X1 Carbon Touch: have to push the power button twice to boot the system

Question: X1 Carbon Touch: have to push the power button twice to boot the system

This is what always happened when I booted up the computer: First time when I pressed the power button, the computer was on for just 2-3 seconds showing the "Lenovo" logo, and then automatically went back to power-off with nothing happened further. And then I pressed the power button again, the computer booted and loaded the operating system without any problem. Even though I'm able to start the computer in this way eventually, it is very annoying. It happens every time when I cold started the system (no such a problem if I simply restart the computer). Anyone knows why I have to push the power button twice to boot the system? I suspect it's something related to the rapid start technology, but cannot locate the exact reason. Anyone else has the similar problem? I have a Windows 8.1 now, but the problem existed when I was still using Windows 8. After I upgraded to 8.1, the problem still exists.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Is there any way I can get my windows 10 tablet to response to just one screen tap to push a button on a windows application I am running? Have to push power button twice to power up. First time it acts like it is starting up, disks start to spin, fans at high speed, then shuts off. Second time it powers up OK. ??

I have set my Surface Pro 4 to hibernate when ever I press the power button and it has done so admirably since I purchased it. Now, for some reason, it will only shut down. I have double checked my advanced power settings and it says it is set to hibernate on both battery and when plugged in yet it still gives me the "Slide to shut down your PC" option when I push the button. The only changes I have made recently are to install Intel's Beta 520 drivers and to install the new cumulative update for 1511 that MS released yesterday.

Answer:Hibernate is not working when I push the power button.

I am having the same issue on my laptop. Any suggestions?

I just reformated my old system to install fresh Win2K, got all the service pack updates and just found out when first turning off the system I have to push the power button just like using Win95 or AT motherboard. I look in the bios, old DELL computer, it doesn't have the "soft off" feature.

One thing I notice in the bios is I didn't turn on the Plug and Play OS, set it back but nothing changed. How to fix this problem? It's very annoying when I have to wait Win2K doing the routine to turn off and have to push the button when the message "It is now safe to turn off your computer".

Answer:Need to push the power button to turn off computer

There is a setting in the BIOS setip to enable or disable ACPI support. If enabled, Windows should install as an "ACPI Uniprocessor PC" (look in Device Manager) and will handle IRQs automatically. Shutdown also works the way it is supposed to.

If ACPI is disabled in the BIOS at the time Windows was installed, the CPU will show in Device Manager as a "Standard PC", IRQ assignments can be modified by the user, and Shutdown doesn't really work. You just get a "It is safe to turn off your computer" screen.

Unfortunately, enabling ACPI support in the BIOS doesn't work after Windows is installed. You have to change the HAL (very tricky) or reinstall Windows.

I have a Gateway desktop with windows XP. When I turn on the pc the monitor goes right into standby before I can see anything. The pc seems to be booting up just like it used to I can hear the fan and even the disc drives if I put a disc in. First I was told it might be the power supply, replaced that still the same thing. Then I was told it might be the video card replaced that and still no change. Oh and the monitor works just fine unhooked it from the pc and got the no signal thing then hooked it up to my laptop and it worked just fine. Any clue what the problem could be??

Answer:monitor goes into standby right when i push the power button on the pc

Are you using onboard graphics or external video card, if your using an external card, make sure the mobo is set to boot off of pci-e or agp or pci whichever slot your graphics card is placed in.
If not and your using onboard, make sure to have it switch to internal graphics.

Have a 5 y.o. local built white box tower that I'm happy with. Recently unplugged for ten days while on vacation. Came back and first had a hard time getting the back switch to power up, then had to use front switch reset button several times to get the entire unit to power up.

Since then when I power down or unplug, it's very unreliable about powering back up on either switch. I can tell that sometimes the power is getting through due to the light on my router and other times it's not. Even if it is getting through then the front switch may have to be reset several times to actually boot.

Also, after powering down at night via "shut down" on screen or using the front switch (Windows XP Home), then sometimes I can see the DVDRW trying to power up, or see the HD trying to power up - over and over and over.

the receipt describes the case only as ATX4252PCT and the PSU as 340W PS for P4 w/UL.

I've installed one PSU (PC power and cooling dell silencer 470) on a Dell and confident I can do this one. I've never replaced a front switch and don't know anything about this one other than it appears to be integrated with the case.

Need to blow the dust out of the unit but otherwise don't know what else to do. 'fraid to shut down too many more times.

So, do you think it's the PSU or the front switch or both that have a problem? Could I have killed some 5 y.o. backup battery by unplugging for 10 days? Is it a... Read more

Answer:Power supply or front push button switch?

Replace the power supply with one 350 Watts or greater... of quality, as well as the CMOS battery.
The replacement CMOS battery is only $3.50 at Wal-Mart, and it has been enough time for that to be bad.
Switches rarely to very rarely go bad.
On a computer with that many hours, it could also be the hard drive, but the symptoms are more likely the power supply.

Greetings all,

This is my first post. Let me try to explain this as much as possible. I've been having this problem of when I first start up my computer the fans start spinning but the computer seems to start and then shut off like it has a short. Almost like a wire is loose touching and then not touching. Once it goes thru this for a few minutes then it will fire up all the way and run fine. I've gone back into my case and made sure that all cables were securely connected. Removed and reseated the memory in different slots as well as the video card. I'm thinking about removing the cpu and making sure that the pins are fully connected too.

Could this be a sign a my power supply about to go bad? What are your thoughts on this? Thanks for listening.

Answer:When I push the power button my computer doesn't start up all the way.

