Lenovo x230 Recovery

Question: Lenovo x230 Recovery

Hi All! I'm sorry to sound like a bit of a newb here, but i'm looking for a little bit of assistance with my x230 laptop. I bought the laptop back in september with windows 7 professional. A couple months later, I upgraded to windows 8 only to not really like it too much and decide for now I want to revert back to Windows 7. Not knowing what my options were, I installed Windows 7 Ultimate back on the machine through an external cd drive, but now I'm missing about 100gb from my main drive, I ordered a 500gb 7200 rpm drive but now I only have about 350 GB available after the clean install. I wasn't too sure how the recovery options on the x230 worked. I see that next to my main C drive, there is another drive there located "Recovery" It has about 75% of the disk space being taken up but there is absolutely nothing within the actual drive when I actually click it. It's probably too late, but is there any way to actually take my laptop back to the way it was when I first bought it? I only ask because it seems there's something on that recovery drive but I just can't figure out what it is. I would appreciate any help at all, I'm sorry for sounding like such a newb with this stuff!

Preferred Solution: Lenovo x230 Recovery

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Lenovo x230 Recovery

Hi, Flyerfan16

If you are viewing your drives in Disk Management, how big is the Recovery partition? The partitions from Lenovo are normally between 7 GB and 10 GB when the machine ships. If the original partition is still on the drive, then you should be able to recover to the settings when the machine was first purchased.

You can attempt recovery by starting the machine as normal and then pressing Enter repeatedly to interrupt startup. A menu should then appear, with an option available to recover your system. Press the associated key for this action and then follow the prompts. If all works well, you should be able to go back to the way it was. If you choose this option, make sure to back up all files that you wish to keep that are currently on the system.

Hope it helps,
Adam

I want to be able to boot my X230 in UEFI only (CSM off). Lenovo media for X230 does not seem to be UEFI bootable, so I boot it with CSM on. The Recovery program asks about the GPT or MBR partitioning with the explanation that with GPT it will be bootable in UEFI only. But when I reboot after recovery and turn CSM off, the "Starting Windows" screen freezes endlessly. There is some hdd activity, but no Windows are loaded.Any clue what went wrong and how to fix it? Thanks.

Answer:X230: win 7 x64 in uefi using lenovo recovery media

You need to enable CSM when ever booting to external devices, so that is normal.     The difference between GPT and MBR is that the newer GPT is more robust, secure and allows more partitions and better error recovery, but both should work.   If you press and hold down the [F8] key, and then turn on the comptuter, do you get the option to boot in to Safe Mode, and if so can you boot in to Safe Mode, or Safe Mode with Networking? I presume that you are recoverying due to a prior problem, so more informaiton on why you were recovering may be helpful. Best of luck

I called Lenovo and got my Windows 8 recovery disc shipped out free of charge ten minutes later. I have a case number to prove it! This is so awesome.I didn't say anything except that I didn't know why windows won't start, I didn't know why recovery wont start, and I needed my discs so that I could get things working again. That's the last time I let my mischievious daughter play with my laptop before I get it all set up. The guy on the phone thought that was pretty funny... Thank you, Lenovo! You guys are so very helpful!

I bought lenovo thinkpad X230 in January 2013. I made a recovery USB on a 16 GB pendrive. I bought a windows 8 pro upgrade offer as well. But i did not install it at that time and kept it for future use.  About a week ago I installed windwos 8 on my system in dual boot mode making a partition on primary HDD.everything went ok with only problem that my windows 8 did not activate. I was ok with that. But when i tried F11 recovery function, it was not working. So i tried factory reset through recovery USB i created earlier. It opened up and said BOOTMGR missing. Later with some research I realized that i didnt make USB active (bootable) before burning it.(Though this is ridiculous considering, tools provided must have done that. Like when you make windows bootable.) With all this(and me panicking), I tried backing up my data with image i created through R & R tool. After back up, I lost my recovery partition on HDD. And I guess i accidentally deleted System_DRV partition as well.  Though my computer is running fine. I need a bootable media. it would be great if you can provide it. Also if you can restore my comp to factory setting with recovery partition, it would be great. Please help me. Thanks in advance.

