Lenovo X240 - 20 seconds to turn on to logo

Question: Lenovo X240 - 20 seconds to turn on to logo

Can someone tell me if there is something wrong with my X240. It has always done this so I am not sure if it is normal, but I never had this issue on older X series laptops. When I press the power button, if the machine was either shutdown, or hibernating, it takes 20 seconds before the Lenovo logo shows and it starts doing anything. Then it boots windows in seconds (I have an SSD) and I have no issues. Is this normal? It does not seem normal to me. I already upgraded the BIOS to latest. It doesn't matter which operating system I have installed. The BIOS is also set to quick boot. Enabling or disabling secure boot or UEFI mode does not do anything. Thanks

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello, so I have a Lenovo think pad x240 as issued by my high school and I was using it last night and tried to power down by pressing the power button as I was in a rush but that did not work so I shut it down normally and now I am trying to turn it on and pressing the power button is not working, it definately has battery because I plugged it in overnight so I think the power button may be faulty, I have only had the laptop for 2 years. And yes I have tried the "secret code" trick but that does not work - presumably because my laptop also has an internal battery.I need help asap!!!!! Thanks in advance

Answer:Lenovo X240 Won't turn on

Hi nstock98,

Welcome to Lenovo Forums!

Kindly request you to try with the below given troubleshooting steps.
Remove the battery and AC adapter
Remove the hard drive and wlan/wwcan cards
Remove both RAM modules
Re attach the AC adapter and boot
If you don't hear a series of loud beeps it probably means a hardware issue.

Please let me know whether the above steps helped you.

A week ago, my Nokia Lumia 925 completely stopped working, out of the blue. This was in no way due to low battery, as it was charged above 50%
When trying to reset or turn on, I get no response, and charging only results in the Windows logo lighting up for approximately 7 seconds.
What can I do to fix this?

Answer:My Nokia Lumia 925 won't turn on charge, when charging logo lights up for 10 seconds, nothing else.

did you get any solution? I'm in same situation and Microsoft it's ok :S

I have a Lenovo Thinkpad X240 that suddenly turned off whilst I was using it. It was charging at the time, and I'm fairly certain that the laptop itself didn't overheat. I've tried disconnecting the battery and ac adapter, holding the power button, connecting them back on and pressing the power button but nothing. It would be great if someone could give me some help, thanks.

So I had a problem with my T500's backlight initially and long story short, disassembling the computer has now caused the problem in the title. Whenever I plug in the battery/charger and push the power button, the fan will spin and the hdd will whirr a bit, but then after about 3 seconds, the fan will stop and the hdd will click off and cease whirring. The computer will no longer respond to the power button regardless of how many times nor how long the power button is held. I'm looking directly at the wires that carry power. Everything seems to be plugged in. I did the lenovo power trick (IE the 10 one second presses followed by the 30 second long press) and the computer does the 1-3-3-1 beep when I take out the RAM. The monitor is not plugged into it in any way, shape, or form. I do not know if this affects it. However, I have tried attaching the monitor and it still does this. Is there a piece that may have been knocked loose or something? I'm willing to try anything right now because at this point it's a literal brick now.

Answer:Lenovo Thinkpad T500 will turn on for roughly 3 seconds, then turn off and stay off.

Hi npesina, welcome to the forums,

there could be different reasons for the system behaving the way you describe, my suggestions;

remove all hard, SSD and optical drives to see if you experience the same,
remove all RAM, without replacing the drives, and test to see if you receive a system beep code,
remove all components which had previously been removed to test again.

The ultimate test would be to remove everything attached to the mainboard including the CMOS (BIOS) battery excluding the power socket, CPU and the fan. When you attach the power cable the system should come to life, the fan should run and beep codes sound.  After that its really just a case of putting the system back together one component at a time testing inbetween each component replacement, leave the main battery and CMOS battery until last to save having to always connect / disconnect the keyboard in order to turn the system on.

If at any point you experience the same issue as now it may well be that the component you replaced at that point or it's attachment socket on the mainboard  is the culprit.

My charger port broke and when i replaced it, it has broken my laptop, when I turn on my laptop, the lenovo logo screen appears, then it turns off and repeats the process, I have tried it with different RAM, booting from OS iso on a memory stick, disconnecting and reconnecting the CMOS. I was just wondering if there is anything else I can try to get it to work. Thanks.

Answer:Lenovo Z500 turns off few seconds after turn on. It starts for the second time.

Since the Z500 is not supported and by the fact that Win 10 might run at one time. The issue might be due to a recent update of Windows. Try restoring to a previous date where you think you do not have any issues at all.

