Unable to connect to internet on Thinkpad x220

Question: Unable to connect to internet on Thinkpad x220

I had purchased a new X220 thinkpad with i5 processor which runs with Windows-7 Professional 32 bit, last week. The problem is that I am unable to connect to the internet through Dial-up with wireless USB modem. The modem is installed very well, but when the web page is being opened, it was throwing an error as "It has hung up dialup connection" and immediately the connection fails and it gets disconnected. The modem is very well compatible with the Windows-7 32-bit as per the internet service providers and when I reported the error, they notified me the connection is being blocked/hung. I tried with different service providers, the problem is same with all. Please do help me in resolving if any one had any idea. Thanks,DT

Preferred Solution: Unable to connect to internet on Thinkpad x220

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Unable to connect to internet on Thinkpad x220

Please, refine, since the is a ambiguity in your post - do you want to gain access to 3g network via dial-up connection instead of broadband network adapter connection? If "yes", why so?

I own a Lenovo Thinkpad X220, and recently I had this problem when I acess 'Mouse' in Control Panel, and it comes up with an error saying 'Unable to connect to the Synaptics Pointing Device Driver' I press OK, then it goes to the Mouse Properties. Another thing about this error is that when I change settings in the Ultranav tab, I press Apply and OK, but it does not save my edited settings. I have reinstalled the Ultranav Driver a lot of times, and it still comes up with this errorI made sure that I have installed the latest Ultranav Driver, which was released on the 20th June 2013, and also the Ultranav Utility.  Any ideas?

Answer:Unable to connect to the Synaptics Pointing Device Driver Thinkpad X220

Hi, poonl1

I would recommend trying to use the standard Synaptics driver found here. Synaptics is the company that develops the UltraNav software, so there should be no loss of compatibility/features. I have witnessed several cases where this driver has helped others with mouse issues, so it may help yours as well.

The first thing you will need to do is to remove the UltraNav driver from the system. To do this, open the Start menu and type Device Manager into the Search box, and then press Enter. Once here, double click on Mouse and other pointing devices, and then right-click on the UltraNav device. Navigate to the Driver tab and select Uninstall... from the bottom of the window. Follow the prompts to uninstall and then restart when prompted by Windows. Windows should install a generic driver that will allow you to use the TouchPad when downloading the Synaptics driver.

Adam

Hello everyone,I own a Lenovo Thinkpad X220, and yesterday I tried to present something on the projector at school through the display adapter (not the VGA), and when I plugged it in my laptop suddenly turned off. I realized my display port was damaged, which was something I was unaware of. I unplugged the port and I tried turning it back on but the power button won't even light up, and I tried multiple methods such as the power button trick, removing the battery and running AC power only, removing my extra RAM card and other methods, but it won't turn on. However, my battery still charges as usual when I plug it in with my AC adapter. What is the problem and how can I fix it? Please help! Thanks.

Problem:Hi I am using an x220 notebook. I have been trying to connect it to the external LCD screen through the display port but something is going wrong. Most of the times I get multicolored squiggly lines on the LCD screen and the display in the notebook disappears. Sometimes I can see the display on the LCD for a spilt second before it disappears. My Attempts:The connecting cords are fine as I have tested them using another Thinkcentre notebook(Even in this notebook the LCD display only worked when the screen resolution was 1024*720 or lower. For higher resolution I kept getting Invalid Format message on the LCD).  I have tried to update all drivers but the issue still persists. I don't think its a hardware issue as do see something on the LCD. My guess is its something to do with the driver. I have an important presentation coming up. Can someone please help me resolve this issue? Thanks,Sanket

Sound problem of ThinkPad X220. Audio CD is no problem, and sound comes from speaker. Headphone is also working when pluged into 3.5mm jack. But no sound from Internet Video such as ABC news or YouTube. Recently, I have installed Cisco TeleConference software, and I have uninstalled that software, but the conditions have not changed. I've got brand new X220 with i5, and 6-cell battery. The problem is that the internett speed is ok the first 10-15 min,  but after 10-20 min download speed seems unstable and slow. Does load constant if i stream or go to a page.  I have tried several method in order to fix my internet problem. Without luck I have tried:Updating the driver, updating the BIOS, tried to change channel in modem, i tried to set AUTO under wireless settings, i have tried to have the charger in and whitout, I have tried with wireless-usb-card, One interesting fact, when i sit very close to the modem, the speed becomes good and stable. The speed is also good on different network.  Also with Cabel it seemed good. Hello, I have been using IBM thinkpad laptop for last 3.5 yrs without any major issues and Iam happy for that.Last 1 year I have using broadband internet wherein my laptop is connected to modem directly by cable instead of a router. It was working perfectly fine. Recently I moved location and in my new location we have broadband connection.Inview of multiple users we have setup NETGEAR router. But for some strange reason my laptop is not able to connect to wireless network. Two of my friends having HP & Dell laptop does not seem to have the issue.I have checked the authenticaltion mechanism but no success. I then restored my system back to a backup taken in 2008. Now my laptop is as good a new laptop, still it is not able to connect to wireless network.  So Iam stuck unable to understand if it is my laptop or router problem. I would be very happy if anybody can throw a light on the problem Iam facing.I tried calling IBM thinkpad support center, but they seem to work only on weekdays in India. Thanks,Deepesh

Just got off the phone with Verizon. They had me push the reset button and I was able to connect to the internet again. I mentioned how slow it takes for pages to load. She said if I have two firewalls running that can happen, then eventually it blocks your internet connection. I have the free Avira and am only using the Windows Firewall. She said the Verizon router has a firewall but it's a low security. So I went on the internet was able to get on some sites, but then others wouldn't connect again, said there is no internet connection. All the lights on the router are on. So far it's still working, but this is what happened before when I lost my connection completely.

