Lenovo X230 Slice battery error and problems

Question: Lenovo X230 Slice battery error and problems

Hi everyone, hope you can help me out with this issue I am having. I bought a new X230 a couple weeks ago along with the additional 6 cell slice battery. However, I have been having a problem. When the slice battery runs out the system won't go into sleep; instead when I close the lid on the laptop it turns off completely and when I reboot it all of the programs / app have closed. It's like the system has a hard power off when that happens. When I reboot, I get this message that says: "Battery 2: There is an error." Clicking on the replacement options links goes to a 404 page. (Thanks Lenovo!) http://screencast.com/t/LLlmqaQ1NJ5k Looking in the Lenovo Solution Center in these cases the secondary battery is listed as "not available". http://screencast.com/t/PlYdomKZU Anything I should try or should I be getting a new battery from Lenovo? Is this a common problem?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Lenovo X230 Slice battery error and problems

Hey there!

Can you tell us what model (machine type) of X230 do you have and what operating system it is running? The machine type can be found on a sticker on the bottom of the unit. This will help me assit you with the errors you are recieving.

Also, have you checked your power manager settings? It is possible to have a PM setting to turn the laptop off when the lid is closed and/or when the slice battery dies.

I have an X230 running W8 with both a 9-cell and a slice battery. When running on battery power alone, when the slice battery power drops to around 0% and is still attached to the laptop, even though there is 100% power in the 9-cell battery, sleep mode no longer works.  I can even try Fn+F4 or manually setting the system to Sleep using the W8 Metro command screen, but no good--the laptop just shuts off and I lose all open work, and have to restart each time.  Because of the nature of my work I cannot remove the slice battery as needed--it must remain attached even when its power is low. Note that there is only one "battery" option under Advanced Power Settings in Windows 8--and there is nothing to indicate whether that one battery is the 9-cell or the Slice.  Also note that there is no Lenovo Power Manager option in Windows 8, at least not on the X230. I am sure one suggestion is that I turn off the warnings for Low Battery under Advanced Power Settings.  But that won't work for me, because I often run down both batteries--and I have been saved many times by the W8 popup "Battery Power Less than 10%" that shows up on the screen when the slice is at 0% and the 9-cell is at <10%.  A previous post on this forum suggested downloading an Intel Firmware update, but the link to that update is for a Win 7 / Win XP software. http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/T400-T500-and-newer-T-series/T410-Slice-battery-Sleep-problem/td-p/40577... ... I am looking to purchase the 19+ slice battery for my X230. But the Part Numbers cause me confusion when i try to order them. I see two part numbers  0C13380 / 0A36280 in some listings for the same battery . Though the lenovo site itself as of now lists the latter (0A36280) . A lot of external websites seem to display the former part no (0C13380) for this battery model.  I tried to speak to a lenovo rep, he said they both had similar features, but couldnt give me any further details or feature comparision I was wondering if anyone here could tell if there was difference between the two and guide me to the latest and the appropriate one for my X230 (with the following config i5-3320, 4gb RAM , 320 gb hdd, IPS screen) Thank you

Hi,I've got a Lenovo X230 with the 19+ Slice Battery. When I drop the X230 into the 19+ Slice Battery, the laptop reboots. When I eject (via Windows menu) the 19+ Slice Battery, then remove the X230 from the battery, the laptop reboots. Once it is running, it is fine, and the battery shows up in the power manager, but it is annoying to not be able to connect and remove the battery whilst the laptop is running. Is there something wrong with my battery? Does anyone else have this issue? Thanks.

I recently bought a 28++ spare battery from Lenovo but I have questions about its charging mechanism. I have a Windows 8, T530 computer.  Does it pull charge from the main battery or spare battery first?  If the computer runs on the spare battery first, does it completely drain the spare battery before going to the main one or is there a specific percentage after that the computer pulls charge from the main battery? Also, is there any way I can adjust these settings?

Answer:Lenovo 28++ Battery Slice

@felixgp,If I remember correctly based on my training about 2 years ago. The system is suppose to use the power from the slice first then only move to the main battery. The system will know how to switch to the main battery if the slice is running low. Adjust settings? Nope .... Don't think so.

Hi all. I have a T420 with a 9 cell regular battery and a 9 cell slice battery. All are just under a year old. On occassion (not all the time), I get an error that just says there is an error with battery 2 and the computer won't recognize that the slice battery is plugged in. This has happened maybe 6 times in the last 3 months and otherwise the slice acts perfectly fine. Any ideas? If it matters, my primary battery after just under a year is operating at just under 78% capacity.

I recently purchased an x230 and everything is perfect but the battery fit.  It moves up and down slightly.  I know there are many posts in the lenovo forums for all different models that the battery fits lose in "x" model and solutions of putting paper / foam / tape to make the battery fit tighter.   What I'm wondering is if anyone has actually had the problem fixed by lenovo.  I've read a few posts where a user has had the base piece of the case replaced (where the battery fit's into) and that has solved the problem.  I'm still within my return period on my x230 and am awaiting a call back from tech support to see if there is anything they will do but I don't think I will keep it if they can't fix it.   I'm just curious has anyone actually had luck by replacing the base piece.  From what i've read a replacement battery hasn't worked for anyone.  Also, I know everyone says its by design for thermal purposes but I haven't actually seen any official confirmation of this from lenovo.   Thanks.

Answer:Battery Loose / Battery wiggle in x230 and LENOVO ...

As a follow up, I'm just curious if this is a widespread issue?  Anyone have loose battery in their x230 / x220?  I'm not talking about it falling out...but just a few millimeters of wiggle room.  Basically when i pick mine up or place it down, I can feel / hear the battery move.  I'm just trying to get an idea if this is a real problem or thats just how every thinkpad is.  I called support and they are sending someone to replace the base panel and we'll see if that fixes it.  I'll update this post when it get's replaced.   Edit* I also asked the lenovo support rep if they had heard of this issue and they said no, never.  I don't see how this is possible as if you do a google search for thinkpad loose battery there are many results.

