Connecting the headphones on X230

Question: Connecting the headphones on X230

I bought a Lenovo X230 some weeks ago and I have an issue which I have been trying to solve ever since. The sound quality on the speakers is pretty decent, however when I use the headphones it's all terrible. The interesting thing is that I clearly perceive that there is some sort of program which alters the sound quality, like an equalizer preset or a driver, and activates a "headphone mode" which makes music sound terrible. This trigger takes like half a second to kick in from the moment I plug my headphones in, but during that half the sound is normal like in my other laptop. I am thinking it has to do with Lenovo Communication Utility, or the Dolby Profile thingy or Realtek drivers... but I cannot seem to find the problem. How do I solve this? Could I just use the Windows generic driver? Thanks for your help!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

So one of the main reasons that i switched from my edge 13, was that it had this really annoying bussing sound.I recieved my x230 today, and it turns out that this one has some background noise as well!!!! just plug in some good headphones and listen. It even works with earplugs, i used apple ones. youll hear a background noise. The noise is not very loud, but hard to not focus on once you've picked it up.this is unacceptable for a laptop with a price this high! are there any solutions for this?

Answer:noise on headphones out x230

hi elamre,

sorry to hear about hte issue you faced with your machine. But i just would like to know the back ground noise that you mentioned inyour thread, does this happen when playing music or vidoes or just as you plug it in with out anything playing.

I'm not sure what exactly is causing it but could be some settings in the control panel that need to be adjusted. But do let me know on your outcome.

My bluetooth headphones (bluephonic) keep disconnecting. I've gone into the bluetooth settings and disabled the "shut off device to save power" setting and that doesn't help. They will play sounds for 5 or 10 minutes, and then disconnect every time. I have to go back into bluetooth devices to re-connect every time. This doesn't happen on my iPhone. All of my bluetooth drivers say they are up to date.  I'm on AC power, not battery. Windows 7X64. While on AC, I'm on high performance power mode. The bthserv service is running, the btwdins service is stopped. There aren't any other bluetooth services listed on the task manager.  Suggestions?

Hi, when I connect headphones to jack on laptop's body speakers are turned off and sound goes into headphones (and Windows (8 RTM) detects that correctly). But when I connect headphones into jack on ultrabase, speakers are turned off, but nothing goes out of headphones (nor Windows seems to detect the change). Any idea what to look for?

Answer:Using headphones jack on ultrabase with X230

As it turned out, by default when you dock laptop to ultrabase it drives sound to DisplayPort. Without installing Lenovo drivers for graphic card and sound card you can't change it to put sound into jack on ultrabase.

I have an x230 laptop with bluetooth. I have enabled the bluetooth radio and tried to add my bluetooth headphones. Everytime I go to add a bluetooth device, my headphones are not discovered. My bluetooth on my laptop has discovered other bluetooth devices, so I know it works. I have connected my bluetooth headphones to my iphone through bluetooth and that works. So I'm guessing there is some compatibility issue between the two. My friend tried using his windows phone to discover the headphones and that also did not work.

Answer:Cannot connect to Sennheiser MM 100 headphones from bluetooth on x230

Hi, ajbrewer93

You may have a driver issue here, though it is certainly weird that Microsoft products aren't seeing the headphones. I would make sure that both your Bluetooth and BIOS are up to date before anything else. Also, if you can, try connecting the headphones to another computer and see if that works. You can find both of those drivers here. You can filter the search by operating system and device type to make searching faster.

Good luck, and let me know how it goes
Adam

Hello, My new X230 with Windows 8 Pro is not muting the external speakers when I plug in the headphones. I have to reboot it with the headphones plugged in so they are muted, but when I unplug them I can't get it to work again until I reboot. The drivers are updated and double-checked with the ones you download from Lenovo. If I use a Bluetooth headset it does mute the external speaker, so most likely it's a jack-related software thing. Any pointers? It's getting really annoying, I can't listen to music or have private conversations unless I reduce the volume to an unhearable minimum. Jose

I have a new X230 which came with Intel WiDi installed.  I am trying to connect it to a Philips Smart TV which the folks at Philips tell me should work with WiDi.  The TV is Miracast enabled. When I run the Intel WiDi software, the Philips TV appears as an available device. When I click to connect, the software asks for a PIN number and at the same time a PIN number appears on the TV screen.  I enter this in the box provided by the software. There is a pause of 15 - 45 seconds, and then there is a message on the TV : "Step 2/2.  Connected.  Starting playback."This is quickly replaced by a message on the TV "Failed to playback".The WiDi software remains at the "Connecting..." screen. I feel I am pretty close to getting this to work, but not sure what to do to actually succeed.   I have already updated the WiDi software and drivers to the latest available on the Lenovo site: Intel WiDi - 4.2.19.0Intel HD Graphics driver - 9.18.10.3359Intel PROSet/Wireless software 16.1.3 Any thoughts or suggestions would be very welcome. WaywardX230 (2325-77G) running Windows 7 Pro 64 bit.

Hey xav!I had exactly same problem as you.My Lenovo is Y570 and my Philips is PFL7008k.After hours and hours of exploring and investigating I concluded that problem is Philips TV so I've upgraded TVs firmware to latest.Currently it's version 173.44.0 for my TV model. It's not perfect version (see Philips support site) but WiDi is working like a charm. Only problem is delay of mouse cursor but it's pretty expected...All further information about upgrade of your TV firmware you can find on Philips site.Cheers!

