I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello,So, first of all, I'm not english, so I'm sorry for the following mistakes.Let's start.1 year ago I've bought a lenovo x230 netbook with Windows 8, intel core i7 + 8 gb ram + SSD. [still using these specs]Okay. After 1 month of usage, the display started to have some problems. From the left to right, the 3/7 part of the display is changing in all the colors while using. It depends on what color is the page opened. If it's white, this part of the display is black with some "running" white lines, if it's blue - red and so on.No problem ; acording to the warranty, the display has been changed. It was ok.Since august 2014 I didn't use the laptop again. I started using it in April 2015. In may, the display started to have that problem again, but I've read on your forum that I need to put the display on 60Hz and on High performance mode to fix it, and that's what I did. At the beggining of June, the problem was back, and it is still on 60Hz and high performance mode.3 days ago, my laptop started to make another problem ; CHARGING.It doesn't want to charge.  If I just plug in, it stays with the battery on 0%, and it doesn't open because of the missing electricity, but I've realised something. If I move the end of the charger [near the part which get into that yellow circle where the end of the charger must be, hope you understand] higher than 10-15 CMs it DOES charge. But now it doesn't charge even if I put it in the position I've said before. Dear lenovo, My lenovo x230 has just started to give wierd 'band' on the display I have a 12.5" Premium HD (1366x768) LED Backlit Display. The lenovo was bought in June 2013. I have attached the relevant pictures. I can tilt the screen to a few positions where the band does not appear, it begins to appear when I move the screen. Is it only a wire/connection issue or will I have to replace the entire LED panel ? http://s18.postimg.org/op9qexa09/IMG_20140720_190452.jpg Thank you ;-) DVartak

Hi everyone, hope you can help me out with this issue I am having.  I bought a new X230 a couple weeks ago along with the additional 6 cell slice battery. However, I have been having a problem.  When the slice battery runs out the system won't go into sleep; instead when I close the lid on the laptop it turns off completely and when I reboot it all of the programs / app have closed.  It's like the system has a hard power off when that happens. When I reboot, I get this message that says: "Battery 2: There is an error."  Clicking on the replacement options links goes to a 404 page.  (Thanks Lenovo!)  http://screencast.com/t/LLlmqaQ1NJ5k Looking in the Lenovo Solution Center in these cases the secondary battery is listed as "not available".  http://screencast.com/t/PlYdomKZU Anything I should try or should I be getting a new battery from Lenovo?  Is this a common problem?

Answer:Lenovo X230 Slice battery error and problems

Hey there!

Can you tell us what model (machine type) of X230 do you have and what operating system it is running? The machine type can be found on a sticker on the bottom of the unit. This will help me assit you with the errors you are recieving.

Also, have you checked your power manager settings? It is possible to have a PM setting to turn the laptop off when the lid is closed and/or when the slice battery dies.

This is.... odd. I THINK that some (not all) of my programs that are supposed to start at startup ...don't. At least not the first time I log in. If I log out, then log back in, they (almost) always all load. (I'm on a mult-user machine at home) It doesn't happen all the time, and it isn't the same programs every time. In fact, I haven't been able to determine any pattern at all. I'm not even entirely certain that they indeed HAVEN'T loaded; I just know that they aren't showing up in my system tray.

Oh, I forgot. Stats.
XP Home edition, SP2
The progs that are supposed to run at startup:
Zone Alarm (free), United Devices agent (a parallell processing program, like your protein folding program), APC Powerchute, BigFix, Spybot S-D resident, freeram xp pro, Avast on-access scanner/Virus Recovery DB.

Answer:startup programs don't load on the first login

uhh, any suggestions on how to fix this?

Hi,

I have several programs flagged for start on Windows login that don't start.
I can see them flagged in Startup via MSConfig, autoruns etc yet they do not begin when I log in.
If I initiate them when I have logged in, they run without issue.

I feel the problem may have to do with the heightened Win7 security (UAC?).
When I start one manually, it requests the usual, "Do you want this program to make changes to your computer?" (User Access Control) prompt and details shows "This certificate is OK."
My user account belongs to Administrators.
I've Googled this and found the same problem but no solution.
Any ideas?

Answer:Win7 64-bit startup programs not starting on Login

to me they ain't Win7 aware programs and as you've started this thread in the 64bit section I'd say they be 32bit progs ... what programs are they, and or, do they have updates?

Hi all,

Recently I have a very slow startup, after I enter my login ID and PW.
After login, I get the NOD32 screen for a minute or two and then takes about 4 minutes to get the icons on the desktop.

I have a Lenovo T60 laptop with XP/SP3 and a 2GB memory with T5600 CPU (1.83 Ghz).

Alraedy tried to defrag the disk, uninstall and install SP3, disable the NOD32 antivirus, tries to disable almost all Lenovo processes and almost all msconfig>startup services but still same very slow.

following is the hijackthis.log (with a full list of regular processes and services running on my laptop):

Hi all,

Found this site and was hoping for some help. A couple weeks ago, I turned on my ASUS G74SX-XR1 and the screen never came on. I took out the battery and discharged the static electricity and my computer started up fine. Well yesterday, after coming back from a vacation where I took my laptop with me and used it all weekend, my laptop screen wouldn't come on again. I tried the same method as before and it still didn't work. Troubleshooting it, I found that the backlight wasn't coming on. Graphics card OK. I saw with a flashlight that the computer was running, but it was running Startup Repair. This worried me. I let the computer set for a day and today it starts up fine, backlight and all. But, now my laptop connects to the router, but with no internet access both wireless and wired connections neither at home or at school. Also, some basic startup programs that I've never had a problem with, are now crashing on startup. Can these two problems be related? Or is it an inverter going out and corruption of files?

