Problem with Gobi 3000 and W520

Question: Problem with Gobi 3000 and W520

Hi I am running a W520 with W7 ultimate and have a Gobi 3000 in it.. When I connect to the internet using the Gobi, it connects ok Once connected it will work for a while and then pings to gateway will just stop working and ( obvuously ) cannot access any sites. After a while it will communicate ok for a while and then drop again Access connections shows the session as staying connected I have put in a USB 3G card with the same sim in it to prove that it isnt the 3G network that is the problem and there is no problems at all with network use I have also had the Gobi 3000 changed Anyone any ideas on what would cause the issue?

Preferred Solution: Problem with Gobi 3000 and W520

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Problem with Gobi 3000 and W520

hey dsn, hard to say what could be the issue here. have you updated the drivers for the Gobi3000 ( http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/detail.page?DocID=DS015016 ) ?If you haven't could you try that? And if you're using Access Connection to connect, try uninstalling that and use W7's built-in connection wizard and see how it goes.

Could anyone tell me the difference between Gobi 2000 and Gobi 3000? Thank you

Answer:X120e Gobi 2000 v Gobi 3000

Hello,

I found a spec sheet for the Gobi 2000 here and the one for the Gobi 3000 here.  From looking between the two, it appears the newer 3000 model is ready for UMTS - AWS and EV-DO/CDMA ? 2100 MHz (standards which may not have been ratified when the 2000 was released), supports faster HSDPA speeds (14.4Mbps vs. 7.2Mbps) and is 2.5 grams lighter.

Hello everyone, I wish you all Merry Christmas! My question is quite simple. Is the Gobi 4000 compatible with W520 or not?If not why is that?I know that the Gobi 3000 is for the Lenovo W520,but it seems that it doesn't support 4G LTE via carrier's mobile network and that is why I want to buy the Gobi 4000.

Answer:Gobi 4000 Compatibility for W520 CTO

Hi, fasdf78

I did some research and found this thread that deals with the same question, albeit a different machine. Sadly, the Gobi 4000 is not compatible in any machines not listed here on Lenovo's website, due to it not being on the whitelist in your BIOS. The whitelist is a list of devices that are compatible with your machine. The Gobi 4000 is not part of the whitelist, unfortunately. Also, the antennas for 4G are different than those for 3G found in the Gobi 3000.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news,
Adam

Question: Gobi 3000 in W510

Will a Gobi 3000 work in a W510 inplace of the existing Gobi 2000?

Answer:Gobi 3000 in W510

From my experience with older machines, it will, provided only that the BIOS is white-list patched; otherwise the system will not boot up and would report "unauthorized PCI express card detected" or the like. In short, Gobi 3000 will not work unless your BIOS is patched such that it bypasses the white-list detection.

I have a question. Does anyone know if a GOBI 3000 works in a T410?  I am aware that the 1802 error may be an issue but I was wondering none the less. Thanks.

Answer:T410 able to use GOBI 3000?

Welcome to the community. Looking at this driver page: http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/detail.page?DocID=DS001273I'd presume that you could. hth. Eta: hmmm... Not sure now. The item at the link above is the activation program. The readme talks about a driver, but I don't see it on the matrix at: http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/research/hints-or-tips/detail.page?&LegacyDocID=MIGR-74582Odd... Last edit: found the referenced Gobi 3000 driver here: http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/detail.page?&LegacyDocID=MIGR-77035No mention of the T410 in the readme. Sorry if I caused confusion.

Ok so to start off my Model is T420 ok so this is my second gobi i've Might've ruined due to how sensitive the hardware is - ok so the history goes that i've instsalled windows 8 (iso provided from MS's secretive (idk if it is a secretive onedrive or not)one drive) and upgraded to 8.1 and it instaslled perfect with all drivers onboard from Lenovo System Updater Uitlity and after a fight with bluetooth not shutting down i've decied to go back to OEM system and the first thing i noticed when going to check in device manager(habbit) is Gobi 3000 not installing drivers with a code 10 so the question i ask... Is it possible that the transition from win 8 - 8.1 - back to OEM win 7 did something hardware wise to the gobi? also sorry if i spelled something wrong - that's what happens when you take 5MGx2 melatonin

Answer:Sensitive Gobi 3000? or ???

Ok so I found out that my gobi /3g module might be a windows 8/8.1 onesince the windows 7 version of the driver doesn't install the driver on windows 7 but the windows 8/8.1 version of the driver installs just fine on both windows 7 pro x64 and windows 8/8.1 pro x64and yes I've run the recovery dvd's a few times which is windows 7 pro and the gobi doesn't look to be installed when checking device manager Each of those times -I think someone might be handing out modified gobi 3000's or in short 3g module's to fit in on a certain driver made for another system instead of it's original system (it's what I think am not sure)so in short case closed.

Hi everyone, I just bought a X120e (0596CTO). It is mobile broadband upgradable, and so I searched the wireless accessories to find a suitable card. Both the GOBI 2000 and 3000 were listed as compatible. So naturally I bought the 3000 since its the newer version. When I received the machine I did all of the Windows and Lenovo updates. Then I popped the back off and put the GOBI 3000 in there but when I booted up I got an unauthorized part error and that the startup was halted. So I went to the Lenovo driver website and manually downloaded the BIOS update utility and the GOBI 2000/3000 driver utility. The BIOS update said I had the latest BIOS and the GOBI utility didn't install because no wireless card was detected. So I called tech support and they told me first off that the GOBI 3000 is not even listed only the 2000 (wrong!) and then he asks me "Are you sure this machine is broadband upgradable". Yes! It's listed as a perk right on the sales page. Plus where did he think I was shoving the card into (the RAM slot?) :-)  I'm usually nice, but this guy was irritating since he was incredibly slow and essentially accusing me of having mindlessly buying incompatible devices. When he says that there is nothing he can do for me, I tell him that I guess I'll exchange it, but that they should fix the sales webpage. He doesn't believe me! (because the PSREF website has it all listed differently). So I walk him through how it was that I came upon the GOBI... Read more

Hello @ all. I bought a new Gobi 3000 from China with FRU 60Y3257 for my W520. But i canīt turn on the Gobi with Fn+F5 Menu, WWAN Button is there - onclick nothing happens.WLAN Button works normal.WWAN driver-installation was without any troubles.  Device-Manager shows all ok - no unknown Devices. Before Gobi i had an Ericsson F5521gw inside, it worked.  Also strange thing is, the Wireless-LED is always on, also when the Hardware-Switch is off. That wasnīt so with Ericsson.Thinkpad is a W520 with Win7 Pro x64 Clean Install.Gobi Driver is 8awt11ww.Hotkey Driver is 8jvu10ww.BIOS is 1.33. No ThinkVantage Software installed.  Same mistake is on T520 - also not only a Problem with my W520... Any ideas? thx

