X230: win 7 x64 in uefi using lenovo recovery media

Question: X230: win 7 x64 in uefi using lenovo recovery media

I want to be able to boot my X230 in UEFI only (CSM off). Lenovo media for X230 does not seem to be UEFI bootable, so I boot it with CSM on. The Recovery program asks about the GPT or MBR partitioning with the explanation that with GPT it will be bootable in UEFI only. But when I reboot after recovery and turn CSM off, the "Starting Windows" screen freezes endlessly. There is some hdd activity, but no Windows are loaded.Any clue what went wrong and how to fix it? Thanks.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: X230: win 7 x64 in uefi using lenovo recovery media

You need to enable CSM when ever booting to external devices, so that is normal. The difference between GPT and MBR is that the newer GPT is more robust, secure and allows more partitions and better error recovery, but both should work. If you press and hold down the [F8] key, and then turn on the comptuter, do you get the option to boot in to Safe Mode, and if so can you boot in to Safe Mode, or Safe Mode with Networking? I presume that you are recoverying due to a prior problem, so more informaiton on why you were recovering may be helpful. Best of luck

I bought lenovo thinkpad X230 in January 2013. I made a recovery USB on a 16 GB pendrive. I bought a windows 8 pro upgrade offer as well. But i did not install it at that time and kept it for future use.  About a week ago I installed windwos 8 on my system in dual boot mode making a partition on primary HDD.everything went ok with only problem that my windows 8 did not activate. I was ok with that. But when i tried F11 recovery function, it was not working. So i tried factory reset through recovery USB i created earlier. It opened up and said BOOTMGR missing. Later with some research I realized that i didnt make USB active (bootable) before burning it.(Though this is ridiculous considering, tools provided must have done that. Like when you make windows bootable.) With all this(and me panicking), I tried backing up my data with image i created through R & R tool. After back up, I lost my recovery partition on HDD. And I guess i accidentally deleted System_DRV partition as well.  Though my computer is running fine. I need a bootable media. it would be great if you can provide it. Also if you can restore my comp to factory setting with recovery partition, it would be great. Please help me. Thanks in advance.

Answer:Thinkpad X230- No recovery partition, lost System_DRV and have no recovery media

Hi, You can make bootable media (CD, USB stick or USB HDD) for using with your Factory Recovery Data USB stick.Just launch Lenovo Factory Recovery Disks app from Control Panel, deselect Data media creation, select needed Boot media type. Note you'll need less then 300 mb free space on media.

I recently bought an x230--very happy so far--and want to prepare a usb stick as recovery media, but am afraid to try as I hear you only get one chance to do this. Greatly appreciate answers/advice on the following before I go ahead: 1/ What is the minimum sized USB stick I could use for this?2/ Do I need to make the stick bootable before using the recovery media generation software, or will it do that for me?--the advice I've found on this all seems pretty dated now.3/ Is it possible to boot from a USB 3 stick with x230, and if so is there likely to be any advantage of using a USB 3 stick over a USB 2 one?--I guess question 1 may deal with the advantage or not bit of the question. Thanks for any help. g

Restoring the factory contents by using Recovery Disc Set

When the hard disk drive or solid-state drive is replaced because of a failure, no product recovery program is
on the new drive. In this case, you must use the recovery disc set for the computer. Order the recovery disc
set and the drive at the same time so that you can recover the new drive with the preinstalled software when
they arrive. For information on which discs to order, go to http://www.lenovo.com/serviceparts-lookup.
The recovery disc set consists of the user instructions and the following set of DVDs to restore the computer
to the original factory configuration.
? Operating System Recovery Disc (one disc): This disc restores the Microsoft® Windows operating system.
Use this disc to start the recovery process.
? Applications and Drivers Recovery Disc (one or more discs): This disc restores the preinstalled
applications and drivers on the computer.
? Supplemental Recovery Disc: This disc contains additional content, such as updates to the software that
was preinstalled on the computer. Not all recovery disc sets come with a
Supplemental Recovery Disc.
Notes:
? You must have a DVD drive to use the recovery discs. If you do not have an internal DVD drive, you
can use an external USB DVD drive (Cannot use USB stick to create restore media).
? During the recovery process, all data on the drive will be deleted. If possible, copy any important data
or personal files that you want to keep onto remo... Read more

