X201 problems after BIOS upgrade (keyboard light not working, laptop speakers not working)

Question: X201 problems after BIOS upgrade (keyboard light not working, laptop speakers not working)

Hi there, Bought new SSD, was not working, upgraded BIOS to newest 1.40 version. SSD working just fine. But now I noticed my keyboard light (fn + page up) is not working. Was fine before. Anyone else having this issue?Another issue: laptop speakers are not working. The line out (connected headphones) is working fine. My idea was to report this problem to lenovo tech staff but I wasn't able to find a way to do it online (only phone service). cheers. --Lenovo ThinkPad X201 3323-8TG

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello Infro!

Welcome to the Support Forums. I can imagine your frustration. I looked at the Driver Matrix for your X201 and it looks like there have been some other updates released recently. I am not sure of your operating system, so you may need to verify they are correct, but all are listed above in the driver matrix.

Check to see if you have the current version of these drivers:

Hotkey Features Integration
Lenovo Power Management for Windows 7 (32-bit, 64-bit), Vista (32-bit, 64-bit), XP (32-bit, 64-bit)
Also check for Power Manager Patches
Solid State Drive firmware update utility

Let me know if you have any questions and if everything is updated.

The Laptop originally came with Windows 8 & the keyboard light worked fine but since upgrading to Windows 10 the keyboard light stopped working. There is a small keyboard icon on the Z button but that does not do anything. This Laptop was never dropped or broken or anything like that the Keyboard Light just suddenly stopped working

Hi Thanks for you help and comments in advance! System information: OS: Windows 10Device: only the Standard PS/2 device is listed in the device manager which is stange because there use to be a HID also listed under keyboard Keyboard driver version number/date: 10.0.10586.0  (21/06/2006)  I have upgraded to windows 10 and since the doing so, I have encountered several problems (scanner not working, dimmed monitor-resolved, F7 Aiprlane mode button not working - resolved) and now the dreadded keyboard backlight is not working (it definitely worked before). The NumLock and CapsLock work fine and they do light up. I have tried the following:  Fn+Spacebar - does not work Bios upgrade-  does not work and no errors detected during scan in CMD (somone posted a string in another post to do this) Window updates driver updates - still does not work Installed latest Lenovo energy Management - Still does not work Question. Are the backlights for the NumLock and CapsLock on the same ribbon as the main backlight. Should the main back light work if the NumLock and CapsLock are working? Is it worth deleting keyboard from device manager - will it auto detect the keyboard, PnP detect (I can't afford to be without a keyboard Not sure what these device manage events log mean or if they help: Device ACPI\IDEA0102\4&1bc423ef&0 was migrated.Last Device Instance Id... Answer:Ideapad Z500 Keyboard back light - stopped working after Windows 10 upgrade

Update: I purchased a genuine second hand keyboard online fo £22.00 and the backlight is working perfectly. A good way to test the functionaility of your keyboard is to see if the light comes on during the boot-up. If it does not then it is either a loose connection or a faulty keyboard. It is worth opening up the keyboarg to see if there is a loose connection...see this video on how to do it, it very simple and will take you less than 5 minutes. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_lK4mKT_7gA If the connection are ok and you still do not see the back light working during the boot up, then I am afraid to say that you have a faulty keyboard. Don't waste you time like I did trying to get it to work...get a replacement!

I am having a problem with the internal speakers on the X201.  Basically, the speakers just stop working.  I could be in the middle of playing a song and the speakers pop and then go out.  I have to reboot the system for them to work again.  Headphones still work despite the fact they go out.   I am thinking this is a fault with the IO Assembly board, but am not sure..  I have reinstalled Win7 clean with updated drivers and still see the same problem. Another interesting thing is I keep getting the disconnect/connect sound ( like you are plugging in a usb device ) at random times.  That always seems to correlate to the windows AUDIODG process. Any ideas?

My Dell inspiron 3542 laptop speakers are not working, but 3.5 mm jack is working fine.
Please help me out.

Answer:My Dell inspiron 3542 laptop speakers are not working, but 3.5 mm jack is working fine.

Hello. The problem could be either in the hardware or the software, so you need to test each. Perform the tests below -- it doesn't matter which one you do first.

To test the speakers, perform the Quick Audio Check in the ePSA test. If the speakers fail the test then they have failed or become disconnected. (Click the link for instructions on how to run the test.)

