I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Thinkpad X230 Windows 7-64: problems with screen after updates

Hi Isosik,

Welcome to Lenovo Community!

As per the query we understood that you are facing issue with display resolution on your ThinkPad X230.

If you have updated the drivers from Windows update, sometimes this kind of issue occurs with windows generic drivers because of incompatibility of driver, suggest always update the drivers only through ThinkVantage system update utility. Update only Microsoft application from Windows update.

You can also download the drivers manually from the Lenovo support site.

Lenovo support site.

Hope this helps.

I have just completed a clean install of Windows 7 Ultimate and all went well except for the screen brightness issue. Anyone have any ideas where I can simply increase this as I have searched everywhere for screen brightness, even BIOS for any setting for display. I have latest update to display driver. I have two other laptops and each shows much brighter than this one and I am surely disappointed in this display. Not sure if it is because this screen is touch enabled and also works off keyboard that could be the issue and a separate setting could be involved on the touch side of the display as it does work with a stylus pen or touch also. thanks and   I hope I can get this brightness to increase somewhat as it is too hazy for me.

I have an issue that is plaguing my ThinkPad X230 Tablet. I cannot afford to be without it for a week to send it into the depot and am not sure they will be able to replicate the issue even if I do. Two things are happening. Tablet is placed in the docking station. If I turn it on, it will lock up at the ThinkPad screen and never fully load Windows (Win 7 64-bit). If I take it out of the docking station, hard crash it, and then restart, it will start right up. I then wait for the Windows home screen and place back in the docking station. When I do this, TSM Resident immediately quits. This is recurrent.  The error message is: TSMResident has stopped working Problem signature:  Problem Event Name: APPCRASH  Application Name:         TSMResident.exe  Application Version:     6.32.0.0  Application Timestamp:              4f2235b0  Fault Module Name:    TSMResident.exe  Fault Module Version: 6.32.0.0  Fault Module Timestamp:          4f2235b0  Exception Code:             c0000005  Exception Offset:           0000471f  OS Version:      6.1.7601.2.1.0.256.48  Locale ID:   &n... Hey hi After finally recovering my system to factory settings. I have a question and please bear with me. If i upgrade(not clean install) to windows 8 pro, how will it affect my Lenovo_Recovery partition? Will I be able to if in case required,  revert back to my windows 7 factory setting using F11 keys during boot up? Or this functionality will get erased and my recovery partition will be of no use. Also if i do clean install, I have read it that your windows will not activate as its an upgrade. In that case you need to call Microsoft and explain them your predicament and if its your lucky day you might get it activated. There are some other methods probably not legal to overcome this. Please share your view on that. Also how would re-clean install will affect the activation/system? Please reply. Thanks in advance.

Answer:Thinkpad X230 Windows 8 pro upgrade

Hi, neeraj_schrody

I've never personally done this upgrade, but I think it should technically work like you think it would. If an upgrade to Windows 8 is performed, then this should be installed over the partition that Windows 7 is using, which is not the recovery partition. If you made sure that the recovery partition was not formatted during the upgrade, then I believe it would remain there and the system would be recoverable through this. However, please keep in mind that this is what should be technically possible and is my thoughts, not a fact.

As far as the activation goes, I do not think you will run into any issues. These errors in your post normally only occur when certain criteria for updating are not met. Provided you are running a legitimate copy of Windows 7, which you are, there should be no issues when upgrading.

Hope it helps,Adam

Hello, I just bough an old ThinkPad X230 yesterday and the machine came preloaded with Windows 8 Pro (There is also a Genuine Color-changing Stamp of Windows 8 applied to the base of the ThinkPad). I immediately updated to Windows 10 without any problems as the Windows was activated automatically and everything is working just fine now. However, I'm planning to replace the hdd originally installed in my X230 with a Samsung 850 EVO SSD to boost up performance, but I have no ideas what to do to keep my Windows genuine after installing Windows in the new SSD.There are posts confirm that the activation key is embedded into the bios of some sort so the Windows will be automatically activated no matter what kind of hardware change I make. Is this right? I really need your help and deeply appreciate all your information.Thank you

Using the latest win 10 install media your license is read from bios during a clean install. So your good.Remember to switch bios into uefi only and turn on secure boot (if not already enabled). If your new 850 evo is not blank, make sure to delete all partitions on it during win install to get a GPT partition table. I also suggest you update the BIOS now before you start the swap.

