Preferred Solution: How to deal with 2101: detection error on HDD2(mini SATA)

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I got this error out of the blue the other day on startup, and now I get it every time I restart.  I have tried a number of solutions that I found in these forums (which I'll outline below) but it seems like my system just can't find the drive anymore.  Here's what I've done: 1. ran the ExpressCache program via Command Prompt (eccmd.exe -info) and got this error:  "**ERROR** ECCmd Request device is not available"2. unistalled the ExpressCache software, shut down, pulled the battery opened up the memory module slot cover, removed the mSATA drive and then re mounted it.3.  reinstalled ExpressCache4.  I'm trying to reformat the drive, but I am receiving similar errors     a.  When I try to format the drive (eccmd.exe -format) I get the following error:  HFS Volume is not mounted  **ERROR**  ECCmd Requested device is not available     b.  When I try to create a partition (eccmd.exe -partition) I get the following error:  0x10df (4319).  I looked this up and maybe there are system files missing? I have also tried this but it then says "There is NO mSATA detected, please check mSATA attached" http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/research/hints-or-tips/detail.page?DocID=HT073737 If anyone has any advice, please let me know.

Answer:2101 detection on HDD2 (mini sata) error on my T430

Hello and welcome,

None of the symptoms you describe sound to me like software issues. There is something wrong with the mSATA SSD, or the controller that accesses it - or it needs to be re-inserted in its socket.

Is this machine under warranty?  I'd suggest calling support and running this by them.  They may suggest re-seating the device in its socket, or may offer replacement or some other option.  I don't speak for Lenovo, just offering my personal suggestion.

If I press ESC boot continues fine. Whats strange is I dont eve have a HDD2 Mini Sata, and if I do I have never known about it and I cant set it in device manager, etc. How do I get the machine from stopping to try and detect this? Very annoying.

I ordered the mSata mini 128GB card to go into the half size slot under thge keyboard.  However when I boot I get:  "2101: Detection error on HDD2 (Mini SATA)".  I thought that a half size drive would work, as it does it my Lenovo W520.  However it appears the BIOS does not recognize it.  It does however recognize it in my W520. Has anyone else successfully added a second drive internally to the X1 Carbon Touch? http://www.mfactors.com/msata-mini-half-size-sataiii-ssd-128gb-64gb/

Answer:X1 Carbon - "2101: Detection error on HDD2 (Mini SATA)"

Hello and welcome,

No personal experience here, but I do see this note on the page you linked:

Note: Only works with systems with mSATA standard connector. NOT compatible with Mini PCIe slot for WWAN/wireless cards

The way I read the Hardware Maintenance Manual  that slot is WWAN only, not a WWAN/mSATA combo slot.  Could be wrong.

Hi.  I have a T430s (original owner). At boot-up, I receive a "2101: Detection error on HDD2 (mini sata)", BUT I don't use a Mini SATA!! Windows 10; All drivers current via Lenovo system update (incl. bios 2.69).I have a Crucial SSD drive; I have verified Crucial SSD has latest firmware.I do not have (and have not had) a Mini SATA card installed - this is why the error is so weird to me.I DID recently change the Wifi Switch and cable (which is when the error started showing)The wires that would feed the Mini SSD are still covered with tape from the factory (I forget the colors)I have removed the battery, internal battery and power (and rebooted).  I have reseated the SSD and the DVD drive (and rebooted).I do not have Express software installed; the software that would control the Mini SATA drive (I can't see any "express" software in Add / Remove programs) Can you help me with this annoying mystery?

Except of rare cases with some Crucial (or Corsair, didn't remember) and Samsung drives. Also do not use OCZ drives.

Hi, I just received my T430 about 4 days ago and it's working perfectly until I was trying to install important windows updates. As I was rebooting my laptop after the installation (which fails everytime I don't know why), my computer gave me a loud beep and a error code of 2101 detection error. So I searched this forum and found this solution http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/detail.page?DocID=HT074404 from another post that had the same problem as mine.As i was following the steps,( i did cmd, uninstalled express cache, and did disk managment) but as i went on my disk management i could not find my mSATA. I have a 16 gb mSATA and it was working perfectly fine before. I've noticed on my reboot that it took longer to load and the error message would then come up.So my problem is that I cannot view my mSATA disk on my disk managementThankyou!

Answer:2101 Detection Error: Cannot view my mSATA

The Error 2101: Detection error on HDDx miniSata is a BIOS error. This has nothing to do with the operating system you have installed or any drivers. During the POST, the system does not see the miniSata drive. I (like some others) received my new T530 recently, setup it all up and then a few hours later received this error. The solution is simple. You must open up your ThinkPad. Remove the two keyboard screws and remove the keyboard and RE-SEAT the miniSata drive. There is 1 screw holding the board down. Remove it, re-insert it in. Screw everything back up and voila, no more issue. Go to the Lenovo / ThinkPad Guides and Manuals page for your device (http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/guides-and-manuals/default.page?) and download the Hardware Maintenance Manual for your ThinkPad. There are clear instructions (for those less inclined) on how to remove the keyboard. You do NOT need to disconnect the ribbon cable. Simple / carefully slide the keyboard forward and the miniSata drive will be visible and accessible. You can also use the ExpressCache program to get stats on the miniSata drive and see how it is working. Open a Command Prompt (in Administrator Mode) and issue the command: eccmd -info   -   Display ExpressCache activity informatio eccmd -?   -  Will show you all options eccmd -format   - Will reformat and clear the cache drive. Hopefully, this will help out those out there with this issue. Answer:Edge e530 - Error 2102: Detection error in HDD2 - press escape to continue

That error is coming from BIOS, it means there is something wrong detecting the mSATA SSD.  It could point to a hardware problem.  It is definitely not a software problem.  I would call the support line in your country, and ask what they recommend about it.

