New Lenovo x230 Pointer & Keyboard Issues

Question: New Lenovo x230 Pointer & Keyboard Issues

I just received a new compay issues computer: x230 running Windows Pro 64 bit, Office 2010 and an SSD. Unfortunately, out of the box the pointing devices, either the ultranav or an external mouse and keyboard (MSFT Sculpt), suffer from auto clicking and inability to input text...the text writes over itself...cursor moves forward and then backspaces on itself. The external keyboard worked fine when tested on other notebooks at home. I did unistall the MSFt keyboard SW on the x230 to see if that made a difference. Nope. My IT team remotely updated all drivers, etc. So, everthing system-wise is up to date. They seemed to have fixed it for about an hour, then it went back to this behavior, including opening multiple instances of applications on its own. The PC is unusable. Thoughts? Halfcalf18

Preferred Solution: New Lenovo x230 Pointer & Keyboard Issues

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: New Lenovo x230 Pointer & Keyboard Issues

The touchpad is defective. If you have an external mouse, try to disable it (either in BIOS or OS) while you get a replacement.

I spent over an hour on the phone with Lenovo tech support last week to try to solve this issue and it is not solved. The guy had never heard of it and kept researching how to fix it.  I personally  have this feeling that it's a very very simple issue but I can't figure out how to correct it.  I've changed mouse/pointer settings and it still isn't working.  I love my new laptop in every other way but i'm getting so frustrated with it I'm ready to send it back because of the problem with the mouse/pointer.  So if anyone could help me I'd appreciate it greatly. I will be typing and out of nowhere the cursor will move to wherever the mouse is...or it will highlight everything I just typed and delete it.  I've had to type much slower and keep moving the mouse but when i'm working on my projects and typing away and highlighting/editing, I get into the work and it's a pain in the rear when the cursor suddenly moves a paragraph up and I am still typing away and sometimes don't realize it until i've typed another two sentences.  Hence the typing slower. Today it deleted discussion posts I had typed up for my online classes before I had hit submit. Causing me to waste another 30 minutes trying to retype what I'd already done.  I was ready to throw this laptop in the garbage. I decided to not do that and post in this forum in the hopes that someone will be able to help me. Thank you,Komal

I have owned my ThinkPad X230 for roughly 4 months now. About 3 weeks into using it, the "u" key cover on the keyboard fell off. When I called customer support they told me the key was not covered by the warranty. So I have been working with the key taped over top of the pad. Then two days ago the "g" key cover fell off. I refuse to work on a computer with two taped keys and since calling customer service is no help, I need some advice. Is there an address where I can send a letter to the complaint department? Anyone with ideas please let me know.

Answer:X230 Keyboard Issues

That is really ridiculous!  My sympathies. Sometimes the less u say the better. Callback support.  Don't mention your previous calls. Tell them that the "U" key doesn't work when you press it.  Don't say anything else.  They will in all likelihood send you a new keyboard overnight.  Piece of cake to replace the keyboard.. Let us know how you made out.

Lenovo G-50 with Windows 10. The pointer stopped working suddenly. I tried to manage a solution with the keyboard. Probably I did something wrong because now the keyboard doesn't work either. The only keys still working are Ctrl+Alt+Delete, just for restarting the laptop. Could anyone help me? I don't understand very well the computer language, so please, give an easy to understand help. Many thanks.

Hi all,Apologies if I've missed this elsewhere - new to the forums so still learning to navigate. As background, machine type listed below:X230 Laptop (ThinkPad) - Machine Type 2325, Model BA6As I see it I'm having two separate issues here but they may well be linked: Recent Windows 10 updates are making the taskbar fully ineffective - I note this is fairly common and have tried the powershell route to check updates to no avail; curious to know what the advice here generally is, if X230 is no good with Windows 10 or is there something specific I should be doing to rectify this. This weekend, my laptop has developed a habit whereby the sound and video playback stops working suddenly. On boot-up it's fine but after a while, I can't listen to music or watch videos at all. Bit alarmed about this but suspect it may be linked to the thunderstorm on Thursday (based in London...), given I woke up to realise the powerboard on my TV had also gone. My laptop is within warranty so hopefully if it's hardware related, I would hope this is covered - in truth, I was reassured about the Lenovo warranty but have never had cause to use it at home or work over the last 6 years of using Lenovos.Any help or guidance would be massively appreciated!Kind regards,Bal

Hi. I've got an x230 with Windows 10 installed(Build 10240) and have bought a bluetooth bdc (FRU 60Y3305) and installed it into the laptop. Device manager is unable to see the bluetooth chip before or after I've instlled any of the drivers. I have tried a number of different driver packages. Some have come back with windws saying that "Broadcom Bluetooth Software doesn't work on this version of windows" and one that a number of people seem to have got working said that it couldn't detect any Broadcom Bluetooth hardware. I have a feeling that this isnt going to work  but some people on the internet seem to have got it to work!? Has andybody got any info on this? Thanks

Hi,I have a Lenovo X230, S/N ********, type 2325 , now with 2 years and less than 2 months (with 4 year warranty extension). From new I bought this computer with two batteries, and from day one of the batteries was loose (I never complained because I was making my master degree and then one year erasmus). And the paint on my computer is peeling of, as you can see in photos. From day one this computer is used on a sleeve, and taken with care.My old T410s is like new and never was threated like this one.I called IBM Portugal for assistance (due to a screen problem) and to see this issues. The answer was "yes you have a defect on the paint and in the battery (1mm shorter on the sides!), but we can't do nothing, since we only repair hardware, you must open a claim case with lenovo.Guess what? The email for Portugal doesn't work, the phones provided are for IBM and I can't find a way to claim...I guess this isn't a way to threat someone who pays 1200eur for a laptop. If some mod can open opening a case I would thank.

