Windows 8.1 - Lenovo system update X230

Question: Windows 8.1 - Lenovo system update X230

Hi Everyone, I have Lenovo ThinkPad X230, that came with windows 7 preinstalled, as i have VLA from microsoft, i wanted to upgrade to windows 8.1. I did the clean install, set the bios correctly, enabled secure boot, installed with no problems at all, however after installation of system update, it cant find any updates, all other software and drivers are still missing. It found more updates for win 8, but still not all of them. Please help me! I have this laptop few days already, and still didnt get to use it propperly, as i try to get system update to work.. Windows 8.1 PRO x64ThinkPad x2302325 no9 Upgraded RAM to 8GB, HDD to 250 GB 7200 RPM. Just to clarify, i know system update works fine on my network, as my X200 Tablet with windows 7 x64 gets all of them, so it is not a network issue. Regards Lukas

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Backstory: I finally got around to performing some updates on my X230 that I usually keep on internal LAN running machines.  It has Win 7 Pro SP1 installed and I checked the update for KB2459268 through Lenovo's recommended software update at the time and thought nothing of it when everything installed and updated properly.  Restarting my machine and RDP to a host and everything worked as normal.  Then putting the X230 to sleep and.... the screen went off like normal, the power button did the usual beating light like normal, but the computer did not sleep!  It kept running and worst yet, did not respond whatsoever to ANY keyboard input, ctrl alt del, esc, power button, nothing!!!  I finally had to force shutdown and figured, probably a glitch.  Did the same process again and yep, it seemed to sleep.  Woke it up, tried it again, and sure enough, same issue (no sleep and no response). I kept getting the same issue for the next week so finally I did a clean install with Win 7 SP1 on a wiped drive, ran the lenovo software update with the KB checked, and tried it again.  SAME ISSUE!!!!  Now I was sure it wasnt a driver issue, and probably not hardware (I guess it could be).  So I uninstalled the KB from programs and features yesterday and the 4x times I used it, no issue.  Leads me to think there is something going on with the KB. How to replicate:Install KB.  Log into an RDP server using the X230.  Issue s... Answer:Windows update KB2459268 from Lenovo Software update broke my X230 on RDP/ sleep I think

The KB2459268 is Microsoft hotfix (not a regular important update) A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing the problem described in this article. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix. Uninstall it. It is 5 years old so it might be already resolved by a regular update. Do not install everything Lenovo offers, select individual updates only.

@All: I am going to get a new T420s in a few days and since I have never owned a TP, I have a couple of questions for more experienced users. I apologize in advance if the questions sound silly, but I am wondering whether Win Update and Lenovo System Update may get in each other's way and mess things up in the system by overwriting drivers, or do they have nothing to do with each other? Also, what about the power management settings? I hear that Lenovo is quite rich in that, so I am wondering whether these can conflict with Windows7 settings and in case which ones should I prefer and how to bypass the other ones? Thanks a zillion.

Answer:[TP Newbie] Windows Update vs Lenovo System Update + Win vs Lenovo Power Management

win. update handles wins. & TVSU handles system software updates & a few win. updates so you need both, TVPM will override win power settings so if you want to use win. just uninstall TVPM but I think TVPM does the job just fine afterall its built for the system

Description of problem: at some point when playing audio, sound will cut out. The levels will still be moving on the mixer, but no sound will come through the speakers or sound jack. It seems that soon after I've closed all sound-producing applications, sound returns. I am 50-75% sure that this is strictly a sound jack issue, as I don't remember being able to reproduce the issue without the sound jack being active when the audio drops out. Frequently, bumping my headphones' cord seems to cause the problem, but other times, the problem seems to happen on a click, a loud sound, or seemingly nothing at all.

I am unsure of how to reliably reproduce the problem, so it is difficult to diagnose whether or not the problem can be reproduced when the sound jack is not active. This isn't common use for me...

Origin: Appeared mid-October, around the same time I had upgraded to the newest drivers (where the old ones were from earlier than May 2013). All were downloaded through the Lenovo website and/or Lenovo's System Update utility, with the exception of the Intel graphics drivers, which were downloaded through the Intel website. At this point, I was running Windows 8, not Windows 8.1. I installed Windows 8.1 recently, and the problem remains.

What I've tried: disabling drivers, reinstalling drivers, disabling sound effects, disabling audio application overrides...

