W520 - headphone jack audio works, but not built-in speakers after wipe & reinstall

Question: W520 - headphone jack audio works, but not built-in speakers after wipe & reinstall

I had to wipe my original install due to nasty virus... I've rebuilt my machine, Windows 7 I have the Conexant 20672 SmartAudio HD driver installed, 8.32.23.5, dated: 6/5/2012 I will get an initial pop/click out of the built-in speakers when it tries to play something, but nothing else When I connect headphones up, everything is playing properly Have I disabled the speakers somehow with an Fn +? The speakers off button is not lit. I can't find anything in BIOS that shuts off the speakers Thanks,Branch

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello branchh,

I understand that this can be frustrating for you.
This is the driver you need for you audio, you can download it from here:
http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/detail.page?DocID=DS014918

This should get your speakers and audio up and running again.

Hope this helps,

Alex

I purchased my laptop about a month ago and just over a week ago my internal speakers stopped working and instead just make a very quiet popping/cracking sound when audio is being played. My headphone port still works perfectly tho. Every so often the speakers will start working again randomly but always eventually stop working again. I'm guessing it is a hardware issue and plan on sending it back under warranty but just wanted to make sure as happened very randomly.Cheers

Hi everyone,

Not sure if this is the right place to post this, so please feel free to re-direct if necessary.

I have a brand new Toshiba Satellite A665-S9092 laptop that just started exhibiting a weird problem: I get an occasional crackling, popping sound from whatever I plug into the headphone jack. I've tried with my Bose speakers and two separate sets of headphones. It seems to occur whenever the hard drive is accessed: when the computer is idle, I don't hear a peep, but whenever I e.g. refresh my browser or open a program, it starts crackling. The odd thing is that I don't get this from the built-in laptop speakers - only from whatever I plug into the headphone jack.

Anyone have any idea what could be causing this? One of the main uses of this machine is playing music so this problem is putting a serious crimp in my enjoyment...

(Extra info: under "Sound, Video and Game Controllers" in the Device Manager I have 4 instances of nVidia High Definition Audio, and 1 instance of Realtek High Definition Audio. Checking "driver update" tells me the drivers are up to date. Not sure why there are 4 instances of the nVidia HD Audio.)

Hi, you could download the maintenance and service guide from HP.com to see if the connector is mounted to the mainboard and if it would be a difficult repair.  If so, you might use something like the Sabrent USB audio adapter as a workaround.  I have one and it works well.

Like the subject above says. The headphone jack does work, but after closing the PC and opening the screen again, it does not make any sound. When I plug it in, the pop-up still comes up to alert me that I've plugged in my headphone, but no sound comes out. It seems to work only after I restart my computer.  It began in my second week of owning it.  I've searched the forums, but I was not able to find anything like my problem.

Hi all, I noticed an issue with my Lenovo X1 Yoga 2nd that I didn't have with my older laptop. My monitor is connected through HDMI and has speakers. But sometimes I want to connect headphones to listen using them but the system doesn't switch to the laptop audio adapter automatically based on the trigger of inserting the headphone jack.It would be much more convinient if it did rather than needing to open Playback devices everytime to switch back and forth. My older laptop with Realtek adapter did that. I'm not sure if it's something that Windows did or the Audio driver did. Any ideas how can I get it to switch automatically?

This doesn't always happen, but I've noticed a few times on my T440p that when I have headphones plugged in, sounds comes out of the speakers. The headphones are functional and fully plugged in, yet no sound comes out of them, and the sound comes out of the speakers. I've fixed this multiple times by unplugging the headphones and plugging them back in. Has anyone else had this problem? If so, have you been able to fix it? The reason it is a problem for me is that it distracts those working around me. Thanks. (my problem differs from this one, where sounds comes from both the headphones and speakers)

Answer:T440p: Audio coming from speakers despite headphone being plugged into jack

Look for a multistream option in the Realtek audio control panel. Make sure it's set to unify headphones and speakers.Alternatively, if you want audio to only come out of the headphones and not switch dynamically, go to the Sound control panel in Windows, and set headphones as default.

Hello Eight Forums.

My trouble is the audio output through headphones - background is louder than foreground (especially in music - I often cannot hear the vocals at all; movies however are mostly fine, for reasons unknown to me; but generally, the sound is always different in some way).

I only have one pair of headphones to test it with. However these always worked fine with previous machines, and still do work fine with my iPhone 4. Although they are surely not the case, I cannot with confidence say that if it were a loudspeaker instead things wouldn't have been different.

So this is either a software or a hardware issue.

Software

My computer (details at the bottom) came with a SoundBlaster X-Fi MB3 equalizer program and RealTek High Def Audio drivers. I've uninstalled SoundBlaster hoping it would fix the issue (I didn't need an extra program like that anyway) but alas to no avail. Updating the RealTek drivers did no good still.

