HELP!!! WIFI PROBLEM ON X220

Question: HELP!!! WIFI PROBLEM ON X220

Hi guys, Previously I posted a thread "How to check & set download/upload speed". So, I just bought a new X220 to replace my old Acer laptop, and at that time I was not familiar with this X220, and I thought I had to change the setting from the Windows Network or the Lenovo Access Point software to get a higher download speed, as my download speed is only ranging around 15-30KB/S. I download using the Firefox browser. That is indeeed very slow as I'm at Singapore right now and I'm sure their speed is much more faster than that. I changed the bandwidth (something Hz) from 20 to 40Hz, but still the same. I even brought back to the store that I purchased this X220. The guy tried to download using their store internet connection and said the download speed is reasonable as their store connection is quite slow. Well, I just think 30KB/S is still unacceptable. So I just thought maybe I haven't found a high-speed wireless internet spot yet, and just now I tried to download some movies at my sister's place (dl speed is still max of 30KB/S) and thought to leave all the downloads alone, and before I left I also download iTunes from the itunes website. To my surprise, the download speed on the iTunes was like 1,5MB/S - 2,1MB/S and the movies speed were also started to increase to 300-400KB/S. And the weird thing is that after iTunes finished download, the movies download speed were also dropped down to 30KB/S. So, I had to repeatedly downloading the itunes again to get a 300-400KB/S for my movies. Well, hopefully someone could solve my WIFI problem. Thanks for any thoughts on this.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi everyone, Just purchased a new x220, with what I think is a great build config. I've used a T42 for the last 4 years or so after having some bad run ins with Powerbooks. Mine came with the Intel Centrino N 1000 wireless card. Had I known better, I would have opted for the 6205. The problem I am having is that whenever I get about 15 feet away from my wireless router, I lose all data transfer. My T42 and my HP Tower (and my iPhone) can connect in the exact same distances with ease and still have plenty of bandwidth. The T42 for example won't stream HD video from netflix, but it will stream SD video. The HP tower being in my room, which is the furthest point away from the router and up a level, gives me a -6x to lower 70's via inSSIDer 2.0. If I travel more than 15 feet or so from a router, I still see the network being within range and the RSSI goes to about -60. The other two computers and my phone still are a breeze browsing the web at this distance, but the x220 just acts strange. Sometimes I will get very slow data transfer, most of the time I'll see that I have a good signal to the network but it has the ! yellow icon indicating that I have no internet access. I tried this at my parent's house today with the exact same results. When I was on the other side of the wall the connection was great. I go down the hall and its gone (but still visible). I have used the recommended settings by everyone for power management, reset everything, installed new dr... Read more

I just bought a x220 4286CTO , it is a good machine but the wifi connection is really annonying .It becomes  very slow after 10 seconds or so after I turn on the wifi connection even the link status shows "300Mbps". The chip set is "intel wifi link 1000" in windows 7 64bit. I do see packet drops in ping command to web sites such as "google.com".I have upgraded to latest version of driver, v14.1.1.3 , but still no luck. I am using WPA2  PSK plus AES, other devices (iphone, ipad, T400 and etc) work well in my house.Any idea ?

Answer:X220 wifi slow problem

hey atlantisnj, uninstall the Access Connection. Try connecting using Windows built-in connection system. Does it work and are you able to maintain a good speed? If it does not, try uninstalling the current wifi driver that you have installed. let windows install its generic drivers and try again.

My X220 can't seem to make a solid connection to wifi. It works for some minutes and then drops right down or to zero, then later returns.  I ran System Update 5 and it recommended updating the WLAN driver to 17.13.11. This I asked it to do, but on rebooting to complete the installation, it didn't seem to have updated. I tried a number of times but System Update couldn't seem to get it to update.  I'm running Win 7 64 bit. Can anyone help? Dev

Good Morning to all of you! I'm searching for some advice for some problem which is troubling me lately. It's really not a big deal but it's bugging me: Every time I boot my x220 it will take 2-3 minutes to connect to my wifi network. I know it's not a big secret that all this lenovo tools installed are slowing down the computer and as a consequence the wifi software will be started with a delay but maybe someone of you knows a way or two to work around this? Maybe I can somehow prioritize the start of the wifi software? I appreciate every advice I can get.