I bought X230 about 3 weeks ago, and got a very bothersome problem with the track pointer. Mouse pointer isn't moved sometimes. I found that this problem happened when I try to use it after the screen saver ends. The pointer is moved again if I make the laptop hibernate mode and wake it up. I guess there is some problem on UltraNav driver that it cannot recognize the event from the screen saver to the normal mode. Test this issue by entering the screen saver mode, and wake the laptop again and again. So, you can find that point stuck problem ocassionally. I hope this problem is fixed soon...

Answer:X230 very bothersome track pointer problem

Hi there morethanair:

I have a X230 here and I've noticed a slight delay to the track pad response time (ranging roughly 5 seconds) the track pointer on the other hand, seems to work fine right from waking after sleep mode.

What driver version of the UltraNav do you have? The driver version I have is 16.1.1.0 which is the latest version.  If you need to update that driver you can run TVT System update or download the single driver here: Synaptics UltraNav driver for Windows 7 If your driver is current, that delay seems to be a normal

Guys I'm having this issue with my touchpad, when I slide towards a button on the screen and lift my finger up to hit the click button, in most of the cases I mis-click because it seems the pointer jumps away when I lift my finger. This is very irritating. This was default with clean install Windows 7. So I installed the drivers i.e. UltraNav, but that made things worse! Now it seems like the resolution has dropped and the mouse cursor is twitchy. I played with the UltraNav settings, made things a bit better, but yet still worse than the default configuration I had with Windows 7. Oh yeah, the jumpiness of the cursor remained after lifting finger from touchpad. So I removed those drivers again... What to do now? Seems like a software issue, but that jumping drives me nuts.......

Answer:X230: Pointer jumps away when lifting finger from touchpad

Install the latest Synaptics drivers, set everything to default and increase touch sensitivity a bit. That'll make it much better until Lenovo gets their act together. The latest Synaptics drivers were just released.

Hello, I have been having a couple of issues for some time now, but lately they are starting to annoy me. When I play some games my CPU overheats very easily. Playing Rust or Crea is almost near impossible, because the laptop just overheats and my fps drops from 60 to 10 and even lower. I can not play most of my games anymore without undervolting the processor with ThrottleStop. I undervolt the processor to ~0.79, which is an offset of -45.9. When it is undervolted most of the problems go away, however I want to know why is my processor not able to handle these games? I have a i7-4720HQ, which for some reason is limited to 2.6 GHz. And also Nvidia 960m. My friend has the same processor but his laptop is a Asus and his is limited to 3.6 GHz, without overheating. If I make mine to 3.6GHz I cana use my laptop for about 10 minutes, if playing games. I also gave the laptop for the thermal paste to be changed but that didn't help at all. I cleaned the fans but that also didn't help. I have an external fan, which is always on as well. Any ideas what to do? The keyboard issue is pretty simple. When I restart the laptop everthing works fine. Hibernating the laptop makes the backspace go 1 by 1 letter and not the usual fast deleting. To fix this I have to go to keyboard settings and change the keyboard repeat rate, which fixes the problem until the next Hibernation or Sleep. I mostly ignore this and it sometimes fixes by itself, after waking it up, but very rar... Read more

Hi, I inadvertently pressed something on my ThinkPad keyboard and it's now not typing what I expect to see. The language is set in the control panel to English UK and this hasn't been affected. However most of the letter keys are now acting as keyboard shortcuts. In Word 2010 this is what happens: 4 = ?e = ?r = registered symbolt = trademark symboly = puts cursor to beginning of linei = opens File menuo = puts document in outline viewa = ąs = triggers split screend = enters a bookmarkf = enters a footnotel = starts a numbered listc = copyright symbolv = opens paste special dialog box I've obviously trigger some keyboard shortcut to change the settings but have no idea how. Need to reset this asap as it's my work laptop - IT team not able to help as I'm not on the company network and can't log on as my password can't be typed in accurately... Any help appreciated. Hello, I have the following issue with my Lenovo T540p. A couple of days (week maybe) ago some keys stopped responding every time, namely: Shift, T, Tab and Backspace. It happens at random, most of the time they work but occasionally they stop working and this happens more often.I've read alot of complaints about this particular issue, but no solution. Can someone confirm that replacing the keyboard actually solves this issue, or the root of the problem is somewhere deeper... motherboard, or keyboard connectior maybe?

I am having trouble with the keyboard for my Lenovo Z580. The touch pad will randomly stop working for a few seconds at a time and then the keyboard will type characters erratically or delete items without me pressing any buttons. I thought it may have to do with the touchpad sensitivity but I tried to adjust the settings on the touchpad and even uninstall the touchpad program but the keyboard is still typing ".............................." or deleting everything without me intending to do so. If I press "Num Lock" it will stop for a few seconds and then start again. I sent it in to the warranty company I got through Staples (where the computer was bought) and they said they replaced the AC adapter but I am still having the same problems. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you!

In the midle of this game, I must of somehow pressed a number of these combinations, all of the sudden I could not use the keys;'T', 'Y', 'Caps Lock', 'Left Shift', 'Backspace', 'Tab' and 'Numb Lock'. The only thing I could think of is that I could have is that somehow I must of pressed the Fn key by mistake, and either the F1- F12 or the numbers 1-0. Luckily, I had a backup the night before, but to no avail, it did nothing. I did not download anything during this game, or prior to playing this game.  Thanks for the help in advance. Specs; Intel Pentium CPU B950 @ 2.10GHz, 2.10GhzInstalled Memory 4.00 GBSystem type Windows 7 Ultimate, 64-bit Operating System

The laptop i tried wasn't a gaming laptop. Is there a fix for that?or is it the way it is supposed to be?Thanks !

Answer:Lenovo Z570 Keyboard issues

Hi,

Try the following steps to identify and resolve the issue.

1. Power off the laptop2. Press all the keys one by one3. Power on the laptop and keep tapping F2 to enter BIOS4. In BIOS, press F9 to load defaults5. Save the settings and exit6. Let it boot to Windows7. Open the device manager and uninstall keyboard drivers8. System will restart9. Observe the system

Also check if an external keyboard or Onscreen keyboard works fine. That will help to identify the cause. Please let me know how it worked out.

