Preferred Solution: HELP!! ThinkPad x220 wireless issue!! :(

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello ThinkPad-Community, I have a sporadic issue with the brightness control, thats mean sometimes I start my laptop from standby and the control with "Fn+Pos1 or FN+END" doesn't work. There is no reaction and no on screen display progress bar. Also in the default Windows 7 energy settings is no control of the display brightness possible. If the issue exist, only a complete reboot of the ThinkPad solve the issue. I've also found some discussions about this in the internet but no solution helps realy. NOTE: My Laptop has a complete clean install of Windows 7 and all drivers was installed by Lenovo System Updater.Does anybody have the same issue? Thanks for your help

Answer:Brightness control issue on ThinkPad X220

This is an on & off issue that creeps up on various Thinkpads. It was very notorious on my X120e, but it doesn't happen on my X220 at all, and I sleep/resume it all the time...It's a bug they can't seem to correct.

I wanted more capacity so foolishly replaced my trouble free 256gb Samsung 830 SSD with the 480GB Corsair Neutron GTX SSD on my Thinkpad X220 (should have stuck with Samsung) and whilst the Neutron GTX is hyper-fast, its giving me a problem. When i try to shut down Windows 7 (Pro 64 bit OEM), the notebook freezes at the "windows shutting down" screen (happens around 1 in 5 times) and i'm forced to remove the battery or hold down the power button to switch off the notebook. When i switch on the notebook again i get the message:"2100: Detection Error on HDD0 (Main HDD)"Pressing escape a few times does finally take me into Windows and everything works ok until i get the same issue again a few shutdowns later. I've formatted the SSD and re-installed Windows 7 again (in AHCI mode) but the problem still exists. This issue did NOT exist with the Samsung 830 SSD. The BIOS is up to date, ALL hardware drivers/firmware are up to date. I'm thinking perhaps the Corsair SSD is faulty so will test it in my desktop to see if i can replicate the issue. But before i do that, can anyone suggest other possible solutions?

Hi, It seems there's a lot of complaints around the Wifi adapter thinkpad b/g/n wireless (1x1 bgn). I really want to know how worse it is compared to Intel 6205 (not to mention 6300- it's really a beast, people say). Can somebody let me know whether Lenovo charges this much for a upgrade like this (thinkpad 1x1 to intel 6205), and is it worth? Thank you very much!

Answer:X220 with thinkpad b/g/n wireless (1x1 bgn)x1 bgn) wifi adapter

when you buy the X220 from US online store the upgrade from 1x1 bgn to 6205 was only around 15 dollars. It is definitely worth the upgrade from the 1x1 to the Intel 6205 (the 6300 not so much). Especially if:1. Your wireless hub doesn't have a powerful antenna.2. Lot of other people are using the same 2.4 ghz bandwidth. 3. And you can live with 150 mpbs (usually around 75 mbps are more common) transfer speed.

Hi,

I want to report issue with Lenovo X220 and Lotus Notes 8.5.x.
Problem is that Lotus Notes has missing some of its buttons.
Example if you try to forward message send button is not visible untill you refresh screen by pressing F5
I think problem is with Intel display drivers.

If you uninstall driver and use "standarg vga" all is working ok.
I have tested all Intel drivers that you can download on Lenovos site but everyone have same issue.

Also tested this with multiple computers and all have this same issue.

Any ideas?

Hello,I've been using my X220 for almost 2 years now and now all of a sudden, whenever I use my x220, my wireless internet would stop working (at random moments) what happens is:first the network i am connected to becomes limited and any program that uses the internet gives me an error  message saying there is no internetthen all available connections disappear from that window that tells me the networks i can connect tothen when i try to turn my wireless radio off and on (via FN  + F5 )  i get a popup saying no network adapters are supported by the lenovo softwareafterwards i try to reset my wireless radio via physical switch (on the right side of my x220) but nothing happens. the only way to "fix" this issue is to reboot. is there anything i can do to fully fix this issue?

Answer:X220 Issue with wireless internet.

Hi, lilvietyao
Have you ensured that you have the latest driver software for your wireless adapter? If not, the latest drivers can be found here. Also, which operating system are you using?

Thanks in advance,
Adam

I have updated to latest version 15.6.1 from 15.03.1000.163 (Windows 7 64 bit)http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/detail.page?DocID=DS015011 I have disabled virtual wifi hosted network by 'netsh wlan set hostednetwork disallow' command that always worked for previous driver versions. This version installed two adapters 'Microsoft Virtual WiFi Miniport Adapter' and 'Microsoft Virtual WiFi Miniport Adapter #2'  that appear in Device Manager and disabling the hosted network no longer works. The netsh disallow command reports ok but 'netsh wlan show hostednetwork' always reports Allowed state. I have tried to remove the driver at all, restart and install it again but the issue persists. The only fix is to revert back to previous one 15.03.1000.163 I think this is a security issue that has to be resolved because the hosted network can not be safely disabled.