Answer:Can not turn on Gobi 3000

Is this Gobi thing something that Lenovo offers as a pre-installed device on the W520?  I don't think so, because I can't find any reference to it in the W520 Device Driver File Matrix. It could be that the W520 is not designed to support this device, even though it physically fits into the computer. Michael

Question: Gobi 3000 problems

Hello,   I have a new W520 and my Gobi 3000 broadband modem keeps dissapearing. I get an errors about a USB device problem and in Hardware Devices it is listed with a USB error code 43. I have to power down the computer and reboot to get it to show back up. Sometimes it takes 30 minutes after booting to dissapear and other times a few hours. Very sporadic. Interestingly, it never dissapears when I am using the modem and have an active connection to AT&T. It only dissapears while I am connected via wifi. This is most confusing to see a device malfunction only when it is not in use. It is annoying that I have to shutdown and reboot to switch over to it when I lose my wifi signal. I am using an exisiting AT&T sim with a laptop connect account I have had for years. When the Gobi 3000 is connected it works very well. Any suggestions before I call Lenovo technical support? My guess is that either the drivers are immature, or I have a defective Gobi 3000.

Answer:Gobi 3000 problems

please try these 2 things
1.  in device manager, double click on the device, go to the power management tab, and UNCHECk the option for "allow the computer to turn off this device to save power"
2.  in power manager, DISABLE the option for USB selective suspend.  this option is in the advanced settings of your power profile.

try 1 first, if that doesn't work then try 2.  I'm not suggesting this is a long-term solution, i'm just trying to collect information about what the problem could be.

I have an X220 (Win7-64-bit) through work.  Recently ordered the Gobi 3000 (Sierra Wireless) embedded WWAN device.  I installed it per the instructions that came with it.  Activated using the Lenovo Mobile Broadband Activation (on Sprint). I can connect to Sprint just fine using any of the following connection methods:1) create a DIAL modem entry and use the Gobi 3000 modem interface2) native Win7 WWAN NDIS (i.e. using the Gobi 3000 device as an NDIS "Network Adapter")3) Using Lenovo Access Connections 7 Here's the problem..... it's SLOW!  With an external Sierra Wireless AirCard 402 (also on Sprint EV-DO Rev-A), I get screaming 3G speeds (2.2+ MBps down, 1.5 MBps up)....full signal 5 bars. However, with the embedded Gobi 3000 in the same location, I get barely 800kbps down and 450 kbps up.  I made sure that the driver is the latest.  What am I doing wrong?  I can't think of anything as to why this is so slow.  It's as if I'm only getting 1xRTT speeds and not EV-DO Rev-A. Activation isn't the issue..it connect... just SLOW. Stumped!

Copy the value of the 1st string Name- type the following strings:netsh mbn sh cap int="@Name"netsh mbn sh conn int="@Name"netsh mbn sh sig int="@Name" where @Name is the value you've remembered earlier (should be in quotes).

I recently purchased a T520 without the broadband option (it wasn't an option at the time).  I first tried a Gobi 2000 from an older T510 laptop but it was apparently not compatible in the T520.  Lenovo said I need the Lenovo Broadband Option with the Gobi 3000 card and they also said it would work with Verizon service.  I just installed the Gobi 3000 and the new drivers from Lenovo.  Verizon support said that there is currently no version of Verizon VZAccess manager software that will work.  Is anyone using the Gobi 3000 with Verizon service?  I suppose I could just get an external 4G device from Verizon but I really want an interal device. Thanks!

Answer:Gobi 3000 not working with Verizon

Okay, I've been working on this for over an hour.  I have the T420S and was told by Lenovo to use the Mobile Broadband software to find the ESN, except they don't make the Mobile Broadband software for the T420S yet. Originally, I went to "Access Connections" (type that in the Start Menu if you can't find it), chose the radio button "Mobile Broadband", and clicked on "Tools". When I clicked on "Mobile Broadband", and "Account Information", all I got was the IMSI and IMEI and ICCID.  There was no ESN or even MEID. So, I went to the "Setup Mobile Broadband" application (type in the Start Menu).  I changed the provider to Verizon, then hit "Start Activation".  I chose to "Activate a new wirless account" and then "Self activation".  I chose "Sign up" and let it try to initialize.  It won't initialize, but after you let it try a couple times, then go back to "Access Connections". Now when you choose "Tools" and "Mobile Broadband", then "Account information", you'll see an MEID number. That can be converted to ESN using the following converter: http://www.humpa.com/vzw/meid_to_esn.php Apparently that MEID number is also on some documentation that came with the computer, but I'm doing this for someone else, so that didn't help me too much.   Additionally, Lenovo said we could open up the computer and find the card and read the number off the card.  The way I did it is much easier than that!&nbs... I have the Sierra Gobi-3000 card in several X220 laptops.  If the computer wakes from sleep mode WWAN card is no longer visible and cannot be connected to until after a reboot.  I found the USB Controller for it and unchecked "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" under Power management to no avail. The error message in Device manager (after sleep mode) is "Windows cannot load teh device driver for this hardware because a previous instance of the device driver is still in memory. I also have this problem on my X220 laptops. I found if you disable then re-enable the device in Device Manager, it helps to bring the Gobi card back to life. It's a workaround, but not a root cause fix.Did you find out any other info for fixing this?

I ordered a Gobi 3000 for my laptop before I went abroad and found that the local carrier here (there's only one) offers EVDO service. I ordered my EVDO service but when it came to connecting using Lenovo Access Connections, the only EVDO options that are available are Sprint or Verizon. Just for the hell of it, I decided to try both and neither worked but the card is able to see the EVDO network.  The issue is that the card will not activate (even though it is activated on the local carrier's network) because it does not see a Sprint or Verizon network. If I pop in a 3G SIM card and switch the Gobi to HSDPA, it works great but 3G is expensive here which is why it isnt a great option.  The activation is purely software/firmware related on the Gobi and it's incredibly annoying to know I spent $125 for something that simply won't work (despite the assurances by the Lenovo sales team that it wasn't software-limited or locked in any way when I asked before I bought it) Anyone have any familiarity with activating the Gobi for EVDO service on providers other than Sprint or Verizon?

EV-DO never achieved enough global market penetration to become a globally standardised technology, in either an engeineering or commercial sense.

Every EV-DO  implementation was somewhat different, so its not at all suprising that you are unable to activate a Gobi 3000 card intended primarily for access to specific US providers with an EVDO provider in another market.

