W510 WiMAX cannot turn on or turn off with FnF5

Question: W510 WiMAX cannot turn on or turn off with FnF5

New W510. (4318 CTO, 16GB, WIndows 7) Used new 640GB drive to install Windows 7 Pro x64 from scratch. Installed lasted versions of drivers from Lenovo W510 support site. Almost everything works, except the WiMAX. WiMAX shows up and seems to be properly controlled in the preload. It does not show up in my rebuild, so the HW is there. Among other things, I installed Power Management Driver, Power Manager, HotKey Features and the Intel WiFi WiMAX 6250 v13.00.0000 (both WiFi and WiMAX parts) but just the WiFi part shows up in the OnScreen Display when using FnF5. The WiMAX does not. The drivers show up in the Control Panel programs list and there were no problems indicated during installation. Am I missing something or is there a trick to the installation order?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A bit more information: Under Network Connections the WiMAX adapter is listed as unplugged. Local Area Connection 2 Network cable unplugged Intel(r) Centrino(R) WiMAX 6250 Seems odd to me that it is not listed as a wireless device. Any suggestions on how get the WiMAX working?

Hello, I am trying to install a new CLEAR 4G/3G USB modem and the 3G drivers install but the 4G drivers are not installing. I am installing directly from the modem.  This modem works just fine on another laptop running XP SP2. The CLEAR tech support spent an hour with me trying to get it to install and finally said that my laptop is somehow preventing it from installing properly and I should call Lenovo, Before I do I figured that I would see if anyone has had this issue. Thanks,-Mike

I am unable to install the drivers for the Centrino WiMax 6250 driver.  I use the Toolbox Get Lenovo updates option but each time I try to install the driver I get the "1 Package did not install".  I cannot install the driver manually either.  Has anybody else run into this problem?

Hello everyone,It seems that my XPS 9550 has a motherboard issue. I have got this laptop for several months before this problem happen. At first, the power button needs to pressed twice before the computer can turn on. Pressing it once will only cause the button to light up and fans to start spinning for only seconds. Then, after about a week, the problem got worse. I have to static discharge the BIOS and charge the computer for about 12 to 24 hours to get it working again. The light indicator did show that the CMOS battery is dead several times, and I had the CMOS battery replaced, but still no luck. I have run the diagnostics many times, but everything seems perfect. And I can get into the OS once the computer powers on.en.community.dell.com/.../This post points out a similar problem, but I think it has nothing to do with the battery or most of the motherboard components.Does anyone have encountered this before? Any advice will be appreciated.- Peter

So I had a problem with my T500's backlight initially and long story short, disassembling the computer has now caused the problem in the title. Whenever I plug in the battery/charger and push the power button, the fan will spin and the hdd will whirr a bit, but then after about 3 seconds, the fan will stop and the hdd will click off and cease whirring. The computer will no longer respond to the power button regardless of how many times nor how long the power button is held. I'm looking directly at the wires that carry power. Everything seems to be plugged in. I did the lenovo power trick (IE the 10 one second presses followed by the 30 second long press) and the computer does the 1-3-3-1 beep when I take out the RAM. The monitor is not plugged into it in any way, shape, or form. I do not know if this affects it. However, I have tried attaching the monitor and it still does this. Is there a piece that may have been knocked loose or something? I'm willing to try anything right now because at this point it's a literal brick now.

Answer:Lenovo Thinkpad T500 will turn on for roughly 3 seconds, then turn off and stay off.

Hi npesina, welcome to the forums,

there could be different reasons for the system behaving the way you describe, my suggestions;

remove all hard, SSD and optical drives to see if you experience the same,
remove all RAM, without replacing the drives, and test to see if you receive a system beep code,
remove all components which had previously been removed to test again.

The ultimate test would be to remove everything attached to the mainboard including the CMOS (BIOS) battery excluding the power socket, CPU and the fan. When you attach the power cable the system should come to life, the fan should run and beep codes sound.  After that its really just a case of putting the system back together one component at a time testing inbetween each component replacement, leave the main battery and CMOS battery until last to save having to always connect / disconnect the keyboard in order to turn the system on.

If at any point you experience the same issue as now it may well be that the component you replaced at that point or it's attachment socket on the mainboard  is the culprit.

How do I turn on WiFi by command line, so that I can control it from various commandline scripts?
How do I configure the script for WiFi for autostarting hotspot whenever WiFi is turned on?

Ad-Hoc requires that you restart the session each time.

Connectify pro has an auto start option that does this but it's a paid version, connectify lite is free but I'm not sure if has auto start.