I have Windows XP, tried it both on IE 8 and Firefox. The router is an Actiontec MI42WR. The problem was with both my desktop and laptop wired connections.

Hello guys,

I have just finished my very first computer build and am rather happy with most things.

Unfortunately I am having problems connecting to the internet.

I have a temporary dongle in place and because it's my only option for about a month I kinda need it to work.

When I first connected it I found my connection and I successfully connected, I downloaded Google Chrome and Steam, then unfortunately it randomly stopped working.

Where the strength bar should of been, there was a large red cross, when I found my connection it read "The settings saved on this computer for the network do not match the requirements of the network." I Googled this and people said delete your connection and reconnect, that didn't work, so then I tried to set my security type to something different or off as recommended in a solved post, the problem persisted.

Now after restarting my computer several times it sometimes rejects my password, or comes up with the "the settings for the network..." and on rare occasions it connects then 5 minutes later comes up wit my original problem.

I have tried resetting my connection details as what is saved on my laptop and mac and they don't work either.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Regards, Lee.

Dear all, would like to inquire if X220 will operate with two external monitor? I'm ok to close the lid of my X220.The 4337 docks support VGA and DVI, will both work together? What's working:- I have been using x220 screen with another external monitor through VGA connection.- Connecting Dell 2340L direct to VGA works with X220 screen, not with 2 external monitor. What's not working:- Recently got a Dell 2340L which contains only VGA and HDMI, which I thought HDMI would work with an adaptor (HDMI to DVI) port - no response although the Windows 7 detects external monitor display.

Hello,The laptop in question will not charge with the above mentioned dock when it previously did. If you shut down the mahcine and turn it back on when docked it works, but after this point if undocked and docked again it seems to lose it's ability to charge via the dock giving the "plugged in but not charging" message on the power system icon from the taskbar. As it stands the laptop can be charged by the AC port on the back and as mentioned when given a power cycle on the dock. The above issue happens on several docks with different power supplies. The laptop is no longer in warranty and it is possible to get this sent back and repaired (paying for the service) if that is an option. This is greatly inconvenient for the user affected and is causing disruption daily.

Hi. I have a IBM thinkpad t30 with windows xp (with SP2). We just got Verizon FIOS toda installed at my house. My desktop is connected to the wireless router (actiontec MI424WR) by an ethernet cord. I haven't successfully connected to the internet via wireless by secure network on our router. My roommate has.
I have a Belkin Wireless Notebook Card (it says "802.11g 2.4 Ghz" on the card, and its model F5D7010). I haven't had any trouble connecting using this card (it goes into a PCMIA slot on the leftside of the laptop) at places like panera or the wirless at my dad's house.
When I try to connect to the secure wireless network,
a dialog box will pop up saying "Please wait wile Windows connects to "XXXXX" network" with a little green bar moving from left to right as its working saying "Detecting network type..." then the computer freezes, I can't reboot it via ctrl-alt-delete or move the cursor. So I have to hold down the power button to manually turn it off.
Already had the verizon tech support people remotely try stuff on my computer with the computer hooked up to the router via an ethernet cord. He suggested uninstalling and/or reinstalling the ethernet card. I've done that, same result as above. he also suggested getting a new notebook/network card. Since this thing has worked fine up until now, I'm open to trying anything before I get a new one. Can someone please help?

I have a Lenovo T570 (Type 20JW, 20JX) Laptop (ThinkPad) and ThinkPad Basic Dock (40A00000WW).   I have a monitor plugged into the VGA connection on the docking station.  I have another monitor connected to my laptop with HDMI.  When the laptop is docked, the display will show on the laptop and the monitor connected to the dock.  The monitor connected via HDMI goes black.  When the laptop is off the dock, the HDMI monitor works.  Is there a way to get both monitors to work without having to buy a different docking station?  I know the ideal situation would be to get a different dock with 2 connections on it, but I was hoping not to have to pay for another dock.

Hi there, ThinkPad X240, Windows 8.1 x64 with all the latest Windows Updates and all the updates from Lenovo System Update. I am receiving the following error: "Unable to connect to the Synaptics Pointing Device Driver" when I go into Mouse applet in Control Panel or when I am using Lenovo Settings Metro app. Here is the screenshot of the error: The weird thing about it is that I can click OK and settings for TouchPad and TrackPad are there: However, this error keeps popping up in various places when using Lenovo Settings app, and it is very annoying and makes it very difficult to use. E.g., it pops up 5 times when trying to access Power Management in Lenovo Settings. What I already did: 1. Uninstalled Synaptics drivers from Programs2. Rebooted the machine3. Installed the latest version of UltraNav driver using Lenovo System Update app - it is 18.0.7.57 Any help would be appreciated.

No, that sleeve will not fit the X220.You would want this one, ThinkPad X61/X60 Tablet Sleeve Part number: 41U3142. Here it is again from Amazon, X61 tablet sleeve at amazon. Keep in mind that sleeve will have to be taken off when ever you are using your tablet in Laptop mode.I only use a sleeve when transporting tablet, and it mostly comes down to personal preference.Hope you find something you like.

