I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi there,

My partner Tracys HP DV6 laptop is refusing to boot. The machine appears to power up as normal, the power, volume and wifi lights above the keyboard light up as does the 'on' light at the front left corner and the fan can be heard running but the screen remains blank with no flickers of anything and no sign of even a cursor. The caps lock/num lock* lights repeatedly give two blinks in time with each other.

* I say num lock light. I think this is what it's normally referred to although num lock is not the nearest button. It's at the top right hand corner of the screen next to the 'End/page up' buttons.
After a bit of googling I have tried doing the hard reset (switch off, remove battery and power cable, leave for 30s then hold down power button for 1 min before rebooting). I also tried connecting an external monitor via the vga socket and to a TV set via the HDMI output. None of these approaches have yielded any results. My googling has also revealed the two blinks from caps lock/num lock are the code for a BIOS corruption fault.

I found instructions for restoring the BIOS here...

http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c02693833

I was going to follow the instructions there but wanted to check here first in case there was a more appropriate course of action I should take first.
Another thing is that there seems to be a lot of heat being blown out by the fan considering the machine appears not to be booting.
I'm no computer expert but a... Read more

If you are using Windows 8, then it is important to note that the on-screen indicators for Num Lock and Caps Lock are not available in Windows 8. To know more about this, you can refer to the link below:http://acer.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/30035/~/no-num-lock-and-caps-lock-indicator If you are using Windows 7, you can check if following the steps below helps:1. Click on "Start".2. Type keyboard in the "Search" field.3. Double-click "Keyboard options".4. Go to "Key settings" tab and then, go to "Key settings" list.5. Locate and double-click "Caps Lock" and select the option "Display Caps Lock status on screen". Click "Finish".6. Follow Step 5 for Nums Lock as well. Hope this will resolve your issue.

I just got my new T440s system and when I turn on/off the Fn lock, or mute/unmute speaker or microphones, a small black box always appear on the screen to show me the state of these functions. It will disappear after several seconds. But I want to know how to make it not appear because there are already LEDs on the keyboard to show me the real time state of these three functions. (I still want to keep the Caps Lock icon) As I remember, after I powered on the system in the frist time and finished the Initial settings, a setting window showed to ask me if I need these icons appear or not and seems I can also decide the appearing location of these icons. But I cannot find it again! If someone knows how to disable it, please give me a feeback. Thanks in advance!

I am ordering another cpu for 16.00 off ebay because this is cheaper opposed to ordering another board. Anyone else have this issue? And if so did you fix it ?

Hi Issue: Thinkpad X1 Carbon 5th Gen black screen / 'screen off' on resume from sleep I know this issue has been posted about several times regarding the X1 series but .... none of those threads seem to have any kind of answer to this problem. This seems like quite a horrendous issue for a +1500 to have !! Constantly 'hard rebooting' and losing all my open work is seriously seriously annoying. Please note: My drivers are 100% up to date based on Lenovo's own update software. I have all official Windows 10 updates issued to date (21 aug 17). These are the patterns I've noticed: - It doesn't always replicate the same behaviour: after resume from sleep sometimes it's 'black' and other times it's fine. I'd say 66% of the 'lid openings' it's OK but 33% of cases it's not.- I've found that if I shut the lid again and reopen (often 3 or more times and waiting 30+ seconds on each open then 30+ seconds on each close) then I can eventually 'force' it to turn the screen on.- If I 'manually' set the unit to sleep from the start menu rather than just closing the lid, I'm pretty certain that it *does not* exhibit this problem. I'll be 100% certain once I've tried this a few more times.-  I've removed all USB devices from the laptop one-by-one and waited for the problem to reoccur thus ruling out any single or combination of USB devices.- I have the 'lock screen' shown when it does successfully resume from sleep. - The screen 'blackness' looks t... It is an X1 carbon without the touch screen running windows 8.1 and is 10 months since I registered it.3 days I go as I was leaving to come home from overseas  I turned it off and it asked me if I wanted to update and shutdown.I pressed yes.( I cant remember it asking that before)After getting home yesterday I tried to turn it on.It wil start up ,go to the lock screen and accept my fingerprint. Then the screen goes black and nothing else. There is a small light flashing erratically next to the blue tooth light, looks like a cylinder with an arrow through it.Hard drive light?I have tried turning it off completly by pushing the switch in the hole on the back with a pin.I have also tried to use the recovery option but it says it is still locked. All my pics are saved to the cloud so I am not too worried about losing anything.

