X230: Pointer jumps away when lifting finger from touchpad

Question: X230: Pointer jumps away when lifting finger from touchpad

Guys I'm having this issue with my touchpad, when I slide towards a button on the screen and lift my finger up to hit the click button, in most of the cases I mis-click because it seems the pointer jumps away when I lift my finger. This is very irritating. This was default with clean install Windows 7. So I installed the drivers i.e. UltraNav, but that made things worse! Now it seems like the resolution has dropped and the mouse cursor is twitchy. I played with the UltraNav settings, made things a bit better, but yet still worse than the default configuration I had with Windows 7. Oh yeah, the jumpiness of the cursor remained after lifting finger from touchpad. So I removed those drivers again... What to do now? Seems like a software issue, but that jumping drives me nuts.......

Preferred Solution: X230: Pointer jumps away when lifting finger from touchpad

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: X230: Pointer jumps away when lifting finger from touchpad

Install the latest Synaptics drivers, set everything to default and increase touch sensitivity a bit. That'll make it much better until Lenovo gets their act together. The latest Synaptics drivers were just released.

Hi everyone, I buy laptop - Lenovo Edge E330. I'm experiencing a very annoying problem - whenever I move the mouse pointer using the touchpad and lift my finger off it, the pointer jumps a bit when lifting my finger. This causes the cursor to miss my target so I have to re-position it every time. I've had this problem with Linux and Windows XP, with or without the Synaptics driver installed. Is there any option in the Synaptics driver to resolve this issue?

Answer:Edge E330 - Pointer jumps when lifting finger off touchpad

Hi, barzefutz

Provided your drivers are fully updated (which you can find here if they need updating), then I would recommend lowering the sensitvity of your Trackpad to reduce instances of this issue. You can change the Trackpad sensitvity by going through Control Panel > Mouse. In this menu, you should see a tab that says Pointer Options. There is a setting to change the speed in this menu.

Good luck,
Adam

Hi everyone,
As the title says really. I just want to see if others are having similar problems before I bring this up with Dell directly.
Some pertinent info: This is my second 'XPS 15 9560' and both laptops have had the exact same problem. All drivers are up to date, windows is up to date so I'm using the latest precision drivers from microsoft. I have tried disabling double tap dragging and enhanced precision to no avail.
I'll be happily moving my pointer around the screen and as I lift my finger to click on something the pointer will jump about 5 - 10mm in a random direction, often causing me to click on the wrong thing.
The fact it's happened on both laptops tells me others must be having this problem too. I can't seem to find anything specific on the issue though.
It's driving me nuts and would like to know if anyone who has had this problem has managed to cure it? I've heard installing synaptics drivers can help with some touchpad issues but then you lose touchpad functionality so seems pointless to me, also this fix was for the 9550, last years model so not sure how relevant it is, although my understanding is it's the same touchpad.
Hopefully someone can help, thanks
Mark

So i just recivece my new u430, and overall i'm pretty happy. I have a few issues with the touchpad though. There's no way of deactivating the fact that it keeps scrolling when my fingers reach the bottom or top of the touchpad. This is annoying, as i can't see when it will start scrolling automatically, it just suddenly starts. Another thing is that when i start scrolling with two fingers, and then lift a finger to navigate the mouse instead, it keeps scrolling until i lift both fingers off the trackpad, and then i can start to navigate. This feels very unneccessary, and it didn't do this on my old Asus computer.  Is there a general workaround for the sloppy driver, or do i have to live with these "features"? Best regards,Andreas

Answer:U430 touchpad continues scrolling after lifting one finger

Hi AndreasAH,

Welcome to Lenovo Community!

As per the query we understood that you are facing issue with touchpad not scrolling in your U430 laptop.

Try to reduce the touchpad sensitivity and check for the issue. Also try to uninstall the driver and reinstall the driver and check for the issue.

Click here for the drivers for windows 7 and 8.

I just upgraded my Yoga 2 Pro to windows 10 and my touchpad was acting crazy--for example, I could only get a window to scroll when it was out of focus.  I tried reinstalling my touchpad drivers, and it took about 5 attempts to get it working at a basic functionality.  However, this process caused an egregious change to basic scrolling behavior.  When I used to scroll with two fingers, I could stop scrolling by lifting one finger, and my mouse would return to being a cursor.  Now, when I lift one finger, it continues to scroll, and it will only stop scrolling once I lift the second finger.  So if I'm moving my cursor around, and I drop a finger down for just a brief moment, I won't stop scrolling until I completely remove my hand from the touchpad. I tried reinstalling the driver, I tried installing the Lenovo Windows 10 touchpad driver, (64-bit)

I just bought a Yoga 3 14" and I have an issue with the touchpad: when I use the two finger scrolling function, it doesn't stop scrolling unless I lift both fingers off the touchpad. All other notebooks I have used before stopped scrolling when I lifted just one finger, alowing me to resume controlling the pointer with just one finger. This is very annoying, and I would like to know how to change this behaviour.

Thanks

For the last month or so my mouse pointer erratically jumps to a specific area of the screen and then continues to jump around in a vertical line in that area (upper half, slightly to the left). Hugely annoying. But happens erratically, one day it may not happen at all or happen rarely, other days it is constantly an issue.  Originally assumed it was a problem with the touchscreen, but disabling the touchscreen didn't help. Disabling the touchpad also didn't help, but this is a little weird since even if I uninstall the touchpad driver it somehow comes back by itself. No problem in safe mode.  If I try installing another driver in Safe Mode it seems to keep it, but when I reboot to normal mode the problem is back Clearly seems to be a software issue since everything is fine in Safe Mode, but not sure where I'm getting the problem. Have tried several other touchpad drivers without improvement Huge pain! Any suggestions?