Hi Dedelu,

Welcome to Lenovo Forums.

The best way is to run system update and let it find and install the missing driver.

Please connect the system to the Docking station and download ThinkVantage system update utility and install it. After installation restart the system and run the application so that it will check for the updated drivers and application for your system and will install it, after completion of all the update restart the system once again and check if the issue still persists.

Hope this helps. Please let me know your findings.

Shashi

I had it for nearly 2 years,Lenovo Y50-70 Touch -2 days ago while playing games on it, I smell a chemical smell coming from it so I immediately shut it down just in case. The next time I turn it on, it was fine the backlit keyboard glow red as usual but no display, and now it shut down after 4 seconds (with the fan running) whenever I turn it on except, sometimes It stay on (but still no display and no fan running).I got no experience into opening pc and such, I I tried opening it up and remove the dust that built us by quite a bit and tried to locate where the chemical smell was from, I though it was probably from the Fan or Coolers as it seems more strong there but not sure. After trying to turn the laptop on a few time the strong smell kind of dissipate a lot, and smell weaker.I been having a hard time trying to pinpoint just which part of the laptop is needed to replace. So if anyone could help me in the right direction it would be great. I just hope it wont have to buy a whole new motherboard x.xAlso idk if thats helpful information, but the first year playing games was fine, but the 2nd year and the laptop kind of overheated so I tried to cut down a bit and the fans were making more noises than ever. Especially when opening a new game or google chrome.

Answer: Laptop turn on for 4 seconds (No Display, Fan noise) and then turn off

A chemical smell to me tells me it's likely a failing/burnt out capacitor...It would be best to have it checked out at a shop...

Hi everybody, yesterday my X240 didn't wake up from sleep properly (LED backlight went on, nothing else happened), so I tried to restart it. When I hit the power button, the following happens:The power button LED and the Fn key LED light up and stay on.The red F1 and F4 LEDs briefly light up, as well as the keyboard backlight, but those go out after less than a second.I can hear some faint noise, the fan probably.Screen stays dark, no backlight. Connecting an external monitor does not help. I have tried to remove the power supply and external battery, pressed the Power button for 30 seconds, hit the emergency reset button, no results. Any ideas?

Hello, I have been asked to fix a PC by a friend but I am afraid it has gotten a little beyond my knowledge.

This is an emachines w5243 windows vista machine. Onboard gpu.

Upon powering on, the machine receives power and then will shut off a few seconds later. If I try this a few more times, the machine will stay powered on. I can access bios and some other settings.

If I then attempt to boot, as soon as the bar for windows starts loading, the machines either restarts or powers off. The same thing happens in safe mode.

I have swapped power supplies, no difference. There are 2 sticks of ram and I booted with one at a time, no difference. I have reset the CMOS battery, same.

In the hopes of a corrupted windows installation, I swapped around the hard drives.

Plugging the eMachines into my own PC, I was able to access the hard drive (and cleaned it up a bunch while I was there...apparently the pc belongs to the woman's kids for the most part. Infections from hell! Cureit got most everything I think. That is besides the point though.)

I plugged my windows 7 hard drive into her computer and the symptoms were repeated. I was able to tell it not to restart on errors and got some error codes from a BSOD.

Can you post your computer specs, along with your operating system, your external gpu name Is this an external gpu or an internal PCI-E video card?

Can you also post the wattage of your power supply.

At a guess I would say your power supply isn't powerful enough to run the card. "2 seconds off" Is this a new card and what was the reason for the change? On the black screen error this sounds like a basic driver error.

In either case remove 'external' video card from your computer, download the latest drivers for your os and internal video card from the manufacturers website go to; control panel, programs and delete ALL video card related drivers then run this program.

http://majorgeeks.com/Driver_Sweeper_d6171.html

Delete ALL drivers.

Turn on your onboard video card in bios

Now install the downloaded driver for your on board video card, does your onboard work now?
EDIT OOPS! Welcome to the forum!

I have my OS installed on my SSD. Sometimes when i power on my computer, after it shows the windows logo screen there will be a black screen with cursor for like 15-20 seconds before logon screen comes on. This doesnt always happen, i find it doing this most of the time if i had the pc off over night and power it on in the morning.

Answer:few seconds black screen with cursor after windows logo

It's not abnormal to have a black screen before the login screen. 15 to 20 seconds is a little long if you're using an SSD, but during that time Windows is loading drivers and all of the stuff in your system tray.

