X1 Carbon (20A7) SSD upgrade to 512GB/1TB: which harddisks work?

Question: X1 Carbon (20A7) SSD upgrade to 512GB/1TB: which harddisks work?

I wanna upgrade my SSD Disk from 256GB to 1TB (if possible, otherwise 512GB).Is there a 1TB option that works? If so, which model?Furthermore: reading this threat I found that the 512GB drives from Samsung (04X4405) and Toshiba (04Y2163) should work. HOWEVER: I cannot find these drives in ANY online store in Switzerland. What's their original model number (the numbers mentioned seem to be Lenovo-internal part numbers). To be specific: would this drive work?:http://www.microspot.ch/msp/de/harddisks-laufwerke/ssd-solid-state-disc/samsung-950-pro-mz-v5p512bw-...Thanks for your help. Highly appreciated.

Preferred Solution: X1 Carbon (20A7) SSD upgrade to 512GB/1TB: which harddisks work?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: X1 Carbon (20A7) SSD upgrade to 512GB/1TB: which harddisks work?

Samsung 950 pro will not work if you got x1 Carbon 1 gen to 3rd gen since 950 drive uses NVMe technology and PCie 3.0 which the laptops do not have gen 3 has got PCIe 2.0 and no NVMe support so answer would be no if you got one of these generations.

Hi, I have a 2nd gen X1 Carbon (Type 20A7) that I bought about 3 years ago. I bought it configured with a 256GB SSD, but I'm quickly running out of space and would like to upgrade the drive. I have a few questions about this: I believe this generation of the X1 Carbon came with a max SSD size of 256GB, but does the system/motherboard, etc. support larger sizes? Is there a limit? I'm aiming for either 512 GB, or possibly 1 TB.Will the size of a new drive I choose impact speed/performance in any way?Lenovo doesn't seem to sell a 512 GB drive or larger drive for this system. Can I use a non-Lenovo one (i.e. bought from Newegg, Amazon, etc.)? I searched around on the Lenovo forums and it sounds like it's a stanard M.2 drive in the 2nd gen X1 Carbon, so should I be fine as long as I get an M.2 drive?M.2 drives have a few different connector types: B, M, and B+M. Does anyone know which connector type I need to get for the 2nd gen X1 Carbon?I'm planning on cloning my current drive onto the new larger one. What kind of adaptors, etc. would I need to do this? Also, I've never cloned a drive before so please excuse me if this is a dumb question, but are there any issues cloning a smaller drive to a larger drive (i.e. the system only recognizing 256GB on the new larger drive)?Any other things I should keep in mind? Thanks in advance!

Answer:X1 Carbon Gen 2 (Type 20A7) SSD Upgrade

Lenovo lists 512GB drives as available, but there is no motherboard limit.  On that model, you need one that is described as SATA-3 (not NVMe) and size 2280.  Drives have B + M Key.  Not Lenovo drives should work, but I always suggest checking the seller's return policy in case of problems.

See title.

Error message:

0x80004005 - 0x20004
The installation failed in the SAFE_OS phase with an error during INSTALL_RECOVERY_ENVIRONMENT operation

Can't figure this one out. Searches mention hardware incompatibilities (fingerprint scanner, etc...), but no documented solution seems to be working for me so far.

Ideas?

Thanks.

Hi, can anyone give me a definitive answer to this question? I have a SSD drive which Windows reports as being 215GB in size in my X1 Carbon model 20A7. I need to upgrade it but am getting mixed messages from information on this topic in the forums. What's the largest capacity I can have? Is there a list of specific, Lenovo approved products I can/must choose from or can I buy any 2.5" SSD drive from any manufacturer? Thanks

Answer:Max size SSD for X1 Carbon 20A7

Hello and welcome,

Your X1 doesn't support 2.5" drives.  It uses an m.2 SSD in 80mm length IIRC.  Here are some references that should help you track down a compatible drive:

Product PSREF:    http://psref.lenovo.com/Product/158

Base specification:  http://psref.lenovo.com/PSREFUploadFile%5CSys/PDF/ThinkPad/ThinkPad%20X1%20Carbon%20(2nd%20Gen)/Thin...

Hardware Maintenance Manual (for instructions on replacing the SSD):  Hardware Maintenance Manual

Parts list (for researching specs and compatible drives):  https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/products/laptops-and-netbooks/thinkpad-x-series-laptops/thinkpad-x1...

and https://download.lenovo.com/parts/ThinkPad/x1_carbon_gen2_fru_bom_20150616.pdf

Please double check that I've linked 20A7 info.  It was a bit of an Easter-egg hunt.