Hi,I've got a Lenovo X230 with the 19+ Slice Battery. When I drop the X230 into the 19+ Slice Battery, the laptop reboots. When I eject (via Windows menu) the 19+ Slice Battery, then remove the X230 from the battery, the laptop reboots. Once it is running, it is fine, and the battery shows up in the power manager, but it is annoying to not be able to connect and remove the battery whilst the laptop is running. Is there something wrong with my battery? Does anyone else have this issue? Thanks.

Hello, I have a issue with my Lenovo X230 (P# 23060CTO) laptop, I have two access points at my residence, the primary access point is a D-Link DIR-655 and my secondary access point is a  D-Link DAP-1522. My X230 does not have any issues connecting to the primary access or any other access point I have tried to connect to thus far but when it connects to the secondary access point I get the notification limited or no connectivity. The SSID for the two access points are different, I have the  D-Link DAP-1522 access point in AP mode to extend my wireless network.  I believe my limited of not connectivity issues is a problem with my X230 because I have had guests be able to connect to the secondary access point and not have the limited or no connectivity issue while being connected for over an hour. OK, I just bought some Sony wireless headphones in the USA for use on a UK PC - stupid idea, I know, but two seperate Sony employees assured me that the only problem was the power plug, which would need a UK adaptor - which isn't a problem. Now I'm back, and the the black square-ish optical cable that is supposed to be universal does not have a plug in any of my PCs. There is a plug that it will go into on the back of a Hi-Fi system, but the line-in/out plugs on the PCS are round and smaller. Is the correct plug hidden away on my PC, do I need to get an adaptor and if so where, or do I need to send them an irritated email?PS. the headphones also include analogue plugs, which look a similar sort of size to the line in/outs on my PC, but there is no cable included for them.

Hello everyone. I use an ASUS G46W ROG edition, and I'd like to be able to connect two headphones to it so that two people can listen to audio off of my computer at the same time.

I know those Y-cables/adaptors exist, but I'm not looking to use those, as they merely split the audio signal - I need something that'll duplicate the audio signal, then output it to two different devices.

Instead, I'd rather use some sort of USB audio card that has atleast two 3.5mm output ports, and will output audio out of both ports.

Does something like this exist? If so, then could you give me some recommendations?

Hello,
I have a Dell Inspiron 3537 and trying to connect my Sony MDR-ZX770BN headphones. They are able to pair via bluetooth, but when I try to connect them to the laptop to make them the only audio device, it says that there is no connection at all. I've tried downloading new drivers such as Bios and new bluetooth drivers, but I can't even do that properly. The bluetooth driver won't download because it says to 'activate bluetooth wireless switch' which I clearly have.
I've attached a screenshot of the no connection shown between the headphones and the laptop, even though bluetooth is on..
Any help is much appreciated!

Hi there,

I wasn't sure where to post this, but I hope that this is the right section, excuse me if it isn't.

As described in the title, I'm struggling to fix an issue, where upon connecting headphones both to the back and the front panel, applications begin to crash. One of them is a game. I've described the problem already to the developers, however they claim it's something to do with the sound. And they're probably right, because games and applications run fine, with no issues when headphones are disconnected from the jack.

I am currently on Windows 7 64-bit Ultimate and my motherboard Gigabyte Z77-D3H operates a VIA HD drivers, which are up to date. Both back panel and front panel operate on the motherboard's sound card.

Additionally, I have a Sound Blaster Audigy SE soundcard, to which my speakers are connected. When I input the headphones into the Audigy SE's seperate back panel from the mobo, I input them into an orange jack, as this seem to work - only however partially. In the game, I can hear sound effects, but I can't hear any system sounds, music, in game music...

I tried changing the settings on Windows 7 default sounds menu, where you can configure Speakers to be Stereo, 5.1 Surround, 7.1 Surround and so on, but none of these seem to do the trick either.

It's driving me insane, and I don't know how to solve it. Maybe any of you will have some kind of an idea on a possible fix.

Cheers.

Answer:Software crashing upon connecting headphones

You might want to look in your BIOS and see if there is some sound setting to disable onboard sound and enable the PCI sound card.

Also, you could try an uninstall reinstall of the BT headset. It should be showing in the Device Manager. Uninstall it in the Device Manager, than restart Windows and it should get reinstalled. May fix it.

I'm trying to connect my arctic p311 wireless bluetooth headphones to my 64 bit windows 7 laptop. I have this bluetooth usb adapter (Amazon.com: 2.0 USB Bluetooth Wireless Adapter for HP, Gateway, eMachine, Dell or ANY Laptop/PC Running Windows 98, 98SE, ME, 200, XP, Vista & WINDOWS 7!!!: Computers & Accessories) which according to one amazon review works with my exact pair of headphones. However when I put the headphones in pairing mode absolutely nothing happens on the windows side of things. Any ideas/suggestions/help would be really appreciated.

Other details:
-the bluetooth usb adapter didn't come with a disc/manual, it was all alone
-the first time I plugged it in windows installed some drivers but nothing that seemed to be related to audio
-this program (MotioninJoy | Playstation 3|Xbox 360|Dualshock 3|Sixaxis|Game|Driver|) which allows for wireless ps3 controller connectivity via bluetooth installed a driver and so I am able to use my controller, wirelessly. So I know the adapter isn't completely broken

Thanks for your time

Joni......I cant see the marking on the sound card but.....I think the Mic plugs into the red (pink) and you can plug your headset speakers into the green jack..thats the one that your desktop speakers plug into. I have two pcs and if I'm using the headset and mic I unplug my desktop speakers ( in the green socket ) and plug in the headset speakers.. ( look on the plugs on your headset ) and you will see a icon of a mic on one and a headset on the other ......If you look really closely at the plugs on your soundcard you should see the same icons as well......( use lots of light and your glasses ) let us know how you make out dl65

