X1 Carbon Touch WWAN (Carbon does not support Verizon and Carbon Touch has no 3G at all)

Question: X1 Carbon Touch WWAN (Carbon does not support Verizon and Carbon Touch has no 3G at all)

Hi, I bought my Carbon Touch looking forward to activating with Verizon and replacing my current 3g ipad. After hours trying to figure out how to enable broadband, I find out that apparently the "touch" models don't offer it. Can someone at Lenovo explain how they can have promotional materials like the page at http://www.lenovo.com/products/us/laptop/thinkpad/x-series/x1-carbon-touch/ that says "ThinkPad X1 Carbon Touch" and "Embedded 3G Connectivity" while not offering it at all? Then, I thought I'd return the Touch and get the regular Carbon, but I'm seeing now that, despite all of the reviews and promo materials that say otherwise, it doesn't support Verizon either. How can this be true? Just about every review that I read about these laptops is flat wrong on these topics. What's the scoop? I tried calling technical support a couple of times and they were of no help.

Preferred Solution: X1 Carbon Touch WWAN (Carbon does not support Verizon and Carbon Touch has no 3G at all)

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: X1 Carbon Touch WWAN (Carbon does not support Verizon and Carbon Touch has no 3G at all)

jprny,

Welcome to the Support Forums! I can definitely understand your confusion and I know you must be frustrated. I can clarify that the WWAN is optional in the X1 Carbon, from the same link you provided you can open the ThinkPad X1 Carbon Touch Ultrabook Specs it states there is Optional 3G WWAN.

Here is the the X1 Carbon Personal Systems Reference (You will find the X1 Carbon Touch on the very bottom)
This shows the different models of the X1 Carbon and what specifications are included. Unfortunately, I only see AT&T as the 3G provider on the standard models. From the Parts List it looks like there are other options to choose from that would make it a configured to order machine. You may want to contact Verizon to see if any of the WWAN cards work with their network.

I would recommend contacting the after sales team:

I currently own an x1 carbon (2nd gen) 20A8 where in windows 10 settings | systems | about | device specifications it says "Pen and touch: Touch Support with 10 Touch Points". I'm looking at upgrading to an x1 carbon (4th gen) 20FB/20FC model where the ebay listing shows windows 10 settings | systems | about | device specifications it says "Pen and touch: Limited Touch Support with 2 Touch Points". Any insights as to what exactly a touch display with "Limited Touch Support with 2 Touch Points" implies about that 4th gen model number and display behavior in windows 10 as compared to what i have now that shows "Touch Support with 10 Touch Points"?

Answer:what does x1 carbon (4th gen) "Limited Touch Support with 2 Touch Points" imply

Hello and welcome,

Only going by what I read below - the Gen 4 doesn't have a touchscreen option so that may be referring to the touchpad.

I recently tried to buy an X1 Carbon with WWAN but found the option no longer there on the web. Could someone from Lenovo please help me find out: Whether and how I can place a custom order with the WWAN capability? Is this temporary or X1 Carbon WWAN is discontinued? Or, put in other words, should I wait for / expect the option to re-emerge if I cannot do it today?

Answer:X1 Carbon (no touch) WWAN option

Hi bessel, and welcome to the Lenovo User Community!

Suggestions:

Call Lenovo and ask. Sometimes the sales people can get you things which are not in the online store.
Pick a standard model from the Personal Systems Reference and search for a vendor with it in stock.

Hope this helps!

So one of the main reasons I bought the x1 carbon was because I wanted a laptop with 3G built in. I hate messing with mifi or hot spots. All the promotional materials stated this would be Verizon capable and I even confirmed with two Lenovo customer service people that this would be Verizon capable before buying. I just found out today it is not, I know there is a thread addressing the lack of Lenovo broadband, but nobody from Lenovo has addressed the lack of Verizon support. I'm starting to feel like lando calrisian, in that this x1 carbon deal keeps getting worse and worse.  Is there any near term chance of Verizon support, or should I just send it back now and be done with it.

Answer:X1 carbon Verizon support?? Or Verizon wwan??

Will we see a Qualcomm GOBI card that supports Verizon LTE?  What about the Verizon 3G CDMA/EVDO network? I really don't care about the brand and maker as long as it works. I would like an embedded option, so would my wife.  I have spoiled her with the Verizon chip in her T400.  I would like to spoil her again with a X1 Carbon, but we would really like to use the Verizon network for data if possible. Could one of the Lenovo employees clarify what is available today in that regard? Thanks, Thor

I was considering getting this laptop , probably leaning toward the touch version.  But display quality is really important to me, I do much software evelopment so i stare at thescreen a lot of course  I know this is not IPS panel, but more like the TN panel used in MacBook.   How does it compare to Macbook dispay (non retina). is it, worse, the same, or better?

Answer:Display quality of X1 carbon / X1 carbon touch

I haven't spent much time on a newer MBP, but it's very equivalent to a MBP a few generations back, but is brighter. It's for sure usable, and while IPS would be prefered, I can easily live with it daily.

I've been looking for a small, easily pocketable charger. Often the space occupied is mostly by the power cords, so I've been considering wall chargers where the brick directly plugs into the wall, such as the Targus APM69US - but I can't find any that have the new rectangular Lenovo tips. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Does anyone know whether the displays of either the X1 Carbon or X1 Carbon Touch currently available on the Lenovo website are IPS, and if not, what panel type they are? The sales reps have told me conflicting things. On the product configuration screen, the display types are listed as 14.0" Premium HD+ (1600x900) LED Backlit Display, 720p HD Camera, No WWAN and 14.0" MultiTouch Premium HD+ (1600x900) LED Backlit Display, 720p HD Camera. No WWAN respectively. It's my understanding that in the past, the phrase "Premium HD+" has meant IPS. Also, if someone from Lenovo is reading this, could you please ask somebody in engineering who actually knows?

Answer:X1 Carbon / Carbon Touch Panel Currently IPS?