Model: T450sEquiped as:Intel i54+4GB RAM256GB SSD (M.2) Configured as boot disk running Win 7 x64500GB HDD as additional storage Issue:Seemingly at random, approx once every one to two weeks while PC is on and at the desktop but not actively being used (meaning no user is sitting in front of it performing tasks) it will error and crash.  The error is a black screen with the following error: 2101: Detection error on SSD1 (M.2) Press Esc to continue. According to the user Esc does nothing and the only escape is to long press the physical power button until a power down occurs.  On reboot the system comes up without issue.  No user has actually seen the crash take place.   MY QUESTION(S):1st.  Is this most likely an issue with the T450s not being able to reliably boot from the m.2 slot or is this more likely an issue with the SSD installed in the m.2 slot?2nd.  Is this something altogether different?  Any (knowledgeable) advice or info appreciated.

Answer:T450s Thinkpad - ERROR 2101: Detection error on SSD1 (M.2)

It is hard to diagnose without seeing it, but my experience has been that the Gen4 and later CPUs (like yours) support a very low power state that is incompatible with some devices. (that would make it a problem with the card) Make sure you have the latest BIOS and power manager software installed. Look in the device manager and find the M.2 SSD. There should be a power management tab. Turn off the option to allow the system shut the device off to save energy.

I've read a lot about the 2101 Detection Error of mSATA issue on x220 with mSATA other than intel 310 installed. Last year I purchased a W520 and an Intel 310 mSATA. They worked fine together untill yesterday. I have windows 7 enterprice 64bit installed on the mSATA and linux installed on an SSD. I have a 500GB HDD installed in the ultrabay, as a shared data volume shared by Windows and Linux. Everytime I try to boot windows, it fails. And during the next reboot, the "2101 Detection Error" shows up. To try to solve this problem I have the mSATA reseated and the 2101 error disappears, until I try to boot windows again. Everything works fine IF I ONLY BOOT LINUX. 2101 Detection Error shows up everytime I TRY TO BOOT WINDOWS UP. I've updated the UEFI BIOS to the latest version which is 1.36 but the problem is still there. I've used the lenovo diagnosis tool (bootable usb) to run a set of quick tests and no error detected (except for drive self test either not supported or not passed). Please find the configuration of my laptop below:======================================W520-4270CTOCPU:                                 I7 2720 QMMEMORY:                        16GB (4GB SAMSUNG X 4)VIDEO:                   ... I tried to do some research on your error, but Microsoft has little listed for a code 2101 error. Could you possibly reboot your machine at some point and copy down the error message in its entirety? With more information, we might be able to figure out a fix.

Question: x260 Error 2101

I have a X260 with a Samsung 850 EVO SSD installed connected to the normal SATA cable. Recently, the system ran down in hibernate or sleep mode until the battery was completely drained. The next time I started it up, Iwas presented with an immediate error after the logo of "2101 Detection error on SSD(M.2)". Booting into BIOSor UEFI diagnostics doesn't show any options for diagnosing the SSD. What is odd is there is no M.2 SSD. ?Right nowI am traveling and don't have a SATA-USB cable or another drive to try, but is there any possibility this is something other than my SSD failing completely? System does not boot. Things I have tried already: Reseating the SATA cable, Resetting BIO S to default settings, "Power Cycling" the SSD. All checks in UEFI diagnostics pass.

Hi all. I have a 1 month old t450s bought directly from lenovo. Standard HDD and ram, decided to go with the HD+ IPS monitor (very good) and opted out on the 16gb ssd. I've bought a crucial balistic 8gb stick and a Transcend MTS400 128gb ssd m.2. I've installed everything and it was all working well with the eventual 2101 error on boot after resuming from sleep. Since my OS is installed on the SSD I've disabled the sleep mode, because boot time is less than 5 seconds. Anyway, a week ago I've started experiencing random freezes doing regular tasks (browsing, documents...). Yesterday the computer was frozen, I've power cycled it and I was greeted with a 0xc0000225 blue screen (something on the lines of file system not found).I've tried everything, system repair, changing the UEFI settings, reseating the ssd, running the Lenovo bios diagnostics (all green). Nothing works. Any ideas? Thanks!

Why has HP crippled the Intel HD Graphics video in the Stream Mini?  The (only) driver that will work is the one that came w/ the machine or is on the HP website.  As a result, we can't d/l a proper Intel HD Graphics video driver that includes the Intel utility that allows one to adjust the output to deal with HDMI overscan typical of many HD TVs (and, yes, that overscan can't be turned off in many of them). As a result, the edges of the display are off-screen at 1080p resolutions.  It's clear that HP is positioning this as an HTPC but, as long as we can only use the crippled display adapter drivers, we won't be able to see all of the desktop/movie/etc. C'mon HP - get us a proper Intel HD Graphics driver for the Stream Mini! JWC

As I could have predicted, not a peep from HP tech support.  They don't give a sh!t.

