Preferred Solution: Is my PC fine?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Is my PC fine?

Is this a pre-built computer or did you build it yourself? If this is a pre-built computer, could you please provide the make and model information.
The information you provided does not give us enough information to determine what you can / should do. I can see that you have an Intel i3-3220 CPU running at 3.3GHz and a single stick of 4GB Ram running @ 1.5V, and possibly an Asrock motherboard, but need more specifications.
Also, what do you plan on doing with the computer (gaming, web browsing, reports, video editing, etc)?

hey guys
so i finally decided to install win7 x86 - everything went well - put all the standard stuff on there etc - i rebooted many times because of installations and updates
on my last reboot it just got stock in the bios screen (verifying dmi pool data..success! etc)
so i rebooted, same thing, took the disc out, same thing - turned off boot devices same thing
tried to use window's useless repair tools (whatever happened to repair install?) which didn't help - so i decided to format and reinstall - then it says it was unable to do that (partition error or something)

the annoying this that this EXACT..i mean EXACT same thing happened when i installed vista sp1 from scratch - this happened - and to fix it i had to leave my pc open overnight with the hard drive cables all the morning with my fingers crossed i tried the installation again - and it worked.

my d: always disappears (single hard disk sata 233gig (250)) - sometimes it'll vanish from my computer and stuff - but this can't be the problem because the d: is a single drive on its own - my c: is a25gig partition from my e: - so it's completely unrelated.

does it matter how i replug the sata cables (2 of them) into the mother board? - they're both being recognised anyway

this is really annoying though - mostly because there isn't really an explanation - and because this random stuff always happens to my pc! - is it my hard drive because that's the only thing that would half- make sense :-/

now ... Read more

Answer:installs fine, runs fine, reboots..not fine

Did you delete/recreate the partition? If you haven't then do this first and try re-installing Win 7. I wouldn't recommend removing the watermark as that can have unpredictable results.

I have searched for this problem and can't find it anywhere. Every few minutes my IBM Access Connections keeps shutting down, then restarting all by itself. I usually don't have to do anything to restart it, but once in a while it takes too long to restart, so I reconnect manually. I don't know if it makes any difference, but it didn't happen until I downloaded Google Chrome. I've installed Service Pack 3, but no change. And while I'm at it, my laptop will no longer restart when I click "restart". It just powers off. Anyhelp would be appreciated. My computer model:R51 2883-ARU Message Edited by jnwest on 09-07-2008 12:52 PMMessage Edited by jnwest on 09-07-2008 12:52 PMMessage Edited by jnwest on 09-07-2008 12:53 PM

Hello, that´s a strange behavoir. It seems that google chrome had problems with AC and interferred with it.I would suggest uninstall and then install google chrome. See if AC is functioning as designed when google is uninstalled. Or try to download the newest verson of AC from driver page of Lenovo.Look at the link supports&downloads, on the very top of this page! greetsAndreas

Hi, I am having a mojor headache with a Toshiba Satellite Pro A120. The screen has started switching to blackout at random times and is happening more and more. It doesn't matter whether W
Jayindows has loaded or if I enter the bios,or boot from CD,or leave it sat waiting for me to select a boot device. It more often than not goes black but you can still see what should be on the screen, it's just not lit at all to see clearly. The laptop itself is still working fine as it works on an external monitor and makes system beeps, cd spins up etc.
Have tried the following:
Adjusting various settings in the graphics properties and within the bios but makes no difference.
It also switches back on if I press FN + F5 to swap monitors but goes off again after a few seconds.
It's not overheating as it's been stood all night and still happens sometime during boot when stone cold.
I've tried booting with / without the battery - no difference.
I've tried booting without the HDD - no difference.
I've tried removing the battery, pressing power for 60 seconds, then add battery, power and boot up again - no difference.
I would have sworn it was the inverter but it does the same thing with an inverter I know works! don't think it can be graphics as it works on an external monitor and doesn't go off.
I'm out of ideas and seeking a genius to sort this for me please!!!

Answer:Satellite Pro A120 - Black Screen - Fine on External Monitor - LCD fine

Apologies, the bit that says " *It doesn't matter whether W*
*Jayindows has loaded*"

Should actuall read: " *It doesn't matter whether Windows has loaded*"

My laptop keyboard is knacked too!

I recently purchased a new laptop from PC World which has Windows 8 on (recently upgraded myself to 8.1) and was set up in store by their 'Knowhow' team.
My laptop connects to the router fine (this is confirmed as I can access the laptop on other devices such as my old laptop or my smart TV) however there is either no internet access, or I have access for 2-3 minutes and then no further access.
If I connect to the router via an ethernet cable there are no issues at all and I have connected to my university wireless routers and routers at a friends house with no issues.
There are no issues when accessing the internet through the wireless with the other devices in my home so I'm assuming the issue lies with the wireless link between my laptop and router however after searching forums for this type of issue I haven't been able to fix the issue. I have already tried a few things however I'm happy to do these again and post the results if needed to cross fixes off the list.
If it helps, my laptop is a Samsung 5 series NP540U3C-AO2UK and the router is NetGear, provided by Virgin Media who also provide our internet.
Thanks in advance!

Have major graphics display issues with Firefox & IE! Chrome is the only browser I can view web pages & buttons, icons, stationary etc. perfectly. All browsers have been updated. I can hardly use Firefox or IE.
I prefer firefox but the buttons, email stationary icon links & other web page graphics are invisible. My email stationary tools are invisible. When I mouse over the graphic links (icons) I see the ALT tags & the links do work even though invisible!

For example, the font color chart shows no colors, only black outlined boxes, like a grid with no colors to select. Can't see any the Emoticons, Bold, no tools what so ever.
The graphics are lacking. Very bare bones.
A picture can explain it best.
The Chrome browser is the only browser I can use without any issues.

I took out my Nvidea graphics card a year ago when it went bad & am using my
inbuilt SiS graphics. I've tried everything with no success.
I'm wanting to check my webpage & landing pages in different browsers but I can't until I can resolve this.

Appreciate any help in this matter!!!

I've been doing some online gaming (world of warcraft), and I kept getting these Error#131 issues. This would cause the game files to become corrupted and then I would have to repair, or reinstall. The WoW tech site says that chronic error #131 messages are either a Hard drive, Ram, or Motherboard issue.