The Gobi 3000 card is definitely not "locked" in itself to a provider, but many EV-DO vendors would only activate a device that they had sold themselves, for purely commercial reasons.  Also, EV-DO "activation" is quite a different thing to activation in 3G networks, so even when there is a basic technology compatibility in terms of frequency bands, there may not be an ability to activate the device within the  business model of any arbitrary EVDO provider.

Cheers,

Bill

I have a T520. I decided to post this since I couldn't find anything on it anywhere when i was trying to figure it out.Sierra site has no drivers, and the lenovo driver says its an unsupported platform even though it clearly lists XP.Here's the solution, mind you I haven't tried to connect to anything yet:Go get the regular lenovo driver for sierra wireless off of the support page, run it, let it install. You can watch the sierra installer fail after that if you wish.Go into where ever you installed the driver files to, in my case C:\DRIVERS\WWANSR (Where the lenovo branded installer put the sierra installer files)Now go into the uncompressed_drivers directory (C:\DRIVERS\WWANSR\Uncompressed_Drivers)Don't run DriverInst.exe yet. It installs all the drivers, but they wont work. (Devices do not start.)Run the two .reg files to add them to the registry (LenovoPowerManagement.reg and LenovoSupportedPIDKeys.reg)Now run DriverInst.exe, and you're done! Now if someone could tell me how to increase the maximum integrated graphics from 128 mb on a t520 I'd be in heaven!

HiThe reason of issue is inappropriate fw loaded to the modem by default. It's fw for Verizon, #1 in the fw images directory structue. So, presently modem is ready to work in the CDMA/EV-DO network Verizon, only. Vodafone network needs fw #0. Most of UMTS networks need fw #6 (Generic). Modem isn't locked, just fw is a cause.Further steps for the fw changing depend on the OS installed, drivers (re)installation capabilities, external media with LiveCD etc.

I am considering purchasing the GOBI WWAN card.  Lenovo claims the card is compatible with the sprint network.  My carrier is sprint.  I called them up to enquire about how I can get my laptop on my plan, or get it on its own plan.  They said it didn't matter that I had this card.  I will still have to buy a sprint WWAN card.  What's the point in buying it if Sprint won't let me use it?  And why would Lenovo claim I can use it on the sprint network?

I'm sure that a modem is integrated since it was specifcally ordered with it and it shows up in the device manager. What I ruled out:- Hardware defect: There is a second Thinkpad E130 with the same setup, where it doesn't work either.- Service provider problem: Tried two SIM cards from two different service providers.- SIM card problem: SIM cards work in mobile 3G router. What I did:- Shut down the notebook- Put a sim card in the slot in the back of the laptop, behind the battery.- Reboot the notebook and start the Thinkvantage Access Connections software.- The sim card usually does get detected and a suitable profile is shown automatically.- Nonethless I created a profile myself. More exactly two profiles for the two service providers. The data for the APN, etc. is gathered either from the internet or from a second software I use.- I try to connect with the profile which is automatically shown and the self-created profiles.- It tries for several minutes but then quits with an error message: 'Unable to connect to network at this time due to out of coverage or Your SIM-card may not be activated. Please see Lenovo Mobile Broadband Actviation or contact your mobile operator. Do you want to sign up now?' - I tried to connect with a second software called MWconn, which ... Read more

As long as your 3G carrier supports BYOM (Bring Your Own Modem) for their service, AND it operates on a 3G band supported by the MC8355..... yes, you can.

Hi all I've been trying to activate the Gobi 3000 in my W530 for the past couple of days.  Although I have installed the drivers and I am able to see the "Mobile Broadband Connection" in network properties, it seems to be locekd to Verizon or Sprint (deponding on which OS I boot into) and I can't find anywhere to change this, even though I have a SIM card from the local telco (Telkom Mobile in South Africa).  Can someone please explain how to go about doing this?  The Gobi 2000 in my W510 was simply a few clicks, but this seems to be a whole different can of worms.

Hi!I began to notice, that there are some bugs, glitches, random freezes when using an integrated graphics card(Intel HD 3000). It happens many times a day. Sometimes the screen even turns off completely and i have to wait until it will lights up(sometimes i have to reboot the machine). It may appear even during booting, when windows logo comes up. When the screen turns on, it shows the message: "display driver stopped responding and has recovered".I have already reinstalled latest display drivers, both Intel and Nvidia many times, updated the system and so on. It didn't helped at all.Can it be a hardware problem? or this happens only because of the bad video driver ? Will be glad of any help.I have filmed what happens on the screen. You can see it here:  Lenovo W520 freezes . Thanks.

I've owned my W520 since they first came out well over a year ago. My system is equiped with the nVidia 2000M but I've run it in "Integrated" video mode due to my preference for a long battery life. About a month ago I switched to Optimus mode so I could upgrade the video drivers. During this time period I upgraded the power management driver, BIOS, etc. In other words, my system always stays current. A few days ago I decided to switch back to integrated graphics mode. I noticed the system took forever to boot into Windows 7. Once I logged into Windows, the system was extremely slow. So slow, in fact, that even the mouse was stuttering. It took nearly 10 minutes for Task Manager to open. It showed not only all 8 hyperthead cores maxed to 100% usage (in green) but they were all kernel usage (in red). I painstainkingly fired up Process Explorer to see why the svchost process was out of control. I didn't find much other than millions of context switches. I killed the process and the system became response for a second or two before returning to its very slow state again. Once svchost was killed, other processes like the touchpad software would peg the CPU. No amount of whack-a-mole worked to contain the problem. I restarted the system in Optimus mode and everything was fine. Power Manager showed that the nVidia card was locked in and no dynamic switching was taking place (as far as I can tell). I downgraded the BIOS, clean-installed the video card drivers, and downgrad... Read more

HiI recently came by a HP GOBI 2000 wwan cardThis exact model: NEW HP Gobi2000 HSUPA 2G 3G WCDMA WWAN UMTS Wi Fi Card GPS UN2420 I know this might be a long shot, but are there any workarounds to getting such a card to work in a W530?I tried pluggin it in, and whereas the first driver installs, the "Lenovo broadband activation" fails, the card shows up with a question mark in device manager, and troubleshooting it in "adapter settings" states that "there might be a problem with the driver"I know that the chipset should be supported, so what is the problem here? Driver signing? Or Bios whitelist?Any help much obliged

Hi, eyeland

Do you have a SIM card inserted in the machine? If not, this will be needed for WWAN access. Also, which version of Windows are you running, and what drivers did you download to get the card to work?