I experience the following problem with a new one week old Lenovo X220 built with Intel Advanced-N 6205: After 3-5 hours it disconnects from a wifi router and would not be able to connect to it until I reboot the router. It happened the first time on Friday, I was connected to our Verizon FIOS router and after 5 hours I lost connection and won't be able to connect for 2 hours trying every possible thing until I rebooted  the router, what I didn't have to do with countless number of other laptops/cell phones. Now X220 loses wifi connection every 3 hours and won't be able to connect until the router is restarted. All other devices in a house work perfectly fine, my roommates probably already hate me for rebooting the router. Router: Actiontec M1424WR (Verizon FIOS) Other devices which were and still are able maintain connections with this router for many hours w/o similar problem:- my old Dell Latitude E6400- my Samsung Captivate cell phoneand bunch of other HP laptops, macbooks etc. What I tried and what did not help:- rebooting X220- turning X20 off/on- installing the latest drivers for Intel 6205 card for the Intel website- installing/uninstalling Intel Wifi tools and Access Connections- restoring from a backup (not a complete factory setting restore)- setting DNS/IPs manually for IPv4 and turning off IPv6 I tried to collect some logging with netsh tracing and it only tells that the driver disconnects during acquisition. Some clue I dis... Hello, I keep losing wifi on a regular basis (several times per day). When this happens, an exclamation mark symbol appears on the wifi indicator in the taskbar.I have not been able to identify a trigger. It happens randomly as far as I can tell.I am sitting within 2 metres of the router. Non of my other devices experience connectivity problems. To reinstate wifi, I right click on the wifi icon in the taskbar and select troubleshoot problems. This always gets wifi working again. A hardware scan in Lenovo solution centre does not flag up any problems.Lenovo system update does not indicate any critical or recomended updates. There are 2 optional updates listed (Intel Rapid Storage AHCI Driver, ThinkVantage Active Protection System). Here are some system and wifi detailsX220Windows 8.1 ProWfif adapter: Intel Centrino Advanced-N 6205Driver Provider: Intel; Date: 23/09/2013; Version 15.10.4.2Router: Apple Airport Extreme I would very much appreciate it if someone could help me identify and fix the issue.

If the Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power setting is checked, try unchecking it.

This post is just as information - i solved the problem, but it might help others in the same situation or might encurage Lenovo to change something (if possible). I was adding/enabling WPA security to my wireless router and therefore should change the settings of the my connection on the X220 (along with other wireless equipment).  That was NOT possible, neither using the Win7 network options, nor the Lenovo 'Access Connection' software. After booting the X220 i could see the different access points (SSID's), but when i tried to access anything Wifi related, the Wifi system just froze and i couldn't do anything. If i started out - after a reboot - trying to change the settings (add WPA and enter pass-phrase) in 'Access Connections' i got an error message like: "The program doesn't have the rights to make these changes", when trying to save the changed settings. The solution was to delete all Wifi profiles in 'Access Connections' and start all over with detecting SSID's, entering pass-phrases and so on, for all connections.  After i did this, the Win7 Wifi functionality works correctly too. I guess that updating the 'Access Connection' software (and/or Win7) at some point 'forgot' to convert the settings to a newer layout or similar error.  But it work perfectly now! Hope this helps someone in the same situation.

Hello Im a new user of a Lenovo Thinkpad x220 laptop I recently bought and I have a question about the Wifi driver for this computer. My x220 has installed the "Intel Centrino Advanced-N 6205" Wifi card running in a "Windows 7 x64 bit" system, and when I go to download the latest updated drivers from "support.lenovo.com" it gives 3 options in the "Networking Wireless LAN" section where I think the correct one for my card is marked in this picture:http://imgur.com/UqLwENow if that is the correct driver for my Wifi card my question is if it is right that the Wifi driver is a 500MB file.... I want to check with more experienced Thinkpad users if that is correct and that is the file I need to download and install.Because if I go to the official Intel website I find the driver for my Wifi card is version 15.1.1 dated 5/3/2012 with a 25MB file which seems a bit more logic for a driver file.So which driver should I download and install? I dont use the autoupdater lenovo driver manager software because I like to personally download and store all my drivers with all my computers, so any hint or clue about this question would be appreciated, because like I said it is probably the first time in my life I see a 500MB driver file, thats humongous to put an adjetive. Thanks for the help.

