I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Lenovo Think Pad x230 and mSATA SSD

Hi, odessit

This should be possible. There is a slot for an mSATA drive in the X230, as shown here. Also shown in that link is that an mSATA is a user-replaceable part. After purchasing your SSD, then all you will need to do is install it per the instructions here (pp. 70) Also, you will likely need to download this firmware update after installing the drive. This will allow the BIOS to recognize the SSD if you plan to use it as the C: drive of the system. The update can be found here.

Hope it helps,
Adam

Question: msata for x230

Hi Guys,my x230 is equipped only with HDD. Is it possible to add a msata drive for cache? Can I do this by myself?Regards

Answer:msata for x230

Easily done. You'll need a cross point screwdriver to remove the keyboard and palmrest and it installs where the WWAN card would go.  Adding a mSATA card may cause you warranty woes down the road as it is not - technically - a customer replaceable unit.

Hi, I've just get mynew X230 and I've replaced my harddrive with my "old" M4 512Gb SSD with if fineAs I'm using a lot virtual machines, 512 is not as lot and I would be definitively more confortable with more extrac space. I've bought a Wintec 128Gb ExpressCard ssd but the wintect support just told me there is a bug between Wintec/Lenovo and the drive don't show after a cold boot (I need to remove and put back the disk to make if work) ... so not a solution for me... I should be refund back. I now relalize that there is a mSata port in the laptop.I would like to buy this http://www.memoryc.com/storage/solidstatedisk/256gbmydigitalssdbp3bulletproof3msata.html(256GB MyDigitalSSD BP3 Bullet Proof 3 mSATA) but I would like to be sure that it could fit ... Does someone know it this mSata SSD could fit in th X230t ? As it will be less powerfull than my main SSD, can I just keep it a a secondary drive and still booting from my main one ? Thanks for any help on the subject

Answer:x230 with mSATA SSD

gaelsainson,1. you can fit that drive into your laptop if it doesn't cosist internal wwan card2. yes, of courseFor me that drive is a bit expensive especially if we'll see at drive data interface - x230 has sata 2 (3 gb/s) interface only in slot for msata drive. But that drive is compatible with sata 2.

Hello there,  Looking at the samsung 840 1tb msata.   Do you think this is compatable with the x230? No mention of a maximum size that I can find. Thanks

Answer:1tb mSATA compatible with x230?

If the 1TB model is the same physical size as smaller capacity models then I can't see why it wouldn't work in an X230. If you're apprehensive then buy from a reputable seller like http://www.amazon.co.uk/Samsung-mSATA-Solid-State-Drive/dp/B00HFD9CM2/ that has a liberal return policy.

I bought mSATA SSD to speed up my x230, I planned to install OS and most used programs on SSD and keep HDD as data storage, but I have problems with OS installation (Win10) to SSD and booting ntb from this SSD. Is there some problem (i read somewhere that this mSATA is not bootable what sounds pretty stupid to me)? Is somewhere step-by-step instruction how to install windows on mSATA? Thanks...

Answer:x230 mSATA - bootable?

It is bootable.  You need to make sure the bootloader is also on it.  First, back up any needed user data.  The easiest way is wipe the mSATA drive or remove all partitions.  Clear the 2.5" drive and  remove it from the machine, and then do an install with the mSATA as the only drive in the machine.  Install the 2.5"drive and it will be a data drive.

I'd like to upgrade my x230 with a SSD drive. My model is the NZD79MS with built-in 3G WWAN and a 500 GB HDD. I'm wondering if I have the option to add an mSATA SSD to use as system drive and keep the supplied HDD as secondary data drive, or if the mSATA space is occupied with the WWAN module. I really don't want to lose the 3G functionality or use an external dongle for 3G connectivity, so sacrificing the WWAN module is not an option. I haven't been able to find this information: can I have both WWAN and mSATA SSD at the same time on my x230?

I gather in some parts of the world you can get an X230 with an HDD and an SSD (in place of the WWAN adapter) from the factory, but not in the US.  So, I'm thinking of doing it myself.  My plan would be to add the SSD before installing any of my own s/w, then move the OS from the HDD to the SSD with something like this (http://www.paragon-software.com/technologies/components/migrate-OS-to-SSD/).  Set the HDD to unbootable in the BIOS and I'm pretty much done.  I'd be interested in hearing comments from those who've done this, or who might have some advice even if they haven't.  Thanks.

Answer:Adding an mSATA SSD to an X230

Migrating part of a disk (like only the OS) is pretty tricky and often fraught with problems. Me? I'd rather install everything I want directly to the mSATA drive directly or image the hdd and copy it to the mSATA after removing the hdd.