Hi, I just updated BIOS ver. from 1.30 to 1.37. Had no problem with it. So I've read through the history of the msata and the x220 (4286-CTO) and how the BIOS revisions were required during the middle of last year in order to get the Intel 310 and some others to work. Thinking that my little x220 with Bios revision 1.26 (i7, 8gb, 4286-CTO) would be fine, I purchased a Kingston SSDNow mS100 64GB mSATA Internal Solid State Drive SMS100S2/64G and installed it yesterday. The instal went without a hitch, but when I restarted the machine, I received a 2101: Drive detection error on hdd2 (mini sata) error.   I've seen that the 2101 error has been mentioned in relation to a couple of Sandisk msata drives on the forum, but those discussions didn't seem to go anywhere. I just got off my second call with Lenovo support (30 minutes today and 25 minutes last night), only to have them tell me that msata is not supported by my 4286-CTO.  That sounds incorrect, as others with the 4286-CTO seem to have luck with Intel and Renice. What am I doing wrong?  Is this something that another BIOS revision could cure?  At least on one of the sandisk discussions, the OP said that he/she had tested the drive in another computer without a problem, so I don't think it's a problem with the actual drives.   Somebody else mentioned that some drives are not compliant with the JEDEC standard, but that doesn't sound like an explanation to me either.  Thoughts?  Help! Best, sad x220

Answer:2101 Error: X220 with Kingston 64GB msata

I have the same issue with x220.  The mSATA I have is the Sandisk SDSA4DH-064G.  I can also add that the function of the mSATA is the same regardless of whether the mSATA is used in the mSATA slot or on an adapter card in the SATA hard drive bay (Error is 2100 rather than 2101, but the text is the same).  For this reason, I believe the Lenovo BIOS is unable to configure the mSATA drive appropriately.  I imagine that Lenovo could quickly resolve this with a new BIOS. I have tested this drive on a desktop consisting of a Asus P9X79 Deluxe + Intel 3960x running Windows 7, 64-bit.  Device is recognized by BIOS and WIndows Disk Manager.

I have just finished putting a new case together , AMD XP 3000 with Thermaltake Volcano11 cooler on a GigaByte Triton GA/7N400 Pro2 motherboard , 1 gig DDR400 memory , 2 x Maxtor7200 Serial ATA 80 gig hard drives , GeForce 256MB graphics card , Creative sound card.Everything is nicely seated and i have powered up and accessed the Bios , both HDD`s are SATA , neither shows until exiting the bios where they are mentioned under RAID setup.I do not really want to bother with a RAID setup , is this interfering with the drive detection ? does it need to be turned off ? if so how ?Also would like to know what to set the FSB Frequency at , its set to 166 MHz , options available are 100/133/166/200 , any ideas .

I've considered installing Windows XP32bit instead of Windows Vista 64bit, but when installing Windows XP you need to hit F6 key to install RAID drivers for it to detect the Sata HDDs.

This was simple with my old motherboard (ABIT AV8 3rd Eye) because I had a floppy with the required drivers on, but now I don't have any floppy... can I download the files somewhere?

I hope what I've said is clear Please ask if there are any problems understanding something

Thanks

Hi, this is my first Post, though I have use computer hope before, I have a custom built PC that includes:ASUS P5N32-SLI SE DeluxeIntel Core 2 Duo E6600 Geil GX22GB6400DC 2GB kit at 800MhzCorsair 2GB DDR2 Twin2X at 800MhzSapphire Radeon  X1950XTX 512MB GDDR4, PCI ExpressSeagate ST3200820AS 200GB SATAII/300        x2Thermaltake W0103 600W PowerWindows XP Professional x64 64-bit editionI recently bought new RAM, when I installed it there was a conflict and the BIOS became corrupted, nothing would work, I reset the BIOS and installed the RAM all was good ?..until it got to the point at which windows normally boots I got  a can?t boot fro drive press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart. It turns out that when I reset BIOS the RAID 0 I had was deleted. I Checked BIOS it was set to RAID mode, the next problem came when I attempted to access the RAID utility, it stated that no devices where detected and to press any button to continue through POST. I can?t do anything; re-formatting via windows set up, an error occurs just before it gets to the section that displays partitions and Installations, it also doesn?t recognise the RAID drivers on my floppy when setup is activating.  The Discs are Visible in BIOS but that about it, I can?t access them in any way. If anyone has any ideas or has had a similar problem you input would be appreciated .

I am running XP Pro, with Asus K8V SE M\B and currently Maxtor SATA drive.
I needed to clone my hard drive to a new one, as the old one was suspect.
I used Norton Ghost to clone my O\S and data over to the new "WD" SATA drive (which was connected via a sata-usb adapter for convenience)

When inserting the new WD drive in to the M\B, the bios wouldn't detect the drive at all (although Windows had previously). I tried all SATA connectors on the board, but no joy with detection.
The old MAXTOR drive was only 2 yrs old (80gb), and the new drive is 250gb.