Running the Windows Vista memory diagnostic tool has turned up some odd results, the initial test with a 1gb stick in slot #1 and a 1gb stick in slot #2 came back with errors. I then removed the ram from slot 2 and ran the test on slot 1 with 1 stick of ram.... no errors. I did the same with the other stick in slot errors. this lead me to believe that it was slot#2 giving me the issue so I moved the ram from slot 2 to slot 3, thus having 1gb of ram in slot 1 and 1gb of ram in slot 3. After a little while......error#131 appeared.

So I then tested both sticks in slots 1 and 3 together and came back with ram errors, I then tested both sticks in slot #1, and then again in slot #2 and both tests came back fine. Any ideas on what this issue could be? I know both sticks are the same brand, speed, totally identical.

Answer:Ram Works fine in single sticks, not working fine together :P

Linksys PCI G Wireless Adapter has stopped working after a semester at college. The network was wired there, so my desktop was plugged into it for 3 months, but the adapter itself was safe.
It worked before I left for college, and I just got back, set everything up again, and it is detected in device manager, I enabled, disabled, reinstalled drivers after removing the old ones, and tried installing and uninstalling it.

When at college, because this is a Vista machine, I had to update my drivers that manage my wired connection, because they were not working when I first got to college. I was wondering if this may be the cause of the problem.

Answer:Wireless fine, wired fine, back to wireless, not fine.

can we see a device manager and also an xirrus screen shot
Run Xirrus Wi-Fi Inspector
Download and install
If you cannot access the internet with this PC, then you will need to copy the program across to the faulty PC
Save the file to a USB flash drive or other removable media. Plug it into the working computer with internet access and copy the file and paste here.
Direct link to the program is here

{If the above link does not work heres another link,77196-order,4/download.html}

Then run and install the program - on a wireless enabled PC/Laptop
if you get an error - You need NET Framework installed for the WiFi Inspector to function.

Run the program

A user guide is available here

post a screen shot of the program running - if there are a lot of networks showing can you click on "networks" top lefthand area - so we can see all the network information, and also post which network "Adapter Name" (1st column) is yours on the list

To post a screen shot of the active window, hold the Alt key and press the PrtScn key. Open the Windows PAINT application and Paste the screen shot. You can then use PAINT to trim to suit, and ... Read more

Ok, We just updated our modem from a Motorola SBG900 to a SBG6580.

Speedtests are substantially better.

We have 2 laptops, 2 desktops, 2 Xboxs, and a PS3 all running on the network. All of them are running amazing...except for (of course) my desktop.

I can run speedtest on my desktop and get around 12Mb, but when I try to browse the internet, websites take stoopid long to load and sometimes won't even load. But to make things even more strange, when I stream a video from youtube or something, it will take years for the video to start streaming, but once it does, it flies.

Talked to Motorola and all they could say, is if you have an internet connection, its fine.

No settings were changed at all from the time we turned off the old modem to the time we activated the new one.

Virus scan checks out. Tried on both Wireless and Wired. All drivers updated. Was about to format my computer but I lost my damn Win7 install disc. >< Please Save Me.

Answer:Speedtest fine, browsing speed not so fine.

Briefly, I've been using my monitor instead of the laptop screen for over a year now. Everything works fine. Suddenly yesterday the monitor went black! It's actually still functioning on some level but doesn't keep the display. I was doing something on the internet, possibly saving a password in RoboForm, maybe just wandering. There are no error codes or indicators.

When I reboot, having previously changed the setting to dual - laptop & monitor, it briefly flashes the Vaio splash screen, then black, then briefly flashes the Windows splash screen. Then black. The laptop screen is fine. I've tried both 'Single Display - Monitor' and 'dual display' - Laptop as Primary; 'dual display' - Monitor as Primary, and in none does the monitor work - laptop screen always works.

If I unplug the VGA output from the laptop, then plug it back in, the monitor briefly (maybe 1-2 seconds) shows the desktop images perfectly! Then black! It seems that everything is actually working just not properly! It's making me crazy. I did try downloading the most current graphics driver from Intel...nothing. The monitor continues to show a green light (indicating that it is receiving a signal). The audio (plugged from the monitor into the front of the laptop by a separate plug) continues to play thru the monitor.

To Recap: Display on 'Monitor only' has worked just fine for a year. Now it won't show any image... Read more

Answer:Laptop fine, 2nd monitor fine - but no display!

Bump.....still hoping....
P.S. I DO have a signal! Just no display on monitor.

I am having this problem on my other computer. I just installed 2 cold cathodes into the case then wired it all back up with the cathodes connected into the power supply and now windows wont boot for me. The motherboard settings and bios load fine... then the normal windows XP loading screen comes up and loads then as soon as it finishes the screen goes all black and my monitor (flatscreen LCD) says that it is not reciving a signal... So I boot it in safe mode and it boots fine. I have already reinstalled my VGA drivers and still nothing. I have been attempting to fix this for a little over 3 hours now and still nothing. HELP PLEASE!

Answer:Bios Loads fine, Windows loads then black screen, boots fine in safe

Disconnect the cathodes and the try to boot. If it works then your power supply isnt putting out enough juice for all the extras.

Bootup proceeds to the phase with the little green bar moving across it's path repeating. It repeats several times, then freezes in place for good.

Answer:startup repair says all is fine; boot in safe mode w/ nworkg is fine. but can't startup

Try setting up a clean boot in safe mode, shows how to in Vista here.
Remember to Hide all Microsoft services in Services. Reboot as normal to see if you can log in. Re-enable half the service to see if still ok. Process of elimination but all the info is in the link.

I have a friend who's computer works great on my network and my computer works great on his network, but when his computer is hooked to his network internet connectivity is slow and intermittantly fails.

Both computers are were connected directly to the router via the same ethernet cable, both units are laptops.

Again, vista believes it is connected to the internet, and it is, but the connection is just horrible. At my house it works beautifully.