I have a Dell Inspiron 12-5378 Signature Edition computer, and I recently bought SkullCandy Crusher headphones. The headphones do not seem to be working and are not even showing up in my playback devices. I'm wondering if there is something that I can do to get them working?
My other question is that the Mic Cable for the SkullCandy headphones is 3.5mm plug which seems to be sticking out a tiny bit when I plug it in. Is it possible that the computer isn't recognizing the device because the plug is too long? I can't seem to find any detailed specs on the headphone jack for this computer. If this is the issue, does anyone have an adapter they recommend?
Is the issue my headphones or the laptop?
Thanks

Hello. Push the plug extra firmly into the jack and see if it can go in the rest of the way.  When it is detected, you should get a popup asking you to select the type of device you are using.
There aren't any detailed specs from Dell about the combo jack, just general information that we pass along on this discussion board. We have been getting reports from owners that the jacks on some late model Dell are tight.

Answer:Satelline Pro A200: When headphones are connected sound comes through headphones + speakers

Maybe your headphone jack is faulty.
Usually the tiny switch which is placed in the headphone socket should disable the speaker?s functionality if the headphone was plugged in.
If this switch doesn?t functions correctly then the sound could comes through the speakers too?

I think this is a ASP case and the notebook technicians should check this?

Good luck

Hi everyone, I recently bought a Lenovo Twist, the 12.5 inch version with Windows 8. It works wonderfully but one problem I have with it is that sometimes (about 75% of the time), I plug in the headphone\, the headphones work fine, but in addition to having sound through the headphones, the laptop continue to blast the sound. The sound is at the same level if I leave in or remove the headphones. What is the problem? On a separate, completely unrelated note, how do I search for a particular app in the Windows 8 store? They only seem to have categories, and no search feature. Thanks in advance for the help!

Answer:Plugged in headphones, the headphones work, but the laptop still blast the sounds

Hey there jgreisman,

I found another thread with an issue similar to your own. Before you head that direction, lets make sure you have updated your BIOS, and Audio Drivers. If you are still encountering the issue post these updates, I believe it would be prudent to contact the service center, 1-800-426-7378, as it may be a hardware issue requiring replacement. When you call in have your Machine Type, Model Number, and Serial Number as they will need it.

To navigate the Windows 8 Store, click the Store tile on the Start screen and then press Windows logo key+ Q, or touch swipe from the right edge to open charms, then use the Search charm to search for apps.

Hope this helps, Thank you jgreisman.

Hello all, I'm having a problem with my turtle beach x12's, and just headphones in general in my computer. i got turtle beach headphones quite a while ago, and i haven't needed to use the mic until now. before i have tried using it, but it has never worked. i dismissed it as a problem with the headphones, but didn't care because i didn't really need to use the mic. no i would like to talk to my friends in-game, but my headphones still don't work. i tried plugging them into the ports on my case and motherboard but to no avail. then, i tried to use some old crappy Logitech headphones to see if it is a problem with my PC, and they didn't work either. the nature of the problem is as follows: i know its not a mic problem, because i can hear myself fine when i flip the little switch. when i plug my headphones in, it doesn't show up in the recording devices, even with show disabled/ unplugged checked. i don't really know how to troubleshoot beyond that so i would appreciate your help. thanks in advance, Theweasels1.

Hello everybody, i heard that it will require soldering new headphones with OEM ones in this thread:

http://bit.ly/moD6Q3

Just to be able to switch tracks and get handsfree option. Otherwise i don't believe good quality earbuds from Sony would be able to provide handsfree and track switching. One guy recommended Sony MDR E829V, but since they are not in-ear earbuds, i found similar ones called Sony MDREX36V which are silicone earbuds and have in-line control.

Now question:

They have in-line remote and if i will solder them with old ones which have song switcher remote, will i have 2 remotes on one cable in the end?

I have 0.1 experience in soldering things.

Hello Guys,

I am having trouble with my wireless connection. It was working fine till a couple of days back and then started acting up. Let me explain the problem in detail.

System connects to the router. It shows full signal. After 10-15 seconds the wireless gets disconnected. After that the behaviour is quite varied. Sometimes the router itself is not recongnized. Sometimes the router is recognized but the system doesnt connect. If I force it to then it again says cannot connect to a hidden network. After a while maybe 4-5 mins later it recongnizes and tries connecting again sometimes it succeeds sometimes it doesnt.

My System Specifications are given below.

1. Samsung Ultrabook Series S - Model NP530U3C-A01UK
2. Processsor - Intel COre 5-3317U CPU @1.70 Ghz
3. Windows 7 Hope Premium - 64 Bit OS
4. Wireless Network Adaptor - Intel Centrino Advaced N-6235
5. ROuter - Thomson
6. 6GB RAM

A Little bit about my Home network
There are 5 devices connected usually. My Wife's PC which is a Dell Inspiron and runs on Windows 7 Home premium, My Ipad, 2 of our Smart Phones and My PC. Every other device currently works fine except mine. So looks like the problem is with my system rather than the router or network provider.

Remedies I have tried and failed
1. Updated the Network Driver by downloading and installing it from Intel Website
2. From the ROuter side manually changed the channel to see if that has an effect
3. FLushed my DNS, tried to release and ren... Read more

Answer:Connecting to Wireless Router keeps connecting and disconnecting

I hate to say it, but since you have done everything I would have done, its possible the wireless adapter is broken/not functioning correctly. Is the product still under warranty? Especially since you stated that other devices connect just fine.
So its probably not the router.
The only other thing I can think of to try would be to buy another wireless router and test it with that.
If you have no problems, something is amiss.
You could also set your router back to factory defaults and try again.