No, it is an outdated low resolution TN panel again with better than Lenovo usual almost zero contrast (below 150:1). Quote from Lenovo shop:Multitouch Premium ? Optimized for Windows 8, 10-finger touch on select ThinkPad models allows for fluid tablet-like interaction. Intuitive navigation enables browsing, scrolling, using apps, even gaming, with a simple swipe of the touchscreen. A capacitive touch panel trigger actions immediately, and the cursors follow your fingers around the screen without any perceptible lag or delays. Review http://www.notebookcheck.net/Review-Lenovo-ThinkPad-X1-Carbon-Touch-Ultrabook.89901.0.htmlLP140WD2 TLE2, TN LED, Contrast: 885:1

would anyone happen to have a picture of the x1 carbon lcd lid thickness next to the carbon touch? maybe lead_org i know you have access to many thinkpads and i am a fan of your flicker thank you for have made such a great resource! looking to do a custom mod where i fit the regular carbon lid on my multi-touch lcd to get the battery indicator lights and also have the red "i" in the thinkpad logo glow with a mutlitouch pannel, but concerned about the depth for the lcd and thickness... anyone have any experience or ever try it? any input would be greatly appreciated.

does anyone have a side by side comparison of the lids so i can get an idea if the touch screen has more depth or if its just the rubber border that snaps in around the lid that is thicker? does any IT manage out there have access to snap a pic of a non touch and touch x1 one side by side? im looking to at least get a visual but i only have access to my x1ct... any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi guys, I'm interested in buying a Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon Touch and a docking station for it.Before I buy it, I would like to know first whether I can use simultaneously the integrated laptop screen and 3 additional external monitors, all in extended mode (using the docking station, or other DisplayPort - DVI adapter) As far as I have read in the technical specs, it has the Intel HD Graphics 4000, but no information is given about how many external monitors this GPU supports. Has anyone tested this? If yes, what's the result  Thanks in advance and have a great day!Mihail

Answer:X1 Carbon Touch Multi-Monitor support

Well, it seems nobody knows that...I guess I won't buy it any longer, since I definitely need multiple monitors and apparently the Dell Latitude laptops do support them simultaneously...

Hi, I have the Lenovo X1 Carbon Touch, new as of april 2014, and since last week, the touch screen has stopped responding to touch inputs. Before this it has been working and behaving perfectly. I have tried to turn the laptop entirely off and on, reboots... No effect. The screen simply acts like it never was touch. The HID driver is present and claims to be working. I tried to reinstall it and it does so with no errors or warnings. I also tried to reinstall the monitor and graphics card drivers. The Tablet control panel icon offers a calibrate option but Reset is disabled. The calibrate doesn't help because it doesn't respond to touch. System says it has touch with 10 finger inputs. Windows 8.1 Update 1, Enterprise SKU Any advice is welcome. UPDATE! Touch works when I lay the screen out flat. But if I return it to any angle, it stops working. Is this related to LayFlat mode or is there a connection fault in the display for touch input so only when I lay it flat it has contact? Software or hardware?

For the past several weeks I've experienced a very annoying problem with my ThinkPad.  Whenever the laptop goes to sleep and resumes the touch screen goes... crazy. It starts registering multiple inputs across the touchscreen and the only thing that seems to resolve the issue is a restart. Sometimes, upon restart, the touch screen works normally, other times it does not work at all.  Has anyone else experienced this issue? I've seen this issue described for other Lenovo models with fixes, but none for my model.  Under the hardware ID in device manager, this monitor is a LEN 40A4.  I'm running Windows 10.  This is my third Thinkpad X1 Carbon, not because I love to upgrade, but because these machines seem to only last one year before something major breaks.

Does anyone know the following about the 2015 X1 Carbon 2560 x 1440 screen? Does the touchscreen still have the same hazy film that prior generations had?  We have a couple of the older ones at the office and that hazy film makes it very fatiguing to read text.  Does the non-touch have the film?  Is the non-touch clearer and easier to read text on? Are the screens matte or gloss? I know lenovo doesn't recommend removing the film but it appears many people have removed it.  Is there any detriment to removing the film? Thanks in advance.

Answer:X1 Carbon 2015 (Gen 3) touch vs non-touch screen clarity

I have a 2015 X1 Carbon with the 2560x1440. I don't notice any hazy film over the screen (but I have heard that Lenovo coats it with something). It's a glossy screen but probably a bit less glossy than some others I've used. That said, the screen is fairly dim (I think max 270 nits) and I need to leave the brightness nearly all the way up which eats away at battery life. But at that setting, it's terrific for me.

Answer:X1 carbon 3rd gen, buy touch screen or no touch?

It is a matter of personal preference. I prefer the touch on windows 10 or 8.1. I prefer no-touch on windows 7. Even with a touchscreen. I still use the mouse more often than touch.

Anyone have any ideas about what to do with the super-sensitive touch pad?  At first I welcomed it because it's much larger than the pad on predecessor versions.  But then I found that it was so sensitive that the computer took on a life of its own.  Folders merged into other folders because I evidently touched them in file folder; web pages magically got smaller or larger; programs unforeseeably got closed or opened.     Is there a solution?

Answer:X1 Carbon - touch pad way too sensitive

Hi HomeChicago!

It seems that with every new generation of touchpad there are more new features - clicking, tapping, jesturing, dragging, multitouching... to the extent that they are confusing to operate. You can learn about and disable features you don't use in the Mouse Control Panel, under UltraNav>TouchPad>Settings.

Hope this helps!

I am having several challenges with my Touch x1 i5: whenever I close the lid, and bring it back to wake, the touch screen is no longer responsive until I do a full shutdown. when I open the lid, I often have an issue with the screen being black and no way to fix it unless I shutdown first. sometimes the touch screen over-reacts and instead of scrolling up or down , it zooms into the web page. are these common issues?