Hi, You can make bootable media (CD, USB stick or USB HDD) for using with your Factory Recovery Data USB stick.Just launch Lenovo Factory Recovery Disks app from Control Panel, deselect Data media creation, select needed Boot media type. Note you'll need less then 300 mb free space on media.

Question: X230 recovery Data

I decided to back up my x230 and get alittle more HD space. After i had done this I realized that I had used a 64GB Stick and that was a waste of space. I deleted, (reformatted) this memory stick and put in a 16GB to be greeted with the message "can only have one backup of Windows operating system". Is there a work around for this problem?I don't have a backup now and I want to use the smaller memory stick. Thanks guys

I recently bought an x230--very happy so far--and want to prepare a usb stick as recovery media, but am afraid to try as I hear you only get one chance to do this. Greatly appreciate answers/advice on the following before I go ahead: 1/ What is the minimum sized USB stick I could use for this?2/ Do I need to make the stick bootable before using the recovery media generation software, or will it do that for me?--the advice I've found on this all seems pretty dated now.3/ Is it possible to boot from a USB 3 stick with x230, and if so is there likely to be any advantage of using a USB 3 stick over a USB 2 one?--I guess question 1 may deal with the advantage or not bit of the question. Thanks for any help. g

Restoring the factory contents by using Recovery Disc Set

When the hard disk drive or solid-state drive is replaced because of a failure, no product recovery program is
on the new drive. In this case, you must use the recovery disc set for the computer. Order the recovery disc
set and the drive at the same time so that you can recover the new drive with the preinstalled software when
they arrive. For information on which discs to order, go to http://www.lenovo.com/serviceparts-lookup.
The recovery disc set consists of the user instructions and the following set of DVDs to restore the computer
to the original factory configuration.
? Operating System Recovery Disc (one disc): This disc restores the Microsoft® Windows operating system.
Use this disc to start the recovery process.
? Applications and Drivers Recovery Disc (one or more discs): This disc restores the preinstalled
applications and drivers on the computer.
? Supplemental Recovery Disc: This disc contains additional content, such as updates to the software that
was preinstalled on the computer. Not all recovery disc sets come with a
Supplemental Recovery Disc.
Notes:
? You must have a DVD drive to use the recovery discs. If you do not have an internal DVD drive, you
can use an external USB DVD drive (Cannot use USB stick to create restore media).
? During the recovery process, all data on the drive will be deleted. If possible, copy any important data
or personal files that you want to keep onto remo... Read more

You can do two things: 1. Go to Windows Anytime Upgrade and purchase the Pro feature. This is the easiest way to upgrade, but it costs a small amount to do this. 2. Try booting from the Windows 7 DVD and see if it will let you start it and install the upgrade. You will need the license key from the Windows 7 DVD to do this. ... JDH

USB stick needs Active partition in order to boot. Look at this page: http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/detail.page?LegacyDocID=MIGR-74246As you already have Factory_Recovery media, copy all files from the stick, make that as it's described below, copy files back, try to boot. If laptop will not boot from the stick you should prepare boot media again.

Hi everyone, I've got a CTO x230 on its way and was reading a bit about adding an mSATA SSD to the available slot under the palmrest.  In these forums I've seen a couple posts here telling people that if they have 2 drives installed and want to run the R&R software, that they should remove the drive they don't plan on installing to. Since I'm a tinkerer and will probably be reformatting/imaging every couple weeks or so, is there a better way than just pulling the main hard drive or msata drive from the machine to recover it properly?  What about removing the drive from the boot order in the BIOS until the R&R software has completed? Looking to avoid opening up the case anymore than just the first time installing.  I'd be interested to hear some opinions on this.

Answer:x230 mSATA SSD rescue and recovery

Perhaps we need to clarify a few things here. In order to set up the mSATA As your boot drive, you'll want to pull the existing hard drive. Once the mSATA is set up as your "C" drive and you've given the hdd a new drive letter and changed the boot sequence then there really Isn't much reason to pull drives. As a tinkered, you'll also not want to use the rescue and recovery software in the future anyway as that will restore the computer to delivery condition. What you'll want to do is make that r and r media and put it away in a safe place. Then you'll want to set up your drives as you want them, image them and use that image for restore. You'll probably also want to make an image of a clean install of Windows. You should only need to pull drives in the future if you change boot orders and drive letters.. Even then it may not be necessary if you do it right but pulling the hard drive is the easiest way of setting up the mSATA.

unfortunately most likely the only way is through your Lenovo support channels, anyone distributing the discs online would be doing something which is illegal.