Hi,

I'm on RTM win 10 pro on my Dell 7720 laptop. Have 2 queries:

1). I've changed the font size to 150% which is fine on the desktop. But I need only the lock screen/Welcome screen to be 100% font size since on 150 % the font is too big and ugly. So is there any way to change only the lock/welcome screen to 100% font size again?

2). I'm experiencing fuzzy/blurry font and icons for some of the applications. For example: Dell touchpad circular scrolling icon is fuzzy, while on 8.1 it was fine. Even the text in Device manager is fuzzy, while on the properties window of this PC it is fine. See below:-

When 4th gen tries to go to sleep, the power light stays green, along with other lights like mic and mute. Display stays black and keyboard/input is locked up until I hard turn off the laptop by holding power button down (black screen hang). I think it started after the firmware for intel management engine was updated to 11.0.18.1002 but I can't downgrade it now. I tried uninstalling and downgrading drivers, but doesn't work. What eventually kind of works (for now, at least), is to downgrade the bios to 1.19 here: https://download.lenovo.com/pccbbs/mobiles/n1fuj13w.exe What's also weird is that the intel ME firmware was supposed to fix these symptoms but instead caused them for me (I believe);<11.0.18.1002>(N1CRG38W)

I have bought an carbon copy, but friend fetched it , luckily i still have my ea account with cd key, anyways so thanks to legit cd key, my game is legit...
Okay so heres the problem: When i start carbon, the screen goes black for a second and game crashes back to desktop, no crash report. Iv tried updating the game to 1.4, still having same problem. Tried to run in win98 compatibility mode, didnt work. I had an different mobo before, game worked perfectly during that time, i had x200 too... Game should run fine on x3100 , as there are plenty of youtube videos which show that it runs great on it. (Well not great but it works)
System specs are:
Intel Celeron 336 2.8ghz clocked at 3.16, stable temp, just cleaned and viewed temp from asus pcprobe.
1GB kingston ddr2, 800mhz
GMA x3100 up to date drivers, checked from website
ASUS P5KP-L AM/PS
Integrated sound, realtek.

Answer:NFS Carbon crash to desktop, black screen.

A crash to the desktop is often related to a video driver or video compatibility problem.
You might want to check out > Can You Run It?.
It might give an explanation as to why this game won't run properly on your computer.

Hello. I am trying to fix an HP G62-367DX Notebook PC.
Operating sys: Win 7, 64bit, AMD Turion(tm) 530II Dual-Core Processor, 4GB, 2.50GHz. I had this laptop since December of 2010 and on June of 2013 is when I used my notebook PC and was initially of no use. I have been working on my laptop on and off since. I am not afraid to open the sucker up and get this thing up and running.

The problem started out with what most ppl call it, the "blue screen of death". Like most ppl, I did ignore the blue screen and did a restart which brought me to the normal Windows screen and then it would start back up just fine. I found this in Device Manager's (Hidden Files):
Non-Plug and Play Drivers
-! ehdrv
-! epfwwfp
-! Security Processor Loader Driver
I am not sure if it has anything to do with what it was the blue screen situation, but I tried searching on the net on what it all meant and to see if I was able to fix it, but before I was able to do something about it, the blue screen kept popping up and it was getting worse.

The problem progressed to where on Windows startup it would just stop there, blue screen would pop up and of course I had to restart it and do an F8 key press for Safe Mode. I had to work on Safe Mode for a good couple of weeks before I can figure out the problem/s. I believe I had went into the system and found out it had something to do with some kind of error... *sigh* I did write it down, but that was like a month ago and I am unable to locate my ... Does anyone know how to change the size of the notification icons shown on the lock screen?
I seem to remember getting the question during setup of Win10 if I wanted to show large or small icons and I think I choose small. When I restart the computer I can see the network and power icons in a good size but after logging in my account preferences change the size to small and although I can see them on the lock screen, they are so small that one can hardly see what application shows them.
Have looked in the registry on
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\SystemProtectedUserData
and there is a sub-folder called ScaleFactors that might be the place, but I have no knowledge of how to interpret the reg binary.
Any help would be appreciated

On the X1 carbon, i7 - I am having a few challenges, not sure if they are related, but I do see this WAN miniport yellow error. I am not bothered by the error popping up - but here are the challenges. 1. USB is not responsive. Using win8, and when I plug in apple devices, they do not pull up, despite a complete shut-down and start up. The USB on one side sometimes will work while the other doesn't seem to often. 2. When opening the lid to pull the computer back to wake, the screen stays black. I purchased the X1 Carbon new last year from Lenovo's website, with the largest warranty possible. Lately, the screen started turning off at completely randomly intervals, not dependant to the programs I have runnning (at least it doesn't seem to be). The screen will briefly turn blue, and then go black. I can immediatly resume normal function by touching the mouse or keyboard, but still, I would prefer this expensive laptop would not have the issue. My battery settings have been checked and the screen is set to turn off the display, "never." This an issue I should resolve via the warranty? I have no idea.

