x220 screen automatically reorients when I carry laptop around

Question: x220 screen automatically reorients when I carry laptop around

Hi, I pressed some strange keys on my keyboard (something like a shift+alt+function) the other day when I was in Excel and I unintentionally turned on some feature that causes my Thinkpad X220's display to automatically reorient when I physically change the orientation of my screen. For example, if I flip my laptop sideways, the screen orientation changes as well. As cool as this is, it's driving me crazy. Any idea how to turn this feature off? Thank you!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

My laptop screen has developed a vertical grey band about 10cm wide which starts very light but as I leave the laptop switched on gets increasingly dark and when dark I can see effectively a shadow of a previous image on the screen, making it very difficult to read. I'm concerned that it may not simply be a screen replacement issue as there seems some comment that it may be a connector cable issue.  Any ideas?

Would you say a laptop bag is needed? I carry mine to school but Im so scared about it, that Im so worried for my baby.

I was at school today getting off the bus and my bag which I had my baby in, swung as I had the bag around my shoulder and the bags ends hit the metal doors of the bus. It was terribly shattering but like I said, I baby my comp to death and worried. Do you think my comp is ok? It would have loose parts inside will it?

I want to preface this message so that others may understand how horrible an experience it is to claim anything on the manufacture warranty with Lenovo.  Previous to my company using Lenovo we used Dell. Their support was always top notch. They came on site to replace broken or defective parts and all with in 1-2 day period. The Lenovo warranty experince will start by you being suffeld around to 3-4 different Indian speaking help desk locations, and after explaining your issues 4-5 times they will inform you that you must ship the laptop in for replacement services. This will require you to be with out your laptop for 7-10 business days. That in my book is  unacceptable to any standards. IBM Thinkpads used to be known for how well they supported the business user, now we are told that you have no other options but to ship the laptop and wait more than a week for the matter to be resolved.  This is the last straw from a frustrated IT manager, and we will be taking our business to a vendor that values customer support and stands behind thier products better.

Answer:Frustrating Warranty Experience X220 Laptop 4 Months old broken LCD Screen

While I can sympahise - when you purchased your lenovo products if you did not purchase the on-site service what exactly do you expect ? Like anything else, no-one can return a product for service without following procedures and such returns, repairs etc all take time. So - whats the issue - you are getting exactly what you paid for .......

Ever since I recently upgraded my x220 to Windows 10 a mysterious on screen icon has appeared in the lower centre of the screen. I've tried disabling on screen display but it still comes back.   Can anyone help me get rid of it? Thanks Dev

Answer:Mysterious on screen icon in lower centre of X220 Windows 10 laptop

It is On-Screen display icon indicating that ThinkLight is turned off. No wonder since X220 is not Windows 10 compatible.

Hey all!

I have recently ordered a new Sony Vaio CW laptop, it is a 14 inch screen. My problem is that out of the 100s of cases online for laptops, none of them seem to be suitable for a 14 inch laptop!

I recently ordered a Belkin Energy Collection Messenger backpack as on their website it stated it holds 14-15 inch laptops. Though when I bought it on amazon it stated it only caters 15.4 inches... so im hoping for the best right now.

Can anyone here reccomend me a laptop bag/case/whatever for my 14 inch laptop? or perhaps a place where I can look?

I'm also on a little bit of a tight budget as the laptop and 7 years extra cover has cost me £730. Im not interested in buying the vaio's offical bag for £65 or any other insanely priced bag

Thanks for the help.

Answer:Finding a suitable laptop carry case

A 15" +/- carrying case will hold your 14" notebook just fine. I used to carry around my 14" D600 in one of such cases for years and it served me pretty well

[The original one was nicked :/]

So I will recommend to keep what you have already bought; and save the money.

This is probably a silly question but I have just got a new laptop. While playing games on it, I was frustrated by the black borders of the screen on both sides. I was able to make the computer automatically adjust the resolution to the game that I'm playing so that the black space was filled. But today it has stopped doing that.

I've forgotten how to put it back and I've looked for how to turn this option on again but I can't figure it out.

Can anyone tell me how?

Answer:How to make laptop automatically adjust screen resolution?

I do believe what you have to do is go into the game settings and set the resolution to match what your screen supports.

This just started this morning.  I noticed that if I left a browser window open for a while (particularly with a white background with black text), when I minimize the window, I can see a faint image of it left behind that fairly quickly (at least for now) fades away on it's own.

I turned off the machine, unplugged all the batteries and the power.  Checked and cleaned all the connections and vents.  Then powered it back up on just main battery (has nearly a full charge) played with brightness just a bit.  At first it wasn't repeating the problem but quickly it's showing up again and I am extremely concerned.

I am still under warranty.  Please advise.  Thank you in advance - best regards.

Moderator comment: Subject edited to clarify laptop model.

Answer:Lenovo X220 Tablet (screen just startedshowing signs of screen memory burn in...)

Updated Info:  Problem only happens on the edges of the screen, a little less than an inch in from any edge, top/bottom/left/right and the problem may appear, but anything in the middle and it seems fine.