I've read through the HMM and it says that if one so chooses, they can add an mSATA drive.  However, the HMM also says "If the computer is equipped with both a hard disk drive and an mSATA solid-state drive, do not use themSATA solid-state drive as a bootable device. The mSATA solid-state drive is used for the ?cache?function only." Now, I know this is not completely true as many on this forum have used the mSATA as a storage and a bottable drive. My question is this.  When plugging in the mSATA, is there anything special one must do?  Since it apparently looks like the x230 will automatically try to make it a cache drive, do I have to do anything to ensure it is used as a boot device with the SSD as a storage drive?

In addition, the mSATA card would take the place of your WWAN card so you can't have both. AFAIK, there are no supported drivers in the US to turn the mSATA into a cache and I know of no retail product available. There are a few Lenovo drivers downloadable for the 16GB ssd but those don't technically apply to the x230. The mSATA works fine as a boot drive even if it isn't officially sanctioned. UPDATE - the most recently released driver does reference the x230 but apparently requires an activation code that presumeably only comes with the 16GB cache ssd sold by Lenovo.

Hi everyone, I've got a CTO x230 on its way and was reading a bit about adding an mSATA SSD to the available slot under the palmrest.  In these forums I've seen a couple posts here telling people that if they have 2 drives installed and want to run the R&R software, that they should remove the drive they don't plan on installing to. Since I'm a tinkerer and will probably be reformatting/imaging every couple weeks or so, is there a better way than just pulling the main hard drive or msata drive from the machine to recover it properly?  What about removing the drive from the boot order in the BIOS until the R&R software has completed? Looking to avoid opening up the case anymore than just the first time installing.  I'd be interested to hear some opinions on this.

Answer:x230 mSATA SSD rescue and recovery

Perhaps we need to clarify a few things here. In order to set up the mSATA As your boot drive, you'll want to pull the existing hard drive. Once the mSATA is set up as your "C" drive and you've given the hdd a new drive letter and changed the boot sequence then there really Isn't much reason to pull drives. As a tinkered, you'll also not want to use the rescue and recovery software in the future anyway as that will restore the computer to delivery condition. What you'll want to do is make that r and r media and put it away in a safe place. Then you'll want to set up your drives as you want them, image them and use that image for restore. You'll probably also want to make an image of a clean install of Windows. You should only need to pull drives in the future if you change boot orders and drive letters.. Even then it may not be necessary if you do it right but pulling the hard drive is the easiest way of setting up the mSATA.

Hello, new to Lenovo (sorry for my English).Ordered X230 2306CTO machine on BLACKFRIDAY. I would like to upgrade the HDD performance by adding mSATA SSD used as cache.I know its no longer a CRU device (as has been for x220).I have a few questions:1. How do I choose a compatible mSATA-SSD?2. As far as I know, the original smart cache on the X230 is performed by [email protected] (but there are other possebilities too like DATAPLEX) . How would I make sure that my X230 chipset (which I dont know what it is, QM77 or HM77?) and my potential mSATA-SSD controller are compatible to make this smart cache operations? btw the potential mSATA-SSDs I was thinking of are : Crucial 32Gb or ADATA30gb Thank you

Answer:X230 - Which mSATA SSD cache best with 320gb HDD

Rather than using the mSATA as a cache, I would get a larger mSATA and move the OS and frequently used programs to that drive and relegate the hdd to be data storage only.

Hi, this might seem like a silly question, but I was unable to find a clear answer through Google.1) I am planning to put an mSATA onto my X230, however I realized that the mSATA slot only supports SATA II. Is it still possible to purchase SATA III and run it in the X230's mSATA slot? 2) If I ordered an X230 without the backlit keyboard, does this still include the Thinklight? I personally don't find the backlighting necessary for my needs, and would simply just use the Thinklight instead. Thanks!

Answer:X230 mSATA & Backlight inquiry

1) You can run SATAIII in SATAII speed. Don't worry it will work. 2) Yes all X230 have thinklight, whether or not you go the backlit keyboard or not.

Spoiler (Highlight to read)  Hi... I've got a couple of questions regarding the X230 offered in Singapore, which comes with a msata ssd:"Up to 5x Boost 32GB Micro Solid State Drive Outperforms 5400rpm Drive "I AM assuming this is a msata ssd? http://shopap.lenovo.com/SEUILibrary/controller/e/sgweb/LenovoPortal/en_SG/special-offers.workflowho... 1) Given the limited size of this msata SSD (32GB), can I assume that only the operating system (Win 7) is installed here by default? What about the folders under "My Documents", "My Pictures" and etc. Are they also installed into the SSD by default? I tend to leave all my work documents in that file, and it fills up pretty fast. 2) I assume that the recovery partition is still located in the 320GB SATA HDD(7200rpm)? 3) When I do a recovery from the Lenovo rescue/recovery programme (from the recovery partition), will Win 7 install correctly into the SSD, and not the HDD. 4) If I do a factory recovery using the recovery DVDs (which I will create as soon as I receive the x230), will everything be installed correctly? Windows 7 to SSD and recovery partition to HDD? Thank you for your time!

