X1 touch pad & trackpoint not working

Question: X1 touch pad & trackpoint not working

I had a user complain of their mouse being frozen. At first I thought it was crashed but the keyboard is still working fine. With an external mouse connected the mouse would move on the screen. Is there a key combo that will disable both devices? I'm wondering if this was pressed. If I uninstall the drivers and software then the Touchpad and Touchpad only worked, when I reinstalled the drivers both of them again failed to move the mouse. It is acting as if they have been disabled. When I open the mouse properties in the controll panel and go to the UltraNav tab this is what I get

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

I just purchased a ThinkPad Edge 13 0196-3HM with Windows 7.I am happy with the product except the TrackPoint and Touch Pad do not work. A USB mouse and a BlueTooth Mouse work fine. From the initial startup there has been no life in either the Touch Pad or the TrackPoint.The device manager does not find the TrackPoint or Touch Pad.I've checked settings, the drivers and all appears OK. Anyone have a similar problem? or can anyone help? The trouble shooting on the Lenovo site has no answer I can find, the supplier advised "talk to Lenovo". Thanks.

Verify that the trackpad ribbon cable is full inserted into the socket. You'll need to remove the keyboard to check this. See the hardware maintenance manual.

Just received my 2014 X1C Touch.  I'm noticing that the sensitivity on the trackpad is uneven.   When I "point" towards the Left or Down, it takes a lot of pressure while the mouse pointer moves very slowly.  Moving to the Right and Up, feels normal -- i.e. right amount of pressure for right amount of speed. Is there anyway the trackpoint can be calibrated?

I?m sorry to hear that Touchpad is having sensitivity issue in your Lenovo ThinkPad X1 carbon.
 
To reducing the touchpad sensitivity, go to control panel and open mouse option and in that check for UltraNav menu in that, you can check the below image for setting on that.
 
Please click here to change the touchpad sensitivity.
 
If you unable to find the UltraNav option in your system then touchpad driver is not installed in your system, you have to download the driver from Lenovo drivers page.

it only does this sometimes which is why it's so annoying :/ So, I boot up & start using my laptop, trackpoint scroll (middle button) is working fine but then it just stops working after 5mins or 1/2hr it hasn't actually done this in over a month but today it did it & a reboot did not fix it   I've had 2 Lenovo Tablet PCs before this one & none of them ever did this

I know this is old post but...This sounds like a driver issue or a hardware issue. First verify your type of trackpad than download and reinstall the trackpoint software from Lenovo from here Drivers see if that helps. If this does not help this might be a hardware wear issue this laptops are 6 years old. I have one myself but I use Linux on mine.

Hello. I have a w520 and a problem. Sometimes trackpoint is not working, and sometimes after reboot it begin working again. But after time it cancel working totally. I change a keyboard to a new and trackpoint works for about two weeks and now it not works again (. I have traing reboot a laptop, but it did not help ( To exclude a software problem I load new windows from a DVD, but trackpoint continies not to work... For all time touchpad and keyboard and mouse works fine. Trackpoint for all time have enable in BIOS. Trackpoint keys are not working also. May be anybody have an idea what problem with touchpad I have? Thank you. Stas.

I just purchased an E430 and the "period" key was loose.  Upon receiving and replacing the new keyboard, the trackpoint and left/right clickers now do not work.  I've downloaded the latest UltraNAV driver and that did not work.  I've tried to access my Bios at startup but the F1 key does nothing when my system is booting up.  I know my F1 key works fine, as it enables my mute and Google chrome help when I use it normally.  Any suggestions?  I don't think it's user issue from the new install as every other key on the keyboard works just fine.  Thanks!

My Ideapad P400 Touch with Windows 8 is no longer responding to right side swipe (charms bar gesture).  All other touch screen functions and gestures still work normally, including the left side swipe to switch apps.  The screen still displays the 'touch feedback' dots when I attempt the gesture but no charms bar appears! I've tried recalibrating as well as removing calibration of touch screen, and tried various other troubleshooting procedures I found on this site, like uninstalling recent updates, etc... Finally I tried running Windows 8 PC refresh, which worked as it's supposed to so I got to reinstall all my software but didn't fix the missing charms bar! Has anyone had a similar problem with the touch screen right-side swipe and been able to fix it?  Any help would be greatly appreciated!   Thanks!cait

Drivers all show working properly. Not intermittent. Tried settings and no help. No response when touching screen at all. Can't calibrate. Bios has no update available. Nothing in manual under troubleshooting. Any quick fix suggestions have likely been tried, but open to all ideas. If all else fails, and assuming the digitizer is bad, what does repair entail and any rough estimate?Is there any recall? I see this issue on the forum a lot with not many folks getting it resolved.TIA!!

Have you tried booting the system in Recovery Mode (One Key Recovery), You're not going to Recover the system since your only going to check the touchscreen in that mode "Outside Windows"
 
See if the touhcscreen works there,
If Yes, I would suggest doing a factory Reset First Before jumping into a hardware Repair.
If No, Then I think you're correct with the digitizer.

My touchpad is not functioning properly. It suddenly would not allow right click function, and i no longer can scroll up and down. I have tried updating and restarting , it still has not worked. Also the right hand side of the touchpad seems stiff, it is not clicking as it used to. Please help, as i have no one hear or in my visinity who knows how to fix lenovo laptops.

My laptop automatically updated in Sept./Oct. It took about an hour and had multiple restarts, so I am assuming it was a Windows 10 update. I am not 100% sure though. I have a friends laptop that the synaptic touchpad gets extremely hot and PC doesn't reconize it. Vista 32 home basic, have downloaded drivers and to no avail. doesn't even recognize a mouse plugged into a USB.

My Ideapad S415 touch screen has suddenly stopped working.  I've had a tech connect to my PC and try a BIOS reload of default settings, plus unistalling all "HID" devices in Device Manager with no resolution.  I've also tried a system restore with no luck. The system properties does see the touch capability. Suggestions? Thanks.

First do a Power Drain 
     (If the battery is removable)
            Remove AC and Battery and hold the power button down for 15 sec.
               Turn the computer back on and see if the Touch capability is now detected under System Properties,
                  If not
         I suggest you contact Lenovo Technical Team about the Issue as this may be a device detection issue.