Hi All! I'm sorry to sound like a bit of a newb here, but i'm looking for a little bit of assistance with my x230 laptop.  I bought the laptop back in september with windows 7 professional.  A couple months later, I upgraded to windows 8 only to not really like it too much and decide for now I want to revert back to Windows 7.  Not knowing what my options were, I installed Windows 7 Ultimate back on the machine through an external cd drive, but now I'm missing about 100gb from my main drive, I ordered a 500gb 7200 rpm drive but now I only have about 350 GB available after the clean install.  I wasn't too sure how the recovery options on the x230 worked.  I see that next to my main C drive, there is another drive there located "Recovery" It has about 75% of the disk space being taken up but there is absolutely nothing within the actual drive when I actually click it.  It's probably too late, but is there any way to actually take my laptop back to the way it was when I first bought it? I only ask because it seems there's something on that recovery drive but I just can't figure out what it is.  I would appreciate any help at all, I'm sorry for sounding like such a newb with this stuff!

Answer:Lenovo x230 Recovery

Hi, Flyerfan16

If you are viewing your drives in Disk Management, how big is the Recovery partition? The partitions from Lenovo are normally between 7 GB and 10 GB when the machine ships. If the original partition is still on the drive, then you should be able to recover to the settings when the machine was first purchased.

You can attempt recovery by starting the machine as normal and then pressing Enter repeatedly to interrupt startup. A menu should then appear, with an option available to recover your system. Press the associated key for this action and then follow the prompts. If all works well, you should be able to go back to the way it was. If you choose this option, make sure to back up all files that you wish to keep that are currently on the system.

Hope it helps,
Adam

I called Lenovo and got my Windows 8 recovery disc shipped out free of charge ten minutes later. I have a case number to prove it! This is so awesome.I didn't say anything except that I didn't know why windows won't start, I didn't know why recovery wont start, and I needed my discs so that I could get things working again. That's the last time I let my mischievious daughter play with my laptop before I get it all set up. The guy on the phone thought that was pretty funny... Thank you, Lenovo! You guys are so very helpful!

Answer:Error: pxe-e61 media test failure lenovo x230 table

Good day and welcome to the community.

Sorry you're having difficulty.
Unless you're actually trying to PXE boot to a network, the error you're seeing often denotes a problem with your HDD (or SSD if so equipped). Essentially, the BIOS doesn't see the drive and steps through the boot device list until it gets to the PC LAN and tries that.

If you look at the StartUp tab of your BIOS and expand the Boot item (1st image below), do you see any identifier for your HDD (similar to #5 in the 2nd image below)?

My T430 has an issue with creating Product Recovery discs. It doesn't give me any options for recovery media. The drop down meny is totally empty. Clicking "update" does nothing. I have updated the software, and rebooted several times, no success. I have a portable USB drive, which I'm going to use as a recovery media. The issue is the same with Lenovo Solution Center and ThinkVantage Tools. Any ideas what might cause this problem? Thank you and regards, -Gary

The disk that was sent to me is a USB written in Universal Disk Format - never seen this format before. It was uninitialized so i considered trying to activate it in a few ways, through diskpart in windows, and also by cloning via linux and adding boot flags to the partition it was written to. No luck, though. I'm reluctant to do much more, considering I paid money for this drive; what gives? How does one use this mysterious little drive?

Hello all, I'm new here. I bought a Lenovo G50-70 at the end of 2014. I want to create a recovery media of my RECOVERY PARTITION. Ok I have Lenovo OneKey Recovery App v8 but with that application I can't create a recovery media of my recovery partition, I can ONLY create a recovery of my current partition (in this case: C: ). I don't want that my current partition has 119 GB. My recovery partition has 15GB, my question is: How can I access there to record it in a USB, DVD or my PC? Thanks in advance.

Hi all!I have ThinkPad x230 with preinstalled 64-bit Windows 7. Laptop has UEFI support, but current mode is "Legacy". I want to replace HDD with SSD and also reinstall Windows using UEFI (later I also plan to install Linux as second OS).I've searched and found [url=http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Windows-7-Knowledge-Base/Prepare-an-usb-thumb-drive-to-boot-windows-7-in... article[/url] with nice instructions about switching to UEFI. But what about ThinkVantage functionality? In some articles I've found information that several features will be unavailable when UEFI used (for exmaple fingerprint reader). Is it safe to switch to UEFI?Thanks a lot and sorry for my bad English.