Have you got a lot of programs in your system tray? Or set to load at bootup? Try using msconfig and setting all of the startup programs to off, except your anti-virus and see if that speeds things up.

So last night my phone didn't turn on at all, even after one hour of charging no reaction. I tried doing a soft and hard reset, it vibrated both times but still... nothing. After letting it charge for one night I tried to turn it on. It vibrated and the windows logo blinked, but still nothing happens. Do I just have to charge it for longer or do I have to try the windows recovery method. I really don't want to reset the phone. Any other solutions?

I have a simular problem with a P200-140.

When it boots the Toshiba Logo appears for a few seconds and then disappears, if I tilt the screen I can see that the picture is there but the screen does not light up.

I used the SVGA output on my projector and that works fine. Sometimes after booting a few times the display returns and will then work fine but will disapear again without warning especially if yiou close the screen.

I dunno if this is possibly a switch problem?
Is there a microswitch that might be sticking when you close the lid?

I've tried deleting and reinstalling the display drivers and booting in safe mode, neither made a difference.

hi Mortiss,
maybe the backlight of the lcd is gone... (i dont think so)
or the wires broke... (!)

Hello.

Four days ago my computer switched off just seconds after the XP logo appeared during the bootup process. Since then it has switched off in the same manner and at exactly the same moment whenever I have switched the computer on.

At first I suspected a problem had developed on the motherboard or with my computer's power-switch but after four days of tests I have finally found a way to get XP to load and for my computer to then be ready for normal use. I have to ensure that the XP installation disc is in the CD-Rom drive before I switch the machine on, and that the BIOS has been set to boot the computer from the CD-Rom drive. If I boot by this method, everything is fine. But obviously this is a tedious way by which to boot every day.

One of the first remedies I tried was running sfc.exe /scannow to get the Windows Protection program to check the XP files on my hard disc and to replace any that may have become corrupted. However, after running sfc.exe TWICE, the computer shut-down again the next time I rebooted (always at the same point, several seconds after the XP logo appears).

Yesterday I used the Repair facility which is on the XP installation disc, and after the Repair process was completed I was left with XP loaded and the computer functioning normally. However, the next time I rebooted from the hard drive (and without the installation disc being in the CD-Rom drive) the power again shut-off seconds after the XP logo appeared on the screen. (Up until that ... Read more

Hi, I'm having problems with my X240. I'm running Windows 10. When I shut down the computer, it stays off for 2seconds and then boots back up. This only happens on battery power, when connected to AC the computer shuts down fine and stays off, BUT if I remove AC it boots up in 1 second.. I've got a Lenovo X240 that has an issue where the CPU fan kicks in when the CPU is hardly under any load at all. Idle CPU temps are around 50 degrees celcius. Are these the kind of temperatures I should expect from an i7 4600u in an X240 chasis? I have Lenovo Turbo Boost disabled but when I turn it on the fan instantly fires up to max and is extremely loud, even with absolutely no load. The laptop isn't very old so I can't imagine internal dust is an issue at this point. I've installed the latest BIOS which didn't correct the issue. Any suggestions? Thanks

Answer:Lenovo X240 Fan Noise

Unfortunately, Lenovo made some changes to the fan control with one of the last UEFI updates that included an update for the Embedded Controller that is in charge of the fan. After the update, I noticed that the fan almost never stops spinning (even at 40° C or below!). For that reason, I created a custom fan profile (using TPFanControl).

Hello all, Need some advise. I recently bought a Lenovo x240 1TB HDD + 16 GB mSATA. I did a couple of research and found that the 1TB is a 5400rpm one. I find the configuration a bit disappointing. When I lift my laptop when watching videos, even gently, I noticed that the video gets stuck, stops or gets interrupted so I am thinking of replacing the HDD with a SSD. A couple of questions, please. 1. Any suggestions for the SSD? which is compatible, which is not? I understand it should be SATA3?2. When I replace the HDD, will I be able to restore everything? how do I migrate my Windows 8.1 to the new SSD? Any suggestion is appreciated. I love the x240, if I could just improve the performance a bit, then it'll be perfect. Thanks in advance guys / Lenovo team.

Answer:Lenovo x240 HDD upgrade to SSD

You could reduce the sensitivity of Active Protection System to avoid false positives. Or increase the amount of the file buffered in your video player.1) Any standard SATA (I/II/III) SSD should work. It just needs to be 2.5", 7 or 9.5mm high.2) You can image your drive over to the SSD and everything should work fine. Make sure you use a tool that aligns to the 4K boundary for maximum performance. An alternative is to swap out the 16GB mSATA for a bigger mSATA. That way you keep the 1TB drive for backup or storage.