To test the software, switch between the Realtek audio driver and the Windows native driver. [This test assumes that your laptop has the Realtek audio driver. If you get to step 2 and do not see "Realtek High Definition Audio" then go to the Dell support page for your model and download the Realtek driver that Dell provides for the version of Windows that the laptop is running.]
1. Open the Device Manager (find it in the Control Panel, or type devmgmt.msc into the search box).2. Expand the "Sound, video & game controllers" and right click on "Realtek High Definition Audio".3. Select to "Update Driver Software".4. Click on "Browse my computer for driver software".5. Click "Let me pick from a list of drivers on my computer".6. Put a check in the box "Show compatible hardware" if not already checked.7. In the list of devices, click "High Definition Audio" (the native driver).8. Click "Next".9. On the Update Driver Warning box, click "Yes" (install the driver). 10. Restart the laptop if prompted. If not prompted,... Read more

I have HP G60-530US.I read all the posts that talked about updating the BIOS and then doing a hard reset by taking the power cable out and talking out the battery out and then either hitting the power button for 1 minute or just leave the computer for several minutes. Many people seems to have solved their problems.  Not me.I updated the BIOS and also did the hard reset like 10 times.  What other options are there?I have Windows 7-64bit.  This problem occured after I did the 4/11/13 or 4/12/13 windows updates. The power button, wifi button and the mouse on/off buttons are the only ones that seems to be working.

Hi,

I have a dual boot of Fedora and Windows, and when I boot into Fedora, my headphones work fine. When I boot into Windows 7 64bit, my headphones don't work. My laptop speakers work fine however, and I tried re-installing drivers. I made sure that my headphones are the default playback device, and I only have one headphone jack.

Other people who had this issue solved it by replacing their audio jack, but for me that is not a problem because the audio jack works fine when I boot into Fedora.

Please help!

Janac

Answer:Laptop speakers working, but headphone jack not working only on Window

Normally, the "Speakers" (PC sound) is set as the Default Playback device and not Headphones. In fact, newer RealTek sound systems do not even show the Headphones when plugged in.

Are you using the correct sound drivers? Not the generic Windows installed High Definition Audio Codec.

What all is listed in the Device Manager, Sound section?

Hi there extremely smart people ...I'm hoping you can help me ...

My CD/DVD rom drive just mysteriously stopped working some time ago....but everything I read led me to believe it was a driver issue - so I assumed it would be fixed during a re-format (XP Home). This PC is only a year and a half old...the only thing I haven't tried is switching out the actual drive - but again....because it has power and is communicating I'm guessing it's working...but I'm not doing something I need to do...

I have used all the boot disks in the world but I can't make my CD work. The power works (the light goes on) and the BIOS recognizes it and gives it a drive letter - but CD's cannot be read. What am I missing?

It doesn't help that I can't figure out how to use/get the 6 floppy disk boot set. The executible file just opens a 16 bit file that will not allow me to bypass the error that it's not a suitable file for windows so I can save it to the diskettes...again...where am I missing the boat?

I suppose it's important to add that this particular PC with the CD problem was so riddled with some level of adware/spyware and possibly viruses - that it simply stopped working all together which is why I can no longer procrastinate it. (sickening ...I know...) . Also important to note that this PC was never taken apart - so I know it's not a cable in the wrong way or anything....because it was working before. I did however just open it a... Read more

Answer:CD is not working but light is on and BIOS recognizes...??? what should I do?

If you boot with an MS-DOS floppy with CD support, and you still can't access a data CD, you need to address hardware issues. http://www.allbootdisks.com/ has a number of boot disk images you can create the proper bootable floppy disk to test with.

I recently purchased a Pok3r keyboard, and now my USB microphone(AT2005USB) and my speakers (Bose Companion 5) refuse to work together. However, when I have my old keyboard plugged in, they work together just fine.

My microphone has a way to listen to yourself while you talk, so it also is registered on my computer as a speaker. When I have that speaker enabled, my microphone works fine. When I disable that as a speaker and set my Bose speakers to the default speakers, my microphone doesn't pick up any sound according to the computer. I'll put a little gif up of what happens.

As you can see, when only my speakers are enabled, my microphone doesn't pick up any sound. This ONLY happens with my new keyboard plugged in.

If I have just my keyboard and the microphone plugged in, even if I disable the Microphones "speakers" it still will pick up audio on the microphone. It's only when I plug in the speakers as well that it decides not to pick up any sound.

Does anyone know what could be causing this? None of the devices have device specific drivers; they are all just installed by windows.

EDIT: I figured out that my keyboard works fine with everything when I plug it into the front USB ports on my computer, but it doesn't work on any of the back ports. I don't know what I should be doing to solve this problem.

Could this be a power issue? It always seems like one thing has to stop working for another thing to work. Maybe my new keyboard draws more power than my old on... Read more

Hey im faced with a frustrating issue. My computer is infected with a search redirect virus and nothing seems to be able to get rid of it. To add to the problem, my keyboard only works in safe mode, not in regular mode. When I check the hardware stuff in the control panel is says something about "error 38" for the keyboard. My sound does not work either.

