Thinkpad W510 Display randomly dies and then machine shuts down

Question: Thinkpad W510 Display randomly dies and then machine shuts down

the last two days my machine has suffered a crash with similar symptoms. First, the display goes blank. I can see some disk activity. This continues for maybe 20-30 seconds and then the machine shuts down. Yesterday, I had to restart the machine twice b/c the first attempt also resulted in a shutdown during the boot process.I thought that perhaps it was an overheating issue, but I'm not convinced of that as today there was nothing obstructing the exhaust vents (though they were a bit dusty).I'm runing windows 7 pro, 64 bit. Have an NVidia card, but I don't know about the details. Where would I find them? Thanks in advance.

Preferred Solution: Thinkpad W510 Display randomly dies and then machine shuts down

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Thinkpad W510 Display randomly dies and then machine shuts down

If it is a W510, graphics are probably 1GB NVIDIA® Quadro® FX880M. It is hard to diagnose from a thousand miles away, but my first guess is overheating. I suggest installing TPFancontrol (free) and monitor temperatures.

it seems to happen most often when playing video or playing facebook games of any type. there is no warning the computer is just OFF. it has done this in safe mode as well and i wasn't even watching video or playing any games then. the only time it has done this before it was over heated. now sometimes it is hot and others it is not so it really seems random. no viruses, no malware, regular maintenance is kept up. if i can find a solution other than formatting the machine that would be great, or at least knowing if formatting would do me any good at all. i have downloaded hijack this and the TSGInfo follows:

I've had  a X41 Tablet for about 2.5 years now.  Just recently in the past month it will randomly die on me, meaning it will lose all power (No shutdown screen, nothing).  If I try to turn it back on, nothing will happen.  If I plug in the AC adapter, still no power.  The only way I can get it to start back up is if I remove the battery, then place it back in forcefully or wiggle the battery around while it is back in the slot.  If it does restart, the battery is still charged like nothing had happened.  So  it isn't the battery losing it's charge.  I even tried putting another battery in from one of the X41 tablets in our office after the computer had died and it wouldn't start.  My thoughts are it has something to with the connection on the board.  Any other thoughts or ways to fix this? Thanks,JohnMessage Edited by cranjx on 06-11-2008 10:34 AM

I would suggested having it inspected by lenovo themselves. Do you have a 3-year warranty?

My machine has become extremely slow to load and run applications, especially Internet Explorer. Also, after a certain amount of time (usually 20 minutes or so) the machine will automatically SHUT DOWN in the middle of whatever I am doing. I am afraid I have picked up some sort of malware that is causing these problems.

I am running WIndows XP, SP 2. I also run spybot S&D, and adaware from lavasoft. I can not get through an entire scan of either becuase whatever this problem is causes my machine to shut down before any scans complete.

I was finally able to get it to run long enough to do a HJT scan and log, which I will post below. Please let me know if you need any more info. Thanks!

Hello everyone, I have a Thinkpad W510 laptop connected to two monitors using a 4338 dock with DVI connections from the dock to the monitors. I have this same configuration at my home office and work office locations. At both locations, there is no output from the second display, even though the second monitor is being detected by the OS (Win7 Enterprise SP1, 64-bit). Under Device Manager, I have uninstalled both monitors and the NVIDIA Quadro FX 880M display card and reinstalled them which did not resolve the issue. This configuration was working without issue for over a year. This is a laptop provided by my company so I not sure if one of their software updates caused this issue. Any assistance the community can provide in troubleshooting this issue would be appreciated. Thanks!

Hello!I am trying to help a local non profit school with their Edge 15 laptops. I have 5 of them that are randomly shutting down completely, as if the power was completely removed. Doesn't seem to have an exact time limit.  Fans are running non stop. Here is what I have tried so far:different versions of windows 7, Linux boot disk, different battery power cords and combination of those two. Switched ahci to compatibility mode, lenovo power monitor, battery driver, power patch for v++ issues. Upgraded bios and also reverted back to factory settings on the bios. Cpu does not seem to be overheating. New thermal paste just in case.  Customer support is saying because they are a month out of warranty they wont talk to me so they refereed me to here.  Any ideas?

Hello!I have 2 thinkpads that are randomly shutting down completely, as if the power was completely removed. Doesn't seem to have an exact time limit, but it is generally after 30 minutes. battery has between 95 and 100% and the fan is running non stop. The air coming from the fan is not warm. The bottom of the laptop is not warm. The laptop is plugged into a wall outlet. Here is what I have tried so far:1. Verified power settings are correct.2. Verified power settings in bios are disabled3. removed the IBM power monitoring software.4. removed any unnecessary software.5. Verified that the fan is not dirty.6. Changed system cooling state to passive for "Plugged in".7. Removed CPU fan, cleaned old thermal grease off of all surfaces and re-applied a new layer of thermal grease.  warranty is expired as of June 2013 Looking around on Google, I see that this happens a LOT, but nobody ever writes what they did to resolve the issue. Any ideas?

Answer:Thinkpad Edge 15 shuts down randomly

I am typing this message on a Lenovo Edge 15 with the exact same issue, and I have discovered an improvised "solution". If you put the computer in "sleep mode before 30 minutes elapses (i.e. 28:30) then the timer resets. I currently have some freeware downloaded called Cool Timer to warn me to put the computer the sleep each time and my Dad is writing a program now that will make the computer automatically sleep and wake it self every 28 minutes. I know this is not a perfect solution, but it is by far the best answer I have came up with after reading every forum available online. It makes the computer functional, which is a big plus.

Hi all, I have looked at the forum and seen that my problem is "quite common" on older versions of ThinkPad.Here we are with a ThinkPad W541, with core i7 vPro (quad core), 16G DDR3... one of the best of the moment. Running under Windows 7 Pro (waiting for Windows 10). The problem is about random shut down of the computer, either plugged or on the battery. The screen freezes, and a few seconds after the computer is off. After that, I can turn it on pushing the power button and it asks me if I want to start Windows the normal way, or in safe mode... No error, no blue screen, nothing that tells me that there is a problem. The problem was present the first days of use, 2 months ago, but only about once a week. The time I go to eat, or something else, and when I come back the computer is off. I first though about "normal" Windows problems", but it seems not.Everything is up to date.Lenovo care center tests do not see any errors. Now, the problem is happening several times a day, especially when I move the computer from one room to another... or more strange, when I touch the screen to move it a bit !! But it still happens randomly, when I am not aside the machine. I recently added 16G RAM (2x8G Crucial ballistix DDR3 12800 1.35v) to get the maximum of 32G accepted. This RAM is guaranteed compatible. The problem should not come from the new RAM, because it was present before I added it.But it may have increased the frequence ?? I did not see real solutions for... Hello, I am having some troubles with my Thinkpad Edge 15 (0302-47G), which is about 15 months old. Around 8 months ago Lenovo had to replace its hard disk. Everything was fine, until a couple of days ago the thinkpad started to randomly freeze and shutting down without warning and without  "any reason".There is no pattern when it switches itself off, sometimes it is ok for a couple of hours, sometimes it switches off during booting or 5 minutes afterwards. System restore, virus scan, and hard disk diagnostic didn't solve anything. Also I don't think it is because of overheating as the laptop is quite cold and the fan runs as before. Since the first shut down, I also get the following error message from time to time when starting up: WARNING 2200: Machine Type and Serial Number are invalid.2201: Machine UUID is invalid Did anybody experience the same problem? I would really appreciate any suggestions which might help solving the problem. Thank you very much! Fabian