I've lost the use of my keyboard, but not the touch pad. Restarting and converting to table mode and back doesn't correct the issue. Thoughts? I'm not sur where to go from here. Could the keyboard be physically dead?

You should test the keyboard in the BIOS menu and see whether it works. 1) Press on the recovery button (next to the power button, you may need a small screwdriver). https://www.flickr.com/photos/lead_org/11617761143/in/set-721576390073780542) Then there is an option menu for entering recovery, bios, etc. https://www.flickr.com/photos/lead_org/14512183979/in/set-72157639007378054Use your keyboard and see whether it works in that option menu. If it doesn't work then it is a faulty keyboard.

I have the IdeaPad S510p touch, which seems to have a similar problem as other Lenovo models where the touch screen seems to stop working intermittently.  It seems to stop working after a while or after it has been sleeping.  It starts working again randomly.  I tried downloading a driver for a different model, but it didn't load or allow me to open it.  I just got this computer a few days ago.  I'm not sure if it is better just to take it back to the store, but I am concerned that this problem will exist even if I exchange it for a new one...

In the middle of using an app and using the touch screen. I searched all through settings and can't find anywhere to adjust its settings or anything. And in fact I saw that this computer "Has no touch/pen screen", which it does. Or it did until about an hour ago. I am relatively clueless but i'm learning. Hi, My G400s series touch screen laptop touch not working. It stops working just one month back. It was purchased around 16 months back. I have done all the trick which suggested on the forum by many users but all in vain. I have always updated with latest updates by Microsoft including Window 8.1/latest driver by Lenovo but I think this is not the issue with Windows upgrade because this was done months back and touch was working perfectly. If this is hardware problem the Lenovo should accept the fault and change the failure part free of cost or come up with some solution because many Lenovo users suffering with this problem. Kindly some one can suggest me where I should approach to get this rectify?

As per the query we understood that you are facing issue with touch screen not working in your G400s laptop.
 
Please confirm is the display appears on the screen; also check if the touch screen is damaged.
 
Also try to reinstall the display driver and touchpad driver to the latest version and check for the issue.

Ok, so I got my Yoga 2 Pro 5 days ago. It was been working great until today. I turned it on and I noticed that the on screen volume indicator was active and at 100%. I pushed and held the volume down button and the indicator went down but as soon as I let it go, it goes all the way back up to 100% volume as if a ghost is making it happen. The volume indicator will not disappear. So I thought that maybe I did something wrong. I restarted the computer and nothing changed. Here is what else I've noticed: Volume indicator stays on all the time and will not disappearOn screen touch keyboard is inoperable, comes up but goes down immediately.Touchpad is unresponsive and swipe gestures don't work on the touchpad.The on screen start button (on the windows taskbar) doesn't work. Is not clickable.When I open apps, they open minimized and start blinking orange on the taskbar.In my office documents, when I right click, menu immediately disappearsI uninstalled and reinstalled the audio and touchpad drivers. Didn't work. It seems that something is either being depressed or is hungup or conflicting. I can't figure out what it is. I haven't tried much else, so I don't know if other features aren't working.  This is driving me crazy. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

For a while now, I have wondered why the virtual buttons shown in the utility http://imgur.com/Lljj1Z7 don?t function as advertised. According to the utility, I should get a left click if I depress the left are of the touchpad, a middle click if I push on the bumps, and a right click if I depress the right half of the touchpad. In my experience, I get a left click regardless of where I depress the touchpad. The only exception is when I depress the bumps in the top middle of the touchpad?when I do that, the mouse enters some weird scrolly mode where I scan scroll stuff with the trackpoint. It definitely does not emit a middle click. But, more importantly, I cannot figure out how to get trackpoint mode to emit a right click. How do I get trackpoint classic mode to work? Is there a way to downgrade the drive or use a non-lenovo branded driver to get it to behave properly? Right now, I?m relying on an external mouse just to middle click and right click. I?m using Windows 10 b10240 and, as in the post?s title, my trackpoint driver is the latest listed on Lenovo?s support site (which I think WU actually installed for me)?19.0.12.61. Why don?t the virtual buttons work and are there any other workarounds that don?t involve using a mode other than Trackpoint Classic?

Seems to have partially fixed iteslf since Windows Update (WU) installed 19.0.16. Now the right half of my touchpad performs a right click when in TrackPad Classic mode. However, the supposed ?middle click? zone still does a weird scrolly mode instead of sending a middle click. Guess I still have to use an external mouse to accomplish a middle click when using Classic TrackPoint mode, but at least the situtaion is better than when I couldn?t right click with this mode.

I recently took my SL500 to a local repair shop to get that notorious left hinge repaired. After picking it up, at some point, I noticed that my TrackPoint wasn't working anymore. The TrackPad is functioning perfectly, though. I opened it up and looked at the connectors and all seems fine in there. I've also updated drivers. Any thoughts? I'd prefer not to sink any more money in this machine (e.g. buying a new keyboard) if possible. Thanks in advance!

Hi all, I have an E540 and Windows 8 (I also have Linux and the problem doesn't happen there, its just in Windows 8). I can use tap to click when I navigate with the trackpad. However, as soon as I start using the trackpoint, I can no longer tap to click. When I go back to using the trackpad, tap to click starts working again. I've tried fiddling with the settings in control panel, but haven't found anything to change it yet (tap to click is checked there)

I?m sorry to hear that you are facing the issue with Tack pad on ThinkPad E540.
 
Please go to control panel -- mouse ? UltraNav ? Track Pad setting and Check the box Enable press to select option.
If you are unable to find UltraNav option, the you have to install touchpad drivers for that.
 
Click here to check the track pad setting.