What I haven't tried: rolling back drivers (being honest, I have a bit of trouble believing that this is strictly ... Read more

I called Lenovo and got my Windows 8 recovery disc shipped out free of charge ten minutes later. I have a case number to prove it! This is so awesome.I didn't say anything except that I didn't know why windows won't start, I didn't know why recovery wont start, and I needed my discs so that I could get things working again. That's the last time I let my mischievious daughter play with my laptop before I get it all set up. Hi. I've got an x230 with Windows 10 installed(Build 10240) and have bought a bluetooth bdc (FRU 60Y3305) and installed it into the laptop. Device manager is unable to see the bluetooth chip before or after I've instlled any of the drivers. I have tried a number of different driver packages. Some have come back with windws saying that "Broadcom Bluetooth Software doesn't work on this version of windows" and one that a number of people seem to have got working said that it couldn't detect any Broadcom Bluetooth hardware. I have a feeling that this isnt going to work  but some people on the internet seem to have got it to work!? Has andybody got any info on this? Thanks

Hi all,Apologies if I've missed this elsewhere - new to the forums so still learning to navigate. As background, machine type listed below:X230 Laptop (ThinkPad) - Machine Type 2325, Model BA6As I see it I'm having two separate issues here but they may well be linked: Recent Windows 10 updates are making the taskbar fully ineffective - I note this is fairly common and have tried the powershell route to check updates to no avail; curious to know what the advice here generally is, if X230 is no good with Windows 10 or is there something specific I should be doing to rectify this. This weekend, my laptop has developed a habit whereby the sound and video playback stops working suddenly. On boot-up it's fine but after a while, I can't listen to music or watch videos at all. Bit alarmed about this but suspect it may be linked to the thunderstorm on Thursday (based in London...), given I woke up to realise the powerboard on my TV had also gone. My laptop is within warranty so hopefully if it's hardware related, I would hope this is covered - in truth, I was reassured about the Lenovo warranty but have never had cause to use it at home or work over the last 6 years of using Lenovos.Any help or guidance would be massively appreciated!Kind regards,Bal

Is there any solution to constant system failure to a level where the blue screen turns up and laptop can't be even turned on, after every system update?

I've checked the drivers and everything, but since the big update pack somewhere in March every update ends up in system failure. And the restore points before the updates are useless, because system doesn't recognize them.

After the second time this has happened and I've lost all the files that has not been backed up on hard drive I really start to think is there something wrong to Lenovo and Windows 7 combination?

I almost start to regret that I have legal version with update option.

Hello, I recently purchased x230 with Windows 8.I installed Ubuntu 12.0 (attempting to dual boot).  Unfortuantely, Windows 8 is no longer accessible(UEFI error comes up on boot), the restore partition is also corrup ("required partition cannot be found").I attempted to install win 8 PRO that I purchased from scratch.  It failes because the Windows 8 key embedded into the EFI doesn't match the new Windows 8 PRO that I have on DVD. I chatted with Lenovo support, asking to purchase restore DVDs for my laptop - I was told that it's not possible (after going thorugh a couple of people and wasting 1.5 hours on chat_ Please provide some support as it is unacceptable that I cannot install clean version of WIndows 8 and the restore disks are not available from Lenovo. Thank You.

In my quest to solve this problem, I ran Lenovo System Update for the first time this morning.   It broke my NVidia driver, which I had just updated manually, leaving me with a 1024x768 px screen and no OpenGL or DirectX, and NVidia Control Centre believed I don't have an NVidia GPU installed.  (I have an NVS 4200M.)  I tried simply repeating the manual update procedure, but it still isn't working, and now NVidia Control Centre doesn't launch at all. I've also gotten a pop-up window saying, "Windows Activation Technologies detected that this copy of Windows is not genuine and has attempted to make repairs."  That's never happened before, and my copy of Windows is definitely genuine. Please let me know if you know what may have caused these problems and how to fix them. Thanks, ?Chris

Hello World, our company bought 3 Thinkpads as above. Two were installed with Windows XP SP2 as a multilanguage-installation( from the company). To install the ethernet I used an usb-stick with the drivers. No problems so long. After updating the system with system-update from Lenovo, it shows in the devicemanager that 7 usb root hubs have code 39( driver could not be loaded. Driver is defective or not present). The connection of usb-devices will now not be recognized( no new item in devicemanager, no sound of recognization). This behaviour is on both machines after the update. To verfy the problem I changed the hdd from the "untouched" with one of the XP-machines. Under this Vista everythings works fine. After rechange of the hdd usb will not be recognized again. Any Idea which update could be responsible and how to remove it?

Answer:Lenovo T61P 6458-5KU USB-Problems after System-Update Windows XP SP2

A workaround: I found out that the 7 usb-controllers were installed with drivers from Intel. The reinstall of the windows-drivers provide a solution to connect usb-devices again. After installing the windows-drivers for the controllers the yellow exclamation mark of the usb-root-hubs vanished also. Now it is necessary that Lenovo changes the defective intel-drivers to working models. But this is not in my hands...

