I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer:x220 with 16gb. eGPU will or will not work?

Yes it will work via the express card. You will need an express card slot and a processor with a HD3000 or better, as far as I know there is no processor option for the X220, that does not have one of those. Be aware that eGPU today is mostly a DYI solution with lot's of hassles, but it will work. Here is something you should thoroughly read and understand before going down this road: Good luck.

Answer:Betreff: 100% CPU load with 16GB RAM + eGPU

This topic is to continue X230 expresscard adressing (eGPU) discussion. The old topic is marked as solved and Lenovo doesn't pay any attention to it anymore while people keep complaing about 100% CPU load with more than 8GB RAM installed, i.e. 12GB, 16GB. I counted over ten Lenovo forum users having the same problem. What has been tried so far:* Memory diagnostic via F11at boot, all PASS* Swapping memory sticks* Trying various memory combinarions: 8 + 8, 8 + 4, 4 + 8 The problem seems to occure only for GPU cards with at leat 512MB RAM. It would be great to hear that Lenovo is working on the fix.

So, i'm using 7 ultimate, and I've recently installed16GB of G.skill DDR 1866 mhz memory (2 8GB sticks). I've gone into the BIOS and manually set the speed to 1866, and the system is only showing about half of it as "usable" So the first thing I checked was of course the ram itself. I've reseatted the memory several times and made sure they're in the correct color coded slots. I've also tried checking and unchecking the advanced boot option in msconfig to use maximum memory. Here is a screenshot. Oh and yes I have the latest version of my BIOS. eeeeeeeeverything on my system is up to date.

Answer:16GB DDR3 1866 installed. (7.97GB usable) 7 Ultimate

Question: X220 eGPU

I intend to run my X220 with an eGPU. However, the local PC community, including hardware retailers do not seem to know much about eGPUs (no one seems to stock or even know what a PE4L/H is) and therefore I cannot get much help there.  I have read through nando4's guide on the forum but unfortunately I do not understand 3/4 of the thread as I am not too technically adept. I have not read all 746 pages, just the first post. To start with, I'd like to know what parts are required, and how to check my hardware for compatible parts. I already have the following: X220 - i7-2620M, QM67, 8GB 1333MHz RAM, Intel HD3000 iGPU, 54mm ExpressCard slotExternal LCD display - 1360x768 display resolution, HDMI inputHDMI cableATX PSU - I think it's about 305W, salvaged from a Dell Dimension 5150 I have narrowed GPU choices down to the following: Besides the above, I think all I need are: PE4H (not sure which version),EC2C and SWEX as seen here: Also, the above website states that this is not for home & office use. Therefore, is it actually safe to use an eGPU at home for gaming? Few things I'm not sure of: 1. Which version of PE4H d... Read more

If you really want to do this you do need to read that whole thread on NBR.  Its not any sort of simple 'plug and play' thing.

Hey, I just recently formatted my hard drive, and reinstalled all the drivers, updated Windows, and such. The computer has run perfectly until today when I tried to fire up Half-Life 2 off of Steam. The game loads, then goes to a blank black screen. I can hear the intro sounds and menu music, but can't see a thing. Curious to see if this was just a Steam problem, I tried playing some of my games on discs. I tried Rome: Total War and it was the same deal. Black screen with audio. Then, I attempted Battle for Middle-Earth, and it too presented me with the same issue. I'm forced to CTRL+ALT+DEL out of it and end the process. The green light on the monitor stays lit, and doesn't go into any sort of sleep or loss of connection mode. Now, my computer is old, but not so old that it can't handle these games. I played them all prior to formatting my hard drive with no problems.

I've uninstalled and reinstalled the latest video card drivers, and I have reinstalled the latest DirectX. The DirectX Diagnostic Tool shows no problems and I pass all the tests. I've searched for solutions, but can't say I have found an answer to my problem. Is it a problem with my video card itself? DirectX? Maybe a video codec problem? A resolution problem?

I'd greatly appreciate any help.

P.S. Here are my specs (quite old, I know):

I just replaced my power supply because after coming back from vacation my PC wouldn't boot. The new supply power works but I get to the XP load scree with the little progress bar and it just hangs there. I restored to last know good point and that did nothing and I did a system restore and neither seemed to help. I am able to start in safe mode but I'm not sure where to turn and I'm not sure what happened while I was gone. Any help with this?

Answer:Solved: Windows XP hangs at black load screen

I was able to resolve this issue by going into Windows in Safemode. I went to my computer and right clicked the C drive and chose Properties/Tools/Error-Checking.

I check marked both options for Error fixing and then rebooted back to Safe Mode. It took a long time to do the error checking but when it finished it rebooted and Windows XP came back normally.

This is something to try for those with a similar issue.

I built this computer about five years ago, but have upgraded a lot of it over the years. The only original parts left are the mobo (Abit IS-7) and the processor (3 GhZ bought in 2004).

A few weeks ago it started freezing and restarting randomly. Sometimes, on restarting, I would get the "Serious error" pop-up, which I always sent, and always got different results. Sometimes it would say it was an unknown driver error, sometimes an anti-virus error, once a RAM error. I had just upgraded the RAM when this started, so I ran the M$ testing tool several times, no errors. I also removed the new RAM, which didn't solve the problem, and put it back in.

Last night, the screen went black and the music I was listening to stopped dead. I waited a minute, then cold restarted. Now the PC won't even boot. It starts to load the BIOS, then black screen and nothing. A few times I've gotten the safe mode prompt, but only for a second or two (not long enough to make a decision), then black screen. All of the fans and internal lights are still on. There is no change when the screen goes black, other than the screen going black.

What I've tried:
-Windows recovery. First time I put the XP disc in, did the "press any key", got the black screen for about a minute, then the blue screen with the install/repair/exit options. I selected "repair" and was told Windows couldn't find my HDD. Okay, I had an HDD go bad years back after a similar bout ... Read more

My friend uses her old system just for email, the other during loading Windows 2000 Pro SP4, the screen became a black and white rectangular checkerboard pattern. Bios loaded fine, POSTed ok, all memory fine. This happened several times. Specs: motherboard Abit BE6-II (all capacitors look ok, none domed), P-III 1000Mhz @100Mhz FSB, 3 x256 MB Kingston value RAM, Seagate 7200.7 ST 3120026A 120GB, Radeon 9000 Pro, NIC Netgear FA311v2, Soundblaster pci512. Antec Sonata case, 380W powersupply. HDD checks fine with Seatools, long test. I ran Memtest for hours, RAM seems fine. Always protected with Norton Internet Security, and updated with all updates, including Windows. I have restarted it a dozen times and it hasn't had any problems. She's happy it works, but I'm curious as to what it could be? Thanks in advance.

Answer:Solved: Stoped during Win2k load to black and white checkerboard screen

Since the machine repaired itself, and the problem no longer exists I can only guess. My best guess would be either a voltage drop out on one of the power supply rails, or a defective capacitor or capacitors on the video card. If I only had one guess, it would be a power supply rail voltage drop out.

If the situation re-occurs, access BIOS and check the power supply rail voltages, i.e +12v, +5v, and +3.3v. They should be withing +/- 5% of their values.

I'm no sure if this is the right section to post in, so sorry if it's not. I have a tablet computer, called an x220 tablet. I was browsing the Internet, and left for a minute, and when I came back the screen was black with a flashing white dash in the top left corner. I've turned it off, taken the battery out, and tried restarting it many times. It will go to the openIng "thinkpad" screen, then back to the black screen with flashin underbar. Please help!