Ive scanned with malwarebytes, avast antivirus, and iobit security. They have all found and deleted a number of malware/viruses, but the issue keeps reoccuring and the malware returns even after those programs have deleted them. Even after scanning and deleting the malware, the computer still has the same problems. Ive also tried to do a system restore which worked to no avail. The issue has been going on for about a week now.

Hopefully you guys can help me out! Thanks in advance!

Hello, I bought this laptop about 4 months ago. After a while the trackpoint started to have problems when the surface underneath the laptop was uneven, so I sent the laptop for repair in US and I believe they changed the motherboard. A week or so after I got the laptop back the issue happened again, but it didn't happen as often and I was about to leave for Moscow so I forgot about it. Fast forward two happy months of use, last week for no apparent reason the trackpoint AND touchpad stopped working (previously the touchpad worked). I've tried reinstalling drivers and all sorts of software tricks (including looking into bios and updating it). I have two questions:1. Weirdly enough, there isn't a single option in bios about touchpad, trackpoint, or UltraNav, which makes me think the bios doesn't even see the hardware! Can someone with a working UltraNav on yoga 12 check their bios under keyboard/mouse and let me know? 2. Has anybody sent laptops for repair in Moscow? Is the quality and duration of service reasonable? Do they have depots here or only certified service providers? If need be, can they change the motherboard or would they have to send the laptop abroad? I'd rather not stay without a laptop for a month! 3. Has anybody had recurring problems like this? I've had thinkpads before and they've lasted me years without a single problem. I'm beginning to think there are design problems at least with this model. What are my options? I have plenty of... Answer:Yoga 12 (2nd gen) UltraNav, fan, and keyboard light stopped working in Russia

Hi

Just in case, what I will do first is to do some trial and error and try to reinstall the trackpoint/ultranav driver from the support site:
http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/products/laptops-and-netbooks/thinkpad-yoga-series-laptops/thinkpad-...

Maybe something that you can do in some trial and error and to boot with a Linux USB stick and see how the UltraNav/Trackpoint works with it.

But, there is also a post from Lenovo here:
https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-S-Series-ThinkPad-Yoga/TP-Yoga-12-Synaptics-Pointing-Device-no...

It says:
"Due to customer reports that the touchpad and trackpoint on Yoga 12 laptops randomly stop working, a solution has been put in place.

If you are experiencing this issue and your ThinkPad Yoga 12 was manufactured prior to October 2015, please contact Lenovo Service for Support and reference Service TIP #SF15-T0095/ HT116650. The fix requires the laptop be serviced.

Thank you,"

Maybe you apply for those who have some hardware issues with this model.

I have an x201 i7-620 with 8GB RAM, 160GB SDD, Windows 7 64 bit. My bluetooth works for about 30 minutes, then stops working for about 10, then comes back, then goes, etc etc. So I keep having to switch keyboards and stop using my mouse. Also, my wifi device (Advanced-N 6250 AGN) was suddenly no longer detected today. Fn+F5 only shows bluetooth now (it used to show bluetooth, wifi and WAN (3G)). All three lights are switched on on the laptop itself. Why would this happen? Any suggestions? This laptop also had the random contrast issue, which seems to have been fixed by updated drivers. It also has that annoying faint buzzing sound coming from the top left part of the keyboard. It also random freezes every couple of days, requiring a cold boot. Thinkpads used to be the top of the range in terms of build quality and reliability. This is simply not good enough. I don't think I will ever buy Lenovo again. Oh, look, Bluetooth is back. What do you know.

Hi, hope I'm posting in the right place.

I had a set of GE 2.1 speakers working well with my Sony Vaio for about a year. Recently the sound started to go in & out, I had to move the wire around a lot and tape it or hold it in a certain spot to get them to work. Then one day they stopped working altogether. Assuming it was the speakers, I went and bought a new set from Best Buy. Took them home, plugged them in... and nothing, nothing at all. So I tried the OLD speakers in another desktop computer, and they worked perfectly.

So I assumed my headphone jack was broken and was going to go about trying to get a new piece and solder it and all that, but then I'm sitting here and just realized my headphones work perfectly.

What's wrong? How come the headphones work, but 2 pairs of external speakers don't?