I can't see any settings in the bios to detect the sata drive.

Any ideas guys?

Many Thanks

Nick

Answer:Asus K8V SE and SATA Drive detection

IIRC these old VIA sets with the VT8237 southbridge did not upport booting from SATA. I coud well be wrong and it might be that you have to install the VIA motherboard drivers for the SATA to function. Either way it is indeed a pain.

I would reinstall the old drive and make sure the SATA drivers are indeed there. Then I would reclone the new drive from there and stand back and see what explodes.

Good luck.

I currently have two IDE harddrives in my machine. However the second smaller one is failing so i brought myself a nice shiny 500gb SATA drive. However, if i plug in all the cables into the Sata Drive and then plug the other end into the Motherboard and PSU. When i turn the machine on it won't boot up. I get past the BIOS (Which has detected the new addition) and then the point where it should display the windows loading, i just get a blank screen.

If i switch the computer off and boot up again, i get the message saying "Windows did not boot up correctly" and if i pick safe mode or normal boot up, i still get the blank screen..

If i upplug the hard drive, i get normal operating computer.

Any ideas?

Answer:New Sata Drive detection and Windows Bootup

Yup, boot into Safe Mode, and download and install the SATA/RAID drivers for your particular board. Then, restart, and you should be fine.

You could do the same by unplugging the new HDD, and booting up normally, if you're not getting internet access with Safe Mode.

Hello all, I received by brand new T430s about 48 hours ago.  On the initial startup, I had a mini SATA detection error.  Not a good first impression, but anyways, that issue was supposedly resolved after the customer support rep directed me to install some updates. How can I tell if the disk is working correctly?  I've been running the computer with the task manager open, and so far my "Disk 1" (SanDisk SSD U100 16GB) has shown zero activity, even when the C: drive and CPU are operating at near 100%.  Also, the stats in the bottom right show 0 MB formatted, can that be right? Thanks for your help!

Hi,

To make sure I am understanding the issue correctly: You have a normal HDD as your C:/ drive, but you also have an SSD for additional storage, correct? If you navigate to Computer, are both drives listed? Also, where exactly are you seeing the stats of "0 MB formatted"?

Best,

I know this may not be in the right section. I refuse to post in the Mac section as I've never gotten anything useful there.

I'm looking for a firewire Connector cable. NOT an external drive bay. I work on a lot of older Macs and would love to store my OS disks on older drives to boot from. Also faster transfers from failed ibooks to new systems would be another plus. I've googled until my fingers are raw, and haven't found what I want. USB I can get by the truck load. Please only post if you can point me to where these exist, or can tell me why they don't exist.
Thanks

I have a mini pcie mSATA card that I want to use for a desktop of mine. Kingston sm200s3 60GB

I believe there are only 2 options.
1. SATA > SATA adapter > mSATA card
2. PCIe slot > PCI adapter > mSATA card.

As far as 2. goes; I have found a card that fits into a PCIe slot which has an input for the mSATA card.

I know that this is not the ideal way to hook up the card but I don't see any more options.

Which is there better way to go or what am I missing?

Answer:Mini PCIe and adapter VS. SATA

Whatever has an mSATA interface for it will work.

From here SSD Kingston 60GB SM200S3/60G mSATA p/ Ultrabook,tablet - Atera Inform?tica

its a SATA 3 device, so for optimal performance you should use something that can guarantee enough bandwith to not bottleneck it.

PCIe bandwith depends from number of lanes used (a x1 card has one lane, a x2 card has two and so on) and the PCIe revision/version of both devices. The panel on the right here gives all speeds https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PCI_Express so just multiply that by the number of lanes the card has and you will find out its bandwith. SATA 3 has 6 GB/s of theoretical max bandwith, although actual transfer speed does not go above 1 GB/s afaik.

This Mini PCIe PCI E mSATA Intel Samsung SSD SATA 3 III Adapter Card with Case | eBay

this SATA III Dual Port to mSATA X 2 w/ PCI-e Bracket | MSATA-2XS3-BKT

are examples of what you listed as 1, and stuff I would orient myself towards if my mobo had SATA 3 connectors already. Because... hey, why waste PCIe slots for that?

Hi everyone

I have a SATA hard drive in my desktop PC, which I am now getting rid of. I want to reuse the SATA drive with my new Mac Mini, and I think the only option is to use it in an external enclosure and attach it via the firewire interface.

Can anyone point me towards somewhere that will be able to supply me with the parts I need? I have tried one seller on eBay but he has been particularly vague on whether the caddy he supplies is supported!

Thanks for reading

Answer:Solved: Using a SATA hard disk from PC with Mac Mini

You can use either FireWire or USB and it is a shame that FireWire 800 enclosures are so expensive ($60-75) as it would be twice as fast as USB or FireWire 400.
Here is an enclosure made to look like a Mac accessory for $35.00 http://www.adorama.com/MACGS350SUA....ping Site&utm_campaign=Other&utm_source=gbase

Is it possible to install a MINI PCIE SATA xxGB SSD in a 3t?  I read that Lenovo is working some cool software that would allow this and treat the SSD & the Disk Drive as one.  But since I have been for years using multiple drives at home & at work, it wouldn't matter to me if they had different drive designators. I'd love to load the OS and a few programs onto the MINI PCIE SATA xxGB SSD and use the hard drive for a data drive.  I would expect it to be faster with potentially a battery improvement (another device is more power draw but less usage on the HDD.  Which way would it net out, avings or increase in power?). This probably relates to the "whitelist" which seems to be a black eye for Lenovo.  Does any PCIE card need to be on the whitelist or just the catagories listed?   Thanks,Nick

Answer:Mini SAS to SATA cable - quick question

"Connectors: Mini SAS SFF-8087 (Host) to 4 x 7 way SATA latch type connectors (target) and 1 x 8 way sideband connector".