His computer that is not connecting:
HP pavilion dv6748us.
procesor is AMD turion64x2
OS VISTA Home Premium 32bit
2 gb RAM

My laptop that worked on his connection is:
old SONY with windows XP pro
1gb RAM

Already have done the following:
Reset internet explorer 7
used the MSCONFIG console to turn off ALL startup processes just in case.
Ran a quick scan with superantispyware

I would have tried a differant browser but I could not download it, took it to my house so I could use a flash drive or let it sit forever and download and to my amazement there was no connectivity issues whatsoever.

Answer:Solved: Computer functioning fine, network functioning fine, two dont work together.

Question: Is my PSU fine?

PSU: Xclio "Goodpower" 500W
LED Indicator Light Key: Orange = Stand by / Green = Power ON

Yesterday, my computer emitted a semi-loud *crack* in the area of the main power connector when I tried to restart it when the motherboard was directly connected to the computer case (I was stupid and didn't install the standoffs), then died (no smoke came out). When I try to reboot, every fan in the computer would begin to spin, then immediately die out a second later (fans don't halt to a stop at once, they just spin until their momentum is spent). The LED indicator lights on the back of the PSU would light orange on the initial plug in of the power cord, then would flash green then go back to orange in relation to the fans powering up when I press the power button of the computer. Also, after I press the power button the first time, the power button will not work again until I remove the power cord, then reconnect it to the PSU after the LED goes out. Also, there is no burning smell in the PSU.

Is my PSU in working condition?

Extra questions (somewhat off topic):
1) Can a fried motherboard fry its connected components?
2) If the fan of an 8600GT graphics card is working, does it mean that the graphics card is fine?
3) Is it an ABSOLUTE MUST to remove/reapply thermal paste every time you break the seal?

Answer:Is my PSU fine?

i had a problem like this. I thought it was my power supply, i didnt see any smoke, had no burn marks, but same problem, turn on for a split second. i realized it was my motherboard tho... so, one way to check, take it to ur local comp/fixer-upper store and have em test the mobo and the psu.

Or should I remove the battery first if I am going to use all day? Please answer. Thanks

Answer:Hi I am new here. I am going to ask if it is fine ...

If you're going to use it plugged in for a long time, some like to remove the battery. If it's a short time, it won't hurt. The bad thing about using it without a battery is, if you lose power, you lose whatever isn't saved.

Good Afternoon,

In late December you kind folks helped my wife and I with a serious computer issue. Everything is "ok", I still get a command asking me what I want to open the program with. I am trying to take a screen shot of the warning so that people can understand what I'm talking about. Never get the question when I run a program as an administrator.

The real issue that is worrying me is that my laptop is no longer reading my cdrom drive. Didn't realize that until today when I tried to burn a driver for my wireless usb adapter and realized that my cd rom is not even on the computer menu. I followed the directions about Defogger and reinstalled the program, which runs but when I select the option to turn my cdrom drive back on, I get an error.

Below are links to my previous forum posts last month:

Can't seem to paste the snipped screen shot, but I saved it so someone can have it that needs it.

Answer:Everything was fine, now I have no cd/dvd rom

Download, and run Restore Missing CD Drive patchDouble click on to unzip it.Right click on cdgone.reg, click Merge.Accept registry merge.Restart computer.or...4. Confirm.Restart Windows. They'll be automatically reinstalled.

I'm stumped on this one. I'm having some weird problems trying to access sites using SSL from IE7 and IE8beta2, but only with the 32 bit version. I'm running Vista Ultimate 64, and if I hit any https site using firefox or the 64-bit version of IE, they work just fine. If I use the 32-bit IE, it doesn't display at all. Here is an example site (standard newegg login)

Running the 32-bit IE with no addons disabled (via: C:\program files (x86)\internet explorer\iexplore -extoff) yields the same results. I have ran through all the things I can think of (enabling ssl, in advanced internet options, etc.).

Here's where it gets weird.

I decided to use MS Network Monitor 3.2 (free download on the ms site) to log the packets being passed around to try and get more info.

With both browers (working and non-working), I get a packet like this (which looks normal to me):

188 18.976085 {SSL:5, TCP:4, IPv4:3} <ip addresses> SSL SSL: Change Cipher Spec. Encrypted Handshake Message.

Shortly following this packet, whenever I hit an SSL site using 32-bit IE, I always end with an entry like:

192 19.166294 {TCP:4, IPv4:3} <ip addresses> TCP TCP:[Segment Lost]Flags=...A...., SrcPort=49326, DstPort=HTTPS(443), PayloadLen=0, Seq=2913361907, Ack=2285544626, Win=17377 (scale factor 0x0) = 17377

My problem , existing now for a few weeks.Guy has a cd writer, burned many discs in the past . But suddenly only the CD-RW are able to be read, ( he used InCd ) the cd-r now , when trying to retrieve data are not being read. The cd-r are not even showing up when he opens My computer. ( all disks going back many months were successful , up to the present! These disks are those which are months old, not new ones.Even discs given free with mags are not shown, only cd-rw ???Have used a ?lens cleaner?!Their machine runs XP and when bought was top of the range . They haven't got round to asking about SP2 yet. There would have been no installation of new software or upgrades since I convinced them to allow me to reformat and clean install xp over 12 months ago. The owners ( more money than sense) only use the computer to play 0nline Bridge or store hundreds of photos.Removed /unplugged cd drives, rebooted, switched off connected cd drives , switched on ... but no better. So to recap , will only read cd-rw not cd-r , but nothing wrong with discs.Have run a cleanerTIA

Answer:CD-RW are fine but not CD-R

Personally I wouldn't spend any more time with it, go here click here and get a new one for under £20.

Answer:Does this log look fine?

Hi and welcome to Bleeping Computer! My name is Sam and I will be helping you.
I apologize for the delay getting to your log, the helpers here are very busy.

A couple things that I notice. First you have no antivirus installed. That's bad.
Then there are a few lines that could be cleaned up, but no signs of malware.

Are you having problems?

Question: Will I be fine?

Hello guys, forgive me for a what may appear to be a common sense question.

I just installed Windows 7 Premium (full) on my new custom computer build but paranoia has now gotten the best of me.

My question is: If I were to install a new main drive (ie SSD) would I have a problems doing a fresh install again? or will I need a new product key? I'm assuming I'll be fine if I'm not upgrading something major? (ie motherboard)

Answer:Will I be fine?

Hi there jeffwindows7 welcome to the forums yes I would imagine that should all be fine. the only issue you might have, is you may need to just give Microsoft a call to activate it.