Answer:x220 tablet: Not booting, just bios screen, than black screen

The Thinkpad Tablet and the X220t are two different devices. Regarding your problem, I fear that the boot sector is defective. You'll probably have to reinstall Windows.

Just purchased a new X220 w/ only 4GB. Planning on upgrading the RAM myself and I have a couple of questions 1) Does the voltage of RAM matter?2) I see most on Newegg is 1.5V but a few are 1.35V, what is the voltage of the ones that come stock w/ the X220?3) If I got crazy and decided to go 16GB (2x8GB) would they work? Thanks

Answer:X220 RAM Voltage and 16GB

16GB RAM works fine for my X220. I purchased the 1.35V kit because theoretically if the laptop can run them at 1.35V it would consume less power and improve battery life, however I still have no idea how to check the actual voltage - the laptop could probably be running the SODIMMs at 1.5V instead of 1.35V though.

Hi there, I am facing a awkward problem with my X220 (2540M, SSD). Sometimes, most of the time when I play some games (Need for Speed for example), after some time, screen on my laptop goes blank. I have my AC adapter plugged in and battery is fully charged. There is only one more symptom left, the battery indicator on the back side of the lid is flashing orange. The game still runs in the background, I can hear it, but the screen is completely shut off. All I have to do at this stage is close the lid and open it again (I set my Windows to NOT to enter sleep mode, if I close the lid). The battery indicator then begins to light steadily in green colour (like the battery is fully charged) and everything is working fine again, and then, after some time, it happens again. Does anybody know, what might be wrong? Any help would be very appreciated! Thank you!

Hi there Lenovo SMEs! My wife's X220 is having an intermittent problem that recently has become much more frequent. After hitting the power button, the system seems to boot fine (showing the Lenovo & then windows screens)...but then the system will only show a black screen. We used to be able to simply hit the power button to fix the issue, but that workaround is not seeming to work as well. We have tried hitting the ThinkVantage button and running the system diagnostic, but it doesn't find any known issues. Any ideas? Thanks in advance!

Answer:X220 screen is black when it starts

Did you power off the laptop yesterday?
Did you mean, that the laptop seemed to be turned on as you opened it this morning?
You can connect an external monitor to your X220. Maybe the video-out is switched to the external VGA-connector.
Try FnF7 to switch the video-output to the internal display after turning on and delay approx. 3-5 seconds between the FnF7 key-pressings.
Otherwise press and hold down the power-key until the laptop turns off, and start it again.

I am having an issue with my Z50 which is running Windows 10.  The screen will suddenly go black while I am working.  Boots up fine. Happens maybe once a week or so.  When it goes black, the num lock and caps lock keys are still lit and I can hear it running, so it's not sleeping.   I can't find anything to bring it back up - moving the mouse or clicking buttons does no good.  Only solution is to hit the power button to put it to sleep, then wake it back up.  Anybody else encounter this?

Hello, It's my first post, so welcome . I've been a lenovo thinkpad user for a month - X220 with SSD, W7 Professional, umts module and extended battery (if more information is needed I can send the full description) - and a strange bug occurs to my new laptop sometimes. After pressing the power button most of controls (camera, speaker mute, microphone mute) always make a flash. Next, most of the times (80-90%) the thinkpad logo shows up and the Windows 7 boots - that's ok. Unfortunately, about one in ten trials end in getting a black screen just after the flashes of the controls. The screen is enabled - it is just black. I must disable laptop (I don't have to keep the power button long - simple pressing is enough), and then, the second trial always succeed. It only occurs during the fresh, full boot - I didn't notice it after restarts, back from sleep or hibernation. I use docking stations, but it occurs in both ways - with or without docking station. It's not a huge problem to ignore that issue, but I'm worried that it may result in a more serious problem in the future. Any ideas and help will be appreciated. --Best regards,Krzysztof

Yesterday updated from Win7Pro to Win10Pro. The x220 does have a standard 320GB HDD and a mSATA 240GB SSD as main drive with now the Win10 installation. I still have the original Win7 on the HDD since I migrated to SSD in the first place. At the end I was presented with a black screen and the Lenovo Center opened. All the tests was passed. I closed it and no desktop was available. A few reboot and the situation is I can login but after that no desktop is shown only a white small rectangle saying "Personalized settings. (Not responding)". Trying to do anything I'm told Windows Explorer is not responding. I can reach the desktop in Safe Mode, opening the Settings I can't access to screens such as Network & Internet or Update & Security (the window is closed), the others are accesible. Wifi also doesn't work only Eth. Any suggestions how to proceed is welcomed, in Safe Mode I can't use Lenovo Update.

When I'm doing something graphically demanding like a video game my computer crashes to a black screen and a buzzing coming from my speakers, and I have to hard reset. It use to only do it when doing games like ArmaII but now it does it in minecraft and BF2. I have cleaned the inside of my computer, and I have checked temperatures in BIOS and 3rd party, and they are in a good range. I have done a clean install of windows 8 and re-installed all my drivers. So I am sure this is a hardware problem. Someone suggested that it might be a power supply problem, but I think it may be with my video card. What do you think is wrong with it? What should I do / replace?

Hello, I am not 100% sure where to post this. But as my computer is a Windows Vista, I'll try here.

When I attempt to edit videos using Cyberlink Powereditor, the videos appear black with working audio.
Same scenario happens if I compress videos with WMM, and then attempt to watch them. Black screen, clear audio.
I've had this problem for quite a while.
Attempts I've done to fix: Codecs, different media players, and updating graphic driver.

Answer:[SOLVED] Display Issue, Black screen with Audio

Problem solved. If anyone else is experiencing the same problem, my graphic card is "Nvidia geforce 9600 gt"
I simply "rolled" it back to an earlier version instead of "updating" it.
Then it didn't work, so I reinstalled it manually by using nvidia's download page.
Now it works perfectly, and I can edit anything in cyberlink powereditor.

Hi all,First post!  My Dad's Lenovo laptop goes to a black screen when starting up, so is unusable.I haven't seen it in the flesh yet but have started to research things for him and have found that 'black screen' shows up quite a lot for Windows 10 and Lenovo PCs! We were so impressed with my Dad's PC I've ended up with the same model myself:Lenovo YOGA 500 Convertible Laptop, Intel Core i7, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD, 15.6" Touch Screen. Also labelled as: Yoga 500-15IBD Laptop (ideapad)  I see some people mentioning hardware failures and others device driver problems with the graphic card etc. but haven't read a definite cause/fix for this so far. I've just found this recent critical BIOS update for this PC which mentions the black screen problem:Software name: BDCN63WW Version 63[Important updates] Fix Win 10 lid close black screen issue. haven't seen this mentioned in the forums? Has anyone else used this?If the PC always boots to a black screen I'll obviously have trouble installing this! I'm hoping that it will boot in Safe Mode or I'm going to have some trouble installing it?! I don't know whether to install the BIOS update on my own machine which is running fine - I think I'll wait until I see my Dad's laptop first which will be in a few weeks. Has anyone had any experience of this BIOS update or other comments on this?Thanks. &nb... Answer:Yoga 500 'BLACK SCREEN' - BIOS update: "[Important updates] Fix Win 10 lid close black screen issue"

I'm still wondering about this... I've just updated the Lenovo Companion after seeing it mentioned in another thread. It looks like this s/w is supposed to scan the PC and recommend Lenovo updates - critical and nice to have ones. Initially the Companion was showing a critical update for Lenovo SHAREit and a recommended one for my BIOS. It says I'm currently on BDCN28WW and offered something like v61 and not the 63 I mentioned in my first post? After letting it update SHAREit and re-scanning the BIOS update is no longer being offered and still shows me on v28 ??? I'm not sure I trust this 'Companion' app!My laptop seems to be running fine so I don't want to break it updating the BIOS if it's not required. For all I know my Dad's broken one may be broken because it upgraded?! Does anyone else use/trust the Companion app?And has anyone else seen it change it's mind on recommended BIOS updates? Thanks.