Hi, I would like to ask you when there is a must to use Lenovo Turbo Boost+ on Thinkpad x240? I'm asking because it is very loud so I would like to avoid turning it on. But I do not want to break my laptop. When and why do I need to use it? Why it is manually turned on on Windows 7 and not automatically run when it is needed?

Answer:Lenovo Thinkpad x240 cannot be shutdown

Hi Jarmonwhaim,

Welcome to Lenovo Community!

As per the query we understood that you are facing the issue with system not shutting down on your ThinkPad X240.

Press and hold the power button for 10 seconds to get it shutdown.
If you are facing this issue frequently then check with booting the system in safe mode option, perform HDD diagnose from Lenovo solution center to check if there is any error in the drive.

Hope this helps.

Best regards,
Hemanth Kumar

Hi All, Our company has recently purchased over 100 Lenovo x240 AM's and multiple users are reporting an issue with them randomly receiving a black screen with a white cursor on it. To resolve this they have to forcefully turn off their laptops and turn them back on again. I spoke to Lenovo Support and they gave me a BIOS Update, Power Management Driver and Wireless driver to try and resolve the issue. Has anyone else come across this and if so how did they resolve it? I've heard about some people uninstalling the fingerprint reader driver or updating it should resolve the issue. Also i'm awaiting feedback to see if the above fixes have resolved the problem but I havent tried anything with the fingerprint reader. Thanks!

Hi all I'm interested in buying a Thinkpad X240.I've found a good price for one which has Part Number 20AMS2QD0Q, but I can't find it on official Product Specification Reference (PSREF) (link here: http://www.lenovo.com/psref/pdf/tabook.pdf)This 20AMS2QD0Q is not on that list.So I was wondering if it has IPS screen, M.2 slot, smart card reader (or it is possible to put it on later) and WWAN for 3G websurfing (or it is possible to put it on later). I hope you'll reply and help me to figure out clearly its configuration as soon as possible. Answer:Lenovo x240 Hardware Upgrades

1. I don't have 3g modem installed, how could i order it? Is it possible? I do not think there is one available, but you can find USB moblile broadband modems for LTE/4g and 3g online for not much money. 2. Ir really doesn't matter for me but since i want to upgrade some stuff im asking is is possible for me to get Danish keyboard replaced with US? + I want the keyboard have backlight (currently there is no backlight). Is it possible? To replace the keyboad, you have to take your laptop almost completely apart, so you might consider either ordering a Keyboard cover for your X240 with US Layouts, or you can buy US Layout stickers to apply to cover each of the keys.     How to replace the keyboard on an x240https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HTN-CO_flVs The X240 did offer a backlit keyboard option,  but I am pretty sure that systems main system board/motherboard will NOT have the needed connections to power the backlight feature. 3. (currently there is 4GB installed) The x240 has only one slot, and supports a maximum of 8GB  of PC3-12800 DDR3L-1600MHz SODIMM Memory.   4. I recently purchased a used ThinkPad X240 and the original owner removed the HDD. I didn't believe it would be a problem since I have a 500GB SDD. He instructed me that he had installed 8GB of ram and had removed the original 4GB, again... didn't believe it would be a problem. Turned the system on with a Live USB of Linux and was not pleased to hear three beeps twice, followed by a single beep. I opened the unit and removed the 8GB stick. Received the same sounds... memory issue. I read the memory and it was 8GB DDR3 1600MHz 1.5V. I called the seller and said this is the wrong memory. These units require DDR3L (Low Voltage) 1.35V memory. He said he was unaware and it's all he has. I went and purchased Micron 8GB DDR3L 1.35V. Installed it and no more beeps. Great! Problem... no video either. Pressing power the keyboard lights up, fan spins and power button plus I on ThinkPad lights up... then keyboard lights go out, fan stops and that's all she wrote. About 1 minute and the green light on power and red light on I goes out. I tried completely discharing the unit, removed CMOS, Internal and External batteries and then held down power button for a minute or two. Same results. Tried an external Lenovo IPS monitor, and nothing... just black screen. Tried F1 repeatedly and nothing also... just black screen. Any ideas would be appreciated, thank you.

Hello, I have a Lenovo X240 that should have 2,29GHz cpu speed. If I look in Computer properties and System I can see this info: Intel Core i5-4200 CPU @ 1,60GHz 2.29GHz. CPU-Z only shows 1596MHz at Core speed. Any ideas?