Thanks in advance,Adam

Question: W520 USB 3 problem

Good Morning,I have a new (few months)  W520 with 16gb ram an 80GB micro SSD and 500GB HD running Win7 64.I have a problem with my USB 3.0 ports. I bought a new 500GB Seagate Free Agent Go Flex Pro USB 3.0 drive. When I connect it, Windows does not see it. It does not show up anywhere, device manager, explorer, or any programs looking for it. The lights on the unit come on but show no movement. The USB drive is the portable unit with out an AC adapter not the desk top unit. When I plug it into either of the 2 USB 2.0 ports on the W520 it works and a bubble pops up saying I should connect it to a USB 3 port for increased performance. Has anyone had a similar problem or know a fix?  The USB 3 ports seem to work OK as I connect dongles, an older Seagate Go Flex 500 GB drive and my portable Neat works scanner and they all work just fine. I read something somewhere that said maybe its a power issue and turning off the power saving function may help but I couldn't find that anywhere. Please help me out if you canThanks

Answer:W520 USB 3.0 Problem

How about the W520's USB 2.0 ports? So it constantly finds the device, ejects it, finds it again, and ejects it again? Sounds like it isn't getting enough power- I'd hit Device Manager and go through all your USB 3.0 hubs on both the W510 and W520.Then, see how much power the enclosure uses when plugged into the 510 and the 520 (it might disappear and reappear a whole bunch of times). It might pull more power than the W520 can deliver, or the W510 might supply more power or be more tolerant of an overdraw than the W520.

I've had my w520 for about a year and a half now and had never experienced problems until I came over to London for a few months. Within a week of being in London my laptop stopped charging. At first, the AC adapter made a strange beeping sound (like a time bomb); that noise stopped after an hour or so. My laptop still wouldn't charge so I took it in to get repaired at a local laptop repair store. They said the problem was with the socket and not the charger, so they decided to fix the socket. I got my laptop back yesterday and it was working fine. It was charging and I had no issues. Today I came home plugged it in and it wouldn't charge. Tried a different adapter (UK outlet adapter) and that didn't work. Tried a different outlet, that didn't work. Took the battery out and tried to plug in the charger sans battery, that didn't work. Turned off laptop and turned it back on, that didn't work. I am going to take this back to the repair store tomorrow but I have spent close to $300 there and I don't want to spend that kind of money again. I am also leaving London in a week and a half to travel around Europe for 8 weeks and I need a laptop during that time, so shipping it to Lenovo doesn't make sense. I would have done that before but that would mean shipping it back to the US (I have warranty for my w520) and it seemed easier at the time to get it fixed locally. Any advice or know what the issue could be? I am thinking something could be wrong with the battery but I am not ... Read more

Answer:W520 Charging Problem

Hi, billsfan147

Do you have access to another Lenovo computer? If so, I would see if the power adapter you have works on that one. I think that the issue you are having either has to do with the battery itself or the systemboard, with the systemboard being more likely. Also, if you can find another computer to do some testing, I would also recommend seeing if the power adapters function when they are not plugged into your machine.

Best,Adam

I've had the W520 for several weeks now and the speakers worked just fine, thru reboots, shutdowns, and sleeps. Until yesterday.... After several sleep/wake cycles while traveling, the speakers now just "click" no matter what sound is played. I attached some headphones, and the sound from them is just fine.I have rebooted and tried everything I know to do with no success at fixing the problem. It appears that the speakers in the machine are broken or something. Has anyone experienced this problem, and if so fixed it?

Answer:Sound problem with W520

My speakers have never worked that well. I have to turn it up all the way to hear it. They tell me "That is just the way it is!"They had to come out and replace the Mic because it would not pick up any sound and the tech damaged the screen cover.

System:W520i7-2630QMQuadro 1000M4 x 4GB I cannot run "Crysis 2"(standard [email protected]) smoothly under my W520.Symptom: In game play, the fps (frames per second) may suddenly drop to about 2 fps for 5 to 10 second and then get back to normal 22 fps.  After my investigation, I found that the "Quadro 1000M" will activate thermal protection (throttling to minimum speed) itself once it goes into 78c~up (degree celsius).   1. Is it a normal temperature for W520? 2. Should I take my W520 to Lenovo for checking?3. Is it fixable?4. Or, if it is not fixable, can I and how can I make the "Quadro 1000M" always run in something like 80% speed for preventing the thermal protection being activated?

Hi, I'm having a problem booting my w520.  I suspected that I had bad ram (unrelated issue), so I ran the windows memory diagnostics tool.  I plugged it into my AC adapter that came with the laptop, and left it running since it takes a long time.  When I came back the laptop was on the screen asking me whether to boot from the windows boot manager, my SSD drive or my DVD drive, which I thought was weird.  I selected the windows boot manager, it gave an error (could not initialize BTI or something like that which I wish that I remembered now).  I tried to restart the laptop, but it refuses to do so.  Instead of starting up, it goes into a reset loop -- it starts up, I the keyboard LED light comes on, and then it restarts.  It does that loop every 5 seconds or so.  Nothing is displayed on the screen, and there are no beeps.  It never gets to the post screen.  The only way to get it to do anything different is to remove all RAM, in which case it does that 1 3 3 1 beep sequence.  From other threads I followed suggestions to unplug it, remove the battery and do all sorts of pressing/holding power buttons for 10-30 times.  Nothing helps. So, I'm wondering now, is there anything else I can do before I let someone repair this?  It was working just fine before I ran the memory test.  Did someone who had the same problem find a solution to this? Thanks for the advice.

Answer:Problem booting w520

You have already done a few of the things I would suggest.  You could try one memory chip at a time in one memory slot at a time. If you still have warranty now would be a good time to make a call for service. Brad

My W520 is about 20 months old and has recently been giving me some problems where it locks up and the display scrambles. All is well after a reboot and there doesn't seem to be a pattern as to when the problem will repeat. I have run diagnostics with the Lenovo Solution Center and there were no problems found. Am I correct that this is an issue with the graphics card (NVIDIA Quadro 1000M)?

It is hard to distinguish between driver problems or video memory, although in my experience, it is usually memory, which is part of the graphics unit on the motherboard. Does it happen only when you are doing anything in particular?  Does anything appear in the event log?

Hi, I purchased my W520 around 2 weeks ago from an online retailer (CompUSA). I love this machine but I've noticed that the screen has serious backlight bleeding that's gotten worse since I've gotten it (I think). There are also 2 burnt/stuck pixels and like a smudge mark that won't disappear if I try to wipe it off. I think it's behind the screen maybe. I'm thinking of calling Lenovo and asking for a screen replacement but I'm not sure if I have to send my laptop away to be fixed or they can send me the part or have a technician come and fix it? I have a 3 year Lenovo warranty that came with the computer so I'm not sure what services I'm entitled to. Your help will be appreciated. Thanks!

