Lenovo x230 Network configuration issue

Question: Lenovo x230 Network configuration issue

Hello all, I have serious network configuration issue (including both, WiFi and Ethernet). When I enter IPv4 configuration, next time I open again the configuration page, the settings are put into automatic mode (so no pre-entered IPs there). But ipconfig shows the entered IPs. Some times ipconfig also show 3 or 4 different gateways, but opening the Network adapters configuration page, all is set to automatic, so I put it into manual mode, then again to automatic mode and disable + enable adapter, then it'll go to dhcp. This issue is really annoying, I had it before the clean install, it worked some time after reinstall, but now the issue came back again. Using Windows 8.1 ProAll drivers are up-to-date. Any help is really, really appriciated,Thanks in advance,Kunnar

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi there I posted this on another forum, but thought it might get more of a response on the lenovo forum, so apologies if anyone has read this before.I need a new laptop soon, my T60 is on its last legs, but has lasted a great length of time. I am considering buying either the x220 or the x230, but I live in the UK and the X230 is only available with 2 processor options, the i5 3210 or else the i7. The latter makes it considerably more expensive and probably is too much for what I need. Lenovo is also not letting me upgrade the screen from the default option, as the upgrade is the 3 x 3 antenna (?) so I can't get the webcam.I was originally going to really spec up the 220 and go for that, but I have heard about screen warping problems (my other half has a t400s and has been plagued by the chassis cracking at the palm rests) so I want to avoid that. I know all the other major X220 problems such as throttling have been fixed, one of the benefits of getting a tried and tested machine.I guess my question really is which one should I buy... I am not a gamer, I will be using it for running SPSS, a statistics package; watching movies and streaming etc.Would I be better getting the sale price on the 220 now or do I wait to see if the x230 has more configurations for the uk in the next couple of months? (does lenovo usually increase the options for configuration?) I don't want to lost a good deal on the 220.What do I do? I am very confused! Many thanks for your helpAlison

Answer:X230 options in the UK - does lenovo release more choices for configuration?

alisonkay wrote: I was originally going to really spec up the 220 and go for that, but I have heard about screen warping problems I think the X220 and X230 use exactly all the same screen parts, and therefore susceptible to the same problems. I've had my X220 for over a year and haven't had any warping problem.

My in-laws share a business location with a friend. They also share an internet connection. The current network setup is as follows:

Charter cheapo rented cable modem
|
V
Linksys BEFSR41 Routers (Primary business owner) -> desktop & POS
{
V
ASUS RT-N13U -> Desktop & laptop

The store has a 16Mbps connection. The systems connected to the Linksys have no problems whatsoever hitting high speeds. The computers connected via the ASUS router average 80kbps on a good day. I have also tested the connection with an old SMC B/G router and my DL-4300 router that i use at home. No matter what router is being used, the 2nd tier systems get crap bandwidth.

The BEFSR41 configuration system is so basic I can't seem to do squat. The same download speed issue occurs no matter which port the ASUS is plugged in to.

Both parties want this resolved as inexpensively as possible. What should I do to get this anywhere close to working well?

Answer:Network configuration issue is driving me batty

Buy a cheapo 5-port Netgear switch and put it it directly after the modem, then plug the WAN/internet port of each router into that switch. Should resolve your issues.

Hello,

I faced a strange issue on wireless network configuration after doing a clean install of Windows 8.1.
I succeeded to find a workaround that maybe helpfull for others but I am still interested to read an explanation of this issue.
So as indicated above, I made a clean install of windows 8.1 pro on a brand new PC I built up myself featuring a Gigabyte Wifi/BT PCI-e card (GC-WB300D) . After the install, the wifi connection from my home router was immediately detected and I saw the icon and indication on the bottom right of the screen "network available" then I right click on it and a bar on the left of my screen appeared. I click in the side bar on the network icon I was willing to connect and I was prompted to enter my login and password rather than the wifi security key so of course the connection to my (home) wifi network failed as the security key was never configured for this connection. I opened up the network and sharing center to find a menu item to configure my connection by keying th security key without success. I worked around this issue by creating a new connection using the same SSID of the connection already detected automatically by windows as there is a field in this menu to enter the security key.
Any explanation ?

Hi,

I have recently purchased several Edimax Homeplugs (2 x *HP-2001AV' and 1 x 'HP-2002AV') and I am having problems configuring my homeplug network. I was wondering if my network configuration should work or if it is a limitation of the home plug and I need to look for an alternative solution.

I have cable (fibre optic) internet connecting to a Router, which is connected to Homeplug A.

I have Homeplug B in a different room connected to a Switch, which is connected to several Computers all of which can access the Internet concurrently (this appears to work).

My problem is with Homeplug C (based in another room). I want to connect this to another Router that will provide Wireless access to that region of the building. If I plug a PC/laptop directly into Homeplug C then it has Internet connectivity, however if I connect it to a router it doesn't appear to have any Internet access.

Should this work or is this some kind of limitation to the home plugs?

Any information you can provide to help me resolve this issue is greatly appreciated.