I have a bit of a strange issue with my computer. Forgive me if I'm a little too descriptive, but I'm not sure which details are relevant and which are not for such a problem. First, the specs:

Model: eMachines T2984
Operating System: Windows XP Service Pack 2
Processor: Intel Celeron D Processor 340, 2.93 GHZ, 256K L2 Cache, 533 MHZ FSB
Power Supply Unit: Bestec Model: ATX-250-12E REV: P7
Motherboard: I can't tell, but it appears to be an Intel motherboard by the number of Intel labels on it
RAM: 512 MB DDR SD originally, added 1 GB a couple of months ago
Let me know if you need anything else...

Yesterday, I got home from shopping around 1PM, and I tried to start the computer. I pushed the power button, and nothing happened. I checked all of the cords, and they were all plugged in. Not knowing what else to do, I opened up the case to see if there was something obviously wrong. The only thing that I noticed (other than a bunch of dust) was that the power supply unit was still hot. I shut the computer down about 5 hours earlier after about 20 minutes of use, so it seemed strange that the power supply was still hot. I unplugged the computer just in case there was some sort of fire hazard.

At this point, I called a friend who suggested that the problem might be with the motherboard or the power supply unit.

A few hours later, I plugged it back in to try to get it to work. As soon as I plugged it in, the entire unit suddenly started "running" by itsel... Read more

Answer:Computer Doesn't Turn on, Fans and Some Lights Turn on Automatically

I would suspect that the Power Supply Unit (PSU) is going south. If you have a spare one laying around, install it and see if the problem goes away.
You can buy a new, better PSU from Newegg for about $40.00. I have used a Thermaltake 430 watt in one of my machines for some time now and it works well.
You will have to check the size of your PSU to be sure a new one will fit into the eMachine.
Here's the page with that PSU on it. It's the last one on the list.

Hi All,

I am using Windows 8.1 and had to refresh my computer as I was experiencing some problems. Everything seemed to be normal so I started slowly installing the programs I had before. Now a few days after, I find that my wireless device is Off and Flight Mode is On. I have been in settings but the relevant switches are disabled.
Can anybody tell me how to fix this please ? I really don't know how it happened. Can it be that my laptop is still infected ?

Thanks,
Robert

I had it for nearly 2 years,Lenovo Y50-70 Touch -2 days ago while playing games on it, I smell a chemical smell coming from it so I immediately shut it down just in case. The next time I turn it on, it was fine the backlit keyboard glow red as usual but no display, and now it shut down after 4 seconds (with the fan running) whenever I turn it on except, sometimes It stay on (but still no display and no fan running).I got no experience into opening pc and such, I I tried opening it up and remove the dust that built us by quite a bit and tried to locate where the chemical smell was from, I though it was probably from the Fan or Coolers as it seems more strong there but not sure. After trying to turn the laptop on a few time the strong smell kind of dissipate a lot, and smell weaker.I been having a hard time trying to pinpoint just which part of the laptop is needed to replace. So if anyone could help me in the right direction it would be great. I just hope it wont have to buy a whole new motherboard x.xAlso idk if thats helpful information, but the first year playing games was fine, but the 2nd year and the laptop kind of overheated so I tried to cut down a bit and the fans were making more noises than ever. Especially when opening a new game or google chrome.

Answer: Laptop turn on for 4 seconds (No Display, Fan noise) and then turn off

A chemical smell to me tells me it's likely a failing/burnt out capacitor...It would be best to have it checked out at a shop...

Hello Folks,

I'm not sure if my issue is with hardware (possibly MB?) or graphics card, so please forgive me if I've posted in the wrong section. The first problem I was having was random blue screens of death that displayed graphic card driver issues. I was able to remedy that by updating my graphic drivers and have not had an issue since.

However, ever since then I have been running into another hardware or graphics-related issue that is random and completely stumping me. What is happening is, I will be on my computer, leave and turn my monitor off, and (randomly) when I come back to use my computer again, when I turn on the monitor there is no signal and a black screen (e.g. when I turn my monitor on my desktop will pop up and the light on my monitor will turn blue, when it doesn't turn on there will be a black screen and the light on the monitor stays yellow as if it is idle). I have tried swapping out the monitor to see if that was the issue and the same problem persists, so it does not appear to be my monitor or VGA cables.

The only way I can temporarily fix this issue is to reboot/restart my computer and viola! The monitor works again and I can see everything. This issue is very random. Sometimes I can go weeks without an incident, other times this is happening a couple times a week. I honestly don't know if it's my motherboard or video card or what. My PC isn't overheating, I'm not overclocking, and all of my drivers are updated.