Do you have on-site service? If so, they'll send out a tech.Otherwise it's shipping it to depot or bringing it to an authorized repair center.

Hi Guys,  I've got a serious problem with my w520 and I can't figure out what is happening or where its coming from.Last thursday night I had 3 BSOD errors, I've had the machine for about a month now with no problems at all, there were no indications that anything out of the ordinary was wrong on the laptop, then all of a sudden it just went into BSOD. I rebooted the machine, when straight into even viewer and then it happened again. I again restarted, got to the login page and bam, third BSOD in only a few minutes.... I rebooted for a third time, started in safe mode and everything seemed fine. It was late, so I turned the laptop off, and went to bed.Next morning i booted the machine up, did a quick restore and since then everything seemed fine.. Until a moment ago when the machine just turned itself off instantly and rebooted. It didn't shutdown, turn off the programs or anything, just shutdown and rebooted. I logged in again, started the event viewer and there are four critical events to correspond with the 4 restarts. All of which say "The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. Question: w520 video problem

I have 6  w520's and all 6 have this strange problem that I can't seem to figure outWhen I clone display the external monitor looks great until you run video files either alone or in power point that have movement in them in full screen mode. (dup with 1 using 1 as source) Then I get a blocky break up that rips the video slightly When I have the external monitor (dup with 1 using 2 as the source) the problem moves to the thinkpad screen. When no ext monitor is hooked up all is fine it's driving me nuts I can't figure this one out an all 6 are doing it on what ever monitor I choose w520  4270ctoi7 2720qm CPU  8 gigs of ram4-6-12 biosnvidia  quadro 1000mset for os detection

Answer:w520 video problem

Try it with optimus off(i.e Try it with nVidia only, as with intel only display out doesn't work). I had weird issues with optimus.  Granted, I was running Windows 8 but its worth a shot.

Hello, Tonight I installed 55W heatsink and fan that I purchased from the official spare parts service from IBM, model number 04W1574. I also upgraded the CPU. I'm obviously doing something wrong in the way I'm screwing it back in because in my first few attempts there was zero contact between the Nvidia discrete GPU and the heatsink. I know that because the thermal paste I applied to the GPU didn't touch the heatsink. Third time around, I screwed in the heatsink for the GPU first (screwing in order 5, 6, 7) and then the CPU (1, 2, 3, 4). Is this the right way to do it? I notice screws 5 & 6 are somewhat spongy even when fully tightened. Is that by design? Currently have an idling temperature of 62 degrees C for the GPU running in discrete mode. With any activity it immediately shoots up to the low to mid 80s. It then emergency powers off. Yikes. CPU appears fine, idling at 45 degrees C. So I'm confident that the problem is limited to the GPU side. Can't disable the nvidia chip via bios because I'm running bitlocker and it won't boot without at least optimus. However I run discrete only because there are no Intel graphics drivers for Windows 10. Thanks,Damon

Hey everyone, I'm currently living in China and I will go back to US. pretty soon. Since I need a W520 immediately after I arrived in US , I'm planning to make a purchase online prior to my arrival.. So, the question is ..how long it will take for lenovo to get ready for my system? Does it really take 17 days ( as shown online) for them to get ready for shipment? Can I just provide a email address for the transaction since I do not have a U.S> cell phone yet?Sorry for my poor english. Thanks

I just got the slice 27+ battery for my w520.  I've got the stock 170W power supply.  When I first got the battery (today), I plugged it in and my power options showed 100% charge on primary and 37% on secondary. It also showed "Battery NOT charging" while I was running which seemed kind of odd. Now, I'm home and can experiment some.  I find now that when I have the slice 27+ installed, the w520 does not charge at all.  the charging light does not come on (this is with the system off).  My watt meters shows no current or watts.  When I take the 27+ off the w520, it will charge again. I've tried doing a bios to default and that did not help. Any thoughts? I hope I don't have to send my computer in for repair.  I have not done any bios updates on my w520 and it was from one of the early batches.  I'm always scared to do bios updates for fear of bricking my computer at an inconvenient time (like always) Thanks

Answer:W520 problem with slice 27+ battery

There is a "switch" underneath the 27++ slice. Did you turn it into green when you plug the battery in? The switch also works as a safety lock. You can't put it into a ThinkPad unless you switch it off. Also, the charging process charges the primary battery to 80% of its capacity, then it charges the slice to (maybe 80%, I cannot recall), then it comes back to charge the 20% in the primary and finishes up. ThinkPads cannot charge the two batteries simultaneously due to power source wattage constraint.

I updated a number of drivers several days ago followed by upgrading the BIOS 1.38.  All seems fine except for Bluetooth sync with my Blackberry. It will not sync using Bluetooth now and it worked perfect before these updates.  The BB software can see the phone and will sync via cable.  The phone connects to the laptop but will not connect to the Blackberry software any more.  Based on research it appears the BB software will only sync to computers with the previous Bluetooth drivers (Microsoft I think). It will not let me roll back to the previous Bluetooth driver which I suspect is because some other updates were packaged with that driver change.  When I updated there were some Thinkvantage, Intel, and various others, not to mention the BIOS change. Any suggestions on how to resolve this? John

Answer:W520 Bluetooth problem after update

Hi John,

Thanks for the  post.

As per your concern Bluetooth is not able to function properly after what you have installed. So in order to make it properly workable you need first to un-install the Bluetooth and BlackBerry software, and then re-install  the Bluetooth software from the below web link.

http://support.lenovo.com/en_SG/downloads/default.page?

Afterwards install BlackBerry software and check whether it has been synchronized or not.

Sameer

Hello,I want to ask if I do something wrong, or how to solve this problem.I have W520, with SSD in the main bay and HDD in ultrabay.I have set supervisor, power-on, hdd1 and hdd2 passwords. Also windows password.I have enrolled 4 fingerprints.I set in the fingerprint software that passwords are filled via one fingerprint.

When I powered-on the computer, I enrolled a finger, lenovo said "accpeted" and I had to put all power-on, hdd1 and hdd2 passwords manually. Since then it worked next time as is should automatically. SInce I have 4 fingerprints, I had to do this process for each finger, so 4 times, but I get it working.

But I am unable to do this on my external lenovo reader when docked. It allways says "accpeted" during boot, and then I have to write them manually. This is EXTREMELY annoying, because when docked, USB keyboard doesn't work either, and I have to go to my machine, open it, input 3 long passwords, and then close the lid fast.