From a little bit of googling, those sideband connectors are for extenders, LEDs, connecting to backplanes, etc. You don't have to use it, if that helps deciding if you should buy one that has that connector.

Hi guys, I'm trying to add an additional Hard Drive to my new computer. I can see that the only way to power the drive is to connect directly to the motherboard where there are 2 very small 4-pin SATA power ports. For the life in me I can't find the Lenovo Part Number for the cable here in the UK but I've found the following cable at ModDIY - There's no part number but it could be what I'm looking for: Lenovo Mini 4-Pin to SATA Power  Can anybody confirm that this is what I'm looking for and is it available anywhere in the UK? Cheers :-)

Hello,
I have a newly home built MSI AM1i motherboard and have it running fine with Windows 8.1. I am trying to expand the number of SATA ports it has (comes with only 2). The mobo has a mini-PCIe card slot.
I purchased a AsMedia 106x, 2-port, mini-PCIe card (had to use a ribbon-cable extender to get it connected).
That all appears to be fine. I struggled a bit with drivers, but eventually found a Windows 7 AsMedia 106x driver set. Loaded that, seems ok.
Problem: When I go to device mgr, it does not see the added 2-ports. When I first boot up, during the black-screen phase, it does report that the AsMedia device is loading and will actually find/name a hard drive that I attach to one of the new ports. It then almost looks like it will load windows, give the nice little blue windows 8 flag and just sits there. I can hear a drive cycle every 2-3 seconds, but nothing.
I eventually have to hit the power button to shut down. If I disconnect the drive added to the new card, it will start up. The AsMedia device looks to load during a black-screen phase, but reports no device found, and then loads Win 8 Correctly. When I get in, again, no SATA ports shown for the new device.
Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated.

Answer:Mini-PCIe SATA-card is not recognized by MSI AM1i mobo

Usually the mini PCIe slot is reserved for Wireless Nic cards.

When I try to boot my W520, I get a BIOS boot up error : "2100: Detection Error on HDD0 (Main HDD)". I am using PNY XLR8 240GB SSD. It worked fine for a month. I also have PGP installed and whole disc encrypted. I installed an update of Intel Management Engine Firmware and Intel Chipset, both are the latest from lenovo site because I was experiencing expreme slowness from my harddrive. Programs would freeze. Webpages would take forever to load..The next time I rebooted, I got the error. If I leave the SSD out for a bit, and put the SSD back in, the disk will work for some time... but on next reboot, it is again detection error.. TRIM is enabled on my system. I am not sure how the SSD died so quickly. I am back to using my HDD but I am not happy. I want a solution... is this a intel chipset issue? Intel IMEI issue? Is  the PNY SSD just a bad model? I've googled plenty and dont really see a solution. Sometimes there is a firmware update.. PNY has no firmware updates for my drive.. I don't see anybody else using PNY on their W520, but plenty of people are experiencing Error 2100 with SSD on their W520.. somethings fishy.. help please! thanks in advance !

Answer:W520: PNY XLR8 240GB SSD with error "2100: Detection Error on HDD0 (Main HDD)"

Hello,
I don't have a ThinkPad W520 or a PNY SSD, but could it be simply that the SSD is coming loose inside the ThinkPad's chassis?  I suppose this could occur if a 7mm high SSD was inserted into a 9.5mm high 2.5" drive bay with a ~2mm spacer to "pad" the unused vertical space.

I've had my T430 for about a year, and other than two Corsair RAM sticks failing my computer has been running smoothly. Last night, my computer suddenly froze up and now it won't recognize my SSD. I've tried running the SSD firmware update from the Lenovo site, but it wouldn't show my SSD under the memory devices (I'm not sure if this particular SSD is supported by the firmware update either). I don't think lenovo customer support would help in this situation, since my stock HDD runs fine and I didn't buy the SSD from them, so any help would be appreciated.

Hi, I have a month old T440s. It has the original 256GB SSD drive (didn't open\replace anything). After uninstalling some antivirus software win8 had problems booting. Hello! First post on this forum but been browsing for some time. My machine: ThinkPad S430, type-model: 3364-5HG, Win 7 x64, 500 GB HGST HDD. My problem is notably similiar to this one: https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/documents/ht082504.The problem occurs on very irregular basis, at times a couple of times a day but other times it goes weeks between the interrupts. It starts with some sort of short mechanical sound from the HDD, similar to the one when you turn the laptop of by pressing and holding the power button (only do this if I absolutely have to, it feels like choking someone with a pillow). After the sound, the screen freezes for a couple of seconds before the short bluescreen mentioned in the link occurs. The rest is as follows by the link above. Basically the only difference is the HDD brand (HGST in my S430 and Samsung in the link). After reboot (with power button during the automated reboot after bluescreen when the error code occurs), the laptop works fine.  It's getting quite annoying when this happens and also the suspension of not knowing when it will happen next is not good for my heart. What to do? Thanks in advance! Regards,Nicholas