Thanks

I am leaning towards buying a Lenovo thinkpad x230 with 6 cell main battery as well as a 44++ 9 cell battery and a 19+ six cell battery configuration (6 +9+6 cell battery configuration). My queries are1. Can all three of the batteries work in conjunction without any issues?2. Do i need to charge the batteries separately or they all get charged simultaneously while i plug a charger in the laptop?3. Is there any other battery option ( like a 9 cell main plus a 44++ 9 cell and a 19+ 6 cell, i.e. 9+9+6 cells) that can work ?

I just purchased a brand new Lenovo G585 laptop and after I powered it on for the first time, I tried to connect to the internet wirelessly but I only saw the Ethernet option under network connections in the control panel and not the wireless LAN or WIFI option. I looked to see if any drivers were installed correctly and I believe they were. I manually downloaded the wireless LAN driver and installed it. It said that it was already installed but I still performed a overwrite and continued to install it. After it was finish, a warning popup came up and it said "No appropriate driver to be installed." I wasn't able to figure it out on my own what the problem may be so I contacted the Lenovo tech support and they did a remote session. They basically did the same thing I was doing when I tried to figure out the problem. Also, I went into the BIOS menu and saw that the Wireless LAN Support was enabled so the representative told me that it shouldn't be a hardware issue, it'll most likely be a software issue. He couldn't figure it out either so they told me to call the premium tech support which handles the software issues and they'll help you solve the problem but I've contacted them and I wasn't told by the Lenovo tech support representative that I would need to sign up for some subscription to get help from them. No thanks. So I guess I'm on my own with this and I hope it's not a hardware issue. Anyone have any ideas what could be the problem?

I have been unable to connect to my NAS, a Synology DS216+II.  I've been working with ATT (Router), Synology (NAS), and Microsoft to try and figure out why I can't connect to my NAS while connected to my routers 2.4GHz radio, but can connect through the routers 5.0 GHz radio.  The problem is associated with only one computer a Lenovo T460.  My other computers a Lenovo T520 and a Lenovo T430 will connect to the NAS on either radio, as will my iPhone or ipad.  What I have discovered if I reset the Router (a ARRIS 5268AC - ATT Uverse) I can connect to the NAS via the 2.4GHz radio, if I switch to the 5.0GHz radio the connect works, but if I revert back to the 2.4 GHz radio again I can't reconnect to the NAS? Any ideas?JSR

hi - am having the issue with my g570(4334) and windows 7 laptop. I removed both atheros drivers(the funny thing is i didnt notice what was those drivers), now struggling to connect to wireless though managed to get LAN driver installed. Tried installing intel wifi link driver and wimax is not helping me and it shows there is no suitable driver version of wireless network adapter compatible, i searched for wireless network adapter suitable for my laptop in lenovo support but no use, cudnt find it there. Now i came across this, should i go ahead and install Atheros AR9285 Wireless network adapter and try again? also let me know which driver should i install to support this adapter? Also let me know if there is a link between Ethernet adapter already installed in my laptop to this adapter(i have AR8151/8158 Family Gigabit/PCI Fast ethernet controller)? It would be of great help if u can assist as am cracking my head past two days to fix this with no proper response from lenovo call center also! Thanks in Advance.

Answer:Lenovo G570 Wireless network adapter issue

Hi naveen2184,

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

This AR8151/8158 Family Gigabit/PCI Fast ethernet controller is LAN Device and not wireless.

Try opening device manager and look under Network Adapters if you will see wifi or wireless under it,
ex.

If not Look for any unknown device or Network Controller or any Yellow marked icon

Once you find either wifi , network controller or unknown device
right click on it and select properties

You will have a properties windows with tabs on top
Select the details TAB , select Hardware Id on the property and copy the value

Once you got the hardware Id try posting it here
Lets check what device is that and find the right drivers

Regards
Solid Cruver

So here is a new one:  I have a Yoga 910 that has had many networking issues. It appears that if I unplug the computer from my USB-C dock (the dock still has power), the dock network connection freezes my router. This is repeatable, and annoying. As soon as I powered down the dock (by unplugging it), the router starts working. I am using an ASUS RT-AC5300 "mother of all routers" (when I bought it), and it has been rock solid until I started with my new Yoga. It is running the latest firmware, and I have updated the firmware on the dock as well. Ideas?

I bought this 21.5 inch touch-screen all-in-one computer for my kitchen counter top a few days ago from best buy.

Here is the link:

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/lenovo-21-5-touch-screen-all-in-one-computer-intel-pentium-4gb-memory-1t...

The experience has not been very good. Right after reboot, this computer gets a fantastic wifi download speed at around 40Mbps.

But as time goes by, the wifi speed drops and drops and drops to something like 0.5Mbps to 5mps.

I tested through speedtest.net.

So, I often times have to reboot in order to get a better WIFI speed. But then as time goes by, the connection speed drops and drops.

Please note that the same does not happen to my macbook pro at the same location, it always gets 40 to 60Mbps.

I've done a little research online, and some people suggest that I uninstall some Lenovo proprietary software, which I did, but it didn't help at all.

The network adapter is realtek 8821ae wireless lan 802.11ac pci-e nic.

If this is easily fixable, I'd rather keep it. Otherwise, I am returning it to Best Buy.

Any idea? Thanks.