Hello I have a Gen 2 X1 Carbon which is attached to the OneLink pro docking station. The docking station has two Eizo CG 243W 24 inch screens attached. Unfortunately, sinve about a month (and about two months out of warranty...), the system sort of freezes after it's been used for a few hours. The freeze looks such that the principal monitor goes black. The system still reacts to mouse movement, but not to keyboard input (ctrl-alt-del). I checked the various windows logs and cannot find anything wrong. I am suning Windows 10 (pre creators update). Anybody have an idea what this could be caused by, any help greatly appreciated! regardsChris

I always suggest running a memory test first, although on this machine, memory cannot be replaced.

Answer:512gb SSD compatible with original X1 Carbon?

Hello,

It might be helpful if you were to post the machine type for your ThinkPad X1 Carbon.  It will be on a label on the bottom of the unit, and read similar to 1234-ABC.  With that information, forum members will be able to look at the exact specs for the X1c and be able to suggest what upgrade options are available.

I would like to increase my SSD to 512 GB, and have read some of the dated posts on the subject here. Considering the high cost of my X1 Carbon 2nd Gen that I purchased just over a year on this website I am finding the help from Lenovo outlining an upgrade path from the base 256 MB SSD exceedingly under-whelming. Having got that off my chest I have determined that:- My current drive is an Intel Model SSDSCKHF240A4L- Its form factor is SATA 80mm M.2 NGFF compatible (2280)- A 512 GB unit, a Crucial Model # CT500MX200D6 (http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820148954&nm_mc=OTC-sho6b0tCA&cm_mmc=OTC-sho6b0... seems to fit the bill. Can anyone offer any comments on suitability of this item. Thank you, Martin

The Laptop worked fine with Windows 8, but upgrading to Windows 10 - I got the yellow warning triangle for the Graphics driver. Even I got the yellow triangle in device manager the build in screen works ? but I use the laptop both during travel and my work disk ? so I also use a Lenovo port expander and when it is connected, I have no information on either screens.Using any driver from Lenovo support/download site will give this problem. Only if I manually download Intel Graphics HD driver 10.18.10.4242, does it work. But it only works for a short time, then either Lenovo/Windows/Intel do a automatic driver update and I am back to the non working driver again.

Answer:graphics problem Carbon X1 20A7

Hi bjarnep,

Welcome to Lenovo Forums!

Few of the drivers won?t work after the update of windows 10 but when you roll back to the earlier version it works and the same thing happened with my laptop too but to stop the updates what I did was, I just changed the windows update settings and now my system is working fine with no issues.

You can do this too, roll back to the earlier version in which the graphic driver works through device manager, so once you roll back to the earlier version go to windows update settings and click on advance settings and check the option defer upgrades.

Please let me know whether the above steps helped you.
Thank you, have a good day.

Prior to this problem the machine was running fine, there were no major updates that I recall, I certainly did not do any firmware updates for example, probably only Windows 10 automatic updates. So when this first happened there was a blue screen. The first few times it started booting windows and blue screened before reaching the login screen - now I can't even get the screen to come on, not even bios, just the following.. When I press the power button the keyboard backlighting and LCD Fn keys appear. The screen does not appear to start. Sometimes the machine stays like this for about a minute then switch off, sometimes it seems to reboot endlessly. When it is rebooting the power button flashes 3 times. I have tried the following with no success:Running on AC and no AC.Charging for a day.Letting the machine sit for at least a week off the charger.Holding the power button for 3, 10, 20, 30 seconds, etc..Pressing the power button multiple times.Pressing the reset button with a paperclip.Pressing the F1, F12, delete keys immediately on powerup, etc..  Any suggestions? I haven't opened it up yet, but I am comfortable doing that.

My X1 Carbon was working fine, but one day the sound just stopped working.  I restored my image back to the Windows 8 stock image, and still not sound.  I tried re-installing Windows 7 from scratch, still no sound. I called into Lenovo, as the machine is only 4 months old.   The support rep said that they would do a "courtesy onsite visit exception" since this was my first warranty claim and that a lenovo tech would call me to arrange to have the machine looked at and the part swapped.  Apparently Lenovo only includes depot (ship your computer away) warranty support if you want their factory service. After waiting a week without hearing from anyone, I called back into the helpdesk with my ticket reference number.   The guy i was speaking to this time said that there were no notes on the ticket that i gave him and that the call was closed.  He also said that Lenovo no longer gives the "first time courtesy onsite exception" and that I would have to ship the machine back and be without a computer for 2 weeks! Good job lenovo.  You rock.  My first and last Lenovo.   Dell knows how to "DO" enterprise.  These guys do not.

Answer:X1 Carbon 20A7 No Sound through speakers

In Belgium it took 5 days to pick up my machine, repair it and get it back. But 2 weeks is still reasonable for a repair at the depot. This will require a motherboard swap. It is possible you maybe accidentally bent the connector on the inside. I once had this exact same problem on a different laptop. It happens.