I've bought the Lenovo X230 with the broken battery (the PM showes 68% charging and no more, asks for the battery replacement). I've tried 3 different good-working batteries from X220 which were supposed to work on X230, but they don't. When starting the laptop with that battery, it stops with the information:" The battery installesd is not supported by this system and will not charge. Please replace the battery with the correct Lenovo battery for this system. Press the ESC to continue".  And after pressing the ESC key, it starts to work, but the PM still writes that the battery is not correct and it doesn't charge. What could it be?

Answer:Lenovo x230 battery problem

Hi,x230 doesn't support the batteries of old 29 series (x220 did). Only hw protected batteries 44 series are being supported by x230 (and 19+ series, external).Batteries of 29 series can only be discharged in x230.Try to perform the original (x230's) battery reset using Lenovo power manager feature.

I have a Lenovo X230, running Kubuntu 14.04. When I disconnect the slice battery at the bottom the system resets, it's very annoying. What's worse is that it seems like jostling the system, also can cause it to power cycle. I don't really have a need to remove the slice battery very often, but essentially if I put the laptop into standby, and put it in by laptop knapsack, the system is off after I get where I'm going. Thoughts? I saw somewhere that allegedly, when you unlock the battery, some thinkpad utility gets notified to switch the power, I wonder if the hotplug is a software only solution, and not doable in standby. Steve Ramage

I have got it to do this twice so far, so looks like a problem.  My wife always puts her X220 to sleep versus shutdown.  Sleep still uses some power apparently which is fine.  It looks like it is draining only the primary battery even though the slice battery is connected. The issue is that with the primary battery drained and the slice battery connected, the TP will not power up.  Plug the power adapter into the slice battery and still no power up.  The slice battery charged to 100% with it pluged in, but the primary battery would not charge.  Plug the power adapter into the X220 directly and let it charge for a moment, then everything works as it should even if you then move the power adapter back to the slice battery. So if the primary battery is dead, the slice battery and charging the primary battery through it seems to stop working under this scenario. Obviously not a huge deal since we now know what causes this, but maybe someone wants to fix some day. I am using BIOS 1.16 and have been for a while.

Answer:X220 Will Not Charge When Primary Battery is Dead with Slice Battery Installed

hey DevItHere, have you tried updating your bios and at the same time uninstalling the power manager for your X220 and reinstalling it ?if not, please do so

Hi,I have a Lenovo X230, S/N ********, type 2325 , now with 2 years and less than 2 months (with 4 year warranty extension). From new I bought this computer with two batteries, and from day one of the batteries was loose (I never complained because I was making my master degree and then one year erasmus). And the paint on my computer is peeling of, as you can see in photos. From day one this computer is used on a sleeve, and taken with care.My old T410s is like new and never was threated like this one.I called IBM Portugal for assistance (due to a screen problem) and to see this issues. The answer was "yes you have a defect on the paint and in the battery (1mm shorter on the sides!), but we can't do nothing, since we only repair hardware, you must open a claim case with lenovo.Guess what? The email for Portugal doesn't work, the phones provided are for IBM and I can't find a way to claim...I guess this isn't a way to threat someone who pays 1200eur for a laptop. If some mod can open opening a case I would thank.

Similar to why some people don't like to charge laptop batteries to 100% and in line with preserving battery life, I also rarely let my laptop batteries hit a rock bottom 0%. By default the laptop was set to hibernate if the battery reached 5 or 6% but I raised this lower limit to 10%. (i.e. auto-hibernate at 10%) I heard the reasons why it is bad to let batteries completely drain to 0. Main one being something to do with the battery cells falling into a "deep slumber" and simply not waking up unless you send the laptop in for a "shock treatment". Like the "gate" at the entrance to the battery cells don't even have enough energy themselves to even open the "gate" to allow energy to go into the cell itself. Anyway, is there a way to stop the slice battery from reaching 0%? So that once the slice battery goes down to 10%, for example, the laptop will switch over to use the main internal battery?

Solved!

Go to Solution.

Answer:laptop allows 39+ slice battery to reach 0% before switching to use internal battery.

There is not currently any way to do what you request.  But draining the battery to 0% isn't really 0% capacity of the battery. The 100% charge of the battery is normally 4.2 volts. The 0% charge state is really 3.0 volts. So when the battery reports 0% it is not really zero volts because the cell must be kept at higher state of charge for the health of the battery. The battery firmware is intelligent enough not to let the battery discharge to a point where the battery health is impacted.

I recently received my 39+ slice battery and, after attaching it to the x1, set the charge thresholds for both internal and slice batteries to stop at 90%. (I used this threshold on the internal battery and hoped to set up the slice battery to 90% also.) i.e. start charging when below 86% and stop at 90%. Unfortunately I have been unable to maintain both batteries at 90% charge. After extensive testing, updating drivers, software, firmware, bios, resetting battery meter and various charge threshold combinations, etc., it seems that the slice battery won't charge past 80% unless the internal battery is allowed to charge to 100%. If I set both batteries to charge until full (100%), this happens:1. internal battery charges to 80%, then stops.2. laptop switches to slice battery. charges slice battery to 80%, then stops.3. laptop switches back to internal battery and continues charging it to the 100% threshold.4. finally laptop switches back to slice battery and finishes charging it to 100% also. However, if I set both batteries charge threshold to stop at 90%, this happens:1. internal battery charges to 80%, stops.2. slice battery charges to 80%, stops.3. internal battery starts charging again until it reaches the 90% that i set, stops again.4. and then, that's it....lol.. The slice battery does not continue to charge until 90%. it just gets stuck at 80%. At this point, both Windows and Lenovo power manager keeps switching between: saying that the slice b... Read more

I have my lenovo x230 laptop set to sleep when I close the lid. When I close the lid the "sleep" icon on the back of the screen lights up. But the batter will not last through the night on sleep mode. Within five hours or so, the battery is completely drained and I have to plug in and boot up the system. I've never seen such poor batter performance during sleep mode on any other laptop I've ever owned.  Another thread in this forum blames the USB port that allows you to charge mobile phones/etc. during low-power states and recommends disabling the "always power on" option fo this USB port in the Bios settings. I've done so, be it doesn't seem to have helped. At least my laptop still will not make it through the night in sleep mode.  At this point, it seems my ownly option is to use sleep mode only when the laptop is plugged in and hibernation mode when on batter power, which is disappointing. I've never had to worry about this in the past with other laptops.  Perhaps/probably related is the fact that the lenovo ThinkVantage Power Manager (v. 7.16) hangs at the splash screen when I try to open it, so I've been trying to manage the power through the windows control panel power settings.