I have a 4 year old Lenovo Thinkpad X230 computer.  Since I upgraded to Windows 10 (two years ago?) my computer has randomly shut off with no warning.  There doesn't seem to be a pattern with regard to when or how this happens.  The computer starts normally every time.  This can happen upwards of 5 or 6 times in an hour (although sometimes it can go several days without shutting off). In the last year (since June 2016), the computer has been evaluated by three different technicians on three different occasions (June, October, January).  Each found no hardware issues, no issues with fuzz/dust, no obvious software issues, no malware or other viruses.  Personally, I have explored the answer on the internet and fiddled with the settings relating to sleep mode (among other suggestions) and nothing seems to have worked.  I recently was advised to revert to the original windows 10, undoing all the updates and additional installations that I've put on the computer.  I did this, and miraculously it helped (although it still shut off twice since then.  This was in February).  In the last two weeks, I was forced to upgrade back to normal and the problem has returned.  Additionally, the first person who looked at my computer (back in June 2016), told me that this was aparently a common problem with Windows 10 and that the only way to fix it was to revert to Windows 8.   I would like to not have to do this, if poss... Hi All,I am looking at purchasing a W510. I have a Dell wfp2007 30" monitor that I would like to drive off of the W510, at the full 2560x1600 resolution. The wfp2007 only has a Dual-Link Dvi - and the W510 comes with a DisplayPort. It would seem I need a DisplayPort to Dual Dvi cable to make this work.My questions to you:(1) Anyone have any experience getting 2560x1600 resolution with a w510 and a wfp2007?(2) Would I need to get the dock (even though the laptop itself has a DisplayPort - because of the extra power supply?)(3) Any other reccommendations for driving the wfp2007 with the w510 at 2560x1600?Thank you very much for your help!!Meera

Answer:Thinkpad W510 - trying to get 2560x1600 resolution on Dell wfp2007 using a W510

Go here: and search for threads by RonS He posted some stuff about W510 and resolution limitations.  As I recall, the W510 has a DVI-I and won't support your resolution. In regards to DisplayPort to DVI-D port on your monitor, one approach would be to by a powered DP to DVI converter.  Passive converts max out at a lower resolution, so make sure you get an active/powered box if you go this route.

I reset my pc - windows 10 to fix a different issue and on reboot, i see lenovo splash screen, but windows is only visible on external monitor.  I found a batch file fix, but that appears to be related to OLED screens - i don't think i have one.  My problem to start with was minor - every time i unpin Edge and Store, they return... tried registry and appdata location deletes - no success. I know it is a profile issue, tried deleting profile, but work has us login to Azure AD, and that screwed that up - had to reset to start  the process over. Ever since - the laptop screen only shows the lenovo boot splash.

Hello everyone!
I am not sure if this is the correct forum for this post, but my issue does deal largely with my display. If so I apologize in advance and ask to be directed to the correct forum.

I have searched the boards for similar issues and I have tried their approaches but it has not resolved my issue.

I am experiencing issues with my ASUS graphics card and my Intel HD display driver. Whenever I am playing a videogame or doing something that is graphics intensive, my display freezes and I either have to reboot my machine or sometimes the display unfreezes and I am allowed to resume my activities.

I originally had graphics driver 295.73, but I upgraded to version 296.10 when it came out.

I still had the same issue when I upgraded my driver so I rolled back to version 295.73. I kept bouncing back and forth between the two drivers and I even tried going into safe mode to install the drivers.

Twice while I was using AutoCAD and playing a videogame, the display became distorted and showed pixelated colors.
I installed the 301.24 driver when it came out on May 22nd, but the problem occurred again while I was playing a game and while I was in AutoCAD.

In the rare instances that my display froze and unfroze, I received a windows notification from the windows event log stating that my driver 295.73, 296.10, or 301.24 failed.

I have performed numerous diagnostics and stress tests using Ultimate Boot CD.

My memory tests have checked out fine and so hav... Read more

So I got myself the Lenovo ThinkPad W510 the other day, specific model being "431929G", along with it I got myself a 9-cell battery instead of the included 6-cell as well as this additional "slice battery" solutions which you attach at the bottom of the computer using the docking port it seems? The box which this slice battery came in was marked model 57Y4545, the piece of battery inside however says FRU: 42T4739? I guess and hope it's the same thing?  It does attach to the bottom of my W510 without any issues whatsoever, I lock it in place so I get that green indicator which should mean it's supposed to function? But it doesn't.. ThinkVantage Power Manager do pick up the battery but it's just standing there at 12% battery with no activity? Even after the main 9-cell is fully charged it wont start to charge the slice battery? I did even remove the main 9-cell in order to see whether or not that would change anything, but it didn't? And if I remove the power cord when running only the slice battery the W510 will just drop dead? So it's not charging, neither is it providing my W510 with any more battery life? It just sits the with 12% battery with no activity whatsoever, no charging or usage at all?

Are you sure you're running the latest power manager? I.e., have you updated all the system drivers, os drivers, bios, etc.?

Maybe this is a hardware issue?

Answer:Win XP randomly Dies

You can test the PSU with a multimeter. Do a search on the web and you will find info on how to do this. Also, make sure the memory you put in is good. Download memtest. You'll need to put it on a bootable floppy. Then boot from the floppy and run it. It will run continously. Leave that running overnight. If it is the memory it will tell you. And if it is a problem with Winxp you'll know it because the system won't have locked up. If it does lock up the problem isn't Winxp. But rather a hardware issue.

This MAY not be a Win7 problem at all, but I'm able to boot off CD into XP and Linux OK...

I've been asked to sort out a machine which has Win7 Premium 64bit. A problem started about 10 days ago whereby when starting in the morning it would get to the swirling "Starting Windows" stage and then turn off. Restart the machine and the same thing happens only it seems to get a little further... and once again and a little bit further and this is repeated maybe 8 times until it eventually starts but says the system needs to be repaired.

The repair seems to work OK and the system is back to life.

That's what I was told and it didn't seem all that credible but I tried it and got the system up and running. I kept it disconnected from the internet except from a brief moment when I downloaded updates to some anti-malware programs (MBAM & SuperAntiSpyware) and I turned off M$ Auto-Updates (at least set to notify if available). I scanned with the antimalware products and removed a couple of things. I disabled anything in startup that I didn't feel was essential and the system was working without problems.

I turned the machine off and left it off for half an hour or so and it restarted with no problems.

This morning it was exactly like the original problem... seems to be starting and then turns off!

So far I've run a quick and advanced manufacturer's disk test with no problems. I'll be running MemTest to check out the RAM but agai... Read more

My Yoga 11s shuts down without any warning when it's plugged in. It may operate for a few or several minutes but will always eventually shut off--completely, almost violently and requires a reboot. This issue only occurs when plugged in. No problems with sudden shut down when running on battery power. The battery fully charges without issue when closed and not in use. I have been just making sure I keep it charged and use it unplugged. However use often extends beyond the battery life. The random and persistent shut off has become extremely frustrating.  What is the problem? Any solutions or ideas?