A few days ago, I bought a refurbished Lenovo z510 ideapad and the keyboard and mouse are malfunctioning wildly. When I am trying to type anything, after a varying amount of words the cursor will either highlight/backspace/move/overwrite, which leads to me deleting sentences and paragraphs or makes me take far too much time to type simple messages/papers (such as this message). I understand this is a risk I took with purchasing a refurbished laptop, but it's aggravating that I can't get any work done and none of my troubleshooting techniques are working. I would appreciate any help!

I have a Lenovo ThinkPad T440. I have replaced the trackpad with an older style trackpad, after putting everything back together it seemed as if everything was fine, but then I noticed that the delete key, PgUp, PgDn and PrtSc were not working. Note, the delete key does not respond even when I'm in the BIOS. I find it very hard to believe that I've damaged the keyboard and thus the functionality of some keys has been lost, I have examined the connecting ribbon cable and connection socket carefully, they are undamaged and free of debree. Can anyone give me any other suggestions? An external USB keyboard works fine.Delete Key doesn't work in BIOS.

Hi all I recently purchased the aforementioned Lenovo model 2 and a half months ago (around May 5). While I love the tablet, I am currently experiencing keyboard issues. When I pressY key or the number 6 I get the number y and 6 (y6)T key or the number 5 I get the number t and 5 (t5)Hyphen '-' key or the left square bracket '[' I get left square bracket and hyphen ( [- )Equals '=' key or the right square bracket ']' I get right square bracket and equals ( ]= ) Output in parenthesis   The caps lock button works, but it also mutes the sound on the device. The mute key works, but also puts the keyboard in caps lock. The backspace button does not delete any previous text - it takes me to the Windows Lock Screen. Ironically, when typing my password at this screen the backspace key works (go fig). When pressing the volume up key, the sound goes down.  When I press any of these keys [-]= alongside shift in an attempt to produce the alternative key output (e.g. capitalizing the key or alternative symbols) the key is unresponsive. Such as the case of t and y - there's no capitalization when holding shift or caps lock. Keys are not responsive when holding shift. This is prevalent when holding keys and the described earlier in the post. I followed the suggestions listed at the following URLhttps://support.lenovo.com/us/en/solutions/ht103985 And the solutions did not work. The on screen Windows 10 keyboard does work.&nb... Read more

Aside from the BSOD and random graphics driver crashes, I've run into a problem that I've never seen or heard of before. My keyboard types numbers. It's not numlock, and it's not the keys with the numlock fn either. The entire keyboard. This will happen randomly and result in all inputs on the keyboard resulting in sequential numbers. For example, typing "my laptop is disappointing me" will result in 12 345678 90 1234567890123 45. This has happened in browser repeatedly. Refreshing or reopening the browser usually resolved the issue. However, the problem has gotten worse recently. When playing games, keystrokes without fail register as numbers. This means that instead of moving around, the character will stand and switch weapons/ do whatever the number keys are bonded to. I've tested this with different programs and have had the same issues. Reopening the program and rebooting have failed. I have done a system restore that resolved the problem for a short while, but the issue returned after a reboot. I don't really want to have to return this or reformat it and am looking for any possible solutions.

Hi, I am having a problem with my keyboard during online games.  Example: In a game, to check inventory you press "i". When I press "i", it gives me a completely different function. I have checked all the settings within the game, and the buttons are assigned to all default functions.  The keyboard is fine, but it is just during games that pressing "hotkeys" that they do not pull up the designated action in the game. This has happened in all my games not just one.  I don't know where to post this and ask for help, but if someone could help me with this problem, it would be greatly appreciated!

Answer:Lenovo Ideapad Y500 Keyboard issues

So guys, noone of you tried to reply to me so i tried to solve my problem by my own. Pluging off touchpad from motherboard seems working for the keyboard issues, and im fine with that for now. Unfortunately coudnl't find solution for my problem with fn key, and i found a new problem that im trying to solve. Im using 2 monitor, one the main from laptop and the second one free standing from computer. The laptop monitor has 1920x1080 resolution, but the second one got 1440x900 resolution. At windows 8 didn't have any problems with the graphic, but at 8.1 as you can see at image there is a little blur at the ts3, and at the skype icon at the right down corner of the 1st monitor. Have no idea how to fix that blur, was trying to reinstal graph settings and some similliar stuff. Just the screen doesnt look sharp as it was earlier.Another thing is that i can't find the Intel(R) HM76 Express - 1E59 driver. I did the chipset driver install from lenovo support site but i didnt change anything. Cmon guys, pls help. http://postimg.org/image/ae6rhst05/full/

I've spent the better part of 2 days trying to figure this out for my boss, she's mucked up her PC and I'm drawing blanks. She reported to me that her keyboard stopped working, and external keyboards "would not sync" either.  She works remotely, so I had her send me the PC.  Upon receiving, I was able to get USB keyboards to work, where she'd tried 3 (one brand new) and failed.   However - I still can't solve the laptop's internal keyboard.  It appears to be entirely unresponsive, but the FN light does work, so it's getting power.  When opening the on-screen keyboard, I see that: CNTRL and ALT are being recognized.  Escape is acting as the function lock/unlock.  B, S and K keys are also being recognized, but as other characters, like Scroll lock and ALT+Scroll lock.  No other keys are recognized. I've checked languages, deleted and reinstalled drivers, system restored to an older point where the keyboard did work, and a few other things I've read suggestions on, to no avail.  I'd say by now I've been through 15 different posts from Windows, Lenovo, other support sites, and have had no luck with any suggested remedy.  Anyone have any better/other ideas?  We're now out of the T450S, only have T440S in stock, and considering the improved touchpad of the T450, and her expanded memory, I don't want to downgrade unless absolutely necessary.  I'd like to fix the 450. Thanks

Hello! So I've gotten an issue that occoured today, which have made my laptop more or less useless. So yesterday during school it worked wonders, and today when I got to school and booted the laptop on. The Touchpad WOULD not work. It would not move out of the spot, but the keyboard have also just done the same. When I try and press a button on the keyboard nothing happens. I currently only have 4 buttons that work on it. Which are F9(Turn display on/off) F11/F12(display light up and down) and Fn key. This effectively means I am locked out of my laptop without having a mouse and a  keyboard with me. Which I simply cant have to school. I've tried googling around, but no one seemed to have this issue!

