x230 received, few issues (keyboard, screen). Thoughts?

Question: x230 received, few issues (keyboard, screen). Thoughts?

First, it arrived with a broken key (left Ctrl fell out when I opened the lid). I have a new keyboard on order (they said 2 business days to arrive), so no biggie there. But is the keyboard issue common? Second, the screen has a bright spot in the lower left part of the screen. Is that normal? Thanks!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have owned my ThinkPad X230 for roughly 4 months now. About 3 weeks into using it, the "u" key cover on the keyboard fell off. When I called customer support they told me the key was not covered by the warranty. So I have been working with the key taped over top of the pad. Then two days ago the "g" key cover fell off. I refuse to work on a computer with two taped keys and since calling customer service is no help, I need some advice. Is there an address where I can send a letter to the complaint department? Anyone with ideas please let me know.

Answer:X230 Keyboard Issues

That is really ridiculous!  My sympathies. Sometimes the less u say the better. Callback support.  Don't mention your previous calls. Tell them that the "U" key doesn't work when you press it.  Don't say anything else.  They will in all likelihood send you a new keyboard overnight.  Piece of cake to replace the keyboard.. Let us know how you made out.

I just received a new compay issues computer: x230 running Windows Pro 64 bit, Office 2010 and an SSD.  Unfortunately, out of the box the pointing devices, either the ultranav or an external mouse and keyboard (MSFT Sculpt), suffer from auto clicking and inability to input text...the text writes over itself...cursor moves forward and then backspaces on itself. The external keyboard worked fine when tested on other notebooks at home.  I did unistall the MSFt keyboard SW on the x230 to see if that made a difference.  Nope.  My IT team remotely updated all drivers, etc. So, everthing system-wise is up to date.  They seemed to have fixed it for about an hour, then it went back to this behavior, including opening multiple instances of applications on its own. The PC is unusable. Thoughts? Halfcalf18

Answer:New Lenovo x230 Pointer & Keyboard Issues

The touchpad is defective. If you have an external mouse, try to disable it (either in BIOS or OS) while you get a replacement.

Hey everyone, Is there any where to get some kind of screenshot or something that would show the Windows 8 desktop running on the Helix to see just how large it is?  I have an X230 which I switched months ago for a MacBook Air 13" as I liked the bigger screen.  I really like the look of the Helix though and am really considering getting it but I'm so nervous at the 11" only display.  I'm using my X230 right now and always found the 12" fine as well as the keyboard on it.  I know the Helix has a much higher resolution but I'm concerned for one thing that things will be way too tiny on it and hard to read, or that even with scaling on it, it will be the opposite in that it's like using a system with a really low resolution.  Does anyone have any feedback on how it compares to say the X230 display, in terms of screen real estate and so on? My other concern is the keyboard.  I plan on using this as my every day business laptop, so basically 8 hours a day on it with the Lenovo portalble USB monitor attached.  All the reviews seem to praise the keyboard and no one seems to say anything about it being too small etc but I just want to make sure it's not like getting a netbook or something where it's cramped and what not. Any feedback would be appreciated thanks!

I'm the lucky recipient of an early ThinkPad X230, it's a review I got yesterday and have had about 24 hours to mess with now (well, I did sleep, so make that 16).  Happy to answer any questions, I'll copy and paste below much of what I wrote in the preview on LaptopReviews.com minus some of the images and video to be bandwidth friendly.   Earlier this week Lenovo announced the ThinkPad X230, a 12.5? screen ultraportable targeted at business buyers. While the X230 won?t go on sale via Lenovo.com until June 2012 (keep an eye on this X230 product page for availablility) we were lucky enough to receive an early review sample to try out. As most of you familiar with the ThinkPad brand know, change is generally slow from one generation to the next to keep the enterprise buying folks from getting all worked up. One thing that certainly almost never changed much was the keyboard. Until now that is.  The X230 and the rest of the ThinkPad line have adopted a new keyboard styling that uses an island style key layout and drops down to six rows of keys from seven. There are a few other changes and added features, the keyboard backlighting being my personal favorite, but for the most part the X230 is just an evolution of the X220 design wise and of course has updated internal components to boost performance.Keyboard Comparison with X220Let?s jump right to the part a lot of people are interested in hearing about -- the keyboard.  Again, a video helps to ... Sometimes, the bottom left of the screen blink and black bars appears, along with some square brightness shapes.
I'm pretty bad to description, so here an album of the problem : http://imgur.com/a/qIwj5#0 (it's more clear if you zoom).

Answer:[X230] Screen issues (black bars)

Hi,

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

I would suggest you to try connecting an external display and check if the lines appear there too.

Update video drivers and change the refresh rate in AC adapter and battery power plans.

Check in BIOS if the black lines appear there as well. Have you tried changing the brightness levels?

Please let me know the happenings!

Best regards,
Mithun.

I have just completed a clean install of Windows 7 Ultimate and all went well except for the screen brightness issue. Anyone have any ideas where I can simply increase this as I have searched everywhere for screen brightness, even BIOS for any setting for display. I have latest update to display driver. I have two other laptops and each shows much brighter than this one and I am surely disappointed in this display. Not sure if it is because this screen is touch enabled and also works off keyboard that could be the issue and a separate setting could be involved on the touch side of the display as it does work with a stylus pen or touch also. thanks and   I hope I can get this brightness to increase somewhat as it is too hazy for me.

I have an X230 that I just upgraded to Win 8.1 (new disk, fresh Win8.1 install).  Win8.1 was installed as soon as I got it so I'm not sure how things worked in Win7. Multitouch doesn't seem to work at all.  The multitest app shows 1 point, there's no touch tab in the control panel Pen and Touch settings, when I tried installing the Win7 enhanced multitouch driver it says there's not tablet installed.  I have a 353422U which is supposed to have multitouch.  Am I just missing a driver somewhere or is this a hardware issue? I started looking at the multitouch issue because screen edge swipes don't work.  The screen seems to be emulating a mouse instead of touch  (mouse arrow cursor is always on while my other tablet doesn't have the mouse cursor).  Is there another way to get screen swipes working if the screen is emulating a mouse?