[still using these specs]Okay. After 1 month of usage, the display started to have some problems. From the left to right, the 3/7 part of the display is changing in all the colors while using. It depends on what color is the page opened. In may, the display started to have that problem again, but I've read on your forum that I need to put the display on 60Hz and on High performance mode to fix it, and that's what I did. At the beggining of June, the problem was back, and it is still on 60Hz and high performance mode.3 days ago, my laptop started to make another problem ; CHARGING.It doesn't want to charge.  If I just plug in, it stays with the battery on 0%, and it doesn't open because of the missing electricity, but I've realised something. Nobody likes a DOA machine or accessory.  I don't see much activity here from X1 owners which probably means there aren't very many, or they don't have any problems. If I were you, I'd probably put the battery through a maintenance cycle (full charge, full discharge, full charge) with Power Manager.  If it fails after that it's a warranty return and replacement in my mind.

If you re-installed Windows and this problem still happens, I'd say there's a strong possibility that your fingerprint sensor has failed and needs to be replaced.  Even if the device looks OK in Device Manager, this really doesn't mean much.  All it means is that Windows can talk to the USB device that hosts the fingerprint sensor, but the fingerprint sensor itself could still be malfunctioning.

Some things that can help confirm hardware problem:
1.  Shut the system off, does fingerprint green LED flash slowly?  If so it means that the sensor contains some fingerprint templates so lets try to clear them.
2.  Turn the system on and press F1 to enter BIOS setup
3.  Go to the Security menu and choose Fingerprint, then clear the fingerprint sensor.  You should see a message about success or failure.  Failure definitely means HW problem.
4.  If you see a message about success clearing the fingerprint sensor from BIOS, then shut the system off again.  The green LED should not be flashing anymore because you cleared the sensor in BIOS.  If the green LED still flashes, then it means HW problem because the fingerprint templates were not really cleared.

So try the above steps to try to confirm the HW problem, or just call service in your country and request help.

I, like many others, bought the X220 in large part because of the reputed battery life.  I didn't actually expect to get 20 hours of usage with the slice battery, but I figured 15 or so hours was a reasonable expectation.  At the moment my screen brightness is at 0, the Power Manager is set at Maximum Battery Life, the battery meter reads 99%, and I supposedly have 8 or so hours of battery life remaining - with the slice attached.  I'm using Chrome right now with 3 tabs open so I don't get it.  Do I need to (re)calibrate my batteries?  Am I missing the optimum settings?  Any help would be greatly appreciated in terms of maximizing my battery life.

Answer:X220 Battery life w/ Slice

You should have around 8 hours on the 9-cell (no-slice) alone...Open Power Manager while on battery under normal battery usage conditions, and go to the Battery tab. Look for wattage. This is the amount of power currently consumed.Chrome tends to be a power hog, so I'd recommend going with IE9 or Firefox Aurora. I just got the slice 27+ battery for my w520.  I've got the stock 170W power supply.  When I first got the battery (today), I plugged it in and my power options showed 100% charge on primary and 37% on secondary. It also showed "Battery NOT charging" while I was running which seemed kind of odd. Now, I'm home and can experiment some.  I find now that when I have the slice 27+ installed, the w520 does not charge at all.  the charging light does not come on (this is with the system off).  My watt meters shows no current or watts.  When I take the 27+ off the w520, it will charge again. I've tried doing a bios to default and that did not help. Any thoughts? I hope I don't have to send my computer in for repair.  I have not done any bios updates on my w520 and it was from one of the early batches.  I'm always scared to do bios updates for fear of bricking my computer at an inconvenient time (like always) Thanks

Answer:W520 problem with slice 27+ battery

There is a "switch" underneath the 27++ slice. Did you turn it into green when you plug the battery in? The switch also works as a safety lock. You can't put it into a ThinkPad unless you switch it off. Also, the charging process charges the primary battery to 80% of its capacity, then it charges the slice to (maybe 80%, I cannot recall), then it comes back to charge the 20% in the primary and finishes up. ThinkPads cannot charge the two batteries simultaneously due to power source wattage constraint.

So, I know Lenovo has a Q/A saying that draining a battery is fine, but conventional wisdom says that Lithium Ion batteries should not be fully drained as it can shorten their lifespan. I have a new battery slice and notice that it does drain to 0% before using the other battery.  On another computer I have (a Dell latitude XT), which also has a battery slice, the slice drains to 3%-5% and then uses the other up, before taking either to 0%. So my quesiton is, does Lenovo have some kind of protection in place for these 0% drains of the battery slice, and thus their Q/A page? Thanks!

Answer:Battery Slice draining to 0% question

0% is not fully drained per se, it is not a deep discharge despite the 0% reference point. Lenovo battery's 0% is still a good way above the discharge state of the lithium battery. It is only unsafe if you discharge the battery to 0% and left the battery there uncharged for couple of weeks, which may cause the battery to go into deep discharge state. i have been using the battery slice on my X220, X230, X220t and X230t for nearly 6 months now, and there is no problem with the current discharge profile. Also, the slice battery is Lithium Polymer, so it is more tolerant to this of discharging condition then the lithium ion battery.

I was disappointed to find out that there will not be a battery slice offered for the T440p. I know Haswell gets great battery life already, but more importantly to me is the increased typing angle the slice provides. I've tried to use my T420 without it, but I'm so used to it it's hard for my hands, wrists, and fingers to adjust. Anyone know something like the slice that could be used in asimilar fashion (of course with no battery functionality?

Just a quick question:Will the t420s be available with a 9-cell battery slice, like the t420 is?Cus im not sure if i wanna go with the t420 or the t420s, but if i can only get ~5,5 hours out of the t420s, id absolutely go with the t420(10h withe the 9-cell, and up to 30 with the 9-cell battery slice just sounds too good to pass up on!). Thx in advance

Answer:Will t420s be available with 9-cell battery slice?