I'm not sure what... Read more

Hey guys, little help here please.
Sometimes when I try to turn on IS it tries to turn On but everything greys out and nothing happens. Last time I tried it was about 4 hrs ago and since then its been hung up there. I can't open IS from settings now, Loading... shows up and it crashes after ~20sec. I can't turn off wifi because it becomes 'frozen' and when I press Back/Start button nothing happens but if I long press back button it show my active window is Start screen even though I am still in Wifi settings. After I release button wifi closes and end up in start screen.
I know if I soft reset everything comes back to normal. 99% I can even turn on IS. But why does this happen and how do you solve this problem (I know in the past some ppl used to have it)

Answer:Internet sharing doesn't turn on + cant turn off wifi

After a bit of searching this was the only answer I could find.
Remove/uninstall your nokia acount, install access point....you will get your internet sharing.
Not sure if that will help you or not but it's worth a shot.

Running Windows Vista Ultimate.

Display turns off after about fifteen minutes regardless of whether I am actively using the computer or not. The only way to turn the display back on is to close and then open the lid. This disconnets me from AOL, so I have to sign back on again, and if I was emailing, I might lose my current email.

Under Power Options, I have 'Turn off the display' set to Never for both On Battery and Plugged in. Under 'Put the computer to sleep' I have both On battery and Plugged in set to never. Nonetheless, the display still shuts off while I am working.

What do I need to do to prevent the display from turning off at odd intervals?

Answer:Vista Ultimate x64: turn off display, will not turn back on

sounds like your display drivers are crashing.

Do not rely on windows update drivers - go to graphics chipset manufacturer website and get latest drivers

Wife updated Norton twice and had two Norton Firewalls and Windows Firewalls running together. Paid twice for the 2 updates. Removed Norton Completely and then re-installed Norton 360 Security Version 5, but am still unable to turn off Windows Firewall under Windows XP Pro and also cannot turn on Automatic updates, getting message "we're Sorry, the Security Center could NOT change your Automatic Windows Update setting. To try changing these settings, go to SYSTEM in Control Panel. On the Automatic Updates Tab, select AUTOMATIC (recommended) and then click OK. None of this works, then tried using an app to reset Security Settings and that didn't work either. Any suggestions on what I try next. I just put together my first computer 6 months ago. It abruply shutdow in the middle of writing a paper for school. I couldn't turn it back on right away. after trying a few times, it turned on. All the fans are working even the fan on the power supply, the motherboards lights are on. My graphic card in on the motherboard. I think it might be my power supply because when I first put it together I didn't plug in the smaller power connection to the motherboard and the same thing is happening, black screen. It's like my computer isn't giving my monitor any feed. I will have more info when I get home. I can't get in to bios or safe mode.

This is driving me crazy. My HP has Windows 7 and everytime it connects to the internet (wireless connection) Windows Live Messenger opens down in the left hand corner taskbar near the start menu. I close it, and fifteen minutes later it will open again.
I opened the options and unchecked the boxes pretaining to 'Run Windows Live Messenger when windows starts' but it still repeatedly opens. I use hotmail, but i really have no use for Messenger. The program is not listed under add/remove programs. Someone please help me turn this thing off.

as for my computer specs

CPU (Processor): Fx-6300 AMD
GPU: R9-270x AMD
RAM (Random Access Memory): 8GB Ballistix sport
MOBO (Motherboard): ASRock 970 Extreme3 R2.0
PSU (Power Supply Unit): Corsair X500 w 80+
Case: Rosewill GALAXY

thanks

Answer:Fans turn on, lights blink and then turn off/on repeatedly.

First, I would unplug everything that isn't necessary. Everything external except for the keyboard and monitor. Internally, just leave the CPU, RAM and video card installed. See if it turns on. If not, you might try and test the power button. Disconnect the power button from the mobo. If the pin headers allow for it, use the reset button as the power button. If not, you can use a flat head screwdriver to power on the computer (cross the two pins for the power button with the blade of the screwdriver). If you do this, just be very careful. Touch only the power button pins and nothing else! You could easily damage components by touching the screwdriver to the wrong thing.

Some motherboards have a power button right on the board that you can press to power on the computer. I looked at a pic of your board and didn't notice one.

If that doesn't do it, plug the power button back in. You might try and play around with the RAM. I don't know if you have 2 or 4 sticks of RAM, but try and boot the computer with only one stick of RAM at a time. If there's a bad stick, you'll find it through this process of elimination.

If none of the above works, then it might be a bad PSU.

Answer:Will the new Maps app have voice turn-by-turn directions?

I forget where I read it earlier. I think it was either ArsTechnica, The Verge or WinBeta. Cortana is supposed to give turn by turn directions and can be asked to repeat them. The maps app is also supposed to be designed by Microsoft, but also uses HereDrive. The actual default camera app for all phones and probably pc's, laptops and tablets is actually Lumia Camera.

Good day!

My cousin asked me to troubleshoot the problem of his desktop. He was telling me that it is not turning on. I was caught by surprise when i turned on the PC when suddenly I heard some kind of explosion. It sounds like a blown capacitor or something to that effect. I immediately unplug the power cord from the wall outlet. I checked all the capacitors and looking for any damage and fortunately it's all ok. I smell the PSU to check if there's any short circuit occured and there was no foul odor or something. I removed the PSU from the casing for and opened it for inspection. I found out that the fuse exploded and broke into 2 pieces. I don't bother to repair it but instead I bought a new 700 watts PSU.