Hi everyone, I have an HP pavillion 6330 It was working fine. I tried to put a another motherboard that was used. I used the same HDD, Floppy drive, cd rom, and the same power supply. Then, when i turned on the computer with the used motherboard it didn't work with that motherboard because the computer didn't even start up and it just didn't boot and the monitor started to go into standby. Seeing this problem happen with this motherboard i put the original motherboard of my hp pavillion 6330. Now when i turned on my hp pavillion 6330 the monitor goes into standby mode immediatly after i press the power button on my computer. I don't know if the problem is in the power supply, hard disk or a connection of the cables. If anyone can help me... I would appreciate.

Thank you.

Hello Major Geeks,

My first post here in these forums... Ok, down to business... I have a 5 year old Dell Dimension 2400 running Windows XP. It has been working great, but about 2 weeks ago I found that it would not power up and stay on until the 2nd or 3rd time I pushed the "on" button. This happened once or twice over a few days then things went back to normal - when I pushed the "on" button it would power up normally.

Then this morning I actually had to push the "on" button 5 or 6 times to get the machine to come and and stay powered up... The first four or five times it would begin to power up (I could hear the fan come on as well as some other "normal" start up noises) for a few seconds then it powered down again. I would wait 5 - 10 seconds then push the "on" button again... after the 5th or 6th attempt it powered up normally and has been running fine ever since...

I have been searching for an answer for a few hours now, but have not be able to find another similar situation... So, I am turning to you folks - any thoughts, ideas, suggestions, requests for more info... ever heard of anything similar happening? I am guessing that the issue may be with the PSU, but am really not sure...

Thanks

Answer:Must push the power button 4-5 times to start powering up...

:wave Welcome to Major Geeks! :major

Having to push the power button 4-5 times before the PC stays on is a bad thing. A very bad thing. Personally, I would leave the PC off and unplugged. Try a different power supply. If you have a friend or know a 'techy-type' person with an extra, maybe you can borrow one for a day or a couple hours. When you hook up the power supply, be sure that nothing is plugged in to the old (possibly faulty) power supply. If the PC powers on and stays on, great- you're done. If not, then the problem is likely the motherboard. Look very carefully at the capacitors on the motherboard....

Normal healthy capacitors look like this:

Leaking/popped capacitors look like this:

Sometimes bad capacitors won't actually have the crud leaking out the top as in the pics above, but if the top of the capacitor is not PERFECTLY flat, then it is failing. Even a very, very slight 'popped' top is bad news. However, even if all the capacitors look OK, there's still a chance the motherboard is failing, and unless you have access to a bunch of replacement components for testing purposes (like extra CPU, extra RAM, extra hard drive, etc), then you're pretty limited as to what you can diagnose yourself. You can also check the CPU fan; if it's loaded with crud and/or not spinning free and easy, that may be the reason for the shut-downs....

This means the push button found on most current Desktop PCs. The link I shall give is beery s confusing.  Let me explain. Soothing has happened to the way electrical switches work mechanically. In early years most electrical and electronic things would work with a simple on/off switch. Up is on, down is off. Or left and right. Either way, the switch was in one physical state or the other for the duration of a period of time. Then came push button switches.. Push once, it goes on and the button reverts to idle state, but the device stays on. Push again, the device goes off ant the button goes back to the idle population again. Now lets say one m blind man wanted d to make sure a light switch is off. If it was a push-on push-off thing, that man would not know. Or be right halt the time.A similar problem and happen with a computer. The monitor may already be off, but the computer t is still running. When the background noise is high you would not know it is running. So does one hit the button once and see if it turns on the monitor? If it does,  one should  hit it again to shut the PC down. Some have hoped they could go back to the standard switch for a personal computer. Two reasons.1. Some military switches look real cool for a DIY PC. Great for a gamer!2. With a standard switch, off is off and on is on.  With that there is no guess work. Now here is the link where one use posted his problem and never got a really good answer. But the photos ware nice. So recently my computer for work got knocked over. When I push the power on button, the computer starts to get going and makes a series of 3 clicks. Before the monitor even turns on, the computer just shuts off. I am guessing something got damaged when it got knocked over. I was hoping someone would have a rough idea.

Answer:Computer clicks when I push the power button then wont turn on

rough idea:
open it up and make sure all the cables are secure and nothing metal has been knocked around..if still no dice, then start by disconnecting each device (i would check the hard drive(s) 1st, as they are probably most prone to damage) 1 by 1 until you have eliminated all that you could, besides the power plug to the motherboard .
i would start with also checking to make sure the cpu fan didnt fall off.

An orange light still flickers down the bottem when I push the on button.

So is this a computer problem or a power cord problem?

Answer:Satellite M110 - Orange light flickers when I push the power button

Hi becks88,

Sounds like a serious hardware problem... Can you start the notebook without AC/DC adaptor or is the adaptor charging the battery?

Try also removing the AC/DC adaptor and battery for one hour at least. After this connect both again and try to start the notebook.

In worst case you need professional help from an authorized service provider? :(

Hi, I bought my Carbon Touch looking forward to activating with Verizon and replacing my current 3g ipad.  After hours trying to figure out how to enable broadband, I find out that apparently the "touch" models don't offer it.  Can someone at Lenovo explain how they can have promotional materials like the page at http://www.lenovo.com/products/us/laptop/thinkpad/x-series/x1-carbon-touch/ that says "ThinkPad X1 Carbon Touch" and "Embedded 3G Connectivity" while not offering it at all? Then, I thought I'd return the Touch and get the regular Carbon, but I'm seeing now that, despite all of the reviews and promo materials that say otherwise, it doesn't support Verizon either.  How can this be true?  Just about every review that I read about these laptops is flat wrong on these topics.  What's the scoop? I tried calling technical support a couple of times and they were of no help.