Hi, I just purchased a new y510p from NewEgg, and I've already had an issue with it - the first time I used it, the battery died (really my fault, I had it plugged in but forgot to turn the surge protector on) but even after trying everything, upon restarting it, the screen would not turn on, the fans would go off, and it would restart repeatedly. Plugging in an HDMI failed to help, so I assumed it was a GPU failure of some sort. Realizing this, I tried removing the ultrabay (in my case, the one with the secondary NVIDIA GPU) and it restarted just fine, screen worked and everything. Re-inserting the GPU after this point causes no trouble whatsoever. I initially chalked it up as an anomaly and possibly a small bug of the ultrabay system, but while I was playing a video game a little while ago, windows 8 crashed to the infamous BSOD and I had to remove the ultrabay and restart the system again in order for it to function. I'm worried about whether this is going to be a recurring thing, or if maybe its something somebody else has had occur? I really don't want to send the laptop back as I'm quite happy with it, and the issue seems to be the additional GPU. (edit) I just wanted to add that playing a few other fairly graphically intensive games didn't cause any issue, I'm unsure whether it's an issue with lack of SLI support of the somewhat older game I played or anything.  Thanks for any advice.

Answer:[SOLVED] New Y510P - system crashes, screen black on reboot - possible GPU issue

I had to use Lenovo OneTouch recovery (much easier than I thought it would be, I have to say) and start anew, then install the updated version (in my case oct/dec 2013 versions) of every driver on the system. After doing this, it seems that its running quite well and I haven't had a crash yet. I'll update again if anything changes. I have to say I'm rather perturbed that Lenovo would distribute a laptop which has Windows 8.1, but no compatible drivers on it whatsoever, but if anybody else has this problem, driver updates are the way to go.

Thank you for helping. So I am a blizzard gamer, have WoW, Diablo 2. Now all 3 of blizz's "great" games. Well I bought the box set, to include SC and SC brood war. So I played a few lvls as the humans. But then all the sudden when I am finishing lvls now the computer just goes to a black screen. And sits there until I hit space bar or esc. This last time, AFTER I updated my DirectX and my ATI Radeon X1250 Video card, i get this error message.
The instruction at 0x004bdb81 referenced at 0x0000001. The memory could not be read.
So stats stuff now.
I run on an Acer computer. Windows Vista 32-bit Service pack 2. BE-2350 AMD Athlon 64X2 Dual Core Processor. Aspire M1100 Model. Memory 2.00GB. Rating 3.0. ATI Radeon X1200 Series [AL1916W] (X1250). McAfee is running too. Well I hope some one can help me. All the searching I have done so far gets me no where just more questions. SO reason behind this thread is so I can get personalized help rather then view others where there mac, or diff proc, or vid card. THANK YOU FOR YOUR HELP.

Answer:[SOLVED] SC Black Screen/Freeze issue.0x004bdb81 referenced at 0x0000001

Welcome to TSF J_Ch3ck.

Do the other two games still work after you updated your Directx and Drivers as you may have got a corrupt driver or something along that lines and it may just be reupdating them...

I have HP Envy 17.3 m7-n109dx, windows 10 64-bit I got the windows blue screen, then when the windows attempted to restart a black scrren showed up, and windows did not boot. I tried several things, but nothing worked. Here is a list of what I have tried: 1. I did a hard reset. 2. I made sure the batery and the AC adaptor are not the problem. 3. I tried pressing the ESC seveal times after powering the device, but nothing happened (to load the safe mode). 4. I tried to restore the bios by pressing the windows and B keys, and then pressing and then releasing the power botton, and continue to press the other two keys. When I do that, I can see the hard drive light comes on for a few seconds, then the screen lights, but it stays blank. I contine to press the two keys for 1-2 minutes, but nothing shows on the screen. Then when I release the windows and the B keys, the screen goes dark, and the power buttoon continues to light. The power goes off if I press the power button for several seconds. I tired this several times. 5. I tried step 4, but with a USB drive. The same happened. 6. I tried pressing the power button, then the  F2 key (several times). The screen continued to be black. 7. I tried the pressing the windows key + P. Nothing happened. 8. I tried to run HP Hardware Diagnostics (UEFI) from a USB, but the screen remaind black. 9. I tried to load the safe mode from a USB, but the screen remained black. If there is ... Read more

Hey guys. I've had this problem for quite a while now, about a year. However recently it has made the machine unusable. The screen flickers/jumps/skews/malforms etc whenever I try to use it this past week.  In the past year, I have had a problem with the display but only 1 vertical area of the screen would do this and it would mostly just turn solid black. I would fix this by applying some sort of pressure on that area in the bezel right above the keyboard. This let the laptop work for about a year with that problem and I did not need to spend money getting it fixed.  I'm thinking this is a hardware issue with a wire or something getting damaged that connects the motherboard to the display. I have dropped it a few times over the course of 4 years. However, nothing too serious and it is a thinkpad after all.  Anyone know what needs to be fixed/how much it will cost? //EDIT: Screenshots   YouTube Clip

My laptop screen has developed a vertical grey band about 10cm wide which starts very light but as I leave the laptop switched on gets increasingly dark and when dark I can see effectively a shadow of a previous image on the screen, making it very difficult to read. I'm concerned that it may not simply be a screen replacement issue as there seems some comment that it may be a connector cable issue.  Any ideas?

Greetings! I've recently purchased the V17 Nitro Black from Costco: I couldn't find the model number listed there and it's still in the mail so that is the link to the product, I'm sure the technicians here are familiar with it. I've read that, because it is a Black Edition that is equipped with a Thunderbolt 3 port it should fully support universal eGPU solutions designed to work with Thunderbolt 3. However, I have also read that eGPU over Thunderbolt 3 may (in general) require special BIOS support that is not necessarily inherent in a laptop with a Thunderbolt 3 port. As a result, I'm asking any knowledgeable members here as well as the technicians: does this laptop support an eGPU connection? I'm not trying to ask some kind of legally binding "gotcha" question - I understand that these are muddy waters and that Acer may not have conducted in-house testing on this. All I'm asking is what are the best guesses as to whether or not this would work based on what we currently know? This laptop is especially interesting from an eGPU perspective because it is one of the few 17" 4k screens (which would benefit greatly from an eGPU) that has a Thunderbolt 3 port and is affordable - so I know I can't be the only one wondering this. The laptop's only real weaknesses are its optical drive (premium laptops still coming out with DVD-RW ... Ihave owned a Windows 7 X220 Tablet for about 3 years, but never previously ugraded the Lenovo software on it. I saw this was possible, ticked various upgrades and set it off to download and install. On restarting the screen is black - with only a flat white cursor top left. I called Lenovo who said they suspected a bios upgrade had conflicted with something else being installed at the same time (I had ticked multiple upgrades at once), and suggested Ilook and ask for help on the forum. They said they thopught I needed to roll back the bios upgrade but Idon't know how to. I run Trend Micro security suite which was not swithced off when I did the upgrade. Any suggestions at all would be really welcome as the machine is effectively dead and unusable unless I can get it back to the previous set-up. ( Isuspect there are likely to be restore  points but cannot do anything at all at present) Thanks very much    cnwlenovo 15 Feb 2015