Doesn't happen if my background is set to solid black.  It's slightly noticeable with a mid-grey tone and it's worse still with a mid to dark grey tone that is tinted with a purple-ish hue.

Could some other x220 owners set their bg color to a dark grey purple color, and try to see if it's just a limitation.  I'm trying to determine if my hardware is failing, or if I just stumbled upon something that for most cases and purposes isn't going to be much of a bother.

Other than recently calibrating my touch and pen input, I haven't made any changes to the system.  Today I installed a new intel graphics driver update from Win update but it didn't change anything.

Thank you all very much.

I have a client that says the little circles that come up every time he touches the screen is giving him a headache.  Does anyone know how to shutoff the response of the pen each time it touches the screen,  but still have the pen work? Thanks.

Answer:X220 Pen touch on screen: How to disable the circles that show when the pen has touched the screen

You need to disable the cricles that appaers after touching the screen, there is no such option, I would suggest you to please perform the workarounds.

1.To remove fingerprints, etc., from the touch panel display, use a dry, soft, lint-free cloth or a piece of absorbent cotton. Do not apply solvents to the cloth.2. Gently wipe foreign particles and dust from the touch panel with one side of the cloth.3. Wipe smudges or fingerprints with the other side of the cloth, or with a clean cloth.4. After using the cloth, wash it with a neutral detergent.

After this, please check if the issue resolved.

Sameer

I was browsing the Internet, and left for a minute, and when I came back the screen was black with a flashing white dash in the top left corner. I've turned it off, taken the battery out, and tried restarting it many times. It will go to the openIng "thinkpad" screen, then back to the black screen with flashin underbar. Please help!

The Thinkpad Tablet and the X220t are two different devices. Regarding your problem, I fear that the boot sector is defective. You'll probably have to reinstall Windows.

Nothing appears on the screen when booting the computer from a powered off state. Not even the Thinkpad spash screen appears on the display when I press power. The backlight appears to come on but the display is still mostly black. So the LCD cables are at least partially connected. I doubt it was related since it was a driver, but the last thing I did in Windows was update the Wacom drivers since the pen was not tracking correctly in slate mode. This is what I triedPressed Fn+Home a few times then Fn+End a few times. The backlight increased in brightness but the display was still mostly black. Pull the AC power and the battery. Press the power button a couple times to discharge lingering charges in the capacitors. Installed the AC power only, then pressed power. Still nothing. Powered up the system then pressed the blue ThinkVantage button immediately. A single beep was heard but nothing on screen. Plugged system into a monitor with a VGA (D-Sub) connector and set the monitor to VGA input. Nothing appeared on the screen. Pressed Fn+F7 a couple times on the tablet to see if it was set to a different output for some reason. Repeated with another monitor with displayport. Again nothing on the tablet display. Pulled the RAM, booted with no RAM. No beeps. Reseated RAM and powered up, nothing on screen. I don't have any 1333 MHz DDR3 laying around. I also traded RAM with a known good system in my inventory at work. Is there a key sequence to rese... Read more

Answer:X220 blank screen at boot, not even POST spash screen

You should've gotten beep codes when you booted without ram.  That's not a good sign.,

There isn't any key code that I know of to reset the bios without actually being in the bios.

The old procedure for ThinkPads was to take out everything that is in a slot, hard drive, RAM, wireless card and modem, battery and unplug the ac adapter and hold the power button down for 30 seconds and then put just the ac adapter back in and push the power button and see what happens.  If you get beep codes, put 1 stick of ram in and hit the power button again.  If nothing, take out that ram stick and put another one in and try it again.  Try it in different slots.  See if the bios splash screen comes up.  If it comes up, start putting components back in one at a time and rebooting each time until it doesn't.  Save the hard drive for last.

Are any of your indicators lit and does the fan come on when you hit the power button?

It sounds like you already tried most of that, but that's the only thing left to try that I can think of.

Answer:Best Screen for X220?

It's a direct swap, just trash the old TN panel and put one of the following ones:

- LP125WH2-SLB1- LP125WH2-SLB3 - LP125WH2-SLT2

I'd recommend the SLT2 and SLB3, the SLB1 had a common case of ghosting/retention issues.

Unfortunately I have no eBay links, just make sure that the sellers offer an exact model of any of the shown above and not a "compatible" one.

UL1642 is a compliance standard for individual LiON battery cells, not for battery packs made up of multiple cells.

Can you please indicate which regulation, from which jurisdiction, you found this mandaory requirenment in?

BTW, as far as I am aware, most Levnovo ThinkPad battery packs are compliant with the UL standard for battery "packs" - UL 2054 and/or UL 60950

I've started to notice that my x220 shuts or closes its screen when I'm idling or afk from my laptop for less than a minute (forcing me to enter my credentials everytime to get back in). This occurs everytime and within that time period of one minute. I thought well maybe I have to change my power settings so I went to the control panel to see my settings. After I made sure everything was set to a time longer than one minute, I checked to see if my screen would close and it still did; does anyone know what I need to change to make this stop happening?