I put my Win7 disk back in to test and I do have multitouch in Win7.  The Pen and Touch control panel settings also show the Touch tab, which isn't show in Win8.1.  So obviously it's a driver issue. Are there any drivers available that will enable multi-touch on my touch screen?  I tried installing the Win7 drivers in Win8.1 (in compatibility mode) but the setup program says "no compatible tables are installed". John K

I own an Apple Macbook Air too(64GB SSD, 1.8GHz) but although the Macbook Air may be somewhat slightlymore sexy, the X300 is definetely looking much cooler and more professional.Weight seems to be the same, the slightly bulkier(missing the soft/round edges of the Macbook Air) design of the X300doesn't actually look bad at all. So here are my findings and I also have a couple of questions but keep in mind that this is a FIRST DAY ownershipexperience and I may change my opinion a little bit after a short while: 1. X300 has great built quality, the soft material(feels great and isn't as slippery compared to the Macbook Air) was really a great idea.2. the display is definetely much better than the one I know from my "old" X61s(standard display, not TMD), the resolution is to my liking and the display can be easily read outside the office too, so it is definetely outdoor capable. The brightness at the maximum setting is almost at par with the Macbook Air but slightly darker than the Sony Vaio TZ series for example. From my point of view, the X300 has the best display Lenovo ever had on their laptops.3. the video camera is a nice addition, I can finally use Skype Video without any major problems. Quality is similar if not better than the video camera quality on the Macbook Air.4. the X300 definetely runs cooler than the Macbook Air...MUCH cooler. Of course the Macbook Air has a much more powerful CPU but sometimes, especially in Bootcamp mode with Vista, I get the feeling ... Read more

These invitations were sent to me through hotmail and they are from unknown people. I would like to know if the notices are just fake messages or a real tracking device send by the unknown people to track my computer. Thanks.

Hi, I inadvertently pressed something on my ThinkPad keyboard and it's now not typing what I expect to see. The language is set in the control panel to English UK and this hasn't been affected. However most of the letter keys are now acting as keyboard shortcuts. In Word 2010 this is what happens: 4 = ?e = ?r = registered symbolt = trademark symboly = puts cursor to beginning of linei = opens File menuo = puts document in outline viewa = ās = triggers split screend = enters a bookmarkf = enters a footnotel = starts a numbered listc = copyright symbolv = opens paste special dialog box I've obviously trigger some keyboard shortcut to change the settings but have no idea how. Need to reset this asap as it's my work laptop - IT team not able to help as I'm not on the company network and can't log on as my password can't be typed in accurately... Any help appreciated. I've not owned a ThinkPad before.  I had always thought of the IBM/Lenovo laptops as being abit blocky and while possibly useful, not to my taste. My professional needs have shifted and I needed a new laptop, I did alot of reasearch and located a good fit (on paper). So I pulled the trigger on a new W530. then I came across some horror posts about the different kepboard (from the older models) and how much that change sucked and.. and... and... Well, I have to say that after the Laptopn cleared customs and was unboxed it has become one of my favorite laptopns of all time!  I love the keyobard and the springy-ness that they have as well as the way that they cause my (large) fingers to self-center as I type. Perhaps because I never owned a previous model or because of other reasons I really dont understand what the griping is about around these new keyboards. In short, the new keyboard is awesome - the only thing I'd like to have seen is a separate number pad for it on th eright side, but otherwise its good so stop complaining..

I left my computer on and plugged into the adapter for several hours. I have never had a problem with this before. Today, however, when I returned to it, the screen was black, and moving the mouse did nothing. I tried the keyboard--no response. I turned it off and on again manually and it beeped loudly three times, but still no change; it turns on, but the screen remains black and nothing happens. The CD drive opens when I press it when it is on, but that's about it. I even tried removing the battery. Any ideas? I have setup a Windows 7 professional machine that runs Axis software for a few POE cameras and a few other cameras throughout the building, everything work perfectly. The customer wants to have 2 monitors one in the managers office, and one in his main office.

I can either run a 40foot HDMI cable and mirror the screens, or i thought about RDP, however he said he doesn't want the staff from the other office to rdp to the axis server and have control over it, but just be able to VIEW the other screen.

The other office could have dual monitors one for working on, and the other one mounted on the wall that will strictly only be for the rdp session, so they can watch the cameras.

My thought would be to have the rdp connect to the windows 7 box, have the username & password automatically saved, all they do is launch the shortcut on the desktop and they are in and the second monitor views it.

Is there a way to do this, from the remote machine but have the keyboard and mouse Locked out so they can't move the mouse or keyboard in the rdp session but still use the machine as it was a desktop ?

thoughts ?

Answer:Local RDP with locked keyboard mouse thoughts

They are network cameras have them pull them by IP to their local machines? Otherwise there is software to put the axis cameras on 1 screen, remind me when I am in the office, I think it is called quadview, our old win2k server had a way to view a web page with the 3 axis cams we had, this way it is read-only and IP based.

Answer:T410 screen and keyboard issues

Hi Koo_Kwarteng,

Welcome to Lenovo Community!

As per the query we understood that you are facing issues with system NO POST on your ThinkPad T430.

Have you checked with your old keyboard?
Check removing the battery and connect only the power adapter.
Perform power drain and check it once, to proceed with power drain, remove power adapter and battery hold the power button for 30 seconds and after that connect only power adapter and try switching ON the system.

Hope this helps.