The only thing I haven't touched is the ghostly NVIDIA Virtual Audio Device (can it be the source of my trouble?) - I only first noticed it now when copy/pasting the Belarc data. I'll try and find out about it in the meanwhile.

Hardware

I wonder if it perhaps has something to do with my audio jack (laptop's brand new, but you can never know). I have what appears to be mic, headphone, S/PDIF and line in jacks... Is there a way to use the microphone or the line-in to test the headphones? To see if the headphone out is broken.

Any help appreci... Read more

Answer:Messed up headphone audio; want to check headphone jack

First, the "My System Specs" is where you fill in what you have.

Does the internal speakers on the laptop work? Is the audio OK on the internal speakers?

The SoundBlaster program(s) is a software enhancement to the basic audio chip (ReaklTek). Many PC's now come with some type of enhancement such as the SoundBlaster or in the case of HP PC's its "Beats Audio".

Well, I uninstalled my audio drivers and noticed that there was a red led shining from inside the 3.5mm headphone jack, which I assume is a mini optical audio (digital) combo 3.5mm audio (analog) jack, and I am figuring that it determins if there is an optical plug or not using drivers, which is why it turned on when I unistalled my audio drivers. I would like to know for sure before I go and buy a mini optical to toslink adpater cable so I can get better audio quality out (the digital interface does not suffer from the interference that the analog does right?). I did some research (research is a bit of an overstatement) and found no sites that mentioned it, so I have decided to turn to the forums. So, is this an optical jack combo? And, how will it work in terms of the drivers, will it just auto select? Thanks.

Hello Forum, I hope I'm posting this in the right place...?

My device:G780 Notebook (M843RGE I3-2370M), Windows 7
Audio Driver: Conexant Audio Driver for Microsoft Windows 7 Version  8.54.32.50 (Smart Audio: 6.0.131.0)

Situation:My headphone jack is broken. Repair is too expensive. Instead, I want to redirect the audio signal to the microphone jack.

Problem:This seems not to be possible with my SmartAudio interface (Screenshot below). But I found a screenshot of exactly the function I need called "Jack Configuration" in the Help section (second screenshot below). It looks like I dont have the right system configuration (whatever that means, I'm not an IT/PC expert ...) to use this feature.

My question:
Is there any way I can reconfigure the audio jacks on my notebook? Do I need another Conexant Audio Driver software and if yes, which one?

I'm grateful for any helpful reaction!

Hello!

I seem to be having an issue with the headphone jack in my new computer. I just assembled it five days ago (it's my first build and I am very proud). The specs on it are:

Antec 300 case, Gigabyte GA-M78G-DS3H, AMD Athlon 64 X2 5400+ Brisbane 2.8GHz, corsair 550w PSU, Seagate 7200.10 500gb, 2.0 GB of OCZ RAM, Pioneer 20x DVDRW.

This was a budget build so I am currently using the onboard sound and video, which is saving me money but unfortunately I do not have any headphone sound. I have tried swapping both the HDA and AC'97 plugs in the front panel with no luck. There appear to be 5 pins available for use after all the other front panel cords have been plugged in. I tried shifting down the plug down with both HDA and AC'97 but unfortunately that resulted in a lot of white noise and static coming out of my headphones, whereas I would hear absolutely nothing when the cord shifted down to the other four plugs (i can make a diagram for this situation in PS if it helps, it's really hard to explain). Right now I have the ac'97 cord in because I got so frustrated from swapping the cord multiple times that I didn't care to change it.

I've been reading a lot of help on the web and the only advice I have found is to turn off headphone jack detection in the Real Tek Audio Panel, and that hasn't helped either.

If anyone has encountered this problem before and knows how to fix it that would be greatly appreciative. I hope to buy an audigy... Read more

I want to get my MP3 player running through my CD player's speakers. Can anyone help?

Answer:Headphone jack to stereo speakers

Are you talking about a "boom box" type cd player? If so, your stereo needs to have some type of aux input. You can use the headphone jack of the mp3 player as an output but keep the volume low. Inputs are normally line level so they don't need a lot of power sent to them to amplify the music. Infact, sending too much of a signal into an input can damage a stereo. try to balance it so the volume you here from a cd and the mp3 player are the same. .1 watt is enough for the line level input.

This is a problem that has happened twice before. At first I thought it was a fluke, but now I'm very concerned. Restarting my computer, or trying to go back to recovery a week ago has worked, but I don't know what's causing the problem. I get no sound whatsoever from any app, player, window, etc. I just downloaded the latest audio driver, but that did nothing.

Answer:No sound from speakers or headphone jack

if recovering via restarting or recovering the system helps then its for sure not a hardware issue. Any application which you installed could have cause this issue? What machine are you on btw?

