it for a while. I had been out of the room for a few hours, and when I returned I turned the screen on and the laptop was mostly frozen. I was able to move the mouse, but everything else on the screen was frozen. According to the time displayed on the screen, it had been frozen for 3 hours. I forced a shutdown and restarted it. It took much longer to startup than usual, but otherwise seemed to be working. After a few minutes of web browsing though, my browser became unresponsive for about a minute or so. When the cursor stopped spinning, a message popped up from the Intel Rapid Storage tray icon saying that the SSD had been removed. After this, the laptop was working pretty much like normal again but a little less responsive.

When trying to restart it, the laptop screen turned off but all the power lights remained on and the fan kept running. I waited a while but the fan seemed to start running faster and the air blowing out seemed very hot so I forced it to shut down again. Restarting it again led to the exact same scenario: becomes unresponsive after some use, SSD disappears, and won't shutdown or restart properly.

The OK status is just based on SMART data. If the values stay within defined tresholds it will say everything's fine even if the drive was on fire. You're not the first with this problem. From what I see all those 16GB SSD used for cache die after 3-6 months of use. If it's under warranty have it replaced...

When I "restart" my Y500 using windows 8.0, it takes a minimum of 15 minutes.  Sometimes, if I have time to wait, it takes more than one hour.   90% of the time, I restart it using the on/off button.  No problems at all using the button, but the software takes a VERY long time or won't restart at all--just the green screen with the word "restart."

Hello everyone, I have a X201s notebook - which is a very decent one with i7, 8GB and 256GB Samsung PM800 SSD. I have been running on 8GB since day one in 2010 when I got it. Now I need more RAM and tried to upgrade to 16Gb but the 8GB sticks I bought froM GEIL or G.Skill just does not do. I have read that Corsair produce similar results. The BIOS does recognise the RAM and show it as 16GB, however Windows 7 stops booting where the graphical part should appear (the flying balls), so does Windows 8 when I try to install it. No MS OS can be installed either.Windows Memory Check runs but VERY slow. I would say it would take a month for it to complete. Tried both BIOS 1.36 and 1.38. Question to Lenovo - any plans to support 16Gb for X201?  So far I seen people tested GEIL, G.Skill, OWC, Corsair - neither of them had any luck. Thanks. Question to all - anyone got it running with 16GB?

Hello, I'm hoping I can find a solution to my problem here as I couldn't find one elsewhere on the net.
I have a laptop and currently have a 120GB hard drive in an external enclosure. I have just bought a new 250GB hard drive and have installed it in the external enclosure. Though partitioning and formating the 120GB was a breeze, I've had nothing but problems with the new 250GB.
Below are the specs of what I'm working with. In both Partion Magic and in the Win2000 Disk Management, it correctly displays the 250GB drive (233GB). Regardless of which program I use (ie. Partion Magic, Win Disk Management, command line FORMAT) I get problems.
Generally, what will happen is it will partition fine. Then it will begin to the formatting process (VERY slowly) and then either throw an error either during or at the end of the process. And this is when I try to format a very small partition (ie. 100MB). I have successfully formated a 10MB partition. On a large partition (ie. 30GB) the format process will start but will not progress.
The only two things I can think of is that the drive is faulty, or because I am booting my OS from a floppy there is some sort of recognition problem.
I can't run the diagnosis software from Maxtor because that requires the drive to be installed internally.
So any help to this problem will be greatly appreciated.
Additionally, how long should it generally take to format the 250GB drive in its entirety?

Comp: Toshiba Satellite 2805-S201
OS: Win2... Read more

Answer:What's with the 250GB Drive

HHhhhhhmmm...sounds like a bad drive to me. Do you have a desktop computer that you can use to attempt to format the drive??