Hi,

I wonder if anyone can help. We recently installed a new wireless router, and all the other computers in our house can access the internet. But for some reason I can only connect to the network, even though it says there's full connectivity.

I called the customer careline for our internet providers, and they said it was a problem with my computer settings, rather than the router. But they said they couldn't advise me any further unless I paid for it, hence my need to look for advice elsewhere....

Thanks!

Hi, I have been talking to another technician on this site on the networking team but he has referred me here. My IBM thinkpad will not connect to the internet even though it can recognise there is a connection there, it will also not work through a cable. I figured it was a virus or something after downloading from bit torrent so i first removed bit torrent and all the files as well as running my anti virus full scan which did not pick anything up, i was using microsoft security essentials. I then used super anti spyware which picked up 300 tracking spywares which i removed. I then ran malware bytes full scan which picked up 3 high risk malwares. I visited this site well after i did these so cannot remember the names or anything :(. this still did not solve the problem or even make a noticable difference. i then ran all the scans again through safe mode, which picked up nothing more. the system restore will also not work and a recomendation of turning it off has now removed all the system restore points. I then purchased an external hard drive enclosure and ran all the same scans from a friends computer as well as avira, search and destroy, registry blue and cc cleaner which picked up nothing either. I ran the dds program scan which the results were as follows:.

I have a Thinkpad W540 with a Lenovo Ultra Dock Docking Station (40A20170US). Here is the set up I am trying to get to work:Display 1) VGA Planar PL2010M monitorDisplay 2) DVI Planar PL1910M monitorDisplay 3) DisplayPort Lenovo L2251x Wide monitorDisplay 4) LCD monitor (off) When I have selected Standard Mode under the BIOS display settings, I am able to connect two monitors plus the internal LCD at the same time: one on VGA and the other on DVI, or I can connect one on VGA and the other on DisplayPort.  This allows me to have three displays, including the LCD.  My problem is that I am unable to get a third monitor to work as well.  When I connect a monitor via DisplayPort, the monitor on DVI stops working.  After reading forum posts and whatever else I found online, I learned (maybe I'm incorrect?) that I need to switch to Advanced Mode in the BIOS to be able to use three external monitors.   I then uninstalled drivers (the BIOS instructions state that you are supposed to uninstall graphics drivers before switching to Advanced Mode), switched to Advanced Mode in the BIOS, started up the computer, reinstalled the latest drivers, but now the only screen working is my laptop's LCD screen.  None of monitors are detected by Windows no matter what I try. When I switch back to Standard Mode in the BIOS, two of my external monitors begin working again. My docking station firmware is updated FYI.   Any suggestions ... Read more

Answer:Unable to connect to 3 monitors to Ultra Dock (Thinkpad W540) in Advanced Mode BIOS Setting

So I fixed the issue for myself and just wanted to post in case somebody else had the same issue.  I took the following steps to fix the issue:[Background: BIOS is in "Standard" display mode to begin with; I had already updated the docking station's firmware first with a program called fwdphb03.exe and then with Lenovo's update utility.]1) In Windows, I uninstall drivers for the Intel Graphics and K1100 dedicated card.2) Restart, go into BIOS, switch to "Advanced" mode under the Display tab.  I also have the option selected to start up on the docks in the BIOS Display tab.3) Booted into Windows (8.1) and it looked like the Intel Graphics drivers were automatically downloaded. I then ran Lenovo's System Update utility to get the latest video drivers.  Under the optional tab in the Lenovo update utility, I selected the "Optimus" drivers and hit download/install.  It installed, and I had to restart.4) Booted into Windows again, ran Lenovo update utility again, and again it had a video driver to install when I checked for updates.  I installed that, had to restart again.5) Booted into windows, checked screen resolution and saw that no external monitors were showing.6) I then decided to get a driver straight from the source.  Downloaded: the following file from  Nvidia: 334.95-quadro-notebook-win8-win7-64bit-international-whql.exe.  I ran the installation, it did a "Clean" installation with everything checked off. I'm not computer savvy so please keep replies dummied down if at all possible. I used this laptop last on Friday and booted it today and cannot connect to the internet via wifi. No problems whatsoever before this. Checked with other computers and devices in the house and the wireless network and internet are working fine. Checked this laptop and wifi is on (airplane mode off), says its connected to the router (in connections) but icon in tray just scrolls and says "identifying". Using the LAN works fine. Looked at wireless card and it says device is working properly and is fully updated. This computer is running windows 8 which I'm still having trouble navigating through.

Answer:Thinkpad Laptop X4F -Will not connect to internet via wifi

Have you tried turning off the Wifi and then back on? Windows 8 should have that if you press the start key and typing in Wi-Fi. Click on Settings when you search and something for connections should appear. Turn off WiFi then back on to see if that helps.

Hello, Several days ago my Lenovo Thinkpad Twist suddenly stopped connecting to the internet. I was at the cafe using my phone hotspot and everything was fine, but then when I got back home, it could not detect any wireless networks in my house. I thought it may have just been my wi-fi but my phone could connect to the wi-fi just fine. I tried plugging in my phone again for personal hotpot and it could detect my phone, but no longer connect to the internet (it'd say that it's connected, but no pages would load). I tried rebooting my computer, but the wireless networks still could not be found and my phone's hotspot could no longer help it connect to the internet. I tried a Malwarebytes Scan but that didn't detect anything, and my McAfee virus scanner is not gonna help me find anymore viruses (long story as to why I don't have a better virus protection). Can't really install any updates since I can't connect to the internet at all...rebooted several times to no avail... Any sort of help or ideas would be greatly appreciated! Thank you so much! Sincerely,Ingrid

I recently used a free malware removal program to "clean up" my polluted Windows 7 Lenovo Thinkpad E525. Result: I can not connect to Internet either by Ethernet or wireless through my Bell 275 router (DSL).

