Question: keyboard Fix lenovo thinkpad X230

Hi Sirs/Madams, Good Day. I would like to seek for your humble assistance if ever you have any idea on how to fix the whole plate of the x230 keyboard. What happend was accidentally I spilt a huge amount of coffer in my unit. i immediately placed my laptop upside down to run any liquid in the keyboard, how ever after a couple of hours, i cannot use it any more. when I tried to swithed it off, and try to switch-on; no avail. Will there be any chance that i can still recover the whole keyboard? since i tried to use other keyboard (same model) and it worked. also the power button does not function anymore. Thanks thanks

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I recently purchased an X230 thinkpad.I am having some issues, specifically;a. the screen is a yellowy colour - this seems to only be at night, not during the day!b. the right click on the bottom of the touchpad does not work conistently - sometimes it acts like a left click instead of a right click - this is incovenient as i do a lot of editing work in WordI ran a Linux check and these issues did not occur - so I think it may be software related - I am using Windows 10 Pro.Does any one have suggestions?thanks

HelloI have one question. From what I read it is impossible to replace the processor in X230, and here is my question, would it be possible to replace the entire motherboard with the processor for a stronger one?I care about this because I'm looking for a mobile laptop.

I have a Lenovo ThinkPad X230 (which I love dearly) and have a few question about ports and booting.  I would first like to verify that the port on the left side of the laptop directly above one of the USB ports is indeed an ExpressCard 54.  I have searched the web, but have yet to find a definite answer, and my user manual simply stated "ExpressCard."  Furthermore, I would like to know if it is possible to boot an operating system from said port using an ExpressCard 34 SSD (64GB).  I have the intention of installing openSUSE 12.3 to the potential SSD and be able to boot from it.  I greatly appreciate any help.  I  would post an image of said port, but I am being told the image file is much too large.

Yes, this slot is indeed for the Expresscard and no, unfortunately you cannot boot from it.

I have a Lenovo X230, running Kubuntu 14.04. When I disconnect the slice battery at the bottom the system resets, it's very annoying. What's worse is that it seems like jostling the system, also can cause it to power cycle. I don't really have a need to remove the slice battery very often, but essentially if I put the laptop into standby, and put it in by laptop knapsack, the system is off after I get where I'm going. Thoughts? I saw somewhere that allegedly, when you unlock the battery, some thinkpad utility gets notified to switch the power, I wonder if the hotplug is a software only solution, and not doable in standby. Steve Ramage

I have a 4 year old Lenovo Thinkpad X230 computer.  Since I upgraded to Windows 10 (two years ago?) my computer has randomly shut off with no warning.  There doesn't seem to be a pattern with regard to when or how this happens.  The computer starts normally every time.  This can happen upwards of 5 or 6 times in an hour (although sometimes it can go several days without shutting off). In the last year (since June 2016), the computer has been evaluated by three different technicians on three different occasions (June, October, January).  Each found no hardware issues, no issues with fuzz/dust, no obvious software issues, no malware or other viruses.  Personally, I have explored the answer on the internet and fiddled with the settings relating to sleep mode (among other suggestions) and nothing seems to have worked.  I recently was advised to revert to the original windows 10, undoing all the updates and additional installations that I've put on the computer.  I did this, and miraculously it helped (although it still shut off twice since then.  This was in February).  In the last two weeks, I was forced to upgrade back to normal and the problem has returned.  Additionally, the first person who looked at my computer (back in June 2016), told me that this was aparently a common problem with Windows 10 and that the only way to fix it was to revert to Windows 8.   I would like to not have to do this, if poss... I have recently encountered two bus issues on my recently acquired old-ish second-hand ThinkPad X230 [2325SWK build with a G2ET91WW (2.51) BIOS], accompanied by a ThinkPad UltraBase Series 3 docking station [P/N 0B67692].My research requires me to use a Cyrillic (Russian) keyboard and fairly recently I acquired a nice keyboard with a small footprint in Saint Petersburg.  It is manufactured in China by A4Tech (www.a4tech.com) [Model KV-300H].When I initially plugged the keyboard in, it worked perfectly. Hello,  I'm having some trouble with turning on my laptop. The problem originally started when some keys on my keyboard stopped working. I cleaned the keys, restarted my laptop, tried a previous restore point and then did a hard reset after nothing worked to fix my laptop.  After hard resetting, I tried turning on my laptop and it did not turn on. So far, I've plugged in my laptop into the adaptor, plugged the adaptor directly into the wall outlet, and removed the battery and plugged in the laptop. The one thing I have noticed with my laptop is that when I plug in the adaptor, the battery and sleep lights turn on for a moment, then the sleep light turns off, and the battery light will stay on momentarily but then it will blink off after a few seconds. What else should I do? Thank you

Answer:Lenovo Thinkpad x230 stuck on boot menu

I would need to see it to be sure, but my guess is that the hard disk was logically damaged.  That means the boot record or partition information was wiped out.  It could also be a disk hardware error.  Do you have a backup?

welcome to the community!

please check to make sure your trackpad is not disabled in your bios.

for reference, on my t60p, i have the trackpad disabled in bios because i never use it ( trackpoint evangelist here ). regardless, when i'm at the windows 7 login screen, my trackpad is active. as soon as i'm logged in and i've got a windows desktop, the trackpad is inactive. i'm not sure why i have that small window where it works, but there it is, fwiw.