Answer:X220 - Access Connections Wireless issue - Driver disconnected while associating

I share your pain with same Intel WiFi Link 1000 bgn.  After many, many hours yesterday I am now solidly running Wireless N at 144 Mbps on a LinkSys E4200, 99% reception from 30 feet away.   Previous to yesterday I could not get 'N' to work at all. First, if you have a newer dual frequency Router, this Intel adapter only supports 2.4ghz.. 1. I am using Access Connections 5.85, Windows 7 2. Router: 2.4 Ghz Network Mode: Mixed 3. On my LinkSys router Channel: Auto NEVER worked for either  'G' or 'N'.  I picked channel 4 by chance and things got better.  No further experiments.  3. Channel Width: Auto (20mhz or 40mhz). 4. Earlier forums indicate WPA2-P and AES must be selected.  That's what I am running. 5. Numerous references to "power" conflicts.  Set all Power Management to Maximum Power. (Control Panel -> Device Manager ->Network Adapters -> Intel WiFi Link 1000 bgn -> Power Management)(Access Connections -> Wireless Settings -> 4. Advanced Configuration-> Maximum Performance) If you followed these steps, Wireless G should be working stabily for you now. Now for the secret sauce to make Wireless N work:  go to http://communities.intel.com/message/82098#82098See Feb 3, 2010 post How to get 5100 AGN to connect at N speed?I am indebted to this guy. Save the instructions!  For some reason my EDGE 14 wireless totally quit this week and that... Dear all, would like to inquire if X220 will operate with two external monitor? I'm ok to close the lid of my X220.The 4337 docks support VGA and DVI, will both work together? What's working:- I have been using x220 screen with another external monitor through VGA connection.- Connecting Dell 2340L direct to VGA works with X220 screen, not with 2 external monitor. What's not working:- Recently got a Dell 2340L which contains only VGA and HDMI, which I thought HDMI would work with an adaptor (HDMI to DVI) port - no response although the Windows 7 detects external monitor display.

Hello,The laptop in question will not charge with the above mentioned dock when it previously did. If you shut down the mahcine and turn it back on when docked it works, but after this point if undocked and docked again it seems to lose it's ability to charge via the dock giving the "plugged in but not charging" message on the power system icon from the taskbar. As it stands the laptop can be charged by the AC port on the back and as mentioned when given a power cycle on the dock. The above issue happens on several docks with different power supplies. The laptop is no longer in warranty and it is possible to get this sent back and repaired (paying for the service) if that is an option. This is greatly inconvenient for the user affected and is causing disruption daily.

No, that sleeve will not fit the X220.You would want this one, ThinkPad X61/X60 Tablet Sleeve Part number: 41U3142. Here it is again from Amazon, X61 tablet sleeve at amazon. Keep in mind that sleeve will have to be taken off when ever you are using your tablet in Laptop mode.I only use a sleeve when transporting tablet, and it mostly comes down to personal preference.Hope you find something you like.

I've researched, but this issue is strange/unique. I use the United Airline clubs around the country as I travel.  When I first access a new network, Thinkvantage recognizes it as a new network, and I add it under the appropriate city name and it works.  When I go to another city's United club, it thinks it's the same wireless network as the previous city, connects to that old network, and I don't have connectivity. I must then delete the network from Thinkvantage, and find and add the new network at which time it works.  If you save 1 AT&T wireless network, it thinks they're all the same, so I find myself constantly deleting wifi network profiles, and readding as the new appropriate network name. It's a real ass pain.   Anyone have any ideas as to how I can configure Thinkvantage to tell the difference between networks? Thanks, Pete

Hello there, My sister has a IBM Thinkpad X40 when I reinstalled all the drivers the Wireless driver is the only one that doesn't seem to work. Yes it was working before the new Windows XP Pro install. I have downloaded all 4 drivers available from the drivers page and tried each one at a time. Still the wireless driver doesn't seem to want to work! So does anyone have any suggestions ? Thanks Scott

Answer:IBM ThinkPad X40 Wireless Driver issue!?!?!?

Did you install the right driver?
First identify the wireless LAN device and then download the right package from Lenovo.
Execute it and then install it from C:\DRIVERS\WIN\WLANxxx

How identify the device?
Double-click the network device in the device manager and select the "Details" - tab.
Find the four chars after "&VEN_" and "&DEV_" and input the chars found after "&DEV_"  into the upper right input field on www.pcidatabase.com

As the result you will get several devices from several vendors - search the line with the right Vendor-ID (kept in mind in "Details"-tab after "&VEN_")

Intel drivers: http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/detail.page?DocID=DS003567

Attention:
If you install an Intel driver to an Atheros WLAN device, the installation will be successful, but does not work. Same can happen with installing Atheros driver to an Intel WLAN device.

Hello I am trying to reinstall the drivers for a Thinkpad E 335 I have an issue with wireless drivers - more exactly it does not work at all, I have there an exclamation mark and that's it.I was trying also with Lenovo automatic tool to find the right drivers for WIFI but is not working better.Last ressort Driver Booster - free tool but still no lucky.By the way SO - Win 7 Home Premium. It will help me a lot if someone can tell me the succesion of installing drivers and can indicate me which one of them.....

Answer:Lenovo Thinkpad E 335 - wireless issue

I was also having trouble with the wireless on a Lenovo product (ThinkPad 11e). Although it may or may not help in your case, you might try just deleting anything that pertains to the wireless drivers in Device Manager and then reboot. After I did that with mine, Windows said it found new hardware and installed the drivers and that fixed the problem. It originally had something to do with a Windows update that got things messed up.

I have attempted to rebuild my Thinkpad R51 but can't get the wireless working (never needed or checked it before). Unfortunately I did not copy all of the drivers before I started (a learning for next time). I have eventually managed to grab all the correct drivers (I think) from the Lenovo Support site and all devices appear to be functioning correctly. Note I had to try all 3 of the wireless drivers listed until one matched the device (I had no idea exactly what device it was before I started). Eventually ended up with a Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 2200BG Network Adapter. The wireless LED is on - i assume showing that wireless networks are being found (it lists multiple wireless networks that I could connect to). The WAN icon in the tray shows a red X. I can see my wireless SSID when I search for wireless networks in my area.
I am able to connect to my 4port LAN/Wireless Router over LAN but an unable to connect using wireless. My other ACER laptop (win-7) connects perfectly to the wireless router.
I have checked the BIOS setting to ensure the Network Wireless is enabled. I have checked the wireless network adapter config to ensure it has the Wireless Switch "ON".
When I try to connect to my SSID it asks for my WEP key, but I have already added this to the setup of preferred networks.
Very frustrated and confused