I'm trying to use a router to establish a wireless connection with a machine running XP Home Edition, Service Pack 2. I've connected successfully in the past with other machines (including now, as I write this), so it doesn't seem to be the router or the modem that's the problem. What's more, it's not XP, since there's another machine that can connect fine.

So, I'm stumped. I've contacted both my ISP and the manufacturer of the router, but not much help there.

Any thoughts? The machine sees the wireless connection fine, will attempt to connect and will actually say that it was successful in connection -- but there's no access to the internet and the status is actually limited or no connectivity.

Answer:Solved: wireless/router says it's connecting but not actually connecting

Question: 32 bit on x230?

Has anyone been able to completely install Win 7 32 on the X230? I can get it running, but it's missing about 6 crucial drivers, and I haven't found them on the Lenovo site. For starters, no internet because missing the adapter and related drivers. Thanks in advance for any advice.

Hi guys, First I want to apologize in advance for my bad english but I'm French... And you know that it's not our strengh to be good at foreign languages. So, I'm currently looking to buy some X230 laptop that I will use both for my studies and for the firm I work with (basically only programming work). I decided to take :  I5 - 3230M8Gb RAM PC-12800SSD 128Gb9-Cells battery But my first question is : Is the performance gap between the i5-3230M and the i5-3320m worth the 100? difference ? And then, the most important question : Should I buy my laptop NOW or wait until the next-gen X serie comes out ? Thanks a lot for your answers. Regards,Arnaud

Answer:Looking to buy a X230...

Do you mean configurations and prices on shop.lenovo?I think that difference (I see $55) is because of i5-3320m is a bit closer for corporate market and advanced customers ("geeks"). Look at comparision table and you'll find this CPU supports several specific features.http://ark.intel.com/compare/72056,72164,64896So we see some speculative laptop pricing for this case.As for your 2nd question - the answer of any vendor is: the best way to by laptop (tablet, smartphone etc.) is today and upgrade it (replace) ... tomorrow. Firstly, what do you expect from your laptop? What specific features do you need? For your information look at this page:http://www.thinkscopes.com/thinkpad-x230s-or-x231s-explained-brief-review/

Question: X230 IPS?

I'm looking at purchasing a used X230 laptop from someone and trying to confirm the LCD panel it has.  The description is listed at 2325-DN3 and I can't find any info on that model in any of the reference books.  The Lenovo website shows it with IPS but indicates it's a generic listing. The buyer is a large website so sort of difficult to have them send me the serial #. Any ideas how I can confirm before making the purchase? Thanks!

Question: best ssd for x230

Have a w520 that is a little picky with what SSD i run. they all RUN but some don't give great performance and it's a known problem. Getting my x230 in the mail tomorrow and wondering which ssd should i order that will work perfectly with this machine?

Answer:best ssd for x230

congrats on the new machine! ssd for main bay or msata format? i've got a crucial m4 msata sata3 256gb for boot/swap/apps, with a 500gb hgst 7200rpm/32mb cache platter drive for data in the main bay in my x220. i sacrifice a small bit as the msata ssd only runs at sata2 speed, but i believe the x230 uses sata3 throughout. really quite happy with this hybrid setup. cheers.

Answer:not connecting to the internet not connecting to pages

If the system says you are not connected then you need to check the connections to your modem/router whatever. As you haven't given any information like how do you connect to the internet (wired/wireless, through a router, broadband/dial-up etc. etc.) then it is impossible to give a better answer. So please post back with more information and we may be able to help."I've always been mad, I know I've been mad, like the most of us..." Pink Floyd

Hiya people, first off I'm new to the forum, so hi everyone

Anyway, as it says in the title I want to access the internet on one windows 98 machine via another. I already have them sharing files happily via a cross-over (or patch) cable, but I can't seem to get them to access the net via a lan in the normal way (ie via 'Internet Options'), so does anyone have any idea as to what I'm doing wrong? Is it even possible to share a dial-up connection (yes, I know it's slow, stop s******ing ).

Secondly, digressing from the subject of networking for a moment, the pc that hasn't yet accessed the internet doesn't seem to recognise the '.msi' installation file for apache web server, whereas the other machine does and starts an installation wizard when you run it, will this be remedied by running windows update when I do get it connected?

Many thanks in advance

Answer:Connecting 2 Win98 machines, connecting to net from one via the other

To connect both PCs simultaneously to the internet you need to be able to do "internet connection sharing" on the PC that connects to the internet. Go to the dialup icon (not the shortcut) right click it and then select sharing.

In order to use ICS you must have win98 second edition - it can not be done on win98 1st edition without 3rd party software.

I hope this helps

Still trying to fix my borked BIOS X230 and now I need the BIOS.bak file.  I have extracted the tools for a BIOS update on my desktop since I can no longer access the HDD of the laptop, but where can I get just the BIOS image itself? Thanks! EDIT: Sorry, I should explain what I am trying to do.  I am trying, by powering on while holding FN+B to boot a BIOS file from a flash drive.  I see that this works on other Thinkpads (using a variety of button combinations).  When I hold FN+B while powering on the POST is halted, making me think that this could work... if I had the right files. Thanks again!

Answer:X230 BIOS.bak... how can I get it?

Hi,what for are you planning to use BIOS.bak? To boot laptop from the image itself, w/o 3rd pary tools? To boot into win? It's impossible by several reasons. One of them is incorrect recovery image name.OK, you'll boot into the recovery image on the USB stick using Fn+B keys combination (are you sure in that triick? did you perform that one?). What's the net step?My questions are not being explained by scepsis, but desire of help.