Hello, I do have X230 , and recently i Have decided to buy LTE modem (WWAN) because i'm traveling a lot and need internet access. Also in Poland we have Aero2 nation wide network with very cheap data packets (1$ for 3 GB, or 5$ for 30GB for 30 days) so it is a lot of data as for "backup" connection. So i Have ordered Sierra WIreless MC7700 because that card is whitelisted in Bios and can be used on that particular machine. And..... card was not working at all, GPS not working, i Have started downloading GPS enablers and drivers for that card from lenovo but it was a time when windows 10 was "new" there were problems with drivers etc. but i have managed to get it working. everything was fine till the day that i Have ordered 16 GB of RAM and LITEON 256 GB SSD drive to make the mashine a bit more efficent. I had to install Clean copy of WIN 10 because of drive swap, and now i cannot connect with WWAN. The card is shown in device manager, i see it in notification center, alsow in control panel internet settings I do have Mobile listed. But it does not want to "see" the simcard. That is exactly the same simcard as before, and the simcard when inserted to the external mobile hotspot or phone is working flowlesly. But not inside my laptop. I was trying to download firmware for it to reload it to the card, but the installer on Lenovo repository is broken. http://support.lenovo.com/pl/pl/downloads/ds037401 file g7w606ww.exe is broken, i have tes... Apologies if this is reprising and earlier question on this topic. I have recently acquired an old-ish second-hand ThinkPad X230 [2325SWK build with a G2ET91WW (2.51) BIOS], accompanied by a ThinkPad UltraBase Series 3 docking station [P/N 0B67692] which has an empty 2½" bay.I need advice on the following issues:1    The X230 currently has an SSD installed [Samsung 128GB MZ7TD128HAFV-000L1] which will not be large enough for the programs and program data that I have planned to install.  I would like to upgrade to a 1 1TB SSD, and I propose to clone the contents of the existing 128 GB drive to a 1 TB Samsung 850 Evo [MZ-75E1T0B].  Are there any SATA or other firmware issues that I should be aware of before acquiring the 1 TB drive, arranging for its cloning and for the replacement of the current 128 GB drive?2    I would like to populate the empty 2½" bay on the UltraBase Series 3 docking station with an HDD, and the model I have in mind is a 2 TB Seagate BarraCuda Hard Drive [ST2000LM015].  Again, I'd like to know if there are any hardware, firmware or other issues before acquisition and installation.I'd be grateful for any help on either of these two issues in an Australian context.

Dear lenovo, My lenovo x230 has just started to give wierd 'band' on the display I have a 12.5" Premium HD (1366x768) LED Backlit Display. The lenovo was bought in June 2013. I have attached the relevant pictures. I can tilt the screen to a few positions where the band does not appear, it begins to appear when I move the screen. Is it only a wire/connection issue or will I have to replace the entire LED panel ? http://s18.postimg.org/op9qexa09/IMG_20140720_190452.jpg Thank you ;-) DVartak

I have been waiting for one year for the x230 tablet with the win8 installed, but unfortunately, Lenovo did nothing's, why it have to wait, rather than upgrade my self, I believe the current x230t ,s some function will not work , as Lenovo also remove win8 from their websiteX230 tablet as a top level business laptop without windows8 is unreasonable, as win8 already available for so long timeI also believe Lenovo will have to do something to produce x230t with windows8, or new x240t with win8, because too many thinkpad fans waiting for that

Answer:Why thinkpad x230 tablet without windows 8 installed from the factory? What is the real reason?

To be a windows 8 certified device with touch screen feature, it has to have at least 5 points touch. The X220t and X230t uses a 2 point touch screen, so they do not meet the minimum requirement for Windows 8.

Hi folks
Computer specs at the end of this post.

I'm suddenly having trouble starting my computer normally. I came home yesterday to find the machine stuck on the Windows loading screen - apparently it had been there for hours when my son tried to start it. It wasn't frozen, the animation was going but it wasn't proceeding with boot.
I powered it down and restarted. This resulted in a blue screen informing me that Windows has encountered a problem, needs to close to avoid damage, said to check the BIOS,etc. The code at the end of this screen was:

STOP: 0x0000007E (then 3 sets listed which I can provide if needed)

Eventually I was able to boot into Safe Mode, but that did not last.
I began to suspect a hard drive problem, so tried to run check disk and was told it would have to run at next startup. I said OK, restarted and tried to boot back into safe mode, but the screen froze when it got to iomdisk.sys, while loading the drivers. It won't boot into Safe Mode with any option, Last Good, Command prompt, etc.

I tinkered around and switched my drives out ( I have two on this machine) and was able to log onto an old profile in Windows. I was able to run an IDE diagnostic from there and both drives passed. I can access and navigate through both drives, I just can't boot from my preferred drive configuration.

Now suspecting Iomegaware might be the cause (I have a zip drive I never use anymore, but never uninstalled the software). I renamed iomdisk.sy... Read more

Hi I hope someone can provide me with some advice to resolve my current problem on issues with powering up which i think relate to a BIOS update failure. I went on holiday, taking thinkpad with me, and turned off auto updates... Returned from holiday and switched back on and then kicked off manual updates. I went through Windows updates (8.1) and then onto Leno system and BIOS. Everything appeared to go fine (i wasn't watching it so if a message popped up i would have missed it), powered off and when i next turned it on i started to experience problems. What it is does is starts to power up, keyboard back light comes on, red "i" lights and fan kicks in for about 2 / 3 seconds and then stops and restarts. I can power off if i hold the power button on for an extended period of time but equally if i leave it, it will eventually boot up. This isn't always true, this morning i left it for about 45 minutes repeating and then powered off, rebooted and it went in almost immediately. I think this is a BIOS update issue and wnated to know whether people had had this one before and what i could do about it. have been looking at options to download latest BIOS and update or create a bootable CD (will have to buy a portable CD player to do this) but i don't know enough about this to be sure. I have all of my University work on here and don't want to do anything to muck it up (i do have a backup from today). Any advice would e greatly appreciated. Thanks ... Read more