Answer:Question about x220 Wifi driver

The primary reason this package is so large is that it contains drivers for multiple intel adapters for both 64 and 32 bit OS's for Windows 7, Vista , and XP.  It's sort of an all-in-one package. If you use Access Connections use this package, if not then either this or the driver from the Intel website will work fine.

I have a new X220, with Windows 8 added on to the stock W7.  After lots of time on this forum, I have learned to use the Intel wireless drivers not the Lenovo-distributed ones, and that there are lots of other applications from Lenovo that need to be updated or "adapted" to Win8. But worst of all, a 5-year old X60 has far better wireless performance (connectivity to the access point, and throughput) than my very new X220.  Atheros chipset in the X60 and Intel in the X220. What gives?  Is this the advance of technology?  My X220 suffers from drop-outs and the X60 reliably connects and shows throughput.  I mean like up to 8 Mbps.   Is there a substitute wireless card (mini-pci or whatever) that I can replace the Intel unit?  Any other options other than a 30 meter wire?  --J

My new X220 comes with an Intel Wifi 1000 bgn. The wifi would only work if the computer sits few feet away from the router. It would not be able to connect to the wireless router if I'm sitting one floor above the router, while my other laptops do not have any connectivity trouble.  When it connects, the speed could drop to very low even with "excellent" signal quality as reported by Windows. Any hints?

Make sure your router has the latest firmware for it.  Seen this a lot with router with original firmware.  The router gets updated and most problems disappear.

Hi, It seems there's a lot of complaints around the Wifi adapter thinkpad b/g/n wireless (1x1 bgn). I really want to know how worse it is compared to Intel 6205 (not to mention 6300- it's really a beast, people say). Can somebody let me know whether Lenovo charges this much for a upgrade like this (thinkpad 1x1 to intel 6205), and is it worth? Thank you very much!

when you buy the X220 from US online store the upgrade from 1x1 bgn to 6205 was only around 15 dollars. It is definitely worth the upgrade from the 1x1 to the Intel 6205 (the 6300 not so much). Especially if:1. Your wireless hub doesn't have a powerful antenna.2. Lot of other people are using the same 2.4 ghz bandwidth. 3. And you can live with 150 mpbs (usually around 75 mbps are more common) transfer speed.

Hello, about week or two ago, I maybe finally found solution to wifi connections problems on specific routers in channel N mode (Intel wifi card). I wanted to assure myself, that my method works (atleast for me), so I've been waiting last few days. Now, wifi is still stable and I can rely on it, however it sometimes takes a bit time to connect (does not matter, if I resume from sleep or simply power on). Access Connections works fine as well, no needs to remove it. Step 1: Create system restore point (I can't provide warranty, however in my case on X220 and E130 this method works) Step 2: Download driver for your Intel Wifi card (to prevent You from having none as you uninstall current version). Open this page, select your card, OS and choose file, what's name contains ...Ds... (for example, Wireless_17.1.0_Ds64.exe). These files with such a letters contains only whole driver without any additional applications, and they have worked for me better than the rest. I would like recommend you to download the latest driver version. Reason is simple - I hadn't tried older versions. Furthermore, new versions should fix some security problems. Anyway, if you are not really IT professionals (I admit that I am really not), then choose, like me, the newest version. However, if you want to try older version, don't forget to tell others about your result!  Step 3: Uninstall current Lenovo wireless Wifi driver, Intel PRO/Set and so on. Interesting, I have been battling with this issue on my X220 for more than 6 months now (since i decided to run software update (after long time not updating anything) and this problem started...

I tried uninstalling, reinstalling drivers, cleaning stuff, to no avail. I also tried intel wifi drivers and it didnt make any difference...

But I never stumbled upon this, two separate driver sets, S and DS... Do you happen to know what's so different about these drivers that makes it work?

In any case I just swapped out the Intel 6205 card for a broadcom based one after flashing a modified bios that removes the white list for lenovo approved adapters.

And I've not had any disconnections yet. I'll keep this in mind in case I upgrade to a Wireless AC card in the future, which will likely mean going to an Intel card, unless I find a broadcom based one.