Question: x230 trackpoint

Hey,sometimes when I move my pointer somwhere and then release trackpoint the pointer goes a little bit backwards. Can it be fixed?Regards

Answer:x230 trackpoint

TrackPoint drift has been happening as long as I can remember, at least back to the X31.  Release the trackpoint, and it may drift towards the top left.  If you let it drift, it stops after a few seconds and after that works properly.  At least for me this happens infrequently enough so as not to be a big deal.

I recently purchased a I5 x230 last week, and installed a SSD (intel 520).  I put my computer (sleep) and placed it into my laptop bag when I woke up the laptop was ON (and burning hot) in my laptop bag.  The laptop was shut off due to battery reaching 4%/critical.  I don't know what caused it to awake from sleep or what made it not go to standby due to it being idle. How can I see if I did any damage to the cpu?  I installed a cpu monitoring program and it runs at 48-50 C on idle.

Answer:CPU overheating x230?

CPUs all have a high temp cutoff so it's very unlikely that damage was done.  Usually when the cpu is damaged the symptoms are very noticeable such as failing bootup. Your cpu temps seem about right. You can always download, install, and run the Lenovo bootable cd\usb diagnostics for peace of mind.  They can be downloaded at: http://download.lenovo.com/ibmdl/pub/pc/pccbbs/thinkvantage_en/linux-bootable-cd-16.iso PS:  Never use sleep mode if u plan to pack away the laptop.  Use hibernate or shutdown.

Question: X230 in Brazil

Hello tech people from Lenovo, I am searching an information regarding the X230 laptops sold in Brazil, but I couldn't find anything concrete, Perhaps you guys have access to some info regarding the parts used in each model number. Well, both X230 (23065HP and 23257EP) in brazilian version of Lenovo page just mention "12.5" HD (1366x768) LED" for panel type. I would like to know if those screens are IPS ones or just normal TN panels. Tried to contact Lenovo locally here by Twitter, but they sent me an USA page with the USA models, so no new information. I am really looking forward to by this laptop, but the IPS panel is a must. Thank you in advance!

Question: X230 and Win10

My 230X ran Win 10 successfully from Jan 2016 until October 2016 (Build 10586.633).  Since last fall, Windows Update wastes about 1/2 hr every time the unit is booted to try to update to 1511. At this end of this process, the progress screen goes directly from 99% done (downloading, configuring, installing) to "can't finish ... now undoing the changes."  Sometimes an second reboot is needed to log on; sometimes not.  Same thing happens regardless of whether external monitor and/or mouse and/or keyboard are used and regardless of whether the unit is in its docking station.  Same thing happens whether or not I've deleted files in the "software download" folder or run clean-up utilities.  Using the PC is also interrupted by reminders that there are updates to install. Sometimes Windows Update will wait for the restart time I've selected; sometimes not.  Unit has 4 GB RAM, Norton 360 and a GoFlex back up drive. This model is NOT on the list tested for Win 10 1511 or Win 10 1607.  I don't know why, and a TA call to Lenovo gave no help.  I declined the offer of a paid TA session to solve this by reinstalling Win 8. Has any one had this problem? Is there a kill-switch for the automatic Win 10 updates? Other suggestions?  Tx!

Question: x230 Touchpad

Like many people I have found the touchpad of the x230 nearly impossible to use. The cursor is moving like on a grid and jumping during clicking. Personally I find the former issue more problematic than the latter. The problem seems widespread, so I open this thread to collect my findings about it. Some of it is written from a Linux perspective, but the problem is not Linux-specific.PLEASE, LENOVO, (if you read us), HELP US WITH THIS!!  No one seems to have found a solution yet. Driver updates seem mostly not to help. Let us know as much as possible about the nature and the status of the error, even if you do not intend to do anything about it.0.) Here are, I think, the most relevant links dealing with the problem. This is the longest discussion out there, I think. Shows many people affected, and no success with several driver updates plus some rather disheartening conclusions. Here and here are bug reports on Ubuntu, one following up the other. The first thread contains several tweaks for the xorg.conf, that seem to "make it better but not perfect" for some. For me only the first one works, but at the cost of the cursor becoming super-slow. The latter thread claims there is a fix, but as of last week the problem was still present in the daily build of Ubuntu 14.04.And this is a video showing the problem. There are many other threads (just google "jumpy cursor x230"), but all others I saw did only suggest driver updates. Some claim that solves the problem, others don't.1.) ... Read more

I'm in contact with about handred x230 owners in my country. As far as I know the only one guy said about grid-moving (jumpy) behaviour of touchpad. He has found solution for Linux like you, the link #2. But there is a problem with cursor self moving, I agree, without solution yet.4. any chance the sensitivity settings of your touchpad is too slow?5. is this behaviour observed with both battery and power supply?

I checked on speedtest website and it showed 1 mbps which in comparison to my other laptop's 20 mbps is quite slow.  I have win7 pro 64 bit. 5.97 Acces connection version. Question: X230 MSSD & HDD

I just got my X230 which comes with a 32GB mSSD & 320 SATA HDD. I booted it and finished the first time user setup. When i checked the disk management utility i noticed that the SATA HDD is listed as Drive 0 while the mSSD is drive 1. further more, the system drive is located in the SATA HDD. Shouldn't the system drive be located on the mSSD ? how should i go about making the SSD my boot disk? thanks.

Answer:X230 MSSD & HDD

AFAIK in this configuration msata SSD is for cache purpose of frequently used files only, not for the system. And that caching task is made in shadow mode.In order to make msata SSD as bootable with OS in your laptop you should IMHO reinstall fresh OS, not from Lenovo Factory (Recovery) media.