I had to do a fresh install of windows 7 professional.  Everything is working aside from the wireless connection.  I've downloaded each wireless driver and still the issue persists.  I can see the connection being broadcasted, upon entering the password to connect I only get "windows was unable to connect to xxx". I can connect to this wireless point from my phone and my other laptop plus no one else in the office is having this issue.  Only on this Thinkpad am I having the problem. If I try to use the Intel PROSet/Wireless Tools diagnostics I get a FAILED-Wireless Hardware is not bound to transport driver.  I've tried everything at this point with no luck.  The LAN works fine of course but I need the Wireless to work.  Thanks

Hi, I recently decided I couldn't handle how bogged down my laptop had got, so decided a fresh start was in order. I've got the OS and every other driver loaded no problem, the one that is holding me back is the wireless driver.  The IBM/Lenovo drivers download page for the r50e lists 4 different drivers for it, but none of them work.  After unpacking them to the drivers folder, and finding their relevant setup files they offer different error messages or claim to have installed, but actually haven't. The only solution I could see on these forums was to go directly to the Intel website for a driver.  Following the link suggested in that post lead me to the Intel page, with a link to automatically detect the hardware.  The Intel site failed to recognise the wireless adapter.  It was working before I reinstalled the OS, but I don't know if it is supposed to be intel based. Any suggestions?  Thanks in advance,Phooney

Also, I would recommend making sure all the drivers and software for your machine is up to date, which can all be found here.

Hope it helps,

Hi, I have the T540p, an uplifting experience compared to the previous brand I had, however I have been suffering from a recurring issue with the wireless connection. Once starting up Windows 7 everything works fine except the wifi connection which refuses to connect. Putting the computer to sleep then starting it solves the issue. I tried to tinker with options to no avail. My technical knowledge is modest so kindly I request support from your esteemed forum members.

Answer:T540p issue with ThinkPad Wireless 2 x 2 BGN with Bluetooth

Hi,

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

I?m sorry to hear that you have issues with wireless connection in your Lenovo ThinkPad T540p.

If you have Power manager installed, make sure that wireless adapter settings in Power manager is set to maximum performance as shown below.

Also, go to control panel -> Power Options -> Change Plan settings under the power plan you have chosen -> Change advanced power settings -> Make the wireless adapter settings to maximum performance.

Next, go to the device manager, select your Wi-Fi card -> go to Properties -> Advanced ->  Set "Transmit Power" to maximum, and "Roaming Aggressiveness" to lowest setting.

Also, under the "Power Management" tab, remove tick for "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power". And click "OK" to save the setting and reboot the PC.

Hope the above suggestions will help to resolve your concern!

Best regards,
Mithun.

Once troubleshoot is complete it says to investigate router or access point issues. I have reset the router many times. Other devices are working fine with the internet just not this laptop.

unlikely to be this as it is reporting NO networks available - but check anyway please

theres often a physical switch or a combination of the FN and one of the F keys to toggle the wireless on/off
often F2 is used - but note , not always - look for a symbol that looks a little like (( i ))

is the wireless on?

Hi,
We deployed 10 Lenovo Thinkpad Edge E530 (M/N   MP1ZPZA) laptops for a new customer installation.
All systems are running Windows 7 64-bit Professional
The laptops are connected wireless in a Windows Server 2008R2 domain.
We have noticed some slow connectivity issues.
Multiple access points were tested but still had the same issue.
Whenever we ping a workstation the response time is over 800 milliseconds.
I updated the drivers using Lenovo ThinkVantage Tools and I didn?t get any improvement.  Because the wireless adapter is Intel, I installed the latest drivers provided by Intel but the result was the same.
I found that after running Intel WiDi application on any laptop the Ping response time for that workstation will temporarily decrease to less than 5ms (a normal timing range)
A couple of HP laptops were added to the domain for testing but did not experience the same issue with the ping response.
A case was opened with Lenovo technical support (Case#902B6YJ).
After talking with Lorenzo, Ray and Alfonso from Lenovo support the conclusion was that is an engeneering problem  and they suggested us to address the issue to this forum.
Has any else experienced this type of issue?

Answer:SSD or SSH on Thinkpad X220?

Hi,1. use any drive you want - 2.5", sata II/III (x220 main drive bay utilizes sata III interface), 7 (!) mm high in order to fit into the drive bay with rubber rails. I didn't use hybrid drives but know successfull installation examples of such drives. In case of using SSD remove a couple sw on the laptop - Lenovo Airbag Protection and RapidBoot.2. x220 works with 2x8 gb (16 in total), PC3-10600 1333MHz DDR3, CL9, non-parity, 204-pin SO-DIMM sticks. But it works with PC3-12800 1600MHz memory type too, 2x8 gb (if BIOS version is priore of 1.29)

So i just purchased a very good condition X220 from ebay for around $90 to supplement my amazing Thinkpad W541. I'm really happy with the X220 and I probably like the keyboard even more so than the Chicklet style keyboard found on my Thinkpad W541. The only thing that troubles me however is the fact that I'm unable to get the memory utilization to utilize the full installed memory (which it rightfully detects at 16gb). I'm utilizing the latest unadulterated BIOS. The RAM modules are rated at 1333 mhz each. What's going on? Answer:Thinkpad X220 only recognizes 8gb of RAM, why?

Hi PulloSagata,

If you are running Windows 10 32 bit, the machine will only address less than 4 Gb of memory.

I'm guessing you are running Windows 10, 32 bit.  Look in Control Panel, System  and see what version you are running.