Answer:Lenovo X240, only 1,6GHz CPU speed

Modern Intel CPUs use SpeedStep technology to vary CPU speed according to need, power (battery vs. mains) and other factors. This is intended to minimize power consumption, i.e. increase battery life, as well as reduce heat generation.

If you plug in the X240 into the AC mains and run some CPU-intensive apps like video playback, you should see the CPU running faster.

Recently i bought a Lenovo y500 laptop with 12 ram and 16gigs of SSD. It came with Windows 8 by deffault and what i wanted was to install Linux Ubuntu 12.04 alognside with the Windows 8. It didn't work out, because i could only log into linux. When i tried to log in in Widonws it said: "unknown command drivemap      invalid EFI file path, so i used the one key recovery. It loaded Windows but i noticed 2 things:1st. After loading the Lenovo logo the screen turns black without the cursor on it and stays that way for about 17-25 sec. That means that from 20 sec boot time now it is 40+.How could i fix that one?2nd. After creating the backup i divided the 1tb disk into smaller discs and after the rocovery they were the way i left them with all the games and media on them. I thought that the one key recovery would undo the partiton i have made. The 2nd one isnt bugging me out so much but the 20 secs extra boot time do. The changes i have made in bios are disabling secure boot and switching boot mode from UEFI to legacy. After that i switched secure boot to enabled and the boot mode to UEFI as it was in the beginning.

Answer:Lenovo y500 black screen after the lenovo logo slows down boot time

hi psskobraa,

Welcome to the Lenovo Forums.

Regarding your questions:
1. The additional 17-25sec boot time is probably caused by the UEFI Firmware / UEFI boot loader (see this flowchart) - this probably got modified when you installed Ubuntu. Can you try to boot back into the BIOS, press F9 to load default settings then press F10 to save It settings. If this doesn't work, is the boot time the same when Disabling Secure Boot and UEFI set to Disabled/Legacy first?

2. OneKey Recovery usually reimage the OS partition only (i.e. C:\) and will not affect any other partitions (i.e. D:\)

Welcome to the forum!

Could you tell us a bit more about the history of events that led up to your problem today?   What Operating system do you have installed on the system?

When was the last time it was working properly, yesterday?   Did you shut it down, or hibernate or sleep?

If you restart now, can you get into BIOS?  If you go into BIOS, can you see your hard disk recognized?

If you try to restart and press F12, can you get a boot device list?  If so, is your hard disk recognized?

Do you have any disks in the optical drive?

If you check the USB ports, are any of them broken with pins bent touching each other?

Hello this is my first post and I hope someone could lend me a hand. I have a Lenovo B series laptop, more specifically a B570. I've had it for over a year and a half now and it was working fine until I started to see some problems. My first encounter was sartup issues. The machine normally laggs whenever Windows boots up to the user screen. I checked for that and the problem was variface login and the fingerprint reader. Seems like they both caused a delay with the boot. Anyways I got pass that by not shutting down but hibernating.  A few months back I decided then to shut down my machine and that was my mistake. It started up and then lagged, I normally corrected this by jus holding the power botton and starting it up till it works. That worked for a while till that moment. I realized when I powered it down, it refused to pass the Lenovo boot screen and whenever I select F2/F8 all I get is "please wait..." and that lasts for hours. I tried replacing the harddrive, formatting it externally NOTHING. I tried troubleshooting such as RAM replacement n all but still no luck. Even removed the RAM and didnt even get a beep or nothing. Lights are on also. I even resored to CMOS battery pull and NOTHING seems to work. I also noticed that when this happens the processor fan stops spinning also. I really need to solve this issue due to me going to university and all.  Please Help! Thanks.

Answer:URGENT HELP! LENOVO B570 wont pass Lenovo Boot Logo.

hi Netflame,

Welcome to the Lenovo Community.

Can you try the following:
1, Remove the AC adapter and Battery then press & hold the power button for 30secs (this drains the power off the unit).
2. Reseat the CPU (see page 62 of the hardware maintenance manual)
3. After reseating CPU (if applicable, re=apply a thermal compound) and reconnect the following:

a. Fan and Heatsink Assembly
b. Systemboard Assembly
c. Memory Module
d. Keyboard Bezel

4. If applicable, use an external USB keyboard to boot into the BIOS, otherwise, reconnect also the Keyboard and try to boot into the BIOS by pressing or holding down F2. You could also try to press F12 to enter BIOS setup.

If you get into the BIOS,  press F9 to set BIOS to default and press F10 to save and exit BIOS. After exiting, power off the computer and reconnect the remaining peripherals.

