X1 Carbon touchpad requires a hard touchpad press and click for click to register

Question: X1 Carbon touchpad requires a hard touchpad press and click for click to register

I have the X1 Carbon Touch thinkpad with Windows 8 and I just noticed that I need to click on the touchpad real hard for the click to register. Tapping works fine but clicking requires me to apply a lot of pressure. I have restored the default settings of the touchpad and still have this problem. Are there any known issues with Touchpad click issues and requiring a hard presss?

Preferred Solution: X1 Carbon touchpad requires a hard touchpad press and click for click to register

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: X1 Carbon touchpad requires a hard touchpad press and click for click to register

Hi, vtjiggy

Does this apply to the entire TrackPad? Do both left and right-clicking require a great deal of force? You could also try installing the latest Synapatics driver and see if that helps at all. Synaptics is the company that develops UltraNav, which is installed on all ThinkPad systems by default. The latest driver can be found here.

Good luck. Let me know how it goes,
Adam

Hi guys,

Just purchased a new laptop and have noticed that the right click key is very loud and hard to press, the left click is normal, quiet and light to press.

This was the most expensive laptop in the store with the 4th gen i7...yet the right click sounds and feels like something from a laptop from 10 years ago. Anyone else have this issue ?

Think I might return it as I just don't enjoy using it.

Answer:Satellite P50T-AO1C - touchpad right click key is oud and hard to press

I agree... visit the notebook dealer, show him the button issue, test the button on another P50T unit and ask for replacement.

Dear Support,
I have a Dell VOSTRO 3560 laptop that has an Elan Tech SmartPad touchpad. I like its responsiveness very much.
Unfortunately, I recently spilled a bit of coffee and some of that went under the touch pad left and right buttons. The buttons stopped functioning but the touch pad itself is still very good.
Even before the spill I rarely used the buttons. I always used the touch pad to tap to click and two finger tap to right-click.Strangely though, after the spill when the hardware buttons stopped working, the tapping on the touch pad also stopped working. I made sure that the touch pad still can do tap clicking by uninstalling the Dell TouchPad driver and reverting to the Microsoft Mouse PS2 driver. In that case I can use the tap to click feature but only for 1 finger tap. I do not get any other feature as the driver is the simple generic MS one.
My question is would it be possible to still use the Elan tech provided (Dell TouchPad) driver and somehow configure it to accept the tap to click and two finger tap to right-click? This in addition to all the remaining scrolling and gesture support that the driver implements? I tried all the Dell Touchpad settings applet but nothing changed. Perhaps a registry value setting in the section for the elantech?
What seems to be happening now is that the driver is doing some hardware diagnostics, determining that the hardware buttons left and right are not working, and consequently completely disabling left and right click comm... Read more

Model: Dell XPS 15 9530.After a recent motherboard replacement my touchpad doesnt click (as in you cant physically press the buttons) and doesnt register that im pressing the touchpad down. I was wondering whether this is an easy fix or a common issue. Posting from New Zealand but the support over here is pretty attrocious and havent received an email reply for a few days so thought id see if anyone else had similar issues. Was done by a professional so I am wondering why it doesnt work and maybe if he just didnt screw some stuff back up right.

Answer:After motherboard replacement my touchpad doesnt click and doesnt register that im pressing the touchpad down.

Hi,
Thank you for writing to us!
We would suggest you to first uninstall the touch pad driver and then restart the system install the latest drivers from the Dell site .
Use the link for the latest drivers :www.dell.com/.../diagnose
Once the drivers are update check if works fine.
Kindly private message the service tag and email address.

I got my y510p the other day and I like pretty much everything about it except the touch pad. It seems that if you are going to click something with the right or left click buttons on the bottom of the pad your mouse cursor will jump away from what you were going to click on because the touchpad still tracks movement in the area of the buttons. It's really annoying and I can't believe an engineer would let a touchpad release in a laptop that behaves in this way. I am really suprised someone in product testing didn't find this critical flaw in the touchpad design before it was released. I have tried looking in the settings and all I found was a sensitivity adjustment. I have lowered the sensitivity and it helped a bit but the issue is still there. I also tried installing the Asus touchpad driver as recommended in another thread to give more features but it is actually worse because you loose the sensitivity adjustment with that one installed.  Is there anything I can do or do I just have to deal with the flawed design of the touchpad?

Answer:Make y510p touchpad not register movements over top of the right and left click buttons?

I found some sticky back anti slip material sheets on Amazon. I am thinking about ordering it and cutting it out to fit on the bottom of the touchpad. That will give a nice little grip for the buttons which I didn't have before and will hopefully block out the registration of my finger on the buttons when I click down. I will try this if there isn't a software fix for the issue.

