Lenovo x230 - how to adjust screen brightness?

Question: Lenovo x230 - how to adjust screen brightness?

Hello, So recently I've noticed that I am unable to adjust the brightness of my Lenovo x230 display. The Fn+F8/F9 hotkeys do absolutely nothing. All other hotkeys work without issue. I change the brightness in Lenovo Power Manager, apply, and no change. This applies to both AC and battery power. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Mike Edit: Fixed by installing Windows 8. I guess it's about time I get used to it!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Lenovo x230 - how to adjust screen brightness?

What you could've tried before was installing the Hotkey driver.

Hi laxmish, I do recommend for you to rollback the display driver if there were any changes made due to windows update. If this will not work, I also recommend for you to download and install the latest driver. For G50-80 (Non Touch) go here. For G50-80 (Touch) go here.  Hope this helps.

I've just upgraded my system to Windows 8.1. And i stuck with this Dim screen. I couldn't change the screen brightness using the keys. I've also tried to adjust brightness from Power Plan on control panel, but nothing works. I had same problem before too, then i used to roll back the Intel HD driver, and the problem used to be solved. But after upgrading the system, there is not option for Driver Roll Back. So, how can i adjust my screen brightness again?

Answer:I am not able to adjust my screen brightness, Lenovo P500

After upgrading to Windows 8.1 did you install the Windows 8.1 drivers that Lenovo has available for download?  If not then I would download the 8.1 drivers for your model and install them starting with the Chipset driver.  The 8.1 Power Managment driver should resolve a lot of the problems you are experiencing.

The FN keys are not controlled by window/drivers. They are controlled by BIOS. Have a look through your bios settings and make sure that everything looks ok. If no luck, check for bios update.

My screen brightness using FN+F11/F12 and also in the advanced power settings slider won't adjust the screen to anything other than brightness and minimum or brightness to 100% when I move the slider.  It shows the percentage moving up and down, but the screen stays 100% until I'm on the lowest setting,  then it goes right to minimum.  I received a bunch of Lenovo updates on the first Wednesday of this month and I've had several issues since then, I tried reverting back to previous drivers, but it made no difference, so I'm back on the latest drivers.

Thank you forum! Much gratitude here for your selfless service!!

I am not very tech savvy but I am usually able to solve my own problems. My cat jumped on my keyboard, my display went dim and I could not adjust it ! I am able to move the brightness bar up and down but nothing happens. First, I tried a system restore but that did not work. I went back about a month which was the earliest restore point I had. Then I went to device driver and looked to see if my driver was functioning properly. I was told it was updated and functioning properly. I tried clicking on the windows generic monitor driver also as advised which did nothing. I went to the device driver on the pc and updated from that which also did not work. I am using windows 10.

Two of the keys on the keyboard are used to adjust the brightness; but, if they are printed in the second color, you may need to hold down the Fn key for them to function. If you can't find them (they look like little suns), I need the model number of the Lenovo to help you more.

Hi, I can't adjust the screen brightness on my X250 at all. I have Windows 7 on it. When I press + and - the slider thing shows up, and it goes up and down, but nothing happens. It's really bright and have already been like this for weeks. The colour is slightly wrong as well. Restarting, shutting down or closing and opening the lid does nothing. It got stuck after I disconnected it from my docking station, so I tried connecting it and disconnecting again - nothing. I've updated Windows and nothing there as well. I'm getting really frustrated since nothing works.. Is there something to do? Please help..

I still cannot adjust my backlight. Its stuck in medium setting and whenever conditions are too bright, it is very hard to see the screen. The default screen broke, and was replaced with a similar type screen from a lenovo B570 laptop. I've tried re installing the AMD graphics driver, configuring and all. Still no luck,  I've seen an article where BIOS update was reccommened, but I havent seen any BIOS update release for this model.Another reccomended cnfiguring the LCD screen software with a flash, but idk. there must be a simpler solution.   I am desparate for a solution. Ive even checked the screen connection and cable is fit in place.