I have an issue with a Lenovo X1 Carbon Touch Windows 8. It has a 512GB SSD. Upon turning it back on I got this error after hanging on the Lenovo logo for a good five minutes. Error: 2100: Detection error on SSD0 (M.2) The SSD is not visible anywhere not in BIOS or anywhere else. I've tried reseating it however it doesn't help. Answer:X1 Carbon - SSD Failure? Error 2100: Detection error on SSD0 (M.2)

Sorry for a 2500 GBP laptop I'd expect better really. This is the SECOND X1 Carbon I've had out of 4 to fail me with the SSD. I've lost all my data (Yes I know I should have backed it up) that I'll never be able to recover. Ultimately I've given up on the brand of Lenovo, my company who supplies exclusively Lenovo hardware to our customers are now switching to Dell as a direct result of the lack of support and poor hardware/firmware design. Just ordered 2X Dell XPS 13's as a replacement for my less than 6 month old Lenovo X1 Carbon, never thought it would come to this but the lack of support, knowledge and consitant hardware failures has left me no choice, I can't operate or do my work on an Lenovo X1 Carbon, fingers crossed the Dell will be better as it cant get any worse than Lenovo. To anyone who has Google'd the error and found this thread some cold facts; According to my resources this error can be caused if the system is not shutdown, BSOD or sudden power loss. If it doesn't resolve itself, there is a good chance it wont. Cycle the computer numrous times, let the battery run flat. Try it a few more times. Reset the BIOS, Update the BIOS. Prevention is better than cure, supposedly updating the SSD Firmware might have prevented this from happening in the first place.Lots of reports that this is an issue with BIOS and Firmware issues that result in an early death. I can confirm this having happened twice to me on different generation and model... Read more

Due to lack of HDD capacity, I replaced HDD No. 2 (Drive D:) on my Qosmio G30 with a bigger one (640GB instead of 200GB).
Booting is allright, Windows 7 starts right away. But the HDD ist not shown în the Window "Computer" (the replaced one used to be shown).

There is just Drive C: and the DVD-Drive.
Do I have to format Drive D: first? How can I check whether the HDD hardware is o.k.?

thx a lot

Hi,

You need to prepare the drive first before it can be used.

Go to Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Computer Management -> Disk Management

Initialize the second drive, then create a new Primary Partition, then format it as NTFS

I've just received my new G30-163. Every time I switch it on it asked if I'd like to set up HDD2 for mirroring. I always hit cancel, but it repeates the request with every start up. As a result, my second drive does not show up and can not be used. I have tried reinstalling the whole system from the disk provided, but I still get the same request upon completion.

I really don't want to have to go through sending the computer back, so I'm hoping you can tell me how to fix it from here.

Answer:Qosmio G30-163 asks if I'd like to set HDD2 for mirroring

I don?t know how you have changed this option but as far as I know the RAID mirroring can be set in the BIOS.
As far as I know Toshiba strongly discouraged changing the RAID configuration in the BIOS because selecting the wrong settings might destroy the data on your hard disk drives.
In some special circumstances, however, configuring the RAID in the BIOS is required, e.g. to prepare a fresh hard disk drive for RAID operation

But please take extra care when changing the RAID configuration to avoid accidental loss of data!

1. Turn on your notebook and press [ESC] until a message appears: "Check system. Then press [F1] key."

2. Press [F1] to enter the BIOS Setup.

3. Press [PGDN] twice to move to the third BIOS page.

4. Move the cursor to the Create State entries and change the states as required (you cannot change the Current State entries).

5. Press [Space] to cycle through all possible RAID scenarios possible.

6. Then move the cursor to Execute Creation.

7. A message appears at the bottom of the screen:
"Warning: If you change RAID array, you need to install OS again."

8. Press [Space].

9. Another message appears at the bottom of the screen: "Are you sure? All data on the HDD(s) will be destroyed. Do you really want to do this? If "Yes", please type the key string which is written in the manual."

10. Enter [1][2][3][4] and then [Enter].

11. Finally press [END] to exit the BIOS Setu... Read more

Hi guys. I am fairly new to computers & stuff, so bear with me. When I start my internet connection, the default browser Opera opens. Sometimes, it opens readily, but sometimes it gives me grief, when it says that due to some error, my default page (or any other page for that matter) can't open. Then, I close Opera, & start Firefox. There my page starts within no time. Similar to Opera's case is Google Chrome. In fact, unlike opera which sometimes opens & sometimes not, Chrome doesn't even open a single page anymore. This has been going on since many days. I am fed up.

P.S. I know this topic isn't strictly related to windows 7, but I would appreciate it very much if y'all help me.

Have you tried moving the computer around to different locations, cleared the browser(s) cache, tried restarting the system?

I have unsuccessfully followed option two at the url: Built-in Administrator Account - Enable or Disable
and executing the command: net user administrator /active:yes returns system error 5. Please see the screen shot attached.

The other options I have tried are also unsuccessful.