Two questions: I've been thinking about buying an X230 (or the X1 Carbon), but the more I look the more I think I should take advantage of the ability to upgrade the x230 with both more RAM and a WWAN-fitting SSD by buying the minimum specs available.  The tests I've seen have mostly been with the x230 with the i5 chip and an HDD.  When I compared the i5 and i7 chips (http://cpuboss.com/cpus/Intel-Core-i7-3520M-vs-Intel-Core-i5-3320M) they seemed to be pretty similar.  Is the i5 sufficiently fast with an SSD or would I regret trying to be extra cheap.  Also, is it silly to get a model with an SSD drive already in it, if I'm going to get an mSATA drive anyway? Any advice would be most welcome. Thanks,.

Answer:Thinkpad X230 i5 vs i7, HDD vs. SSD

I have an X230 with the i5 CPU and a 500Gb 7200-rpm hard drive. It is plenty fast to do anything I need including having 2 machines running on top of the Windows 8 host (3 separate machines all running at the same time). Even so, I can run anything else I want. It is certainly fast enough to work with an SSD. I did not do SSD because they are not big enough and are still subject to catastrophic failure (no gentle failure for SSD's).  .... JDH

Question: X230 No Camera

I have a ThinkPad X230 with Windows 8 Pro. The integrated Camera does not work. I reinstalled the Camera Driver (V1.0.0.19) and in Device Manager, Imaging Devices, it says the Camera is working properly. When I go to Metro and run Camera, it turns on the green light on the bezel and shows me a white camera with a white line through it. This is wrong. When I (most thankfully) exit Metro and go to Skype Desktop (V6.5.0.158) and make a Video Call to a known person, the green light on the bezel goes on. I can see them, but they cannot see me. Same white camera with a white line through it. When I go to Skype Video Settings, I am supposed to see myself. I see a white camera with a while line through it. So the Camera does NOT work. Answer:X230 Fan Replacement

Good day and welcome to the community.

I've had good luck ordering maintenance parts directly from:
http://www-304.ibm.com/shop/americas/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/default/PromotionDisplay?promoName=pa...
There is also a toll-free number on that page, if you need assistance.

While I've not replaced an X230 thermal unit, I've done so on an X201T and an X220. The procedure in the hardware manual is accurate. Be aware that the system board must come all the way out as the thermal unit is on the underside. If you're under warranty, you may wish to contact Service first, before digging into your machine.

Finally, yes, the thermal units I purchased directly had thermal grease pre-applied.

Hope this helps a bit.

I have tried with and without battery, two different power supplies. I have tried, multiple times, holding the power button down to "discharge"?  No lights showing, no response to any buttons being pushed.  Within the last week I accepted Lenovo's prompting to update various files, including BIOS.  My recollection it has been re-booted at least once since the Lenovo system updates.  For what it is worth, I have always had the touchpad "turned off" via the software.  Any help, thoughts, or insight would be appreciated.

Answer:X230 non responsive

Make sure that you hold the power button down for a minute without the battery in! Otherwise its a motherboard issue and you might need to buy a new one

I just received and unpacked the X230.  Is there any way to tell for certain if I was shipped the Premium IPS monitor that I ordered or if I was wrongly shipped the standard monitor?

Answer:X230 - Which monitor do I have?

Tilt the display up and down, then side to side.  If it appears to darken significantly when you view from extreme angles, then it's not the IPS display.  If the view stays mostly unchanged, it is the IPS display. Also check device manager.  The monitor should say "wide vewing angle".

Hi all.I have read around a bit and don't personally see any reason neither of these should work, but I've read some reports of people having issues with the Corsair not working and having to return it and the second pair not working. Then the HyperX for some reason mentions all the chips sets around the QM77 which is used in the X230 but not the QM77 itself, which again puts doubt in my mind. Hello, I'd like to buy a 4G or LTE card for my x230. I've trawled through the forums, but frankly, with all this whitelist stuff, I'm not entirely sure what to get. I think it might be the mc7710 (Lenovo FRU 04W3821) but I'd just like to confirm. If it is this, where on earth would I buy one? I've looked on ebay and amazon, but there doesn't seem to be an Lenovo ones - do you sell them on the Lenovo store? Thanks, Mike

Answer:X230 Laptop 4G/LTE in the UK

Hello, MikePearceYou are right, mc7710 - the only choice for x230 if you'e planning to use, mainly, LTE networks not in the North America. And its FRU is 04W3821, indeed.Purchase modem1. online (in the Lenovo/IBM store) or by phonehttps://support.lenovo.com/ru/en/documents/ht1007502. in the 3rd pary stores (amazon, ebay, ali...), they might offer mc7710 with different p/ns and buy codes (SKU). Such modems might have incompatible (not x230 whitested) modem hardware IDs. You can get that modem, but will need to perform some efforts to change those IDs. It's a safe operation but needs some laptop configuration and user skills.Note, there are several topics in the forum with mc7710 and x230 related discussions (as well another IvyBridge generation ThinkPad laptops). Most of them are with my modest participation. So, you can find a lot of additional information.

I am trying to do a clean install on my good, old Thinkpad X230 which came with 64-bit Windows 7 Professional. For some reason, I was not able to create a bootable media from the recovery partition. In any case, I wanted to avoid the recovery partition as I want a basic, non-bloated, and minimal install. Hence, I downloaded a copy of 64-bit Windows 7 Professional from Microsoft/ digital river website. After performing the checksum, I used Microsoft's USB DVD Download Tool to make a bootable USB on Kingston Flash Voyager (USB 2.0; 8 GB; FAT32). BTW, just for the heck of it, I verified  that it boots on my spare (and even older) Thinkpad X60 -- though it doesn't proceed when it sees that the X60 has a 32-bit microprocessor. The relevant BIOS values and settings are as follows: UEFI BIOS Version G2ET95WW (2.55)

Answer:X230 -- Can't boot from USB

Hello and welcome,

Since you used the MS tool, I'll assume you want to boot the flash drive and install in legacy mode.  Try turning off UEFI boot in BIOS if you haven't already.  Probably should set BIOS to defaults first.