Hi, I was just wondering if the Y580 is capable of playing through the headphone jack and the speakers? I tried enabling the stereo mix option in the recording devices and setting it so you can listen it. I tried both options in using the playback through the audio output and the speakers but it seems like when i set it to the default device it creates feed back and its just a mash of sounds. But when i set it to the device that's not the default it does nothing. Anyone have a solution to this?

Hi all

I'm currently using a HP Pavilion dv4-1433us laptop.

The problem I'm having is this:

When I have my 'Default Device' (under Sounds >> Playback) set to Independent Dual Headphones, I get perfect sound from Headphones / Exterior speakers, but the second I disconnect all exterior sound devices, my built in speakers do not play any sound.

When I have my 'Default Device' set to Speakers and Dual Headphones, I only get sound from my built in speakers, even when I have headphones plugged in.

I did not used to have this issue, the built in speakers used to play perfectly, and the headphones would play the second I connected them. I believe this started after I downloaded a patch for IDT High Definition Audio CODEC. I'm not that knowledgeable on computers so I haven't figured out how to fix this.

thanks.

also could you test those speakers on another device too ?

I turned my computer off for a week. The first time it's ever been off in 5 years. It has an onboard Realtek soundcard. It worked perfectly before leaving for vacation. I come back and there is no sound. Headphones work and the speakers work when plugged into the front panel headphone jack.

I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling drivers and making Onboard Sound Card "Enabled" in BIOS. Is it likely that the onboard sound just stopped working while being shut off or is there another underlying issue?

Answer:Got sound from my headphone jack abut nothing from speakers

These systems are auto sensing what is plugged in. You can try reinstalling the sound driver as one thing. Another is a "recycle" of the device - go to the Device Manager, RIGHT click on the entry for the device and then LEFT click "Uninstall" - DO NOT uninstall the drivers. Then restart the PC and when Windows starts it will detect and reinstall the device. If the status with Windows was corrupt this will fix that.

Answer:Solved: microphone to headphone jack and speakers

I use an external mixer for this kind of thing- that way I can not only use the headphones to monitor the inputs, but my mixer allows me to select one input among many while not disturbing the mix.

Even an inexpensive mixer will have multiple mic or high level inputs and many will have the ability to add reverb or other effects. They can also feed one or more computers for recording (and/or backup of main recording).

I usually listen to music with speakers through the headphone jack. When I unplug the speakers, the music plays through the stock laptop speakers like it is supposed to do.

However, all of a sudden, the sound has only worked through these external speakers. It plays fine through the headphone jack, but when I unplug the speakers, the laptop speakers do not work.

I have restored the computer to an earlier point that I know they were working, but still nothing.

The laptop is a Dell Inspiron E1705.

Any help would be appreciated.

My laptop speakers eventually stopped working after I accidentally violently yanked out my headphone plug from the jack.I could ignore that because I usually just use headphones anyway, later down the road however, I found my speaker jack so messed up internally(without needing to take a peek at it) that it makes my speakers LOUDLY  either beep screech shriek or buzz, and this is not a system beep that is quiet but noticeable this is a full on messed up audio problem, when I actually have audio playing (not just the internal fan SOMEHOW coming up in the audio stream, *censored* manufacturers and their laziness.) the audio plays distorted while buzzing etc, should I just open up the laptop and bend it back into place so it does not cause problems, or should I just rip it out? I could rip it out because I have already ordered an USB sound card with headphone/mic jack, but that wont fix the problem, the bigger problem this cause is that my laptop freezes as a result of whenever it happens

I have been using bluetooth speakers with my W520. On a recent trip, away from my bluetooth speakers, I discovered that my built in speakers are not working in regards to music, media player, video playback, etc. Computer sounds still work, but only out of the left speaker.  However there is no playback of any kind. When my bluetooth speakers are turned off or disconnected, the system automatically changes "Speakers  Conexant Smart Audio HD Device" as the default device for playback (in my Playback tab under Sound).  If I play something, I can see a green graph over to the right of the Speakers designated as the default device registering changes as though something is playing, but there is no sound from the speakers.  If I go to Volume Mixer, I see the same thing:  Device:  Speakers is showing the volume at full and WMP is showing that something is playing, but I hear no sound from the speakers.  If I go to configure the built in speakers, I do not hear the test sounds at all. The only other thing I've noticed as a possible clue is that in Control Panel/Hardware and Sound, when I click on Smart Audio, it fails to load.  Instead, I get a notice window reading:  "Failed to Initiate Smart Audio, the Application will now exit." Any ideas?  As inadequate as the built in speakers are, I'd still like to use them when I'm on the road. Busman

Asus M4A78-EM motherboard using Realtek drivers from Asus site.

The front headphone jack did not work until I installed the Realtek drivers from the Asus site.

Actually they didnt work until I checked on Disable Front Panel Detection. That got it going but the rear speakers are still playing.