I think I have to re-configure the network parameters within Windows 7. I am very rusty on the specifics of this job. Can Major Geeks help?

I am communicating to this forum on my iPad and thus I can follow detailed configuration instructions that are sent to me via this forum. I can exercise the Widows machine as required by your instructions.

I hope you can help.

Answer:Windows 7 on Lenovo E525 Thinkpad - connect to Internet

Scroll down until you see the Networking drivers
http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/research/hints-or-tips/detail.page?&DocID=HT073275
Ethernet, you probably need the 2nd driver
Realtek Giga LAN Driver for Windows 7 (32-bit, 64-bit)
Install that, connect a wire and see if it works. Then on the same page again, directly below Wireless LAN click on the link "Can't figure out what is your Wireless LAN adapter? Click here" so you get help figuring out what wireless device is in your E525.

Hello, My daughter has the latop listed and for some reason it decided it no longer wanted to connect to our home network (internet) last night.  I have tried everything I know to fix the problem and what I could find on this site.  Here is what I know: - We have a home network with DSL through a router, however, this computer is connected directly to the DSL modem through a D-Link Ethernet card. - The systems show active, meaning, everything indicates a connection has been made and then when you try to connect IE you get the DNS error screen. - While at the DNS error screen you have an option of having IE diagnoise and fix the problem.  When I try that, it tells me to contact computer manufactor. - When I viewed the log from the diagnoistic, it tells me that this computer has too many  Ethernet or Wireless adapters - which is weird because I did notthink it mattered how many a computer had... - Going to the DOS command prompt, I attempted to reset the IP address and that is when I got the DHCP error.  It will ping, - System Restore did not work. - The onboard Ethernet connection does not work and was disabled about 18 months ago, when I purchased this unit. I do not know how much of the above matters but I wanted to make sure I included as much as possible.  If there are questions I will be more than happy to answer them to the best of my ability. Thank you in advace for any help. Tami

Here's my setup; I'm running my PC to a router, that has a Charter cable internet modem connected to it. Another PC connected to this router is able to access the internet.
I believe the router and cables are in working order, as I have tested them and tried changing my cables with the other PC's.

I am shown as connected to the router (LinkSys), but can't access the internet, or ping any sites. I have no firewall turned on when attempting this.
I have tried Winsock and updating my network drivers to no success. I do believe my PC is the problem though, as everything had been working properly for several weeks before.

Any advice or software/drivers to look for is greatly appreciated.

My laptop is unable to connect to the internet at the moment. I have tried several different connections, and they are all stuck
with a 169.*** IP. But there is nothing wrong with the connections themselves, as they work just fine with another computer. So the problem is with my laptop.

My laptop's OS is Vista, and there is Avira, Comodo Firewall and Windows Defence in it as well. Any help will be much appreciated. Thanks.

Do you mean Windows Defender?
If so, you should be sure Windows Defender is deactivated if you plan to use Avira.

Also, are you positive that you are only using the firewall part of Comodo?

Hi, I have a comp sitting on my workbench that is unable to connect to the Internet via Ethernet.

IPCONFIG appears fine,
DNS: 10.1.1.5
Subnet: 255.255.255.0
PING 10.1.1.5 is ok with no data loss
PING google.com is ok

It is sending and recieving packets in the LAN properties, but nothing is displaying when attempt is made to connect to website - screen stays blank. It will not connect to any address typed into the address bar.

I've replaced the Network adaptor thinking it may be a hard ware problem and I've even tried connecting with Firefox - customer is using IE7.

No luck so far

*edit*
Just tried Google Chrome and received this error message

Code:

Error 2(net::ERR_FAILED):Unknown error.

Answer:Unable to connect to Internet via LAN

Answer:Unable to connect to internet

You will need to find a way to transfer this program to the infected computer from one with Internet access (USB drive, floppy, CD ect..). If this is not possible please let me know and we will try another method to resotre Internet access.

LSPFix- Save it to a permanent folder. Close all windows and run LSPfix. Check "I know what I'm doing" and select all entries related to Newdotnet. Then click >> and remove all entries related to Newdotnet. Click "Finished".

Let me know if this restores Internet access.

Hi, I am having a little bit of a problem with my laptop. I am unable to get on the internet using a wired connection. I can using wireless connection.

This is a connection I have used before, plug in the wire and get surfing. Now though I can only surf using wireless, not using cable.

I have had a similar problem before but at client's offices, where I have never connected to the internet with this laptop before, like trying with my wired connection this morning, I would get connected bu the connection would say 'LOcal Only'

Is there some central control on my VISTA machine that will stop certain types or ways of connecting to the internet?

Answer:unable to connect to internet

Please supply the following info, exact make and models of the equipment please.

Name of your ISP (Internet Service Provider).
Make and exact model of the broadband modem.
Make and exact model and hardware version of the router (if a separate unit).
Model numbers can usually be obtained from the label on the device.
Connection type, wired or wireless.
If wireless, encryption used, (none, WEP, WPA, or WPA2)
Version and patch level of Windows on all affected machines, i.e. XP-Home (or XP-Pro), SP1-SP2, Vista, etc.
The Internet Browser in use, IE, Firefox, Opera, etc.