X230 Laptop, 8GB RAM, Intel Graphics 4000 series, SS180GB SSD. Problem occurs with laptop in the Ultra Base Series 3 dock or out of it. - VGA or DisplayPort. Laptop came with Windows 7, was upgraded to Windows 8 and then Windows 8.1 and then the 8.1 update. Problem started when Windows 8.1 was initially installed.

When connected to an external Monitor (HP ZR2240W or a Dell 2412Mb) with either display port or VGA (VGA on Dell only), Windows Explorer will stop working, open programs will show not responding. Mouse still functional, and if cursor is placed in the "taskbar" area, you will get a blue spinning circle. A double click of the mouse in that area will generally cause a relaunch of Windows Explorer (screen area goes blue, then repopulates with the icons) and things will work fine for a number of program launchs or switching between programs, then the problem will occur again. This will happen up to 20+ times per day.

Laptop has the latest BIOS installed from Lenovo, Intel Graphics Driver 10.18.10.3621. Have tried three different keyboard and mouse options (Microsoft wireless keyboard and mouse, Logitech wireless keyboard and mouse, and a hard wired keyboard and mouse) and problem follows each. Friday I reloaded Windows 8.1 with the most recent updates and problem continues.

Windows 8 does not play nice with older hardware, especially older Intel hardware. You did not post if you are using the 32-bit or 64-bit version of Windows 8.1. Intel does have updated drivers for that GPU. https://downloadcenter.intel.com/Sea...01&FamilyId=39

Try the latest drivers and see if that works. As for changing the motherboard. You would not be able to do so with a Laptop. Since they are specific to the case.

Hello,

It has been some time since I have been to sevenforums. I have missed you guys!

I was here almost every hour on the hour back when I built my PC and was installing windows7 for the first time. Now I have a new laptop and I would like some expert advice!

I bought a new, to me, Lenovo X230 Thinkpad recently and it came with windows7 installed. I am a person who enjoys simplicity, uncluttered space, and efficiency. In my desktop, and overall in my OS. Are there any tips, or guidelines for trimming down many of the programs and extraneous applications that come along with nearly every manufacturers' computers today? Should I reinstall a clean version of windows7? Is that possible with only the recovery partition on the laptop?

For example, I don't need 2 battery power applications. Either disable or remove the windows battery manager, or the Lenovo. Things like that.

I would also like to remove and backup the recovery partition from the laptop, but it doesn't have an optical drive. Then I could have more space, and only one partition. Not sure the best way to go about this. I have an external drive that I can backup the partition to.

If you want any more information about the current state of the laptop, just ask! I enjoy conversing and learning from the good people here.

Thanks again guys... glad to be back!

Why would Lenovo System Update and Windows Update have two different numbers assigned to the same update?? Or "are" they the same update?? I found that in SP1 KB931263 appears to be KB929191 from Lenovo System Update. Anyway I uninstalled SP1 and KB929191 from Lenovo System Update went rite in. I then reinstalled SP1 and all is ok now. I probably didn't have to do this but it bothers me when updates don't install. I also uninstalled all the other updates on my computer that were installed prior to the release of SP1, because most, but not all of these updates are included in SP1. Again I probably didn't need to do this because I would guess that when installing SP1 it would ignore updates that are already installed??? Who knows??? Just a bit of probably useless information for someone that I thought I would share. Cheers, Singtoh

HiI just got my x230 today and was playing around with the system restore (f11) function since I want to upgrade the hdd to ssd soon. The machine comes with windows 8.  After booting into the recovery patriton, I clicked through "trouble shoot" then advanced options then "system image recovery" .However the restore program complains right away that a system image cannot be found. Has anyone tried this? I searched for a while and couldnt find anything so decided to create an account ask my question directly here. thanks

Answer:X230 windows 8 system restore

I have two x230 I got last week. I have proved that the Recovery Drive you create from within Win8 does not restore properly. THe PC will not boot.I called Lenove and got them to ship me recovery DVDs, which took 1.5 hrs, but did recreat the machine.  I have since found out that there startup and recovery software have been completely re-written with security in mind, but creating a nightmare for those of who regularly image and restore drives.  The big change is something called UEFI BIOS, which need to be configured for SECURE Boot to be OFF, if you want to boot from any external device that contains a different OS.  I use Active Disk Boot from LSOFT.NET for years, to image and repartition XP, Vista and Win7 drives, with 100% reliability. I have restore 500GB Win 2003 servers using RAID5 with SAS drives with this software. But with WIN8, it creates an image without problems, but after a restore, the Windows Boot Manager cannot find the System boot files.  So get Recovery Disks from Lenovo ASAP.  BTW, the reinstallation process is fully documented on Lenovo's web site and is accurate:http://download.lenovo.com/express/WIN8-DWGRD.html#win8