I apologize if this is buried somewhere on the forum. I searched for hours, really, but could not find anything exactly relating to this. After months of "Upgrade to Windows 10" pop ups I finally did it. On Windows 7 I was able to change my battery capacity to 100% before I left for a business trip then change it back when I returned home. Now I can't find where to do that and it won't charge above 46%. I've tried downloading the Lenovo Power Manager as one post suggested but it doens't have the seperate "Power" menu item as the instructions displayed. I've tried uninstalling the Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery as another post suggested but that didn't help either.I have this option after upgrading my Ultrabook Yoga 2 to Windows 10. The Enegery Manager remained loaded. I simply want the same control over my battery on my X1 as I have on my Yoga. Can anyone help me?Thanking all of you in advance,Clare

Answer:Cannot charge battery to 100% on X1 Carbon (20A7) ...

I'm just going to throw this out there, no guarantee that your system has the exact setup as mine or that I am understanding your issue completely: I have a Lenovo Settings app in my Windows menu; within that settings application there is a battery section, at the end of this section is a battery gauge reset. I would start there to recover your battery threshold. Hope this helps.

Several of our 2nd gen/20A7 carbons have lost their circular rubber feet on the bottom. All the units are less than a year old but Lenovo has told me that this wouldn't be covered under the warranty. Not a big deal, but I'm having an impossible time finding the feet to buy on my own. They aren't listed on any of Lenovo's part lists for the X1 and I've only seen feet for the X220/230 units on 3rd party sites. I'm hoping someone on the boards here is familiar with the part. Thanks

Lenovo did end up shipping me replacement feet under warranty, which was a very nice surprise. If anyone has a similar issue and runs across this thread, the part number for the replacement rubber feet kit is HT096. As of writing this I wasn't able to find any references to that number other than on the paperwork with the shipment, but it may just be a new PN.

Well, I got my new X1 Carbon. Dumped Windows 8 and re-installed Windows 7 SP1 from scratch. There is a problem with the Realtek sound drivers. If the volume is above 30 (or so), the sound cuts in and out. The Windows Startup sound never plays right. Play any source and if you turn the volume up, the sound cuts in and out like a bad cell phone call. BUT, uninstall the Realtek sound drivers (6.0.1.7188) and let Windows install its base HD Audio Sound driver and all is good. I also tested the master Realtek drivers R2.73 and still the same problem.  It is like when the digital signal is too strong, whatever converts it to analog gets overloaded and cuts. Has anyone encountered this problem ? I see many other issues with the sound on the new X1...

We just got in our first of 7 x1 carbons (20a7) and im am trying to prepare our imaging enviornment to handle the new model. We have included ethernet extender (FRU 04X6435) which works fine in windows but when pxe booting i can see the MAC address and it waits for DHCP (the link and activity light on the extender do flash) after a few seconds we get a PXE-E53: no bootfile message and then get dumped back to the boot menu. I can pxe boot other machines off the same ethernet jack at my desk. Other laptops x230, t430s, all no problems.I have  tried UEFI/legacy boot  on both and on legacy only neither change the outcome. Since we are not using a usb adapter (this is the extender cable on the new x1s) i have not touched the usb settings. I have searched aroudn and found the threads of the older x1 carbons that used the usb 2.0 adapters but nothing on this new extender and it seems in those cases people were getting into the pxe environment and then having driver issues. I am not even getting that far. Our pxe enviornment (WDS) is setup to require a press of f12 on the client to actually boot and i never even get prompted for f12. Im really not even sure im getting DHCP right other than any other machine i plug is works fine. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks,Eric

Why are only W540 and W541 listed as the supported models? Are you saying it will work with X1 Carbon as well? What kind of devices can you use once that driver is installed?

Dear community, I have this rather special issue that I would like to ask for your assistance with. The case: I have a Lenovo X1 Carbon 2nd generation (20A7) running Windows 10 x64. One day, the touchpad stopped working, but initially by making the cursor jump around the screen when I used the touchpad and later with no response at all. Currently, neither the touchpad or the trackpoint work and only when combining all of my effort and luck (emphasis on the latter) I can get a response. For instance, I recently had luck reinstalling the UltraNav driver which made the touchpad respond, though rather "patchy", but only until I restarted the computer. The background: I bought the laptop while living the United States but have since moved to Denmark where I cannot use what remains of my warranty. I tried calling the Lenovo callcenter and an employee suggested that I enabled the touchpad in the BIOS and reinstalled the driver, but when that did not work, he fell short on advice. It seems that those guys are primarily there to help old people create a password and what not. The twist: I am aware that one excellent possible solution to my issue is that I can do a clean install of Windows on my device. However, I currently have a limited use version of some very expensive software installed and I need that in my daily work and cannot get a new version right away, so doing that would set me back quite a lot.&nbs... Answer:Lenovo X1 Carbon 2nd 20A7 touchpad not responding

Hello and welcome,

It seems that you're leaning toward a software rather than a hardware problem.  You might try booting a live Linux USB flash drive to verify that the hardware works.