Answer:X230: Questions regarding included 32GB msata SSD

the expressways software would make the 32 gigs mSATA a drive cache for the main HDD. Nothing is really installed on the mEATS, only files that are frequently used or predicted to be used frequently will be replicated on the mSATA.

Hi, I have a x230 with a 320gb HDD (7500 rpm) and want to replace it with a SSD to have a completely silent machine. Right now, most of the time the only noise I hear from the machine is the HDD spinning and TP Fancontrol shows that mostly the fans aren't spinning at all. I can afford a 128gb SSD but I am confused if I should replace the HDD with a SSD or supplement it with a mSATA SSD and install Windows there, instead. The latter would of course give me 320gb of HDD space, which would be nice, but my priority is silence, so I need to know if the HDD can be powered down completely except when I need files from it? If the HDD wakes up now and then because of some hidden windows process I can't control, I would rather just go with a regular SSD instead of the mSATA SSD. I can live with less space. Does anyone have experience with this? Thanks

Hi, I recently installed a Crucial M4 256gb mSATA SSD onto my X230. I already have the 128gb SSD that originally came with the laptop and it would startup really quickly at first. I installed it by slotting it into the mSATA slot, the computer recognized it right away, I formatted it and was able to use it right away. But now when I startup from a power off, it takes a lot longer booting up windows. It used to be that the four coloured globes wouldn't even make the windows flag before it started, now it makes the windows flag and sits there for a bit. I just ordered a couple of x230 units and kept the default 320gb HD and 4gb RAM as I was planning on upgrading to a SATA drive and either 8 or 16gb of RAM. Now, of course, I've become intrigued with an mSATA drive as a boot device and keeping the 320gb in place for data. What should I move to the mSATA drive? Windows? Windows and programs? Windows and frequently used programs? Quite frankly, this will be a MS Office Suite machine primarily with just a touch of Photoshop. Taking memory bloat in the future into consideration, I assume that a 128gb mSATA would be quite sufficient - correct? I got a killer deal on 16gb memory modules but only one set was available. I intend to use the spare 4gb from one machine in the other, giving me one machine with 8GB and one with 16. Will there be any discernable difference using normal Office software? I'm intending to create my configuration on one of the 320GB hard drives and cloning that image to both mSATA drives. I would then activate the software on each machine. That'll allow me to only have to back up the HD in the future and have an image that I can restore to either of the machines if one of the drives fail. Does that make sense?

I have a new X230 3206-A31 bought in Hong Kong. I am using the stock configuration with 32GB mSATA for cache and 500 GB HDD for OS and storage, which I love by the way.  I have activated "30 day standby" in Power Manager and disabled hibernation as that only seemd to take it into proper HDD hibernation mode with some 30 sec resume time.I studied the advice in an older post form from "someotherguy" to determine if the mSATA partition is set up properly. http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/T400-T500-and-newer-T-series/T430s-30-day-standby-how-to-determine-it-is... I tried to uninstall Power manager and change the Intel Rapid Start setting in BIOS to immediately which does take it into first sleep and then immediately back up and into deep sleep (no power button LED and flashing LED during resume) even though it took a dissapointing 10 sec to resume from it.After re-installing Power Manager it doesn't work at all again even after the three hours preset by power manager. Hello, I previously had a Y580 and it had a mSata slot. I'm looking to replace this laptop with the Y50. This one in particular:http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00VBOCHQO/ref=sr_ob_1?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1440447921&sr=1-1 Does this have mSata? If not, are there two drive bays? Not quite sure what an 8GB SSD can do for me if you cant even install windows on it. Thanks!

Answer:Lenovo Y50 - mSata support?

hi jbedsted,

Welcome to the Forums.

The Lenovo Y50 Series (which includes the Machine Type Model 59442856) uses a regular SATA III (6Gbps) port for its hard drive and uses the 2.5" form factor (see page 26 of the HMM)
    - Link to picture

As for the HDD, this unit only uses one bay.
   - Link to picture (Y50 internal view)

The 8GB SSD on the other hand (from the HDD configuration 1TB+8GB) acts as a cache for frequently accessed files (you won't be able to install Windows on the cache).

If you're looking for an SSD Upgrade, perhaps you may want to consider getting a 256GB SSD (like this item) or bigger

Regards

Question: Lenovo Z510 mSATA

I just ordered a new lenovo Z510 last week, and I have about a week to go before I recieve it, but I wanted to add an mSATA to the machine to speed it up a bit, so if I were to get an mSATA,  would it be compatable with my hardware, and how would you put it in? Thank you for your help.

Answer:Lenovo Z510 mSATA

hi KanyeMiddleEast,

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

I don't think that the unit does not have another MPCIE aside from where the WLAN is.