So few days ago after downloading the hidemyass vpn , the laptop started to have many touchmarks (like someone was remoting the laptop and touching everywhere) but they appeared for a few seconds and stopped and this is still hapenning. I even asked the vpn support and they said that the vpn system doesnt work that way and told me to erase all the remote softwares( i dont have any) and do an antivirus scan. I had eset nod32 and ran the full scan but there was nothing , and it still happened and we were not able to use the screen touch option on the laptop because of this. So I erased eset nod32 and purchased kaspersky to check if it will be better and did the full scan, rootkit scan and erased all the possible exploits, but still the touchscreen is nit working and we can sometimes also at the start of the system see the touchmark bubbles, is it a virus or another kind of issue, thanks I need help with it

No, Lenovo still refuses to provide Lenovo branded versions of 4G/LTE modems for EU region. You need Sierra Wireless AirPrime MC7710 that supports 800/1800/2600 MHz used in european countries or similar half-size version.

Hi guys, I'm seriously thinking about switching from my 5-year-old X61 to the new X1. However, I've got some concerns about Win8 Pro (compatability issue, I'm not sure whether some of my old scientific programs would be happy with Win 8), which currently is the only option on X1 Carbon Touch. Can I downgrade it to Win7 professional myself after I get the computer with the so called "downgrade rights"? Can I upgrade it back to Win8 Pro when I think is proper (and to take advantage of the touch screen)?  In fact I can use my USB drive to install Win 7 Enterprise, and I can activate it using product ID provided by my university. But I wonder whether I can reinstall Win8 Pro and retain all my files and settings later. Will the installation of Win 7 wipe out the Win 8 Pro preinstalled in the HDD? Does anyone have some ideas? Thanks a lot!

Will the installation of Win 7 wipe out the Win 8 Pro preinstalled in the HDD? Does anyone have some ideas? Here are a few answers and they don't address anything to do with the license. 1. If you have Windows 8 media, you can reinstall Windows 8 at any time.  The activation key is burned into the BIOS/UEFI implementation and it will be detected and used by Windows 8 setup. 2. Most likely Windows 7 will run fine, but frankly, you might as well try Windows 8 first and test your apps to see if they run well. 3. As to one of you last questions, if you try to install Windows 7, it will most likely mess up the existing Windows 8 installation and boot settings.  That includes the recovery partition.  Great care needs to be taken to implement another OS in a dual boot fashion.  If I really wanted to go that route, I would probably install Windows 7 in a "boot from VHD" manner. That would likely preserve the existing environment and partitions. Whatever you do, make a backup of the working environment BEFORE you start going down any of those paths.  See http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/detail.page?DocID=HT076024 or buy a good product like Acronis True Image Home 2013 to backup the drive.

I do not know the answer to your question. I had win 8.0 pro installed.I downloaded the win 8.1 pro from Technet (I have a Technet subscription.) and installed Win 8.1 Pro. The only major change I made was to use a feature of 8.1 to boot directly to the classic desktop instead of the modern Tile interface. I am very pleased with the improvements made from 8.0 to 8.1.

About three months ago I got a new X1 Carbon Touch. I was using it this morning, and closed it so that it would go into sleep mode. I've been trying to boot it back up with no success. Whenever I hit the power button, the light surrounding the power button and the keyboard backlight turns on for about half a second before turning off again. I have tried plugging in the power chord, holding the button, hitting the reset button, holding the reset button (both with the power chord plugged in and unplugged), holding both the power button and reset button at the same time, pressing the power button while holding the reset button and vice versa, all with no success. If you have any suggestions with what to do, I'd love some help. Thank you.

Dear all,I have a problem with Wi-Fi connection on my X1 Carbon Touch (3443-CTO). The connection often drops when the computer wakes up from sleep. I need to "disable" the Wi-Fi adapter to re-connet to a wireless netwrok. This is quite troublesome.Anyone knows how to fix it? Thank you in advance.Best, viviparuz

Answer:X1 Carbon Touch - Wi-Fi Problem

Hi, viviparuz

There are a few things you can try to hopefully fix this issue. The first is to navigate to Control Panel ? Device Manager and open the tree for Network Adapters. Right-click on your Intel wireless card and select Properties. Once here, select the Power management tab from the top-right. Make sure that the box next to Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power is unchecked. Select OK and Apply to save the changes.

The other thing that may help is to navigate to Control Panel ? Programs and Features. In here, find the Intel Management Engine utility and uninstall it. Some have claimed that this has helped their wireless internet issues dealing with intermittent disconnection.

Hope it helps,
Adam

http://download.lenovo.com/parts/ThinkPad/x1_carbon_fru_bom_20130211.pdfThink I found the right parts list What is the 3 letter country code Lenovo use for UK - Normally its GBR but that doesn't seem to be the case here. also what is the difference between keyboards with CHY and without - I'm guessing backlighting or something ?Also if anyone wanted to chip in what the CRU ID's of 1 or 2 mean ? I'm guessing this infact means Keyboards ARE customer replaceable by the looks of things.

Trying to find this (announced with the X1 Carbon Touch): "The new optional slim 65W AC adapter -- measuring just 17mm thin and weighing 53% less (235g) than the standard AC adapter -- is being offered with the new touch screen Ultrabook." It's not on the Lenovo website unless I'm missing it. Would my asumption it will also work with the X1 Carbon (non-Touch) likely be correct?

Answer:New Adapter for X1 Carbon Touch?

the 65 watts should something similar to the one that is used on the ideapad yoga, which uses the same connector type.

Hi, I got a 3rd Gen Carbon X1 with a touch screen. Now the screen is broken and I am afraid I have to replace a new one. Is it possible for me to replace a non-touch screen instead of a touch one, since I found the touch function didn't that improtant for me? And if I have to get a touch screen, how much it would be?Thanks for the help!!