--Adrian

Answer:Computer startup problems, now won't connect to internet and programs crash on startup

it depends what programs are failing ... as for the backlight if you can see it with a flash light then it is the inverter board... hook the computer up to monitor start the computer in safe mode and check the windows logs and see what it is thats crashing ....

I have been having an intermittent problem with my Edge 15 ever since I got it on March 11, 2015. After logging on, the Start screen and or desktop comes up, but then the screen turns black with a white border where one usually sees the charms bar and then the login screen comes up and I am asked to log in again. It may then boot up fine or I may be asked to login several more times before it actually starts working. This does not happen every day but I don?t think I have ever gone more than six days without this happening.  I have called Lenovo support several times regarding this issue but no luck. They changed the power settings and also set it to not require a login password. Neither of these things solved the problem. When we had removed the login requirement, the screen would still turn black with the white right border and flash and do this several times, etc. I run my anti-virus (and I do weekly full scans) and it comes up clean. I am running McAfee Total Internet Security.I finally reset my computer to the initial factory install but the problem continues. I also ran a clean boot to try and isolate the problem but did not find anything. Since this is an intermittent problem, it is hard to troubleshoot. I have installed and run Lenovo Solution Center but it says my system is fine. There have been several BIOS updates for my system but Lenovo Support told me they only do this at a last resort, they don?t think it?s the problem, etc.&... Hi guys, a couple of weeks ago i did a fresh install on my second pc. i went to use it on the weekend, and all seemed well. Went past the welcome screen and the background came up. It played the login theme and just stayed there.

The mouse still works, screen saver comes on after 10 minutes, wiggle the mouse and it goes back to a blank desktop.

Task manager still works, but i cant do a system restore because i believe it doesnt load the necessary files, even in safe mode.

In safe mode it does the same thing. No desktop icons appear, and there is no start menu, plus right mouse click doesnt work.

If anyone knows what is happening, let me know as it is bugging me that this thing broke again.

Thanks,
Bandit

My first problem is mainly being able to start my computer at all. About 2/3 the time I turn on my computer, one of two things will happen: either the startup screen will freeze and the text and windows logo will become disfigured with red lines surrounding them (I will attempt to post pictures for clarity), or the screen will go black.

In each of these cases, the computer does not start up, and I have to reboot it. After a few times I am able to get the computer started. This event occurs regardless of how I'm booting windows (normal, safe mode, startup repair, ect.) This, I believe, has always been a problem of mine I have never really attempted to fix, other than trying a system restore, which did nothing. Just today, another problem occurred. After I went through the first problem and I was able to boot my computer, after I tried to log on, I received an error message reading: “User... Read more

Follow these same steps for a Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7
which include everything you need to get and keep a perfect install, the program to audit your installed Product Keys, latest Win7 installer for your licensed version if needed.

If you haven't done so yet you can also use the same disk or the System Repair Disk to run a few Startup Repairs.

If you want to post back a screenshot of Disk Management - Post a Screen Capture Image we may be able to spot the problem, or provide more ideas for resolving the problem.

Did you use the oldest System Restore point to get well before the problem started? The stall during Win7 boot animation is most often a driver failing to load.

Well I have Windows XP sp2 and i have been having these problems for quite some time now. I was just to lazy to find any solution but now i really need some. here they are:

1. When I startup my computer i sometimes get a program called wgatray.exe i know this is a windows authentic checking program but it doesnt go away and i cant end it. This makes it so i cannot open any programs on my computer. Like i click on internet explorer and in taskmanager it says it is running. I can click it some more and multiple iexplorer.exe programs will be running in my processes list but none are actually there. Even in the open applications there are none. It allows me to run 0 programs. Even system restore. What i have found that helps SOMETIMES is when i go to "msconfig" in run i have these startup programs that do not have a name they are just blanks but i can check them and uncheck like usual. Sometimes it is fixed if one of the programs is checked, sometimes when none are checked or sometimes when both are checked. I had 3 but i have no idea where the third one went.

2. Another problem i have is sometimes is that iexplore or mozilla firefox dont open. Taskmanger says they are running but they are not in fact. This leads me to restart my computer and voila i have wgatray problem. This just happend to me couple minutes ago.

3. Everytime i restart my computer it says there was a fan failure press f1 to continue. So i do it everytime and it starts like normal. But i know... Read more

Hi there, My new ThinkPad X230 arrived today. While exploring the system, I noticed that I don't know the password for the MEBx Login, which I am accessing by pressing CTRL-p at system startup. I don't recall setting this at all today. Hello, I have a problem with my computer that popped up out of nowhere a while ago. It started with a chkdsk that happened randomly, but I didn't think too much of it at the time because my computer seemed to work perfectly fine after the whole process was done. Then a few months after the chkdsk happened, I suddenly noticed my computer acting a little weird. Out of the blue, my computer started to hang while I was doing what I usually do on my PC such as surfing the web, etc. I restarted my computer to see if the problem would disappear and ran into a problem with the bootup. It was very slow because of this long annoying black screen that appeared for about a minute after the windows logo and before the login screen. I had then logged in and things were loading up very slowly, but after everything loaded my computer ran fine. I rebooted my computer once again and another chkdsk popped up; it did whatever it did and my PC seemed to had gone back to normal. Everything booted up at normal speed and all was fine until about 5 days later when the same problems came back to slap me in the face. This cycle would repeat itself for several weeks until it just suddenly decided to get worse. These problems started to happen daily instead of every 5 days or so. Not only were they happening every day, they were more severe. Opening up a program like Steam would take about 30 minutes and it would lag my whole computer (except my mouse) until it finally opens up the program's logi... Read more