It may be possible to obtain them through the following website, however I'm not sure if the site is valid for systems purchased in the Ukraine.

Answer:Lenovo Think Pad x230 and mSATA SSD

Hi, odessit

This should be possible. There is a slot for an mSATA drive in the X230, as shown here. Also shown in that link is that an mSATA is a user-replaceable part. After purchasing your SSD, then all you will need to do is install it per the instructions here (pp. 70) Also, you will likely need to download this firmware update after installing the drive. This will allow the BIOS to recognize the SSD if you plan to use it as the C: drive of the system. The update can be found here.

Hope it helps,
Adam

Question: Lenovo X230 setup

Hi, everyone,A quick question. I have an x230 on the way and am looking to set up my workspace in a specific way. Here is what I want: an external monitor that will allow me to move the cursor from the laptop screen to the other monitor. So, in essence, a dual monitor set-up but with the laptop screen as one of the monitors. I would also like to be able to use a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse while in this set-up. Do I need the UltraSeries 3 dock, or something else? Thanks!Parker

Answer:Lenovo X230 setup

Hi, Parker

You should be able to accomplish this without a docking station. The X230 supports a dual independent display and has a VGA port and a Mini DisplayPort. So if you have a monitor with one of these connections and hook it up to your laptop, then it should work. You will need to make sure that you Extend the display and not Duplicate it. Duplicate will give you the same image on both screens. You can just use Win + P to set it appropriately.

As for the Bluetooth keyboard and mouse, you should have no issues here either. Provided Bluetooth is turned on in the system and you have compatible Bluetooth peripherals, it should work like a charm once they've been paired.

Hope it helps,
Adam

I only have 8GB of RAM so the 16GB problem shouldn't affect me either? Anyone know what might be wrong? When reading some forums I saw that people who updated their BIOS were able to fix their problem as long as they only had 8 gigs of ram, which is why im confused I still have DFA00000. Will it still work regaurdless of this? I thought the update was supposed to fix this.

I have a Lenovo x230 laptop with an i7 processor that starts the second time. This means that when you first turn on, there is a black screen. The restart must be forced and then normally turns on. I tried to use an external screen, tricks with disconnecting the battery and pressing the switch, CMOS battery, RAM memory replacement - nothing did not succeed. On this motherboard, the service replaced the BIOS chips due to failure in the upgrade. They said that the computer would not work anyway. The computer, however, works, but after the second launch - which is annoying. I have updated the BIOS on my own, which did not solve the problem. Once the computer starts, it works very steadily and without problems. I have not found a similar case anywhere on the internet.

i have upgraded  X230 harddrive and installed OS from Backup, my fingerprint did work fine after upgrade for 3 month after that fingerprint just started giving error  E7210005 (cannot enrolluser, cannot update passport, cannot find finger print sensor), but in the device mananger panel it show that it is workng properly, when i open biometrics in control panel it shows that my device is not availabe.(i have also allowed fingerprint port in the bios). i reinstalled windows, update finger print drivers and software (from lenovo and also tried the ones from original manufacture-Authen tech). i tried to change the group policy setting, and also created new user wit admin privillages and also enabled all the sevice settings. but the problem error remains the same, it has been a moth now trying to search for solution but still nothing has come up. wat worries me is that the device manger shows that the FP device is working properly

Answer:Lenovo X230 FingerPrint Error

If you re-installed Windows and this problem still happens, I'd say there's a strong possibility that your fingerprint sensor has failed and needs to be replaced.  Even if the device looks OK in Device Manager, this really doesn't mean much.  All it means is that Windows can talk to the USB device that hosts the fingerprint sensor, but the fingerprint sensor itself could still be malfunctioning.