Hi,
I have the brand new Dell XPS 13 9350 with Windows 10. When I use the touchpad with two fingers to scroll down on websites the content "jumps" back up some lines. This happens when lifting the fingers from the touchpad.
It occurs in Chrome and Edge and is pretty annoying because I'm losing focus on the page I'm reading everytime I use two finger scrolling.
Any idea how this can be fixed? I found no driver for touchpad on Dells support page for the XPS 13 and I'm not sure if I should use Synaptic drivers ...
Thanks in advanceFrank

Answer:Dell XPS 13 9350 touchpad two finger scrolling "jumps"

I can also confirm problems with my brand new XPS13 which i received today. For me the touchpad is, let's say, unresponsive.
If i start scrolling up or down with two fingers it needs 1-2 seconds of scrolling before it starts scrolling on the screen. This is VERY annoying!
I mean the scrolling on my 7 year old Sony Vaio was better than this....
How to fix it?! The problem appears in every program

I have purchase multiple xps 13 and inspiron 13 laptops and observe the same issues.  I tend to use the touch pad with my right hand's index finger, and click the touchpad button with my left hand's index finger.  It's a quick way to get things done.  Many in my organization do this, too and have been running into problems.
However, quite frequently (but not all the time) when I click the button with my left hand the cursor jumps to another location on the screen.  Frequently this is the lower-left corner of the screen, but sometimes it is the upper right, too. This causes different windows to come into focus, or it activates the start menu.  Really , really annoying, and it happens on both laptop models.  Our previous Lenovo Yoga 2 Pro and Acer laptops did not have this issue.
I think this has to do with the touch pad thinking that the user has two fingers on the touch pad and moves the cursor thinking the finger jumped around the pad.  Otherwise the gestures and movement of the touchpad is fine.
Is this a known issue to Dell?  It's really aggravating and other users in my organization are complaining as well.  I may need to return the lot (3 XPS 13, 5 Inspiron 13 machines ) and look at different hardware.

Mouse pointer works well, until some minutes pass and then it starts to jump around or dissapppearing completely. it happens only for a few seconds and totally randomly, but it never stops. I have a 510S-14IKB Laptop (ideapad), with drivers 'HID compliant mouse' and 'Synaptic pointing device' under the Mice and other pointing devices. I have a system that runs Win 98Hebrew Edition with an optical Genius mouse and quite often the pointer on the screen will just jump to what appears to be random places on the screen.. most annoying when it jumps to right above the X to close a window right when you were about to click on something!! I have checked for spyware and malware through several different means and the system consistantly comes up clean.

Any Ideas????

Answer:Pointer/mouse Jumps

To run System File Checker:

1. Click the Start button, point to Programs, point to Accessories, and then point to Select System Tools.
2. Click System Information.
3. On the menu bar, click Tools.
4. Click System File Checker.
5. Choose Scan for altered files

I've found running the system file checker often relieved this symptom, but a word of caution: I'm not certain that 98's version of the system file checker is as reliable as that in later versions of Windows.

For no apparent reason the mouse pointer has started jumping randomly over the screen. At times it goes on a half-minute or so round-the-world trip, activating a lot of blank menus and options. I've had to shut down the PC a couple of times today because I totally lost control of what was going on. This just started yesterday. Any ideas?
Thank you.

I share my desktop (Windows 7) with my partner. However, my mouse, which is plugged in to my computer and is a Logitech US Laser Mouse, jumps around when I start up my desktop or when my partner and I need to change access. To stop the mouse jumping, I have had to adjust the mouse settings daily.

I have tried different mouse units but without any luck. However, when I go to:
Devices and Printers
USB Laser Mouse
right click, Mouse Settings
Hardware
there seems to be two devices showing. I am wondering if this is causing my computer some confusion on start up. The two settings are:
HID-Complaint mouse - mice and other point devices
USB Input Device - Human Interface device
Should one or other be deleted, so my computer is not confused or in conflict on start-up? I am not sure which setting applies to my Logitech corded mouse.

Thank you for any assistance.

hi sub2013,

Thank for using Lenovo Community Forums!

Try Going to the Device setting of your touchpad,
Go to Control Panel > Hardware and sound / Mouse
Under mouse properties, on top the last tab should be the settings tab of your touchpad it's either Synaptics or Elan,
click the device on the list then click on settings.
 Spoiler (Highlight to read)
Now you will have the device settings interface
try looking for two option,

One is sensitivity Try reducing it,
and the other will be Palm Check Move the bar and check works for you.

You can also try downloading a driver from synaptics http://www.synaptics.com/resources/drivers
see if that works. make sure to un-install the old one first before installing a new one.

Hope this helps,
Cheers!

My mouse pointer keeps jumping all around the screen, activating menus, dialog boxes, windows, etc., sometimes (almost) deleting or changing things. I'm using an AOpen, PS/2, wired, 2-button mouse and awaiting the delivery of a new, Microsoft Basic USB Optical mouse, which may solve all my problems with this one. Until then, I'm stuck with a system that's practically unusable. Below is my HijackThis info. I hope it gives you what you need. I appreciate your help. Thank you.