Dear all,  I'm new at this forum and hope to find some help here - I don't have any more ideas for my problem... We've bought some new L540 (20AV-0031GE) for our company and did a clean installation with Windows 7.We installed drivers - everything was allright. After that we did Updates for Windows, Office 2013, some 3rd party products (Adobe Reader, Adobe Flash). So far nothing special, but after those updates all the Hotkeys arent working any more. I've had similar problems at a L520. After the updates it was just impossible to change display-brightness with the Fn-Keys.For the actual problem with the L540 all hotkeys aren't working any more. I've already updated to the new Hotkey Feature Program, but it didn't solve the Problem. I'm 99 percent sure, that my problem is in context with updates but I don't know which could be the bad one. May be one of you has an idea?  Thanks in advance for any help!!!

Hi. I have a Lenovo x230 2306CTO.I did a clean install of Windows 8 Pro, plus all the updates suggested by Windows Update. Then I installed all the drivers for Windows 8 available at http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/research/hints-or-tips/detail.page?&DocID=HT073834. I have two importante problems:- when resuming from sleep, the USB devices don't work. They all show up with a yellow mark at the Device Manager.Any devices plugged into those ports when the system entered sleep no longer appear, and no new devices plugged into any of the USB ports will either.- many times when trying to wake the computer, I find that it is somehow "hang". The light on the power button is on, the computer is off and won't resume, and the battery is drained. I suspect the problema is when changing state from sleep to hibernate, but I can't confirm that. Another user reported problem #1 at http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/X-Series-ThinkPad-Laptops/X230-Windows-8-USB-devices-unavailable-after-r.... It is marked as fixed, but the user actually had to reinstall the OS and skipped the drivers installation. I hope for a better solution of the problem, otherwise if I reinstall Windows 8 I will never be confident enough to install Lenovo's driver and will probably have reduced functionality or performance. Thanks,Nicolas

Hi, My X230 came installed with Windows 7 Pro and was working fine for several months. I upgraded my X230 (Intel Centrino Advanced n-6205) to Windows 8 Pro a few weeks back (10/27). The Wi-Fi was working fine for the first week or so. After that I enabled the Hyper-V on Windows 8 Pro and my networking problems started around the same time. Not sure if they are related but my wi-fi connection seems to have degraded dramatically over the past few weeks. At first it was slow then it started dropping connections and the it would not connect at all and I had to reboot. It is at a point now that it will not connect anymore. I have tried installing new drivers/removing and installing Intel PROset/rolling back drivers/Remvoing the hyper-V etc. All options seemed to work for a day or so. Right now the Wi-Fi doesn't work anymore. No fiddling around works. Very frustrating, how can I check if this is something related to Windows 8 or if it is related to Centrino. I'm *this* close to rolling back to Windows 7 and be done with this nonsense. I have about 10 devices in the house which connect fine to this wifi router. Thanks,

Hey guys, I'm new on this forum and I'm also new in using X230 tablet or any 2-in-1 laptop. This is my second ThinkPad but first convertible laptop. About problems. Shortly after I've got this ThinkPad I've installed Windows 10 because in my opinnion it works better and IS better than Win7. But after installation, I've encountered a few problems.First problem was no auto rotation - I could do that only by installing drivers for Tablet Buttons (it didn't bother me that much as next few problems).Second problem was not working Dolby Profile - anyone has suggestions why? I've read that eccp4.exe or something like that is not supported in Win10. The only thing with Dolby that did work was Dolby Digital Plus (and the equalizer there is horrible!).And third, and also MAIN problem was random screen touches. Did anyone encountered this kind of problem on yours X230 tablet? It happened only when I was fully in "tablet mode". Like for example I was doing some notes on classes and A LOT of times Action Center came up. With no touch from my side - I was only writing notes or not even touching the screen. Also normal touches appeared, not only Action Center sliding. Firstly I've got a little scared because it's used laptop bought on something like ebay. But my second thought was to go back to Win7 from recovery (which didn't work with F8, I've used SWM/WIM tutorial to fully recover system). And finally it seems that this problem doesn't occur on Win7. When I'm in full "table... Read more

Answer:X230 tablet - Windows 10 and 7 problems

i've been running windows 10 as a devoloper since before its's launch with very few issues.First make sure you download the drives from lenovo for winows 10 that till fix most of your issues.some things are just not compatable with the windows 10 OS look for replacements in the windwos store but your dolby does have a driver update. for some reason the thinkvantage software does not down load the drivers for you you'll have to do that on your own. Once you download all your drivers your X230T will run much more normaly. keep in mind however if you have the touch screen model it only supports 2 finger touch while winows 10 supports 10, it still works but many of the gestures don't you can chage your screen if your so inclined as far as i know there is no driver update. Good luck