If the above procedure doesn't work, you probably have a bad CPU, bad GPU, or a bad motherboard and you need to call lenovo or a local repair store to have it serviced.

Caution:
The CPU is extremely sensitive. When you service the CPU, avoid any kind of rough handling.

Edit: added maintenance manual link

Hope this helps.

Hello everyone, I have a problem with my Lenovo G500s  1.1 years (1 year & 1 month). It worked perfectly until last month. It started to freeze. I restarted the computer (btw I was using licenced win8 back then) and then the lenovo logo showed up and it stuck there. I was waiting for about 10 minutes, but nothing happened. I turned it off manually, and then turned it on,it was still frozen. after some trial of startup,  it worked normally. After 2 days it happened again. I thought it was the system, so I deleted the windows8 and installed windows8.1 licensed, it worked for a month and then again (last night) it just freezes at startup (lenovo logo shows up). Till now its frozen. I restarted it several times, it didnt work. I also pulled out battery & started on AC power which didnt work too. Obviously, i dont have warranty. Does anyone knows what could be the possible problem? I dont Know what to do. plz help...Thanks in advance!

I've never had an easy use with this PC eversince I purchased it. It first rejected Windows 7 to be installed due to BIOS incompatibility which I had been warned before. I flashed the new BIOS version shared across the forum that worked for some people, it worked for me too. Then just yesterday when I turned it on, it went into Lenovo logo for few seconds then restarted. It kept repeating the boot loop before I ran the power down to shut it completely. Already ran a system diagnose but found nothing. This already occurred before when I had to perform a windows fresh reinstallation for a constant fix, it runs normally for couple of weeks till yesterday when the problem came back. Any ideas on what to do in this situation ?

I have a Lenovo 3000 N100 laptop for the past two years.Apart from the famous battery issue with this laptop, I have not had any problems with this unit. Since yesterday, I am getting a black screen after logon to Windows XP.Yesterday, I was able to log on and then the laptop will go black after a minute or two after log on. Today, it has gotten worse, as soon as the Windows XP logo comes on, the screen goes black after a fewseconds. I also noticed that the Lenovo Icon displayed during Power On is also Teal in Color. I tried booting the laptop in Safe mode and the problem still remains.I tried booting the laptop using Windows XP CD and try to repair the Windows XP installation using R optionand still the screen goes black.  Please advice if this is a hardware or software or virus issue.

Hi there.  I have the same problem.  My screen is black all the time now with odd spurts of light occuring just after loading. My laptop is sadly out of guarantee so I cannot get any telephone help from IBM, however the chap I spoke to did hint that it was a problem with the LCD cable. Then I phoned my local PC repair man and he said it sounds like the bulb, because I can still faintly see the outline of whats on the screen through the "blackness". So.  Not sure! Have you come to any resolution yet?  Meantime I have my laptop pluggged into an external monitor until I get it fixed.  Susan

Answer:rebuilding your lenovo x240 - process suggestions?

Hi,

If you want the Lenovo recovery partition you'll have to wait for the Lenovo media.  It doesn't sound like you made a recovery flash drive (unless that's what you mean by 8 on USB) and even so that won't restore the recovery partition.  At least it didn't on the last machine I tested.  That may be different now.

If you pick an option that involves manually installing drivers from the support site, just install ThinkVantage System Update and let it do that work for you.

The latest driver and dependency software DOES NOT WORK correctly.   I can manage battery 1 or the internal battery, but I cannot manage battery 2. Once I get the driver installed.   I change the following in the registry.ChargeStartControl                            35 (decimal)ChargeStartPercentage                     35 (decimal)ChargeStopControl                           100 (decimal)ChargeStopPercentage                    100 (decimal) The changes made here ONLY EFFECT battery 1, battery 2 will not charge above 85%. Now after intalling the Lenovo Settings tile and looking in the power area,  it shows that battery 1 is set correctly.  Battery 2 is set to start changing at 101% and stop charging at 150%!!!!   I cannot find these numbers in the registry. Better question is why doesnt lenovo settings have a hook to make adjustments to battery management!!! Frustrated!!!    This works find in windows 7, windows 8 Lenovo drop the ball.

