Completely unsolvable: Cannot change screen brightness after I upgraded my ThinkPad's display.

Question: Completely unsolvable: Cannot change screen brightness after I upgraded my ThinkPad's display.

I have a ThinkPad X240 which came with a 1366x768 TN panel, I hated it and so after a while I upgraded it to an IPS 1080p display. It works great and looks fantastic except it's stuck on max brightness inside of Windows 8.1. I cannot change the brightness inside of Intel HD graphics settings or inside of programs like Display Tuner. It doesn't work in Windows 10 either. The weird thing is, I can change the brightness just fine inside of Ubuntu. I've tried uninstalling the Intel HD drivers and reinstalling them, I've tried switching the drivers to the Microsoft Basic Display Adapter, and none has worked. I feel like I've installed every single version of Intel's Graphics Drivers and that I've done everything and it still won't change the bloody brightness. NOTHING has worked except to just use Ubuntu, which is not an adequate solution. I've even gone as far as to update my BIOS and reset it to defaults, I've even pulled the CMOS battery. I've tried the version of the Intel HD driver from Lenovo for the X240 and I've installed the monitor.ini files. I've also just learned that during the Windows Boot Logo, the FN keys WILL change the brightness, but as soon as Windows is done booting, it stops working. This, coupled with the fact that brightness control works in Ubuntu means that this must be something related to Windows right? Brightness control works in BIOS. I've even gone so far as to try and change the brightness through CMD using powercfg according to this post. http://superuser.com/questions/472081/can-i-force-a-greater-screen-brightness-from-windows-command-p... I'm really starting to lose patience now as it has been like this for 3 weeks and I can't be using Ubuntu all of the time, I honestly do not know what to do, it seems like this problem is completely unsolvable. Edit: I even got so frustrated that I switched off the laptop, installed the old screen, booted up Windows, and the brightness worked. Then (I know this is a bad idea) WHILE IT WAS ON, I pulled the old display and put connected the new one. And lo and behold, the brightness **bleep**ING worked in windows on the new display.

Preferred Solution: Completely unsolvable: Cannot change screen brightness after I upgraded my ThinkPad's display.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Completely unsolvable: Cannot change screen brightness after I upgraded my ThinkPad's display.

HiDid you install Lenovo Power Management Driver and Hotkey Features Integration package? Also, the trouble might be caused by LCD cable for FHD screen missing. Those x240 cables - for HD and FHD screens - differ. I can't explain why brightness control works within BIOS Setup menu, under Ubuntu, after "hot swap".

Hello, I have a Thinkpad X140E with Windows 7 (64-bit) and recently the On-Screen Display for volume and brightness keys stopped functioning (no on-screen display). I tried uninstalling the OSD through Programs and Features and reinstalling the latest available Hotkey Features Integration but it didn't change a thing. Any help is greatly appreciated.

I recently upgraded my W700 to a clean Win7 Pro x64 install, downloaded the latest Win7 drivers from the Lenovo website, and did a manual install of all of them. Mostly there were no problems, however the OSD for mute, volume up/down, and brightness did not work. Here is the page for the Hotkey Features Integration package, which contains the OSD program: Hotkey Features Integration for Windows 8 (32-bit, 64-bit), 7 (32-bit, 64-bit), Vista (32-bit, 64-bi... The problem appears to be a bug in latest version of the OSD program, for the W700. I collected data on the various versions of the OSD utility; see below (I have used the overall package version as a reference, although the OSD program itself has a different version). Here is the fix: 1) Install the latest Hotkey Features Integration package. This gets the latest other packages, plus a broken version of OSD.2) Manually uninstall the OSD program (in Control Panel:Uninstall); reboot.3) Download and install the Hotkey Features Integration package version 3.85.0000. This is last version which works fully with the W700. Run the package installer, the run the installer itself. Make sure that only the OSD component is selected; run setup; reboot. That should fix it. It appears that the bug also exists in Win XP. Here is the info I have on the various versions: 3.33.0002 - OSD Works with W7003.81.0100 - OSD Works with W7003.84.2000 - OSD Works with W7003.85.0000 - OSD Works with W700 <&l... Oh boy, where do I start? Well! Yesterday, I felt like hooking up my laptop to a TV for the sake of seeing if I actually could connect the two with a HDMI cable (as instructed by HP themselves). Shut off my laptop, shut off the TV, turned on the TV and set it to the right source, then booted up the PC- "No signal." I attempt to project the PC screen over with F4 (not holding the Function (Fn) key down, as that does not bring up the "Project" menu). It is glad to tell me that "Your PC is not able to project screens. Please update your driver or video card". That's fine, I'll try that. A few minutes later, and I have Device Manager open, opting to have Windows search for updates under Display Adapters for my Intel HD Graphics 5500. It claims that there are no updates. Okay, but there's still a caution sign next to Intel HD Graphics 5500 and it claims to have a Code 43 error. I go to the Intel site, look up some things, and find out that there are customized drivers for my laptop after getting an error stating that it could not install. Makes sense. After a bit more searching, I manage to find the correct driver. Even though it stated that the drivers on my current machine were newer (that wouldn't make any sense, I thought, since how else would I have the drivers I have now (unless they're private or something...?)), I replaced the driver with the latest version on the HP site for my PC (This one right here). I restarted as asked. It was at this point, I thi... Read more

Answer:Brightness option completely missing, Display Adapter claims...