Can you please help me, what to do? Where and how are fingerprints stored? I have also eSata drive and I want to set hdd password, if I will have go through every fingerprint again...
thank you.

P.S.: I had similar problem with my previous T60. On external fingerprint everything worked, but on internal sometimes it did not filled these passwords and i had to pull out and in the battery. Sadly it is not working on W520.

Answer:W520: Fingerprint logon problem

I'm having a problem with the external FPR and the power on sequence for my W520 system. The FPR is an IBM UPEK unit which was previously attached to my T42p. I can use the external FPR for all OS requests for passwords including the power on. Here's the sequence that is failing: System is in docking station, I depress the power on button, the FPR request comes on the screen, I scan my fingerprint that has been defined for power on, I get a green check mark that says matched, the screen clears, then I get a symbol that indicated no FPR and indicates that it wants to have the password manually typed on the keyboard. The priority in the BIOS (1.26) is to use the external FPR first if present, then the internal FPR. If I disconnect the external FPR and just use the internal FPR, then all goes as designed. Thoughts on this? I'm at the latest Client Security software level and the fingerprints are all registered properly. Thanks

Hello, I am trying to use Skype, which seemed to have worked just fine for a long time under Windows 7, including the FN+F6 button with the two different microphone configurations, narrow and wide. I am using Windows 8 now and found that FN+F6 is not working anymore and the setting seems to be stuck in the "narrow" microphone array setting. People only understand me if I am directly in front of the Thinkpad or a little to the right. I now found that only the right microphone seems to work at all, which I think I probably due to the narrow array setting. How can I change this in Windows 8? I have the newest Conexant driver installed, there is no SMART AUDIO software though, which I might need. Does anybody have an idea about my problem and how to change the microphone settings in Windows 8? Thanks, MCheiron

Answer:W520 Windows 8 Microphone problem

Hey there mcheiron,

The functionality of the FN keys for some changed or was lost when they updated to Windows 8, and many have found the return of that functionality with an update to the Power Manager Software.

With the microphone settings, I found them under the sound item, recording tab in the control panel. By going here what options/properties do you have to configure?

Thank You mcherion, I look forward to hearing back from you!

I just brought ThinkPad W520 with additional external SATA drive (configured with RAID 0).  Everything works fine exception a SATA adapter issue; it doesn't fit properly and can't be locked.  If I push the SATA adapter all the way in, the screw doesn't fit into hole in the back of the laptop.  Unless I pull the adapter out a little bit in order for the screw to fit into the hole, but then it is not locked and it is not properly mount.Does anyone have the same issues as me?

My (4 years old) W520 has recently had a major problem with freezing. At first, the computer would only freeze when it was moved (and by freezing I mean requiring a hard reboot). Over time, the computer started to freeze frequently even when unmoved and on a flat surface. It frequently would frequently freeze during the startup process, but I could occasionally get it to run normally for a short stretch. I restored factory settings with the Lenovo Recovery disks (the computer froze several times even when running from the disks) but that did not address the problem. I was able to run a hardware scan which revealed bad sectors in my hard drive, but suggested no other problems. I replaced the hard drive myself because my warranty was expired. The computer recognizes the hard drive, and I was able to run Lenovo Recovery, but the problem is still not resolved. The hardware scan does not show any problems since I installed the new hard drive. I've run out of ideas on what the problem could be. I was hoping someone might have some insights on what final steps I can take to try and address the problem.

Answer:W520 Freezing Problem (Windows 7)

Hi Omniwrench105,

Welcome to Lenovo Community!

Is the system freezing happening only when moving the system or it is frequently freezes at normal work?

Hope to hear back soon!

Just purchased a pair of ram (8gb) and would like to add these pair of ram on my thinkpad w520 which came with only 4gb.I've followed the instruction on the w520's manual for keyboard removal and additional links below of how to remove the cover for the ram modual in the rear of the laptop in addition to removing 2 screws that are holding the keyboard up front. I tried to push the keyboard forward and down as stated here without success.http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/MIGR-74449.html and followed the video below which is for the w510 without success of removing the keyboard.http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/MIGR-74883.html If anybody have any ideas what I need to do to remove the keyboard for the w520. thanks.

Answer:W520: problem with keyboard removal

The keyboard is in there very snugly (that's a good thing). I used a credit card at the palm rest edge of the keyboard while I was pushing forward the keyboard with my other hand. I was thus able to get the keyboard to lift up. No problem putting it back.

There is a fan problem with Lenovo W520 when running Windows 10.  Fan is not spining at it's maximum when games are played.  For example when you play World of Tanks, fan will not spin fast enough and you might encounter problems, like fps drop.  To remidy this problem you need to download and install TPFanControl.  When this application is running fan will spin at it's maximum value of 64 when needed. Lenovo development team, please work on power manager or some sort of fix for this.

Hey guys, strange problem, unit started freezing before it could go the desktop so I did a system restore and now can easily get to the desktop but first issue is that the owner always had to enter his password to enter windows, now that doesn''t happen, when booted the system will go straight to windows. Also rightlicking on the main folders such as My Pictures My Documents e.t.c doesn't work so I am guessing it's a permissions issue. I looked at the Folder Options but not seeing anything there regarding permissions, I want to advise the owner to backup all files first before I should proceed to do anything but since I can't copy and paste that won't work, any ideas please?

Answer:Lenovo W520 laptop freezing problem

I would run a hard drive diagnostic...to deal with any questions I might have regarding the fundamental capability of the hard drive before assuming it's an O/S or other problem.  Chkdsk /r is NOT a hard drive diagnostic, it's a file system tool.

I`ve just received my W520 and it`s working great except that there seems to be a problem with the vga connector. When I connect one of my monitors through vga, the colors are wrong. The brightness is low and the image has a yellow tint. For example, green appears almost as yellow. I`ve tried several displays (Dell U2311H, Dell 2005fpw, LG 42LC25R LCD TV) and different cables and the problem is still there. So I susspect that it is a problem with the connector or the driver. Has anyone experienced anything similar?

I've been waiting for my case to be assigned to someone to order my W520 replacement machine. The customer service is terrible. They mistakably told me that my laptop only had 2 effected parts! After 15 minutes of explaining to them that it is impossible for the machine to only have two effected parts, they promised to go back and take another look. I got a phone call a day after, them telling me that it was 12....yes....TWELVE effected parts, and not two. Now I'm still waiting...I'm not sure what part of Lenovo this is, but the Atlanta Georgia center is just awful, but that might be IBM's. Either way, this is no way of handling business....very dissapointed, I've been waiting for them for 11 days so far.... Will update soon.