Two questions: I've been thinking about buying an X230 (or the X1 Carbon), but the more I look the more I think I should take advantage of the ability to upgrade the x230 with both more RAM and a WWAN-fitting SSD by buying the minimum specs available.  The tests I've seen have mostly been with the x230 with the i5 chip and an HDD.  When I compared the i5 and i7 chips (http://cpuboss.com/cpus/Intel-Core-i7-3520M-vs-Intel-Core-i5-3320M) they seemed to be pretty similar.  Is the i5 sufficiently fast with an SSD or would I regret trying to be extra cheap.  Also, is it silly to get a model with an SSD drive already in it, if I'm going to get an mSATA drive anyway? Any advice would be most welcome. Thanks,.

Answer:Thinkpad X230 i5 vs i7, HDD vs. SSD

I have an X230 with the i5 CPU and a 500Gb 7200-rpm hard drive. It is plenty fast to do anything I need including having 2 machines running on top of the Windows 8 host (3 separate machines all running at the same time). Even so, I can run anything else I want. It is certainly fast enough to work with an SSD. I did not do SSD because they are not big enough and are still subject to catastrophic failure (no gentle failure for SSD's).  .... JDH

Hi I recently got a new computer (X230). Everything worked fine when I started computer however I couldnt get my monitor to connect to the laptop (extended desktop). I updated the graphics card driver and tried a few other display options (changing resolution etc) however nothing worked. A collegue suggested restarting the computer. When i tried this the computer restarted however a black screen appeared after the windows logo and I couldnt see anything to log back on. There is sound when I try typing etc however I cant see a thing. Tried plugging in to monitor and still nothing.  Any help would be much appreciated as I cant use my shiny new laptop. Rgds

Answer:Black Screen After windows logo on X230

Hi, youngbuchanan

I would recommend you trying to boot into Safe Mode to see if your display works properly there. The X230 can come with either Windows 7 or Windows 8 and the instructions to boot into Safe Mode vary, so I will list both below.

For Windows 7:

Start the computer from cold boot.
When the splash screen appears (says "Lenovo) being tapping F8 repeatedly.
Continue tapping F8 until a menu appears.
Select Safe Mode.
Hit Enter.
The computer should now boot to Safe Mode.

For Windows 8:

Start the computer from cold boot.
Immediately hold down the Shift key.
Begin tapping F8 repeatedly at the splash screen (says "Lenovo")
Continue tapping F8 until a screen appears.
Select Advanced Repair Options.
Select Troubleshoot
Select Advanced Options
Select Windows Startup Settings
Click Restart
Select Safe Mode from the list that appears after boot (should be #4)

It may take a few tries to get into Safe Mode, but it should ask you for the option after a few tries. See if you can see your display while in Safe Mode.

Best of luck, and let me know how it goes
Adam

Hello guys I am ready to order ThinkPad x230 from Lenovo.de but the only option for the battery is 29, 29+ and 29++. Will there be a problem or can I continue with the order?

Answer:Thinkpad X230 and 29++ battery

The ThinkPad X230 uses 44, 44+ or 44++ batteries. The 29 series batteries are only made for ThinkPad X220. The 29 batteries in the X230 will not charge, as it will be seen as NON-authentic battery. http://www.thinkscopes.com/29-29-or-29-batteries-in-the-thinkpad-x230/

After a trip abroad, my laptop suddenly stopped powering on. I brought it home, connected it to a charger, and then tried turning it on. The power light flashed on but nothing happened, so I held it down to hard boot it, let it rest for a minute, and tried turning it on again. Except now nothing at all happens. I've tried buying a new charger, removing the connection of the BIOS battery/laptop battery and holding down the power button for 30 seconds with the battery removed, but it's all to no avail. I notice that when I plug the laptop in, the battery light flashes green a few times. After letting the computer rest for some time, I noticed that when I hit the power button, the green battery light would come on and stay on. However, the fan does not spin up and it gives no obvious signs of life (no other lights, beeps, no screen flashes, etc). The area around the CPU does appear to get warm, however, when plugged in (the heatsink in particular felt hot). The warmth around the CPU area and the flashing battery light lead me to believe that the motherboard is still functional. I fully disassembled and reassembled the laptop with only bare parts but it didn't help. I also peeled off the black sticker shielding to see if there were any obvious signs of damage, such as blown capacitors, but found nothing out of the ordinary. What is wrong with my laptop? Do I just need to go ahead and replace the motherboard? Did I void the 3-year limited warranty with my reassembly... Read more

Answer:Thinkpad x230 won't power on

After all, the battery connects straight to the motherboard, and so does AC power, so it would have to be at least partially functional to give any signs of life via the flashing green battery symbol, no?