HiI bought an E520-1143 which was slightly water damaged, keyboard/trackpoint was not working and cable for touchpad+fingerprint reader was ruined from corrosion.  So i replaced the keyboard w/trackpoint and keyboard works now, but trackpoint doesn't. The cable for trackpad has not arrived yet so its unconnected. Currently running Windows 10, is there any way to figure out is this software or hardware related problem or does it require trackpad to be connected for trackpoint to work? Motherboard itself has no visible damage from water around three connectors under keyboard (Keyboard, Trakpoint & touchpad/fingerprint). There is nothing about touchpad or trackpoint listed in BIOS settings under Keyboard/Mouse. What i have done sofar was i installed "Synaptics UltraNav driver for Windows 8.1 (32-bit, 64-bit), 8 (32-bit, 64-bit), 7 (32-bit, 64-bit), Vista (32-bit, 64-bit), XP - ThinkPad" Version 16.2.19.14 - - - And this did not fix the problem Is there a specific Windows 10 driver available?

Hi  I just got my new T440 today. After the automatic installation of win 7 the trackpoint did not work. Then i looked in the  control panal -> mouse -> thinkPad and saw that both the trackpoint touchpad were enabled. In order to fix the problem I downloaded the latest ultranav driver -> uninstalled the old version -> rebooted -> installed the new version - > rebooted, but it still does not work. As far as I can see all the functionality (the different gesture commands) of the touchpad is working so I guess the ultranav driver is correctly installed.  Does any one have and idea what could be the problem? Thanks in advance!

Solved.  Found usable replies when I did a search using the correct spelling of "trackpoint" in this forum.  By pressing the ThinkVantage button and then checking input devices, I found the trackpoint to be disabled. Need to change it in the BIOS at startup.

anyone know the best software for my T21's trackpoint i cant seem to get the bottom button to act as a scroll wheel type thing pls help

Neither Touchpad/TrackPoint are working on my R60. I was using it fine about 2 hours ago. Then I drove home when it was in sleep mode, and since it hasn't worked. I have tried to install the latest drivers from System Update under the blue button and also from Lenovo and still didn't work. When I go to check and make sure they are enabled all I get is this:UltraNav has been disabled in BIOS.So when I go to BIOS, it says that it is automatic. There are only 2 options for them. Automatic and Disabled. So what the heck is going on here?Thanks,Mac

Welcome to the forum! Try reverting BIOS to default settings (F9 once you enter it and F10 to save and exit) to see whether that changes anything. Good luck and let us know.

Hi!First: this is no problem-request but a solution for everybody with the same problem. I had the problem, that TrackPoint scrolling did not work in some programs.There are some posts available about correcting this issue, but there seems to be a change in the driver, so there needs to be done some changes. I mainly will refer to this post from Elad Karako, because it has a list of programs, where scrolling does not work. This post, the same as others, recommends to edit the file TP4table.dat in the C:\Program Files\Synaptics\SynTP directory. I just updated my T540p with a 3-button touchpad and had the problem, that in some applications the TrackPoint scrolling does not work (Notepad++, Total Commander, ...)Unfortunately the rules did not work. But in newer drivers there is a further option available.The flags has been updated with the option16 Rule indicate the apply this to IBM Stick Scrolling when ScrollMethood is Synaptics.This means, that if the rule should apply to the scrolling done with TrackPoint, the flag needs to be increased by 16. I also had the problem, that the listed option WheelStd did not work in my case. After playing around I found out that Standard worked. So I updated the rules to the following and added them to the upper part of the file TP4table.dat: ; Process Explorer

I love my new lenovo E520But it comes to my attention that my trackPoint wont work. Before I go on, I must say that I am a computer technician and I am **bleep** good at what I do. You know something is wrong when I'm posting my problems here hoping that someone will help me out. A little about my  machine with the upgrades I have made: I5 @ 2.3GHz8gb HyperX memory60gb SSDWin 7 PRODrivers from windows update and the regulars from the lenovo support page (including ultraNav) So I go to the mouse settings in Control Panel and I click the UltraNav section and the who trackPoint section is grayed out. I put the taskbar icon and all the trackPoint is grayed out there too. I Have a second machine that is exactly the same as this with the same specs and it all works.Only difference is that since this is MY computer, I disabled the bluetooth radio, the wimax radio and the wan radio because a.)they take battery, b.)I am hyper sensative to the bluetooth radio. other than that, all the bios settings are the same. Uninstalled the hardware for the mouse, uninstalled synaptics and ultranav and finally the device itself, restarted windows with the generic ps2 mouse driver. still no. installed ultranav again. still no. the three buttons below the stick don't work at all either. Next on my list of attempts is this system update utillity from lenovo and then finally minixp to see if i even have functionallity from it and to make sure it's not a hardware ... z61t both the trackpoint and ultranav mouse pointer hung and stopped working.Both the Bios and the Thinkpad Config show status as Automatic for both Trackpoint and Touchpad, but when the Ultranav Wizard is started, an error message says "Trackpoint is disabled from Bios.  Please enable it from Bios or Thinkpad configuration utility".Have tried updating the driver (7/14/09) and resetting the Bios to defaults with no change.Battery failed yesterday, and the Bios flash does not allow updating without a charged battery. Could the problems be related somehow?External USB mouse does work.Where do I go from here?Thanks in advance for the help

Hi there, sorry to be a bother.Like the title says, my touch screen stopped working. I went on to my computer one afternoon and found my mouse stuck in the top left corner, fidgeting. This was what I was expiriencing. (My touch-screen still worked fine at the time, but I still couldn't do anything or control the mouse, but I could tell that it was still working and it still responded.) After a bit of time and a few restarts later, it went back to normal, but my touch-screen then stopped working. I'm used to the touch-screen working incorrectly occasionally, and much like the mouse thing, a restart or two helps.It has now been three days and my touchs-creen still does not work. I've tried many of the solutions found in these forums, but to no avail. I am running Windows 10 and have had this computer for 2+ years.  Thanks.

The touchscreen stopped working suddenly on my Envy TouchSmart Sleekbook 4-1115dx. At first i though it was like a normal failure and that will get fixed by turning the pc off or restarting so I did not pay attention to it until now that I had restart my pc multiple times. Currently running win10. I started to believe it was because of an update a few days ago since it was when the problem started but all drivers and everything is up to date. I have checked for the HID-compliant Touch Screen driver and had to  show hidden divices in order to find it. I cannot enable it and when i check in the properties the following message displays: "Currently, this hardware device is not connected to the computer. (Code 45)To fix this problem, reconnect this hardware device to the computer." I have no idea on how to connect or how it got disconnected. I come from a similar thread but did not solve my problem. I have been researching this for hours and have not found and answer. Help please!