Purchased lenovo 900 series notebook four months back and it was normal untill three weeks when a new update for windows 10 came in. After the new update, whenever I pressed any function key(pressing fn key and button f9) for say send receive emails in outlook or even function f5 for refresh in chrome, entire keyboard stops working. I have to restart the laptop everytime this happens. Then the keyboard works until I press any function combo keys.  I resinatlled the keyboard drivers and updated it. Still it is not working. Then I installed the lenovo vantage app, tried changing hot keys to straight function keys, even then the keuboard stops working and I had to do the reboot stuff. Is there a solution to this problem? what is the issue? as it happened from windows update, am doubting whether this is the update issue or is it the keys are making the entire keyboard locking.... seriously am not able to comprehend the root cause. My keys were beginning to stop working one by one, (number keys, spacebar, and overall sections of the keyboard). It turned out the ribbon, main connection, was just getting loose. The "latch" that holds this ribbon in place is not very secure. You may want to try getting access to the keyboard to check the connections.

Hello I brought my G580 on boxing day 2012, and in October the warranty ran out, since then I have been having problems with the keyboard. Most of the buttons do other things like they are now hotkeys and opening up programs and sub menus, the space bar doesn't work, to get it to work again I have to restart. I have tried to reinstall windows 8 through a back up, but nothing happens, I have tried to refresh, but it fails, Now it won't even allow me to go to the store and update windows 8 to 8.1. I haven't even had it for a year yet and the warranty has expired, so any help would be great thanks. deadmic

I?m sorry to hear that the Keyboard is not working as expected in your G580 Laptop and the warranty is expired. I suggest you check using any other External Keyboard if you have by un-installing the Keyboard driver in the ?Device Manager?, If the issue persists even after re-installing the Keyboard driver using external Keyboard. So after over a year and a half of attempting to get Lenovo to replace my Thinkpad Edge 14 I finally decided enough was enough, and was able to get myself an Ideapad again. I had the Y510 two-three years back, and it was / still is a fantastic device! However, the specifications are old, and any upgradeable hardware is bottlenecked by an old integrated card. Anyways, I now am the owner of a V470, and it's a very very sleek looking device, the speakers are alright (they certainly can't compare to my Y510 Dolby with Sub), but the most desirable feature is the 1GB nVidea 525M discrete graphics. So I fire it up, load something simple: Minecraft. .Then it happened. Do my hands deceive me? How can it be that the Keyboard CANNOT operate at the same time as the Trackpad? I press and hold W to go forward, attempt to turn: I get nothing. I stop holding down W, Trackpad use resumes as normal. Im moving the cursor around to ensure fluid directional movement, everything works here...then I press W to start moving, while still moving the cursor: I get nothing. I want to know if this is 1 of 3 things. 1. A driver issue. The easiest fix, of course, but it doesn't stop the issue from being any less annoying up until that point. (Although all my Windows updates are good...so I'm fearing the solution will not be so easy.) 2. A hardware issue. Somehow, perhaps in the assembly of this unit, something isn't connected right or something wasn't soldered during the ... Read more

Recently my Z580 has been typing characters (specifiaclly a period) repeatedly, without me having pressed any key, whenever I open any applicaiton or software (such as notepad or the internet). Also whenever I press the b or n key it begins doing the same thing and types periods without stopping. I've tried cleaning the keayboard, but that didn't work. I have also tried booting in safe mode to see if the problem persisted and it did. I've scanned my computer for viruses as well but found nothing. So I'm out of ideas as to what to do. So I should preface this by saying that I managed to fix the issue, however I thought it would be useful if this was posted so others with the same problem can potentially fix their computer. So earlier today I updated my computer to the most recent windows 10 release (version 1703). Upon updating I noticed that my keyboard seemed to be having issues. It wasn't completely non-functioning, however it seemed to be having trouble picking up some keystrokes. As far as I could tell these seemed to be random and randomly timed (roughly every 3-4th keystroke was being missed). Updating drivers and using the standard windows troubleshooter picked up nothing. However other forums noted that it could be the BIOS not being completely up to date. I tried this and it worked! This is the link I used: http://pcsupport.lenovo.com/us/en/products/tablets/yoga-series/yoga-book/downloads It should detect the model of laptop you use - just click on "Scan Update" and it will pick up whether you need a BIOS update - just follow the instructions from there. It is crucial though that the correct BIOS for your model is used however. Hope this helps someone!

Hello, My parents have owned a Lenovo laptop for a couple of years now. However, recently this issue showed up and I wondered whether there is a chance there is a solution to this problem which I could try myself, since the laptop its warranty already expired. If I recall correctly, the model of the laptop is the Lenovo IdeaPad Flex 2, running Windows 10. So here is the issue; the laptop has issues turning on. Oddly enough, it is not a very consistent issue. Eventually, the laptop does turn on. The problem is that this sometimes takes hours, other times the laptop appears to be able to boot instantly as it normally would. I have no idea what affects this. When pressing the power button, the keyboard backlight starts flashing. It does this until the laptop completely boots, and as I said, the amount of time this takes varies. I already tried looking for solutions on different forums, but they usually concern the issue where the keyboard backlight flashed and the laptop simply will not boot at all, which is not the case here, as it eventually does but often it takes a while.Other solutions suggested a certain amount of flashes meant a certain issue or failure. Problem here is that the amount of flashes seem to be random, so it is not as if it just keeps looping a certain amount of flashes as it varies. This leaves me puzzled as to what could be the culprit. I am not sure what to do, especially since I have not owned a Windows-based machine in a whi... Read more

Hi itsasin,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

Would you have the machine number or MTM to verify the model (you can also get from here)?

