Lenovo X240 Screen glitch (hardware issue, not software issue)

Question: Lenovo X240 Screen glitch (hardware issue, not software issue) happens on my computer whenever my laptop is at a certain angle. I found out that this is a hardware issue, and not a software issue, but I couldn't find the exact case. How should I fix it?

Preferred Solution: Lenovo X240 Screen glitch (hardware issue, not software issue)

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Lenovo X240 Screen glitch (hardware issue, not software issue)

The panel is failing. I believe the column drivers' contact tape has delaminated. It is a tape with one contact per LCD column (768) that runs along the edge of the screen

Hey there,

Yesterday my 2.5 year old laptop had an error.

I was working in excel, when suddenly the screen shifted out of focus.
I saw everything on the screen echoed some pixels to the upperleft, and moving the mouse over a shifted area turned this area back to normal, however this also shifted the area where the mouse no longer was.

I thought I should reboot my laptop, but then it wouldn't start. I have tried rebooting in safe mode and recovery modes and saw several blue screens flash by. I have inserted the 2 recovery discs that came with the laptop, but it cannot finish installation.

What concerns me is that even if I get a recovery disc to work, the screen might still be shifted. Do you think this might be a hardware error, a cable breaking somewhere? Or is it a software error somehow? Or perhaps it was a software error leading to a hardware malfunction?

I'd like to install an operating system again, but if the screen has a hardware issue it might be more worthwhile to buy a new laptop all together.
Please advise if you have any idea on what could cause this, thanks in advance!

Kind regards! ^_^

Answer:Is it a hardware and/or software issue when the screen suddenly shifts?

Hi mate?

Do you mean, the notebook cannot boot up, neither using the preinstalled OS nor using the recovery disk???

Are you able to go to BIOS?
Press F2 at the beginning in order to access the BIOS?.

But if this will not be possible then I would assume an hardware failure is responsible for this issue? maybe something wrong with graphic chip?

This might explain the strange display issues before notebook crashed?..

Hi all,

Earlier today my Asus x551m laptop stopped working; the cursor arrow is still visible and movable, but nothing is clickable, ctrl-alt-delete does nothing, and this laptop does not have an easily removable battery that would allow for a hard reset. Also, when I hold the laptop up to my ear, it is completely silent as if it's not even running. It's been like this for almost 3 hours, and I'm hoping that it will be ok once the battery dies and I power it on again.

Any help/tips/ideas on what could've happened? Thanks so much.

Answer:Unresponsive computer- hardware issue or Windows 8 glitch?

As an immediate fix, try switching it straight off from the main power, and then, after ten seconds or more, switch on again. This may give you the option to boot into safe mode. If so, and you can see nothing untoward, assuming you have control again, reboot and cross your fingers. This may not solve the problem permanently, but may give you a chance to see what is gong on.
If you have very recently installed a program, uninstall it temporarily. It does look as if you may have a program hanging in the background.

Ive had the Acer 3003 wlmi for 4 years now (running XP) - ive always had issues with a flickering screen which is the first issue. Second one started about 2 years ago - the laptop began overheating. Sometimes it gets so extreme that Im unable to touch the mousepad or have the machine on my lap. If any intensive application is run (ie, malware scans, dvd, youtube stream etc), the machine overheats powers off.

Last week, this happened and so I switched on the machine as per usual again - I was taken to screen where it recommends safe mode (3 different options), a normal mode, or a last known settings mode - if I click on any of these options, the machine powers off, then loads up again - its just a cycle now and I can't get past it.

Ive been able to access the BIOS screen, and have also taken out the cooling fan to clean.

I have mechanical failure warranty and they are scheduled to pick the machine up for evaluation in the next day or so - they have warned me that if it turns out to be a software issue or virus, then I will be liable for charges. Obviously I dont want it to come to that - what is the likelihood of this being the case? I dont have the system restore disc anymore so am unable to run that.

Or is it a hardware failure taking all things into consideration?

Suggestions/advice are greatly appreciated!

Hi, I have a problem with the sound. Whenever I try to use bluetooth speaker, the sound starts being chunky, crashing with too many delays. I have tried two different speakers. After some research through the net and many attempts for fixes, (I think) I found what is the problem. However, I still can not understand excactly how to solve it. Thus, I need some help. I think a picture of the DPC latency will explain everything. Thank you very much for your time!

Does Lenovo test the drivers they release any more? I just updated the touchpad driver today and the two finger scrolling is locked to the same setting whether you pick Traditional or Standard in the setting menu. Latest Intel Graphics Driver Lenovo released causes Youtube video to freeze in Chrome and they still haven't released an update even though Intel already did. My X1 Carbon 3rd gen has screen flicker/freeze issue after waking up from sleep. I submitted a ticket a week ago and hear absolutely nothing. According to other member, even replacing motherboard doesn't fix it. I am really started to regret my purchase.

Could someone please help me? My computer just keeps rebooting over and over again. I thought it was Norton doing it, so I uninstalled Norton. Not only was the computer still rebooting but then I keep getting an error message about a driver and that Windows needed to shut down, and sometimes locking up too. I scheduled check disk, clean drive it said.

So then I thought it must be Windows, it's a mess I'll format. I'm using 1 hard drive that I have 3 partitions on, 1 of those partitions, E, has all my data files so I wasn't worried about losing anything because I was only going to format C and I've done it in the past without a problem, it just takes time to reinstall everything. So I format and start reinstalling Windows, I got rebooted a few times during the reinstall of Windows and once I got in to Windows it kept rebooting me.

So I thought maybe it's the CD drive, I'll try the DVD drive instead. So I switch to the DVD drive to reinstall Windows again. It was better but I still got rebooted in the end, the last few minutes of the install but it didn't restart the install, then it went in to Windows so I don't know if it actually finished. Anyway not only is it still rebooting me but it's rebooting me so much that I can't even stay in Windows long enough to install anything else like mainboard drivers. I tried chkdsk /r, it's still doing it. The more I tried to fix it the worse it got and apparently I think ... Read more

Download a Linux Live CD and boot from it. Unlike Windows, Linux can run straight from the disk. If the PC starts up normal using the Linux CD then you know it's an OS issue. If the PC won't run from the disk check to make sure booting from CD is enabled in the PC BIOS.

I have been having an intermittent range of internet connection problems with my computer running vista home premium over adsl.

Initially my connection would drop out over night and in the early hours of the morning and if I browsed for too long /opened too many sites simultaneously my connection would cease to work. The internet would appear to be still connected in the MS icon in the tray (a globe showed over the two monitors). When I asked vista to check the connection/repair it told me that it was a connection with the ISP.

After a few frustrating weeks dealing with the ISP they admitted a fault and said they would fix it.

My connection no longer drops out (I never lose the globe in the tray) but the problem where excessive www browsing stops the browser working. I have tried IE, Chrome, I have disabled my firewall, reset the network adapter, bought a new router, reset the old and new router but the problem persists.

I'm sorry if I sound vague

Any ideas?