I would be glad of any guidance as to how I can deal with this error.

I have an A200-27Z

I want to remove the HDD2 cover for 2 reasons:
firstly to install a 2nd disk
secondly to investigate why PC cards will only insert halfway.

I've removed the 2 screws but the cover simply will not budge. Something else is holding it.

I'd rather not apply force or open the entire casing.

Anyone know the secret technique?

Thanks in advance

Answer:Satellite A200 - HDD2 cover - cannot remove when unscrewed

hi,

remove it with more power. There just the 2 screws. But I don't think u will able to install a second HDD because there will be no plugin on the mainboard for the HDD.

the reason for you PC card halfway issue is: this is a ExpressCard 26pin Slot and not a PCMCIA Slot. The card looks diffrent!

Hello,

I have 2 HDDs in the laptop (as Master and Slave) and would like to install XP and keep the originally installed Vista.

Vista is on the Master and tried to install XP to the Slave while the Master was disabled.
The Slave was the first and CD Rom the second.
But after a few min it says 'No HDD are connected '.

Please help me to solve this problem !

I am not a pro user, but hope will understand your help.

Thanks beforehand and Best Regards,

Answer:How to install XP to HDD2 and to keep Vista on HDD1 in Satellite A200-23W?

I think you need an SATA driver.

The SATA driver is needed because the newer notebooks series are equipped with the SATA HDD controller.
The Win XP does not contain the SATA driver and you have to install it using the external floppy disk or you could include the SATA driver using an nLite software.
This software help you to create a new XP CD including the SATA driver.

By the way; The SATA driver is a part of the Intel Matrix Storage Manger.
So check Intel page for the needed drivers.

Hi folks...been having a little problem for a couple of days so I decided the easiest was to do a restore...I used system restore, to a couple of days ago, (before I noticed the problem), but that didn't cure it, so I guess the problem was already there but just not noticed by me...Fortunately I'd made a "True Image" of my system a couple of days before, so I've restored that and all appears to be well...However, when going through the TI procedure, after telling it where I wanted the image restored to, I got a warning/error message, as per this picture... click here I carried on, and as I said, all seems to be well...But I don't understand what the indicated problem is, or the advice it gives me...I assume by "operating system disk tools" it means defrag and check disk? I haven't done a defrag yet, as defrag says it doesn't need doing... and I don't know where to find the XP version of what 98 called Scan disk.I'd welcome explanations/suggestions of what the TI message is saying the problem is, and what it's saying I should do about it!!(I really was OK with 98!!)Thanks in anticipation,Regards,Simsy

We have just upgraded to Windows 10 and every time we log in we get the CRITICALPROCESSDIED message, and the PC shuts down and restarts. Can we stop this happening, and if so, how?
Thanks, Stephen.

Answer:How to deal with the 'Critical Process Died' error

Start and stop the computer by pressing down on the Start button. Eventually it will start with different ways of fixing your computer. Just choose the one that you think will work.
Keep trying different methods till you get one that will start the computer normally.
Maybe try CMD first and type sfc /scannow and see if it finds any problems and fixes them. System restore might work if you have a restore point.

I'm about to purchase a new desktop which will mainly be used for web surfing, digital photography and occasional desktop publishing. Hi guys,

Just want to find out how to get my computer to register the HDD2 (D: drive). I followed the provided instructions from Toshiba for downgrading to XP from Vista. The sheet said to select any option other than return to out of box state or maintain current partition. So I chose the only other option available.......which was remove the partition or something like that. Now I have 2 hard drives totalling 500Gb, but only one drive registers. What is the best way to sort this out......

Appreciate the help!!!

Hi all,

This is my first post after reading a lot of posts in the past of course.

I have recently been provided with a work laptop. It's a dell e6430 running Win7 Enterprise. It has Symantec Endpoint Protection on it and some corporate backup software.I believe it is encrypted, but I am not sure.

My wish is to invest in a modular bay ( don't use optical drive ) with a SSD and to run my own Win7 on it. Completely independent from each other.

I did some research and if I understand correctly I can do two independent install, by removing the first HDD ( work ) and install the second Win7 with only the SSD in the bay. I will have my work HDD1 as boot 1 and in case I want to switch to my personal install -> reboot, F12, select SSD,etc..

I don't want to mess this up. My questions to you guys is am I missing anything?
If I boot to the SSD will my internal drive be completely left alone? No changes in logs or any other stuff that would/could upset my IT department? I am also a little frightened for the Endpoint protection, should I be?

So in Short:

c:\Windows 7 Enterprise
d:\Data Partition ( to maybe use to transfer files from HDD to SSD.
e:\Windows 7 Professional
f:\ Data Partition2 (backups and stuff )

Thanks in advance for the help.

Answer:Dual Windows 7 install independent (HDD1 work & HDD2 Personal)

You got the right idea. It is only important that you remove the HDD whilst you are installing on the SSD. Then you change the BIOS boot order to boot from the SSD. You can do that at power-on by tapping F12 or permanently in the BIOS manu by tapping F2.

The data files on the HDD you could INCLUDE into the SSD libraries when you right click on them from the SSD system.