I got my X230 Tablet recently and want to run it under Windows 8. After upgrading yesterday, the Touch Screen refuses to work: the position is always in the bottom right corner, but clicking is recognized. The effect is that all windows are closed and opened alternately when touching the screen. Quite annoying, in particular as in Windows 8 the Touch screen would be actually very useful. I updates all drivers and bios, as far as possible, but the Touch Screen behavior remained. Somebody suggested that a clean installation of Windows 8 does lead to a well working Touch Screen. I tried it once, but after about two hours of computer work, Windows came back with the message that the installation failed, and thus I stay with my non working Touch Screen. What do I have to do to get my Touch Screen working again? The Wacom Pen is fine, so I can live with the X230 for the time being, but working with my fingers on the screen would be actually nice - and it beats those iBooks by lengths. Who has ideas?

Hi Whhsu,

Welcome to Lenovo Community!

As per your query we understood that you are facing the issue with mute button on ThinkPad X230.

The normal procedure for updating the system to Windows 8.1 is that when you are in Windows 8 you have to update all the drivers first and then you have to update Windows 8.1.

To resolve the issue now please download Hotkey feature application from Lenovo support site and install it.

Below is the link to enter the downloads page and download latest application accordingly, please click on "Select Product" then in "QUICK PATH" enter the MTM no. select the exact model.

I hope this is the correct place to post - did not see a E series in the ThinkPad Board... I am getting an error when trying to update to Lenovo System Update version 5.07.0065.I recently upgraded the computer form Windows 7 to Windows 10. Trying to make sure my drivers were up-to-date I ran across the newer version of the System Update app. When I tried to install, it gave me this error:The old version is now none existant in Programs and Features. Any ideas? All are appreciated!  Thanks.

Why does the System Update of Lenvo doesn't regornize my IdeaCentre Q190????

Answer:Lenovo IdeaCentre Q190 (Lenovo System Update) fails

Hi Michael222,
Do you get this message after clicking Next:

See this link for the systems that support the Lenovo System Update:

http://download.lenovo.com/pccbbs/thinkvantage_en/systemupdate503-2013-10-31.txt

Even though the System Update wouldn't work on an A520, as it couldn't find any packages for my A520, it still suppressed the warning on the LSC about needing "software updates" I think you might find the same problem when running the updater on your Q190.

I wanted to run the Lenovo Solution Center, and it wouldn't work without the System Update to confirm that I don't have an  "applicable package for your system" Once run, I didn't have any more "!" errors on the LSC Toolbox Launch Icon on the taskbar.

http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/IdeaCentre-Desktops-Home-Servers/Q190-and-Lenovo-Solution-Center-Softwar...

So to put simply, the LSC, and the Lenovo System Updater, have been built for the Think branded systems. Your IdeaCentre Q190 is not on the list, HOWEVER that doesn't mean that it wouldn't work, just that it's Not Supported.

Hi everyone, Last night I updates the camera and smart card drivers from Lenvo website. Immediately after the update, the camera simply stopped working. I have tried multiple things since then, including uninstalling and re-installing the driver multiple times, trying to change the driver defaul USB Video Device, etc. But now I can't even see the camera listed in the Device Manager even after checking the Show Hidden Devices option. Let me know if someone has any idea what to do about this. Thanks!

Today I reloaded Windows 8.1 with the most recent updates and problem continues. I feel that it might be a graphics adapter (Intel 4000) problem. Only solution there is a motherboard replacement. In multiple searches on the "net," I could not find anything... Read more