The ips screen on my x220 has no backlight. While the windows system can detect the IPS screen and the vga output is ok.  And I am pretty sure the screen and the cable is not damaged. It probably be something wrong with the motherboard. Does anyone knows which pin on the connector is for backlight? So that I can trace the wire and hopefully find out which components on the motherboard is damaged.Thanks.

maktube wrote:And I am pretty sure the screen and the cable is not damaged. It probably be something wrong with the motherboard. How did you come to that conclusion? When there is no backlight, it is usually the the cable, inverter, or backlight itself that failed, not the motherboard. This page has a diagram with the backlight cable: http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/product-and-parts/detail.page?&LegacyDocID=MIGR-77193 (item # 4). My x220 took a fall and managed to crack the screen. It was origionally the "LP125WH2(SL)(B3)", which I believe is the later of the two IPS pannels and is generally seen as the best screen for the x220 model. Infuriatingly, the insurance will only pay out of I get it repaired at a "proper" computer shop so I'm unable to just fix it myself. The computer shop has found what they claim to be the correct screen, but I'm not even 100% sure it's actually an IPS model, nevermind a "decent" one (the vertical viewing angles seem awful but as I can't compare it to the origional screen it's really hard to tell). These are the details from their replacement screen; Can someone please help me identify what sort it is and if it's as good as the IPS it's replacing as I'm not having much luck with google? Greatest of thanks

Answer:x220 screen replacement

Actually the one bit of information I've been able to find out is that the screen has a GLOSS finish where as the origional part is MATT. This is enough on it's own that I actively don't want this as a replacement screen

So I just got my new X220 laptop and I started watching some tv shows on it and noticed the video quality is way, way worse than my old (non-lenovo) laptop. I didn't get the IPS upgrade when I bought it because I don't need an awesome screen, just a normal one - like my 6 year old laptop has, and like every laptop at any computer store has. But this screen seems to not be able to display as many colours as other laptop screens, so another screen with worse resolution ends up showing more detail because the X220 screen just blotches all the different shades of colours together. It ends up making HD movies look like the junk on youtube. Are there settings I can change that would improve this? Can I upgrade to IPS post-purchase? Can I return this thing? Like I said, I don't need an awesome screen, just a normal one - but this thing is so ridiculously bad it's making me wish I'd gotten something else.

Answer:X220 "HD" (not IPS) screen doesn't look very HD

Did you try updating to the latest Intel drivers? Does it do the same thing hooked into an external monitor?

Hi, the screen is behaving as if the computer thinks it has a larger resolution than it actually does. ie. the the text does not begin right up against the left hand side of the screen, and runs off the right hand side. NOTE this happens in the BIOS and POST screen, as well as in Windows. Even when the Windows "startup menu" appears, ei when you press F8, there is clearly a black column the runs down the left hand side of the screen. The column is about 1cm wide.In Windows, I am unable to get the desktop to fill the screen unless it extends off the side and below the bottom of the actual screen. If I set the resolution to the minimum, then I get the entrie desktop, but it is not centred on the screen, even if the centre option is chosen inthe driver config. any tip?

Hello Richardw38,

It seems to be issue with the display driver, you should uninstall the display driver and then get the updated driver from the website and install.

Hello all, I just got a problem in the LCD screen. My X220 boots up normally, but in the half way, LCD turned off, and no display on the LCD screen. However, after 1 minutes or so, I plugged in VGA monitor, then system is found to be waiting for entering password. So, the screen swithed to VGA during system boot. After entering password, system works normally with external VGA monitor. I tried to transfer video to LCD using Fn+F7, but LCD does not turn on. I ran diagnostics, but found nothing. I checked and updated LENOVO and Microsoft software updates to the latest ones, but nothing changed.I wish this problem is caused by software rather than hardware (Since LCD turns On when power is applied, and with external VGA, everything is wowrking...).Is there anyone who had the same symptom and resolved this?By the way, my OS is Windows 7. Thank you for your insights. YoshiX220

Answer:X220 LCD Screen Problem

HiI'd advice to reflash BIOS. One of the reason is this process will reset (clear) BIOS settings to default, hidden ones including. Several such settings relate integrated graphics adapter and boot screen type.

I've had the laptop for about a year, and over the course of that time bright spots have developed. You can see them cleary on the screen and they look brighter than the background no matter what color the background is. There is also a group of small green pixels in an L shape. Its  a fairly big group and you can only see it in a dark background. It just looks like an annoying group of green pixels. Would this be covered by the warranty? I also have signifigant ghosting of the desktop and browser but it doesn't annoy me as much as the spots and green pixels.

Hi,I have a problem on my X220 where the screen blanks out. Here's how it happens.First, the system hangs, noticably (like freezes for about half a second)Then the screen goes completely blackAnd then comes back on None of my programs are closed or reset (Chrome, Gtalk etc.) and only thing that seems to be different is that the Lenovo Power Manager/Wireless Manager Icons seem to have reset. Anybody know what could be causing this? (if it matters, I have my pagefile disabled, but have 8GB of ram installed.  I closely monitor my ram usage and it has never been above 4.2 GB)

Answer:X220 Screen Blanking out

I had a problem where my computer would noticeably hang for a second and then come back as though nothing happened. I was able to resolve this by properly reseating the RAM. If this does not fix the issue, have a look at the event viewer immediately after it happens again. Try to look for errors or critical items under the Windows system log.