Had my PC for 2 years, it has 2TB 8GB i5, that's all I can tell about the hardware.
Upgraded to Windows 10 about 8 months ago and everything has been fine.
Over the past week or so the PC has been getting slower and slower.
Boots up slower etc, yesterday I tried a System Restore point but would only let
me go back to the 19th August. The pc was still slow so
I ran a McAfee Virus Scan with no issues
Ran a System Clean
Defragged the harddrive
I also have over 1Tb of Free Space.
Today it's been even slower and now to the point where Windows 10 will load up, but
once I type in my password to login it will either go to a black screen or load up windows after 20 mins and then freeze.
As I'm not able to login to windows I've tried Safe Mode which does the same, just freezes
when it lets me login to windows.
Also tried Start-up Repair, but received the message Start-Up Repair couldn't repair your PC.
I tried System Restore again which says "System Restore did not complete successfully" Your computers settings and files were not changed.
I've also unplugged all USB attachments apart from keyboard and mouse to try booting this way.
Has anyone got any other ideas I could try, bare in mind I cannot login to windows and have no start up disk.
I'm also worried I'll not be able to back up my files, especially family photos.
I'm currently trying the different start up options other than safe mode, such as low resoultion etc.
Do you think it could be a hardware problem?

hey guys,

Hope you can help me with this. I got a computer from my friend who thought maybe I could fix it. My area is spyware and viruses so I dont know much about this. What happens is the comp starts up, and I get a improper shut down error and wants to choose how to boot... safe mode, last known, etc etc. No matter what option is chosen heres what comes up

A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:

Check to make sure any new hardware or software is properly installed. If this is a new installation, ask your hardware or software manufacturer for any windows updates you might need.

If problems continue, disable or remove any newly installed hardware or software. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. If you need to use Safe Mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer, press F8 to select Advanced Startup Options, and then select Safe Mode.

Technical information:

*** STOP: 0x000000ED (0x80A4EE30, 0x00000032, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)

Not sure what it is, I cant even open the CD rom drive to try to repair so Im kinda lost. Any help would be great. Thanks.

Hello, The touchscreen of my Lumia 950 behave strangely: A simple touch on the start screen is changing suddenly in horizontal scroll, or, when typing, the input is moving very fast to the right or left, randomly, and the result is different for what you want. This is not a permanent situation, sometimes is happens, sometimes not. It is present even on redstone with hard reset. I didn't received the double tap firmware. What do you think, is something connected to a hardware or a software issue? Just wondering if anyone has been in a similar situation and what you ended up doing. Thanks!

Dell optiplex 740
Windows 7 32bit (originally had vista on the machine)
2Gb memory

I can probably provide more details if necessary.
I'm not sure which.  My wife works helping an elderly gentleman in his house and he has not been able to use his computer for a little while now so they asked me to look at it.  I hate when things don't go smoothly....  that's life though right...
The issue to begin with was that it would not finish starting up before shutting down.  One issue they had that was preventing me from even investigating the issues was that the guy's son set up passwords for his account and for an admin account so that nothing would get installed without permission accidentally.  This guy is in his 90's and has a LOT of trouble seeing.  He really only uses the computer for solitaire but he's missing that right now.
I finally got the son to track down what the admin password might be and he suggested two... fortunately one was right.  I was afraid I was going to have to do a fresh install(which I still could do I suppose...)
I'm in the process of TRYING to figure some things out with it and not getting very far so far.  The other day while at his house I managed to get into safe mode... and even into windows in the admin account for a while before it just shut down.  This has me leaning towards a hardware issue...  but I don't know.  These things can take SO long sometimes I told him I... The optiplex 740 is supposed to have a set of diagnostic lights of the front panel. See the manual here. Page 52 shows how to access Dell Diagnostics for a set of tests. The power light also changes color to indicate a problem. Edit: Now that Windows 7 is on the computer, the Diagnostic Partition may be gone.

I was not sure whether this belonged in software or hardware- I have a Dell Inspiron 6400 with XP, sp3. Most of my activities on the computer revolve around graphics and digitizing embroidery designs. I have used the same embroidery software for about 5 years, have gone through 2 upgrades, the latest in mid Dec. I will try to be succinct-however, I have spent at least 100 hours on the phone with tech support since Dec, and I still don't have a diagnosis.
There were not problems for about a week after the embroidery software upgrade. Then, when doing a normal function in the program, it would abruptly close. The first time was on a weekend so I uninstalled and reinstalled the program. Then I called the tech support for the software, and they showed me the fix for the problem-when the program closed there was an error message "defaults.dfl missing" Actually, I discovered the file was not missing, it was being renamed to an alphanumeric.dfl by some evil entity in my computer, somehow. This continued to happen up to 10 times per day, and they had me install the software on another computer, and I could not duplicate the problem there. They had me call NOrton, and we uninstalled my Norton 360, and eliminated that as a source of conflict. I should add that I have done multiple virus/malware/trojan, scans with NOrton and on the microsoft site, and they all came up squeaky clean.
The next thing was to go to Microsoft, and I ended up getting bumped up to Microsoft res... Read more

the issue is as following:
after uninstalling the software for this unit , if i reinstall the scanner cannot be used via the software anymore. complaining about communication error.
removing HKLM/SOFTWARE/Hewlett-packard from registry, deleting the software entry from Program files, local settings, application data gives the same resoults.
scanning from windows wizard works.

the software also have a procedure for full manuall 4 step uninstallation which also doesnt work.

my question are:
1: is there any way to know the exact registry entries the software installs ?
2: what may possible couse this issue? installing the same unit and software under diff pc works but uninstallation will couse the same issue.
3:is it possible to track the exact registry entry that may be responsible for this communication error between hardware and its software?

Windows 7 Pro x64 on a quad core machine with 3GB memory. Some programs began extremely sluggish behavior. USB drive appeared hosed and Windows wanted to reformat, but connected it to another computer and all files were intact. iTunes would take forever to boot, then would not recognize USB-connected device. Could not install new programs from the Desktop, only from secondary drive. Taskbar incorrectly reporting that anti-virus was not active. Tried to reinstall Norton, but could not. Thinking this was an OS issue I got a new drive and made a clean install. No change in faulty behaviors! So, is it hardware? BIOS? Simple diagnostic showed RAM good, drives good, video good... Can I trust that? This is my personal machine and I'm going thru withdrawals!

Hi and thanks in advance if anyone can help resolve my problem(s)

Here goes,
Everything was operating without any major issues until I connected an external usb hdd (external power supply) and tried to transfer some media, xp was having none of it.
Screen froze, which lead to me having to reboot with hardware button.

That was 3 months ago and ever since xp is constantly freezing randomly with no errors reported in log.

Have been running in safe mode most of the time ever since, as computer doesn't freeze half as often, however safe mode now refuses to start, and just hangs at the "MUP" process/service?

Decided I'd chance a recovery install of windows with dvd that came with computer, but as luck would have it my optical drive has now decided it doesn't want to read dvds anymore.
Long story short
What I really want to find out is whether I have a software/hardware problem, if it turns out to be the latter I'll probably just update to a newer computer, but if its at all possible i'd prefer to keep my current system

Iqon laptop running xp service pack 3

Again any help much appreciated

Answer:Hardware or software issue?