On Friday nights I usually attend a gaming club that is hosted at my local college where a bunch of people gather to play video games. I take my ASUS G53SW laptop and play games on steam. My problem is that my wireless connection is so slow and I am limited to single player only games, I get bored after awhile and would rather play some online games. While trying to update a patch for League of Legends I was getting a whopping 5-7 Kbps download rate. If I try playing an FPS such as Counter strike, or left 4 dead I can join the game fine, but then my ping skyrockets into the 500+ range. Everyone around me playing online on consoles and even other laptops are playing online games the entire time without any trouble. I updated all my wireless drivers and it didn't help any. Anyone know what might be happening?

Hello - I ordered a new system from MESH a few weeks ago, got a delivery date for 10/02/04.I was contacted on 05/02/04 and informed that they (Mesh) had been let down by the supplier of my monitor of choice and none would be available until 17/02/04. I was offered a free upgrade? from an IIyama prolite 481S to a Sharp LL-T19D1-B.I said I would wait for the IIyama. This morning 12/02/04 the whole system arrived with a Sharp monitor, luckily I was there to receive it. The question is, does anyone have any experience of either of these monitors, I would like to stay with the IIyama, but could be persuaded to keep the Sharp if any positive feedback turns up.Having dealt with Multivision and Panrix in another life the words of "suppliers" and "let down" struck a spooky note.

had my cpu usage up to 100% for long intervals since few months. checked out the temprature using speed fan , as it showed cpu temp 122 . i have pentium 4 @3ghz . is it fine or should i have to apply cooling paste??

Answer:Is my processor fine?

122 degrees Fahrenheit isn't bad and I wouldn't worry about that. But if its 122 Celsius then you got yourself a miracle computer. (and a very serious thermal problem, although it probably would be dead long before that)
Check task manager to see what is using the CPU.

We kinda need more info from you on the network cards, and network setup. Have you tried rebooting the router then the pc's?

When you get a chance could you fill in the systems specs (in the lower left corners of your posts) so that we know what kind of hardware you have

Hi there
It's interesting reading how many people on this Forum just seem to HATE W8 basically because it's missing a start menu and has a somewhat "Kiddy" type of interface (compare with the Kiddy Menu on AOL around 1996 -- screenshot enclosed). It actually is very simple to almost replicate W7 behaviour and after initial boot you don't have to look at the "Start UI" again.

However that's not the point -- Most W7 users are (in my experience) typical "Classical desktop / laptop" type users either intensive gaming or doing "classical Windows applications" which operate best in multi window re-sizeable mode with a mouse. Touch here isn't an issue.

However there are ALL sorts of new devices coming out these days and it's going to be essential to Sync applications / data etc with ALL these devices -- for example as in IE11 (Yes version 11) as seen in the recently Leaked version of Windows 8 "Blue". Touch enabled devices need to be handled and I rather like the idea of using say a Windows 8 Phone to be able to either stream a TV program from the Internet to my PC or even use the Phone as a remote controller for a smart TV,

Windows 8 has to link to all sorts of new devices such as Smart Meters in your home for controlling Utility usage -- I like being able to monitor this stuff remotely - and over the next few years we'll have a HUGE range of new hardware that we probably haven't any idea of today.

XP showed that you can't ... Read more

Okay, so i bought a new pre built machine very recently. ANd I have had it set up for about a week now
Asus P5KC motherboard
Intel Core 2 Quad Q660 2.4GHZ
2GB Ram Ballistix
1GB Ram HP
Gigabyte 9600 GT 512mb PCI GRphics card

It came with two hard drives installed, but i took on of them out, to leave me with just one (simpler IMO)!

Anyway, I installed windows XP SP2 with no problems, and since i've had it i've been installing programs, and steam.
I've downloaded a few games with steam, and have been playing through HL2 and more recently Team Fortress 2.

Anyway today, I was chatting with my friend on Windows Live, and then i closed that, and started up Team Fortress 2. However when the program started I could hear all the music that you hear at the menu, but the screen was black!!!

I waited and waited, but nothing happened, so the only thing i could do was reboot. SO i reboot, and the BIOS splash loads up, and then the windows xp boot screen, and then when it should show log in screen, the screen flickers and goes black. And thats it, the hard drive whirrs for a bit, but Theres nothing i can do from there. BLACK SCREEN

I can boot safe mode with and without networking, and I even did a system restore from safe mode, but that didnt work.

I assume it is a video card problem, as it is a game that seems to have caused this problem.

Sorry to burden you with such a long winded story, but I;ve been scouring then internet for days now, and c... Read more

Answer:New Rig Working fine. until.......

Okay, so I think that this is not a graphics card issue, I think it might be a virus. I Unplugged the power cord to my graphics card, In that hope that windows would try to boot up without it. I might try a windows XP repair install next....

I'm planning on buying Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium SP1 64-bit for my gaming pc, I currently am using 2 GB of g.skill ram..I read reviews and many say it's a good idea to get at least 3gb of ram for vista 64. Can anyone comment on this? Is 3gb + really a necessity for 64 bit edition?

Answer:Will 2GB of ram be fine for Vista

1 GB is okay, 2 GB is good, more than 2 GB just helps make the experience smoother. I've used x64 Vista with 2 and 4 GB RAM. It was smoother with the 4 GB, but 2 GB was still fine.

I know I posted some what of a rant on how different windows programs are a joke and I felt that MCE was one of them, but I have to now retract that statement as MCE in win 7 seems to work well for my ADS tuner, the only problem I am having with it now is everytime I select a show it records them by default. when I hit stop it takes me back out to the guide.

Is the recording just a temp file and just deletes its self when I hit stop? or is there a section of my drive that has all the files just taking up space?

Question: BSOD 4GB, 2GB fine

Soooo, similar to another thread of similar name I'm having a similar problem.

I will start with story:
XPSP3 installed for roughly 12 months. Then about 2 months ago, started to have small problems with the C: disk. Random crashes of programs, stuff like that. About 7 weeks ago, then had actual disk errors, "windows can't write to disk" blah blah. Was fine again for a week, then it had major more problems. I turned off the ACPI error thingy, (can't remember on new install have logs on there but can't access), and that let me boot again (previously dropped back to UDMA1 or 2, so was like 1MB/s) and use it.