Please give an exact description of your problem symptoms, including the exact text of any error messages.

If you're using a wireless connection, have you tried a direct connection with a cable to see if that changes the symptoms?
For wireless issues, have you disabled all encryption on the router to see if you can connect that way?
Have you connected directly to the broadband modem to see if this is a router or modem/ISP issue?
If there are other computers on the same network, are they experiencing the same issue, or do they function normally?

On any affected computer, I'd also like to see this:

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD (COMMAND for W98/WME) to open a command prompt:

Type the following commands:

PING 206.190.60.37

PING yahoo.com

NBTSTAT -n

IPCONFIG /ALL

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.

I have set the Win98 computer to obtain the IP automatically and then manually inserted the DNS info. STILL unable to access the internet and yet CAN ping with an IP address either way. Both my IBook and my WinXP computer access the internet without a problem. HELP!!!!! Apparently looks don't get you EVERYWHERE.....

One of the reasons I bought a T420 was because they are supposed to be rugged. There's even the video of water being poured on the keyboard and the system still working.Well yesterday for the first time ever, water got spilled on my keyboard and now I cannot connect to the internet. It wasn't a lot maybe just a third to a half cup of tap water. Neither the wireless nor Ethernet cable are working. The system can detect my local wifi network but fails to connect to it. It will prompt for my password and then fail to connect. I know that my network is fine because all my other devices connect normally. Things I have done:A. I uninstalled the network adapter drivers and let them reinstall on boot.B. I took the keyboard out to examine for water damage. Only the the lower right palm rest bezel was slightly wet. I also noticed condensate near the touchpad area. No other area seemed to have water.C. I dried out my laptop in my oven. Kept at off it provides a dry 85F environment. What else can I do? Is the internal network adapter damaged? Would a USB network adapter fix my issues?

Answer:Unable to connect to internet

Lots of ways we can go here, but first let's run HWinfo and see if it recognizes your wifi card.

I did just as you requested and the box was not checked so I did so and applied it, but still the same result. I tried running the network diagnostics on it also and it says "Windows cannot connect to the internet using HTTP, HTTPS, or FTP. This is probably caused by firewall settings on this computer. Check the firewall settings for the HTTP port (80), HTTPS port (443) and the FTP port (21)." I don't know what all that means, but I do have windows firewall turned off as I use the free version of Zonealarm and the setting for it's firewall seems pretty simple and I don't see where any adjustment on it should be needed. I know this probably has nothing to do with this issue, but I ran Hijackthis if this might help in any way.Logfile of Trend Micro HijackThis v2.0.4Scan saved at 7:19:38 AM, on 7/1/2010Platform: Windows XP SP3 (WinNT 5.01.2600)MSIE: Internet Explorer v8.00 (8.00.6001.18702)Boot mode: NormalRunning processes:C:\WINDOWS\System32\smss.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\services.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\lsass.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\Ati2evxx.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exeC:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exeC:\WINDOWS\Explorer.EXEC:\WINDOWS\system32\ZoneLabs\vsmon.exeC:\Program Files\CheckPoint\ZAForceField\IswSvc.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\spoolsv.exeC:\WINDOWS... Answer:Unable to Connect to Internet

This is the orginal message I posted and since I haven't had any replies to this one that was moved I thought it might help to repost it.This seems like a simple one but for the life of me I can't figure out why it would connect. I had some kind of bug that would redirect my google searches and it also wouldn't let me update any software including mcafee, spybot, etc and I have a network between my desktop and my laptop, so I could share directories from my desktop and that too wasn't working. I saw on my laptop where the DNS should be obtained automatically, so I changed that setting and it then began letting me do updates and surf the net without being redirected (after cleaning the virus off). Upon rebooting it wouldn't let me connect to the internet. It keeping trying to acquire network address, but never did. I tried reloading the software that came with the linksys router with no luck. I tried reinstalling drivers for my intel network card, didn't work, uninstalled it completely and reinstalled the latest and it doesn't work, but was does work is the shared folders now.....so what gives, it lets me see the home network but it doesn't let me see the web.....my laptop hasn't had trouble getting the net the entire time. Any tips would be greatly appreciated.===========

or download firefox

or
standalone installer for chrome

The OS of my laptop is Windows Vista Business 32-bit. In my home I access internet through wireless Linksys Access Point. My laptop is configured under "Alternate Configuration" to connect to the AP through static IP address. Since the last few days the internet is not getting connected and I get the following message -
"The following policy might need to be adjusted to allow Windows to connect:
Policy Provider: Windows Firewall
Filter Name: Query User
If the policy provider is Windows Firewall, click for information about adjusting Windows Firewall settings. If a different policy provider has been identified, check the provider?s documentation on how to adjust the policy settings."
In addition to Windows Firewall there is Outpost Firewall also installed on my laptop. I have tried a lot to change the settings under LAN but without any success.
More interestingly, when the TCP/IP setting of the adaptor is set under "General" tab instead of "Alternate Configuration" the internet gets immediately connected to the laptop. As I also sometimes connect through wireless router for which it is required to set the TCP/IP of the laptop to "Obtain an IP address automatically" I need to set the access point throgh "Alternate Configuration" only.
Please help to resolve my crisis. Thanks.

What firewall or security suite is, or ever was, on the system?

Open a (black) Command Prompt window:
Hold the Windows logo key and press r; in the Run box type cmd and click on OK.