Answer:Disaster - X220 tablet - screen black on reboot after installing Lenovo upgrades

Ihave just (after posting this request), and 2 weeks after the failed attempt to get the computer to restart, tried again with the laptop powered onto the mains - it must have completely lost battery power in the meantime, successfully rebooted into Windows, the machine installed Windows upgrqades as it booted, and restarted itself in the process. Iliterally bit my nails as this was going on - and pleased to report the macjine now seems to have opened up OKin windows. Phew!!!      Wonder if the "bad loop"it may have gotten into when Iwas tryoing to reboot several times before - resulting in black screen and white cursor top left - may have died with a complete power down. In any event Iam hugely relieved - so Lenovo upgrades were obviously "self-correcting and troubleshotting after all.... Cnwlenovo 15 February 2015

Hello, I recently purchased a x220 and I am very happy with it. I turned off  "sleep when closed" for some reason and then accidently left it in my bag for like 15-20mins. It was hot but didn't really smell like burnt plastic or anything. However I feel as if the screen is harder to get at the right brightness. It feels as if I have to get a very precise angle to view the screen at the proper brightness/clarity. However it is hard for me to say if there is any difference to before as this happened only a week after using it. It could be acting just fine and I am just paranoid so my question is has there been any issues that have come up like this before? Has overheating in a bag or something ever caused the LCD screen to function just slightly improperly? Thank you,

Answer:x220 got hot, and now screen display clarity issue?

Well, first of all, I hope you're talking about the basic, TN LCD display, not the upgraded "Premium HD" IPS LCD screen. Anyway, personally I feel like it's so easy to be paranoid about screen quality and possible minor screen damage or defects, but Lenovo has owned up to the "ghosting" issue, so things can really happen sometimes. In your case, I wouldn't worry. Provided you are indeed talking about the basic TN screen and not the IPS, it sounds like your screen's viewing angles are performing normally. For some extra confidence, the Notebookcheck review of the X220 says their test unit got so hot under the sun that the plastic began to warp and bow, and even then, they didn't mention any screen degredation. And for that matter, isn't the X220 Mil-spec tested for heat?

However, I can purchase PE4H from other distributor. My E420 uses 4 GB RAM (I will upgrade up to 8 GB) & Intel HD 3000. Many thanks in advance. Regards,  Haris

I have looked through loads of other similar problems to mine but can't find an answer.

A couple of hours after a Windows update, I noticed my brand new laptop running very slow for something that should be a speed machine. I scanned it with antivirus, spybot, tuneup utilities, scandisk, and windows malicious removal tool. Nothing showed up!!

After a thorough scan disk effort everything seemed to work very well so I decided to make my acer restore disk just incase anything happened in the future so that i could boot form this dvd and be fine. Like a dumbass though I decided to move to a more comfortable spot which in turn managed to pull the power cable out of the laptop during the burn process. My battery was not in the machine so it killed the computer power. (pretty unbelievable when im reading this back but honestly this is what happened!!!)

Now Vista wont load up... It takes an age to get to username and password if ever, but then when i click to load it just goes to a black screen and nothing will show up. It stays like that for hours.

I just want to scrap everything on the system and start from scratch.

Its an acer computer and im pretty sure there is an option to restore laptop to factory settings but as i can't access windows i cant click on it to do this.

Ive used F8 and out of these options

Repair your computer.....None of the options worked (no restore point on the machine for some reason, and i dont have a restore disk as vista was pre load... Read more

Question: T430 + eGPU issue

Ok,So i'll let you guys know ive made every effort to resolve this before you decide its a beaten down topic and ignore it. Ive even gone to computer shops and have paid close to $100 to make this work, but unfortunately no success. I have a T430 laptop with the HD4000 as iGPU and NVS5400m as the dGPU. I purchased the PE4H express-card setup to get this working.I disable the Discrete card in my bios, I can view both the integrated as well as the External nvidia card in my device manager. Trouble is (According to the computer shop techies) the intel chip is not releasing image to my external video card even if he disables both the iGPU and the dGPU. I just dont know what to do at this point and its getting frustrating. I can see my external Nvidia card in device manager why wont it shoot out video to my monitor ? Im running bios 2.2 . is that an issue ?

I have been having this problem since a week or so. Broni has helped me in malware forum to rule out malware as responsible. My machine is clean and I was refered here for further help.

Here is my problem:

At boot-time, I see windows XP load screen with the progress bar, the progress bar advances to the end and then, the screen turns pitch black and all is see is an arrow cursor I can move around. I thought until yesterday that this was a permanent freeze-up, but if I wait, say, 6 minutes, the black screen disappears and windows then starts normally.

Last week, problem was intermittent, it now happens all the time.

Windows boot-up was fine before.

Please help me.

Answer:Windows load screen at boot, looong black screen, then normal startup

I had this tons of times with my old XP PC. It is normal if you have a lot of files on the HDD and you have little RAM. How much RAM do you have? What is the capacity of the HDD? And do you have the Windows XP disc? Would you be willing to upgrade the RAM and/or the OS if we must resort to that? Or would you rather just buy a new PC?

At the System Recovery Options screen, make note of the drive letter assigned to your boot drive (normally C and click Next
At the Chose a Recovery Tool window, click on Command Prompt. You will be sitting at X:\Sources directory

For sfc, type sfc /scannow /offbootdir=c:\ /offwindir=c:\windows and press Enter (use the letter from above)
Let either run to completion undisturbed.

my PSU went out and i had it replaced and since i replaced it i havent been able to boot my pc. i plug everything in and hit the power button it immediately goes to a black screen with a blinking underscore cursor in the upper left corner about 1/4 of the way from the left side. all my fans work, the hard drive is running.

Vista (64 bit)
AMD Phenom x4 9100e 1.6GHz
ATI Radeon x1950 Pro

Power supply was from another pc i had that i didnt use anymore, same wattage just had the 6 pin PCIe connector i needed, the one currently in it is the stock one that came with the tower.

no clue what to do, F1, F2, ESC, DEL keys dont work to get to BIOS, the only responses i get are CTRL+ALT+DEL kind of restarts i think, my monitor goes to standby when i do it for a brief period of time but then fans kick on again and same black screen.

also when i hit the pause/break key it stops the beeping that is coming from the mobo. *note* if i hit the key during the beep then its continuous noise.

anyone have any advice?? any would be appreciated!!

*Edit - just to clarify, i get zero load up of anything, there is no loading screen prior to the black with blinking cursor, as soon as power is on it immediately goes to this screen.

