X230 options in the UK - does lenovo release more choices for configuration?

Question: X230 options in the UK - does lenovo release more choices for configuration?

Hi there I posted this on another forum, but thought it might get more of a response on the lenovo forum, so apologies if anyone has read this before.I need a new laptop soon, my T60 is on its last legs, but has lasted a great length of time. I am considering buying either the x220 or the x230, but I live in the UK and the X230 is only available with 2 processor options, the i5 3210 or else the i7. The latter makes it considerably more expensive and probably is too much for what I need. Lenovo is also not letting me upgrade the screen from the default option, as the upgrade is the 3 x 3 antenna (?) so I can't get the webcam.I was originally going to really spec up the 220 and go for that, but I have heard about screen warping problems (my other half has a t400s and has been plagued by the chassis cracking at the palm rests) so I want to avoid that. I know all the other major X220 problems such as throttling have been fixed, one of the benefits of getting a tried and tested machine.I guess my question really is which one should I buy... I am not a gamer, I will be using it for running SPSS, a statistics package; watching movies and streaming etc.Would I be better getting the sale price on the 220 now or do I wait to see if the x230 has more configurations for the uk in the next couple of months? (does lenovo usually increase the options for configuration?) I don't want to lost a good deal on the 220.What do I do? I am very confused! Many thanks for your helpAlison

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I've had my X220 for over a year and haven't had any warping problem.

Hello all, I have serious network configuration issue (including both, WiFi and Ethernet). When I enter IPv4 configuration, next time I open again the configuration page, the settings are put into automatic mode (so no pre-entered IPs there). But ipconfig shows the entered IPs. Some times ipconfig also show 3 or 4 different gateways, but opening the Network adapters configuration page, all is set to automatic, so I put it into manual mode, then again to automatic mode and disable + enable adapter, then it'll go to dhcp. This issue is really annoying, I had it before the clean install, it worked some time after reinstall, but now the issue came back again. Using Windows 8.1 ProAll drivers are up-to-date. Any help is really, really appriciated,Thanks in advance,Kunnar

Hello, I recently purchased x230 with Windows 8.I installed Ubuntu 12.0 (attempting to dual boot).  Unfortuantely, Windows 8 is no longer accessible(UEFI error comes up on boot), the restore partition is also corrup ("required partition cannot be found").I attempted to install win 8 PRO that I purchased from scratch.  It failes because the Windows 8 key embedded into the EFI doesn't match the new Windows 8 PRO that I have on DVD. I chatted with Lenovo support, asking to purchase restore DVDs for my laptop - I was told that it's not possible (after going thorugh a couple of people and wasting 1.5 hours on chat_ Please provide some support as it is unacceptable that I cannot install clean version of WIndows 8 and the restore disks are not available from Lenovo. Thank You.

Hi guys, The configuration options on the T440 range seems strangely restricted where only the lower end non touch screen can be ordered with any variant of windows 7 (professional)  Is there some way to obtain a higher end touch enabled model with Windows 7 Ultimate installed, or are my 2000 ready-to-be-spent pounds sterling heading to another manufacturer's pockets? thanks

Answer:Lenovo configuration options

I'd just configure the hardware as you wish, get one with a downgrade key, then install Windows 7 yourself later.

Would someone point me to some "master lists" of recommended choices for the following in IE6:

Tools/Internet Options/Security/Custom Level/Security Settings

And,

Tools/Internet Options/Advanced

I have fiddled with both of them over time, but recently, in trying to fix a scripting problem, I've fiddled with them so much I've got even more of a problem, so I need to go through them once and for all and get them right.

I can restore it all to default status, but then I'd have to start with the trial & error method of turning one thing on and another off, etc.

Surely someone smarter than me has been through this process of trying to balance functionality with security, and has posted their results.

Thanks for any help.

98SE, IE6, dial-up ISP, PII 400. I've got all the patches & updates.

I'm on a Gateway laptop (MT6451). I'm running Windows 7, but am interested in trying Linux. I've installed Ubuntu into a separate partition. When I boot the computer, it asks which OS I'd like to boot into (Win7, or Ubuntu) and to select the desired one with the arrow keys.

When I press the down (or up) arrow key once (regardless of how long I hold it down), the highlighted option goes from Windows 7, to Ubuntu, back to Windows 7. This also happens when I go into the normal BIOS settings. Whenever going through options, the arrow keys skip an option and go to the next one.

Would this be a driver problem, OS problem, or stricly BIOS problem? Are there any steps I could take to figure that out or if any of you already know what the problem is, what can I do to solve this issue?

Thanks for the help.

Answer:BIOS skips choices, makes options unselectable.

Did ya try another keyboard? Try just tapping the key if you haven't yet. Is it OK when you do get into Windows?

I am leaning towards buying a Lenovo thinkpad x230 with 6 cell main battery as well as a 44++ 9 cell battery and a 19+ six cell battery configuration (6 +9+6 cell battery configuration). My queries are1. Can all three of the batteries work in conjunction without any issues?2. Do i need to charge the batteries separately or they all get charged simultaneously while i plug a charger in the laptop?3. Is there any other battery option ( like a 9 cell main plus a 44++ 9 cell and a 19+ 6 cell, i.e. 9+9+6 cells) that can work ?