Bought my X230 in August 2013 (so I'm still under warranty), used it mainly for school. It's been about a month since school's been finished and my X230 has jsut been on my table at home. Lately it's been displaying a black box with flickering lights on one part of the screen. It appears and reappears when I tilt my screen and it's been getting worse throughout the last few days. Anyone know what the problem is? Is it the LCD cable? I contacted a local Lenovo service warranty provider on email but they haven't replied yet.

Answer:x220 IPS screen flickering

Cable connection and cable is the easiest to check. There is high probability your LCD controller board that is at fault. May require a new LCD.

My x220 got wet this week. I dried it out for 5 days and just booted it up for the first time now. It's working fine but the screen has a few bright spots from the water. I imagine there is no way to fix this without replacing the screen. Should I just go to my local authorized Lenovo service center? How much should I expect this to cost me. Thanks for your help.

Answer:getting a replacement screen for an X220

I suggest using it for a while before you fix anything. The screen will be expensive and it is possible that the motherboard will also fail soon from corrosion caused by the spill. If the screen and the motherboard are both bad, you might be better off selling yours for whatever you can get and buying another one

Hi,I've got a problem with my X220 LCD screen. The screen is very dark (almost can't see anything). In the past I 'd similar problem with T410s and it's the fuse on the motherboard. That LCD has inverter, but I checked the one on another laptop and it looks OK. The same is with the screen - when I put it into another X220, it works. So it looks, that there's something with the motherboard. Ca anybody tell me if there's any LCD fuse on the motherboard?  Where can I find the one?

Answer:X220 dark LCD screen

Hi,there is a lot of fuses with screen circuites connected (CN4 - screen itself, CN3 - parts in the lid). The first group of fuses is placed on the CPU side of the PCB (or backside of the laptop), right near of the docking connector (CN4 connector is placed on another side). The number of fuses are: F1 (20V circuit), F2 (3V), F6 (3V). Nominals of the fuses are listed near of the DM1 (RAM socket)

I am about to purchase an X220 and would be grateful for some advice from current users of the laptop, My primary use of the laptop will be in the office running office and software development applications, I really like the look of the ips panel but is it the best choice for working ? For using the screen for all day working would I be better with the TN or IPS panel, thinking of glare and ease on the eyes etc. Thanks!

Answer:X220 screen selection

IPS is the best if you are using it all day, since it has better viewing angle and better colour.

Answer:X220 IPS screen goes dim randomly

Does the on-screen display show the brightness numbers? If it does, then I find it confusing, and there might be some software bug going on. If not, wouldn't it just be the Power Manager software dimming the screen after some idle time?

I have a great signal from my asus rt-ac68, however, my x220 doesn't support N. Any suggestions for wireless usb adapters? I would just bridge another router but I really don't see a point when my signal is already great.

...so I'm going to assume that you mean 11ac (well, in my experience the Intel Centrino adapters are pretty bad if signal is slightly weak but they still do 11n). The only decent (at least for now) adapter that fits (you have the small form factor only) is the rather old Intel 7260 11ac card. Some swear by Intel's wireless cards but I'm not really that impressed in general. If you want a solid 11n go for Atheros AR9382, works great and did perform at lot better than the Intel Centrino card I had earlier in my laptop.

miniPCIe cards works a lot better than USB adapters in general unless you're getting some industrial grade stuff ;-)

I recently bought an x220 laptop that I was told had a hard drive crash. Now that I'm trying to get it running with a new drive, I'm discovering far greater problems that may mean a bad motherboard, and I'd like to get opinions on them. I had problems fitting the 7mm SSD drive into the bay, and when it was in the machine would not boot. Taking the rubber guides off the drive to make its assembly thinner solved that. I then was up in Win XP, doing fine, when after a while the machine just died, as if shot.  Even before that I was getting strange behavior. The machine would boot when the power cord was attached (a BIOS setting fixed that), but also if it was simply moved, such as being set on its edged or turned upside-down. It seemed to be getting worse. I discovered that it behaved just a bit better with the SSD drive out, so I took it out and used the opportunity to flash the BIOS to the latest version, 1.34. But the machine still has a mind of its own. It either boots by itself out of nowhere, even when unattended (LAN boot is turned off, btw), or it boots up and then suddenly dies, or it doesn't complete the boot process at all. I don't believe heat has anything to do with the shutdowns, and certainly not with the self-starting. I've never seen a machine do this, and am at a loss. A bad BIOS chip doesn't seem to cover all that's going on here. Maybe it's a bad power connection somewhere? I'd like to get this working. I got it dirt ch... Read more

Answer:x220 laptop boots, shuts down by itself

If you have a bad hhd and have removed the ssd, how are you booting? Pop off the keyboard and palmrest and see if something is visibly loose. Put it back together, go into BIOS and reset to factory specs. Install a version of Win7 to the ssd. If you don't have access to Win7, then go to Microsoft and download a demo version of Win8. Install that on the ssd. Are your problems fixed?