Some things that can help confirm hardware problem:
1.  Shut the system off, does fingerprint green LED flash slowly?  If so it means that the sensor contains some fingerprint templates so lets try to clear them.
2.  Turn the system on and press F1 to enter BIOS setup
3.  Go to the Security menu and choose Fingerprint, then clear the fingerprint sensor.  You should see a message about success or failure.  Failure definitely means HW problem.
4.  If you see a message about success clearing the fingerprint sensor from BIOS, then shut the system off again.  The green LED should not be flashing anymore because you cleared the sensor in BIOS.  If the green LED still flashes, then it means HW problem because the fingerprint templates were not really cleared.

So try the above steps to try to confirm the HW problem, or just call service in your country and request help.

Dear support, My Thinkpad X230 (NZD78MH 12.5", 3520M, 180GB, W7) recently started to frequently overheat. It happens during rather normal operation, such as browsing the internet or playing video on youtube. This causes the fan to run on maximum capacity and computer processes to slow down significantly.  As the image shows below, taken after playing a random youtube video, temperatures of ~103°C are typical.  Should I have it serviced? Please help. Best regards, Matthias

Hey everyone!I ordered a x230 a few weeks ago and i realized i need bluetooth! I know i can purchase a dongle for a few dollars but i rather keep my USB ports free.Anyone know where I can purchase a bluetooth card so i can install it myself? - Or is it advised not to do that. What do you think I should do?

Answer:Lenovo x230 missing bluetooth!

2 options come to my mind1) you can look for bluetooth expresscard (x220 has a slot, so I'm guessing x230 has it as well)2) you can put it in mini-PCIe slot (for the WWAN card or mSATA SSD), assuming it's empty now, ie. you purchased without WWAN

I have a Lenovo ThinkPad X230 (which I love dearly) and have a few question about ports and booting.  I would first like to verify that the port on the left side of the laptop directly above one of the USB ports is indeed an ExpressCard 54.  I have searched the web, but have yet to find a definite answer, and my user manual simply stated "ExpressCard."  Furthermore, I would like to know if it is possible to boot an operating system from said port using an ExpressCard 34 SSD (64GB).  I have the intention of installing openSUSE 12.3 to the potential SSD and be able to boot from it.  I greatly appreciate any help.  I  would post an image of said port, but I am being told the image file is much too large.

I have a Thinkpad x230 laptop and updated the bios through the lenovo tools. After the bios flash the computer would not boot. Under some conditions I get the laptop to beep 8 times (pressing two keys for a while as the power is pressed with no battery). Is there anyone with experience recoverying the bios on an x230? Any advice? This expensive laptop, one month off warentee, is now a brick. Thanks for any help!

Answer:x230 Laptop BIOS Recovery from Update Failure

Hi,

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

I?m sorry to hear that BIOS update failed in your Lenovo ThinkPad X230 and is not turning on properly now.

A failed BIOS update could have bricked the motherboard probably. Since it?s a BIOS chip failure, it would be difficult to get it fixed on your own since the BIOS is soldered to the motherboard. Sorry to hear that your system ran out of warranty.

Best Regards,
Mithun.

Hello and welcome,

I'm on DSL today (1.5mbps) and that's way too slow to view those pictures.  Can you resize them or maybe just post in text what they say.

Even on my cable connection it would take a very long time to see those things. I can't tell if it's just gigantic images or a slow server on your end since I can't download them to check the sizes.

My friend owns a spare Lenovo X230 with Intel i5-3210M CPU and I own a Lenovo X220 with Intel i5-2430M CPU. So I would like to know is it possible to exchange CPUs between these 2 computers but1. NOT losing all data2. I can do it myself with a screwdriverWe don't really care about the ports except for the USBs and headphones. Hello all, I have serious network configuration issue (including both, WiFi and Ethernet). When I enter IPv4 configuration, next time I open again the configuration page, the settings are put into automatic mode (so no pre-entered IPs there). But ipconfig shows the entered IPs. Some times ipconfig also show 3 or 4 different gateways, but opening the Network adapters configuration page, all is set to automatic, so I put it into manual mode, then again to automatic mode and disable + enable adapter, then it'll go to dhcp. This issue is really annoying, I had it before the clean install, it worked some time after reinstall, but now the issue came back again. Using Windows 8.1 ProAll drivers are up-to-date. Any help is really, really appriciated,Thanks in advance,Kunnar