Is there a way to specify different actions for the pen buttons?  For example, when using one specific program, I'd like the side button to function as if it were the shift key instead of the right-click but then have it operate as the standard right-click when in Windows or other programs. Is this a native functionality or is there a third-party program available that could give me such options?

Answer:X230 Tablet Pen Options

aardvarky, This is an excellent question! I definitely understand your wants! Officially, it needs to be a setting inside the software you want to use the digitizer pen in.

Examples:

With the new TBT2 there is a software called QuickSnip, insdie the QuickSnip settings you can change the digitizer pen button from right click to screen capture.

Inside OneNote you can change the settings of the Pen Buttons, here is a link to a X230T Digitizer Pen Input Youtube video that may have more clairification.

So, as Digitizer Pen Technology becomes more popular, I believe we will begin seeing more Applications and Software adding the technology to enhance their user customizations.

Question: X230 Power Options

However I try to change the Power Options/Manager the unit just sleeps/hibernates after about 60 secs after which it needs the password to reopen.    No alternative shut down options have any effect.  Is there some conflict with Windows 8/ 64 currently installed?  Thanks for any clues.   Just a bit frustrating.

Answer:X230 Power Options

Perhaps pick a standard Windows Power Plan (I use Balanced) and then set the options with Windows Power Management. I set it Sleep Never on AC, Sleep after 20 minutes on Battery, and never Hibernate. It does what I tell it to do. Windows 8 Pro 64-bit. If you continue to have issues, uninstall Lenovo Power Management via Control Panel. Make sure all Lenovo drivers are up to date before doing this. Updates have occurred as recently as May 20 (4 days ago). .... JDH

@Lead was kind enough to point out the Ultrabase as an option for docking the X230. I was using an extra 433830U mini-dock I bought for my W520. I suppose the new 433815U with USB 3.0 might be a good choice with the X230. I'm able to drive two external monitors off the mini-dock. It appears to me that the Ultrabase has but one Displayport connector. Does anyone have a recommendation of one over the other (Ultrabase vs. mini-dock)?

Question: X230 WWAN Options

Hi, I did some searches and couldn't really find what I was looking for.  I also used the chat function and got useless responses.  I am simply looking for a WWAN modem that I can install into my laptop that supports t-mobile USA. Thanks for your responses.

Answer:X230 WWAN Options

Sierra Wireless mc8355 (Gobi 3000) supports almost any network and carrier around the world. But if you'd like to get the higher speed of wwan connection (more then DL 14,4 mbit/s it provides) you should purchase Sony Ericsson h5321w or f5521gw. In this case you can't connect to CDMA/EV-DO network if you'll decide to do it in the future. Note that modem must be with Lenovo FRU.For the future: for UMTS network (T-Mobile is that) do not use Lenovo Mobile Broadband Activation application.

Hello:

I currently have the following set up:

Windows Vista Home Premium 64bit - SP1
ASUS M2A-VM (AMD 690G)
AMD Athlon64 AM2 3800+
Crucial Rendition/Transend 4GB PC5400 667Mhz RAM
Seagate 320GB 7200RPM (SATA2 16MB Cache)

I have Vista on a 50GB partition, 15GB of unallocated (I was going to install Ubuntu here) and a 255GB partition (F: Drive).

I have just purchased a Seagate 1TB internal HDD (SATA2 32MB Cache) to add to my set up.

I would like to run both Vista and Ubuntu (8.10). I would greatly appreciate any feedback or suggestions on optimizing my set up to achieve this. I have searched and found some info on running dual OS's from the same HDD. I am not sure if this would be the best way to go or if I should install Ubuntu on the 320GB and move Vista to the 1TB?

This is my first post here and I apologize if this is not the correct area to ask my question.

I built my current system myself and have average/decent knowledge in this area.

I was looking earlier today at the choices they have available for the X61 and X61s (I know, lame, but X300 is more than I want to spend right now). For the X61s they offer a choice of 2 batteries, but the only one that is available without extra delay is the 8 cell battery; the other adds an extra 3 or so weeks to shipping date. I don't want the 8 cell since it weighs 1 lb and I'm trying to keep the weight down. So I went to accessories to see if I could purchase a different battery seperately. Yet when I select the X61s, model 7768 does not appear. Model 7768 is the one currently offered on the Lenovo site. For accessories (for battery accessories anyway) only two models show up for the X61s- I think something like 7770 and 7771. Anyone know what's up with that? Is that an older model of the X61s that lenovo is offereing since it's number is lower? I was hoping to purchase a slim line battery - is that not made for the 7768?or at least a lighter weight 4 cell. (plus I've been assumming I could switch between different types of batteries provided it's made for that line- is that right?). anyone know why 7768 does not show up at all? are there no batteries availalbe for it? or would one of the ones listed for a different x61s work? Other questions I have are on heat. I know a lot of people have remarked how hot it gets even at low CPUs for some people. Is there any difference in heat production between the x61 and the x61s- they have different speed gHZ processors, ... Read more

Answer:choices offered now on lenovo site for x61s and X60 (and battery and heat)

Hmm may I just start off by saying the X61 is not lame =) I can't help you much with the detailed questions, I'll just share from my experience. The standard battery is by itself quite good!Running "max battery" with full brightness, it runs for 6 hours+. "Max performance" still gives 3-4 hours !Concerning heat. Unless the temperature around is already hot, I haven't felt uncomfortable having my X61 on my lap for a longer period of time.