When your laptop does not connect to network (trying acquiring network address unsuccessfully), then it is very likely that the winsock has been corrupted. Go to start/run, type cmd, you then have to get to the c prompt, type "netsh winsock reset", restart the computer, and it should work...hope it will cure your problem as it did for mine...note that this issue happened right after having installed an automatic update for win XP.... netsh winsock reset is useful command that you can use in Microsoft Windows to reset winsock catalog back to default setting or clean state. You can try this if you are having following Internet access or networking problems but still failing to resolve the problem after trying all other suggestions.

You can do two things: 1. Go to Windows Anytime Upgrade and purchase the Pro feature. This is the easiest way to upgrade, but it costs a small amount to do this. 2. Try booting from the Windows 7 DVD and see if it will let you start it and install the upgrade. You will need the license key from the Windows 7 DVD to do this. ... JDH

Question: Lenovo X230 setup

Hi, everyone,A quick question. I have an x230 on the way and am looking to set up my workspace in a specific way. Here is what I want: an external monitor that will allow me to move the cursor from the laptop screen to the other monitor. So, in essence, a dual monitor set-up but with the laptop screen as one of the monitors. I would also like to be able to use a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse while in this set-up. Do I need the UltraSeries 3 dock, or something else? Thanks!Parker

Answer:Lenovo X230 setup

Hi, Parker

You should be able to accomplish this without a docking station. The X230 supports a dual independent display and has a VGA port and a Mini DisplayPort. So if you have a monitor with one of these connections and hook it up to your laptop, then it should work. You will need to make sure that you Extend the display and not Duplicate it. Duplicate will give you the same image on both screens. You can just use Win + P to set it appropriately.

As for the Bluetooth keyboard and mouse, you should have no issues here either. Provided Bluetooth is turned on in the system and you have compatible Bluetooth peripherals, it should work like a charm once they've been paired.

Hope it helps,
Adam

I would wan to find out if I can install  mSATA SSD 128gb into the x230 and main harddrive as a storage?

Solved!

Go to Solution.

Answer:Lenovo Think Pad x230 and mSATA SSD

Hi, odessit

This should be possible. There is a slot for an mSATA drive in the X230, as shown here. Also shown in that link is that an mSATA is a user-replaceable part. After purchasing your SSD, then all you will need to do is install it per the instructions here (pp. 70) Also, you will likely need to download this firmware update after installing the drive. This will allow the BIOS to recognize the SSD if you plan to use it as the C: drive of the system. The update can be found here.

Hope it helps,
Adam

Dear all, I jsut got a x240 and really liked the QuickConnect app from Lenovo, which works great for my job (I can use my Android phone as a remote presenter, keyboard, etc.). I was wondering if I can install quick connect in my x230. I know that Lenovo says it's only for the x240, but since it connects via Bluetooth, I don't see why it wouldn't work with the X230. Hi All! I'm sorry to sound like a bit of a newb here, but i'm looking for a little bit of assistance with my x230 laptop.  I bought the laptop back in september with windows 7 professional.  A couple months later, I upgraded to windows 8 only to not really like it too much and decide for now I want to revert back to Windows 7.  Not knowing what my options were, I installed Windows 7 Ultimate back on the machine through an external cd drive, but now I'm missing about 100gb from my main drive, I ordered a 500gb 7200 rpm drive but now I only have about 350 GB available after the clean install.  I wasn't too sure how the recovery options on the x230 worked.  I see that next to my main C drive, there is another drive there located "Recovery" It has about 75% of the disk space being taken up but there is absolutely nothing within the actual drive when I actually click it.  It's probably too late, but is there any way to actually take my laptop back to the way it was when I first bought it? I only ask because it seems there's something on that recovery drive but I just can't figure out what it is.  I would appreciate any help at all, I'm sorry for sounding like such a newb with this stuff!

Answer:Lenovo x230 Recovery

Hi, Flyerfan16

If you are viewing your drives in Disk Management, how big is the Recovery partition? The partitions from Lenovo are normally between 7 GB and 10 GB when the machine ships. If the original partition is still on the drive, then you should be able to recover to the settings when the machine was first purchased.

You can attempt recovery by starting the machine as normal and then pressing Enter repeatedly to interrupt startup. A menu should then appear, with an option available to recover your system. Press the associated key for this action and then follow the prompts. If all works well, you should be able to go back to the way it was. If you choose this option, make sure to back up all files that you wish to keep that are currently on the system.

Hope it helps,
Adam

Hello,So, first of all, I'm not english, so I'm sorry for the following mistakes.Let's start.1 year ago I've bought a lenovo x230 netbook with Windows 8, intel core i7 + 8 gb ram + SSD. [still using these specs]Okay. After 1 month of usage, the display started to have some problems. From the left to right, the 3/7 part of the display is changing in all the colors while using. It depends on what color is the page opened. If it's white, this part of the display is black with some "running" white lines, if it's blue - red and so on.No problem ; acording to the warranty, the display has been changed. It was ok.Since august 2014 I didn't use the laptop again. I started using it in April 2015. In may, the display started to have that problem again, but I've read on your forum that I need to put the display on 60Hz and on High performance mode to fix it, and that's what I did. At the beggining of June, the problem was back, and it is still on 60Hz and high performance mode.3 days ago, my laptop started to make another problem ; CHARGING.It doesn't want to charge.  If I just plug in, it stays with the battery on 0%, and it doesn't open because of the missing electricity, but I've realised something. If I move the end of the charger [near the part which get into that yellow circle where the end of the charger must be, hope you understand] higher than 10-15 CMs it DOES charge. But now it doesn't charge even if I put it in the position I've said before. If laptop will boot go to BIOS setup, press F9 and save default settings, set and save your settings. If that actions will not resolve the issue I'm afraid you have to contact with Lenovo support.