Hi, I bought a ThinkPad X220 with a Swiss keyboard, but I'd like to replace it with a "standard" US keyboard. Can anyone help me confirm the part number, and perhaps suggest where to get one? I presume it's easy enough to replace, according to the instructions in the User Guide... I did look on the Lenovo site under "Accessories" but of course they only list USB keyboards there.  Thanks in advance!Roy

Greetings everyone, I currently have a Lenovo Thinkpad W541 as my main powerhouse driver that I use for Computer Science related work (School and Work). It's an awesome machine, and I love it, I have 28 gb of RAM in it. I will continue to use it daily without a doubt, but I did not want to continue taking it with me everywhere, so I went on eBay and ordered a refurbed (but super condition) Thinkpad X220 for less than $100. It comes with a 300gb hard drive which I won't replace because as aforementioned my Thinkpad W541 is my main baby. However, it only has 4gb of RAM. I want to max it out to 16gb once I receive it sometime this week. I read elsewhere on forums that X220's do allow 16gb of RAM. Another question is does it matter what kind RAM from a speed perspective I purchase? Thanks!

Before I get flamed, I'd rather boil it down...I received my X220, with i5-2520M, that is PLENTY powerfulThen I ripped out the 2x 4GB ram and installed 2x 8GB PC12800 (800Mhz) ram, thats DDR3-1600 Next step is getting a 256GB SSD in there, but for now back to the ram... I am confident that without using more voltage, and without making any faults I can do DDR3-1866.The bandwidth is likely to be boosted by ~12% of doing so, and that I would appreciate. So my question is this; Any advice on how to adjust the ram for my X220?? There isnt any settings in BIOS, they just used XMP, do I really have to flash the XMP on the ram?

My Thinkpad X220 displays Fan Error at bootup and shuts down. I have taken it apart. Cleaned the fan. Applied new thermal paste on CPU. I still get Fan Error. What I am confused about is that when I press the power button - I can see the fan blades spinning at a high speed and then stop. There does not seem to be any mechanical fault with the fan, otherwise it would not spin at all. I have ordered a replacement fan. But I could only find one on eBay USA, so it is going to take time to reach me.Is there anything else I can do to fix this Fan Error in the meanwhile? It does not seem to the actual fan that is faulty.

Answer:Thinkpad X220 fan error

"Fan error" doesn't mean too hot; it means too slow. Thermal grease won't help.  There are 3 parts involved in the process. The fan, the sensor circuitry on the motherboard and a fuse that passes the current to the fan.. When you first press the power button, the fan is supposed to spin for 0.5 seconds at high speed so the RPM can be measured. Too slow gives you a fan error. The fact that your fan starts to spin means you are getting power so your fuse is OK. It might be the sensor circuitry, but it is much more likely that your fan is spinning slowly because the grease that lubricates the bearing surfaces is too old or has worn out, A new fan will probably fix your problem.

Hello Lenovo community, Today my Thinkpad x220 stopped working and is giving me a fan error. Is anyone able to give advice how to fix this? I was able to reboot once since but had no such luck again. Previously I've had problems with overheating already, which might be related (idk). I've checked the connection between fan and motherboard already: It is propperly plugged in. Other forum posts suggest a power drain by repeatedly pressing the power button for 10 to 30 seconds (depending on poster) without any power sources attached. This does not worked. @richk explained elsewhere that it might be due to (a) the fan, (b) a fuse, or (c) fan sensors being broken. As he suggests, I've checked whether the fan spins up before the fan error is reported (by visual inspection after removing the keyboard). The fan moves a tiny bit as if it was to start spinning. However it doesn't really spin and only falls back into the same position. Unfortunately I'm long out of warranty and can't affort to send my ThinkPad to support for them to tell me they can't fix it. Does anyone know what the most likely cause is? Will replacing the fan solve the problem? Is it worth sending it to support even outside warranty? I've also read here in the forum that lubricating the fan bearing solved a similar problem for some users. Should I try that? In short: Is there hope to get my computer working again or have a just gained an expensive paperweight? Any hel... Read more

Answer:Upgrade to Windows 10 on ThinkPad x220

Hello,

I have not had any problems running Windows 10 on my ThinkPad X220, but it is old enough that I don't think it is officially supported by Lenovo.

From looking at http://pcsupport.lenovo.com/us/en/products/laptops-and-netbooks/thinkpad-x-series-laptops/thinkpad-x... there are nearly two dozen ThinkPad X220-specific downloads which mention Windows 10 compatbility.  My working assumption is that they are for hardware common to the X220 and newer devices which are supported.

I would suggest dowing a clean installation of Windows 10, and then downloading the drivers and software you need from Lenovo's site, plus whatever Windows Update offers post-install.

Hello Sorry for the following long post, but I want to mention every point that might be important concerning my problem. Preliminary note:I can't really affort to buy a new laptop right now and I need one quite urgently for a continuing education which starts this week. So, I soon need to know, how to proceed - whether I actually need a new laptop or can continue to use my current one. About 3 months ago my Laptop (Thinkpad X220 with Windows 7) suddenly stopped after a normal boot, short after Windows was running - maybe because of a power issue or a memory failure, I'm not sure what really caused it. Several trials to boot it again failed. A few days later, after I had removed and reconnected most parts 2 or 3 times, including the CMOS battary, the laptop finally started up. But the next time (after a regular shutdown) it again didn'st start up. I disconnected the CMOS battary again and and started up the laptop. Then I put it to sleep only but again couldn't start it normally. I tried the same with Hibernate without success. However, a direct restart from within Windows always worked without any problem. Before trying anything more, I downloaded and ran the Lenovo Quick Test software (Diagnostic Tool). Answer:Thinkpad X220 with boot problems and "ME is in rec...