Then about 4 weeks ago, started getting even worse, so started preparing for new HDD and such.

Week or so ago, bought hardware for server (2x2TB) and started moving everything off the dodgy drive onto another, then onto the server (still plugged in, internal > Gbit ).

Then, barely 36 hours ago, it totally spit the mickey and wasn't able to get in, so had to use a backup I had put on 3rd disk about a week before. It had major similar problems as well (possibly cos original HDD had corrupt, so the backup image also had corrupt stuff), but I limped along then installed W7 after work. Barely 30 minutes after seeing the desktop, BSOD! It complained about memory_management and as such I took out B slot 2GB. Was fine for while, played COD5 no problem, then I put stick back in rebooted after updating, and BAM, another BSOD. Tried install Adobe, it was corrupt and ... Read more

Answer:BSOD 4GB, 2GB fine

Well, your mobo manual specifically states:
4 x DIMM, Max. 16 GB, DDR2 1300(O.C.)/1200(O.C.)/1066*/800/667 ECC,Non-ECC,Un-buffered Memory
Dual Channel memory architecture
*Due to AMD CPU limitation, DDR2 1066 is supported by AM2+ / AM3 CPU for one DIMM per channel only. Refer to ASUSTeK Computer for the memory QVL (Qualified Vendors Lists).
**Due to OS limitation, when installing total memory of 4GB capacity or more, Windows? 32-bit operation system may only recognize less than 3GB. Hence, a total installed memory of less than 3GB is recommended.

Note the ** warning.............. 1 DIMM per channel

Want to know if an amd sempron 64 [email protected], 1 gig corsair xms2 ram, with a Nvidia 6800gs 256mb pci-e. I have another computer, a pent 4 @ 2.4ghz, 1 gig pc3200, using a Nvidia fx5700 256mb and it can hardly handle games like F.E.A.R, bf2, and doom3. Just asking if this combination can run most games and handle the games listed. Thank you .

Answer:will most games run fine on this?

The graphics card and ram should be fine, however the Sempron won't be able to run them at the speed which games will require.

Semprons are low end CPU's built for those whom want to read emails and the like. Go with an Athlon, if your on a budget you can get an AMD 64 3200 for like £70 or there-abouts, and that should 'keep you good' for a reasonable while.

happy memorial day everyone!

my latest problem that im having is blowing my brains out so ANY help at all is much appreciated
ive been using my socket 423 mobo (E210882 IBM Server board in a Gateway tower lol) and one of my hard drives crashed because it got to hot [i think] and windows fixed it but some files got corrupted so i decided to reinstall winderz
so i zero'd the hd and everything was ok with SP2

well i shut down the computer and decided to put a front case fan in and i finally got around to testing it so i unplugged the hd so it wouldnt boot the tried the fan and noticed that i got nothing from that plug which i was just using for another fan i put on my grapics card (i put a cpu fan on my radeon 9550). so i tried unplugging and plugging back in and still nothing. nothing through any fan after that.

i hadnt paid any attention to my monitor and didnt notice nothing was coming up. well i put the fan aside and tried to boot like normal but nothing but a black screen and no input. here's what i tried:
tested monitor with another pc [passed]
put cpu in another pc [passed]
graphics card [passed]
ram [passed]
ps [passed]
new case fan [passed]

i know first instinct would be a dead mobo but how could it be fine then all of a sudden not work? any other tests i can try? alll fans spin, the cpu even gets warm (which im not sure really means anything because i tried a cpu that had been cracked and all the fans still spun) but im kinda bummed out because i just g... Well, I got a call from my daughter the other day saying that the computer I built for her keeps rebooting and won't stay on. Of course I asked her if she had added anything (hardware or drivers) lately and she said no.

She mentioned that she had let the Norton subscription run out and I told her she probably had a bug. So I told her to go into Safe Mode w/networking, go to Symantec, download the program and install and run it.

Now she tells me that it won't install in Safe Mode..... any ideas? Other products that you know of that might install in Safe Mode? Oh- BTW- she mentioned to me last nite when she dropped it off "Oh yeah, I remember, I did open an email that said "A family member has sent you an e-card...." Sheesh! Another Fine mess!

Good Afternoon,

I purchased a Toshiba laptop through Ebay and found that it wasn't exactly as advertised. It was supposed to have Windows XP on it (which I wanted) but came with Windows Vista Ultima (which I DO NOT want). Another problem is that everything is in Chinese and I dont know what to do about it. I have the CDs for XP but not for Vista. Is there a way to uninstall Vista and reinstall XP...and somehow make the computer speak English?

Answer:What a fine mess I've gotten myself into...

Haha chinese :P

But all joking aside. If you really wanna get rid of Vista, the simply just get rid of it. Put in the XP CD and format the partition and install XP in its place. The only problem is that XP may not recognize all the hardware present on the system and you may need to install the corresponding drivers. If you do not have these you may be searching the internet for a while. If Vista isn't that much of a problem for you you can try changing the language I can direct you.

I got a HP Pavilion a1012x PC from a friend who did not needed and since it had XP Home in French I decided to install my own XP Home which I have in English. All went fine, after the installation I re configured the PC and installed some programs and all was fine.

However I noticed after a shutdown / restart I was getting a black screen with the cursor blinking at the top left of the screen and hitting re start again the PC was booting properly, so I gathered that every time I needed a re start the PC needed to start twice.

I figured I may have installed the XP in the wrong partition and decided to do a re install. This time the results were not good. I went thru the same process, delete the existing partition (1 WD HDD 150GB), make a new partition, format, and then started copying files to the HDD and then it reboots

Now it says ?can?t fine the OS? and I did the same process about 4 times with the same results and don?t know why

When XP formats the HDD it says: C: partition1 [New <Raw>] 152627 MB (152626 MB Free)
on 152628 MB disk 0 at id 0 on bus 0 on atapi [MBR]

Any ideas what went wrong?