Answer:ThinkVantage on ThinkPad x230 with UEFI

If you plan to use Win7 there is no benefit to installing in UEFI mode.  The reason is, because Win7 itself requires the CSM (compatiblity support module) which is basically all of the legacy BIOS features, even when Win7 is installed in UEFI mode.

As for the fingerprint issues you read about in the forum, those were all fixed a while ago, so there won't be any issue.  But some other Lenovo apps, such as Rescue and Recovery, won't work on Win7 in UEFI mode.  And within Lenovo, we don't do any testing on Win7 UEFI mode, so I'm not sure what other problems you might run into.

My strong advice is to use legacy mode for Win7, and UEFI mode for Win8.

Hi,
I Just bought 25 Thinkpad T431s Laptops for my company (@ISRAEL)All of them came with windows 7SP1 Installed And Recovery is Windows 8 (not 8.1 even though 8.1 is out for a yr!)
The Install process takes 3 Hours!!! Just for upgrading to windows 8.Then I need to upgrade to 8.1 - the process is about 3 hours more! Because I need to Register And create Microsoft account for each user then to verify the account. After that I need to Log with the account to the PC And then Download the update (3.5GB) And Install it.
IS ANYONE AT LENOVO THINKS THAT ITS ACCEPTABLE?DO I WORK FOR LENOVO? DO I NEED TO SPEND 6 HOURS FOR UPGRADING EACH LAPTOP?

AND ABOVE ALL.If I want to Install Original Windows 8.1 I can't!Because the OS Recovery DVD is not bootable And contain special recovery files with special extensions. Also, there is no PRODUCT CODE! Just "WINDOWS 8" sticker logo on the back of the notebook.

Answer:NO Lenovo Windows 8.1 Recovery DVD for CLEAN INSTALL! + unable to Install UEFI MODE

Hi ohad, welcome to the forums,

I'm sorry to read about your experience.

I don't work for Lenovo but it would appear to me that something may have gone wrong at the sales / purchasing stage; to my knowledge the T431s is only available with Windows 7 preload, (with Win 8 recovery discs in some cases as you have), or with Windows 8 preload. A Win 8.1 preload doesn't appear to be available for the system, but I stand to be corrected on this.  If you required Windows 8.1, in my opinion the better option of the two, would have been a system with the Win 8 preinstall as this would only require updating to Win 8.1

Unfortunately I also can't envisage Lenovo creating a factory image for the T431s because it must be pretty near end of life.

I have a Lenovo T530 where the recovery partition is costing me almost 13 GB, out of a total 256 GB. Disk space is getting tight, less than 10 GB, so I'm wondering about this question. With my previous Lenovo laptop, a T61p, I had 2 DVDs which I could use to recover the system to "factory clean" condition.

I'm running Win 7 Pro 64 on this machine.

Any suggestions here?

So I tried to download a copy of drivers for my Yoga 920, then I noticed the link for recovery media. I tried to download it using the steps and the tool. The download went fine and I proceeded to the Select USB tab. It detected my drive and started the process, then the usb suddenly got disconnected and the process failed. I'm using the laptop on a table and I did not touch the usb during operation. I tried to do the process again, but I get an error as seen in the screenshot. Any help? Tips? to get the thing working again Alternatively, if I don't trust the reset option on the laptop, can I just download a Windows 10 ISO with microsoft's tool and use that to reformat the laptop without inputting a key? Will my device still be activated after the process?

Answer:Failed to Create Recovery Media with Lenovo tool

Hi svrndmngjr,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

The Yoga 920 does not have a special factory recovery partition like One Key Recovery like on other machine.
It uses the same Windows reset features just like all other Windows 10 machines as shown in chapter 3 of the users manual here.

A clean installation using a downloaded ISO (same version of Windows that the machine came with) would automatically activate it. OEM product keys are embedded on the systemboard (Win8 and Win10) unlike having a COA sticker that Windows XP and Win7 does.

You can follow the guideline here. With the drivers and applications, if you have additional copies from the D drive then just copy it or download it from here (support website). Other applications are in the Microsoft Store just type Lenovo in the search to download if you need it.

Your device would still be activated after the process.

Hope this help answer your query.

I apologize if this question is posted to the wrong group. As it is specific to Office 2010 installation on a Lenovo I am not sure where to post.

I installed Office 2010 from CD/DVD. To accomplish this I had to make a drive Q available for the Office installer to work correctly. On Lenovo laptops drive Q is, by default, used to store the recovery media (Windows 7, drivers, etc.). The 'easy' fix was to assign the current drive Q to another drive letter making drive Q available to install Office 2010.