Hi: The only suggestion I can offer would be to see if running the system restore utility fixes the problem. Pick a restore point to a time before you decided to hook up your TV to your laptop. Otherwise, you may have to back up any files you don't want to lose and do a factory reset of the notebook, since you have already tried to reinstall the graphics driver without success.

Additional to my other issue with the display brightness I've got also this question: In battery mode it seems that the display brightness is automaticly adjusted by the lightness of the screen content. For exampe if I start a program with a dark background the display becomes a little bit darker. In contrast, a brighter background makes the screen a little brighter. It isn't that strong like a tap on F7 or F8 - just a little bit. Of course it's a nice feature. But for me who uses a lot of applications at the same time it is a bit annoying. Can someone give me a hint where I can turn that feature off? Didn't find anything in the energy settings. Thomas

After updating my Thinkpad T540p, I cannot adjust the brightness in anyway. This is a problem because the screen is too birght and eats up battery. It appears the only way to adjust the brightness is to use Intel HD Graphics, which isn't so convenient. Fn keys don't work.changing the brightness on the Power Manager settings doesn't work. There is no brightness option on Windows Power Manager. help. I have Intel HD Graphics 4600 10.18.10.3960I have Lenovo Power Manager 6.66.3 Edit: In fact, I think it's posisble that Power Manager to just outright no longer works.

Hello! On my Lenovo Think Pad E130, usually I change the brightness of the display just by pushing the keys, that would be F7 and F8 (but conveniently, they changed it to functions like adjusting the brightness as first function). Suddenly, that doesn't work anymore even though the other keys for sound and so on still work normally. The display is quite dark (both when I use it with the battery or with the power supply) and I don't know how to change that. It didn't work by changing the energy saver option either. Thanks for your help!

I used the thinkvantage system update software to update my power manager and hotkey on screen display features, once upgraded/updated I can no longer control the brightness with the keyboard buttons or any other method. I cannot change power manager profiles either, the only way i resolved this was to reload my pc to its original factory settings thinking the problem was only with power manager. After reloading the pc i Didn't update power manager but updated the hotkey on screen display features with the system update from thinkvantage and now im almost back to square one, now I don't want to update my power manager. The only possible way I can get the brightness to go slightly lower is to activate battery stretch. Is there a bug fix for this from lenovo because i've looked and i only see bug fixes for the power manager, however they are old and don't do anything for my system (and i actually liked the new power manager features)

Hi, Does anyone know how I can change the default brightness to maximum so that in BIOS and at boot time I can see the display while I am in a room with lots of natural light? It bother me a lot as while I boot or enter in BIOS I can't increase the brightness from keyboard till the OS software drivers are not loaded.   Please let me know. Thank you,C.

Welcome to the forum! Have you tried adjusting your display settings in BIOS, should be under "configuration">"display" and then "brightness"... set it to "high", press F10 to save and exit. Then you can decrease it when running the OS if you need to. BTW, your battery life will be affected by this. Hope this helps.

Hi Dimm0k,

Welcome to Lenovo Community!

As per the query we understood that you are facing issue with Display brightness on your ThinkPad X240.

How do you check if the brightness key (F5/F6) is working or not, because to use that key you have to simultaneously press Fn+F5/Fn+F6, then to if it is not working then check it in BIOS mode once.

Uninstall the current graphic driver from Control panel ? program & feature option and update all the drivers and application from thinkvantage system update utility.

Hope this helps.

ThinkPad T61 (7665-11U) display problem. The display always appears after boot. However, occationally the display suffers either of two problems, seemingly with no cause: 1) "flutter"-- where bightness quickly cycles, alternates from side-to-side; or,2) it will go dark--the image is barely visible and the laptop responds to input (mouse, keyboard, etc). Either problem is intermittant. The display works normally otherwise. The fan is operational and the laptop does not run "hot". In fact, either problem cannot be induced by:-  open/closing the display, or pivoting hte hinges;-  gentle flexing of the laptop case;-  pressure on the keyboard and palm rests.. This is a hardware problem--not a software problem. I opened the laptop and inspected relevent ribbon connections, which appeared normal. A keyword search of this forum and others reveals all variety of display issues afflicting ThinkPad laptops, but I find no anecdotes identical to mine. Anyone experience either or both of these problems--and successfully identy their cause and repair them?

Answer:ThinkPad T61 Display Problems -- Brightness Flutter, or Goes Dark

Welcome to the forum!