This is a tough one to explain. This is a couple week old PC. When booting, sometimes it hangs on the black screen with the progress bar either in Starting Windows or Resuming Windows. Sometimes it hangs on the Windows desktop and the cursor is froze. I can power down and boot up again and it
usually boots normally then.

The other strange thing is that the programs that load at startup don't seem to be consistent. Sometimes the McAfee Security Center will be in the system tray, sometimes not. Sometimes other programs normally found in the system tray are not there.

I ran AdAware and Spybot and got rid of everything those 2 found. Virus Scan runs clean.

Another example is that I have my LAN connection set to show the icon in the system tray - it doesn't but I can still connect. The icons aren't hidden, checked that. I have also consistently lost my wireless connection. The Device Manager doesn't even show it. It's built into the motherboard I believe.

About 50% of the time I have to boot several times to finally get into Windows. Not good for a brand new PC.

Here is a Hijackthis log. If someone could take a look and see if anything looks suspicious I would appreciate it.

I want to delay Startup Programs & Control the order of Startup Programs in Windows. Are all those startup programs necessary? When I load Windows, I feel it takes the eternity before I can actually get to open any program. The reason is of course the n number of startup programs that Windows tries to load before presenting you with a usable desktop. You can check out startup programs by typing msconfig in the Run dialog box (WinKey + R). And often, you would notice programs that you don't really need: Google Updater, igfxtray, hotkeycmd and all those unwanted processes. Delay Startup Programs
In my case, I remove most of the unwanted programs. Just to make sure that removing a program will not affect your operating system, copy the process name and google it. If it says the program is essential for functioning of Windows, keep it else remove it using MSCONFIG.
Better still, use WinPatrol from winpatrol.com. It lets you check for a processes by right clicking on it. The free version is enough to maintain your startup programs. It also allows for delaying programs without having to edit the Windows registry. Right click on a process and select move to delayed programs. In the delayed programs tab, click on delay options and select the time by which you wish to delay the startup item. It is that simple.
Normally, all the updaters go to the delayed programs list in my case: Javaupdate, Java scheduler; dotnet update; google update (better remove this one completely). I a... Read more

Answer:Delay Startup Programs or Control order of Startup Programs in Windows

WinPatrol is great, but do remember that it has be set to start with Windows, for the startup delays to work. If you just move some startups to the Delayed List and exit WinPatrol and NOT set it to run at boot-time, it wont do.
You can delay Services starting up too via Services.msc. Use the Automatic (Delayed Start) option.
Having a batch file placed in the startup folders with the delay parameters is another option.
Apart from WinPatrol, there are 3 other freeware I know of, that can help delaying startups. Read Set Delay time for Startup programs in Windows 8 / 7. Startup Delayer Standard Edition : Startup Delayer gives you the power to optimize your Startup Process by delaying applications from starting up as soon as you log into your computer. By delaying the applications during start up, your computer becomes usable a lot faster. Startup Delayer will then start launching your delayed applications when your computer is more idle. LaunchLater: LaunchLater allows you to defer the launch of applications that run at Windows login. This lets Windows focus on booting itself first, then subsequently running a list of configured startup apps using a schedule that you control. Startup Helper lets you choose the order in which start up programs should load.

When i try to log on using the single swipe power on and login feature sometimes the screen will go to the login screen, the finger print scanner will flash, and then i get a black screen. I can see the mouse cursor, but nothing else. If I swipe my finger again, I will see the login screen again briefly, before it returns to a blank screen again. There is no way to get past this, aside from forcing the machine to power down (Hold down power key for 10 seconds). Does anyone have a solution for this. Powering on the device and logging in with a single swipe is a really great feature, but I need it to not brick logging in. Thanks for any help or advice.

Answer:X230 Win 8.1 Pro Fingerprint single swipe power on and login black screen

I've not seen or heard of this problem before, and I will double-check my X230 with Win8.1 tomorrow.

Questions:
1.  Does this happen 100% of the time, or is it intermittent?
2.  Does it happen starting from full shutdown (press and hold SHIFT key while you shutdown the computer normally, then swipe to power on and log in).
3.  Does it happen starting from sleep (swipe to resume the system from sleep and log in)
4.  Can you check "View all problem reports" screen in Action Center to see if any crash happens at the same time the problem occurs?
5.  Can you export registry at these locations:
    a.  [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Authentication\Credential Provider Filters]
    b.  [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Authentication\Credential Providers]

If you put these two .reg files into .zip you should be able to attach it here.