I've had my class note taking inturrupted by automatic shutdown, and just now lost a Facebook post I had been working on for about four hours (it's a weekend update and I'm verbose, so sue me.)I've also noticed that at times, only one battery is listed with the capacities combined. It's a bit unnerving that the power interface can't report the state of the battery consistently, though I do apreciate it when this allows the keyboard to die gracefully and work to continue uninturrupted on tablet power. Any help is appreciated.

Answer:Helix shuts down when keyboard battery dies

This is a standard problem with the Helix and has been written up extensively in this forum so check on all posts on the Helix keyboard. There is a keyboard fix download  which reduced the occurrences on my Helix a great deal, but did not eliminate it completely.  I keep my settings set to "Battery Stretch Mode" and "Battery Health Mode." If I know I will be off AC for a long time I always make sure I switch to fully charge both batteries. I don't check as often as I did, but when I would find the battery drain down below 20% I make sure it is charging. If it is not, I may have to reset the keyboard (note the rest button) and then it returns to normal charging.  If the keyboard goes totally dead a reset restores it to charging mode. But as I said, that rarely happens now. I sent my Helix back twice for repair only to find it is (in my mind) a software rather than hardware glitch that Lenovo has not totally solved. But I am satisfied now for two months the problem is pretty much under control.

Hello there... I own a great HP 4530s with a 64-bit Windows 8.1 Pro installed and today, this morning, after I pressed the power button to resume my session from sleep, the hard drive started spinning, the screen came on with the Windows' lock screen (everything normal) and after about three seconds it 'died'... it just shut down in an unclean way, as if I removed the battery... sudden power off (and it's also plugged in, so power fueling is constant). I turn it on again and it works as usual... just that I lost my seesion and all the programs that were opened are closed now - a new session from a fresh start. I use this computer every day and this happened several times before (about four times)... it's not an often occurence but still... raises concerns and question marks as to whether my laptop is healthy or it's kinda losing its health. Here's the Windows' event account for it:  Event-41, Kernel Power The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. This error could be caused if the system stopped responding, crashed, or lost power unexpectedly.  And there's also an event that states this: 'The previous system shutdown at 03:29:42 on ?21/?02/?2017 was unexpected.'... which is weird, because that is the time when I put it to sleep (3:29)... and this event is logged at 9:03. I turned it on at 9:03 and that's what happened.  So my question is... is it something to be concerned about or it's just that the power su... Read more

I just received my new X1 Carbon yesterday. When I booted it up the first time the computer died after I set up username and password in Windows. Next time the same screen appeared but the username was ofcourse taken already. I logged into windows and the computer died. After 10-20 HDD checks the computer logs into windows and I can install some software (Visual Studio etc), but then it just dies again. Sometimes it can't even login to windows before it dies.  I've tried to format and reinstall windows but it doesn't help, sometimes I can use it for one hour, and sometimes just for 10 seconds.  I can't really say that I can see a pattern in this whether I'm using the AC chord or not.. I've also done a memory check and a harddrive check without any errors. I guess I have to return it and wait for a new one.. really disappointing =(  Any ideas Lenovo?

Answer:X1 Carbon randomly dies

>>  Sometimes it can't even login to windows before it dies.  When this happened to me on my PC a couple years ago, the problem was my one of my fans had died (either the power supply's fan or a system fan; can't remember which.) .  The system was shutting itself off as a defensive reaction to overheating.

I have a user with a dell latitude d620 laptop. Her external usb mouse stops working every few hours-- apparently when she's doing nothing out of the ordinary, the "installing new hardware" dialog comes up randomly, and when she cancels out of it, the mouse will stop working at a slightly later time. Even the red LED light on the bottom of the mouse goes out.

We've tried different models USB mice, attaching it directly to a USB port on the laptop, via the USB port on the laptop dock, and even with a USB->PS/2 adapter via the dock's PS/2 port.... all with the same results. Every time, when the mouse is working fine, it'll pop up the 'installing new hardware' dialog, and afterwards it just suddenly stops working.

Any ideas? I have no idea what's going on.

She's running windows xp sp3 with symantec endpoint, all the usual office software, really nothing out of the ordinary.

Hello. I am in need of advice once again. I'm staying at my uncles house who uses Keyon internet service so its like broadband with some sort of dish? Anyways...

The speeds were pretty random and slow. Spikes of 3000 pings and averages of 600. Updated the firmware (7 years old) and average is under a hundred now. However the internet still just completely dies for random amounts of time... 2 seconds to a few minutes. Pings timeout to google or yahoo but not my router.

As far as the setup goes, there is a dish or antennae they have aimed a little dish on the roof towards a few miles away. The "modem" is in a plastic box attached to it. The cable runs into literally the cheapest "splitter adapter" ive ever seen, which wont work if you hook up the modem line into "data out" and the router line into "data in", which confuses me in the first place. Shouldn't that be the other way around?

Anyways, I tried wifi and wired connection. I didn't try to bypass the router completely but I don't think it will make a difference. I decided to get a ladder and look at the "modem" and I was a little shocked to say the least. I opened up the big plastic thing that stores it and it literally is just a piece of like motherboard mounted with one little screw, covered in ladybugs and cobwebs. So I sighed and just left it alone.

So now, average ping is very tolerable. 50-100. Speed is at about 2mbps which is fine. I just don... Read more

Before i start, I am Running:

WinXP-Pro, Service Pack 3
2.22 GHz Athlon 64 3500+ Processor
2 Gigs of RAM
ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT Graphics Card

What appears to happen is that once in a blue moon, without any prior warning, the entire computer will lock up solid for about 15 seconds then black screen me and none of my input or output devices will work. That means, Mouse, Keyboard, sound, Monitors, etc. They all die simultaneously. The odd part is, the computer is still working as far as I can tell as the system doesn't even hiccup.

It WAS doing this more than it is now, however it seems to have reduced somewhat. I'm guessing that it has something to do with my power supply as me replacing the 350 watt supply with a 550 watt supply (for a completely different problem) seems to have reduced the occurence of this issue. Instead of happening once or twice a week it now happens once or twice every 2 or 3 weeks. It's still annoying when it happens. Anyone have any clue?

When you boot back into your machine...check the event logs and see whats happening just prior to the failure. If you can, check after a couple of occurrences and see if there are any similarities that might point you in the right direction. Anybody else have an idea?

Question: Y500 randomly dies

Hello, Borught a y500 on amazon a few months ago, its runs great. However, the laptop suddenly just dies randomly, no blue screen, no shut down menu. It just dies, I reboot and check event viewer and its says it crashed(kennel-power). So then I checked for viruses, ran scans for chkdsk, sfc /scannow, and memory diagnostics, everything was fine. It also didn't overheat since the laptop died without gaming at all. The barrtery was plugged in as well I reset windows 8 just to check if its the OS's fault. It just died again today. If it's a hardware issue, what can I do to find out what component of hte computer is wonky? Would the limited warranty help me?