The only foolproof way of testing the machine in question would be with another complete, *known good* LCD assembly. That would point to either a screen or graphics card deficiency...

My bet would be along the lines of a graphics card going haywire once the machine warms up, but it's really difficult to say from a distance...

Good luck.

Change the Power Saver's settings! If you switch to battery, Power Saver will automatically change the profiles. In this case, the battery saver profile uses lower brightness. You can find Power Saver in the control panel.

Dragging the slider in the Windows Mobility Center does nothing. Changing the default brightness settings in the power plan settings does nothing. The keyboard shortcut for adjusting the brightness moves the sliders, but doesn't actually affect the display in the slightest.

I'm running Home Premium on a HP nx6325. The graphics adapter is the ATI x1150.

The display brightness thing worked perfectly under Windows XP. Is this a monitor driver problem or a graphics adapter driver problem? Or a Vista problem? I have the latest drivers for everything.

I did have to install older XP drivers for the touchpad to get the left+right=middle button thing working, so I'm thinking something similar would be required. But I'm somewhat scared of botching the whole system by installing bad monitor or graphics adapter drivers.

Hi, I just got my new W510 with a nvidia quadro FX 880M graphics card. The problem is that the display brightness turns to a minimum when I connect the AC adapter and cannot be changed.Neither fn + Home / End (allthough OSD works but brightness stays the same) nor any software tool work to increase brightness. Hi all, Is it possible to configure the X220 to NOT change bringness when I plug/unplug power? It's not good enough to set both battery and power to the same brightness, because I want to be able to change brightess. For example, if I'm working in a dark room, on battery, and I've set the brightness down low -- I don't want the brightness shooting back up if I plug it in. Is this not possible? Thanks!

Answer:Can X220 *NOT* change my display brightness?

I can't confirm but you should be able to set that in the power manager or make a profile for it.  Also to my knowledge, when you click the different profiles in the battery under windows, when it switches it should go to the last brightness level that you left it at so if you left it on 3 and then plug it back in, it should be 3 but play around with it. Power manager should let you set the brightness though. ~Novak

Hi people,

For some reason I can't discover, since yesterday I can't change the brightness on my deskop.
It's a Satelite L50-B-12G with Windows 8.1, 64 bit.

The function key (F2 and F3) don't move the scroll bar and when I try the same on the Control Panel it's the same:
it just doesn't change the brightness

At the same time when I'm with a office document open or in a web page, the cursor don's work as usual... it's slower to change from a cell to another cell in Excel for instance.
The sane hapen's with the page down key...

Can anyone help on this? It's becoming vey anoying.

Best regards
Jose

Answer:Satellite L50-B-12G - Can't change display brightness

How did you try to decreases or increases the display brightness?
Did you press the FN button additionally?

Well, as you said the F2 and F3 buttons decreases or increases the display brightness
The additional pressing of FN button depends on the special function key mode which can be found in:
Desktop Assist -> tools & utilities -> system settings -> keyboard

Enabled Special Function key mode allows you to use special functions without pressing the FN key!

Therefore I recommend checking this setting!

My 2 month old Thinkpad L512 display doesn't reach full brightness, except for a few seconds after bootup. Then it dims down to maybe 8 or so on a scale of 1-10. Which is often good indoors, but in a bright situation, I could use the extra screen brightness. The screen correctly dims significantly (to maybe 2 or so on a scale of 1-10) after siting idle for a few minutes, as specified in the Power settings. But when it recovers, it is at full brightness for 10 seconds or so, then dims back down to 8 and stays there until I repeat the cycle. I have poked around in the Display and Power settings, and the display is set to 100% there. Any ideas? Thanks! David

Got Toshiba Satellite l40-12k laptop.
Running Windows XP Pro. The problem is that I can't change display brightness even with hotkey utility installed for Win Vista. But if I am in bios these hotkeys work just fine. Even when I was booted from gParted Live CD these hotkeys worked fine.

But when I boot in Win Xp they stop working. So if I want to change brightness I have to reboot or hibernate and use the moment to change display brighness level because he remembers the last brightness setted up. So whats the problem? Don't tell about hardware optimized for Vista, but not for other OS.

When there will be drivers avaible vor Win XP? Ok I understand it's MS who has the problem to make a normal OS, but hey guys is it so big problem to make it working on XP?

The funny thing is that everything else is working just fine and all the drivers I needed I found in Intel homepage. So can I hope on some user support because now I know it's not hardware problem because even from a gParted Live CD these hotkeys were working?

P.S. Sorry for my bad english.

Unfortunately, you are right. The XP is not compatible with the BIOS on the L40.
Many different Toshiba series supports two different BIOS for XP and for Vista.

The Fn keys does not work because the BIOS does not support the XP fully.

I think you will be not able to use the FN key until the BIOS and the necessary drivers for XP will be released.

for changing the display brightness. Anyone Anyone? Bueler?