Windows XP, as good as it was, is well past it's "sell by" date, so I would just get a new or newer system anyway. However, Windows Vista was far from being a worthy successor to XP, so I would buy a new system with Windows 7 pre-installed if you can afford it.

And don't accept any system with less than 4gig RAM & at least a dual-core CPU.

Allright so about 5 days ago my pc started acting up. When I turn on my wireless adapter, my pc slows down to a crawl, it sometime takes 4 minutes or more to start a program if it starts at all. Sometimes it just blue screens and gives me an inpage kernel error message. When I reboot also it will take 10 minutes or more to start all the programs if wireless adapter is turned on but has no problems when i turn off the adapter and reboot. after rebooting though when i do try to turn it back on it slows down again. Ok, this is a recently built system. The problem I seem to be coming into this, when ever running games they crash. Depending on the game I'm playing I get different reactions. L4D jsut crashes to my desktop, City of heroes crashes and gives me an error 14 Open gl crash error, prototype just freezes... After talking to EVGA they told me it was the video card and it was RMA'd. When that didn't work they told me it was the PSU, so I replaced it. Now they want me to RMA my mother board... I've tried on diefferent OS's (win7 RC and RTM, Vista) with the same results. I was recently told it was an issue with installing DX9 with said games, but I did a clean install and its not helping. Any help would be amazing!!

Answer:Not sure if this is Hardware of Software issue.

I see a few hardware issues with your parts.

1 IMO the only chipset to use for an intel build is an intel chipset. When you use a third party chipset like nvidia, you are asking for problems.

2 Next issue is your ram. Did you check that the ram you used is on the approved list for your motherboard? High performance ram very often needs a higher vdimm [ram voltage] set in the bios. Have you done this task?

Tonight, I could barely see a login screen because of all the distortion, but after I rebooted the system everything is perfect and it stays perfect.

I received the BSOD saying it couldn't load certain drivers, so i went into the event viewer of the time it happened and got this below.

Would this be a software issue or hardware issue?

Answer:Hardware of Software issue?

This should probably be in the BSOD Forum, and here are instructions on how to properly post BSOD information. In the meantime, have you added any new hardware (including USB devices like webcams) or software to your system?

First of all, pardon me for my bad English. I'm from Malaysia and today I've just gotten my newly shipped X201i and of course I was very excited to look at my brand new X201i after 2 years of satisfied user of X60s. Unfortunately, things doesn't turned out to be exactly what I've expected. Would like to seek for some advice, did anyone face this problem before as describe below?
Upon opening up the wrap which was sealed, immediately I've noticed a huge crack between the battery slot and the LCD.
I was stunned by this crack! How could this happen?! The box are perfectly fine, and there's not sign of damage on the box and it was just fresh out of the box!
Without 2nd thought, I quickly drove out to Lenovo service center to seek for help because there's no way to slot in the battery in this situation.
Upon arrival, I informed the person who pick up this case however, they seems reluctant to accept this condition because they think it is intentional damage on the chassis. I did tried to explain to the customer service:
1) The box is fine without any damage. I received this unit with another box covering this lenovo box.
2) The notebook definitely handled with care, it is brand new! If the notebook has been drop before, there's definitely a sign of dent or scratches at the edge or any other part of the notebook together with this crack but it is perfectly fine without any single scratches or dent... Read more

Answer:[Help] - Lenovo X201i Hardware QC issue?

That's terrible. Looks like the part was damaged before assembly. My guess is production line pressure ie employee afraid of repremaind. From a laypersons perspective unless someone took a screwdriver and tried to pry that part with intention to crack it, there is no other way it could look like that. Doesnt look like a drop. I hope you get it resolved. One way is to ask your credit card company to halt payment and this would force action if you have not received a considerate ear yet.

Hello All, Few days back i started FIFA14 and my laptop crashed with a bluescreen due to the atikmpag.sysThis has happend earlier several times but not with FIFA14 ever. So i tried to debug the issue i have done following things: Tried to update the driver from ATI site, but as this laptop uses customised drivers from lenovo only so this FAILED!re install the driver: but as soon as driver gets installed laptop crases with blue screen of same error.Tried a solution in which i had to copy the .sy_ file and extract it manually using cmd, but this too didnt worked. Now my ATI chip is not working so reverted back to intel integrated graphics. I am sure now this is an hardware issue. I am unable to find solution, took it to service center they are telling me to replace the mother board. cant this issue be resolved with some chip level repairs??

I took a look through other possible threads and didn't find anyone with my exact issue.

I recently (a few weeks ago) bought an XFX Radeon HD 5770. I installed it and it ran beautifully for a day.

Then, when playing Starcraft 2 the mouse icon became distorted. I close SC2 and it remains funky on windows as well. Shredded like an artifact. No other graphical errors.

I got better cooling as I thought it may have been a heat issue. It is definitely not heat.

I reinstalled drivers from AMD. Am currently reinstalling directx.

Could this be a hardware issue straight out of the box? What could cause this? Should I return the card ASAP, exchange it?

Answer:Software or Hardware Issue? HD 5770

Have you tried going into your mouse pointer settings and changing them to a different pointer, then changing back to your original pointer? It could simply have been a SC2 glitch, though I haven't experienced that with SC2 myself.

Control Panel-->Hardware and Sound-->Mouse (under Devices and Printers)-->Pointers tab-->select different theme and click apply, then select original theme and click apply.

Hi there,

Im currently working on a pc that is giving me a bit of a hassel, let me explaine the senorio:

Pc was working fine and all of a sudden the screen went black, i then restarted the pc considering that was my only option. I have some experience with computers, so i opened it up and replaced the Graphics card with a new one - PC boots up, POST is visible but once entering into few xp's desktop screen goes black, no beeps & all harware seems to be working.

I then replaced the PSU with a spare and same problem.
Replaced the RAM module and same problem.
Tested the Monitor & is working.
I have the motherboard outside the pc with new RAM, new PSU, new Graphics Card & original HDD connected but just wont boot into windows with normal display...?!

The Motherboard is an early p4 : ASUS P4V533-MX
RAM : 512MB PC400 New
PSU : Procase 300W New
AGP : ATI Radeon 9550GE
CPU : 2.4GB Cel Socket 478

Oh and i've did the whole trial & error with the onboard display - same prob.

Im thinking bout maybe putting a new Hard Drive on and reformating it, loading xp and retesting old parts?!

Answer:[SOLVED] Hardware or Software issue?

Hi Sublime and welcome to TSF !

Have you tried safe mode or last known good configuration ? Repeatedly press F8 while windows starts.

If safe mode doesn't work with the dedicated video card then unplug the radeon 9550, reset the CMOS, enter the BIOS to check that the video is set to use the onboard GPU and try to get within Windows in safe mode with the onboard video.

Enter the BIOS at startup and tell us about the temps, fan speeds and voltages you'll see in the hardware monitor or pc health status screen (if there's such a screen).

