Lenovo support - options for recovering Windows 8 on new X230

Question: Lenovo support - options for recovering Windows 8 on new X230

Hello, I recently purchased x230 with Windows 8.I installed Ubuntu 12.0 (attempting to dual boot). Unfortuantely, Windows 8 is no longer accessible(UEFI error comes up on boot), the restore partition is also corrup ("required partition cannot be found").I attempted to install win 8 PRO that I purchased from scratch. It failes because the Windows 8 key embedded into the EFI doesn't match the new Windows 8 PRO that I have on DVD. I chatted with Lenovo support, asking to purchase restore DVDs for my laptop - I was told that it's not possible (after going thorugh a couple of people and wasting 1.5 hours on chat_ Please provide some support as it is unacceptable that I cannot install clean version of WIndows 8 and the restore disks are not available from Lenovo. Thank You.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Unfortunately, win 8 doesn't support dual boot in native or not tweaked mode.Try this tool:http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/diagnose-and-fix/detail.page?LegacyDocID=LENV-DIAGS#uefi

So I am sitting here on my MacBook Pro which in my opinion does not have any wireless issues whatsoever, it works. I still own this ThinkPad with a garbage wireless card, and I feasted my eyes on an Intel 7260 but lo and behold, it isn't on the whitelist! Scouring eBay and Amazon I did find a FRU, but would the number of that FRU be the same on the Hardware list? Lets see, well I cannot even find it. All I get are Page Not Found errors which to me is a hilarious joke of Lenovo's support. What does this mean for me? Is my X230 at a very very unnecessary end of life? Should I like, fork out Ģ1400 for an "upgraded" model that probably won't fix most of my problems? My problems is money and saving money. Should i now look elsewhere? No, because I'd rather keep my money to actually FIX my current laptop's problems (the N2200 is a garbage card and would like to replace it with something that's up to date to todays technology but that isn't happening by the sounds of it) I am frustrated with my current laptop's problems and it's having a large effect on my studies. And possibly you can also lose customers by inadequate non-existent support and failure to give us the freedom to actually let us upgrade for those who do. For those who don't, more like.

Hi there I posted this on another forum, but thought it might get more of a response on the lenovo forum, so apologies if anyone has read this before.I need a new laptop soon, my T60 is on its last legs, but has lasted a great length of time. I am considering buying either the x220 or the x230, but I live in the UK and the X230 is only available with 2 processor options, the i5 3210 or else the i7. The latter makes it considerably more expensive and probably is too much for what I need. Lenovo is also not letting me upgrade the screen from the default option, as the upgrade is the 3 x 3 antenna (?) so I can't get the webcam.I was originally going to really spec up the 220 and go for that, but I have heard about screen warping problems (my other half has a t400s and has been plagued by the chassis cracking at the palm rests) so I want to avoid that. I know all the other major X220 problems such as throttling have been fixed, one of the benefits of getting a tried and tested machine.I guess my question really is which one should I buy... I am not a gamer, I will be using it for running SPSS, a statistics package; watching movies and streaming etc.Would I be better getting the sale price on the 220 now or do I wait to see if the x230 has more configurations for the uk in the next couple of months? (does lenovo usually increase the options for configuration?) I don't want to lost a good deal on the 220.What do I do? I am very confused! Many thanks for your helpAlison

alisonkay wrote: I was originally going to really spec up the 220 and go for that, but I have heard about screen warping problems I think the X220 and X230 use exactly all the same screen parts, and therefore susceptible to the same problems. I've had my X220 for over a year and haven't had any warping problem.

Hi. I've got an x230 with Windows 10 installed(Build 10240) and have bought a bluetooth bdc (FRU 60Y3305) and installed it into the laptop. Device manager is unable to see the bluetooth chip before or after I've instlled any of the drivers. I have tried a number of different driver packages. Some have come back with windws saying that "Broadcom Bluetooth Software doesn't work on this version of windows" and one that a number of people seem to have got working said that it couldn't detect any Broadcom Bluetooth hardware. I have a feeling that this isnt going to work  but some people on the internet seem to have got it to work!? Has andybody got any info on this? Thanks

I called Lenovo and got my Windows 8 recovery disc shipped out free of charge ten minutes later. I have a case number to prove it! This is so awesome.I didn't say anything except that I didn't know why windows won't start, I didn't know why recovery wont start, and I needed my discs so that I could get things working again. That's the last time I let my mischievious daughter play with my laptop before I get it all set up. Hi all,Apologies if I've missed this elsewhere - new to the forums so still learning to navigate. As background, machine type listed below:X230 Laptop (ThinkPad) - Machine Type 2325, Model BA6As I see it I'm having two separate issues here but they may well be linked: Recent Windows 10 updates are making the taskbar fully ineffective - I note this is fairly common and have tried the powershell route to check updates to no avail; curious to know what the advice here generally is, if X230 is no good with Windows 10 or is there something specific I should be doing to rectify this. This weekend, my laptop has developed a habit whereby the sound and video playback stops working suddenly. On boot-up it's fine but after a while, I can't listen to music or watch videos at all. Bit alarmed about this but suspect it may be linked to the thunderstorm on Thursday (based in London...), given I woke up to realise the powerboard on my TV had also gone. My laptop is within warranty so hopefully if it's hardware related, I would hope this is covered - in truth, I was reassured about the Lenovo warranty but have never had cause to use it at home or work over the last 6 years of using Lenovos.Any help or guidance would be massively appreciated!Kind regards,Bal

Description of problem: at some point when playing audio, sound will cut out. The levels will still be moving on the mixer, but no sound will come through the speakers or sound jack. It seems that soon after I've closed all sound-producing applications, sound returns. I am 50-75% sure that this is strictly a sound jack issue, as I don't remember being able to reproduce the issue without the sound jack being active when the audio drops out. Frequently, bumping my headphones' cord seems to cause the problem, but other times, the problem seems to happen on a click, a loud sound, or seemingly nothing at all.