Answer:Portege 3480: How to change display brightness

Hello,

did you already tried the fn-key combination? I am not sure how it is with your portege but it should be like FN-F6 and FN-F7 for changing the display brightness.
Unfortunately there are no XP-drivers (or just the sound driver) for that machine to change it manually.
You should try the FN-Key combination, there should be a sign which looks like a little "sun" with an up/down arrow in front of.

After some time i cannot press the eco key, it says some options cannot change..

Now ive got the problem.. if i press FN-F6 oder F7 , nothing changed to my Brightness.. the display is still at full Brightness..

Can you give me a tip, what can i do to change that?

Answer:Cannot change display brightness on my Qosmio X770

You use own preinstalled operating system, nobody of us know how you have done this.
You didn?t inform us what you have done exactly and now you want some tip.

Sorry buddy but if you want to have serious discussion here please offer more relevant information.

Generally speaking if you have installed all drivers and Toshiba specific tools and utilities on the right way it must work. As I already wrote I don?t know what have you done exactly. Maybe you mis something.

One more thing: before you have upgraded OS have you crated recovery DVD following Toshiba?s recommendation? I mean not that you come later here and cry because HDD recovery installation will not work anymore.

Hello. My device is Lenovo Thinkpad P40 Yoga (WQHD-version, Windows 10 Pro on build 16299.192). A couple of days ago System Update 5 notified me about a pending BIOS update. I then installed LENOVO R05ET75W (1.53), 2017-12-20 and rebooted. However, some time after that I started noticing that whenever you switch between full-screen applications from, let's say, the one that uses a dark background (for example: MyTube from Microsoft Store for W10) to a browser window which has white background the screen changes brightness gradually within the next two seconds, as if it has been dimmed upon displaying darker colors. This is extremely irritating to the eyes, as you can literally see the brightness getting increased in a few short jumps and this was not the case prior to that BIOS update if I am not mistaken. The actual brightness slider remains the same! It's just the additional effect of switching from dark to bright. I haven't updated anything else besides BIOS in the last two weeks and first noticed this about a day ago. I think the BIOS update came two days ago - unfortunately it does not show up in Installed Updates history (as the BIOS update opened a separate process and did not close the System Update window prior to the reboot), so I can't say for sure, but other than that the latest update I installed was on December 30th and I haven't been experiencing the issue I described above up until recently. The automatic brightness is turned off ... Can anybody help me where i can download it? ( link pls. )

Answer:Satellite A60: Need utility to change the display brightness control

Hi

You need drivers! Why you don't post which notebook you have?
However, you can change the display brightness by using the FN keys (FN+F6 and FN+F7).
Check the Toshiba driver page and download the necessary drivers

I have recurring problem and can no longer change display brightness on my Thinkpad Carbon X1.   First occurred after updates in Win 8.1 (64 bit).  I updated to Win 10, and still have the same problem.   Display brightness bars are no longer displayed on screen, and I cannot change brightness using any means.  Function keys and windows utility does not work. I've deleted video drivers and downloaded direct from Lenovo support/driver website.  Also tried downloading video drivers from Intel website.   Nothing works. Occasionally I've seen the display brightness bars displayed on my screen (after deleting all drivers).   But never get the actual functionality back. Is it possible to get a factory build of windows V8.1 to start over?

Hello everyone,

I have a problem with my Toshiba Satellite L855-124 PSKACE laptop.
After upgrading to Windows 8, I can't change the brightness backlight of the laptop screen.

There seems to be an error in the graphical driver.
When I install the Windows 7 graphical AMD driver under compatibility, it works again but bugs out on other areas.

Anyone have any ideas?
Even after using the upgrade assistant provided by Toshiba it does nothing.
Also the drivers for my laptop are poorly updated. Dating back to 2012.

I have also called tech support, they told me that a driver team will be fixing the issue.
That was 2 months ago.

Is there anyone from Toshiba that can help me with this please?

Thank you.

Answer:Satellite L855-124 can't change display brightness after Win 8 upgrade

>When I install the Windows 7 graphical AMD driver under compatibility, it works again but bugs out on other areas.

So it looks like a graphic card driver issue.
Did you try the Win 8 64bit *v8.982.7* graphic card driver from the Toshiba EU page?

My English is not perfekt, but I hope you know what I mean and somebody can help me.

Answer:Satellite M30-404: can't change display brightness and THCI.dll is missing

Hi Tobias,

THCI.dll is the code for the Toshiba Function Key application which is used on your notebook to control the Fn key selection. You will need to install the Toshiba Control Functions utility from your Tools and Utilities CD (or download it from the Toshiba Download Page).