Hi everyone, my setup - Windows 8.1, Intel Dual Band Wireless AC 7260 with Bluetooth integrated. After installing latest Bluetooth package from Intel (via Lenovo System Update), I lost Bluetooth permanently. - I tried to uninstall the driver update, nothing changed.- I tried to restore via Windows Restore Point (I made a fresh restore point before installing these updates), no success... I have noticed that: - When this happened, the fingerprint reader behaved strange - it didn't light up (with green light) at the Windows start, and Windows was asking me for a password instead of fingerprint.- In device manager. Bluetooth category disappeared (I was there before the upgrade - for sure.). but I saw a new unrecognized device which name ended with something like "(Device Enumeration failed)" - this could propably be the Bluetooth card.- The tray icon for Bluetooth disappeared.- The Bluetooth submenu of the System and Devices option in Windows Settings disappeared (and it was there before). - Searching for Bluetooth in Windows 8.1 setting (with Win + W hotkey) athough returned "Configure Bluetooth Devices" or similar, but when I clicked it, it couldn't navigate to that option - just took me to the main settings screen. I had to do a system restore using Linux (fortunately made a full HD image backup of both HDD and SSD drives using Clonezilla - that was the only way to repair this actually - instead of full reinstall of Windows). The only driver that ... Lenovo System Update tells me that all is up to date! I searched at Lenovo for new drivers for windows 8.1They asked me exactly what notebook I use. For the x1 carbone 3460-4LG (checked 3 times because I couldn't believe it) they discribed my computer as:i7-3667U(3.2GHz), 4GB RAM, 256GB Solid State Drive, 14in 1600x900 LCD, Intel HD Graphics, Intel 802.11agn wireless, WWAN, 1Gb Ethernet, UltraNav, Secure Chip, 4c Li-Ion, Win8 Pro 64. My notebook has 8GB RAM, 180GB SSD and (as I believe) no carbone x1 has 1GB Ethernet, because it has no network connector at all! So first question: can I believe the suggestions of lenovo for new drivers? There are several drivers released in October 2013 that I surely do not have already installed. That means, Lenovo System Update doesn't work any more, without error message! Question two: Has Lenovo a solution to repair their defective updater? Or will they release a solution? Very disappointed regards.Alex

Answer:After Win 8.1 update - Lenovo System Update defective (doesn't find updates any more)

Yes we have the same Problem with Thinkpad x230, T530 and W530. Under Windows 8.1 System Update doesen't find any drivers. So now we have to download every single driver..... I hope really Lenovo will find a solution very soon......

First issue: When I first started and set up my new Edge 15, Lenovo Companion cleary showed a temperature reading for the CPU.    The screen shot for this app also shows a "Health Check" icon but this is not showing on my laptop.  At some point this feature (CPU temp reading) vanished.   A call to tech support was inconclusive.  The rep advised windows update took it away. Second issue:  Lenovo system update starts, finds and update then soon after quits with a popup: "No packages available for device."    Does this indicate it found something but fails, or that there's no updates available?  If it's the latter, it is an odd way to indicate such.   Interested in a fix por both of these issues.  Thank you

I have had my Dell 8700 for little over a year and have had problems from the beginning.  I am 72 years old, and I am at my wits end!!!

A hard drive was replaced in the summer of 2015, but I have still had problems with the computer shutting down and my having to refresh it to factory setting.

I thought updating to Windows 10 would solve some problems, and I did this in October, 2015.  Everything was fine until a couple of months ago.  The end result was when I tried to refresh the computer to factory defaults, it went back to 8.0 or 8.1, and I evidently lost something in the process.
Now, I cannot update to Windows 10 and when I tried to resinstall the Dell Operating System, I get for both:  "WE COULDN'T UPDATE THE SYSTEM RESERVED PARTITION."
I DO HAVE A SYSTEM BACKUP ON 20 CDS (MADE WHEN I HAD WINDOWS 10).  Could I reinstall the system with these backupdisks?  How do I do that?  I also have a Dell 2 Boot USP stick, I have a recovery stick, too, but it semed that when I used this, I received a message that not all files were recovered
What should I do at this point?

Answer:Error message when trying to update to Windows 10 or to reinstall operating system 8.1: We couldn't update the system reserved partition."

On MBR disk, Windows 10 requires a 500MB system reserved partition, while 100MB in Windows 7, so you can try to extend system reserved partition.
In disk management, you can only extend partition using the unallocated space next to its right side. so even if you shrink D: drive, the option to extend the efi partition is still grayed out. My suggestion is to use a third party software, AOMEI Partition Assistant, both the standard (free) or the Professional(paid) version can extend partition as long as there is unallocated space on that hard drive. to see more information read:

Answer:New Lenovo X230

You can do two things: 1. Go to Windows Anytime Upgrade and purchase the Pro feature. This is the easiest way to upgrade, but it costs a small amount to do this. 2. Try booting from the Windows 7 DVD and see if it will let you start it and install the upgrade. You will need the license key from the Windows 7 DVD to do this. ... JDH

Nothing I can do... PC doesn't react to anything. Was working fine before shut down. What is wrong??? What can I do? Help!