Dear All,I tried to place an order with Lenovo (1-866-96-Think).I am unable to reach a sales-rep that actually knows what Lenovo has to offer.I need an X300 with the TDK-SSD, instead of the Samsung SSD. They are both listed as stock items for the X300. The reason is FDE (Full Disk Encryption). When I talked to the Sales-Reps, their statements and replies were not knowledgable, see below:1. "What is FDE?" (ok abbreviation is new)2. "Consumers do not need encryption, only Government Institutions need encryption."3. "Yes, the bay battary and the DVD are USER-Swapapble" Are you sure? "Yes, I am sure" (Service manual shows you need to remove Keyboard)4. "The AT&T WWAN Card is NOT Sim-Locked, and you can put any SIM from any provider you choose to subscribe to." "Lenovo doesn't ship Locked hardware." (tell that to anyone who tries to install non-IBM/Lenovo mini-PCIe cards...) - this they cleared with supervisor, eventually saying its Locked after I asked for it in writing on my order slip.I just want X300 with TDK-SSD, GSM-Based WWAN, and a 6-cell battary.(changed my mind about Bay-battary once I learned its not User-Swappable)[by the way, the reason I need FDE is that I have clients who require me and my colleagues to comply with FIPS standard. Which is pending ammendments for Hardware encryption when using non-tamper-proof machine, after recent Princeton report]Thank you

Actually, I may stand corrected about the DVD-Battary swapping. A video that shows you need to unscrew a single screw on the bottm, to eject the DVD-drive. Disk 1: Hard Drive
Disk 2: CD ROM
Disk 3: Floptical
Disk 4: CD ROM Burner--KHypermedia CD-ReWriter (48x Write, 24x Rewirte, 48x Read) with Nero Express Software

Ever since my son installed the additional 128MB memory to the 64MB that came with the computer and the CD ROM Burner described above, the computer is showing messages on startup that never were there before. This only happens when the computer is cold. If it is turned off and then turned right back on, these messages do not appear.

Here is what happens when I turn the computer on:
Red Compaq logo appears followed by a message (white printing on a black background): "The following configuration options were automatically updated: Disk 1: 9541(MB), Disk 2: CD ROM, Disk 3: Floptical." This is followed by a short snapping noise. The Compaq logo again appears followed by a similar message, only this time making reference to four disks instead of three. "The following configuration options were automatically updated: Disk 1: 9541(MB), Disk 2: CD ROM, Disk 3: Floptical, Disk 4: CD ROM." This message is followed by a short snapping noise like before. The Compaq logo again appears and Windows then loads normally--the way it used to load.

Because the drives all seem to work, perhaps this would be in the category of an annoyance rather than an error. I do not have a lot of experience with computers and will not make any adjustments inside the computer but ... Read more

I would like to buy U430 laptop, but I don't see how I can configure options like CPU, Memory Size etc... I just have an option to select a model and no way to customize it.  Here is the page I go to:http://shop.lenovo.com/us/en/laptops/ideapad/u-series/u430-touch I tried several other types like YOGA, but don't see any configuration options also. Am I missing something, or you can't build Custom Lenovo Laptop any more?

Answer:Custom Configuration options for new U430

Hello mag20, welcome to this forum.

Yes, you can build a Custom Lenovo Laptop. However, you need to call, or chat on line, with the sales team. The website has some customization options for their ThinkPads, which you can do on line. For example, see the T440s page:

http://shop.lenovo.com/us/en/laptops/thinkpad/t-series/t440s/

If you want a U430 Touch, it would be better to know what possible options are available in that system, before you call, or chat. The best way to know this, is to read the part list, in the Hardware Maintenance Manual (HMM). Here is the HMM for the U430 Touch:

Apparently there is no way to configure Slide Show to view the selected images at 100%, and not scaled up to full screen.

Or is there?

Mac OS X gives you that option either with Preview or the OS Quick Look feature. And many of the web-res images I'm viewing are only 600px at the longest dimension. You can imagine what these look like at full screen, 1680x1050.

Anyone?

Answer:Win 7 Slide Show Configuration Options?

Hmm, maybe Center? No idea, sorry; I'm fine with Fit.

Other than that (and Tile), the other options appear to resize the image.