Lenovo claims 10 hours with the 6-cell and the 3-cell expantion bay battery. My math says more like an eazy 5 hours or more. If you want mobility go for the t420s IMO.  If you need serious power (cpu and graphics) and also mobility go for the t420 as it will have the better resolution and the better battery life to support a loaded porcessor and full graphics card for quite some time.

I have a Dell Latitude E6530 and having a problem I have never seen before. I have two 9 cell batteries in it, one as the primary and other as a slice for the bottom. When the slice battery reaches 1% the laptop abruptly cuts off instead of switching to the primary battery. However, I can unplug the slice battery while the laptop is on with no problems occurring. I have ran all diagnostics tests I could find and each time everything passes. I have been told that the problem could be either the BIOS outdated or the motherboard. All drivers have been updated and the most current BIOS is installed. I would like to know if the motherboard is indeed the culprit or to see has anyone else had this problem before I buy a new motherboard. Thanks

Last September we purchased 5 slice batteries for our X230 systems.  One of them went bad about a month and a half ago, and I opened a warranty replacement ticket with Lenovo but they can't find a replacement battery to ship me (it's been out of stock for about 6 weeks now).  They shipped out an incorrect battery at first, and I am getting the run around with various warranty, tech support, shipping, and status departments (I've been transfered to them all, have to explain my situation over and over again, only to get more confusion each time). The battery I have has TWO part numbers printed on it, but they can't seem to ever cross reference these part numbers with the battery.  The place we ordered these batteries from (CDW) have a Manufacturing Part number which is a completely different part number and which is NOT printed on the battery itself anywhere.  Then, I just got off the phone with another person at Lenovo who gave me a slightly different part number, and then another part number (5 so far).  How can there be so many different part numbers for the same battery and how can Lenovo not be able to cross reference them? On the battery itself, I have two part numbers (again, why two???)FRU P/N:  42T4967ASM P/N:  42T4904 Then, there is a manufacturer part number (not listed on the battery anywhere) 0A36280 Then there is a fourth part number they gave me which is 42T4903 Then they gave me another part number of 4... It is rather disconcerting to have the laptop stop and go blank when the battery life indicator says there is more than 6 hours of life left. My T420 has a 55+ main and 27++ extended battery.  If it is using the main battery for power, when the main battery reaches 0%, it will fail to switch to the extended battery and die.  It doesn't just shut down, it stops.  Windows doesn't like this.  If the machine is using the extended battery for power, it can successfully switch to the main battery when the extended battery reaches 0%. There appears to be no "approved" way to force the laptop to use the extended battery first.  I've only had this laptop a couple of weeks, but in my experimentation, the laptop preferentially uses the battery with the lowest percentage first. For normal use, I've programmed the extended battery charge profile to stop at 95%, This will get the laptop started on the right battery when both are connected, but doesn't help if I'm out and about using the main battery and want to extend by adding the extended battery. The only method I've found to force the laptop to use the extended battery when the main battery is at lower capacity is to just remove the main battery.  Of course, to do this, I have to either shutdown the laptop or put it in hibernate.  Then, remove the main battery and attach the extended battery.  Restart the laptop.  So far, I haven't had any problems with this method. This way when the extended battery dies you can remove it from the machine and either put it in your bag or charge it.

This is the thinkpad t520 combo that is supposed to get you 24 hours of battery life. From my experience it's completely possible providing you don't do much, and keep the screen at lowest brightness (only good for me in dark areas). Fortunately I don't need a full 24 hours of use, so I can run it at full blast(screen brightness still set kinda low though) with my music apps and get 12+ hours. I bought a samsung 470 low power ssd and didn't see much difference in batt-life from the 250gb lowest option harddrive. I have a T520 (4240, BIOS 1.28) with the 55++ primary and 27++ "slice" batteries. With the primary battery on about 80% charge and the slice battery down to about 8% charge, I closed the lid and the machine went to "sleep". I didn't used it for a few days and, when I eventually opened the lid, I found the power had been lost and the machine had to be booted from cold, losing my previous session. During that few days, the slice battery had dropped to 0% charge and then the machine lost power. It never switched over to the primary battery, which still had about 80% charge. Is this the expected behaviour? It doesn't seem right to me.

I have seen great results with the standard 6-cell and the 6-cell slice attached to my x220t which I've had for about a month now. It is my understanding that litiium batteries should NOT be discharged to full capacity, that anything around 20% or less will lead to significant loss in life of the battery. My main concern is that the way the dual-batteries are set up is for the slice to fully discharge to 0% before the computer switches over to the standard "main" laptop battery. Isn't this harmful to the battery and will lead to significantly lower battery life in a short time? If yes, then is there a solution from lenovo for this issue? The batteries are all isted as having "over-discharge protection", but I can't seem to find any information about what exactly that is. Any insight on this would be great, particularly from lenovo staff / engineers themselves.

Answer:x220t with 19+ slice battery discharge concern

I think that there are measures in place to ensure that the batteries are well managed. In all, batteries are comsumables, and therefore will decrease in power over time.i understand your concern that you want to take good care of your batteries and I believe that there would be sufficient measures in place to ensure this. I have an inversely proportional question, that is I am concerned about if the 65w adapter is sufficient to charge and run the X220 slice battery, and the onboard battery as well as run the computer?

I just bought a 9-cell 97WHr slice battery for my Latitude E6430 because my normal battery only gives me 3 hours of charge on a good day.
When I went to connect it to the E-Port slot on the bottom of the computer, it did not register as a battery on the system, and whenever connected, the battery symbol on the top left of the keyboard blinks red repeatedly. What does this mean and how can I fix it?
Also, when I try to connect the laptop charger to the port on the slice battery, the same thing happens. Can someone please help me with this issue?
If it helps, my laptop runs a 2.7GHz Intel Core i7 processor with 16GB of RAM, and the OS is Windows 10 Pro.