Answer:X1 Carbon Touch WWAN (Carbon does not support Verizon and Carbon Touch has no 3G at all)

jprny,

Welcome to the Support Forums! I can definitely understand your confusion and I know you must be frustrated. I can clarify that the WWAN is optional in the X1 Carbon, from the same link you provided you can open the ThinkPad X1 Carbon Touch Ultrabook Specs it states there is Optional 3G WWAN.

Here is the the X1 Carbon Personal Systems Reference (You will find the X1 Carbon Touch on the very bottom)
This shows the different models of the X1 Carbon and what specifications are included. Unfortunately, I only see AT&T as the 3G provider on the standard models. From the Parts List it looks like there are other options to choose from that would make it a configured to order machine. You may want to contact Verizon to see if any of the WWAN cards work with their network.

I would recommend contacting the after sales team:

Hi guys, I'm having some issues with my 2nd gen Lenovo X1 Carbon Touch. The device is still under warranty and I've had Lenovo try to diagnose and fix the problem, but I'm at a point where I'm not sure what the next step is. Here's the problem: Almost every time I commute to work (NYC, lots of walking) with my laptop in my bag. it won't turn on the next time I try to use it. It won't turn on or resume from sleep on battery, nor on power. Alternatively, if I leave the device on my desk at work, it resumes from sleep perfectly every time. When I travel with the laptop, the only way to get it to turn back on is to remove the screws on the back, remove the back cover, disconnect the battery and reconnect the battery. Once I do this, it always starts up and runs flawlessly. I've already had Lenovo replace both the battery and the motherboard. The issue still occurs. I've searched the forums, but haven't found a similar issue. I'm wondering if something is loose in the laptop, causing this situation after I walk around with the laptop. I also wonder if there is something in my bag causing a static / magnetic change that is affecting the device's ability to startup / resume. I'd love your help with this, as it is terribly frustrating! Thanks so much. --Jon

It takes 2 to 40 minutes from hitting the power button until the Bios screen (Lenovo logo) shows up. Otherwise I have to send it back for repair. I can't wait 40 minutes just for booting my computer. Thanks! swawa

Hi, I recently purchased a Thinkpad X1 Carbon (Model number: 20A7CTO1WW - 2nd Gen ?) and have been using it happily for some time. However, the screen now only gives me a mouse, the function keys seem to react, but I don't get any windows screen or any reaction. I also don't know how to reboot, as the machine does not seem to react to either a control-alt-delete or to a 5 second push on the on/off button (it remains in some sort of sleep-mode), as after powering up, I get the same result (movable mouse, but nothing else). With the HDMI connection I can project the same image on my TV screen, but no other results. Also, the touch screen seems to react as mouspointer disappears as I touch the screen. Now I've read in another article that I should push the reset button, but I can't seem to locate this on my model. The pictures in the related article don't match and the only thing resembling a reset button hole is smaller than the thickness of a paperclip. Any help is appreciated as my daughter needs this computer for her exams next week. I'm very disappointed with the Belgian tech support service. There is a classical (LENGTHY) button choice sequence that sometimes disconnects you, sometimes refers you to a number that is no longer in service, and sometimes to a number that only works weekdays 9-6. (No chance of a transfer, you have to physically re-dial each time) I have purchased 3 year on site support and accidental damage cover but these people seem to be... Read more

Hey,
For the past couple of days i noticed that my lumia 720 would lock, unlock and bring the power off slider on its own. Initially i chose to ignore it. But today its gotten so chronic that my phone has been rendered useless. It would also power on, on its own inspite of me turning it off. Sometime back i noticed that my power button has gotten sensitive to touch. it would lock, unlock without me pressing the button. instead this would happen by a mere touch of the button. now i dont know why this is happening all of a sudden. plz i need help urgently.
tks

Answer:Extremely weird problem on my lumia 720. Power button works on touch and not just by pressing

Since I faced a similar problem with a Lumia 710 in the past, I think that the issue is quite likely the power button itself. It's probably due to the wear and tear of the connections of the button to the main circuit board.
I recommend getting it checked at the nearest Nokia care centre. They should do it for free, if your phone is still under warranty.

my ideapad s510p shows power in power button after system has shut downed, screen turns black but power button still showing power. I want to hold my power button for some seconds to make it off.problem does not persist always but most times its like tat. any answer for this prob?

Answer:power button still shows power after system shut down in ideapads510p

I have been having this same problem. I called Lenovo using the number in the documents supplied with the computer. The representative recommended the following procedure:unplug the power cord if attachedremove the batterywith the battery still out and the cord still unattached, press and hold the power button for 30 seconds or morereplace the batterypress the power button to restart the computerafter this restart has completed, manually restart the computer from the screen (which should be working properly now)This has worked for me the two times I encountered the problem you describe.  This has been an intermittent problem for me. I would like to get a permanent fix for the problem though. If anyone has a permanent fix for the problem, please let me know.  I hope this helps out!

Hi all. I recently purchased a Carbon X1 from an auction that had no hdd. I purchased a suitable hdd for it from ebay and installed it, and it passes all checks. Memory passes all checks as well (8gb). So now I have an X1 with all the parts in place and am trying to install Windows 8 from a bootable usb stick but it won't recognise it. I have trawled through the bios options and cannot see anything amiss there. From what I can tell, the USB stick is not receiving power. This is from the usb 2 and 3 ports, on AC and battery power. If I plug in one of our usb sticks that has a light, it lights blue for a brief moment (like a tenth of a second) and goes out. This is in both ports. I have another working Carbon X1 (second one is for my partner - she liked mine a lot) and the usb stick lights constant when plugged into this one. Is there anything I can check, or diagnostics I can run from bios? I am a bit stuck if USB is not working. Is it repairable? The brief light of the usb stick would indicate there's something going on there. Any help hugely appreciated. Thanks.