Hi all, I've had this problem for some months now, and I can't seem to fix it despite my best efforts. When I try and write a dvd-r the computer freezes solid, and I have to restart. I've tried different software, a different drive, and changing the ram. I've also reinstalled a hard disk image to where everything was working - all to no avail. By chance I found out this weekend though that it will write to dvd+r disks with no problem (I've never used them before). Oh yes, if I use my video editing software to write my video to dvd-r that appears to be working okay. I hoped somebody somewhere might be able to glean something from the disparity between dvd+r and dvd-r disks- its certainly got me beat. I'm using xp home edition, service pack 3, the drive is an LG supermulti, I have 4 GBs of ram fitted and its an AMD Phenom II 3.4 quad core cpu. Thanks for any help.

Answer:DVD-R now crash the pc but DVD+R fine!

Hi and welcome to TSF what did you use to write to the dvd-r

I have a 900mhz amd athlon, 512ram, 40gb hard drive, windows xp, rather old but still pretty good for my needs except if i turn it off it takes about two hours to get it started properly,if i leave it running, which i now do it will work fine, and i can also restart it fine but if i shut down over night or long enough for it to cool down i have to start and restart until it works, takes a couple of hours, within those hours it starts but black screen, starts and freezes, starts and restarts on its own until eventually it will be fine, i have tested lots and it isnt windows, ram, hard drive.

Answer:p.c is fine if i leave it on

Have tested everything else, then I suspect your power supply may be on the way out.You could remove and clean it, they do attract a lot of dust in the fans, and as you say, your system is quite old now :)

I have tried the repair and goes straight back to blue screen. I have also tried to reinstall from the disc and it just hangs on starting windows.

Any Ideas??

Thanks in advance

Question: I need fine tuning

Good day all.

I recently installed win 7 ultimate x32. I am not happy, maybe I missed some important settings or I need fine tuning.

I am getting sometimes blue screen where I needed to do recovery startup, sometime system frozen with hibernate maybe so I am forced to switch system off then start over.

Please help to find where and what is wrong I did.
How can I diagnostic and find problems and how to fix it.

I know my questions are not specific and general that is tough to be answered but this is my case.

Please help.

Answer:I need fine tuning

Had the same problem and it was due to the wireless mouse ( Logitech ). Changed to wired " Tust " mouse and everything has worked perfectly since.

I'm just another one of many who knows just enough to really foul things up,
and so I did.

I'm afraid I deleted some files using add/remove programs that I need,
worse yet I did this to my wife's computer, so I'm "in the doghouse"

My symptoms are: can't open Internet explorer
Outlook express will open and show a list of e-mail but the e-mails will not open or cannot be seen in the preview pane.

I'm using Firefox to access this forum.

I did a search and read the first 100 threads on Outlook Express, no joy.

I went to the "common fixes" thread on register DLL files (because I suspect there may be some missing) and followed the following steps.

Manual way:

Click Start => Run and copy and paste the following line into the run box: regsvr32 urlmon.dll, press OK. Once it is copmpleted you will get this message DllRegisterServer in urlmon.dll succeeded, repeat the above steps, but replace regsvr32 urlmon.dll with:

* regsvr32 actxprxy.dll
* regsvr32 shdocvw.dll
* regsvr32 mshtml.dll
* regsvr32 browseui.dll
* regsvr32 jscript.dll
* regsvr32 vbscript.dll
* regsvr32 oleaut32.dll

I got a "completed" box on everyone except the underlined/bold
could this be a "clue" to what my issues are?

Any help is very much appreciated, because I sure would like to "crawl" out of this doghouse!

Answer:Another fine mess I've gotten me into.

Do you know what programs you deleted? it looks like Internet Explorer got corrupted

Go to start, run, type: cmd press ok to get to command prompt

Run sfc /scannow from the command prompt

This is a Vista Home-Basic SP2 OS

My Nikon Digital Camera worked on this desktop (uploaded pics from the cam to the PC) last time I attempted it (about six months ago), but since then the computer was moved (meaning unplugged, etc.), and now it won't work (PC doesn't recognize the cam?).

I used to be able to simply attach the camera to the USB cord, and it was recognized automatically. Now I can't even find it when I look for it..?

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance . . .

Answer:Dig Cam Worked Fine Before, but not now?

Have you tried a different USB cord as maybe the one you are using has become faulty ? Have you connected other devices to USB port and do they work ok. ?? Look in Device Manager and see if any Yellow exclamation or Red Cross markers. Have you connected it to another Rig??

I am working on a machine that will go on-line without problem using AOL 9.0 (which I hate), but will not function using IE I just get Cannot find server:

The page cannot be displayed
The page you are looking for is currently unavailable. The Web site might be experiencing technical difficulties, or you may need to adjust your browser settings.

Click the Refresh button, or try again later.

If you typed the page address in the Address bar, make sure that it is spelled correctly.

To check your connection settings, click the Tools menu, and then click Internet Options. On the Connections tab, click Settings. The settings should match those provided by your local area network (LAN) administrator or Internet service provider (ISP).
If your Network Administrator has enabled it, Microsoft Windows can examine your network and automatically discover network connection settings.

This is a weird problem. I have downloaded some videos of exercise routines from YouTube. They're in mp4 format. All of them are less than 700 MB. I have blank CD-Rs. I use DVD Flick for authoring and ImgBurn for burning the CDs. Some of them work fine. Some of them work fine when I view them on my PC, but when I try to play them on my TV the sound is chopped up. Sometimes I can figure out what is being said, but it's very unpleasant. Other cases it's just hopeless. I tried converting one to avi, but the result was the same when I burned it to disk. DVD-Rs aren't really that expensive, and in one case it would even make sense to combine four videos on one DVD, with a menu to select from, but it offends my old-fashioned sense of aesthetics to use a 4.7GB DVD-R for a file that's only 41 MB. Any suggestions?Edit: Moved topic from Windows 7 to the more appropriate forum.~ Animal

Answer:vcd fine on pc but choppy on tv

The problem is that your PC has a different player than the TV.
I use HDMI, no more burning and no more converting...
If it plays good on the PC it plays good on the TV or any other screen !

I’m having problems with IE9 on a Dell XP420 hard wired thru a Cisco Valet, (not using wi fi on this computer.)
Problems are slow to load, not getting complete page loaded without several refreshes, and when I install any add on‘s like Google toolbar, the option to open a page in a new Tab disappears.
I was running IE9 without issues, but after watch a video that crashed and locked the computer mid run, I lost the ability download any file. I managed to get the download function to work again, but since then, IE9 is funky. I run Advanced System Care 4 and Security Essentials, both say I am clean. I do get Windows messages saying I have corrupt files in my temporary internet folder while running programs like Advanced SystemCare 4 and PC Check Up?