Well I've had my laptop for almost 5 months now, however I did break it and got a screen replacement yesterday. Ever since then my screen seems dim. I've altered all the settings (as explained on other threads) but I still can't get to the centre of the problem. I had no trouble altering my brightness before my screen replacement so I do presume that the screen that the shop fitted wasn't the correct one and therefore a cheap option.

What do I do?

Answer:Screen Brightness won't adjust

Contact the shop that did the replacement, and ask them why it doesn't work now.

Hi, i've upgraded to windows 7 recently on my laptop and i think that it's really great compared to vista.

I have no problem with most of the things except for the ability to adjust brightness.
I could not change brightness the way i used to by using the FN + left/right key, nor the slider in power options menu.

The screen seems to be at the maximum brightness, which in turn causing my eye to hurt after some time of usage.

Any idea why? I need some help here.

I'm not sure if this is in the right forum. But in the last couple months, once in a blue moon I couldn't change my screen brightness, and now in the last couple days it's gotten a whole lot worse. Usually, I can't change brightness either via my 'fn -/+' hotkeys or via the actual brightness slider in the power panel. A full reboot or simple hibernation then reboot both let me change brightness again. But the last couple days, restarting the computer just puts the brightness on either fully dimmed or fully bright, and I still can't change it.

This is an HP G60 laptop, and I've had windows seven for a year on it. Like I said above it only started a couple months ago then got worse this week, and what I've found on google so far was all for newly-updated-to-seven issues. My drivers all seem to be up to date according to the windows update driver function... Can anyone help me?

since a reboot fixes it (at least temp.) it is probably not hardware but software. Do you have a backup from before the problem started getting worse?

Do you have the win 7 dvd to do a repair install?

Hi, I too have a Samsung Monitor (T220) which possibly - like yours - does NOT have the necessary software to link with the 'auto adjust brightness' system within the Charms Menu. You should however be able to adjust brightness (and anything else) via the controls which will I expect be built into the side (or along the base) of your screen. If you haven't already got a copy of your manual you can download a PDF from Samsung which will show how to make the adjustments you require.

I have a new computer , HP recline 23 . OS is win8.1 . It came out of the box with win8 , so I had MS store update to 8.1.

The screen is set very bright , OK for day use but too bright for night use .

My problem is that I can't adjust the screen brightness. After clicking on the charms menu and clicking on settings , the brightness icon is greyed out . It says windows cannot adjust brightness on this computer. I tried the various locations where the brightness slider may be but all the relevant screens show no brightness slider.

I don't know whether win 8 had the brightness control before upgrading to 8.1 ( I mention this because several people complain that after upgrading to 8.1 , they loss brightness control amd regained it by rolling back the driver )

I tried the update driver option but it says my driver is already updated. The roll back option is greyed out
BTW the display adapter shows two adapters : Intel 4600 and Gforce GT730 . How do I check which one is being used?
Any ideas?

So I have read a lot of diffrent ways to solve this problem and I have searched for hours looking for a solution, yet nothing i've tried has worked for me. Whenever i press the fn key and try to adjust brightness then it does't, it does pop up the slider at the corner but it only moves upwards and downwards only one level yet the brightness wont change even that much. I only found one other person that had this problem and he got it solved, but he had an Asus laptop and he got it fixed with some Asus drivers but i have a Dell Vostro laptop. One of the biggest suggestions i have found that has worked for people has been to install some older display drivers, but that hasn't worked for me either.

I would assume that the Fn keys relate to accessability options and they come from emachines. what driver upgrade have you done so far?

Answer:Can't adjust screen brightness!

Hello Confusion and welcome to Lenovo community,

The issue is happening due to driver compatibility,

Kindly make sure the AMD video driver which is installed should have the driver version  8.862.6.5 and you must be using Lenovo Energy Management Software version 6.0.1.5

If all the driver and software version is proper then uninstall the video driver and restart the system then install the video driver again.