If you actually want to to a EUFI install you'll need to prepare the flash drive differently.

Power button does not do any thing. I searched online and I found that I can do the trick to remove statick charges by 10 times pushing power bottom and one more for 30 seconnds, but it did not work. Unfortunately it is not under waranty. I appreciate your help.

Answer:x230 dead

Hi Mim1234,

Welcome to Lenovo Community!

I am sorry to hear that you are facing the issue with no power on your ThinkPad X230.

Remove the AC adapter, system battery and CMOS (coin) battery (under the palm rest) for about 30 seconds.
Reattach the CMOS battery, palm rest, AC adapter and system battery.
Power your ThinkPad system ON.
If it powers on successfully, then update the BIOS and Embedded Controller code.
If it did not power on successfully, then have the ThinkPad system board (planar) replaced.

Please let us know the findings after performing the above troubleshooting steps.

Hope to hear back soon!

Best regards

Question: X230 notebook lid

Hello there!First of all, the X230 is a great product. I think whoever here owns it too, understands what I am talking about Something that is not so cool, is the plastic lid of the notebook, where I found a small space, but let's describe it better (or try to^^):http://s14.postimg.org/txood9f35/laptop_lid.pngSorry for the bad quality, but it should show, what I am trying to explain. between the LCD display and the lid is a space, where you are able to look through. Normally, I would say, that is not a huge problem, or as the Lenovo support called it a few days ago "we not gonna repair it, due to it is a cosmetic problem". But I am really afraid of dust and other small pieces get in there and slowly destroy something inside...The support employee had a fallback plan: Send me a technician and let me pay for everything, if the technician also thinks, that it's just a "cosmetic problem".So guys, do you think, that the space is a problem, or that I am overreacting? Should I take the risk and let the technician come?(Just for the record: The notebook was bought in October 2012 and has 4 years of on-side-repair).Thanks for your assistance. -betatester

Answer:X230 notebook lid

Is that your display bezel plastic? My one doesn't do that. Yes you should get it looked into by warranty, dusts will be a problem in the lon run.

I recently ordered an ThinkPad x230 (loaded w/ Windows 8) and I a have few questions/things I am not sure about. I plan to put a 2.5in or msata SSD drive in it and and use it as the boot drive. My eventual goal is to have a 2.5in (240GB+) and mSata (240GB+) combo, but not until I run out of space with either one first. After some research, I am leaning on getting a 2.5in SSD first instead of a msata, because of the SATA III performance increase. So here are my questions:1. I assume that my order will not come with an installation DVD with windows/drivers since the x230 doesn't have a DVD drive, so how would I exactly be able to install W8 in an SSD drive?2. Does the x230 come with a sticker containing the W8 activation key or is the key embeded in the motherboard? I want to since I am want to do a fresh install of Windows 8 on an SSD instead of just cloning the 500GB HDD that comes with the x230.3. How much battery life will I save if I just go with a 2.5in SSD in the main HDD bay vs. a mSata + 500GB 7200rpm mech drive?4. Two part question for the people that have had experience with both setups in my third question. How big was the performace difference between the two when it comes to everyday usage? I am not taking about just the boot time, but the overall speed of programs during everyday usage. Secondly, was the performance boost and extra battery life by just using a 2.5in drive worth it vs. the decrease overall space provide by a msata and mech drive combo. As mentioned... Read more

Answer:x230 SSD and OS questions

1. Get an iso installation image from the web and put it on a stick. 2. Key is embedded in the bios and win8 will get it from there. 3. Don't know. Some I guess. 4. I'm just using a 2.5 samsung ssd drive. Extreme fast working over a normal hard drive. I don't want normal HDs anymore. If you do not need that much space, stay with only a ssd. Very fast and no noise at all.

My new X230 is ready to ship! In anticipation of receiving it, I welcome advice on steps to take to get it set up correctly from the start. Downloads, driver updates, software to install/uninstall, other steps? Any suggestions appreciated! Thanks!

Answer:Setting up a new X230

I had an X230. I found that the Lenovo software that shipped with mine (April, 2013) was highly error prone. So the very first thing you should do after starting the machine is to go to Lenovo Software Update (it is in Control Panel) and update ALL the Lenovo software. This may take a couple of runs and restarts, but the newest Lenovo software is much more reliable than the original. I also set Lenovo Hotspot not to look for anything so as to prevent errors. After all the above, do the Windows Updates (lots of them right up to yesterday (July Patch Tuesday). Then install your software. Make sure you upgrade any of your applications to the newest level before you install them on Windows 8. I hope that helps a bit.  ... JDH

there is a .5 amp fuse on the motherboard that controls all the fuses except the one for Bluetooth. It sounds like it is blown. It cannot be replaced without very good soldering equipment. I believe a good preheater and a temperature-controlled rework station is the minimum configuration.

