Unable to restore from DVD set - ThinkPad keeps rebooting to Rescue and Recovery screen

Question: Unable to restore from DVD set - ThinkPad keeps rebooting to Rescue and Recovery screen

Hello:

Lenovo x140e laptop / 2.05 BIOS:
(image link removed)

I have used Lenovo Rescue / Recovery to make a full disk image backup to DVDs for installation of SSD drive.

Attempting to boot from Rescue / Recovery DVD appears to load Windows files, start Windows then goes to this Lenovo R&R screen:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/f4h423vbk1rpfm0/2014-09-18%2008.53.21.jpg?dl=0

No menus show up asking to restore anything, in about 5 seconds it shuts down and reboots again over and over.

I did have BIOS 2.01 and upgraded it using Lenovo BIOS boot DVD upgrader, now is 2.05 and same result.

Factory reset would be OK, but tI paid extra for Windows 7 pro "downgrade" (ironic, no?) that I would like to keep. System restore disks that came with theunit are for Windows 8.1 .

Help?

Here is complete laptop box label:

New SSD passes diagnostic tests:

Preferred Solution: Unable to restore from DVD set - ThinkPad keeps rebooting to Rescue and Recovery screen

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer:How to restore applications on a new Thinkpad with Rescue / Recovery

Hi Casablanca,

Since Win7 and XP are having different registry settings, so there is no 100% migration here. This is more preferred to re-install your programs again. However you might use System Migration Assistance to migrate browsers bookmark or specific folder to your new machine

hey everyone first time user and hope the Lenovo community can give me some guidance! Of course Warranty just ran out last June and now this problem started up last night. i have a ThinkPad T400 type 2764.   Currently this is my problem: My computer has crashed within the  Windows Vista environment.  Forced shut down to restart the computer.  After the shut down my computer has not been able to boot back into Windows. Originally ran a HD Disk test from the BIOS:Passed the controller testFailed the Read Verification Test and Speed test, cancelled the test there. Then I booted into the Rescue Recovery Environment (F11)Booted fine.  Could read my internal hard drive that I thought was toast.  I was able to pull off all current files since last backup.  (The last backup was also in June of '13)  After that I proceeded to view my June 2013 backup.  Starts to proceed through the questions do you want to proceed etc.. finally click go and then I get a pause as the computer searches the external drive.  At that point I receive the message "The restore could not be executed because the selected backup was taken with a previous version of Rescue and Recovery" Not sure where to proceed from here.  I ran the PC doctor tests on the internal hard drive after and the results were:Random Seek test: passFunnel Seek test: passSurface Scan Test: failSmart Status test: passSmart short self test: failSm... any 2.5 inch SATA hdd with 7 mm or 9.5 mm will work, advanced format system won't matter provide you are not using Lenovo Recovery media or cloning the old hdd. I would say just get a Windows 7 or Windows 8 retail installation media, and not use the recovery media for your new hdd. If you are using the recovery media, AFS hdd won't work properly. Also they cost about 50 dollars from Lenovo.

Hi! Problem: Can't access {Rescue & Recovery (F11?)} on startup. Keep in mind that my "Thinkvantage Toolbox" freezes everytime I try to launch it while I'm logged in. I can access the BIOS but when I try to either press F11 to get to Rescue and Recovery I get an error asking me if I wanna do a windows resume or a stuck key, same goes for the ThinkVantage button on startup that is. Is it all linked to the fact that when I'm logged in and try to open ThinkVantage Toolbox it freezes? I tried to update everything from Lenovo and did nothing changed. Help  ! Thanks!!

Hi there people. First post so sorry if it's in the wrong place or anything. I've had as much of a search as I can and haven't found anyone with quite the same situation as me. The questions come at the end of the rambling background to my problem!!! Hope you can make it through to the end! My E520 recently just went beyond it's warranty and surprise surprise fairly soon after that I got a warning through ThinkVantage that there was a problem with my internal hard drive. When I googled the problem it said that the hard drive was going to fail and to replace it immediately.  As I (like an idiot) hadn't got round to backing up my computer properly (I'd saved all music, photos and videos to a seperate hard drive but hadn't done a Rescue and Recovery or Windows back up) I went out and bought a seperate hard drive to back up the computer and some disks to create the recovery boot disks.  When I went to the Q drive to do this I misunderstood the question about do I want to create a data back up disk. I thought this meant all my media so I said no and created just the boot recovery disks.  So my question (told you I'd get there) is this. When I replace the internal hard drive and use the boot disks to install windows will I then be able to use the Lenovo Rescue and Recovery to restore my computer to it's former glory? Or will the fact that I'm not restoring the Lenovo skin (sorry if my terminology is wrong here. Not sure what to call it) ... Read more

I recently created Recovery Discs in Windows XP, but when I insert Disc 2, it always says that it is the incorrect disc so I cannot continue the factory restore. Now I'm trying to restore by booting into the Rescue and Recovery on my hard drive, but it cannot find the hidden factory partition on the hd. It also now says that the restore had a "convertion" error when it wouldn't recognize disc 2 and will not let me try to look at my hard drive to restore anymore. If I use the RR boot disc, it will let me try to restore, but it finds nothing restorable on the HD.I did look at the hard drive and see 2 partitions with one being a IBM_SERVICE partition with 3.9GB total size and 2.9GB free space. Please help, thanks.

so I partitioned my linux so I could get windows on there to play eve and other games without having to worry about ATI crap.

I have a 39GB partition formatted with NTFS that's completely blank right now with the standard boot partition, the root partition and the main filestsym partition from my linux. (default install on arch) I had to delete the swap partition in order to make a 4th partition for windows.

My problem here is that my only cd for installing XP is my old thinkpad rescue and recovery cd. I have used the cd for many a reformat but only on single partition drives. Is there any way to use the recovery cd only on my ntfs partition?