Hi was wondering if others experience this. Trying to figure out the cause and if there is a fix.

When I turn on or restart my computer after the teal windows logo with the spinning wheel the screen will flash off quickly then come back on black and then 10 seconds later show the lock screen.

It's kind of annoying to have this delay happening and wondering if it's normal or something that can be fixed.

Answer:Black Screen after teal windows before lock screen

Hi BFG,

That sounds normal to me. The only variation might be "how long" you pause on the black screen (while your boot is being processed). Now, for some, that black screen might flash for only a few seconds but for others, it could last quite some time. My advice is to do nothing and live with it.

I upgraded from Windows 7 to Windows 8 Pro. Everytime or almost everytime I click on an app or go to the desktop and try to get on IE 10 (desktop version), my screen flashes and goes black for a few seconds then returns me to the screen with the space needle, then I click on it and it signs me back in. When I try to use Google Chrome, the websites freeze up on me. I don't want to have to reinstall/reformat as I paid $40 for this for one, and secondly, I don't want to have to repurchase Office 2010 as my licenses ran out. Please help. I ran every update that comes up and restart, but this doesn't change this issue. I'm hoping there will be a patch or service pack or some update that will fix this. Any ideas why it does this and any way to fix it without reformatting?

Answer:Windows 8 Pro, screen goes black and back to lock screen

I had the same problem at first. Then one day the listing of all my apps disappeared. I did a refresh and lost a lot of programs but the files were still there. Then I noticed that the problem with the apps had fixed itself and they worked. My feeling is that the initial install wasn't complete and the refresh completed the install. Recently, after loading my Epson printer's CD, the apps once again disappeared. Had to do a system restore. Now I am having trouble with my screen just being black and not coming on at all...even after a reboot. Win8 has a lot of problems.

I have recently had some troubles with my PC, after my old Chaintech 6600gt died I installed a 7800GS OC from BFG and after it was working for a few days my computer has now been frequently going to a black screen, coming back for a second, and locking up and going back to a black screen. I have defragged, error checked, tried different drivers, and ran registry cleaning utilities.

I do not have an onboard graphics card so I cannot test it with that.

Any support or ideas on a solution would be much appreciated.

Answer:XP Pro lock ups and screen going black

I honestly think it is an overheating issue atm, using speedfan I noticed 2 of my fans are running only at 670RPM and the other is at 800RPM. I Opened up the case and have a fan blowing on it and it seems to be better now.

Hi all,I recently restored my X1 Carbon (4th Gen, type 20FB, Windows 10 home) to factory setting. After the resetting I found that the brightness control didn't work and I could not adjust brightness, so I went to update the Intel HD Graphics 520 driver, and black screen occured right after the update was installed. Now I'm using my laptop with the graphics driver disabled, and I still can't adjust brightness. Any thoughts? Any engineer plz check it!

When I leave my computer for say, 20 minutes or so, it doesn't go to sleep (as it normally should with inactivity) but it is still running (I can hear the fan hard at work) but I can't seem to "wake" it back up. The screen is black and the laptop is unresponsive to clicks on the touchpad or closing and opening the laptop. I have to hold the power button down for ~20 seconds before it shuts down and then I have to turn it back on and re-open all my applications and windows to keep working. This has been happening since I first got the laptop (August 2014). I've talked to Tech Support many many times. Nothing seems to work. They replaced my motherboard -- but that doesn't seem to solve the problem. Is it just my laptop or has this happened to anyone else's?? Help!!

Answer:X1 Carbon doesn't go to sleep, keeps running with black screen - unresponsive

I have the same problem. Have you found a resolution yet? I just disabled hibernation, as I remember having a similar issue with a computer years ago and that was the solution then, hopefully it will work, but I'm still searching for something to give me a definitive answer.