*Edit - again i forgot to put that the 6 pin PCIe connector needed for the x1950 pro is non existant in the new PSU and i havent gotten an adaptor yet for it. dont know if that would be the reason i cant boot BIOS or windows. the original gr... Read more

Hey everyone I should let you know that I am not entirely sure this is a hardware issue but I'll ask here. Since I got my desktop made I keep getting a grey and black flashing screen after the windows loads to my login screen. I have gotten a replacement gpu as I expected this as the issue. I have tried multiple full factory resets, different monitors and cords to see if that was the issue but nothing works. I have uninstalled my gpu, monitor, and CPU, updated everything too(sorry this is so long). The only solution I have found is putting it to sleep and waking it up temporarily fixes it. The problem only occurs after i shut my computer down and and start it up for the first time. I have had this problem for over a year and i am desperate for any help would be greatly appreciated thank you.

Whenever the Windows loadscreen passes the screen goes black and I can move a cursor around the screen.
I have had this happen before and fixed it with bootrec.exe but I can't seem to get that to work this time...
Startup repair says it cannot help - Safe mode has the exact same black screen problem.
I have done chkdsk and sfc scannow - Didn't fix it.
When I boot into Kaspersky Rescue from a USB drive it mentions that I need to shut down windows properly before continuing. I would like to do this but I can't.
I have tried changing the active partition on information in some of these other threads - It didn't seem to work.
All disks are healthy according to the DISKPART and Partition Wizard. I have done the HP hardware diagnostic scans and everything comes up fine.

I see that a lot of the advice on the threads is to do a fresh install - Is it really broken beyond repair at this point?

Does anyone have any other ways I can try and fix this problem?

Okay, So I will lay this out as best as I can. Side note, This laptop was not my choice, it was given to me by my university to keep. [System Model] HP ZBook 17 G2
[Processor] Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-4710MQ CPU @ 2.50GHz, 2501 Mhz, 4 Core(s), 8 Logical Processor(s)
[BIOS Version/Date] Hewlett-Packard M70 Ver. 01.14, 1/26/2016
[SMBIOS] Version 2.7
[RAM] 16.0 GB
[iGPU] AMD Firepro M6100

[PSU] 350 Watt Generic Power SupplyTo make the best of it I wanted to use the graphics card I already own which is a GTX 970. So in order to do this I got an V8.0 EXP GDC external video card dock (Expresscard Version). The dock when used makes the computer act as if it has a 16x PCI slot. I will use short hand terms just to make this shorter but just to note the computer was always off before the card was inserted. I never tried to hot plug the card because it's dangerous to do so with the dock. The dock and GTX 970:this resulted in the computer acting like the card doesn't exist and booting as so. Kind of like a desktop computer with an old bios. So the card is NOT labeled anywhere in the system including Device Manager, msinfo32.exe and a few external programs. Desktop Computer and GTX 970:the card worked as expected and installed all drivers after a fresh install of Windows 10. The dock and GTX 260:the card worked as expected on boot up, windows detected the device and proceeded to install the drivers. The dock and GTX 970 on a different laptop (On availible videos): H... Hi,I have no idea what to do.My laptop has Windows Vista Home Basic preinstalled on it when I brought it.  I do not have an installation disc.Anyway, I removed a virus, and the program suggested for me to restart the computer to fully remove the virus.  When I did this however,my laptop restarts as usual, but goes to a black screen, white arrow.. just before its suppose to go to the log in screen.  Its not frozen,it seems to be running, and left long enough it goes into screen saver.  I don't know what to do after this.  Can anyone help me please??!?!  Is there a chance I lost all my files and programs on my laptop? I just built a new computer and I'm fairly certain all the components are compatible with each other, but I've never built a computer before.

All the components are brand new and anyway I built it, the first time I booted it; it ran my windows disc but it was scratched up so I went to clean it. Upon using the computer again, it kept saying 'BootMgr is missing, press ctrl-alt-delete to restart' - now this didn't change upon using or not using my windows disc and I could not enter bios screen.

I'm not using a usb keyboard - using one of those ones with the purple adapter.

Anyway I thought I may have plugged the sata cables into the hdd and optical drivers wrongly and have changed them about multiple times as well as removing the CMOS battery and tried clear the CMOS by touching the two pins.

All I get now is my screen flashes a quick image of the initial load screen and then straight to a black screen, everything in my PC seems to be running fine. Plus I've tried it with and without my graphics card and I get same issue.

What can I do?

Answer:New build - flashes load screen then black screen

Hi BC welcome to Techspot,

Firstly the "purple adapter" is a PS2 conenction.

There are many reasons as to why this error may occur and how to to sovle this issues but it sounds like you have tried to start a windows installaiton and becasue the disc was scratched it hasn't completed the it hence it comes up with the error "BootMgr mssing". The best solution here I think would be for you to get another Windows disc and try re-installing windows.

to get into the BIOS remove the windows disc from your PC and restart. when the PC is laoding up hit the F2 key and this should allow you to load the BIOS.
I wrote this thread if thsi is any help

hope this helps

I bought a new computer in September, Dell N5050. The first problem occurred in November, I made prntScr:
This problem is solved: I thought it's a virus, I downloaded Advanced SystemCare (I had McAfee) this scanned my computer and found a four Trojan.

Then came a new problem.
I turn on computer, starting windows, black screen with a cursor about 8-9 minutes, log on and welcome screen loading about 5 seconds.
I turn on computer, starting windows, black screen with a cursor about 1-2 minutes, log on and welcome screen loading about 6-7 minutes.

I really don't know, what it depends on.
What is problem? How I can fix it?

PS: my native language isn't English. Sorry for mistakes.
PS: I have Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit.

Answer:Welcome screen load time or black screen with a cursor

First thing I'd do is getting rid of Advanced System Care. It's a system optimizer, and Windows 7 does not like optimizers. I'd bet that it is responsible of the slow start.

Second, ASC isn't an antivirus, or if it is I never heard of it. Which isn't a good sign. Install a good antivirus and run a full scan, I like Avira (my favourite, which is free and nuked all evil things I threw at it), but other people like Microsoft Security Essentials (again free, but less powerful than Avira).

Hey everyone,

I’ve recently had this problem occur to a computer I am working on for a friend. I've moved my questioning to here after using combofix went disastrously wrong after being suggested to use it here.

Problem: I have a black screen (after windows load screen) that has an active mouse but with no capability of getting into the Windows Task Manager. I tried rebooting in VGA mode, all 3 safe modes with no luck

Here is a chain of events leading up to my problem

1) Cleaned up her hard drive because it was riddled with spy-ware and viruses (with Hijackthis, Ad aware, and house call)
2) Her computer was still having issues with a few spy ware programs, mainly Think-adz and the fact that her WHOLE desktop screen would invert 90 degrees to the left.
3) It was suggested that I run combo fix, follow the prompts and post a log for the person whom was helping me.
4) I installed and ran combo fix on the laptop, it never got past Step 1 (after waiting for 30+ minutes). I ran combo fix again and the same thing happened.
5) I rebooted the laptop and got a lsass.exe error.
6) I went into bootup with my XP CD and manually repaired lsass.exe with the friendly copy and rename commands
7) Currently I am here; I have a black screen (after windows load screen) that has an active mouse but with no capability of getting into the Windows Task Manager. I tried rebooting in VGA mode, all 3 safe modes with no luck

I fear that combo fix deleted A LOT more than I know. I really want... Read more

Hi and thanks to anybody kind enough to take time to help me. I read that for my gigabyte board to run 1866 ddr3 that I needed to start with an am3 processor first. The box said am3+ bios installed, so I figured I could install the ram with an am3+ processor. Now my ram is running at 1333. Am I looking at starting all over and setting the bios back to factory, uninstalling the am3+, installing an am3 cpu and then reversing it back to the am3+ cpu? It's a gigabyte 990fxa-ud5. I knew better and I tried to shortcut anyway. Could there possibly be a bios setting I'm missing? I really hope that's it. I'm going to try and install the two modules in the other two slots just on a prayer that it might fix this. Thanks again. I hope I haven't screwed up and made this board never recognize the ram speed properly.