ThinkPad X61 Win XP SP 3: I cannot access the Advanced options for Rescue & Recovery that would let me delete the giant backup file clogging my C: drive. All advice received so far assumes I can find the Advanced section under Rescue & Recovery, but I cannot. No, it is not under ThinkPad Productivity Center; it is not available under All Programs. Rescue & Recovery under All Programs brings up nothing after clicked on. I have been able to configure backups to an external drive, but cannot find the options for deleting backup files on the C: drive. Thank you in advance--this has consumed many, many hours so far to no avail.

Don't know if you read this : http://blog.jonschneider.com/2007/07/thinkpad-rescue-recovery-and-free-disk.html but it looks like you will have to un-install Rescue & Recovery to recover the lost disk space.

You may also just delete the files - See this link http://forums.techguy.org/all-other-software/907561-solved-lenovo-rescue-recovery-backups.html

Hi,I have a ThinkPad R61 (Product ID 8918A22) that was originally delivered with Vista installed.  When making the purchase the Lenovo consultant emphasised that I needed to make R&R discs BEFORE retrograding to WINXP.  I know that the first thing I did when I received the laptop was to produce three DVD's.  It is too long ago to remember exactly what I did but I marked the DVD's 1 to 3 with 'Restores to Vista'. Over the years I have done 2-3 restores using the Lenovo supplied discs to overcome sluggish behaviour. Today I did a restore using the 1st Vista DVD that I made years ago. However, it only restored to WinXP??  Additionally there was no request during this process to insert either of the other DVD's. The folders on the 1st DVD are BOOT, PREBOOT and TVTOS and a file in the root directory called BOOTMGR. The 2nd and 3rd DVD's have a folder called RRbackups.  A search of the 1st DVD for *vista* threw up D:\PREBOOT\PCDRWINPE\PCDR2D3VIDEO-VISTASPECIFIC.DLL and D:\PREBOOT\PCDRWINPE\VISTAHELPPANE.EXE.  By contrast the Lenovo supplied R&R disc has folders I386, MFG, PREBOOT, RECOVERY, SWWORK and several files in the root directory. Not surprisingly, a search for Vista on the Lenovo R&R disc showed no hits.  Several hours of browsing around various webpage and threads located advice on how to make 'Rescue Media' using ThinkVantage.  I see from one article that you need 1CD and 1 DVD to generate Vista Rescu... Welcome to the forum!

Personally, I'd just borrow a retail copy of Vista installation disk and install it fresh, then apply any updates that you deem fit. Original Vista media would be six years old now, and require updates as well.

You might have to give Microsoft a call in order to activate it, though.

My hunch is that the media you have will not do anything but install XP...which is clearly not what you want.

Good luck.

A failed rejuvenation of my V100 has left me a system that hangs at the blue splash screen. I can boot using a CD I created with my Thinkpad T61 and reach the Rescue and Recovery screen: if I then choose to return the machine to factory condition will it use the rescue partition or will it want CDs (which I can only make on the Thinkpad.)

Answer:Restore V100 system using Thinkpad Rescue CD?

Replying to my own post: the Lenovo care button (the wrench) did not work but F11 during bootup brought up the restore program (version 3 compared to version 4 on my Thinkpad disk) so I am in the process of returning the hard drive to its original condition. I would have liked access to the Windows restore functions, and the option to create a genuine setup disk would have been welcome.

Hello there, I have an IBM ThinkPad T43. The Rescue and Recovery program opens every time I power on my laptop after a failed attempt to restore my laptop to the factory settings. I can't even login to Windows because the Rescue and Recovery program opens up immediately after I turn on the power. I tried restoring my system to factory settings using the program and the Product Recovery Disc I purchased from Lenovo, in hopes to resolve the issue, but every time I'm prompt "IBM failed to restore your system". How do I stop Rescue and Recovery from opening and resume with normal startup into Windows? What should I do so that I am able to restore my laptop to factory settings? Please help if you have any suggestions. I greatly appreciate it! Thanks!

Answer:IBM ThinkPad T43: Rescue and Recovery Issue

Well, my assumption is that since you've tried running the restore (ie, reset the computer to the factory settings), you don't have a Windows-install to actually boot into anymore. Since the restore failed, you have a half-installed system, and the only way to get it back to booting normally again would be to reinstall the system - either by using the factory restore, or a stand-alone Windows install-CD.

Hi I've reading post about how to get the recovery partition back, and all I found is to use the recovery CD that you have to create it in the first place. However, my Thinkpad X201i doesn't come with Windows, it come with freeDOS. I install my own copy of Windows 7 and install all the driver from lenovo site. How can I get the recovery partition since I don't have the ability to create the recovery disc in the first place? Thanks

You can't create a recovery partition but you can create a set of Windows recovery disks from within Windows.

Does it go into the Lenovo branded ThinkVantage Rescue and Recovery rather than the Windows Startup Repair environment?Try downloading EasyBCD and pasting in the text from the textbox on the main page.It should look something akin to this:
There are a total of 2 entries listed in the bootloader.

Default: Windows 7
Timeout: 30 seconds
EasyBCD Boot Device: C:\

Entry #1
Name: Windows 7
BCD ID: {current}
Drive: C:\
Bootloader Path: \Windows\system32\winload.exe

I am using Factory discs (2 for the Operating System, 2 for the Applications and Drivers) to perform a Rescue and Recovery. The process took reasonable time with the first three discs. It has taken about 1 1/2 hours so far (progress bar is about 40%) for the fourth disc (file being copied is 4XVPXJA0.IMZ). Is this expected (have not seen any progress in the last 20 minutes)?. If unreasonable, what can I do to halt the process and try again (I assume I'll have to begin with disc 1)? Best Regards.