I have a brand new Latitude E7470 (Windows 10 Pro) which has some good and some (surprisingly) awful bits, but so far the most surprising and frustrating is that when I tap the touchpad - which acts as a left click - about 90% of the time the mouse pointer moves a few pixels - maybe 10? - before the click event is registered. This doesn't sound like much, but it makes the touchpad at best incredibly frustrating, and at worst unusable.
To clarify: I'm moving the mouse pointer using the touchpad (which works pretty well). I position the mouse pointer over a clickable item - a link in a web page, the "x" to close a tab, a button, etc. - and then use the single tap motion, which should register the same as the left mouse button below the touchpad. And it does register that left click, but the mouse pointer visibly moves several pixels - most often up, but occasionally left or right or diagonally. As a result, the click event either doesn't register, or more likely the pointer isn't over the clickable component anymore so it's like I clicked above or beside it.
I've spent hours experimenting with this, including going back and forth between the new E7470, my ~4 year old Precision M4700, and Macbook Air, just in case this is something weird about how I tap. No matter how carefully (and unnaturally) I click tap on the E7470, the pointer moves. On the other two laptops the pointer never moves when I tap, and simply registers the tap/click event where... Hi, After installing Windows 10, I began to have issues with the left click button on the touchpad.  The left click suddenly stops functioning, and it does not work again until I reboot the computer.  It is not a hardware issue as I have tested this by changing the functionality between the left and right buttons, at which point the left button works again.  My sense is there is a bug in the touchpad's driver software under the new operating system.  I have tried to uninstall and reinstall drivers, I have scanned to ensure the computer does not have a virus, and I have reinstalled the operating system.  None of this solves the issue.  The left mouse click on the touchpad will still suddenly stop working at some period of time after using the computer (generally after leaving the computer idle and later resuming use).   Any ideas, thoughts, suggestions are welcome.  Is it a bug in the driver software for the touchpad that needs to be fixed for Windows 10?   Thanks you!

Please Lenovo. Please. When you one finger click on the TouchPad in the bottom right corner, it performs a Right Click action. If you want to ONLY Left Click (Primary) for every one finger click on the TouchPad, no matter where you click on the TouchPad, you CAN NOT DO THIS with the current driver. You've made a lot of updates in the driver, but you can't disable this setting? You are forcing me to have a zone that does Right Click action on the bottom right of the TouchPad. Guess what, I click that spot about 200 times a day and have to mouse the mouse to click out of the TouchPad right click menu, then go back and click again what I want to click on. There is no setting to remove the Bottom right corner for Right Click action. It is always on, unless you turn off the TouchPad. Two finger click performs Right Click action no problem on the TouchPad, but we need the ability to have every one finger click be the Left Click (Primary) action, not a zone in the bottom right corner that always does a Rigt click action. All my other TouchPad issues are fixes such as Scroll delay. I used Change PC Settings in Windows 8.1 > PC and Devices > Mouse and TouchPad > TouchPad Set Delay to NONE T440s, ThinkPad Yoga, X1 Carbon user 1st generation. Windows 8.1 Update. After being a loyal T400S and X220T user for many years, I am extremely disappointed with the new T440S touchpad which eliminated the touchpad buttons. This "improved", buttonless touchpad is almost useless for me. It is clunky feeling, often unresponsive and noisy.  The entire experience is just terrible. No amount of configuration has helped. My cursor rolls everytime I try to click.  Please bring back the touchpad buttons.

I've tried rebooting my 3rd Gen. X1 Cabon a few times but can't seem to get the touchpad Tap to Click function working again.  It stopped working after the recent BIOS update and it seems all finger gestures on the touchpad are now disabled.  Tap to Click is checked in the Touchpad settings and I've toggled it on and off a few times.  I'm on the latest Synaptics touchpad driver (19.0.17.2).   Any suggestions to kickstart touchpad gestures again?

I purchased a T440s a few months ago. Suddenly I am unable to right click on my touchpad in order to open drop down menus, where they are available,or to right click while highlighting text? I manage to do this if  I click on a specific spot around the bottom, middle of the touchpad, but this takes a lot of fiddling around in order to get the precise spot that happens to work.  It is certainly not a practical solution.  Does this sound like a physical hardware issue, that I need to bring my laptop to the depot for, or might this be something else that can be addressed within my settings or some sort of update?   Has anybody else had this specific problem?   Thanks!

Answer:suddenly right click not work on t440s touchpad, only awkward middle click

For the sake of troubleshooting, I should add that when I connect a mouse it works fine but, of course, this too is not a practical mobile solution.  A response from someone from Lenovo on this site, in particular, would be appreciated.

I'm using the track point for navigation and the touchpad for the mouse click functions, I notice that when I click the touch pad once the laptop registers 2 clicks, this is especially noticeable when using hotmail, i.e. you delete 1 email from the inbox and the next one is also deleted as well. It is as if the de-bounce on the track pad isn't working that well, any ideas what causes this and is there a setting I can adjust to increase the de-bounce period? Thanks J

Can anyone please help me figure out the solution to this? My Dell 14R 5437's touchpad isn't properly working lately. It's right-click button and double-tap to right click function isn't working as intended; the left-click button and single-tap to left click function is working ok. When plugging an external mouse, however, I can right click as normal.
I tried reinstalling the driver from the Dell website and it's still not working properly. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

My son has just purchased a Satellite P850 laptop to use for school work and gaming and has noticed a problem with the behaviour of the touchpad.