What you could do is a 2.5 SSD as an HDD Replacement

Hope this helps
Cheers!

Hi All! I'm sorry to sound like a bit of a newb here, but i'm looking for a little bit of assistance with my x230 laptop.  I bought the laptop back in september with windows 7 professional.  A couple months later, I upgraded to windows 8 only to not really like it too much and decide for now I want to revert back to Windows 7.  Not knowing what my options were, I installed Windows 7 Ultimate back on the machine through an external cd drive, but now I'm missing about 100gb from my main drive, I ordered a 500gb 7200 rpm drive but now I only have about 350 GB available after the clean install.  I wasn't too sure how the recovery options on the x230 worked.  I see that next to my main C drive, there is another drive there located "Recovery" It has about 75% of the disk space being taken up but there is absolutely nothing within the actual drive when I actually click it.  It's probably too late, but is there any way to actually take my laptop back to the way it was when I first bought it? I only ask because it seems there's something on that recovery drive but I just can't figure out what it is.  I would appreciate any help at all, I'm sorry for sounding like such a newb with this stuff!

Answer:Lenovo x230 Recovery

Hi, Flyerfan16

If you are viewing your drives in Disk Management, how big is the Recovery partition? The partitions from Lenovo are normally between 7 GB and 10 GB when the machine ships. If the original partition is still on the drive, then you should be able to recover to the settings when the machine was first purchased.

You can attempt recovery by starting the machine as normal and then pressing Enter repeatedly to interrupt startup. A menu should then appear, with an option available to recover your system. Press the associated key for this action and then follow the prompts. If all works well, you should be able to go back to the way it was. If you choose this option, make sure to back up all files that you wish to keep that are currently on the system.

Hope it helps,
Adam

Question: Lenovo X230 setup

Hi, everyone,A quick question. I have an x230 on the way and am looking to set up my workspace in a specific way. Here is what I want: an external monitor that will allow me to move the cursor from the laptop screen to the other monitor. So, in essence, a dual monitor set-up but with the laptop screen as one of the monitors. I would also like to be able to use a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse while in this set-up. Do I need the UltraSeries 3 dock, or something else? Thanks!Parker

Answer:Lenovo X230 setup

Hi, Parker

You should be able to accomplish this without a docking station. The X230 supports a dual independent display and has a VGA port and a Mini DisplayPort. So if you have a monitor with one of these connections and hook it up to your laptop, then it should work. You will need to make sure that you Extend the display and not Duplicate it. Duplicate will give you the same image on both screens. You can just use Win + P to set it appropriately.

As for the Bluetooth keyboard and mouse, you should have no issues here either. Provided Bluetooth is turned on in the system and you have compatible Bluetooth peripherals, it should work like a charm once they've been paired.

Hope it helps,
Adam

Hello,So, first of all, I'm not english, so I'm sorry for the following mistakes.Let's start.1 year ago I've bought a lenovo x230 netbook with Windows 8, intel core i7 + 8 gb ram + SSD. [still using these specs]Okay. After 1 month of usage, the display started to have some problems. From the left to right, the 3/7 part of the display is changing in all the colors while using. It depends on what color is the page opened. If it's white, this part of the display is black with some "running" white lines, if it's blue - red and so on.No problem ; acording to the warranty, the display has been changed. It was ok.Since august 2014 I didn't use the laptop again. I started using it in April 2015. In may, the display started to have that problem again, but I've read on your forum that I need to put the display on 60Hz and on High performance mode to fix it, and that's what I did. At the beggining of June, the problem was back, and it is still on 60Hz and high performance mode.3 days ago, my laptop started to make another problem ; CHARGING.It doesn't want to charge.  If I just plug in, it stays with the battery on 0%, and it doesn't open because of the missing electricity, but I've realised something. If I move the end of the charger [near the part which get into that yellow circle where the end of the charger must be, hope you understand] higher than 10-15 CMs it DOES charge. But now it doesn't charge even if I put it in the position I've said before.  Just did shut down on my lenovo x230. When restarting the PC by pressing the power button, he looks like he is restarting, then nothing happens. Hardware buttons not active, screen is black. Nothing I can do... PC doesn't react to anything. Was working fine before shut down. What is wrong??? What can I do? Help!

Answer:lenovo x230 - Does not boot!!!

fre_madrid,1. unplug power cable and battery, press and hold the power button during 30 sec, plug the battery and cable again, try to boot laptop.2. OR if you are familiar with disassembling of keyboard and palmrest do it, then unplug connector of small yellow battery under palmrest (near FPR) during several minuts. Assemble the laptop and try to boot. If laptop will boot go to BIOS setup, press F9 and save default settings, set and save your settings. If that actions will not resolve the issue I'm afraid you have to contact with Lenovo support.