After replacing the PSU I turned on the PC but i found out that the CPU fan will spin for half a second and turn off. Led green light is on but no post or beep sound. I did some troubleshooting and these are as follows:

1. I removed the motherboard from the casing and put it on top of the table with cardboard underneath.
2. Clean the RAM stick and tried on other slot.
3. Clean CPU heatsink and fan since it was clogged by dirt and replace thermal paste.
4. Replaced the CMOS battery and move jumper pin 1-2 to 2-3 for about 2 minutes.
5. I turn on the PC without the video card, hardisk and keyboard.

SPECS:
Motherboard: asus h81m-c
CPU: Intel core I7
RAM: 8gb

Btw, prior to the above steps, right after replacing PSU I just clean the RAM and turn it on but ... Read more

Can you post your computer specs, along with your operating system, your external gpu name Is this an external gpu or an internal PCI-E video card?

Can you also post the wattage of your power supply.

At a guess I would say your power supply isn't powerful enough to run the card. "2 seconds off" Is this a new card and what was the reason for the change? On the black screen error this sounds like a basic driver error.

In either case remove 'external' video card from your computer, download the latest drivers for your os and internal video card from the manufacturers website go to; control panel, programs and delete ALL video card related drivers then run this program.

http://majorgeeks.com/Driver_Sweeper_d6171.html

Delete ALL drivers.

Turn on your onboard video card in bios

Now install the downloaded driver for your on board video card, does your onboard work now?
EDIT OOPS! Welcome to the forum!

When I turn the system off the backlight stays on and runs the battery down. It is not the keyboard backlight, it is the screen backlight. If I turn it off or put it to sleep the backlight stays on.
This did not happen prior to the upgrade to 10.

I just picked up the HP Stream 8 at the MS Store this weekend during their VIP event (25$ off 75$ or more). I actually haven't opened it yet, because I'm still deciding if I should keep it.
One thing the HP Stream 8 seems to have is GPS. I say "seems" because no one at the MS store even knew that it had GPS--- I had to tell them about it and pull up the HP website to show them the specs.
I've loved having HERE Maps and HERE Drive on my Lumia 521 because of the downloadable offline maps. I try not to pay for data since I'm near wi-fi 95% of the time, so it is nice that the GPS works without requiring data.
Although there is a HERE Maps app for Windows 8.1, I haven't been able to find an app that is like HERE Drive, with turn-by-turn navigation.
Is anyone aware of such an app?
Thanks!

Answer:Any Windows 8.1 apps with turn-by-turn navigation?

I've used CoPilot Live for a few years and like it's turn by turn ability. I think there is a try version on the store.

I saw that there were others with this issue. I already tried things like resetting the ram, taking out my battery. Even with my laptop plugged in, not lights are showing up and the power button isnt starting anything. I tried to listen and hear if anything was happening, but no luck. I just to get help if there is anything I can do to trouble shoot or just figure out what the issue is so I can get it fixed . I was running Windows 10 on there.

Answer:Dell Inspiron 15R won't turn on ! No lights will turn on .

Hi PARTH511722,
What is the exact system model?
Are you using an original Dell OEM Adapter? When you plug in the adapter to the system, does the adapter stay firm or does it fall off easily? Is the adapter frayed? Is there any damage on the system? Could you test with another power adapter if possible? Could you try powering on with another battery?
Remove the memory and disconnect the HDD and try powering on the system with adapter only / battery only and check.
Does the adapter led stay on and stable or does it go off when connected to the system?
If the adapter led is stable when connected to the system and there are no signs of power, then the motherboard is suspected faulty.
Also, please click my DELL-username and write me a private conversation with the service tag and your Name for case records.
Let us know if you have any other queries.

If I unset "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" on the Power Management tab of my USB Root Hub properties, then when I attempt to restart my computer from the Start Menu, Windows shuts down but the computer itself keeps running,
i.e. the power light stays lit and the fan continues to run. In order to actually shutdown, I have to press the power button for a few seconds. Upon reboot, there is no indication of a failed shutdown from Windows. However, I am able to shutdown from the Start
Menu without problem.
Is this really the intent of not allowing the computer to turn off a device connected to a USB port, i.e. you can shutdown but you can't restart? Seems a bit arbitrary to me.

Yes, i have the same issue. Though it suffices if you deactivate and activate your WLAN adapter @ networkcenter, you don't need to reboot. This happened to me a couple of times as well.

I disabled Multi-Core in BIOS so i don't have regular lags.I always keep energy saving settings to "Maximum Performance" so i don't have regular contrast issues.I deinstalled ThinkAdvantage Access Connections so i don't have random WLAN Adapter "power offs".