When using the touchpad, if you have one finger in the area of the touchpad used for mouse movement, and then try to click the right hand mouse button, the laptop behaves as if you clicked the left mouse button. If you click the right hand mouse button when you are not touching the mouse movement area, it behaves correctly.

We have tried changing various touchpad settings but have not been able to correct this problem. We have also updated the drivers for the touchpad to the latest version from the Synaptics website, but the problem still exists.

Is there a particular driver or setting that gives the correct behaviour of the right hand mouse button whilst still touching the touchpad with the other finger?

Answer:Satellite P850 - Right click on touchpad acting like a left click

> When using the touchpad, if you have one finger in the area of the touchpad used for mouse >movement, and then try to click the right hand mouse button, the laptop behaves as if you clicked >the left mouse button
Sorry but I use touchpad too but in moment when I use one of the touchpad buttons I don?t touch touchpad area at this moment. I have two Toshiba notebooks and I tried to test this on both of them but none of them react on the way described in your posting.

As far as I know such behaviour can be result of ?confused? touchpad.
>... when you are not touching the mouse movement area, it behaves correctly.
In my opinion it is the right way to use touchpad correctly. I don?t think you can change anything using some other touchpad driver. Preinstalled driver is tested and I think the right one.

The right-click touchpad button on my Lenovo Flex 2/15 is not working: it does nothing.  Left click is okay.  When I plug in a mouse, right-click on the mouse does work.  When I turn on the 2-finger tap, it also does not open a  context menu.  I have Windows 10, but the problem started a week after the installation, so I don't think it is a Windows probllem.  Suggestions?

Apologies if this has been already asked but I haven't seen any issues on this after searching a couple hours.  The buttons on my touchpad are getting harder and harder to click. I literally have to press full force and wait a second or two for it to register, it eventually does.  I have attempted to modify the settings as well as installing the latest drivers and still not improving. So my question is, how can I fix this? Is it a debris issue that I can clean out? Or a bad sensor that I can replace? Or can I replace the entire trackpad?  I really like my laptop and I don't use a mouse, so this is slowly becoming unacceptable. I appreciate the help!

I just bought a Yoga 2 Pro and I find the touchpad unusually hard to click. I measured it at the bottom and it required about 270g to click. For comparison, the spacebar takes about 70g and a the left click of a Logitech G5 takes about 75g. I'm thinking there's a problem here unique to me, since I haven't read any similar complaints from others. Do other Yoga 2 Pro owners find the touchpad difficult to click?

Answer:Yoga 2 Pro touchpad hard to click?

To be honest I do find it quite stiff, but not overly where I would find it a nuisance. However I also prefer to tap click rather than the actual physical press of the touchpad.

Build 14316
So I came home after a long day to find that my laptop was registering my left clicks as right clicks for some reason.
In case you're wondering; nope I did not install anything recently unless you count a security update pushed by MS, but I doubt that's what caused this, because I installed that yesterday and the laptop was working fine until 30 minutes ago.
Solution?
Keep in mind that since your mouse/touchpad isn't working properly, you'll be working with the arrow + "enter" keys to do all of this.
Head into settings (win + i key combo) > Devices > Mouse & touchpad
This will open the Mouse options window, but to get to the options you need to scroll down to the last option on the left side of the window ( using the arrow keys obviously) which is "USB" then hit the "tab" key and you should jump to the actual Mouse options.
If done correctly the box under "select your primary button" should be highlighted. So now all you have to do is hit enter and select "left"
Bit of a crude explanation. Hope you can follow it, but if you have any questions go ahead and ask.
Just thought I should post this in case anyone else runs into this

Hello community,

I've recently purchases a Lenovo ThinkPad Edge 540 and it worked just fine untill earlyer today (bought it around mid June). While i was browsing the internet, some how my touchpad developed a problem. It only registeres right click where ever i click.I've deleted the drivers, even tho they were the knewest ones, downloaded a fresh .exe and installed it after the reset and what not and it still has the same problem. If i turn off the touchpad in the ultranav software and enable only trackapad, the buttons work like they should, the large area in the touchpad registeres as the left click and the small area in the top right is registered as the right click. Tho i can't use the touchpad for navigation.
So clicking doesn't works, well neither does tapping. I can doubletap normaly, but i cannot tap and drag such as selecting a block of text.
Again, i've already tried a fresh install of ultranav drivers and it didn't work. The problem manifested itself during normal browsing, nothing was installed nor changed hardware vise. It litteraly changed in a second. It's a really strange problem and i have no idea how to solve it since the driver reinstall didn't work.

I appreciate any help, thanks.