It's typical for ThinkPads to have international warrantees.  Have you verified your specific coverage?   SUPPORT above, then International Services in the Warranty and Repair drop-down.

If your machine is eligible for local warranty service they will probably reinstall the OS as a diagnostic - and possible repair - effort.  If you can isolate to a hardware issue as suggested above you might avoid that step.

Hi can someone give advice if this is a screen default and will it need replacing?

The vertical dark band has been visible since purchase date and is always present.
It is 1cm in width and at the center of the screen. It appears darkest at the bottom and gradualy extends to the top of screen. It doesnt flicker (none that I can detect).

Is a known problem with the x1 20A7 touchscreen display?

Any opinions much appreciated.

Cheers, Ili

Hi, three weeks ago I got a new thinkpad x1 carbon touch, it was perfect, last few weeks I was working normally and left my laptop in my office working, where I left the office for several min's and when came back I found that my laptop is hanged showing the blue screen, I waited for several minutes and then pressed the power button, after that I powered it on but the he light surrounding the power button and the keyboard backlight turns on for about half a second before turning off again and it keeps going like that. I tried the reset button (hole) but same problem, I tried to call the service center but they just pass me to other offices and there is no help. I have three years warranty but can't figure out how this will be useful.so, if anybody got a solution for my problem, please share it with me. Thanks, best regards

Hello,

I'm finding a lot of difficulties in fixing my fingerprint sensor. The day I got my X1 carbon type 20A7 from the support center and the person who reinstalled all my softwares failed to install properly. I am unable to uninstall/install or run the Fingerprint manager pro, the driver is not recognizing my laptop. The following steps were attempted but with no success:1. Activated through Bios2. Further installments at the online support center
3. Updated the device manager4. Attempted the Sign in option (PIN)
5. I restored my sytem as wellPlease advise,

I have looked through the community and support forums but I am not able to locate a posting on how to replace a keyboard on the Lenovo X1 Carbon Thinkpad Type 20A7 - 002FUS. Does anyone know if there is video or instructional reference material to provide guidance on how to replace the keyboard on an X1 Carbon 20A7 Model Type. In most cases I see reference to replacing the Adaptive Keyboard but my case requires the entire keyboard replacement.  As much as I would like to see instructions, if not available, I'm sure I can figure it out on my own and will post a video or instructions to the community if allowed.

Hey Lenovo, I'm writing because I have not been able to solve my Wi-Fi problems. The Intel Wireless AC 7260 is very unstable and does not update properly. I am about 10-15 feet away from my router, which normally is fine, even for my Galaxy Neus 5, but speed drops are detrimental to my usage. Often, it'll fluctuate between 3-5 bars, and occasionally drop connection completely. Here are things I've tried: -Update drivers (I am currently using 16.6.0.8, which allows me to connect. However, when I try to update to 16.10.0.5, it won't actually update, but rather it stays at 16.6.0.8. So that being said, I found a direct update installer as opposed to the Lenovo update software and was able to install it. Not surprisingly, it didn't allow me to connect to my router whatsoever. It would say that the router is not compatible, and I would have to roll-back my driver to 16.6.0.8 in order to gain internet access.)-Change power settings to maximum power.-Unselect allow to turn off wi-fi when low on power.-Installing drivers version 17 and 16.5.-Uninstalling drivers completely, reinstalling.-Restarting the computer.-Already uninstalled Norton-Running Lenovo's system update-Windows update-Firewall exceptions  Additionally, I should mention that I'm 10-15 feet away through a wall. I am positive that it's not a router issue, as I have been using this router for about half a year prior to receiving my Lenovo X1 Carbon. I am using Windows 8.1, 64 bit. Another thing I shoul... With Windows 8.1 and the X1 Carbon 20A7 the startup screen is instantaneous. The function keys are adaptive so the F1 key is not lit. Getting into the Bios was important since the Intel RapidStart was enabled and this would interfere with the Lenovo Power Management and make the X1 not wake from sleep without being plugged into the AC connector. I finally found after lots of asking and looking that holding down the Power Button for ten seconds when the machine is off will make the X1 boot into the BIOS (technically UEFI) screen. Then I was able to disable Intel RapidStart. I could not find this in the manual.

Fingerprint reader was working perfectly fine but I couldn't get it to work with my domain account. After trying some troubleshooting, there was a suggestion to delete the drivers and reinstall it. So I go into device manager and uninstall the fingerprint reader drivers. The problem is now I can't find the fingerprint reader driver! It's not in the lenovo driver page.. I tried Windows drivers update and everything else but still not working. Where do I download the fingerprint drivers???

I had to reinstall my laptop with Windows 10 (not upgraded from Windows 8, full & clean Wnd10 install) and unfortunatly the adaptative keyboard doesn't work when resuming a (shallow or deep) hibernated session. Not having Fx keys forces me to restart Wnd and lose my session. Is there some drivers to install? X1 Carbon (20A7) bought in Nov 2014.