Answer:Carbon X1 - Can't boot from USB, no power throughput?

Update - I took the hdd out of the working X1, put the new hdd in to this one and booted from the usb, then installed Windows 8.1. Then I put the freshly installed 8.1 hdd into the new X1, and it booted ok and now the USB ports work ok as well, so now I have two working X1s. From this I am guessing that the usb drivers are not in the bios?

Answer:help with on/off push in button wires

You could solder it.Any contact switch will work fine, even shorting the wires with a screwdriver or something else conductive is OK.Or, salvage an on/off switch, or a case, from another computer.Hope this helps.

Please , I need some direction on how to proceed.

My system was freezing right after startup. I had it looked at and the tech gave me some lame excuse about not being able to get parts. So I sent the graphics card(ATI radeon X800XL) to Sapphire for service. The card was returned, I reinstalled it and same problem. So, I sent the Motherboard(GA-K8NF-9) back to gigabyte. Reassembled the system and now when I push the start button I get a momentary flash of the indicator lights and that is all. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I've been looking for a small, easily pocketable charger. Often the space occupied is mostly by the power cords, so I've been considering wall chargers where the brick directly plugs into the wall, such as the Targus APM69US - but I can't find any that have the new rectangular Lenovo tips. Any suggestions? Thanks!

I was considering getting this laptop , probably leaning toward the touch version.  But display quality is really important to me, I do much software evelopment so i stare at thescreen a lot of course  I know this is not IPS panel, but more like the TN panel used in MacBook.   How does it compare to Macbook dispay (non retina). is it, worse, the same, or better?

Answer:Display quality of X1 carbon / X1 carbon touch

I haven't spent much time on a newer MBP, but it's very equivalent to a MBP a few generations back, but is brighter. It's for sure usable, and while IPS would be prefered, I can easily live with it daily.

Hi, I have the Lenovo X1 Carbon Touch, new as of april 2014, and since last week, the touch screen has stopped responding to touch inputs. Before this it has been working and behaving perfectly. I have tried to turn the laptop entirely off and on, reboots... No effect. The screen simply acts like it never was touch. The HID driver is present and claims to be working. I tried to reinstall it and it does so with no errors or warnings. I also tried to reinstall the monitor and graphics card drivers. The Tablet control panel icon offers a calibrate option but Reset is disabled. The calibrate doesn't help because it doesn't respond to touch. System says it has touch with 10 finger inputs. Windows 8.1 Update 1, Enterprise SKU Any advice is welcome. UPDATE! Touch works when I lay the screen out flat. But if I return it to any angle, it stops working. Is this related to LayFlat mode or is there a connection fault in the display for touch input so only when I lay it flat it has contact? Software or hardware?

For the past several weeks I've experienced a very annoying problem with my ThinkPad.  Whenever the laptop goes to sleep and resumes the touch screen goes... crazy. It starts registering multiple inputs across the touchscreen and the only thing that seems to resolve the issue is a restart. Sometimes, upon restart, the touch screen works normally, other times it does not work at all.  Has anyone else experienced this issue? I've seen this issue described for other Lenovo models with fixes, but none for my model.  Under the hardware ID in device manager, this monitor is a LEN 40A4.  I'm running Windows 10.  This is my third Thinkpad X1 Carbon, not because I love to upgrade, but because these machines seem to only last one year before something major breaks.

No, it's not. I don't give a hoot about those three letting you offer an extension on their sites. The hurdles are low enough.

And I'm not "getting a button", this is a complete extension that wants access to my browser. Why treat people like 3-yr-olds?

Also, we're talking about a complete newcomer asking up to 1.200 $/yr. for limited usage. I don't know about you, but up 'til now I always thought 1Password was expensive, yet the latter doesn't limit me or store my stuff on unknown servers in the first place.

when I tried to turn my my packard tower on it lights up when on is pressed but goes out again immediately without anything further happening

Answer:the push button lights but goes out again when released

There are numerous possible causes for your situation and it is a process of elimination to work out which. Q? Have you ever opened a computer case? Do you know the basics of computer hardware configuration? Is your machine still covered by warranty?Open the case. With power disconnected, remove and re-seat all power & data cables. Simply unplug and re plug them from motherboard/drives etc one at a time to make sure each is fully seated. This process can also clean any slight corrosion from contacts. Clean out accumulated dust using canned air. Now connect power and try to start up. Any sign of movement from fans?Common cause of this problem is powersupply failure. Do you have access to a spare compatible powersupply of equal or greater capacity? PSUs can suffer partial failure. Motherboard LEDs can still be lit while other parts of PSU have failed. Without a known good powersupply you cannot test the other components to see which if any other things have failed. Your problem may be as simple as a failed CPU fan or a faulty drive up to a failed CPU or motherboard.Goin' Fishin' (Some day)

Hi,
Iv'e just downloaded Windows ten.
Can anyone tell me - What is PBR
I know what it stands for but what is it?

Answer:What is Push Button Reset on Windows 10?

It means that it is really simple to reset your computer to original, as in the just out of the box experience. You go to notification center, All settings, Update and Security, Recovery, and reset this PC (get started). You'll be offered the options of "Keep my files", "Remove everything", or "Restore factory settings" (which will put the original OS back on the PC - Win8.1 on my SP3, for instance).