Answer:lenovo x230 - Does not boot!!!

fre_madrid,1. unplug power cable and battery, press and hold the power button during 30 sec, plug the battery and cable again, try to boot laptop.2. OR if you are familiar with disassembling of keyboard and palmrest do it, then unplug connector of small yellow battery under palmrest (near FPR) during several minuts. Assemble the laptop and try to boot. If laptop will boot go to BIOS setup, press F9 and save default settings, set and save your settings. If that actions will not resolve the issue I'm afraid you have to contact with Lenovo support.

Question: Lenovo X230 setup

Hi, everyone,A quick question. I have an x230 on the way and am looking to set up my workspace in a specific way. Here is what I want: an external monitor that will allow me to move the cursor from the laptop screen to the other monitor. So, in essence, a dual monitor set-up but with the laptop screen as one of the monitors. I would also like to be able to use a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse while in this set-up. Do I need the UltraSeries 3 dock, or something else? Thanks!Parker

Answer:Lenovo X230 setup

Hi, Parker

You should be able to accomplish this without a docking station. The X230 supports a dual independent display and has a VGA port and a Mini DisplayPort. So if you have a monitor with one of these connections and hook it up to your laptop, then it should work. You will need to make sure that you Extend the display and not Duplicate it. Duplicate will give you the same image on both screens. You can just use Win + P to set it appropriately.

As for the Bluetooth keyboard and mouse, you should have no issues here either. Provided Bluetooth is turned on in the system and you have compatible Bluetooth peripherals, it should work like a charm once they've been paired.

Hope it helps,
Adam

Answer:Lenovo Think Pad x230 and mSATA SSD

Hi, odessit

This should be possible. There is a slot for an mSATA drive in the X230, as shown here. Also shown in that link is that an mSATA is a user-replaceable part. After purchasing your SSD, then all you will need to do is install it per the instructions here (pp. 70) Also, you will likely need to download this firmware update after installing the drive. This will allow the BIOS to recognize the SSD if you plan to use it as the C: drive of the system. The update can be found here.

Hope it helps,
Adam

Hi All! I'm sorry to sound like a bit of a newb here, but i'm looking for a little bit of assistance with my x230 laptop.  I bought the laptop back in september with windows 7 professional.  A couple months later, I upgraded to windows 8 only to not really like it too much and decide for now I want to revert back to Windows 7.  Not knowing what my options were, I installed Windows 7 Ultimate back on the machine through an external cd drive, but now I'm missing about 100gb from my main drive, I ordered a 500gb 7200 rpm drive but now I only have about 350 GB available after the clean install.  I wasn't too sure how the recovery options on the x230 worked.  I see that next to my main C drive, there is another drive there located "Recovery" It has about 75% of the disk space being taken up but there is absolutely nothing within the actual drive when I actually click it.  It's probably too late, but is there any way to actually take my laptop back to the way it was when I first bought it? I only ask because it seems there's something on that recovery drive but I just can't figure out what it is.  I would appreciate any help at all, I'm sorry for sounding like such a newb with this stuff!

Answer:Lenovo x230 Recovery

Hi, Flyerfan16

If you are viewing your drives in Disk Management, how big is the Recovery partition? The partitions from Lenovo are normally between 7 GB and 10 GB when the machine ships. If the original partition is still on the drive, then you should be able to recover to the settings when the machine was first purchased.

You can attempt recovery by starting the machine as normal and then pressing Enter repeatedly to interrupt startup. A menu should then appear, with an option available to recover your system. Press the associated key for this action and then follow the prompts. If all works well, you should be able to go back to the way it was. If you choose this option, make sure to back up all files that you wish to keep that are currently on the system.

Hope it helps,
Adam

Hello,So, first of all, I'm not english, so I'm sorry for the following mistakes.Let's start.1 year ago I've bought a lenovo x230 netbook with Windows 8, intel core i7 + 8 gb ram + SSD. [still using these specs]Okay. After 1 month of usage, the display started to have some problems. From the left to right, the 3/7 part of the display is changing in all the colors while using. It depends on what color is the page opened. If it's white, this part of the display is black with some "running" white lines, if it's blue - red and so on.No problem ; acording to the warranty, the display has been changed. It was ok.Since august 2014 I didn't use the laptop again. I started using it in April 2015. In may, the display started to have that problem again, but I've read on your forum that I need to put the display on 60Hz and on High performance mode to fix it, and that's what I did. At the beggining of June, the problem was back, and it is still on 60Hz and high performance mode.3 days ago, my laptop started to make another problem ; CHARGING.It doesn't want to charge.  If I just plug in, it stays with the battery on 0%, and it doesn't open because of the missing electricity, but I've realised something. If I move the end of the charger [near the part which get into that yellow circle where the end of the charger must be, hope you understand] higher than 10-15 CMs it DOES charge. But now it doesn't charge even if I put it in the position I've said before. [by the way, in the... Read more