I recently ordered a Y580 laptop.  It came with a 1tb hdd but I'm looking to add a ssd along side it.  To my knowledge (please let me know if I'm wrong), in order to have an hdd and a sdd in the laptop, I need to buy some sort of mSATA ssd.  My question is, are the following mSATA drives compatible to do this?  I assume they are... mSATA drives My plan is to install the ssd and wipe both the hdd and ssd, then reinstall my operating system on the ssd.  Let me know if you guys think there's a smarter way of doing that. Thanks for all the help!

Answer:Lenovo Y580 Compatible mSATA SSD's

Hi

Welcome To Lenovo Community

There's no size constraint on the mSATA connection in your pc
The only thing is you will need a screw (1 or 2) to keep the SSD down

i bought  intel ssd msata 60 gb- and it seems like its to big for the pcie msata thats in lenovo thinkpad edge e531 .some one has suggestion? is the prcie for the msata in this computer is hidden?thx

Answer:problen with msata in lenovo thinkpad

Turn the thinkpad over and there is a rectangular cover about 4.5" (110mm) by 1.5" (40mm) near the upper left side with a single screw.  The mSATA connector is under that cover. The mSATA ssd is about 1"(25mm) by 2"(50mm). If you haven't done so I suggest downloading the user manual from the support section.  If contains some vary useful information on FRU's (Field Replaceable Units).

I saw that we have the mSata slot and is empty for my Y580. If i buy a SSD mSata drive that run at 6G/S.  Will it work?i plan to buy a mSata drive with 6G/s to install the window 8 in it. The existing 2.5" Sata drive will used for data storage. Will this work? how to setup?

Answer:Lenovo Y580, can mSata run 6G/s SSD drive?

I never got my windows 8 y580 to boot from msata. I gave up. Older windows 7 y580 had no trouble with making their msata bootable. I know of a person with the same model as my y580 windows 8 and he got it to boot off of his msata drive but boot manager was actually on the HDD so he wasn't truely booting off of the msata. I couldn't even get that to work. My msata was an m4 256gb and it had no problems formatting and storing files, it just wouldn't boot an OS.

I recently purchased a refurbished Lenovo Yoga 11s from Tiger Direct along with an 8 GB RAM upgrade and a 480 GB Crucial mSATA SSD.  The RAM replacement was easy.  However, I have tried for three weeks to clone, reinstall, or recover my OS installation to the new SSD, and everything has failed.  I?ve done extensive research on this forum and others but can?t find a solution.

The 11s came with Windows 8 on a 128 GB mSATA SSD.  I updated it to 8.1 and installed a bunch of my own apps before attempting the clone.  The 480 GB Crucial SSD definitely works.  I have an external USB enclosure and when it?s inserted it reads just fine on multiple machines.  I disabled Fast Boot and Secure Boot and have experimented with both Legacy and UEFI boot modes.

Here?s what I?ve tried:
1. Cloning via Easeus Todo Backup directly through Windows 8.  The clone appeared to be successful but the new drive wouldn?t boot.  I tried boot repair using both a Lenovo and a standard Windows Recovery USB that I made before beginning all of this.  In each case Startup Repair says it can?t find the required partition.  Also, the BIOS doesn?t recognize the new SSD when I have a Recovery USB inserted.

2. Cloning by booting directly to a Clonezilla Live USB.  Again, the clone appeared successful but after swapping the SSDs the new one wouldn?t boot, and both Recovery USBs wouldn?t work.

Answer:Can't Upgrade Lenovo Yoga 11s mSATA SSD

Hello and welcome,

How was the USB flash(?) drive prepared in #5?  At least BIOS recognized the new SSD in that try. If I'm reading this correctly...

Unless you've already done this, here's what I would try for #6: install the new SSD.  Prepare a USB flash drive thusly: single partition formatted FAT32.  Copy the contents of a Win 8 ISO (or maybe your existing flash drive) to it.  Restore the BIOS to defaults:  UEFI and secure boot on.  Try to boot the new flash drive.

Have you updated the SSD's firmware?

Nope, mSATA doesn't fit! The E531 and E540 has only a slot for the new small SSDs, called NNGF ssd respectively M.2 ssd! Moreover it mustn't be longer than 42 mm. I have a Lenovo x230 laptop with an i7 processor that starts the second time. This means that when you first turn on, there is a black screen. The restart must be forced and then normally turns on. I tried to use an external screen, tricks with disconnecting the battery and pressing the switch, CMOS battery, RAM memory replacement - nothing did not succeed. On this motherboard, the service replaced the BIOS chips due to failure in the upgrade. They said that the computer would not work anyway. The computer, however, works, but after the second launch - which is annoying. I have updated the BIOS on my own, which did not solve the problem. Once the computer starts, it works very steadily and without problems. I have not found a similar case anywhere on the internet.