My PC is 5 years old and has developed numerous problems in the space of 2 months. I've had a computer engineer out to look at it several times now and it's unclear whether the PC is actually dying due to a hardware problem (most likely motherboard or processor) or it can just do with a reinstall of windows. The PSU and graphics card overheated which has since been replaced, but while it was overheating it may have damaged other hardware. These days it blue screens a lot, crashes halfway through and refuses to boot up, unless, and this I found out through trial and error with the engineer: I unplug the power cable, switch off the machine at the back, take the cover of the case, and unplug the cables going into the Hard Drive and Graphics card, let it cool down for a while, and then reboot. Then it works.Does this sound like a hardware or software problem? The engineer is at a loss unless I spend more money finding out. Please can anyone advise? I'm not very technical and need to know if it can be repaired rather than pay out for a new machine.

Hi guys,

Any help you can provide with this problem would be much appreciated.
I have been banging my head against the wall trying to figure this out.
OS: Windows XP pro w/ service pack 2.
video card drivers: force ware 93.71.

Here is what happens:
- Upon doing nothing in particular, The picture on my monitor becomes distorted, the system hangs and I am forced to reboot.
I believe that this is indicative of the dreaded "infinite loop" nvidia driver error. A few months back, windows XP would
actually log the blue screen of death and I was able to submit an online crash analysis upon rebooting. The crash analysis
always had the same stop code: THREAD_STUCK_IN_DEVICE_DRIVER. Now however, the system simply hangs.
Mind you the symptoms are exactly the same as stated before: distorted screen for 3 seconds, no picture, followed by a
hanging system. I have ran driver cleaner several times and reinstalled the video card drivers. I have gone at most a month
without a single one of these crashes.
- I have since switched over to Zone alarm anti-virus from Norton because I believe Norton
to be too intrusive and hence the cause of the problem. Unfortunately the crash still occurs. My machine is usually on at least
2 or 3 days before one of these crashes occurs. I have never experienced it after an immediate reboot.
Back when I had Norton, the last program to generate an event in the log before the crash was ALWAYS Norton or a windows process.

I have a Fujitsu Siemens amilo laptop running Ubuntu and widnows 7...

The wifi sometimes works, the wifi sometimes doesnt work.

I have tried disabling network adapter, uninstall and restarting, didnt work..
When its not working it still shows up in device manager with no problems..

you could try it 2 hours later and it works no bother for days on end..

anyone have this problem before?
recon it could be faulty or loose adapter?
doubt its drivers..

Cheers for any help!!

Answer:wifi issue.. hardware/software?

Cannot help you with the Linux version as I dont have Ubuntu installed at present, but in Windows open up in Device Manager your WiFi Adapter and right click > Properties and choose the Power Management tab and untick the box that may say "allow the computer to turn off the device to save power" and click apply, reboot and see how you get on.

What router make and model do you have?
Could try this and disable AutoTuning to do so you will need to open an elevated CMD prompt and click Start and type CMD into the start search box then right click CMD and choose Run as Administrator, then type this command in

netsh interface tcp set global autotuninglevel=disabled

hit enter and reboot.

When in use or after pressing the "on" button, I sometimes get a blue screen error message with the sad face. This message has showed different errors including a disk error. I turn it off holding the on button for a few seconds, and it will turn on to show me the login screen. I type in my password, and a black screen with a cursor appears.
When this happens, I open the task manager, click on file, run, msconfig, boot, check the safe mode option. In safe mode, I do win + r, msconfig, and uncheck the safe mode option. Restart it, and everything goes back to normal.
I'm just wondering, is it a corrupt registry? A problem with my hard disk? Or maybe a windows update (one of the automatic updates) causing me trouble?

Okay so I have a Windows 8, Dell laptop with an intel pentium cpu2127U 1.9ghz processor, 4GB of RAM, 64 bit operating system. recently the sound stopped working. I restarted the computer and the sound came back but once I went to youtube and tried to play a video the sound went out again. Maybe stopped when I plugged in my earphones but for the life of me I can't get it back on. I don't really know what is happening or what the problem is. All drivers are up to date and all devices still show up in the device manager. Any ideas?

Answer:Getting no sound, not sure if hardware or software issue

Hey guys, I found and fixed the problem. Turns out some jiggle-monkey (probably me) ended up turning on a feature of the audio that turns off the audio devices if there isn't a sound event within 30 seconds. I turned that off and boom got my sound back. Why would that even be an option? oh well If a moderator could delete this thread so it doesn't waste precious space on the boards that would be great. Thanks.

I was here about a month or so ago about trouble with this computer. Everyone was really helpful- now I'm back with MORE trouble. Found out one of my games had issues with the Nvidia drivers I used and it caused odd issues. Thought that was my problem and learned to live with it. Now this... did I mention I hate this computer?

Yesterday, while online, computer locked up and had to be rebooted, twice. 2nd time I got the same error message I had last month- NTLDR is missing. This time the bootable floopy didn't work to get back in.

When I attempted to use the Recovery CD- my main HD was missing. I figured it crashed. OK, I reformatted my other harddrive and reloaded XP. Checked in set up and ONLY the 300 gig hard drive was listed. The 200 (my main HD was gone).

This AM, I was starting to reload the drivers. The 1st time it had to shut down and restart- at the loading screen it pops up Non System disk error... I thought it was the driver CD, took that out and same error. Went back into my setup, reconfigured it to boot from harddisk, then CD. That's the ONLY change I made. Still didn't work, I had to put in my recovery CD again. Booted right into windows. MY OLD MISSING HARD DRIVE WINDOWS- with all my software.

Yes, my dead HD is now back. In fact, it shows both my HD's again. Since I'm positve I haven't become capable of bringing dead hard drives back to life, I now have 2 drives with XP loaded on them and I'm scared to shut this da... Read more

How to determine if i have internall battery installed (i read somewhere that these models support "internal" + external battery. And if i don't have it i would like to install this too. The last thing is that currently i live in Lithuania and i didn't find any Lenovo shop or support center in it. Could you advice how could i get those upgrades/or its possible and what is the neariest country for this? Thank you !

Answer:Lenovo x240 Hardware Upgrades

1. I don't have 3g modem installed, how could i order it? Is it possible? I do not think there is one available, but you can find USB moblile broadband modems for LTE/4g and 3g online for not much money. 2. I bought this laptop when i was studying in Denmark. It has Danish keyboard. Ir really doesn't matter for me but since i want to upgrade some stuff im asking is is possible for me to get Danish keyboard replaced with US? + I want the keyboard have backlight (currently there is no backlight). Is it possible? To replace the keyboad, you have to take your laptop almost completely apart, so you might consider either ordering a Keyboard cover for your X240 with US Layouts, or you can buy US Layout stickers to apply to cover each of the keys.     How to replace the keyboard on an x240 The X240 did offer a backlit keyboard option,  but I am pretty sure that systems main system board/motherboard will NOT have the needed connections to power the backlight feature. 3. How to deremine how many slots of ram do i have in total? How many used/free? I want to upgrade the ram's too. (currently there is 4GB installed) The x240 has only one slot, and supports a maximum of 8GB  of PC3-12800 DDR3L-1600MHz SODIMM Memory.   4. Had some issues with my laptop in december and eventually handed it in to the store which I bought it from. They sent it along to a workshop who changed the motherboard. I just got the computer back earlier this week, but I'm experiencing similar issues, though not as severe as it was in december.