Hello all,

This really sucks I might have to make this fast. Every now and then my keyboard will get scramble and if I press (example "q" i get a comma or "y" or something like that. If any body might know any solution please e-mail [email protected] with "Your Keyboard Solution" in the subject line. My keyboard is a: "standard 101/102-Key or Microsoft Natural PS/2", compaq model no: KB-0133.

I've tried hijack this 1.98 (have not posted issue to them yet), ad-aware 6.0, spykiller 2004, system mechanic 4, editing the registry myself (file by file ), Registry First Aid, scanned with pandasoftware.com.

VIPost: This all started when I used MyIE2 browser. Used to only pertain to- when I had MyIE2 open for awhile then my keyboard would just start getting scrambled. I'd have to close MyIE2 to make the bug go away, so I could use Word or Notepad. Now it just does this whenever I have any program running. Then I will have to guess which program it is, close it then the keyboard will work again. So please, if any body might know any solution please e-mail [email protected] with "Your Keyboard Solution" in the subject line.

Hi, I just got a new dlink DWA130 wireless USB adapter. I chose the option to connect to the internet manually, and worked, but it keeps asking me to use the "push button method" anyway. Whenever I close the timer box for the PBC method my internet stops working and there are no connections detected. I have a netgear MR814v2 wireless router, and I have no idea where this button dlink is telling me to press is located at. Neither physically nor virtually.

Im not sure if this is enough information... so just ask if you need more. I'd appreciate any answers very much.

Thanks,

Hi guys thanks for taking the time,

First I need to know if its possible - probably is, but may not be the best solution, im open to suggestions.

Book 1: a register with a value in it
a certain cell will identify the job i.e P1010 and another will hold a value.

Book 2: is a central job register

Book 1 is well maintained by employees but book to is often ignored until the end of the job, no good for live tracking and forcasting which leads to all sorts of problems.

So, can i have a macro button "Update" in Book 1 that, when hit, opens Book 2 looks up the job number in the table and pushes the vale to the correct column. And would this be visable to the user - id prefer it wasnt so they didnt interfere.

i know just putting an = in Book 2 would be the easiest way, but there are so many jobs and managers who just wouldnt link them - i already tried to get them to.

I dont really know anything about macros or how to write them, but i am looking to learn.

any constructive thoughts, suggestions etc welcome

thanx

Hey guys, i've been reading up on power issues and people who are having problems with their PCs not turning on, but couldn't find anything that resembled my problem.

When I push the push-button switch, the light comes on, but nothing else happens...no fans, no lights in the back, nothing. I've opened the computer up and visually inspected everything and couldn't seem to find anything unusual. I don't think its the power supply because the light does come on, but nothing else happens. I dont know toooo much about computers, so does anyone have any ideas for me?

Thanks!

Answer:push-button switch turns on, but nothing else

No way to say for certain without changing the hardware around. Could be PSU or motherboard. Might be video card, but less likely.

Disconnect all other hardware except for the motherboard and turn it on. If the symptoms do not change, it's going to be either the motherboard or the PSU.

Next step then would be to put in a known-good PSU and see if that fixes it. If not, it's motherboard.

Does anyone know the following about the 2015 X1 Carbon 2560 x 1440 screen? Does the touchscreen still have the same hazy film that prior generations had?  We have a couple of the older ones at the office and that hazy film makes it very fatiguing to read text.  Does the non-touch have the film?  Is the non-touch clearer and easier to read text on? Are the screens matte or gloss? I know lenovo doesn't recommend removing the film but it appears many people have removed it.  Is there any detriment to removing the film? Thanks in advance.

Answer:X1 Carbon 2015 (Gen 3) touch vs non-touch screen clarity

I have a 2015 X1 Carbon with the 2560x1440. I don't notice any hazy film over the screen (but I have heard that Lenovo coats it with something). It's a glossy screen but probably a bit less glossy than some others I've used. That said, the screen is fairly dim (I think max 270 nits) and I need to leave the brightness nearly all the way up which eats away at battery life. But at that setting, it's terrific for me.

Hi all, I own a Lenovo Flex 10 and due to several circumstances I need to reset the notebook back to factory settings using the recovery partition. In the owners manual as well as in the maintenance manual there is pointed out to press the so-called Push-Button Reset. At the Flex 14 and Flex 15 notebooks it is described as NOVO button. Where is this button located at the Flex 10 notebook?Neither the owners, nor the maintenace manual shows any hints to find this button. Also there is no hint using any key combination (like Fn+F2 to enter the BIOS) to enter the recovery process. I also explored the Lenovo community and knowledgebase and the only thing I found was that misterious Push-Button Reset, where I'm looking for. So the question is how can I start the recovery process?Potentially is there any option in the BIOS? Kind regardsJoerg

I am trying to find code to allow me to move the mouse to the next button on an external program..

(like tab.. but not with sending keys) by telling the mouse to move to the next active button. or simply push the specified active button for me

There is settings in some programs for example audigy 4 sound driver software from creative labs lets your mouse crop to the next button on every page automatically.

simply push the specified active button for me would be much better...( except doing it with specified pixel locations wont help because I need this to work on all resolutions for different computers.

thanks

Answer:Move mouse to active button or push it

Not sure how to do this, but it sounds like a HUGE security risk. I would not want software like this running on my machine!!

Hello:

How can I automate an Excel application whereby I can drag a user defined push-button over a cell and the content of the cell will be modified by the functionality I have defined for the push-button?

My design is to define a push-button to read in the data measured by an automated measurement instrument. I want to be able to drag the push-button over any of the data cells in the spreadsheet and the data will be read from the measurement instrument and populate the cell the push-button is over when I drop the push-button.