A new CMOS battery would certainly be a cheap fix and is worth a try, but normally if the CMOS batters dies it just will not save the BIOS settings, however, I have heard people who said a dead CMOS battery prevented their system from booting up until they replaced it, and described having no problem with Start >> Shutdown >> Restarts, while turning the system off and back on failed similar to what you describe.    The "Me is in recovery state" is also BIOS related (corruption) so I would follow the advice on replacing the CMOS battery if I were you. If you have a multimeter, you could also check the battery for voltage, which should be 3v DC when new, and any battery reading less the 2v DC probably should be replaced. .     It is very unlikely that RAM is the issue, and I doubt that your system board has gone bad since it was booting intermittently just fine until you left it off for an extended period. Good Luck,

Hi, I own a 2 year old ThinkPad X220. Till a few days ago, I used to get 3 hours battery backup on my laptop. A couple of days ago, my laptop battery dropped to 5% very soon. Then, it would charge upto 100% in 15 miinutes. I tried to do a battery gauge reset using Lenovo power management tool. Since then, my battery has been on 0%. I tried to do the trick of removing battery and AC power and pressing the power button for 10 seconds, but it didn't work.Since my laptop runs fine on AC, I dont think it is the fault of the power cord. Also, I run a dual boot with Ubuntu 14.04 and Windows 7, so it is unlikely to be an OS problem. Now, when I plug in the AC adapter with battery, the charging light falshes green thrice and after about 5-6 seconds, it flashes orange twice and green once, after which the light goes off.Is my battery really dead or is it my system's fault? Please advise me what to do.Thanks in advance for the help.

The main reason why I chose the x220 tablet was for school purpose. Most of my classes are notes you buy from the teacher (40-50$ a booknote) or powerpoints which I have to print out (Around 800 powerpoint pages, 400 papers per class). So thread is a good thread for all the students out there.  I was a big fan of Asus for their good quality hardware and for their EEE pc brand. I had a netbook, with a 10 hours battery life. So battery was my main concern at that time. I was bringing it in the lab and loved it for its small size and long life battery. Then one day, I saw a new product from Asus at CES 2010, the ep121. I was like ?wow, that tablet would be great for school!? I then did some research to find out more about it. That?s where I found the poor 3 hours battery. So I continued my research to find a tablet that would fill in this job. That?s when I found out about lenovos thinkpad tablet. I was impressed about the overall laptops but the x220 tablet stood out? 19 hours battery? I couldn?t find anything better. So I ordered it. For all the students who think 1300$ is expensive, let me tell you this. How much do your texts books cost? From my experience, I spend 1-2 reference book, 3 text book and lots of prints out a semester. My spending would be around 200-300 $ every semester. Right now, with my tablet, I?m not buying or printing anything for school. I borrow my friend?s books, scan them (process that takes haft an hour per text book) a... Read more

Thanks for the student's perspective. I'm currently waiting for mine and plan on using it in class as well. My previous setup was an SL410 with a Wacom Bamboo, so I can appreciate how awesome it is to cutout the paper from note taking process. I didn't progress quite as far as you with scanning textbooks though... baby steps I guess. As for the Fn key, I read that you can change that in the BIOS. I'm sure someone more computer literate has already outlined exactly how to do this on the X220t. Not sure if the keys themselves are swappable though...?

Hello, I have had my X220 for almost 10 months now, and I noticed a small crack directly on the underside of the touchpad. I had it for a few weeks and then finally the whole strip under the touchpad came off. Now, I don't know how this could have happened as I never do any real hard work or drop my X220 but I am very disappointed in the "military grade" build of this thinkpad.  I am wondering, is this covered in my warranty? I still have 840 days left. The direct message is: "This Product has a three year limited warranty which includes a ThinkPlus warranty upgrade. This product is entitled to parts and labor and is entitled to EZServ. Customers may call their local service center for more information." I have noticed a lot of other people have this crack problem too, so it is a fault on lenovo's side I think, I will add more pictures tomorrow.  Thanks all,Arhum

I have a quesiton I have not found an answer to. Will the X220 charge the battery, when plugged into the 90W charger (42T4430), if the computer is in use?  I used my computer on battery for a few hours, drained the battery to 30%.  Then I went inside to plug it in and keep working.  After 4 hours of working, and it plugged in to the wall the battery still indicates 30%. The same thing happened when I was using my docking station.  I arrived at work yesterday with 76% battery.  After 8 hours on the docking station, I still indicated 76% battery life.  My previous (other major name brand) laptops all would charge even if I was working on the laptop.  Is the X220 different by design?  Do I have to shut down and plug in to recharge?

I've just bought a ThinkPad USB 3.0 Dock for my i7 X220 having been at a site last year which had Fujitsu PR08 USB 3.0 replicators - those, once I had installed the driver, worked perfectly with two 1920x1200 displays. Anyway I can't get my displays (LG IPS235 1920x1080), either via DVI-D or DVI-I with VGA adapter, to work plugged into the dock. They work fine when connected directly to the X220. I suspect this might be a USB 3.0 issue as it seems the support for USB 3.0 on X220 is not quite what I'd expected (e.g. see https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/X-Series-ThinkPad-Laptops/X220-and-Mini-Dock-Series-3-with-USB-3-0/td-p...). USB devices connect via the dock, but at USB 2.0 speed (which apparently is to be expected). I can't see a network device at all (shouldn't it show up as another network adapter in adition to the built-in Intel 82579LM NIC?). I have removed displaylink software and ThinkPad Dock software (originally I went to the latest 1.7.15 but tried cleaning everything off and using the older version 1.07.04 (no luck) then upgrading to 1.7.15 again). I'm sure I read that this dock was compatible on a Lenovo spec somewhere. I have been through http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/detail.page?DocID=HT073584 So far it's wasted a lot of time and been very disappointing - I'm kind of wishing I hadn't bothered  (I'm not sure if the supplier will take it back as I've opened the packaging etc). Answer:X220 and ThinkPad USB 3.0 Dock - any success?