When I turn on my Lenovo X1 Carbon 3 if it is unplugged, it will load normally to the lock screen and then the screen just turn black, the power button will flash on and off green, and nothing will happen even if I try to turn the power on.  If the laptop is plugged in, it will work normally and if unplugged after I log into the computer it works normally too.

Answer:Lenovo X1 Carbon 3 screen turns black if turned on unplugged

This happens to me whether plugged or unplugged and I leave it sitting for a while. It seems to go into a super deep hibernation that refuses to wake up with the blinking green LED.So I actually have to HOLD the power button down for ~5 seconds, and restart the computer. I don't know if there is a solution but it might have to do with the power settings in Windows. The odd thing is that might not be true because I run Ubuntu as well and have the same issue so those Windows Power rules don't apply! Also, my firmware is the latest.

Hello everyone, I have a user who's X1 Carbon goes blank when not being used and the machine will not turn on. Instead the screen will remain black and he has to restart the machine in order to resume using the machine. The power button is a solid green when the machine is in this black screen state.  Any suggestions on resolving this? Thanks

Last night there was an update from Windows that I didn't request and when it was completed there was a message on my screen that everything was the same as it had been before. The message stayed there so I assumed it was still doing something, so I left it and went to bed. This  morning it wasn't acting normal, so I ran a scan to make sure everything was ok. It said it was. About 10 minutes later the screen went black. It's still on because I can hear when emails come in, but there's nothing on the screen. I've done control/alt/delete a few times but nothing happens.  Everything I need to work on is on the desktop. I'm new to this laptop (got it for Christmas) so I don't know everything about it yet. My questions:1. Could I have done something to turn off the screen? If so, how do I get it back on?2. If I can't get it on, is there a way to get my documents off it?Help! Thanks,Nancy

Answer:New X1 Carbon screen is black after Windows 10 update (not upgrade) last night

you could try closing lid and let it go to sleep then open the lid and see if display lights up again but before you do anything of this get a torch or any kind of lamp/light aimt it on screen and look closley if it's clear black/grey screen is off but if it still display a picture in dark display then backlight is glitched out or broken so then try first thing i mention if laptop screen still remains black then try pressing brightness buttons if wont work do fn + keys for backlight for screen and see if anything happens

I installed it on my notebook Fingerprint Reader Suite v.5.8.2 (UPEK). The problem is that in the "Welcome" screen of Vista, as well as in the "Locked" screen appears whenever two icons: one icon is my username with my profile picture; while the other is the icon of the fingerprint reader that says "Logon fingerprint. swipe your finger."

Previously, I used the fingerprint reader and appeared only my profile picture, full size, in welcome and my name of the user account and the field screen to enter the password below image.

It was enough just slide your finger to login and not two icons appeared on the screens of "welcome" / "locked".

Can anyone help me telling how do I remove the icon from the Fingerprint Reader welcome screen and leave only my profile picture with my name and field to enter the password?

Thanks!

hi, I have a strange problem .... a flashing lock/unlock icon (padlock which alternates form locked to unlocked) shows in the middle of my screen. The machine was built a few years back and hasn't changed significantly since then The symptom has just begun today - Sat Aug 6 my time) and only impacts Windows. The Linux install on this machine is unaffected I'm running Windows 7, with Office 7, both activated successfully (also running Open Office and Libre Office which were upgraded last week) I recently changed video card, about 3 weeks back suspect this is related to some sort of Microsoft security issue can't find any references on the web ... cant generate a screen shot (which suggests this is being inflicted by Windows itself) even with bitmap capture eg. snippy the icon is a very basic black and white padlock shape that stays right in the middle of the screen, is partly transparent and is visible no matter what programs are running - full screen games or windows applications I'm at my wits end with this ... no idea what's causing it or how to remove it any advice would be most welcome

Hello everybody! I can't get rid of the Lenovo icon of num/scroll/caps lock whic appears when you press one of these keys. The problem shows up when I join to my other bigger monitor so the screen resolution gets bigger and the icon gets stucked in the bottom-right corner where was originally the end of previous smaller resolution (as you can see here on the screenshot): I'm desperate because I've already tried most of the tips which I could find on google. Like modifying the registry: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Widcomm\BTConfig\General\KeyIndication, disabling BTTray.exe etc. I have Lenovo Ideapad B560. I would rly appreciate any suggestions. Thank you! Edit: Problem solved. It wasn't any Lenovo utility but Genius Keyboard. So I have just unistalled the ioCenter software and icon finally disappeared.