Hello everyone. Apologies if the title wasn't clear.

I bought a dell inspiron laptop recently and was having some trouble when I type. My hands tend to rest at times on the touchpad and every time i do, the single click tap takes me to where ever the mouse is located. Usually its in another section of the document that I am writing in, so that I start to type in the middle of a paragraph that I had already written.

In addition, I have installed asenother mou <-- see??? it did it again!

"In addition, I have installed another mouse driver for a mouse to use with the laptop, so I haven't been able to access any mouse settings other than the additional mouse settings. However, the touchpad still functions."

Is there a way to either disable the touchpad when a mouse is connected, or to change its settings while another mouse is connected?

I am afraid that if I uninstall the mouse driver and see about changing the touchpad settings (if possible), that installing the new mouse again would just take away any of those settings that I would change.

All suggestions welcome. If nothing is forthcoming I will attempt to uninstall the mouse driver and change the touchpad settings. I would prefer not to have to manually disable the touchpad

Thanks in advance!

Answer:Dell touchpad set to click after every tap, hard to type with it there

If you're sure your touchpad options don't include a 'disable when typing for X seconds' then a simple utility like this one should help out...

Hi all,I replaced my power supply to upgrade from 250w to 480w.  I carefully unplugged the old and re-plugged the new (after unplugging power source) and when I confidently turned everything back on the hard drive seems not to work.  there's a faint beep but I'm not sure if it's the POST beep or not.  (I have a vague understanding of that)Instead, the hard drive clicks quite clearly and it clicks 4x then pauses, then 4x, pause, etc, etc. I tried re-plugging the old power supply back in and get the same result.   The computer screen just stays blank the whole time.Did my hard drive just die at that point?   Could switching ps cause the hd to die?a few facts:I do touch the computer case before I stick my hands in there to remove static charge.HD is western digital caviar 40g  WD400Computer is 3ghz P4 running xp with sp3replacement power supply says it's for a P4 and it fits perfectly where the old one came out, same connections etc.I have a 160g drive on it's way from Ebay that I intended to replace this drive with anyway and I have the 40g drive backed up on an external so it's not a disaster but it sure is an inconvenience.I'm ready to try hitting it on the side (percussive maintenance) but thought I'd try a post first. :-)Thanks,John

Hi
Running Win10 on an Acer E5-511-C46Y.
I have an Elantech touchpad which every so often (maybe weekly) decides it's no longer going to do tap to click (my preferred setting) and is going to behave as though I am clicking and dragging the whole time. So I have to click instead of tap. It's mighty annoying.
I have done all the obvious things - driver up to date, BIOS version is the latest, settings are fine and disabling/enabling has no impact. The only cure seems to be turning the computer off and on again (who knew?!)
Acer say reset, but suspect that's the recommendation for every unsolved issue.
Is there a way to restart touchpad and reload all the drivers (essentially, to do what the laptop would do when rebooting) but without restarting?
Many thanks in advance...

I was trying to click something, so I pushed down on the track pad with the back of a pen and you hear the clicking noise, but it does not register on the computer. That, regardless of a finger, should register as a click, as Im pressing the actual button down, not just tapping it. I tried all different objects, like the side of a phone, an eraser, etc.... But it doesnt. How can I make a pressed down click on the trackpad, actually act as a click?

Answer:How To Force a Click to Register as a Click on TrackPad? (Not Just Fingers)

Not sure which model you have? but I have a Yoga 3 11. The trackpad was flaky from the moment I bought it.Eventually I got so frustrated with the trackpad not registering so I sent it to a Lenovo repair centre. It took them 1 month to get back in touch and confirm it was faulty. They also advised that I would have to pay $120 (australian) to get it fixed because I bought it in the UK (even though it was under warranty) A few weeks later, same problem again. Clicks not registering, have to keep pressing, or applying more pressure for clicks to register. Not sure what to do next. I guess Lenovo will be no help at all so I'm stuck with a faulty laptop.

Hi, I'm having trouble with my moms PC (Acer laptop). Right clicking is not working, but left click is working fine.

I went to the trackpad settings and first checked that "Use two fingers to right click" was checked, and it was. Then I tried checking the other option called something like "Press in the lower right corner of the trackpad to right click". Here's where the fun started. Now I was ONLY able to right click. Didn't matter where on the trackpad I pressed - always gave me a right click... So had to use TAB and spacebar to disable that option again lol.

Tried going to the real control panel (i.e. the old classic one) and checked the mouse options... didn't have anything about right clicking in there. And there is no driver-specific tab there. I remember when wetting up the computer a year ago that it was impossible to find drivers that gave a tab there. So I'm stuck with the Windows 10 settings panel.

Anyone have any idea what's going on?

Answer:Can't right click using touchpad

Welcome to the TenForums.

Not sure what is happening but you are second to post problem in last few hours. I would try to roll back driver.

If this works you may wish to disable Window driver updates.