I am using a client computer that is connected to a modem via a LAN cable which is in a neighboring house as far as about 50 meters. The host computer is there. The host computer is only using Internet Connection Sharing (without a router) to share its Internet connection with me. Within this network there are only two computers, the one I use (as client) in my house and the other one is the host computer as I mentioned earlier.

How do I know that the host computer is being turned on or off?

The purpose is to know so that I can use all the bandwidth from the modem when the host computer is not turn on. Because there are no restrictions on bandwidth from the host computer, and I just wanted to use all the available bandwidth only when the host computer is not turned on.

Both computers use Windows 7.

after serching all night to find out why his computer is in limbo, i leave my brother's house without finding needed help. his computer won't turn off...the fan, a couple little lights until he unplugs it from the wall. first, the computer did a restart all by itself, he said, then it would not turn on, except the fan and little lights inside that won't turn off. he took out the hard drive and it functions in his other computer...he puts the hard drive back into the new computer and it will not turn on or completely turn off that fan. he tried the "hold the on/off button for at least five seconds" step and nothing changes. he has had the computer for a year and a half, so he really wants to figure this out. how can he even get it to turn on so he could do a safe start up? so far we cannot find a way to troubleshoot. he have checked the cords, perhaps there was a freeze up that began this loop and that's why the fan stays on? please say this is something you have heard of and there may be a solution. the advice we have found usually goes back to buying a new computer. thanks in advance, tea

Hello everyone, I have an HP Envy j100t which I purchased in 2014. ever since yesterday it's been starting but the screen remains pitch black, no display at all. It won't get to start up page, just remains a blank dark screen even though the power light is on and there's no battery issue because it was on charge all night and the AC adopter is still in.   I keep on having to get to get to the BIOS recovery screen, letting that update, and then it proceeds to restart. However when it restarts, it never gets to start up and there is the same dark screen- no display.  I have to always update BIOS, take out the battery and AC adapter, put them back in, and then it will start. Or sometimes even that whole process might not restart it.  Please help!

had this problem even before the change.) Have turned off and back on by GPO and still have issue.  We do not want to turn back the clock and use SSL (nor would our auditors permit it). Any suggestions?

If you upgraded, did the problem exist immediately after the upgrade and before any updates were performed?
If it came with Windows 10 preinstalled, try to perform a refresh.

Hi,

I've set Turn off the display setting in my power plan to 15 minutes and my monitor does turn off after that period (sometimes it doesn't!), but then, sometimes, it turns ON by itself after few minutes.

I've been Google-ing these days trying to find some solution and I came across suggestions which recommends that Allow this device to wake the computer option, located in the Power management tab, in the Properties window of the network adapter, in the Device manager, should be disabled. Also, there were suggestions that Wake on Magic packet property in the Advanced tab should be disabled, too. Unfortunately, all that did not work in my case.

Does somebody know what can cause this problem? Has anyone ever encountered such phenomena?

Thanks in advance.

Answer:Monitor turn on by itself after "Turn off the display" starts

Hello alokin87 & welcome to Sevenforums,

Sometimes the computer Wake from standby because of a program's updating itself. Sometimes it does wake, sometimes it does not!

Therefore it could be the Windows Media center as explained in this Hotfix from MS. You could give a try:

http://www.sevenforums.com/windows-u...ly-2010-a.html

Look at post #1:

"-Do you find that your Windows 7 Computer wakes up from sleep unexpectedly at a particular time every day? If so then you might to check up if any scheduled tasks are waking your PC up."

Answer:How to turn windows firewall off? I can't click the Turn Windows Firew

This may have been disabled on your computer, particularly if you are in a Domain (e.g.: at work, in a library, etc).

However assuming that you have Administrator rights to your computer you should be able to turn it on and off by going to Start > Control Panel > Windows Firewall > Turn Windows Firewall on or off.

If you cannot turn the Firewall off through the above approach try the following Start > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services

Looks for the 'Windows Firewall' Service, double click it, then click on 'Stop'.

From within the Service properties you can also stop the Firewall from starting with Windows, etc.

This is my problem: I have the power saving settings set to turn off my monitor after 20 min. It does briefly turn off, only to turn on again 1 sec. later, displaying a faint very dark blue screen... It used turn off fine, but after upgrading from Windows 98SE to XP Pro I got this problem. Is this the OS or my video card?

Any clues?

Thanks all

Answer:"Turn monitor off" setting doesn't really turn off

Did you upgrade to XP right over the top of 98 or was it a clean install? If you did an upgrade over the top of 98 (and I know you don't want to hear this lol) then you should format and do a clean install. Upgrades rarely leave you with a stable system.

Things to try before you do that though:

1) Make sure your video card drivers are up to date.