The problem I now have is that I want to create a recovery DVD from the media that is normally installed on drive Q, but is now on drive Z. When I run the Lenovo utility to create the recovery media it cannot find the files. If I try to access or delete the drive Q used by the Office 2010 installer I am denied access. I assume drive Q i now a virtual drive as I cannot see it in the Computer Management >> Storage >> Disk Storage utility.

Can anyone suggest a method for removing the current drive Q (assuming Office 2010 no longer needs the drive), or how I can get the Lenovo utility to see the recovery files on another drive (Z)?

Thanks in advance for any help on the above.

I have been sent 4 sets of Windows 7 Recovery Media from Lenovo over the past week and a half. These DVDs are unusable as they will not boot because they were created as non-bootable DVDs. When looking at the DVDs, they all just have 1 file on them - 0A44006.dvd.  I was sent a set of the 32bit version and it has multiple files on it with Bootmgr and 6 directories and will boot just fine. The 64bit DVDs obviously were created and replicated without any of these files to make it a bootable DVD. Can someone from Lenovo (Morristown, NC) find out why and fix these DVDs. The support center in Atlanta can only order another set from Morristown and I keep getting bad DVDs.

Answer:T410 Windows 7 Recovery Media 64bit from Lenovo will not boot

Hi,

This really sounds like Lenovo has mis-manufactured a batch of recovery DVDs.  Almost like they're copying the ISO file rather than using it as an image.

Out of curiousity (if you care to mess with this) can you open the .DVD file with a free tool like 7zip?  If you can, do you see a more appropriate set of files?

And to double-check: are all the .DVD files exactly the same name?  It would be interesting if the file name was different for each DVD within a given set.

[edit] What size is that file?  It may just be a version indicator (or similar) on an otherwise blank DVD.

None of this helps you directly but might help identify what's going on.

BTW, I've deleted your other post.  It's not quite on-topic in that thread and divides the discussion.  Someone following there might not see a resolution here or v-v.

Regards,
Z.

Hi guys, W540 - Recovery media disks from Lenovo will not boot on startup. Lenovo has sent me a set of recovery media disks to fix my windows problem (Windows cannot activate). I have followed the instructions down to the 'T'. After setting up bios for computer to boot on DVD drive, inserting the disk labelled as (1) disk 1 of  2 and then restarting, the disk does not boot. Instead it just boots up windows again. I have done this many times before on older models but I cannot figure out what I am doing wrong on this one? Hope someone out there has the solution. Thanks in advance! Regards, Michael

Answer:W540 - Recovery media disks from Lenovo will not boot on startup

It's probably set for rapid boot.  Turn it on and as soon as you see the lenovo logo, press and hold the power buttonuntil it shuts off.  Turn it on and when you see the lenovoo logo, hit f12

Hi,I have a 3 month old X230, which is little used as a laptop, more like a home computer (on docking).
Basically I'm really trying to be careful, so I'm very angry when this happened.

Machine: T520 bought Feb. 2012O.S. W~7 Pro 64-bit I want to wipe the harddrive, buy a Lenovo W~7 PRO installation DVD, and do a completely clean installation. Lenovo User Guide (.pdf) Ch. 8, Adv'd Config, Installing Windows 7, p. 295 (212 of 298) says:Start Thinkpad setup, then choose UEFI versus Legacy, then insert the installation DVD. This obviously does not apply when the harddrive has already been wiped (necessary to 100% eliminate all traces of irreversible damage caused by a virus, including the re-installation partition (Q-drive). When an intallation DVD is purchased from Lenovo, is not the first step to insert the DVD ?!! Then presumably there is an installation wizard resulting in a restored O.S. ?!! If not, please tell me what surprises are in store, and where I can find a reliable written resource to consult !!! Thank-you.

Question: X230 recovery Data

I decided to back up my x230 and get alittle more HD space. After i had done this I realized that I had used a 64GB Stick and that was a waste of space. I deleted, (reformatted) this memory stick and put in a 16GB to be greeted with the message "can only have one backup of Windows operating system". Is there a work around for this problem?I don't have a backup now and I want to use the smaller memory stick. Thanks guys

I have a X230 with full onsite technical support package. It needed rebuilding, I have ordered and paid for rescue and recovery discs, made some time in the schedule to rebuild the machine.  The process has completed twice in the last 3 hours - each time it does not work, and asks me to repeat the process. The Lenovo support line will not help "becasue it is not a hardware issue" How do I get my machine working again today. I need it ahead of a two day business trip this afternoon

I'm really irritated how the system works, I'm unable to use a 16GB USB stick, and all it has done is just made it unbootable. Where can I order, but not from my phone but from email/request form? I'm wanting to install 7 on a new system but this system has no license for Windows 7 Pro.