So I got a recent update on the 30th November 2014 in regards to updating the synaptics software and some other optional updates. Since then, after the updates, my trackpad has been acting up. I can't use it as smoothly as I was just a week ago. When I'm trying to drag files from the  right to left and vice versa its super slow and gets stuck. Is there an updatre fix for this. It's getting quite annoying actually.

I attempted to update the BIOS on my X1 Carbon type 20A7 using the bootable CD option. The previous bios was 1.09 and I tried to update to 1.26 (file gruj23us.iso).Booting from a USB gave me the error: ASSERT c:\edk2\MdePkg\Library\BaseLib\String.c(166): String != ((void *) 0) and then the update froze. The machine will no longer boot from the hard drive. However, it will still boot from USB.  Is there any way to get a working BIOS back on this machine? Has anyone else seen this error when doing a BIOS update?

The Thinkpad referenced above is equipped with a HDMI interface. During a test to directly connect a LCD projector or an external LCD display or a TV via an HDMI cable, I found that no picture appeared neither on the projected screen nor the display not the TV (the external screens stay black). Trying to connect via a ?Lenovo HDMI to VGA Monitor Adapter? and using a VGA cable resulted in the same (at least on the projector). What was done:On the X1, expand or change screens via Win+P  --> external projector, display or TV remain black (do not seem to receive a proper signal) while the X1 seems to recognize that an external display is connected (it correctly identifies the external screen in the screen settings). The X1 is on the latest patching level (according to Lenovo System Update), all drivers installed. Patching the latest Intel Graphics 5000 driver did not work (it says its a vendor specific driver).Even a dedicated installation of the external display driver on the X1 did not help or change anything.I also tried different HDMI cables, no change. I am lost of further ideas. Your help is much appreciated. Thanks,TonySt

Hello all,I recently received my new X1 carbon touch and am satisfied with most of it and the capabilities it has. At office, I connect my laptop to a larger screen and bluetooth keyboard and mouse for better control and better work experience. I use Logitech laser MX that I have since long time ago, at home I use a smaller logitech bluetooth mouse as well.I'm experiencing lags, after using the mouse (and keyboard) for few seconds, If I give it few seocnds I can work again for a minute or two, but for the long run it's really inconvenient. Sometimes the mouse will disconnect after couple of minutes and will not return to work until the computer will sleep and wake up again. I do not like to spend a free USB port for another keyboard since there are only 2 now. Please help!Ilan

Answer:New X1 Carbon touch 20A7 bluetooth issues (Lag and disconnecting and maybe more)

Hi Llan,

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

I?m sorry to hear that Bluetooth in your Lenovo ThinkPad X1 carbon is frequently getting disconnected.

Try unchecking "Allowing the computer to turn off this device to save power" in Device Manager->Bluetooth Radios->ThinkPad Bluetooth 2.1 with Enhanced Data Rate->Properties->Power Management.

Try checking with replacing the new battery in the keyboard and mouse.

Hope this helps!

I installed updates on my X1 a few days ago, including the updated driver (17.12) for the Intel Wireless-N 7260 wireless adaptor. Following this update, my wireless stopped working after the laptop woke from sleep. I would have to reboot to get it to work again. I ended up rolling back to the previous driver (via Device Manager) and this seems to have sorted out the issue. I am currently on 17.0.5.8. Intel's forum has a whole discussion going on this issue with the 7260 adaptor and it seems to be ongoing. Their current suggestion is to upgrade to the latest driver (17.12!), but funnily enough this is what caused the issue for me in the first place. Something else I noticed after running updates is that my Logitech mouse and keyboard with unifying receiver started acting erratically, with the connection seeming to cut out constantly. I was wondering if this was related to the wireless driver issue. So far they have been fine since rolling back the driver. I thought I would post this here in case anyone else had a similar issue.

I am running 17.12 and I am having no issues at all.I disabled Wake On Magic Packet and Wake On Pattern Match. Then suddenly it detected my school network. Maybe this helps you as well. It refused to detect my school network before I did this. Not sure if it is related. It seems odd though as this has nothing do do with stability.

Very very furstrating... I barely have this laptop for a year now and this is the second time it's happening. The first time it happened it's Oct 4th 2014, I was at Vancouver International Airport waiting for my flight leaving for Taiwan. It's the exact sympton this time, first, it would boot into windows, but within 10~30 seconds, it would blue screen and then restart itself. Repete a few time then upon pressing POWER button, the keyboard would just keep flashing. After landed Taiwan, first thing I had to do was to find a Lenovo Support Tech Center to get this thing fixed, not the greatest way to start a vacation. Later I found out there's a batch of second generation with motherboard issue that's causing this. So my unit was fixed within just 3 days and no charges of course.Just half a year later, now it's doing the same thing agian. I'm very disappointed at Lenovo's quality now, people kept telling me how THINKPAD is no longer the rock solid IBM quality it used to be, now I started to believe it.Anyone out there with the same issue?