I've also attached the extra.txt and Panda online scan report to this message.

Answer:Mouse pointer jumps all over the screen

TechSupport Gurus: Would you believe this . . . ???? Just as I sent the previous message (with the HijackThis info) to your forum, there was a knock on my door and a neighbor presented me with a package containing my long-awaited Microsoft Basic USB Optical mouse. It had been mis-delivered to his address by FedEx. If I had only received it a minute earlier, I would not have sent my previous message or now be writing this message!!! I immediately removed my old mouse from its PS/2 socket and plugged in the new mouse to the USB port and BEHOLD!!! The mouse was detected and my pointer jumping problem is gone!!!!

My theory is that some recent Microsoft update (all of which I download and install religiously) made the assumption that _all_ mice at this stage of the Windows game is either a USB mouse or at least is a wheel-mouse. So (I think) the problems I was having was just a mouse function that was looking for a wheel to twirl when there was none. Whatever, I'm back where I want to be. Thank you for being there for folks like me when we need you! Where else could we turn? Thanks again!!!

I have a lenovo think pad x220 tablet using on a wireless network, if I am not constantly moving the mouse pointer (regardless if I use the touch pad or a mouse) it will suddenly jump to a different point on the screen, opens programs on its own. It took a long time to write this message due to the cursor jumping off the typing area. When i place the cursor back to whatever I am doing, a little picture of a keyboard comes up. When the computer is sitting idle it even occurs, you can watch the mouse pointer disappear and reappear in a different spot on the screen. It highlights desktop icons, opens programs. I am starting to wonder if someone has a remote connection and is messing with me. Sometimes it happens quickly and other times slower, it is worst when I first turn on the computer. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds not good, did you tried to connect a external mouse to check if this happens with it? If not, then try it.
But a good idea would be to bring your machine to a authorised service partner, to let him check if your machine has a hardware related issue.

I had the same problem with my Tecra S1, so I sent it to my local service partner and they fixed it with exchanging the touchpad and the keyboard.

Hey, for a few weeks now i've been experiencing some dodgy glitches with my pointer, it will occasionally just jump from wherever it is on screen all the way to the left hand side.

It's highly annoying especially when playing games as it causes me to do a 180 degree spin and completely lose track of where the hell I am. Real problem to do any sort of gaming as I can be trying to click something and it'll jump across the screen and make me click somewhere else and completely ruins the fun for me.

Anybody with an idea what the problem is and how I may be able to fix it would be a superstar Thanks in advance Tech Support Guy!

I recently got a replacement for my old laptop which had some graphic problem. Really happy with the customer service of Lenovo. Only untill my new laptop started giving me problems within 1 week. The problem is everytime I plug in the adapter to charge the laptop the mouse pointer starts jumping up and down. Its shaky and does not travel in a straight line. This occurs only when the laptop is on charge. When I remove the adapter it behaves normally and fine. I googled this problem and saw that many other people have faced the similar problem. Is there a solution for this or is it a hardware problem ? I am really dissappointed since the new laptop has started giving problems within 1 week.

I am in an IT department at a small clinic in Idaho.  We have several X220's and X230's here.   There are several machines that have issues with the touch screen just stopping.  Nothing with the pen/finger will work.  The mouse still works, but nothing with the pen. We created a script that restarts the TabletInputService, the docs would run this script when the pen stops working.  That script works a majority of the time, but not always.  One of our docs just received a brand new X230 Type 3435-2TU 2 weeks ago.  She pen has stopped working several times in that two weeks.  She said that script only works a few times.  She has to reboot for it to work again....so rebooting works.  We can't have docs rebooting 3-4 times a day. Does anyone know of a permanent fix for this? Please help!!Desperate IT Guy!!

I'm having trouble with my UltraNav Mousepad. It jumps all over the place and moves when I'm lifting my finger up before tapping. I'm really frustrated and miss the old t61 style mouse pad. I like the features but they are useless without a stable tracking / pointing. I have the latest drivers. I have changed every setting available but the mouse pad just won't settle down. Everything else about the x230 is great. I'm pleased with the keyboard but the mousepad is driving me crazy. Does any body else have this problem and has any body solved it? Thanks,dev6

I have run into a problem I haven't seen before on a HP desktop running Win 7 Ultimate x64. The users reported that when they open a window, ~30 instances of the window open at once. The error is intermittent, but since they shut down the PC after each use it may come and go with each boot.

I looked at the machine and it functioned fine after several reboots, but eventually I was able to see some strange results. I didn't see the multiple windows open, but I did have some input issues. The mouse pointer would jump all over the screen and applications would open that were never clicked. The right click did not function correctly. Sometimes the context menu would flash on and off and sometimes nothing. I tried an alternate mouse and using a different USB port with identical results. I have run virus scans, malware scans and a registry scan, but no dice.

Anyone have any ideas. I am stumped.

It does sound like malware to me, you could try this; USB Driver - General Fix for Problems[2]=Hardware%20and%20Drivers it may be of help if different mice are used on this machine.