Answer:Is there any reliable way to get restore media for my X230

You can only legitimately purchase Lenovo restore media for the OS for which your system was originally licensed. Since you mention the system has no Win7 license, you would need to purchase at retail.

The only exception I've read about is if your system came licensed for Win8Pro *and* included downgrade rights. In that case, I'd call Service to determine your options.

Hi everybody i hope you are all doing great. Laptop Details:Lenovo Y50-70 Laptop (Lenovo) 203784720hq512ssd960m16gb ram I made a clean install to my lenovo laptop so I lost some essential applications that came with my laptop. I installed almost all the drivers and apps at lenovo driver support download page without problems but i could not find some of lenovo apps that came in my laptop when i bought it and I really need them. The only one available in the driver download page were Lenovo energy manger. The most importants for me that i need are lenovo onekey recovery app and lenovo updates. For onekey recovery I only need the app, not the files to restore the whole partition, because the recovery partition is intact, I did not format it. So I only need the app that opens it. Th apps I want to get back are:1. Lenovo Onekey Recovery app - The one I am more interested in.2. "Lenovo Updates' (lenovo updates is the name of the app) The scond one im am more interested in.3. Lenovo Settings4. Lenovo companion If someone can guide me to where to download each of them, it would be great. I would need for windows 8.1 64 bit or windows 10. Thank You, I hope you can help me.

Answer:Where do I download Lenovo Y50 Onekey Recovery, Lenovo Settings. "Lenovo updates", Lenovo Companion?

Go to the Windows Store and do a search on "Lenovo."   You will find almost all the apps you need are available there.

Hi, I am using a T400, window 7, 32 bits. Yesterday I accidentally clicked on  Start > All Programs > ThinkVantage> Create product recovery media or Create recovery media. I am not sure about which programs I clicked on but it appears an open up window asking me if I want to insert recovery disk, then I click no. It disappeared. It didn't tell me anything( like all the data will be lost and there is no progress box either; it happened very fast like in 5 seconds) and then I find that all my data in hard drive D is gone. I can not see hard drive D anymore in My computer. However I can find the partition titled "recovery partition" with 100% free storage in replace for my hard drive D in the storage management of  My computer and I cannot access it. I am so scared that I don't turn off the laptop 'till now. All the programs are working normal because I installed them on hard drive C but all the data on drive D is lost. Anyone has the same problems? I wonder such a serious software but doesn't have any prior notice to customer that it will cause data loss like this? Thanks.

You can do two things: 1. Go to Windows Anytime Upgrade and purchase the Pro feature. This is the easiest way to upgrade, but it costs a small amount to do this. 2. Try booting from the Windows 7 DVD and see if it will let you start it and install the upgrade. You will need the license key from the Windows 7 DVD to do this. ... JDH

unfortunately most likely the only way is through your Lenovo support channels, anyone distributing the discs online would be doing something which is illegal.

It may be possible to obtain them through the following website, however I'm not sure if the site is valid for systems purchased in the Ukraine.

How to boot original system to instal on mSATA ssd disc, or it cannot be booted from flashdisc? Thanks very much.

USB stick needs Active partition in order to boot. Look at this page: http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/detail.page?LegacyDocID=MIGR-74246As you already have Factory_Recovery media, copy all files from the stick, make that as it's described below, copy files back, try to boot. If laptop will not boot from the stick you should prepare boot media again.

Hi everyone, I've got a CTO x230 on its way and was reading a bit about adding an mSATA SSD to the available slot under the palmrest.  In these forums I've seen a couple posts here telling people that if they have 2 drives installed and want to run the R&R software, that they should remove the drive they don't plan on installing to. Since I'm a tinkerer and will probably be reformatting/imaging every couple weeks or so, is there a better way than just pulling the main hard drive or msata drive from the machine to recover it properly?  What about removing the drive from the boot order in the BIOS until the R&R software has completed? Looking to avoid opening up the case anymore than just the first time installing.  I'd be interested to hear some opinions on this.