A quick update:Under Windows 7 I couldn't get the dock to work at all well - basically it worked as USB2 hub and that it. This included a long call to Lenovo and reinstalling the ThinkPad dock softare several times, from both the original CD and the latest ones. Note I even installed the latest version of DisplayLink drivers (7.5M1) directly from their site which did work (core went from 7.5.5172.0 to 7.5.54051.0) but gave a useful warning that the USB3 host controller software (Renesas emulation stuff) might need updating (and I found a 2.1.39.0 version, compared to the 2.1.36 Lenovo version, which I tried too - installed but didn't help). DisplayLink also mentioned (here) that Windows 8 had a different way to deal with older USB3 controllers like Renesas.Anyway, I was all set to try send the dock back and thought I'd try Windows 8.1 (which I'd bought and was thinking of trying out on a new SSD).On Windows 8.1 the USB 3.0 Dock seems to work fine: display, network and USB ports. Currently I've even got 4 displays running off the X220: 2 x DVI-D in the dock, 1 VGA plugged into the X220 and the built-in screen. I don't suppose this would be any use for games, but for business work it seems to be working fine so far Note: I installed the latest DisplayLink driver again (mainly because I thought that I was missing transparent borders - turns out that's because Aero Glass has currently gone from Win8!). For anyone who's interested here's the USB section of device manager - le... Hi, I am about to buy a laptop and have set my mind on a X220 with an i5 25xxm Intel cpu.I have been reading that some of these laptops got an IPS panel as LCD.I can't seem to figure out from Lenovo's website which models has the IPS.Could you please list the models for me that has the IPS? Also does it come with a DVD burner?..i actually don't want this.Is the harddisk replaceble by removing a cover on the side? I would like to put a SSD in afterwards and eventually upgrade memory. The max memory is 8GB? Does it standard comes with 1x 4GB stick or 2x2GB? Hope to hear. Hope the laptop is also available in The Netherlands within this month, else i have to find another alternative before i go holidays. I already have to let go of the delayed Asus U36SD.Thanks in advance. My intension for the laptop is to surf internet, play movies (avi/HD/mkv,etc) and do some programming in Visual Studio 2010 with SQL Server 2008R2...i hope its powerful enough for it. Cheers,LR.

Answer:Thinkpad X220 - which models got IPS panel?

I don't know if there is another model designation in other countries, but in the U.S. the IPS panel is a $50 option called the "Premium HD" display. The regular display is simply called "HD". The IPS display is available as an option for any model X220 laptop (in combination with any processor or configuration).

After 3 year of use, and recent warranty expiration, my x220 went directly to black screen. The system wouldn't turn on. After battery out, and power button reset, the system has ocasionally boot up to windows welcome page, but then goes directly to black screen. In other ocassions, it starts normally and keeps working for days, but then the failure comes back again, direclty to black screen. Currently, when traying to turn it on after battery-power button reset, inmediatly after ac adapter is plugged in, it turns on briefly leds for speaker, mic buttons and HD and bluetooth indicators, auxiliary keyboard lamp turns on, green led of power button and screen turns on, to inmediatly go back to black with out any othe response. Hello everyone,I own a Lenovo Thinkpad X220, and yesterday I tried to present something on the projector at school through the display adapter (not the VGA), and when I plugged it in my laptop suddenly turned off. I realized my display port was damaged, which was something I was unaware of. I unplugged the port and I tried turning it back on but the power button won't even light up, and I tried multiple methods such as the power button trick, removing the battery and running AC power only, removing my extra RAM card and other methods, but it won't turn on. However, my battery still charges as usual when I plug it in with my AC adapter. What is the problem and how can I fix it? Please help! Thanks.

Hello there, I have a Lenovo Thinkpad X220 42914CG that will not charge my 9 cell battery nor the 4 cell battery I bought extra.  This computer is only a few months old, so I can just send it to service, but I'd prefer to fix it myself if it's just a simple issue of updating the BIOS firmware or similar. Observations: When I pull out the power cord from a running laptop, it immediately blacks out, so I assume the battery is totally flat. When I plug the power cord in a shut down laptop, the battery lamp on the laptop lid flashes green three times and then stays off. When I plug in the power cord, power on, and enter the BIOS, the laptop battery lamp doesn't indicate charging; usually it would flash orange, then green, and finally stay green.  (The point of entering the BIOS here is to keep operating system-specific issues out of the equation). When I boot into Ubuntu 11.10, the battery indicator says that the laptop is on AC power and the battery is charged 5%.  The history charge graphs show that no charging has been happening the past few days. Here is the battery-related information I can retrieve from the ACPI driver:[email protected]:~$ tree /proc/acpi/battery//proc/acpi/battery/??? Answer:Thinkpad X220 battery not charging

Zta,

This seems odd that the situation has affected two unrelated batteries.

I know we had some no charge issues on other batteries and we've released firmware updates to address them, but I don't see the X220 listed.  Here is an example of the firmware update for some other models..
http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/detail.page?LegacyDocID=MIGR-75738

I mention these in case you are searching ...

Since those don't apply, I can think of several possibilities...

1) Software settings.  If you were running windows, with our power manager, you could customize the charging start / stop thresholds.  Since you are running Linux, I don't know if there are similar controls.  I'm also not sure, but if the system were off and the battery needs charging and you plug it in, I would expect it to charge regardless of the settings.    I don't think this is it because you note they won't charge even with the system off.

2) Out of spec AC adapter.  It is possible that the output from the AC adapter is out of spec - under volt or under current - less than expected wattage.  You can easily test voltage with a digital multi-meter if you have one.  Given the degraded system performance, this might be the first thing to try.   Are you running the 65 or 90w?

Another reason to start there is that service can just ship you another AC adapter and you don't have to send in the system.