Basically the system seems unstable and i get BSOD's randomly. I'm struggling to find a pattern as to when it happens, and the error-codes are different. Since I got it back from the workshop I've had 5 BSOD's, as you can see in the attached file. Back in december before I handed it in the first time I would get several BSOD's a day.

Is anyone able to identify the source of the problem? I suspect it's hardware related, but I'm no expert.

Recently my computer has been unable to start, becoming locked in an endless loop of BSOD.

The problem began suddenly while playing World of Warcraft.

The computer crashed to a blue screen, I didn't record what it said at the time, as I thought it would be resolved with a restart.

Upon restarting the machine, there was wierd visual artifacts on the screen before the windows loading screen, all the BIOS information stuff was all deranged, with odd symbols, numbers are spaces where they should not be.

The windows loading screen appeared, it passed, went to a black screen for about 20 secs, then came up with a BSOD, that said the problem was caused by Nv4_DISP.DLL.

'STOP: 0X000000EA'

I restarted the computer in safe mode, uninstalled the nvidia drivers, and restarted the machine, it still has the wierd visual problems when loading the bios, but windows is now graphically fine.

I downloaded the latest drivers, and proceeded to install them. Once they were installed, horizontal black lines, clustered in bands of five appeared accross the whole thing.

I restarted the machine as required by setup, and I got the same BSOD as before.

Do you think this is a software fault, or a hardware fault.

I am unsure why there would be graphical gli... Read more

hello, i use a HP ENVY dv4 with core i5, 2.5ghz, 6GB RAM and a 750GB HDD. I recently did a fresh installation windows 8.1 because i was having some problems with previous windows 8 but the problem still persists. The problem was that it was unable to sleep, when i put it to sleep the screen just goes off for about 3 seconds then it comes on again. I also noticed that my hard disk space decreased after each restart. so i did a clean installation of windows 8.1, after the installation i noticed it still didnt sleep, asides that my keyboard is really messing up. when i try to type it presses other buttons in conjunction which i didnt press For example i press "L" it just locks my screen and i understand that the "windows button + L" locks the screen. Because of all that i cant really use my pc the way i want, even with it is difficult.
Please i'd really love to hear suggestions of what i could do about it. Thank you!

I'm starting to get what I think are hardware problems on my laptop. One of which includes the laptop screen having two small thin lines on the screen (horizontal and vertical ones.) It sprung up one night along with a slew of other errors, including two complete crashes and a total keyboard failure. I know the screen is a hardware error, but they keyboard I can't tell if its a driver/firmware problem or a hardware issue. Someone please suggest troubleshooting methods to find out which. The keyborad problems is that the left CTRL and left arrow doesn't work and the number keys are messed up. The delete key fails often too. (I have to copy/paste the model number because I have no five.) I've tried restoring and I've tried finding other ways but can't tell if what or how to fix it if its a hardware problem, or how to trobleshoot a software one. Anyone have suggestions? This is pretty frustrating. Thank you all for any help you can make. \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\Optional note: I can fix the screen myself. Easily, too. I'm having trouble playing some of my games, as in sudden browser closures or failure to open programs. Unfortunately, I can't replicate these problems. I wonder if there is a graphics card problem or how to troubleshoot the card for problems? Thats optional, though. The keyboard is what I really want to know.

Answer:Keyboard issue. Software or Hardware? G560

Hi Patricoo and welcome to the Community,
Can you hook up an external monitor and see if the lines are on it too?  If they are, then I would say your screen is ok and it might be a graphics chip problem.
How about heat?  When was the last time you cleaned  the dust out of it?  Or changed the thermal paste.
There's no keyboard driver, per se.  Certain keys are handled by the bios.  That's why the keyboard works with no os.
I'd open it up and see what it looks like in there.

Hello, This hardware item worked perfectly the first time it was used. It was plugged in and the image appeared both on the notebook and the TV screen. However, on the second occasion it would not work. It appears that the notepad is not sending an output signal to the connection. And it will not allow the display setting to be changed to two screens unless it is actually plugged in. Right now, when the external connection to the TV is plugged in the notepad screen goes black. Unplug the device, screen image returns. So, it isn't possible to access the settings when the notepad screen is dark. The function keys F3 and F4 have been tried while the screen is black. Any thoughts on what to do next would be appreciated! The comments on the gigaware PCTV hardware @ Radio Shack haven't been that helpful other than to point out that most issues reside with the signal coming to the device not the device itself. Adriaan203

I'm currently getting a strange issue with the on-board ethernet adapter on my older secondary system I use in the living room that I use for mainly just desktop apps.

Before upgrading to Windows 10 pro x64 yesterday I was running Windows 7 Ultimate x64 on this system and everything was working just fine, including the ethernet adapter. When I upgraded yesterday, at first all drivers downloaded and installed correctly despite some components in this system being from 2006, compliments for the great compatibility. The ethernet adapter also had a working driver and was working fine. However when I restarted the system things got weird. The BIOS booted normally, then I briefly saw the windows 10 logo and loading icon, but they looked artifacted, the screen went black and nothing booted up. Because of the artifacts I thought the GPU may have died. I turned the PC off with the power button, and turned it on again. This time the windows logo was normal and windows booted up normally with one exception, no internet connection. Turns out that the on board ethernet device was ''not connected'' according to the hidden devices in device manager, as if I unplugged it. Luckily I could still use internet as the PC also has a backup PCI wireless network card, I'd rather use wired internet anyway. So I left the PC unplugged for 1 night, when I turned it on again in the morning, the on-board ethernet adapter was working again. When I restarted, same routine, artifacted windows logo, blac... Now, in Windows 7 I am getting frequent blue screens, usually within 5 or 10 minutes of startup, to the point where I can't even use the computer.  I also sometimes just will get a hard freeze during, or after startup.  Sometimes, the computer doesn't even turn on at all, and my num-lock and caps-lock lights flash 4-times in a repeated pattern with a black screen.  According to the HP website this indicates a problem with the graphics card, but it only happens intermittently.  Sometimes, after booting up, I will get a Windows 7 message that says the graphics driver has crashed, but has recovered.  Typically, I will get a blue screen or a hard lockup within 10 minutes of this message.
In Linux Mint, I will often get a hard freeze within 10 minutes of startup, or it will stall during the boot process.
Since I am having similar problems in both operating systems, I am wondering if this is definitely a hardware issue or if there are viruses/rootkits/etc. that could infect both OS simultaneously.
I am running AVG in Windows 7 and it is up to date.  A couple months ago, something happened where it ha... Read more