Hello, I bought a x230 Tablet from ebay.  It didn't come with a fingerprint reader.  Is there a part that I can buy to add a fingerprint reader for it below the LCD screen? I've looked at https://download.lenovo.com/parts/ThinkPad/x230t_fru_bom_20121010.pdf and found this:04W6941 LCD ButtonBzlASM wFP CM204W6845 w/FP for Comet-2 I noticed from google images that 04W6941 is only the panel and doesn't include the fingerprint itself.  Is this true?I've searched google about 04W6845 and I couldn't figure out if it's what I need. Thank you for your help.

Hello, thanks for looking at my post, I hope you can help. I have had my x230 (2306CTO) for about 10 months now, with no problem until I updated to windows 8.1. After running windows 8.1 for 9 days with out a hiccup, my finger print reader stopped working. And when I try to enroll finger prints using the lenovo software (which I have updated, but to avail) I get the error code "E7210005", With the messages:"Cannot enroll user""Cannot update passport""Cannot find finger print device" However, In device manager The touchip finger print reader is reported as "This device is working correctly". Everything is up to date, including leno software, Windows and BIOS. I have un-installed the finger print driver, When I "scan for new hardware" the device is detected and re-installed. I uninstalled the lenovo fingerprint software and reinstalled, but that didnt seem to be the problem.  Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advanceNick

I just received a new compay issues computer: x230 running Windows Pro 64 bit, Office 2010 and an SSD.  Unfortunately, out of the box the pointing devices, either the ultranav or an external mouse and keyboard (MSFT Sculpt), suffer from auto clicking and inability to input text...the text writes over itself...cursor moves forward and then backspaces on itself. The external keyboard worked fine when tested on other notebooks at home.  I did unistall the MSFt keyboard SW on the x230 to see if that made a difference.  Nope.  My IT team remotely updated all drivers, etc. So, everthing system-wise is up to date.  They seemed to have fixed it for about an hour, then it went back to this behavior, including opening multiple instances of applications on its own. The PC is unusable. Thoughts? Halfcalf18

The touchpad is defective. If you have an external mouse, try to disable it (either in BIOS or OS) while you get a replacement.

I bought X230 about 3 weeks ago, and got a very bothersome problem with the track pointer. Mouse pointer isn't moved sometimes. I found that this problem happened when I try to use it after the screen saver ends. The pointer is moved again if I make the laptop hibernate mode and wake it up. I guess there is some problem on UltraNav driver that it cannot recognize the event from the screen saver to the normal mode. Test this issue by entering the screen saver mode, and wake the laptop again and again. So, you can find that point stuck problem ocassionally. I hope this problem is fixed soon...

What driver version of the UltraNav do you have? The driver version I have is 16.1.1.0 which is the latest version.  If you need to update that driver you can run TVT System update or download the single driver here: Synaptics UltraNav driver for Windows 7 If your driver is current, that delay seems to be a normal

Dear Support,
I have a Dell VOSTRO 3560 laptop that has an Elan Tech SmartPad touchpad. I like its responsiveness very much.
Unfortunately, I recently spilled a bit of coffee and some of that went under the touch pad left and right buttons. The buttons stopped functioning but the touch pad itself is still very good.
Even before the spill I rarely used the buttons. I always used the touch pad to tap to click and two finger tap to right-click.Strangely though, after the spill when the hardware buttons stopped working, the tapping on the touch pad also stopped working. I made sure that the touch pad still can do tap clicking by uninstalling the Dell TouchPad driver and reverting to the Microsoft Mouse PS2 driver. In that case I can use the tap to click feature but only for 1 finger tap. I do not get any other feature as the driver is the simple generic MS one.
My question is would it be possible to still use the Elan tech provided (Dell TouchPad) driver and somehow configure it to accept the tap to click and two finger tap to right-click? This in addition to all the remaining scrolling and gesture support that the driver implements? I tried all the Dell Touchpad settings applet but nothing changed. Perhaps a registry value setting in the section for the elantech?
What seems to be happening now is that the driver is doing some hardware diagnostics, determining that the hardware buttons left and right are not working, and consequently completely disabling left and right click comm... Read more

The cursor on my T61 will suddenly jump to a new spot on whatever page (Word, email, VBA) I'm editing. Sometimes it's as though an invisible gremlin has turned the scrollwheel on the mouse, because (depending on the application) the screen can jump by the amount it would move by one click of the scrollwheel. I see from other posts that the TouchPad might be at fault, but I have mine turned completely off. It happens whether the computer is docked or undocked and whether I'm using a wired mouse or a wireless mouse. I'm running Vista Ultimate and I think everything is up to date on the machine. The problem started about a month or two ago. Any ideas? THANK YOU!

Answer:Cursor jumps on T61 even with TouchPad turned off

Strategist, welcome to the forum, does this only happen when you're typing on the keyboard? There is a setting in the UltraNav console for the TrackPoint called, I believe in English, "Press to Select". This is a setting which allows you to tap on the TrackPoint to effect a mouse click. If the mouse pointer is somewhere other to where you are writing, by accidentally tapping it, it will send the cursor there. Try disabling it, or better, replace the TP cap with the original "hairy" one, it's more difficult to hit as it has less surface area.  Hope this helps

HiI have a Yoga 720 that is new and I have adjusted the touchpad settings but the touchpad remains extremely sensitive and the cursor jumps around when I am typing and often deletes text or makes typing very difficult.  In the past I have downloaded the Touch Freeze program which helped but it is not helping on this computer with Windows 10.  Any solutions?  Thanks!Valerie

Answer:touchpad too sensitive and cursor jumps

Hi there, Vlk               -

Thank you for writing in to the Lenovo Forum - happy to have you here today.