For meanwhile 6 (!) weeks lenovo is not able to repair my X240. I never thought, that it would be so difficult to repair one of  lenovos highend laptops with 3 years service and extended warrenty.I have to mention, that this ist my 2nd X240. The first one was replaced by lenovo, because it was so bad build, that the local lenovo service denied to open the laptop.  The new one (4 months old) had until now two new displays,  three mainboards and a new SDD.About the 10th of december i opened a service request at IBM ESC, because the laptop didn't boot and the new display (the one before died) showed such an extreme ghosting, that one could read on the lock-screen, what was on the screen, before i locked the screen. Second problem: the laptop didn't wake up from standby.Got a ticket number, but the service needed weeks to get the needed parts. In janaury 2015 the service showed up. Meanwhile the laptop booted again. They replaced the display and mainboard. The technician repaced the mainboard to be "sure" that this will not happen again. Result: the laptop didn't boot. His opinion: either the SDD or Mainboard or SSD cable is the reason. He did not use my "old" mainboard, instead he left and said they will contact me again. After he left i saw that he did not assemble the body of the laptop correct wtih the result, that above the rear battery the body was open and bent. And it happend.. nothing! They closed the ticket!!!A week later the mailroom ... Read more

I just bought my new lenovo thinkpad x240, I like the laptop and this is the second day using it. However, at first time I use the laptop I realized that it doesnt have the "backlit keyboard", Does the lenovo thinkpad x240 have this feature or not? if it's right I'm really disappointed of this. I think all the new lenovo laptops have this feature. Also tried to press "Fn" + the "spacebar" its doesnt work with me. By the way, the spacebar doesn't have the light symbol on it.Thanks.

Answer:Lenovo thinkpad x240, backlit keyboard

Not all model has the backlit keyboard, it's an option when you configure the machine.

Lenovo finally released their X240 and the Full HD and touchscreen options are gone!ThinkPad X240 Ultrabook Laptop | Lenovo | Lenovo (US)
I actually ordered until I looked at it more closely and released that the IPS option is not full HD and is not touch. And then had to cancel order.
I guess the T440? How could the product launch reviews change so much from the final product release?
Total bummer.

Answer:Lenovo X240 Released and Total Letdown!

Can someone help me understand this?? Is the $250 more to buy a thicker laptop that doesn't last as long, and only has haswell? i seriously want to understand what Lenovo is smoking. also, whatever that product is, is it commercially available?

Answer:Lenovo g5070 blur screen only after lenovo logo

Hi Abdul,

Welcome to Lenovo Forums.

When using Windows 8.1 on a computer with a display featuring a high number of dots per inch (high-DPI), some desktop applications may appear somewhat blurry as compared to other applications on the screen.

In order to provide an optimal experience on high-DPI displays, desktop applications need to detect the DPI of the display which is in use, and scale their graphical elements, text, and screen layout appropriately. Some applications do not implement this; thus they may not look as sharp.

If there is not an updated DPI-aware version of the application available, you may be able to alter the appearance of the application by using one of the following methods. Note that this may result in less desirable results, depending on the application.

Disable DPI virtualization for the application. To do this, right-click the application?s shortcut and then click Properties. On the Compatibility tab, select "Disable Display Scaling on High DPI Settings", and then click OK. This will cause the text in the application to appear clearer, but if the application does not properly handle high DPI settings, it may have adverse side effects such as truncated text or incorrectly sized graphical elements.

Lower the overall Windows DPI setting. To do this, open the desktop Display control panel (or search for "dpi-scaling" from the Start Screen) and adjust the slider under "Change... Read more

Hi, my just over a year old laptop will not load. I recently upgraded from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10 and ever since I did i've been having "blue screens of death" errors. There were a couple, but most of the time it was a "watchdog" error that would happen instead of the usual booting up of Windows after being off for a while it would just come up with an message saying it was recovering from an error and then eventually it would load windows and everything would be fine.  But no more. Just got back from being gone for the weekend and the computer no longer loads anything but the Lenovo splash logo. Any ideas on what might be causing this? Is my hard drive or ram fried? Any thing I can do? (I've tried pressing F2, Fn and any other key combinations I can think of. I've been looking online for answers and have yet to find someone with the same issue. Other people seem to be at least able to get into the BIOS, but I can't seem to do that, either.) Thanks in advance!

Answer:Lenovo Y410P only loads "Lenovo" logo, won't boot up!

Better go back to Win 8.1 with your backup image then. The drive isn't bootable or trashed info and cannot continue further. Impossible to trouble shoot from what you've indicated anyway.

The laptop just won't go past the Lenovo logo and stays there for hours. I've tried everything such as holding F2 and messing around with everything there, holding F12 and booting from everything there, using the OneKey Recovery and tried the Sytem Recovery, which gets past the logo but ends as a black screen. It won't start up no matter what I do. I'm hoping someone with a wider knowledge than I could helpme out with this problem. Story is that it began to get very slow after a System Restore (the Disk was constantly at 100%), so I decided to restore it back to before I restored it and I waited 3 hours at the screen where it said it was storing some stuff and registering things. I looked up what to do and one solution was to shut it down and try again. I did that and now it won't start up. Please help solve this.