Best regards,
Hemanth Kumar

Having received my X1 recently, thought i'd start a thread off on what people think about this laptop in general and what they have done to optimise the laptop and their way of working on it. Having also been a x301 owner (with a broken screen now), I kinda compared some things between them...I'll kick off with my thoughts: Lovely build, seems quite powerful, although i havent really burdened it properly yet with lots of open apps like potoshop with a gazilion raw images open and another gazilion apps running in the background (like I have done on my x301).Seems quite a lot heavier than the x301. **bleep**? I wasnt expecting it to be this much heavier in comparison to the feathery x301? Didnt like that. Even the power adaptor is slightly heavier and larger due to higher amperage required for this laptop.Screen size - compared side by side the x301 has got a bigger screen height wise. By about 1-1.5cm. Again, **bleep**? Why sacrifice this little precious height, in a laptop of a bigger size? I know someone will say but the screen is thinner now, and it has all the lovely wlan & camera hardware built into that top portion, but still... why downgrade on screen size dudes? two finger scroll - awful software, whoever coded this (and i certainly hope its an individual rather than a whole team) should be sacked for failing to test properly what their own code does. There are blogs on the interwebs explaining how to fix, involving a "twofingerscroll" independent app whi... Read more

Very interesting.  Having used the T60 and T510 for several years, my first thought was, why?  Stewart makes some very good points.  I would add that, in general, people don't like change. Laptop keyboards have always been "non-standard." I think I will get used to and like the new layout just fine.  Anything that helps me not hit two keys at once is a plus.  Also, backlit is a huge plus for me. So, aside from the link, what are your views on the subject?

Firstly and most importantly, I suspect the backlight may have gone in my laptop screen.
If, for example, it's just something simple like a loose connection, is this an easy fix?

Otherwise, any idea how much it would cost for a replacement?

Secondly, I"m thinking of switching to a different keyboard layout.
Does anyone know where I can find a Belgian AZERTY keyboard for this laptop?

Hmm?. maybe it?s a FL inverter. The FL inverter is a small part which controls the display backlight?
Usually notebook disassembling procedure is very tricky and it sounds like you have never disassembled the notebook? so I would not recommend doing anything what could damage other parts? Get in contact with an local ASP and ask for the assistance.
Usually the FL inverter should not be expensive parts but I have no idea about the costs?

I am the unhappy owner of a Pavilion x360, prod. no. M9G20EA#UUW. Major issues:About half the times the screen is upside down when I open the PC. Sometimes closing and reopening turns the screen around. Sometimes a restart is needed. The hardware keyboard and touchpad randomly gets de-activated. A complete restart is needed for reactivation. The machine has been in for service. The service company claims that the were no hardware errors, and reverted the OS back to windows 8 - which did not solve the issues. I see in this forum that many has similar problems with this model. I have tried all the suggestions I could find here. Onfortunately it hasn't helped.

Answer:Pavilion x360 keyboard and screen issues

Just to follow up on this: HP transferred my "case" to the danish support, which contacted me by phone and was actually quite keen on helping me.I was send some drivers for display, chipset and touchpad, with instructions for installing them in a specific sequence.Unfortunately it did not solve the problem.I was then away for other business for a while, and when I came back to use the machine again, there was a display driver update from the HP Support Assistant app. Unfortunately the autoinstallation failed, but I managed to find the same driver on HP's product web-page and download and install it manually from there. I also found a newer version of the chipset driver, which I also installed.Installation of these drivers required a great deal of tinkering, including using a third part utility (supplied by HP) to completely remove the old display driver, several reboots into safe mode, etc.At the time of writing this I have experienced no keyboard issue for some time - hoping that it is gone completely. The issue with the screen being upside down is still there, but to a much lesser degree. Furthermore, the orientation sensor seems more sensitive, so that just jerking the screen back and forth a bit wil make it rotate into correct position. If this will continue to be the situation, I can live with it.But still: all this work to make a product work (almost) as advertised should not be necessary. It should work out of the box or at least with a quick, automated driver update.Wh... Read more

Hi,

I have experienced exactly the same problem with this one;
http://forums.computers.toshiba-europe.com/forums/thread.jspa?messageID=280934

I also explained what is the issue and how it developed over time in that topic.

To sum it up; my screen and keyboard are not working in my Toshiba Satellite R830-181, 13.3 inch laptop.

My questions;
1- Is this a motherboard issue?

2- Since it works on an external monitor I assume graphic card or the processor is fine.
There is no physical damage on the screen, therefore, I assume there is a problem with the power connection to the screen.

If I buy a new screen I have doubts that it will work.

I am definitely going to send it to the tech service in my country (hard to find reliable Toshiba tech services around here), however, I'd like to know what may be the cause and if I can fix it myself.

What do you guys think? Is it a power issue or a problem with the screen itself?
If a power issue or something else rather than the screen, how can it be fixed?
Same question goes for the keyboard.

3- If i get it fixed or fix it myself, do you think it will occur again? Because I am thinking this might be a faulty laptop from a certain production series since someone else experienced the very same thing with this model.

4- Can there be a relation between the non-functioning keyboard and the screen?

5- If this can be solved with a screen replacement, do I have to find a Toshiba R830 laptop screen or can I just... Read more

Not easy to say: if external monitor works properly then its not graphic/motherboard problem.
If external USB keyboard works properly, its not motherboard problem too.

> 2- Since it works on an external monitor I assume graphic card or the processor is fine.
Yes, this is correct.

> If I buy a new screen I have doubts that it will work.
I would not recommend purchasing new parts before the faulty parts has not been checked.

> I am definitely going to send it to the tech service in my country (hard to find reliable Toshiba tech services around here), however, I'd like to know what may be the cause and if I can fix it myself.
Good idea to send it to Toshiba service partner since the guys would be able to check the parts and fix it.

> What do you guys think? Is it a power issue or a problem with the screen itself?
If a power issue or something else rather than the screen, how can it be fixed?
>Same question goes for the keyboard.

Don?t think someone can say exactly what cause this? in my opinion its simply a bad luck? hardware can start to malfunction? this happens in for all possible branch of industries (TV, computers, smartphone, cars?)