I am aware of the ability to drag-and-drop the content of one cell to another but am unaware of the capability of dragging a push-button over a cell.

I am open to changing my design if any one knows of a better method of coying the data associated with a push-button to a user selected cell.

Thank You for your assistance.

would anyone happen to have a picture of the x1 carbon lcd lid thickness next to the carbon touch? maybe lead_org i know you have access to many thinkpads and i am a fan of your flicker thank you for have made such a great resource! looking to do a custom mod where i fit the regular carbon lid on my multi-touch lcd to get the battery indicator lights and also have the red "i" in the thinkpad logo glow with a mutlitouch pannel, but concerned about the depth for the lcd and thickness... anyone have any experience or ever try it? any input would be greatly appreciated.

Answer:X1 carbon lcd lid thickness vs carbon touch

does anyone have a side by side comparison of the lids so i can get an idea if the touch screen has more depth or if its just the rubber border that snaps in around the lid that is thicker? does any IT manage out there have access to snap a pic of a non touch and touch x1 one side by side? im looking to at least get a visual but i only have access to my x1ct... any help would be greatly appreciated.

Does anyone know whether the displays of either the X1 Carbon or X1 Carbon Touch currently available on the Lenovo website are IPS, and if not, what panel type they are? The sales reps have told me conflicting things. On the product configuration screen, the display types are listed as 14.0" Premium HD+ (1600x900) LED Backlit Display, 720p HD Camera, No WWAN and 14.0" MultiTouch Premium HD+ (1600x900) LED Backlit Display, 720p HD Camera. No WWAN respectively. It's my understanding that in the past, the phrase "Premium HD+" has meant IPS. Also, if someone from Lenovo is reading this, could you please ask somebody in engineering who actually knows?

Answer:X1 Carbon / Carbon Touch Panel Currently IPS?

No, it is an outdated low resolution TN panel again with better than Lenovo usual almost zero contrast (below 150:1). Quote from Lenovo shop:Multitouch Premium ? Optimized for Windows 8, 10-finger touch on select ThinkPad models allows for fluid tablet-like interaction. Intuitive navigation enables browsing, scrolling, using apps, even gaming, with a simple swipe of the touchscreen. A capacitive touch panel trigger actions immediately, and the cursors follow your fingers around the screen without any perceptible lag or delays. Review http://www.notebookcheck.net/Review-Lenovo-ThinkPad-X1-Carbon-Touch-Ultrabook.89901.0.htmlLP140WD2 TLE2, TN LED, Contrast: 885:1

I deleted 3) *: Others and merged it with C: because it had no file.
Could anyone tell me what should I do with the no name partitions (all have space used) and where is my recovery drive?
And how to re-create a Recovery partition with enough space?

Sony Vaio pcg-2j3l wont come on do you think it the switch?

Answer:I push turn on button and my Sony Viao model pcg-2j3L

I think you have a pcg-k25, it should be listed on the LCD bezel not the bottom of the computer. Does the power light flash for a half second after you hit the power button? if so then your AC adapter most likely failed, or you broke you DC Jack. If not, then I would purchase a new computer. You got some good years out of it, but it is time for a new one.

My operating system is windows 10 Pro.
After updating the bios my built in speaker and touch-pad three button not working. Can anyone give me suggestion that how to overcome this problem.

Answer:Latitude 6430u Build in speaker not working and touch-pad button not working right button and bottom two button

Hello. Try re-installing the IDT audio driver.
Win10 is not supported by Dell on the Latitude 6430u so install the IDT 1.0.6491.0 driver using compatibility mode.
1. Download and save the audio driver to your desktop or any convenient location on the hard drive.  [There are two "formats" on the driver's page. Scroll down to the 2nd one, named "Hard Drive" format, and download that one, not the 1st one named "Windows Update Package".]2. Double click on the new folder to extract (unzip) the driver files.3. The extractor wizard will create a new folder for the driver files. It will be at "c:\dell\drivers\xxxxxx". Write down the exact location that the wizard creates. 4. If the driver begins to install automatically, halt (cancel) the installation.5. Browse to the driver files on the hard drive (the location you wrote down).6. Find the "setup.exe" file.7. Right click on setup.exe to open the context menu.8. Select the Properties.9. Select the Compatibility tab.10. Check the box "run this program in compatibility mode for"... Win7.
If the speakers still do not work, test them with the ePSA or the PSA audio test.
If the speakers pass the test and still do not work, try an earlier version of the BIOS. You can get links to all 11 versions of the BIOS here.  That page also has all the touchpad drivers.
If doing that does not work, perform a system recovery and return the laptop to the operating system that was ... Read more

My system specs are : a64 venice @ 2.53ghz(230x11) 1.475v, muskin redline 2x1gig @ 460mhz 3-3-2-8/2T, a 6800u, and an antec 480w true power psu. this problem has just arisen yesterday - i pushed the power button, all the fans turned on, and the mobo beeped(not the POST beep, but the turning-on-the-power beep), and that was it. nothing else. when i pressed teh reset button, everything booted perfectly. Asus C.P.R. went into affect and reset the bios, and this only happens when the system won't post from ocing it to high, but it has been at 2.5 for the last month or so, and has been rock solid! Cpu temps never go past 42c. i think that this might be a problem with the video card not booting up. My old system an axp 3200+ on an asus nforce2 ultra 400 and an fx5700 has the same problem, but less common. What can this be? cpu voltage being set to low? maybe setting it to 1.5 wil help? the vdimm was set to 2.7v yesterday, but it just crashed out of the blue, so i set it to 2.6 and everything was fine. windows debugger said that it crashed on ntfs.sys, but that doesn't really mean anything. what can this be? please help.

edit: it passed 3hrs prime95 and 2 passes of memtest86, so i don't think this is cpu or memory.