Mute the Rear Output Device When Front Input Is Plugged In is checked on.

From what I've read this is simply a result of having the front audio panel set up as AC97 instead of HDA. 5 wires versus 7(or is it 9)

I'll include some pics. First one is how the wires are currently configured and the second is a page from the manual.

ImageShack? - Online Photo and Video Hosting
ImageShack? - Online Photo and Video Hosting

With 2 extra pins on the left end of the front audio board not being used I'm wondering what they might be for? Are they not used or would running 2 wires from those pins to the Presence and Sense_send connectors on the audio header on the mb do anything.

Or are there an extra 4 wires used on an HDA front panel? Presence, Sense_send, Sense1_Retur and Sense2_Retur.

TIA

Hi, first post. Hope it's in the right place.

I'm in need of new speakers for my laptop as the old ones have gone kaput. I have a pair or analogue (red&white,+/-) speakers sat in the cupboard. (Technics SB-F950) What is the name of the adapter I would need if I could use these in some way for my laptop? ... or any other 3.5mm jack for that matter.

Hi,

I have an Hp625 running Windows 7 Basic 32 bit - I can play music through my laptops built in speakers without any problems, but when I plug headphones (or external computer speakers) into the headphone jack no sound comes through them (and simultaneously the laptop speakers go mute). My computer is dual boot with ubuntu, and this problem appeared when I upgraded my Ubuntu version - still, I know that the jack works as it is working fine in Ubuntu, and Im sure the problem is fixable within windows!

I have tried for HOURS to fix this problem, and attempted everything obvious, plus read many threads on similar topics. Please help. My computer is using the IDT audio control panel, and according to windows everything us up to date and fine. BUT ITS NOT PLEASE HELP.

Answer:My laptop speakers are working fine, but the headphone jack is not!

Are you experiencing the problem in windows or in ubuntu? Have you installed the sound driver for ubuntu when you upgraded your version of ubuntu. Have you updated the sound driver for windows?

Hello, I have a problem, which many people probably have encountered at some point.

I have this Asus K73SV notebook, but the incident happened - my headphones jack broke and is now stuck inside my notebook. Unfortunately, I can't get it out and my computer still considers that little piece as headphones so my internal speakers makes no sound.

How can I make this work? I have Realtek drivers and I don't have that option where I could disable that jack, doesn't matter which version or from where I download those drivers. And I can only see speakers through my control panel.

I saw there is an option where you can use ForceDisableJD in registry, but there is no such option in my registries.
What should I do? I tried to fix this for the whole day and I'm completely lost.
Thanks in advance.

P.S. Sorry for bad english.

Answer:Broken headphone jack stuck, how to play through speakers?

Try a magnet to see if you can get the broken plug out. You can also try to super glue something to the plug and see if you can pull it out.

The part where you plug the headphones into the tower broke off into the front headphone jack, I then opened up the tower and pushed it out but there is still no sound coming threw the speakers. Now my question is this, regarding the spring, Does it have to be fully extended for the computer not too think anything is in the jack or not? The Spring is still in, but when looking into the hole there is a metal piece that is push over too the left as in the hold is closed, should it be pushed back? (re-bent) or something too that effect.

And if no body knows the answer too this, any way to just disconnect that whole headphone jack to i can have sound threw my speakers again. Running on a Dell Dimension 4600C

thank you

Answer:Headphone Jack doesn't mute speakers? Twist

Hey there Kyleosipad,

I was able to find this nifty Knowledgebase article that gave some insight on how to fix your issue. It looks like an audio setting needs to be adusted:

1.  Go to the Control Panel.
2.  Search for "Realtek HD Audio Manager".
3.  Click Advanced Device Settings.
4.  Click Multi-stream mode.

I hope this helps.

I have a studio xps 16 running vista 64-bit service pack 2. the other day i was on skype and skype mutes all other audio on the computer when on. i ended up uninstalling skype and my built in webcam because i read that together they sometimes screw up audio. so the next day i tried to listen to music, no luck. I ran a diagnostics and when it got to the colored bars and asked if i heard a beep I HEARD THE BEEP so that means the problem is a system problem and not a screwed up sound card. (i think) anyway i updated all of the drivers, the device manager has no ? marks. i talked to dell and the found a virus that MAY have been eating away at my registry. i got rid of that and still no audio. i didnt really wanna touch the regedit because im nervous cuz u can really f up a computer if your not sure what your doing. i also did a system reboot to about a week before it happened with no luck. by the way, under the device manager it says> Sound, video and game cotrollers and then my options are> ATI Function Driver for High Definition Audio - ATI AA01 and> IDT High Definition Audio CODEC

So any ideas guys? i dont wanna re-download the os and start over so what now??