Dear community, I have a Thinkpad T410 with the following specs: Intel i7 620m4gb RAMNvidia nv3100mWindows 7 Professional x64 I have problems if I go to the sleep mode. The next time if I power up the T410, Windows ask me if I will boot up normaly or in the secured mode. So this means, that the T410 or the battery definitely interrupts the current, and they look that they haven't power. But this doesn't happening every time. Hi all,
I have a M4800 with dual battery setup.
Both batteries are made in 2016.
When I charge laptop on without working on it, the total capacity of the will only charge up to 85%.
Nevertheless, when I unplug one of the batteries, it doens't matter which one, then the batterie charges up to 100%. When I charge the slice battery with a separated power supply, it also charge up to 95%.
When all batteries are fully charged, then I can see in my battery monitoring software that they are charged up to 106%, as they are charged to their design capacity, and that the "full charge capacity" is at a lower value.
I have tried firmware A18, althoug then my computer will not boot up with dual battery setup. I get a windows bluescreen with (Inaccessible Boot Device), So i returned back to A16

I bought a T520 (4240) a few months ago and, like most people around here had the same issues with pulsing fans and, on applying BIOS 1.28, CPU throttling issues. I'm not sure if the latter one is fixed properly yet, but I also have a problem with the battery charging thresholds that has me stumped. I have the 55++ and 27++ 9-cell main and "slice" batteries. For a while I let them charge up to 100% whenever connected to AC, but then I read that a 100% charge level is not recommended for day-to-day operation. I use Fedora 15 Linux 99.9% of the time on my T520. I wanted to set the battery charge thresholds to avoid the 100% charge level, but the "tp_smapi" Linux driver doesn't work for the T520 (yet). I read somewhere that if I were to set the charge thresholds with the Lenovo Power Manager in Windows 7, that they would work in Linux as long as the laptop was not completely powered down when switching from Windows to Linux (i.e., use a warm boot). Well, it worked. In fact it worked really well: I could even power down and remove the batteries and something, somewhere would still remember that I wanted to start charging the slice battery when it dropped below 35% and stop charging it at 80%, even when running Fedora 15. Having used the machine for a few weeks, I found that I used it on battery power a lot and liked to "top up" the batteries over night. The 35/80 thresholds didn't really suit my working pattern. So, back in the Power Manageer in Windows, I changed ... Read more

Answer:T520: Slice battery charging thresholds stuck

A quick update on this: today it seems that the primary battery has also decided that 80% is enough, even though the threshold I set was 88%. This is under Linux, where I believe the embedded controller (EC) enforces the thresholds written to it by Power Manager under Windows. The third post on this page about work on a driver to set battery charge thresholds on Linux mentions that the EC might ignore writes to the battery charge threshold registers if bit 7 (somewhere) is not set. Is Power Manager writing the information to the EC incorrectly? Is that why my charge thresholds appear to be stuck? It worked the first time, but I've updated Power Manager a few times since then and now I cannot change the thresholds.

Good day and welcome to the community.

Sorry you're having difficulty.
Unless you're actually trying to PXE boot to a network, the error you're seeing often denotes a problem with your HDD (or SSD if so equipped). Essentially, the BIOS doesn't see the drive and steps through the boot device list until it gets to the PC LAN and tries that.

If you look at the StartUp tab of your BIOS and expand the Boot item (1st image below), do you see any identifier for your HDD (similar to #5 in the 2nd image below)?

Regards.

We discovered this problem in early August with our new X220 tablets.  We have a 1-to-1 tablet pc program.  About 75% of our freshmen class has experienced this issue.  The tablets are running on battery power with the extended battery slice.  The units will spontaneously just power off.  Not a clean shutdown but just a power off.  The batteries are in various states when this happens, most of the time both batteries are almost fully charged.  I've witnessed this dozens of times with the students in my classes.  We found out that this also is affecting another high school in our consortium.  We bulk purchase our tablets with several other high schools.  The other high school that is experiencing this issue has the same model and the same manufacturer date 6-11-2012.  We estimate 200-300 units are affected between the two schools.  Lenovo product engineers are working on finding the source of the problem, but we currently have many frustrated students and parents.  Just curious if anyone else has seen this issue with X220 tablets and slices that were manufactured around the first part of June?

Answer:Sudden Power Off Issue on X220 Tablet with Battery Slice

My X220 tablet with a splice battery has the following issue: If you don't set the laptop down very gingerly while holding the external  splice battery firmly against the laptop, it shuts off entirelyYou then have to take out splice and main battery and put them back in and rebootPower mode set up is hibernateIf you use sleep mode, it shuts down if it shifts around a little while in backpackFor such a rugged design, you wouldn't expect this to happen.  Any ideas on how to correct this? thanks

Hello all, I'm having this interesting problem with my batteries. Whenever I discharge the normal 9-cell, as soon as it reaches 40% remaining it immediately jumps to 6%, and proceeds to hibernate within minutes. It seems to happen whenever I charge both the 9-cell and the slice together, though I have not yet tested charging them separately (doing that as we speak). Also worth noting is that when charging with both batteries, the status jumps from 6% to ~24% immediately. I can't tell whether this is a software glitch or if some of the cells in the 9-cell normal battery are dead. I will try charging it without the the slice and update accordingly. In the meantime, any & all help would be appreciated. Some more details:T430 Win7 Pro x64Intel i7, 8GB ram, 180GB SSD + 500GB Ultrabay9-Cell normal battery and 9-cell slice Please let me know if anything needs clarification. Thanks fellow thinkers! -DB UPDATE: I just tested it, and it does seem to be a dead cell (or 3) in the battery. It just jumped from 43% to 6% again.

This is usually a sign that there is a bad cell in the 9-cell battery. As you say, try to recharge with just the 9-cell and see if there's any diiference.

How old is the battery and how many cycles has it been through?

I have the lenovo X230T model with the standard 6 cell battery and a 6 cell slice When I have the systenm down to like 5% battery life overall and I plug in my charger I noticed that the standard 6 cell battery charges at around 30,000 mWh which is normal and good  but the slice only charges at a max of 10,000 mWh.  Both batteries have about 60,000 mWh each so the standard 6 cell takes about 2 hours but the slice is actually taking about 6 hours to fully charge. There has to be something wrong with this or some setting is off.