Thanks so much

Jillian

After (1st) upgrading my T510 (43147NU) to Windows 10, (2nd) I was was on an open signal and incurred a viscous malware attack, but thoroughly cleaned the drive.  (3rd) The connector on the MoBo which ties in the keyboard bezel had become useless and I bought a used MoBo (4314DEU -  bigger heatsink, slightly better CPU).  I now have some issues such as the fingerprint reader doesn't work (doesn't show in the control panel and the software to register the fingerprints states "Can?t communicate with the sensor. Please confirm sensor is ready? and no green light on the reader.   Also, Trackpoint no longer functions and the keyboard light at the top of the cover no longer lights. So, my dilema is 1) do I have files damaged by the plethora of viruses I ?had? or issues from the upgrade to Windows 10, or is it something related to the board. I have some limited testing ability for the MoBo and so far it passes everything.  I would really appreciate some thoughtful help and direction as to how to troubleshoot these issues toward a resolution of them. Thanks, Rick

And I could use some expert advice - or even intelligent guesses as to whether certain LCD panels will work in the x201 laptop. The usual advice to upgrade a x201 laptop display is to go with a Hydis AFFS (similar to IPS) display e.g. the HV121WX4-120. Or alternately a Samsung PVA display e.g. the LTN121AP02-001. These are CFFL panels, so given my LED laptop, I'd also need an inverter (42W8009 or 42W8010) and CFFL variant cable e.g. 44C9909.  Okay great. But for various reasons I'd very much prefer to retain the WLED backlight, rather than change to a CFFL display. There are any number of forum posts saying that this isn't possible. But that appears to be refuted by some well documented threads that describe successful retrofits of better spec LED backlit panels in their x201 laptops e.g. using a Samsung LTN121AT07-L02 (27R2451) WLED LCD. With that thought in mind, I'm trying to discern whether a x201 tablet screen will work in my x201 laptop? e.g. a Samsung LTN121AP0310 or Toshiba LTD121KX6B-110 LCD. These are multitouch LCDs. I'm not counting on the multitouch to be operational. Just whether the LCD screen will work in a conventional manner in the laptop. Has anyone heard of these panels being retrofitted into a x201 laptop? Or spot any obvious impediments to using them in the laptop?    --Stock (original) x201 laptop LCD: Au Optroni... Read more

Have you performed the transplant before? If so, whats the secret to getting the LCD bezel back on properly? Lenovo's contracted on site "technician" botched it twice for me. Any pointers I can relay to them when they try again? Am tired of incompetent novices working on my hardware.

Greeting all... This afternoon one of the folks in my IT department did me a favor and installed a new battery in my IdeaPad P500 Touch.  Everything seems to be working well with sole exception that my backlit keyboard is no longer backlit, nor does it respond when I use Funtion+Spacebar. Is there another way to toggle turn the keyboard light on and off other than Function+Spacebar?  Does anyone know how I can fix it? Thanks!

Hiya Ladies and Gents,

I got to hand a Dell Inspirion One 19T that has been upgraded from Win 8 to win 10.  The speakers have a nice big red cross through them and keep saying that there's no issue and to plug in speakers or headphones.
What I have done so far...
Updated Audio device drivers
Updated Reltek HD codec and general drivers
Checked in BIOS to make sure the on board audio device is enabled
Windows updates
Uninstalled the driver and restarted
Uninstalled the driver and installed from fresh download
Sacrificed a top end calculator to the God of electronics

The last two things I can think of being the issue are...
a) Audio card knackered
b) Restore to win 8 and then NOT doing the update

Any suggestions other than those????

Just bought a new E470, checked the laptop and all was working well, including the speakers. I then replaced its original SATA3 HDD with an SSD, reinstalled Win10 Home and discovered the speakers no longer work. I've tried:1) testing the headphones, they still work.2) changing the bitrate to various frequencies. No joy.3) re-installing manufacturer driver. No joy.4) uninstalling manufacturer driver. Use Windows hi-def audio driver. No joy5) unjamming the headphone jack sensor with a toothpick in case it thinks the headphones are still plugged in. No joy6) enabling playback device to the speakers. No joy7) using the Lenovo Diagnostics Solution. No hardware issues found.I'm worried that I may have affected the motherboard circuitry that connects the speakers during the HDD upgrade. What I haven't done is looked for the motherboard specs and see whether the working area may have impacted any circuitry for the speakers. Does anybody know?

I figure you probably have it working by now?  I have read of cases where the sound driver must be installed "manually" to get it working.  Download the correct sound driver.  Then:Right Click MY COMPUTERChoose PropertiesClick HARDWARE tabClick DEVICE MANAGER tabChoose Sound, video and game controllersRight click the device in questionChoose Update DriverThe wizard will ask you, "Can windows connect to Windows Update to search for software?"Click NoClick NextIt will ask "What do you want the wizard to do?"Click "Install from a list or specific location"Click "Next"Click the check box "Include this location in the search"Click browse and browse to the location of the driver (in this explanation it was C:\Audio Driver".Complete the wizard and you have manually installed the driver. Note you may have to uninstall the original driver first.

Can i get update file for BIOS(traditional updating from boot CD, not OS!)

Sorry for my bad English.

Answer:Satellite L20 keyboard & touchpad not working but keyboard work in BIOS

If the traditional BIOS update is not available on the download page the only way to get it is to contact nearest authorized service provider. They have all versions.

But this keyboard and mouse issue is really strange. can you use it if you start operating system in ?safe mode??