Hi guys, Some days ago my Lenovo G500 got some problems during startup process. Basically, that's all: 1 - Pressing Switch On button2 - Laptop starts loading with Lenovo splash screen3 - Laptop turns off instantly with no reason4 - Pressing Switch On button, again5 - Since it turned off instantly, it takes many minutes to load Windows 10. Then it works properly, since i turn my laptop off. When i have to turn it on again, same story.Removing battery (with no AC adapter) and pressing many times switch on button seems to be the only thing that works for some day, then this issue came out again. I don't think this is a software issue since i restored Windows many times. Lenovo G500 with Intel i3 3110m 2,4Ghz and 8GB of RAM.

Answer:Lenovo G500 - Startup Problems

If it turns off instantly without automatically restarting, then there may be a physical hardware problem (not software). Computers will force a shutdown (staying off) without restarting if it detects overheating, or if there is a malfunction related to bad hardware (like a motherboard). It could be the power supply... Does it happen on battery? If it does then its not the power supply, and more likely overheating or a bad component like mentioned.

Recently whenever i hibernated or shutdown my laptop and turned it back on it started to get a black screen, you cant even see the splash screen for lenovo. It is simply black as if was still shutdown. My only solution was to disconnect everything (USB's, Headphones ect.) and then turn it on, it worked for a while but whenever i do that now i still has a black screen. The graphics card has been messing around lately with many games leaving my background green for a split second but i dont really know if that is the cause, i have used CPU Unparking in the past and it has built up lots of heat inside my laptop so maybe some of the components may have been damaged but i dont know if the components are the problem. Also considering its just a black screen on startup i cant get startup repair running. Please post your solutions!Thank you!

Hello today my Lenovo Thinkpad T400 just stopped working.

I turn it on and it stops at the IBM logo and nothing happens.

I tried removing the battery, turning it on with and without the battery. I checked the HD connection and still nothing

Last night it was working fine, this morning it was in sleep mode, I used it, closed all the application and applied a normal shutdown.

Thank you

I own a Lenovo Ideapad u510. The laptop cannot startup normally because it gets interrupted immediately by the "your pc ran into some problems" error. I tried to use the NOVO button to recover my system. It can go easily into the menu with BIOS SETUP etc. but it cannot go into the System Recovery because it also gets interrupted by the error when it loads. I dont know what to do now. A little help would be much appreciated.

When the laptop experiences the error, it boots into automatic startup repair but it never finishes due to the error occuring once again before it finishes.

I have a lenovo 3000 n200 (i think 769) which has problems booting from cold. I live in the UK so normal temperatures are 10-20 C so shouldn't be a problem. About a month ago the system decided that at startup it would power off for the first 2/3 attempts for it to startup before it started up normally. So what happens: It gets past the bios stage with the ram etc and is fine until it reaches the operating boot stage, I have tried  both a repair and fresh install to no availI have tried also with ubuntu both as a partitioned install and as a standalone with the same result.I have noticed that the times where the power fails the fan is working hard while booting but when it succeeds you can hardly hear it, however the laptop is fine after it has fully started with no overheating issues so a true fan problem seems unlikely. The BIOS is the latest released by lenovo and there was no change between not having the problem and having it. Does anyone have any idea as to what may be causing the problem?  Or even have also experienced a similar/the same issue? Thanks Alec

Hello, I got a Lenovo 3000 n200 laptop, with windows vista basic installed, some weeks ago it crashed (most of you, and maybe all of you could have made acquaintance to the well popular blue screen), how did this happen? Even i am not sure, Vista worked pretty fine like flawless most of the times (except one time it took some updates and when it restarted it took me to the lenovo restore and recovery, but this got me out of the problem, so i was really happy), but some weeks ago i wanted to install visual studio 2005 (i know there already is the 2008, anyways) and in the service pack 1 there were updates for the visual c++, c#, java, web developer, and i installed every one of them, but when i installed the one for the web developer it asked for reboot, anyways i clicked yes then ... it said "step 2/3 ... " bla bla can't remember the entire line, then it rebooted, and it said "step 3/3 configuring the updates" to be honest i was kind of worried (you see there were lots of times when after that it wrote something like updates weren't configured corectly or something like this, and i was thinking "i hope i won't get that message again" ) anyways i didn't look at the screen the whole time, but suddenly i saw my computer restarted and then lenovo repair and recovery started i said "fine, looks like there was a problem, no worries this will get me off the hook like the first and last time" ... but then after choosing the language, it said to choose for a partition, but the li... So did you actually already do repair or you cancelled because didn't have backups? If didn't repair yet, boot with Ubuntu live CD and copy your important files to usb drive. If you did lenovo repair, then it's little more complicated, you need to burn Windows PE CD, boot with it, recover your previous partition, then boot with Ubuntu CD and copy files and then do lenovo recovery again.

My Lenovo 3000 N200 (which is now a year old) is having problems starting up. I would press the power up button and it would start up, hard drive activity and the fan activates, but then it all activities cease abruptly and it dies. After pressing the power up button again, a message comes up with two options:1. start up with repair2. start normally I've run the repair procedure but this has not solved the problem. It is now at a stage where it shuts down about 3 times before it finally starts up.I've run a Lenovo care diagnostic and the only failure message is for smbios, does this have anything to do with the start up problems?I would really appreciate anyone's help with this before I take it to a service centre. Thanks

You can do two things: 1. Go to Windows Anytime Upgrade and purchase the Pro feature. This is the easiest way to upgrade, but it costs a small amount to do this. 2. Try booting from the Windows 7 DVD and see if it will let you start it and install the upgrade. You will need the license key from the Windows 7 DVD to do this. ... JDH

I just received my PC from cyberpowerpc.com I created my user accounts and i had some problems, basically i have 2 of the same accounts on the vista login screen, initially it is one account icon, but when i hit switch users it shows 2 of the same accounts. When i go to manage user accounts it only shows one account along with the guest. Also first thing when i turn on the PC before the login screen, i get "error, invalid user name or password" even though i have not entered anything yet. it may be trying to automatically login, i'm not sure, if so how do i turn that off. Anyone know how to solve this problem? Thanks!