Stop Windows Updating Drivers
Right click on Windows Start
Click on Control Panel
Click on System and Security
Click on System
Click on Advance system settings
Click on Hardware tab
Click on Device Installation Settings
Click on No
A menu appears (first time) click Never Install driver software.
You may get a warning. Click the option that says I?ll take care of it (not exact words)

The other thread is in the General Support section.

Please post back in Rolling Back work.

Is there a way to enable a key or something to right click using the touchpad, sorta like a mac? It could be a keyboard key, 2 fingers idc.

Answer:Right Click with Synapsis touchpad?

There are probably programs out there that can substitute a key such as Alt to perform right click functions, but I've never heard of them.

As far as the multi-touch functionality goes, unless your touchpad has multi-touch, there's no way to enable it. It's not entirely a software function, it also relies on hardware. This is why you can use multi-touch with some touchpads and not with others. It's also why a Macbook Pro's touchpad has more multi-touch features on the OS X side than on the Windows 7 side.

I just got a new hp notebook.  I can't figure out how to disable the tap click on my touchpad.  When I go to the control panel and find the mouse options, there are several settings to change (pointer speed, appearances, etc) but nowhere is there any way to disable the click.  I absolutely hate it and it really interferes with my use of this laptop.  What am I missing? Thanks!

Got my first x64 laptop this week and noticed a few hiccups with it. Anytime I run certain 32 applications, I can't use the touchpad to perform clicks. I can still move the pointer around but the tap-to-click stops working. Going into stand by and coming out usually fixes the problem, but in some cases I had to reboot. I tried a couple versions of the 64 bit drivers (synaptics , from their website and the ones from gateway). I still see the same issue.

Anyone else experience this?

Answer:Unable to use touchpad to click

I removed my Synaptic touchpad driver- (restart to remove, then restart again to enable the Microsoft tap/scrolling feature)

Microsoft touchpad driver/software is much better without the glitches.

I bought a brand new Windows 10 ACER Aspire E5 series laptop computer back in February. I have not had any issues at all with it. But today I have this very annoying issue. When I lightly tap my touchpad on links instead of opening the link like it had been doing previously all it does is highlight the link and drag it all over the screen. The same issue happens when I try to switch tabs. It locks onto the tab and I have to click again for it to release. This is very annoying when all I'm wanting to do is switch tabs.

My touchpad is one of those multigester ones and I have turned off the following options
Allow double-tab and dragUse a two finger tab for right clickUse a two finger drag to scrollUse a two finger pinch to zoom

I don't know why it started doing this today. I also have clicklock turned off under additional mouse options.

I have been using my Lenovo X1 carbon for 4 months.  But the experience has been awful. I don't know if my tackpad is defective or not.  Currently I am in the Philippines and there is no way to check or service my unit since they don't carry this model here. My problem is when i tap the touch pad the right click button comes out 80% of the time.  This is really annoying.  I already disabled the right click to double finger tap.  But still even with one single tap on the middle of the touchpad the result is 80% of the time its like doing a right click.. Very annoying. Please help me.  If this is touchpad is defective can anyone let me know so I will have this serviced in Dec. in the US.

Hello,
My cursor randomly froze and would not move today, so I restarted my laptop to see if that would help. That time, the cursor disappeared completely, so I got my plug-in mouse and tried rolling back and updating the drivers for the touchpad. I got it now to where the cursor is visible and moves, but does not click. According to my drivers, they are all up to date. I am not very computer savvy, but have been looking up what to do online and this was what I was offered. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I have a Lenovo ideapad 300.

Answer:Touchpad will move, but not click.

Hi frustratedclick. Welcome to the TenForums @frustratedclick

Have you entered the settings for your touchpad and confirm them. Each touchpad has different options, you might even have the option to disable certain components of Touchpad when an external mouse is connected.

Start => Settings => Devices => Mouse (to see how that is set) then Touchpad, in the upper right "Additional Settings".

Might I suggest you load the driver from the Lenovo site for your device. I read you had latest, I'm suggesting one shipped with. See what version is installed now in device manager, perform the install and confirm older level is installed. I've seen Windows mis-identify touchpads so the wrong driver gets loaded. In that case a Toshiba loaded a Lenovo driver when it should have used Synaptic.

I was called to a neighbour's house yesterday to sort out their sound problem on their new laptop.I managed to get their sound working but was somewhat mystified by their mouse controls. Their laptop has a touchpad for moving the mouse cursor around the screen and doing a double-tap seemed to open things like a double-left-click on a regular mouse. But I could not figure out HOW to get the thing to do a Right-Click for bringing up right-click menus and had to go round the long way for everything.Just how are you supposed to do a Right-Click on those touchpad things?

OK, I've spent 2 nights now reviewing the forum, and have not found an answer.  Surely I can't be the only person that wants to turn off the tap/click feature on the touch pad. Every other machine I've ever had it's a simple click box under mouse headings.   I can't find anything.  And the sensitivity changes don't relly help.   I just have never liked that function.  Thanks for any help.