Hi, My Thinkpad X230 tablet screen is not truning on.  It just shows the dark blank screen. The power button is on, all other indicators are green.I have tried removing the battery, holding Fn button etc. Can someone help to resolve this issue please.. Thank You.

Answer:Lenovo Thinkpad X230 Tablet - Display Problem

If it is under warranty, call for service, rather than dealing with it. The first step is to unplug it and remove the battery. Press the power button 5 times, holding it for 10 seconds on the last push. Put it back together; plug it in, and try again.

Hello. I have a Thinkpad X230. I'm trying to drive video to a Samsung LCD TV via the mini displayport, with a mini displayport  --> hdmi adaptor (i've tried two adaptors now). The X230 detects the the Samsung TV when connected, both in the Sound and in the Graphics Properties. You can hear the connect / see the PC screen flash when the cable is plugged in. Unfortunately I can't get any sound or video on the TV. (I just tried connecting to a Dell Monitor and was able to get it to work.) The TV takes HDMI from my Dell laptop just fine on the same cable/input to the TV.The other problem is that in trying to adjust settings, now when I plug in the HDMI cable via the adaptor, the PC screen goes blank, it seems to be trying to make the TV primary, and the TV is getting the signal, so I have to pull the cable out to get the PC display back. Any ideas on setting / adjustments? ThanksAlan

I just received a new compay issues computer: x230 running Windows Pro 64 bit, Office 2010 and an SSD.  Unfortunately, out of the box the pointing devices, either the ultranav or an external mouse and keyboard (MSFT Sculpt), suffer from auto clicking and inability to input text...the text writes over itself...cursor moves forward and then backspaces on itself. The external keyboard worked fine when tested on other notebooks at home.  I did unistall the MSFt keyboard SW on the x230 to see if that made a difference.  Nope.  My IT team remotely updated all drivers, etc. So, everthing system-wise is up to date.  They seemed to have fixed it for about an hour, then it went back to this behavior, including opening multiple instances of applications on its own. The PC is unusable. Thoughts? Halfcalf18

Answer:New Lenovo x230 Pointer & Keyboard Issues

The touchpad is defective. If you have an external mouse, try to disable it (either in BIOS or OS) while you get a replacement.

Hi All,I've bought LENOVO X230 THINKPAD TABLET, i7-3520M, MULTI-TOUCH on eBay, and I got it with a broken motherboard.  I couldn't turn it on when I opened the box, and I gave it to IBM's service in Israel. Now they just told me that they don't have the part, and they are waiting to get it from the US only next week. It means that I will use my NEW computer only 2 weeks after I got it!It relly make me feel very disappointed from Lenovo's quality! Does it make sense? I needed it for work and now I'm working with a terrible computer! How is it happen to a company like Lenovo that they sell a new expensive computer with a broken motherboard??? Don't they have a quality control ? Do I deserve a compensation?

Apologies if this is reprising and earlier question on this topic. I have recently acquired an old-ish second-hand ThinkPad X230 [2325SWK build with a G2ET91WW (2.51) BIOS], accompanied by a ThinkPad UltraBase Series 3 docking station [P/N 0B67692] which has an empty 2½" bay.I need advice on the following issues:1    The X230 currently has an SSD installed [Samsung 128GB MZ7TD128HAFV-000L1] which will not be large enough for the programs and program data that I have planned to install.  I would like to upgrade to a 1 1TB SSD, and I propose to clone the contents of the existing 128 GB drive to a 1 TB Samsung 850 Evo [MZ-75E1T0B].  Are there any SATA or other firmware issues that I should be aware of before acquiring the 1 TB drive, arranging for its cloning and for the replacement of the current 128 GB drive?2    I would like to populate the empty 2½" bay on the UltraBase Series 3 docking station with an HDD, and the model I have in mind is a 2 TB Seagate BarraCuda Hard Drive [ST2000LM015].  Again, I'd like to know if there are any hardware, firmware or other issues before acquisition and installation.I'd be grateful for any help on either of these two issues in an Australian context.