Not only are "pen and touch" no longer in my control panel, HID-compliant touch screen is not in my device manager.  Needless to say, my touch screen is non-responsive.

I have a Lenovo s400 and the Touch screen is not functioning.  The details highlighted in the blog also describe exactly what happened to my computer - I updated to Windows 8.1, it worked intermittantly for a week and would cease to work after the computer slept for a brief time, then there were ghost taps in the top corners that were inceasant, then it no longer functioned at all.  The online support staff attempted all of the software updates to no avail.  I am looking for any type of help to resolve this problem.

Hello everyone, my touch screen on my lenovo ideapad z400 touch is not working anymore.  The only weird thing I remember is some ghost touchpoint on my screen. I've been looking for the answer to this issue, but it seems that Lenovo does not address this problem.  If someone has found the solution to this problem and wants to share it with me, I will be forever grateful.

My X220 tablet comes with pen and limited touch support with 2 touch points. I have no issues on windows 7 but on windows 8.1 it has changed to be working with only 1 touch point since some time that I don't remember exactly when. So that I can work with one finger only and 2-finger functions such as pinch to zoom are unavailable. My drivers are all uptodate. I think I should completely uninstall the related driver before reinstalling but don't know how to procede and couldn't find the solution. I tried uninstalling all HIDs through Device manager and one-by-one, specifically wacom device. when I uninstall it, I lose touch option completely. but reinstalling through Device Manager sounds like recovering exactly the previous faulty condition. Maybe there is a conflict with windows 8.1 like Microsoft Input Configuration Device which might be unlikely.  So is there any other way to have full wipe and clean reinstall of those touch screen drivers? I appreciate it if you put links to the drivers for me, if they are not available on Lenovo Support. Tell me if you had the same touch issue in Windows 8.1  and how you solved it. Thanks

Hi, I have a computer where the both the touchpad and trackpoint just stopped working. I can see it in the device manager, and it says it is working, but I get no response. If I look in the mouse options, I can see that the touchpad stands as activated, but at the same time it is grayed out. I can't deactivate it. The trackpoint is completely deactivated and grayed out. I have tried to remove the device and see is Windows reinstall it properly.I have downloaded and installed the latest driver fro both Lenovos supportsite and Synaptics.All so I tried to go into safemode. All the above with no success. I can plug in an USB mouse, and it will work fine. I need some help on what I can try, so I can get this to work.

There is a BIOS update that was released about two weeks ago that may be able to help the issue. This update can be found here. If that does not work, then the issue is likely hardware and the TouchPad will probably need to be replaced.

Hi, after getting my Lenovo Yoga 12 laptop back from Lenovo support, my trackpoint is not working anymore.I have tried installing the driver, but whenever I install it, the computer fails to boot properly (have to go through recover modus). Please help.

Is it showing in device manager? If so is it showing that there is a problem? Is the ultranav software working? If not you could try re-installing the ultranav software or rolling back the drivers if everything shows that it is fine. Good luck.

Hi, I've got this problem for a couple of days now, but I can't resolve it. I got this laptop since 2 weeks now, and everything worked fine, but all of the sudden I noticed my touchpad isn't working anymore. Already tried:Reinstalling the UltraNav driversPushing Fn+F8, as said in many cases, although this wasn't expected to work. I got aeroplane mode under Fn+F8.Opening the UltraNav settings, but I don't get the window as in this link. Instead I get this.Updating the BIOS.Check whether they might be disabled in the BIOS, but both the trackpoint and touchpad are enabled.Delete the device drivers and restart windows.Go to a previous recovery point on which it was known to work.Bring the windows back to factory settings, removing all files.So..But still: it doesn't work. Funny to see is that when I open the system tray icon setup, I can see the UltraNav tray icon and it says "TouchPad = Pointer, TrackPoint = Disabled". Could anybody help me with this?  Edit: while writing this message it mysteriously started working again after reinstalling Windows again and configuring the newest updates for Hotkey. Only now, this happened to me this afternoon as well, but it stopped working again after the external screen was detached and the usb of the wireless mouse was disconnected. Therefore I still post this message for it will probably happen again. Any help on how it could all have started? And more importantly: how it can be stopped?

Recently got a new Carbon x1, and everything was working fine, but once I closed the laptop and when I woke it up neither TrackPoint nor touchpad was working. Reboots didn't help. Tried installing Synaptics drivers - it said there was no device for update. Device manager detects the touchpad as Microsoft mouse with corresponding drivers (screenshot attached).  Also tried installing update for TrackPoint from the drivers list, it said it needed a reboot to install, after reboot there was an error window that suggested trying once again, several times I saw this message.Anyone have this? Are there any possible solutions?(Searched on the forum, but the solutions were not for my case or didn't work)P.S. It would be kinda stupid for a $1500 laptop not to work because of a touchpad

For some reason randomly when I turn on my computer after it gets done loading Windows XP (gets to the log in menu) my T60 ThinkPad Laptop's mouse will no longer work.  After I restart it then it seems to work fine.  I can't find any specific drivers for it to download to try and resolve this issue either.  Any ideas? Also, this laptop was used by someone before me and they formatted the harddrive so I lost my ThinkVantage restore stuff so I can't restore the laptop to its factory settings.  Is there a place I can download that or at least set it up by hand? I am hoping if I have that option it will fix the mouse issue as well.  Thanks!

Hello, please go to Lenovo support page. And download MS NET 2.0 and System Updater. First I would suggest to update only your ultranav driver, for trackpoint and touchpad. But donīt update all at once and be aware, also bios updates, which may be not necessary are offered there. If you are in warranty till now, try to call Lenovo hotline and they might send you the R&R discs for free.Otherwise you have to pay.  Message Edited by Agotthelf on 02-12-2008 08:16 AM

Hello, I have bought a thinkpad l412 in january and suddenly the touchpad & trackpoint are not working. I've have tested under Win7 and Linux both are not working. On win7 when I press fn+f8 an alert appear and say that my ultranav driver is not installed. When I check in bios -> config -> keyboard / mouse -> there is nothing about ultranav or trackpad. Thanks for your help.