Answer:2 identical profiles at login, and login error on startup.

See the tutorials on managing user accounts in the Tutorials forum. It shows how to turn password on and off, set up Administrator account etc..

Did the machine come with OS preinstalled or are you installing from a Vista disc? If you don't need the stuff on the machine you can wipe clean(if you have the Vista install disc that is.) Otherwise you'll just have to mess around with account settings.

The quick fix might be if you have a restore point dated before all this crap started happening.

Hi everyone, first post here!
My laptop is currently causing me some aggravation regarding fast startup. It is a Lenovo Thinkpad X220 I have upgraded to Windows 8 and then 8.1 and an SSD and up to now has been performing flawlessly.
Recently, with the fast startup option enabled, the computer has been shutting itself off completely after the startup animation and requires the power button pressing again before it will boot up, in 'normal startup' speed.
I have tried disabling and re enabling fast startup, using the 'powercfg -h off' and 'powercfg -h on' commands to recreate the hiberfil.sys file and that's about all I can think of. It still behaves the same, turning itself off completely immediately after the startup animation.
Anyone got any ideas to resolve this?

Answer:Fast startup causing problems - Lenovo Thinkpad X220

Fast startup has worked a couple of times in the meantime - I swapped the wireless card yesterday and reinstalled some drivers to resolve some unrelated issues and it started working again. Yay! I thought - but after the first couple of goes it started doing the same thing again and shutting off after the animation!

I would wan to find out if I can install  mSATA SSD 128gb into the x230 and main harddrive as a storage?

Solved!

Answer:Lenovo Think Pad x230 and mSATA SSD

Hi, odessit

This should be possible. There is a slot for an mSATA drive in the X230, as shown here. Also shown in that link is that an mSATA is a user-replaceable part. After purchasing your SSD, then all you will need to do is install it per the instructions here (pp. 70) Also, you will likely need to download this firmware update after installing the drive. This will allow the BIOS to recognize the SSD if you plan to use it as the C: drive of the system. The update can be found here.

Hope it helps,
Adam

Question: Lenovo X230 setup

Hi, everyone,A quick question. I have an x230 on the way and am looking to set up my workspace in a specific way. Here is what I want: an external monitor that will allow me to move the cursor from the laptop screen to the other monitor. So, in essence, a dual monitor set-up but with the laptop screen as one of the monitors. I would also like to be able to use a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse while in this set-up. Do I need the UltraSeries 3 dock, or something else? Thanks!Parker

Answer:Lenovo X230 setup

Hi, Parker

You should be able to accomplish this without a docking station. The X230 supports a dual independent display and has a VGA port and a Mini DisplayPort. So if you have a monitor with one of these connections and hook it up to your laptop, then it should work. You will need to make sure that you Extend the display and not Duplicate it. Duplicate will give you the same image on both screens. You can just use Win + P to set it appropriately.

As for the Bluetooth keyboard and mouse, you should have no issues here either. Provided Bluetooth is turned on in the system and you have compatible Bluetooth peripherals, it should work like a charm once they've been paired.

Hope it helps,
Adam

Hi All! I'm sorry to sound like a bit of a newb here, but i'm looking for a little bit of assistance with my x230 laptop.  I bought the laptop back in september with windows 7 professional.  A couple months later, I upgraded to windows 8 only to not really like it too much and decide for now I want to revert back to Windows 7.  Not knowing what my options were, I installed Windows 7 Ultimate back on the machine through an external cd drive, but now I'm missing about 100gb from my main drive, I ordered a 500gb 7200 rpm drive but now I only have about 350 GB available after the clean install.  I wasn't too sure how the recovery options on the x230 worked.  I see that next to my main C drive, there is another drive there located "Recovery" It has about 75% of the disk space being taken up but there is absolutely nothing within the actual drive when I actually click it.  It's probably too late, but is there any way to actually take my laptop back to the way it was when I first bought it? I only ask because it seems there's something on that recovery drive but I just can't figure out what it is.  I would appreciate any help at all, I'm sorry for sounding like such a newb with this stuff!

Answer:Lenovo x230 Recovery

Hi, Flyerfan16

If you are viewing your drives in Disk Management, how big is the Recovery partition? The partitions from Lenovo are normally between 7 GB and 10 GB when the machine ships. If the original partition is still on the drive, then you should be able to recover to the settings when the machine was first purchased.

You can attempt recovery by starting the machine as normal and then pressing Enter repeatedly to interrupt startup. A menu should then appear, with an option available to recover your system. Press the associated key for this action and then follow the prompts. If all works well, you should be able to go back to the way it was. If you choose this option, make sure to back up all files that you wish to keep that are currently on the system.