Hi! Hi have this "stupid" question about Lenovo System Update- program. So I bought this computer about three weeks ago. Last week the nDivia icon in right bottom corner started to say that I could update graphics card driver version from 296.90 to 306.23 . I didn't update it because I remembered that when I bought the computer the salesman said that the Windows-updates and Lenovo System Update are all what I have to run. The next day I went back to the shop where I bought the computer. Again the salesman said that I don't have to update the graphics card driver because "it could mess up the system".  So the question is should the Lenovo System Update update also the graphics card driver version when the next needed version comes out or should I update it myself? Thanks already for help and sorry for my bad English (from Finland).  _JK_

Answer:Lenovo System Update on E530

Anyone? So the question simply is should I update the graphic card drivers with nDivia-updater or does the Lenovo System Update update those?  Now I also ran to a other problem. I delete the Lenovo Solutions for Small Business Advantage Customization software because I thought that I don't need it. Now every time when I start the computer I get this error:  Should I Install the software again or what? I can't delete the whole Lenovo Solutions for Small Business Advantage software. When I try to unistall it, it asks some password:  No password that I have ever used doesn't match... Some help please

Is the system update utility suppost to keep up with all the driver software? On several occasions it has not updated to what is available on the long list of drivers for my t430s. I've had to update the actual driver updater software manually twice now.

Houston, TX

Answer:Lenovo System Update t430s

Hi sr3tlaw,

System update only updates the driver critical to Lenovo and Microsoft firmwares and utilities.
The system update does not update drivers for third-party software and hardware

I just bought a lenovo p50. It came with windows 7, so I upgraded to windows 10. after update, lots of stuff doesn't work so I've been working my way through driver updates. I installed Lenovo System Update for windows 10 64 bit on p50, but after install I can't find any way to open it. It's not in the lenovo folder in the start menu or in the programs directory. I can't find it via search, and it's not listed in programs and features. However, if I try to install again it says there is a version already installed. How do I open this program?

Answer:Can't find Lenovo System Update

The program name is TVSU  (ThinkVantage System Update)

When i try to start the service it displays "Windows could not start the System Update service. Error 3: The system cannot find the path specified." Uninstalling and reinstalling system update gives the same result.

Answer:Lenovo system update won't launch

Hello, I had this issue too, check your version number in start> control panel> programs> unistall a program Then check that against software for machine type and serial number here http://support.lenovo.com/gb/en/?menu-id=lenovo_products_ I found that Lenovo had updated the "software update" program, once I unistalled the old one and download the new one it got the updates.

I upgraded to Windows 10 on my ThinkPad Twist. After that, I ran Lenovo's System Update and downloaded and installed all the recommended updates. Now when I reboot I get a message saying that C:\Program Files (X86)\Thinkpad\Utilities\PWMTR64V.dll is missing. Searching the Lenovo support site for this DLL file name shows that it is related to Windows 7 Power Management. However, one of the updates from Lenovo was Power Management for Windows 10. I am hesitant to install the Power Management update for Windows 7 (which I'm guessing will solve my missing DLL problem, but maybe not) after installing such an update specific to Windows 10. But I don't want to have to have that popup message about a missing DLL every time I boot. Anyone know how I can resolved this?

Is it possible to do a review of one's computer on the Lenovo website similar to what is done on one's computer by ThinkVantage SystemUpdate? My SysUpdate is not working. After uninstalling totally (all files, including hidden files) and reinstalling smoothly, I still get error message "error collecting user information." So I would like to be able to go to the Lenovo website and do a "scan" of my system that will tell me what needs updating, so I can update manually item by item. Help!

Answer:System update possible on Lenovo website?

There is no automated scan but you can go to the device driver matrix for your ThinkPad model, manually compare what's available there with what's installed on your system, then download/install any newer software.

What is the model of your ThinkPad and what version of Windows are you using?

Hey everyone!I ordered a x230 a few weeks ago and i realized i need bluetooth! I know i can purchase a dongle for a few dollars but i rather keep my USB ports free.Anyone know where I can purchase a bluetooth card so i can install it myself? - Or is it advised not to do that. What do you think I should do?

Answer:Lenovo x230 missing bluetooth!