Question: W510 shuts down

Hello everyone, About a week ago My W510 started behaving strangely. It would abruptly shut down, usually while looking at a content-heavy web-page (e.g., youtube vido). Just before the shutdown, the hard drive light would come on as if there was a problem reading/writing. I wanted to replace the drive anyway, so I did that, and it woks better but the problem didn't go away completely. I run the PC doctor tests. The exact same shut down happens during the keyboard power on self-test. Every other test I run is fine, but if I try to run the the keyboard power on self-test, the laptop clicks off. At one point I had a similar problem with my old Dell, turned out there was a short in one of the cables; the shut-down I am experiencing now looks alarmingly similar: like something is shorting out. The only other thing I did so far was to take the keyboard off and clean underneath, and clean the fan (may be the problem has to do with heat???) Since then it only shut down once. Suggestions welcome. Thank you in advance.

Answer:W510 shuts down

if cleaning fixes the problem. Then i think it is to do with overheating. Try to repaste the CPU/GPU again to ensure it is working properly.

I have a Dell Inspiron 15-5547 running Win 8.1. Every now and then the scroll feature (two fingers vertical swipe to scroll the screen), and the two finger tap for right click, will stop working. When this happens, all the other features on the touchpad seem to work. If I restart the laptop it starts working again. I've tried going into services.msc and setting 'Human Interface Devices" to automatic startup, but it doesn't help. There's something else pretty weird also... When I go into the system tray (lower right), right click the touchpad icon, and select Touchpad Properties, it takes me into the Dell Pointing Devices windows. Inside this window, there is a sliding switch to disable the touchpad. When I disable it, the touchpad still works. Weird. Does anybody have any ideas how I can get this sorted out. I'm also using a wireless USB mouse on the same laptop, not sure if that makes a difference. Thanks.

Answer:Touchpad scroll dies randomly

Hi Jools

Personally I would look to see what touchpad driver version you are using and then either update it with an in-place update, or uninstall (my favourite option, then install new driver) the current driver and then re-install, as it may just be a slight corruption.

Latest driver HERE
Also a thought, when the touchpad stops with the scroll feature, had your laptop been left not used for a period of time, like hibernation?

My internet connection on my Vista machine dies after a few hours. If I restart, the connection will work again, but will die after a few hours again. I've used my computer with several different routers and for example in my friends' home network so I know the problem is in my computer because the internet connection always dies the same way. Usually if I'm listening music from my Spotify, that connection oddly stays on with that, same goes with some java based games like net poker and so on...messenger connection problem diagnostics say that problems are in the ports. Sometimes i've just been too tired to reboot and just kept doing something else with my computer without the internet connection then maybe an hour later the connection comes back to life. This problem is getting kinda old already that it's not funny anymore. Would appreciate if somebody had even a slight suggestion to repair this problem.

Not sure if I should post this here or the networking forum but I assume some nice patron will direct me to the correct place if I'm wrong.

For a while now, and for no apparent reason, my internet connection completely dies. But, it's only to my computer. My computer will slow down DRAMATICALLY, stuttering violently as I try to do anything. But if I restart my computer it comes back on as if no problem was ever there.

I am hooked through a router through an ethernet cable and my wife is connected to it wirelessly and she is never affected.

Is this an XP problem, hardware, or maybe even the hardwire ports of my router?

Help! =(

Hi! T420 touchpad dies and trackpoint keeps on working. Sometimes after some time the trackpoint may also die. After boot, touchpad & trackpad recovers and is working maybe for an hour, or a day. Then it reoccurs. This happens randomly on some T420's, while other T420's doesnt encounter it never-ever. Any tips how to troubleshoot this one? Ran Lenovo PC Doctor and everything is fine, also cant find anything suspicious in Windows logs. Thanks in advance!

Got my X1 Carbon yesterday. Does have the loose clickpad. Worse issue - it would power down randomly - as in you are typing and suddenly it goes completely dead, as in "lights out" or someone pull the plug type dead. Also does not sleep properly - often when it goes to sleep it dies and you get an improper windows shutdown warning when you restart it. Happens both with AC power and battery power. Was on hold for 1.5 hours trying to reach a sales rep to make an exchange and got disconnected. Tried to do factory restore just to see what will happen but F11 on startup does not work. The notebook looks great but otherwise I can't say I am very happy with my experience.

I've just bought the components for a new PC, and a friend has built it for me. Everything works fine for hours at a time, I can be playing games, browsing the internet, whatever. Then all of a sudden the PC cuts out, exactly as it would in a power cut, except for an almighty fan noise that kicks in and stays on until I hold the power button down to force the power off. When I say an almighty fan noise, I mean the loudest noise I've ever heard a PC make. I thought it was a hair-dryer turning itself on in the room the first time it happened.

Temperature doesn't seem to be an issue, everything's always around 40 degrees, and before I took it home the guy who built it stress tested it for hours up to 90 degrees without any problem. It has always cut out during web browsing (never whilst gaming) although that's probably just a coincidence.

Any suggestions? I literally have no clue whatsoever, what with being somewhat PC illiterate.

Well... I had a Win 7 Ultimate 64bit on this very machine (the one in my preferences) for almost 3 years until the moment when I said to myself: OK, time to refresh. And that only because my port 80 would die sometimes....sometimes thrice an hour for 10-15 min, sometimes twice a day. But it would happen every day. I re-installed with the hope it was just a bad Win installation but it happened again after just an hour in. What I tried? Well, I certainly tried a new router, but it didn't help. I knew it wouldn't since I also run Linux and OS X in home network and none is affected by this. I scanned old and new Win 7 with every possible malware finder, antivirus..etc. Even bought one (I have an "allergy" when it comes to A/Vs and such in general).. I went drastic today, I disconnected all devices (hdds, usbs, dvdroms, pcie) just to prove my point.. left a single 60 GB SSD with brand new win 7 with default drivers .. Took several hours but I still lost port 80 (it seems to be just port 80 since only browsers and windows LIVE are affected on my system)...Skype, FTP, rsync.. they'll all work just fine while nothing else web-wise does.

Help please! Any suggestions will be tested and reported.

What do you mean by "port 80 dies"? skype, ftp all works as you say. So not a tcp/ip routing/connection problem.

Hi everyone, I've been having the same problem for months now and have finally decided to try to get some help after attempting multiple fixes. I use both a wired connection and wireless connection on my new laptop depending on where I am in the house (if I'm hooked up to my docking station its wired, otherwise i'll be on the wireless). The wired connection works fine, but the wireless connection will often completely die on me without any apparent cause. I'm pretty sure the problem is with my laptop due to the following reasons:

1) My dad uses the same connection when he works from home, and told me he doesn't have any problems with it.
2) Just for testing services, I tried using a neighbors WiFi connection, and received the same results.

I've tried changing my DNS server between OpenDNS, Google's DNS, etc. and have not had any luck. I made sure my wireless cards weren't sleeping by un-checking 'allow the computer to turn off this device to save power'. I uninstalled Hamachi to make sure it wasn't messing up any of my settings and still had the same problems. I've updated all my drivers and even re-installed them.

Just to describe what exactly happens during these disconnects, any live connections prior to the point where the internet disconnects stay alive (usually, such as Skype calls, AIM connections, certain games, etc.) and will stay open until closed. Web pages behave in a similar fashion, and in fact will ... Read more

I've had this laptop over a year now, and just recently I've noticed when I leave it on a while and come back, either the audio of the entire laptop will die, or online videos just won't play. After restarting it goes back to normal until a few hours later when it happens again. I'm not sure what to do here. Can anyone help me out?