2) Make sure Windows is updated - go to windowsupdate

3) try the system file checker (Start, Run, "sfc /scannow" [without the quotes]) to make sure your system files are intact.

Other than that I would say just do a format and install XP from scratch (to be honest, you should do this anyway if you haven't already, you'll get much better stability and performance).

Just got a new to me P3 computer up and running. Sometimes during star up it does not recognize the PS2 keyboard. Which makes it hard to go into my password protected User ID. When trying to shut down it will keep a few things running like some fans and the CD drive. But it does not sound like the Hard Drive is spinning.

If I use the XP to shutdown it goes into this limbo stage of neither off nor on, same goes for the power button on the front of the computer. It will either start up the computer or turn it to the limbo mode. Upon starting up, I can use the mouse to get it all the way into a non password protected XP users screen but can't do anything without the keyboard working. In the process of setting up I have had everything working earlier today but this keyboard and limbo status has been an intermitent problem. What should I try?
Thanks

Hi folks,Just a simple one really, I was told a few years ago that computer operating systems are designed to run continously, and that all the turning off, turning back on helps unstabalize it. As a consequence i leave mine on all the time and have various things e.g. virus update and NU scheduled to run at periodic times.Should I really turn the thing off when i'm not using it?Any opinions / knowledge would be good:-)

Answer:To turn off or not to turn off? that's my question

its up to you.personally i usually turn it on in the morning and then switch off and unplug before bed at night or if im leaving the house unattended.

i suspect it's not hardware related because i have seen the same problem every now and then on other systems. right now i am trying to fix a HP ze4900 that instead of shutting dow when you click on the "turn off" option it actually just reboots. But sometimes the "turn off" option does work. here's an example, i can turn off the lappy just fine 3 times in a row but it reboots on the forth and keeps doing it until the 10th time and then it shuts off normally. sometimes it shuts off properly ten times in a row but not on the 11th time.
i have spent an entire day on this and i would really like some input. i think i reformated the lappy the last time it happened. i have never had it happen to my pc's or lappy's but it tends to happen to computers that are brought to me to fix.......odd i know

Answer:"turn off" does not turn off. WinXP prob.

It's usually a driver issue that causes that.

I have my updates set to "Download updates but let me choose whether to install them"

Yet every now and then, with no action on my part, when I go to turn off my computer or to restart it I get the "Do Not Turn Off" message and windows starts installing updates. This is Ok if the updates are short but very frustrating if it takes a while and I need the computer to restart fast or shut down fast.

Is there any setting that will prevent this from happening?

Answer:How do I turn off update function that causes "Do Not Turn Off"

This is what I use and it works most of the time.

I have 3 Benq XL2720Z monitors for gaming. XL2720Z LED Gaming Monitor | BenQ 16:9 LED Gaming monitors

I would like to know if it's better to turn off all 3 monitors by pressing the power button on all the monitors when not in use for over 12 hours or just let my computer turn the display off which I currently have a way to do to it by pressing a certain key.

Personally I would prefer to just let my computer turn the display off since I only have to press 1 button on my keyboard rather than have to press 3 power buttons on the monitors which don't really work that well.

However my final choice goes down to which is better for the monitors themself. I don't want to end up damaging the monitors.

Anyone know which way is safer? I can't seem to find a clear answer.

Answer:Turn Monitors Display Off or Fully Turn Monitors Off?

Hi,
I got a UPS 1500 battery backup that has 1 plug that controls 3 others that makes the decision for me when the 1 plug is using no power or the machine is powered off

Prior I just used the button on the monitor seems more reliable than counting on a feature to work before windows even boots.

Hi! I own a 3000 n200 machine with win7, and i have multiple problems: first, FnF5 and FnF4 doesn't work. i tried installing any kind of drivers i found on lenovo's support site. if i start TpFnF5.exe manually it display's only the wifi radio, no sign of bluetooth, however i want to toggle bluetooth on/off to save some battery time. Even in access connections 5.61, there's no blutooth button. Second: i wan't to use power manager, i install it, and after reboot it displays me a message that pmeblib.ddl is missing. I tried reinstall, but nothing. Under winxp everything worked correctly. Under win7, nothing works. Quite annoying... Please somebody help!!!!!!!!!!!

Answer:3000 n200 FnF5 and power manager

You need to install power manager driver for vista in vista compatibility mode under 7, that will solve it. I had same problem: http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Lenovo-3000-and-Value-line/When-comes-N200-power-manager-driver-for-7-Ho...

Once again the computer impaired one comes to the table of knowledge...

I shut down my PC, fans stop, lights go out. About 6-8 mins later it starts up again, been doing this for four days now. I ran a virus scan which came out clean. The only way to keep it turned off is to unplug it. The only tinkering I've done lately is to try to open a port on my router (which I didn't get done, forgot password and reset button doesn't work). I don't think my PC is set to hibernate, I have never used that feature.