2 options come to my mind1) you can look for bluetooth expresscard (x220 has a slot, so I'm guessing x230 has it as well)2) you can put it in mini-PCIe slot (for the WWAN card or mSATA SSD), assuming it's empty now, ie. you purchased without WWAN

I have a Lenovo ThinkPad X230 (which I love dearly) and have a few question about ports and booting.  I would first like to verify that the port on the left side of the laptop directly above one of the USB ports is indeed an ExpressCard 54.  I have searched the web, but have yet to find a definite answer, and my user manual simply stated "ExpressCard."  Furthermore, I would like to know if it is possible to boot an operating system from said port using an ExpressCard 34 SSD (64GB).  I have the intention of installing openSUSE 12.3 to the potential SSD and be able to boot from it.  I greatly appreciate any help.  I  would post an image of said port, but I am being told the image file is much too large.

I have a Lenovo x230 laptop with an i7 processor that starts the second time. This means that when you first turn on, there is a black screen. The restart must be forced and then normally turns on. I tried to use an external screen, tricks with disconnecting the battery and pressing the switch, CMOS battery, RAM memory replacement - nothing did not succeed. On this motherboard, the service replaced the BIOS chips due to failure in the upgrade. They said that the computer would not work anyway. The computer, however, works, but after the second launch - which is annoying. I have updated the BIOS on my own, which did not solve the problem. Once the computer starts, it works very steadily and without problems. I have not found a similar case anywhere on the internet.

Dear lenovo, My lenovo x230 has just started to give wierd 'band' on the display I have a 12.5" Premium HD (1366x768) LED Backlit Display. The lenovo was bought in June 2013. I have attached the relevant pictures. I can tilt the screen to a few positions where the band does not appear, it begins to appear when I move the screen. Is it only a wire/connection issue or will I have to replace the entire LED panel ? http://s18.postimg.org/op9qexa09/IMG_20140720_190452.jpg Thank you ;-) DVartak

Realized I posted this in the wrong place and it really belongs here I decided to look around to make sure my computer was even able to run an external GPU and found I have hit a wall. I flashed my BIOS to the newest version (like 2.67 or something?) but my TOLUD is 3.5 GB (dfa00000). I thought the BIOS update was supposed to fix this? I only have 8GB of RAM so the 16GB problem shouldn't affect me either? Anyone know what might be wrong? When reading some forums I saw that people who updated their BIOS were able to fix their problem as long as they only had 8 gigs of ram, which is why im confused I still have DFA00000. Will it still work regaurdless of this? I thought the update was supposed to fix this.

Dear support, My Thinkpad X230 (NZD78MH 12.5", 3520M, 180GB, W7) recently started to frequently overheat. It happens during rather normal operation, such as browsing the internet or playing video on youtube. This causes the fan to run on maximum capacity and computer processes to slow down significantly.  As the image shows below, taken after playing a random youtube video, temperatures of ~103°C are typical.  Should I have it serviced? Please help. Best regards, Matthias

Answer:Lenovo X230 FingerPrint Error

If you re-installed Windows and this problem still happens, I'd say there's a strong possibility that your fingerprint sensor has failed and needs to be replaced.  Even if the device looks OK in Device Manager, this really doesn't mean much.  All it means is that Windows can talk to the USB device that hosts the fingerprint sensor, but the fingerprint sensor itself could still be malfunctioning.

Some things that can help confirm hardware problem:
1.  Shut the system off, does fingerprint green LED flash slowly?  If so it means that the sensor contains some fingerprint templates so lets try to clear them.
2.  Turn the system on and press F1 to enter BIOS setup
3.  Go to the Security menu and choose Fingerprint, then clear the fingerprint sensor.  You should see a message about success or failure.  Failure definitely means HW problem.
4.  If you see a message about success clearing the fingerprint sensor from BIOS, then shut the system off again.  The green LED should not be flashing anymore because you cleared the sensor in BIOS.  If the green LED still flashes, then it means HW problem because the fingerprint templates were not really cleared.

So try the above steps to try to confirm the HW problem, or just call service in your country and request help.

I've bought the Lenovo X230 with the broken battery (the PM showes 68% charging and no more, asks for the battery replacement). I've tried 3 different good-working batteries from X220 which were supposed to work on X230, but they don't. When starting the laptop with that battery, it stops with the information:" The battery installesd is not supported by this system and will not charge. Please replace the battery with the correct Lenovo battery for this system. Press the ESC to continue".  And after pressing the ESC key, it starts to work, but the PM still writes that the battery is not correct and it doesn't charge. What could it be?

Answer:Lenovo x230 battery problem

Hi,x230 doesn't support the batteries of old 29 series (x220 did). Only hw protected batteries 44 series are being supported by x230 (and 19+ series, external).Batteries of 29 series can only be discharged in x230.Try to perform the original (x230's) battery reset using Lenovo power manager feature.