Hi

I recently purchased an Asus N56VJ with Windows 8 pre-installed. At first I was trying to downgrade to Windows 7, but could not get past the windows splash screen trying to do a clean install . Anyway, while I was trying to figure out how to install windows 7, I was messing around in the bios. I decided to just stick with the Windows 8, but my bios is screwed up. I do not have any boot configuration options anymore. I tried to flash my bios, but the bios was still the same. I did a full reset on my machine, and still no change in the bios. Is there any way to get my bios options back to the factory settings with all the options? Thanks in advance for any help that can be provided.

Answer:What options do i want for system configuration utility

DO NOT use msconfig to manage startup options. And don't uncheck anything you don't understand. Download and use Mike Lin's Startup Control Panel to manage startup items. It will not let you remove anything that will cause problems.

Over and over again my computer wants to reboot then bring up the following message:

The following configuration options were automatically updated:

I've searched the 'net over and over about what's going on here but I can't seem to stop this from happening.
I've tried to turn network boot off, update the BIOS, change boot order and made sure the clock is correct but none of them seem to do anything.

I'm currently running Windows 10 Enterprise x64
The model is an HP Compaq 8000 Elite CMT PC

Processor is an Intel Core 2 Duo CPU E8400 @ 3.00GHz, 3000 Mhz, 2 Cores, 2 Log
BIOS should be up-to-date (I believe) HP 786G7 v01.14, 10/14/2015

I'll glady give any more details/info that could help resolve this!

Cheers.

Have you just upgraded? Clean installed? Have you had Win 10 running successfully and now sthg has gone wrong? If so, what happened before this?

This tells me you need to press F10 to get into the BIOS aka setup.

When in there, use the arrow keys and look for the Boot tab section.
Make sure that the 1 TB WDC WD1000FYPS-01ZKB0
your internal hard drive is the first boot device.
The CD/DVD drive might be listed first but since you removed it, the computer is confused.

typed "msconfig" (sans parentheses) into searchbar

clicked "Boot" tab

Nothing is greyed out, yet there is no response when I click on any of the "Boot options"; including "Safe boot" (and any of its sub selections including Minimal, Alternative shell, Active Directory repair or network, 'No GUI boot', 'Boot log', 'Base Video' or "OS boot information".

"Advanced Options" will not open nor does "Timeout accept any input".

Have tried right-clicking msconfig and "Run as Administrator" without success.

All the options under the other tabs (General, Services, Startup, Tools) seem to be working.

I'm having a problem with my audio on my computer. I have a d925xecv2 motherboard with integrated realtek HD audio 5.1. I'm not using my 5.1 sound and am only using stereo. When I go into Speaker Setup in windows 7, this is what it looks like:

As you can see, there are no speaker setup configuration options. There isn't "setero" or "5.1" or anything... How do I force Windows 7 to use Stereo Speakers?

I've uninstalled my realtek drivers and let windows 7 install the drivers, yet I still get no options for audio channels. There is also only the green jack plugged into the computer.

If I use the realtek audio drivers, when I go into those settings and try to set it to stereo, when I quit and open it backup, it automatically sets it to 8CH.

Thank you for any help.

Answer:New Lenovo X230

You can do two things: 1. Go to Windows Anytime Upgrade and purchase the Pro feature. This is the easiest way to upgrade, but it costs a small amount to do this. 2. Try booting from the Windows 7 DVD and see if it will let you start it and install the upgrade. You will need the license key from the Windows 7 DVD to do this. ... JDH

I changed the hard disk after a HDD failure in my Z61m and I'm trying to reinstall Win XP but I cannot boot from CD/DVD. I'm trying to access the BIOS to check if the boot otpion from CD/DVD is enabled. I turn on the PC, hit F1, on the screen appears 'Entering BIOS Setup Utility' but after few seconds the screen becomes black and nothing happens. I tried to hit ESC instead of F1 and a boot screen appears: I can see the RAM check, the HDD is recognized and identified, but then the screen becomes black again. If I hit F1 while the RAM check is running, it appears 'Entering Setup...' but again nothing happens. With F12, it appears 'Preparing Boot Device List' for about 15 seconds and then the screen becomes black as well. The only thing I can do is turn off the PC. So, the situation is: 1) The original HDD failed: I tried it in an external SATA case and it doesn't work. 2) The new hard disk seems to be correctly recognized and identified during initial system checks. 3) The Win XP CD works: I tried it in another notebook and I was able to boot and launch Windows set up. 4) The CD/DVD player spins, its LED lights, it makes the regular sound. Thank you in advance for your suggestions.