Realized I posted this in the wrong place and it really belongs here I decided to look around to make sure my computer was even able to run an external GPU and found I have hit a wall. I flashed my BIOS to the newest version (like 2.67 or something?) but my TOLUD is 3.5 GB (dfa00000). I thought the BIOS update was supposed to fix this? I only have 8GB of RAM so the 16GB problem shouldn't affect me either? Anyone know what might be wrong? When reading some forums I saw that people who updated their BIOS were able to fix their problem as long as they only had 8 gigs of ram, which is why im confused I still have DFA00000. Will it still work regaurdless of this? I thought the update was supposed to fix this.

i have upgraded  X230 harddrive and installed OS from Backup, my fingerprint did work fine after upgrade for 3 month after that fingerprint just started giving error  E7210005 (cannot enrolluser, cannot update passport, cannot find finger print sensor), but in the device mananger panel it show that it is workng properly, when i open biometrics in control panel it shows that my device is not availabe.(i have also allowed fingerprint port in the bios). i reinstalled windows, update finger print drivers and software (from lenovo and also tried the ones from original manufacture-Authen tech). i tried to change the group policy setting, and also created new user wit admin privillages and also enabled all the sevice settings. but the problem error remains the same, it has been a moth now trying to search for solution but still nothing has come up. wat worries me is that the device manger shows that the FP device is working properly

Answer:Lenovo X230 FingerPrint Error

If you re-installed Windows and this problem still happens, I'd say there's a strong possibility that your fingerprint sensor has failed and needs to be replaced.  Even if the device looks OK in Device Manager, this really doesn't mean much.  All it means is that Windows can talk to the USB device that hosts the fingerprint sensor, but the fingerprint sensor itself could still be malfunctioning.

Some things that can help confirm hardware problem:
1.  Shut the system off, does fingerprint green LED flash slowly?  If so it means that the sensor contains some fingerprint templates so lets try to clear them.
2.  Turn the system on and press F1 to enter BIOS setup
3.  Go to the Security menu and choose Fingerprint, then clear the fingerprint sensor.  You should see a message about success or failure.  Failure definitely means HW problem.
4.  If you see a message about success clearing the fingerprint sensor from BIOS, then shut the system off again.  The green LED should not be flashing anymore because you cleared the sensor in BIOS.  If the green LED still flashes, then it means HW problem because the fingerprint templates were not really cleared.

So try the above steps to try to confirm the HW problem, or just call service in your country and request help.

I've bought the Lenovo X230 with the broken battery (the PM showes 68% charging and no more, asks for the battery replacement). I've tried 3 different good-working batteries from X220 which were supposed to work on X230, but they don't. When starting the laptop with that battery, it stops with the information:" The battery installesd is not supported by this system and will not charge. Please replace the battery with the correct Lenovo battery for this system. Press the ESC to continue".  And after pressing the ESC key, it starts to work, but the PM still writes that the battery is not correct and it doesn't charge. What could it be?

Answer:Lenovo x230 battery problem

Hi,x230 doesn't support the batteries of old 29 series (x220 did). Only hw protected batteries 44 series are being supported by x230 (and 19+ series, external).Batteries of 29 series can only be discharged in x230.Try to perform the original (x230's) battery reset using Lenovo power manager feature.

I have a Lenovo x230 laptop with an i7 processor that starts the second time. This means that when you first turn on, there is a black screen. The restart must be forced and then normally turns on. I tried to use an external screen, tricks with disconnecting the battery and pressing the switch, CMOS battery, RAM memory replacement - nothing did not succeed. On this motherboard, the service replaced the BIOS chips due to failure in the upgrade. They said that the computer would not work anyway. The computer, however, works, but after the second launch - which is annoying. I have updated the BIOS on my own, which did not solve the problem. Once the computer starts, it works very steadily and without problems. I have not found a similar case anywhere on the internet.

I have a Lenovo ThinkPad X230 (which I love dearly) and have a few question about ports and booting.  I would first like to verify that the port on the left side of the laptop directly above one of the USB ports is indeed an ExpressCard 54.  I have searched the web, but have yet to find a definite answer, and my user manual simply stated "ExpressCard."  Furthermore, I would like to know if it is possible to boot an operating system from said port using an ExpressCard 34 SSD (64GB).  I have the intention of installing openSUSE 12.3 to the potential SSD and be able to boot from it.  I greatly appreciate any help.  I  would post an image of said port, but I am being told the image file is much too large.

Hey everyone!I ordered a x230 a few weeks ago and i realized i need bluetooth! I know i can purchase a dongle for a few dollars but i rather keep my USB ports free.Anyone know where I can purchase a bluetooth card so i can install it myself? - Or is it advised not to do that. What do you think I should do?