I have a Lenovo X230, running Kubuntu 14.04. When I disconnect the slice battery at the bottom the system resets, it's very annoying. What's worse is that it seems like jostling the system, also can cause it to power cycle. I don't really have a need to remove the slice battery very often, but essentially if I put the laptop into standby, and put it in by laptop knapsack, the system is off after I get where I'm going. Thoughts? I saw somewhere that allegedly, when you unlock the battery, some thinkpad utility gets notified to switch the power, I wonder if the hotplug is a software only solution, and not doable in standby. Steve Ramage

I just received a new compay issues computer: x230 running Windows Pro 64 bit, Office 2010 and an SSD.  Unfortunately, out of the box the pointing devices, either the ultranav or an external mouse and keyboard (MSFT Sculpt), suffer from auto clicking and inability to input text...the text writes over itself...cursor moves forward and then backspaces on itself. The external keyboard worked fine when tested on other notebooks at home.  I did unistall the MSFt keyboard SW on the x230 to see if that made a difference.  Nope.  My IT team remotely updated all drivers, etc. So, everthing system-wise is up to date.  They seemed to have fixed it for about an hour, then it went back to this behavior, including opening multiple instances of applications on its own. The PC is unusable. Thoughts? Halfcalf18

Description of problem: at some point when playing audio, sound will cut out. The levels will still be moving on the mixer, but no sound will come through the speakers or sound jack. It seems that soon after I've closed all sound-producing applications, sound returns. I am 50-75% sure that this is strictly a sound jack issue, as I don't remember being able to reproduce the issue without the sound jack being active when the audio drops out. Frequently, bumping my headphones' cord seems to cause the problem, but other times, the problem seems to happen on a click, a loud sound, or seemingly nothing at all.

I am unsure of how to reliably reproduce the problem, so it is difficult to diagnose whether or not the problem can be reproduced when the sound jack is not active. This isn't common use for me...

I have a 4 year old Lenovo Thinkpad X230 computer.  Since I upgraded to Windows 10 (two years ago?) my computer has randomly shut off with no warning.  There doesn't seem to be a pattern with regard to when or how this happens.  The computer starts normally every time.  This can happen upwards of 5 or 6 times in an hour (although sometimes it can go several days without shutting off). In the last year (since June 2016), the computer has been evaluated by three different technicians on three different occasions (June, October, January).  Each found no hardware issues, no issues with fuzz/dust, no obvious software issues, no malware or other viruses.  Personally, I have explored the answer on the internet and fiddled with the settings relating to sleep mode (among other suggestions) and nothing seems to have worked.  I recently was advised to revert to the original windows 10, undoing all the updates and additional installations that I've put on the computer.  I did this, and miraculously it helped (although it still shut off twice since then.  This was in February).  In the last two weeks, I was forced to upgrade back to normal and the problem has returned.  Additionally, the first person who looked at my computer (back in June 2016), told me that this was aparently a common problem with Windows 10 and that the only way to fix it was to revert to Windows 8.   I would like to not have to do this, if poss... On boot-up it's fine but after a while, I can't listen to music or watch videos at all. Bit alarmed about this but suspect it may be linked to the thunderstorm on Thursday (based in London...), given I woke up to realise the powerboard on my TV had also gone. My laptop is within warranty so hopefully if it's hardware related, I would hope this is covered - in truth, I was reassured about the Lenovo warranty but have never had cause to use it at home or work over the last 6 years of using Lenovos.Any help or guidance would be massively appreciated!Kind regards,Bal

Hi Everyone, I have Lenovo ThinkPad X230, that came with windows 7 preinstalled, as i have VLA from microsoft, i wanted to upgrade to windows 8.1. I did the clean install, set the bios correctly, enabled secure boot, installed with no problems at all, however after installation of system update, it cant find any updates, all other software and drivers are still missing. It found more updates for win 8, but still not all of them. Please help me! I have this laptop few days already, and still didnt get to use it propperly, as i try to get system update to work.. Windows 8.1 PRO x64ThinkPad x2302325 no9 Upgraded RAM to 8GB, HDD to 250 GB 7200 RPM. Just to clarify, i know system update works fine on my network, as my X200 Tablet with windows 7 x64 gets all of them, so it is not a network issue. Regards Lukas