Hi,
I am not very techie, so sorry if I use the "wrong" terms.
Powered up our IMB Thinkpad R31 and the IBM Thinkpad logo came up then disapeared to a completely black screen. At the top left hand corner was what appears to be a computer or monitor and then next to it a lock which is "locked". We have never had any passwords on this computer, but it will let us type up to 6 keystrokes (as if we did have a password).
So, is this computer completly shot? Is there an IBM password that we aren't aware of?? I no longer have the reboot disks for this computer, but could re-load the XP that was on it (bought legally with OEM).
I would hate to take it to someone as I really can't afford to put much into this ancient machine. Just hoping that someone here will possibly know what I could try!
Thanks!

Answer:IMB Thinkpad R31 - Black Screen & Lock HELP!

I'm not sure about the IBM Thinkpad, but most computer will bring up a diagnostics or set-up screen if you hold down either the 'F8' or 'F10" key while it is booting up. If you can get that far, it should allow you to do a 'System Restore'. Do the 'System Restore' and see if that clears your problem.

this only started to happen within the past day, whenever i would be playing arma 2 the screen would freeze then go to a black screen with nothing on it, i then updated my graphics driver as i was using a 320 version(do not know which one) and now i cant even get batman: arkham city to go past the click to start menu.

i can start my PC and arkham city but every time i get to the main screen right before i can choose my save file i can see graphics tearing and black blocks flickering on batman and then black screen of death making me force my computer to reboot.

had a similar problem happen on elder scrolls V: skyrim right before i started having problems on batman, screen locks up then goes black then comes back and locks up again just to go black again. after that PC became unresponsive. i then booted into safe mode after downloading the latest NVIDIA driver executable uninstalled my current driver and then installed the newest drivers in safe mode. restarted the computer and attempted to start batman arkham city and the same thing is happening.

my PC is roughly a year and a half old without a reformat currently and with the way things are looking i may have to reformat. reaching out on here to see if anyone can help me with this problem before it becomes a must. this problem is happening on both of my GTX 670's in SLI mode or running them solo.

Answer:black screen lock up on games

Hi Kagnesti, Welcome to Sevenforums.

I see that you have latest drivers installed for the card. But, did you remove leftovers from your previous driver?
I will suggest you to use Driver Sweeper.

Uninstall the drivers. Reboot in Safe mode, run Driver Sweeper and remove all the bits of old driver. Reboot again. Install the latest driver for the card. Reboot again. Now check.

As per your system specs, I see all the hardware is at par to play Batman or any other modern games. So, it has to be issue with the drivers. Also, keep an eye on graphic card temps. Use MSI Afterburner to control the fan speed and monitor the GPU temps.

keep us posted.

Hi

Please forgive my limited IT knowledge and skills.

2 days ago, my computer crashes when load/Play an online game (I have played this online game for 4 years on this very machine). It firest seems to jam up, followed by pixels smearing on screen and few seconds later my screen goes black and to an off position although I can still here my hard drive and fan ticking.

I dont think the issue is with my screen, i think its either a Motherboard or Graphics Card overload or burn out.

I have tried loads of things so far i.e. re-update drivers, run virus checkers but nothing helps, so i am sure its a hardware issue.

I have a Dell Inspiron e1705, with a nVidia video card, a 7800 or 7900 go I think. Yesterday when launching a game, the computer locked up, and when trying to restart, the screen stayed black. Today, I tried booting up again, it seemed to work fine, so I tried the game again, this time I saw some artifacts in the form of small colored squiggly lines, and again it locked up. The computer then gave some more black screen, but a little while later it's willing to start again. This time I get the same artifacts in Firefox, followed very shortly by another lock up.

Now it won't start up, most of the time the screen's back light will not come on, but it did come on once. The time the back light came on it also booted far enough for me to hear the windows start up sound, but the sound skipped a bit, and at no time did anything appear on the screen. I've tried using an external monitor, but nothing there either (though I am not sure how to set it up without being able to see my screen, I did try Fn+F8). The time it booted with only the back light on, both fans did kick on.

Any ideas? I'm new to laptop troubleshooting, but maybe the video card has gone out?

Answer:Artifacts and lock up followed by black screen

The big problem with a laptop with a high end gfx card is heat. Even with the GS, which is a mobile version of the 7900, it still gets toasty. There really could several things that went out. Overheating could of ended the life of the GPU. You could also have a problem with the actual physical connection to the screen.