Hello,I have Thinkpad X230 with Core i5-3320m and wonder if i can upgrade the CPU.The information I have found on the subject is quite controversial. Some sites say that the CPU is soldered to the motherboard, and others say that it is possible.Anyone know some information about it? If this is possible I had thought of these two CPUs: i7-3632qm  and i7-3820qm.The first is 35W, so I not see anyproblem(which carries the notebook is also 35W).The second one is 45W ,so maybe it is not very appropriate. What you think about this?

Answer:thinkpad x230 problem

If you mean that screen comes back after you press enter on your hard disk? If so it could be. Your hard disk no longer bootable due to Windows is damaged or something else caused the drive to lose its boot so then you would need a reinstall but it could be another issue causing it so I will let some one else give you more ways to fix this.

Hi Lenovo community, I'm looking to upgrade the RAM in my X230 but I've been unable to find detailed information about the size of RAM (pins) in the laptop. I looked up the model number of the original Samsung RAM in the laptop and found it on Amazon, where it is listed as having 204 pins. Is this the correct size I should look for when purchasing new RAM for this machine? Thanks!

Hi All, We've recently upgraded to Wireless AC, and from reading around, I find that there may not be a way to put Wireless AC cards (I've been looking at the Intel AC-7260) in our ThinkPad X230's. Can anyone please confirm if this is true? This BIOS whitelisting is a ridiculous idea. If I pay £1000+ for a laptop, I don't expect restrictions on what hardware I can use with the laptop. Sort it out Lenovo!! Thanks,Oliver

Answer:ThinkPad X230 Wireless AC

Nobody? Nothing? We've got over 900 Lenovo laptops and desktops on-site, and if Lenovo are going to restrict us from doing simple things like change a wireless card, I will definitely be looking at using a different manufacturer when it comes round to refresh time. Disappointing.

This might be of some help to those who are thinking of adding RAM to their X230 notebooks and thinking of Transcend RAM modules as an option. In 2013 I had purchased a X230 with 4GB RAM module in single slot. Now when I wanted to add another 8 GB RAM, I saw references to Kingston, Hynix, Samsung, Corsair brands in some posts in this forum. Where I live none of these brands are readily available, only Transcend is available in the shops that I frequent. Today I purchased Transcend DDR3 8GB 1600MHz SODIMM module, CL11 2Rx8 512Mx8 (Part no. TS1GSK64V6H). This is 1.5V module. I have already plugged in this module and system now shows 12GB of RAM  Do note that the RAM ICs on the PCB are Hynix brand and the product is Transcend. Here are the screenshots of CPU-Z tool on Windows 7 Home Professional OS.

Answer:Thinkpad X230 - UPGRADING TO W8

Hi Kunlet,

Welcome to Lenovo Community!

As per the query we understood that you are looking for Windows up-gradation for your ThinkPad X230.

Before doing any changes to the OS (Operating System) or with HDD partition we suggest you to create the recovery media and then do the required changes.

Below is the link on how to perform the OS up-gradation from Windows 7 to Windows 8.1, Jonas_hendrickx has provided complete details on that.

OS up-gradation from Windows 7 to Windows 8.1

Hope this helps!

I have a ThinkPad X230 with a 500Gb hard drive (2306-CTO). When I purchased it, I also purchased a Lenovo Slim USB Portable DVD Burner (DY-8A8NH13C). The DVD device works well to install some software from a CD or DVD. I want to consider upgrading this computer to a 1Tb hard drive (0A65633) 1. Will the 0A65633 1 Tb hard drive fit in the X230. That is, replace the existing drive with the new 1 Tb drive?2. The 1 Tb drive is 5400-rpm whereas the existing 500 Gb drive is 7200-rpm. It has been nearly 10 years that I have used anything slower that 7200-rpm. Will the 1 Tb drive be slow?3. Since if is a new drive (no recovery partitions), can I order Recovery DVD's from Lenovo for the X230?  I think I can.4. Can I boot the first Recovery DVD from the USB Slim DVD device?  Will that work? or do I need to purchase a Docking station? 5. I have not changed UEFI security at all in the BIOS. Can I just boot the Recovery DVD?  and will it even install? I imagine I might do this in November after Windows 8.1 is released and combine the two upgrades (hard drive and Windows 8.1) into one exercise. I also might wait until a faster 1 Tb drive is released. Do you imagine fast 1 Tb hard drives in the near future? Thank you, .... JDH

Solved!

Answer:Upgrade a ThinkPad X230

1. The 0A65633 is a 9.5 mm drive, so it won't fit the X230. It requires 7 mm drives. 2. The speed of the drive is not only dependent on the RPM of the drive, there are other factors too i.e. amount of drive memory cache, etc. Since the density of the data of the 1TB drive more than 500 GB drive, then for each rotation theoretically the reader/writer head should also pick up/write more data thus making it faster. 3. Yes you can. Or make your own. 4. Yes you can. Or use a USB thumb drive to recover from. Fast platter hdd? The technology of platter will only allow so much data to be read, we are pretty much at the technological dead end with the current platter hdd in terms of transfer rate. Don't expect revolutionary breakthrough with the current platter hdd, i am expecting only tiny speed increase increments. I mean if you need speed, use a mSATA drive (maybe 64 gigs one) to act as a cache drive with Lenovo ExpressCache software, or get a SSHD (which is basically a platter hdd with SSD cache installed) pretty much same as the mSATA + normal spinning platter in terms of how it works.