Answer:Carbon X1 touch screen replacement

It isn't just the LCD that is different. The panel, bezel, lid, cable and hinges all are different.  If you want to repair with non-touch, the best choice might be to look for a used, complete assembly

I just got this great X1 Carbon Touch with i7 and Win 7 Pro.  When I close the lid or even manually triy to put it to sleep, it shuts the screen off, but the machine stays on the first time it did this I threw it in my bag and when I pulled it out 30 min or so later it was almost to hot to touch and the fan was screaming.  I had to manually shut it down.  It generally does not happen frist time after boot, it is generally the 3-4 th time or more. So very unpredictable.

Answer:x1 Carbon and Touch i& models with 16gb of RAM

Hi,

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

X1 carbon touch and non-touch versions come with a maximum of 8GB RAM. You can refer this document to check which configuration you would like to have and choose the Model number accordingly.
Also, the RAM is not user upgradeable since it is permanently mounted.

Hope this clarified your query!

Best regards,
Mithun.

I'm looking for this keyboard for the X1 Carbon Touch (3443CTO):  I believe it's sold in Taiwan, because it has the Bopomofo typing system, but I would mainly need it for Cangjie. So far, I think I've narrowed it down to two FRUs: 04X0479 and 04Y0819. Is it possible to install a Windows 7 X1 Carbon keyboard on a Windows 8 X1 Carbon Touch, ie. are they cross-compatible? Unfortunately, I don't know which one to purchase or how to order the keyboard. Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

The kb between the X1C and X1CT is the same. You have to go to the Lenovo repair centre in Shanghai, they should be able to get one ordered for you.

Hello I have a new X1 Carbon, the one with Haswell.  The touch screen gets VERY dusty.   And wiping it with my finger doesn't help.  The dust just sticks to the screen.   Did Lenovo forget to apply an anti-static coating on this display?  My friend who has a recent-model T440 touch screen does not have this problem. karlo

Answer:Very dusty touch screen on new X1 Carbon

You could just wipe it away with a cloth or a wipe meant for dust. I mean, cleaning a screen with your fingers isn't exactly ideal. But because I'm not knowledgeable on any coating or whatever, lets consider external factors; - Do you keep your screen open all the time? (e.g. When you go to bed.)- Is your home well ventilated?- Is there air flow blowing directly at the vicinity of your laptop?- Does your workspace get just as dusty? I don't have the touch model, and I don't know if it makes a difference, but my screen is fine.

Just set up my X1 Touch and USB 3.0 Dock.  Cleaned out a lot of the bloatware and updated drivers.  After using lenovo's update utilities I checked the system for driver updates with SlimDrivers a free utility at www.slimwareutilities.com .  It showed 10 drivers still out of date (Intel, Bluetooth, sound card, etc.). Updated those and everything is running fine.  However, I have had one problem since I opened the box, the machine will not reboot properly. When I or a installations program restarts the system it freezes on the Lenovo screen. The only way to reboot is a hard reboot using the power button or using or shut down in the settings menu.  This is very frustrating.  This is my 5th thinkpad over the past 10 years.  I had the same problem with my T42 and was never able to fix it.Any ideas?

hi all, I have a Lenovo X1 Carbon 3rd generation which has Windows 10 installed. Since I?ve purchased this laptop the touch and the "red nipple" doesn?t work properly.  When i switch on my laptop, the touch pad / red nipple works for approx 5 seconds and then it freezes. Occasionally it will work for a lot longer before it stops. I have to use a USB mouse every time ... - I?ve checked and made sure i have the latest drivers from the Lenovo website. Ive also used the "system update scan" and made sure i have all the latest drivers (Synaptics ThinkPad UltraNav Driver for Windows 10 (64-bit) - ThinkPad) - I?ve uninstalled the drivers and then re-installed them- The touch pad is visible in the control panel and i can disable the red nipple etc.- I?ve formatted my hard  drive and re-installed Windows 10- I?ve tried a different set of mouse drivers Does anyone know how to fix this? I really enjoy using this laptop and have always just carried a USB mouse with me. I would really appreciate your help.

Has anyone else noticed a small bulge on the top casing of their X1CT? It's right where the wi-fi and CPU indicator lights are, above F8-F11 keys. I think it may have something to do with the SIM card slot in the back because the casing is not flush and seems to bulge up.I am wondering if this is a normal design feature or if it's just my unit.

New to Lenovo.  Long time Dell user and was not unhappy with service or product. I was ready to order a new X1 Carbon to lighten the load I carry for work and thought would be great to match my Think Vision monitor I have been using in stead of just another dell.  Then I began to find that a touch screen was going to be available so I waited to make the purchase. Multiple times a day I researhed if purchase was available.  Finally ordered just a couple hours after visible on web.  In fact not there at 11pm but was at 4am.   Initial stated shipment on 12/17 and that was great.  Then moved to 12/20.  That also still good because felt possible for christmas.  Then moved to 12/24 and that was not good since no way it might arrive.  Then moved to 12/27 not possibly not here before the new year and I may have moved locations and not able to actually receive it.   I am a contractor that travels 50% of the year and will not be at same shipping location in Janurary. Is this normal for Lenovo?  Never had this type of a challenge with purchases from Dell.  Normally buy and arrive in 2 - 3 days. Does Lenovo continue to move/delay on releasing to public or do you think I may have a close to deliver date? Why would Lenovo say 17th and I suspect that my ordering within the first 4 hours should not have been placed in back of production list and with very few options available it is not like a cust... Answer:X1 Carbon Touch; Production Schedule

It is hard to say. It seems that all computers are built to order in China even if you don't deviate from the basic configuration. There are some horror stories about orders being delayed for months but on the other hand - after an initial ordering glitch - my two laptops (x230) appeared on my doorstep about two weeks after I ordered them - not too bad if you consider transit from China. Lenovo sales does seem to have a habit of overpromising and underdelivering so I'm not sure that I'd recommend them for anyone without lots of patience. They also seem to advertise stuff well before they are able to deliver. While my computers are fine to date, I dread the thought of dealing with Lenovo warranty service if something goes wrong. In retrospect I should have bought Dell.