Hey Lenovo Enthusiasts! I am about to purchase the Lenovo Thinkpad 550s, and I am tempted to purchase the baseline memory (4GB) and storage (512GB) HDD.  I want to make sure that I can indeed upgrade the memory to 16GB of RAM and the storage to a 256 (or 512) GB SSD. In my research earlier on, I noticed that somebody had posted a link to the parts list:https://download.lenovo.com/parts/ThinkPad/w550s_frubom_20150130.pdf I don't know what half of this technical jargon is, but from what I gather, I have found an SSD made by Samsung on Amazon, and an 8GB memory made by Data Memory Systems that seem to abide. SSD:http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-256GB-2-5-Inch-Internal-MZ-7KE256BW/dp/B00LMXBOP4 Memory:http://www.datamemorysystems.com/parts/lenovo/03X6657/ Questions:1) Could somebody wiser than me please verify that these products will work for the w550s? I was going to purchase them from Crucial, as they say that is is "100% compatible" but I am not sure still.Crucial: http://www.crucial.com/usa/en/compatible-upgrade-for/Lenovo/thinkpad-w550s 2) In regards to the warranty, does anyone know if I were to mess up the data preloaded on the HDD that is put in the laptop, by trying to transfer it to the SSD, would the warranty cover fixing this? Kind regards,Spencer

Answer:Lenovo Thinkpad W550s Memory upgrade to 16GB and S...

Very disappointing. Yes, I have the same problem (son, since it is your problem!). I note that over 189 people have at least looked at this question you asked before we decided to have you purchase the W550S...and after calling tech support one last time after my son purchased the machine (and was told there should be no issue)-we see BSOD multiple times within an hour.  They happen so quickly that it is hard to even note what the error message is.... I replaced his 512 HD with Samsung SSD 512GB drive. I used a disk duplicator-everything seemed to go great. Then I put in 16GB of RAM-again, everything seemed great. However, the notebook is only now being used frequently as my son is starting school now-and as said above, the BSOD is making me think this has something to do with the SSD or RAM replacement. Yes, obviously, it's fairly easy to replace with the original parts and see if the problem goes away-but he wanted the SSD and more RAM, so even if that fixes the issue-we will likely get rid of the notebook. BUT:  here is what disappoints me:  absolutely no comment on my son's original questions. I'm guessing I won't get input from Lenovo either....will try to call tomorrow, but we are almost beyond the point where we need to return the SSD/RAM and notebook if we want our money back. A little guidance from Lenovo would be appreicated before we need to make a decision.. Thanks,Steve

As the title suggests: Is a RAM upgrade possible for this partiular model? Lenovo Yoga 720-13IKBR 81C3007WMHOne (Dutch) site I regularly visit suggests it is, but there's no sources to back it up and for me the 16GB upgrade option is crucial. And why is it impossible to find any information on this laptop model? All info I find points to the 720-13IKB (without the "R"). My query concerns the "Kaby Lake refresh model with Core i5-8250U processor.

I recently purchased 2 8gb memory sticks for my Lenovo p400 Ideapad Touch.  The specs are below: DDR3L 1600 (PC3L 12800)Cas Latency 9Timing 9-9-9-281.35VDual Channel KitGSKILL Ripjaw Series Model F3-1600C9D-16GRSL204-Pin DDR3 SO-DIMMECC NoUnbufferedDual ChannelWhen I install the RAM, the computer only reads 8gb.  Even when I go into the msconfig file, it shows 8 gb and all 8gb is available for use.  I have also removed the RAM sticks and switched spots to make sure one of the sticks was not defective.  I had also downloaded the most recent system update software to check any driver/bios updates.  None were found.  I'm confused to why it's only seeing 8 gb?  Is there a setting in the bios I need to change for the timing?  Is there a setting in the BIOS I missed?  Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Answer:Lenovo p400 16gb memory upgrade issue

Hi nawnek ,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

Would  8 GB also show in the BIOS?

Product Overview - IdeaPad P400 Touch :
RAM :  DDR3-1600/1333MHz SODIMM × 2 (max 16 GB)

Try using one ram per slot at a time to help isolate if one of the memory slot is having an issue.
Using the original ram , try to add the new one , swapping each new ram to the same slot.

Recommended OEM ram here on item 12 page 95.

Update us how it goes.

Regards