Hi All, I have an X230 with 16GB RAM and am aware that the documented maximum is 16GB. The processor however does support upto 32GB;http://ark.intel.com/products/64896/Intel-Core-i5-3320M-Processor-3M-Cache-up-to-3_30-GHz Does anyone know if this will work (unsupported), or know of any technical reasons not to go beyond 16GB? I'm struggling to run my home lab on 16GB and desperately need a solution for additional RAM without buying a new W series system. Thanks,Jon

Answer:Thinkpad X230 - Maximum RAM

Welcome Jon!The processor you describe could also be used on laptops with 4 memory slots. (8GB x 4 DIMM), therefore techinically the processor supports up to 32GB of RAM.However, ThinkPad X230 motherboard only provides 2 memory slots, which is pretty normal for lightweight machines. Usually, only 15" high-powered machines such as W540 provides option for 4 memory slots. Therefore, you are limited to 16GB on X230.Hope this answers your question.

I'm considering making the switch to a ThinkPad X230, but I need big storage space (right now I keep a HDD in the Ultrabay of my T420s).  Can anyone recommend some 512 GB SSD options?  I want quality and reliability and a good warranty.  I wish Lenovo offered one as I prefer to keep the all the parts backed by Lenovo, but in this case they offer no option so I have to look elsewhere. I have done some searching and the new Samsung 840 Pro Series looks good:http://www.samsung.com/us/computer/memory-storage/MZ-7PD512BW There is also an older Samsung 830 Series, and I believe Crucial makes a 512GB option as well. Also, if I add a mSATA SSD under the palm rest, could Lenovo really deny me warranty on unrelated issues in the future because of that?  I buy 3-year and 4-year on-site warranties on my machines (and I have used them), so I do not want to jeapordize my warranty.

Hey Hi,  I am planning to upgrade my Thinkpad X230s memory to 8GB. I have few questions, it would be a great help if someone can help me.1) Is it better to use 2x4GB configuration or 1x8GB? What are the advantages? (Does Thinkpad X230 support dual channel configuration?)2) CPU-Z shows that my current RAM is running at 1.5 V. Can I put two 4GB RAM running at 1.35V? (Does Thinkpad X230 support DDR3L type memory?)3) What would happen if I use two RAM having different CAS latency? Thanks in advance.

I have a ThinkPad Windows 7, was working fine for months. Couple of days ago the browser (Chrome or IE) closed while browsing a site. Today when I started, it showed the ThinkPad screen for a few seconds, then the screen went black with a horizontal cursor (like _) flickered on the top-left corner of the screen for 3-4 seconds and went back to the ThinkPad screen and then again to the horizontal cursor flickering for 3-4 seconds and back to the ThinkPad screen. When I press the blue ThinkVantage button, it gives me the option to enter BIOS setup, which I am able to enter and then the BIOS screen remains and I am able to browse through various options but not sure what I can do in BIOS setup to fix this issue. I have -a) removed the battery, pressed the power button for more than a minute, plugged in power adapter and tried starting without the battery plugged in but same issueb) I checked for RAM and could see only 1 RAM so I think I cannot remove itc) Visually inspected the USB ports and none seem to be damaged Not sure how to remove the CMOS battery as was suggested in one forum. Any suggestions what I can do to fix it would be appreciated. Not even sure how to find out which model ThinkPad it is. Help. Arb

I recently had a problem where my X230 i7 would not power up. It was sent away for repair under warranty. The repair centre replaced the system board and sent it back. I found that the original hard disk and the disks from my other 200 series laptop would not boot up. when I rang the support centre they said that the new level of system board is incompatible with existing disks. they then sent me a set of factory image DVDs which I installed successfully giving me the basic factory default installation. I then tried doing a restore of my original system onto this disk which was unsuccessful. I rang the support centre and described the problem they said that the new updated system board will not support a windows restore.I asked if this was going to affect other users who have new system boards fitted, to which they assumed that it would but I was probably the first to experience this.Just wanted others to know of this and to ask if anyone has a solution rather than re-installing all my programs and configuration from sctratch. Bob

Hi all, the Down and the Right arrows keys are stopped working appropriately. When I press the Down arrow key quickly 5 times, it not only jumps 5 lines, but jumps as if I pressed the Page Down button. The problem is similar in the case of the Right arrow: if I press it quickly 3-5 times, the cursor jumps to the end of the line, as if I pressed the End button. The space key has also a problem. If the cursor is inside a word, and I press the space quickly, it starts to separate the word. Example: ab[cursor]cdefghijkl => ab    cde f  ghijk l. I've tested different programs: Notepad++, MS Word, Android Studio, (even booted to Safe Mode) but the problem is the same in all programs. If I press the keys slowly, the problems described above do not appear. The OS is the latest Win10, latest drivers. The problem appeared cca. 2 weeks before, I don't think that I had changed any of the system settings. The other arrow keys are working properly.Model: Thinkpad x230, 2325-Y12. Thank you!Alex

Have you tried to boot a Linux Distro out of a USB-drive? Just to rule out any software/drivers problem.