Hi, Following problem:The "M" key from my T61p laptop broke on sunday and today I've called the technical support (in Austria -> i live in Austria and the laptop was bought from here) and it was told me that the "broken" key is not covered (anymore) by the warranty and that I can get it repaired on behalf of the Thinkpad Protection. What's the difference? Warranty: Lenovo sends a new keyboard and I must change it myself. TPP: The laptop will be picked-up and send in Germany for "repairs" (changing a key!!!) and then send back to me (about 2 Weeks -> this is inacceptable for a key!).  Can someone help me with this or give me some advices what should I do next?2 weeks without the laptop is way too much for me! P.S: After the phone conversation I've tried to reach the technical support via e-mail(to clarify somehow the situation) but apparently this is not possible in Austria! As I know lenovo "must" offer "warranty support" via e-mail too.. thanks very much, Victor G

Answer:Lenovo Thinkpad Protection keyboard

the warranty covers mfg. defects not accidential damage a broken key is not mfg. defect when I've had a part fail they send it to me but when I have an accident and break something I have to send it to depot for repair if the keyboard had failed they would send you one

I have a Lenovo ThinkPad T440. I have replaced the trackpad with an older style trackpad, after putting everything back together it seemed as if everything was fine, but then I noticed that the delete key, PgUp, PgDn and PrtSc were not working. Note, the delete key does not respond even when I'm in the BIOS. I find it very hard to believe that I've damaged the keyboard and thus the functionality of some keys has been lost, I have examined the connecting ribbon cable and connection socket carefully, they are undamaged and free of debree. Can anyone give me any other suggestions? An external USB keyboard works fine.Delete Key doesn't work in BIOS.

My keys were beginning to stop working one by one, (number keys, spacebar, and overall sections of the keyboard). It turned out the ribbon, main connection, was just getting loose. The "latch" that holds this ribbon in place is not very secure. You may want to try getting access to the keyboard to check the connections.

If you hit the backslash key do you get something else instead? You may just need to set the keyboard to English UK.Start settings - control panel - regional and language settings - put EVerything to English UK Apply and then reboot the laptop for the changes to take effect.

So I was using my Lenovo Yoga 2 laptop for a study session. My keyboard was working fine the last time I used it, which was like ten minutes before it stopped working. Nothing on my keyboard is working, including the F controls/shortcuts. The ThinkPad is working normally and so is its corresponding right/left keys. The screen is also fine and the touch screen keyboard is working as well. My laptop isn't in tablet mode or any other mode other than laptop mode.  So basically, has anyone else had this problem and possibly share their wisdom. Also, if there are basic shortcuts that simply turn off your keyboard and can turnit back on, it'd be quite helpful, because there could be a simple fix but I wouldn't be aware since I am not very tech savvy.  Thank you so much!

Hi There - I just bought my Lenovo Thinkpad T450s. I learnt that ......since the keyboard is with the backlit, it would be fragile (when compared to the one without the backlit) and it would need a protector cover. I also prefer to have it for avoiding the dust. I am not sure, if the cover protector would not let the heat generated to let out and will break the graphics board. By the way, could anyone please clarify that doubt and also suggest me a appropriate cover for my item (T450s) in amazon or anywhere else ? I was looking to buy the item displayed in the lenovo website itself, but unfortunately it is only in the US site and not in the canada site. I live in canada. Please help me with your suggestions. Thank You so much.  bye !!

Answer:Lenovo Thinkpad T450s Keyboard cover!!

Hello,

I suppose it depends on how you use and travel with your laptop and under what conditions. I would think a sleeve, backpack, padded laptop tote,or laptop case would suffice. I've never had a problem with backlit keyboards on ThinkPads or Yogas. I can understand your concern with wanting to protect a new device, though. If Lenovo does not have what I need, I usually try to find it at Best Buy, Amazon, or Walmart. That's just my opinion. Perhaps others will have additional suggestions.

Answer:Lenovo Thinkpad E550 - Turn ON keyboard backlight?

Good day and welcome to the community.

Does your spacebar show this icon: ?

If so, please try holding the Fn key and then tapping the spacebar.
If your spacebar doesn't have that icon, then, in my experience, you don't have a backlit keyboard.

I have the exact same problem is another user on the forum here. I installed arch linux on my N22 last week. I put the laptop down yesterday, came back to it later, and now the keyboard doesn't work! I'm almost positive it's a hardware problem with these laptops but if anyone has info that would be great.

Dear Lenovo, I bought a Lenovo W550s laptop last August, and last week I spilled water on the keyboard. Now, about 8 buttons on the keyboard (at least), don't work. I am curious, will the warranty help me in any way with any thing?  Also, I am looking for a replacement (internal) keyboard, and am having trouble finding one. I am pretty sure that the keyboard that shipped with my laptop last fall was not backlit, as the keyboard never lit up (unless I didn't know how to turn it on). Anyways, the Parts No.: 0C44952, ID No.: 57P1ZW, FRU No.:04Y2387, Model No. KM BL-105US.  When I looked up the part on Lenovo's website, it returned nothing: http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/partslookup.  So, my questions for you are:1.) Does the Lenovo warranty help me cover my malfunctioning keyboard?2.) Is the keyboard that I have, Parts No. 0C44952, a backlit keyboard?  3.) Where can I get a compatible keyboard replacement for this laptop? 4.) Will this keyboard replacement work? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA3DY3CW6149&ignorebbr=1 Kind regards,Spencer