Some of the most common problems with touchpads are:

The touchpad starts and stops working or has never worked.
The touchpad is too sensitive, or it moves the cursor too fast.
The cursor sometimes jumps to another spot in a document or on the desktop.

Some of the most common causes of these problems are:

The touchpad has been enabled or disabled. The touchpad might have been mistakenly enabled or disabled. The touchpad can be enabled or disabled in several ways, including using keyboard shortcuts (key combinations on the keyboard), using Device Manager, or by using the touchpad settings in Control Panel.

The touchpad settings might be set incorrectly. Most touchpads have adjustable settings and these settings can make the touchpad function improperly if set incorrectly.

The sensitivity of the touchpad is set too high. If the sensitivity is set to high on the touchpad, any slight touch can cause the cursor to randomly jump to another location of the screen. To resolve this issue, lower the sensitivity setting of the touchpad using the touchpad settings.

Please try doing this below step:
Go to Control Panel, click Hardware and Sound, click Mouse then select Elan option. You can enable the features you need HTH

Update us how it goes.

It does not seem to be possible to use 2 finger tap to effect a right click. The touchpad drivers UI only allow the user to specify that a two finger click effects a right click. However it should be possible to use a 2 finger tap instead, like it is on most Synaptics touchpads. I've tried the setting the usual registry value 2FingerTapAction=2. However this does not work with the drivers that come with the Yoga 2 Pro (17.0.8.7). I've also tried it with the drivers that come with the Yoga 13 (17.0.8.4) and the Yoga 2 13 (17.0.14.71) but none of them allow it. I've found that older drivers 16.5.2.0 that come with the Yoga 11s allow it but these aren't good enough because they crash every now and then requiring a reboot. Has anyone been able to get the Yoga 2 Pro touchpad drivers make a 2 finger tab effect a right-click?

Answer:Yoga 2 Pro - Touchpad 2 Finger Tap

The closest you can get is a two finger click anywhere on the trackpad, this is in the device settings.

Twist 3347-2VU - Synaptics driver 16.2.19.9, Auto Scroll Utility 2.01, BIOS version 1.57 The issue that I am having is that the cursor will jump to the lower left hand corner when I go from moving the cursor with my index finger, to clicking with my thumb. From what I can conclude, the touchpad thinks that I am dragging my finger across the touchpad, instead of reading it as a track (index finger) and a click (thumb). It doesn't seem to happen if I track with my index finger, lift my hand completely off the touchpad, and then click with my thumb. All 97 of my Twists have this issue, and I even had one of the palmrests replace to remove that variable. I've contacted Lenovo tech support 4 times over this issue, and they believe that it's an advance user issue, and not an issue that warrants attention. They requested that I post on this forum to hopefully find other user that might have either found a fix or to raise enough of a 'stink' to have them work on the driver. I look forward to your thoughts.

Hello,

I've had a Equium laptop for quite some time now.
But all of a sudden the touchpad seems jumpy and every now and then just stops, waits... then continues. This is very annoying because i play games and it becomes a problem ive tried everthing: from a System restore to reinstalling the drivers.

Answer:Equium A300D-16c touchpad coursor jumps

Hmm? if system restore doesn?t help to solve this issue, then a hardware problem might be possible.

I read about a similar issue while typing? this has been solved by BIOS update.
Maybe you should check this if the BIOS update would help you?

Otherwise it might be a hardware problem which could be solved by touchpad replacement.

While scrolling on the touchpad on my Lenovo G50-70, the cursor will regularly jump to the side and start moving back and forth across the screen.  This has been happening since I first bought the computer several months ago but has gotten progressively worse and happens nearly all the time while scrolling.  It occasionally happens while I am not scrolling as well.  I contacted Lenovo and the contact tried to correct the problem (though he did not explain what he was doing).  He told me that to do any more work I would need to purchase a maintenance plan.  However, this has been a problem since the day I bought the computer so it is clearly a defect.  Any advice on how to fix this problem?

Question: x230 Touchpad

Like many people I have found the touchpad of the x230 nearly impossible to use. The cursor is moving like on a grid and jumping during clicking. Personally I find the former issue more problematic than the latter. The problem seems widespread, so I open this thread to collect my findings about it. Some of it is written from a Linux perspective, but the problem is not Linux-specific.PLEASE, LENOVO, (if you read us), HELP US WITH THIS!!  No one seems to have found a solution yet. Driver updates seem mostly not to help. Let us know as much as possible about the nature and the status of the error, even if you do not intend to do anything about it.0.) Here are, I think, the most relevant links dealing with the problem. This is the longest discussion out there, I think. Shows many people affected, and no success with several driver updates plus some rather disheartening conclusions. Here and here are bug reports on Ubuntu, one following up the other. The first thread contains several tweaks for the xorg.conf, that seem to "make it better but not perfect" for some. For me only the first one works, but at the cost of the cursor becoming super-slow. The latter thread claims there is a fix, but as of last week the problem was still present in the daily build of Ubuntu 14.04.And this is a video showing the problem. There are many other threads (just google "jumpy cursor x230"), but all others I saw did only suggest driver updates. Some claim that solves the problem, others don't.1.) ... Read more

I'm in contact with about handred x230 owners in my country. As far as I know the only one guy said about grid-moving (jumpy) behaviour of touchpad. He has found solution for Linux like you, the link #2. But there is a problem with cursor self moving, I agree, without solution yet.4. any chance the sensitivity settings of your touchpad is too slow?5. is this behaviour observed with both battery and power supply?