Thinkpad T400 2764CTO running Windows 7 Home Premium 64 PC only 2 weeks old, very little on it, but getting slower and slower. Finally found the configuration for the startup menu and disabled several things I knew I didn't want at startup. Is there a specific Lenovo option [that does not obviously have anything to to with WIE] in the startup menu that, if disabled, will stop the WIE browser from being launched? How do I know which options are not safe to disable when attempting to slim down startup configuration for faster/more reliable performance? Thanks,Ann

Hello,So, first of all, I'm not english, so I'm sorry for the following mistakes.Let's start.1 year ago I've bought a lenovo x230 netbook with Windows 8, intel core i7 + 8 gb ram + SSD. [still using these specs]Okay. After 1 month of usage, the display started to have some problems. From the left to right, the 3/7 part of the display is changing in all the colors while using. It depends on what color is the page opened. If it's white, this part of the display is black with some "running" white lines, if it's blue - red and so on.No problem ; acording to the warranty, the display has been changed. It was ok.Since august 2014 I didn't use the laptop again. I started using it in April 2015. In may, the display started to have that problem again, but I've read on your forum that I need to put the display on 60Hz and on High performance mode to fix it, and that's what I did. At the beggining of June, the problem was back, and it is still on 60Hz and high performance mode.3 days ago, my laptop started to make another problem ; CHARGING.It doesn't want to charge.  If I just plug in, it stays with the battery on 0%, and it doesn't open because of the missing electricity, but I've realised something. If I move the end of the charger [near the part which get into that yellow circle where the end of the charger must be, hope you understand] higher than 10-15 CMs it DOES charge. But now it doesn't charge even if I put it in the position I've said before. fre_madrid,1. unplug power cable and battery, press and hold the power button during 30 sec, plug the battery and cable again, try to boot laptop.2. OR if you are familiar with disassembling of keyboard and palmrest do it, then unplug connector of small yellow battery under palmrest (near FPR) during several minuts. Assemble the laptop and try to boot. If laptop will boot go to BIOS setup, press F9 and save default settings, set and save your settings. If that actions will not resolve the issue I'm afraid you have to contact with Lenovo support.

Question: Lenovo X230 setup

Hi, everyone,A quick question. I have an x230 on the way and am looking to set up my workspace in a specific way. Here is what I want: an external monitor that will allow me to move the cursor from the laptop screen to the other monitor. So, in essence, a dual monitor set-up but with the laptop screen as one of the monitors. I would also like to be able to use a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse while in this set-up. Do I need the UltraSeries 3 dock, or something else? Thanks!Parker

Answer:Lenovo X230 setup

Hi, Parker

You should be able to accomplish this without a docking station. The X230 supports a dual independent display and has a VGA port and a Mini DisplayPort. So if you have a monitor with one of these connections and hook it up to your laptop, then it should work. You will need to make sure that you Extend the display and not Duplicate it. Duplicate will give you the same image on both screens. You can just use Win + P to set it appropriately.

As for the Bluetooth keyboard and mouse, you should have no issues here either. Provided Bluetooth is turned on in the system and you have compatible Bluetooth peripherals, it should work like a charm once they've been paired.

Hope it helps,
Adam

I would wan to find out if I can install  mSATA SSD 128gb into the x230 and main harddrive as a storage?

Solved!

Go to Solution.

Answer:Lenovo Think Pad x230 and mSATA SSD

Hi, odessit

This should be possible. There is a slot for an mSATA drive in the X230, as shown here. Also shown in that link is that an mSATA is a user-replaceable part. After purchasing your SSD, then all you will need to do is install it per the instructions here (pp. 70) Also, you will likely need to download this firmware update after installing the drive. This will allow the BIOS to recognize the SSD if you plan to use it as the C: drive of the system. The update can be found here.

Hope it helps,
Adam

Hi All! I'm sorry to sound like a bit of a newb here, but i'm looking for a little bit of assistance with my x230 laptop.  I bought the laptop back in september with windows 7 professional.  A couple months later, I upgraded to windows 8 only to not really like it too much and decide for now I want to revert back to Windows 7.  Not knowing what my options were, I installed Windows 7 Ultimate back on the machine through an external cd drive, but now I'm missing about 100gb from my main drive, I ordered a 500gb 7200 rpm drive but now I only have about 350 GB available after the clean install.  I wasn't too sure how the recovery options on the x230 worked.  I see that next to my main C drive, there is another drive there located "Recovery" It has about 75% of the disk space being taken up but there is absolutely nothing within the actual drive when I actually click it.  It's probably too late, but is there any way to actually take my laptop back to the way it was when I first bought it? I only ask because it seems there's something on that recovery drive but I just can't figure out what it is.  I would appreciate any help at all, I'm sorry for sounding like such a newb with this stuff!

Answer:Lenovo x230 Recovery

Hi, Flyerfan16

If you are viewing your drives in Disk Management, how big is the Recovery partition? The partitions from Lenovo are normally between 7 GB and 10 GB when the machine ships. If the original partition is still on the drive, then you should be able to recover to the settings when the machine was first purchased.

You can attempt recovery by starting the machine as normal and then pressing Enter repeatedly to interrupt startup. A menu should then appear, with an option available to recover your system. Press the associated key for this action and then follow the prompts. If all works well, you should be able to go back to the way it was. If you choose this option, make sure to back up all files that you wish to keep that are currently on the system.

Hope it helps,
Adam

What command line options are present to do this?
I am looking to deploy this via SCCM.

From my knowledge the Toshiba value added package contains different single Toshiba applications. These applications would be installed one after another.
You have to execute the setup.exe / installation.exe to get the procedure started? other options are not known to me?