I don't know how to fix it, I can run windows 7 in safe mode and safe mode with networking but when I try to load it in normal mode I get past the windows loading icon and then just before the login screen my pc screen goes black with only my cursor showing and the cursor is moveable. I have looked on other websites and tried a few things like updating my video drivers and changing a few things in the registary but nothing has changed, anyone give me any help?

Answer:Black screen on load up

UPDATE: I noticed an error message pop up just previous to the black screen which says

Checking file system on C:
The type of the file is NTFS,

One of your disks needs to be checked for consistancy, you may cancel the disk check, but it is strongly recommanded that you continue.
Disk check is cancelled

This message pops up for a brief second and automatically cancels itself, my pc did cut itself off because of a power failure just before I start getting this problem, what shall I do?

I got a new gigabyte board, because my old one fried. And a new processor. At first it was loading a tad slow, maybe 20 seconds of a black screen then it'd go on. Now it's taking about 3-4 minutes of a straight black screen and then it'll post ect..

I can't figure out what the problem is. Any ideas/suggestions?

Answer:Black screen then load?

Honestly, this is a crap thread.

I was hoping that you could explain more clearly about your system specification, and then explain your situation.

Also, you didn't even bother telling us how you attempted to fix this problem.

What happened:
One morning I woke up to realize my desktop is gone - nothing appears there but only My computer, My documents and recycle bin.
So I did "system restore".
After that, the computer restarted and wanted to run "check disk".
After the check disk was completed, the computer rebooted, but now - every time the computer finish loading windows - I get a black screen with nothing on it.
The black screen happens before I'm even asked to choose the computer user and enter its password.
What I tried;
1. Safe mode to install new video driver - safe mode doesn't work. I opened a new thread about this problem (since it's a problem I had for a long time).
2. Run check disk /r using recovery console - I got an error "The volume appears to contain one or more unrecoverable problems". Need to mention the hard disk is actually accessible (using Hiren).
3. Install the video driver using Hiren - After the installation extracts its files, I get an error generated by the setup file - "an unknown error has occurred"
I'm using XP Pro SP3, Ge-force 250GTS, Hitachi 1000GB HDD.
Any other info needed? If so, please tell me and let me know how to retrieve it from the computer.
Please help.
Thank you

The other day when I booted up my computer, it got as far as the Windows screen with the bar scrolling at the bottom, and then, when I should have gotten the welcome screen, my lcd monitor went black, with a no signal notice and went into standby. I could not get into Windows, even in safe mode. I did a full restore, and everything seemed to be going well, until I installed the ATi video drivers. The same problem started again, black screen, no signal at the Windows screen. Windows seems to be loading, I can hear the hard drive clicking and the Windows start up music is heard and finishes after the black screen.

Things I have tried to resolve this:

Did a full Windows restore.
Reloaded the video drivers, old and new, numerous times.
Tried the ram sticks one at a time, didn't find a problem with them.
Ran Memtest, no errors.
Took video card out and reseated. Replugged vid card power wire.
Took the audio card out and reseated.
All voltages seem to be okay in the bios, fans and hardware are running, so I think the power supply is okay.
No overclocking.
Don't see any problems in the Bios.
Cooling seems to be okay. No dust in heatsinks.
Windows loads okay in VGA mode.
I have .net installed.
I don't see any obvious burned spots on the video card or motherboard.
Done Google searches and found many with the same problem, but nobody seemed to have a fix. Accept buy nVidia.
Searched TechSpot.

AS the title says, I recently had a system restore last night after my windows 7 refuse to load. Having done so, it told me to click OK after the system restore to restart my laptop.

I complied and after the BIOS screen load, all i get was a black screen with this _ symbol and thats as far as it goes. Its like looking at a black picture with the symbol only. Anyone got any idea to solve this problem of mine please?

Answer:Black screen after BIOS load screen

If you have any USB devices other than keyboard and mouse, disconnect them, and do a hard shutdown by pressing the power switch down until your computer switches off.

Wait half a minute or so and try booting up again.

If that doesn't work, are you able to boot into Safe Mode?

Failing that you could try a repair install.

Firstly, this isn't my laptop. It's a low-quality laptop that was bought 3 years ago, so not in the best of shapes.

Apparently this has occured before, but when I try a normal startup it spends ages with the W7 logo and then progresses to a black screen with a white cursor. I can only assume that when it happened before after a couple of restarts it progressed, but I was asked to reinstall W7 and then after restarting after the updates this error occured. Then as an attempt to solve it I inserted a fresh HDD and installed windows, again, after updates the error occured. Now it won't even let me install windows again. It loads the files and then the W7 logo appears and to the black screen again. I then stuck the HDD's in as an external HDD to another laptop and it failed to read them, as though they'd been corrupt.

The computer is a Msi Cr610.

I'd appreciate any help. Also, I've attempted safe modes and last known good configuration. The end result is the same.

My desktop computer will not fully boot. It was working yesterday, but I'm unaware if anyone did anything that caused this (no one wants to admit to it either).

CPU: AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 5200+
Motherboard: ALiveNF7G-FullHD R3.0 ( link)
OS: Windows 7 Professional (32-bit)

(This is what I can see from the POST.)

When I power on the computer, Windows starts loading and then the screen goes black. I can see the POST and can access the BIOS. After the POST, I get a blurb that tells me to choose one of the following:
Launch Startup Repair (recommended)
Start Windows Normally
No matter which option I choose, the screen goes black after the loading screens. Sometimes I get crazy colours all over the screen. It isn't a monitor problem (I tried three different ones). It could be graphics related but I don't know how I could solve it without access to Windows. Can I do anything in the BIOS? The same thing happens when I go into the F8 menu and select each option, except Directory Services Restore Mode. For this option, I get a message from my monitor like "Video Input Out of Range."

Interestingly enough, when I reseated the RAM, I got to the welcome screen (the one with the loading circle) before it got distorted. Though, I'm not able to replicate it all the time.

The screen also goes black when I'm booting from my Windows 7 disc. The same thing happens when I try to boot from an Ubuntu disc.

Hopefully someone here can help me. I'll gladly pr... Read more

Just got a TC4200 tablet laptop and installed windows xp on it. Those of you familiar with the model know that it has no cd drive so I had to move the HDD to another laptop to do it so I know the install was good. However when putting the harddrive back in after the HP load screen but before it enters the xp load screen it goes to a black screen with a flashing white _ cursor similar to a dos command but with no text and I cannot type. I have no idea what the issue is nor how to solve it. Any suggestions?

As an extra note I tried the other laptops HDD and it gave the same results so that rules out the harddrive as an issue.

You're probably missing essential device drivers for your laptop's hardware (which would have been installed had you ran the setup on your system). Use an external optical drive enclosure or a flash drive to install XP with the HDD in your system.

Alternatively, if you can get into Safe Mode you might be able to provide the system with drivers manually. You could also probably get away a repair install of XP, but this too would facilitate an optical or flash drive.Click to expand...

trying this nowish just gotta download sdk so I can use a flash drive as I dont have a external cd drive.