About a month ago I bought a Carbon X1 Lenovo laptop, and am running Windows 10 on it. Initially the touch screen worked fine. But now, the touch screen does not register at all. Does anyone know what may have disabled it, or how I can fix the issue?

Answer:Touch Screen for Carbon X1 not registering at all

Dear hmasters,

Welcome in lenovo community,

Lenovo did not release all windows 10 drivers for the X1 Carbon yet, so if you are facing problems with windows 10, it might be better to go back to the previous windows.

Or try to go back to the previous windows >> run the recovery image >> install all the windows updates >> upgrade the windows to windows 10,

If faced the same issue again, you may wait one or two months till lenovo test and release the compatible drivers,

Also you can use the below link to follow the drivers update.

Answer:Windows 7 on Carbon X1 with touch control?

Hi Scewbedew,

Welcome to Lenovo Community!

As per you are query we understood that you are looking for downgrade the Operating System from Windows 8.1 to Windows 7 on your ThinkPad X1 Carbon.

Yes, you can downgrade the Operating System to Windows 7, you can use bootable USB flash drive with Operating System or you can use bootable Windows 7 DVD using ?USB External DVD drive?.

All the basic function will work including touchscreen option with Windows 7 on ThinkPad X1 Carbon.

After installing Windows 7, just download ThinkVantage system update utility and install it. Through ThinkVantage you can update all the required drivers and application for your system.

Note: Before doing any changes in the Windows 8.1 Operating System, I request you to create the recovery media of that.

Hope this helps!

Best regards,
Hemanth Kumar

So, one can swipe from the right to left on the carbon touch pad and bring up the windows 8 charm menu.  I can do this and everything works as expected.  However, ever so often, the windows 8 charm menu would just popup.  I thought I was triggering this with my palm, but then I noticed a bad defect;  The mouse buttons all stopped working. So;1. Charms suddenly popup2. All mouse buttons (the dedicated ones and the touch pad ones) are now not working at all.3. The mouse pointer still works using the trackpoint button, and the touchpad pointer still works.  All mouse button clicks no longer work.4. I have to esc out of the charm menu and hit ctrl-alt-del and arrow down to the sign out menu.5. signing back on fixes the problem.  Reboot is NOT required to fix this. At this point I don't know if it is a lenovo problem or windows 8 problem.Has anyone else seen this. Thanks

Answer:X1 Carbon Windows 8 Pro touch pad problem?

Hi, ghstahl

I would try uninstalling the current driver by going to Device Manager and opening up Mice and other pointing devices. Next, right-click on the device and select Properties. A window should appear. Navigate to the Driver tab and select Uninstall... from the bottom. Once this driver is uninstalled, go here and download the latest driver. This driver is the base Synaptics driver. Synaptics is the company that develops the UltraNav software that is currently on your machine, most likely. This driver has helped users before having TouchPad issues, so it may be able to do the same for you.

Hope it helps,
Adam

Hi, Did any one face this problem or having solution for this Subject. My X1 Carbon Touch is just 4 weeks I have been working. After continuous work for over 5 hours entire back panel heats up extensively, further if I continue I can even feel the heat in the keyboard itself and left panel gets very hot as well. Explaining this to the local service center they stated they have to verify with Lenovo directly and revert. So far no reply from them as well. The heating up happens irrespective of system is powered up or runs on battery. May be if I keep it plugged in power heat is further higher. Anyone having idea about it? Mahen

Answer:X1 Carbon Touch extremely heats

Hi, Mahen

What is the machine type and model of this system? You should be able to find this on the bottom of the system in the format XXXX-XXX. Also, what operating system are you running? Lastly, could you check Task Manager and post the values of Processes, CPU Usage, and Physical Memory are? These can be found at the bottom of the window.

Thanks in advance,
Adam

Hi,  I apologize in advance because I am not too good with computers. I tried researching a solution, but haven't found one. I have a Carbon X1 Touch and when I connect it with my external monitor (Dell) using a minidisplay port(?) it doesn't work. The external monitor works for a couple seconds at most and then turns black. I have tried everything including refreshing my laptop and re-installing everything. The weird thing is that it used to work and I didn't use my external monitor for about a month and now it doesn't even detect that the Dell monitor. Thanks!

Probably save a lot of time if you tried your monitor on another computer or tried another monitor on your computer.

Hi all, So I've just taken delivery of an X1 Carbon Touch - i7 with 8GB RAM. Overall I'm impressed - weight is good and the body is beautifully finished. The screen is usable but a little disappointing given the quality of the rest of the package. But here's the thing I'm struggling with....I thought the X1 Carbon Touch didn't have a mobile broadband option. So when I looked at the back end of my laptop I was surprised to see what looked like a SIM card slot. It opens, and there appears to be room for a full size SIM. See the attached...  Any idea what's going on? LC

Hi,

I have been pleased with my 2013 X1 Carbon Touch, however I was disappointed when I received it with a smudge on the screen (see pictures attached). The smudge does not come off with any cleaner and it appears to be beneath the outer layer. The display is not affected and the smudge is only visible when the display is off or dim.

Has this happened to anybody else? Does anybody know the source of the smudge and how to fix it?

The laptop is still under the one year warrantee. FWIW, I purchased it refurbished through Lenovo Outlet.

Many thanks,T

Hi all - we just purchased two X1 Carbons with the following specs:  On both laptops, there is no touch screen available.  I confirmed this by accessing the system properties in Windows, which states "No Pen or Touch Input is available for this Display".  Are we missing something?  Both of these laptops are straight out of the box.

Answer:2014 X1 Carbon No Touch Screen

The 2014 X1 Carbon comes in both multi-touch and non-touch models. The Display specification you posted doesn't explicitly say if it has the multi-touch feature but I can infer it indirectly. The WQHD non-touch screen has 300 nits brightness specification while the multi-touch version is only 270 nits.

Please post the model number of the X1C2s that you ordered. It's something like 20A70035US. That will confirm that you have the non-touch model.