I am unsure of how to reliably reproduce the problem, so it is difficult to diagnose whether or not the problem can be reproduced when the sound jack is not active. This isn't common use for me...

Origin: Appeared mid-October, around the same time I had upgraded to the newest drivers (where the old ones were from earlier than May 2013). All were downloaded through the Lenovo website and/or Lenovo's System Update utility, with the exception of the Intel graphics drivers, which were downloaded through the Intel website. At this point, I was running Windows 8, not Windows 8.1. I installed Windows 8.1 recently, and the problem remains.

What I've tried: disabling drivers, reinstalling drivers, disabling sound effects, disabling audio application overrides...

What I haven't tried: rolling back drivers (being honest, I have a bit of trouble believing that this is strictly ... Read more

Does Microsoft have any form of paid support for Windows 8.1 Enterprise that does not involve "software assurance" licenses or paying $499 per ticket?   Microsoft used to have a way to buy an email-support-only incident for $95 that was fine
for some cases.  I don't see that option <g class="gr_ gr_162 gr-alert gr_spell gr_run_anim ContextualSpelling" data-gr-id="162" id="162">any more</g>.
I have tried to get support on problems through Technet before, but the quality of support here has been extremely poor.

@Lead was kind enough to point out the Ultrabase as an option for docking the X230. I was using an extra 433830U mini-dock I bought for my W520. I suppose the new 433815U with USB 3.0 might be a good choice with the X230. I'm able to drive two external monitors off the mini-dock. It appears to me that the Ultrabase has but one Displayport connector. Does anyone have a recommendation of one over the other (Ultrabase vs. mini-dock)?

Question: X230 WWAN Options

Hi, I did some searches and couldn't really find what I was looking for.  I also used the chat function and got useless responses.  I am simply looking for a WWAN modem that I can install into my laptop that supports t-mobile USA. Thanks for your responses.

Answer:X230 WWAN Options

Sierra Wireless mc8355 (Gobi 3000) supports almost any network and carrier around the world. But if you'd like to get the higher speed of wwan connection (more then DL 14,4 mbit/s it provides) you should purchase Sony Ericsson h5321w or f5521gw. In this case you can't connect to CDMA/EV-DO network if you'll decide to do it in the future. Note that modem must be with Lenovo FRU.For the future: for UMTS network (T-Mobile is that) do not use Lenovo Mobile Broadband Activation application.

Question: X230 Power Options

However I try to change the Power Options/Manager the unit just sleeps/hibernates after about 60 secs after which it needs the password to reopen.    No alternative shut down options have any effect.  Is there some conflict with Windows 8/ 64 currently installed?  Thanks for any clues.   Just a bit frustrating.

Answer:X230 Power Options

Perhaps pick a standard Windows Power Plan (I use Balanced) and then set the options with Windows Power Management. I set it Sleep Never on AC, Sleep after 20 minutes on Battery, and never Hibernate. It does what I tell it to do. Windows 8 Pro 64-bit. If you continue to have issues, uninstall Lenovo Power Management via Control Panel. Make sure all Lenovo drivers are up to date before doing this. Updates have occurred as recently as May 20 (4 days ago). .... JDH

Is there a way to specify different actions for the pen buttons?  For example, when using one specific program, I'd like the side button to function as if it were the shift key instead of the right-click but then have it operate as the standard right-click when in Windows or other programs. Is this a native functionality or is there a third-party program available that could give me such options?

Answer:X230 Tablet Pen Options

aardvarky, This is an excellent question! I definitely understand your wants! Officially, it needs to be a setting inside the software you want to use the digitizer pen in.

Examples:

With the new TBT2 there is a software called QuickSnip, insdie the QuickSnip settings you can change the digitizer pen button from right click to screen capture.

Inside OneNote you can change the settings of the Pen Buttons, here is a link to a X230T Digitizer Pen Input Youtube video that may have more clairification.

So, as Digitizer Pen Technology becomes more popular, I believe we will begin seeing more Applications and Software adding the technology to enhance their user customizations.

Hello,

It has been some time since I have been to sevenforums. I have missed you guys!

I was here almost every hour on the hour back when I built my PC and was installing windows7 for the first time. Now I have a new laptop and I would like some expert advice!

I bought a new, to me, Lenovo X230 Thinkpad recently and it came with windows7 installed. I am a person who enjoys simplicity, uncluttered space, and efficiency. In my desktop, and overall in my OS. Are there any tips, or guidelines for trimming down many of the programs and extraneous applications that come along with nearly every manufacturers' computers today? Should I reinstall a clean version of windows7? Is that possible with only the recovery partition on the laptop?

For example, I don't need 2 battery power applications. Either disable or remove the windows battery manager, or the Lenovo. Things like that.

I would also like to remove and backup the recovery partition from the laptop, but it doesn't have an optical drive. Then I could have more space, and only one partition. Not sure the best way to go about this. I have an external drive that I can backup the partition to.

If you want any more information about the current state of the laptop, just ask! I enjoy conversing and learning from the good people here.

Thanks again guys... glad to be back!

X230 Laptop, 8GB RAM, Intel Graphics 4000 series, SS180GB SSD. Problem occurs with laptop in the Ultra Base Series 3 dock or out of it. - VGA or DisplayPort. Laptop came with Windows 7, was upgraded to Windows 8 and then Windows 8.1 and then the 8.1 update. Problem started when Windows 8.1 was initially installed.

When connected to an external Monitor (HP ZR2240W or a Dell 2412Mb) with either display port or VGA (VGA on Dell only), Windows Explorer will stop working, open programs will show not responding. Mouse still functional, and if cursor is placed in the "taskbar" area, you will get a blue spinning circle. A double click of the mouse in that area will generally cause a relaunch of Windows Explorer (screen area goes blue, then repopulates with the icons) and things will work fine for a number of program launchs or switching between programs, then the problem will occur again. This will happen up to 20+ times per day.