I have a Lenovo x230 laptop with an i7 processor that starts the second time. This means that when you first turn on, there is a black screen. The restart must be forced and then normally turns on. I tried to use an external screen, tricks with disconnecting the battery and pressing the switch, CMOS battery, RAM memory replacement - nothing did not succeed. On this motherboard, the service replaced the BIOS chips due to failure in the upgrade. They said that the computer would not work anyway. The computer, however, works, but after the second launch - which is annoying. I have updated the BIOS on my own, which did not solve the problem. Once the computer starts, it works very steadily and without problems. I have not found a similar case anywhere on the internet.

I flashed my BIOS to the newest version (like 2.67 or something?) but my TOLUD is 3.5 GB (dfa00000). I thought the BIOS update was supposed to fix this? I only have 8GB of RAM so the 16GB problem shouldn't affect me either? Anyone know what might be wrong? When reading some forums I saw that people who updated their BIOS were able to fix their problem as long as they only had 8 gigs of ram, which is why im confused I still have DFA00000. Will it still work regaurdless of this? I thought the update was supposed to fix this.

2 options come to my mind1) you can look for bluetooth expresscard (x220 has a slot, so I'm guessing x230 has it as well)2) you can put it in mini-PCIe slot (for the WWAN card or mSATA SSD), assuming it's empty now, ie. you purchased without WWAN

I have a Lenovo ThinkPad X230 (which I love dearly) and have a few question about ports and booting.  I would first like to verify that the port on the left side of the laptop directly above one of the USB ports is indeed an ExpressCard 54.  I have searched the web, but have yet to find a definite answer, and my user manual simply stated "ExpressCard."  Furthermore, I would like to know if it is possible to boot an operating system from said port using an ExpressCard 34 SSD (64GB).  I have the intention of installing openSUSE 12.3 to the potential SSD and be able to boot from it.  I greatly appreciate any help.  I  would post an image of said port, but I am being told the image file is much too large.

Dear support, My Thinkpad X230 (NZD78MH 12.5", 3520M, 180GB, W7) recently started to frequently overheat. It happens during rather normal operation, such as browsing the internet or playing video on youtube. This causes the fan to run on maximum capacity and computer processes to slow down significantly.  As the image shows below, taken after playing a random youtube video, temperatures of ~103C are typical.  Should I have it serviced? Please help. Best regards, Matthias

Answer:Lenovo X230 overheating problem

Hi,definitely, yes. Laptop should be serviced.Or disassemble it yourself and replace thermal compaund between CPU and heatsink.

i have upgraded  X230 harddrive and installed OS from Backup, my fingerprint did work fine after upgrade for 3 month after that fingerprint just started giving error  E7210005 (cannot enrolluser, cannot update passport, cannot find finger print sensor), but in the device mananger panel it show that it is workng properly, when i open biometrics in control panel it shows that my device is not availabe.(i have also allowed fingerprint port in the bios). i reinstalled windows, update finger print drivers and software (from lenovo and also tried the ones from original manufacture-Authen tech). i tried to change the group policy setting, and also created new user wit admin privillages and also enabled all the sevice settings. but the problem error remains the same, it has been a moth now trying to search for solution but still nothing has come up. wat worries me is that the device manger shows that the FP device is working properly

Answer:Lenovo X230 FingerPrint Error

If you re-installed Windows and this problem still happens, I'd say there's a strong possibility that your fingerprint sensor has failed and needs to be replaced.  Even if the device looks OK in Device Manager, this really doesn't mean much.  All it means is that Windows can talk to the USB device that hosts the fingerprint sensor, but the fingerprint sensor itself could still be malfunctioning.

Some things that can help confirm hardware problem:
1.  Shut the system off, does fingerprint green LED flash slowly?  If so it means that the sensor contains some fingerprint templates so lets try to clear them.
2.  Turn the system on and press F1 to enter BIOS setup
3.  Go to the Security menu and choose Fingerprint, then clear the fingerprint sensor.  You should see a message about success or failure.  Failure definitely means HW problem.
4.  If you see a message about success clearing the fingerprint sensor from BIOS, then shut the system off again.  The green LED should not be flashing anymore because you cleared the sensor in BIOS.  If the green LED still flashes, then it means HW problem because the fingerprint templates were not really cleared.

So try the above steps to try to confirm the HW problem, or just call service in your country and request help.

I've bought the Lenovo X230 with the broken battery (the PM showes 68% charging and no more, asks for the battery replacement). I've tried 3 different good-working batteries from X220 which were supposed to work on X230, but they don't. When starting the laptop with that battery, it stops with the information:" The battery installesd is not supported by this system and will not charge. Please replace the battery with the correct Lenovo battery for this system. Press the ESC to continue".  And after pressing the ESC key, it starts to work, but the PM still writes that the battery is not correct and it doesn't charge. What could it be?

Answer:Lenovo x230 battery problem

Hi,x230 doesn't support the batteries of old 29 series (x220 did). Only hw protected batteries 44 series are being supported by x230 (and 19+ series, external).Batteries of 29 series can only be discharged in x230.Try to perform the original (x230's) battery reset using Lenovo power manager feature.