Answer:Audio/Video randomly dies?

You are not alone with this problem, since the last windows 8 update there is sound problems with a lot of PCs. You can try this quick solution here :

You just need to enter to the Control Panel -> security and System -> System -> Device Manager

Then look for "sound, video and game controllers" put the cursor over it press right-click and select "scan for hardware changes"

3 secs after that you will have your sound working again, you gonna need to repeat this procedure every time the sound is gone in your PC and till now it always worked to me.

This should solve your problem for now, we need to wait for Microsoft's next windows 8 update, it hopefully will fix the problem in a more permanent way.

My computer has been randomly dying when i play graphic intense games. (Everquest 2, World of Warcraft, etc) The monitor says no signal and goes to standby and the sound plays the last sound playing for a few loops. I need to hold down the power button to turn it off. Sometimes after this happens the computer refuses to turn on afterwards, i would have to try a couple of times.

I have tried booting with only 1 of the 2 ram sticks (for both) and came with the same results. If the computer was already able to boot, it will. If it wasn't, it wont. I do not have an extra video card to test, and do not want to buy one until i know it REALLY is the problem.

Any input/ suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Hi,I've got Lenovo W510. A few months ago it started freezing and after a few seconds it shuts down.I replaced the power adapter and since then it hardly happened till now. The previous power adapter had only 2 wires without grounding, the new adapter got 3 wires. When I used the old adapter and connected a USB printer or external hard drives I felt a weak current when touching the metal parts, such as the fingerprint reader. It doesn't happen with the new power adapter.A few days ago the computer started again to freeze and shut down. Sometimes it works ok for a couple days and on other occasions it freezes and shuts down every few minutes.I got twice BSODs of machine_check_exception 0x009c, I don't know the specific codes, didn't have the time to read them before the computer shut down and no dump files were written.Sometimes when turning on the computer there is a message SMBIOS table mismatch updating. It isn't heat, I monitor the temperature regularly and clean the dust.I tried to replace the battery, ram sticks, and Hard disk.It is probably isn't a software issue either since it happens with 2 different HD one of them with older drivers that used to work before I upgraded that HD more than a year ago.I also tried to disconnect the power adapter and remove the battery and press a few time on the power button. I would greatly appreciate any help.

As the title says, my mouse stops working for a couple of seconds and then starts working perfectly again. It mainly happens when I am playing BF3, the game freezes for a second, then I hear the usb-removal sound Windows makes and the game unfreezes but the mouse is dead, then game freezes again for a second and mouse starts working. During the moment mouse is dead all other USB connected things works, only mouse that dies.
It has happened a few times before when im not in any game.

Why is this happening? I have never had any problem with this before.
I have tried putting my mouse a different USB port and it helped for a day or two and then it happened again.

My computer is being extremely odd right now. Randomly, usually while gaming but at other times also, it will just die. When this happens, it kinda just freezes while repeating the same sound on a loop. It loses all video and sounds like all the insides shut off. When it does this, hitting reset doesn't really work, and usually I cannot turn it off and back on. If I try, I get no beep in POST which indicates to me it would be CPU or MoBo...maybe a power supply?

If I unplug the power from the back for a minute, I can restart it and it will go through POST with the beep and all, and say CPU is unworkable or has been changed, and then play fine for anywhere between 5 minutes to many hours with no problems, then it will happen again.

I cannot tell what wattage my PS is. I built most of this computer about 5 years ago, and have since modded the power supply case, and lost the sticker. The CPU is the original one I got when I built it, the MoBo is 4 years old, and the video card is new.

Hello, I've been having this problem for a little while now, and I figured this would be the right section to post it in (if not, please feel free to move it). This is the problem I've been having. While playing a 3D game, after a short while, one of 3 things will happen :1. The screen goes completely black and I'm left with no choice but to restart my computer.2. Similar to number one, except now the screen has random blocks of crazy colors all over, and I'm still left with no choice but to restart.3. The computer saves me the trouble of having to hit the power button, and just goes ahead and instantly restarts itself (screen goes black for a sec, and then I'm on the start up screen). And one more problem that I've chosen to separate from those 3; sometimes my computer just completely freezes and I need to restart. This happens seemingly randomly, at any time.I suspect this has something to do with a new video card I installed recently. I've had those 3 problems a bit before, but they are occurring much more frequently with the new card, and the random freezing thing is something new. So perhaps I installed it incorrectly, or its in some way not compatible with my system? I don't know, thats why I come here to ask you guys, any ideas whats going on?Video Card : Nvidia GeForce FX 5200**Might be worth noting that I did not purchase this hardware, it was given to me by a friend, therefor I have no documentation or disc with it**Misc System... Hi there,

I can't seem to figure this problem out. Every so often (from seconds to a couple minutes) my internet connection will fail, but only for less than a second. Typically no one would even notice this, but it becomes a problem when you use software like Messenger or you play games online. The disconnection is long enough to sign you off.

I've been watching a ping I set to for a good 10 minutes, and sure enough, there are occasional spots where for just 1-3 attemps it will time out, then get replies just fine again.

I use a wired ethernet connection, not wireless. The ethernet port is part of my motherboard, its a fairly modern motherboard, not an old one, and I made sure the driver for it was up to date. Any ideas?

I have Lenovo T500 Thinkpad for around one year. The laptop started to die randomly without any notification, no blue screen, no shut down, it just dies as if there is no power to the laptop. First I thought it could be a problem with the battery so I replaced my battery with the battery of another Lenovo T500. Even after that the problem persisted. So I removed the battery and just connected the laptop to AC power. The laptop does not die any more and I didnt face any issues. What could cause a problem like this? Whenever I connect the battery, the battery icon on the task bar says its charging and even if I use the battery alone the laptop works fine for sometime until it dies randomly. Any help is greatly appreciated.  Thanks

I have one laptop with Windows XP on it. The problem is that keyboard and mousepad both all together die randomly but usb mouse still works. This error occurs randomly. Not everytime i use the computer.

Anyone got the same problems?
Thanks in advance!

Answer:Keyboard / mousepad on laptop dies randomly

well based on the info provided my first guess would be that the keyboard is shot.... or ... if its a toshiba TE 2000 it might be the connector that the the keyboard ribbon connects to might be loose and need resoldering...but that would be the only 2 i can think of right at the moment... let us know how you fix it so it can possibly be of help to others

Hi Everyone

In my previous house I would lose connection to the internet about 2-3 times a week. Since moving into my new house it happens more like 5-15 times a day. The internet light on my modem goes out and the broadband light blinks on and off.

95% of the time when I lose the connection it is for less than 2 minutes. But on some occasions it can take a half hour to work again.

Some more info:
- It happens on all 6 computers/devices in my household at the same time. (2 Macs, Win7 PC, iPad, iPod, PS3).
- All devices are connected wirelessly to modem. But, I have also tried Ethernet and still have same problem.
- I have tried 2 modems (including a brand new one that my ISP sent after I complained).
- I have tried using different jack points and cables.
- When the connection fails, I am still able to wirelessly access my modems config page. So wifi connection is not the issue.
- My ISP sent a technician out. He replaced one cable out by the road, but this did not solve the problem.