> 4- Can there be a relation between the non-functioning keyboard and the screen?
No, the keyboard is connected only to motherboard, display is also connected to motherboard but there is no connection between keyboard and display.

i have just purchased a flex 10 todayand seem to be having major issues relating to the keyboard/mouse and the touch screen.  the keyboard/mouse is disabled in laptop mode, but when i switch to theatre mode the keyboard is activated and i cant figure out how to change this to rectify the issues. also the touch screen becomes unresponsive from time to time and have to restart the laptop to rectify this.  is there something i am doing wrong or could there be a fault with the laptop?? thanks

Answer:flex 10 keyboard and touch screen issues

For the touch screen problem, it's an known issue.See here:https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Lenovo-Edge-Yoga-Lavie-Z-Flex/Flex-10-touch-screen-becomes-unresponsive...Go to the comment of zack25, it's the solution. For the other problem, I don't know, it looks more complicated, and worrying. It could be a hardware problem, maybe a bad wiring ?

Hello, I just received my new X230 last week and I noticed my up and down arrow keys are not sitting flat. The down-arrow key is dipping down on the top right corner and the up-arrow key is slanting up on the top right corner. I tried calling support and they say they have to send me a box and ship it in which will take a while. I really can't be without my laptop. Does anyone have any ideas of why it's like this and how I can maybe make the key sit flat myself? It's really bugging me. I've never had a keyboard with keys that slant. Here are some pictures:http://i.imgur.com/sh065.jpghttp://i.imgur.com/gFuyu.jpghttp://i.imgur.com/Zmvk7.jpg Thanks,Ryan

Answer:X230 Keyboard key slanted

Hello,

From looking at the photographs, it looks like the problem is with the actual individual keycap and not with the keyboard as a whole.  Since your X230 is brand new, perhaps it can be repaired under warranty locally?  You might want to contact support again and see if there are any authorized repair facilities nearby.  Otherwise, shipping it in would be the best thing to do.

Answer:x230 keyboard not under warranty?

usually key falling off is not considered part of the warranty (they fall under user induced), but keyboard is part of the warranty (well at least in the X220 it was).

I don't want to turn this into a discussion about the new keyboards vs the old keyboards, but I wanted to post this so that others are aware of this situation. I received my X230 on 12/27, and on the 28th, my b key fell off.  The current model I have installed is 04X1353, which is backlit, and made by SRX (for those of you who don't know, Lenovo sources their keyboards from different suppliers).  After calling support immediately (and waiting for a long time - another day, another post), they decided to ship a replacement keyboard to me, this time a 04Y0639.  What is the difference between 04X1353 and 04Y0639? Both are B/L USE SRX, except in the FRU lists, one is primary whereas the other one is secondary.  What does that mean? Any consensus as to which keyboards are better?

Answer:X230 Keyboard Broken Key

Actually, as you listed them there is no difference.

I received my X230 on 15/11/12, and only one month later my 'g' key fell off.But when we called support here in Israel , i couldn't believe in what i heard. "Keyboard keys are not under warranty".Before this case I had a very good opinion about Lenovo but not more.In support center prefer to blame me than to admit that there is a problem in the laptop. An hour ago, I was on the phone with one of the managers in Lenovo israel. He swore to me that this is the first time he hear about key fell problem in lenovo x230, and of couse it's because of me.Immediately after our conversation i searched about this in the google and discovered that I am not alone.I did not expect this from Lenovo, not for this i paid 1.5K.I paid for goodwill, as i understand now I was wrong.

Answer:X230 keyboard problem.

Hi, avnilm

A key falling off of the keyboard should be covered under warranty, so you are correct in that thinking. Can you send me a private message with your serial number, machine type model, name, and contact information? I'd like to do some research on this problem and see what can be done.

Thanks in advance,
Adam

Anyone knows does this model support keyboards with LED backlight? If such support exists, where I can find FRU's for keyboard with backlit? I found this list, but seems there are only numbers without notes does this item has backlit or no. Thanks a lot and sorry for my English.

Answer:X230 UK Backlit Keyboard

never try to remove the keyboard with power on, this could cause damage to your motherboard. I have swapped my X230 between backlit and non-backlit keyboard many times, It could be that the backlit keyboard that the ebay sold you was DOA or faulty at the start. So try to return the keyboard and get another one.

Hello, I started a new post because this is a different Error. After I updated my x230t using the recommeneded updates from the website, my keyboard suddenly stopped working. I tried re-installing windows but the error remained. I eventually found the issue being that when I start up the PC, the Fn key is stuck as if its still pressed, even when its not (the key itself isnt stuck). To solve this, I went into Bios and swapped the Fn key with left Ctrl, and now whenever I boot up the PC I plug in an external keyboard and press left Ctrl, this "unsticks" the left Ctrl key (which is physically the Fn key after I swapped them)  and lets me use the computer normally. What could have caused it? is it unrelated to windows seeing as it happened after I clean installed? how do I go about fixing it? and can I contact an offical Lenovo support somewhere online?

Answer:x230 Tablet keyboard issue

I would just replace the keyboard.  This sort of problem is almost always a short in the keyboard.  Used ones are commonly available.  The T430, X230, T530, W530 all use the same keyboard

Answer:Replacing the keyboard on a X230 - Exceptions?

you can change between the backlit and non backlit version of the precision keyboard on the X230. As long as your unit has International Warranty coverage in Sweden (and it has valid warranty), then you can get warranty support in sweden. IPS and TN swap is not covered by warranty, if you damage anything, Lenovo may not provide you with support and may void warranty on the rest of the system.

As there are many options in the parts list. Alternatively, if you take a look at the Parts list for the x230, 2306 Model there is a long keyboard list towards the end of the document.

Hi EveryoneI have a new x230.  Overall I am very happy with the machine.  However one thing I noticed is that the complete row of keys that contain the function keys are slighlty tilted; a little higher on the left and lower on the right.  Every key on the row is tilted in that fashion except for the first key (esc) and last key (delete).  They all seem functional and are not loose in any way.  Anyone else experience this with their keyboard?  Should i be concerned?