My X61t is on a very low display brightness whenever it comes out of sleep. I can't change any display brightness settings in Vista (SP1 Ultimate) for the various power options (there is no setting even in advanced options). I have to press the utility button and click on the increase brightness (I only use the system in slate mode). I have gone into the bios and changed he display setting from normal to high. This only happens in battery mode. Minor issue but it is annoying. I've tried to upgrade the display driver but Windows says it's up to date. Any help would be appreciated. Basically I want the default brightness to be around 80% as opposed to 30% when coming out of sleep.  Thank's, philip

Hi! my ThinkPad shows a strange behavior... Suddenly the screen brightness was reduced by the system. Brightness is "15" but it is darker than before. I can not find any option to raise brightness!!!! I am using a Lenovo power supply unit. It is annoying to use the ThinkPad at daylight. Really exhausting looking at a screen thats too dark. Any tips? Regards, nightwatch83

Answer:Screen Brightness (ThinkPad Edge 15)

nightwatch83,

Some basic questions...

If you reboot to windows and are on AC is the screen still dim?   Does it respond at all to screen brightness increase / decrease settings?

If you restart and go into BIOS on AC, how bright is the display?  Any different than in Windows?

If the problem seems isolated in Windows, I would reload the power manager and hotkey drivers and recheck the settings in power manager for screen brightness.

Best regards,

Mark

On my Thinkpad, the brightness is to low, even if I increase it to maximum. The only thing that seems to get the brightness to work correctly is connecting the laptop to an AC adapter.  What could my issue be?

Answer:Screen Brightness to Low on High on Thinkpad T60

The maximum brightness in battery mode is less than in AC-mode to save battery power. You can  increase it in the BIOS under Config - Display - Brightness setting the value to "high" (see explanation text on the right side after selecting that item).

But it is like when you close the laptop and the screens turns off, it is almost like that, I need a lantern to see what appears in the laptop, but besides that everything else works fine. Hi I have a brand new E520 and I love it. But there's a quite annoying problem with the screen: it tends to change brightness (it gets brighter or darker in 3 or 4 steps). Could anyone tell me how to fix this? Thanks.

Answer:Thinkpad E520 screen brightness problem

My E520, which I bought about 2 weeks ago, also has a problem nearly like you. When screen returns after turning off for energy saver, its contrast becomes extremely high. I have to wait for a few minutes for it to turn back to normal. Besides, one more symptom is that if I use the buttons for decrease brightness, the lowest level is 2, not 1. I found that it's the Thinkpad Video Features ( Intel Hurom River GT1/GT2) for Windows 7 64 bit. I restored my laptop to before the time I install it, and everything's ok. By the way, it seems that Lenovo usually has problems about driver, isn't it?

Hi all, I would like to share my recent experience of Thinkpad X1 carbon (4th 2016) screen brightness problem, and how this problem been solved. The laptop cames good and the F5 and F6 function for screen brightness adjusting is OK. Other methods, like in the setting menu and battery menu,  to adjust the brightness are all OK.After one hour or one day or some short time, you will find you cannot adjust the brightness. Even the battery & power options are not working. The problem comes from the driver. First I thought it is the problem of driver of monitor (wide viewing angle high density flexview display 2560x1440 driver). I uninstall, update, change...but none of them work. Finally, I find it is the problem of intel hd graphics 520 . There is another evidence that during the time only this driver of intel hd graphics 520 has been updated automaticly to the latest version! So I uninstall and roll back to the version 20.19.15.4331 and the problem is solved.I did not check the lates version of this driver. But I am sure that the latest version of intel hd graphics 520 has conflict with the lenovo driver for screen brightness! I am sure there are other people face the same problem after the update of hd graphics 520 driver. Any engineer please check it!

hi filsns,

Welcome to the Forums.

Just to verify, are you using the Lenovo Energy Management v1.5.0.17 ? If yes, can you uninstall that version and install the one below:

Lenovo Power Management Driver for Windows 7 (64-bit)
v1.67.09.03

If that doesn't work, try this one:

Lenovo Energy Manager
v7.0.3.9

When finished, try toggling the brightness via F11/F12 (Fn+F11 / Fn+F12 if hotkey mode is disabled in the BIOS) or via the Intel HD Graphics Control Panel and observe.

Hey, Guys.

I just yesterday finished my new computer (16Gb RAM, i5-4470k, GTX 770, Win 8.1, etc.) and I just today realized that I cannot change the screen brightness. The button is grayed out and says "Unavailable" which I know cannot be possible.

Now, i have done my research and people say that the fix is to update your drivers through the Device Manager, and I have tried that to no avail. I have tried all possible combinations of "Display Adapters" and "Monitors" drivers. None work. I have been restarting my computer after every change and I have no idea what there is left to do.

One thing that I might add is that a lot of people remedy this problem by reverting their Intel Integrated drives back to an older version, but I do not have an option to change it's drivers. It shows up nowhere in the Device manager.

My eyes are burning as I am typing this and I would even go for a third-party brightness program (if that even exists).