Hi, I inadvertently pressed something on my ThinkPad keyboard and it's now not typing what I expect to see. The language is set in the control panel to English UK and this hasn't been affected. However most of the letter keys are now acting as keyboard shortcuts. In Word 2010 this is what happens: 4 = ?e = ?r = registered symbolt = trademark symboly = puts cursor to beginning of linei = opens File menuo = puts document in outline viewa = às = triggers split screend = enters a bookmarkf = enters a footnotel = starts a numbered listc = copyright symbolv = opens paste special dialog box I've obviously trigger some keyboard shortcut to change the settings but have no idea how. Need to reset this asap as it's my work laptop - IT team not able to help as I'm not on the company network and can't log on as my password can't be typed in accurately... Any help appreciated. Hello. Last week a got a brand new ThinkPad E460 factory sealed for work. And it've had troubles with it out of the box, I have a ThinkPad T450s private and have never experienced anything like this on my private laptop. So of the bath to tends to freeze at Lenovo logo in BIOS boot screen. And I have to press a bunch of keys for it to continue. I think I might have fixed this issue by disableing secure boot and anti-theaft. It didn't always happen, but it happend every morning at work. I disabled these features now so I can't confirm or deny if that problem is competely ficked. I have of coruse updated the BIOS and all drivers. My second issue is that EVERY time, not only when I restart but also if I sign out of my account and back in again is that my TouchPad refuse to work if I don't click a key (any key) on the lenovo keyboard in addition to this left arrow key is in a loop. This is really annoying as I use this with a dock at my workplace. If I move the coursor to a textfield with my external mouse or the Trackpoint (that works fine regardless if I click on the keyboard or not) I will see the corusing being moved to the left contantly untill I click a key at the keyboard. What is going on? These issues seems really strange to me and not something you'd epxect.

Answer:ThinkPad E460 - TouchPad Will not work untill lenovo keyboard is pressed and arrow left is in a loop

I have not had the POST freeze problem, although I did have a bug with Yubikey, I had to push the Yubikey button twice to input the second part of my long VeraCrypt password, this was solved with a BIOS update.. Also my right speaker sounds broken on higher volumes, and OSD brightness bar is stuck on screen after waking up from S3 suspend, but goes away if I adjust the brightness with the keys on the keyboard. I do also have the TouchPad lockup problem! I have noticed the same, random lockups of the TouchPad. The TrackPoint works but the TouchPad locks up. It is restored by pushing a keyboard key or the TrackPoint mouse keys, or just leaving the TouchPad alone for a while (5-10 seconds). I got this machine with Windows 10 pre-installed but decided to go back to Windows 7 since Windows 10 has been nothing but a big PITA. I didn't notice this problem on Windows 10, but I have plenty of other Windows 10 specific problems. After installing all the latest drivers available for E460 (latest available from the site at the time, September 2016) this problem popped up. Current driver: 8.216.1616.135 I just checked System Update and noticed an update for the ALPS ThinkPad UltraNav Driver, so I'll update and check back (if I remember). New driver: 8.216.1616.151[Problem fixes]- Fixed an issue related to TouchPad Cursor no response in a short time after resume from S3 by lid close Maybe this have or will fix your TouchPad problem too.

Two questions: I've been thinking about buying an X230 (or the X1 Carbon), but the more I look the more I think I should take advantage of the ability to upgrade the x230 with both more RAM and a WWAN-fitting SSD by buying the minimum specs available.  The tests I've seen have mostly been with the x230 with the i5 chip and an HDD.  When I compared the i5 and i7 chips (http://cpuboss.com/cpus/Intel-Core-i7-3520M-vs-Intel-Core-i5-3320M) they seemed to be pretty similar.  Is the i5 sufficiently fast with an SSD or would I regret trying to be extra cheap.  Also, is it silly to get a model with an SSD drive already in it, if I'm going to get an mSATA drive anyway? Any advice would be most welcome. Thanks,.

Answer:Thinkpad X230 i5 vs i7, HDD vs. SSD

I have an X230 with the i5 CPU and a 500Gb 7200-rpm hard drive. It is plenty fast to do anything I need including having 2 machines running on top of the Windows 8 host (3 separate machines all running at the same time). Even so, I can run anything else I want. It is certainly fast enough to work with an SSD. I did not do SSD because they are not big enough and are still subject to catastrophic failure (no gentle failure for SSD's).  .... JDH

I'm considering making the switch to a ThinkPad X230, but I need big storage space (right now I keep a HDD in the Ultrabay of my T420s).  Can anyone recommend some 512 GB SSD options?  I want quality and reliability and a good warranty.  I wish Lenovo offered one as I prefer to keep the all the parts backed by Lenovo, but in this case they offer no option so I have to look elsewhere. I have done some searching and the new Samsung 840 Pro Series looks good:http://www.samsung.com/us/computer/memory-storage/MZ-7PD512BW There is also an older Samsung 830 Series, and I believe Crucial makes a 512GB option as well. Also, if I add a mSATA SSD under the palm rest, could Lenovo really deny me warranty on unrelated issues in the future because of that?  I buy 3-year and 4-year on-site warranties on my machines (and I have used them), so I do not want to jeapordize my warranty.