Hey there,

took apart the girlfriend's HP in hopes of replacing the fan, but now that things are back together, the HD light isn't working (although the HD does spin when turned on). Also, the laptop screen remains blank on startup, and when I connect an external monitor, the screen remains blank, although it does appear to receive a signal, because the tri-color 'no monitor signal' screen goes off.

There is a ribbon that, when toggled, blinks the I/O light and the Power/Battery light. The HD light is between these and I am assuming it is on the same little ribbon. The ribbon appears worn at a place, so this may explain the light problem.

Still doesn't explain the monitor problem. Anyone know how I could troubleshoot this?

Any help will do. Even vague help. =)

I recently reloaded windows and started with a fresh laptop. However now the sound isn't working. At first the output to desktop speakers was working and the laptop speakers weren't. Now nothing is working. I have tried updating the driver from the manufacturer's site, and that has not solved the problem. Here's what I'm running:

I have an Alienware area 51 laptop with a P4 3.0, Win XP, ATI Radeon 9800, 1 gig RAM, and a C-Media AC97 sound card.

Any advice is welcome!

Answer:Laptop Speakers not working!

if they were working before then it is the drivers. make sure that you installed the sound drivers too. look for AC97 drivers.

Hello. I've searched and seen other people with this same issue, but I haven't yet found a solution to the problem.

I'm using a Dell Inspiron E1505 Laptop running WinXP Media Center Edition and using SigmaTel audio.

My issue is that the computer always thinks there are headphones plugged in; I suspect this is caused by minor internal damage to the jack itself.

Is there a way to disable the headphone jack so the sound will go to the speakers? I know the jack is a physical switch, not a software one, but I'm hoping there is a driver or hardware device I can turn off/disable so the computer "forgets" it has a headphone jack, or some other indirect solution.

Thanks!

Answer:Laptop speakers not working

It will need to be repaired. The speaker goes through the jack first.

Hi Haaz123,

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

The Audio driver is the one to control the Switch between default Playback device.
Have you tried reinstalling the driver?
Conexant Audio Driver for Windows 8.1 (64-bit) - Lenovo Z40-70, Z50-70

Once installing the driver
Look for Smart Audio HD in your computer and run it.
(Press WIndows key + W  to search.. make sure to select everywhere) type in Smart Audio
Run it and make sure that the Smart Audio is set to Classical.

Hope this helps
Cheers!

how do i check for the source of the problem and fix the speakers on laptop?

Answer:the speakers in my hp laptop not working, how

You have two speaker controls on HP laptop i believe, the Windows speaker icon in the system tray and the HP controls. Make sure that both are not muted and the volumes are set high enough to be heard. You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.

Hello, I really hope you can help me. I have a Dell Inspirion...something laptop. Its only about 7 weeks old. two weeks ago, it had its hard drive replaced, but when I got it back the speakers would not play any sound. When I plugged my headphones in I could hear sound.

I've tried updating the drivers, and nothing. I went through every step in the "windows help" thing. And they still won't work. Is there a way to fix this without having to give my laptop back to Micro Center(store I bought it from) and having it sit in the back for 4 days before even looked at?

Okay so just to give you an idea of what happened was one day my HP ENVY m6-p113dx was on the bed and I was watching Netflix and it randomly shut down and wouldn't turn on for about 5 minutes after it did, so I assumed it overheated which never happened before. Anyways after I rebooted everything was working just fine except the on board speakers, the headphone jack and hdmi worked fine for sound and when I play music or watch videos without the headphones in it says the on board speakers are playing sound but you can't hear a thing.

I've tried the following to try to fix the problem:
1. Uninstalled all sound drivers and reinstalled them.
2. Tried to update the sound driver.
3. System restore to before the overheat occurred.
4. Uninstall windows and reinstalled.
5. Opened up the laptop to see if any wiring for the speakers had been damaged or had come loose and if it was connected properly.

I figured it was some kind of hardware problem with the speakers themselves.

My question being should I buy the replacement speakers from a parts website or is there very likely wrong with the circuitry of the motherboard that a replacement part wont fix? And is there anything I can currently do to fix the problem that I haven't done before?

Thanks in advance.

I have a Dell 7737 laptop and from time to time it develops a firmware glitch where random keys stop working for both BIOS Setup and Operating Systems. After such thing happens neither shutdown (Full shutdown / Fast Boot disabled) nor restart get the keyboard back to a normal state. At this point the only workarround is to disconnect the AC power cord and then either drain the battery or physically remove it.
This laptop's battery cover is not designed for daily removal and it is starting to get loose because of this BIOS bug.
I am running BIOS version A14 but this bug was present since I purchased the laptop with BIOS version A07. Sometimes I cannot even type my password because the random keys that stop working match those it uses.
Please Dell could you provide a BIOS hotfix for this annoying issue?