Answer:Lenovo x230 missing bluetooth!

2 options come to my mind1) you can look for bluetooth expresscard (x220 has a slot, so I'm guessing x230 has it as well)2) you can put it in mini-PCIe slot (for the WWAN card or mSATA SSD), assuming it's empty now, ie. you purchased without WWAN

You should try recalibrating the battery if you have windows 7 OS installed. Also did you get the battery from Lenovo? If you did try to call them and get it exchanged. Your battery has been sitting on the shelve for over 1.5 years.

I have an X230-2306 running Windows 7 Pro 64-bit.  Recently ran Thinkvantage System Update after not having run since I purchased - about 6 months.  Now, the Bluetooth Radio is not working... I get a device in Device Manager under Unkown Devices which is the Broadcom Bluetooth 4.0 (I can tell when I click properties).  I tried going to Lenovo support and getting the most up to date Bluetooth driver - but when I point to that location when doing "Update Driver" I get a message saying: "Windows found software driver for your device but encountered and error attempting to install it" and it shows "Thinkpad Bluetooth 4.0" and says "Driver is not intended for this platform". Any advice???

Answer:X230 Bluetooth Issue

Bluetooth may have been turned off during the update. Use the ThinkVantage tools and from memory it is in the Power Management section. Although I just checked in PM-v6.32 and **bleep** if I can find it now. Lenovo do not make life easy for a lot of stuff. Even a search within the ThinkVantage tool box forbluetoothwifi...returned no results. Sorry, not much help I know but it is not the Broadcom drivers at fault here, It will be the Lenovo control of the BT on/off state. p.s. The censoring **bleep** was to hide dam-n-ed. {sigh} How correct we must be.

Question: X230 Battery Issue

Hi - possibly having some issues with my battery. I've owned the system (X230) for under a year, but the battery life has dropped off significantly since I purchased the machine. I ordered it with a 9 cell, 94WHr battery... As of right now, grabbing the battery report from Windows (the utility bundled with 8) tells me that my laptop is capable of full charge to 75WHr, and the rated capacity is about 86WHr. Now, the funny thing is, according to the same report, I've only been on battery for about 117 Hours... Which any conservative estimate - saying 5 hours per full charge, would put it only at about 25 cycles. I've attached the battery report as a link for anybody that cares to have a look over it on my Google Drive. Save it to your desktop (antivirus, if necessary), and have a look. https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B6cMyYBAjcPJY0NiNjVxU2hPV0E/edit?usp=sharing Any advice on this issue would be quite welcome, thanks.

Answer:X230 Battery Issue

Hey there i've been having the same problem as well! I dont know whether its something wrong with the battery or my cpu as its constantly showing about 10% usage. Luckily i have a 3 year warranty so I can order a new one but it seems strange that the battery life can suddenly decrease from over 10 hours to about 6-7

Looks like I am in the same boat as the rest of you.

I bought my very first Lenovo computer in February of 2013 (X230 Custom Order), and I love everything about this laptop EXCEPT the trackpad.  It has to be the worst mousepad I have ever used on a laptop, and I have owned many.

Why they did away with the separate left and right click buttons is beyond me, but it makes it very hard to make sure you are clicking on the correct one, mainly because you can't "feel" which one you should be tapping.  (I always seem to be clicking on the right side when I intended to click on the left.)

And just like everyone else, I hate the fact that the cursor "jumps" around all the time, especially when you do click on the left or right mouse button and the cursor jumps away from the place you intended to click on.  It is so darn frustrating to use the trackpad that it makes it tough to get any work done.

I sure hope they can come out with a "fix" of some sort, as this thing is almost impossible to use when portable.  Incidentally I am not a trackpoint guy, and have no desire to learn how to use it.  I paid a lot of money for this computer, and having to learn a new method of moving the cursor as a "work around" for a terribly designed trackpad is not acceptable.

I really want to keep this computer, but I don't know if my sanity will allow me to do that if they can't do something about the trackpad. ... Read more

My X230 is about 2 years old but this problem has occurred intermittently since maybe about a year ago. My laptop has a tendency to overheat and shut down. I have noticed when this happens, it seems like hot air is only blowing from the left fan louver and not the rear fan louver. Is this normal? Also, I do notice that the litten mesh vents on the bottom of the laptop (right beneath the fans) do appear to be dusty but I'm not sure if those are also vents. Could that be the issue?

Answer:X230 overheating - fan issue?

Hi Tbfb,

Welcome to Lenovo Community!

As per the query we understood that you are facing the issue with Overheating on ThinkPad X230.

If there is any dust particle in the air ventilation will also causes the system to overheat, and it might also extend to Touchpad. Hence I suggest you to get it fixed out service center, or else if you want to clean it by yourself you can use the ThinkPad X230 hardware manual for that.

Note: These steps should be performed by trained technician so that it should not get any damage to other parts. However if you want to try, you should try it out on your own risk.