Hi All, We've recently upgraded to Wireless AC, and from reading around, I find that there may not be a way to put Wireless AC cards (I've been looking at the Intel AC-7260) in our ThinkPad X230's. Can anyone please confirm if this is true? This BIOS whitelisting is a ridiculous idea. If I pay £1000+ for a laptop, I don't expect restrictions on what hardware I can use with the laptop. Sort it out Lenovo!! Thanks,Oliver

Answer:ThinkPad X230 Wireless AC

Nobody? Nothing? We've got over 900 Lenovo laptops and desktops on-site, and if Lenovo are going to restrict us from doing simple things like change a wireless card, I will definitely be looking at using a different manufacturer when it comes round to refresh time. Disappointing.

Hey Hi,  I am planning to upgrade my Thinkpad X230s memory to 8GB. I have few questions, it would be a great help if someone can help me.1) Is it better to use 2x4GB configuration or 1x8GB? I have a ThinkPad X230 with a 500Gb hard drive (2306-CTO). When I purchased it, I also purchased a Lenovo Slim USB Portable DVD Burner (DY-8A8NH13C). The DVD device works well to install some software from a CD or DVD. I want to consider upgrading this computer to a 1Tb hard drive (0A65633) 1. Will the 0A65633 1 Tb hard drive fit in the X230. That is, replace the existing drive with the new 1 Tb drive?2. The 1 Tb drive is 5400-rpm whereas the existing 500 Gb drive is 7200-rpm. It has been nearly 10 years that I have used anything slower that 7200-rpm. Will the 1 Tb drive be slow?3. Since if is a new drive (no recovery partitions), can I order Recovery DVD's from Lenovo for the X230?  I think I can.4. Can I boot the first Recovery DVD from the USB Slim DVD device?  Will that work? or do I need to purchase a Docking station? 5. I have not changed UEFI security at all in the BIOS. Can I just boot the Recovery DVD?  and will it even install? I imagine I might do this in November after Windows 8.1 is released and combine the two upgrades (hard drive and Windows 8.1) into one exercise. I also might wait until a faster 1 Tb drive is released. Do you imagine fast 1 Tb hard drives in the near future? Thank you, .... JDH

Solved!

Go to Solution.

Answer:Upgrade a ThinkPad X230

1. The 0A65633 is a 9.5 mm drive, so it won't fit the X230. It requires 7 mm drives. 2. The speed of the drive is not only dependent on the RPM of the drive, there are other factors too i.e. amount of drive memory cache, etc. Since the density of the data of the 1TB drive more than 500 GB drive, then for each rotation theoretically the reader/writer head should also pick up/write more data thus making it faster. 3. Yes you can. Or make your own. 4. Yes you can. Or use a USB thumb drive to recover from. Fast platter hdd? The technology of platter will only allow so much data to be read, we are pretty much at the technological dead end with the current platter hdd in terms of transfer rate. Don't expect revolutionary breakthrough with the current platter hdd, i am expecting only tiny speed increase increments. I mean if you need speed, use a mSATA drive (maybe 64 gigs one) to act as a cache drive with Lenovo ExpressCache software, or get a SSHD (which is basically a platter hdd with SSD cache installed) pretty much same as the mSATA + normal spinning platter in terms of how it works.

This might be of some help to those who are thinking of adding RAM to their X230 notebooks and thinking of Transcend RAM modules as an option. In 2013 I had purchased a X230 with 4GB RAM module in single slot. Now when I wanted to add another 8 GB RAM, I saw references to Kingston, Hynix, Samsung, Corsair brands in some posts in this forum. Where I live none of these brands are readily available, only Transcend is available in the shops that I frequent. Today I purchased Transcend DDR3 8GB 1600MHz SODIMM module, CL11 2Rx8 512Mx8 (Part no. TS1GSK64V6H). This is 1.5V module. I have already plugged in this module and system now shows 12GB of RAM  Do note that the RAM ICs on the PCB are Hynix brand and the product is Transcend. Here are the screenshots of CPU-Z tool on Windows 7 Home Professional OS.

After a trip abroad, my laptop suddenly stopped powering on. I brought it home, connected it to a charger, and then tried turning it on. The power light flashed on but nothing happened, so I held it down to hard boot it, let it rest for a minute, and tried turning it on again. Except now nothing at all happens. I've tried buying a new charger, removing the connection of the BIOS battery/laptop battery and holding down the power button for 30 seconds with the battery removed, but it's all to no avail. I notice that when I plug the laptop in, the battery light flashes green a few times. After letting the computer rest for some time, I noticed that when I hit the power button, the green battery light would come on and stay on. However, the fan does not spin up and it gives no obvious signs of life (no other lights, beeps, no screen flashes, etc). The area around the CPU does appear to get warm, however, when plugged in (the heatsink in particular felt hot). The warmth around the CPU area and the flashing battery light lead me to believe that the motherboard is still functional. I fully disassembled and reassembled the laptop with only bare parts but it didn't help. I also peeled off the black sticker shielding to see if there were any obvious signs of damage, such as blown capacitors, but found nothing out of the ordinary. What is wrong with my laptop? Do I just need to go ahead and replace the motherboard? Did I void the 3-year limited warranty with my reassembly... Read more

Answer:Thinkpad x230 won't power on

After all, the battery connects straight to the motherboard, and so does AC power, so it would have to be at least partially functional to give any signs of life via the flashing green battery symbol, no?