Isolating the point of failure may be necessary to determine if the delay on start up is a power issue or a boot problem.
Try removing the harddrive so we can test if the machine can power faster.
You can download the hardware manual from the support website for removal guide.

Hi All, Your urgent attention to this issue is highly appreciated. I had purchased Lenovo Z580 laptop (QB05312638) on 25/08/2012. On the date of my purchase there was an advertisement from Lenovo stating " 3 years Warranty" ( 1 year accidental damage + Onsite warranty & 2 years Carriage Warranty). However my laptop was down and required to be serviced within a year due to keyboard case problem. This was serviced at that time and now I am facing same issue of keyboard case problem which led to my display flickering issue as advised by Lenovo authorized service centre. Though my Laptop is still under 3 year warranty, the service centre states that I have only " 1 year of Warranty " as per the records and charges me INR 16,000.00 to service the display issue. Also the service centre states if my record shows this as " 3 year period of Warranty " they would do the needful. Out of my interest I had spent the amount from my pocket for the keyboard case of INR 7000.00. Please advise if the warranty period could be changed to 3 years so that the display could be changed. I am also trying to get in touch with the service team ( [email protected]ovo.com & [email protected] ), however there is no response inspite of multiple chasers. NOTE : My Lenovo laptop (Z580) is still with the Lenovo service centre for more than 45 days, awaiting an update from lenovo. My 3 year warrant expires on 25/08/2015. Thanks & Warm Regards... Read more

Your best option is to call Lenovo and try to talk to their Manager.

I received my X230 on 15/11/12, and only one month later my 'g' key fell off.But when we called support here in Israel , i couldn't believe in what i heard. "Keyboard keys are not under warranty".Before this case I had a very good opinion about Lenovo but not more.In support center prefer to blame me than to admit that there is a problem in the laptop. An hour ago, I was on the phone with one of the managers in Lenovo israel. He swore to me that this is the first time he hear about key fell problem in lenovo x230, and of couse it's because of me.Immediately after our conversation i searched about this in the google and discovered that I am not alone.I did not expect this from Lenovo, not for this i paid 1.5K.I paid for goodwill, as i understand now I was wrong.

Hi, avnilm

A key falling off of the keyboard should be covered under warranty, so you are correct in that thinking. Can you send me a private message with your serial number, machine type model, name, and contact information? I'd like to do some research on this problem and see what can be done.

Thanks in advance,
Adam

I don't want to turn this into a discussion about the new keyboards vs the old keyboards, but I wanted to post this so that others are aware of this situation. I received my X230 on 12/27, and on the 28th, my b key fell off.  The current model I have installed is 04X1353, which is backlit, and made by SRX (for those of you who don't know, Lenovo sources their keyboards from different suppliers).  After calling support immediately (and waiting for a long time - another day, another post), they decided to ship a replacement keyboard to me, this time a 04Y0639.  What is the difference between 04X1353 and 04Y0639? Both are B/L USE SRX, except in the FRU lists, one is primary whereas the other one is secondary.  What does that mean? Any consensus as to which keyboards are better?

Hello, I just received my new X230 last week and I noticed my up and down arrow keys are not sitting flat. The down-arrow key is dipping down on the top right corner and the up-arrow key is slanting up on the top right corner. I tried calling support and they say they have to send me a box and ship it in which will take a while. I really can't be without my laptop. Does anyone have any ideas of why it's like this and how I can maybe make the key sit flat myself? It's really bugging me. I've never had a keyboard with keys that slant. Here are some pictures:http://i.imgur.com/sh065.jpghttp://i.imgur.com/gFuyu.jpghttp://i.imgur.com/Zmvk7.jpg Thanks,Ryan

Answer:X230 Keyboard key slanted

Hello,

From looking at the photographs, it looks like the problem is with the actual individual keycap and not with the keyboard as a whole.  Since your X230 is brand new, perhaps it can be repaired under warranty locally?  You might want to contact support again and see if there are any authorized repair facilities nearby.  Otherwise, shipping it in would be the best thing to do.

never try to remove the keyboard with power on, this could cause damage to your motherboard. I have swapped my X230 between backlit and non-backlit keyboard many times, It could be that the backlit keyboard that the ebay sold you was DOA or faulty at the start. So try to return the keyboard and get another one.

Hi to all...I've lenovo g560 laptop whose keyboard is not working properly. Now, a replacement laptop keyboard for lenovo g570 is available at local market. So, will it be compatible with my lenovo g560..Thanks in advance

Answer:Is lenovo g570 laptop keyboard compatible with lenovo g560's keyboard

hi hamzaali52,

Welcome to the Forums.

Looking at the keyboard part numbers for the G560 (see page 79-80 of the HMM) and the G570 (see page 79-83 of the HMM), there are no matching part numbers between the two models, thus, the keyboard may fit but it may not work due to a whitelist of compatible parts or due to a different keyboard ribbon/cable layout.

I recommend you stick to the part numbers listed on the HMM (Hardware Maintenance Manual) for best compatibility.

Hi everybody! I live in Sweden and plan to buy a X230 as cheap as possible, which means a refurb unit from ebay.com, from either UK or USA. If you have any comments about importing a unit from another country please tell me so. Good or bad. More specificly, I wonder if I can put a SWE backlit keyboard in a X230 that shiped with a UK non-backlit keyboard? Also, does the warranty follow the unit to the new country? Can I be sure that lenovo will help me if my USA unit fails? If I find an IPS screen, can I put it in a X230 shiped with a TN panel? (technicaly, lets pretend I know how) Thanks!