Answer:x230 keyboard...function keys

I don't have problems with the Function keys but I do with the Delete key.  <rant follows> I just took delivery of two ThinkPad X230's.  I had also bought two before in August, one of which I just finally gave to a user today.  I'm getting quite annoyed at the assembly quality of ThinkPad's these days.  It's taking up too much of my time to call IBM and open cases, although they are usually quite willing to do what I ask. 1st X230 (August) - Just fine.  Deployed to a user in August.2nd X230 (August) - Trackpad made strange noises compared to the other one and had a lot more flex than the other one.  I went away on a business trip for almost a month and when I got back Lenovo (service contract is with IBM for Canada), nobody had ever come to fix it.  The case had been noted as fixed and closed.  So I get that re-opened but then the trackpad-wristrest piece that is sent as my replacement has a fingerprint reader which is not in my spec.  So I take that but request that the proper one be ordered.  IBM tech is great and orderes every available trackpad-wristrest since he can't discrern from the Lenovo system which doesn't have a fingerprint reader (and there is no FRU# on the old one).3rd X230 (October) - Just fine, however, I needed to deploy #2 after it sitting around for so long chewing away warranty, so I had IBM take the good trackpad off this unit and put it onto #2.  So now this unit awaits the trackpad... I sent my t510 in to depot for repair, however, a few days later, they called and said they "can't reproduce my problem... " basically - I'm full of poo. I wasn't happy. here's the scoop. 1. the dynamic brightness kicks in , and dims the screen, however, occassionally - when it does this, the colors fade away with the brightness, and the screen becomes washed out. Manually turning the brightness up or down brings the colors back (after a few seconds). OR just waiting a few seconds after the colors washed out in the first place, allows the colors to come back. When the colors wash out, it's not a "small wash out".. It's a big deal - it looks HORRIBLE. 2. Often, when I shut the computer down (on battery, or a/c power). Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit shuts down, just fine. However, power to the computer doesn't turn off fully. The battery light on the outside lid is still lit up, and you can hear the fan running on the exhaust port (left hand side). If you want to turn the computer back on at this point, you cannot just push the power button (like you normally would). You have to hold it for 4-5 seconds. Wait. Then push the power button (like you normally would). Apparently, the depot can't reproduce this problem. And to make matters worse - tech support didn't even document my issues correctly, and I have a feeling, the depot repair techs didn't exactly know what they were looking for. Anyone have any thoughts?

Answer:2 issues with new t510, depot "can't reproduce".. any thoughts?

1) sounds like the aggressive powermanagement that others have already reported. If you don't want it you can disable it somewhere, search the forum. But its operating according to spec. 2) is a windows problem, did you restore to factory settings?

Hi,
I have 3 issues with my Dell 3147 laptop.
The first one has to do with the keyboard and touchpad. For no apparent reason, the touchpad will disable and re-enable itself and in the process the physical keyboard will completely disable and won't enable again unless I restart the laptop
Second issue has to do with the sleep mode. Whenever I put the laptop on sleep mode I cannot go back to my session and have to press the power button for several seconds until the laptop resets/restarts completely.
Third issue has to do with the screen. It will flip upside-down without me doing anything, which means that I need to manually revert it using the keyboard shortcut everytime.
Appreciate any help.
My laptop is still under warranty, only bought it 10 months ago.
Thanks,
Ioannis

Hi. I'm new here, so please forgive me if there's any local etiquette I haven't noticed! I bought my first Lenovo machiine recently, which was an X230 from the UK Outlet Store. I was a bit surprised that this arrived with a "US International" keyboard rather than a UK one, but with a little bit of remapping I've made it work for me, and I like the machine very much :-) However, I've found that when typing fast the left shift doesn't always seem to register. I can't pin down exactly what causes it in terms of the part of the key that's pressed or anything, because it doesn't occur if I slow down to examine what's going on... but it's getting quite frustrating to miss capital letters off so many sentences! Is this slightly hard-to-define problem something that Lenovo would easily resolve under warrenty? And could it be done without me having to send the machine back to them? (Because it's from the Outlet Store it has a return-to-base warrenty, but I understand that the keyboard is a user replacable unit?) Thanks for any advice.Simon.

Hi there,  I was hoping someone could help me. I have an i5/8GB/128msata(Samsung) x230 that refuses to change screen resolutions when running a windows OS. Whenever I attempt to change the resolution ( whether it be through Intel management app or windows display setting) the drop down menu flickers/ flashes off before I have a chance to make a selection. This happens when connected to an external display as well as the notebook's LCD. This behavior happens before drivers are installed as well as after think Vantage has been installed and patched up after clean builds of Windows7 OR 8 have been installed. By this stage I thought that a hardware component was faulty. But after installing a copy of ubuntu I am able to change resolutions without any problems which is leading me to think that there is a misconfiguration somewhere within the windows environments. The only other factor I am considering is an out of date firmware on the MSSD. As the laptop doesn't have a CD-Rom drive, how is it possible to create a USB bootible drive from the iso provided on the lenovo support website? Thanks is Advance

G'day. I started having an issue with my x230 thinkpad about 8 months ago. It would only turn occasionally after pressing the power button. It appeared to get worse and worse and eventually wouldn't turn on at all. Unit is out of warranty, took it to a Lenovo authorised repair centre who couldn't find any issues with it although for some unknown reason as they were putting it back together it magically started working. The issue reared up again and now I'm back to square one. I started troubleshooting it myself and found partial success as follows: If I remove the battery and power cable. unplug the CMOS battery (which has been replaced) and leave it for a few minutes THEN plug only the power cable back in, it boots! Once it has booted, I shut it down. Plug CMOS battery, main battery and power cable in and it will NOT boot. I repeat the process of unplugging and draining power, boot with just the power cable in and it works. Hardware Scan comes up good. HDD is tested fine. Battery has plenty of life. Unit has been very well looked after and never dropped. Any help would be much appreciated. I'm trying to figure out whether to cut my losses or not. Cheers Dave Product 2306CTOSerial: R9W1TPBIOS: G2ET31WW(1.11)

Hello and welcome,

I went through something like this with a different model.  Various gyrations would let it power on.  Turned out to be a bad power button.

I realize that sounds unlikely - and maybe isn't your situation - but it's maybe worth checking if you can lay hands on a keyboard to test with.