Second I do wonder if this is the correct solution as it never gets to the XP load screen so it doesnt have a chance to realize its wrong. Although dont get me wrong I hope its the problem as its an easy fix...

I have a Dell XPS M1710, running Windows XP. I went to reboot the laptop today and while the initial Bios ( i think it's called that?) loaded up, the screen never got to the Windows loading page. It is just a black screen with no mouse. Cntrl alt delete doesn't work, I can't get into safe mode, it's just all black. I haven't downloaded anything new in the past 2 weeks, this just happened out of nowhere.

I tried doing a recovery console. I was able to boot up from my xp CD, and when I hit R and started to copy files, the process was stopped on a few occasions stating:

Setup cannot copy file: mountmgr.sys, modem.sys, ulib.dll, syssetup.dll, amdk7.sys, mf.sys, tcpmonui.dll, tunmp.sys, update.sys, agpcpq.sys, almin1541.sys, amdagp.sys

Each one was found at a different completion % of the recovery process.
I also did a Bios diagnostic check, and the memory and hardware seemed to be fine.

When I turned the computer on I saw the ME start up screen, but then the screen went black. I tried rebooting a few times, but I kept getting the same thing. I could boot into safe mode, but not normal mode. One time I just waited and the black screen went away and Windows loaded properly. I tried my backup 30GB drive and it worked. It had a few problems of it's own, so I reinstalled Windows ME on it and used the 120GB drive to hold data. I deleted all of the Windows and program files from the 120GB drive backed it up and thought I was good to go.

I'm not sure why the screen turns black, but it's done it on both the 30GB and the 120GB drive. When it happens I have to reboot into safe mode and run scandisk. Then when I reboot it works. I will also say that safe mode even shows the black screen for a few extra seconds before loading Windows. Thank you for any help.

Answer:Windows won't load and the screen goes black

sounds like it's taknig a long time to load a driver. I find that the NIC driver is often to blame. Try taking out your NIC (if you have one) and rebooting to test.

two drivers do not load at start up and causes windows not to load after updating Bios in raid system. The tdx.sys and serial.sys do not load. I just get a black screen in windows. The cursor can be moved for a short while then it freezes. I have done scannow and repair a dozen times with no results. I have also done chkdsk and all of these come back ok. it all started when I updated the bios while in windows. I rebuilt the SYM, system and other reg files which allowed it to boot to windows, but it hangs while loading. I have tried safemodes etc. I can get to a command prompt through the install disc and the c: drive shows all of the directories. Is the tdx.sys not loading the problem?

Hey, I just have one problem after recently noticed I had a keylogger I tried to quarantine with ad-aware but, it wasn't effective after trying to delete it via registry editor I knew I was in some need of software to get rid of it and so I bought Registry Mechanic this looked very good and rather efficient I scanned to find that I had 901 problems with my pc to do with the space etc. After getting rid of some of the problems it asked me to restart the computer and so I did, after the Windows XP loading screen the computer just goes black and nothing happens I even sat there and waited 5 minutes. I also no this has nothing to do with my monitor as I tested it with another pc. Furthermore, I tried to run safe mode but it doesn't seem to work and it crashes after lines of white writing come down the screen. I really need to sort this out and I cannot reboot my pc as I have valuable information etc to me on it. Please can someone help me!!!

I should write everything I know about the problem first. 2 days ago my PC started smelling like burning very faintly, I loaded a game up later that day and my PC made a loud noise. I immediately shut my PC down and waited for a bit. I loaded it up later and it was fine and the temperatures of my CPU and motherboard are fine. The next day I loaded up starcraft 2 and everything was fine until I actually started a match. When the match finished loading my screen went black, I could hear the sound in the background and after 2 minutes it came back. I shut the game down and didn't play another game that day. Today when I loaded another different game up my screen went black at the main menu and I had to turn my PC off by holding down the power button. I could not hear the game in the background this time but could hear what sounded like one sound looping constantly and very fast. I could ctrl alt delete out of the game this time though.

I have opened up my case and all the fans are working and there is no obvious problem. I removed any dust from inside the case and loaded my PC back up. I loaded up starcraft 2 again and this time I didn't even get to the main menu. As soon as the loading screen had finished my screen went orange for a few seconds and then turned black. Every few seconds the game would flash on the screen for less than a second but then it would turn black again. Every time I shut the game down through ctrl alt delete an error message appeared in my not... Read more

Boy, I am in a jam. I have a Dell Dimension 3000 with a pentium 4 processor that was running Windows XP. Made the mistake of fiddling around with it...added a 2nd hard drive and when I booted up the icons were huge and it would not allow me to change the resolution. Fooled with msconfig a little (forget what I did now) and when I turned on computer it shows the dell screen and the windows xp screen then just goes to a black screen. Nothing happens after that. Tried to boot up in safe mode and does the same thing. Thought I could repair by using the windows xp installation disk...hit R for repair but now it's asking for my admin password. There is no way I will remember it. Anyone have any ideas for how to fix this? I am stumped. Can not get past this black screen to a command prompt or anything!

Thanks so much for any suggestions...

Answer:windows will not load - black screen

If you don't know your admin password, I'm not sure there is much you can do.

If you have access to another computer, you could take out the main HDD and hook it up to the other computer to act as a slave drive so you can get any important files on there. Then hook it back up to the 'damaged' computer and completely wipe out the drive using DBAN and then reinstalling Windows.

Hi Everyone,
The computer is an prebuilt hp envy h8-1419 on Windows 8.
Last week I went to turn on the family computer and after the boot loading (where you see the HP logo with the loading circle underneath), a black screen appeared with a beep. I could move the mouse around and it seemed like basic functionality worked (I could turn on voice assistance) but I couldn't get it to load the desktop. CTRL-ALT-DEL didn't work either. I did see the power/hdd/cdrom lights on the tower working, but the hdd light was permanently on (not flashing) like it was stuck loading or something. I asked my parents, who last used the computer, if they did anything beforehand and they said nothing was out of the ordinary, but I suspect they may have did a forced shutdown from the power button.
Anyways I tried rebooting a bunch of times and at one point I did get to the desktop, but it was glitched where the taskbar was a faded colour, the windows button on it didn't work, none of the desktop icons opened, and the right side of the screen had a black bar. Unfortunately, I shutdown the computer before thinking of trying ctrl-alt-del and could never reach this glitched desktop again. I then tried to plug the desktop into another monitor and the same issue persisted so I doubt it was the graphics card.
Afterwards I ran HP's UEFI thing and did a start-up test: it failed at the "Hard Disk Short DST" test (it also gave me an error code that came up with nothing on Google). The HDD Smart, pci device, pr... Read more

Please know that status: 0xc0000225 means Windows cannot find the System Files used for booting. The causes may be the following things.

The System files are corrupt.
The disk File system has bad configuration.

3. Hardware fault.
After reading "Afterwards I ran HP's UEFI thing and did a start-up test: it failed at the "Hard Disk Short DST" test" this could indicate the hard drive has or is failing. Answer:Satellite L40 dosen't load - black screen

You should try to remove firstly the battery and to disconnect the AC adaptor for about 20-30min. after this short period of time connect the both part again and try to boot up the notebook.
Usually this should helps to start the notebook again.

Additionally a BIOS update should be done.
I have read that an BIOS update solves many strange issues and as far as I can remember the ?black screen? issue could be solved too.