If you meant to order a touch screen model but inadvertently ordered non-touch you will have to contact Lenovo to see what they can do for you.

I posted this on the tablet forum but probably more appropriate here: I am one of the lucky ones who just got the X1 Carbon Touch (after a 2 month wait). Touch screen is VERY spotty.  Will just stop working.  All the time.  Even in the middle of gestures. I found that by going to the upper right corner touch will start working again, and then it'll stop moments later in the middle of an activity. This is Windows 8, of course.  I have used plenty of other Windows 8 devices so I'm not a novice.  I have never seen this behavior.  Is this a driver problem?  A setting I don't know about (some special Lenovo thing?).  I am hoping its not hardware.  The fact that touching the upper right corner enables things for awhile seems to indicate its not hardware but not certain.

Hey Lenovo, I'm writing because I have not been able to solve my Wi-Fi problems. The Intel Wireless AC 7260 is very unstable and does not update properly. I am about 10-15 feet away from my router, which normally is fine, even for my Galaxy Neus 5, but speed drops are detrimental to my usage. Often, it'll fluctuate between 3-5 bars, and occasionally drop connection completely. Here are things I've tried: -Update drivers (I am currently using 16.6.0.8, which allows me to connect. However, when I try to update to 16.10.0.5, it won't actually update, but rather it stays at 16.6.0.8. So that being said, I found a direct update installer as opposed to the Lenovo update software and was able to install it. Not surprisingly, it didn't allow me to connect to my router whatsoever. It would say that the router is not compatible, and I would have to roll-back my driver to 16.6.0.8 in order to gain internet access.)-Change power settings to maximum power.-Unselect allow to turn off wi-fi when low on power.-Installing drivers version 17 and 16.5.-Uninstalling drivers completely, reinstalling.-Restarting the computer.-Already uninstalled Norton-Running Lenovo's system update-Windows update-Firewall exceptions  Additionally, I should mention that I'm 10-15 feet away through a wall. I am positive that it's not a router issue, as I have been using this router for about half a year prior to receiving my Lenovo X1 Carbon. I am using Windows 8.1, 64 bit. Another thing I shoul... I have an X1 Carbon Touch since last month. I have been unimpressed with the screen since day one. The screen door effect made it essential to remove the film, which did improve it, but when I sit the machine next to a Thinkpad even as old as a 2008 R61 with a 1680 x 1050 display the X1 looks terrible due to the pixellation. The only thing in it's favour is the brightness. I installed MacType this week which is like a more aggresive Clear Type and can improve the font for the OS explorer/windows etc, but this makes the rendered fonts in Chrome or Firefox worse. Has anyone created a profile for MacType that they can share? I am at the point where I feel if I cannot make the screen less tiresome to look at I will have to use a separate monitor for the office, which is very dissapointing for a machine that cost over ?2500 in Ireland. Any other suggestions would be well recieved. Thank you

I've had the New 2014 Carbon X1 for about a week now, so I thought I'd post a review about my experiences thus far.The version I received was the high end model, i7 4th gen, 8gb ram, IPS 2560x1440 touch display. This is the first Lenovo device I have purchased, and I did so at the recommendation of my brother who has owned a T series for the last 3 years. I am a film student, so my intention is to do some light video editing (not rendering) and lightroom/ photoshop work on this device (in addition to daily use of OneNote). I was looking for a powerful ultrabook with good build quality, battery life, and cooling when I purchased this laptop. Hardware:The hardware on this device has highly conservative look, which I appreciate. The laptop doesn't draw attention, but is pleasing to the eye when viewed up close. I like the fact that there are not as many creases or lines that run through the body of the device (when compared to other devices), which results in a more free flowing but unified appearance. The matte plastic on the top of the lid has a slightly rubberized texture, making the device easy to grip. My hands get hot and moist consistently, so the lid does occasionally pick up some faint moisture streaks if I carry it without a case. The slightly rubberized texture is pleasant to the touch and is easy to wipe down with a damp cloth. The inside of the device has a similar plastic around the keys and palm rests, but does not attain as much of a rubber (soft) feel as the... Read more

A few quick questions:How's the new clickpad?Does the keyboard flex under reasonable pressure? Is the adaptive bar actually a pixel-based LCD or just a series of predefined patterns like the really old LCD displays?Disappointed to hear about the lack of media keys, and what seems like mediocre cooling. I wonder how well it'll hold up to full system load.

Please forgive me, I am still recovering from the shock and frustration generated by dealing with Lenovo Tech Support. I received my X1 Carbon Touch recently, and I have been trying to figure out some - I would think - basic issues. As you all know, for Win 8, Lenovo does not have a custom / proprietary recovery solution. However, there is a Lenovo recovery partition on the machine. I am /assuming/ this somehow can be used by means of the default / built-in Windows recovery mechanisms, but I want to know exactly how without necessarily experimenting myself with it. Also, the computer appears to be equipped with an alternate stand-by mechanism, called Intel Rapid Resume or something like that. It is activated in BIOS and apparently makes use of a hidden ~8 GB partition on the SSD. However, I can find no indication of this mechanism actually working. There are no settings I could find in Windows. I have changed the BIOS setting  to "Immediately" in order to test the functionality, but putting the computer to sleep does not seem to generate a behavior that is in any way different from regular sleep.  Anyway, I would appreciate any advice or information about my questions above. I would like to understand how the rapid resume thing works in order to decide if I want to reclaim that partition or not. I'd also like to know my options should I ever need to re-install the factory supplied OS without actually going through the process. I'd also love it if... Read more

Answer:Basic technical questions about X1 Carbon Touch

elfstone,

To know how the various Windows recovery methods work, please check out this Microsoft website:
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-8/restore-refresh-reset-pc
The only purpose of the recovery partition is to work with the Windows 8 "Remove everything and reinstall Windows" feature.  If you still have specific questions about factory recovery that you can't get from Microsoft articles, let me know.