Is there something I should check?

Thanks!

Hi!

I have lenovo ideapad g585gc 59-356202 e1-1200, dvdrw, 4gb, 500gb, radeon hd 7310m, 15.6" led, ....
Almost 2 years old.
Yesterday it didn't want to turn on, and then I took out the battery and try without it and then turned on and everything is ok.

So,
1. with battery (with or without ac power) won't turn on
2. without battery (of course, with ac power) turn on

The problem is evidently in the battery. I want to buy a new one, but how can I be sure that the battery is really dead?

Answer:Lenovo won't turn on with battery, without battery turn on!

There are no good practical ways the average owner can test the battery. You have to go on the evidence.

When I hit the FnF5 button, I only get the Wireless LAN Radio option and not the BlueTooth. What should I do or check to enable my Bluetooth radio? When I first got my new laptop the radio was on by default and working. Since then I have turned off a lot off options for services that I don't use and might have turned off Bluetooth accidentally. When I reboot I can see the BlueToot LED come on for a split second at the start and then turns off as the laptop starts up. I don't see the Bluetooth adapter on my Device Manager list too. If everything was working normally under what heading should the adapter be listed? Thanks in advance for any help.

Answer:Enabling BlueTooth Radio - Not showing up in FnF5 screen

I had to reinstall Windows XP Professional on my Thinkpad T400 (7417-PAU) and now I can not use AC or Hotkey to manage my WiFi. I get unable to change power state of 802.11 wireless radio if I pres FnF5 and in AC's Connect to the Internet tab all but Other connections are grayed out. I can, however, connect and disconnect from WiFi using Windows Wireless NetWork Connection utility.  Network card is identified as Intel(R) WiFi Link 5100 AGN and driver version is 13.4.0.9. Any help is Greatly appreciated Thanks in Advance Rahmani

Answer:t400 WiFi card not recognized by Access Connection or FnF5

right click the wireless icon in the taskbar, view available wireless networks, change advanced settings, at the top click wireless networks, uncheck, use windows to configure my wireless network settings.  then open access connections and see if you can connect with ac.   usually when fn f5 says unable to change power state, it means that you need to update your driver.  if you go on intel's site and use their scan utility, intel should give you the latest driver for it.

Hi All,I am looking at purchasing a W510. I have a Dell wfp2007 30" monitor that I would like to drive off of the W510, at the full 2560x1600 resolution. The wfp2007 only has a Dual-Link Dvi - and the W510 comes with a DisplayPort. It would seem I need a DisplayPort to Dual Dvi cable to make this work.My questions to you:(1) Anyone have any experience getting 2560x1600 resolution with a w510 and a wfp2007?(2) Would I need to get the dock (even though the laptop itself has a DisplayPort - because of the extra power supply?)(3) Any other reccommendations for driving the wfp2007 with the w510 at 2560x1600?Thank you very much for your help!!Meera

Answer:Thinkpad W510 - trying to get 2560x1600 resolution on Dell wfp2007 using a W510

Go here: http://forum.thinkpads.com/index.php and search for threads by RonS He posted some stuff about W510 and resolution limitations.  As I recall, the W510 has a DVI-I and won't support your resolution. In regards to DisplayPort to DVI-D port on your monitor, one approach would be to by a powered DP to DVI converter.  Passive converts max out at a lower resolution, so make sure you get an active/powered box if you go this route.

Guess what: while almost finished replying to this thread reporting all the crashes caused by faulty ThinkVantage and lenovo products i had a CRASH AGAIN. It is unbelievable the problems and damage that this laptop caused. Mind you i bought the most expensive business laptop to have a care free reliable laptop. Nothing was true. I was involved already with customer support after only 4 months. Display crashes, power controls that didnt work, soud card issues causing oscillating volume. They suggested to run PCDoctor what i did and then suggested after no results showed up to reinstall the OS. Like it would be something as little as configure a startup parameter. Somehow the tradeoff was too big for me and the computer didn show so many random faults any more, also i was using it less. Now again back on track i get random Crashes, not even blue screen crashes. That said Lenovo became a very cheap company, that sells crap laptops. customer service is basically an insult to any remotely intelligent human being.  PLEASE JUST GET THIS IN YOUR HEAD: THE MOST EXPENSIVE LAPTOP MUST NOT CRASH EVERY SECOND HOUR. TEST YOUR LAPTOPS BEFORE THEY SHIP My recommendation to everybody to tell everybody: stay away from this company - for ever. Thanks, a very frustrated and angry w510 laptop owner.