Will there be any chance that i can still recover the whole keyboard? since i tried to use other keyboard (same model) and it worked. also the power button does not function anymore.  Thanks thanks

i have upgraded  X230 harddrive and installed OS from Backup, my fingerprint did work fine after upgrade for 3 month after that fingerprint just started giving error  E7210005 (cannot enrolluser, cannot update passport, cannot find finger print sensor), but in the device mananger panel it show that it is workng properly, when i open biometrics in control panel it shows that my device is not availabe.(i have also allowed fingerprint port in the bios). i reinstalled windows, update finger print drivers and software (from lenovo and also tried the ones from original manufacture-Authen tech). i tried to change the group policy setting, and also created new user wit admin privillages and also enabled all the sevice settings. but the problem error remains the same, it has been a moth now trying to search for solution but still nothing has come up. wat worries me is that the device manger shows that the FP device is working properly

Answer:Lenovo X230 FingerPrint Error

If you re-installed Windows and this problem still happens, I'd say there's a strong possibility that your fingerprint sensor has failed and needs to be replaced.  Even if the device looks OK in Device Manager, this really doesn't mean much.  All it means is that Windows can talk to the USB device that hosts the fingerprint sensor, but the fingerprint sensor itself could still be malfunctioning.

Some things that can help confirm hardware problem:
1.  Shut the system off, does fingerprint green LED flash slowly?  If so it means that the sensor contains some fingerprint templates so lets try to clear them.
2.  Turn the system on and press F1 to enter BIOS setup
3.  Go to the Security menu and choose Fingerprint, then clear the fingerprint sensor.  You should see a message about success or failure.  Failure definitely means HW problem.
4.  If you see a message about success clearing the fingerprint sensor from BIOS, then shut the system off again.  The green LED should not be flashing anymore because you cleared the sensor in BIOS.  If the green LED still flashes, then it means HW problem because the fingerprint templates were not really cleared.

So try the above steps to try to confirm the HW problem, or just call service in your country and request help.

I have a Lenovo ThinkPad X230 (which I love dearly) and have a few question about ports and booting.  I would first like to verify that the port on the left side of the laptop directly above one of the USB ports is indeed an ExpressCard 54.  I have searched the web, but have yet to find a definite answer, and my user manual simply stated "ExpressCard."  Furthermore, I would like to know if it is possible to boot an operating system from said port using an ExpressCard 34 SSD (64GB).  I have the intention of installing openSUSE 12.3 to the potential SSD and be able to boot from it.  I greatly appreciate any help.  I  would post an image of said port, but I am being told the image file is much too large.

Hey everyone!I ordered a x230 a few weeks ago and i realized i need bluetooth! I know i can purchase a dongle for a few dollars but i rather keep my USB ports free.Anyone know where I can purchase a bluetooth card so i can install it myself? - Or is it advised not to do that. What do you think I should do?

Answer:Lenovo x230 missing bluetooth!

2 options come to my mind1) you can look for bluetooth expresscard (x220 has a slot, so I'm guessing x230 has it as well)2) you can put it in mini-PCIe slot (for the WWAN card or mSATA SSD), assuming it's empty now, ie. you purchased without WWAN

Hi, I have a Lenovo Thinkpad E530 laptop and I want to install a mSATA SSD as boot drive and make a clean Windows 7 install on it, and to use the HDD drive only for data storage. I want to know if this is possible or mSATA is only for cache purposes and if somebody here has done it before.  Thanks a lot.Pablo

Answer:mSATA SSD as boot drive in Lenovo E530

It's really crazy. I have E531. I also want to buy SSD drive. And cannot understand which one - mSATA or just ssd sata to replace the HDD. I wouldn't mind to keep both. But with all that support, there is no clear explanation if I can buy lets say samsung 840 evo msata drive and install it in that slot. Can I? Or I should just buy 840 evo ssd sata and replace the hdd?

Answer:Do Lenovo A540 Model AIO support mSata SSD ?

Hi Arowanateck,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

There is no mSATA SSD support for the base model.

Storage specification shows: Some: SATA 6.0Gb/s, 2.5" Wide, 5400 rpmSome: SATA 6.0Gb/s, 2.5" Wide, 5400 rpm, Solid State Hybrid Drive (SSHD) / with 8GB NAND ?ash memoryExternal optical with slim DVD±RWSerial ATA, SATA 6.0Gb/s support, integrated in processor

Additional reference :
A540 FRU lists (page 43)  msata not offered.

Alternate solutions:
mSATA SSD to 2.5-Inch SATA Adapter similar to this .
however no reviews yet  done on a A540 board.
Generally this may help .
But technically speaking ,  recommended are ones declared on the hardware manual.

Hope you find this helpful.