I have spent a few hours over multiple days on the phone with my ISP. First they said there was no problem with the line. Then they said there is definitively something wrong with the line. Then nothing wrong, then something wrong. Finally after they monitored the line for 3 separate 24 periods, they decided that the problem was solved. And I thought so too... I had good connection for about 36 hours. But then it started failing again, so far today I have lost connection about 10 times... Read more

Hello there,
I've been pondering around this problem for quite a while now and I finally decided to inquire the mighty crowds of computer wisdom i.e. you all

I've had this exact same problem in my previous system (with Windows 7 32-bit and quite a bit different internals) but it wasn't nearly as frequent as it is now (with Windows 7 64-bit and brand new CPU/MB/RAM/GPU) - however, this problem never happened on my previous box while it had Windows XP installed for a short while. Namely, the audio in Windows would stop working at random, every app that uses an audio interface would freeze when attempting to access any sink, I can't change the volume or mute anything, and I cannot even reset the Windows Audio service (reset times out) when that happens - the only solution is to reboot after which everything works just fine. The only difference between my old system and this one is that now I rarely get the reset procedure to 'freeze' on 'explorer.exe - Playing log-off sound...' (requiring to force restart to continue the process), but now it more often hangs at 'Shutting down...' screen requiring a physical restart.

My audio stack consists of the integrated sound (disabled, I don't need it, but in my previous setup it was enabled) and two USB-based sound sinks, namely Logitech Z Cin?ma speakers (Default Device) and Logitech G930 headset (Default Communications Device). Both are connected directly to the motherboard USB ports so it's not a problem with wonky USB hubs.

The pr... Read more

Answer:Windows audio randomly dies (probably USB-related)

Hiyya inco and welcome for starters I am definitely no expert mate I run a straight forward Asus Xonar DG card (the Xonar supports 7:1 systems) with my Ivy B with a Logitec Z 506 speaker set up and I have no probs at all, and it is a fairly cheap card at that.
Now I don't know what your audio set up is and it sounds like Ben Hur to me but just as a suggestion why not try a different brand card? I just really like the Asus control module that comes with mine and Asus do a really nice range of sound cards.

I am just getting a gut feeling the Logitec card is not the full dollar.

It all started when i opened some foreign file and it mustve been a virus or something. That triggered my computer to make these weird whirring clicky noises. Then my computer shut down. That day, i tryied to turn it on, it worked. However, the monitor didnt display anything. The computer was running but something to do with the bios just wasn't working.
Later on, my father fixed it.
However. NOW, the computer randomly shuts off by itself.
I'd start the computer on, and usually, the computer would start to make these noises similar to that of a computer reading a disc.
after the noises, the computer shuts off, and restarts by itself.
Anyone have any ideas?

I have a brand new W510 (2 weeks old).  Ever since using it I have found that intermittently when I close the lid (and put the computer into sleep mode), when I open the lid, it restarts the machine and all opened files are closed.   The last time it did this the laptop would not restart with 'unidentified operating system' errors etc.  When I did a hard reboot, all was fine. I'm worried this is going to continue and cause damage to the machine. Any help much appreciated.

Answer:W510 shuts down whilst sleeping

Does it happen immediatley after closing the lid? Or does it crash right as you open the lid? In other words, is it sleeping peacefully until this happens or does it happen right after it tries to go to sleep?

I got this laptop 2 months ago and it worked just fine but lately it's been dying randomly (the battery was at 98%) for absolutely no reason, no prompts all i can hear is a sound coming from the hard disk just as if the laptop was force shut down by holding the power button key. The laptop temperatures weren't high at the time (mostly all components @ 45°C). I use this laptop for college and it's been REALLY unreliable & I can't return it at this time since I'm at a dorm and i don't think it would even get a RMA since it happens randomly (you can't expect it at all - i only had word and microsoft edge opened and poof it's dead) - also i can always start it again instantly but SOMETIMES it dies again in the booting process. Also I successfully ran an Aida64 stress test until the battery died normally (it did NOT shut down). Any suggestions on what i should do? Edit: oops i sent this twice by accident

I have had my 3000 N100 Thinkpad for around 2 years now and after a year and a half I realised the Battery was no longer charging, soon after this happened my Laptop would just die randomly, when I say die I mean there is no shutdown screen  it is as iff all power to the p.c. suddenly stopped. At first I though it must be a Virus but after numerous scans and re-installing Windows the problem re-occured, Today I opened the P.C. and checked the fan as I thought maybe it was over heating and eventually giving in, I was relieved to see a load of dust and used the vacumn to clear the fan.I thought that would fix the problem but now if anything it seems worse, I know the battery is dead as the charge level is 0 and the battery indicator on the front of the laptop flashes 5 times organge before disappears completely...In a Final attempt I have disconnected the battery completely and am now running it only on the power adapter, I don't know if this will work but I need to do something...What could cause a problem like this, all of my settings are correct my power settings are set to always on with no hibernation.Any help will be wonderful. Thanks

Maybe the battery just went bad. The only way I can think of to test it would be to try the battery in another Lenovo 3000 or to try a new battery in your Lenovo 3000.

Yet another problem with my peice of crap i call the "computer".

I got a new monitor at xmas, hoping to solve the problems i was haveing with my old one too no avail however.

Sometimes when im playing games etc it just looses the signal from the computer. Im using a 9800 pro 128MB graphics card, and cant understand why this is happening. The computer is still running fine though. It just wont display anything. Why could this be? I only got the card 3 months ago, it shoudlnt be doing this. It also at random intervals decides to artifact and under both circumstances i have to switch off for a while and wait before it will work again.

Things ive checked.

The card i sseated properly.
uninstalled it and reinstalled it
using latest drivers.
Using Direct X 9c
On board VGA automatically disables when AGP card is plugged in.
when uninstalled it seems to run fine from the motherboard connection (Hence im thinking dodgy card)
The car dis connected to the power supply as is nescessary.

Im totally stumped here. I can live with the situation but its not ideal, especially whe im playing gamesa and it just dies on me. Its as though the card is stopping sending the signal to my monitor.

Could this be a dodgy card? If so who do i contact about it? The place i bought the card from, or the manufacturer??

Any help would be great. Thanks.

I've been having an issue with my X270 laptop since I bought it. The laptop is running Windows 10. What happens is randomly (this can take weeks, or days) the trackpad and pointing stick completely stops working. The only solution is to uninstall the drivers and reinstall them using an external mouse. I've tried various versions of the drivers, including the latest, and it still continues to happen. Any solutions to fix this?

So this time the problem started out as a simple issue. Whenever I bump the desk or move the keyboard out with too much force, the computer shuts off. Everybody told me that it could have been a loose connection so I checked it all and replugged everything back in. The computer starting working fine for about 5 hours then it just shut off randomly while I was playing a game. This time, though, it shut off without me bumping into anything. SO, is this a power supply issue? I'm using a 550-watt supply while running a 7800 GT. This is the right power amount so that's not my concern. And now the problem has gotten worse to the point where I turn on the computer and nothing shows up again. Windows doesn't load and the screen is on too. You here the fans and everything but nothing will load. All my parts from my old issue were replaced EXCEPT the power supply and CD-drive. I don't think it could be another loose connection b/c now nothing even shows up. Please help!!!

Answer:Power shuts off randomly, and any movement around computer shuts it off

Have you tried plugging into a different surge protector and different outlet?