Answer:Thinkpad X230 - Maximum RAM

Welcome Jon!The processor you describe could also be used on laptops with 4 memory slots. (8GB x 4 DIMM), therefore techinically the processor supports up to 32GB of RAM.However, ThinkPad X230 motherboard only provides 2 memory slots, which is pretty normal for lightweight machines. Usually, only 15" high-powered machines such as W540 provides option for 4 memory slots. Therefore, you are limited to 16GB on X230.Hope this answers your question.

Hello guys I am ready to order ThinkPad x230 from Lenovo.de but the only option for the battery is 29, 29+ and 29++. Will there be a problem or can I continue with the order?

Answer:Thinkpad X230 and 29++ battery

The ThinkPad X230 uses 44, 44+ or 44++ batteries. The 29 series batteries are only made for ThinkPad X220. The 29 batteries in the X230 will not charge, as it will be seen as NON-authentic battery. http://www.thinkscopes.com/29-29-or-29-batteries-in-the-thinkpad-x230/

Hello,I have Thinkpad X230 with Core i5-3320m and wonder if i can upgrade the CPU.The information I have found on the subject is quite controversial. Some sites say that the CPU is soldered to the motherboard, and others say that it is possible.Anyone know some information about it? If this is possible I had thought of these two CPUs: i7-3632qm  and i7-3820qm.The first is 35W, so I not see anyproblem(which carries the notebook is also 35W).The second one is 45W ,so maybe it is not very appropriate. What you think about this?

I have recently update my Thinkpad x230 to windows 10, the problem is that the two usb 3 ports are not working. When i am plugging a flash drive i can see the led turning on but nothing else happens. The flash drive works vell in usb 2 port. Is it a drivers problem?

Hello! I hope that somebody from Lenovo will look at this... Tuesday this weekend i needed to replace FAN & LCD display. Service gives me TN display instead of IPS that i had. so i looked at it and i see that on lenovo website it show me this: "Processor: 3rd Generation Intel Core i5-3230M Processor(2.6GHz, 3MB): : Memory: 4GB PC3-12800: : Operating System: Windows 7 Professional 64(GR:German): : Hard Drive: 500 GB 5400: : Wired Network: Integrated Intel 82579LM Gigabit Network Adapter: : Wireless Network: WAN Upgradeable; Intel Centrino Advanced-N 6205 (2x2 AGN 300Mbps): : Ports: External Microphone Headphone Line-In/out Combo Jack; 1 USB 2.0 (Constant Power); External Display (VGA); RJ-45; Docking/Port Replicator; Display port; 2 USB 3.0: : Form Factor: Notebook: : Included Warranty: 3Yr 1Yr Bat OSR" But I have Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-3520M CPU @ 2.90GHz.can you check it? because I am really disappointed by this. Now i have that ugly TN panel which have no contrast at all and hate it.. I want my IPS.

Have installed all of the relevant keyboard drivers on the Lenovo support site:

Function key commands are all busted save for Fn+F4 (sleep). Volume controls work but produce no on-screen display of the volume level changing, muting, etc. Device Manager sees the following:

Reluctant to uninstall the existing keyboard (requires restart) as I then can't enter a login PW or enter BIOS, or can I? Is that even the right course of action?

Any and all help greatly appreciated.

Answer:ThinkPad X230 Hotkey Drivers

http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/pro...books/thinkpad-x-series-laptops/thinkpad-x230
you probably need
1. Fingerprint Reader
2. HotKey Features Integration
3. Intel Chipset Support
4. Intel Graphics Driver (for the video glitch in your other thread)
5. Intel Management Engine
If it were me, I'd enter the serial number and then let the site post all the drivers for your X230.

Hello,  I have some laptops missing the strip of plastic above the camera.  I cannot seem to find a part number for this piece anywhere, including the HMM.  Any information you need I will do my best to provide.  Thank you.

Answer:Need help with a part number (Thinkpad x230)

Good afternoon.
Welcome to the community.

I looked through the HMM also, to see if there was any notation for the part you describe and found none either. In my previous experience, those types of parts may be included in a package called System Miscellaneous Parts Kit. Looking at the X230 FRU Parts List, page 3 shows such an item (FRU P/N 04W1418), but I have no way of knowing what's included in it.

Checking the FRU P/N on the Maintenance Parts Site, shows the kit is available for $19.50 + shipping, if you feel like taking a chance on it. Hopefully, another member will weigh in with additional details.

Hope this helps a bit.