Hi All, I just got a 4K Y50 Multitouch model in late December, and the touchpad is working very poorly.  It seems broken, but it's brand new!   Basically, the left click is often unresponsive. I generally have to click 5 times before it registers. Right click fares a little better, but still often requires repeat clicks to get a response.  The right click seems to work a little better when I hold it in for a half-second before releasing.  But this is really not a solution. Plus, if it's not a hardware problem, I feel like holding it in is putting extra stress on the click mechanism.   The problems show up both in Windows and Linux.  I can't tell if there's some firmware upgrade or setting I can adjust to make this work.  Maybe I just got a defective unit.  I've had this problem since day-1. - Mike

Basic story is that I bought my lenovo laptop about a year ago. I was excited when I received it, however, I quickly realized that the right mouse click button did not work correctly. You have to press it very hard and it regularly fails to work. As far as I can tell from reading around, the synaptics version of the pad had issues that were resolved by a driver update. Has there been any sort of fix for the ELAN version? I've tried both uninstalling and reinstalling the latest drivers available (as far as I can tell) to no benefit. Would really love to get this fixed so that I can use this laptop as intended.

I can move the cursor in such case but not tap - click to be able to click again I have to reboot ( it happens both on windows and linux)

On windows I press alt+ctrl+del and when the windows task manager appears I can tap-click it and after I do I can tap-click someting else and so on.
One click on task manager one click on someting else until I reboot and the problem disappears just to suddenly appear unexpectadly at one time.

I've received a shiny new ThinkPad T470 today, a much needed upgrade from my T410. Should the bottom left & right corners of the touchpad actually physically "click" when pressed, or is it purely a tap-sensitive device? The touchpad seems to be lower by 1-2mm at the bottom end than at the top end, it doesn't sit flush at the bottom whereas it's level with the main chassis at the top.

Answer:T470 - should the touchpad "click"?

Should the bottom left & right corners of the touchpad actually physically "click" when pressed, or is it purely a tap-sensitive device? Yes, or at least mine does, and it works. The touchpad seems to be lower by 1-2mm at the bottom end than at the top end, it doesn't sit flush at the bottom whereas it's level with the main chassis at the top. Mine is slightly below the main chassis on all 4 sides, and the same depth on all 4 sides.

I have Dell Inspiron 4100. The touchpad can sense movement but tap-to-click function doesn't work. The left buttons above and below the touchpad are not also working. I think that this is a hardware problem because it also happens in Linux.

Is this problem repairable? Around how much do you guys think it would cost?

Answer:Touchpad Tap-to-click not working

The cable connecting them may just be loose, you can get the service manual easily from Dell's website. If it is a hardware failure then I believe you have to replace the palmrest assembly, which is easy enough. The instructions would also be in the service manual.

Internal Parts And Assemblies

There's a link to your parts list, the palm rest assemblies are about halfway down. Just take any of their part numbers and search them on ebay to find the cheapest place to buy from. Probably won't cost more than $30 all together.

How do I turn off the click in the main touchpad area?

Disabled touchpoint, so tapping on the touchpad is supposed to work as the following: tapping in a small bottom-right region triggers right-click and elsewhere left-click. This only works for me if I enable two-finger tap as right-click. After I disable it, tapping in the bottom-right region does not trigger right-click... I suppose that this is a software bug. Anyone encountered the same problem?

guys, i've just got my new laptop which is great except for a really anoying trait - i'll try to explain as best i can.

i am having trouble selecting mulitple files using the "control" click.
If i hold control and click straight away it will mutilple select.
If i hold control, then move my mouse pointer (using the touchpad) and then click, it does not multiple select (it ignores teh fact that i am holding control)

it's very anoying, as it is natural to hold control and move the mouse about selecting the multiple files.......

i think that the issue is that there is some sort of control asigned to holding control and moving the pointer????? it's the only thing that i can think of.

i have dell laptop (studio 15), windows vista with a standard touchpad i have looked at the options but nothing looks obvious. the touch pad does have an area for zoom and scroll but i don't think that they have any affect.

Thanks in advance for any help or suggestions...

Answer:touchpad control click anoyance

Are you clicking ctrl with your finger on the touchpad or clicking ctrl and then touching the touch pad to move the pointer?
Maybe your inadvertently clicking by tapping the touch pad.
Does the the first item you select stay highlighted while the cursor is moving or does it unhighlight (word? ) as soon as you start to move the cursor?

That's all I can think. Maybe try the touch pad options for sensitivity or look for any other settings that may cause it

Hi, I need a confirm from other owners of the XPS 15 9550 laptop.

Is it normal that in the following highlighted area of the touchpad is impossible do the physical click?
even if I push very very hard?