I have two users with X230 Tablets and recently the Ultranav would stop working - seemingly randomly and occasionally. I upgraded both users to the most recent version of the BIOS and UltraNav driver - version 16.2.19.13 - and the issue has actually become worse. I've disabled/enabled, uninstalled, reinstalled and the issues keep coming back. I can get the UltraNav working - but after undocking (following the proper undocking procedure), closing the lid, the tablet going to sleep and hibernating - the UltraNav TrackPoint and TouchPad both become disabled. Interestingly, before the user logs in - both the TrackPoint and TouchPad will both work, then disable again as soon as the user logs in and the options for UltraNav are completely greyed out until I uninstall and re-install the driver. I'm at a loss.

Hello all. New X230 here running Windows 8 Pro.  For some reason, I always have the Windows Touch Keyboard in the taskbar.  I have stopped the Pen and Touch service and unchecked it in the Taskbar -> Toolbars.  Everytime I reset/power up, it's back. Any ideas what is causing it to appear every time?

Answer:X230 - Disable Windows 8 Touch Keyboard in taskbar?

Hi, Coronadoisdead

Unfortunately, I do not think that there is a setting or way to do this as of yet in Windows 8. Windows 8 is geared toward touch-computing, so it does make sense that this setting would always be available, even if it can be rather annoying. I was able to get it to turn off and not open the touch keyboard, but I was not able to make the icon disappear permanently. I attempted to remove it by ending the service, messing around in msconfig, etc., but I was not able to get it to not appear upon a reboot or cold boot.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news,
Adam

I just want to share a method here. If you hate X230's keyboard and want to install X220's keyboard instead, please bear in mind that the palmrest should also use X220's style.

Answer:[Method Share] How to change X230's keyboard to X220's.

It's been done successfully, but the key mappings are different, so it's a no-go until there's a BIOS patch.

I bought my online upgrade and let it proceed from W7 and later downloaded and burned the .iso, so what I have is a true upgrade from W7 and not a clean install. I really have no big issues, just anoyances really, with my live tiles.

My Live tiles don't update them selves unless I open them first. What I mean is for example; the wikipedia tile gives me sugested articles in the live tile, however if I don't open it, it keeps the same info from the day prior. Same goes for the dictionary tile, it should give me the word of the day, unless I open it the tile never refreshes and stays on the previous word. I won't even get into the Mail app and tile that don't notify or update unless I open it.

My question is would any of you try a clean install to fix this? I really hate to reinstall all my programs, but really what's the point in a live tile if it isn't actually live

I guess I am just wondering what some of you gurus would try to fix this little quirk or if anyone else has this problem?

Thanks

Geeve

Answer:thoughts from gurus on a fresh reinstall live tile issues.

I've seen this happen when I hibernate my puter many times during the day and resume from hibernate. Sometimes it isn't connected to the network, and when I do, the tiles will usually refresh. Sometimes not, but when I restart they will refresh.

Don't know if this helps, but might help.

I bought a refurbished X230 laptop recently and the first few months had no real issues with it. Further down the track, I notice, in laptop mode, if its not completely stable it would inadvertantly and continuously right click. For example, if I'm typing rather quickly causing my laptop screen to shift even slightly, it would open up the right click menu. I thought it might have something to do with the accelerometer but if I change it to tablet mode, nothing of the sorts happens. I have no idea what the problem might be, any ideas?

Hello! I just got a new X230 Tablet Notebook (with standard digitizer pen) and know nothing about it (got it as a work computer).  When I am on the basic Windows 7 login screen my pen works beauftifully.  Once I successfully log in it does not work at all.  In portrait tablet mode it will SOMETIMES register where I tap after a long delay.  It does not hover as it should and will never "click".  There is no response in landscape tablet mode. Please help!  Thanks! :-)

Answer:X230 Tablet [Brand New] Pen Issues

Hi, vgbornak

Though the machine is brand new, there may be a few updates available for the computer. I would recommend making sure that the BIOS is up to date, along with other drivers as necessary. The BIOS driver can be found here, and all the drivers available for the machine can be found here.

Best of luck, and let me know how it goes
Adam

Until updating my new x230 ThinkPad, the audio worked just fine. Upon reboot, the audio output would work neither thorugh the speakers or earphones.  I've tried the basics - turning off and on, checking the mute functions, and just recently reinstalled the audio driver. Any suggestions on what to try next?

Hi all. Lots of changes in the forum since I last posted. New locations, new design, my old ID doesn't work...  Anyway, I haven't searched in a couple of weeks so I apologize if this has been resolved. I'm having WiFi connectivity issues after upgrading to Windows 10. I see other people also have this problem. I've done both an upgrade and clean install. My connectivity will drop to limited and I can either select a different network or toggle airplane mode to restore connectivity until the next time it happens. I've done the usual stuff like deselect that the computer can turn off the NIC to save power but I'm open to all suggestions in case I missed (or didn't think of) something. I do know that the x230 WiFi is supported by the out of box drivers in Windows 10 and there is a version newer on Intel's site but neither version resolve the issue for me. My driver version is currently 15.18.0.1 (from Intel's site). Any help is appreciated. I'm willing to go back to Windows 7 but Windows 10 is supported for it and I'm stubborn and want to make it work.  Thx.

It's been about 5 months since I started to use my Thinkpad  X230.  Only three days ago it could work for 5-6 hours without charging.  I could charge it at home, bring it to school and use it without charging.  But suddenly the battery started to die in a short amount of time.  Then I explored the battery settings a little bit.  I found out it says "Battery Condition: poor" and "Your battery can 47% of its original full charge capacity."   It has warranty until 2015. So can Lenovo send me a new battery if I want so? Or is it a problem that warranty doesn't cover? Please help!!

Answer:Thinkpad X230 Battery issues

Well, a few things. 1.  The warranty you mention sounds like it is for the system.  The system and battery typically have different warranty terms.  Unless of course you did order an additional battery warranty. 2.  However, the base battery warranty is one year, so if you contact them they should get you a replacement since you are only a few months into ownership. Good luck!