Answer:Asus A8V won't boot with power button! Please help!

Try another PSU maybe yours is faulty. You said after you pressed the reset button it worked, this could be because the first time you power on computer the PSU isn't Stabilising the voltages quick enough but when you restart it has had time to Stabilise the voltages.

Hi guys, I have to press the power button twice on my X60 to boot up after leaving the laptop off for a couple of hours. The first press, the "Z" light & "Battery" light will stay on and nothing will happened. If I press again for the second time, then only the Windows will boot. The weird thing about this is that it only happens when I leave the laptop switched off for a longer period of time. There is no problem if I shutdown the window and press the power button again. Meaning I only press the power button once to boot up again during the short period of power off. Anyone can shed some light to this problem I'm having? My Laptop Specifications  Thinkpad X60Windows XP SP2   Thanks in advance,  Cheers,

Answer:X60 Have to press power button twice to boot up

Does anyone know how to reset the X60 system motherboard? I've tried the following tricks that I found in this forum but I think it didn't work coz the BIOS date didn't change:- 1) Remove battery pack and disconnect AC adapter, then press the power button for 30 secs. 2) Remove battery pack and disconnect AC adapter, press the power button 10 times and press for 30 secs on the 11th time.   I've troubleshoot of the following but the problem still persist:- 1) Leave the laptop overnite without hooking it to the battery pack and AC adapter. 2) Remove battery pack and Plug in only the AC adapter, then press power button, still no use coz have to press twice again. 2) Downgrade the Windows XP SP3 to Windows XP 2. 3) Remove all recent Windows Updates.  4) Online Update with ThinkVantage Update and the BIOS has been upgraded to 2.18 together with other ThinkVantage softwares/components. 5) Load the BIOS Default settings. 6) Change the Startup Booting Sequence. 7) Run the latest PC Doctor software and passed every test. 8) Remove the hard disk. Problem still continues, have to press the power button twice to get the Thinkvantage screen.   On the first press - All indicators light up and then went off - the "z" light is on and stable- the "battery" light is on and stable (if the battery pack is in place)- the "adapter" light in on and stable (if the AC adapter is in place)- I can hear t... Dell optiplex 755, mini tower . My son pressed power button and computer made an ear-piercing noise and would not boot up. The power light comes on, but no fan, no post, no beep codes. Monitor displays "no signal". Is this a bad power supply? Bad motherboard? Not sure where to start, need HELP!

do you mean a single beep, or multiple beeps? These codes will identify the issue.

Specifically with Dell desktops, you can refer to these beep codes:
1 beep: BIOS ROM corruption or failure
2 beeps: RAM not detected
3 beeps: Motherboard failure
4 beeps: RAM failure
5 beeps: CMOS Battery failure
6 beeps: GPU failure
7 beeps: Bad CPU

Additional Dell error information can be found here.

On my new E530 I've come to realize that I have to press the power button twice for the laptop to boot. At first, I thought I didn't press it hard enough or the timing was off or something, but after extensive testing, I've come to the conclusion that it is indeed mandatory that I press the power button TWICE in order the laptop to boot. My question being, is this normal/by design? Google has given been conflicting and inconclusive answers:http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/T400-T500-and-newer-T-series/Thinkpad-Edge-E420s-start-up-button-issue/t...http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-Edge/Power-button/td-p/307704 Can someone credible chime in here? Much appreciated and thanks in advance!

Hi all!

I have two questions that I should be able to find in the help menu, but haven't and consider this an important enough of a topic that other users may be interested in, if they don't know where to find these system tools.

I'd like to ask where to find the controls for my "Power Button":
such as "when I touch the power button it: turns off, asks me what to do, does nothing."

For example, my Zip drive is close to my power button, with the system tucked nicely -- but inconveniently -- under the desk and in the dark, I often touch the power button. Gosh, that was stupid!

Since I can log off and shut down by ctrl+alt+del, but a frozen computer may not respond to the power button if I chose "do nothing" I may wish to chose "ask me what to do."

Next Question: Where do I find the system temperature of my computer or processor. I want to know if my system is having heat problems. I have a Dell, which I have heard that have terrible cooling designs.

Again, with a little more searching, I may find these answers, but I felt this could be an excellent topic for discussion on what setup works best. Like I've also heard that "System Standby" & "Hibernate" are jokes.

Thank you reading and especially if you reply.

Just ordered new parts:

P67 Intel motherboard
550 GTX EVGA gfx card
3,3 ghz sandy bridge quad proc
2 sticks of 4gb ram ddr3

I just used this case yesterday, so i know the cables are fine. Everything is connected, and when i flip the switch on my power supply a green LED does light up on my motherboard.

If you're directly facing the connectors, you put the Power SW at the bottom left, one over because you dont fill the left side. Above it comes the Reset SW, with the HD to the right of it, and the P-/P+ below it (or to the right of the Power SW).

I dont know if somethings up or im missing something obvious.

Answer:Case power button not turning on system

Don't you have a manual for the motherboard?

I only began experiencing this after updating to the latest Power Manager.  I have it set so that pressing the power button puts the machine into Hibernate.  Instead of doing this, when I press power, it's as if I am hard resetting the laptop.  It begins to reboot and comes up with the "Windows did not shut down correctly" screen and asks me if I want to boot into safe mode. Has anyone else noticed this issue?