Laptop has the latest BIOS installed from Lenovo, Intel Graphics Driver 10.18.10.3621. Have tried three different keyboard and mouse options (Microsoft wireless keyboard and mouse, Logitech wireless keyboard and mouse, and a hard wired keyboard and mouse) and problem follows each. Friday I reloaded Windows 8.1 with the most recent updates and problem continues.

Windows 8 does not play nice with older hardware, especially older Intel hardware. You did not post if you are using the 32-bit or 64-bit version of Windows 8.1. Intel does have updated drivers for that GPU. https://downloadcenter.intel.com/Sea...01&FamilyId=39

Try the latest drivers and see if that works. As for changing the motherboard. You would not be able to do so with a Laptop. Since they are specific to the case.

As title, after I updated the  newest lenovo app (windows 8.1). My mute button doesn't work now. Even I try to reinstall the power mangment driver. Does anybody know how to solve the issue? Thanks!

Answer:x230 mute button doesn't work after updating the newest lenovo app (windows 8.1)

Hi Whhsu,

Welcome to Lenovo Community!

As per your query we understood that you are facing the issue with mute button on ThinkPad X230.

The normal procedure for updating the system to Windows 8.1 is that when you are in Windows 8 you have to update all the drivers first and then you have to update Windows 8.1.

To resolve the issue now please download Hotkey feature application from Lenovo support site and install it.

Below is the link to enter the downloads page and download latest application accordingly, please click on "Select Product" then in "QUICK PATH" enter the MTM no. select the exact model.

Hello! I recently ran into a ton of problems with my Ideapad that involved failure to install Ubuntu. Long story short, I had no way of booting into Windows (even after a ton of troubleshooting on the Ubuntu forums), so I decided to reinstall Windows on my laptop. I had previously made a system backup image on Windows, so I figured I'd simply recover from that backup and be on my merry way. However, for whatever reason, I ran into an issue while reinstalling Windows related to my partitions. I was anxious to get Windows working, so I hastily deleted all of the partitions, since I was starting fresh and no longer needed them. This worked. I was able to install Windows again, and I'm not on Windows. However, I cannot recover my backup. I'm getting the following error message when I attempt to recover:  "The Windows Complete PC Restore operation failed.Error details: The disk that is set as active in BIOS is too small to recover the original system disk. Replace the disk with a larger one and retry the restore operation. (0x80042407)" This is strange. I'm using the same disk. How can it be too small? Well I recently came across this thread: http://forum.notebookreview.com/ideapad-essential/690046-lenovo-y580-clean-install-guide.html It appears that I may have done the one thing it says not to do: I think i deleted the One Key Recovery partition... Is this possible? Could this be the reason why Windows won't accept the backup imag... Read more

I've been on the phone to Lenovo support for the last 6 weeks, they have been absolutely unhelpful, and I don't know where to turn! My brand new (1 month old) X230 decided to BSOD, and I couldn't boot (even in safe mode). I'm not a big techie, so after trying to boot from a USB and not getting that to work I rang support. That was at the end of October. Since then i've been told twice that a box has been sent to return the computer in (10 days apart after ringing to find out when the box was coming), then told they didn't send due to "an error in our system" (again, after I rung), then i was told that a technician would come to look at my machine, then after hearing nothing for another week, I was told that customer support would contact me to find a solution, and now i've been calling every 3-4 days, everytime told that customer support would contact me or someone would "personally take care of this issue".  I haven't had a single piece of correspondence from a Lenovo employee in all this time. I'm ridiculously frustrated! the most expensive thing I've ever owned and its worthless after a month and the support staff are absolutely taking the piss. I spend my evenings on hold at the support centre! I took the PC into a local shop ($100 later), and they think its a failed SSD which is the problem. What should i do? Hi guys. Can i install a wwan module on x230 Type: 2325-Q34, i mean dose it have the antenas and things ?If yes what wwan module should i for european carriers. And maybe a guide on howto install the wwan module. If not thank you.

Answer:X230 2325-Q34 WWAN Support

HiUnfortunately, I couldn't find official confirmation your laptop is "wwan ready", i.e.has wwan antennas installed. Antennas kit FRU in your laptop is 04W1409, wlan and wwan kit. Nevertheless, laptop might have or not have wwan part of them. So, to ensure, it'd be faster to disassemble keyboard and check out whether wwan antennas are there, red and blue wires.x230 compatible (Lenovo approved) wwan modules are:- Sony Ericsson h5321gw (I'd advice to not get that)- Sierra Wireless mc8355 (Gobi 3000), for 3g networks- Sierra Wireless mc7710, 3g+LTENote, the cards should be with Lenovo p/n (FRU).

Only the MC 7700 and MC7750 are supported for the X220 at this time for the US 4G market.  I'd guess that support for other versions in future will depend on the size of the potential 4G LTE markets.
At this stage of global 4G LTE deployment, support for a particular implementations is generally somewhat more than just having support for specific bands, so there is no gurantee that a MC7710 would actually work with your 4G carrier(s) in Hong Kong.

For instance, 4G LTE in the 700Mz band (where most of the global 4G action is eventually likely  to settle once analogue TV is switched off) will be in different segements of the 700MHz band is differing regions of the world.