Answer:Replacing the keyboard on a X230 - Exceptions?

you can change between the backlit and non backlit version of the precision keyboard on the X230. As long as your unit has International Warranty coverage in Sweden (and it has valid warranty), then you can get warranty support in sweden. IPS and TN swap is not covered by warranty, if you damage anything, Lenovo may not provide you with support and may void warranty on the rest of the system.

Hi EveryoneI have a new x230.  Overall I am very happy with the machine.  However one thing I noticed is that the complete row of keys that contain the function keys are slighlty tilted; a little higher on the left and lower on the right.  Every key on the row is tilted in that fashion except for the first key (esc) and last key (delete).  They all seem functional and are not loose in any way.  Anyone else experience this with their keyboard?  Should i be concerned?

Answer:x230 keyboard...function keys

I don't have problems with the Function keys but I do with the Delete key.  <rant follows> I just took delivery of two ThinkPad X230's.  I had also bought two before in August, one of which I just finally gave to a user today.  I'm getting quite annoyed at the assembly quality of ThinkPad's these days.  It's taking up too much of my time to call IBM and open cases, although they are usually quite willing to do what I ask. 1st X230 (August) - Just fine.  Deployed to a user in August.2nd X230 (August) - Trackpad made strange noises compared to the other one and had a lot more flex than the other one.  I went away on a business trip for almost a month and when I got back Lenovo (service contract is with IBM for Canada), nobody had ever come to fix it.  The case had been noted as fixed and closed.  So I get that re-opened but then the trackpad-wristrest piece that is sent as my replacement has a fingerprint reader which is not in my spec.  So I take that but request that the proper one be ordered.  IBM tech is great and orderes every available trackpad-wristrest since he can't discrern from the Lenovo system which doesn't have a fingerprint reader (and there is no FRU# on the old one).3rd X230 (October) - Just fine, however, I needed to deploy #2 after it sitting around for so long chewing away warranty, so I had IBM take the good trackpad off this unit and put it onto #2.  So now this unit awaits the trackpad... Answer:x230 keyboard part number

Hey there Marccollin,

To make sure I give you the right keyboard, can you provide me with some details of your current keyboard? Backlight, etc.? As there are many options in the parts list. Alternatively, if you take a look at the Parts list for the x230, 2306 Model there is a long keyboard list towards the end of the document.

All else fails, you can contact support, 0810-631-213, and ask for the FRU part number of a French Canadian keyboard for the X230.

Hello, I started a new post because this is a different Error. After I updated my x230t using the recommeneded updates from the website, my keyboard suddenly stopped working. I tried re-installing windows but the error remained. I eventually found the issue being that when I start up the PC, the Fn key is stuck as if its still pressed, even when its not (the key itself isnt stuck). To solve this, I went into Bios and swapped the Fn key with left Ctrl, and now whenever I boot up the PC I plug in an external keyboard and press left Ctrl, this "unsticks" the left Ctrl key (which is physically the Fn key after I swapped them)  and lets me use the computer normally. What could have caused it? is it unrelated to windows seeing as it happened after I clean installed? how do I go about fixing it? and can I contact an offical Lenovo support somewhere online?

Answer:x230 Tablet keyboard issue

I would just replace the keyboard.  This sort of problem is almost always a short in the keyboard.  Used ones are commonly available.  The T430, X230, T530, W530 all use the same keyboard

On May 19, 2015 an automated update was installed for my ELAN smartpad. That update bricked my keyboard and the smartpad. I was lazy, so I attached an external mouse and used the onscreen keyboard for a week, but today I poked around and figured out the fix.

First, I used the Troubleshooting tool and that told me the problem was an error code 19, which told me that the problem was in the registry. You will need to edit the registry to fix the problem, so if you are completely unfamiliar with how to do that, phone a friend who knows. To find the keyboard entry in regedit, open HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SYSTEM/CurrentControlSet/Control/Class. Click on the files under the Class folder until you find the one that says "keyboard" in the Data column.

Next, check your UpperFilters value. The ELAN Tech update hosed that value. If your UpperFilters value says something like "ETD CeKbFilter ikbevent r KbFilter", there's your problem. Edit the value and delete the "r" and "KbFilter" (leave "ETD CeKbFilter alone) and, on a new line, enter "kbdclass". Click OK. You may get a message about requiring a new line or empty lines not permitted or something like that. Ignore it. That won't cause any problems. DO NOT RESTART THE COMPUTER YET.

Sorry for yelling. Now go to Device Manager, go to the mouse entry, go to the ELAN smartpad entry, then uninstall the driver. Once you have done that, you can restart your computer.

I really have to thank you, I have been dealing with this issue for nearly 4 days now, as even USB keyboards were not being recognized by windows. I refreshed windows, it fixed the problem, but when I updated to 8.1 the keyboard bricked again. I read a guide on Code 19 similar to your fix, but it did not include adding Kbdclass or uninstalling the ELAN driver afterwards. You have brought hours of frustration to a close, thank you so much!

Dear all, I jsut got a x240 and really liked the QuickConnect app from Lenovo, which works great for my job (I can use my Android phone as a remote presenter, keyboard, etc.). I was wondering if I can install quick connect in my x230. I know that Lenovo says it's only for the x240, but since it connects via Bluetooth, I don't see why it wouldn't work with the X230. Doe anyone have any experience with this? Thank you. R.

Hi All! I'm sorry to sound like a bit of a newb here, but i'm looking for a little bit of assistance with my x230 laptop.  I bought the laptop back in september with windows 7 professional.  A couple months later, I upgraded to windows 8 only to not really like it too much and decide for now I want to revert back to Windows 7.  Not knowing what my options were, I installed Windows 7 Ultimate back on the machine through an external cd drive, but now I'm missing about 100gb from my main drive, I ordered a 500gb 7200 rpm drive but now I only have about 350 GB available after the clean install.  I wasn't too sure how the recovery options on the x230 worked.  I see that next to my main C drive, there is another drive there located "Recovery" It has about 75% of the disk space being taken up but there is absolutely nothing within the actual drive when I actually click it.  It's probably too late, but is there any way to actually take my laptop back to the way it was when I first bought it? I only ask because it seems there's something on that recovery drive but I just can't figure out what it is.  I would appreciate any help at all, I'm sorry for sounding like such a newb with this stuff!