Hope it helps,
Adam

OR if you are familiar with disassembling of keyboard and palmrest do it, then unplug connector of small yellow battery under palmrest (near FPR) during several minuts. Assemble the laptop and try to boot. If laptop will boot go to BIOS setup, press F9 and save default settings, set and save your settings. If that actions will not resolve the issue I'm afraid you have to contact with Lenovo support.

Hi, I recently installed a Crucial M4 256gb mSATA SSD onto my X230. I already have the 128gb SSD that originally came with the laptop and it would startup really quickly at first. I installed it by slotting it into the mSATA slot, the computer recognized it right away, I formatted it and was able to use it right away. But now when I startup from a power off, it takes a lot longer booting up windows. It used to be that the four coloured globes wouldn't even make the windows flag before it started, now it makes the windows flag and sits there for a bit. Then when I log in the first time, it takes about a minute to get to the desktop. Everything else works fine, including starting from sleep mode. It's just the startup that is really slow. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks

Problem:After updating to the latest BIOS firmware (1.26), I found that my T460s would hang at the red Lenovo splash screen when starting up whilst placed in my ThinkPad Pro 90W Dock (the dock was on the latest firmware (2.33)).  The spinning circle of dots would never appear. If I took the laptop off the dock and started it, there was no problem. If I removed the single USB cable from the back of the dock (which fed the USB ports on my Dell monitor), there was no problem. If the laptop was just asleep (rather than completely off), and I woke it up on the dock, there was no problem. The problem only arose when the laptop was on the dock, with the USB cable plugged in, being started from a complete shutdown. Notes:I have had this laptop going on a year now using the exact setup with no issueI also have a T440 work laptop that I use on the exact same setup and it has no issues (BIOS version 2.41)Just in case, I completely wiped my hard drive and installed a fresh version of Windows 10 (on the T460s).  The problem persisted.Steps taken to dianose the issue:I rolled back the BIOS, first to v1.22 (which I believe is the earliest version I could role back to). This was challenging.  For those interested, I had to extract the BIOS image from the Lenovo ISO using ISOBuster, then create a bootable USB to flash the image using Rufus USB tool.  Lenovo didn't make it easy! All the above problems disappeared.I then tried both v1.24 and 1.25 - both of these had the same ... I had to update the drivers to have it stabilized without issues: Are you confortable installing and uninstalling drivers on Windows? If you want to to do this I can recommend you:1) Check the Windows update (Settings - Update and Security) for any driver or Windows update it may have.2)  Run Lenovo System update and update any drivers / BIOS that is may have.3) Instal "Lenovo Settings" is may be a long install for the depencies that it has to download, after that it also has some updates. Check specially for any of the "power related driver" updates, but it is good that you also update all the drivers from time to time. I know it is a nag to go updating Windows and rebooting, but I found it usefull to stabilize my Windows 10 installation on this machine. Regards

I know i can purchase a dongle for a few dollars but i rather keep my USB ports free.Anyone know where I can purchase a bluetooth card so i can install it myself? - Or is it advised not to do that. What do you think I should do?

Answer:Lenovo x230 missing bluetooth!

2 options come to my mind1) you can look for bluetooth expresscard (x220 has a slot, so I'm guessing x230 has it as well)2) you can put it in mini-PCIe slot (for the WWAN card or mSATA SSD), assuming it's empty now, ie. you purchased without WWAN

Hi Sirs/Madams, Good Day. I would like to seek for your humble assistance if ever you have any idea on how to fix the whole plate of the x230 keyboard. What happend was accidentally I spilt a huge amount of coffer in my unit. i immediately placed my laptop upside down to run any liquid in the keyboard, how ever after a couple of hours, i cannot use it any more. when I tried to swithed it off, and try to switch-on; no avail. Will there be any chance that i can still recover the whole keyboard? since i tried to use other keyboard (same model) and it worked. also the power button does not function anymore.  Thanks thanks

I've bought the Lenovo X230 with the broken battery (the PM showes 68% charging and no more, asks for the battery replacement). I've tried 3 different good-working batteries from X220 which were supposed to work on X230, but they don't. When starting the laptop with that battery, it stops with the information:" The battery installesd is not supported by this system and will not charge. Please replace the battery with the correct Lenovo battery for this system. Press the ESC to continue".  And after pressing the ESC key, it starts to work, but the PM still writes that the battery is not correct and it doesn't charge. What could it be?

Answer:Lenovo x230 battery problem

Hi,x230 doesn't support the batteries of old 29 series (x220 did). Only hw protected batteries 44 series are being supported by x230 (and 19+ series, external).Batteries of 29 series can only be discharged in x230.Try to perform the original (x230's) battery reset using Lenovo power manager feature.

Realized I posted this in the wrong place and it really belongs here I decided to look around to make sure my computer was even able to run an external GPU and found I have hit a wall. I flashed my BIOS to the newest version (like 2.67 or something?) but my TOLUD is 3.5 GB (dfa00000). I thought the BIOS update was supposed to fix this? I only have 8GB of RAM so the 16GB problem shouldn't affect me either? Anyone know what might be wrong? When reading some forums I saw that people who updated their BIOS were able to fix their problem as long as they only had 8 gigs of ram, which is why im confused I still have DFA00000. Will it still work regaurdless of this? I thought the update was supposed to fix this.