When I took my computer off my desk the other day in order to carry it to my work, I found out that the lid had cracked, just underneath the Lenovo brand name, so the front part of the lid comes off and I can see the screen between. I went into my local Lenovo ThinkCenter and asked them to repair this problem, but they said this kind of damage is not covered by the warranty. I stand by it that this is a case of material weakness and it ought to be covered. The product simply doesn't correspond to what is promised. Also, I'm afraid that the crack may have caused one of the WiFi antennas to break, besides further impacting the structural integrity of the computer. The computer had never fallen, been hit nor has any it been exposed to any kind of impact. It is also only 2 months old. Of course, this is hard to prove, but there are no other signs of damage on the exterior, which would be the case if it had indeed fallen. And this is a Thinkpad, they're supposed to be able to withstand a certain degree of impact anyway. My X200 went through some seriously rough jungle and never had any problem. The reason I had bought another Thinkpad after my X200 - despite a below-average screen resolution and an above-average price - was their superior customer support. If my issue is not dealt with properly, if it cannot be repaired for free and within a couple of working days, this will be my last ever Lenovo. These are business machines and when you pay for 3 years of internat... Read more

Touch screen, pen, and usb/bluetooth imputs work fine but the trackpad stops working several seconds after bootup/log in. I've removed and reinstalled the latest lenovo trackpad drivers which fixes the problem for several seconds and then the trackpad/touch pad stop working again. After every restart again they work for a few seconds and then stop. Are there any other possible sollutions?

welcome to the community!

please check to make sure your trackpad is not disabled in your bios.

for reference, on my t60p, i have the trackpad disabled in bios because i never use it ( trackpoint evangelist here ). regardless, when i'm at the windows 7 login screen, my trackpad is active. as soon as i'm logged in and i've got a windows desktop, the trackpad is inactive. i'm not sure why i have that small window where it works, but there it is, fwiw.

Hi everyone, hope you can help me out with this issue I am having.  I bought a new X230 a couple weeks ago along with the additional 6 cell slice battery. However, I have been having a problem.  When the slice battery runs out the system won't go into sleep; instead when I close the lid on the laptop it turns off completely and when I reboot it all of the programs / app have closed.  It's like the system has a hard power off when that happens. When I reboot, I get this message that says: "Battery 2: There is an error."  Clicking on the replacement options links goes to a 404 page.  (Thanks Lenovo!)  http://screencast.com/t/LLlmqaQ1NJ5k Looking in the Lenovo Solution Center in these cases the secondary battery is listed as "not available".  http://screencast.com/t/PlYdomKZU Anything I should try or should I be getting a new battery from Lenovo?  Is this a common problem?

Answer:Lenovo X230 Slice battery error and problems

Hey there!

Can you tell us what model (machine type) of X230 do you have and what operating system it is running? The machine type can be found on a sticker on the bottom of the unit. This will help me assit you with the errors you are recieving.

Also, have you checked your power manager settings? It is possible to have a PM setting to turn the laptop off when the lid is closed and/or when the slice battery dies.

Hello,  I'm having some trouble with turning on my laptop. The problem originally started when some keys on my keyboard stopped working. I cleaned the keys, restarted my laptop, tried a previous restore point and then did a hard reset after nothing worked to fix my laptop.  After hard resetting, I tried turning on my laptop and it did not turn on. So far, I've plugged in my laptop into the adaptor, plugged the adaptor directly into the wall outlet, and removed the battery and plugged in the laptop. The one thing I have noticed with my laptop is that when I plug in the adaptor, the battery and sleep lights turn on for a moment, then the sleep light turns off, and the battery light will stay on momentarily but then it will blink off after a few seconds. What else should I do? Thank you

Hi,
I'm having a hard time trying to wirelessly connect my Lumia 950Xl to Lenovo X230 laptop. The Connect app launches but gets stuck in with the message "Lumia is about to project". On both devices I have Windows 10 Anniversary Update with all the recent updates, settings enable etc.
The thing is I can connect the phone to my Surface Pro 3, updated as well. So it's just the thing with my X230 (it supports Miracast as well).
Any ideas, what more I could check?