Answer:x230 mSATA SSD rescue and recovery

Perhaps we need to clarify a few things here. In order to set up the mSATA As your boot drive, you'll want to pull the existing hard drive. Once the mSATA is set up as your "C" drive and you've given the hdd a new drive letter and changed the boot sequence then there really Isn't much reason to pull drives. As a tinkered, you'll also not want to use the rescue and recovery software in the future anyway as that will restore the computer to delivery condition. What you'll want to do is make that r and r media and put it away in a safe place. Then you'll want to set up your drives as you want them, image them and use that image for restore. You'll probably also want to make an image of a clean install of Windows. You should only need to pull drives in the future if you change boot orders and drive letters.. Even then it may not be necessary if you do it right but pulling the hard drive is the easiest way of setting up the mSATA.

Basically i have a Lenovo ThinkPad L530 laptop.

I've created the recovery DVDs, but unbeknown to me at the time - you're only allowed to create one set. What i'd like is to put this onto a USB stick.

Currently i have:

DVD #1 - Boot Media: (312mb)

The boot DVD containing "BOOT" folder, BootMgr file which is quite small & Winre.Wim at about 300mb.

DVD #2 - Data DVD #1: (4.03GB)

factory recovery folder, recovery folder & Autorun file

DVD #3 - Data DVD #2: (3.87GB)

factory recovery folder & recovery folder (NO autorun file)

DVD #4 - Data DVD #3: (3.04GB)

factory recovery folder, recovery folder, LenovoQDrive file, qdrive icon file.
My USB stick is 16GB capacity.

So basically i'd like to make the USB stick the recovery media. I can't do this from the laptop as Lenovo only let you create one ......... so how can i do this? Can i do this would be the first question & if so - how?

Answer:Creating Lenovo Laptop Recovery media from DVDs. Laptop wont let me do

Hi Nelly I also have an Lenovo its a different model than yous is but I can make as many copies of the recovery discs
as I want . You could make a systems image which would be a lot better than the recovery discs as with them you will always have the bloated software that comes with Lenovo models saying that you would need a lot more space than your 16gb usb drive .

OR if you are familiar with disassembling of keyboard and palmrest do it, then unplug connector of small yellow battery under palmrest (near FPR) during several minuts. Assemble the laptop and try to boot. If laptop will boot go to BIOS setup, press F9 and save default settings, set and save your settings. If that actions will not resolve the issue I'm afraid you have to contact with Lenovo support.

Answer:Lenovo Think Pad x230 and mSATA SSD

Hi, odessit

This should be possible. There is a slot for an mSATA drive in the X230, as shown here. Also shown in that link is that an mSATA is a user-replaceable part. After purchasing your SSD, then all you will need to do is install it per the instructions here (pp. 70) Also, you will likely need to download this firmware update after installing the drive. This will allow the BIOS to recognize the SSD if you plan to use it as the C: drive of the system. The update can be found here.

Hope it helps,
Adam

Question: Lenovo X230 setup

Hi, everyone,A quick question. I have an x230 on the way and am looking to set up my workspace in a specific way. Here is what I want: an external monitor that will allow me to move the cursor from the laptop screen to the other monitor. So, in essence, a dual monitor set-up but with the laptop screen as one of the monitors. I would also like to be able to use a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse while in this set-up. Do I need the UltraSeries 3 dock, or something else? Thanks!Parker

Answer:Lenovo X230 setup

Hi, Parker

You should be able to accomplish this without a docking station. The X230 supports a dual independent display and has a VGA port and a Mini DisplayPort. So if you have a monitor with one of these connections and hook it up to your laptop, then it should work. You will need to make sure that you Extend the display and not Duplicate it. Duplicate will give you the same image on both screens. You can just use Win + P to set it appropriately.

As for the Bluetooth keyboard and mouse, you should have no issues here either. Provided Bluetooth is turned on in the system and you have compatible Bluetooth peripherals, it should work like a charm once they've been paired.