I hope this should resolve your issue.

Best Regards,
Tanuj

Dear Lenovo Staff, I have the following issue with my Lenovo E 555 and Windows 8.1 64 bit: I cant adjust the brightness of my screen. When I'm pressing the F5/F6 key on the keyboard to lower or higher the brightness, the display on my screen shows me that the value is being adjusted to whichever value I want - but there is no actual change, the screen just stays fully bright. Now if I look into the device manager the graphic card is being shown as "Microsoft Basic Display Adapter" althought there should be a Radeon R5 in there. I tried re-installing driver, de-and re-activating them, did not work. It seems to be a common problem, I found some posts about similar problem with the E 555 but none of them worked. May you help me out? Thanks! Maurizzio

Even if I press F12 or go into the settings, the brightness bar will fill but the screen won't show any changes at all. Sorry if I mispelled anything but I can barely see on this screen due to this issue. Can someone please enlighten me? Hey all, I am having an issue with my Acer Aspire V5-431P-4653 running Windows 8.1, namely, I cannot adjust the screen brightness at all. It seems to arbitrarily select a brightness level upon start up and from that point I cannot change it via the Fn and directional keys or through the control panel power settings. I have owned the laptop for a year and a half and this problem began roughly a week ago.  Of note, when I attempt to use the Fn and directional keys the brightness icon that pops up stays at the frozen brightness level - it does not move at all. In contrast, when I open the power settings and attempte to change the brightness from there, the brightness slider will move wherever I drag it, but the screen's brightness itself does not change. At startup the screen's brightness may be at full, minimum or somewhere in between - but regardless it will not adjust. Anyone have any idea what can be done about this?  Thanks in advance for any help!

I have a HP Spectre x360 - 13-4009na  and have just upgraded to Windows 10. The problem is I cannot alter the screen brightness using any of the usual methods. - The fn buttons do not work- There is no brightness control displayed on the Control panel - Power Options- The Calibrate Display Colour method fails with an error while "... preparing to calibrate ..." - "Unspecified error". So my display is set to high brightness and I cannot change it. HI.
My Dell XPS 14 L421X is now a week old, and I have an other problem with it.......
I can't adjust the screen brightness.
Whatever I use the Fn F4 et F5 keys (the indicator appears and move correctly but screen is always the same) or the charm brightness slider, or the power plan settings, or the advanced power settings with percentage, none of these options works. My screen brightness does not change.
When I go into the Bios, I can change the brightness using the Fn keys.
I've seen several thread about the same issue but could find a solution to work correctly. I've updated my bios (which was A09 to A12) even if in the driver page of my service tag I couldn't see the update (I had to choose "show all driver for you product").
I wanted to update the chipset and the video cards driver, but when I look at the version already installed on the computer they seems newer, and when I tried anyway to update the chipset it crashed and the computer wanted to restart (blue screen saying it but stuck at 0%) and I had to shut it down manually.
Does anyone has a fix for this situation. It really look like that there is an incompatibility of drivers but I couldn't put a finger on it.
My chipset version is HM77: 9.3.0.1020
Intel HD 4000: 9.17.10.2867
And Nvidia GT630m: 9.18.13.697
Thanks you very much for you help.
Regards.

Answer:B50-70 Screen brightness locked and cannot adjust

hi diplomat7,

Welcome to the Forums.

Your problem might be similar to this article

Can you try the following:
1. Install the Default Brightness Level Patch, reboot the machine and observe if you can now adjust the brightness via the F11/F12 keys

2. If same problem, open the Device Manager > Display Adapters and uninstall the graphics driver (Intel or AMD) and ensure you put a check on Delete the driver software for this device. When finished, navigate to Control Panel (Ivon Views) > Programs and Features and uninstall the Display Driver then reboot.