This is my first time posting so I hope I'm doing this right. Anyway, the last time my speakers were functioning properly I was watching a movie when my battery ran out. I quickly plugged in the AC adapter and booted my computer up again and that's when the speakers stopped working.

Strangely enough the sound works if I plug in my headphones. I've made sure the speakers aren't muted and all that other stuff so what could the problem be? I believe I have a Realtek sound card and the drivers are up to date last I checked. I'd greatly appreciate any help.

My brother gave me the (2 speaker) set of ViewSonic computer speakers he no longer uses but it seems ridiculously difficult to get them working properly with my laptop. I've got an Acer Aspire model and I'm running Windows Vista. Nothing is muted, it's plugged in correctly, and it's not that they don't work at all, but that my computer only allows the options of Stereo or 5.1 Surround. This is obviously a problem because I have only the side speakers, not a full entertainment system set. (why would you have all that for a laptop anyway??)

I am able to deselect rear speakers and sub, but it automatically has the main pair selected on the 'test sounds' diagram. It seems that my computer reads the speakers I plugged in as the side speakers and is therefore still trying to direct some sound exclusively to the non-existent 'main pair', therefore distorting the sound and typically making any voices in the music almost entirely muted.

I've tried powering off and on the speakers, unplugging and plugging in, restarting my computer many times, poking at the settings both through the sound icon next to the clock (or through control panel) and the stupid 'Acer eAudio' menu..

What is particularly frustrating is that after poking around for an hour or two several days ago I managed to somehow get it working right - so I KNOW it's possible. However, I was stupid and took my laptop to another room yesterday and since then ha... Read more

Hi everyone,

I recently was given a Toshiba Satellite by my father-in-law. The screen stopped working and he said that if i could fix it, i could have it. After replacing the CCFL tube and getting it to work, i started to mess around w/ it and noticed that the speakers will work, and i can hear music and sound, but it is barely audible. Of course i tried to manipulate the sound through the control panel application as well as media player or anything like that. The sound would increase and decrease and i altered the setting but, as i stated before, the highest it will go, with the bar at its max, is still barely audible. The Toshiba's model number is 5105-S607. It has a Pentium 4 1.7 GHz processor with 512 ram. It is running XP home ed. with sp 2(which i had to install once i got the monitor working), and it has a Yamaha ac-xg wdm audio device with harman/kardon speakers. I don't know if you tried this step yet but I like to suggest pressing the 'Power On' button for 15 seconds to release Static Flea Power by following steps below:
1. Power off system, removed all peripherals, AC adapter and then battery.
2. Press the 'Power On' button for 15 seconds. Replace the battery, adapter and then power on system. Hopefully computer starts normally.
If that step doesn't fix the problem, I suggest you run the diagnostic tool (F12 key) to check hardware on system. Please power on system, quickly start tapping the F12 key continuously. In the menu, stroll down to Diagnostic and click on it. Report back any error code.

Hi, today I changed some settings in the bios of my Lenovo X1 Carbon (updated recently to the latest version): I had to disable UEFI mode in order to boot from an external usb. I thought I restored the setting as they were at the beginning but now when I enter bios pressing F1 at startup, the cursor keys of my keyboard are not responding! They work just fine under win 8.1.I am not sure, maybe this problem is related to the Legacy support? How can I re-enable it, if that is the cause of this problem? thank you

Answer:Keyboard not working even when trying to go to BIOS

Hi Sandeep,
Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!
I?m sorry to hear that a few keys in the keypad of your Lenovo ThinkPad R60 is not working properly.

Check if the keys are working in different applications. Some keys such as the function keys F1 through F12 will not work with every program. An easy way to test this is to open notepad or other word processing program and trying the key. Try getting into safe mode and see if the keys work. Remove the key from the keyboard and clean it. In some situations dirt, hair, dust, etc. can obstruct keys causing them not to work.

Please try to get into BIOS mode and see if the keyboard is working there. Tap F1 key while system shows the Lenovo logo to get into BIOS.

1. If you are able to use the keyboard in BIOS, it could be a software issue. I would recommend in that case to do a System Restore which will revert the settings in your system to a previous time.
2. If keyboard doesn?t respond in BIOS as well, I strongly suggest you to contact our technical support for assistance.

Best Regards,

Answer:Keyboard Not working In Bios

Sounds like your BIOS does not support a USB keyboard. Get a PS/2 keyboard, and maybe check to see if there is a BIOS update for you.

I was recently stupid enough to buy an intel motherboard. Apparently it has a fast boot option that it defaults to meaning usb mice and keyboards don't work before windows boots up, hence you can't access bios to turn it of.