i have upgraded  X230 harddrive and installed OS from Backup, my fingerprint did work fine after upgrade for 3 month after that fingerprint just started giving error  E7210005 (cannot enrolluser, cannot update passport, cannot find finger print sensor), but in the device mananger panel it show that it is workng properly, when i open biometrics in control panel it shows that my device is not availabe.(i have also allowed fingerprint port in the bios). i reinstalled windows, update finger print drivers and software (from lenovo and also tried the ones from original manufacture-Authen tech). i tried to change the group policy setting, and also created new user wit admin privillages and also enabled all the sevice settings. but the problem error remains the same, it has been a moth now trying to search for solution but still nothing has come up. wat worries me is that the device manger shows that the FP device is working properly

Answer:Lenovo X230 FingerPrint Error

If you re-installed Windows and this problem still happens, I'd say there's a strong possibility that your fingerprint sensor has failed and needs to be replaced.  Even if the device looks OK in Device Manager, this really doesn't mean much.  All it means is that Windows can talk to the USB device that hosts the fingerprint sensor, but the fingerprint sensor itself could still be malfunctioning.

Some things that can help confirm hardware problem:
1.  Shut the system off, does fingerprint green LED flash slowly?  If so it means that the sensor contains some fingerprint templates so lets try to clear them.
2.  Turn the system on and press F1 to enter BIOS setup
3.  Go to the Security menu and choose Fingerprint, then clear the fingerprint sensor.  You should see a message about success or failure.  Failure definitely means HW problem.
4.  If you see a message about success clearing the fingerprint sensor from BIOS, then shut the system off again.  The green LED should not be flashing anymore because you cleared the sensor in BIOS.  If the green LED still flashes, then it means HW problem because the fingerprint templates were not really cleared.

So try the above steps to try to confirm the HW problem, or just call service in your country and request help.

I have a Lenovo x230 laptop with an i7 processor that starts the second time. This means that when you first turn on, there is a black screen. The restart must be forced and then normally turns on. I tried to use an external screen, tricks with disconnecting the battery and pressing the switch, CMOS battery, RAM memory replacement - nothing did not succeed. On this motherboard, the service replaced the BIOS chips due to failure in the upgrade. They said that the computer would not work anyway. The computer, however, works, but after the second launch - which is annoying. I have updated the BIOS on my own, which did not solve the problem. Once the computer starts, it works very steadily and without problems. I have not found a similar case anywhere on the internet.

I have a Lenovo ThinkPad X230 (which I love dearly) and have a few question about ports and booting.  I would first like to verify that the port on the left side of the laptop directly above one of the USB ports is indeed an ExpressCard 54.  I have searched the web, but have yet to find a definite answer, and my user manual simply stated "ExpressCard."  Furthermore, I would like to know if it is possible to boot an operating system from said port using an ExpressCard 34 SSD (64GB).  I have the intention of installing openSUSE 12.3 to the potential SSD and be able to boot from it.  I greatly appreciate any help.  I  would post an image of said port, but I am being told the image file is much too large.

Dear support, My Thinkpad X230 (NZD78MH 12.5", 3520M, 180GB, W7) recently started to frequently overheat. It happens during rather normal operation, such as browsing the internet or playing video on youtube. This causes the fan to run on maximum capacity and computer processes to slow down significantly.  As the image shows below, taken after playing a random youtube video, temperatures of ~103C are typical.  Should I have it serviced? Please help. Best regards, Matthias

After upgrading my X230 from Win7 to Win10, keyboard inputs crash some programs. For example, with any browser (MS Edge, Chrome and Firefox), type anything in the URL field would crash the browser. The browser would become non-responding. Need to kill it with Task Manager. Similar with MS Office. Keyboard only works with selected program. So far, works with Notepad and Windows Explorer (can change file name). Tried using an external USB keyboard, still have the problem. I have installed the latest drivers, still no luck.

Hello and welcome,

I'm on DSL today (1.5mbps) and that's way too slow to view those pictures.  Can you resize them or maybe just post in text what they say.

Even on my cable connection it would take a very long time to see those things. I can't tell if it's just gigantic images or a slow server on your end since I can't download them to check the sizes.

Hello all, I have serious network configuration issue (including both, WiFi and Ethernet). When I enter IPv4 configuration, next time I open again the configuration page, the settings are put into automatic mode (so no pre-entered IPs there). But ipconfig shows the entered IPs. Some times ipconfig also show 3 or 4 different gateways, but opening the Network adapters configuration page, all is set to automatic, so I put it into manual mode, then again to automatic mode and disable + enable adapter, then it'll go to dhcp. This issue is really annoying, I had it before the clean install, it worked some time after reinstall, but now the issue came back again. Using Windows 8.1 ProAll drivers are up-to-date. Any help is really, really appriciated,Thanks in advance,Kunnar

I want to be able to boot my X230 in UEFI only (CSM off). Lenovo media for X230 does not seem to be UEFI bootable, so I boot it with CSM on. The Recovery program asks about the GPT or MBR partitioning with the explanation that with GPT it will be bootable in UEFI only. But when I reboot after recovery and turn CSM off, the "Starting Windows" screen freezes endlessly. There is some hdd activity, but no Windows are loaded.Any clue what went wrong and how to fix it? Thanks.