Hi, this is my first post in this forum and my first problem with Thinkpads!I recently bought a used laptop, a TP T61p, that have warranty until August 2010.When I received the laptop, I wanted to restore the OS back to factory default. I followed the steps properly. Tried both restore the system by pressing ThinkVantage-button at start, and tried using the followed Lenovo-DVD's. The problem shows up in the end when it is installing the Norton Anti Virus. The installation stops responding and the HDD-activity also stops. I have left the computer for several hours without anything happens.Does anyone know what is wrong?Thanks.// David.

i bought ThinkPad R52 Type 1858 - A17 a couple of years back from australia then i had to go to middle east (stil there) and last week, my ram got damaged and my computer wouldn't work, i lost all my work and all my IBM functions that i had including the blue button function so i need your help in getting these functions back (installing them again) especially that i don't have recovery CD and can't get one now  i also used to have a folder called IBM tools which had all the files related to all IBM functions. so i will appreciate it if someone can help me in regard of where can i download them from. Thanks in advance

Answer:Thinkpad R52 Recovery and Rescue blue button

Welcome to the forum! Unfortunately, there is no place that you could download all the contents of "IBM Tools" folder, since some of the software is copyrighted and not available for free downloads. Your best bet is to try and locate a copy of recovery disks for R52, you could probably get away with using recovery for T43 with Intel integrated graphics (model numbers 187x-xxx). Good luck and let us know.

Ok, So, I have a problem, I need to do a reinstall of XP on a T20 but, heres the deal!!  There are files on this machine that can't be delete because they r pictures.  I would boot into windows & pull the pics & things off but, I had the computer join my workgroup and it came from a domain and can no longer log in so, Is there a way I can do a  Rescue & recovery without formating the drive & keep the data?  I thought there was?  I try to press F11 to get into the  Rescue & recovery utility and nothing happens.  It boots into the XP OS.  Is there a different key to get in this tool on the T20? Thanks

Answer:Thinkpad T20 Rescue & recovery doesn't work! Help!!

Welcome to the forum! A couple of things here: a) No T20 ever has left the factory with XP on it, so whatever version you're running is unlikely to have a recovery partition needed for the R&R to operate. b) I don't have a T20 anywhere close to  check it out myself, but I doubt that it even offers a F11 option in BIOS, or does it?  Chances are, you'll have to do a fresh install from scratch. Hope this helps.

I have an R50p Thinkpad, XP Professional that I've been trying to reset to the factory state, with no success so far.I've booted into Rescue and Recovery 3 with the Access button, also booted using the Rescue and Recovery CD that I'd created a couple years ago, but the result is the same:After choosing the option to reformat and reset to the factory state, and then the option to not save any files, the program says it then needs to reboot, after which the computer boots to the usual XP desktop, with all the programs and files that I'd added over the years still there and functioning.  I uninstalled all anti-virus, Internet security type software, but didn't make a difference.  I'm thinking maybe the Rescue and Recovery partition is corrupt?  Does anyone have any idea how else to revert this hard drive to the original factory state? Thanks,

Answer:ThinkPad R50p Factory Reset with Rescue and Recovery

Welcome to the forum! It sounds like there's something wrong with your recovery partition. You'll probably need a set of recovery disks to get the machine back to factory state.Good luck.

Hi all, I decided it was time to upgrade the OS on my T60 (type 8743) from Vista to Win7.  I used Rescue and Recovery to back everything up to a NAS.  Before starting the OS upgrade, I verified I could restore individual files from the newly created backup.  After doing a clean install of Win7 and installing RnR 4.31,  RnR will not list the backup when I point to it using the network option.  Is RnR not showing the backup because it was made with a different OS?  Does anyone know how I can get RnR to read the data? Thanks in advance,-Marc

Answer:Rescue and recovery restore after OS upgrade?

What version of RnR did you use to backup your data?If not listed on RnR 4.31 (only for Windows 7), you can get the RnR boot disc from other computers (or via Virtual PC) to use RnR (compatible with version you used) to restore your data.

Good morning! Installed a new hard drive on my X31. I used a purchased set of official restore media to do a clean install of Windows XP with the HPA Predesktop Area in place. Two weeks later all of my Windows and ThinkPad updates are complete and I am ready for a clean backup. I installed Rescue and Recovery 4.23 and after a false start, I successfully made a backup to a USB Hard Drive that will boot into ThinkVantage Rescue and Recovery. The Windows software seems to be fully functional. On normal bootup, however, if I use F11 or the Access IBM button, I am taken to the original Predesktop HPA interface -- so the partition is really there. The Factory Restore appears to now be functioning if I ever wanted to use it. My problem (or questions) relates to the "Restore Your Backups" icon. When I select it, I get the message: "IBM Rapid Restore PC is not installed. Press the enter key to reboot to Windows and install IBM Rapid Restore PC." Therefore, that portion of the HPA is not accessible. And, therefore, other than a factory restore, there is no way to run restore from the HPA. So, here are my questions: 1. Is there anyway to put the Rescue and Recovery 4 predesktop area in this HPA?2. If so, would it wipe out the Factory Restore option?3. Should I have made at least one backup with "IBM Rapid Restore PC" before the "Rescue and Recovery 4" installer removed it?4. Is there any space on the HPA I can recover?5. Is there a tool or me... Read more

Answer:Rescue and Recovery 4 and X31 HPA Restore Your Backups

Is the version of R&R on HPA the same as the one installed under Windows? If you used original restore disks for X31, it is likely that R&R on HPA is an older version, there may be some incompatibility.