If you still face the same issue in Linux you most probably have a keyboard or another hardware problem. Swapping a keyboard is quite easy for a X230 and replacement parts not expensive.

What happens if you attach an external usb keyboard?

Hey, Im planning to order a x230 soon, and I was wondering, if I choose not to have an expresscard reader, will there just be a hole there? I've heard people say their left palm wrest is really flimsy. Is it like that with and without an expresscard reader? Thanks

Answer:Thinkpad x230 expresscard question

Yep, there is just the slot for the card covered by a very flimsy feeling flap. That section of the palmrest flexes a lot. I haven't tried putting a filler piece in but that would probably solve the problem. Aftermarket (i.e. non-OE) expresscards should work fine and are a fraction of the cost.

It's been about 5 months since I started to use my Thinkpad  X230.  Only three days ago it could work for 5-6 hours without charging.  I could charge it at home, bring it to school and use it without charging.  But suddenly the battery started to die in a short amount of time.  Then I explored the battery settings a little bit.  I found out it says "Battery Condition: poor" and "Your battery can 47% of its original full charge capacity."   It has warranty until 2015. So can Lenovo send me a new battery if I want so? Or is it a problem that warranty doesn't cover? Please help!!

Answer:Thinkpad X230 Battery issues

Well, a few things. 1.  The warranty you mention sounds like it is for the system.  The system and battery typically have different warranty terms.  Unless of course you did order an additional battery warranty. 2.  However, the base battery warranty is one year, so if you contact them they should get you a replacement since you are only a few months into ownership. Good luck!

Hi all!I have ThinkPad x230 with preinstalled 64-bit Windows 7. Laptop has UEFI support, but current mode is "Legacy". I want to replace HDD with SSD and also reinstall Windows using UEFI (later I also plan to install Linux as second OS).I've searched and found [url=http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Windows-7-Knowledge-Base/Prepare-an-usb-thumb-drive-to-boot-windows-7-in... article[/url] with nice instructions about switching to UEFI. But what about ThinkVantage functionality? In some articles I've found information that several features will be unavailable when UEFI used (for exmaple fingerprint reader). Is it safe to switch to UEFI?Thanks a lot and sorry for my bad English.

Solved!

Answer:ThinkVantage on ThinkPad x230 with UEFI

If you plan to use Win7 there is no benefit to installing in UEFI mode.  The reason is, because Win7 itself requires the CSM (compatiblity support module) which is basically all of the legacy BIOS features, even when Win7 is installed in UEFI mode.

As for the fingerprint issues you read about in the forum, those were all fixed a while ago, so there won't be any issue.  But some other Lenovo apps, such as Rescue and Recovery, won't work on Win7 in UEFI mode.  And within Lenovo, we don't do any testing on Win7 UEFI mode, so I'm not sure what other problems you might run into.

My strong advice is to use legacy mode for Win7, and UEFI mode for Win8.

I want to use my laptop like a desktop so only with the 2 attached monitors and the lid closed. You can configure Windows so that shutting the lid doesn't turn it off but I still need to open it up to turn it on. My desk arrangement makes this a bit tricky (it's under a monitor stand).  If I buy the Ultrabase Series 3 Docking Station, a power button appears on the front. Would I be able to turn it on without opening the lid if I used that?

Hello,  I have some laptops missing the strip of plastic above the camera.  I cannot seem to find a part number for this piece anywhere, including the HMM.  Any information you need I will do my best to provide.  Thank you.

Answer:Need help with a part number (Thinkpad x230)

Good afternoon.
Welcome to the community.

I looked through the HMM also, to see if there was any notation for the part you describe and found none either. In my previous experience, those types of parts may be included in a package called System Miscellaneous Parts Kit. Looking at the X230 FRU Parts List, page 3 shows such an item (FRU P/N 04W1418), but I have no way of knowing what's included in it.

Checking the FRU P/N on the Maintenance Parts Site, shows the kit is available for $19.50 + shipping, if you feel like taking a chance on it. Hopefully, another member will weigh in with additional details.

Hope this helps a bit.

OK, i found a solution. To enable 3G you should first install firmware update. Before doing so, make sure all network adapters are disabled - or just turn "Flight Mode" and flash new Ericsson firmware. Then install drivers as usual.

I am leaning towards buying a Lenovo thinkpad x230 with 6 cell main battery as well as a 44++ 9 cell battery and a 19+ six cell battery configuration (6 +9+6 cell battery configuration). My queries are1. Can all three of the batteries work in conjunction without any issues?2. Do i need to charge the batteries separately or they all get charged simultaneously while i plug a charger in the laptop?3. Is there any other battery option ( like a 9 cell main plus a 44++ 9 cell and a 19+ 6 cell, i.e. 9+9+6 cells) that can work ?