Hi everyone, As I see the problem of laptops bricked after bios upgrade is relatively common for Lenovo. Still I've had the same problem - after installing all updates with ThinkVantage System Update (I just selected all the updates) the x230 wouldn't start. It still has active warranty till 2015, but the official Lenovo support here in Russia says this is not covered by the warranty and I should pay for motherboard replacement! And they only give answers on the phone, no e-mail or any other written answers are given as this is "confidential" I'm a bit confused, as this looks very strange: you buy a laptop for $2.5k and at any time Lenovo can brick it with its own updates and refuse to repair it (official price for the motherboard is above $1k). I see it as a direct message "Don't buy any Lenovo products". Anyone had similar problems with support? Did you have a free repair? If this is not covered by the warranty, can anyone point out where this is written as I coudn't find anything in the warranty that prevents Lenovo from repair. Thanks in advance. Edited:Here are further details in case anyone closer to Lenovo support reads this.Right after the incident I searched lenovo.com for authorised service centers and went to Auroville (www.aypo.ru) in Saint-Petersburg. They took the laptop and called me back in several days. They said that Lenovo refused to accept this as warranty so they can't do anything. Also they said that the reason for this was that t... First boot out of box "a problem for this error could not be found. Lenovo is constanly updating drivers...". Second boot, blue screen of death (dump message). Windows updates fail. Keeps installing updates and reverting changes due to failure. Lenovo updates not installing properly either. After install, updates keep showing available and reinstall. Thinkvantage system update freezes on 21%. Wifi keeps going to no signal. This computer is like a sick joke, the support has been even worse. They want to charge me for software support. There was some issue with WiFi certification in Indonesia.  The BIOS change isn't about adding new cards, it was just adding new Indonesia-only versions of the existing cards (6200 and 6205).  7260 is still not allowed in X230T.  Sorry to disappoint you.

My X239 is not charing to the full 100%, I have two other Thinkpad models that my parents and they all change to 100%.. This is newer than theirs. Also the power button on the laptop is not flexing enough, you wont fee if you are pressing it. I send this for repair twice and its not fixed yet.I wonder the support tech read the whole desciption of the trouble or just goes by the category of the trouble. I like to talk to someone to make sence but its all automated. I am so much dissatisfied with their service and the product itself.

Answer:support issue with X230 problem charing and power button stuck.

Hi,

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

I?m sorry to hear that battery of your Lenovo ThinkPad X230 is not charging to 100% and the power button is stuck.

I would suggest you to follow the below troubleshooting steps.

Shutdown, unplug AC and remove battery. Press and hold power button for several seconds. Then re-install battery and AC and restart and see.
Download latest Power Manager and Power Management driver.
Uninstall Power Manager and Power Management driver that is already installed.
Reboot the laptop
Install Power Manager and Power Management driver
Reboot laptop again and see if helps.

Go to Power manager -> Battery tab in advanced view -> Battery maintenance -> Select always fully charge ->Ok and restart the system.

Ensure that the system is plugged-in and that battery firmware is up-to-date.  Check the Lenovo support site for any battery firmware updates for your particular model.  Perform battery gauge reset.  This will allow the battery to relearn available capacity. Update BIOS to the latest level.

Regarding the power button, you may have to disassemble the system and reseat the button. Refer hardware maintenance manual to perform disassembly of the system. Otherwise, you may have to report the issue to Lenovo technical support again. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Please post back with the results!

Best regards,
Mithun.

Backstory: I finally got around to performing some updates on my X230 that I usually keep on internal LAN running machines.  It has Win 7 Pro SP1 installed and I checked the update for KB2459268 through Lenovo's recommended software update at the time and thought nothing of it when everything installed and updated properly.  Restarting my machine and RDP to a host and everything worked as normal.  Then putting the X230 to sleep and.... the screen went off like normal, the power button did the usual beating light like normal, but the computer did not sleep!  It kept running and worst yet, did not respond whatsoever to ANY keyboard input, ctrl alt del, esc, power button, nothing!!!  I finally had to force shutdown and figured, probably a glitch.  Did the same process again and yep, it seemed to sleep.  Woke it up, tried it again, and sure enough, same issue (no sleep and no response). I kept getting the same issue for the next week so finally I did a clean install with Win 7 SP1 on a wiped drive, ran the lenovo software update with the KB checked, and tried it again.  SAME ISSUE!!!!  Now I was sure it wasnt a driver issue, and probably not hardware (I guess it could be).  So I uninstalled the KB from programs and features yesterday and the 4x times I used it, no issue.  Leads me to think there is something going on with the KB. How to replicate:Install KB.  Log into an RDP server using the X230.  Issue s... The KB2459268 is Microsoft hotfix (not a regular important update) A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing the problem described in this article. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix. Uninstall it. It is 5 years old so it might be already resolved by a regular update. Do not install everything Lenovo offers, select individual updates only.

So, here's what happened: I left my laptop for a while and when the battery drained, it shut off. The next time I turned it on, the Lenovo logo was there but windows was not booting leaving me with a black screen. I've been trying to get into the Boot options to fix the problem but no matter how many times I press F8 it's not working. Is there a specific time to press F8? For how long do I have to keep pressing it? And every time I repeatedly press F8, there's an annoying beeping sound. Is that normal?

Answer:Cannot enter Windows Advance Boot Options; Lenovo G550, Windows 7

hello recharge. in Your case the beeping is a good sign. yes there's too many ways to interrupt normal startup. the old access ibm button, the think button, the one key recovery button (the arc-ing backward arrow on Your G550,) machine specific has been numerous combinations; try these for lenovo = F11 key or enter key. read about your one touch key. Seems more likely you are looking for what the F2 or F1 key will do prior to post. but why so hasty to get into advanced configuration? recovery? if it is a power up delay? Charge it up. if stuck hold the power button down for four seconds to terminate all. Charge up. remove ac and battery + depress power button four seconds. Charge. should be normal. probably back on before i could write this. hoping. Tell forum the circumstances and specifics of your machine to aid response in forum.

My Z210 came with stripped RAID-0 array which is currently made up of 2x 1TB HDD where the OS partition lives. I want to change this to mirrored RAID-1 but since the IRST application does not allow RAID level migration of this type, I thought I?d try another approach.