I have an X230 running Windows 8 and an Ultrabase 3 with DVD writer.  Windows is fully patched by System Update and Windows update.  I have two issues: 1. When docked, I just get the ThinkPad logo onscreen, the laptop will not continue booting until it is undocked.2. When Booted, the keyboard and mouse plugged into the dock don't work until the laptop is undocked then docked again. Both these are intermittent and I haven't established the pattern yet so I can't reproduce them on demand. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Answer:X230 and ultrabase boot issues

I've had similar issues. But have found that if I remove the DVD drive from the Ultrabase 3 everything works as it should.

I've begun having an issue with my work X230.  On occasion, especially after I open the screen from the closed position, the LCD will freeze and stop updating.  Sometimes individual pixels also begin to grey out or turn white, leaving a sort of dithered greyscale image of the currently open window.  I've hooked up a secondary screen and can confirm that:The mouse and keyboard are still working, so it's not an input issue. The desktop and apps on the secondary screen are still responsive, so it's not a GPU issueWhen the primary display is closed, the current application appears on the secondary display and is responsive, so it's not an application issue.Adjusting the screen tilt repeatedly can cause this problem to go away, as can pushing on the surface of the annunciator bar below the LCD (the part of the bezel with the "lenovo" and "X230" logos, near the hinges).  I'm 99% certain this is a ribbon cable issue, either caused by a nearly-dislodged cable or a worn cable.  I've seen the same situation with a couple other laptops in the past. However, I have a few questions:1) Has anyone else seen this issue, and if so, what was your solution?2) Is this user-repairable?3) Is there anything I can do to keep this issue from worsening? Thanks.

Answer:X230 screen freezing - screen stops updating, goes gray - possible ribbon cable issue

Hello Lenovo customer,From the symptoms you have described it seems as if there may be a fault with the LCD cable within the machine. The indication that i have that it is the cable, is when you stated that the issue is resolved when you change the position that the LCD panel is sitting in. The LCD Cable isn't a customer replaceable unit so you may need to contact technical support in order to organize a service to get the LCD Cable replaced.

After upgrading my X230 from Win7 to Win10, keyboard inputs crash some programs. For example, with any browser (MS Edge, Chrome and Firefox), type anything in the URL field would crash the browser. The browser would become non-responding. Need to kill it with Task Manager. Similar with MS Office. Keyboard only works with selected program. So far, works with Notepad and Windows Explorer (can change file name). Tried using an external USB keyboard, still have the problem. I have installed the latest drivers, still no luck.

Just bought a 2 port flush mount 54mm USB expresscard (Startech.com) and it does not see any USB devices I plug into it.  I installed the drivers from the CD and from Startech site and device manager shows drivers installed correctly. To me, it appears there is not enough power to drive my thumb drives etc.. Everything seems to be installed correctly but just does not work.  I'm thinking there may be issues with the expresscard slot.

Hi all,Apologies if I've missed this elsewhere - new to the forums so still learning to navigate. As background, machine type listed below:X230 Laptop (ThinkPad) - Machine Type 2325, Model BA6As I see it I'm having two separate issues here but they may well be linked: Recent Windows 10 updates are making the taskbar fully ineffective - I note this is fairly common and have tried the powershell route to check updates to no avail; curious to know what the advice here generally is, if X230 is no good with Windows 10 or is there something specific I should be doing to rectify this. This weekend, my laptop has developed a habit whereby the sound and video playback stops working suddenly. On boot-up it's fine but after a while, I can't listen to music or watch videos at all. Bit alarmed about this but suspect it may be linked to the thunderstorm on Thursday (based in London...), given I woke up to realise the powerboard on my TV had also gone. My laptop is within warranty so hopefully if it's hardware related, I would hope this is covered - in truth, I was reassured about the Lenovo warranty but have never had cause to use it at home or work over the last 6 years of using Lenovos.Any help or guidance would be massively appreciated!Kind regards,Bal

Hi All, My first post here...sadly it's not in praise of the thinkpad line. We have two IBM Thinkpad R50e's at work, and was quite impressed with the build quality. Up to now they're holding up quite nicely...which is what made me want a thinkpad. i finally got my hands on a thinkpad x230 last week....and when i opened it, the plastic bezel on the top right corner of the lid popped out On closer inspection i noticed that the top right corner flexed, right where the strip of plastic at the edge meets the LCD display, and with it the bezel. At rest the two pieces don't line up properly. The leftmost corner of the lid showed no flexing at all. i seriously doubt if this was caused by mishandling during shipping. The box only had minor bumps, and none of them seem to line up with where the damage was. i've gone to the local service center here, who informed me that this isn't covered by the warranty. i am currently awaitnig a quote for the part that i will have to pay out of my own pocket, on top of the price i paid for thinkpad "quality". On top of that, there's this annoying battery wiggle. The service center that this is normal...which is quite disappointing, since the battery on my old Asus EEEPC1000, after all these years, has not shown even the slightest wiggle after all these years of abuse. Needless to say i am very disappointed. Sorry to say this but this will most likely be my first and last Lenovo. i am willing to pay a premium for qu... Read more

Answer:thinkpad x230 build quality issues

There's an explanation for the battery wiggle, all systems are like that. Even the X131e. My old laptop used as a workstation has a bad battery, but I took it out so it's temperature can stay at a stable level. I find the "used by NASA" a total bluff as the Space Station relies on older ThinkPad systems, since they were modified to be in 0 gravity environments. Sorry to hear that your X230's bezel popped out, mine doesn't suffer this so I'm presuming it's batch was a little lemony. I had another X230 which I returned for a full refund and waited a year and ordered again. It's a little ridiculous, because Lenovo normally sells nice systems but they're cheapening out over the years.