Hey all, I have the Lenovo Thinkpad X220 that's done me good for the last 3ish years. However, recently, I've mad some connectivity problems with the wifi. I will start the computer and it will connect but with 1 bar. It'll reach at most 1-3 bars, for any network, and in any place (my school campus and also at home). Usually I have no problems with my connectivity but now it's become an issue. I was wondering what could be the problem? It must be the computer, but I don't know what the next step to take is. I've run a scan on my computer and found nothing wrong with it using Spybot S&D. I'm not completely tech-savvy so I'm not sure what the next step is. Any and all help is appreciated. Thank you!

Hi, I'm wondering if ThinkPads for different market will have different QC standards. I bought a laptop for Vietnam market,(as displayed on location lookup) and I can see that there's no ENERGY STAR (ES)  label on the lid as on many other Thinkpad notebooks for other markets like US. Does it mean my TP X220 notebook doesn't meet the ES standard? Thank you!

all the ThinkPads using the same components should meet the same requirement for energy efficiency. Some people could have removed the sticker, or that the lid was replaced during the previous ownership.

I just bought my laptop in March 2012 and I've run into this problem 3 times since then.   All of a sudden, the display will become very bright, oversaturated, for every application that I have open.   The pixel sizes remain the same, and most of the type is legible, but because of the oversaturation, the font is a bit more difficult to read/discern.   I've restarted and that usually takes care of it, but I'm wondering if anyone else has had the same problem?  I worry given my laptop is new and I had terrible problems with my previous Lenovo ideapad (large vertical white stripes took over my display, obstructing view of whatever application was open). I swore to never by an Ideapad again.   thanks!

hi lenovolinda,

Thank you for your post welcome to the community,

Based from my understanding of your post it appears that it could be a configuration issue. You may want to check your Bios version to see if it has been updated the to lates, which is v1.29. Should it is lower than the bios version i have shown over here, i would recommend you update your Bios first to ensure that your system is ruuning all latest drivers and bios.

You can update the bios and all other drivers by hitting the thinkvantage blue key found on the top your keyboard or alternatively you down the drivers from.

Hi I'm having some problems with some of the multitouch commands. For instance the scrolling to the end of the document, when scrolling with 3 fingers and the show open windows thingy with 4 fingers, similar to the mac "active corners". I keep on hitting these effects by mistake when handwritting in files with pdf annotator for example. On top of that, theres an option that logs you of, I haven't figured out the finger combination yet, but it happens a lot. How do I turn of some of the multitouch commands while keeping scrolling with two fingers and turning with two fingers. I only managed to turn of all at once. Or have you managed to link a lot of very different options, so its all or nothing, even though some things are good and some are useless?

Are there any other major differences between those computers ? Except the new keyboard, what are the other differences of the X230 with the X220 ? Hi, all: I found the touchpad, when the computer is plugged in to an outlet and battery is at 100%, jumpy and it misclicks often. This can be repeatedly demostrated by holding a finger in the middle of the touchpad; while doing so for 3-10 seconds, the mouse cursor would jump around by itself. Note that the issue exists on other regions of the touchpad as well but is less obvious.  My best guess is that this is a hardware voltage related issue as 1. my finger feels the increase in current from the trackpad; 2. the issue is completely gone when the computer is on battery; 3. reinstalling the driver doesn't help; and 4. it has been reported that the touchpad is jumpy when plugged in with a 90w adapter: http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/X-Series-ThinkPad-Laptops/90w-adapter-leads-to-unusable-jumpy-touchpad/t... The system (Product ID: 4294CTO) is competely new (that is, I have received it last Thursday). I had purchased a new X220 thinkpad with i5 processor which runs with Windows-7 Professional 32 bit, last week. The problem is that I am unable to connect to the internet through Dial-up with wireless USB modem. The modem is installed very well, but when the web page is being opened, it was throwing an error as "It has hung up dialup connection" and immediately the connection fails and it gets disconnected. The modem is very well compatible with the Windows-7 32-bit as per the internet service providers and when I reported the error, they notified me the connection is being blocked/hung. I tried with different service providers, the problem is same with all. Please do help me in resolving if any one had any idea. Thanks,DT

Hello, recently I removed by keyboard and palmrest on the lenovo x220 and put it back together however the touchpad seems to be slanted on one side and sorta "stuck". I have also noticed that using the touchpad to move the mouse results in decreased performance or sporadic movements sometimes. This is most likely due to the fact that the touchpad is not aligned properly. I am aware of how to remove the palmrest but I don't know how to disassemble the palmrest itself. I can't find any info on that in manuals or videos.

Finally, when I bought this laptop in Vietnam, the preinstalled Windows 7 ultimate is a crack version. After updates, the product is not genuine, so now I am using a trial version again. Does Lenovo include a free Windows OS when selling this laptap?

And can you also guide me how to do the step by step upgrade and procedure regarding my plan upgrade above items 1 to 4.

Please guide me. Thank you.

Answer:Lenovo Thinkpad X220 Upgrade Configuration

Hi, jarmonwhaim

Your plans are grandiose

1. Officially x220 supports 8 gb of RAM maximum. But if works with 16 gb (2x8 gb sticks) fine too. You can purchase Lenovo branded RAM sticks if you are a rich guy. I would recommend to buy the sticks of any vendor you like (Samsung, Kingston, Corsair, Transcend, Hynix etc) according to the following specification: PC3-10600 1333mhz DDR3 SO-DIMM SDRAM, 204 pins.

2. x220 supports a lot of wwan cards for 3g carriers worldwide. If you are not a traveller to US select Ericsson f5521gw HSPA+ WWAN Minicard. Note it must be with Lenovo approved p/n, FRU 60Y3279. I hope there are no specific carriers in your country so you'll don't need the such cards for Malaysia region.