I recently had a problem where my X230 i7 would not power up. It was sent away for repair under warranty. The repair centre replaced the system board and sent it back. I found that the original hard disk and the disks from my other 200 series laptop would not boot up. when I rang the support centre they said that the new level of system board is incompatible with existing disks. they then sent me a set of factory image DVDs which I installed successfully giving me the basic factory default installation. I then tried doing a restore of my original system onto this disk which was unsuccessful. I rang the support centre and described the problem they said that the new updated system board will not support a windows restore.I asked if this was going to affect other users who have new system boards fitted, to which they assumed that it would but I was probably the first to experience this.Just wanted others to know of this and to ask if anyone has a solution rather than re-installing all my programs and configuration from sctratch. Bob

Hi all!I have ThinkPad x230 with preinstalled 64-bit Windows 7. Laptop has UEFI support, but current mode is "Legacy". I want to replace HDD with SSD and also reinstall Windows using UEFI (later I also plan to install Linux as second OS).I've searched and found [url=http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Windows-7-Knowledge-Base/Prepare-an-usb-thumb-drive-to-boot-windows-7-in... article[/url] with nice instructions about switching to UEFI. But what about ThinkVantage functionality? In some articles I've found information that several features will be unavailable when UEFI used (for exmaple fingerprint reader). Is it safe to switch to UEFI?Thanks a lot and sorry for my bad English.

Answer:ThinkVantage on ThinkPad x230 with UEFI

If you plan to use Win7 there is no benefit to installing in UEFI mode.  The reason is, because Win7 itself requires the CSM (compatiblity support module) which is basically all of the legacy BIOS features, even when Win7 is installed in UEFI mode.

As for the fingerprint issues you read about in the forum, those were all fixed a while ago, so there won't be any issue.  But some other Lenovo apps, such as Rescue and Recovery, won't work on Win7 in UEFI mode.  And within Lenovo, we don't do any testing on Win7 UEFI mode, so I'm not sure what other problems you might run into.

My strong advice is to use legacy mode for Win7, and UEFI mode for Win8.

I have thinkpad x230 tablet, and I have mixed feeling about it. It is a quite powerful one, does most of the job but have too many design flaws - broken rubber latch after a while and rubber buffers in the bottom etc.,  I hate the new gen x240 laptop, especially the X series convertible laptop is discontinued. Stupid, in my opinion, yoga design. I, no way, want to flip the keyboard to any surface. Especially on a field trip. X240 discontinues Express Card slot, no thunderbolt, no digitizer. The removal of trackpoint 3 click buttons, which were combined with the trackpad. People complain a lot when they accidentally click the trackpad while typing. I am a trackpoint person, not trackpad person. So the removal was **** retarded, anti consumer, anti Thinkpad legacy!Pls, see this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jb7p3VkQCOo. I did not made this video but 100% agree with this guy.  In addition, it seems to me that newer generations Intel core processor (4th and upcoming 5th) was weeker than ivy bridge processor because Ivy Bridge processors are full power 35W, now, everything is low powered to save the battery life. I have a few questions: 1.Is there anyway, or any company that can make a better thinkpad x230 tablet screen (say upgrading the screen from 1366x768 to higher resolution, improving wacom pen digitizer on the edges 2. Is there any laptop on the market that has express card or thunderbolt, touch screen, digitize... Read more

Just installed Windows 8.1 Professional and tried to update all drivers via System Update. After that i installed latest Ericsson drivers (H5321 gw mobile broadband network adapter), and.... nothing! 3G is not working at all, because Windows says "Device cannot start. (code 10)" on MbmLowExt device. SIM card installed correctly and working perfectly on my phones.

OK, i found a solution. To enable 3G you should first install firmware update. Before doing so, make sure all network adapters are disabled - or just turn "Flight Mode" and flash new Ericsson firmware. Then install drivers as usual.

Hallo, I have a problem with my 3 yo X230 where the battery is fast empty, only 20 minutes from full charging although I only open 1 program (Excel/word/etc.). Should I change the battery ? In lenovoquickpick.com, the battery seems for type X230T (Part number: 0A36317). Can it be used for X230 ? From the picture shown in web, it is different from the battery installed in my laptop (4 cells). Now I am in Germany and quit difficult to find Lenovo people who can speak English well. Thank you

I am looking to upgrade my laptop's wireless card to support 802.11ac. Would the bios allow it, if so can someone recommend a card I should buy?

Answer:Upgrading WWAN on the ThinkPad X230

the bios won't allow it, since Lenovo never whitelisted an an AC capable card in the X230, X230t, etc.

I am leaning towards buying a Lenovo thinkpad x230 with 6 cell main battery as well as a 44++ 9 cell battery and a 19+ six cell battery configuration (6 +9+6 cell battery configuration). My queries are1. Can all three of the batteries work in conjunction without any issues?2. Do i need to charge the batteries separately or they all get charged simultaneously while i plug a charger in the laptop?3. Is there any other battery option ( like a 9 cell main plus a 44++ 9 cell and a 19+ 6 cell, i.e. 9+9+6 cells) that can work ?

Recently I purchased x230. My 3G is not working. I don't find any device on device manager. How do I know, which built in 3g module is installed on my laptop? or is there any option to enable it? I saw the specification, it is showing the 3g is in built. Please help me out. I put my sim, but no luck.