We've just received new X230s in work, shipped with Ultrabase. While the laptop itself seems fine, we are having troubles with the Ultrabase. The Ultrabase works normally after computer startup, but we are having troubles with undocking/redocking the laptop. The symptoms are:When the undock button is pressed (either in Start menu or the hardware button on the ultrabase), the "Computer is successfully undocked" message appears almost instantly. This contrasts with behavior of X200 ultrabase that I was using before X230.If I undock and redock the laptop, the USB ports do not work and the red light on the ultrabase does not light up.If I wait several minutes before undocking the laptop after pressing the undock button, the USB stops working. If I then physically undock the laptop and redock it, all works as expected, including USBs.Sometimes, if I undock the computer right after the message that I may do so and then redock it and wait for some time, a message like "USB 2.0 MTT HUB Controller cannot be ejected undocked" appears and then the USB ports start working again. Needless to say that this issue is very annoying and kind of defeats the purpose of having the dock, since one cannot quickly and reliably disconnect/reconnect the laptop to external devices. One more point - I've reinstalled the shipped Windows installation by the Windows 7 Enterprise edition (64bit) available in my work, but there are no yellow exclamation marks in device manager, hence I do... I have a 4 year old Lenovo Thinkpad X230 computer.  Since I upgraded to Windows 10 (two years ago?) my computer has randomly shut off with no warning.  There doesn't seem to be a pattern with regard to when or how this happens.  The computer starts normally every time.  This can happen upwards of 5 or 6 times in an hour (although sometimes it can go several days without shutting off). In the last year (since June 2016), the computer has been evaluated by three different technicians on three different occasions (June, October, January).  Each found no hardware issues, no issues with fuzz/dust, no obvious software issues, no malware or other viruses.  Personally, I have explored the answer on the internet and fiddled with the settings relating to sleep mode (among other suggestions) and nothing seems to have worked.  I recently was advised to revert to the original windows 10, undoing all the updates and additional installations that I've put on the computer.  I did this, and miraculously it helped (although it still shut off twice since then.  This was in February).  In the last two weeks, I was forced to upgrade back to normal and the problem has returned.  Additionally, the first person who looked at my computer (back in June 2016), told me that this was aparently a common problem with Windows 10 and that the only way to fix it was to revert to Windows 8.   I would like to not have to do this, if poss... Description of problem: at some point when playing audio, sound will cut out. The levels will still be moving on the mixer, but no sound will come through the speakers or sound jack. It seems that soon after I've closed all sound-producing applications, sound returns. I am 50-75% sure that this is strictly a sound jack issue, as I don't remember being able to reproduce the issue without the sound jack being active when the audio drops out. Frequently, bumping my headphones' cord seems to cause the problem, but other times, the problem seems to happen on a click, a loud sound, or seemingly nothing at all.

I am unsure of how to reliably reproduce the problem, so it is difficult to diagnose whether or not the problem can be reproduced when the sound jack is not active. This isn't common use for me...

Origin: Appeared mid-October, around the same time I had upgraded to the newest drivers (where the old ones were from earlier than May 2013). All were downloaded through the Lenovo website and/or Lenovo's System Update utility, with the exception of the Intel graphics drivers, which were downloaded through the Intel website. At this point, I was running Windows 8, not Windows 8.1. I installed Windows 8.1 recently, and the problem remains.

I just received a new compay issues computer: x230 running Windows Pro 64 bit, Office 2010 and an SSD.  Unfortunately, out of the box the pointing devices, either the ultranav or an external mouse and keyboard (MSFT Sculpt), suffer from auto clicking and inability to input text...the text writes over itself...cursor moves forward and then backspaces on itself. The external keyboard worked fine when tested on other notebooks at home.  I did unistall the MSFt keyboard SW on the x230 to see if that made a difference.  Nope.  My IT team remotely updated all drivers, etc. So, everthing system-wise is up to date.  They seemed to have fixed it for about an hour, then it went back to this behavior, including opening multiple instances of applications on its own. The PC is unusable. Thoughts? Halfcalf18

Answer:New Lenovo x230 Pointer & Keyboard Issues

The touchpad is defective. If you have an external mouse, try to disable it (either in BIOS or OS) while you get a replacement.

My friend owns a spare Lenovo X230 with Intel i5-3210M CPU and I own a Lenovo X220 with Intel i5-2430M CPU. My X220 have a terrible Intel HD 3000 Graphics installed and I like the performance boost the Intel HD 4000 can give me. Since my friend have no need of his X230 (he have an Alienware 17), he said that if I can find a way to exchange CPUs between these two computers, I can, provided that the X230 still works with my 2430M CPU afterwards. So I would like to know is it possible to exchange CPUs between these 2 computers but1. NOT losing all data2. I can do it myself with a screwdriverWe don't really care about the ports except for the USBs and headphones. So if some ports have to be rendered useless, it's fine by us.Any help, tips or instructions would be gladly appreciated. Thanks!