Hi I am replacing my laptop and mobile phone, and would like to be able to make/receive calls/texts on a laptop with my mobile phone SIM card installed. Is this possible with the X220? If so, how do I do it? Do I need extra equipment/software? I understand it would have to be kept on a lot, and that I would need a suitable SIM from a mobile phone network. A lot of the online answers to this question seem to contradict each other. Many thanks for your help.

Answer:X220 SIM to use laptop as mobile phone

I used my phone's SIM card in my computer to test HSPA for an hour.  My intention was only to test it because I was evaluating different broadband technologies.  Nevertheless, AT&T sent me an email the next day warning me that my service plan didn't allow my SIM card to be used in a broadband card and that my data plan would be shut off if I continued to use the SIM card in the laptop.  Thankfully by that point I had already finished my tests. Another alternative you might consider is to tether your phone.  Android can do it.  Windows Phone 7 (my phone) doesn't officially support it, but several models have the feature built in by the manufacturers.  I don't know about iPhone.  Before I got WWAN on my computer, I frequently tethered without being hassled by AT&T.

I have an AzureWave AW-VD920 HD Video Decoder mini PCIe card. It has a Broadcom BCM70015 chip on it. http://www.broadcom.com/products/Consumer-Electronics/Netbook-and-Nettop-Solutions/BCM70015 I cannot get it to work in my X220 laptop. There's an available mini PCIe slot but Windows 7 x64 doesn't detect it. For some reason, the card works in my other ThinkPad laptop, which is an X201 but not in X220. I inserted the card in the Wi-Fi slot but the BIOS halted with an "Unauthorized network card..." message. I know the available mini PCIe slot works because I successfully installed an SSD in the same slot. I also know the Broadcom card works since my X201 recognized it. Not that it matters, but the BIOS on the X220 is current (version 1.39). I welcome any feedback. Thank you in advance.

Answer:Broadcom Crystal HD on X220 Laptop

Definitely this card utilizes pci-e bus lines so it can't work witin wwan mini pci-e/msata slot.wlan slot has usb and mini pci-e bus lines. In your case the cause of issue is white list of approved wireless cards stored within the BIOS. That's the cause of error message you're facing with. So I hope you know the solution regarding the BIOS.

Hi! I had my Lenovo x220 for exactly a month and now it has some problems. It was working perfectly fine for ten minutes, and then I left for an hour and came back and pressed the power button because the laptop had gone to sleep... the laptop seemed to start up, but no response and the screen was blank. I trying to re-start the laptop for several times but it seems no use. All the lights flicker on for a second when I start it up, the power button is light and it seems the fan also operates well, but the screen just keep blank. This is very aggravating especially as I have only been using the laptop for a month. I have several people calling me today asking why their screen dims at 6pm every day on the dot. Is this some new feature in the X220 and can someone please tell me how to turn it off. If I had one myself I think I could figure it out.

Answer:Does the x220 have option to dim screen at a set time?

Power Manager Click on Advanced (upper right) Power Agenda tab That's where such things would be located. You can set a number of timed events in there, including changing the brightness. If they all work for the same company, it's possible their IT department has a scheduled event in there, in case people left their laptop on after hours and it's using unnecessary power, but I doubt it would come from Lenovo preset to do so. I hope that helps.

Hello, It's my first post, so welcome . I've been a lenovo thinkpad user for a month - X220 with SSD, W7 Professional, umts module and extended battery (if more information is needed I can send the full description) - and a strange bug occurs to my new laptop sometimes. After pressing the power button most of controls (camera, speaker mute, microphone mute) always make a flash. Next, most of the times (80-90%) the thinkpad logo shows up and the Windows 7 boots - that's ok. Unfortunately, about one in ten trials end in getting a black screen just after the flashes of the controls. The screen is enabled - it is just black. I must disable laptop (I don't have to keep the power button long - simple pressing is enough), and then, the second trial always succeed. It only occurs during the fresh, full boot - I didn't notice it after restarts, back from sleep or hibernation. I use docking stations, but it occurs in both ways - with or without docking station. It's not a huge problem to ignore that issue, but I'm worried that it may result in a more serious problem in the future. Any ideas and help will be appreciated. --Best regards,Krzysztof

I couldn't find anything about this, I'm having an issue that one day just came up on the x220's ips screen. This isn't ghosting or white spots. Its hard to describe but its basically a large semi transparent rectangle on the screen that becomes darker as the screen flexes. Sometimes you can barely see it and other times it is really clear. Heres two pictures to hopefully illustrate the problem.http://imgur.com/8cDUDFH,GYh9VgZ

This morning, when I opened my computer, the black is screen and the power light is green. How can I solve this problem? I bought the laptop one month ago from outlet.lenovo.com Thanks

Answer:X220 screen is black when it starts

Did you power off the laptop yesterday?
Did you mean, that the laptop seemed to be turned on as you opened it this morning?

You can connect an external monitor to your X220. Maybe the video-out is switched to the external VGA-connector.
Try FnF7 to switch the video-output to the internal display after turning on and delay approx. 3-5 seconds between the FnF7 key-pressings.

Otherwise press and hold down the power-key until the laptop turns off, and start it again.