Hi everybody, I ran into some issues with my X220 some weeks back and have been trying to fix them to no avail. As far as I can remember I took some time a few weeks back to install the 1.40 firmware-update and also updated the battery-firmware in the same routine. I'm not sure If it was immediately afterwards (since I'm using a dock with LAN), but the wifi-card (Intel 6205) wasn't recognized by the OS anymore. No entry in the device manager! Here's what I've seen/tried so far:1) What I was firstly able ot see was that the device would sometimes show up after returning from sleep when not in the dock.2) Since I have an Ericson WWAN-card i switched mPCIe places. WWAN-card works in both slots. No recognition of the Wifi-card in both. >> So it doesn't seem to be related to mPCIe or the board.3) My guess was a faulty card, so I tried a newly-bought Intel 7260 Wifi-card in the slot.3.1) The Wifi-card must have been recognized by the BIOS, since the whitelist-fault was presented and I had to remove it to even be able to boot again.3.2) As the warranty wasn't my concern anymore anyways I flashed a whitelist-disabled version of the 1.40 firmware. As promised, I was able to boot with the 7260 card.3.3) Yet still, the card is not presented in the device manager.4) Since my Windows 7-installation had quite some time on its shoulders I reckoned that maybe another OS would be able to properly recognize the card. I've had this problem since new, and have reinstalled windows a number of times for unrelated reasons. When coming out of standby, the mouse is unresponsive for about 5s and it takes more than 20s for wifi to reconnect. Iinitially it tries to connect, then drops, then goes through the whole process again before connecting. I don't have this problem on other model Thinkpads, wifi connects immediately out of standby. Seems like it might be a driver problem. All drivers are up to date.

Answer:X220- mouse and wifi unresponsive out of standby

hey vinuneuro, could you try uninstalling the current wifi driver of your unit. Let windows install its generic drivers and try again.at the same time if you have Access Connection, uninstall and leave it removed. Just test and see if the wifi-issue you have occurs or not

Hi,I have here a X220 Tablet and I want to share with WiFi my internet connection to my mobile device....How I can do tis?

Answer:Sharing WiFi internet access from X220 Tablet

Get the Intel MyWifi tool; it lets you set up an adhoc wireless network while maintaining the connection to the existing wifi hotspot.

So my X220 with the Intel 6205 card is having issues reconnecting to WiFi when resuming from sleep or hibernation. It takes about a minute for it to do so, though occasionally it will reconnect right away. Maybe 1 out of 20. When doing a cold boot or restart, it connects immediately upon the desktop showing up. This was not always the case, in fact when I first got my X220 in June, I have not had this issue.... In fact, I don't know when it started happening, but it was maybe a couple months ago. I just thought it was my old router going bad. Well I got a new router, and it still happens. I have the latest Intel WiFi drivers from Lenovo, and I even tried downgrading to the previous driver from Intel's site. Still the same problem. I tried setting a default profile in access connections, and that does not help. In fact, it behaves the same way if I totally uninstall access connections as well. In fact I tried this on three different brand routers, and I can reproduce it on all of them (Asus, Netgear & TP-Link) so I think this is not a router issue. Other devices in the house reconnect right away with no issues (iPhone 4, PS3, Mac desktop, Dell laptop). I currently have BIOS 1.24, but this was happening with 1.21 and 1.23 as well. My X220 originally came with 1.16, and I haven't updated it until 1.21. Unfortunately I don't remember that far back, if the problem started occuring then. There was a brief discussion about this in another thread, but it went nowhe... Read more

My brand new x220 was shipped with an outdated driver for the installed wireless card (Intel Centrino Advanced-N 6205 (2x2 AGN). This resulted in extremely slow wireless browsing. After spending 4 hours changing settings on my laptop and wireless router I finally called tech support. They revealed the outdated driver, and showed me where to download the update. This solved the browsing problem. I understand keeping drivers updated is important, but I didn't expect a brand new computer to use two-year old drivers. It's like Lenovo shipped a laptop with "some assembly required, but didn't include the instructions. Has anyone else experienced this problem?