I have a Lenovo X230, running Kubuntu 14.04. When I disconnect the slice battery at the bottom the system resets, it's very annoying. What's worse is that it seems like jostling the system, also can cause it to power cycle. I don't really have a need to remove the slice battery very often, but essentially if I put the laptop into standby, and put it in by laptop knapsack, the system is off after I get where I'm going. Thoughts? I saw somewhere that allegedly, when you unlock the battery, some thinkpad utility gets notified to switch the power, I wonder if the hotplug is a software only solution, and not doable in standby. Steve Ramage

I called Lenovo and got my Windows 8 recovery disc shipped out free of charge ten minutes later. I have a case number to prove it! This is so awesome.I didn't say anything except that I didn't know why windows won't start, I didn't know why recovery wont start, and I needed my discs so that I could get things working again. That's the last time I let my mischievious daughter play with my laptop before I get it all set up. Hello, So recently I've noticed that I am unable to adjust the brightness of my Lenovo x230 display.  The Fn+F8/F9 hotkeys do absolutely nothing.  All other hotkeys work without issue. I change the brightness in Lenovo Power Manager, apply, and no change.  This applies to both AC and battery power. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Mike Edit:  Fixed by installing Windows 8.  I guess it's about time I get used to it!

Answer:Lenovo x230 - how to adjust screen brightness?

What you could've tried before was installing the Hotkey driver.

I want to be able to boot my X230 in UEFI only (CSM off). Lenovo media for X230 does not seem to be UEFI bootable, so I boot it with CSM on. The Recovery program asks about the GPT or MBR partitioning with the explanation that with GPT it will be bootable in UEFI only. But when I reboot after recovery and turn CSM off, the "Starting Windows" screen freezes endlessly. There is some hdd activity, but no Windows are loaded.Any clue what went wrong and how to fix it? Thanks.

Answer:X230: win 7 x64 in uefi using lenovo recovery media

You need to enable CSM when ever booting to external devices, so that is normal.     The difference between GPT and MBR is that the newer GPT is more robust, secure and allows more partitions and better error recovery, but both should work.   If you press and hold down the [F8] key, and then turn on the comptuter, do you get the option to boot in to Safe Mode, and if so can you boot in to Safe Mode, or Safe Mode with Networking? I presume that you are recoverying due to a prior problem, so more informaiton on why you were recovering may be helpful. Best of luck

Hello and welcome,

I'm on DSL today (1.5mbps) and that's way too slow to view those pictures.  Can you resize them or maybe just post in text what they say.

Even on my cable connection it would take a very long time to see those things. I can't tell if it's just gigantic images or a slow server on your end since I can't download them to check the sizes.

Hi all,Apologies if I've missed this elsewhere - new to the forums so still learning to navigate. As background, machine type listed below:X230 Laptop (ThinkPad) - Machine Type 2325, Model BA6As I see it I'm having two separate issues here but they may well be linked: Recent Windows 10 updates are making the taskbar fully ineffective - I note this is fairly common and have tried the powershell route to check updates to no avail; curious to know what the advice here generally is, if X230 is no good with Windows 10 or is there something specific I should be doing to rectify this. This weekend, my laptop has developed a habit whereby the sound and video playback stops working suddenly. On boot-up it's fine but after a while, I can't listen to music or watch videos at all. Bit alarmed about this but suspect it may be linked to the thunderstorm on Thursday (based in London...), given I woke up to realise the powerboard on my TV had also gone. My laptop is within warranty so hopefully if it's hardware related, I would hope this is covered - in truth, I was reassured about the Lenovo warranty but have never had cause to use it at home or work over the last 6 years of using Lenovos.Any help or guidance would be massively appreciated!Kind regards,Bal

Hello Lenovo Community, I'm back to ThinkPad - I previously owned TP R31 and yesterday I received brand new TP X230. Specs are as follows: I5-3380M (up to 3,6 ghz), 8gb RAM (2x4), 500 GB 7200 HDD, standard TN display (I'm fine wit it). Still going to get a decend SDD and put the HDD in some external case (I'm not giving up my 3G modem). The X230 was shipped with substandard 4 cell (44) battery. The problem is that on a full charge (I've calibrated the battery) I only get about 2 hours of normal web browsing (i set display to "3" and CPU performance to "low"). I wanted to ask if this is normal with this battery (it's obviously less than Lenovo declares), or something is wrong here? Nontheless, I love my new machine. Thank you for your answers,Tom

Answer:X230 - 4 cell battery issue

that sounds low. 4 cells in your usage scenario should give around 3 to 4 hrs of battery life. what is the full and design charge of your battery as reported by thinkvantage power manager.

Hello, I have seen this question a few times in these forums, and it is happening to my X230 as well. All was fine when I first got it about a month ago - when I closed the lid it would sleep and stay asleep. Now - not sure what has changed - SOMETIMES when I close the lid it will go into sleep mode momentarily and then revert to waking mode. I have checked to see that my AV isn't running and that it doesn't appear that anything is going on in the background. i have set it not to wake from the mouse movement. Yet the problem still occurs. I have been using the FnF4 keys also - that seems to have better results, but I really would like it to behave as it did when it was first brand new and just sleep when I close the lid as I have it set to do. Any suggestions on where to look or settings to adjust would be helpful. Info: Win 7 Home - which has been updated with latest security updatesi5 processor4GB RAM500 GB hard driveNorton Internet Securitywireless USB mouseWireless internet mobile broadband (which for some reason also doesn't register when the computer sleeps - it still wants to show that there is a device connected when it is not) What else can I tell you that might help to suss out this issue? Thanks!Lily

Answer:X230 won't stay asleep issue

Does this happen at the same time of the day? I would check your programs with auto-check features. Many of them are set from the factory to work in the middle of the night. Some of them may wake up your computer.