Answer:Lenovo X1 Carbon 20a7-002jus not booting/bluescreen

Hard Reset for X1 Carbon ThinkPad....Best Regards... As you troubleshoot the X1, you may encounter an issue where the system will not turn on or boot Windows properly. In the past, one troubleshooting method was to pull the battery and all power from the system and depress the power button for 1 minute; since the battery is located inside the X1 carbon and cannot be removed, we recommend the following procedure:1) Shut the system completely down (using the Shut Down icon on the desktop) or depress the power button for 10 seconds2) Use a paperclip, toothpick or other small object to depress the Reset Button (you will feel a slight click) found in the hole to the bottom right of the main fan exhaust on the bottom of the system.3) After several seconds remove the tool you used to depress the Reset Button4) Press the power button to start the computer normally

Hi, During my visit to US in January and February 2014 I purchased the X1 Carbon 2nd Gen (Type 20A7). I got back to south Brazil where I live, it worked fine until October 2014. Suddenly the X1 Carbon didn't boot anymore and the backlight keyboard keep flickering. I realized it was a known issue and several customers had the motherboard replaced or even the equipment replaced.  I planned to reach the US customer service in a future visit to the US but I could not travel to the US from that time, so I tryed to reach the Lenovo customer service in Brazil and check with them to pay for the service and parts replacement so I could have my X1 Carbon working again. I called and told the problem, they said it was possible to fix and they would send me a budget proposal in 4 work days. The customer service took about two weeks to get back to me and surprisingly the budget I received was of U$ 3,650.00 which is the cost of a new X1 Carbon in Brazil ( I paid U$ 2,180.00 in the US for the top version). I am very upset with Lenovo, I lost all the confidence I had to the brand. My only hope is that a senior executive of US Lenovo headquarter would take this matter and help me get my machine fixed or replaced, even for a reasonable value as I could not use it since October 2014.I really do not have much hope that this will help, I am sure it would be different if I have had the opoortunity to get back to the US just after the problem arose but it is so sad, I was ve... But when I try to connect it using the Displayport on the dock I am unable to connect and windows seem to be unabe to see the monotor. I have tried 3 differnt cables and the came thing happens. I am able to connect to other monitors using DVI from the Onelink dock just not Displayport.

Answer:X1 Carbon 20A7 - Unable to detect monitor on Oneli...

Hello, what version of Windows do you use? I have upgraded to Windows 10 some time ago and i too have issues with the dock. For me the monitor is detected properly, but the audio over DisplayPort does not work. As for your problem, a possible solution could be to install a driver for the dock. It may be downloaded via System Update or from the product page:https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/documents/pd029981 However, there is no driver for Windows 10 yet.

Hi, I have a thinkpad X1 carbon 2014 (20A7) and its not playing audio over HDMI, I have tried the following: 1. Uninstall and reinstall display and audio drivers, this did not help. (although after i uninstall the display drivers i do get the option to play audio over HDMI in windows playback dialog box, otherwise i dont get any option for it to play audio over HDMI in that section) (also note i propperly uninstalled my display drivers using DDU, still no help). i also used an older version of the display divers, it did not help. 2. I used 2 HDMI cables and 2 TVs, still nothing. 3. you may think my laptop is faulty at this point but no, i booted into ubuntu and it worked fine without any issue, flawless audio playback without a hitch. FAQ:Q: is it just the audio or the video is not working too.A: Just the audio, video is fine. Q: Is your tv being detected by the device manger.A: yes, but as a generic monitor, the tvs name dosent show up.Q: Have you tried turning it off and on again.A: Yes, several times Q: Have you reinstalled windows recently?A: Yes, i reinstalled about 2 weeks ago, before that it worked fine (although it has been a year since i used audio over HDMI)

Hi, my X1 Carbon (20A7) immedately does a hard reboot as soon as I try and play warframe - I can get past the launcher and the game loads, ready to play (if it didn't crash you'd immediately be able to move around/interact with things), when the machine immedately does a hard reboot - going to the "lenovo" screen and doing POST etc. This happens every time without exception. I am able to play other games successfully (e.g. KOTOR 1&2 - though these aren't as graphically intensive, obviously) I have done an extended hardware scan with no negative results. All my drivers are up to date, as best as I can determine - at least all the ones I've checked have been (graphics, audio being the obvious ones). I'm running fully patched windows 7. DxDiagSystem Scan Above paste-bin links set to expire in 1 month. Any assistance would be appreciated - I'm stuck in a hotel for a couple weeks! thanks, William  EDIT: I've also set the graphics memory to 512 (from 256) in the BIOS

i have another question for X1C. . I can add external portable hard drive to usb and it is accessed normally without issue. However, after a couple of minutes, I can no longer access the drive. The files still show in the folder. I need to remove the drive and then add it back again. Or I wait for a few more minutes the drive will work again then another several minutes become dysfunction. This drive has its own power source ,works for my old X100e and macbook air. Is it because problems for usb on X1c? Maybe I need to return it if that is the design.