As a solution, I'd make a backup, using the Windows Backup and Restore application. Then I'd change the array using the iRST Boot ROM before recovering the backup to this new array. But obviously a 1.9TB backup into a 932GB array does not go

So, in preparation for making a backup, I first disabled "System protection" and the "Page file". Doing this allowed me to shrink the OS partition to around 50GB using Disk Management. Then I re-enable "System protection" and the "Page file" before making the backup and creating a System Recovery Disk. This resulted in a 35GB backup which I stored on an external USB drive. And now a 35GB backup can fit on my reconfigured 932GB RAID-1 mirror

As such, I cold booted my system and during the start process I pressed CTRL-I to get into the Intel RAID Boot ROM. Mind you, CTRL-I only worked if I cold booted and directly plugged the HP USB keyboard into the first USB slot on the rear of the system. The first USB slot is at the upper left when looking at the rear with the tower upright. Plugging the HP USB keyboard into any other USB port or into the hub of my Dell monitor didn't allow me to access the Intel RAID Boot ROM!

Hi. I have a Lenovo P50 that after doing recent Windows 10 updates, it now is not booting properly. When it boots, it brings me to a boot menu that is completely empty. It does not detect the hard drives, any external usb/hard drives, external DVD, etc. from the boot menu. If I run a diagnostics, that detects the drives for example, and all results come back fine.  If I try to go in to the BIOS and edit anything in the boot order, that too shows nothing. Also, the network boot option shows nothing.  I cannot figure out why there are no boot options appearing and why I also cannot even boot of a USB if I wanted to.

I bought TPS230U in may2013, and one monthe ago, the laptop just turned off by itself and wont turn on anymore. I had tried troubleshoop refresh and resetting options but it doesnt work.
My warranty certificate is still valid for itnernational support (now I live in  Brazil), so that, I called Brazilīs support (My laptop ID is: Type 3347 2GU S/N xxxxxxx 13/02.
At the first time I contacted by phone, the attendant asked me to (once again) turn off the laptop  and call back again. Well, I did it, adn (of course) it didnt work. So I called once again. The second the new clerk said I should buy a cd or dvd ( which could not be via USB stick ) , download from other computer and copy  an image file  that lenovo would understand the problem . I explained that I had not cd to record that moment. But he was very rude, and told me that it the  support goes to my house and concludes that there is a software problem and not hardwa, I was supposed to pay for the visit. So, I went to a store and bought a recordable CD , recorded the ISO file and got home to insert it into the laptop and....for my surprise,  my laptop doenst have any  entry for CD ! I feel that lenovo has been really disrespectfull with me and all I want is to have a simple support to my laptop, but I still couldnt have. Pleaase let me know how can I solve this problem before my waranty term expires!!!

Hi, This is my current configuration. I bought this Laptop in Aug 2008.
LENOVO X61 3GB RAM INTEL CORE 2 DUO 2.10 GHZ

My Graphics card details are below
Chip Type - Mobile Intel(R) 965 Express Chipset Family
DAC Type - Internal
Memory Size - 384 MB
BIOS info - Intel Video BIOS

I bought the Windows 7 Professional Upgrade and was running the Windows upgrade Advisor. It says your current graphics adapter wont support Windows Aero user interface. If you want to experience the benefits of Aero contact your PC Manufacturer or retailer to see if Upgrade is available.

I've attached the graphics properties as a image.

What should i do here ? I understand just 128 MB is more than enough for Aero. I dont why im getting this problem ?

Should i go ahead and clean install Windows 7 and is there is updated driver for this ?

Please assist.

Answer:Windows Aero Support on Lenovo X61

Hello Kary10 ... Welcome to the forums..

in order to run aero you need to meet the following requirements:

Minimum Hardware Requirements for running Windows 7 Aero:
# 1 GHz 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor
# 1 GB of RAM
# 128 MB graphics card

Aero also requires a DirectX 9 class graphics processor that supports a Windows Display Driver Model Driver, Pixel Shader 2.0 in hardware, and 32 bits per pixel.

Hi atmyhome1995 ,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

As per Lenovo tested list G475 is not supported .
There maybe features that may be limited in terms of functionality.
As such you may still install Windows 8 and try to find probable workarounds if available.

Before deciding on the upgrade , best to always back up files first and recreate your recovery media .

Hi All! I'm sorry to sound like a bit of a newb here, but i'm looking for a little bit of assistance with my x230 laptop.  I bought the laptop back in september with windows 7 professional.  A couple months later, I upgraded to windows 8 only to not really like it too much and decide for now I want to revert back to Windows 7.  Not knowing what my options were, I installed Windows 7 Ultimate back on the machine through an external cd drive, but now I'm missing about 100gb from my main drive, I ordered a 500gb 7200 rpm drive but now I only have about 350 GB available after the clean install.  I wasn't too sure how the recovery options on the x230 worked.  I see that next to my main C drive, there is another drive there located "Recovery" It has about 75% of the disk space being taken up but there is absolutely nothing within the actual drive when I actually click it.  It's probably too late, but is there any way to actually take my laptop back to the way it was when I first bought it? I only ask because it seems there's something on that recovery drive but I just can't figure out what it is.  I would appreciate any help at all, I'm sorry for sounding like such a newb with this stuff!

Answer:Lenovo x230 Recovery

Hi, Flyerfan16

If you are viewing your drives in Disk Management, how big is the Recovery partition? The partitions from Lenovo are normally between 7 GB and 10 GB when the machine ships. If the original partition is still on the drive, then you should be able to recover to the settings when the machine was first purchased.

You can attempt recovery by starting the machine as normal and then pressing Enter repeatedly to interrupt startup. A menu should then appear, with an option available to recover your system. Press the associated key for this action and then follow the prompts. If all works well, you should be able to go back to the way it was. If you choose this option, make sure to back up all files that you wish to keep that are currently on the system.

Hope it helps,
Adam

I would wan to find out if I can install  mSATA SSD 128gb into the x230 and main harddrive as a storage?

Solved!