Hi there I posted this on another forum, but thought it might get more of a response on the lenovo forum, so apologies if anyone has read this before.I need a new laptop soon, my T60 is on its last legs, but has lasted a great length of time. I am considering buying either the x220 or the x230, but I live in the UK and the X230 is only available with 2 processor options, the i5 3210 or else the i7. The latter makes it considerably more expensive and probably is too much for what I need. Lenovo is also not letting me upgrade the screen from the default option, as the upgrade is the 3 x 3 antenna (?) so I can't get the webcam.I was originally going to really spec up the 220 and go for that, but I have heard about screen warping problems (my other half has a t400s and has been plagued by the chassis cracking at the palm rests) so I want to avoid that. I know all the other major X220 problems such as throttling have been fixed, one of the benefits of getting a tried and tested machine.I guess my question really is which one should I buy... I am not a gamer, I will be using it for running SPSS, a statistics package; watching movies and streaming etc.Would I be better getting the sale price on the 220 now or do I wait to see if the x230 has more configurations for the uk in the next couple of months? (does lenovo usually increase the options for configuration?) I don't want to lost a good deal on the 220.What do I do? I am very confused! Many thanks for your helpAlison

I've had my X220 for over a year and haven't had any warping problem.

If it is under warranty, call for service, rather than dealing with it. The first step is to unplug it and remove the battery. Press the power button 5 times, holding it for 10 seconds on the last push. Put it back together; plug it in, and try again.

Answer:Lenovo Thinkpad x230 stuck on boot menu

I would need to see it to be sure, but my guess is that the hard disk was logically damaged.  That means the boot record or partition information was wiped out.  It could also be a disk hardware error.  Do you have a backup?

Hello,

This is my first time to post a thread in this community (just bought my brand new x230 model yesterday )

Everything seems working fine, however, every time I open up the LSC(Lenovo Solution Center), it displays as below:

Link to picture
Please ignore the language (OS is Korean version).

Anyhow, the graphic seems black GUI instead of the orginal version.
It seems like something is conflicted each other...Or is it just my computer problem?

To figure out, what I tried was to delete the program and re-install it, however, it happens again (first 2 or 3 times work fine..)

Can I solve this grapih issue? D:

Hello, I recently purchased x230 with Windows 8.I installed Ubuntu 12.0 (attempting to dual boot).  Unfortuantely, Windows 8 is no longer accessible(UEFI error comes up on boot), the restore partition is also corrup ("required partition cannot be found").I attempted to install win 8 PRO that I purchased from scratch.  It failes because the Windows 8 key embedded into the EFI doesn't match the new Windows 8 PRO that I have on DVD. I chatted with Lenovo support, asking to purchase restore DVDs for my laptop - I was told that it's not possible (after going thorugh a couple of people and wasting 1.5 hours on chat_ Please provide some support as it is unacceptable that I cannot install clean version of WIndows 8 and the restore disks are not available from Lenovo. Thank You.

Because much of Lenovo's site is unavailable I am unable go into the configurator or research part numbers to find out if I can buy a Lenovo bluetooth card for my six month old x230. I assume I can but don't know if my configuration has any bearing on which bluetooth card I should purchase (if there is more than one). Does someone have a direct link (that may or may not work right now) to the x230's available bluetooth options? Answer:Error: pxe-e61 media test failure lenovo x230 table

Good day and welcome to the community.

Sorry you're having difficulty.
Unless you're actually trying to PXE boot to a network, the error you're seeing often denotes a problem with your HDD (or SSD if so equipped). Essentially, the BIOS doesn't see the drive and steps through the boot device list until it gets to the PC LAN and tries that.

If you look at the StartUp tab of your BIOS and expand the Boot item (1st image below), do you see any identifier for your HDD (similar to #5 in the 2nd image below)?

Regards.

Hello,

It has been some time since I have been to sevenforums. I have missed you guys!

I was here almost every hour on the hour back when I built my PC and was installing windows7 for the first time. Now I have a new laptop and I would like some expert advice!

I bought a new, to me, Lenovo X230 Thinkpad recently and it came with windows7 installed. I am a person who enjoys simplicity, uncluttered space, and efficiency. In my desktop, and overall in my OS. Are there any tips, or guidelines for trimming down many of the programs and extraneous applications that come along with nearly every manufacturers' computers today? Should I reinstall a clean version of windows7? Is that possible with only the recovery partition on the laptop?