I removed IE9 back to IE7. IE7 seems to run ok. In internet Options, Advanced, I have reset to default both the Advanced setting and the general IE setting. If I reinstall IE9, I have same problems.

Any suggestions on how to configure the advanced settings?

Answer:IE7 seems, Fine, IE9, Has several problems

May I suggest, download and try another browser (for a test) maybe Chrome, or Firefox. If it works the problem is with IE. Lets start with this remedy.

I have a three year old Mesh PC (AMD Athlon, Award BIOS, Windows XP et al.)which has worked faultlessly until now. The problem is that it takes 2, 3, 4 sometimes 5 attempts to get it to fire-up but when it does start it runs perfectly. However I do get the following message....During the last boot-up, your system hung for an improper CPU speed setting. Your system is now in safe working mode. To optimise the system performance and reliability, make sure the CPU speed conforms to the specifications of your CPU.My first thought was the CMOS battery, which is now replaced, has gone duff and yes, the BIOS are set up correctly as far as I can tell. As I said apart from this minor inconvenience (actually it's a blooming nuisance) the PC runs well. Can anyone in PC land offer some advice, thank you everyone.

Answer:PC is fine when it starts!

It may be that the settings for the cpu frequency, clock multiplier, voltage or FSB have been disturbed in the BIOS settingsYou can find the correct settings at the AMD web site click here and then check them against your BIOS settings (press del on boot up), or if you post the model and speed of your processor here we can post the correct settings for you to check

Hello Chaps,Both my desktop & laptop have OS XPHome. I did a format and new install of XP on the desktop PC last week and also installed SP2 (it's SP1 on the laptop); UNTIL then I could connect together using a crossover cable. No, I lie - AFTER the re install of XP, I copied back files I had put on the laptop for safety until I'd re installed XP. With me so far? This evening, I tried connecting with the crossover, but although the N/W icon is visible(in sys tray)and connected at 100Mbps, there is a small yellow triangle on the icon - when I open that, I get a window telling me 'limited or no connectivity'. There is the option or 'repair' which doesn't, so I'm at a loss as to what to do next! I have noticed though, that in control panel/network connections (on desktop), the local area connection icon also has the yellow triangle, but in control panel/network connections on the laptop, there is NO triangle, and an additional icon 'network bridge enabled'. There isn't this network bridge enabled icon on the desktop. Please could you help me with this one?thanks a lot,AngeTheHippy

Answer:The N/W was fine until I re installed XP...

The bridge on the laptop may well be the root cause. Check the Netcon folder and I'll bet that your LAN adapter has been bridged with the 1394! This can sometimes happen when an ad-hoc network is used, though MS apparently doesn't know exactly *why* any more than I do!

Until recently, I was running 32bit Vista. Last week, I installed 32bit Win7 (7100 build).
That worked fine but then I decided I'd like to install 64bit Win7. I don't use torrents so I made an installation disk from 17 Rapidshare files provided on another (reputable) forum. This was the 7127 build of Win7 x64. When I inserted the disk and clicked 'run', I got an error message. A similar message came up when I went into the folders on the DVD drive and clicked 'setup.exe'. The two messages are attached.

I went into BIOS thinking I might be able to boot from DVD drive but, even with DVD selected as first boot option, I got the usual choice of Vista or Win7 (I haven't deleted Vista yet).

What am I doing wrong? Many thanks.

Answer:Can't instal x64 (but did x86 just fine...)

It looks like Seven thinks you're trying to "upgrade" from your current 32-bit install to a 64-bit install -- which you can't do. You can only do a clean install.

hi guys,

my OWA has been working fine with this url:

now i always had to add an exception when connecting...but it worked
now on friday i get a server not found page.

but when i type https://ipaddress/exchange the certificate screen comes up once but when i say ok it redirects me to an open dns search with the ipaddress in the search field, then if i try again it just takes me to an open dns search.

This is happening inside my lan as well as outside. i can ping the external address so there isnt a connection issue. I feel this is some sort of DNS issue. i have been reading on OWA problems...but its very broad and i feel i am chasing my tail. or looking in the wrong direction. All services are running and i have followed directions to reseting the iis virtual volume etc...

My brothers computer recently developed a problem, its an old Dell optiplex GX1 500L+ and hes on XP pro

he came home and the monitor was flashing the little lights on the front that indicate it being over range

we tried an older monitor, as well as my own LCD that Im typeing on now, both had the same results, as well as in VGA mode

the monitor acts normal up untill the loading windows screen, where it promptly goes blank and begins with the flashing lights

but booting into safe Does work and gives us a picture, so I dont think it could be problem a problem with onboard graphics, so Im guessing its a malicious program that is inflicting this problem, unless someone can tell me otherwize

does anybody know what would likely be the cause of this, or the best way to trouble shoot it, we already did a Repair installation, that didnt fix anything and I figured Id ask here on the tech forum before proceding to wipe his hard drive, my question on the forum is also a lilttle bit curiosity driven, thanks

Answer:Over Range but was fine before

I built a new system in August of this year. 6700k, 1080gtx blah blah. I heard so much shit about Windows 10 being junk, I caved in and bought a key on here for Win 10 64bit Pro. And it was the best thing I have ever done. Or spent 25$ on. For me, the install went smooth. I mean all I did was create a USB key for the OS install which took minutes and then booted and installed Windows 10. Now it's December and my OS is clean, mean and a gaming machine. Everything works fine and I have 0 issues.

What the hell are you guys doing to your systems that Windows 10 is junk on it? I know a shit ton can go wrong and MS is far from perfect but throughout my entire career, starting way back in 1990 when I was 15 I have never gotten to the point of some folks on the internet with their issues. Can't people just fix shit and run a smooth system?

I don't know. I am lightly touching the subject but even with Creative sound cards, never really had a show stopping issue that I couldn't resolve. Maybe it was the combination of hardware I choose every time I went to build a new system.

Lucky maybe?

Answer:Windows 10 is uhh...fine?