I have thinkpad x230 tablet, and I have mixed feeling about it. It is a quite powerful one, does most of the job but have too many design flaws - broken rubber latch after a while and rubber buffers in the bottom etc.,  I hate the new gen x240 laptop, especially the X series convertible laptop is discontinued. Stupid, in my opinion, yoga design. I, no way, want to flip the keyboard to any surface. Especially on a field trip. X240 discontinues Express Card slot, no thunderbolt, no digitizer. The removal of trackpoint 3 click buttons, which were combined with the trackpad. People complain a lot when they accidentally click the trackpad while typing. I am a trackpoint person, not trackpad person. So the removal was **** retarded, anti consumer, anti Thinkpad legacy!Pls, see this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jb7p3VkQCOo. I did not made this video but 100% agree with this guy.  In addition, it seems to me that newer generations Intel core processor (4th and upcoming 5th) was weeker than ivy bridge processor because Ivy Bridge processors are full power 35W, now, everything is low powered to save the battery life. I have a few questions: 1.Is there anyway, or any company that can make a better thinkpad x230 tablet screen (say upgrading the screen from 1366x768 to higher resolution, improving wacom pen digitizer on the edges 2. If your laptop model isn't CTO follow the link below and type in Machine-Type-Model (MTM) within Quick Path field:http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/default.pageIf short description of your laptop specification includes "WWAN" statement wwan card SHOULD be factory preinstalled. "WWAN option" isn't the same, it means laptop is WWAN ready, i.e.has built in wwan antennas and sim card holder only, but not the card itself.Follow this link:http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/product-and-parts/partsLookup.pageType in your laptop serial number and find out WWAN card model if it was preinstalled into your laptop. You might find out something like the strings below depending of your area:04W3785 - Gobi300004W3786 - H5321gw04W3788 - MC770004W3791 - MC775004W3792 - MC770004W3821 - Sierra MC771060Y3257 - Gobi3 WWAN60Y3267 - F5521 Mal60Y3297 - H5321w

I have a Lenovo ThinkPad X230 (which I love dearly) and have a few question about ports and booting.  I would first like to verify that the port on the left side of the laptop directly above one of the USB ports is indeed an ExpressCard 54.  I have searched the web, but have yet to find a definite answer, and my user manual simply stated "ExpressCard."  Furthermore, I would like to know if it is possible to boot an operating system from said port using an ExpressCard 34 SSD (64GB).  I have the intention of installing openSUSE 12.3 to the potential SSD and be able to boot from it.  I greatly appreciate any help.  I  would post an image of said port, but I am being told the image file is much too large.

Hi, I received my Thinkpad X230 two weeks ago and was planning to make backup media.  However, X230 could not recognize my external DVD burner. It was not responding no matter which USB port I tried. The DVD burner works fine with my T400 and X201. Just want to know how to get X230 to work with the DVD burner so that I can make factory backup media. Thanks a lot!

Answer:Thinkpad X230 could not recognize external DVD burner

Hello,

Your external USB DVD±RW disc drive may require more power than can be provided via one USB port in order to burn DVDs.  Did the drive come with a "double-headed" Y-shaped USB cable to connect to two USB ports on the notebook?  If so, try plugging both of the large ends into the ThinkPad's USB ports and the small end into the external drive and then see if it is now recognized by the computer.

Hi, I have a ThinkPad X230, which originally had Windows 7 installed on it.  When I accepted the upgrade to Windows 10, everything worked fine apart from one thing:  the built-in SD Card reader. When I insert an SD card into the reader, the computer eventually recognizes it as a SD card, but when I click on it I get the following message: "D:\ is not accessible.  A device attached to the system is not functioning." I have tried all kinds of things to get it to work, based on various other posts on this forum.  For example installing new drivers from Lenovo website, installing them in Compatibility Mode etc.  But none of these have fixed the issue.  If I right-click on the SD Card icon for my D: drive, and select Properties, it doesn't detect any used space or any free space. If I open Device Manager when there is a SD card inserted, I see "Ricoh SD Disk Device" under the section entitled "Disk Drives", and I see "Ricoh PCIe SD/MMC Host Controller" under the section entitled "Memory technology devices".  I also see " D:\" under the section entitled "Portable Devices". I updated my laptop's BIOS not long ago.  I have BIOS version 2.65. I have an mSATA card (about 120GB) for Windows OS and applications, and a separate 500GB traditional hard drive for my Data.  I have had this mSATA / HDD configuration since the very beginning. Does anybody have any idea what I need to do to fix this problem... Answer:Problem with fingerprint reader on thinkpad x230

Hi, ajbrewer93

Are you using the Lenvovo software when you are getting this error? If so, this error normally appears when the finger is swiped across the reader and the duration was not long enough. Also, I would make sure the drivers for the reader are up to date (which can be found here), and also that the software is up to date (which can be found here.) When searching for the driver, you can use the dropdown menus to filter by operating system and device (i.e., Fingerprint Reader) to make searching faster.

Hope it helps,
Adam