Answer:Lenovo X230T Slice charging problem

the 6 cells slice battery is a lithium polymer type. I am guessing, this trickle charging helps to increase battery longevity. I haven't really looked at the charging time of mine 6 cells slice, but it does take a long time to charge them. i usually charge them overnight. I have three of them.

I am facing the below given 2 problems with the battery of a brand new lenovo U41-70 i5 Red model.

1. The plugged in but not charging error. Some suggestions in the web ask the user to remove the battery and change some stuff in the device drivers, but in my model the battery is not removable.

2. The battery dissipates a lot of charge while in complete switched off mode (not in sleep, nor hibernated). I have also disabled the windows fast boot mode from the power options, but doesn't work.
To give an estimate, in approximately 9 hours of shutdown (and the charging removed) the battery dissipates from a full 100 to 70%.

Note: I have updated the laptop which came with Windows 8.1 to Windows 10. Hence, the system is running on windows 10 now. The laptop is 10 days old.

I shut down the computer and turned it back on several hours later, or at least I tried to. No go!! Plugged the laptop in and got a flashing battery error. Battery is showing 78% charge left, displays the battery voltage however AMPERAGE IS AT 0.00%. Called IBM/Lenovo and opened up a case, however all they can do it 15% off the cost of the battery.I am past the 1 year warranty on the battery. What I do not understand it why they are covering certain batteries and not ALL batteries that have the issue... Update: Well the battery IS PART OF THE RECALL, however I am past the "6 month" extended warranty coverage.Edit2: Battery only has 98 cycles... Message Edited by draco2527 on 04-14-2009 06:33 PMMessage Edited by draco2527 on 04-16-2009 01:04 PM

Hi guys, I have had my x230 thinkpad laptops for two months now. The laptop suddenly just switches itself off without any indication of needing charging, there was no beebs sounded nor a flash or  blink indicating battery low, it just suddenly dies. i.e switched off. The only way of bringing it back up of course is plugging the power lead back in until it's fully charged. I'm currently running Vmware vsphere ESXi and  Citrix Xenserver, the question here is: - Is there a way of setting the battery indicator / button to beep perhaps via BIOS when battery is low ? - shouldn't the battery indicator button i.e. the one by the left show orange or blink orange before die-ing out ? - I understant I'm running some kind of Linux / Cent OS i.e. being vsphere or Citrix Xen would this affect the battery indicator not to show before dieing ? I also have windows 7 professional currently running on another x230 laptop, I will test to see whether the battery indicator button on that one indicate anything before dieing. Any ideas renderd is appreciated.

Answer:x230 Battery indicator button does not work nor indicate battery low before dieing

Hi,

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

I?m sorry to hear that your Lenovo ThinkPad X230 suddenly turns off without any low battery indication.

Update Power manager and Power management driver to the latest version and check the status of the battery in Power manager.

Try doing a battery reset. It involves charging your battery to 100%, and then discharging it completely to 0%. Once that?s done you charge it back to 100% to complete the calibration.
Please note that battery reset is a time consuming process. So I would suggest you to do it overnight. Change the power plan settings to ensure that system doesn?t enter sleep or hibernate during the reset.
Refer this document to understand how to perform a battery gauge reset.

Hope this helps!

Best regards,
Mithun.

The other day I was using my x230 on battery (Sanyo 9-cell) , and the level dropped suddenly from 40% to 6%, so I decided to do a battery gauge reset. The charging has been stuck at 99% for a couple of hours now and I'm concerned that it will never reach 100% so that the reset moves to phase 2 where it discharges the battery. I've noticed before that the battery never went past 99%, but it seemed like a minor detail, but for the sake of resetting the battery gauge, it seems essential that it reaches 100%. Any insights on this? Should I leave the reset functionality running in hope that it knows what it's doing? How many hours can it take to go from 99% to 100%? thanks Vicentiu

hi, I'm exactly similar problem.  it is really annoying. I have sent it to service centre once, they simply don't know and just reset the unit by pressing small hole at the tablet, the they do full recharge.  some how it works. later, at the same day occurred again and I tried replicate same process but no luck. then I follow instruction from one of the suggestion in this forum, it solved. it was 2-3 mth ago. now, after I upgrade to windows 8.1, the problem came back. all of this problem created from lenovo power management software together with their metro apps which setting what power management should do. the real culprits when you have setup some setting, then you undock or dock the tablet.. so I believe the software got confuse between the current setting with two unit (keyboard and tablet) especially if you ever play around with setting to extend the battery life which the power management will allow the battery to be charged not more than 50%. what the bad idea ... may not so bad but bad execution... we dont want this stupid geniuses ... we just want our unit working as when we purchase it. your latest driver is suck... big time... u should fire your engineer. .. pay 2k but got monkey ....

I recently purchased a Precision M6800 (probably one of the last ) and now want to add an external slice-type battery. I did some searches on DELL web sites (my local Belgium one and some international ones) and on the www. This resulted in several product codes for what seem to be the same, or at least similar products: 451-11831 / 451-BBGJ / 312-1351. Can anyone tell me if those are all the same, or at least compatible products ? And more importantly: is any of those (or all 3) really the slice-type battery I am looking for to attach to the docking connector of my M6800 ?

They are the same battery, except the 28++ includes hardware authentication which is necessary to work on the new systems such as W530.  Either battery will work fine on your W520 which doesn't authenticate the battery.  27++ is going end-of-life so it's very possible if you order 27++ that you will actually get 28++ along with a flyer in the box explaining this.

Two month ago I bought a leveno G500s laptop. It is still working fine but there has been a slight problem I found. When I bought this machine I saw using HW monitor the wear level of the battery to be 2% at the beginning. So I was just browsing the internet looking for an answer and found it to be normal. I read from somewhere ( I don't remember which website ) that if I always tend to plug the power cable on and use my laptop, it is better to set the Lenovo Power Management tool to Optimal Battery Life ( something like that, sorry translated from German ), which puts the battery charge to 60% and doesn´t charge anymore. This actually, what I have read, helps prolonging the battery life. So for 2 months I have been doing it the same and recently I found out to be my battery's wear level increased by 19%!! Can anyone explain why is it so? Or is it the shop gave me a bad battery?