Check the internal cable and verify it's in place, if so, try reseating it, you can find keyboard and palmrest's removal instructions in the HMM or at lenovo's service video website.
 
Sometimes putting BIOS configuration to default values also helps.

Hi All, I am very upset as my new x61's TrackPoint and Touchpad Button are not working at all... This is my first Thinkpad Notebook. I really have no idea why is that? I have downloaded and installed the driver for Trackpoint and system reboots. And i update the drive from device manager. But the problem still existed.... I am so disappointed... Wowzer J, that sounds frustrating. It is odd if you have a brand new X61 that the TrackPoint is not working. Did you just buy it from Lenovo? What exactly do you mean by "not working at all"? Even if the Lenovo drivers are not working, Vista includes drivers which will enable you to use the TrackPoint. One of the tricky things abou the Lenovo software downloads is that many of them require you to download, double click the downloaded software to extract it, then navigate to the extracted software folder to run the setup.exe to install it. The TrackPoint drivers first extract to C:\DRIVERS\WIN\TRACKPT.V32. You have to go there to run setup.exe. I'm also assuming that you really have an X61 and mis-spoke when you mentioned Touchpad. The X61 does not have a touchpad.

My boss has a Edge 15 laptop and her Touchpad nad Trackpoint stopped working for no apparent reason.  Is there a keybaord shotcut to enable these?  It is on automatic in the BIOS.  Pointer will not move at all with trackpoint and/or touchpad, works fine if i plug mouse into USB. Help please I am at a loss unless hardware failure.

I have heard of this happening before and the cause was a cable that was not firmly connected under the palmrest.  Your best bet is to call Lenovo support and arrange to have the system sent back for repair.  If you're handy with such things, you could remove the palmrest and check to make sure that the ribbon cables are firmly seated onto the motherboard.

Hi all Can anyone help me diagnose a problem I'm having with a friends T410. The trackpoint and touchpad buttons have stopped working (both left and right click). I am forced to use the laptop with an external mouse. The trackpad and touchpoint themselves both work just can't click anything, I have tried uninstalling drivers and re-installing but that hasn't helped, have also run Hirens boot cd - Mini XP mode and the buttons don't work there either. Sounds like a hardware issue to me but would like a second opinion before I start pulling it apart! Many thanks Chris

As I understand that you are facing issue with Touchpad & Trackpoint buttons are not working in T410.
You have tried almost everything & I don't think so its related to software or drivers. You can check without drivers once whether clicks are working or not. Else its a hardware issue for sure

T450 with Windows 10. Trackpoint and the three buttons on top of the trackpad are not working. Trackpad is working fine. In the mouse options under trackpoint properties the trackpoint is disabled and the slider to enable it is greyed out. in bios the trackpoint is enabled. Hello! Both the trackpoint and the buttons above the touchpad have stopped working on my Thinkpad T450.
 
The trackpoint stopped working awhile ago, while the buttons above the touchpad stopped working the other day, perhaps meaningfully around the time that a lenovo program on the computer did a 'standard' hardware scan.
 
Another problem is that my access to the standard support features of the lenovo website have been compromised as the main website will not recognice my Serial Number. The 3rd party website through which you organise on-site support does recognise the serial number, so I know that I am typing it correctly. However I am loath to organise on-site support for a problem which hopefully should be simple to solve.

I have a T510 that I got a  couple of months ago, and I have been using the Trackpoint middle button for scrolling in Firefox, until a couple of days ago when this feature  inexplicably stopped working. I've tried restarting my computer, making sure the Trackpoint settings are set to enable scrolling, updating my drivers, but nothing seems to be able to bring it back. Has anyone else had problem like this (where the Trackpoint scrolling unexpectedly stops working) or know of any other reasons for why it would stop working?

Hi, I have a weird problem with my T440p's TrackPoint (running Windows 7 Pro, x86) using out-of-the-box settings. Basically, it seems that its buttons do not work at all - the designated upper regions of the TouchPad (which should supposedly function as TrackPoint dedicated buttons) produce no effect upon clicking. Also, if I disable the TouchPad in the Mouse control panel module (ThinkPad tab), I can no longer click anything and have to resort to keyboard navigation to restore mouse functionality. What is interesting is that this is the second T440p unit I have tried to use the TrackPoint on and failed. The first one was also running Windows 7, but had a different screen (HD+, while the current one is Full HD) and CPU (2-core i5 vs. current 4-core i7). How do I use the TrackPoint buttons, again? Cause it's obvious by now that it does not work the same way as on my trusty X220 machine...

My first thought is that some software is missing.  I have a T440p with Win7 and the buttons work OK.  Is this a Win7 preload from Lenovo or did you install the OS yourself?

This issue has been afecting me for some time, but as the warranty is coming closer to expire I decided to look into it. Since I upgraded to Windows 10 (at least that I noticed) my TrackPoint has stopped working. I checked the Lenovo assistant and all drivers are updated. So I have an Thinkpad Edge E520 and for some reason my touchpad and trackpoint stopped working completely last week. I have a wireless mouse, which I am still able to use, but I want to still be able to use my trackpoint and touchpad. When I go to the device manager for the mouse, I see that my laptop doesnt have the Ultranav thing anymore, and when I try to install the driver on my laptop, it still does not show. Another problem I have had with my laptop which may be in relation to this is that my keyboard is acting strange. It will work for a while, but it will then stop working. If i put the laptop to sleep, then wake it up, it will work again for a few more minutes then will stop. I have attempted to restore my computer to factory settings, but the problems still occur. Has anyone else had this problem?

The trackpoint on my Yoga 12 frequently stops working. Trackpad and buttons continue to function. I am running the latest drivers.  I just received my machine back from the depot and they just reinstalled Windows 10 and the problem is still occuring.  Whenever it stops I can reinstall the synaptics trackpoint driver and it comes back to life.  Sometimes it is only for a minute other times much longer.  Any ideas?  Thanks in advance.