Hello. First of all, thank you for reading my post. I recently discovered a Trojan on my computer and instead of going through the tedias process of getting rid of it, I decided to wipe my hard drive and load a 64 bit version of windows 7 ( an upgrade from the previous 32 bit version I had with the virus). The installation went smoothly and I began to download most of my drivers with no issues. I even downloaded World of Warcraft with no issues. I turned my computer off and got some sleep. I returned only to see that my computer would keep restarting during the start up process.

So, knowin a little about computers, I shut everything down. Checked and cleaned the inside of my PC. Re-set the memory and reset the battery to reload BIOS. I put everything back together, and it started up no problem. Success!!! NO! As I began surfing the internet, IE will randomly shut down and just keep doing it. As I scrambled for a solution to this very annoying problem, my computer would shut down, sending me to a blue screen which states a bunch of stuff that I don't understand. Being the hands on guy I am, I went back to search for a solution with the new information. I figured that maybe BIOS wasn't updated or that I didn't have all the needed drivers downloaded yet.

So I went to download some more updates and every time I go to download something I get a setup error or something that keeps the download from finishing! So, I threw my hands up and came here, hoping that som... Read more

Hi,Just received my new TP W510 and have been facing random freezing several times in a day. I did a clean install with Win7 Ultimate and downloaded all latest drivers from Lenovo support page but the freezing didn't stop. It especially happens frequently when playing a video, but when it freezes I could still hear the video playing but the PC is not responding to any mouse of keyboard commands. I thought it could be a display driver issue so I uninstalled the driver. Since I did that, I didnt face any issues and I left the PC running for 3 days now.Looks like there is an issue with the Nvidia FX 880 driver (I also downloaded the latest one directly from the Nvidia website but that also kept freezing my system).Any thoughts??? My Config:Win 7 Ultimate x64Intel Core i7 Q72016GB RAMNvidia Quadro FX 880M  Thanks,Ash

My W510 three or four times now has suddenly switched off - I hear a clicking (possibly the disk drive turning itself off) and a fraction of a second later it's powered off, no BSOD or any other warning. This was happening before my disk started giving errors, so I replaced the disk but it's still happening so I doubt it's the disk that's causing it.

I am a former employee not a support professional so any help I offer here is as a fellow user.

Ok I"ve been haivng a problem with my computer lately. First of all, It started when my computer suddenly froze, So I turned it off( by holdin fown power button) Then when I turned it back on,it would load into the BIOs screen(DELL logo,w/ status bar) for about 3 secs. then it dies off without notice.
Well recently, someone suggested to reinstall the battery (inside; form mother board). SO I removed it,and placed it back, turn the computer back on. It did all the IDE configuration thing....Then an Alert message came up, stating ALERT!|Previous thermal processor failure.(the first time I did this,it said thermal event/error,now it says this all the time I reinstall battery). Also, I checked the system event log(f12) and noticed, it said " CPUO TEMPERATURE" like 10 times.I think it also said CMOS Battery error, but I think that's from the reinstallation of the battery...
SO anyways, I then proceeded into windows... I was able to log in (it didnt die yet) But then after about 5 minutes, It froze again(just like the very begining),but the computer didn't turn off,it just stayed frozen. I turned off the comp, turn It back on, and did the same thing(shutted off after 3 sec). SO basically It's a repeat. I can only boot up when I reinstall the battery.....but then It does the same thing again(freezes...)

Hi, I have a 3 year-old ThinkPad X60s. I have a problem with my battery (Li-Ion FRU 93P5030). When unplugged, the battery works until it is about 60% full. Then, the system suddendly goes into hybernation. When I plug it in, the system resumes but it shows the battery at 0% capacity. The Power Manager shows the battery is "in good condition" and I have already performed a reset. Browsing the web I saw Lenovo recalled some of these batteries but when I run the diagnosis tool it says my battery doesn't classify for a recall. What can I do? But I can't understand, why it happens under Windows and even in BIOS (when I try to switch boot device, for example)! I have to Ctl-Alt-Del and restart in order to work around. After a re-start machine appears to behave normally. I originally thought problem was overheating, opened up machine and re-pasted internals, not the problem. I'm guessing (layperson) that somehow two PM's (software) are getting enabled? My BIOS is 1.45. The Power Manager Software is V6.67.5. The Power Manager Driver is This includes a (twice sent) Windows PM patch, no KB number associated with either of them. Machine is normally docked. I uninstalled Windows KB3035583, to halt the Windows 10 install. Sticking with WIN 7 for now. I can't be the only person with this issue. Hello, I have the following problem with my brandnew Lenovo Edge 545 System: After exchanging my 1Tb HDD with a 512 Gb SDD and installing all drivers from the Lenovo Homepage, I also installed some games. With Diablo III, Dota 2 and Counter-Strike Source I have the following problem: Shortly after I start the game, the fan starts to run really loudly and after maybe 30sec the ThinkPad shuts down immediately to black screen. Diablo and CSS are working fine, now that I start them in Compatibility Mode, but for Dota this is not possible, as it is started via Steam. Also I think it is only a workaround and there must be a problem somewhere with my computer. The CPU usage is on constant 30 - 40% alltough the fan is turning like hell. I am using Windows 7, 64bit. Has anyone had the same problems, or maybe even a solution? EDIT: It seems as if the AMD Radeon HD 8570M is heating up very fast. From 40 to 95°C in ca. 30sec. What can I do against this? The driver is up to date.

I can start up the computer, it gets to the windows screen then the screen flickers on and off then the whole thing dies and I get nothing.

What could this be? I can't press anything or go to any diagonstics because I can't get past the windows screen.

I haven't installed anything recently.

Answer:Display flickers then dies

Can you provide us with some more information? What kind of of system are you running? Windows screen displays after bios, can you access bios setup? It could be so many vastly different things at this point, that's probably why you haven't gotten a lot of answers yet.

I have a pc with 5200 dual proc chip 2.5 mghz. It has 4 gig memory. I have an nvidia geforce 610 external graphics card running 2 monitors. Everything was working fine until I installed windows up date. One of the updates was for the graphics card. Almost immediately after upgrade, I started having problems. Unit may run 10 minutes or several hours, then screen goes black and unit turns off. I have a dual boot machine, so I tried running under xp. It ran all day yesterday. No problem. I also ran it with the integrated video port and that worked ok. This morning I booted into windows 8, within 10 ninutes it died. I get an event id of 41. How do i figure out which upgrade causing problem and how do I remove it. I was gonna try restore However it wasnt configered to run before this happened.

Hi everyone,

I am actually a mac user having trouble with windows 7 (home premium I believe) installed using bootcamp. I have been using it to play some games over the past 6 months (and yes, even though it's a macbook I can run skyrim fine on ultra graphics ).

However, recently when I start it up, right before the login screen my display dies, and nothing seems to respond. The only reason I know it hasn't shut off is because it won't restart until I hold my power button to turn it off, then press it again to start up my computer. I can start it in safe mode but I don't really know what to do to amend this issue.

I'm pretty unfamiliar with windows for the most part so I'm not really sure what to do to fix the issue short of reinstalling everything. I really don't want to do this however as it took me some time to install all the various mods for skyrim in the correct order (I feel like it's in a very delicate balance, but that could just be me).