As for the Intel hibernation scheme, as you noted, it requires a dedicated partition on your SSD that can't be used for any other purpose.  The only setting in Windows is inside the Lenovo Settings application, in the Power section.  Lenovo calls this feature "30 day standby".  The only thing you can do is turn it on or off.  Here's how "30 day standby" works:

1.  when you close the lid or otherwise put the system into sleep mode, the system sleeps for 3 hours.

2.  after 3 hours, the system will wake and check some things, such as AC not attached, wake-on-LAN not enabled, USB device not attached, etc.  If the conditions allow, then the system will enter the 30-day standby state e.g. deep sleep.  Otherwise the system goes back into normal sleep mode.

3.  Deep sleep means that the contents of memory are written to the special hibernation partition on the SSD.  it is very similar to traditional hibernation except that it happens faster by using BIOS methods instead of W... Read more

So, I just received my x1 carbon touch and I was wondering if anyone that his this sytem experiences a difference when pressing down on different keys?  For example I have certain keys that make a different noise when pressed some are louder than others... My "T" "Y" "G" "H" are quite when pressed and some of the other keys are pretty loud and clanky when pressed. Has anyone noticed this or is it just my machine?

Answer:Just received X1 carbon touch.. Noises with different keys?

It could be a defect with your keyboard. I don't own an X1, so I can't compare.

The G and H keys surround the ThinkPoint correct? maybe that area is quieter because of that.

however, if it becomes a real problem, I would contact tech support.

Hello all. Just received a new X1 Carbon Touch i7/8GB. Works great standalone, however when I add the USB 3 dock with external monitors, the monitors have an annoying artifact; It is most noticeable as a subtle flicker in any white portion of a window that occurs any time the window is updated. It seems to be worst when scrolling black text on a white background. Also very noticeable in any vertical lines in a window, as they will seem to "jump" back and forth horizontally as you scroll. The effect is very distracting. I've tried replacing the USB 3 Dock, but didn't make a difference. I've tried the latest drivers from the DisplayLink website, no change. I've tried multiple resolutions with both dual and single monitors, but that doesn't seem to make much of a difference, either. I've read a comment in another forum from someone experiencing similar symptoms, but the response they got from another use was that this is normal compression artifacts for DisplayLink adapters running over the bandwidth-constrained USB3 interface. However, I find this hard to believe as these artifacts are very visible and I can't imagine most users would find them acceptable. Plus, I'm not running my monitors anywhere near the max resolution for the adapter, so I can't imagine I should be anywhere near a bandwidth limitation that would trigger compression artifacts. And, for the most part, HD videos seem to play fine, which seems like they would be much more demanding. Anyone else e... Read more

Hi all, I accidentally dropped my x1 carbon 3rd generation on the floor and since then the screen stopped working. I connected it to an external monitor, it boots fine and everything runs normally. However, I can only see the backlight working on the laptop screen. Would replacing the LED panel solve this issue or could the issue be somewhere else? Thanks for any insight! Meson

After a slight fiasco with Lenovo sending me a DOA laptop, I've been quite happy with my X1 Carbon, but the issues I'm having with my wireless are getting tiresome. The problem is I can't narrow it down to a driver issue or a Windows 8 issue. Hopefully you all can lend a hand. There are two issues: 1) When connecting to an unsecurred network in a hotel or airport (i.e. where they have a browser based authentication) the X1 won't make the connection unless I reboot the machine. Once rebooted I have no problem. Flipping 'airplane mode' on and off doesn't work. 2) The machine is randomly deciding to connect to unseccured networks. These are not networks I have connected to before nor are the SSIDs remembered names. It is doing this even if a network I have saved is in range and a stronger signal. Any help?

Answer:Massive wifi issues with X1 Carbon Touch

whubbard,

What version of wireless card do you have, and have you installed the latest version of the driver from our support site?   I note that you specify unsecurred networks ... when connecting to secured networks at home or office, are the symptoms the same?

Regarding switching to another network... is there a setting for roaming agressiveness?

Answer:Slow wifi x1 carbon touch on windows 8

Ok, I think I have this one fixed. I had to go into the device manager and enable "wireless-n" mode. for some reason it was off. This was also preventing me from accessing my 5g N band. Also, make sure you change the channel bandwidth from 20mhz to "auto" to increase the speed. Its beyond me why these settings where this way by default. But I can say that my wifi is tons better and much, much faster! Let me know if you have any questions!

The Windows 8 drivers and utilities for several things seem to be in poor shape.  The wireless network driver seems to drop out randomly every few hours. I had a service call to replace the hardware this week, didn't get any better. Sometimes resetting the adapter fixes it, other times it takes a full reboot. The latest drivers from the Intel site didn't help, rolling back to the original ThinkPad drivers didn't help. The Intel ProSet tools are useless. It appears to be the same problem as this one: http://www.eightforums.com/network-sharing/18418-wireless-randomly-disconnecting.html If you use the touchscreen, it is constantly generating messages that show up in the system event log: "A multi-touch device reported inconsistent contact information." The fingerprint reader won't work for logging in if you've switched to a Windows ID for login. Very unfortunate since that's one of the best features of Windows 8 -- syncing up settings across systems. I was getting a version mismatch error from the Lenovo Solution Center, turned out that the Windows 8 apps that Lenovo installs have conflicting versions with the desktop apps. Sooooo, I tried updating the Windows 8 apps through the Windows store but that didn't help. Finally I just uninstalled the Windows 8 apps and that seemed to fix that. Anybody else having these issues? Did you figure out solutions? I'm about ready to send this back. The hardware is nice, although the screen isn't wonderful, b... Read more

Hi, my brand new Thinkpad X1 Carbon touch screen is showing a couple of internal cracks on the top right hand corner, where I usually open it. Since the laptop is under warranty and this is clearly a hardware fault, I've contacted the support in order to create a new service case. I got an email with a 200 quote to repair a faulty screen. Its unbelieveable that Lenovo will do this, especially when anyone can see that the crack is internal and the laptop is brand new! Anyone else had this issue with the X1 Carbon?  If they don't solve this, this will most likely be my last Thinkpad...