I have a Lenovo X120e with Windows 8. I was able to enable the trackpoint and disable the touchpad and lower buttons (which is how I prefer it) when I first got the laptop. However, a few weeks ago, the Trackpoint would intermittently stop working and the touchpad would be enabled again. It was usualy in flashes, so I didn't bother with it. Unfortunately, lately the Trackpoint has stopped working completely. I had to reinstall the driver, since the ultranav tab had disappeared from the mouse settings in the control panel. Now, however, the checkboxes for the Trackpoint in the ultranav tab are gray and I am unable to select any of them. Also, the check box to enable/disable the touchpad is gray, so I am unable to deselect it. Thoughts? This is driving me crazy!!

I do not have my X120e in front of me right now, but I believe there are settings in the BIOS related to the TrackPoint and TrackPad.  Have you tried enabling them there, then booting into Windows and looking at the settings for the pointing device in the Control Panel?

I have an x61s running Windows Vista business (32 bit). Problem is the trackpoint scrolling feature not working in Apple web browser Safari. Somewhere on the web I found instructions for fixing this by editing file tp4table.dat located in c:/windows/system32 However, I cannot find any such dat file in that location. I did find a file with that name in the following location: C:\Windows\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository\tp4track.inf_45c84db5\tp4table.dat To this file I added the following lines: ;iTunes/Safari Scroll Fix*,*,itunes.exe,*,*,*,WheelStd,0,9*,*,Safari.exe,*,*,*,WheelStd,0,9 However, this did not help, trackpoint scrolling still doesn't work in Safari. Does anyone have an idea how I can get this working? Thanks

Hi,My x220 4290's touchpad, trackpoint, and touchpad buttons and trackpoint buttons refuse to work. I'm having to use a USB mouse for the time being. I've tried to update the synaptics driver to the latest one which unfortunately hasn't helped. At the moment the system runs Windows 10 (has been for the last few months) with the latest BIOS installed. The touchpad and trackpoint don't even show up in device manager where they used to show.I opened the system up to check if the ribbon cable for the touchpad and the keyboard were both seated correctly. So, during the windows installer, no mouse. I couldn't see the pointer, neither the touchpad or trackpoint worked. I managed through using the keyboard, then once I got to the desktop I installed the "Synaptics ThinkPad UltraNav Driver for Windows 10 (64-bit) - ThinkPad" driver and rebooted. Still not working. I installed the thinkvantage system update, it detects no updates. I installed the service bridge. No updates. I then made a linux live USB that I use to install manjaro on all my laptops, yes everything worked out of the box on my previous x1 carbon. Touchpad doesn't work, xorg doesn't even recognize any touchpad present. Anyone else have this? Any solutions? This is actually my 2nd X1 carbon; the first works well but the mouse buttons are loose so Lenovo promised waived restocking and shipping with the purchase of a new order of equal or greater value; I ordered another one with plans to return the first one, because I really needed to keep it for work while I waited for the new one. The new one is actually flawless in terms of build, mouse buttons are solid, the CMOS battery is not loose and producing a rattling noise as it is in the first one, and the bottom cover doesn't have the clicking noise that so many are afflicted with. Really I'm willing to try anything to fix the touchpad.

I guess you have the 5th Gen, can you validate that?
 
What about the driver listed on the support site of the 5th Gen ? It seems to have some Synaptics driver and even some firmware update for it. Have you tried installing those ?
 
If you don't have the 5th Gen please specify the model to find the correct support site.

T510: I had to fix the Yellow DC-Input which fell into the laptop. I removed the KB and KB bezel where the TouchPad sits. I did this using the Hardware Maintenance PDF from Lenovo. Now both the UltraNav pointer and pad do not work and are not recognized in device manger. The only way to get around is via a Microsoft USB Mouse. I am using the latest BIOS. I have tried disabling and rebooting, returning to automatic, uninstalling, taking out the battery and power cable, pressing the power switch for 10 seconds ? etc. etc. When I press Fn +F8 it tells me the driver is not installed, but Synaptics 16.2.19.9 is installed ?I checked both cables under magnification to see if they were damaged. I also looked at the sockets. No bent pins on any of the 4 parts.BTW: I have another T510 in the lab, also running Win 7 Pro 64bit. It works fine. I can connect or disconnect the MS USB mice ? nothing prevents Fn +F8 from working and both the pointer and pad work.I have searched the forum and the internet, nothing seems to work.Any ideas?

Hi all,I know this isn't exactly linked to the model computer I own, but I thought the experts might be able to offer some advice. I was recently infected with a Trojan, and after removing it with a reputable program, the keyboard and trackpoint mouse have stopped working. When I get the windows login screen, the trackpoint works fine, but the second I press any key, both keyboard and mouse become totally frozen. Any ideas as to how I can get them back up and working? Clearly, they (at least the mouse) are not totally fried b/c it works fine before I touch the keyboard. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks,Kate

Sounds like you damaged a Windows system file or device driver.    I'd run SFC  /SCANNOW to check the system files.   You may need to boot in safe mode, off another drive or try attaching a different keyboard/mouse.  I'd also reinstall the drivers for the keyboard/mouse.  Message Edited by ctoys on 08-16-2008 06:16 PM

I never do these, but after extensive searching and trouble shooting without results, here I am.I have a Lenovo x230 laptop (2306cto model number) . The keyboard on it was having buttons stop working after extensive use, so I purchased a replacement keyboard for it (model CS12-84US). The keyboard is identical the previous one, including backlight functionality, and trackpoint. I swapped the keyboards, and all of the buttons started working again perfectly, except for the trackpoint mouse (little red button thing), the trackpoint mouse buttons, and also the backlight function for the keyboard (the Fn + Space only turns on the overhead light seated next to the webcam). I tried reseating it a few times, I checked all of the ribbons to ensure that there are no rips/tears, etc. I checked drivers again and again. The trackpoint section under the UltraNav Mouse settings is greyed out and inaccessible. I can't figure out what's wrong. This is a brand new keyboard. Hi, I got an S230u Twist last autumn and have been really happy with it. At the time, I ordered a set of replacement rubber TrackPoint caps. When I replaced the original cap the other day, I realised that the replacement ones are about 0.5mm shorter than the original one, with the result that the H and G keys get caught on the edge of the cap; you have to hit them quite hard to get them to work. I compared all the new caps from the packet against the original one, and sure enough; they're all a little too short. They fit, but it's annoying to have to go back and make sure all my ""G"s and "H"s typed correctly.  Has anyone else had the same problem? Lenovo, could this just have been a bad batch, and if so can I return the unused ones for a replacement set that is the correct height?