Hello,
I have not heard of this specific issue before, but I am wondering if the hibernation file might be corrupt.  Try disabling hibernation, which should remove the file, then enabling it to create a new one.  Does that make any difference?

I have a T43, one day  i cleaned the fan but then found its left button of touch pad and touch point doesn't work  anymore, i tried switching the left and right button funtion on the OS and then the left still doesn't work. Firstly, i think it may because wrong connection, so i detach the cover and reconnect all connectors...but soon find the Wireless Adapter which is fitted under the touch pad doesn't work well...Once i installed the driver for WLAN,  the OS is frozen and even i disabled the WLAN from OS, the OS is still forzen frequently.  Now i have to install a new OS and don't install drivers for WLAN, in addition, The LAN adapter works well.  During the reconnection, i cleaned the gold finger of WLAN using IPA...is it the root cause? wish sb can help me.

Answer:touch pad and touch point left button doesn't work,T43

Cleaning the WLAN shouldn't have caused the problem.  Recently someone posted on this site or thinkpads.com with a similar problem.  Do a search on both sites.

Im having a difficult time deciding whether to get the touchscreen display or the normal display for my x1 3rd gen carbon notebook. Can someone tell me about the pros and cons and your overall experiences with the different displays. Thanks

Answer:X1 carbon 3rd gen, buy touch screen or no touch?

It is a matter of personal preference. I prefer the touch on windows 10 or 8.1. I prefer no-touch on windows 7. Even with a touchscreen. I still use the mouse more often than touch.

Answer:Is it possible to turn off touch on an X1 carbon touch?

Hello auroria, Welcome to the forums! If you are using Windows 8 or 7, you can disable the screen touch functionality by navigating to: Control Panel -> Hardware and Sound -> Pen and Touch. Next, click touch tab and disable "Use your finger as an input". Hope this helps, -Brian Chan

I've had this machine about about a week, so far I really like it.  Can't say yet that I love it yet, but it does what I need it to and the price is better than a tablet with the same functions and already has a keyboard.  This machine is kept in a padded case when not used in my desk drawer it does not bounce around in my briefcase etc.
This morning the left button on the touch pad does not work.  At first glance it sort of looks like it is caught on something or stuck, the right button works great a broken switch under the button is also possible but this thing doesn't move at all I'd think a switch would still move just not contact properly inside.  I need my machine and I've made a couple of upgrades like a SSD for the stock hard drive and a 8 gig ram chip, I am not thrilled about pulling those components in order to return for warranty replacement etc. as I'm pretty sure you won't be returning the same machine I sent in.  I'm considering pulling it apart to see if it is indeed stuck so it can be pushed back out from the inside but if this is a common issue with this machine I'd like to know that...
Can I be sent a new touch pad component, I believe I saw this is a separate board that attaches to the motherboard with a ribbon cable?  I'm not afraid of this procedure myself as I've been building desktops since the 90's and this is a really simple hardware to work on from the looks o... Answer:New week old Inspiron 11 3000 3558 (touch) stuck or broken button on touch pad--warranty parts replacement?

This is an fyi about the final resolution of this issue.  After a lot of arguing dell sent me what was supposed to be the touchpad but what I got was only the plastic palmrest no touchpad. Then because it's a "daughter card" I got more argument about the touchpad.  I got hot enough that I opened up the back, lifted out the battery, took out the two funky looking screws and the whole pad just fell right out of the machine.  The buttons seemed fine so I screwed it back down, put the battery back in and closed it up.  It's now great, the button was indeed hung up on the edge of the plastic palmrest.  This is a very well designed inside machine, it all screws down and all connections are with plugs or ribbon cables.  I wrote back to dell and told them they need to fire their tech manual writers because they're idiots, a monkey could have done this.  Apparently it is not easy to find only the mouse pad it's generally sold with the palmrest from what I can tell.  This whole machine is so well designed I scratch my head why the cpu isn't socketed unless they decided there was no room for a socket etc, which I can see that argument.  So if your mouse pad quits try popping it out first it may just be hung up.

Update: Found the fix was already posted to the forum.  Just had to re-install Natural Touch.  Thanks!  Hello, I lost functionality of the Natural Touch button (the top button above the manual screen rotation button) on the left side of the screen.  I would like to get that button working again. I'm not sure when this happened as I only pressed the button when I initially bought the unit.  However, I think it may have happened after I upgraded from Windows 7 Starter to Windows 7 Professional. Thanks for your help!

Hello, I've been following tutorial here and on Technet since last year when Windows decided to do an auto-update on my old laptop which hastened its demise.

Since then, I've bought a new laptop (Originally with Windows 8.1, until it suffered the Auto-Update fate of it's predecessor), that I've half heartedly made a custom Windows 10 image for, but just wanted to ask here to see if I'm on the right track for what I want do do.

My goal was to replicate the best as I can what the Laptop would have been like, had the OEM originally put Windows 10 Pro on to it, with the correct drivers, and software, but, with a change to hardware configuration to move the 'Users' folder to another Disk, while the OS was installed on another.

I'm getting ready to start my studies again, and wanted to get my laptop running correctly and not have any incidents similar to last year that ended up trashing my assignments.

I've been on the phone to Microsoft already & also had remote support, but I am slowly beginning to lose my trust, if not already, because it took a tech 3 hours to get me a link to a Windows 8.1 ISO that worked, after telling him I didn't want Windows 10 installed on the current laptop he was remotely connected to, and that was after he gave me the link I gave him that didn't work, and also just before he tried to push Windows 10 on to the laptop that I told him I didn't want Windows 10 installed on to, and I also threatened to ask for a refund for the Professional edition I...