Type the following command:

IPCONFIG /ALL

[Note that there is no space between the slash and ALL.]

[Press ENTER after the command.]

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

If necessary use a text file and removable media to copy the results to a computer with internet access.

That error you get is from NewDotNet Domains = spyware. It hijacks your winsock. If you remove it with something like Ad-aware or other spyware removal tool, it will screw your winsock up = no internet. Go to http://www.snapfiles.com/get/winsockxpfix.html and try that.

I recently got infected with spyware and a ton of pop-ups. I downloaded Adware but removed it. Upon removing it, I think it must have uninstalled key winsock settings to get me on the internet. There is nothing wrong with my modem. My network diagnostic test says: Internet Explorer Web Proxy: localhost: failed.

I then went to Start > Run> NOTEPAD c:\Windows\system32\drivers\etc\HOSTS

The Notepad output was:
127.0.0.1 localhost
: :1 localhost
91.212.65.122 antiwareprotect.com
91.212.65.122 www.antiwareprotect.com

How can I get connected to the internet? Do I need to get rid of the spyware virus first? I don't know how to do that if I can't connect to the internet.

Thank you

I've had a Vista PC for a while (since about 08), and the other day it stopped being able to connect to the internet. After checking the router settings, the router doesn't even acknowledge that the computer is connected to it, even though the ethernet cable is definitely working.

I suspect it's a problem with the computer's IP address. After opening command prompt and attempting to do the command ipconfig /renew, the only thing it does is give me a line that says "An error occurred while renewing interface Local Area Connection : The RPC server is unavailable".

Of course, it's simply a hunch that it's an IP problem, and if it is, I have no idea what could be causing it. My computer restarted on its own and displayed a message right before all this started, but I didn't get a chance to see what the message said. Other than that, I have no idea what's going on.

This sound a lot like the problem I am having. We recently got a new computer, which means now we have three connected to the internet. Two work fine: the oldest one and the newest one. But the former "new" computer now cannot access the internet. One time it worked, after we removed a disk from the drive, reset the modem, and rebooted, but since then it hasn't been working. The disk probably wasn't the problem, seeing as there is no disk in the drive, but it seems like there should be a long term way to fix this so we wouldn't have to reset the modem every time we turn the computer on. I've run the windows diagnostics, and every time I get an error saying that the computer can't renew the IP adress. I've checked the logs and it says that the repair has gone fine up until the point when it tries to renew the IP adress. It then says "the RPC server is unavailable." I've tried going and manually starting, but when I found the RPC server it wouldn't let me start, stop, pause, or modify it in any way.
As for the brands and model numbers, I'm not exactly sure where I would find those, but on the front of the computer tower it says "dimension E510". It's a dell computer. On one side of the modem/box thing it says zwire, so I think it's safe to assume that is the brand.the computer is connected directly to that. We have at&t, and the other two computers connect to the internet just fine. one of ... Read more

I have several computers online with both ethernet and wireless adapters. My main computer can't connect to the Internet today. I had it hooked via a cable to the router, took that off and hooked up the wireless USB adapter and still no luck. The Netgear info says it is hooked up and there is a signal, but I can't get email or anything in my browser.

I have rebooted several times. This happens whether or not I have it hooked via the Ethernet cable or wireless. My other computers (I have both Ethernet and wireless) are able to connect and I can view pages in my browser.

Any ideas where to start? What a way to start off a Monday.

Nancy

Hello,Recently reformatted computer and installed wireless USB dongle to connect to BT internet Home Hub. When trying to connectto the internet, the info displayed confirmed a good signal strength / BT hub connected (checked by connecting another computer to hub)and confirmed by entering the IP of the home hub into browser, but whilst it was sending packets it was not receiving. Tried opening IE / Google but nothing opening. After many attempts to connect it did eventually connect (somehow?) and I loaded Windows Updates (Custom option selected). After restarting computer, this connecting problem has returned and I am unable to connect. Tried clicking 'Repair' but doesn't work ('unable to renew IP') Do you have any ideas on what the problem might be. Things to check etc? Thanks Dan

I have 3 computers, 2 laptops, 1 desktop & run off a wireless netgear router. Both laptops connect to the internet with no problem but my desktop/Wdw XP is showing a strong internet signal via both the wireless icon & computer icon. BUT, every time I attempt to connect to the internet, I get the screen of death "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage"

I did a cmd>ipconfig/release then same except ipconfig/renew.

When I run the ipconfig/all I get the following:

So....not sure what to do. I began to have problems on 3/31 when I did a Microsoft update because of the confickr scare, ran COMODO & had the registeries cleaned up.

But, I'm stuck...all the above I obtained via this forum & older posts.

I'm currently troubleshooting an HP DV6409WM for no internet connectivity. About a week ago the physical slider for the wireless networking card started only displaying the amber light. Usually, when enabled a blue light will appear and when disabled an amber. When I looked in the device manager there is only one networking device listed, NVIDIA nForce Networking Controller (This is for the ethernet port). In a similar computer (dv6607nr) it lists two one being a Broadcom Wireless Adapter and the Nvidia. I concluded we're missing the drivers to run the wireless card, (I downloaded the drivers from HP and installed them without success)I connected the computer to the cable modem, it immediately updated and the drivers worked and everything was good for 24 hours. The next day she came back. This time neither the Broadcom or the nvidia worked. Unable to connect via either port. We connected via teather connection using an HTC Hero, it worked to connect to the internet. Still the regular use ports would not work. The next time we tried to use the cell phone for internet it would not work. I tried an Alltel broadband adapter. Also tried to use a bluetooth adapter to connect via another phone. I have bought two different external network adapters (Belkin and a netgear) neither of which would install. I have reformatted the computer using an HP Vista factory disk. Problem still persists. After reformatting I plugged into the modem again and I only have local connectivi... Read more

A friend of mine has asked me to look at his ancient Dell desktop that is running XP home as it has stopped accessing the internet completely. I booted into Safe Mode and managed to use IE to connect ok there, which made me think that it might be a virus. From Safe Mode, I installed Malwarebytes, updated it, and ran a full scan from safe mode where is found a number of tracking cookies, but also some trojans which I removed. I then ran a full systm scan of his Norton virus checker which did not find anything. I booted into normal mode only to find the problem still existed.