Hello to all.. this is my first time writing here. Thats all about my 3000 N200 never made any trouble :-) Up to now... I don't now really when this happend but few days ago ALL my USB port won't recognize any kind of USB device anymore... In device manager the USB Host are installed but the are also 4 unkonwn USB devices I never saw before.Besides this my 3000 N200 runs hot because of 50% system (220K) in taskmanger.... Up to now I tried everything posibble regarding installation and software. Also an complete new ("Cleaninstall") installation on another HD...  Same problem... What I found out is if I deactivate some or all of the USB Controller in device manager the "error" in the task manager has gone....  again silent and cold 99% unused power.... Another strange thing, which I found out during my tests, was that one of my USB sticks will be recognize if its pluged in during boot... And it worked normnally!  But if I de- and replug he is again not recognized!Another USB device (Audio 8 DJ soundcard interface of NI Traktor) was never recognized! That all leads me to the opinion that somethning with my USB Hardware is not correct....For my this all sounds like that my USB port do not have any/enough power anymore to adress the devices... Does anyone of you know were I can take a look into my 3000 N200 to find out were this power supply of the USB ports is? Hello. I have an issue that it is been concerning and annoying for over the past week. This references or relates to my security software BitDefender Internet Security 2010. (Oh, I am running Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005, basically Windows XP Professional.) I have been communicating for a week now with them and all communication has stopped within the last few days with their Senior level Tech Support. I think I have them completely stumped as they are not responding to me any longer to my replies. (I am now contemplating if I want them any longer as my security software.) I hope for assistance from a professional to guide me with my issue. You may know my solution or safely troubleshoot to find the resolution. This would be greatly appreciated!!!

This is the issue:

At the conclusion of the loading of the startup icons after starting Windows XP, I receive a window that states ?Found New Hardware? ?Welcome to the Found New Hardware Wizard?. First when I received this window, I have ran the wizard to try to locate the drivers or programs that it was requesting. To no avail did I find a solution to this issue. At each system restart, the same window would load requesting some driver or program. I was curious as to the missing driver or program it was requesting. This issue has been happening over the past week. I did not know if some driver or program is missing, there is some corruption in the system, or some malware on my system causing this issue. To ... Hi all,
My old trusty laptop of 3 years has recently showed some weird symptoms.
I am able to use it normally till about 30 minutes or so (If I'm lucky I get it to function for a longer time), before everything hangs.
Display still shows, and during the initial stages of the freeze, the cursor still moves around but can't click on anything.
Wait further, the cursor stops moving and then I have to do a hard switch off with the power button.
May I know what the issue is?
Thank you in advance.

I upgraded my desktop PC from 8.1 to 10 last week. No problems with startup and all programs appear to run fine.
I have however, noticed a few desktop and taskbar glitches which I'm not sure is a hardware or software related graphics issue. These are 3 examples of what I've noticed.

1) If I use my mouse and try to drag a desktop icon from A to B (say), the icon always snaps back to point A. A few seconds later it does move to point B.
2) If I click on the ^ "show hidden icons" in the task bar, a transparent window opens but no icons appear.
If I click my mouse button repeatedly within the window, the icons eventually populate. If I click on one of these icons, there's a delay again and the program or task it opens is usually quite "laggy".
3) If I click my mouse on the "File Explorer" icon pinned to my task bar, a blank window initially appears on the desktop. Again, after a few more mouse clicks and a couple of seconds later, the contents of my file structure appears in the window.

Here's how I correct the problem. With my mouse, I right click on the desktop. This opens a menu from which I select: graphics > options > resolution. Under resolution, I change the native resolution of my monitor from 1920x1080 to 1680 x1080.
After the monitor resets to the new resolution, I repeat the process and go back to my original (native) resolution. Doing this clears all my desktop and taskbar glitches. Unfortunately, whatever happens when I... Read more

Alright lets see how others view this situation.

I was given a flat screen through a friend through the family (they asked if there was anyone mechanically inclined and it got sorted to me ). They were told that the back-light was out and that there was no way to fix it by several places (I wasn't told where but I doubt that they checked at all). So it was going to be my first attempt at fixing one. Just before I was going to take the cover off (as in the outside screws had already been removed by me at that point) I figured I may as well plug it in to see is it was really the back-light. So I plugged the power in, a screen popped up "No video source detected" or something along those lines. wow I thought back-light was fine. anyway few days passed (hooked it up to my computer worked like a charm) then guess what back-light went out.... I determined this because I can see ever so faintly that there is a message on it (removed connection to computer) I couldn't read it but could see that it is trying to be displayed).

Few days later ordered a replacement cold cathode fluorescent lamp, (no I didn't realize at the time that there was 4 in the monitor, mistake on my part as the shipping cost slightly more then a single lamp). anyway pulled the thing apart carefully (broke a few plastic tabs but only used to keep the front screen attached). A while later and about 25 screws I finally got to the ccfl sub assemblies (2 of them having 2 lamps apiece top an... Read more

Hello All,I just got my X1 Carbon back from a warranty dealer (SSD had to be replaced).I re-installed a fresh Windows 10 on it, then went on to download the specific drivers from Lenovo's Download Page. I also updated the BIOS, and the latest "Hardware Scan" resulted in no problems. Still, I can't get the Finger Print Reader to work again. It does not appear under "Device Manager", the "Hardware Scan" does not even seem to try finding it, and under "User Account", Windows 10 informs me that "Windows Hello is not available on this device".On the other hand: Device Manager does list an "Unknown Device" in the "USB Hubs" Category branch. The property page says that "This device has been disabled as it was reporting an error (Code: 43)". Yes, I tried the "update drivers" trick, including rebooting and everything...  I'm not sure if I have missed doing / trying something in particular when it comes to Software. Any clues? My other suspicion would be that the Finger Print Sensor somehow got screwed up while my X1 Carbon got its SSD replaced. Anything else I could try to find out? Or should I just put the thing back in its parcel and return it to the Service Center? Thanks for any help!

Answer:X1 Carbon 2016: Finger Print Reader not recognized; is it a hardware or a software issue?

Reboot and press F1 to enter BIOS Setup.  Then change to the Security -> Fingerprint page, and choose the item about "Reset Fingerprint Data".  Is it successful?
As a general rule, if resetting it in BIOS is successful, you're having a software problem.
If resetting it in BIOS results in some error (like "fingerprint sensor not found"), it's a hardware problem.

Hi everyone,

Yesterday I started getting a weird problem with my screen, the entire screen has a red colored overlay/tint and I have no idea what the issue might be. I use dual monitors and it will only happen on one monitor, switching the cables around doesn't help but if I switch the cables around it will change monitor (it only affects the monitor that is set as main).

Here's what it looks like:

The OS is Windows 7 64-bit and the graphics card is Nvidia GeForce 9800 GX2

Also one thing to note, last night I switched the cables around for a while to test different things and it ended up without any problems for a few hours, but later on it returned.

Anyone know how I can troubleshoot this further or have seen this issue before?

Thanks a lot!

Answer:Red Tint on the screen, driver or hardware issue?

Hi swirishninja and Welcome to TSF,

This issue is most likely hardware related. The main cause would be that either a PIN on the vga/dvi connector has been bent/broke, or one of the female-connectors on the graphic card is broke.

Could you please confirm this and see if it's any of the two connections on your graphic card that this seems to be related to? It should only be from one of them, or from one of the monitors nomatter the switch, if you know what I mean.