Answer:X1 carbon(20A7) external hard drive stops being accessible

Do the problems you've described also occur when you plug the external drive directly into one of the X1C2's two USB ports? If they don't then that suggests a problem with the dock. (BTW what type of dock are you using?)

After updating the BIOS to 1.13 the X1 refuses to boot . After several attempts to diagnose the problem (trying to boot under legacy and uefi with various rescue pen drives) I doing a restore with the recovery media (created using the inbuilt software) but that didn't help, it just wiped my partitions and reinstalled windows (I'm assuming since I have no way to check at this point) but still refuses to boot. I can boot the windows rescue thumb drive under legacy though. After the update the screen was also corrupted, picture here http://i.imgur.com/ScfD1Uz.jpg.At this point I'm not sure what to do anymore, it seems that the BIOS update failed in some way or somehow broke something.

Answer:X1 carbon 20A7 won't boot after 1.13 BIOS update, ecreen also corrupted.

this seems to have caused uneven lighting in the LED display, very strange problem. You may need to get warranty service on it.

Good morning,I've been having this issue with my x1 carbon laptop where it is acting as if I'm pushing buttons on the adaptive keyboard, though I'm not. For example, I have it set on the Function mode as default, and out of nowhere, the protector settings will pop up and start changing, then the radio options, then keyboard brightness, and will continually jump between these settings without any user input. From what I can tell, it won't stop without a reboot. Any suggestions? I've tried off wifi, disabling the biometrics, changing settings in the adaptive keyboard settings interface, and no luck. I am running Windows 7 SP 1. Thanks.~ Chris

Looks like I've solved my own problem. There were drivers that needed updating that were not showing up in Windows updater. I stumbled upon the Lenovo updater and saw there was a USB Enhanced keyboard driver that needed updating.. Since doing that yesterday morning, I haven't had any issues. ~CSW

I just gout a new X1 carbon this week - so far I'm not too pleased. The form factor of the laptop is awesome and I don't really find a lot of usability issues like others do - however I'm a network engineer and I tend not to use a lot of productivity apps - more web browsers, terminal emulators, etc.. My machine is a 20A7, I5-4220, 4GB, no touchscreen running Win 7 Pro x64. So I'm wondering if anyone has ran into any of these issues: Random freezing - Sometimes while using the X1, the machine will just freeze for a few seconds, or just freeze alltogether. Windows is updated to the hilt, and any drivers that were avialable from Windows Update have been downloaded. My next step is to download every updated driver from the manufacturer and load those out.BSOD - It BSOD'ed yesterday while sitting idle. Something about a driver power failure and the event log reported that the system had rebooted from a bugcheck -  0x0000009f (0x0000000000000004, 0x0000000000000258, 0xfffffa80036dc660, 0xfffff80000b9c3d0). USB Freezing - I was using a Belkin USB->Serial adaptor I've used for a year now with my old T420s. that works perfectly. About 3 minutes into a console session with a switch the session just froze. I plugged the USB-> Serial converter into another port and didn't get the USB confirmation sound / popup on screen. Tried a flash drive, same deal. USB ports were dead until reboot. After reboot, same thing occured with USB->Serial adaptor. I ha... Read more

We received 2 brand new X1 Carbon (type 20A7) models and neither have been able to detect the Gobi 5000 WWAN card (Sierra Wireless EM7355, Lenovo Part# 0C52902.)  The X1 Carbon's are running the latest drivers (including BIOS update), Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 8.1- it doesn't matter: They will not detect the WWAN card in the WWAN slot. Tried 2 different WWAN cards straight out of the box from Lenovo (these happen to be the Verizon variants, I don't have any AT&T ones handy) and it's like it doesn't even exist. Yet I can remove either Gobi 5000 card and install it into a T440s and it comes up without any issue. I've tried taking a working and activated Gobi 5000 card out of a T440s and putting it into the X1 Carbon, yet the X1 Carbon refuses to recognize the device exists in Device Manager. I spent about an hour on the phone with Lenovo tech support who ultimately told me my question was "Out of scope" and something they would not handle. The tech even agreed with my frustration that it's listed right on the **bleep** Lenovo product site: "Mobil [sic] Broadband: Sierra Wireless 7355 - Gobi 5000" and couldn't explain why A) It wasn't working orB) Why Lenovo feels a feature listed on their own marketing materials was "out of scope" for support. She also confirmed the part number is exactly the same and the T440s and the X1 Carbon use the identical part. The tech ultimately speculated that some type of magical "system board upgrade"... Hi,  I'm looking for a teardown guide for the ThinkPad X1 Carbon SecondGen, but i can't really find anything good. I've read the PDF from Lenovo, but I'd like to know how hard it is to change the keyboard bezel. The reason for the part change is switching from US keyboard to norwegian keyboard.  I know it is a FRU, but it should be possible to do it on my own. Anyone with experience? Here's the manual from Lenovo: http://download.lenovo.com/ibmdl/pub/pc/pccbbs/mobiles_pdf/x1carbon_2_hmm_en_sp40a26110_01.pdf N