Resetting the bios jumper from 1,2 to 2,3 makes the machine boot straight into bios, but off course the keyboard still dosen't work in bios. The board does not have a ps2 connector, how do I get a usb keyboard to work in bios so I can turn off fast boot and have my usb peripherals work so I can modify bios and have my two new hard drives work.

The motherboard is an intel DQ35JOE

Answer:Keyboard not working in bios

By default, those options are DISABLED.

In any case, read here: http://www.intel.com/support/motherboards/desktop/sb/CS-032034.htm

I have a C855. I thought at first my charger had stopped working as the light on the front of the laptop (next to the power light and wireless light wasn't lit up when it was plugged in. After a few minutes I realised that when I disconnected the power cable from the laptop, my screen went dim, so it was working.
But plugged in, its not got a white light that showed it was charged. I let the battery run down a bit then replugged it in and then it did go orange. And said x amount of time before fully charged (windows 10) it got to 1 minute then changed to 99%, plugged in charging and the battery light is still orange. It didn't alter no matter how long I left it plugged in after.
Is it a laptop fault or possible battery fault?

I have been having trouble with my sound and audio the last few days.
I have a 5.1 sound system plugged into the onboard sound of the motherboard. Suddenly out of the blue I lost bass from the sub-woofer. I re-installed Realtek drivers and the problem went away but then came back.
Sound on some games has no bass, some games have no sound at all. Playing music sometimes give me bass, some games start with bass then loose it and vice versa.
Up until this my audio and sound has worked without problems for years so this is something that has recently happened.
I pulled the cable out slightly of the back of the sub and the bass started working again so I assumed it was a hardware problem. I tried different cables and it didn?t solve the problem. Then the centre speaker stopped producing sound.
I bought a new 5.1 system thinking that my old one was dying but I still had the same problem even with the new system. Again the bass on the sub was intermittent and the centre speaker was also not working correctly, the sound was very quiet, distorted and broken.
I thought there may be a problem with the on board sound so I decided to buy a dedicated sound card and got the Creative Sound Blaster Zx. After setting everything up and plugin in the new 5.1 system I was shocked to find the problem was still there.
Thinking the new 5.1 system I bought was faulty I went and bought yet another 5.1 system, and to my surprise, I still have the problem.

Hi. One moment all was fine - next, no sound... Can anyone please help?

My small external speakers connect via a USB port and an audio jack plugged into the speakers/headphone socket (both needed - I guess the USB connection is just to power them?). After months of no problems, when I connect the jack, there is no sound. The laptop's internal speakers are pathetic, but still work OK when I unplug the speakers again.

If I try the external speakers on a different (Dell) laptop, they work just fine. If I plug headphones into the Asus laptop speakers/headphones jack, the headphones work OK too.

So I am now just confused! My Asus laptop is suddenly OK with the headphones, but not the speakers?? There were no drivers to install by the way for the speakers to work. No problems show in Device Manager and all volume settings are at Max right now...

The laptop has Realtek HD Audio installed (and I run Windows 7 x64). Microsoft 'Fixit' (as recommended elsewhere here) found nothing wrong.

Help appreciated.

Thanks,

Martin

Answer:External USB Speakers suddenly not working on my Asus laptop

Sounds like a USB port power problem in the laptop. The laptop's sound works OK and the speakers work OK on a different PC.

As they are USB powered, have you tried a different USB Port? Is there any other USB devices also connected to the PC?

Hi i have a Dell inspiron 9400, for some time now my sound has not worked from my speakers on the laptop, but when i plug in headphones i can hear through them so i dont think it is the soundcard. I noticed when I put the headphone jack into the microphone slot and pushed up towards the screen the sound would come out of the speakers. I opened up the laptop to see if there were any visible signs of a loose conection but could not see one. Do you have any suggestions or ideas on this? I tried cleaning the area and checked all visible connections. kind regards, Danny Causer

Hi,

I have an Hp625 running Windows 7 Basic 32 bit - I can play music through my laptops built in speakers without any problems, but when I plug headphones (or external computer speakers) into the headphone jack no sound comes through them (and simultaneously the laptop speakers go mute). My computer is dual boot with ubuntu, and this problem appeared when I upgraded my Ubuntu version - still, I know that the jack works as it is working fine in Ubuntu, and Im sure the problem is fixable within windows!

I have tried for HOURS to fix this problem, and attempted everything obvious, plus read many threads on similar topics. Please help. My computer is using the IDT audio control panel, and according to windows everything us up to date and fine. BUT ITS NOT PLEASE HELP.

Best
Ryan

Are you experiencing the problem in windows or in ubuntu? Have you installed the sound driver for ubuntu when you upgraded your version of ubuntu. Have you updated the sound driver for windows?