I have noticed that my laptop while connected to AC will constantly go into an Intel power saving mode clocking the processor down to 800mhz and will rarely go faster casuing everything to slow down. The odd thing is that when I unplug it and switch to battery the processor goes back to normal speed and even uses turbo boost to increase its speed. I looked at the Power manager and have all the settings the same on max performance. The watt metter on it also is higher when using battery as well (which makes sense seeing as the processor is actually working).

Something I also noticed is that it works properly if I have my laptop plugged in when I turn it on. It just doesn't work when I plug my laptop in after it is on.

Hello all! I placed an order on 11/27/11 for a W520 system for a total of $1275.35 (Bill Me Later) with a quad core i7 and Quadro 1000M. I decided to modify my order and go with a Quardo 2000M. I called on 11/28/11 and spoke with a sales rep and she reconfigured me a system with the change to the 2000M for a total of $1437.00. But she didn't pick the correct processor, she only picked a dual core i7 and not a quad core. She re did another configuration correctly for a total of $1488.05. She said that all I had to do was call Bill Me Later and explain to them what happened and they would cancel the original order from 11/27/11. She never said that the system built in error would be charged at all and now I have all 3 charges showing up on my Bill Me Later account. BIll Me Later is of no help and said "We just provide the financing for the item and these are all approved..." I called back Lenovo and the person who I talked with said that in the worse case scenario, I'll end up with all 3 laptops getting delivered and just to not open the 2 that I don't want. He said that if I were to receive all 3, just call customer service and explain the situation and I wouldn't be charged any fees or shipping either way. Luckily my Bill Me Later account has a high enough credit line for all 3 systems to be on there otherwise I may not have been able to order what I wanted. I find this a terrible customer service experience so far that even 1 minute after a Sales Rep conf... Answer:Modify order problem for W520; now I have 3 laptops enroute!

I made an configuration error when I ordered my W520.  I noticed the error about an hour after placing it (using the web order system) and I called Lenovo (America) and sorted the problem out on the phone with a sales rep. When I got home a few weeks later, I found that  two computers had been shipped, both had been delivered.  I called Lenovo and they instructed me to send the unwanted one back.  My credit card had been billed for both. I shipped it back, and they processed a credit promptly. So...  my guess is that you just might get 3 computers delivered.  If that is the case, please inspect the labels on the outside of the box VERY CAREFULLY to make sure that you identify and keep the correct one!  The sequence in which the machines ship does not always correlate with the sequence in which you place the orders. My overall experience with Lenovo was quite positive - although it was a bit of a nuisance that two computers were shipped, I think that was a better alternative than waiting till the wrong one arrived, then shipping it back, then having them ship the correct one, etc. I had no difficulty with the process to return the surplus computer.  Folks answered the phone quickly, explained the process, I packed the surplus one up and sent it back by courier.  If I recall correctly, Lenovo even absorbed the shipping costs for returning the second computer. Michael

Hello, I'm and Engineer and have had my W520 for 1.5 years now. We had an unfortunate spill accident that led to my unit to be sent to Depot. I've been in contact with the customer service and the depot to resolve the issue, but they are just NOT helping the case. Every time you call, they give you wrong information. I have about a dozen effected parts in my system, including CPU, RAM, Mother Board, etc. And they told me that they are going to use old, used, refurbished parts to fix my machine!  Let's just say that they never told me about the Easy Serve website and being able to track my claim online. I had to dig around internet for more than an hour to find the information on my own. Being an Engineer and understanding exactly what is happening inside of these computers, I refused to have old, used refurbished parts to be put in my system (more than a Dozen of them!), a machine that is worth $2500. After calling 5 times, I was informed that they seem to have escalated my case to a man named Dan from Lenovo. However, it seems that they are not willing to put me in contact with him and have told me to wait until after Monday!  This system is everything to my work and this lack of knowledge and sufficient information, and helplessness on Lenovo's behalf  is just not helping. I'm not sure what they are going to do, but the only thing I can do is hope they will call me on this. These reviews are great way for us customers to know what typ... Read more

Answer:W520 Spill problem, Customer Service is NOT helpful

I've been waiting for my case to be assigned to someone to order my replacement machine. Now I'm still waiting...I'm not sure what part of Lenovo this is, but the Atlanta Georgia center is just awful, by that might be IBM's. Either way, this is no way of handling business....very dissapointed. Will update soon.

Hi, when I connect an external monitor (1920*1080, 16:9) to my W520 via VGA (using extended desktop), the NVIDIA control panel reports a "native" resolution of only 1440*900 for that monitor (which is by the way also the wrong aspect ratio). When I manually change the resolution to 1920*1080, the outputs looks jolted, i.e., the picture is squeezed vertically. Besides, the picture is cropped on the left and right hand side. How do I fix this? I'm using driver version 8.17.12.7658 for the NVIDIA Quadro 2000M and version 8.15.10.2538 for the Intel graphics (the latest versions from the Lenovo download page). By the way: Using the VGA output of my old R61i, everything is fine, so it's probably not the monitor's fault.  Regards,Sven

I've just bought LastPass premium with the FPReader authentification, and it looks that the one gives the oportunity to use FPReader authentification, but when opening the windows for finger enrolling it doesn't see the finger at all (the led is off). What could it be?

Answer:Finger Print Readre problem on W520 Windows 10

Dear adalbert,

Welcome in lenovo community,

Lenovo did not test or release all the compatible windows 10 drivers for the W520 yet,
So my advice to you is to go back to the previous windows and check the fingerprint function then.

Joseph

my W520 right speaker sound really bad when playing high-pitched sounds (e.g. Windows-Sounds, Windows-Speaker-Test-Sound).check out the video http://youtu.be/saR-9jlens8?hd=1 the left speaker sounds pretty good, so I guess the mainboard/driver shouldn't be a problem.is there a way to get a replacement speaker?does anybody has or had a similar problem?

Answer:W520: left speaker problem (high-pitched sounds)

Hi stifuYes, just use the Windows test on the last few seconds to prove the tech that the right speaker is faulty and they will replace it for you. I have met the same problem before and I have the speaker replaced once.

Have a nice day!