So check it out and good luck

My daughter have a laptop that she was trying to connect her son Leapfrog to it. She it connected overnight. The next day the laptop wouldn't load up but just shows a black screen with blinking cursor. Someone told her that it might be a virus. When I turn laptop on I can hit the [ESC] and it will take me to the black screen "Startup Menu." It won't let me do anything else but go to the black screen with the cursor. I tried to reformat the laptop but can't seem to get pass the black screen.

Answer:Can't get laptop to load (black screen with cursor)

Hello sir,
Could you give us some more details such as the OS, the exact process/incident after which the problem arose, and all the activities on the laptop since the Leapfrog connection?

For one, it could be plain hardware failure.
Assuming you have Windows 7 installed, have you tried performing a Startup Repair using the Windows 7 disk?
Once you power on the laptop, keep pressing 'F8' till you reach the "Advanced Boot Menu". Select Safe Mode, and see if you can boot into Windows. If you can get to the desktop, perform a malware scan.

If it doesn't help, contact your vendor's or HP's customer support/technical assistance.

Hope this helps.
Regards, Marnomancer.

Answer:Satellite L300 has only a black screen and will not load.

You mean you are not able to access the BIOS?
Did you try to use the FN+F5 key combination in order to switch to the different display devices? Check this. Maybe the display output has been switched to external monitor ?:|

If nothing will help remove the battery and disconnect the notebook from AC.
Wait about 1h and then connect both parts again and try to power up the notebook.

Hi Tech Support Guy Forums~

Turned the computer on today and Windows will not load, gets as far as the black Windows XP page with the loading scroll bar. Nothing happens beyond that. Everything was working fine yesterday and nothing was downloaded or installed to indicate where to start looking. Tried installing 1GB RAM last month to no avail and took it out. Things have been okay since. Have read some posts that suggest using the Windows install CD to repair whatever but I didn't get one with the computer only have the Windows recovery disk. Specs listed below.

eMachines T3418 Desktop Windows XP
AMD Sempron Processor 3400+
2.01GHz 384MB RAM

CA Antivirus and spyware

Road Runner High Speed
FireFox Browser
Juno Browser
Internet Explorer (don't use this as it always has problems.)

Have run all virus, spy and malware scanners today and nothing was found by any of them. Any help, thoughts or ideas would be appreciated.

I installed the Windows 10 download last night and everything seemed to go smoothly...until the log-in screen came up.  I logged in with my password, hit enter -  got the "welcome" and it transitioned to a black screen with no icons, no background, no task bar.  The cursor is active and movable, left and right clicks do nothing.  The only thing that shows is my Comodo "Secure" notification box in the top right-hand corner.  I've attempted to (by shutdown and restarting) to get to a desktop without success.  I then tried a Safe Mode start by waiting for the log-in page, holding Shift, and using the power icon at the bottom of the log-in page to restart.  I was successful, at first.  Was able to do a reset, and re-install windows desktop came up and I thought all was good.  But when I restarted after downloading my Chrome browser (which had been removed during the reset/reinstall, the same thing happened - after log-in, no desktop, icons, etc.  I was going to do a Safe Mode again, but the log-in page now has only two icons at the bottom instead of three.  Originally, there was a "connect to the internet" icon; a 'ease of access" icon, and a "power" icon with choice of restart, shutdown, sleep.  Now there are only two icons...the connect & ease of icons.  So I can't even get into Safe Mode now.  I went to the microsoft support page....they have a 200 minute wait for call-backs and similar wait for... My desktop will load up to the windows logo and then go to a black screen. I believe it is a driver issue but I cannot get into windows to update them.
Things I have tried myself to resolve this issue.
- Use different VGA cable
- Use my onboard GPU to load into windows (problem persists)
- Load in through safe mode, on two different monitors (get message: input timing error)
Anybody ever deal with this? I can't seem to find any other options.

Answer:Load up to windows logo and then black screen

What hardware? Make make/model? what's the os?

Thanks, and welcome.

I am unable to load Windows Vista when I turn on my computer. Upon restarting, it will show the standard Microsoft Corporation loading bar, then it goes to a black screen. My OS is Windows Vista 32 bit Home Edition.

I tried running start up repair and after about 40 minutes, I received the following results:

Number of root causes = 1

Test performed

Check for updates (error code = 0x0)

system disk test (error code = 0x0)

Disk Failure diagnosis (error code = 0x0)

Disk metadata test (error code = 0x0)

Target OS test (error code = 0x0)

Volume Content Check (error code = 0x0)
Root Cause: system volume of disk is corrupt

Repair Action: file system repair (chkdsk)

Completed successfully (error code = 0x0)
After it restarted, Windows still failed to load and I get the black screen.

I tried a system restore on 2 previous points and both failed.

It stated unspecified error

I/O device error (0x8007045D)

I tried loading Windows in Safe Mode but that also failed.

It stalled when it got to windows\system32\drivers\crcdisk.sys

I don't know what to do or how to retrieve the data from the hard drive.

When I bought the computer, it did not include a system restore disc or Windows Vista. Also, I don't have a functioning DVDrom drive.

I would really appreciate any advice on how I might be able to load Windows Vista. In the event that Windows Vista does not load, is their a way for me to manually retrieve the files from the hard drive, like copying them to a ... Read more

I had a copy of windows xp home addition i think. I have a copy of Professional i was going to put on the computer. It was doing the normal load that i have seen window do before when loading on other computers. Then it came to a blue screen that said something to the affect of Windows startup is installing. It used to go to the loading screen then shut itself off and start again. I went to bios trying to figure out why it doesn't load. Now after the blue screen saying it is restarting setup it now goes to a black screen with a blinking cursor that i can move. I have gone to bios and made sure it boots from disk. I called windows and they said my disk was called an OEM and that is why I can't install it. I told them I bought it thru an online school I was attending so it should have been a retail version. I can't get to anyother screen but bios and the black screen. I wish I could tell you specs of my computer to help but i put it together using various parts from other people old comupters. The only think I can tell you is that before I did this it was speced for and ran World of Warcraft the Burning Crusade With no problems. Sorry I can't be anymore help, but i have searched the internet over and over and can't seem to find an way to fix it. I even wondered if i put a new hard drive in it would I be able to load it.

I have a HP a6683w running Windows Vista. When you turn the computer on it comes up with the HP screen but then goes to a black screen with a cursor blinking in the upper left corner. You can select F10 setup and get it to come up and also the ESC key works but the F11 (system recovery) will not do anything as well as F8 (safe mode) also will not do anything. Any ideas for a fix would be greatly appreciated.

Answer:Windows won't load -- black screen with cursor

The C drive may be corrupted or going bad. Try running CHKDSK by going to Computer and right-click on the C drive. Select Properties, tools, check now. Put a check in both boxes to set a disk check on the next start up. Any errors mean trouble

After installing COD : world at war I try to start the single player or multiplayer campaign and it goes to a black screen for 5 seconds and then back to my desktop.

If I try to run the game again it says that COD was not shut down properly and I should start it in safe mode....

It does not matter if I answer yes or no to this question, the same thing happens again .... black screen for 5 seconds and then back to my desktop.

I tried uninstalling and reinstalling ... same thing

I tried all of the things it says to try for fixing general crashes ... same problem.

I dont even get an error message, just pushed back out to the desktop.

I should also mention this is as far as I have gotten....never even got the game to run once...

My PC exceeds all of the requirements for this game as well...

Any Ideas?