Hi there Lenovo SMEs! My wife's X220 is having an intermittent problem that recently has become much more frequent. Hello Community, I'm having some problems with my X220 at work. I installed Windows 8 on it a few months ago. Everything was working okay. But for the past couple of weeks I've had some screen problem. Once I close the lid on the laptop and reopen it again the screen stays black without showing me anything again. I have to do a hard reboot everytime that happens and it happens 2 times a week. When that happens I lose some important data and it's simply a pain in the a**. Maybe you guys had the same problem and found a solution. Or it might be a Hardware problem of some sort. But before throwing it in the garbage I just wanna see if someone has a solution for me. Thanks everyone and have a nice day. Regards, Phil

Hi there, I am facing a awkward problem with my X220 (2540M, SSD). Sometimes, most of the time when I play some games (Need for Speed for example), after some time, screen on my laptop goes blank. I have my AC adapter plugged in and battery is fully charged. There is only one more symptom left, the battery indicator on the back side of the lid is flashing orange. The game still runs in the background, I can hear it, but the screen is completely shut off. All I have to do at this stage is close the lid and open it again (I set my Windows to NOT to enter sleep mode, if I close the lid). The battery indicator then begins to light steadily in green colour (like the battery is fully charged) and everything is working fine again, and then, after some time, it happens again. Does anybody know, what might be wrong? Any help would be very appreciated! Thank you!

Hello I just joined this forum, this will be my first post.

Title pretty much says it. My computer has been having an issue with the screen where the picture is off/discolored on the left side of the screen along a well defined vertical line, see the image below. Sometimes the issue just goes away,  sometimes its really bad and sometimes its mild. There isn't much consistency as far timing goes but what is consistent is the fact that this takes place in the same spot every time. Computer runs fine other than this and the touchscreen still works, even when the colors on the display change in this strange fashion. What do you guys think could be the cause? Any advice would be appreciated. TIA.

Hi, Does the x220 have a known problem with the IPS screens ... In November I came across this issue https://twitter.com/colonelrosa/status/271035133967101952/photo/1 Nothing to do with the video card and the screen was flickering based on the opening position.. Thought it was a one off problem, send it back and got a replacement in December, fine.  Now only a few months later the same thing is happening to my replacement: https://twitter.com/colonelrosa/status/310716193529020416/photo/1 It's the same area too. My warranty is live until 2015, but I can't take a week off every few months when it dies again.  My opinion of Lenovo has changed somewhat, I thought the computers were supposed to be built like tanks but I guess they're not as reliable as I'd heard.  I'm getting in contact with support tomorrow, I guess I'm just venting here. *sigh*.

the previous X200/201 series did have the infinity glass option but they were not available in every world region.Regarding durability, they are about the same as the iPad or iPhone glass screen, which means having a screen protector is a good idea.

Over on the Faint Ghosting on X220 IPS screen thread, I mentioned (twice, actually) that I see gradient banding on my X220 IPS screen. Nobody else has brought up this issue, and at the moment it seems that I may have a defective screen. Here's a test image to check for gradient banding: http://www.lagom.nl/lcd-test/gradient.php. View and compare how it looks on other laptop and desktop monitors. Gradients appear smooth on my desktop PC (Dell monitor and low end Radeon card) and MacBook Pro, but banding is easily visible on my X220 with IPS screen. I even see faint banding when I view this forum, the subtle gradient background at the top of each post. My display is set to 32 bit color and 60 Hz refresh. I'll take it up with Lenovo support. Meanwhile, anybody else who has the issue can post and discuss here.

Answer:Gradient banding on X220 IPS screen

I also noticed this when looking at the gradient banding link in the above post - though it hasn't bothered me otherwise. Interestingly, I noticed the following artifact by following these steps: Open the gradient banding link, set your monitor to maximum brightness, and look at the large black-to-white and white-to-black gradients for about 10 seconds while they are centered on your screen.Next, scroll down until the white-to-black gradient is at the top edge of the window, and you can no longer see the black-to-white gradient.Notice how the image takes a few seconds to stabilize - as though the pixels haven't quite reached the correct color value completely. This is especially noticeable around the gray - dark gray area of the gradient and only at high brightnesses. These kinds of things make me wish you could replace laptop displays as easily as desktop ones. I've never once experienced any of the multitude of issues this laptop display has with my BENQ displays that I've had for over 5 years. Perhaps its true that TN displays are inferior to IPS. However, a high quality TN display is much more preferable to a defective IPS one.

I am having an issue with my Z50 which is running Windows 10.  The screen will suddenly go black while I am working.  Boots up fine. Happens maybe once a week or so.  When it goes black, the num lock and caps lock keys are still lit and I can hear it running, so it's not sleeping.   I can't find anything to bring it back up - moving the mouse or clicking buttons does no good.  Only solution is to hit the power button to put it to sleep, then wake it back up.  Anybody else encounter this?

Thinkad X220 Screen Flickers and goes blank The X220 screen is going blank and colors flicker randomly, I can move/wiggle the display to get the display back on. The symptoms are that the laptop display panel will flicker and then appear to switch off, but if you look closely you can still see a very faint image on the panel. Anyone else having this problem? Is it the display or inverter? I am sending the laptop back for warranty repair.