Go to Solution.

Answer:Lenovo Think Pad x230 and mSATA SSD

Hi, odessit

This should be possible. There is a slot for an mSATA drive in the X230, as shown here. Also shown in that link is that an mSATA is a user-replaceable part. After purchasing your SSD, then all you will need to do is install it per the instructions here (pp. 70) Also, you will likely need to download this firmware update after installing the drive. This will allow the BIOS to recognize the SSD if you plan to use it as the C: drive of the system. The update can be found here.

Hope it helps,
Adam

Question: Lenovo X230 setup

Hi, everyone,A quick question. I have an x230 on the way and am looking to set up my workspace in a specific way. Here is what I want: an external monitor that will allow me to move the cursor from the laptop screen to the other monitor. So, in essence, a dual monitor set-up but with the laptop screen as one of the monitors. I would also like to be able to use a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse while in this set-up. Do I need the UltraSeries 3 dock, or something else? Thanks!Parker

Answer:Lenovo X230 setup

Hi, Parker

You should be able to accomplish this without a docking station. The X230 supports a dual independent display and has a VGA port and a Mini DisplayPort. So if you have a monitor with one of these connections and hook it up to your laptop, then it should work. You will need to make sure that you Extend the display and not Duplicate it. Duplicate will give you the same image on both screens. You can just use Win + P to set it appropriately.

As for the Bluetooth keyboard and mouse, you should have no issues here either. Provided Bluetooth is turned on in the system and you have compatible Bluetooth peripherals, it should work like a charm once they've been paired.

Hope it helps,
Adam

Hello,So, first of all, I'm not english, so I'm sorry for the following mistakes.Let's start.1 year ago I've bought a lenovo x230 netbook with Windows 8, intel core i7 + 8 gb ram + SSD. [still using these specs]Okay. After 1 month of usage, the display started to have some problems. From the left to right, the 3/7 part of the display is changing in all the colors while using. It depends on what color is the page opened. If it's white, this part of the display is black with some "running" white lines, if it's blue - red and so on.No problem ; acording to the warranty, the display has been changed. It was ok.Since august 2014 I didn't use the laptop again. I started using it in April 2015. In may, the display started to have that problem again, but I've read on your forum that I need to put the display on 60Hz and on High performance mode to fix it, and that's what I did. At the beggining of June, the problem was back, and it is still on 60Hz and high performance mode.3 days ago, my laptop started to make another problem ; CHARGING.It doesn't want to charge.  If I just plug in, it stays with the battery on 0%, and it doesn't open because of the missing electricity, but I've realised something. If I move the end of the charger [near the part which get into that yellow circle where the end of the charger must be, hope you understand] higher than 10-15 CMs it DOES charge. But now it doesn't charge even if I put it in the position I've said before.  Just did shut down on my lenovo x230. When restarting the PC by pressing the power button, he looks like he is restarting, then nothing happens. Hardware buttons not active, screen is black. Nothing I can do... PC doesn't react to anything. Was working fine before shut down. What is wrong??? What can I do? Help!

Answer:lenovo x230 - Does not boot!!!

fre_madrid,1. unplug power cable and battery, press and hold the power button during 30 sec, plug the battery and cable again, try to boot laptop.2. OR if you are familiar with disassembling of keyboard and palmrest do it, then unplug connector of small yellow battery under palmrest (near FPR) during several minuts. Assemble the laptop and try to boot. If laptop will boot go to BIOS setup, press F9 and save default settings, set and save your settings. If that actions will not resolve the issue I'm afraid you have to contact with Lenovo support.

Dear all, I jsut got a x240 and really liked the QuickConnect app from Lenovo, which works great for my job (I can use my Android phone as a remote presenter, keyboard, etc.). I was wondering if I can install quick connect in my x230. I know that Lenovo says it's only for the x240, but since it connects via Bluetooth, I don't see why it wouldn't work with the X230. Doe anyone have any experience with this? Thank you. R.

Why wont lenovo work to make drivers for window 10 for its entire line. This is just poor customer service, We have 2 other laptops in the family that did not originally come with 10 but have been able to switch over to 10 with minimal problems( just going to the manufactures website and getting correct drivers) Lenovo does not seem to care about the customer once they have made the purchase. They sell us a product with windows on it and if you are using auto update it automatically would upgrade you to win 10, I was able to make my laptop work fine with windows 10 initially but this last build it will not work. Lenovo has been zero help, just endless conversations on the phone and being transfered from one person to the next. Why cant they just have an option to email someone about these driver problems or just admit they will not release/updated drivers for 10 and make and official statement that 10 will not be supported ever on older models I thinks the customer service is pathetic and now know why apple has such big market share.

I have made numerous phone calls to Virginmedia since November trying to get wifi set up they finally told me last week that they do NOT support windows 8 and if I want to use wifi I should go back to my old computer; I immediately gave notice to leave. so I want a new network that will support windows 8 and help me to set it up straight away, but I need to know independently that the network will support windows 8 and are reputable

Answer:New computer Lenovo Windows 8. virgin said they do NOT support it

Hi there what exactly is the issue you are having? Windows 8 PC's and laptops run with no problem on the Virginmedia network.
What I think the tech support meant when they said they don't support Win8 is that they haven't yet got the training inplace for their support staff to be able to help with Win8 issues, same thing happened when Vista and Win 7 first came out, Virgin (along with most other ISP's) only have the training inplace for the previous operating system it can take them anything up to 6 months to add support for new operating systems.
Are you trying to connect the Superhub (ok it's not so super)or are you using one of the older virgin cable modems.
What issue are you having with setting up the Wi-Fi connection?