Hope it helps,
Adam

I have a Lenovo x230 laptop with an i7 processor that starts the second time. This means that when you first turn on, there is a black screen. The restart must be forced and then normally turns on. I tried to use an external screen, tricks with disconnecting the battery and pressing the switch, CMOS battery, RAM memory replacement - nothing did not succeed. On this motherboard, the service replaced the BIOS chips due to failure in the upgrade. They said that the computer would not work anyway. The computer, however, works, but after the second launch - which is annoying. I have updated the BIOS on my own, which did not solve the problem. Once the computer starts, it works very steadily and without problems. I have not found a similar case anywhere on the internet.

i have upgraded  X230 harddrive and installed OS from Backup, my fingerprint did work fine after upgrade for 3 month after that fingerprint just started giving error  E7210005 (cannot enrolluser, cannot update passport, cannot find finger print sensor), but in the device mananger panel it show that it is workng properly, when i open biometrics in control panel it shows that my device is not availabe.(i have also allowed fingerprint port in the bios). i reinstalled windows, update finger print drivers and software (from lenovo and also tried the ones from original manufacture-Authen tech). i tried to change the group policy setting, and also created new user wit admin privillages and also enabled all the sevice settings. but the problem error remains the same, it has been a moth now trying to search for solution but still nothing has come up. wat worries me is that the device manger shows that the FP device is working properly

Answer:Lenovo X230 FingerPrint Error

If you re-installed Windows and this problem still happens, I'd say there's a strong possibility that your fingerprint sensor has failed and needs to be replaced.  Even if the device looks OK in Device Manager, this really doesn't mean much.  All it means is that Windows can talk to the USB device that hosts the fingerprint sensor, but the fingerprint sensor itself could still be malfunctioning.

Some things that can help confirm hardware problem:
1.  Shut the system off, does fingerprint green LED flash slowly?  If so it means that the sensor contains some fingerprint templates so lets try to clear them.
2.  Turn the system on and press F1 to enter BIOS setup
3.  Go to the Security menu and choose Fingerprint, then clear the fingerprint sensor.  You should see a message about success or failure.  Failure definitely means HW problem.
4.  If you see a message about success clearing the fingerprint sensor from BIOS, then shut the system off again.  The green LED should not be flashing anymore because you cleared the sensor in BIOS.  If the green LED still flashes, then it means HW problem because the fingerprint templates were not really cleared.

So try the above steps to try to confirm the HW problem, or just call service in your country and request help.

Dear support, My Thinkpad X230 (NZD78MH 12.5", 3520M, 180GB, W7) recently started to frequently overheat. It happens during rather normal operation, such as browsing the internet or playing video on youtube. This causes the fan to run on maximum capacity and computer processes to slow down significantly.  As the image shows below, taken after playing a random youtube video, temperatures of ~103°C are typical.  Should I have it serviced? Please help. Best regards, Matthias

Hey everyone!I ordered a x230 a few weeks ago and i realized i need bluetooth! I know i can purchase a dongle for a few dollars but i rather keep my USB ports free.Anyone know where I can purchase a bluetooth card so i can install it myself? - Or is it advised not to do that. What do you think I should do?

Answer:Lenovo x230 missing bluetooth!

2 options come to my mind1) you can look for bluetooth expresscard (x220 has a slot, so I'm guessing x230 has it as well)2) you can put it in mini-PCIe slot (for the WWAN card or mSATA SSD), assuming it's empty now, ie. you purchased without WWAN

I've bought the Lenovo X230 with the broken battery (the PM showes 68% charging and no more, asks for the battery replacement). I've tried 3 different good-working batteries from X220 which were supposed to work on X230, but they don't. When starting the laptop with that battery, it stops with the information:" The battery installesd is not supported by this system and will not charge. Please replace the battery with the correct Lenovo battery for this system. Press the ESC to continue".  And after pressing the ESC key, it starts to work, but the PM still writes that the battery is not correct and it doesn't charge. What could it be?

Answer:Lenovo x230 battery problem

Hi,x230 doesn't support the batteries of old 29 series (x220 did). Only hw protected batteries 44 series are being supported by x230 (and 19+ series, external).Batteries of 29 series can only be discharged in x230.Try to perform the original (x230's) battery reset using Lenovo power manager feature.

I have a Lenovo ThinkPad X230 (which I love dearly) and have a few question about ports and booting.  I would first like to verify that the port on the left side of the laptop directly above one of the USB ports is indeed an ExpressCard 54.  I have searched the web, but have yet to find a definite answer, and my user manual simply stated "ExpressCard."  Furthermore, I would like to know if it is possible to boot an operating system from said port using an ExpressCard 34 SSD (64GB).  I have the intention of installing openSUSE 12.3 to the potential SSD and be able to boot from it.  I greatly appreciate any help.  I  would post an image of said port, but I am being told the image file is much too large.