Hi everyone, I received my X230 yesterday and I'm pretty satistied overall with it. Although, there are a few annoying issues and I'm wondering if anyone else experienced them and have found a way around them. First one is windows 8, although I'm not expecting any advice here I simply can't stand it and will format with windows 7 ASAP. My second problem would have to be with the trackpad. It is pretty much exactly what I'm expecting (average trackpad) other than 1 specific motion that makes it completly frustrating for me to use. Basically it's when I move a finger from any top portion of the trackpad (and by top I mean, if you lay a finger down just above the trackpad and then slide down). To be more specific : If I slide down from the middle portion of the trackpad, NOTHING works. I could move my finger for 10 minutes and nothing is registered. My motions are seen in the drivers though! But are all ignored. From the top left and right side only the "going down" movement doesnt work. Whatever I do with my finger afterwards registers okay. This speicial motion works WITHOUT the latest UltraNav drivers. As far as playing with the options when the drivers were installed, I literally tried to disable everything and nothing changed. I can see that my movements are registered (using the drivers) but no mouse movement happen when coming from the top. Using the trackpad without any drivers suck pretty bad though. Third grip would have to be with th... Read more

Hello, I started a new post because this is a different Error. After I updated my x230t using the recommeneded updates from the website, my keyboard suddenly stopped working. I tried re-installing windows but the error remained. I eventually found the issue being that when I start up the PC, the Fn key is stuck as if its still pressed, even when its not (the key itself isnt stuck). To solve this, I went into Bios and swapped the Fn key with left Ctrl, and now whenever I boot up the PC I plug in an external keyboard and press left Ctrl, this "unsticks" the left Ctrl key (which is physically the Fn key after I swapped them)  and lets me use the computer normally. What could have caused it? is it unrelated to windows seeing as it happened after I clean installed? how do I go about fixing it? and can I contact an offical Lenovo support somewhere online?

Answer:x230 Tablet keyboard issue

I would just replace the keyboard.  This sort of problem is almost always a short in the keyboard.  Used ones are commonly available.  The T430, X230, T530, W530 all use the same keyboard

Recently bought an X230 and realized that is going to sleep at what I thought was a random time and I so I tried messing with the timmer settings. Then I realized that its not a random time, it goes to sleep/suspend whenever its plugged in to AC power and I ever so lightly move the AC plug on the back of the laptop. If I knock the plug, tap the plug, and even when I unplug it sometimes it goes right to sleep/suspend and I have to start it up again. What in the world? Anyone else experiecne anything like this? Thanks in advance!

When I took my computer off my desk the other day in order to carry it to my work, I found out that the lid had cracked, just underneath the Lenovo brand name, so the front part of the lid comes off and I can see the screen between. I went into my local Lenovo ThinkCenter and asked them to repair this problem, but they said this kind of damage is not covered by the warranty. I stand by it that this is a case of material weakness and it ought to be covered. The product simply doesn't correspond to what is promised. Also, I'm afraid that the crack may have caused one of the WiFi antennas to break, besides further impacting the structural integrity of the computer. The computer had never fallen, been hit nor has any it been exposed to any kind of impact. It is also only 2 months old. Of course, this is hard to prove, but there are no other signs of damage on the exterior, which would be the case if it had indeed fallen. And this is a Thinkpad, they're supposed to be able to withstand a certain degree of impact anyway. My X200 went through some seriously rough jungle and never had any problem. The reason I had bought another Thinkpad after my X200 - despite a below-average screen resolution and an above-average price - was their superior customer support. If my issue is not dealt with properly, if it cannot be repaired for free and within a couple of working days, this will be my last ever Lenovo. Hi everyone, hope you can help me out with this issue I am having.  I bought a new X230 a couple weeks ago along with the additional 6 cell slice battery. However, I have been having a problem.  When the slice battery runs out the system won't go into sleep; instead when I close the lid on the laptop it turns off completely and when I reboot it all of the programs / app have closed.  It's like the system has a hard power off when that happens. When I reboot, I get this message that says: "Battery 2: There is an error."  Clicking on the replacement options links goes to a 404 page.  (Thanks Lenovo!)  http://screencast.com/t/LLlmqaQ1NJ5k Looking in the Lenovo Solution Center in these cases the secondary battery is listed as "not available".  http://screencast.com/t/PlYdomKZU Anything I should try or should I be getting a new battery from Lenovo?  Is this a common problem?

Answer:Lenovo X230 Slice battery error and problems

Hey there!

Can you tell us what model (machine type) of X230 do you have and what operating system it is running? The machine type can be found on a sticker on the bottom of the unit. This will help me assit you with the errors you are recieving.

Also, have you checked your power manager settings? It is possible to have a PM setting to turn the laptop off when the lid is closed and/or when the slice battery dies.

Hi,
I'm having a hard time trying to wirelessly connect my Lumia 950Xl to Lenovo X230 laptop. The Connect app launches but gets stuck in with the message "Lumia is about to project". On both devices I have Windows 10 Anniversary Update with all the recent updates, settings enable etc.
The thing is I can connect the phone to my Surface Pro 3, updated as well. So it's just the thing with my X230 (it supports Miracast as well).
Any ideas, what more I could check?