That happened some weeks ago, no software or hardware changes were made prior to speakers gone mute. The other day however speakers were back from malfunction and operative again 100% - for no apparent reason, but as soon i plugged headphone jack in and out - they were gone again!?!? Is there a catch or something that i'm doing wrong!?!? I've tried: removing and reinstalling sound card drivers (no success), different OS (no success), checked headphone jack for foreign objects (found nothing, it looks ok in comparison to other jack (microphone)). No warranty on this machine (expired). Any suggestions??? Thanks in advance.

Like the headline says, I have a problem with sound on my Toshiba laptop (model is Satellite L755-S5110). Sound just randomly switches to headphones, even though they aren't connected. The sound just stops playing from the speakers, and when I plug in headphones, it plays normaly through headphones, and works fine while using them, but when I unplug headphones, the sound then plays from speakers for some time and then again just stops on its own and if I plug headphones again, it plays through them.
First, I thought it was some driver issue with win 10, so I did clean install of windows 7 (it was first installed when I bought my laptop), then again installed all the required drivers from the toshiba site (I checked in the device manager couple of times if all audio drivers were up to date, tried reinstalling/installing again), and the exact same problem remained. I also tried reinstalling audio driver provided from toshiba site, and used microsoft audio driver, and again the same problem.
Also, for example, when the sound stops playing from speakers, i just open Playback devices (where my default speakers device is listed), and the sound starts playing again through speakers (didnt change anything there, just opened it...)
I'd really appreciate if someone could help me with this issue, since I've already tried everything I could think of, and none worked yet.
I'm also not really good with computers, so if you have any possible solutions, please let the instructions be... Read more

thought here; have you checked all the settings to make sure the proper headphone/speaker settings are checked/unchecked?. i would consider updating to that newest driver. If it does not solve the issue you should be able to restore it back to the previous restore point which should undo the driver update.

I recently did a big update, which involved updating the BIOS (from version 1.91 to 1.93). Since then the speakers on the tablet, and headphones when attached, no longer produce sound. Sound works okay from the keyboard speakers. I've tried updating the driver (intel smart sound technology), as well as rolling back, uninstalling and reinstalling the driver. Nothing has worked so far. My best guess is that the BIOS update is responsible, since the tablet speakers and headphones also no longer work in linux, but did before the update. Has anyone else experienced this? Any suggestions for a fix to try before downgrading the bios would be highly appreciated.

It's quite possible sufficient damage was done, either by the plug getting stuck or the work in removing it, that the contacts inside the jack have been forced into cutting the speakers circuits off as happens when plugging into it. From the number of Notebooks I've had to junk and take apart first I'd say the only real solution is a new motherboard or a new Notebook. If it were a Desktop one can disable the onboard audio system and get an Add-in Sound card. Or maybe try the USB type speakers.

If I jiggle the headphone jack it will shut off the latop speakers.  Tried other headphones same result, so problem is in the jack ( worn out, poor solder connections, etc?)  So I ordered a replacement jack from ebay it looks somewhat the same, but really won't know until I open the computer up.  My question has anyone replaced this headphone jack on this model?  Is it soldered in?  If so how did you replace it?  the one I purchased doesn't look like the leads on the replacement jack go beyond the jack itself.

Recently, while playing unreal tournament, I realize there was no sound coming out of the speaker once I unplugged my headphones. I restarted thinking that it would fix the problem, but that didn't help, so I decided to uninstall and reinstall the sound driver from realtek, no good either. Finally I deicided to reformat my computer using the recovery partition. Reassuring myself that this will definitely solve the problem I was shock and confuse as to why no sound came out of the speaker after the recovery. After going to the Realtek sound control panel I realize that the computer thinks or detected that a headphone was plugged in when clearly it wasn't. The sound does work with the headphone in and I am sure the speaker is not damaged because the POST sound, "boommmmm", comes during bootup. I really don't understand what is going on, and I already reformatted the harddrive 2 times.

I have read that the problem can be temporarily solve by replacing the motherboard, but after about a week or two, the same problem will arise. I have also read that other brands including HP, DELL and Sony has similar problems.

I can live without the speakers but I am not sure if further problems will persist with this laptop, since its only been month that I have purchased it.

Thanks for many reply/help.

Answer:Asus G1S speakers not working (stuck in headphone jack mode)

Just some real quick ideas

Speakers plugged into power outlet and on
Speakers plugged into back jack securely
(actually if you heard the startup booom sound, then they must be)

Sound volume up on speaker
Sound volume up on Windows
Sound volume up in the game that you are using
(That might be it)

If you play a song (through Windows media player) can you hear it ?
If so this must be an in game setting (ie mute sound) Please check all settings in the game.