Hi, qrosh

I did some research and found the User Guide for the X230i. According to this, two multitouch inputs are possible if you have a multitouch screen. These inputs can be used for things like zooming in or out, scrolling, and rotating images. You can read the User Guide here.

Hope it helps,

Hi I bought my Y500 a few days ago and happy with it in general. However, one day the two-finger-tap (for right click) on the touchpad stopped working. Below is a description. Everything else as far as I can tell, including two-finger scroll and one-finger tap and so forth, are working fine, but the two-finger tap stopped working even though it worked fine for a few days. I have a suspicious as to what caused it but I'm not entirely sure. In any case I think it's most likely a bug, and probably software. One day I went into "control panel" -> "mouse" -> "device settings" -> "settings..." -> "Scrolling" -> "two-finger scrolling" -> "enable coasting". I played with coasting for a while, and soon disabled it again because I didn't really like it. However, it was then that I noticed that my two-finger tap stopped working. I have doubled-checked that "control panel" -> "mouse" -> "device settings" -> "settings..." -> "clicking" -> "two-finger click" is set to "secondary click (context menu, special drag)", but the two-finger click still doesn't work, even after a restarted. I downloaded the latest driver (version 16.2.18.0) and it still didn't work. I uninstalled the driver and installed it again and it still doesn't work. Now I like using the touchpad, but really hate living without two-finger tap for right-clicking. Please help me with this, thank you in anticipation.

It seems that the problem might be that while the Synaptics touchpad device is a PS/2 device, it keeps getting software inteference (of some sort) by being recognised as an SMB (system management bus) device. What solved the problem for me was to go to "device manager" -> "system devices", locate "Synaptics SMB Driver", and either disable it or delete it. The touchpad two-finger-tap should then immediately start working.

I have ALPS touchpad and currently use driver v.8.201.1611.222 (i have tried previous drivers to). Shouldn't there be anyway to emulate middle mouse click with the touchpad?

Hi there, Just purchased a U430 IdeaPad and have a couple of questions re the touch pad: 1) Is it normal for the touchpad to not feel real tight, i.e., when you tap arouond it lightly, not enough for a full click, it feels kind of lose and you can hear a tapping or clicking sound? 2} Does the touchpad use a two-finger tap, not two-finger click?  I.e., just tap with two-fingers but not actually pressing all the way down for a full click. The full two-finger click does work. Thanks. GRN

Answer:U430 IdeaPad Touchpad Two-Finger Tap

The answer to your question on the two finger tap is yes, it is supposed to work, but no, it is not working. I have submitted the same question myself, but see that you have gotten no response to yours, which is a little disheartening. Lenovo techs, are you listening?

Hi, I recently bought the Yoga 710 and I really like it, but I have ran into a problem with the touchPad. Everything worked fine up until the last few days. The three and four finger swiping gestures no longer work (I double checked the settings. Three finger gestures are on). Every other gesture works (one finger, two finger).  Anyboby else having issues with this. From what I have been able to find online, it looks like an issue that arises when you put your computer into sleep mode. Not really sure where to go from here as far as a fix. Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks!

I have a Y40 which has an ELAN touchpad.  I did not see a way to enable two finger tap in the configuration application included with it.  There has been some discussion here about a fix, but that only applies to the Synaptics touchpad.  Does anyone know of a fix for this?

Hello I have recently purchased a Flex 15 with the Elan touchpad. I have noticed that I do not have an option to two finger tap for a right click. The settings for the Elan Touchpad provide me a way to two finger click (where i physically click the touchpad) but not for the 2 finger tap. This seems like a weird oversight since that functionality is so very common now for all laptops. Does anyone else have this issue? is there a way to get this functionality back?

Answer:Flex 15 with Elan touchpad two finger tap

I've got the same problem. The ALPS driver that takes care of the settings even include this feature, but it doesn't work.

So I recently purchased a new laptop that has Windows 10 installed (Acer Aspire E5-573G) and I would like to change the way the touchpad taps work. Specifically, I would like a middle click from a three finger tap. It's an ELAN touchpad, if that makes any difference, and I have installed the latest drivers.
Everything I looked up on google said to either use some program from ELAN, or to edit the registry. There currently is no program installed on here from ELAN, and all the google results I could conjure up while looking for a download for the program are people wanting to get rid of it. The only thing in my programs and features from ELAN is what I believe is the driver - "ELAN HIDI2C Filter Driver X64 13.6.3.1_WHQL"
The suggested registry edit also isn't available for me. That is to say, the path "HKEY_CURRENT_USER > SOFTWARE > Elantech" does not exist.
I'm not sure what the correct way I should be going about this is. Everything else regarding the touchpad works as intended, but I have no way of customizing it beyond the settings in windows. And since I have zero interest in having Cortana or action center being on my computer let alone as mouse commands, those settings are completely worthless to me.