I should probably also add that my mac side works perfectly fine, so I don't think it's a hardware thing.

Any ideas on how to fix this would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

Answer:My display dies when I boot

Try a System Restore point. It is possible to do it before windows loads and in safe mode as well.

Since you are on a mac, it makes things slightly different.

When did the problem start? Anything change on the system when the problem began?

This has been going on for a while but didn't realize I had a spot to post my problem until now...My display only stays on for a short while and it is very reddish when on (battery or AC Power).  I have to keep turning it on and off or switching back and forth to external display to see anything.  I have been relagated to using it as a desktop with an external monitor.  Any thoughts on what is wrong (display or adapter?)  and if it is worth the fix and what the likely fix would be? Thanks in advance.

Answer:Display Dies for T42p

if the colour of the LCD is turning pinkish reddish, then it is your LCD CCFL backlight that is going out. You need to either change the CCFL or swap the LCD. This problem is reminiscent of the fluorescent light globes just before it fails.

I bought new pc parts this week and also bought Windows 10 Home while I was at it, due to W7 not accepting USB 3.0. But shortly after, I started having bad audio problems when using my headset, which is connected to my motherboard's rear 3.5mm output.

The symptoms consist of:
- The audio cutting out suddenly after just a few minutes of usage, e.g. 30 seconds of youtube, combined with the microphone not picking up any audio.

- Sound panel not responding occassionally or becoming sluggish. Can pop up later when clicking on things like browser tabs.

- High Definition Audio Device disappearing from choosable outputs in the notification area.

- Realtek High Definition Device disappearing from the Device Manager.

- Random pop-ups saying that I've either unplugged an audio device or I've plugged in an audio device multiple times in a row.

- Sound panel showing activity from both random thing I'm playing, and the Test Sound button, but no sound actually playing in the headset.

- Usually the sound cuts out with a small crackle, but other times it's completely silent when it happens. When loading the desktop I can hear some crackling too.

- ARK: Survival Evolved crashing, giving me a memory write error, followed by a notification of a decive being plugged in instantly after.

I've tried:
- Installing the latest drivers through windows update, realtek's latest drivers, motherboard's latest drivers and various .cab updates being rejected because the drivers "are up to date&... Read more

Answer:ThinkPad W510 vs T510?

W510 has less battery life due to the more powerful CPU and GPU, in addition W510 has USB 3.0 and 4 ram slots. I would definitely go with the W510.

Hello, I purchased a Thinkpad W510 with a blu-ray capable CD ROM Drive. The software aside, I have some problems playing some blu-ray DVDs, for example, Salt. Someone suggested I check to see if the laptop is  HDCP(High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection) capable. I haven't been able to confirm. The video card is a NVIDIA Quardro FX 880M. The help section says to follow these instructions to verify if your system is HDCP-capable:From the NVIDIA Control Panel navigation tree pane, under Display, click View HDCP Status to open the associated page.Select the icon representing the display that you want to verify is HDCP-capable.The page shows one of three possible results:Your system is HDCP-capable.Your system is almost HDCP capable.Your system is not HDCP-capable.Be sure to notice any error or alert messages that explain conditions that prevent or could prevent your system from being HDCP-capable.If you add or remove a display, then exit and then re-enter the View HDCP Status page so that is will update to reflect the status of the new configurationThe problem is I don't get the display option in the navigation tree. Any help would be appreciated. Regards.

This is first time I own a thinkpad. It is an used w510. I like it so far. It was pre-loaded Win7 professional OEM version OS without any other software installed, no software from Lenovo as well. I am trying to familar with it and trying to find any user manual/guide to help me know what I can get from it. Anybody can help me about this? where I can find these docs? My machine type is 4391-B63. I read online and some says there is a GPS on the machine. Is that means I can use it to guide me drive? Now I am trying to buy a battery for it.  By looking at ebay, amazon and Lenovo, I am confused by the price range. I am not sure where I should go for? $159.99, $20 or in between? Where did you buy your battery?

Answer:new thinkpad owner w510

Hello and congratulations on your W510. It's a very fine machine. For all your drivers - manuals - setup guides - hardware maintenance manual, you can find them at Lenovo SupportOn the support start screen, choose the "Think Laptops, Desktops and Server" category to the left. On the next screen, you'll see a Quick Path link just below the header where you enter your 7 digit MTM number. That will open up the main page for your machine. On the right you'll see a Select Task list but there you'll findthe different categories for support. The fastest and safest way to get your machine up to specs with all latest drivers and utilities, I recommend runningthe ThinkVantage System Update (TVSU) Found here:ThinkVantage System Update It will present you with a lot ofoptional software, listed as Critical, Recommended and Optional, and you can select the utilities you want from theOptional list, but I recommend installing all in Critical and Recommended. For a battery, there are many places where you can get one, and the prices vary greatly. The only thing I avoid at allcosts for my ThinkPads is 3rd party batteries. I only use original Lenovo ones, even if they are more expensive, andsince you're probably going for a 9cell for your machine, the original is by far the best option out there. My 2 cents. If anything else pops up, just chime back. Cheers!

Hello friends, I have got a Lenovo ThinkPad W510 Laptop and TEVION 51cm Colour TV Model T21955.My TV has RCA connector (RCA Plugs for composite video (yellow) and stereo audio (white and red)) and a female DE-15 output in a laptop computer ( So I will need "VGA to RCA Converter Adapter cable" ? Something like this ? can I get it? how about the cost? I have started the thread here, but its not much helpful as we dont know if this laptop supports S-Video out through the VGA port. - Jenny

Answer:Need to connect W510 Thinkpad with my TV

You can just get a display port with audio works but the graphic driver have to use lenovo one.VGA to RCA converter doesn't transmit audio but only video.Recommendation, displayport with audio.

I purchased this slice battery with the hopes of dramatically increasing (based upon the huge size & weight) the battery life of my W510 (4389-N9U). While I'm pretty disappointed in less than expected additional battery life, I could live with it if it didn't have another serious flaw.  That flaw is when the W510 is in sleep mode and I disconnect the battery, the W510 apparently loses all power which kills sleep mode and shuts it down completely.  This is with the normal system battery still attached and fully charged. Does anyone know if this is normal, but obviously a design flaw, or is my battery potentially defective?

Answer:W510 with ThinkPad Battery 27++

Although not an answer to your question as I do not have the slice battery - but I was too considering the slice battery and was wondering what your experience is with how much additional battery time it provides.

My w510 has a TOSHIBA MK3261GSYN 320GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 2.5" Internal Notebook Hard Drive, Intel(R) Core(TM) i7 CPU Q 720 @ 1.60GHz, and 7904 mb ram most of it unused. I am using puppy linux for my operating system and I have tried lubuntu as well, both are very fast but when I browse youtube videos my computer slows down greatly. I want to upgrade the hardware to try to solve this. I found the Kingston 2.5" 120gb SATA III SSD and I want to install it to replace my hdd. Will this be enough to help my computer speed? I don't know what CPU I should upgrade it with or whats compatible with my computer but I will appreciate any reccomendations. I have never touched my computers hardware before, and the installation videos I've seen for upgrades of it on youtube just show removing the screws and parts, then installing the part, but I've also read that you need firmware and BIOS updates. Would I need to update my firmware before I install any of these parts? I will appreciate any advice.