Hi, I'd like to install a proper SSD hard drive instead of the built-in 32GB SSD Cache drive. In the manual I've read, that it is not recommended/possible, to install a mSATA disk as a boot disk. Why is it not possible to use the internal mSATA slot for booting? Is it going to destroy anything or doesn't it work properly or which reason prevents the usage of the internal mSATA slot instead of the SSD cache?

Hello. I have a Lenovo B590 (Model Name 3761 - Intel 2020M, 2GB RAM, 320GB HDD). I want to upgrade it and i have thought to put some more ram and a SDD drive.  About the RAM, the module present is a 2GB SK.Hynix PC12800. Its manual states that it is a 1.5v module. Mi intention is to put 8GB (2x4GB modules) but I'm not sure if I have to install 1.5V modules or I can use 1.35V modules. About the SSD, I read in the Hardware Maintenance Manual that this laptop is supposed to have an mSATA connector, on the left of the wifi board. But in my unit, i can see some elecctronics but the mSATA phisycal conector is not present. So, has the B590 mSATA interface or not? Where is my mSATA connector? If I can't use an mSATA I would use a normal SSD in a caddy in the place of the DVD unit. These caddy units come in two different thickness 12.7mm and 9.5mm. Which one should I use? Thanks for all.

I have a question about upgrading my U410. I currently have installed the 24 gb mSATA SSD that came with the system and it is being utilized as a cache using the intel rapid storage setup and the 2.5 slot is occupied with the 1TB HDD that came with the system. I now want to purchase a Samsung 850 Evo and realize that it comes in both Sata and mSata variants. My question is on the U410 system would there be any speed benefit (assuming the same specs for the two variants of the Samsung SSD) in going with the mSata vs Sata version? Specfically, assuming all other variables equal, is the mSata pcie port slower than the Sata? And am I correct in assuming that the mSata pcie port will operate at Sata III speeds given an mSata drive that supports this output spec? And thus there is no benefit in choosing the Sata version vs the mSata? I would like to keep my 1TB HDD and install a 256gb mSata EVO drive to run the OS and main programs on, but will elect to replace the 2.5 HDD instead and get the Sata version of the EVO drive if the mSata pcie port will not equal the performance of the 2.5 Sata port. Thanks!

Answer:does my Lenovo y510p supports Samsung 850 msata ssd

I don't think that one will work in the y510p's M.2 slot. I found this image which shows the size difference.http://imgur.com/tYBSjUMAs far as I know, what would be compatible with that slot is an M.2 2242 SSD.Like these ones:https://www.amazon.com/ADATA-Ultrabook-Compatible-Excellent-ASP600NS34-128GM-C/dp/B012ASBZEO/ref=sr_...Orhttps://www.amazon.com/Transcend-256GB-MTS400-Solid-TS256GMTS400/dp/B00KLTPUG4/ref=pd_sim_147_34?_en...I'm also not entirely sure if the y510p can boot from the m.2 slot without some kind of special software/tinkering.In the course of reserching to solve my own y510p issues I've read quite a bit about the y510p, I do recall the recommendation someone got on a different gaming performance focused message board was that the best performance would be achieved by mounting an SSD(non-specific about type) into a 2.5" adapter caddy(or using an SSD in the 2.5" format) and using it in place of the original HD. (They also suggested using the original HD as a second drive in an ultrabay caddy, which might be an option if you aren't also using the ultrabay for a second videocard for SLI)I've read mixed results when attempting to use Windows 10 with the y510p, ranging from almost no issues(using Win8.1 drivers) to completely non-functional; Win10 isn't officially supported by Lenovo on the y510p. However Windows 8.1 seems to be quite stable on the system in my experience, and I think it would be suitable for most needs.

Greetings, I just have a quick question, does the Lenovo X250 or will the X260 be compatible with both an SSD and an MSATA storage option? I plan to buy the X260 sometime in late March, but my biggest concern is swapping out the included 500 GB hard drive, or at least supplementing it with an MSATA 500 GB drive. I am worried about how I am going to get windows 10 on the drive, given that by swaping the main drive I will get rid of the OS. So my plan is to find a way to move the O.S. from the main drive to an MSATA. However, if there is a way for me to simply install a new SSD (500GB) and replace the included 500GB 7200 RPM drive, then I would just rather do that. Not having the CD or CD key seems to make re-installing the OS rather difficult though. Any help would be appreciated, Thanks!

Hello, I have the Lenovo Y570 with the 64 GB SSD version. As most of you know the SSD is connected via a Mini PCI-e slot. Due to the limited size of the SSD, I would like to replace it with a bigger one (about 256 GB), which should also be connected via the Mini PCI-e port. I was thinking about the Crucial m4 mSATA 256 GB. I contacted the official Crucial support and I was told that this SSD and the Y570 are not fully compatible. So I searched through the internet and it seems like Lenovo has some kind of whitelist which restricts the mSATA port to only a few SSDs. (e.g. the Intel series 310 with 80 GB seems to be working fine.) So I wondered if anyone can tell me, if there is a such whitelist and what mSATA SSDs are compatible with the Lenovo Y570? If this question is allowed: If there's such a list, is there a way to surpass it, for example with a new BIOS or a modified BIOS? (As far as I have heard SSD connected via a normal SATA controller are not restricted, but I don't want to replace the HDD or the optical drive with a 2,5'' SSD when there's a Mini PCI-e port available.)