Just thought I'd share this here since I had no luck setting this up with the built in GUI for the Alps touchpad settings on my new Y50-70. Here are some registry settings I found that worked for adding right and middle click functionality to the 2 and 3 finger taps. I'm just posting since I had to dig around for awhile to find something that works, and I hope this helps save other people some time.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER > Software > Alps >Apoint > Guesture

"2TapSupport"=dword:00000003"Enable2Tap"=dword:00000001"2TapFunc"=dword:0000000d"2TapSetting"=dword:000000ff"2TapShow"=dword:00000009

Same for 3 tap except
3TapFunc uses 0d

As always, be careful with your registry.

Hello @ukx360 ,Thank you for visiting the HP Support Forums and Welcome. I have read about your HP Spectre x360 Notebook and mouse freezing. Here is a document on how to troubleshoot the mouse and Touchpad sensitivities. If you will go to the section on Adjusting TouchPad, you will see a restore defaults button. If you select that it will restore the original settings.Hope this fixes things up.Thanks.

I own a T61 Thinkpad (type=6465), bought in 2008 and running Ubuntu 10.04. I recently ordered from Lenovo/IBM Parts a new palm rest because its touchpad buttons don't work properly anymore. I was told that I needed a palm rest with the id 42W2958, which had been substituted, for some reason, to part 42W3821 (they said it was compatible though). The new palm rest I received is identical to the original one I had, except for one small but annoying detail: the touchpad hardware doesn't support two finger scrolling, which I use heavily. I tried everything I could to "activate" it (if such a thing is possible) but to no avail. With this command, it's very clear that both hardwares are different: $ xinput list-props "SynPS/2 Synaptics TouchPad" | grep Capa
Synaptics Capabilities (291):1, 1, 1, 1, 1 # <- original touchpad (2-finger-scroll = second to last column)
Synaptics Capabilities (291):1, 1, 1, 0, 0 # <- new touchpadCan someone help me figure out a way to solve this problem, in terms of part # I should (try) to replace with, or maybe some magical software solution that I'd have overlooked?

I am wondering if anyone knows why the Elan touchpad does not offer two finger tap support like every other touchpad of any worth? I love my U530 Laptop, but am reminded of this shortcoming every time I use it.

Answer:Why is there no two finger tap option for the Elan Touchpad?

hi tsfine,

Don't you see the twp finger gesture under the Multifinger options on the ELAN Properties?

If you don't see it there, try to reinstall a different ELAN touchpad driver and or apply the registry fix from the solution in this thread and observe.

Let me know if this works for you.

does anyone know how to enable the touchpad to recognize multiple fingers touching it like on other Thinkpads (and various other notebooks as well)?

Answer:Touchpad Multiple Finger support?

You have to have multitouch enabled touchpad (depends on hardware, not software). So it depends on model of your computer (for ex. lenovo thinkpad t400s has multitouch touchpad).

Hi, I recently purchased this awesome notebook (that one with 256gb ssd and 1tb hdd), which I find almost perfect. There is one flaw thats driving me crazy: Everytime I need to fiddle through text, the cursor jumps back to its origin position (while moving like 1-2mm at the time). It's not that erratic behaviour while typing. This problem just happens, when my movement is really little, but often. Like when I need to point the cursor one letter left or right. Normally I expect (from my 10 year experience with souch touchpads), that the cursor stays where I have left it right away, not where I left him 1 second before. It's so annoying, because it's happening again and again and again and again.  I tried to look this behavior up in the forums/internet, but all I can find is that erratic behavior problem while typing. And to be clear: I don't have this problem. The touchpad driver settings don't help me either. I hoped this is working as intended and could be turned off there. But I could't find an option which describes that behaviour. Hope you can help me here. Cheers and merry Christmas!

While typing, and NOT touching the touchpad, the cursor randomly jumps to a new location. It makes a mess of my documents and spreadsheets, as you can imagine. This appears to be caused by the weight of my wrists on the laptop (or by the heat from hands, suggested another poster), triggering the touchpad without actually touching it.  I have confirmed that using an external mouse does not cause the problem, so it would seem to be the touchpad itself. I found this issue twice on this forum previously, but without answers or solutions. I also found this issue on outside forums, with 2 suggested remedies: 1. Bad touchpad, needs to be replaced-   several posters did this with success2. Remove some touchpad drivers- one poster did this with success As I am currently working outside the U.S., in a country that will not service this model, wondering what my options are. FYI, I am currently within the 45-day all-covered warranty, but it will be beyond 45 days when I get back to the States. Will the touchpad replacement still be covered after 45 days?

I have an HP Windows 7 computer that has been working fine until I attempted to install Chrome Browser.  Sometime afterward I noticed that my mouse curser would jump around erratically at times and if I try to left click on something, it doesn't work at all and I might have to wait 30 to 120 seconds for the mouse click to work again.  I de-installed Chrome, but the problem continues.  My Windows updates are all up to date, with the exception of the optional updates.  (I rarely install them because I never can figure out if they're necessary, so being safe rather than guess, I don't install optional updates).  This cursor problem has been going on for a few weeks and occasionally my keyboard doesn't seem to print out letters as typed.  There seems to be a lag at times, although that's not often.  Until the Chrome install, this computer has been perfect.  Any assist will be appreciated.

Answer:Mouse pointer jumps erratically and mouse clicking inoperative

I had an issue with this before when fixing a brothers computer which was badly infested with viruses. It took a couple days to get everything out. I don't just use the software I go into regedit and All the individual folders to remove the viruses. But I dont know if you have viruses that may slow down your computer But after I removed all His viruses well It stoped. His mouse jumped around like crazy would move to the side and not let you move it back for a while. But Idk for your situation.