Thanks in Advance,
Cam

I re-installed Windows 7 64-bit on my Thinkpad X201 (3249-2EU).  Let me tell you it runs a million times faster now!  But the problem is I re-installed all drivers and software, and now I cannot adjust the screen brightness or get on-screen display to fully work. There seems to be some conflict between the Hotkey software and the Power Manager/Power Management Driver. After reading forum posts in the W500 and W520 section I tried troubleshooting using their suggestions.  To troubleshoot I tried this:I uninstalled (in order) the display drivers, Power Manager software, power management drivers. I uninstalled Hotkey features and Utility Patch software.  Then, I re-installed power management drivers and Power Manager software.  At this point, I can adjust the screen brightness but there is no on-screen display showing the brightness. After I install the Hotkey software, I can no longer adjust screen brightness.  However, volume changes are displayed on-screen. Any suggestions on how I can adjust screen brightness, see screen brightness on-screen and see volume controls on-screen all at the same time??? Also, not sure if this is a related issue, but the bluetooth indicator light is always on.  I have uninstalled the Bluetooth drivers and changed settings so that it will not accept incoming bluetooth devices.  What gives?

Answer:x201 can't adjust screen brightness or get on-screen display working

Another thing to add: Windows Update keeps trying to do an "important" (i.e., not optional) update to "Thinkpad PM Device" and it keeps failing.  I'm guessing the Power Management (PM) device drivers are corrupted and it won't update now.  I've uninstalled, then re-installed the drivers and this update keeps failing.

I have just completed a clean install of Windows 7 Ultimate and all went well except for the screen brightness issue. Anyone have any ideas where I can simply increase this as I have searched everywhere for screen brightness, even BIOS for any setting for display. I have latest update to display driver. I have two other laptops and each shows much brighter than this one and I am surely disappointed in this display. Not sure if it is because this screen is touch enabled and also works off keyboard that could be the issue and a separate setting could be involved on the touch side of the display as it does work with a stylus pen or touch also. thanks and   I hope I can get this brightness to increase somewhat as it is too hazy for me.

I reformatted my X220i last night. I downloaded all the drivers via Lenovos website. Everything seems to work fine except a couple things; 1) This is the big one--the screen brightness buttons don't work. All of the other Fn keys work, so I'm unsure what the problem could be. Furthermore, I can't change the brightness by adjusting the power settings. it's stuck at a VERY low brightness level and I can barely see this text as I type it--super frustrating! 2) The display is showing in up in control panel as "Generic PnP Monitor"--perhaps the two issues are correlated? 3) Not a problem persay, but in WIE my graphics/gaming graphics scores a 1. I downloaded the drivers, so i have no clue why! Thanks guys. I really need to get this brightness thing figured out--any ideas/suggestions would be of great help to me.

I've bought a laptop that I've had for more than 4 months now, and within the last week have been unable to change the brightness of the screen (from the control panel or the FN keys). I've scoured the internet for an answer (and solution), but I've had no luck.

It's not the upgrade to 8.1 that did it because it worked until last week (8.1 was probably on my laptop). I've tried changing the display driver, which to some extent works (when the driver is changed, the brightness will change to the control panel setting). I want a better solution to doing that each time (I change my brightness often enough for that to be a problem). I've also tried rolling the driver back which did nothing.

Information: AMD-10 based Lenovo Win-8.1 laptop.

If you need any more information, please ask me for it!

Thanks,
Hex

Hi Hexillium and welcome to Eight Forums,
Ummm, have you messed up with start-up programs?.
Just give it a little check by going to Task Manager then start-up section and give me a screen shot.
I had this problem too and it could be because you disabled the driver from starting automatically upon boot-up, i had this disabled:

If you have the same program installed check if its disabled, if you don't give me a screen shot please.

I have an X100E and sometimes when it comes out of sleep I am unable to change the screen brightness. Pressing Fn-Del or Fn-Home just brings up the on-screen brightness indicator but it doesn't change. The only way I've found to be able to change brightness again is to reboot. It seems that it happens if it goes into sleep when plugged in and comes out on battery, or vice versa, but not always. There doesn't seem to be a correlation to uptime either. I've had it happen after an hour or two up and I've had it happen 7 days up. I am running Win7 Pro.

Happened today when I was at work, but slightly different. I unplugged my laptop and screen dimmed to 9, I put it into sleep and took it to work. Hi,  My Helix has suddenly stopped letting me change its screen brightness. It's currently stuck on a pretty dim setting. It was running fine yesterday up until the evening, when suddenly it just became dim. Fn+5 and Fn+6 won't do anything (no brightness bar shows up), and changing it manually from power options don't show any change. Any advice?

Answer:Helix Screen Brightness Won't Change

Have you run the Lenovo diagnostics to see it something shows up? Also, have you worked through all the Power settings via the control panel for how your screen shows on AC and on Battery power. Make sure the settings are right. You say you did, but try setting it to full low brightness in both AC and battery and see if it "frees" things up. One other area I would try, is to go into the bios and see if there might be a setting there. On the slider control in the charms, do you see a little lock symbol which indicates a brightness setting control is in operation (at least I believe it is) One last thing is to call tech support. Good luck

The first and only bug so far I have encountered with my P51: Out of the box, the machine is set with the Hybrid mode in BIOS, meaning it switches between the Intel GPU and the Nvidia Quadro M2200 (Optimus). I want my machine to always use the discrete GPU, so I switch to Discrete mode in the BIOS. This however means that you can no longer change the screen brightness of the internal screen, it is always set at 100 %. Definitely seems like a driver bug. I have tried reinstalling Windows already, same result: With the Hybrid mode I can change the screen brightness, with the discrete mode I canīt.