I tried to restore my harddrive by using the f11 key at the start up and when I get to rescue and recovery and hit full restore it says "preparing hardrive" and then says "%s failed to restore your system." I then hit ok and it stays at rescue and recovery forcing me to restart which sends me right back to rescue and recovery. I can't get back to normal startup or restore my harddrive. Should I just buy a new hardrive? any thing will help

Answer:Can't restore hardrive in rescue and recovery

which Thinkpad model do you have? You can run a hdd diagnostic from the BIOS, if it passes then your hdd should be fine, and it is more to do with the softwares on the hdd.

I had Rescue and Recovery going on a N100-0768 laptop using Vista Business.  Recently that laptop was stolen.  I've purchased a G550 with W7Pro.  Now I cannot install Rescue and Recovery 4.3 for W7 because apparently this G550 isn't in the list of supported Lenovo systems.  I need the critical data I've backed up - how do I access that data? Thanks so much in advance. I do miss the N100 - it was a great laptop!    - James Head

Answer:Rescue and Recovery - Need to restore data

Have the same problem myself, there is no available download for OneKey Recovery for WIn 7 64bit. I had the 32Bit RC Build 7100 installed previously and used the Vista version and it worked OK before, no such luck with the 64bit version. I'm irritated right now as I also need to back-up critical data, I'm using the Window back-up and Win Rescue disk but  it defeats the purpose of having the OneKey Recovery Key.

I used R&R once and after doing so, I reboot and come up with error message saying "Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:    \WINDOWS\system32\c_1252,nls You can attempt to repair this file by starting Windows Setup using the original Setup CD-ROM. Select 'r' at the first screen to start repair." Of course there is no original Setup CD-ROM with this computer.  I tried a Windows XP Professional CD from Microsoft and it cannot see any hard drive on my computer, so it will not work.   Is there a way to start over and re-install Windows??

Hi Guys I bought a set of Windows 7 64bit Lenovo Rescue and Recovery Discs approx. 18 months ago so I could "restore" my X201 if and when the hard disk died, well the day has come and the discs dont work !!! I have attempted to "restore" to the new hard disk 3 times and this is now starting to become a joke. I boot the 1st disk, then I'm asked to insert the 2nd and then 3rd disks, I dont have a 4th disk but the process asks me for one. I believe that this is all working as it takes a number of hours and the drive lights is flickering except when I'm being asked to insert the next disc. After the final re-boot. following the "Setting up drivers - 100%" on the screen I get a message box that says "Setup cant configure windows for your configuration", this is after I have had the "Starting Windows 7" booting on the screen. Has anyone had any experience with Win 7 64bit R & R discs for a X201 ??? TIA NG

Answer:Cant restore from rescue and recovery discs

Is your laptop configured for boot in legacy mode, not in UEFI?Also, Factory Recovery Discs set we make using Control Panel applet consists 4 discs (for x220, I don't know the clear information about x201) - 1 is bootable with WinRE environment and 3 with data. How do you boot your laptop for recovery process?

Hello, If I create a restore point using Vista, how do I access that using IBM Rescue and Recovery (R&R)? I recently had a situation where Vista would not boot-up and the only thing I could do is to use an old backup. Are Windows Vista backups available in R&R if Windows itself does not boot. It appears that a shelf version of Vista comes with Windows Recovery Environment that gives you access to the command prompt so you could edit the registry to delete any offending entries but I do not know how to get to the Windows Recovery Environment  within R&R and not having the Vista DVD. Thanks, Manish

I had to restore my system back to Factory state, prior to that I had the Rescue and Recovery option under Programs ThinkVantage menu, I also had the "Backup Now" option under the productivity center. After restoring to factory state I lost the Rescue and Recovery and the backup option.   I  would like to create a Recovery CD/DVD but now I cannot, I do not have the ability to do so, that is an option under the Rescue and Recovery Menu!.   - I am running Vista Business and my Thinkpad is a T60P  - Help  :-) Thank you LIliam

Answer:Rescue and Recovery Lost after Factory Restore

I think I have a similar issue, although I did not do a factory restore. I bought my T61 running Vista Home Premium this summer, and within a couple of months, the second entry under the Productivity Center's Quick Links is blank (actually, there is a bullet point with a few stray pixels just to its left). I think it may have been labelled Backup Now, because I can still click it and it will launch Rescue and Recovery. Not a critical bug, but annoying and the sort of thing I expected to avoid by purchasing from a top name in the business.

First, please forgive (and by all means gently correct) any protocol errors - I am a new poster to this forum. I am trying to restore files to a T60 which were backed up using R&R on a T420S. (Yes, my brand new T420S has turned into a brick - it won't power up and I am shortly going to return it to Lenovo for repair). Full backup was made to a partition on a USB hard drive prior to the failure. When  fire up R&R (v4.21) on the T60 (after plugging in the USB drive, obviously) and use the "Advanced" screen  R&Rcannot see any backup (even though Windows Explorer can see the partition and the RRbackups file). Is there a way to force R&R on my T60 to see the backup so that I can select files to restore? It may be relevant that I use R&R normally on my T60 to backup and it CAN see the backup made on THAT (different) USB hard drive. Many thanks if you can help

Answer:Rescue & Recovery - Restore files to a different machine

IF you made the usb drive a "recovery disk" then all you have to do is boot the T60 with the usb drive (press F12 on the Thinkpad start screen and select the usb drive). The usb drive will then run the R&R software. Once in the restore screen, select restore from backup. You will then have an opportunity to save the data files you want on the C: drive or any other drive you want. After saving the files just back out of R&R and restart normally. Good luck! PS. Backups made with different versions of R&R are not compatible, that's why the R&R in the T60 does not recognize what's on the usb drive.