Answer:Lenovo x230 Recovery

Hi, Flyerfan16

If you are viewing your drives in Disk Management, how big is the Recovery partition? The partitions from Lenovo are normally between 7 GB and 10 GB when the machine ships. If the original partition is still on the drive, then you should be able to recover to the settings when the machine was first purchased.

You can attempt recovery by starting the machine as normal and then pressing Enter repeatedly to interrupt startup. A menu should then appear, with an option available to recover your system. Press the associated key for this action and then follow the prompts. If all works well, you should be able to go back to the way it was. If you choose this option, make sure to back up all files that you wish to keep that are currently on the system.

Hope it helps,
Adam

Hello,So, first of all, I'm not english, so I'm sorry for the following mistakes.Let's start.1 year ago I've bought a lenovo x230 netbook with Windows 8, intel core i7 + 8 gb ram + SSD. [still using these specs]Okay. After 1 month of usage, the display started to have some problems. From the left to right, the 3/7 part of the display is changing in all the colors while using. It depends on what color is the page opened. If it's white, this part of the display is black with some "running" white lines, if it's blue - red and so on.No problem ; acording to the warranty, the display has been changed. It was ok.Since august 2014 I didn't use the laptop again. I started using it in April 2015. In may, the display started to have that problem again, but I've read on your forum that I need to put the display on 60Hz and on High performance mode to fix it, and that's what I did. At the beggining of June, the problem was back, and it is still on 60Hz and high performance mode.3 days ago, my laptop started to make another problem ; CHARGING.It doesn't want to charge.  If I just plug in, it stays with the battery on 0%, and it doesn't open because of the missing electricity, but I've realised something. If I move the end of the charger [near the part which get into that yellow circle where the end of the charger must be, hope you understand] higher than 10-15 CMs it DOES charge. But now it doesn't charge even if I put it in the position I've said before. Solved!

Answer:Lenovo Think Pad x230 and mSATA SSD

Hi, odessit

This should be possible. There is a slot for an mSATA drive in the X230, as shown here. Also shown in that link is that an mSATA is a user-replaceable part. After purchasing your SSD, then all you will need to do is install it per the instructions here (pp. 70) Also, you will likely need to download this firmware update after installing the drive. This will allow the BIOS to recognize the SSD if you plan to use it as the C: drive of the system. The update can be found here.

Hope it helps,
Adam

Nothing I can do... PC doesn't react to anything. Was working fine before shut down. What is wrong??? What can I do? Help!

Answer:lenovo x230 - Does not boot!!!

fre_madrid,1. unplug power cable and battery, press and hold the power button during 30 sec, plug the battery and cable again, try to boot laptop.2. OR if you are familiar with disassembling of keyboard and palmrest do it, then unplug connector of small yellow battery under palmrest (near FPR) during several minuts. Assemble the laptop and try to boot. If laptop will boot go to BIOS setup, press F9 and save default settings, set and save your settings. If that actions will not resolve the issue I'm afraid you have to contact with Lenovo support.

Question: Lenovo X230 setup

Hi, everyone,A quick question. I have an x230 on the way and am looking to set up my workspace in a specific way. Here is what I want: an external monitor that will allow me to move the cursor from the laptop screen to the other monitor. So, in essence, a dual monitor set-up but with the laptop screen as one of the monitors. I would also like to be able to use a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse while in this set-up. Do I need the UltraSeries 3 dock, or something else? Thanks!Parker

Answer:Lenovo X230 setup

Hi, Parker

You should be able to accomplish this without a docking station. The X230 supports a dual independent display and has a VGA port and a Mini DisplayPort. So if you have a monitor with one of these connections and hook it up to your laptop, then it should work. You will need to make sure that you Extend the display and not Duplicate it. Duplicate will give you the same image on both screens. You can just use Win + P to set it appropriately.

As for the Bluetooth keyboard and mouse, you should have no issues here either. Provided Bluetooth is turned on in the system and you have compatible Bluetooth peripherals, it should work like a charm once they've been paired.

Hope it helps,
Adam

Hi. I'm new here, so please forgive me if there's any local etiquette I haven't noticed! I bought my first Lenovo machiine recently, which was an X230 from the UK Outlet Store. I was a bit surprised that this arrived with a "US International" keyboard rather than a UK one, but with a little bit of remapping I've made it work for me, and I like the machine very much :-) However, I've found that when typing fast the left shift doesn't always seem to register. I can't pin down exactly what causes it in terms of the part of the key that's pressed or anything, because it doesn't occur if I slow down to examine what's going on... but it's getting quite frustrating to miss capital letters off so many sentences! Is this slightly hard-to-define problem something that Lenovo would easily resolve under warrenty? And could it be done without me having to send the machine back to them? (Because it's from the Outlet Store it has a return-to-base warrenty, but I understand that the keyboard is a user replacable unit?) Thanks for any advice.Simon.

Hey everyone, Is there any where to get some kind of screenshot or something that would show the Windows 8 desktop running on the Helix to see just how large it is?  I have an X230 which I switched months ago for a MacBook Air 13" as I liked the bigger screen.  I really like the look of the Helix though and am really considering getting it but I'm so nervous at the 11" only display.  I'm using my X230 right now and always found the 12" fine as well as the keyboard on it.  I know the Helix has a much higher resolution but I'm concerned for one thing that things will be way too tiny on it and hard to read, or that even with scaling on it, it will be the opposite in that it's like using a system with a really low resolution.  Does anyone have any feedback on how it compares to say the X230 display, in terms of screen real estate and so on? My other concern is the keyboard.  I plan on using this as my every day business laptop, so basically 8 hours a day on it with the Lenovo portalble USB monitor attached.  All the reviews seem to praise the keyboard and no one seems to say anything about it being too small etc but I just want to make sure it's not like getting a netbook or something where it's cramped and what not. Any feedback would be appreciated thanks!