Hi, I recently bought an X1 carbon and today after the laptos has been left for a while (2 weeks) maybe with the battery drained, I tried to boot and the only thing I get is flashing light on the power button and touch function pad too.Keyboar lights as well for less than a second and the thinkpad red light too. Tried to leave it charging for a while with no good result. Tried pressing the reset button in the back for 3 seconds and for 10 seconds with no luck. Any help? Thanks.Shame I only used for 2 months. So disapointed!!!! C.

Answer:Lenovo X1 Carbon 20a7-002jus Boot issue, lights flashing

I just have the same issue on my X1 Carbon, mine is 20A7-002WUS.Got it in May, being using it just fine, no dropped, it's been baby pretty much. I left Canada for Taiwan just yesterday for 3 month vacation...and at the aiport while I was waiting to board...it wouldnt boot up...landed in Taiwan like 10 hrs ago, gave it another tried, same disapoointed result, the light just kepts on flasshing. Very disapointed by Lenovo product this time. I got tired of having to purchase an Asus every 2 years, so i got the X1 carbon this time, since their legendary business laptop quality...but this is very disappointed. And on top of this, the HDMI would not export audio signal. THere's a post for that too, and Lenovo tech had pretty much being useless for it. I work in IT industry as well, pretty much all the standard troubling shotting i've done along with a few "tips" from Lenovo, NONE of them work. Very disappointed. To be honest, if it isnt i've just spent like two gram canadian dollars on it like 5 month ago, I would very much like to set this thing on fire atm.

Hi, didn't find any information if the PCIe connected 512G SSD Drive is capable of hardware encryption for use with Bitlocker. While it seems to be supported on the non-PCIe drives (OPAL 2.0) available for the 2015 X1 Carbon, is that also supported on the PCIe drive (MZHPV512HDGL)?  Thanks.

Answer:ThinkPad X1 Carbon (type 20A7): which Intel Dual Band Wireless-AC 7260 is compatible

Hello and welcome,

You've run into the BIOS whitelist.  A card must be a supported model (7260) AND have a Lenovo FRU number (04W3844 or 04X6007).  A "vanilla" 7260 won't pass the whitelist check and you'll get the 1802 error.

My X1 Carbon just keeps powering on and off continuously and there is no way of stopping it. It first started with the screen having some funny, shimmering, short horizontal coloured lines during boot up. Then, the keyboard and power button just kept blinking on and off. At first, the power button would blink 3 times in quick succession and then power on and off. Eventually, the laptop would turn off totally. But, when I pressed the power button to start up again, it went into this crazy cycle again. I've tried turning the computer off by holding down the power button, but it doesn't work. The first few times, the laptop would eventually power off, but now, the laptop won't power off at all. The power button now blinks once only on powering up and then the entire laptop turns off, but immediately it would start up again, and the cycle just keeps repeating itself and I don't know how to stop it. The LCD screen remains blank and doesn't seem to switch on at all. Does anyone know how to fix this probelm so I can use my laptop again?

Good day and welcome to the community.

I've not previously heard of the symptoms you're describing. Frustrating, I'm sure.
You might want to try pressing the emergency reset button in the tiny hole on the underside of the machine with a straightened paperclip. (See page 7 of the user guide)

I looked at the specs and both machines are pretty similar! Why wouldn't they offer a 512GB SSD option on the Lenovo LaVie Z? That's just dumb to max out at 256GB because I like the tablet usability of the LaVie but now will probably have to go with the Thinkpad Carbon X1 because it offers the 512GB. Any idea why they did this? Any other key differences in the systems that I'm missing that make the Carbon X1 that much more awesome?

Answer:LaVie Z versus Carbon X1 (gen 3) -- why not offer a 512GB HDD on the LaVie?

Price? The Carbon is marketed as a business class machine while the Lavie z is a consumer level Ideapad. For the most part, lenovo adds ~$300 to go from 256GB to 512GB, that would put the Lavie touch version at $2k! That's tough number to sell as a consumer laptop, especially one that's even blander in design than the Yoga line, has a Japanese layout keyboard and doesn't support 2 of the 4 "Yoga" positions. My >guess<? The current Lavie is more a market trial than revenue producer. There will be more models and likely more adoption of the weight reducing tech in future Lenovo models based on the current limited 2 models acceptance. I wouldn't be surprised at all if the next carbon had the shell of the Lavie with a Lenovo designed keyboard. If not for the flaws mentioned, I would probably be getting one.