Answer:X230: win 7 x64 in uefi using lenovo recovery media

You need to enable CSM when ever booting to external devices, so that is normal.     The difference between GPT and MBR is that the newer GPT is more robust, secure and allows more partitions and better error recovery, but both should work.   If you press and hold down the [F8] key, and then turn on the comptuter, do you get the option to boot in to Safe Mode, and if so can you boot in to Safe Mode, or Safe Mode with Networking? I presume that you are recoverying due to a prior problem, so more informaiton on why you were recovering may be helpful. Best of luck

I just received a new compay issues computer: x230 running Windows Pro 64 bit, Office 2010 and an SSD.  Unfortunately, out of the box the pointing devices, either the ultranav or an external mouse and keyboard (MSFT Sculpt), suffer from auto clicking and inability to input text...the text writes over itself...cursor moves forward and then backspaces on itself. The external keyboard worked fine when tested on other notebooks at home.  I did unistall the MSFt keyboard SW on the x230 to see if that made a difference.  Nope.  My IT team remotely updated all drivers, etc. So, everthing system-wise is up to date.  They seemed to have fixed it for about an hour, then it went back to this behavior, including opening multiple instances of applications on its own. The PC is unusable. Thoughts? Halfcalf18

I have a Lenovo X230, running Kubuntu 14.04. When I disconnect the slice battery at the bottom the system resets, it's very annoying. What's worse is that it seems like jostling the system, also can cause it to power cycle. I don't really have a need to remove the slice battery very often, but essentially if I put the laptop into standby, and put it in by laptop knapsack, the system is off after I get where I'm going. Thoughts? I saw somewhere that allegedly, when you unlock the battery, some thinkpad utility gets notified to switch the power, I wonder if the hotplug is a software only solution, and not doable in standby. Steve Ramage

I have a 4 year old Lenovo Thinkpad X230 computer.  Since I upgraded to Windows 10 (two years ago?) my computer has randomly shut off with no warning.  There doesn't seem to be a pattern with regard to when or how this happens.  The computer starts normally every time.  This can happen upwards of 5 or 6 times in an hour (although sometimes it can go several days without shutting off). In the last year (since June 2016), the computer has been evaluated by three different technicians on three different occasions (June, October, January).  Each found no hardware issues, no issues with fuzz/dust, no obvious software issues, no malware or other viruses.  Personally, I have explored the answer on the internet and fiddled with the settings relating to sleep mode (among other suggestions) and nothing seems to have worked.  I recently was advised to revert to the original windows 10, undoing all the updates and additional installations that I've put on the computer.  I did this, and miraculously it helped (although it still shut off twice since then.  This was in February).  In the last two weeks, I was forced to upgrade back to normal and the problem has returned.  Additionally, the first person who looked at my computer (back in June 2016), told me that this was aparently a common problem with Windows 10 and that the only way to fix it was to revert to Windows 8.   I would like to not have to do this, if poss... Hi all,Apologies if I've missed this elsewhere - new to the forums so still learning to navigate. As background, machine type listed below:X230 Laptop (ThinkPad) - Machine Type 2325, Model BA6As I see it I'm having two separate issues here but they may well be linked: Recent Windows 10 updates are making the taskbar fully ineffective - I note this is fairly common and have tried the powershell route to check updates to no avail; curious to know what the advice here generally is, if X230 is no good with Windows 10 or is there something specific I should be doing to rectify this. This weekend, my laptop has developed a habit whereby the sound and video playback stops working suddenly. On boot-up it's fine but after a while, I can't listen to music or watch videos at all. Bit alarmed about this but suspect it may be linked to the thunderstorm on Thursday (based in London...), given I woke up to realise the powerboard on my TV had also gone. My laptop is within warranty so hopefully if it's hardware related, I would hope this is covered - in truth, I was reassured about the Lenovo warranty but have never had cause to use it at home or work over the last 6 years of using Lenovos.Any help or guidance would be massively appreciated!Kind regards,Bal

Description of problem: at some point when playing audio, sound will cut out. The levels will still be moving on the mixer, but no sound will come through the speakers or sound jack. It seems that soon after I've closed all sound-producing applications, sound returns. I am 50-75% sure that this is strictly a sound jack issue, as I don't remember being able to reproduce the issue without the sound jack being active when the audio drops out. Frequently, bumping my headphones' cord seems to cause the problem, but other times, the problem seems to happen on a click, a loud sound, or seemingly nothing at all.

I am unsure of how to reliably reproduce the problem, so it is difficult to diagnose whether or not the problem can be reproduced when the sound jack is not active. This isn't common use for me...

Origin: Appeared mid-October, around the same time I had upgraded to the newest drivers (where the old ones were from earlier than May 2013). All were downloaded through the Lenovo website and/or Lenovo's System Update utility, with the exception of the Intel graphics drivers, which were downloaded through the Intel website. At this point, I was running Windows 8, not Windows 8.1. I installed Windows 8.1 recently, and the problem remains.

What I've tried: disabling drivers, reinstalling drivers, disabling sound effects, disabling audio application overrides...

What I haven't tried: rolling back drivers (being honest, I have a bit of trouble believing that this is strictly ... Read more

Hi, My Thinkpad X230 tablet screen is not truning on.  It just shows the dark blank screen. The power button is on, all other indicators are green.I have tried removing the battery, holding Fn button etc. Can someone help to resolve this issue please.. Thank You.

Answer:Lenovo Thinkpad X230 Tablet - Display Problem

If it is under warranty, call for service, rather than dealing with it. The first step is to unplug it and remove the battery. Press the power button 5 times, holding it for 10 seconds on the last push. Put it back together; plug it in, and try again.