G'day. I started having an issue with my x230 thinkpad about 8 months ago. It would only turn occasionally after pressing the power button. It appeared to get worse and worse and eventually wouldn't turn on at all. Unit is out of warranty, took it to a Lenovo authorised repair centre who couldn't find any issues with it although for some unknown reason as they were putting it back together it magically started working. The issue reared up again and now I'm back to square one. I started troubleshooting it myself and found partial success as follows: If I remove the battery and power cable. unplug the CMOS battery (which has been replaced) and leave it for a few minutes THEN plug only the power cable back in, it boots! Once it has booted, I shut it down. Plug CMOS battery, main battery and power cable in and it will NOT boot. I repeat the process of unplugging and draining power, boot with just the power cable in and it works. Hardware Scan comes up good. HDD is tested fine. Battery has plenty of life. Unit has been very well looked after and never dropped. Any help would be much appreciated. I'm trying to figure out whether to cut my losses or not. Cheers Dave Product 2306CTOSerial: R9W1TPBIOS: G2ET31WW(1.11)

Answer:X230 Issues with booting.

Hello and welcome,

I went through something like this with a different model.  Various gyrations would let it power on.  Turned out to be a bad power button.

I realize that sounds unlikely - and maybe isn't your situation - but it's maybe worth checking if you can lay hands on a keyboard to test with.

Hi there,  I was hoping someone could help me. I have an i5/8GB/128msata(Samsung) x230 that refuses to change screen resolutions when running a windows OS. Whenever I attempt to change the resolution ( whether it be through Intel management app or windows display setting) the drop down menu flickers/ flashes off before I have a chance to make a selection. This happens when connected to an external display as well as the notebook's LCD. This behavior happens before drivers are installed as well as after think Vantage has been installed and patched up after clean builds of Windows7 OR 8 have been installed. By this stage I thought that a hardware component was faulty. But after installing a copy of ubuntu I am able to change resolutions without any problems which is leading me to think that there is a misconfiguration somewhere within the windows environments. The only other factor I am considering is an out of date firmware on the MSSD. As the laptop doesn't have a CD-Rom drive, how is it possible to create a USB bootible drive from the iso provided on the lenovo support website? Thanks is Advance

I have two users with X230 Tablets and recently the Ultranav would stop working - seemingly randomly and occasionally. I upgraded both users to the most recent version of the BIOS and UltraNav driver - version 16.2.19.13 - and the issue has actually become worse. I've disabled/enabled, uninstalled, reinstalled and the issues keep coming back. I can get the UltraNav working - but after undocking (following the proper undocking procedure), closing the lid, the tablet going to sleep and hibernating - the UltraNav TrackPoint and TouchPad both become disabled. Interestingly, before the user logs in - both the TrackPoint and TouchPad will both work, then disable again as soon as the user logs in and the options for UltraNav are completely greyed out until I uninstall and re-install the driver. I'm at a loss.

Having the exact same issue with an x230 tablet.  Currently the only thing that works is reinstalling drivers, but the issue keeps resurfacing.

Hi,
I have a few issues with some laptops of mine that I have yet to resolve......but one of them I do need some advice on. I have bought a second hand laptop wheer the mouse works but the keyboard is unresponsive. Because I have only ever dealt with software before, I have no idea where to start with hardware problems such as this. Before I take it to the repair shop is there any advice as to anything I could try please?

Answer:Mouse/pointer works but not keyboard. What now, please?

Firstly, plug in a USB keyboard to see if that works. If it does, it may be the ribbon cable underneath the keyboard, or a driver problem..

On a HP Laptop running 2k w/sp4, I installed the O/S then the updated driver for the nVidia GeForce 440 video chipset (from HP's site for that notebook) BEFORE I installed DX9 and lost the pointer and use of the keyboard.
No other drivers or s/w was installed.
I uninstalled the video driver, but no luck. As I remember you can't uninstall a DX update, correct? I don't know if it was the DX9 or installing it after the video driver where the issue lies.

I can get inro safe mode and the keyboard and pointer are ok there. Besides playing musical chairs and disabling drivers one at a time is there something else I can do?

Answer:Lost pointer and keyboard after DX9 install

This might do the trick for you.

I have a Lenovo ThinkPad X230 (which I love dearly) and have a few question about ports and booting.  I would first like to verify that the port on the left side of the laptop directly above one of the USB ports is indeed an ExpressCard 54.  I have searched the web, but have yet to find a definite answer, and my user manual simply stated "ExpressCard."  Furthermore, I would like to know if it is possible to boot an operating system from said port using an ExpressCard 34 SSD (64GB).  I have the intention of installing openSUSE 12.3 to the potential SSD and be able to boot from it.  I greatly appreciate any help.  I  would post an image of said port, but I am being told the image file is much too large.

Yes, this slot is indeed for the Expresscard and no, unfortunately you cannot boot from it.

I've bought the Lenovo X230 with the broken battery (the PM showes 68% charging and no more, asks for the battery replacement). I've tried 3 different good-working batteries from X220 which were supposed to work on X230, but they don't. When starting the laptop with that battery, it stops with the information:" The battery installesd is not supported by this system and will not charge. Please replace the battery with the correct Lenovo battery for this system. Press the ESC to continue".  And after pressing the ESC key, it starts to work, but the PM still writes that the battery is not correct and it doesn't charge. What could it be?

Answer:Lenovo x230 battery problem

Hi,x230 doesn't support the batteries of old 29 series (x220 did). Only hw protected batteries 44 series are being supported by x230 (and 19+ series, external).Batteries of 29 series can only be discharged in x230.Try to perform the original (x230's) battery reset using Lenovo power manager feature.