I recently downgraded my Lenovo G560 back to Windows 7 as my Windows 8 crashed citing a WerFault.exe error. I tried a clean install of the same Windows 8 OS but the error continued to recur. As a researcher, I had little choice but to downgrade it to Windows 7 (In order to keep working) and order another copy of Windows 8 (I'm set to upgrade it again in two weeks time hopefully). However, after reinstalling all my drivers and programs, I realized that my battery was indicating that I should consider replacing it (flashing x icon). However, the battery charges fine and the Energy management Drivers continue to function properly. My Lenovo solution Center indicates that my battery's health is good. All these happened when I did a clean install of Windows 7 Ultimate downgrading it from Windows 8 pro. Is this a software or hardware problem? Any help will be appreciated.

Answer:Lenovo G560 battery problems

hi onyanchaerick,

The battery "consider replacing your battery" message that you're getting is probably an incorrect software alert as explained in these articles:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2293330
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/consider-replacing-your-battery

What you can try is to:
1. Download the latest patches and updates from microsoft (which includes Windows 7 SP1)
2. Fully charger and rain your battery from 100% to 0% respectively for 1-3 cycles.3. Check this solution on a similar Lenovo model.

Hope this helps.

Hello, as of late I have been experiencing some problems with my battery and could not find any solutions as I serfed the web. The problem is that the battery life of my computer has decreased drastically over the past couple months. I have had this computer for a month or two, and when I first got it, it had about six and a half hours of battery life. However, right now, it only has about two hours, even on lowest brightness and settings, with any other programs closed. Is it possible that the battery is damaged or is it something else. 2) Could you look into Task Manager Start up and see if any weird programs are starting up, that may consume extra battery?
3) Can you disable Lenovo Apps such as Harmony, OKO etc? (These apps are useless and use up ttoo many resources, sometimes)
4) Are all your drivers updated?
5) What do you do when your battery only lasts 2 hours?

A couple days ago I left my laptop plugged in to charge overnight. Before I went to sleep I noticed my laptop screen brightness flashing (like someone was plugging the charger in and out rapidly) but didn't know what was going on so I turned the computer off and went to sleep. When I woke up the next morning I found out the my laptop had not been charging all night and was now dead. I checked the cord and found nothing wrong with it and checked the connection to the outlet and the laptop and found nothing wrong with either. So later that day I took the laptop with my to school and plugged it into several different outlets again with no success. I left it alone and didn't touch it the next day. The next day I went to school again and tried a different outlet and this time it started charging! It got up to about 40% before the screen started flashing again (like the charger was being plugged in and out rapidy) and ceased when I unplugged the charger and the flashing ceased but so did the charging. Again even when I plugged in the charger it wouldn't work. I again checked the cords and tried several outlets (including the one I previously plugged it into and it worked) and nothing happened. Right now my laptop is plugged into a new outlet turned off and when I plugged it in the batery light on the side started flashing red and when I turned it on it was still not charging. I've done some basic troubleshooting but nothing has worked thus far. I could really use some help.

Hi ATilly11, Welcome to Lenovo Community Apparently your AC adapter cannot charge your machine, so please make sure you are using the right AC adapter.  Referring to your machine maintenance manual guide your AC adapter should be 65W and if you use a lower wattage it cannot charge the machine.  Please check the following:  1. Check all the connection part of your AC adapter (power cord, the AC adapter male connector to the machine) and make sure all are healthy  2. check your machine power connection port and make sure is healthy.  3.Swap your AC adapter to another machine and see whether it can charge the other computers 4. Use another same AC adapter for charging your computer and see whether it charged.    Regards, **If the issue has been resolved please, mark me as solution provided to help others find the solution easily and click the Kudos.**

Now I can't find that option to change this settings. By the way, when I set that option I had Win8 but now I have updated to Windows 8.1. Maybe in Windows 8.1 there is no such options.Thanks.

Answer:Battery problems in Lenovo s230u

Battery Health Mode setting in Lenovo expands battery life of notebook. Currently Battery Health Mode setting has been removed from Lenovo Settings. To get Battery Health Mode setting, you have to download and install Lenovo Settings Dependency Package from below link:http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/downloads/ds031946

I bought my flex 3 14" just over a year ago. A few month before my warranty expired, the battery stopped working. It would not charge past 0%. I had to have it pulgged in in order to be able to use it, but as soon as I unplugged it, it would die. I sent the computer into the lenovo shop to be repaired, and when it came back the battery was working... for 24 hours. Now my computer has trouble charging up. It stays at it's current battery level. Also, it will charge for half a second, not charge, charge, not charge. This causes my brightness to go up and down. Unfortunately, my warranty has expired, so I can't send it again (idk if you even can do that). The only thing that I could think of that might be causing this is some damage to the wire. Right where the wire leaves the AC adapter and heads towards the laptops there is some fraying in the rubber casing around the wire and I can feel the wire itself. I don't want to buy a new charge just to find that the charger wasn't the problem. Please help.

Answer:Lenovo flex 3 14" battery problems

Hello Finn3Thanks for using the Lenovo forums. Are you able to try to charge with an alternate charger, sounds like it might be just a faulty charger at this point.

Try a static discharge for this, it may help to resolve the issue or at least get rid of any built up static on the motherboard.(If the battery is internal, please just skip the remove/replace battery steps.)1. Turn the unit off2. Remove the battery and the Mains adapter3. Press and hold the front power button for 30 seconds4. Replace the battery and the Mains adapter5. Turn the unit on as normal

Hope this helps, let us know how you get on.==================================================================================Did someone help you today? Thank them with a Kudo! If you find a post helpful and it answers your question, please mark it as an "Accepted Solution"!

Hello all, Just got a new Yoga 2 Pro from BestBuy, immediately noticed some problems. 1. Is the fan supposed to be so loud? I'm only running chrome and it still has a high pitched whirring sound, and it is too loud for a library setting. 2. Battery refuses to charge past 45%. Says "Plugged in, not  charging" when I click on the battery icon. How do I force it to charge to what it is supposed to? Is my yoga 2 pro just defective, or are these common errors?