I have the new x1 carbon touch. Just recently I started having wierd keyboard issues.  This started after I wiped the keyboard down (screen was locked) with a screen wipe.    I can't put my finger on this issue yet--I'm assuming some key may be stuck but I can't figure out which one. When I press the Fn button on the Adaptive keyboard it gives me this message,"This key combination opens the Lenovo Settings program.  You do not have the Lenovo settings program installed on you computer.  To launch the program using this key combination, install the program first." Is this an issue with my Alt key?  I'm having some wierd results with Alt-Tab (it works sometimes).  How should I go about troubleshooting this?

Hi all,My brand new X1 Carbon seems to have some issue with the keyboard. At first I thought it's because I'm not yet used to the slim profile (I usually use a mech keyboard) but closer inspection let me to believe sometimes when the keys are hit they aren't actually registered. Have anyone here came across similar issues? I have done a quick search on the internet with no apparent luck. Any input would be helpful, thanks in advance!

Answer:X1 Carbon Touch backlit keyboard not working

Welcome to the forum. Sorry to hear about this on a brand new ThinkPad.

This does sound like either a defective keyboard or maybe one that has been poorly installed/connected. Unfortunately the keyboard on X1C models, unlike other models, is not something you can reinstall or replace on your own. Also since this is a brand new system I would suggest you contact Lenovo support for assistance.

Hi, My X1 Carbon Touch comes with Intel HD Graphics 4000. The graphics settings (GfxUI) stops working after making any changes to the settings. Essentially, you can start the UI and it first displays a dialog asking which "mode" you want to start it in. Then you can "go in" and make changes. If I change, say, the Gamma or the Contrast setting, then the change actually is correctly applied. However, it is subsequently impossible to start GfxUI again - it crashes every time. I uninstalled / reinstalled Intel HD drivers, and I was again able to acces GfxUI. However, again, after making any change to the settings, then GfxUI would crash on subsequent attempts to start it...

I tried the reset button (hole) but same problem, I tried to call the service center but they just pass me to other offices and there is no help. Does anyone here encounters problems with the speaker on your X1 Carbon? I usually place my X1 on a flat surface / work desk to work, with music playing but when I pick it up, the speaker does not output any sound at all. This has happen on far too many occasions and it gets extremely annoying as I look like an idiot after that, constantly picking up and setting down the **bleep** thing just so I can sort of get the speaker to output sound correctly. I didn't drop the accursed thing and yet the speakers works as if some innards had come loose or something. The headphone jack doesn't work as well when the above nonsense takes place. Any advice or solution for this? I had wanted to recommend my company to switch from Dell to Lenovo (ultrabooks) but after my 'fabulous' experiences (a multitude of others which I have not posted here because the Lenovo Support in Singapore SUCKS) with this, I think its safer to stick with Dell's XPS series.

The cables were between the cover (a quality of manufacturing)....whenever I moved the laptop I was experiencing issues with sound. What I did: I just called Lenovo to come over and repair it (I took only 3 visits of the technicians to fix it ?and only 2 months!).Please see position 11 on this picture:  Now it is OK Hope you find it helpful.Take care and cheers.

I received my new silver matte Thinkpad X1 Carbon laptop less than 3 weeks ago and it already has a slight skim mark in the lid!  I tried to lightly rub it off with a cotton cloth because I thought is was a scuff mark on the surface.  That didn't work.  After a closer inspection, I realized that the lid paint was skimmed!  Does Lenovo sell touch up paint for the silver matte finish? Does anyone have any suggestions how I can refinish my lid?  It seems that the new silver matte color is not as durable as the traditional black!

Hi, stmiller
I found a page here that may provide some assistance. During patches and updates, a change could have occurred in the group policy of the machine, which would render the setting shown in the photo unusable. I would check this through the Local Group Policy Editor. To get here, open the Start menu and type Edit group policy in the search bar. Open up the program link of the same name when it appears. From here, navigate to Computer Configuration ? Administrative Templates ? Windows Components ? Biometrics. Make sure that the devices have not been disabled here.

Hope it helps,
Adam

I bought a new X1 Carbon (non-touch) a couple of months ago, and I'm having what I believe to be genuine screen issues with the laptop. The biggest problem is that when I view content with a gradient, the gradient bands terribly and animates. I can watch the colors change around and it's all blocky (horizontal stripes).

Is this normal? It's not just with Chrome, but any application, and I looked through the settings and couldn't find anything that would cause this, nor any settings that would change what it looked like at all.

Answer:X1 Carbon (non-touch) display/screen issues

Yes, it is called Frame Rate Control and it is typical for low cost outdated TN panels. Make sure you have set '32 bit color depth' and '60Hz refresh rate' in Display Settings. If it still persists, you (and me) are one of those people who can can't stand the side effect of the FRC. No solution except buying another notebook with more up-to-date display technology like IPS or PLS. You might try to ask Lenovo if there is another vendor of the display that might have different (less disturbing) FRC implementation. There were Samsung T61p 15" WUXGA TN panels in the past having poor FRC as well but there was an LG alternative.

Answer:X1 Carbon Touch Backlit keyboard not working

Hi, architect7

Be sure to hold the Fn key while pressing the Spacebar to turn on the backlit keyboard. If you have already tried this to no avail, then I would recommend checking some BIOS settings. To enter BIOS, reboot the machine. When it is powering back up and you see the Lenovo splash screen, tap the Enter key repeatedly. A menu should appear. When it does, press F1 to enter BIOS. Once here, navigate to Config ? Keyboard/Mouse and check the settings of Fn and Ctrl Key swap and Fn Key Lock. For purposes of this test, make sure they are both set to Disabled. Once done, press F10 to save and exit. The machine should now boot normally. Log in to Windows and try to activate the backlight again and see if that works.

Best of luck,
Adam