Traveling with a 6-month old T61, Win XP-Pro.  Worked fine in Delhi.  Flew to Kathmandu.  Comes up with NTLDR is missing, hit CTRL-ALT-DEL to restart.  Used Rescue & Recovery (v.4)  to backup files onto a USB drive, then tried to restore the system from within the Rescue & Recovery pre-load workspace. The restore seemed to run succesfully.  But no luck - still comes up with NTLDR is missing.  What are my options at this point?

Answer:NTLDR is missing; Restore from Rescue & Recovery didn't fix

It looks as though your MBR is damaged and needs to be repaired. If you can get hold of a Windows XP cd you can boot from it and run the repair option, or, if you have acces to a floppy you could try the Rescue and Recovery repair disk

Answer:T420, No factory restore option in the rescue and recovery

'morning.
welcome to the forum!

assuming your pc came with a Lenovo Win7 installation on it, have you created your recovery disk set? if you haven't, click your Start orb and type recovery into the Search box. do you get an item named Create Recovery Media at the top of the list? if so, click it and follow the prompts to create your disk set. you can boot your pc with disk 1 of the set to completely reimage your pc back to its factory-delivered state. be aware that it will erase all personal files, so back things up first!

if you obtained your pc 2nd-hand, possibly with a generic Win7 install, you'll need to contact Service to obtain a factory recovery disk set.

Hi I have a T61p with XP that started freezing at the desktop, and in hopes to combat the situation to no avail I figured I would do a system restore. I was allready unhappy about this because the latest recovery date was back from May, which I found odd that it was that old considering the R&R folder takes up nearly 70g of my harddrive. Anyways, the System Restore froze up at 1%, and did not make any progression for 20 hours. Canceling would not close it, and I was forced to do a manual shutdown. My XP is now corrupted and will no longer boot windows. Any disks that did come with my computer (I dont actually remember any) are definately lost. I am posting this on my GF's computer, which is also a lenovo T61, not that im sure anything on her computer would help me. Any help that can be given would be much appreciated, I'm hoping there is some way to solve this without me having to take my computer somewhere.

I'll set the IBM Rescue and Recover password later.
There is a Warning:  If this window opened while you were installing software instead of while you were setting a Windows password, press the Cancel button now.  If you were not setting a Windows password, and you choose to continue, your action might prevent you from accessing your backups of the IBM Rescue and Recovery workspace.  Uless you were setting a Windows password, press Cancel now.

I purchased my T420 one year ago and have sufficiently "hosed it up" to the point I wanted to do a factory restore. I saved all my data then proceeded to create the CDs from the Q drive factory restore. I followed the instructs for more and more CDs and once I got up to #12 I noted that the time it was taking to create them was down from several minutes to several seconds. When I got to CD number 18 I thought "this is ridicules" and I popped CD 11 back in to look at its content (via Windows Explorer). I noted it had two folders: 1) Factory restore (or something like that) which was over 500 MB in size and 2) something about data. This "data" folder contained 1 KB of data. I then looked at all subsequent CDs (12-18) and they all only contained this data file. So, rather than continuing to make these (basically empty CDs) I stopped.I then put the first CD in and rebooted the machine. The factory restore started and I swapped CDs until I got to 12. I put 12 in and it said the required data was not present and to insert the next CD. I did this until I ran out of the CDs I had created. I had to "X" out of the restore app and now when I boot I get nothing but a dimly lit screen and a flickeringhard drive light! Am I totally hosed here? How many CDs would it have required had I kept making them?I am ( obviously) a novice. Any help would be greatly appreciated.Tom

Answer:T420, No factory restore option in the rescue and recovery

Hi Tom, welcome,

As you've discovered, it's a better choice to use DVDs for this.  Actually 1 CD and then 2 or 3 DVDs.  Too late for that

You have a couple of choices: call support and order a set of recovery media or do a clean install from Microsoft media.

Support will probably charge for the media.  You can use Microsoft Win 7 (this is a win 7 machine ???) install media - either borrowed or downloaded - and activate with the CoA key on the sticker on your machine.  Probably in the battery compartment.  Use media that matches the install already on your laptop.  Probably Win 7 Pro.

Google "legal windows 7 download notebook review" for links to ISOs.  Burn _as an image_ to DVD.   Once it's installed install ThinkVantage Sytem Update and let it pull down the drivers and apps for your machine.

My backups have been done with version 2.04.0182 but I don't see it on Lenovo's web site to download.  I've received the Recovery disk set twice, but apparently missing the disk that includes R&R to be put into a partition area before running disks 1-4.  Anyway, is there a way to download the above version of R&R? Thanks, in advance---

Answer:Getting earlier version of Rescue and Recovery with Rapid Restore 2.x

The first disk of the set of 4 is the boot disc, there weren't separate boot discs when the R40 was current. It should actually state "bootable" on the disc. Using the discs wil totally erase the hard drive including all files etc. and return the system to factory state.

I have just bought a pre-owned Think Pad X201-3680-FZ2 laptop with Windows 7 professional, and for my own peace of mind wanted to restore it to factory settings before I start using it. There are no recovery disks so I have downloaded the Rescue & Recovery 4.52 Setup but when I run the programme it gets to a certain point and then I receive the error message Error 25014. There was an error installing the Rescue and Recovery boot manager.  Return code: 6 I have searched for a solution to this problem online, and see that I am not alone, but the responses I find either do not seem to apply to me as the other programmes mentioned are not installed, or I do not understand them. I am not a computer expert, just a domestic / home office user, so need a solution in very easy to understand terms.  The Think Pad I have came with no instruction manuals, and as far as I can see, all the programmes installed relate to the operation of the Think Pad itself.  There does not seem to be Rescue & Recovery already installed on the ThinkPad.Does anyone have a solution to this which they could explain to me in simple terms, please?