Though the sound would occasionally drop out during the course of a session, tapping the chassis gently would generally restore it. This is no longer the case. How can I uninstall Dell Audio and only have the legacy Realtek Driver and Software in my XPS 14 (L421x)?
I installed some time age the default audio driver that I got from "Dell Drivers", this installed the "Dell Audio" + "MAXX AUDIO 4". I already uninstalled this thing, run CCleaner, deleted the folders, and downloaded and installed the legacy Realtek R 2.73 driver, but this thing (Dell Audio) is always installing with the driver.
My system audio is ridiculously loud. I need to put my system audio in somewhat 5~15 / 100% to get "normal audio", the only way I get realistic "normal audio range" is using my SteelSeries Wireless Headset with USB, this way the system audio goes to 100% automatically and I control the audio with the scroll located in the headset, even in 100% max audio, I get a "normal 100%", it's loud, but not EXTREME like the notebook audio!
Another problem, when I plugin my Apple Earpods, they simple doesn't work, I already tested them with tons of devices at home, and they are working great. The system doesn't even recognize them.
I think that everything would be resolved if I could install the Leagacy Realtek drivers & software, not this *** loaded with bloatware from Dell, I don't care about "MAXX Audio", "MaxxSense" and all this BS. If you look with attention, all the settings located in this "Dell Audio" menu are the same in the Real... Read more

Hello BleepingComputer

I just upgraded my computer a few days ago, and I am having problems with the Front Jack Audio/Headphone.

Normally, I set my Headphone to run simultaneous with my Speaker with Realtek HD audi/Stereo Nix (Disable Front Jack Detection and vice versa), and I could change the volume on both devices separately.
But since I changed the motherboard, when I have realtek installed, it doesn't have the Headphone setting in Sound/Playback.
The headphone work perfectly, but its linked to the Speaker's volume, which is really annoying.
Also, the Realtek layout changed from the last one I got, and doesn't have the "Disable Front Jack Detection" option.

So far, I have tired..
Installing an older version of Realtek driver;
Changing the audio setting in the BIOs (HD or AC97)
Changing the audio connector on the MOBO (Hd or AC97)
Tried multiple compinations with Realtek HD audio manager settings.
Cleaned every plugs/jacks related on that.

So far, I couldn't been able to get the Headphone tag at all when Realtek is installed.

Hi Forum,I use my computer a fair amount for music editing and my amplifier has just died on me.The Amp I was using was very cheap and didn't need to do anything special.Unfortunately, I don't seem to be able to find anything similar now.All I need to do is convert an Audio RCA input to a headphone jack output. The signal needs to be amplified as the input signal static so simply connecting straight to the RCA won't work.Anyone got any ideas of the cheapest way to do this? Or anyone know where I can get a cheap amp with a headphone jack output and RCA input? As always, any help appreciated.

I should imagine a trip to your local Maplins would sort you out. They have a wireless RF Headphone set (L 47 AA) which plugs into your source and Bobs your uncle ! Alternatively they have a cheap audio amp on a board which you can easily convert to your requirements with a couple of RCA plugs and sockets. OR, try EBay ???

recently bought a Dell latitude E6420 i5-2520M 8GB and I am experiencing a very annoying issue with the speakers.
The sound coming from the speakers worked until I plugged in the headphones jack into the computer for the first time - when I unplugged the headphones internal speakers stop to work completely.
What I have tried so far with no success:

Uninstall and reinstall windows audio/sound drivers
Tried Realtek drivers
Disabled headphones
Recovery and reinstall Windows 10

What is strange is that every time I uninstall and reinstall the sound drivers the speakers start to work again until i plug the jack of the headphones and again speakers stop to work. Any Idea?
Please let me know what you need to know about my computer to better understand the problem and I will amend the question accordingly.
Thanks!

Immediately whenever a headphone or earbud is plugged in, the audio is crackly, until I go to the realtek audio manager which doesn't have many options. once I change the Left-Right balance to being very one-sided, the cracks and pops don't occur anymore. However all of the balance is off, voices are not audible, and SFX or background music/tracks are output very bad.Testing the left-right balance, both play the same as if the headphones are mono audio.

My external speakers work fine, are loud for a laptop, really.

When I plug my headphones into the headphone jack (and yes, it's the right jack), there's no change, the audio continues from the external speakers.

I had the motherboard replaced recently, as it went dead, by a Dell tech, so could he have put it back together incorrectly?

Thanks for your help.

Answer:No audio output from headphone jack

It sounds like the headphone jack wasn't connected back to the motherboard, or perhaps the tech mixed up the mic/headphone jacks.

I have a windows 10 laptop and up until yesterday everything was fine , and suddenly it seems that my audio jack doesn;t detect my headphone. I connect my headphone to the audio jack, but the sounds just came out my laptop's speaker. I've tried to switch to my earphone and the result is the same. I've tried several solutions like uninstalling my driver or trying to get to the sounds properties , but the results are the same. Please give me your help , and btw I'm new here.

Speaker audio works fine. Headphones do not recieve any audio signal. Speakers do not play when headphones are plugged in, as they should.  I could not find an official troubleshooting page for this problem on Windows 10.