I am not familiar with dell laptops and if they use MXM cards or not. But I'm almost sure they do not. MXM is a format that has been kind of accepted that allow you to actually take out a mobile GPU and replace it. If the laptop does not support MXM, and the GPU is indeed what failed, you are in a bit of a hard place.

Did you try to overclock the card?

My dell laptop starts booting up, displays the splash screen and then goes black. The cursor arrow is all that is visible and you can move it around. It won't start in safe mode, does the same thing. It was bought with Windows Vista pre installed and Dell sent a Windows 7 upgrade disk a month later when it came out, which was installed. i tried starting it with the Vista disk in the drive and it will only let me re-install the program, not repair, with the windows 7 disk on startup it offers the option to repair, but when you click ok it says it needs the original Operating system disk. I am stuck.

I might add, that my kid missed some TV show so she says she downloaded it, from where I am unsure, but following the download she shut down the PC and that is where we are now. I am not sure if she downloaded some junk or if the timing is co-incidence.

It will not let me do the startup repair, it fails to complete, and system restore advises that something is missing, so it will not complete.
I have no clue where to start fixing this, any help would be appreciated.

Thanks Dave

Hiya guys, just signed up looking for some help. I am running Windows 8.1 Pro on a Desktop PC.

My issue is this:

My PC is on 24/7 previously on every version of Windows when I walk away, the screen turns off after 30mins of inactivity, the PC stays on and when I return, I simply moved the mouse and within 2 - 3 seconds the monitor was back on, and I was where I left it.

On Windows 8.1 that sometimes happens, but 90% of the time what is happening, when I return to my PC, I move the mouse and nothing happens, anything I press on keyboard etc, monitor stays off on black screen, if I turn the monitor off by the button and back on, it just stays black, the only way I can get back to my Desktop is to restart the PC!!

I changed several power settings around, disabled password on idle setting, googled many things and tried and its still doing it. The PC is still on fans etc, but doesn't respond.

Weird thing is, it did it today when I was watching a movie on my PC connected media server downstairs (app is PS3 Media Server used with a WDTV Live Hub) I came to use the PC and it was black screen, I went back downstairs and could still access all my files on the media server, so the PC is still up and fully running when it does this, but I just can't get the monitor to display anything other than black screen, again on a reboot everything is fine again.

To summarise, I have power setting to turn off display after 30mins, usually a nudge of the mouse brings the monitor to life, this... Read more

Answer:Windows 8.1 Pro seems to lock when Idle - Black Screen

Does your PC have an on board Video card, and if so are you also using an add Video card. If this is what you have set up then there is a chance that the OS is attempting to read both cards, thus you need to disable the on board video card or disable or remove the added video card. . . Hello, Thank you for posting in the HP Support Forum. I am afraid this issue cannot be resolved remotely and it is a bit difficult to understand and know in details what exactly you removed/replaced. Since it started to occur after this change obvious this is the cause. Please, review these artciles :>> http://h20564.www2.hp.com/hpsc/doc/public/display?docId=emr_na-c01732674>> http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c01732674and follow the appropriate instruction for your specific situation.  If they don't help, you can consult with HP Service center or bring the computer to HP authorized service center where the technicians will probably be able to help you solve the problem. If you cannot find a troubleshooting solution, contact HP Customer support for further assistance or to have the computer serviced. Afternoon Everyone,
I am running windows 7 home prem. OA, on a two month old Acer Aspire. I don't know if anything had been changed or adjusted or loaded. My 12 year old son was doing homework on it, and was the last person to use it before this problem appeared. Later I went to get on the computer and it was locked up and thinking hard, with several windows open. I tried to shut down some of the programs, the computer was sluggish, so I tryed a ctrl, alt, delete for some options. When the task manager wouldn't open, I resorted to a forced shut down.
Upon starting it back up it locked in a black screen just before the welcome screen should have come up. I have tried allowing windows to fix the start up errors, and opening in safe mode, with the same black screen results.
Any one have any idea what this is or how to fix it?
Thanks
C Mike

Answer:unable to customize lock screen, start screen, account picture

If you're using the official release of Windows 8 Enterprise trial, you'll need to activate it. PC Settings doesn't have an entry to Activate, so you'll need to go to the Desktop to do so. The little Action Center icon on the lower right hand side (a little flag) should have a red X. Click on it, and it should say you need to activate. Do so, and you'll get those customizing features unlocked.