After the machine has restarted, reinstall the graphics from the B50-70 drivers page or from one of the links below:

Intel VGA Driver for Windows 8.1 (64-bit)
AMD VGA Driver for Windows 8.1 (64-bit)

Let me know how it goes.

Hello.

Please forgive me in advance for some of my spelling / grammar mistakes as English is not really my first language. Even so, I will try to make this post as clear as possible.

So here is my problem. I have an Acer Aspire 4540 laptop that I recently repaired after laying in my closet with a broken display for some time. So I took it to a repair center and got my new 14' LED display installed. Everything on my laptop is working fine, even my screen is working fine. The only issue I've noticed is that when I try to increase or decrease my screen brightness it cycles between the max and min settings rather than dimming or brightening respectively.

Now, I know I've had this issue before but I can't remember if it was already like this before the screen broke. I have tried rolling back, uninstalling and reinstalling my drivers several times yet the issue is still there.

Im running on Windows 7 Ultimate x86 and my graphics card is an ATI Radeon HD4200.

I know this is a small issue but I need to fix it since I spend a lot of time in front of my laptop.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Hey everyone, I don't know if you know me, but I was Wii Master 64 on Seven Forums, so, it's good to be here! I decided to change my name, but I couldn't think of anything better, so I just went with what it is lol.

Anyways, I about a month or 2 ago, I went and bought a new laptop since my old one was starting to die on me and stuff. It's a Samsung ATIV Book 4, and it's really nice. This is the first hick up I've had with it so far, and I noticed it happening today. I noticed my screen was really dim today as I was using it, so naturally, I use the Fn key to turn it up, but nothing happens. Up in the top left of the screen, it shows a little brightness meter going up and down as I turn it up and down, but nothing changes. I went to the power options menu and tried to adjust it there, and alas, nothing happened. I googled this problem to see what I could find, but nothing really helped... I even tried disabling the display driver and restarting it, but that didn't do anything. What do you all think?

I re-installed Windows 7 64-bit on my Thinkpad X201 (3249-2EU).  Let me tell you it runs a million times faster now!  But the problem is I re-installed all drivers and software, and now I cannot adjust the screen brightness or get on-screen display to fully work. There seems to be some conflict between the Hotkey software and the Power Manager/Power Management Driver. After reading forum posts in the W500 and W520 section I tried troubleshooting using their suggestions.  To troubleshoot I tried this:I uninstalled (in order) the display drivers, Power Manager software, power management drivers. I uninstalled Hotkey features and Utility Patch software.  Then, I re-installed power management drivers and Power Manager software.  At this point, I can adjust the screen brightness but there is no on-screen display showing the brightness. After I install the Hotkey software, I can no longer adjust screen brightness.  However, volume changes are displayed on-screen. Any suggestions on how I can adjust screen brightness, see screen brightness on-screen and see volume controls on-screen all at the same time??? Also, not sure if this is a related issue, but the bluetooth indicator light is always on.  I have uninstalled the Bluetooth drivers and changed settings so that it will not accept incoming bluetooth devices.  What gives?

Answer:x201 can't adjust screen brightness or get on-screen display working

Another thing to add: Windows Update keeps trying to do an "important" (i.e., not optional) update to "Thinkpad PM Device" and it keeps failing.  I'm guessing the Power Management (PM) device drivers are corrupted and it won't update now.  I've uninstalled, then re-installed the drivers and this update keeps failing.

Hi, can someone help me with a really annoying (and I'm certain a simple one to fix) problem?  I'm not sure whether it's related to Windows 7 or whether it's just my laptop (SL500) playing up.  I recently upgraded from Vista to Windows 7 and every time I increase/decrease the sound, brightness, etc (it doesn't matter if I do this using the keyboard key or through the control panel), a black bar pops up in the middle of the screen, indicating the levels I'm reaching with the adjustments.  This is helpful...except that it doesn't go away after I'm done.  The bar remains there for the entire time I'm logged on and blocks text, images, on the screen as I can't minimize or even move it out of the way.

so as title suggested I want to change brightness of my display of laptop. the battery icon bottom right by clicking on it brings up window's default adjust screen brightness, which is a lot of hassle multiple clicks to get to it.