Realized I posted this in the wrong place and it really belongs here I decided to look around to make sure my computer was even able to run an external GPU and found I have hit a wall. I flashed my BIOS to the newest version (like 2.67 or something?) but my TOLUD is 3.5 GB (dfa00000). I thought the BIOS update was supposed to fix this? I only have 8GB of RAM so the 16GB problem shouldn't affect me either? Anyone know what might be wrong? When reading some forums I saw that people who updated their BIOS were able to fix their problem as long as they only had 8 gigs of ram, which is why im confused I still have DFA00000. Will it still work regaurdless of this? I thought the update was supposed to fix this.

I have a Thinkpad x230 laptop and updated the bios through the lenovo tools. After the bios flash the computer would not boot. I have tried both FN-B and WIN-B keys while pressing the power button. The USB drives light flashes once when the power button is pushed, but nothing else. Under some conditions I get the laptop to beep 8 times (pressing two keys for a while as the power is pressed with no battery). Is there anyone with experience recoverying the bios on an x230? Any advice? This expensive laptop, one month off warentee, is now a brick. Thanks for any help!

Answer:x230 Laptop BIOS Recovery from Update Failure

Hi,

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

I?m sorry to hear that BIOS update failed in your Lenovo ThinkPad X230 and is not turning on properly now.

A failed BIOS update could have bricked the motherboard probably. Since it?s a BIOS chip failure, it would be difficult to get it fixed on your own since the BIOS is soldered to the motherboard. Sorry to hear that your system ran out of warranty.

Best Regards,
Mithun.

I'm on DSL today (1.5mbps) and that's way too slow to view those pictures.  Can you resize them or maybe just post in text what they say.

Even on my cable connection it would take a very long time to see those things. I can't tell if it's just gigantic images or a slow server on your end since I can't download them to check the sizes.

Hi all,Apologies if I've missed this elsewhere - new to the forums so still learning to navigate. As background, machine type listed below:X230 Laptop (ThinkPad) - Machine Type 2325, Model BA6As I see it I'm having two separate issues here but they may well be linked: Recent Windows 10 updates are making the taskbar fully ineffective - I note this is fairly common and have tried the powershell route to check updates to no avail; curious to know what the advice here generally is, if X230 is no good with Windows 10 or is there something specific I should be doing to rectify this. This weekend, my laptop has developed a habit whereby the sound and video playback stops working suddenly. On boot-up it's fine but after a while, I can't listen to music or watch videos at all. Bit alarmed about this but suspect it may be linked to the thunderstorm on Thursday (based in London...), given I woke up to realise the powerboard on my TV had also gone. My laptop is within warranty so hopefully if it's hardware related, I would hope this is covered - in truth, I was reassured about the Lenovo warranty but have never had cause to use it at home or work over the last 6 years of using Lenovos.Any help or guidance would be massively appreciated!Kind regards,Bal

I have a Lenovo X230, running Kubuntu 14.04. When I disconnect the slice battery at the bottom the system resets, it's very annoying. What's worse is that it seems like jostling the system, also can cause it to power cycle. I don't really have a need to remove the slice battery very often, but essentially if I put the laptop into standby, and put it in by laptop knapsack, the system is off after I get where I'm going. Thoughts? I saw somewhere that allegedly, when you unlock the battery, some thinkpad utility gets notified to switch the power, I wonder if the hotplug is a software only solution, and not doable in standby. Steve Ramage

I have a 4 year old Lenovo Thinkpad X230 computer.  Since I upgraded to Windows 10 (two years ago?) my computer has randomly shut off with no warning.  There doesn't seem to be a pattern with regard to when or how this happens.  The computer starts normally every time.  This can happen upwards of 5 or 6 times in an hour (although sometimes it can go several days without shutting off). In the last year (since June 2016), the computer has been evaluated by three different technicians on three different occasions (June, October, January).  Each found no hardware issues, no issues with fuzz/dust, no obvious software issues, no malware or other viruses.  Personally, I have explored the answer on the internet and fiddled with the settings relating to sleep mode (among other suggestions) and nothing seems to have worked.  I recently was advised to revert to the original windows 10, undoing all the updates and additional installations that I've put on the computer.  I did this, and miraculously it helped (although it still shut off twice since then.  This was in February).  In the last two weeks, I was forced to upgrade back to normal and the problem has returned.  Additionally, the first person who looked at my computer (back in June 2016), told me that this was aparently a common problem with Windows 10 and that the only way to fix it was to revert to Windows 8.   I would like to not have to do this, if poss...