Hello all, If anybody can help, I would greatly appreciate it.
As the forum title states. Sound card sings but speakers do not.
Here is the additional Info that may help you, to help me

Motherboard Name Asus G1000Sn Series Notebook
CPU Type Mobile DualCore Intel Core 2 Duo T7500, 1200 MHz (6 x 200)
DDR2 CPU Type Mobile DualCore Intel Core 2 Duo T7500, 1200 MHz (6 x 200)
OS Name Microsoft Windows Vista Ultimate
Video Adapter nVIDIA GeForce 9500M GS (Asus)
Realtek ALC888/1200 @ Intel 82801HBM ICH8M - HD Audio Controller PCI
Hitachi 7.2k RPM 200GB Disk

Drivers are as up to date as they can possibly get. Audio drivers are 2010 drivers.
Earphones in sound works.
EX speakers plugged in via 3.5mm jack, They will work perfectly.

Second Hard Disk, (The original 120GB that came with laptop, Vista home image)
When this is plugged in the laptop speakers work perfectly.

So my understanding is the sound card and the speakers are functional.
Normal settings checked, not muted, hardware and software for speakers is not disabled.

Device manager has no conflicts (no red or yellows showing)

When i first addressed this issue with asus, laptop got sent back, the loaded the std image, works fine, tried to load xp, got it working but due to the lack of g1s xp drivers. it was impossible to continue using xp unless i wrote the drivers my self. This i did not know how to do so i loaded Vista ultimate.

The xp limitation is due to Santa Rosa chips in case anybody is won... Read more

Hi I recently bought a 2nd hand (4week old) acer e1 571. It originally had Win 8 installed, It is now running on Win 7 sp1 (afaik) with all the latest updates installed. This is why it has not just been brought back to the shop where it was purchased.
My problem is that I cannot play audio through the laptops own speakers. When in a very quiet room you can hear faint crackling from the speakers when they are turned up fully. If you plug in headphones or hdmi, the either will work perfectly no problem with sound. I have the latest Realtek audio driver for my computer installed and I have spent the last week checking and re checking all of the sound settings. The computer says that the device is ''working properly'' when I troubleshoot it. Im beginning to wonder are the speakers shot?

Answer:New laptop, speakers not working with latest drivers installed?

Maybe that was why it was originally brought back - the speakers didn't work? Did they work when you first got it? If not, I would take it back.

Answer:Dell Laptop Vostro A860 speakers not working

Hi:

It could be that the speakers died on such an old device?

Since this is a DELL, have you tried the built-in, pre-boot hardware diagnostics?
Provides means to test all the hardware.

Tap F12* during a cold start to bring it up > follow the screen steps.
Just a thought...

*That is the usual key on a Dell. I don't know about your specific model.

Ive had my HP folio 13 Ultra book for a while now. I'm running on Windows 7 Home premium (64)
But a few days ago I found out the sund was not working. And for some reason the sound is working perfectly on my beats headphones
I have 2 Sound devices: IDT High Def CODEC (speakers and Headphones) and Communications headphones (IDT high def CODEC)
For Example: When you press the sound icon and you test the sound the green sound bar comes up but nothing comes out of the speakers.
Ive done the following: Trouble shooted, it found nothing , the sound is defiately on and ive tried updating the drive but its the latest. I really do not know why it is playing up.
Alright whats weird is it says it is working properly in the advanced settings?????!!!
Also when i play a song on itunes the green bar will go up and down like usual but the sound does not come out of the damn speakers. To make it more weird when I enable the Communications headphones and test them the sound comes out of the speakers and cuts out (since it is a test).i've phoned a friend of mine and he said that maybe the sound is stuck or locked on the headphones. He also thought that maybe the computer is computer is mixed up or confused with which audio device is what.
I have some pics in the microsoft word attachment
All help ppreciated!

Hi,

I've recently purchased a Samsung T23A750 monitor and to my disappointment when I try to watch a movie the built in speakers are not functioning. I have a Sony Vaio Z216GX connected via HDMI to the monitor (HDMI-DVI) port. I can definitely see the video, but no audio is playing from the speakers. The built in speakers are not at fault- I did a self-diagnosis of the monitor and the speakers seem to work fine. I also set the monitor as the default for the audio and even when Win 7 says its functioning properly, the speakers still don't work. Conversely, setting the default to my PC speakers work fine. I'm sure its not the HDMI cable- I used the same one to hook my pc to my tv with everything working fine. Any ideas??

Answer:Monitor Speakers not working when connected via HDMI to laptop

make sure you have the latest drivers for the hdmi can check by going to the windows start bar and right clicking on computer and choosing manage then click device manger and open the tab were it says sound, video and game controllers if you see somthing related to hdmi and has a yellow triangle then right click on it and update software if no yellow triangle is there try it anyways if that doesn't help then post here again, hopefully someone who knows more about hdmi can help also because i never had hdmi but ive had audio problems with my speakers before and this is how ive fixed it before