Welcome to the Lenovo Community !

Try clearing the CMOS.  That procedure can be useful in correcting some boot up problems.  To clear the CMOS, do this.....

1. Unplug the charger / adapter. 2. Remove the battery. 3. Press and hold the Power Button for 15 seconds. 4. Re-install the battery, plug in the charger / adapter if needed and power up the system to see if the problem was resolved.

Hi, I have a problem with the sound. Whenever I try to use bluetooth speaker, the sound starts being chunky, crashing with too many delays. I have tried two different speakers. After some research through the net and many attempts for fixes, (I think) I found what is the problem. However, I still can not understand excactly how to solve it. Thus, I need some help. I think a picture of the DPC latency will explain everything. Thank you very much for your time!

Hi All, I was wondering if somebody can help me indentify the missing driver from my Lenovo X240. I'm currently running windows 7 64 sp1 Enterprise and I installed all the drivers except for one. I've contacted Lenovo technical support in Atlanta Georgia and they couldn't figure it out. I'm attaching a few screen shots to see if anybody knows what the missing device could be...   Thanks for your help. Hanss

Answer:Lenovo X240 Unknown Device Windows 7 64bit

Hi Hanss,

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

The hardware ID you have given points to TPM module of your device. The BIOS item for Intel Platform Trust Technology is there for the benefit of the Windows 8.1 security requirements. Since you are using Windows 7, you can safely disable it in BIOS.

Hope this helps!

Best regards,
Mithun.

I've got a problem with the new system instalation from the Recovery onto the new SSD disc. I've the old one broken. Bought the new one, and when trying to instal (using few recoverys, one original and few from different Lenovo models). And it still comes back to the boot window menu (after few seconds of try). I've bought today the new DVD burner but the problem is still the same. Now I've even tried to instal pure WINDOWS 7 (not recovery), and can't do that.  Laptop can see the USB CD, but if I chose to boot from the one, it tries and and after a while comes back to the boot menu. Can anybody tell me what could it be?

We have a new software product that we are releasing as a beta, in order to get valuable feedback from our customers who might be interested in trying it.

The software is called Lenovo InstantOn Beta and here's how it works:

Today, Windows 8 running on laptops, by default, goes to Sleep mode when the lid is closed.  This causes your programs to stop running, and your internet/VPN connection is dropped.  What InstantOn does, is change the meaning of the lid close action "Sleep".  Instead of immediately going to sleep mode when the lid is closed, InstantOn will make the system stay awake for 1 hour.  During this hour, the CPU is set to minimum speed, and the speakers/microphone/touchpad/LCD are turned off.  However your network connection and apps stay alive, they just run at a very slow speed.

InstantOn mode uses more battery than the system in Sleep mode, but less than the system that is simply idle without InstantOn.  The goal is to make a laptop behave more like a tablet (e.g. connected standby) where it can be resumed instantly, at least for 1 hour.

Currently, the software is only supported on Windows 8, and only on X240/X240s.  The software requires special BIOS support that only exists in these 2 systems.  If you have X240/X240s, and try it, let me know how it works for you.  Thanks!

Hi guys, I have got a system board damage, so I need to exchange it. I have never done it before, so I'm struggling with findings of correct part for exchanging to. As far as I understood FRU number of the system board is what I need. I have found one which says 04x5166 right next to the RAM slot. Is it the only reference I need to use to find a right part? I have found a part on eBay, where in description it is written 04x5166 and three different numbers. You think this one should fit? https://m.ebay.com/itm/QTY-1x-Lenovo-Thinkpad-X240-laptop-motherboard-intel-i7-4600U-VIUX1-NM-A091-/... I would really like to try to repair my old friend first before going for an expensive new machine  lookign forward to hear from you! Anton

Hi everybody Is anybody else experiencing this? I have the x240 in an ultrabase and two monitors connected, one on DVI and the other on VGA. Now the analog monitor is working fine, the digital one on the other hand keeps on disappearing once a while and returning after 4-5 seconds. This in annoying and preventing me from working, happens several times per hour. Has anybody else experienced this? We have bought several x240, some have this, some do not have this. The screen of the laptop itself does not have this issue. OS: WIN7 64bit, drivers downloaded from lenovo directly, system center hasn't found any updates. Dock used: ultra dock 90w 40A20090CH Thanks for feedback. Alan