I am returning a brand new W510 thinkpad because of extreme heat at the back left corner with just minimal # of windows running.  It also took 15 seconds to bring up Explore once I'd clicked on the icon, which is a long time.  And the keyboard was EXTREMELY clackity.  The full HD screen strained my eyes and I could seem to adjust it to lower resolution display without words and icons and such showing in almost cartoonish porportions.  So I am unsure what to replace it with.  I am doing 2d graphic work it creative suites and expecially liked the Hueypro pantone color correction built in and touch screen.  So my choices now are to replace with a NEW new W510 with an HD+ screen (1600 x 900) and hopefully a better keyboard and less heat.  Or go to a T510 with HD+ screen and no color corrections system or touch screen but hopefully less heat, etc.  Any suggestions anyone?

Answer:W510 vs T510 after heating problems with W510

I've upgraded from the T to the W510.  Yes the w510 runs a bit hotter at the back, but remember the W is a workstation.  The T510 is a better laptop, the W510 is a powerhouse. The keyboard seemed to be quieter and smoother than on the T510 I had.  As for the sceen-I love it. The colours are too hot, but nothing calibration dosn't fix.  Did you not try the medium setting for the text?  That gives you HD+ sized text.  I really love the screen. The first thing you should always do is dump do a clean OS install and get rid of that Hitachi crap in there.  You can get Crucial SSD's for about Ģ100 now.  As soon as I did a clean install the explorer problem went. Not shure if you have a fulty unit or if you just find the heat too much, but I would stick with the W if you do graphics work.  That screen is better than many IPS pannels-sharp clear vibrant and bringht.  Depends, whats more important to you. A great screen with the abblily to RAM up to 16GB orA cooler laptop with a screen thats a little blue that can only take 8GB. My advise is get a new W510.  Take the drive out, rebuild and see how you go.  Those FHD pannels are like gold dust at the moment.

Good day,
Thanks for reading.

I recently installed Win 8 (not upgrade) on my tablet. One of the downsides has been that I now cannot get my built-in 3G to work as the FnF5 button does not bring up the expected dialogue.

Please can you help me.

George

Answer:X220 tablet - post Windows 8 - FnF5 not working so 3G not working

Hey George,

Are you receiving dialogue at all? If so, what is coming up? Additionally, are other FN keys working as intended?

With your recent upgrade to Windows 8 have you upgraded everything that you could prior to the upgrade, and upgraded what Windows 8 drivers are available? I have seen success with updating the power manager driver, as well as the Hotkey Features Integration Driver. The Hotkey driver has up to Windows 7 Driver, it may possibly help your issue, but make sure you back up, and have the capability to rollback to the previous driver. Good luck and please keep me posted on your progress.

Thank You.

Question: Won't Turn On

Here is my problem:
I shut down my computer one night (start, turn off computer) and the next morning
when I pressed the power button, nothing happened. I checked to see if the mainpwer
switch was on at the back, which it was. I then checked to see if it was plugged in, which
it was. The power bar was getting power and so was the monitor, so it wasnt the power
bar or the outlet. Also the motherboard is getting power. Is there something Im missing?

Question: Won't turn on

So I used my laptop the other day and turned it off using the power button on the front. Ever since then I can't get it to charge or turn back on. Every time I try to turn it back on now the power button just blinks. How would I know if this is my battery or the charger?

Answer:Won't turn on

Remove battery and AC adapter. Hold down the on button for like 15-20 seconds. Wait 10 seconds. Plug just AC back in and try again and note what happens. It is not the battery. Laptop will come on with good AC adapter even with bad battery. Might be the adapter. Does your model (which you should tell us if you want the best possible support) have a light next to where you plug in the adapter or a light on the AC adapter brick? If so , does either light up or both?

Question: Will not turn on

Today I removed the LCD panel of the notebook and the plastic cover is ripped.I thought until I get a new cover, will monitor use, but unfortunately not start. I press the power button to spin up the hard drive and the machine will stop after a few moments. This may be why? What went wrong? Thanks in advance. The laptop is a Lenovo IdeaPad G580GH.

Answer:Will not turn on

Hi worick,

Welcome to the community forum.

If the unit is not coming up with any video at all but there is a power light on the light indicators then it appears the system is encoutering a no POST (Power on Self Test)  issue. .

Is the computer still coming up with a lenovo logo as soon as you turn the computer on?  If there is no video that is coming up but you still see hard drive activity then you may want to double check the LCD cables attached to the system board.

Since removing the LCD panel would require to remove mostly of the parts of the computer, Please double check the items you removed. Reseat the WLAN, RAM, HDD, Optical Disk Drive and/or cables that you have disconnected.

The broken plastic cover on the LCD panel should have nothing to do with the problem.  As a second step you may want to remove the RAM and turn the computer and see if you hear any beep error messages coming from the laptop. You may also want to check by plugging in an external monitor and hit Fn+F3 to see if you get any display to come up.

Please let me know what happens after you try reseating the devices.
Don