My thinkpad's screen wasn't properly (dark) I purchased another screen and installed it and there was still nothing. If I shined a light on the screen I could see a very very VERY faint image of the startup screen/login screen and it appeared the screen was cut into four quadrants each showing the same image (4 illustrations of the same image in each of the screens quadrants). When I hook up the screen via HDMI to my TV the computer works just fine, I just can't use the laptop screen. Any ideas? I received a PCI/PCI e test failure when using the solutions center. The OS is Windows 8.1, the processor is an intel i5.

Answer:Thinkpad Edge E420 extremely dark screen, no brightness

The problem with your screen is the backlight. But because you have changed the screen the cause is either the wiring or the backlight power supply. The power supply appears to be part of the motherboard, so that leaves you the video harness or the motherboard. If it is the video harness, it is repairable, but it is much much easier to just replace it. As for the motherboard, you need to look at the video connector, both on the harness and on the motherboard, and make sure none of the contacts are bent over or burnt.

I just changed my ThinkPad T450 laptop screen to a full-HD IPS display. The new panel (display) shows up in the Device Manager with Hardware ID MONITOR\LGD03FF. While the screen works, I can no longer adjust the brightness in Windows 10 - it's always on full brightness and the brightness key combinations no longer work (nor do any of the Windows 10 software brightness controls). The brightness adjustment keys work perfectly in Linux (Ubuntu 16.04), and they work if I go in to the BIOS. The monitor is showing up in the Device Manager as "Generic PnP Monitor". Any idea how to get brightness working in Windows 10 with the LGD03FF panel?

Answer:Brightness not adjustable on ThinkPad T450 after changing screen (to LGD03FF)

unless you have a panel with an fru number corresponding to t450, the eeid (configuration chip on the panel) won't have the correct info to allow brightness control.

Hi, I have the following issue since a couple of days (not sure it came with a recent windows/drivers upgrade): When I set the screen brightness to low, or the screen dims itself in a dark environment, it starts to flicker - there are flashes of white/blue as long as the brightness is low. Increasing the brightness gets rid of the problem. I tried disabling the panel self reflesh (PSR) which seemed to help others, but no success there. Anybody got the same issue and a possible solution? My specs: Windows 10 1709, Intel Graphics Drivers Version 21.20.16.4727 Video of the flickering:

Hey, I never really noticed it before, but today when I was trying to save some battery on my laptop, I was trying to change the brightness down and it wouldn't work. I even tried using the hotkeys, which were also unresponsive to my commands. If anyone knows a fix to this, please tell me. Thanks!

Do your other hotkeys function? Have you clean installed Windows 8? If yes, you may have to download the driver pack from HP to get them working.

Just did a recent update on Windows 10. I can't change my screen brightness by pressing the increase/ decrease brightness button on my keyboard. If I do press the brightness button, I am still able to click and drag to change the brightness. When my laptop is plugged in I do not have this issue.

Can someone help me here? I am really frustrated.

Answer:Why can I only change my screen brightness when my laptop is charging?

This is one of the power options. Go to Start/Search and type power options. You should have two settings, one for battery only and one for being plugged in. Running at full brightness will drain the battery faster.

So I'm not sure how long this has been happening but for some reason, I can't change the brightness on my laptop screen. I have linked a picture and as you can see, my brightness says 0% and that I can't change it, however my actual brightness is at 100%. I have looked around everywhere and the only responses I have found don't work for me. Here's a list of everything I have tried:
- Reinstalling Display Drivers
- Rolling Back Display Drivers
- Reset Settings on UWT4
- Power and Battery Settings
(UWT4 or Ultimate Windows Tweaker 4 is a customizer for Windows 10 and I thought that might be the problem but it wasn't)

If anyone has any suggestions on how to fix this, it's greatly appreciated! Thanks! -FrostyTigerXP

I have a Toshiba Satellite P750-137 with all the latest drivers and Windows Updates.
It's running Windows 7 but ever since I installed the new BIOS update, I've lost the ability to change my screen brightness.

The options from the Toshiba VAP come up when I press FN + F6/F7 but there's no bar underneath and brightness doesn't change.
options from within the Windows Power Management have all disappeared as well. I'm not sure if it's a driver or the BIOS update that's caused it.

When I go on the BIOS setting though, under the Power Management tab, whenever I go on an option, whatever I choose it always comes up with an error message saying something along the lines of Invalid Value Entered.

I think there is definitely something wrong with the BIOS update either way and is there a way to downgrade the upgrade or have information about a fix?