Answer:X220 Screen Flickers and goes blank

That's probably best.  It could be the cable or a loose cable connection, something is turning the backlight out.

Hello,My desktop (large) LCD panel (Benq) displays excellent colours when connected to my desktop, but they are terribly washed out, when plugged in to my x220. Does anybody have any idea if this can be fixed?First (and last) solution I tried was to update the driver manually (no changes). And that's about all I can think of, other than the obvious and not-so-realistic solutions such as1) buy a monitor with displayport - mine only comes with hdmi, so I use a displayport-to-hdmi dongle. Sure, I could buy a new monitor, but no guarantee it would make a change for better, not to mention the cost2) - change the dongle to another brand - I surely could, but there's absolutely no indication that this or that purchase would work better, and I already bought something which has good reviews. Perhaps this is a side-effect of this conversion, and that's that?3) why do you want to use your laptop at home when you have desktop next to you in the first place - use your desktop! - well, my x220 is much more powerful than my desktop, and I do use it to work on large number of very large images (up to 1.5GB tifs). Plus it uses up much less power. What I can't get is the reason for this significant colour degradation. Perhaps, it's due to the fact that my desktop comes with an old, but quite decent graphics card, while the x220, well. But then, the x220 "graphics chip, well", drives, very capably, the x220 lcd panel iself, I wouldn't think that the 1 year old Benq LCD is worse than the 5... Read more

Answer:X220 screen bright lines

Hi, maktube

I would firstly recommend hooking your machine up to an external monitor if possible. This will test and make sure that the issue lies in the LCD or a related component and not the motherboard or the video card. If the image is displayed properly on the external monitor, then the issue does lie with one of the components of the LCD panel. In this particular case, I am inclined to say that the LCD panel itself likely needs to be replaced due to the symptoms you're facing. I would recommend giving Lenovo Support a call at 1-800-426-7378 and discussing your options there.

Best of luck,
Adam

My cat so thoughtfully knocked my X220 off a shelf and cracked the screen.  I'm looking for the replacement part number but nothing returns under any of the search options in the Lenovo Parts lookup. Given this is an older model, I want to ensure that I am getting the right replacement screen.  Any help would be appreciated!

HiThere is a lot of threads about x220/x230 panels on the forum. Both laptops support the same panels, even the 1st generation x220 had, LP125WH2-SLB1.For example, have a look at the thread below:https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-X-Series-Laptops/Where-is-a-reliable-place-to-buy-X220-IPS-rep...Note, your laptop has TN panel - Lenovo FRU 93P5671, AUO B125XW01 V0. Officially compatible TN and IPS panels in the x220 are interchangeable w/o additional efforts.

ADMIN EDIT:

There are two items being discussed in this thread:

1) A backlight bleed issue as described by SR45 - we are investigating this, but have seen only a couple users noting this so far.

2) "Ghosting" or persistence of  an after-image phenomena after a static image is maintained on the display for 15 or more.   This comprises the bulk of the discussion on this thread.

Not all customers have observed this, nor view it as an "issue".  See related thread with counter point.

Hi community & lenovo support team, I've gone throught the whole forum searching for a similar issue so that I wouldn't need to bother with a new post, but seems like I am the only one. I own a Thinkpad X220 (4291-NB5), which includes the IPS 'HD' display. It works well and I love the system, but one thing seems to be wrong: It is hard to describe and I hope someone can try it by himself on this forum. When my desktop background is black and no windows are opened (only the taskbar is shown), then the screen seems to switch down the quality, it looks like it is going into a 265 color mode or kinda raises the contrast to extreme levels, so that the colors of the taskbar look very flashy and all icons seem to be 'pixelated'. When I then open a window, the screen needs up to 5 seconds to adjust. Within these 5 seconds, some colors are not clearly shown, menus and window title bars are looking weird. It slowly adjusts until it looks normal again. This is reproducible with a black desktop background (I needed to switch to a colorful background image to prevent this), but also sometimes noticable when opening the lid after leaving it closed for a while (not in standby) - and that's really annoying! Anyone else have this problem? I use the latest drivers from the Lenovo website, all utilities are installed, and I haven't changed anything in the Intel graphics settings. Cheers

Hi, First post here but looking for info on a really bizarre problem. tl;dr - Installed 2 separate IPS screens and both had identical dead pixels in an unusual pattern.  My X220 is out of warranty for starters, but I ordered a replacement IPS panel off a reputable source on eBay to replace my existing TN panel as an upgrade.Upon receiving it, I had a weird shape of dead pixels in the bottom left corner of my screen which was in the shape of the number 3 - very unusual looking. I then RMA'd the screen and received a new one .... however I have the same problem.A weird shape down the bottom left of the screen which is full of dead pixels - about 20 black pixels in total.I tried using 'unstick' kind of applications to get the pixels working again but had no joy. Once I fit my TN panel back on, the issue disappears straight away. Between each IPS screen, I actually replaced my i5 motherboard with an i7 motherboard, so it can't be the onboard graphics that's causing the issue. 2 separate mobos, 2 separate screens ... same problem.Common factors are inverter and also the cable for the screen... but if it's working fine on my TN panel, I can't see that as the problem. Here is a picture of it - hopefully someone can shed some light on this before I try RMA this one as well. http://i57.tinypic.com/156zm39.jpg

Answer:X220 - New IPS Screen LOTS of dead pixels

Welcome to the forum!