Hi All,

I currently have a MESH computer, built by them because i didn't have the balls to build it myself. It was a top spec computer when i bought it 6 ish years ago... The specs are as follows:
PSU: HEC-550TD-PTE (550W)
motherboard: asus P5B-TMX/S
windows 7 32bit
intel core 2 duo 6400 at 2.13 GHz
NVIDIA GeForce 7900 GS
2 gig ram (2x1gb)
SoundBlaster XiFi Xtreme Audio card
1x cheap DVD drive
2x hard drives totalling 750 Gb, easily enough for me
Ralink RT2500 Wireless LAN Card

It currently is running two screens on full HD resolution, one 22" and one 23" (both samsung of course). When on just chrome and itunes, music doesn't play smoothly, and sounds like its being remixed, so its time to revamp it i think. i recently upgraded from XP to win7, but 32 bit version.

I assume that memory needs increasing, that's always the case, and i am looking to get an i5 or i7 on a 64 bit motherboard capable of DDR3 and USB3.
Given my heavy screen usage, should I get a new all singing graphics card, or another nvidia Geforce 7900 gs to work simultaneously with the current one, with one screen on each (is it crossfire that does this?)
Finally, I want it to look pretty, i do want lights in it, but should i go for air-cooled or water-cooled? and would light up fans be the only option for lit up fans, or would just normal fans with LED strips behind work? also is there such a thing as an LED controller that reacts to sound? would be cool if the whol... You only need one graphics card to run two monitors. Your problem now is most likely due to limited RAM resources - not graphics horsepower. But still, if me, and I were building a new computer, I would get a new graphics card - just one with two digital (HDMI or DVI) outputs.

Windows 7 64-bit is the way to go these days and the sweetspot for Win7 64-bit is 8Gb of RAM (with a dual-channel memory architecture motherboard - 6Gb for triple channel).

Understand fancy lights do absolutely nothing for performance, consume some power, generate some heat, and do absolutely nothing for performance - worth repeating. A case needs to sit quietly and discreetly off to the side and not draw attention to itself. After all, what's on the monitor(s) is what's important so that's where my attention goes. So my advice is don't waste your money on things that do absolutely nothing for performance or well-being of your computer. Instead, use that money towards a better graphics solution or more RAM. That will serve... Read more

Hi there. I recently have had hard drive failure, and I am in need of an upgrade.
However, I'm not sure what I should get...

I have been referred to this site:
Best High-End Gaming PC | Hardware Revolution
Best Mainstream Gaming PC | Hardware Revolution

I think I have narrowed it down in my amateur opinion to:
Amazon.com: Samsung Desktop Class Spinpoint F3 1 TB SATA 3.0 Gb-s 32 MB Cache 3.5-Inch Internal Bare-OEM Drives, HD103SJ: Electronics
or
Amazon.com: Western Digital 1 TB WD Blue SATA III 7200 RPM 64 MB Cache Bulk/OEM Desktop Hard Drive: Computers & Accessories

According to that website, the Spinpoint is very reliable, and the SATA 6.0 is mostly useless. I've read elsewhere that a 32mb cache vs. a 64mb cache will not make a difference either. Secondly, I have heard that WD has horrible support, and that is exactly what I'm switching from. Also, I really only need 500GB, but the 1TB is about the same price, or cheaper. SSD is too expensive for me right now, and I'd like to keep it less that 100$.

Is there another hard drive I should be looking at?
If not, which one should I get?

Answer:Need new Hard Drive, choices, choices...

I recently bought this one Newegg.com - Seagate Constellation ES ST500NM0011 500GB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Enterprise Internal Hard Drive -Bare Drive It is one of the few remaining HDDs with a 5 year warranty and enterprize class is designed to run 24/7. I've had no problems with it.

Just a thought, I've had 2 HDD failures in my PC experience of about 18 years, both were WD.

My friend owns a spare Lenovo X230 with Intel i5-3210M CPU and I own a Lenovo X220 with Intel i5-2430M CPU. I have a Lenovo X230, running Kubuntu 14.04. When I disconnect the slice battery at the bottom the system resets, it's very annoying. What's worse is that it seems like jostling the system, also can cause it to power cycle. I don't really have a need to remove the slice battery very often, but essentially if I put the laptop into standby, and put it in by laptop knapsack, the system is off after I get where I'm going. Thoughts? I saw somewhere that allegedly, when you unlock the battery, some thinkpad utility gets notified to switch the power, I wonder if the hotplug is a software only solution, and not doable in standby. Steve Ramage

I want to be able to boot my X230 in UEFI only (CSM off). Lenovo media for X230 does not seem to be UEFI bootable, so I boot it with CSM on. The Recovery program asks about the GPT or MBR partitioning with the explanation that with GPT it will be bootable in UEFI only. But when I reboot after recovery and turn CSM off, the "Starting Windows" screen freezes endlessly. There is some hdd activity, but no Windows are loaded.Any clue what went wrong and how to fix it? Thanks.