Answer:New Lenovo Yoga 2 Pro: Multiple Problems (Fan, Battery)

I made the switch to Firefox yesterday because chrome was eating up my CPU (chrome has really gone downhill lately). Go to taskmgr and sort by CPU usage. See what is cranking that fan on.Also, go to the Energy Manger software and disable the battery conservation mode.

For some reason, the batteries don't last too long on these T60/T61.Our company uses Lenovo notebooks purchased through CDW exclusively and we have multiple batteries that either failed/doesn't hold a charge/or barely holds a charge that are near the 1 year or slightly past the 1 year mark.Is this a common problem among lenovo batteries.  We use some HP and Dell branded notebooks as well prior to using lenovo, but those notebooks don't seem to have the battery issues that lenovo has.Your input will be greatly appreciated.Thank You,Joon

Answer:My Lenovo y410 battery problems, ask for helps??? :(

Hi ahmadmujiburrah, Welcome to the forum.

If you take the battery out, does the laptop run okay with just the ac charger plugged or does it shut off by itself .  Run it for awhile on just the ac and post back the results.

You can google it on how to go about it in case you don't know how.

The ProblemsWon't start without being plugged into charging cableIf charging cable is removed or power outlet is turned off, the computer shuts down immediatelyBattery level stuck on 38% and will not increase.Screen flickers constantly The StoryI have had my Lenovo Yoga 3 14' 940m for a long time now and was very satisfied with it, up until a few days ago. Suddenly the computer wouldn't start. I tried holding the power button for +10 seconds and nothing happened. Then I plugged the charger in and it started up. However when i got to the desktop the battery level was at 38%. I let it charge for about an hour and when i got back it was still at 38%. Furthermore the screen was constantly flickering. In some applications the flickering is worse than i others, ex. Google Chrome flickers a ton but in Adobe Acrobat it is a lot less. Is there any solution to this? Help would be greatly appreciated

Answer:Error Battery on Lenovo Z480

Hi darkking, thanks for posting and welcome to the community. Based from your post it seems this is more of a hardware issue rather than some we can solve with a software. At this point what I can see is you may be facing with a battery failure. In order to diagnose further on the matter I would suggest you to contact our service team to confirm. Sorry i couldn't be much of a help but as this point your case will require our service team intervention to confirm that it is not a hardware failure.Regards

Hello! Could you please help me. I have X1 Carbon for about 1,5 years. So warranty is over.Today when I tried to power on my PC without AC power adapter, it failed. Then I pluged in AC adapter - windows loaded successfully, but Battery Icon says that "Battery is 18%, it is plugged in, but not charging". When I tried to unplug AC power, my PC turned off immediately. So battery is not working at all. I tried to install Lenovo Energy Management. It says, that I have battery error and suggests to replace the battery. I tried to temporarily remove the battery - no success. Again pc wont start without AC power adapter......What can I do also?  Battery was in perfect condition (80% wear level), so it would be really dissapointing to replace it...  PS: when computer is off, and I plug in power adapter, battery indicator blinks the following way: 3 times green, pause, 2 times orage, pause, 1 green. It seems like there is battery error, but probably there is some way to reset it. Thanks.

I have a Lenovo Thinkpad T440 and the batteries are showing battery error in the Power Manager. I am unable to update my BIOS to see if that will solve it and my batteries don't seem to be eligible for a Firmware update. My Warranty is also expired. Anyone have any suggestions? error is showing up on both batteries  (Front internal and rear removable). Laptop works fine when plugged in but will not power on if it does not have a charger connected. Batteries don't charge at all (With or without it being powered on) All suggestions welcome. Would prefer not to have to get a new battery set as these ones are relatively new and shouldn't be throwing this error. I do not have a spare Thinkpad I can test the batteries in or that I can test a known good battery from.

Hi, I own a Lenovo X230 with an I5 3320. I noticed that the CPU stays at 1,2 ghz when I remove the Battery and the Charger (default 65 Watt)  is connected. This i a kind of annoying because I normaly remove the battery my I use a Laptop in my at home. But with just 1,2 ghz the Laptop is kind of slow so the battery has to remain in the Laptop.I set every energy option to maximum performance but the CPU only uses a multiplikator of 12.I also took a picture of the problem:[URL=http://www.imagebanana.com/view/boihv3vt/lenovoproblem.png][IMG]http://img6.imagebanana.com/img/boih...

Answer:X230 oly 1,2 GHZ when Battery removed

hi.

the cpu running at 1.2ghz when running without an installed battery has been part of the design for a long time. my 1.8ghz A31p does that and pretty much every ThinkPad i've had since has done the same thing. at least of those i've tested. i don't think there is any way to change this behavior short of hacking bios/ec code. highly not advised.

so, if you don't want the speed cap, leave the battery in. if you're trying to extend the life of the battery by removing it, set recharge thresholds in Power Manager accordingly instead. i set mine to not begin charging until the battery drops below 40% and then to recharge fully.

hth a bit.

I ordered last friday my x230 with an I5 and 9 cells battery.   I've read many things on the web, but I would like to know what  is real. With this configuration, what is the battery life? ( reading movie, text, internet)  Will I get some minutes with a ssd? Thanks

Mbp I5, 160ssd, 8go ram

Answer:[x230] battery life

Hi lemarseillais,

Check out this specs page: ThinkPad X230 Laptop

Under battery life: "Up to 24 hours with optional Lenovo 90W Ultraslim AC/DC Combo Adapter"

Higher drain activities include watching videos, multitasking with many browser tabs or windows etc. An SSD typically uses less power than a HDD due to the fact that it has no moving parts so yes, that could be more efficient for you.

I hope that helps!

Ed

Hi, I just purchased a new 6-cell battery (44+) for my X230. When I install it and restart, I get the message "The battery installed is not supported by this system and will not charge." After starting Windows I can see that the battery is in fact not charging.  I tried to make sure to buy a 44+ battery that I was told was compatible with the X230. Any ideas what went wrong here? Thanks,Will

Answer:44+ battery not working with X230

Good day and welcome to the community.

If I might ask, did you get the battery from Lenovo or from a 3rd-party seller claiming "44+ compatible"? Also, if you see it printed, what is the P/N on the battery? There are usually two, prefaced with: FRU P/N and ASM P/N.

Regards.