I got my X230 Tablet recently and want to run it under Windows 8. After upgrading yesterday, the Touch Screen refuses to work: the position is always in the bottom right corner, but clicking is recognized. The effect is that all windows are closed and opened alternately when touching the screen. Quite annoying, in particular as in Windows 8 the Touch screen would be actually very useful. I updates all drivers and bios, as far as possible, but the Touch Screen behavior remained. Somebody suggested that a clean installation of Windows 8 does lead to a well working Touch Screen. I tried it once, but after about two hours of computer work, Windows came back with the message that the installation failed, and thus I stay with my non working Touch Screen. What do I have to do to get my Touch Screen working again? The Wacom Pen is fine, so I can live with the X230 for the time being, but working with my fingers on the screen would be actually nice - and it beats those iBooks by lengths. Who has ideas?

From what I can tell, after a cold boot, one application can produce audio, but when I switch to another application, it is not able to produce audio.  For example, after i log in, I can go to the sounds control panel applet, click on the slider and get audio successfully, but when I close the applet and open it or any other application, it is not able to produce audio. I've tried to reinstall the driver, but this did not make a difference.  I have the Lenovo System Update app installed, so I'm pretty sure I have the latest driver installed. Any ideas on how to fix this issue? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

to be sure you got the most recent from TVSU, which can sometimes lag behind the matrix a bit.

Hello I'm giving feedback about the audio issue people are talking about in this discussion forum.  I have an x230 that keeps having audio issues.  Either the audio buttons stop working or if the buttons work, no sound is heard from the laptop without going into device manager and removing the RealTek audio driver and then letting Win XP find it again.  It appears the issues isn't O/S specific and have also seen that laptops sent to Lenovo have the system board and speakers replaced, however it doesn't resolve the issue.  I also see that by reimaging the laptop, that doesn't solve the issue either.  The details of the machine are below:

That's all right, everything is set up and managed in the whole deal, except that the behavior of the middle button at the touchpad is not configurable and always operates on a scroll.Those. in the latest version of the drivers, this option has a check box, and there, only the behavior of a button it affects in any way, even to put - at least not put - scrolling! The only solution to remove the drivers synaptics and work under the standard windows driver for the mouse, but it is not convenient - every day this piece of *** is trying to roll the same curve of the driver and to please me broken middle button, which the browser is much more necessary to function as a middle mouse button (opening and closing tabs). However, can someone scroll function is very necessary, but obviously not for me, please add the ticket to synaptics, cause they the one, who coukd fix the bug.

Hi! Been pulling my hair out for a week with this. I am an advanced user who is totally stumped. This is a fresh install of Windows 7 Professional x64 with all drivers installed from lenovo.com x230 3435-22U having issues where if it goes to sleep. When the machine wakes up, SOMETIMES it allows me to move the mouse with no issues and continue to use the PC.  SOMETIMES, I have to use the touchscreen to move the mouse and then can continue using the trackpad. and SOMETIMES, it is totally frozen at the log-in screen and then powers down suddenly. Hardware diagnostics all check out just fine. I have also switched SATA in BIOS to 'compatibility' and upgraded the BIOS as recommended. I have also disabled AMT inside the BIOS. I'm really stumped here. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

I am looking to buy either an X220 or X230 Thinkpad laptop and have been reading the forums here for information about wake from sleep issues for these two machines. I have found a lot on the X220 - seems to be a common problem, so I am now thinking that isn't going to be my choice. My questions for those who may have experienced this with an X230: -is the wake from sleep a common issue with the X230 laptop?-is this more of a SSD issue than a regular HHD?-is this related to the amount of RAM installed?-is this more of a Win 7 issue? If so, any version that is more susceptible? I had an HP laptop that finally was unusable due to this issue and want to avoid that with a new laptop. I really like the features and size of the x230 - and that I can still get Win 7. Any input on how often the X230 has this type of issue - and any solutions that have worked - would be greatly appreciated, as I really am reluctant to have history repeated with this wake from sleep issue. Thanks!HL

At work, I have just been given an awesome new X230 with a Mini Dock Series 3 docking station. I installed Windows 8 Professional instead of the Windows 7 which was installed per default. I love it, and it is super fast, but I have one issue: when I put the X230 on the docking station and plug my earphones into the mini-jack of the docking station, I get no sound. It works fine under the following setups (in all cases, the laptop is docked): Headphones plugged into the laptop and audio device set to "headphones"Headphones unplugged and audio device set to speakerIn all other cases, I get no sound. I'd like to fix this so I can plug the headphones into the back of the docking station, rather than into the side of the laptop. Thanks in advance :-)

Hi,I have a Lenovo X230, S/N ********, type 2325 , now with 2 years and less than 2 months (with 4 year warranty extension). From new I bought this computer with two batteries, and from day one of the batteries was loose (I never complained because I was making my master degree and then one year erasmus). And the paint on my computer is peeling of, as you can see in photos. From day one this computer is used on a sleeve, and taken with care.My old T410s is like new and never was threated like this one.I called IBM Portugal for assistance (due to a screen problem) and to see this issues. The answer was "yes you have a defect on the paint and in the battery (1mm shorter on the sides!), but we can't do nothing, since we only repair hardware, you must open a claim case with lenovo.Guess what? The email for Portugal doesn't work, the phones provided are for IBM and I can't find a way to claim...I guess this isn't a way to threat someone who pays 1200eur for a laptop. If some mod can open opening a case I would thank.

Hi everyone, I am currently owning an x230 with TN display. I came accross an offering of a very pristine x220 with IPS screen. I wonder if I can swap the screen between them. Thanks in advance for your input. Cheers,

Welcome to the forum!

Swapping the panel will work. I'm not sure about swapping the entire lid though...

Just seeing what owners of the s210 or s215 and other s2xx series laptops are saying about the screen. really considering a general purpose small, light laptop and i have narrowed it down to a s2xx or a yoga 11. really want to hear your thoughts as the yoga is speced with an IPS and the s series isnt.  really like the s series for its msata and hdd bays. the yoga doesnt seem to have this. i work with photos alot and the ips screen will be really handy. i assume the processor of the s (amd) wont be the greatest but it will be "good enough"

Answer:General thoughts on the s2xx screen?

nevermind, saw reviews. looks like the screen is like all them other thinkpads...rubbish