Hi guys, I've spent the last several hours downgrading a Lenovo G700 to Windows 7 (to provide support for old business software). Once I got past the BIOS stuff, it's actually been a very smooth process and I've got all drivers installed, everything seems to be running smoothly except for one thing, Hotkeys. I can't see any software available in the Lenovo Support section for Hotkeys on this machine.  I tried downloading one for another machine but predictably, it refused to install. Does anyone have any ideas?  To be honest, the biggest irritation is just the screen brightness, if we could get back control of that, we'd be very happy  Andy

Warranty service replaced BIOS on my Lenovo Ideapad Yoga 3 laptop (service order #7024609337). As a result OS was downgraded from Windows 10 to Windows 8.1. I have contacted Lenovo multiple times: Within same email thread about the warranty support and through official service request web form. NO REACTION! Not a single reply! Except ofcaurse request fill in a form and evaluate the service. Is this Lenovo strategy to wait for warranty to expire and leave buyer with broken Lenovo Ideapad Yoga 3 laptop and old OS?

My Yoga 13 does not run very well on Win 8.1. The response time is laggy, I've had a few hard freezes, and it is overall not as fluid and nice as it was on Windows 8. Looking at the official product pages for the Yoga and the new Yoga 2 Pro, something very unsettling appeared: no Windows 8.1 support! http://shop.lenovo.com/us/en/laptops/ideapad/yoga/#compare Is lenovo seriously not going to support the Yoga 11 and Yoga 13 with Windows 8.1?

Answer:Yoga 13 - No Official Windows 8.1 Support from Lenovo

I had the same experience after updating to 8.1. So I tried several different things including a clean install of 8.1 with the same experience. I restored back to 8.0 and won't even think of 8.1 until I see some sort of support from Lenovo.

Dear support, My Thinkpad X230 (NZD78MH 12.5", 3520M, 180GB, W7) recently started to frequently overheat. It happens during rather normal operation, such as browsing the internet or playing video on youtube. This causes the fan to run on maximum capacity and computer processes to slow down significantly.  As the image shows below, taken after playing a random youtube video, temperatures of ~103°C are typical.  Should I have it serviced? Please help. Best regards, Matthias

I've bought the Lenovo X230 with the broken battery (the PM showes 68% charging and no more, asks for the battery replacement). I've tried 3 different good-working batteries from X220 which were supposed to work on X230, but they don't. When starting the laptop with that battery, it stops with the information:" The battery installesd is not supported by this system and will not charge. Please replace the battery with the correct Lenovo battery for this system. Press the ESC to continue".  And after pressing the ESC key, it starts to work, but the PM still writes that the battery is not correct and it doesn't charge. What could it be?

Answer:Lenovo x230 battery problem

Hi,x230 doesn't support the batteries of old 29 series (x220 did). Only hw protected batteries 44 series are being supported by x230 (and 19+ series, external).Batteries of 29 series can only be discharged in x230.Try to perform the original (x230's) battery reset using Lenovo power manager feature.

Realized I posted this in the wrong place and it really belongs here I decided to look around to make sure my computer was even able to run an external GPU and found I have hit a wall. I flashed my BIOS to the newest version (like 2.67 or something?) but my TOLUD is 3.5 GB (dfa00000). I thought the BIOS update was supposed to fix this? I only have 8GB of RAM so the 16GB problem shouldn't affect me either? Anyone know what might be wrong? When reading some forums I saw that people who updated their BIOS were able to fix their problem as long as they only had 8 gigs of ram, which is why im confused I still have DFA00000. Will it still work regaurdless of this? I thought the update was supposed to fix this.

I have a Lenovo x230 laptop with an i7 processor that starts the second time. This means that when you first turn on, there is a black screen. The restart must be forced and then normally turns on. I tried to use an external screen, tricks with disconnecting the battery and pressing the switch, CMOS battery, RAM memory replacement - nothing did not succeed. On this motherboard, the service replaced the BIOS chips due to failure in the upgrade. They said that the computer would not work anyway. The computer, however, works, but after the second launch - which is annoying. I have updated the BIOS on my own, which did not solve the problem. Once the computer starts, it works very steadily and without problems. I have not found a similar case anywhere on the internet.

Hey everyone!I ordered a x230 a few weeks ago and i realized i need bluetooth! I know i can purchase a dongle for a few dollars but i rather keep my USB ports free.Anyone know where I can purchase a bluetooth card so i can install it myself? - Or is it advised not to do that. What do you think I should do?

Answer:Lenovo x230 missing bluetooth!

2 options come to my mind1) you can look for bluetooth expresscard (x220 has a slot, so I'm guessing x230 has it as well)2) you can put it in mini-PCIe slot (for the WWAN card or mSATA SSD), assuming it's empty now, ie. you purchased without WWAN

Solved!

Answer:Lenovo X230 FingerPrint Error

If you re-installed Windows and this problem still happens, I'd say there's a strong possibility that your fingerprint sensor has failed and needs to be replaced.  Even if the device looks OK in Device Manager, this really doesn't mean much.  All it means is that Windows can talk to the USB device that hosts the fingerprint sensor, but the fingerprint sensor itself could still be malfunctioning.

Some things that can help confirm hardware problem:
1.  Shut the system off, does fingerprint green LED flash slowly?  If so it means that the sensor contains some fingerprint templates so lets try to clear them.
2.  Turn the system on and press F1 to enter BIOS setup
3.  Go to the Security menu and choose Fingerprint, then clear the fingerprint sensor.  You should see a message about success or failure.  Failure definitely means HW problem.
4.  If you see a message about success clearing the fingerprint sensor from BIOS, then shut the system off again.  The green LED should not be flashing anymore because you cleared the sensor in BIOS.  If the green LED still flashes, then it means HW problem because the fingerprint templates were not really cleared.

So try the above steps to try to confirm the HW problem, or just call service in your country and request help.