One point of data means nothing. Wait until you get some Apps installed you didn't ask for, or some update comes along and breaks something and resets your settings. W10 isn't *horrible* but its a step down with regards to testing/QA and a step towards the evil walled garden model. Its no longer your machine. Microsoft just lets you use it.

What should I do? HELP!!!!!Thanks.

Answer:It worked fine until....

unconnect everything (both battery and ac adapter)... then press your power button ten times in 3 sec interval, with the last press duration for 30 seconds. Then connect everything back and restart, see whether this works, otherwise you could have a dead motherboard.

Hi Folks,
First of all I would like to say thanks to captiancranky for the advice, and im going to have my wife come with and do the math for me when i go to buy memory next time.
At the risk of bieng impugned, admonished, and castigated, with Vahementi's semi permanant sticki a few inches above, Im going to ask anyway.
I recently purchased a graphics card, one of the variations of the Ati hd 3650 1gb. i noticed it idled @ 55c and up to 85c when playing crysis on maxed out settings. That seemed rather high temp so I tried getting some information on maximum Gpu temp and the only thing i could find was this in the help section of Catalyst.

If a GPU is being used at or close to its maximum capabilities, or if the card is running close to 110 ºC, do not increase the GPU or memory clock speeds.

Im not sure if that means that 110c is okay, but i suspect not, as i believe that was roughly the temperature they achieved at chernobyl shortly before things went awry. I tried finding some threads addressing Maximum Gpu temps on here and i found varying opinions by a few TechSpot evangelist's that ranged from 'no more than 60c' to ' if its working at 100c, its fine'. and i havent been able to find this information even on the manufactures website. Its always been my understanding (probably in error) that although the arcitecture is different, a GPU is a dedicated CPU, and i dont know of a cpu out there that should be run at 80c-110c.

Answer:Anything from 30c to 120c is fine

All chips have a different safe operating temp, depending on how they've been designed.

From memory, both ATI and nvidia don't release this information (for GPUs), unlike CPUs which the same information is readily available.

Therefore, it is true that some graphics cards may work at temps over 100C, some may only work at 60C (I'm quite skeptical, as 60C is pretty low temp).

(I'd say all, but I'm sure there are some oddball chips around, so) Most chips these days have a temp sensor, and would shut down if critical temps are reached, or even underclocked. Therefore, I'd say if you aren't running into any problems whatsoever with your graphics card, you should be fine.

However, if you are running into trouble, check if you have enough ventilation in your case. All graphics cards should come with adequate ventilation in terms of its heatsink and fan combo, and its up to you to provide enough case ventilation for it to work. So if you have enough fans on your case, and you're still having temperature problems with your graphics card, you probably have a faulty card.

So the techie says to the PC Doctor, "My cpu makes a lot of noise and won't autoboot upright. When I have it lying down on its side it runs perfectly." Dr says, "Well son, just keep the cpu on its side." Sadly space constraints won't allow me to keep the unit on it side. So I'm here to seek a second opinion.

The unit is a 3 year old Dell Optiplex from a local Uni's surplus so I don't have any of the orig disks. When it is upright the unit starts up with a loud whirling sound. It brings up the Dell logo on a black background but then quickly prompts for F1 or F2 keys to be pressed. When the unit is laying on its side all is quiet and the unit auto starts Windows. I apologize if this is not the right section to post but it seems to be related to the hard drive and its connectivity or lack thereof.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions on how to fix.

Answer:Fine tuning with a 2x4

Perhaps the heatsink is loose, and not contacting with the processor when its standing up. Take the side of the case off and see if you can wiggle the heatsink, also find out where the noise is comming from. Check that all your data and power cables are seated properly.

My friend has a laptop, and said he was watching some you_tube vids, and a pop-up appeared saying he had to pay a fine of $xx amount for downloading music..

He is bringing the comp to me now, so I haven't seen it for myself.

Just wanted to see if anyone heard of this and what it is.

I just told him not to click on it..

Should I run defender and MSE, and see if its picked up?

Any feedback is greatly appreciated

System info at bottom of page.

So first time putting together my own PC.
Worked great for about 6-8 weeks, then started not powering up at all, no fans, no light nothing. Come back many hours later and it would be on.
Started trouble shooting, eventually worked out that unpluggging PSU then plugging back in would get it going. Changed to old Antec 750W PSU, pc powers on with this PSU for 1 second, then powers off for 3, then turn on and is fine.
Looking over case for totally unrelated reason, found that rear i/o panel tab was sticking into my usb type c female plug, i assume shorting it out. Fixed this, Cooler Master PSU still does not power on at all when asked, Antec still powers on/off/o.
Powered both PSU on with paper clip and both come on fine. When Cooler Master PSU installed, green wire has correct 5V, then drops to .7-.9V and does not power on, although does seem to make a very slight wine from PSU. Checked same thing with Antec PSU and it has the same 5v, then drops to .8, then gets 5V again, then looses it again, I assume Antec PSU is fine.
Why would motherboard be telling Antec PSU to turn on, then off, then on again? Would the short in usb type C socket fry CPU?
I have tried reseating GPU, CPU and RAM to no avail.
Have run bench on CPU-Z to test CPU scores 1661 single thread and 10359 multi-thread which seems passable from what i can gather. Can CPU score well, work well and still be damaged?
Thanks in advance

Okay, totally new to VPN setup, but I'm excited that I've gotten my first one to work - kind of. I have a Cisco RVS4000 and a Windows 7 machine setup as a workstation server. That machine is setup as the VPN host and allowing callers to connect from IPs in the range to Using the QuickVPN client, I can connect to VPN just fine. woo-hoo. But I can't figure out how to access the other machines on the network once I'm in. My IPs are in the same subnet -, but the office network is 192.168.5.*** and my home is 192.168.1.***. Is that where my problem is? Do I need to be in the 192.168.5.*** range?

The way I understand it I don't need to setup a IPSec tunnel since I've used the QuickVPN client, right? Makes sense as I CAN get connected. I just don't know what to do now and can't seem to find it in the manuals or elsewhere that I've searched.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I did figure out how to manage the router across the VPN and can get into it just fine. I just don't know how to set up connection to the workstation server.

Answer:VPN connection fine, now what?