Answer:Lenovo y570 - Compatible mSATA SSDs?

Hello ka17, I have Y560p and my laptop has two expanding slots. One is mini PCIe slot and the other is mSATA slot. As you can see in the link below you cannot install mSATA SSDs in mini PCIe slot, only in mSATA slot. That is why Crucial support couldn't give you the green light to install their m4 SSD. It is possible that your BIOS is not going to recognize that drive. Maybe there are some drives that are supported for Y570, but personally I don't think that they are bigger then 80GB, I read somewhere that this is an electrical issue, but it's only what I read online, not the exact statement! http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/IdeaPad-Y-and-U-series-Laptops/Installing-mSATA-SSD-In-Y560p/ta-p/418343 Hope this helps a little. Cheers

I know this is a redundant topic, but i looked through numerous threads, and I cannot find any substantial aid for newbies like me.  I bought a 64 gb mSATA III SSD, physically attached it into my laptop, and saw that the disk is available on Device Manager. Now my trouble is getting the mSSD to work as a cache--I tried setting the boot priority to the mSSD over the HDD, but nothing happened. Also downloaded VeloSSD trial, but the mSSD is not even available as an option to accelerate, and even if it was there, I do not think it would work, as the mSSD is not even being used as a cache on the laptop anyways. Do I need to wipe my HDD of all data? What will happen to the D: partition that contains the drivers? so lost @,@

Answer:Lenovo Y580 installing mSATA SSD MICRO

THIS IS ONLY APPLICABLE IF YOU ARE CONFIGURING YOUR SETUP SSD AS A CACHE.The msata SSD used is MyDigitalSSD 64GB 50mm Bullet Proof mSATA SSD - MDMS-5064.I have read a number of threads in the net regarding about installation of the msata SSD into their Lenovo Y580. Intel Rapid Storage Tech (IRST) isn't working and it is not applicable to Y580 because the "Accelerate" feature is missing. Here are the steps below:- backup all your files and make a bootable disc just incase it will fail.- Install the msata into the slot. You can access it at the back of your notebook by opening the 2-hole cover at the back.- set the bios into AHCI and not to compatible.- Boot into windows.- download the software "VeloSSD" trial version 2.0.0.7 from softpedia and do not update to 2.0.1.1 or latest version. Note that the velossd 2.0.0.7 works well with my system. However the latest version will prompt me with error. I already asked the support for this software due to the problem I am experiencing.- run and configure the software, yet the limitation of the software is upto 32GB only. However, when you buy it for $9.99 you can set a larger cache size.- DONE -Now with my current setup of Y580, I can boot windows 7 within 35secs based from EE boot optimizer.

The Subject sort of explains itself, however I will add some more infromation for convenience sake: Generally speaking I think of myself as fairly knowlageble about computers and their hardware. When it comes to laptops however I'm not so knowlagable, thus I would like to get a professional oppinion on the subject of SSD for laptops. So I'm thinking of getting a Crucial m500 SSD (I'm so happy with my older m4 that I have full confidence in it's stability and speed) with 240GB of storage space, it comes in both mSATA and in the regular 2.5" x 7mm format. Thus I ask wheter or not to choose 2.5" or mSATA for my Thinkpad s230u Twist. It already has a 500Gb  Hitachi harddrive provided originaly by Lenovo, thus if I choose the mSATA I would be able to have a total of 740Gb of fast and reliable storage. What are your oppinions on such an installation? should I just go for mSATA or choose the regular 2.5" format? Rainmaker91 P.S: I should probably just inform that Lenovos solutions is not an option due to it's extreme price and the drives beeing outdated. Also I don't need the Lenovo warranty and support due to the "Warranty" provided by law in my country.

Answer:mSATA or 2.5" SSD for Lenovo Thinkpad s230u Twist?

Hello,

I personally would go with the mSATA SSD.  Although it might be a little slower in synthetic benchmarks because it uses less flash RAM chips?using many of those in parallel is what gives SSDs their high read and write rates?in real world usage it will be faster than any conventional rotating media disk drive.

You can then use the 500GB Hitachi HDD for data storage, less-frequently-used programs, backups and so forth.  When you are ready, you can replace that with a conventional 2.5" (but 7mm high) SSD and use the S230u as solely solid-state ultrabook.  Of course, you could then get an external 2.5" USB 3.0 hard disk drive enclosure and continue to use the Hitachi disk drive for backups.