Hi,
I have the lock screen set to 'Windows Spotlight'. When locking the computer it just shows a black lock screen with time and date in the lower left corner. No picture. First when I press the keyboard or my mouse, I get the logon screen with a picture from Windows Spotlight behind it. Is this a bug or a feature of the annivesary update? With Windows 10 1511 I had the spotlight image both on the lock screen and on the logon screen.

Hi,
I have the lock screen set to 'Windows Spotlight'.
Best regards

Right before this whole problem happened I was able to start my laptop, although I noticed that the whole loading ring started glitching and so was logging in. It told me that the laptop needed to restart and so allowed it to. It said error message: CLOCK_WATCHDOG_TIMEOUT. It didn't have a problem until reaching 65% and the whole screen turned black with the caps lock key LED started blinking. It's been like this for a while please help

I'm trying to get this Compaq Presario CQ62 laptop to start. I get a black screen with the cap lock light blinking when I turn it on. Occasionally it starts up normally but then returns to no start with the above described problem. I have removed the memory and the hard drive and reset them. Tried each memory stick individually in each memory location. I removed the battery and held the power button down. Several times I tried it and let the battery discharge while it was trying to start, then when the battery was dead, I plugged in the power and it started. I then removed the battery and started it 3 or 4 times and all was well. The next time, no start. I really could use some suggestions as I'm starting to pull my hair out and I don't have much left.

Got a HP Probook 450 G0 here, which is powering up with no screen display. No BIOS, no nothing. It isn't the backlight. You can hear fans spinning up, the Caps Lock key starts flashing, but nothing else happens. I've removed RTC/BIOS battery, nothing. Removed and swapped RAM, nothing. Plugged into TV with HDMI, nothing.  I'm starting to suspect it's something more complex - a motherboard problem, a BIOS problem, or a CPU problem. I seem to remember older HPs having Caps Lock blink codes for reporting issues, but I can't see any info about that for the ProBooks. Any ideas?

Purchased this non working computer for $40.  The screen is black, the caps lock light blinks and the wifi light is lit in orange.  At the time you could hear everything boot up in the computer, the fan would run, the harddrive would boot up .... so I watched some videos on black screen problems on youtube, got it up and running.   However it was a tease, it worked for less than a month.  I didnt fix the problem which was over heating.  I did buy quadfans to go underneath it but turned them off at night and shouldnt have.  I scheduled the computer to check for updates at 3am so the computer would come on then and the fans wouldnt.   Well the black screen issue is backkkk.  The fan doesnt start up, the harddrive tries.  This time nothing is fixing it.  Ive torn it down to the motherboard to replace the fan.  I replaced and upgraded the harddrive and memory ... still nothing.   It also has a new battery and power cord.  Any suggestions as to what the problem may be?

Model CQ61 319WM This is a friend's computer.  Yes, it's old.  But, it was working fine until it went into sleep mode last night.  Hasn't come up since. Searches took me to this HP support page.  Win+B and Power on does not show the BIOS restore screen.  It just shows the same black screen.  It mentions trying more than once.  I tried at least a half dozen times.  Removed the battery and unplugged the power for a few seconds prior to some of the tries. The BIOS download (sp48895.exe) does not provide the option to format a USB drive as bootable.  I searched around and created my own bootable thumb drive.  Then, copied the BIOS files onto it. Unfortunately, that method also uses the Win+B and power on to bring up the boot order screen.  All I get is black. There are a bunch of "black screen" threads on here.  I've read several of them.  But, I haven't found any others that appear to apply to this model. Suggestions appreciated. Drake Christensen

Hello everyone.  I'm attempting to help diagnose my sister-n-laws HP 15 laptop.  I've searched high and low for an answer but all I'm finding is people with different types of "3 beeps".  They either have 3 "short" beeps or 1 short with 2 long or something like that.  I can't find ANYTHING with 3 long beeps.  It does 3 long beeps twice and then nothing.  I can hear the hard drive spinning too. No HP or BIOS documentation ever mentions anything about 3 long beeps either.  Does anyone have any idea what is going on with this thing? I'm saying "3 beeps" but there's a total of 9.  However, these 9 are segmented into 3 definite sets.  It's 3 long beeps then a pause for 2-3 seconds then 3 long beeps, pause, 3 long beeps.  Total of 9 beeps.