I've dropped into the command line and issued Ping to www.bbc.co.uk which works fine. ipconfig shows the ethernet adapter only with a valid ip address, subnet mask and default gateway. I've not used XP in a long time, but I was kind of expecting to see a little more there.

DDS log and GMER log follow.

Answer:Unable to connect to internet

Hi,

I believe the problem is Norton Internet Security here since you don't have this problem in Windows safe mode.
Please uninstall Norton Internet Security from Software > add & remove programs. Reboot afterwards.
Let me know if that solved your issue.
If that solved the problem, I suggest you install another Antivirus/Firewall. See in my signature below for the ones I recommend.

Extra note, I see your sunjava is way outdated. I strongly suggest you update asap: http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp

You will have a reset button on your router. A very small pin hole usually at the back. I use the head of a large needle, hold this in for a few seconds. Worth a try.

Im having trouble connecting to the internet on PC. When I try to start up Firefox (or any other internet accessing program on my computer) I get a message saying the server cannot be found, etc etc. I have tried restarting my computer, re-connecting the connection, repairing the connecting. All my firewalls are turned off, I even removed one of them. This has happened before but normally I can clean spyware off and it runs just fine. I've already run everything on my computer to clean of spyware, virus's, vundo, and a bunch of other things that I got from the security portion of this site. I've also checked back a few pages of posts and done searches, but it is to no avail.

If any one has any ideas as to what could be the problem, Im willing to try almost anything. oh, and im connecting to the internet from the same ethernet cord, from the same connection, but its on my mac. Which, imo, rules out the problem being something with either of those.

Answer:Unable to connect to internet

You said "Same ethernet cord, same connection". And what's on the other end of that ethernet cord? How do you connect to your ISP?

You connected directly from computer to (cable or dsl) modem? If you have a router or something in between remove it. And, btw, are you using a cable or dsl provider. Have you called them as well see if it's their problem?
Have you power cycled the modem?
Is the NIC on your mac configured to match the parameters required by your ISP? e.g. DHCP
Is an IP address getting assigned to the computer? or are there connection problems even before that step is completed?

I had sought assistance with this problem 4 days ago but got no reply so I'm trying once again. I'm writing this on behalf of a friend. She has a pc that works on the OS XP Home. She used it last Saturday to fill in an application on line. She tried to go on line again yesterday and it wouldn't connect to the internet. A dialogue box appeared stating: Buffer Overrun: a buffer overrun has been detected which has corrupted the programs internal state. The program cannot safely continue
Any suggestions on how to solve it? Thanks in advance.

My son brought his Dell home from college for the Christmas break. He was able to connect to the internet here this summer and he was able to connect to the school network yesterday before he left school. But he is unable to connect to the internet here at home. We've run Hijack this...no problems. We've run winsock fix...still no luck. We're not sure what, if anything, the network at school has put on his computer that now prevents him from connecting here.

Two other computers in the house connect through his modem/router via wireless and have no problems.

Any suggests would be greatly appreciated!

I had a virus in my laptop yesterday. I think I have removed it but now I am unable to access the internet. I have a wireless connection and have connected using two other laptops. I did reset the router just in case but no luck.

I am not an expert so I looked up information and found that I should try to ping web sites which was successful, run command ipconfig/reset which gives me an error - media disconnected. All indications when I check my connections on the laptop is that I am connected but still no internet. I disabled virus software, tried to manually enter the IP address, subnet, and gateway... nothing has worked. It would probably help if I knew what any of that meant, but I just followed directions. Anyone have any good ideas?

Thanks for your help

I have a problem connecting to the internet that I'm fairly certain comes from a virus that has set up a proxy network disallowing antivirus, gaming, updates etc. I actually have the exact same problem as the user "rewired" who posted this message a few days ago
"When installing Starcraft 2 it comes up with this message on the installer:

Unable To Connect
The Starcraft II installer requires an online connection in order to install, and cannot currently connect to the internet to authenticate. Please check your firewall settings and ensure that your computer is properly connected to the internet, then restart the installer.

I went to the support page and fixed some ports that it said to change, and did so. It comes up with the same message, and I am wondering if this has to do with the same thing that the other thing did. Because this usually never happened before I got that virus.

I use Firefox.

Is there some thing I could by using a program fixer here?: http://www.dougknox.com/xp/file_assoc.htm"

The only difference is that I use vista. The moderator dvk01 helped him solve his problem perfectly, but since I am new to this site I am unable to PM him and request his help, I wonder if someone else could notify him of my problem so he could help me out.
Thanks a lot

I just upgraded to windows 7 32bit from vista on my Toshiba satellite a210 and now I cant get my LAN to work, my wifi is working but I don't have a wireless router and strangely my wifi works with the switch in the off position. Can any one help me with this I'm loosing my mind trying to fix the problem.