For example, I don't need 2 battery power applications. Either disable or remove the windows battery manager, or the Lenovo. Things like that.

I would also like to remove and backup the recovery partition from the laptop, but it doesn't have an optical drive. Then I could have more space, and only one partition. Not sure the best way to go about this. I have an external drive that I can backup the partition to.

If you want any more information about the current state of the laptop, just ask! I enjoy conversing and learning from the good people here.

Thanks again guys... glad to be back!

I saw few people have problem with this, It was **bleep** hard for me to find what was wrong with my laptop, It just lost its power (instant power-off) from time to time, It was like that for like a half a year, I couldn't figure what was wrong with it. It was totally clean inside and wasn't overheating ,ran all the tests- all was fine, battery also was fine, so is power supply and power module. The thing that fixed it- Was Changing CPU thermal compound, it had dried out really bad and was causing this gremlin.. Even though I didn't believe that it could be the problem because it didn't had overheating issues. Spent $1 on the compound from ebay and the laptop has been fine for over 2months now.In case anyone has the same problem or comes up when searching this post- that's the thing that will fix it even if it sounds weird.

Hi,I have a Lenovo X230, S/N ********, type 2325 , now with 2 years and less than 2 months (with 4 year warranty extension). From new I bought this computer with two batteries, and from day one of the batteries was loose (I never complained because I was making my master degree and then one year erasmus). And the paint on my computer is peeling of, as you can see in photos. From day one this computer is used on a sleeve, and taken with care.My old T410s is like new and never was threated like this one.I called IBM Portugal for assistance (due to a screen problem) and to see this issues. The answer was "yes you have a defect on the paint and in the battery (1mm shorter on the sides!), but we can't do nothing, since we only repair hardware, you must open a claim case with lenovo.Guess what? The email for Portugal doesn't work, the phones provided are for IBM and I can't find a way to claim...I guess this isn't a way to threat someone who pays 1200eur for a laptop. If some mod can open opening a case I would thank.

(I did a search for this topic and not sure where to post this- so please move to the appropriate forum, thanks.) Has anyone download and tried the Intel Extreme Tuning Utility to tweak and overclock the Intel HD 4000 graphics chip? Found here: Intel Extreme Tuning Utility Does the Lenovo Thinkpad in general support this Utility? I stumbled across these links from Semiaccurate.com that describes the process:Overclocking Intel HD 4000 Part 1 Overclocking Intel HD 4000 Part 2 Overclocking Summary I downloaded the latest Intel Extreme Tuning Utility on my X230T and tried to get it to work but after installing and running the program  the window opens and just hangs there- not able to get into the GUI. If it is only Developer or Manufacturer specific and not able to work on Lenovo laptops then I say a mod or someone start shaking the trees and get the Lenovo developers / coders on this! thanks. Rob

Answer:Overclocking: Intel HD 4000 (on Lenovo Thinkpads - example: X230 & X230T etc.)

Hello,

That looks like a utility specific to Intel brand motherboards, which tend to ship with decent cooling solutions that can be easily upgraded.  And, of course, get installed into some kind of ATX case with supplemental cooling.

I would imagine that using such a utility would increase the thermal output of the IGP and decrease its life, as well as that of the surrounding components.  Unless they are specifically designed for gaming, notebook computers tend to have much more limited thermal "envelopes" for the amount of waste heat they can successfully dump, either through passive (radiation) or active (mechanical cooling fan) means.

Hello. I have a Thinkpad X230. I'm trying to drive video to a Samsung LCD TV via the mini displayport, with a mini displayport  --> hdmi adaptor (i've tried two adaptors now). The X230 detects the the Samsung TV when connected, both in the Sound and in the Graphics Properties. You can hear the connect / see the PC screen flash when the cable is plugged in. Unfortunately I can't get any sound or video on the TV. (I just tried connecting to a Dell Monitor and was able to get it to work.) The TV takes HDMI from my Dell laptop just fine on the same cable/input to the TV.The other problem is that in trying to adjust settings, now when I plug in the HDMI cable via the adaptor, the PC screen goes blank, it seems to be trying to make the TV primary, and the TV is getting the signal, so I have to pull the cable out to get the PC display back. Any ideas on setting / adjustments? ThanksAlan