Hi, I have problem deleting old backups with Rescue and Recovery - always when I try to delete them, it seems working, but it's not, it never finishes... I tried to delete just one of all backups, only the last or only the oldest one or all of them together, but with no effect. I have 6 backups of about 45GB together. And by the way R&R doesn't work well at all - also when I click on Optimize backup storage space, it doesn't work... Possibly it is normal that when deleting old backups, computer seems freezing and it takes very long time, but I'm not sure if it ever ends. I have R61 with WinXP Pro SP3, R&R last version 4.21.0016. Is there any solution? Thanks a lot!V.K.

Hi guys. I have a backup of my system, with all useful programs installed and documents loaded. This is stored in an external hard drive. Now, my system was hanging frequently, after a botched disk defragmentation attempt. After trying to repair my system through checkdisk, scandisk and others, I restored my system from the aforementioned backup. Now, I donot remember the password of the backup system. I searched online, and Microsoft says that you have to reinstall XP and wipe out everything. This can only be done by choosing the "Restore Hard Drive to Original Factory state" option in the Thinkpad rescue and recovery program. My Z61T came with an 80 GB hard drive. Later, I put in a 500 GB hard drive, and partitioned it into many partitions, the main one is C:\ which is the XP partition, which is 79 GB in capacity. The aforementioned backup is of the 80 GB hard drive. Now, my question is that if I choose " restore to original factory state", will all the partitions in the 500 GB hard drive be wiped out?

Answer:Z61T Rescue and Recovery (restore factory to original settings)

My laptop is 9440 CTO S/N L3 AN*(* The backup that is being spoken of, is a full backup, of Windows XP, essential programs and files, made using the Rescue and Recovery center. It is stored in an external USB drive.

I want to restore my system to original factory state, and I have the Rescue and Recovery discs I made when I first obtained the laptop.  I put the disk labeled ?Rescue and Recovery Startup disk? into DVD drive and start system.  When ThinkPad logo appears, I touch the blue ThinkVantage button.  When the system prompts me to press any key to boot from CD or DVD, I do so, and Rescue and Recovery program starts. After the Rescue & Recovery Program is loaded, I click ?Launch Advanced Rescue and Recovery.?  Then I click ?Restore Your System.?  Based on the Rescue and Recovery Help documents, I expect to see three options: Restore only Windows operating system and applications from backupRestore my entire hard drive, including all personal data and settings from backupRestore my hard drive to original factory state. However, only the first two options are displayed.I don?t know how to restore the system without the third option.  Any advice? Thanks!!

Answer:SL510--Factory Restore option not available in Rescue & Recovery Program

Hi and welcome to the forum!

ThinkPad can also be put to factory contents without the recovery discs if the restore partition is available on the system. Take the CD out, restart your system and press the ThinkVantage button on boot, thereafter follow instructions from step 5:- http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?sitestyle=lenovo&lndocid=MIGR-70803

Re recovery discs, is it possible that you created rescue media (backup) of your system instead of recovery discs? Go to the BIOS and set optical drive as first boot device, put the startup recovery disc in, press F10 to save the settings and exit, don't press ThinkVantage button on boot, instead let it boot itself from the CD, once you're in, look for the third option.

Let us know how things go.

So, in a nutshell, I have been bitten by the Bluetooth uninstall bug that has completely trashed my Windows 7 boot partition.  I tried to install the latest version and near the end of installation, it threw up an error message and then rolled back.  Upon reboot, i had an error message coming up about bluetooth.  So, I tried again to update but same error.  So, i figured I would uninstall the current installed version and then install the new version.  Well, uninstalling the old version blew out my drive by deleting just about everthing that was in the partition.  Of course, after the uninstall it stated i need to reboot for changes to take effect.  When I rebooted, threw up a black screen with message about corruption and to put in windows 7 disk and try and repair.  That didn't work (obviously as most of my files are gone). I have a parttion on the drive with Win XP Pro and that will boot but the version of Rescue and Recovery under XP will not load the backups that were created under Windows 7 and R&R v. 4.3.1. So, my question is, how do i restore my backup on the Windows 7 partition?  Do i need to reinstall from the Win 7 disk to the Windows 7 partition and then install R&R 4.3.1 and then run and restore from the backup or is there some other easier way I can run a version of R&R v.4.3.1 to do a restore. Any and all help greatly appreciated. Thanks. Dan

Answer:How can I run Rescue and Recovery to restore Partition that was blown out by Bluetooth uninstall

I think you can hit F11 at POST to boot into the R&R environment, where it should let you restore from an existing backup. You can also consider running a file recovery tool on the drive to try and recover some files.

And Refresh is unable to correct issue.
But Dell Backup and Recovery indicates no issues were found and now asks to Reinstall Operating System.
is Installation Restore/Original Image Media required to complete the Reinstallation usind Dell Backup and Recovery?
Alternatively if the Reset My PC option is used is Installation media required?

Is there any other way to access the R&R from boot? and what's the unattend answer file anyway?I'm trying to go to rescue and recovery from boot because my windows wouldn't load. It shows this message: "Windows could not parse or process unattend answer file [C:Windows\Panther]unattend.xml]. The answer file is invalid" I want to reinstall windows anyway so I tried going to the R and R page from boot: pressing the Thinkvantage button when it say "to interrupt normal setup... etc." I pressed the button and the message disappears, but it doesn't lead to the R & R page, it just starts windows normally. F8 leads only to more options of loading windows, like safe mode, etc. but non of them works because of the "unattend answer" file. How do I go to R&R if not through the thinkvantage button? What is unatend answer file anyway?