I am anxiously awaiting my x230 to arrive today. I have a crucial 256gb SSD to install (if you want one get from Microcenter, $189). I read somewhere that there was an issue with installing this on an x220, and I have been trying to see if anyone had any issues with installing and running on the x230. I know I first have to clone the hard drive that is pre-installed, and then install the new one, but I am wondering if anyone has had any issues with either the physical installation, or running the cloned image of the OEP drive on the SSD? Specifically: 1. was there a problem fitting a Crucial SSD? One person said for the x220 they had to cut screws on the SSD bracket or something. 2. are there any registry changes that need to be made for the ssd? That same person said something about having to disable some of the protections for the original hard disk, and make some changes in the registry entries. Perhaps a Lenovo specialist could please reply to this at least to say whether there are any specific changes to the registry or Thinkvantage, or any component of the x230 that need to be made when upgrading the hard drive to an SSD. Thank You

Answer:How to install SSD on x230

Hello,

Microsoft Windows Vista and Windows 7 behave slightly differently when installed onto a SSD (or a newer model hard disk drive with 4KiB sectors instead of legacy 512-byte sectors) and as a result, I would suggest doing a clean OS install.  Some of this is covered in the following Microsoft MSDN blog entry:

Engineering Windows 7 Support and Q&A for Solid-State Drives

The actions for an SSD install largely consist of disabling certain disk and file I/O services that offer no real benefit for SSDs (they are meant to improve performance with conventional rotating media HDDs and can, in fact, degrade SSD performance over time if enabled) and while you can disable these manually, I would be cautious about having missed something, or improperly disabling a service, hence the recommendation for a clean OS install using the recovery media created from the original factory HDD?the Windows 7 installation routine on it will automatically detect the SSD and configure the OS appropriately for it during setup.

The Hardware Maintenance Manual for the X230 can be found here on Lenovo's site, which explains how to replace the hard disk drive inside an X230.  I believe that the X230 is like my X220, in that it uses a 7mm high "slim" drive as opposed to the more common 9.5mm drives used in laptop computers.  This means that you will need to make sure that the Crucial 256GB SSD is 7mm high, or disassemble it from its outer protec... Question: X230 new LCD cable

Hi, I had a broken LCD problem (https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-X-Series-Laptops/x230-LCD-with-vertical-black-lines-fixed-by-t...).So I ordered a new screen but the connector is different: the new screen has a 30 pin connector while the old cable (n. 04W1679 from https://support.lenovo.com/it/en/partslookup) is bigger, now I don't know how to find a proper cable. The screen model is M125NWN1 R0.Which cable should I buy? I don't understand how to choose the right one.

Answer:X230 new LCD cable

Unfortunately, not a cable or connector are the key problem. Your new LCD has another signaling interface eDP, while x230 supports older one LVDS. They aren't compatible even if you'll find the cable with 30 pins connector. There is a way to use eDP LCD if you'll add additional, 3rd party, interface coverter kit, but it's a complicated enough action, needs skills. So, replace new LCD to LGD LP125WH2-SLB3, x230 compatible IPS panel.

Hello,Two weeks ago I bought a new X230 from Germany's Lenovo online shop. It arrived on Thursday, and my initial experience is, to put it mildly, frustrating. While customizing the system I chose the 3-year onsite next-business-day + accidental damage protection warranty - the most comprehensive one offered. I received an e-mail that I had to register my warranty, but the link to do so was incorrect and redirected to the main Lenovo page for the US. Thanks to this forum, I found the correct link (on ibm.com!) and registered my warranty on Friday. I received a confirmation e-mail that the warranty was now registered to that system. Today (Saturday), I tried the "Warranty Status Lookup" thing here: http://support.lenovo.com/de_DE/product-service/warranty-status/default.page After I input my serial number and machine type and click Submit, the form just reloads empty. Ugh.The laptop had several defects on arrival:1) On Thursday I immediately noticed that the hard drive was damaged - it wouldn't even pass the simple diagnostic test in the laptop's BIOS. I booted an Ubuntu LiveCD and it immediately complained about SMART errors. So the hard disk is DOA.2) An hour later the system hung pretty badly. I ran memtest and around the 40% mark, it started counting millions of errors. So the RAM is DOA too.At this point I am confused as to what I need to do. On the Lenovo website, the "Support phone list" directs me to 0800-5004618 (8-18 Monday Friday). But it warned me that my device has ... Read more

Question: X230 fan error

My X230 displays "Fan Error" at bootup and then shuts down, I have tested the fan on an external 5V DC power supply and it indeed works so the fan itself doesn't seem to be at fault. Furthermore the startup procedure usually includes spinning the fan up to full speed immediately after the power button is pressed and this no longer happens, suggesting a motherboard fault.I took the laptop apart for internal cleaning a month ago and it appears that the fan wire got pinched between the chassis and the dock connector on reassembly, and indeed the insulator on the individual wires is broken. I therefore fear that a short circuit occured between one of these wires and the dock connector which being metallic is presumably at 0V potential. What would you advise for further action? I have read that the fan is usually protected by a motherboard mounted fuse...The laptop is still under a three year warranty for a few months but I fear that Lenovo will charge me for repairing this? Many thanks in advance Nicholas

Solved!

Go to Solution.

Answer:X230 fan error

If it is under warranty, they shouldn't charge. "Fan error" doesn't mean "doesn't spin" or "too hot", it usually means "too slow". The fan spins for 1/2 second at startup and if the speed isn't high enough, it usually means the lubrication has dried up or worn out.

Could someone "in-the-know" please detail if its physically possible to purchase an FHD or HD+ resolution screen and attach it to an x230? If so, what components would I need to purchase/replace?

Answer:FHD/HD+ screen on x230?

Presuming you could find an appropriate screen - which I don't believe is there in the first place - you'd need to build a converter, mod the BIOS and re-flash the EDID on the new panel...and that's a lot of work even if one knows what they're doing...