I have found a few application that could help me change brightness (REAL and ONLY brightness) on multiple monitors at once but its just looks different than window's default brightness change via battery icon. there must be something thats included in window's default brightness change, maybe colors temperature or contrast I do not know which but it isn't only brightness thats changing for sure.

so, could anyone help me and tell me what the differences are? why does it look different and what other things are changed other than just brightness.

also if possible, an application that changes window's default brightness change on multiple monitors at once, which I have yet to find a working one.

Hello everyone. I just purchased a new L540 with Windows 8.1 x64 on it and have run into a problem I'm seeing is apparently common. While my other Fn keys work as intended, I cannot adjust screen brightness with them. Pressing the buttons just does nothing and the laptop is running at full brightness at all times, even when on the battery. I have installed the latest Power Management Driver and from what I can tell, there is no version of the Power Management Software for anything newer than Windows 7. I also have installed the latest Hotkey driver (in fact, I've installed all the latest drivers for this machine.) I read in another thread that this can be caused by the latest HD Graphics driver from Intel but I actually can't even install that driver (says my system is not supported) so I am still using the latest Lenovo provided driver. Can anyone please assist with this? I want to be able to quickly adjust screen brightness when on battery but I can't do that at present. Thanks!

Answer:Cannot Adjust Screen Brightness with Fn Keys on New L540 (8.1 x64)

So I looked into this a bit more and it's actually not just the Fn keys that aren't working for brightness adjustment. I can't adjust the brightness AT ALL. The sliders are missing from Power Options and trying to adjust brightness from the Modern UI Settings charm doesn't do anything. I did some Google searches and there are a LOT of people having this problem, many of them Lenovo users. The solution for many has been to update their display driver but I have the latest release available from Lenovo and I can't install Intel's version. This is incredibly frustrating. A brand new, $1,500 laptop and it's stuck on the highest brightness setting at all times? Not good enough. Anyone had success figuring this out? Thanks! EDIT: Just to 100% sure this wasn't the result of a piece of software I installed, I imaged my laptop and did a factory restore. Even after that, I still cannot adjust screen brightness, whether with the Fn keys or any other means. In other words, this laptop was shipped to me with this rather substantial bug in it. I have a case open with support (who had no idea what to do and said they had to look into it) but I'm hoping someone figured out a solution to this. Having full blast brightness at all times isn't acceptable.

Hi and welcome to the forum!

How exactly are you adjusting the brightness? And does "sometimes" include waking up from sleep or hibernation, specifically? Detailed description is always good.

I am not able to reduce screen brightness in my Toshiba Satellite Pro..is anyone else facing this issue...got any solution..?

Answer:Why am I able to adjust the screen brightness after the Windows 10 upgrade?

On Toshiba's site for any Satellite Pro model, I'm only seeing drivers up to Windows 8.1. Have you tried reinstalling the Windows 8.1 drivers over Windows 10? This could work or you could wait for Windows 10 drivers to be released if the PC is fully compatible with the drivers manufactured.

I have an L500 - came out with Windows 7. I also cant adjust the brightness - the external monitor is fine. The other 17 laptops in the same school are fine - just this one.
The FN key doesnt seem to work - the screen on the laptop is so dark it isnt readable.

I havent seen any responses that answer this?

Answer:Satellite L500 - Can't adjust screen brightness

Hi redmg,

The FN keys are controlled by Value Added Package and Flash Cards Support Utility. So if you can?t use the FN keys properly reinstall both Toshiba tools. You can download them on official Toshiba page:
http://eu.computers.toshiba-europe.com > Support & Downloads > Download Drivers

But remove the old versions before you install the new versions.

After this all FN keys should work properly again.