Hello Everybody! This is my first post, and I am very-very sad that I must use Lenovo forums, however I had approximately 20 ThinkPads / IdeaPads in my life ... but never any model with a SLOT LOADING DVD drive (this will be the key problem). I thought this is one of the best technology ever, just pushing into, and do not have to worry that the tray may be broken. My actual Lenovo ThinkPad notebook is: Lenovo ThinkPad Edge E420s 4401-7PG (bought at 15.06.2013) Well, after buying I quickly made a full Recovery.1xboot - CD is enough here (approx. 350MB)3xdata - DVD. For some reason the Factory defaults on HDD was not working properly, because I always had to use a Windows disc for repairing boot partitions automatically. I don't know why unfortunately, but MBR / active / boot / etc... was not proper for some reason.  So I had the second option to do full factory recovery by using the discs I have made previously. After powering up the machine, I have pressed F11. I have chosed to restore from CD/DVD to reset to Factory default. For the first disc it was okay, it did until 1/3 of the whole process, and than ...I was not able to change disc, because EJECT button is not working!!!  I have even tried to push emergency hole button on the bottom ... no results. Nothing. The disc just did not wanted to come out for replacing it to DISC2. I was staring at this beautiful picture:  Because I was during the process, now I do not have ... Read more

The Windows 7 key on the laptop sticker will work with an off-the-shelf Windows 7 retail install ISO/DVD/etc, including the newer SP1 ISO's. http://www.w7forums.com/official-windows-7-sp1-iso-image-downloads-t12325.html The easiest way to re-install Windows 7 for me has been via USB flash drive, ESPECIALLY with UEFI on my W530 which applies to the T520 as well; here's the short list of commands to run through: run (Win+R) Diskpartlist diskselect disk Xcleancreate partition primaryactiveformat fs=fat32 quickassignNote you'll need to figure out what number to put for X: In my W530 it's 3 because slots 0, 1, and 2 are the SSD, CD/DVD bay caddy, and internal hard drives respectively, so the USB flash drive ends up slot 3. That done, copy ALL the contents of the .ISO for your version to the flash drive. 7-zip, WinRAR, use your tool of choice to extract the contents of the ISO entirely. Next, go make a folder (in my case it's Drivers) and download ALL the drivers for your ThinkPad to there before you forget.  Now, copy \efi\microsoft\boot up a level on the flash drive, so there's \efi\boot as well. You need to keep \efi\microsoft\boot existing as well though, so copy don't move. Finally, copy the C:\Windows\Boot\EFI\bootmgfw.efi file from an existing Windows 7 install to \efi\boot\bootx64.efi on the flash drive. Now when you reboot you should be able to install from that flash drive as a clean install, and get a UEFI install as well instead o... Dear community collegues, I have installed original windows7 home premium in my lenovo N100 series 0768-54A model y'day. Though every thing went well, the AC97 audio driver could not be installed. Can any one provide me a solution to make the audio working in Windows7 Home Premium. Similarly after new installation, I could not install rescue and recovery version 4.3 (windows7 compatible) in to the system, every attempt failed. Could any one provide a solution. thanking You. Sakthivelu V M Chennai

Answer:problem in audio driver and unable to install rescue and recovery ver 4.3 -

I am not sure which audio chipset your N100 has, soTry this for sound: Go to THIS web page.Download Soundmax audio driver for Vista.Extract the files by double clicking, and note where theyare being extracted to. Uninstall any sound driver you have installed, reboot. If windows says New Hardware Found, click cancel. Go to folder where downloaded drivers were extracted, and run Setup. If Soudmax drivers do not work, uninstall and repeatwith the Realtek audio drivers. I do not think Rescue/Recovery will work except forthe originally installed OS.

Hi All, I just bought a new Ideacenter All-In-One B310 shipped with Windows 7 Home Premium, but my excitement is fast dying out. I am trying to create Recovery Disc using the "Lenovo Rescue System 3.0" however, it keeps failing when the recovery procedure reaches 43% with the following Notice - "An internal program error has occurred. Failed: error code 0xEB1B068A" A quick google check and review of this forum gave me some instances where people repartitioned their volumes to face similar error and restoring it back to their original volume sizes has resolved the issue. However, I haven't repartitioned anything out here and am just trying to create the rescue disk as the first step of the shipped product to me. I have tried it creating 4 times and have literally wasted 4 of my DVDs that get ejected at this very point. Please suggest what is the way out here. Best Regards,AbhiShiku

My T60P 8744-C9U hard drive died.  Test: BIOS encounters read errors when doing a  test - WinXP boot cd cannot find C drive. But fortunately I did frequent backups to a USB external drive .... hum.....So - HOW DO I RESTORE THE DATA FROM THE USB EXTERNAL DRIVE THAT WAS CREATED WITH R&R onto my other computer so I can work - a desktop - Quad XP 64 - not a Lenovo product !!!

Answer:Rescue and Recovery - How do I restore data to another comptr since my laptop hard drive crashed???

You're not going to be able to do a complete restoration onto a totally different computer, but you should be able to connect your external drive to the desktop and retrieve specific files and folders.

The only way to do a complete restoration is to get a new drive for the T60, download R&R and restore from the backup, unless you burned recovery discs, then you could restore from those and then use the backup.

My SL410 was infected by virus (i guess) and turned into blue screen. The blue screen indicated the laptop was dumping the physical memory and then restarted. Hence, after rebooted I could only access to the very first screen with Thinkpad logo , Win 7 logo, then back to the blue screen. No way to get into Win 7 save mode and no response on the blue recovery button. I used my Rescue & Recovery CD that i created a couple month before and was able to save all my data... but when i wanted to restore my laptop back to a previous state/year . it only completed step 1 of 2, but after rebooting went back to the blue screen... so step 2 was not able to begin... am i doing something wrong ? i do not understand why step 2 is not going through

I recently had my computer crash, I suspect it was to do with a virus as I'd been using Limewire earlier that day. Anyway, I now can't start up the computer, upon powering on I'll get to the screen asking me to choose between the options, Start windows normally, start with previous settings that worked and start with safe mode.  I've tried starting with all three of them but each just leads me onto the loading screen where it will attempt to load for about twenty seconds then flash up a blue screen  for a second and restart itself. I tried to access rescue and recovery to see if I could fix the issue but it just fails to load at the introduction screen with the life belt. Does anyone know of anyway I could fix this?