Hey guys, ive recently (Within the past 2 or 3 months) been having 'black-screen' crashes during games (Mainly Everquest 2 and Boodline champions) increasinly more consistently. Crashing never happened untill a couple months ago and this week it has become noticably alot worse.

Heres my computer specs:

Processor: Intel core i7 920 (Stock clocked at 2.67ghz)
Motherboard: Gigabyte Ex58-UD5
Ram: 6gb Corsair Dominator
Graphic Card: Nvidia GTX295 (Stock clocked)
PSU: Corsair HX 850W

Now bearing in mind this whole system is pushing on 3 years, was built on October 21st of 2009, it may just be that one of the parts (My suspicion is the graphic card) is failing now.

Ive ran an incredible amount of tests to try and pinpoint what exactly is causing this issue to almost no avail.

I have ran Memtest from HCI design with 7 or 8 instances of it open testing 800 or so meg of ram a time and left it to finish and came back with no errors, so guessing the ram is fine.

I ran IntelBurnTest a few times and it came back with no errors which i could see, which i hope eliminates my CPU being faulty.

I don't know really if the issue is behind Windows Update.

After a friend returned my netbook, after a few hours of use, the keyboard went nuts. Occasionally it will work fine, sometimes some keys won't work or the "Alt"/"Ctrl" key pressed. It is an eMachines netbook, m355.

I installed Windows 10 UA on Acer Aspire v5, after some reboots, the keyboard went nuts too! So I assumed it was Windows Updates' fault - both are Acer brands.

I downgraded to Windows 8.1 (format and clean install), but still, the keyboard went nuts on BOTH netbooks.

Lastly I disabled Windows Update after another clean install... but still, the keyboard will not work sometimes.

Are both Netbooks experiencing hardware issues?

There is no specific keyboard drivers for both models, only chipset drivers.

When I'm doing something graphically demanding like a video game my computer crashes to a black screen and a buzzing coming from my speakers, and I have to hard reset. It use to only do it when doing games like ArmaII but now it does it in minecraft and BF2. I have cleaned the inside of my computer, and I have checked temperatures in BIOS and 3rd party, and they are in a good range. I have done a clean install of windows 8 and re-installed all my drivers. So I am sure this is a hardware problem. I made a custom PC build from a few older parts and I am having screen tearing issues.
Build is:

AMD fx8120 8 core processor

Coolermaster Hyper TX3 (I think)

PNY 1333mhz (2 x 4gb) Sticks

Asus M5A78L-MLX Plus amd micro atx mobo

2tb Segate Baraccuda Hard drive

Kentek 850w Power Supply (not modular)
I have no GPU installed. Only the graphics coming from the AMD processor.

There are lines flickering and scanning up monitor. It?s not something that I can?t photograph well but you can clearly see it when you sit down at the pc.

Here is an example

There seems to be a correlation of when I move the mouse (ex Clicking and holding and dragging a point on the desktop causes the lines to go quicker and be more pronounced)
Things I have checked.

Fresh install of Windows 7

Updated all of the drivers

Checked the Hard Drive with multiple programs like Sea Tools

VGA Cable

Different Monitor

Different Outlets

Interference Possibilities
I am really unsure of what else I can do to trouble shoot. Let me know if I can provide any more information to help solve.

My Windows XP box started having an issue where it would freeze up randomly, then the next day it wouldn't turn on at all. I tested a little farther, and it wouldn't even get to the BIOS POST most of the time. I removed the peripherals and tried again, seemed to give the same problem, but after a couple times it started up.

After it started up, I opened a browser and the screen froze and I noticed some artifacting on the screen. I haven't tried it yet, but I don't think swapping out the graphics card would be the problem as, most of the time, it doesn't even make it to the POST.

Any ideas on where to go next with this issue? I'm thinking something may be loose or shorting.. I'm just not sure what to test next.

The X240's all work perfectly fine on all our other projectors just not this particular model. When I connect an x240 by VGA to the projector it will sometimes connect and disconnect straight away or not connect at all. How I get it to workEven then it will disconnet after sometime)- Toggling through the options with F7 on Duplicate mode (takes 5-10 trys till I get it working- Manually going through screen resolution options on desktop works 50% of the time- Installed latest video card drivers, going through Intel?s HG Graphics options is also 50% of the time will work- Restarting Netbook with VGA plugged in doesn't do anything As soon as I plug it in it should just work and duplicate the screen like it does on every other projector. The montior on vga connection will not display correctly. When you pull up a window on the vga connected monitor, it will out-stretch the whole screen, no matter what resolution setting. Adjusting monitor settings will not overcome this window expansion. I have attempted the following to fix:
* Switched vga cable to different monitor - same outcome
* Changing resolution and output settings - no change
* Swapping out vga cable - no change
* Removing monitor and intel graphics drivers and reinstalling - same outcome
* Installing monitor specific drivers from samsung - no change
* Testing within Lenovo Solution Center - no problems
* Upgrading Lenovo Solution Center - caused the program to quit working altogether
* Trying a combination of vga + Dvi and vga + Dvi-d - same issue
* Upgraded the Pro Dock firmware - still nothing
* Swapping out Pro Dock with different Pro Dock - same issue
* Plugging same setup directly into my old X220 & base, and both monitors/connections work flawlessly
Im at a complete loss other than this has to be another firmware issue with the Pro Dock.

Ok, basically here is my problem.

My screen brightness won't go above 70 on the brightness bar slider.

The reason I know my screen can be brighter is because this JUST started happening recently. (well like three months, but I haven't had time to deal with it until now)

And anyway- heres 'symptoms'

The Windows Mobility doesn't allow the slider to go more than 70

Doing FN + F7 for screen brightness to increase using Toshiba hotkeys thing it doesn't go brighter. (it works but not more than 70)

Right as I am restarting right as it boots up it is much brighter then after like a minute it goes to the 70 brightness mark.

It hasn't always done this.

Is this purely hardware issue with Toshiba? Is this like preventing the screen from being 'too' bright?

How can I get it to 100? On restart right before it dims the screen is much much nicer / brighter... It would be nice to have it brighter all the time..

I could do a system re-install... but I'm right in the middle of my school year and I don't really have time at this time...

Thanks for ideas and help.

I haven't been able to use my computer for the last few days because it either crashes and reboots straight away or just freezes at the motherboard splash screen. I've tried starting it with no USB devices plugged in, taking out the RAM as a test (I get beeps so I'm guessing mobo works?), removing my gtx 480 and using integrated graphics (mobo is "Gigabyte Ultra Durable 3" (?)), clearing CMOS, and lastly replacing the CMOS battery (those dang things are like 5 dollars each). None of these actions have changed anything. I have progressed to a couple of different screens very rarely. One displays the message "BIOS is updating ec firmware" and the other shows "checksum error" "post error".My processor is an AMD Phenom II X6 1055T and power supply is TX750. If anyone has any ideas on how to fix this or has been through something similar I'd love your help. Thank you.

Answer:Possible hardware issue? PC failing to boot. Freezing at MB splash screen.