Hello,

I've installed Windows 7 on my Qosmio G30-140 but I'm having trouble adjusting the brightness settings.
Instead of allowing me to set the slider to any position I want I'm stuck with only 3 steps from which to choose from.
The last one is way to bright and my eyes keep tearing up from having to deal with this insane amount of white, especially on white backgrounds.
The other two are very, very dark.
What's going on? I've installed the correct Nvidia drivers.
Also I can't seem to set the brightness by using the FN keys on my keyboard. They simply produce no result at all.

Help appreciated, I can't work like this.

Thank you!

I managed to tweak it down a notch at the Bios Settings but that still didn't solve my problem.
Please help.

Hi there,I just bought Lenovo G580 Notebook (20150) with Windows 8 on board. The issue is that I absolutely cannot adjust screen brightness. Buttons FN + Up_Key/Down_key don't work and system settings don't work too. I installed all Windows updates, updated all drivers and upgraded BIOS, but nothing works.P.S.: I tried to boot with Ubuntu live CD and screen adjustment works on it.

Answer:Cannot adjust screen brightness on G580 with Windows 8

hi irina_r,

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

Can you try uninstalling the Lenovo Energy Managerment  Software / Power Management Software from Control panel / Programs and Feature.
     and install This
          Lenovo Energy Management Software 7.0                cagt26ww.exe                21.2MB

It might be a compatibility Issue with the power Management

Best Regards

Hi there. I've installed a clean version of Windows 10 Home 64 bit, and, noticed that, with the basic Microsoft display adapter driver, I would be able to adjust screen brightness and would get maximum resolution as well. How ever, even though I disabled automatic driver updating in Windows before I first connected my laptop to the internet, it still proceeded to download a driver that it got via Windows update which ruins the adjusting of brightness. I tried to install the 64-bit Windows 8 driver that is available at support.lenovo.com but that one has the same problem, I can't adjust screen brightness when using it. Neither did the latest Windows 10 Radeon HD 6xxxM driver by AMD off of their website help at all. Everything else works perfectly fine in terms of Windows 10 except for adjusting of brightness, and, I am unable to stop Windows from constantly updating the graphics card driver via Windows Update despite the setting found in System Properties. As such, the laptop is, largely useless, and, has wasted loads of my time. It's a shame really, as, I invested loads into this laptop, and, though it's perfectly capable of running Windows 10, the fact that I can't adjust screen brightness wrecks everything. I have even installed the Energy Management driver, but, that doesn't help anything either. Could someone, please, advise me of some way through which I could make Windows simply STAY at the Basic Microsoft Display Adapter driver, or, w... First, techincal specs.
I have a Windows 8.1 Toshiba Satellite L875D-S7332, with a AMD A6-4400M APU processor with integrated graphics. My display adapter, according to device manager, is a AMD Radeon HD 7520G.

Now, my problem is that I'm unable to adjust the screen brightness of my laptop. I haven't made any recent changes, and I noticed this about a week or so ago(I don't typically change my laptop brightness, so this could have been happening for longer). In the mean time, I've tried rolling back my display drivers, with no success, and also updating to the latest driver set, which has also not worked. I'm not sure where to go from now, does anyone have any ideas to fix this?

Answer:Unable to adjust laptop screen brightness

Welcome to the Forums.
What happens when you try to adjust the brightness? Is there no setting? Setting grayed out? Or you change the setting but nothing happens?

If it changes for an instant, then reverts to what it was, adaptive brightness may be enabled.

First off, I see this seems to be a problem across all of your computers and has been for years... why isn't there a fix? I used my brightness down button once and now it won't go back up. I can't adjust the settings at all, despite the graphic on the screen showing me the meter going up and down. I've checked all drivers, tried uninstalling and reinstalling lenovo energy management, and I've still got nothing. I've stopped short of a factory reset because that's super annoying having set everything up and then a couple weeks after purchase have to do it again. Any other alternatives first? Suggestions?