Hello, Got my new X230 a few days ago.  Great little machine, but one thing that is driving me crazy is the touchpad.  Often times it gets stuck so that touching with one finger anywhere on the touchpad only causes the screen to scroll up/down (like when browsing for example).  While it's doing this, I am unable to click on anything else on the desktop or on a page.  It's as if the left mouse button was stuck.  And worse yet, I don't know how to get out of it.  Sometimes it'll be stuck like this for 30 seconds.  I keep pressing random keys until it eventually becomes unstuck.  But a few mintues later it becomes stuck again. I can't even figure out which one of my actions causes it to become stuck. I have tried disabling one-finger and two-finger scrolling, application gestures, palm check, edge tap filtering, scrolling region filtering, gesture filtering, but none of it solves my problem. Any ideas? FYI, my ThinkPad UltraNav driver version is 16.0.2.0.  Is this the latest? Thanks!

Answer:[X230] Sticky Touchpad

I'm having the exact same issue. It's driving me so crazy that I registered on this forum just to complain about it. You can recreate the issue by pressing both lower corners of the touchpad at the same time while the mouse is over a scroll bar. To get out of it, make sure the mouse is again over the scroll bar then click the left had side of the touchpad. I too have everything disabled in the touchpad settings, and I have no idea how to resolve this. Very irritating. BTW - 16.1.1.0 is the latest, but the problem still exists in that version.

Hi everyone, I am new to this forum. I got a X230 recently, and now have a issue with the touchpad. Some days ago, i found the touchpad sometimes didn't respond when i moved fingers on it (both one finger and two finger scrolling), but it respond to one finger click or two finger click (which is set as secondary click ). After i uninstall the drive and re-install, interesting things happened. I can't use two finger click guestures now. I happen to find that this guesture is working under administrator account. I am using win 8 pro 64-bit. Anyone knows what should i do? Thanks in advance. Ken X230 Win8 Pro

I just received my X230 in the mail and while overall its a fantastic machine, light, capable, wonderful keyboard, sturdy, the trackpad is absolutely atrocious and I'm not sure if it's supposed to be (since many reviewers have been singing its praises). When UltraNav or generic Synaptic drivers are installed, the accuracy/resolution of the trackpad is absolutely dismal. If I slowly drag my finger across it, the cursor moves in 5-7 px "blocks," resulting in horrificully low resolution, chunky movement. It makes clicking on ANYTHING accurately nigh impossible. If I uninstall all Synaptic drivers (including UltraNav), the resolution is better (moves more in 1-2 px blocks) however the trackpad is exceedingly sensitive and touching it causes erratic movement (although you can see that it is more finite than before). What exactly is wrong here? It worked just awful out o fthe box. Am I going crazy or is this the way the X230 actually is and Lenovo messed this thing up? For reference, I've used Apple laptops for the past 5 years and am very used to having a large, smooth, accurate and fast glass trackpad. This is world's apart. The TrackPoint is accurate but its movement is too slow and laborous for me to enjoy. Please advise...

I have the plain X230 (no touchscreen, not a tablet). I think the sub-version is 2306 CTO. I installed a 256GB SSD in the PCIe slot shortly after buying it, and did a clean install of Windows 8 Pro X64 onto it, on which I have done all the updates, up tp date. (I still have the 500GB HDD, used for storage, although I removed the OS from it. The system boots to the SSD.Of course after the clean install I installed all the necessary drivers, and have kept them up to date. For the touchpad and trackpad (is that what the pointing stick is callled?), I had installed the newest Synaptics-Lenovo drivers from the Lenovo X230 update page, for Win8 X64.I have had problems with the touchpad from the start. (I guess I am not the only one, as I have seen many posts about X230 touchpad problems.) In Mouse settings in Control Panel, I disabled most of the special features of the touchpad (like tapping, momentum, etc.) to try to make it function more normally. (I tried disabling almost everything, such as described in the thread at: http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/X-Series-ThinkPad-Laptops/x230-touchpad-All-bad-or-bad-units/td-p/866333... That helped with problems like jumpiness in pointing, unwanted clicks, etc., but not with other problems I describe in this thread.)I am not used to using a pointing stick, although occasionally I use it for something, when the touchpad is acting up. Also, I often use an external mouse. (Not always practical though--for instance, when working on one's lap, with... Read more

Answer:X230 Touchpad Problems

I also have issues with X230 toucpad (trackpad), but only on Linux. The "butttons-integrated"  touchpad works well under Windows 7, but when I installed Linux Ubuntu on it, the touchpad is almost unusable - left mouse button presses  make the cursor jump around the screen on every press, so it is very difficult to focus on web links or application menu buttons. As I am mostly using Linux, this infuriates me quite a bit. I dont have room for an extrernal mouse on my desk  so I cannot use this. And I dont like the red trackpoint thingie. Interestingly, the problem appears only when running Linux. In Windows, the cursor stays on focused point, no matter how much you press it. Therefore, it must be a software issue. When checking DMESG logs, it seems that the touchpad is detected as a generic ALPS pointing device by Ubuntu Linux. Probably can be fixed when the right driver is loaded. This is the only reason why I have not returned my X230 back to the shop. Then again - my situation might not be caused by the same reason as the post initiator has.