Hi, I was wondering if anybody has problems with Windows Live Messenger on the W520? Using Skype, video quality and audio is great, frame rates are high and resolution is good, the upload and download is around 1 Mbps. The Nvidia card is off, just running the Intel HD card. Using WLM, resolution is good, but the frame rate is around 1 frame per second! the upload/download traffic is therefore only around 100 kbps. The Nvidia card is off as well.  All drivers are new and Skype and WLM are in their newest versions. Does anybody experience the same problem and do you have any kind of solution for this, except using Skype only  Thanks, MCheiron

Hello everybody My wife got a 3000 V100 (specs below). She didn't like the performance of Vista. I installed XP pro (the one i had, not the downgrade disk that leonovo sells; downloaded all drivers and installed them). Then i noticed my laptop (3000 N100; specs given below) which also runs XP pro, is considerably faster: I read a core 2 duo should be about 30% faster than a core duo, but mine (n100) boots in about 1 or 2 minutes and hers (v100) in 4 or 5 minutes (everything else is as slow). Is it possible that one of v100 cores doesn't work, perhaps because I missed installing a driver? Thanks in advance. --Jeff 3000 V100 spec:T5200(1.6GHz), 1GB RAM, 120GB 5400rpm HD, 12.1in 1280x800 LCD, Intel 950, CDRW/DVDRW, Intel 802.11abg wireless, Bluetooth/Modem, 10/100 Ethernet, touch pad, IEEE 1394, Fingerprint reader, Camera, 3c Li-Ion batt, WinVista Home Premium 3000 N100 spec: T2300(1.66GHz), 512MB RAM, 80GB 5400rpm HD, 14.1in 1280x800 LCD, Intel 950, CDRW/DVDRW, Intel 802.11abg wireless, Bluetooth/Modem, 10/100 Ethernet, Fingerprint reader, 6c Li-Ion batt, WinXP Pro

Question: T400 GOBI

Hi Everyone, I have a T400 (2765-T2U). As of now I have the Ericsson AT&T broadband card installed. I would like to have the GOBI card so I can use Sprint EVDO in the states, and an HSDPA carrier while in Europe.  Does anyone know the part number for the T400 GOBI card? If I install the card will the connection manager allow me to choose Sprint in the states, or say Vodaphone while in Europe? Thanks! Matt

Answer:Qualcomm Gobi 1000 and GPS

You need to install Thinkvantage GPS software, but without phone provider, it will work like a stand-alone GPS (outside with line-of-sight to satellites).

Hi, I have just purchased a refurbished X201t that has a Gobi 2000 WWAN installed. How do I set this up?  I assume that I need to install a SIM card but I can't find any information on how to do so. Thanks  Simon.

Answer:Setting up Gobi on X201t

If your X201 is WWAN ready there should be a slot for the SIM card behind the battery. Also there should be a slot for the WWAN adapter which i believe should be under the keyboad, but not 100% for sure for the X201. If the computer is WWAN ready there should be two wires for the antenna by the slot for the adapter. Then you need to download and install the driver and that's basically it. The Thinkpads usually got a whitelist in BIOS for these kind of cards so if you buy a Gobi 2000 WWAN card from Lenovo should work fine, but buy it somewhere else might give you a error that says "Unauthorized hardware" during post. I'm not sure if this is the case here, but if you install the card i guess you will find out If you have some problems with these steps please explain what part where you have some questions like finding the SIM slot, installing the card, installing the drivers and so on. -gan

I am poised to purchase an X201 any minute now...but I need some info before I do...

I am currently using a Verizon Wireless USB "air card" (VZAccess) for my mobile/anytime/everywhere internet connection.  I was going to upgrade my device to the new LTE 4G card and extend my plan for another 2 years for wireless through Verizon.  However, I am just now learning about GOBI - I was NOT going to include that option in my new ThinkPad, but now I'm wondering if I should.  I would LOVE not having to mess with that card sticking out of the USB port all the time, so the GOBI option sounds appealing.

My question is this:  the only GOBI option is 2000 3G.  So what is actually the better option - and what are the advantages...Verizon 4G USB modem with 4G monthly service plan (now actually cheaper than previous 3G plan), or the integrated GOBI 3G.  If I am completely confused about the whole 3G/4G thing, will some please explain?  I am of the mind that 4G is better, that the plan is better, but the actual card is a nuisance...that GOBI would be more convenient, but then is an older, almost outdated technology... ??

Any help would be appreciated!  Thank you.

Lisa

Answer:Help, please! Verizon LTE 4G USB vs GOBI 2000 3G

Hello mate, First you have to know what the cariers call 4G is not really 4G. LTE is really a pre 4G.The Gobi 2000 support HSDPA+ who is 3.5G. HSDPA+ is the most commun connection for the moment. LTE is faster but the network just start to be deployed means there is a lot of black spots. In theses blackspots you will connect in HSDPA+.I think you will have at least 2 years before the LTE network will be deployed.Normally the real 4G will be finalized soon. The race is beetween WIMAX 2 and LTE Advanced. Normally LTE Advanced should be compatible with LTE but really nobody knows. For my point of view, for the moment, it's a bit risky to change everything to gain a bit of speed. This thing remembers me the war beetween HDDVD and BluRay. And at the end people who bought HDDVD have now a useless thing you can't use anymore. For my usage the Gobi 2000 is perfect because is just a second connection when i'm away. The speed is far enough to browse the net and check the mail. Even for download is not too bad but anyway in Australia cost so much money for a plan with a couple of Gigs, I try to don't download too much.

Hi, Anybody have a chance to activate the Gobi 2000 with Sprint, I read somewhere it is possible but no instruction. I can only see AT&T and Verizon for my options. Thanks

Answer:W510 with Gobi 2000

I'm having the exact same problem activating the GOBI 2000 with Sprint.  I'm running Win 7 x64.  The drivers from Lenovo are installed as well as Sprint Smartview for "embedded devices".  I've given sprint the MEID number from tools -> mobile info within smartview and I'm having no luck.  The accepted the number but still no go.  I found on the sprint site where to user the PRL_Upload utility for GOBI 1000 and 2000 devices but it just immediately fails when trying to connect to the device.  Have you had any luck with this??  Any info would be greatly appreciated.

I just placed an order a T410 with Mobile Broadband Gobi 2000 GPS 3G.I selected Open SIM card for Verizon May I ask if this card support GSM (e.g. able to use GPRS, EDGE and 3G)? Is it unlock and could be use with any GSM carriers around the globe? (I am frequent traveller and have to switch the mobile number quite often) Thanks for the information, I appreciated!James [Update]: I just called the Technical support to ask about this and the technician told me that, I cannot use other SIM card than Verizon one. This means I have to stick with Verizon Open SIM forever???? Is it true???

Answer:Gobi 2000 GPS 3G is unlocked and is GSM?

well...the answer to both of your questions is YES.Verizon tech support (and it's NOT the first time i encounter it...) knows nothing regarding the Gobi.