Answer:Satellite P750-137 Can't change screen brightness

Hi

Did you try to set the BIOS to default settings after the update?

Try that. Access the BIOS and press F9 (this sets to default) then save the changes and exit the BIOS.
I would also recommend restarting the Flash Cards. The tool controls the FN buttons and can be found in
All Programs -> Toshiba -> Flash Cards

If this would not help, reinstall and update the VAP (value added package).
Additionally it would be worth to reinstall/update the display driver.

Good luck

Answer:Cannot change brightness of the screen - HP ENVY 17 Notebook...

I posted the step by step guide here: http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/id-2748304/amd-intel-enduro-laptop-brightness-fix-win.html  but if you are familiar with Registry just look for FeatureTestControl and see if the value is using f840 or f940 and replace it with ffff then reboot. should work now. But if you still experience same issue try to follow the steps on that post. Cheers!

I know there are a lot of similar case with me but trust me, i have went through all the possible solutions that I have came across but none of them solve my eye discomfort situation.
So let me share again my problem here and what I have done in order to outcome the problem.
After upgrade to windows 10, my screen brightness can't be changed either using fn+fx or at power option or any other possible places.
Other fn button working fine. Troubleshooting:
1. Refer to ASUS driver and support website - useless due to obsolete driver.
2. Use intel driver update utility to scan and search for latest driver - installed but still useless - version 15.36.24.64.4264 a.k.a 10.18.14.4264
3. Device manager --> update intel display adapter--> let me pick a list from my computer --> 10.18.15.4279 available and picked - useless
4. No brightness slider at power option
5. Adaptive brightness turned off
6. Device manager --> update intel display adapter --> Microsoft basic display adapter <<--- Seriously not practical but i tried anyhow but still useless.
The brightness is killing my eye. Anybody can share their solution especially from G551 or any user with 2 graphic cards.
Thank you.

For some reason I can't change my screen brightness anymore. I've already tried a HD 4000 driver rollback to version 9.17.10.3223 and I also disabled "adaptive screen brightness" at the power management. For some reason I can change the brightness by using the "microsoft basic display adapter" driver instead of the HD 4000 but that isn't a real solution.

Hi, I just got an acer aspire 5517 15.6" screen 3gb ram, 250gb HDD, AMD athlon 64 X2, running windows 7 and today I have been having a problem.. all I wanted to do was adjust the brightness of the screen which is something i've done many times with it since I got it for Christmas and 3 or 4 times in a row when I tried to lower the brightness (it is set to maximum right now) the screen immediately goes blank soon followed by the booting screen... then it asks me if I want to start it in safe mode because it didn't shut down properly... I've been afraid to try and adjust the brightness again. Is there anything that anyone knows of to fix this or is there a problem with my laptop?

Answer:Why Does my Laptop reboot when I try to change the brightness on the Screen?

OK first welcome to computer hope. Is it running on battery or power cable when it does this? What exactly happens are there any messages? When you reboot does it just say windows did not shut down properly? What are you using to change these settings, please provide a list of the steps you took.

Hi! I pu WinXP into my notebook(A200-1M8). But now hotkeys do not work? What I must to do? Thank you!

Answer:Satellite A200-1M8 How I can change brightness of screen?

The Satellite A200-1M8 belongs to the PSAE6E series.
You have to choose always this number if you want to download any drivers or tools.

So the FN keys do not work because either the drivers and utility was not installed or the BIOS was not updated to the XP version.

Please check this!

PS; The BIOS update is always risky. The wrong version or wrong BIOS update procedure can damage the ROM module on the board.

I just upgraded my T510 with Windows 7 Ultimate x64. While downloading all the drivers and stuff for installation I thought I might as well update the BIOS as well. Everything worked just fine and the new configuration works well but I have lost the on-screen display that pops up when adjusting sound or brightness. Can someone tell me how to turn that back on? I like that feature.  I read a post where the user can't make that black bar go away, so I suppose my problem isn't as bad. Thanks in advance.

Hello, I bought P50 last July with: Intel Xeon CPU E3-1505M v5 @ 2.80GHzNVIDIA Quadro M2000M3840x2160 non-touch Display When I was buying this laptop, I saw that a few people complaining the color of 1080P display was bad, therefore I chose the 4K display. But during this half year I found 4K hasn?t really had a compatible solution with all software, specially I have to use various types of apps. Then the 4K really becomes a burden to me since some apps looks very bad and I often have to switch resolutions for different apps. I just want to know if it?s possible to change my display to 1080P. I don?t care about the color that much, but more the compatibility. I?m still in warranty and want to change display by Lenovo?s after-sales service. Has anyone had similar experience changing it? Or any other suggestions? Thanks in advance.Best,Chen

Tried the hard reset, tried hdmi to a different monitor, tried external monitor cable... nothing is working. Teenage son said he thought he saw something about a Trojan virus and an auto fix going on before he shut it down... Could it be a virus? Could it be video card burnt up? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