Tried some troubleshooting from another thread, and a hard reset seemed to have done the trick

Answer:Audio jack seems not detect my headphone

With what you stated you've tried, it could be an internal connection problem. Many Laptops have a small I/O board that is connected via a cable to the main board. If yours is this type, it may require "reseating" (unplug then plug back in) the connector.

I have a relatively new ThinkPad W550s and the audiojack has stopped working.  It no longer works with my headphones or external speakers.  I have checked the devices in the "playback" tab of the Sound box in the Control Panel and the only thing listed is "Speakers".  It does not recognize when i plug in headphones.  What do I do to fix this? Thanks

Possible Solution:
Put Windows to Sleep, then wake it up. Headphone jack audio will be restored.

Problem:
Headphone jack randomly stopped outputting audio.
volume control at 100% and appearing to work normally. Laptop internal speakers worked fine.
Windows detects headphones plugged in, but no sound in headphones.
Uninstall sound card and realtek drivers, reboot did not fix problem.

Tested Linux live CD and headphones worked in Linux.
So hardware was definitely not broken. Only Windows was broken.

(I had this issue recently, so I'm leaving this here for search engine results and anyone who has this problem in the future)

Answer:Possible fix when headphone jack has no audio, everything else normal

Holy crap i love you! I reinstalled Windows 7 recently to fix this problem after trying just about everything, but after a couple of Windows updates my headphone jack wasn't working again. Found your post after filtering search results to recent hits and this trick worked! This problem only creeped up a short while ago, so maybe it has to do with recent Windows updates.

I have this flat screen tv that I bought not too long ago. I would like to connect headphones to this tv to watch regular television but there is one big problem. It does not have a headphone jack nor audio rca(red/white) outputs. This pretty strange since this is a fairy new tv. Is there any way I can connect headphones to this tv? Would I need any adapters like somehow converting one of the audio rca inputs to an output so I can use this cable:

Any suggestions would much be appreciated

I've been watching the Playback devices in the sound control panel and I'm rather confused why this is happening. Essentially, if I am listening to music (or anything for that matter), and I plug in headphones, the computer acknowledges that headphones are plugged in, but keeps the sound going to the previous device. Once I stop the music, then restart it, the sound will go to the headphones. If I unplug the headphones, the sound does not go back to the speakers until whatever program outputting sound restarts.Any ideas on this one?Edit: I should specify. It seems to only route the audio to another device once the program itself is restarted.

Hello, I recently bought a Flex 2-14 with Windows 8.1 installed and upgraded it to Windows 10 (Education Version). I haven't tried the sound on the 8.1 system - directly upgraded to Windows 10.Symptoms:When I plug in headphones, the notebook doesn't recognize them. When I unmute/mute using the F1 keys sound comes through the headphone - terrible quality, though. When I change the volume using the F2/F3 keys that switches it back to the loud speakers and so on.It seems to me that the laptop doesn't recognize the headphones at all. When I look into the sound devices in the taskbar, there aren't any headphones listed.Failed attempts to solve the problem:Updating the drivers from the Lenovo website.Updating drivers from Realtek directly.Sleeping/waking the notebook.Turning off the multichannel option with the Realtek HD Audio-Manager.I think that's pretty much all I've tried so far. Most of the times the problem just stayed the same. Sometimes it wouldn't switch back to the speaker when pressing the F1/F2/F3 keys, but that is all that my attempts changed so far.I'm thankful for any hints!

I have just bought a HP Pavilion 15 n-278sa laptop. It comes with a single 3.5mm port which is used for both audio out and line in. The laptop will work fine when outputting sound through the jack and a pair of headphones. However when i try to use the same port as a line in to record sound from an external device i am having some problems. I am trying to connect my mixer to the laptop using a standard lead, red & white one end and 3.5mm jack on the other. At first I was not getting any change whatsoever under the Recording tab in Sound settings. It just says 'not plugged in' under the microphone. After doing some research I found that the lead I was using, a 3 section plug, would not work and that was the reason there was no change when i plugged it in. I bought a 4 section plug & eureka, the laptop recognised the lead & showed this on the Recording tab. I thought my problem was sorted but this was not the case at all. As soon as I plug the red & white end of the lead into the output on the mixer, the laptop screen displays the 'not plugged in' message again as though I have unplugged the lead at the 3.5mm jack end. This makes no sense to me whatsoever?!? How can it recognise the lead is plugged in with no problems but then go back to not recognising it as soon as the other end is plugged into an external output?! Surely there must be a way of rectifying this as currently its impossible to record any sound on the laptop from... At random times, the audio from my headphones stops working. The computer volume is up, the master volume is up, and in control panel under sound it says that the headphones are working fine. But I cannot hear any sound through any program--music, internet, etc. The sound from the speakers works fine. I tried restarting the computer and it still didn't work.