Try booting off of a single ram stick of the pair. If you only had a single stick to begin with then see if you can borrow one from another computer either your own or a friends.Try booting with hard drive not connected this way your not going to get any boot level error messages from a drive issue etc.Try a Linux Live Disc such as burn Knoppix or Linux Mint 17.1 32-bit cinnamon to a DVD and try to boot off the DVD direct and see if it works... * Do this if when disconnecting your Hard Drive it complains about missing OS.Any other information to share about this system such as anything strange that happened leading up to the failure or a recent upgrade that might have gone bad etc, or any damage from lightning, brown out, or power surge etc.

Answer:Satellite Pro A300 - windows blue screen / says it's a hardware issue

Generally speaking the BSOD is a product of software or hardware problem.
So it?s not easy to say what?s wrong exactly.

Just view questions;
Did you try a new OS installation?
Did you update any drivers (especially graphic card driver?)
Is your BIOS up to date?
Did you notice a higher internal temperature?
Are the cooling modules free of dust?

Please check this firstly!

We have a new software product that we are releasing as a beta, in order to get valuable feedback from our customers who might be interested in trying it.
The software is called Lenovo InstantOn Beta and here's how it works:
Today, Windows 8 running on laptops, by default, goes to Sleep mode when the lid is closed.  This causes your programs to stop running, and your internet/VPN connection is dropped.  What InstantOn does, is change the meaning of the lid close action "Sleep".  Instead of immediately going to sleep mode when the lid is closed, InstantOn will make the system stay awake for 1 hour.  During this hour, the CPU is set to minimum speed, and the speakers/microphone/touchpad/LCD are turned off.  However your network connection and apps stay alive, they just run at a very slow speed.
InstantOn mode uses more battery than the system in Sleep mode, but less than the system that is simply idle without InstantOn.  The goal is to make a laptop behave more like a tablet (e.g. connected standby) where it can be resumed instantly, at least for 1 hour.
Currently, the software is only supported on Windows 8, and only on X240/X240s.  The software requires special BIOS support that only exists in these 2 systems.  If you have X240/X240s, and try it, let me know how it works for you.  Thanks!

Hello, I have a thinkpad X240. The Trackpoint button (nipple) has never worked since I've had it. The computer used to have Windows 8.1, however now it has been upgraded to Windows 10. The trackpoint button still did not work after the upgrade. I have tried updating the BIOS to the latest version, with still no change. The keyboard was recently replaced by a Lenovo tech as some keys stopped working properly, which means that the trackpoint button was replaced too. However, it still does not work. I have tried completely removing and re-installing the Synaptics driver from the lenovo website. The Trackpoint button shows as "Enabled" in the BIOS. Below is a screenshot of the "Thinkpad" tab in the mouse section of the control panel. I am guessing that there is supposed to be another option under the "Pointing options" dropdown menu which allows the Trackpoint button to be enabled.  If anybody has any suggestions as to how I can get it working, that would be appreciated.  Thank you

Answer:Thinkpad X240 Trackpoint issue

Hi, welcome to the forum.
I think you already did what is necessary by reinstaing the synaptics driver.
You tried the Synaptics ThinkPad UltraNav Driver for Windows 10 (32-bit, 64-bit) - ThinkPad / / 10/27/2016, right?
Since you machine was serviced it may be that something is wrong with the keyboard or the installation of it.
If you feel confortable open it up you can check the Hardware Maintenance Manual - ThinkPad X240 and check how the keyboard get installed to see if all the cables are connected.  I'm not sure if page 89 shows what needs to be plugged for the keyboard. (I don't have that model)
But since this looks like more hardware related, I think you should open a formal ticket.

Hi all, I've just realised that after upgrading to Windows 10 geolocation on my ThinkPad x240 stopped working. I tried to find similar issue on the forum but failed. What I observed and tried so far: I am sure it worked under Windows 8.1The toggle in Windows location settings is set to Off and greyed-out.I reinstalled n5321gw driver. I can see it under Sensors section in Device Manager. Driver version tried to install the driver before with System Update but it failed couple of times with fatal error, but from what I saw it was trying to install the same version of the driver.Cellular data works fine (not sure if that's relevant). Is there anything you'd suggest? If there's anything I can check that might be helpful just let me know. Thanks in advance!S.

Hi Guys, When trying to encrypt our Lenovo X240's/T440's we always have to firstly uninstall the Intel SmartConnect Software to ensure it can encrypt correctly. If we try to encrypt when the SmartConnect Driver/Software is installed we get a message Stating "Sophos Safeguard error 5002 PendingFileRenameOperations" apparently this is something to do with the way the driver writes itself into the registry? We use Sophos Safeguard encryption. What we normally do is image the Lenovo X240's then join to the domain and then do encryption but at the moment we have to uninstall the Intel Smartconnect software, Encrypt and then reinstall it. Any ideas?

I'm getting some inconsistencies with two finger scrolling, where the touch pad doesn't always recognize my two spread fingers, so it doesn't consistently scroll in applications. Anyone else? (This is in Windows 8.1 for what it's worth.)

Hi, I have a X240 think pad laptop, it came with Windows 7 x64 installed as standard, with upgrade disks to Windows 8 (even though no disk drive). Anyway, Windows update killed the laptop, so I had to wipe the C Drive and re-install windows 7. However now I cannot activate this version of windows. I just keep getting the DNS error when trying to activate. I was under the impression that this version was an OEM version and would auto activate.  I still have the Lenovo recovery D:\ Drive but don't know how to pull the Activation key from it. I have used a key finder but the key it gave me again didn't work when trying to activate. What can I do please?

Answer:X240 - Windows 7 - Activation issue

Hi,and welcome to the community.Perhaps the OS reduction you have installed isn't the same as was preloaded. OEM isn't enough. You can't use yourself the OEM reduction activation key as a set of symbols for manual activation, you can backup it using 3rd party tools. Activation key is stored in BIOS SLIC, it's inaccessible for the user.If you have Lenovo preloaded image recovery media or its .wim archives on your drive you could perform laptop recovery to the factory state. The steps depends of what you have, your skills etc.

When powering on the laptop the battery and power lights appear fine.  However, the machine remains completely silent with a completley black screen for almost 3 minutes until, eventually, the BIOS screen messages will begin to appear.  Nothing at all for like 3-4 minutes.

My laptop has suddenly developed a screen issue. Out of the blue one day I noticed the bottom of my screen start to fade to white up the screen. While this would happen, the screen would become unresponsive. The computer was still working behind the scenes, just the display was messing up.
Over a day or so, it stopped the fade to white issue and just started freezing up with white horizontal lines across the screen.
I can get it to work by adjusting the lid to a different angle or pressing in on the back of the lid. Once it's in a good position the computer works perfectly, I just can't adjust the screen in any way. Slight movement (from typing etc) does not make a difference, but actually moving the lid freezes is up. Otherwise the display is perfect.

Not sure if a video of the issue would help.....I will upload and edit with link in a minute.....

Here we go -

Answer:Lenovo T61 screen issue

Hook up an external monitor. If that works fine, it is the lcd cord that is loose.