Answer:unable to connect to internet using lan

Need more info. When you say your LAN is not working what specifically is not working? If its your NIC check device manager and see what shows. You may have to go to the Toshiba site and download a driver to get it working. If your NIC is working but you can't get a connection that is a different matter. Just need more info to sort it out.

Hello,

I am using an HP Pavilion dv7-2110sa laptop and I cannot connect to the internet. ( I am using a Netopia Model 2247-62 ADSL 2+ Router) .

When I first bought the laptop, Windows Vista Home Premium was installed, the internet was working perfectly, I just plugged the cable and it was working. I decided to get rid of the pre-installed software from it by reinstalling Windows...

Now the laptop is running Windows Vista Ultimate and I cannot connect to the internet anymore. I do not know what to do, I do not want to try and fix it myself by downloading any drivers.

Thank you.

Answer:Unable to connect to internet

hello
have you tried to set up a connection?

start > connect to > if your using wireless your router should be listed there.
if not wireless. choose the "set up a connection or network" link near the bottom of the page.
what browser are you using? ie7 or ie8

On my laptop the Wireless Network Card can pick up my router but seems not to be connecting to the internet, I try to put in "bthomehub" to get to my Router CP but that doesn't work either. Do you have a WPA password for the wireless router? If so, you will need to type that in to access the wireless connection. If need be, reset the password in the Router setup.

All this seems to have started when I installed my old router as a switch, so I could run a music server. It seems that Windows thinks that this old router is the main connection point to the world, and of course cannot connect. I need to know where I can change the network settings to get windows to use the main router. My other problem is my laptop, which can connect to the main router fine by wireless, but cannot get further. I checked the route, and it seems to go from the main router to the switch, then stop. Any help on these issues would be appreciated, thanks.

Answer:Unable to connect to internet with Win 7/XP

Update: Solution was simple, the router/switch was conflicting with the main router and causing connection problems. So I took it off the network and moved the server downstairs, and connected it directly to the router. Why didn't I think of that two days ago? :P

I have a cell phone modem connected to a router which covers my two computers. Today I'm unable to connect thru the router, but I can plug the modem directly in to the computer and it works fine. Does this mean the router is history? I hate to replace it if I don't have to.

Answer:Unable to connect to internet

Need more info on the "cell phone" modem & the router.

This is my first time posting here so I'm not sure if this is the right section, but here it goes.

I used SDFix to get rid of a Trojan (Smitfraud to be specific), and now I can't connect to the internet at all. It's stuck at trying to renew the IP address.

Any help would be much appreciated.

For some reason I am unable to connect to the internet using my desktop. When I check my network connections, the icon shows that I am connected; but when I open IE, I am unable to access any websites. My network card appears to be working, at least the lights at the back are flashing! I have reinstalled Windows and still no luck!

I know there isn't an issue with the Internet connection itself as I can connect using my laptop. My ISP has also been unable to help!

OK I have tried everthing I know and can not get it fixed, am I making matters worse.

Problem started with me being unable to log into ANY secured site, whether email, banking or servers. PC Cillan scan uncoveres 5 viruses, two BKDR and three TDSS.dll with various names. Quarantined them and then deleted them. Ran spybot, found simular files, cleaned and deleted. Lost ALL internet connection. Wireless radio shows GOOD signal, and indicates I am connected to the internet, but when I bring up Internet Explorer, it defauls to "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage" Diagnosics on IE show no problems.

Each time I run virus scan it finds anywhere from 3 to 5 BKDR and TDSS.dll files, each time they are named something different. Shows them to be located in Windows/System32/TDSS file, but that file does not exist anywhere.

Here is the Hijack this log, any help or suggestions would be a life saver:

I recently acquired the av.exe virus on my Vista Home Premium laptop. I have run a few different scans & was able to clear up the problem to the point where it is no longer preventing certain programs from running. That said, I still unable to establish an Internet connection through either a LAN line or from my aircard. Below are logs from Malwarebytes, rkill, & hijackthis. I would appreciate any feedback on how to fix the problem. I think that my PC has been infected as 2 days ago both IE7 and Google Chrome stpped connecting to the internet apart from when I go to the site fastmail.fm.
Luckily I also had firefox installed and am able to use this now but even though I removed and reintalled IE7 and tried IE8 it still will not connect to the internet. I have also noticed that itunes will also no longer connect.
Just before I lost connection a new site popped up inviting me to buy a safe web surfing tool so I shut everything down and restarted and that is when the problems started.

I have run Stpzilla and have Avast installed but neither has shown any problems so I am thinking of using ComboFix, is this a good idea?

Answer:IE7 is unable to connect to the internet

ComboFix is an Anti-Malware tool used by advanced malware technicians specifically trained in its use. Please read this post. Are you able to Ping any addresses. i.e. ping www.yahoo.com

When installing Starcraft 2 it comes up with this message on the installer:

Unable To Connect
The Starcraft II installer requires an online connection in order to install, and cannot currently connect to the internet to authenticate. Please check your firewall settings and ensure that your computer is properly connected to the internet, then restart the installer.

I went to the support page and fixed some ports that it said to change, and did so. It comes up with the same message, and I am wondering if this has to do with the same thing that the other thing did. Because this usually never happened before I got that virus.

I use Firefox.

Is there some thing I could by using a program fixer here?: http://www.dougknox.com/xp/file_assoc.htm