Answer:Touchpad physical click question

It's symptomatic of a failing battery -- if the battery is swelling, the first place you'll notice is with the touchpad (which is right above it).
See here:
en.community.dell.com/.../20022402
(meanwhile, remove the base cover and check the battery -- if it's swelling, get it out of the system immediately and out of your home or office -- this IS a safety issue).

My single-surface touchpad is exasperating and I would never buy this model if I knew... Much of the time, a right-click behaves simply as a left click. For instance, a multiple hits Google search page disappears and becomes simply the one selection I'd intended to "open in new tab" from the customary drop-open submenu, which fails to appear upon right-clicking a hit.
Also, right-clicking a highlighted block of text often simply removes the highlighting instead of providing a drop-open submenu for "copy" or "cut" or the like.
I'm trying to get in the habit of substituting two-finger taps for right clicks, but that choice is unreliable and fails rather often.
Dell ought to be all over this, but improved drivers haven't been offered.  Short of resigning myself to using an external mouse on a table top (not exactly why we wanted a laptop with touchpad in the first place), is there anything I can do to improve this temperamental touchpad's performance?  I've done my best with settings; nothing corrects the performance problem described here.

Hello all, Just recently bought a HP Spectre x30, and very pleased with it. However, there is something ANNOYING going on and I can't seem to fix it without using the system recovery option. It works, but doing this on a daily basis is just not doable.  There is something I do with the touchpad, or something wrong with the touchpad and I think it is very easy to fix but I can't detect the exact definition of the problem. When the system is recovered, the touchpad works fine. With the left click I am able to select a piece of text, and with the right click I am able to use the dropdown menu and options such as copy and paste. However, when I accidentely do something, I think something like double click with the left click on the pad, something happens and the options I just described dont work anymore. Instead: a scroll lock or something similar happens. The only thing that I can do with the left click and the right click is scroll through a page. The icon looks like this: https://thumb9.shutterstock.com/display_pic_with_logo/4230679/520422082/stock-vector-scroll-icon-520... I have no idea how to shut this off and it is very anoying since I use my laptop daily for my study and need to  be able to select text and copy it.  Please help me, I am so happy with my laptop but this is just veryyy unpractical!! Thank you!!

So I recently purchased a new laptop that has Windows 10 installed (Acer Aspire E5-573G) and I would like to change the way the touchpad taps work. Specifically, I would like a middle click from a three finger tap. It's an ELAN touchpad, if that makes any difference, and I have installed the latest drivers.
Everything I looked up on google said to either use some program from ELAN, or to edit the registry. There currently is no program installed on here from ELAN, and all the google results I could conjure up while looking for a download for the program are people wanting to get rid of it. The only thing in my programs and features from ELAN is what I believe is the driver - "ELAN HIDI2C Filter Driver X64 13.6.3.1_WHQL"
The suggested registry edit also isn't available for me. That is to say, the path "HKEY_CURRENT_USER > SOFTWARE > Elantech" does not exist.
I'm not sure what the correct way I should be going about this is. Everything else regarding the touchpad works as intended, but I have no way of customizing it beyond the settings in windows. And since I have zero interest in having Cortana or action center being on my computer let alone as mouse commands, those settings are completely worthless to me.

This may be a silly question, but are the right and left clicks for the touchpad suppose to be silent? I've been using a wireless mouse since I got the laptop and only realized the touchpad right and left clicks are silent when my mouse broke and I had to start using the touchpad.  If not, does it mean something's broken, or is it something I can customize? And if it's customizable, how can I get the clicks back? I'm afraid I might press too hard or something and break the touchpad. I need those clicks. Help please.

Is there any way to disable the right-click zone of the touchpad on my T440s?  The lower right corner seems to be permanently mapped to a right click with one finger, which is completely unnecessary given that I use two fingers for a right click.  Disabling this would make the touchpad behavior much more predictable.

Answer:Disable right click zone of the touchpad?

I second this. I can do this on Linux, the fact that I can't do it on Windows too is kind of a shame.

We’re listening. We can completely understand. If that happened to us we’d be really upset too. We request you to run the hardware diagnostics to check if there is any hardware causing the issue. You can click here to find the steps to run the hardware diagnostics. Please let us know if there is any error code and a validation code.
We also suggest you to update the touchpad driver from our support site. Kindly enter your service tag # on the link below and click on ‘Get drivers and downloads’ then download the "touchpad driver" from "Mouse, Keyboard & Input Devices"  section and install it.

Hi.
I own a Toshiba L500-A-1EF and although the touchpad works properly, cursor moves, one tap acts like a click, etc, the click itself is not working.
I've tried updating the Synaptics drivers and playing around with the touchpad settings but sadly with no results.
Can someone help me?
Many thanks.
Pedro

Hi. I have a Sony Vaio VGN-CS215J laptop. My laptop's touch pad mouse has been really buggy lately. Sometimes, the touchpad is working fine, but suddenly the touchpad wouldn't allow me to click with either the touchpad or the left clicker. Weirdly enough, even if this does happen, my right clicker on my touchpad usually works fine. It causes my scrolling to buggy sometimes too. I reinstalled my Synaptics driver for the touchpad and its still giving me the same troubles. My usb mouse works fine as far as I can tell. Is the problem most likely physical (ie. Do I have to physically clean out my laptop?).