Answer:X230: win 7 x64 in uefi using lenovo recovery media

You need to enable CSM when ever booting to external devices, so that is normal.     The difference between GPT and MBR is that the newer GPT is more robust, secure and allows more partitions and better error recovery, but both should work.   If you press and hold down the [F8] key, and then turn on the comptuter, do you get the option to boot in to Safe Mode, and if so can you boot in to Safe Mode, or Safe Mode with Networking? I presume that you are recoverying due to a prior problem, so more informaiton on why you were recovering may be helpful. Best of luck

I have a 4 year old Lenovo Thinkpad X230 computer.  Since I upgraded to Windows 10 (two years ago?) my computer has randomly shut off with no warning.  There doesn't seem to be a pattern with regard to when or how this happens.  The computer starts normally every time.  This can happen upwards of 5 or 6 times in an hour (although sometimes it can go several days without shutting off). In the last year (since June 2016), the computer has been evaluated by three different technicians on three different occasions (June, October, January).  Each found no hardware issues, no issues with fuzz/dust, no obvious software issues, no malware or other viruses.  Personally, I have explored the answer on the internet and fiddled with the settings relating to sleep mode (among other suggestions) and nothing seems to have worked.  I recently was advised to revert to the original windows 10, undoing all the updates and additional installations that I've put on the computer.  I did this, and miraculously it helped (although it still shut off twice since then.  This was in February).  In the last two weeks, I was forced to upgrade back to normal and the problem has returned.  Additionally, the first person who looked at my computer (back in June 2016), told me that this was aparently a common problem with Windows 10 and that the only way to fix it was to revert to Windows 8.   I would like to not have to do this, if poss... I just received a new compay issues computer: x230 running Windows Pro 64 bit, Office 2010 and an SSD.  Unfortunately, out of the box the pointing devices, either the ultranav or an external mouse and keyboard (MSFT Sculpt), suffer from auto clicking and inability to input text...the text writes over itself...cursor moves forward and then backspaces on itself. The external keyboard worked fine when tested on other notebooks at home.  I did unistall the MSFt keyboard SW on the x230 to see if that made a difference.  Nope.  My IT team remotely updated all drivers, etc. So, everthing system-wise is up to date.  They seemed to have fixed it for about an hour, then it went back to this behavior, including opening multiple instances of applications on its own. The PC is unusable. Thoughts? Halfcalf18

The touchpad is defective. If you have an external mouse, try to disable it (either in BIOS or OS) while you get a replacement.

Description of problem: at some point when playing audio, sound will cut out. The levels will still be moving on the mixer, but no sound will come through the speakers or sound jack. It seems that soon after I've closed all sound-producing applications, sound returns. I am 50-75% sure that this is strictly a sound jack issue, as I don't remember being able to reproduce the issue without the sound jack being active when the audio drops out. Frequently, bumping my headphones' cord seems to cause the problem, but other times, the problem seems to happen on a click, a loud sound, or seemingly nothing at all.

I am unsure of how to reliably reproduce the problem, so it is difficult to diagnose whether or not the problem can be reproduced when the sound jack is not active. This isn't common use for me...

Origin: Appeared mid-October, around the same time I had upgraded to the newest drivers (where the old ones were from earlier than May 2013). All were downloaded through the Lenovo website and/or Lenovo's System Update utility, with the exception of the Intel graphics drivers, which were downloaded through the Intel website. At this point, I was running Windows 8, not Windows 8.1. I installed Windows 8.1 recently, and the problem remains.

What I've tried: disabling drivers, reinstalling drivers, disabling sound effects, disabling audio application overrides...

What I haven't tried: rolling back drivers (being honest, I have a bit of trouble believing that this is strictly ... Read more

Hi all,Apologies if I've missed this elsewhere - new to the forums so still learning to navigate. As background, machine type listed below:X230 Laptop (ThinkPad) - Machine Type 2325, Model BA6As I see it I'm having two separate issues here but they may well be linked: Recent Windows 10 updates are making the taskbar fully ineffective - I note this is fairly common and have tried the powershell route to check updates to no avail; curious to know what the advice here generally is, if X230 is no good with Windows 10 or is there something specific I should be doing to rectify this. This weekend, my laptop has developed a habit whereby the sound and video playback stops working suddenly. On boot-up it's fine but after a while, I can't listen to music or watch videos at all. Bit alarmed about this but suspect it may be linked to the thunderstorm on Thursday (based in London...), given I woke up to realise the powerboard on my TV had also gone. My laptop is within warranty so hopefully if it's hardware related, I would hope this is covered - in truth, I was reassured about the Lenovo warranty but have never had cause to use it at home or work over the last 6 years of using Lenovos.Any help or guidance would be massively appreciated!Kind regards,Bal

I called Lenovo and got my Windows 8 recovery disc shipped out free of charge ten minutes later. I have a case number to prove it! This is so awesome.I didn't say anything except that I didn't know why windows won't start, I didn't know why recovery wont start, and I needed my discs so that I could get things working again. That's the last time I let my mischievious daughter play with my laptop before I get it all set up. The guy on the phone thought that was pretty funny... Thank you, Lenovo! You guys are so very helpful!