Hey, I have a flex 14 ideaPad and up until recently everything's been running smoothly audio-wise (when headphones were and were not plugged in), except for randomly a couple of days ago when I plugged headphones into the jack and no sound came through either the headphones or the speakers, although the headphones were detected by the laptop. When I unplugged them sound would come through the speakers again. I tried again with a different set of headphones but the problem reoccurred which lead me to believe the problem is with the laptop, after searching for solutions online I decided to delete and then reinstall the audio drive (Realtech HD Audio Manager). This fixed the problem for a couple of days but now the same problem has returned. I am confused as to whether this is a hardware/software based problem as when I reinstalled the driver it did solve the problem so it couldn't really be hardware related. Would anyone know what the problem is? Should I just keep on deleting and reinstalling the driver? Again the headphones are detected by the laptop, they do not appear as their own playback device though (is this always the case?) Thanks, Tiernan

Answer:Flex 14 Headphone Jack/Audio Issue

The Realtek configuration on the Flex has Windows only show a single, common device for all the audio outputs.

Here's the latest Realtek driver. If the issue persists after, I would recommend a warranty call.

Answer:Speaker/headphone/audio jack problem

Hi, Omarattia  ?

Thank you for writing in to the Lenovo Forum - happy to have you here today.

You can also start by flushing out all static, remove battery and AC adaptor and hold down power button for about 15 seconds.

Check the Playback Devices under Sound Properties (by going to Control Panel > Sound > Playback Devices and see if the Headphone is being set as the default playback device. If not, click on it and set it as the default playback device, try to play a sample sound and observe.

How is the microphone jack on the front panel wired? I was told this jack works as Microphone and LINE IN. Is the jack a 3-pole stereo jack or 4-pole jack? If it is 4-pole, does it comply with CTIA standard wiring (Ring2 is common and Sleeve is microphone)?

Firstly, I updated to Win 10 about 4 months ago and this problem only showed up yesterday.  Please! read this first (opens in new page and I pasted it just in case) http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Desktop-Audio/HP-Envy-Desktop-headphone-jack-not-working/td-p/4010564 Scroll down to where "RandShouse" writes:"1. Click the Start button.2. Type Beats Audio and select the Beats Audio Control Panel.3. Select Advanced Settings from the top menu.4. Under Jack Information uncheck the box that says Enable auto pop up dialog, when device has been plugged in." What's happening is that my laptop's audio is working with earbud, headphones (anything that works with the headphone jack). But the problem is that terrible Beats software. So if I watch a youtube video with the earbuds then remove them, the laptop audio works perfectly fine! Then Beats kicks in and recognizes that I just unplugged a device when it says "You just unplugged a device." Which makes pefect sense. Because I just removed the earbuds. And for a few seconds, the audio from my laptop (speakers) works perfectly fine. But then Beats audio malfunctions and says that "You just plugged a device...". WHICH IS WRONG. So I tried to follow the steps written by RandShouse but step 4 is not even there. For some reason, I don't have the checkbox and I could go to Control Panel > Sys and Security > Hardware and Sound > Realtek. But I don't have realtek (which has it's better way of dis... Read more

Hey guys,So I was working on my HP Pavillion notebook and I accidentally tangled my earphone around my neck and broke them, leaving the headphone 3.5mm tip in the audio jack.        I tried everything to remove it, I soldered the end of the broken piece back onto it and tried to pull it out but couldn't, I tried super glue, and glue gun but everything failed. I even contacted and reached out the service centre in my city but they said they will charge me for the whole board coz they won't fix it and instead they will replace it (even though my laptop was only 2 months old). I have given up on getting rid of the broken piece and want any of you guys to help me changing my driver. I tried to uninstall the audio jack from device manager and enabled the speakers but it still won't work I tried several ways to contact HP support but they are out of reach and won't have a similar issue on its forums and guides. if you guys could help me out, that would be amazing.Thank you!.

Hi guys,

I've signed up here to try and get some help with this issue in particular. After having a quick Google around I've seen that it is a fairly common issue for headphones or earphones to sound tinny on Windows 10 with Realtek HD Audio. However, the only fixes that I could find were driver updates are disabling all sound enhancements. I've tried both of these fixes but yet the problem persists on my end.

Has anyone had this problem before or have any suggestions that may fix the issue? I imagine I'm missing something simple but can't think what it could be for the life of me.

Any help will be much appreciated.

Many thanks,

James

I've recently been having a problem with my headphones. The computer recognizes that I've plugged them in but it still uses the external speakers and there's no sound coming through the headphones. I've tried more than one pair of headphones and it still doesn't work. Restarting the computer worked once but not anymore.

Answer:Speaker/headphone/audio jack problem

There is usually a hardware switch in the socket, which is engaged when you put the plug in. Seems like it might be mechanically broken.