I have a Lenovo ThinkPad X230 (which I love dearly) and have a few question about ports and booting.  I would first like to verify that the port on the left side of the laptop directly above one of the USB ports is indeed an ExpressCard 54.  I have searched the web, but have yet to find a definite answer, and my user manual simply stated "ExpressCard."  Furthermore, I would like to know if it is possible to boot an operating system from said port using an ExpressCard 34 SSD (64GB).  I have the intention of installing openSUSE 12.3 to the potential SSD and be able to boot from it.  I greatly appreciate any help.  I  would post an image of said port, but I am being told the image file is much too large.

Answer:Don't update to Windows 8.1 you will void your warranty -- says Lenovo Support

I think there is something wrong with the entry specifically in "Problem Category". It should be "Windows Installation and Update" not "Windows Installation and Upgrade". There is a big difference between the two words update and upgrade. If you upgrade or downgrade I think you void the warrantee but if you update you will not. Microsoft has always provide automatic update to its OS and programs every month and I don't think this will void the warrantee.

Hello, I've upgraded my W520 to Windows 8, and from other threads, I'm understanding that the metro app "Lenovo Settings" will be used instead of the previous Windows 7 power management utility, and it will also take the place of some additonal Lenovo utilities existed for Windows 7 but do not for Windows 8.  When are those who have upgraded to Windows 8 going to be able to access this metro app on the Windows store as I'm not seeing it currently? I'm currently experiencing an issue with power management as follows:- Set a screen saver to come on at 1 min for reproducing this issue in Windows 8- In Win-8 power management, set "Choose when to turn off the display" to any time other than never- Enter ctrl-alt-del followed by lock to go to a lock screen After 1 min when the screen-saver tries to start from the lock screen, the display (external or the W520 laptop display) shuts off.  The time set in "Choose when to turn off the display" is not being honored at all.  Also this occurs with any Windows 8 power plan, and I've installed the Lenovo Windows 8 power management driver, latest BIOS with Win-8 support, and the latest Lenovo dependency package.  Is anyone else seeing this same behavior?  Just FYI, if you are at the desktop (not the lockscreen), then this issue doesn't occur and the screen-saver does come up if a time is set in "Choose when to turn off the display". Also, how are you supposed to monitor the CPU temp and fan speed ... I was installing the Windows 10 Creator Update (see reddit.com/r/windows) using the official ISO file as well as the Media Creating Tool downloaded from Microsoft website, but then it failed with error code 0xC1900101-0x20017 with a message :"The installation failed in the SAFE_OS phase with an error during BOOT operation". The update stuck at the booting splash screen, no hard disk activity, nothing moves. Tried a few times and tried different ways to install it, but nothing worked. I have enough space to install the update and the machine is having Ubuntu 16.04 as well as a recovery software on the system alongside Windows 10. No idea what is wrong. I was suspect BIOS or drivers for this issue. Does anyone encounter this problem?

My Y400 laptop can no longer even get past the "lenovo" screen at startup. No loading circle at the bottom, no start screen, no options to access the BIOS or recovery options, nothing. Tried the normal power button, tried the Novo/OneKey button on the side. Same result. The only thing I can seem to do is CTRL+ALT+DEL, which just causes the screen to turn off for two seconds before turning back on with the same "lenovo" screen. I can also use the Fn+Space function to change the backlit keyboard lighting and Fn+F2 to turn the display on and off. Otherwise, I can't seem to do anything else. This is not a hard drive failure, as I duplicated the same result with another drive and did not get the "Windows not detected" or such and such screen for the other drive. Please reply as soon as possible with help. Thank you kindly.

**bleep**. nearly the same money as my few month old w520. **bleep**. (Similar W520 config with one or two more items added, no RAID. 2382.30 in February. Heh I could have waited if I knew about the W530. Bad luck timing).

I have a Lenovo X230, running Kubuntu 14.04. When I disconnect the slice battery at the bottom the system resets, it's very annoying. What's worse is that it seems like jostling the system, also can cause it to power cycle. I don't really have a need to remove the slice battery very often, but essentially if I put the laptop into standby, and put it in by laptop knapsack, the system is off after I get where I'm going. Thoughts? I saw somewhere that allegedly, when you unlock the battery, some thinkpad utility gets notified to switch the power, I wonder if the hotplug is a software only solution, and not doable in standby. Steve Ramage

I have a 4 year old Lenovo Thinkpad X230 computer.  Since I upgraded to Windows 10 (two years ago?) my computer has randomly shut off with no warning.  There doesn't seem to be a pattern with regard to when or how this happens.  The computer starts normally every time.  This can happen upwards of 5 or 6 times in an hour (although sometimes it can go several days without shutting off). In the last year (since June 2016), the computer has been evaluated by three different technicians on three different occasions (June, October, January).  Each found no hardware issues, no issues with fuzz/dust, no obvious software issues, no malware or other viruses.  Personally, I have explored the answer on the internet and fiddled with the settings relating to sleep mode (among other suggestions) and nothing seems to have worked.  I recently was advised to revert to the original windows 10, undoing all the updates and additional installations that I've put on the computer.  I did this, and miraculously it helped (although it still shut off twice since then.  This was in February).  In the last two weeks, I was forced to upgrade back to normal and the problem has returned.  Additionally, the first person who looked at my computer (back in June 2016), told me that this was aparently a common problem with Windows 10 and that the only way to fix it was to revert to Windows 8.   I would like to not have to do this, if poss... Hello all, I have serious network configuration issue (including both, WiFi and Ethernet). When I enter IPv4 configuration, next time I open again the configuration page, the settings are put into automatic mode (so no pre-entered IPs there). But ipconfig shows the entered IPs. Some times ipconfig also show 3 or 4 different gateways, but opening the Network adapters configuration page, all is set to automatic, so I put it into manual mode, then again to automatic mode and disable + enable adapter, then it'll go to dhcp. This issue is really annoying, I had it before the clean install, it worked some time after reinstall, but now the issue came back again. Using Windows 8.1 ProAll drivers are up-to-date. Any help is really, really appriciated,Thanks in advance,Kunnar