Follow this thread for some discussion and information: WWAN card for the new 420/520 Thinkpads

3. You can fit any ExpressCard 34 or 54 you want - usb 3.0 adapter, eSATA adapter, tv tuner, media cards reader, audio/video card, wireless adapter etc.

4. Upgrade BIOS to up-to-date version and buy almost any 2,5" sata II (or III) SSD drive you'll can pay - Intel, Samsung, Crucial, Plextor etc. My advice is not to buy OCZ models. I would recommend the new model is better, the more capacity ususally means the more speed. Not the height of the drive should be 7 mm. You can post here models you'll find so we'll look at them and select together.

5. Seems your laptop is refurbished, at least the syst... Read more

I have an Acer AL2216W external monitor. It has a resolution of 1680 x 1050http://support.acer.com/acerpanam/monitor/0000/Acer/AL2216W/AL2216Wsp2.shtml When I use extended desktop mode with the external monitor set as the primary display, everything scales properly on both the external and internal monitor. However, if I set the internal monitor as the primary display, the external display does not fill the screen (there is a big black border around the desktop). In both cases, the resolution setting for the external monitor is 1680 x 1050. Is this normal behaviour?

I'm using thinkpad x220 4286cto with i7 and 8g memory. It was Ok before. I don't know exactly when it disappeared.I checked device manager but it's not listed there, and no unknown device is found in Device Manager.I thought it was because of a Bios update, so I rolled back the Bios to an older version but the webcam was still missing. Now I'm using an old BIOS, the v1.21.I'm using Windows 7 X64.I have set the Bios and I'm certain the webcam is enabled in SECURITY/IO PORT ACCESS/INTEGRATED CAMERA in BIOS.I have reinstalled the driver many times but doesn't work, Windows reported error when installing driver.I have pressed FN+F6 but found no camera listed there. Is this because of a defect in the hardware? What should I do?

Answer:Thinkpad X220 4286CTO WebCam undetected

As I understand the webcam is not detecting.

You may check in BIOS if it enable and check if it detects in device manager

If then also the webcam does not detect then it could be hardware issue.

You may contact the support center and get the service case log if the laptop is in warranty.

Hello I am using ThinkPad X220 with 9-cell battery (FRU P/N 42T4940)Yesterday, I update my system with Lenovo system Update, and the battery firmware update is the only important updates that I (try) to install. Long story short, when the program said that the sytem will automatically shuts down after the firmware update is complete, I clicked next to start the upgrade. Suddenly my system shut down right after the firmware upgrade started and when I turn it on again, it said that the firmware upgrade was failed and I need to turn my computer off. After I turn my computer on, the Power Manager said that my battery canot be charged because of poor condition from normal wear (my battery still can hold more than 85% of charge, more specifically 87%).I even tried to update it again using Windows 7 but no luck. From that on, I cannot charge my battery despite any ways that I tried (reset power gauge, take off the battery while the system turned on and charge it when it turned off, etc) Is there any solution for my problems?Anyway I am using the latest version of BIOS available (1.42 - EC 1.24)I am using UEFI booting with GRUB as main bootloader (Windows 10 and Debian 8.0) but when using Windows 7 I am using the legacy booting with GRUB as main bootloader

It may be that the battery is just failing.  There is a lot more to battery health than how much charge the cells can take,  If yours is the original battery for the machine, it has been used for a normal life.  The service manual for your machine https://download.lenovo.com/ibmdl/pub/pc/pccbbs/mobiles_pdf/0a60739_04.pdf

shows the procedure for checking the battery with a meter on page 34, but there are orter types of failure that won't show up.

A battery firmware popped up to download. I downloaded it but it could not finish and restarted my computer. Now, it is indicating that I do not have a battery though I clearly do. What can I do to fix this?

my BIOS date/time gets reset every time i remove the battery from my x220 (but if I keep the AC power plugged, it's fine). I'm thinking about replacing it myself, and wondering if anyone knows how I can access the cmos battery on the x220? Any pictures/diagrams etc. will be helpful! Thanks.

Answer:thinkpad x220 cmos battery location

I strongly suggest you contact the support and let them replace it for you. There are several different types of battery, all looks the same, with different pin-out, different voltage, and different characteristics. But if you insist, please refer to the Hardware Maintenance Manual for X220 here: http://support.lenovo.com/en_SE/guides-and-manuals/detail.page?LegacyDocID=MIGR-77125

No. The battery will charge with the laptop on - but not as quickly.

Hi, Yesterday I bought a used X220 Tablet - the version with Gorilla Glass - and installed Windows 10 Pro (64 bit) on it.What a great little computer this is! But what disappointed me was the lack of precision of the pen that came with the tablet. Unfortunately I could not find a setting - or program - to calibrate the pen. On this forum I learned that a lot of owners have to deal with a pen that is not accurate. On one of the posts I read it was mentioned that the digitizer in the X220 Tablet is made by Wacom, so I went their website for a recent drivers. Luckily, I soon found an appropriate tool, the Wacom Hardware Check, on ftp://ftp.wacom-europe.com/pub/WINDOWS/WacomHardwareCheck.exe . After downloading and running it, I was told:"You have hardware that is compatible with the Wacom FEEL driver. You can download the latest driver here: http://www.wacom.com/feeldriver " The URL led to a file on http://cdn.wacom.com/u/drivers/TabletPC/ISD_DualTouch_732-12.exeThe file is about 24 Mb in size. After downloading and installing it, I was able to calibrate the screen, with 25(!) calibration points. Accuracy is great now; not only in landscape, but also in portrait mode! Since I found no reference on this forum to the Wacom FEEL driver in combination with the X220 Tablet running on Windows 10, I thought it might be interesting to others in this forum. Cheers!