If you bought them from Lenovo I'd just try and return them. If not dispute on eBay/PayPal/Credit Card. But never use poor quality TrackPoint Caps. Remember if a computer is running efficiently so is the person behind it generally.

Got a strange one on my X201T.  For some reason I can't fathom, my laptop's Trackpoint, Touchpad and all their associated buttons do not work when I log into my laptop - they did before but in the last few days, they've stopped.  My external USB still works fine when connected. However, if, for example, I do 'ctrl-alt-del' and lock the laptop, they start working again until the moment I'm logged back in.  Also, If I log in on a Guest account, they all work fine!  This suggests it's not the hardware, I think. I've looked at the Control Panel / Mouse dialogue and the options under the UltraNav tab are all greyed out - but they are not on the Guest account.  Somehow, my user account on the laptop is not allowing me to use the Trackpoint, etc. My external USB mouse works fine in all accounts, btw. I'm running Windows 7 64-bit.  I've updated drivers through Lenovo update (though none seemed related to this problem). Any thoughts how I can fix this?

Hi All! I have a problem that's driving me crazy - hope someone here can help me solve it. I have a W541 with Windows 10 installed and all updates, including latest feature pack. My TrackPoint has been behaving very strangely. The below details have proved consistent over 3 OS fresh installations:- After installation and before any reboots, TrackPoint takes some time to start working (10 - 15 mins), but eventually it works perfectly. Pointer, mouse buttons, middle button, everything works. Mouse control panel shows the TrackPoint checkbox enabled and checked.- After first reboot, it stops working. Mouse control panel shows the TrackPoint checkbox disabled and unchecked. BIOS configuration shows the TrackPoint should be enabled. No changes after installation of the latest drivers downloaded from the Lenovo support portal.- In Device Manager, under "Mice and other pointing devices", there is a "Synaptics Pointing Device". When I uninstall the driver for this device, the TrackPoint works, but without the middle button functionality, and no configuration in Control Panel. I am assuming this is Windows trying to interface with the hardware directly via generic drivers. Eventually, the drivers automatically re-install and TrackPoint functionality is lost again.- The strangest detail of all: while TrackPoint is not working in normal Windows 10 operation, it works if I lock the screen!! The trackpoint on my LenovoT450s stopped working when I upgraded to Windows 10. When I went into settings, the 'Enable' box is still checked for the trackpoint. Someone suggested that I need to re-install the driver for the trackpoint but I have no idea how I would do that.

The 3 physical buttons below the space bar, they aren't working.  The keyboard, the trackpoint stick and the touchpad ARE all working.  Just the 3 buttons don't work. I even tried unplugging/reseating the keyboard from the motherboard, it's all secured nicely, no dust or obstructions. Windows 8.1 installation (previously buttons working on this same install) I have tried almost everything.  Basically I didn't even notice anything was wrong because for months I was working with an external mouse and keyboard.  Then today, when I went back to work on the laptop without the external mouse/keyboard, I noticed the problem. Everything else is working.  I updated to the latest ultranav drivers.  I'm thinking there is something screwy somewhere in the registry or with some windows update or something?  Any suggestions very much appreciated.

I have a Lenovo Thinkpad X61s. I just installed a wireless USB card today and it rendered the trackpoint non-functional.  Uninstalling the wireless software does not correct the issue. A USB mouse will work on the laptop. Any thoughts on how to correct this? Thanks,-Scott

Hello - I have a Thinkpad X60 Tablet PC. I just installed from scratch Windows 7. When looking into the device manager I see that the Trackpoint has an issue. The actual issue reported is - Device cannot be started. I upgraded the driver with the latest version available on the Lenovo Support site. It helped once, but after rebooting the thinkpad, the trackpoint was back in a not workable stage. Anyone had the same issue ?

The TrackPoint on my X1 Carbon stopped working this morning for no explicable reason. I made sure it's enabled in the BIOS, and uninstalled and reinstalled the Ultranav drivers. When I go to the Ultranav settings the "Enable TrackPoint" section is grayed out. Why would this happen all of a sudden? Any ideas on how to fix it? Thanks.

I have a Thinkpad T440S and have a problem that many have reported. The trackpoint and touchpad initially work upon bootup but then stop working after a few minutes.I believe I've tried everything (uninstall/reinstall drivers, replace keyboard, replace hard drive and do a complete reinstall of all software, update everything, etc etc etc). Nothing works and the only reason I can still use my computer is that a wireless mouse will work. It's time to get a new computer. I've bought Thinkpads for more than a decade but I still see this problem being reported for the T470 so Lenovo can't or won't bother to fix this. Any suggestions for a different brand and model? I do like the trackpoint so does that mean Dell is my only alternative?

Haven't been able to activate the press-to-select feature on SL510 under Windows 7. Does anybody have it working under Windows 7 or other OS? I haven't been able to find a confirmation in any Lenovo literature as to whether this feature is available at all or not on the SL510. This feature is very important to me

I haven't got good news for you. :-( I found a way to enable press-to-select settings in GUI. You have to switch HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Synaptics\SynTPCpl\HideTrackPointPressToSelect from 1 to 0. Unfortunately press-to-select is not working regardless of setting I choose.

Hey folks, The middle button for trackpoint doesn't work. All drivers are up to date. Middle button is enabled for scrolling, not clicking. Middle button works when switched over for clicking. It just randomly stopped working last week, but it works when I switch it over to clicking in the settings tool. Any ideas? Thanks

Using a W550s that had Windows 10 that was upgraded from Windows 7. The trackpoint doesn't work all the time when coming out of suspend/hibernate. It works maybe 10-20% of the time. The trackpad works fine.  Once I reboot, it works again.  I'm running the latest BIOS and all the latest drivers.