I purchased an X1 Yoga w/ 512 GB SSD / i5 a couple months ago - loved the laptop.  After a week or so using it I started getting random blue screens of death.  Following the BSOD, the laptop sometimes reboots normally, other times displays an error during boot "2101: Detection error on SSD (M.2)."  If this error message is displayed, the laptop won't boot and has to be restarted again.  After restarting anywhere from one to five times, it returns to function normally.   After experiencing the same problem intermittently for a couple weeks, I finally called Lenovo and reported the issue and registered to return the laptop, ordered a brand new one (again X1 Yoga / 512 GB SSD, this time i7).   After waiting a couple weeks for delivery, I received the new laptop a few days and freshly installed all of my software, transferred my data over from the faulty laptop, and got back to work as of yesterday.  Everything seemed fine, but then again today I got a BSOD with the new laptop, and the same SSD error!   I can't find much information about this error via Google search, and only found one or two posts on the forum here referencing it that aren't very helpful.   It seems like this must be a relatively uncommon problem, but I've had it with two independent laptops.  I haven't installed any exotic software or made any customizations to the laptop - it seems unlikely that I am causing this problem myself.  ... I have only tried a couple mSATA SSDs in my ThinkPad X220, but each one was detected immediately without any error.

Do you know if the 500GB Samsung 850 EVO mSATA SSD worked before you used it?  Perhaps you could try it in another machine, or with an mSATA to 2.5" adapter, just to verify that it works correctly?  Although it is pretty rare to occur, you could have gotten one that is just not working.

I got a new T440s with a standard disk hard drive. My coworker gave me a Crucial SSD 512GB drive to swap in its place. I imaged the current drive on to the SSD and inserted it. Upon boot, before the boot sequence I receive the 2102 error. There is nothing in the SSD2 slot, as we didn't buy this option. The theory in my workplace (tech firm) is that I may have accidentally turned power on while swapping the drive while no drive was in the primary slot. How/where in the bios do I keep the machine from looking into this slot to boot? Currently what happens is the error is thrown and I have to hit escape to boot windows. This is a minor inconvenience, there is no loss of functionality, but when powering up on a dock or rebooting, it requires user presence. Thanks for your help.

Answer:2102: Detection error on SSD2 (M.2)

t440s might have three slots for drives - one sata III 2,5" and two m.2 slots. Usually new laptops with HDD are shipping with cache m.2 SSD which is placed in the 3rd slot. Since error 2102 is msata drive detection related I'd suggest to check out your laptop configuration and remove small SSD since you have primary SSD drive. But at first check out the function of small SSD drive - cache only or/and hibernation partition storage. And disable appropriate features for that drive.

Hello all. I've got a user who's T430s just goes to the ThinkPad logo and then after several seconds moves on but never gets to loading Windows. We just get 2100: Detection Error on HHDO. I had another T430s so I swapped drives. Now the T430s that wasn't booting boots fine. So I assumed the hard drive was going but the odd thing is that the 2nd T430s which now has the "problem drive" in it doesn't give me the 2100 error. The catch is the drive is encrypted with BitLocker and no combo of passwords or finger swipes will let us proceed. So my dilemna is I can't tell if this drive is bad because I can't see it. I ran Lenovo Bootable Diagnostics and they said they couldn't scan because it was encrypted. I put the drive in an external dock and connected it to a Windows 10 system and the drive doesn't show up under the Bitlocker to Go section. Is there any way to tell if this drive is completely done? It would be great to get data off of it but I can't seem to find a way. Everything I find seems to require a drive letter and this drive has none. Even booted into a live Ubuntu with the drive in the laptop and it wouldn't see it. Thanks all.

Answer:2100: Detection Error on HHDOcan

A lot of people have had this issue with perfectly good drives, and some have said they resolved it by going into setup, and then saving settings upon exit.   Others have said that by pressing F12, entering the boot menu and selecting the HD will let it boot as well.    Another said that by changing from SATA to Compatibility in the BIOS, restarting and then setting SATA back to AHCI will force a reset of the drive so it will boot too. Not sure if any will work for you, but you might put the drive back in the original system and give it a try (if you have not already anyway). I did see also where Amy_Lenovo posted in the same thread that a fix was found for the X250 ThinkPads, but that it required the system be sent into Lenovo.

AVAST reports that the .VHD file contains a "COMPRESSION BOMB". Now this doesn't actually tell me what this is -- but the fact that it reports something with the word BOMB in it means it can't be good.

Now as this VHD file was downloaded from the official Microsoft site I assume it HAS to be OK (or does it - I would imagine MS regularly checks its own websites - there's plenty of people out there who'd jump at a chance of attacking a MS site if they could).

I'm going to download the XP compatability mode again and have another scan.

VISTA again reports the file as CLEAN) so I think there still might be a couple of things AVAST need to fix in W7 when reading compressed or "archive" type files.

I can't post the screenshot -- once I see something with the word "BOMB" in it I immediately WIPE the entire machine. Schnell Fast, Pronto.

Cheers

Answer:Avast 4.2 - Error in detection in .VHD file

The Avast forum reports this: A decompression bomb is a file that unpacks to an enormous amount of data - thus "flooding" the unpacking engine. It's quite hard to detect such files reliably, so it's possible that it gives some false alarms ocassionally.

The entire forum is here,
Hope this helps..