Answer:ThinkPad X230 WWAN card for 3G

If your laptop model isn't CTO follow the link below and type in Machine-Type-Model (MTM) within Quick Path field:http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/default.pageIf short description of your laptop specification includes "WWAN" statement wwan card SHOULD be factory preinstalled. "WWAN option" isn't the same, it means laptop is WWAN ready, i.e.has built in wwan antennas and sim card holder only, but not the card itself.Follow this link:http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/product-and-parts/partsLookup.pageType in your laptop serial number and find out WWAN card model if it was preinstalled into your laptop. You might find out something like the strings below depending of your area:04W3785 - Gobi300004W3786 - H5321gw04W3788 - MC770004W3791 - MC775004W3792 - MC770004W3821 - Sierra MC771060Y3257 - Gobi3 WWAN60Y3267 - F5521 Mal60Y3297 - H5321w

These are Lenovo approved wwan cards p/ns (FRU) for x230 and their short descriptions
Post here your results, we'll see what to do further.

It's been about 5 months since I started to use my Thinkpad  X230.  Only three days ago it could work for 5-6 hours without charging.  I could charge it at home, bring it to school and use it without charging.  But suddenly the battery started to die in a short amount of time.  Then I explored the battery settings a little bit.  I found out it says "Battery Condition: poor" and "Your battery can 47% of its original full charge capacity."   It has warranty until 2015. So can Lenovo send me a new battery if I want so? Or is it a problem that warranty doesn't cover? Please help!!

Answer:Thinkpad X230 Battery issues

Well, a few things. 1.  The warranty you mention sounds like it is for the system.  The system and battery typically have different warranty terms.  Unless of course you did order an additional battery warranty. 2.  However, the base battery warranty is one year, so if you contact them they should get you a replacement since you are only a few months into ownership. Good luck!

I want to use my laptop like a desktop so only with the 2 attached monitors and the lid closed. You can configure Windows so that shutting the lid doesn't turn it off but I still need to open it up to turn it on. My desk arrangement makes this a bit tricky (it's under a monitor stand).  If I buy the Ultrabase Series 3 Docking Station, a power button appears on the front. Would I be able to turn it on without opening the lid if I used that?

Hi,I've bought a used Lenovo X230 & it came without the hard drive for security reasons.I've then bought a new corsair force GT 90gb SSD & hooked up an external dvd/cd rom & inserted the Windows 7 Ultimate x64 disc & started to install the Windows.I then after around 5 minutes get a message that Windows can't be installed :-/Now when I turn on the Thinkpad I keep getting the "BOOTMGR is missing Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart" If I press ENTER I can get in to BIOS,but it never gives me the option to boot from my Toshiba external drive even with it showing in BIOS.How can I get the Thinkpad to boot from the disc again ?I have the Toshiba drive as 1st boot option, but it does not give me a message like "Press any key to boot from dvd" like I would on my PC etc..................... Any help more than welcome.

Answer:Help with Thinkpad X230 booting problem :-/

As it won't let me install on the corsair SSD,I've just tried a brand new 250gb WD 2.5" HDD & for some reason it does not fit :-/ Why is this ? The WD is a little chunkier than the SSD but I would have thought all 2.5 SSD's & HDD's would fit in to this netbook.

Basicall Im using the WINAIAPACKAGE.exe to write the smbios asset tag and this was succesfull and confirmed it was indeed written to the bios.  But when you do a wmi query on the device using wmic systemenclosure get smbiosassettag it returns back "No Asset Information"  This is working on all the over lenovo laptops i have come across except for this x230 any ideas what could be going on as this is a pretty standard field and is used as part of an automated build process.

Hey hi After finally recovering my system to factory settings. I have a question and please bear with me. If i upgrade(not clean install) to windows 8 pro, how will it affect my Lenovo_Recovery partition? Will I be able to if in case required,  revert back to my windows 7 factory setting using F11 keys during boot up? Or this functionality will get erased and my recovery partition will be of no use. Also if i do clean install, I have read it that your windows will not activate as its an upgrade. In that case you need to call Microsoft and explain them your predicament and if its your lucky day you might get it activated. There are some other methods probably not legal to overcome this. Please share your view on that. Also how would re-clean install will affect the activation/system? Please reply. Thanks in advance.

Answer:Thinkpad X230 Windows 8 pro upgrade

Hi, neeraj_schrody

I've never personally done this upgrade, but I think it should technically work like you think it would. If an upgrade to Windows 8 is performed, then this should be installed over the partition that Windows 7 is using, which is not the recovery partition. If you made sure that the recovery partition was not formatted during the upgrade, then I believe it would remain there and the system would be recoverable through this. However, please keep in mind that this is what should be technically possible and is my thoughts, not a fact.

As far as the activation goes, I do not think you will run into any issues. These errors in your post normally only occur when certain criteria for updating are not met. Provided you are running a legitimate copy of Windows 7, which you are, there should be no issues when upgrading.

Hope it helps,Adam