Hi Lenovo! I'm loving my thinkpad tablet! Only issue I have really had so far is that the trackpad and trackpoint stop working every once in a while... (as in once a month they will suddenly stop working). Then I install a driver, they start working again, only for the same problem to turn up after some more time has gone by. Last time this happened, installing the driver didn't help, nor did doing windows restore, which was very worrisome... I've had this laptop for less than a year so it is still under warranty, but I was wondering if there is a quick fix? Much appreciated!Ilana

Hi, I just purchased a SL500 from Lenovo. The UltraNav (TrackPoint and TouchPad) is not working. I have installed the drivers via the Lenovo website but still not working. I have always done all the windows updates, and Thinkvantage system updates, but still no joy.  I also installed the UtraNav Utility (which does not even show up under Thinkvantge after installation). Fn+F8 brings up the Mouse properties box, but there is no tab for the UltraNav device etc. I want to try a possible resolution via this forum before contacting Lenovo support. Thanks for your assistance! ***lenovo SL500, Vista Business 32***

Installing drivers from lenovo website was kind of tricky for me, initially. All I used to do was to run the setup.exe file; until someone told me that the drivers gets extracted in another folder in C:\. Hello,  I have had my yoga 12 for a couple of months now, and I just recently noticed an issue with the Trackpoint. After using the trackpoint for several minutes, 10-20 mins, the trackpoint will stop working. The buttons and touch pad remain functional, however the red trackpoint ceases to function. The only way I have been able to fix it is by rebooting the entire machine. I have searched around and havent seen a clear solution to my issue. My system spec's are listed below. Try Booting into the Recovery Environment.
     (From an OFF state, Press the One key Recovery Button)
Select Recovery.   We are not going to continue the Recovery, Just the Environment.
 
Once you saw your Mouse pointer, Try your touchscreen.
If that did not work there as well.
I suggest you call Lenovo Technical Team.

I just did a fresh install of Windows 10 on this HP Stream notebook.  Now the touch pad quit working.  And when I go into Device Manager to try and fix it and update the driver for the touch pad, there is not even that option.  Touch pad does not exist in the section for mouse and pointing devices.  Only the generic mouse I am using now appears. How can I fix this?Thank you!

Yes, you have to install the Intel chipset drivers from hp.com for the touchpad to work after a fresh install on the Stream notebooks. Run the driver execuatable files, don't try to update it from Device Manager.

A month ago or so, my touch screen stopped working.  I have not updated or downloaded or changed anything.  Running Windows 8.  When I go into my control panel - system - pen and touch, it says "No pen or touch input is available for this display."   It's worked perfectly the past year, what's up with it now?

I'm not sure this question is in the right forum but I've been searching for a solution all over the site with no luck. My C440 Touch isn't responding to touch.  I'm running Windows 8.1 64 bit.  I tried using the calibration screen but it wouldn't register my touch. I checked the drivers and everything seems to be up to date.  I regualrly update the computer when prompted. A lot of time I don't use the touch and I use the mouse.  Would there be some setting that would disable the touch capabilities?  I went to the Pen and Touch settings in the Control Panel and tried to adjust the setting but it wouldn't register the touch on the test images. I've run out of possible fixes, please help!

Hello, good evening, I have had an off-and-on issue with my trackpad not working. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. One moment it will work, the next, it doesn't. I have been bearing with it for months now (plugging in a usb mouse when it won't work for an extended period of time). Today, I stopped working during a timed test (I am a college student), and took 5 minutes to get it to work again. Valuable, precious time that could have meant the difference between an A and the D I ended up with (just kidding that low grade had to do with a refusal to study, but it could have been the cursor refusing to move!). Key points:I know this is not an issue with the function (fn) buttons. Tried that.I don't think it's drivers, because it works sometimes.The pad has been crooked since I got it (eg.: the left side is almost higher than the area around it, while the right side is sunken 2mm below the same area. The back appears to be even on both sides.) Any ideas?

When the touchpad doesn't work, can you check if the touchpad system icon detects that you're still putting pressure on the pad as shown below:
 

 
If you get the same scenario then it's possible that the touchpad is malfunctioning (possibly grounded) and you may need to contact lenovo for service.

Hi, I wonder whether there is a way to enable press-to-click for the trackpoint on the new x1? In the respective settings there is no such options and I searched everywhere, somebody found it? Next question: In order to avoid the annoying noise of the clickpad everytime you press it, I would like to use the tap function of the touchpad while using the trackpoint to move the cursor. Unfortunately, tapping on the pad seems to be disabled during use of trackpoint - any smart hack to get this workig? Thanks to all,J

I find I like using the top set of buttons designed to be used with the Trackpoint when I use the touch pad.  But when I type I bump the Trackpoint and move the mouse.  I'd like to disable the pointing only but leave the buttons working.  I tried setting the settings to have the Trackpoint set to use only advanced features, but the pointing stick still moves the cursor.  What am I doing wrong?Thanks!Rich

Okay so i've been struggling to find a fix to this and Lenovo support hasn't really been too useful either. Basically the trackpoint is having issues working even with the newest bios, etc. and synaptics driver. It also is having problems with the old driver too?? Could it be in conflict with the new bios update? Lenovo Support gave me the advice to reformatte as it is a "software" issue and to repeat the same above process. Yet the problem still persists.  What steps should I try next?  Lenovo support seems reluctant to give me a hardware exchange Thanks in advance, any advice is open to testing! I'm just fed up with new drivers having bugs like this.

Every now and then when my thinkpad edge 11 resumes from standby. The pointer won't move. It makes no difference if I use the trackpoint or the touchpad. When this occurs I have to restart the computer using the keyboard and then pointing devices work again. Does anyone know a way to fix this issue? The problem doesn't occur every time when resuming from standby but sometimes it does.

Answer:Trackpoint and Touchpad stops working after resume from standby

hey won1,uninstall the current trackpoint/touchpad driver for your unit.windows should then install its own generic drivers. now with generic drivers install, place your unit on standby and then resume it.see if the same error occurs. at the same time, head over to >> http://support.lenovo.com and update your unit from drivers to bios.