Answer:Blue Screen at Start up, can't access rescue and recovery.

Hi,welcome to the forums Just a thought, you also get an option called "directory restore services mode" when you press F8 during startup,it worked out for me most of the times when i get a BSOD,check out that option.

Good morning - I unfortunately had to use the IBM Rescue and Recovery feature to restore my factory settings.  However, now my computer is giving me a blue screen error during the startup process.  Unfortunately it is not on the screen long enough for me to get too much information from it, but I have been able to get win22n51.sys as being some sort of error message.  If I start the computer in safe mode it will load without the error.  If I use the safe mode plus networking it gives the error.  So I'm assuming it has something to do with the network drivers? I would appreciate any ideas you all have for resolving/further diagnosing this problem. Thank you!

Hi,
I have my daughter's computer here, trying to fix it. She's a single mom with not much money so she has no way of taking it in and having it fixed. It started shutting down with a blue screen with a bunch of writing on it that shut down too fast to read. I caught page fault and memory dump. I tried to restore to an earlier date, but it wouldn't do it. I tried a system recovery, and it still did it. I did a full system restore and now after it installs...when it goes to reboot...it goes to the boot options i.e. safe mode, last known good configuration, etc. It does it over and over. Sometimes that blue screen with all the writing will pop up before it reboots. Any suggestions, short of shooting it and burying it, would be much appreciated. She was so excited that her sister gave her the computer and now this!

Thanks,
Molly

Answer:Full System Recovery Then Rebooting And Rebooting And Rebooting.....

Without being able to see the error message, it's hard to tell. But I'd guess it's one of two things: either the hard drive is too full or a piece of hardware, such as a drive or sound card or something, has failed. If the hard drive is too full and there isn't enough RAM to load Windows into, it tries to swap some data over to the hard drive, but being no room, it simply shuts down and dumps the memory. There are things that can possibly be done for this, but more info is needed. If you have upgraded Windows from an earlier version, and the system is a FAT 32 system, you can get in and delete files with a Windows boot disk, such as from Windows 98. Sometimes, you can start the system with something like Ultimate Boot Disk, which uses a scaled-down Linux operating system, and then use included tools to delete or move files.

If a device has failed, the only way to troubleshoot it is to remove devices. If you get lucky, you can find the bad one.

When you restored Windows, I'm guessing you did an over-the-top reinstall, and didn't lose any data, is that right? Or did you do a complete wipe and restore?

I picked up three thinkpad t60p units second hand from my university's surplus auction, but per their policy the hard drives were totally wiped (including all partitions). I have looked up the FRU part numbers (43T8618 & 46V2346) here and wish to purchase the cds & dvds as spare parts. I tried to enter the part numbers here but it said the part could not be found in the database. I then tried calling the phone number on that page (1-800-765-5944), but I kept on getting bumped around to different numbers. I DO NOT wish to pay for a tech support call, I just want to order the parts! In fact I can't call support at all since they require a serial number but I do not have a way to get this information. This is due to the fact that the bios have been password protected but I do not have the bios password (the surplus guys have no clue), the stickers on the bottom having seen better days (serial number is not legible on two and only partially legible on the last), and obviously there is no OS to boot into. The only information I have is the model number (8741-CTO) and the operating system that was on them prior to the wipe (two were xp professional and one was vista ultimate). Anyway, I'm not concerned about trying to get this covered under warranty, as I am prepared to pay for the parts, if only I could actually order them! Please, somebody from lenovo, how the heck do I order these parts?

I just bough a new ThinkPad T530 with Windows 8 64bit. I was playing around with it a bit, installing different applications but then decided to do a factory reset in order to get a clean machine again. I entered the recovery utility (F11 on boot) and Windows 8 recovery utility was started and I selected the "Reset Your PC". When the action started the application asked me for installation media WHICH WAS NOT PROVIED by lenovo. After that I went back to Windows 8 and tried to make a Rescue and Recovery Disk using the Windows 8 feature but I again got the same message asking me to insert the installation disks for Windows 8. I see that my machine has the 2 Recovery Partitions, so my question is WHY CAN'T I RESTORE MY PC TO FACTORY SETTING USING THE PARTITIONS ON DISK???

Hi all, I've created both a dvd set and an usb key with the recovery media with . When testing these media on a blank hard disk I'm unable to get a factory state or anything for that matter restored. Both DVD's and USB key are bootable and contain the large wim files. But windows keeps asking for a backup image. Any insight on how to restore the factory state on a blank hard disk? This is Windows 7 x64 prof factory installed on a new T440P The tool I've used is called "Lenovo - Factory Recovery Disks" in the control panel (c:\program files (x86)\lenovo\factory recovery\recovburncd.exe" and offers both an usb key and dvd's as medium. I've created both. You can also start either from the q: drive or from the Lenovo Solution Center System tab the "Lenovo Factory Backup Partition Information" tool. But that launches the afore mentioned tool when asked to create recovery media. When a blank harddrive is installed and the recovery media is booted I cannot restore anything. If I start the recovery media with F8 whetever option I choose, like safe mode with command prompt, I always end with message box titled "System Recovery Options" telling me it cannot find a recovery image. Much appreciated, Wes

How are you attempting to do this?  If you've put a blank disk in the laptop, how is Windows even a factor here? Restore programs are generally self-contained and run on boot before Windows ever loads.