Dead pixels cannot be fixed by swapping the LED card or cable, it's a defect on the panel itself.

I can only speculate about a bad batch of panels, getting two with the same mistake is not something happening every day I guess.

I'd send it back and ask for a new panel.

Problem:  Windows virtual PC captures the mouse pointer, and the hotkey combo to release the pointer to the host OS (Win7) is Ctrl-Alt-Left arrow.    When I type that key combination, it's interpreted as a screen orientation chage to portrait mode, top to left.Workaround: Minimize all with WIndows-M key combination., which also releases mouse control back to Win7  I've tried:1. Right click Desktop, Graphics Options, Hot Keys, Disable.2. Right click desktop,  Graphics Properties, Options and Support, Hot Key Manager. Unchecked the Enable box, or change the hotkey for "Rotate to 90 degrees"to something other than ctrl-alt-Left. None of these work, the screen still rotates to the left when I hit Ctrl-Alt-Left arrow. The video driver is at current level. Any thoughts?

Assuming this is the Intel graphics panel. Press ctrl+alt+F12 to get the intel control panel up. Enter advance mode and go into options. You'll see the enable/disable there. Or you can remap the keys.

The two small rubber latches that hold the screen in place when closed have broken off my tablet. My tablet has warranty until 2015 and it hasn't been used heavily, Lenovo have said these aren't covered by the warranty. Does anyone know where I can get some replacements? Hi all, I was just wondering, how good/ bad is the X220's 12.5" screen size from a programming perspective? Is the small size + IPS worth it?My problem is that I want to try it out before buying it. Does anybody know a store in the GTA (Greater Toronto Area) where I can go and see a X220 in real-life? Thanks!

Answer:X220 screen size from a programmer's perspective

If you are doing lot of programming, i would probably get a 14 inch with HD+ LCD. The 12.5 inch may not fit what you need, unless you are using it docked with external monitors when you are a desk. Otherwise something like T420 fits the bill better.

What am I missing here ?

Solved!

Answer:X220 Pen orientation does not change with screen rotation

I own the X201T, but since you have a clean install I would probably try the following: 1. Remove all Wacom/Lenovo/Windows (ISD Tablet) touch drivers from within Control Panel --> Programs & Features2. Fire up Windows Update and see if it finds a driver for you3. If it does, let it install it and try if that works out If it doesn't work, remove everything again and try the same with Lenovo's update utility. Usually when either one detects that the tablet drivers are missing, they fetch the newest ones. Of course the newest ones aren't always the best, but.. I had a lot of problems with Wacom and Lenovo's drivers, so I eventually let Windows Update fetch them for me. I did lose pressure sensitivity in Photoshop and ended up installing Fujitsu's drivers, but that's another story entirely..

The screen on my X220 Tablet has been shutting down when I rotate it from tablet to laptop positions when "Auto Rotate is enabaled.. When this happens, the only way I've found to get the screen back is to shut down and reboot.(Note: the backlight stays on, but the screen is blank and unresponsive.)I've found that by resetting the tablet utility options to "ActiveRotate" only ("Auto  Rotate" off) it seems to work.I guess it's not a big deal, but I hate it when things don't work. Any suggestions as to why, or better yet, how to fix?

Answer:X220 Tablet Screen shuts down when rotated

Hi, Jetsyfix

I'm not sure what is causing the issue, but a driver update may help. Here you can find all the possible driver updates for your system. There is a fairly recent BIOS update for your machine that may help, but I would update all drivers as needed and see if it helps.

Best of luck,
Adam

I bought my x220 with IPS screen new from Lenovo in September 2011. Last week the A/C adapter died and was replaced under warranty. This week the screen has started acting strangely: 1. image shakes, it looks a bit like an iPhone when you are moving icons around...the entire screen image jitters back and forth for a few seconds, then snaps back to normal 2. image fades slowly from normal to 'scrambled'...I'm not sure how to describe it but the screen is still on, the image is just unreadable..it's not completely random as the contents are still somewhat recognizable (i.e. I can spot the mouse pointer if I look closely). after a few seconds it snaps back to normal. Is this one of the failing-motherboard symptoms? Thanks!

I have a few X220 around me. I have one, my classmates have 2, and one of my colleagues has one. They all have damaged Screen Bezel corner, like in the pictures:http://img607.imageshack.us/img607/4258/x220bezeldamage004.jpghttp://img341.imageshack.us/img341/6492/x220bezeldamage002.jpghttp://img687.imageshack.us/img687/9938/x220bezeldamage001.jpg One of all those X220 have also damaged upper left corner, but mostly they are on the upper right corner. I handle my laptop with care. I don't think all these are due to force strike on the corner. Even if I really accidently stroke the upper right corner, I don't think a corner that is so easy to be damaged a good thing. Does any of you have the same thing here?

Not out of the box, I have read about people getting this done, but soldering to the motherboard is involved and you loose the brightness control.