Answer:Laptop Touchpad sometimes doesn't click

It probably is a damaged left click switch, and it could be something that has fallen in behind the button. To clean or replace it likely won't be easy, expect an hour or two of dis-assembly to be able to remove the touchpad and if its broken you may have to source a new one from somewhere to replace it. I'd probably recommend just using a mouse with it.

The touchpad on my laptop suddenly stopped working today.  First, it appeared as though the right mouse button was permanently pressed, so whenever I used the left mouse button, the action for the right mouse button would also happen at various times.  Now, neither of the buttons work at all.  (I can use the touchpad itself to move the arrow around the screen, but not click.)  I've tried restarting, taking the battery out, updating and rolling back the drivers (which are Elantech).  I'm using a USB mouse now and it works fine.  Can anyone help?

Answer:Lenovo Y 40 70 Touchpad click issue

Hi bb007,

I'm sorry to hear that...

This seems to me like a Hardware Concern.

Try going for a generic touchpad driver and see if he issue is still the same.
Open Device Manager and Open the Mice and other pointing device.
Uninstall the Devices under it and make sure to place a check mark on the Delete driver software prompt.
Restart the computer and check the issue if still the same.

If still the same then I Guess you will need to call Lenovo Technical Support for Hardware assistance.

Regards
Solid Cruver

Just recently observed that the right-click button on my touchpad is not working. This just happened today. I have a Sony Vaio VGN-NR280E laptop and am using Vista. I've checked the device manger, drivers are up to date, no yellow exclamation marks.

Here is what I've tried:

- reinstalled Original Alps Driver and restarted
- reinstalled Original Alps Driver a second time using Windows Back up and Recover
- made sure the mouse settings in Control Panel were correct

I think it could possibly be a hardware issue as pressing the right click key is not responding or opening any options, however, I haven't spilled anything on it or dropped it. My last option is to ship it off to Sony but my warranty expired a few months ago, and I looked at the price list and it is crazy expensive.

Please help!

I recieved my Pavillion Laptop 15-au070sa for Christmas 2016, so I've had it less than three weeks, and I'm finding that clicking the mousepad is way too hard, my hands are painfull within minutes. The pressure needed to click the mousepad is way higher than it should be, and I cannot find a way to alter the pressure in the settings. I have now got a bluetooth mouse, which helps when I am sitting at a table. However, most of the time I use my laptop on my lap, so I don't have room for an external mouse, plus, I don't see why I should be placed in a position where I have no option but to use an external mouse. How should I deal with this please?

I would really like the right click to work like it used to but would even settle for the two finger option that I have read about. I have tried drivers, settings, Lenovo support and have had zero luck with getting this to work. I see lots of posts claiming there is a fix yet nothing works for me. Can anyone please help me walk through fixing this?

I had been having issues with the secondary click features on my Yoga 900, here's the issue and how I fixed it. As those with Yoga 900s (and many other Yoga models) should know, the touchpad allows you to click anywhere except the lower right corner to register as a left click, and the lower right corner registers as a right click. I do not like this, much preferring the Macbook approach of single finger left click, two finger right click. So I turned off the option in the settings which makes the lower right corner behave as a right click, expecting this to make it behave like the rest of the touchpad (left click). I was mistaken, it made this area on the touchpad do nothing. After a couple hours browsing the forums and contacting support, I had no solution, but had resolved to the fact that it was probably a driver bug and there wasn't much I could do other than wait for a driver update. Then I turned to the all-knowing entity that is google. A general tech forum suggested an idea that worked for the Yoga 3, a resigtry edit. Before doing this, I enabled the lower right-hand corner click to be secondary click (same setting I turned off earlier). If you don't do this, the solution may not work Open regedit and navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Synaptics\SynTP\TouchPadRMIHID2cTM3066Backup it! Got one for the gurus!    My daughter's T30 touchpad will send the pointer all over the interface. However if she tries to click either the touchpad or any button to executethe GUI radio button (Windows XP) .. NOTHING HAPPENS! Hitting the ENTER button only works infrequently. What is more puzzling is the fact that even upon efforts to reinstall theoperation system, we notice the same lack of functionality! Only on some interface boxes will the keyboard function. Tried updating the bios.    Already have the latest so no go. Tried using a USB mouse.    Works with hesitance OK. What say ye IBM gurus?    Got a clue? Thanks in advance for your responses.

New Dell Inspiron 5567.
In all of my previous computers from different companies but not Dell, "Mouse Properties" has included one additional tab on the far right of the tabs, which has a setting to Disable Touch to Click.

Mouse Properties on this laptop does not have that, nor can I find that simple but for me essential setting option.

How do I do that?