Answer:x220 Shipped with outdated drivers (slow WiFi)

So did my old Dell long time ago. It happens and no biggie to install the new updated ones.Your X220 has an driver update in Lenovo device experience when you click on Start > Click on Lenovo Device Experience > click on Update and drivers.  This will guide you in downloading any newer drivers.... Of course there maybe newer ones just coming out and the update site takes a while to catch up

I've read from various places that Lenovo whitelists WLAN/WWAN cards in BIOS. What level of whitelisting do they do? Will this block all aftermarket cards? I'm interested in installing a Killer 1102N Wifi card (primarily because of the control over the network stack the driver provides the user with). Will I have any problems with this? Do I need to hack my BIOS etc? Heres a link to the actual wifi card product http://www.bigfootnetworks.com/killer-wireless-n-1102/  I'm only purchasing this aftermarket because Lenovo doesn't actually offer this card in their notebooks

Answer:X220 Tablet + Killer 1102 N Wifi Card?

http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Problem_with_unauthorized_MiniPCI_network_card

The reason for the whitelist is to match the card to the antennas to comply with FCC regulations regarding interference.  Most mfgrs. do the same thing.  The link explains it fairly well.  The card has to be Lenovo branded.  You can take the exact same two wireless cards and if one is not Lenovo branded, it will throw the error.

And yes, you would have to modify the bios.

I've had no issues with my X220 for the past few years, been running great to the point that I completely stopped updating the drivers or the bios...

About a month ago I decided to do an upgrade in the System Update software, just get everything up to date. That included the latest bios, and all the other drivers...

Now since I've had an annoying issue with the WiFi (Intel 6205), where after coming out of sleep, it will disconnect from the WiFi after 15-30 minutes randomly. It ALWAYS happens, and it doesnt matter if it's idle, or downloading or streaming anything. It doesnt reconnect on its own, i have to cycle the wifi switch and it will reconnect, and stay connected for the remainder of time until i put it to sleep again.

There was another WiFi update since, and I installed it, and it didn't help... It's not an access point issue, as I've tried this on several WiFi routers and it does it every time...

Anyone have any idea what it could be? I dont feel like reinstalling, as everything other than this works perfectly.

Hi.  My X220 works perfectly in most situations. Most Wifi access points I connect to work just fine.Whenever I connect via WWAN I never have any issues. However:  there is a certain Wifi access point that my X220 cannot stay connected to.  It connects, then about 4 minutes later, the connection is dropped, and the only way to reconnect is to reset the centrino wireless adapter.  It does not matter whether I use Windows Wireless Services or Lenovo Access Connections.  After I do a reset, the connection will drop again a few minutes later.  A connection drop means an exclamation point appears with Limited Connectivity warning-- to be clear, at this point, there is zero internet access, until I reset the adapter.  This can go on forever, it does not matter if I reset 12 or 20 or 67 times, the connection will still drop after a few minutes. To be clear, in this location, every other Wifi enabled device works flawlessly.  Other laptops, iPads and iPhones all connect to this access point without incident and remain connected with excellent performance.  This is *not* a case of a defective access point.  In this location there is access point "NETGEAR" and also an extender "NETGEAR_EXT" For some unknown reason to me, my X220 cannot stay connected. About 2 months ago I sent my X220 back to Lenovo for replacement of the wireless, so I don't *think* the problem is because of the wirelesss card. I have trie... I've got brand new X220 with i5, and 6-cell battery. The problem is that the internett speed is ok the first 10-15 min,  but after 10-20 min download speed seems unstable and slow. Does load constant if i stream or go to a page.  I have tried several method in order to fix my internet problem. Without luck I have tried:Updating the driver, updating the BIOS, tried to change channel in modem, i tried to set AUTO under wireless settings, i have tried to have the charger in and whitout, I have tried with wireless-usb-card, One interesting fact, when i sit very close to the modem, the speed becomes good and stable. The speed is also good on different network.  Also with Cabel it seemed good. What can be the problem, and how can i  solve it? i have wireless card Wifi Link 1000 BGN 802.11n with channel for brand 2.4.

Hi guysHave an issue with an X220 where the system was ready to be sent to the user, I did system update the night before deploying which included a firmware update, next morning the wifi was disabled. (original bios 1.28 I think, new bios 1.4).The wifi card is no longer detected by the system at all, indicating the firmware has disabled the card. I managed to force it back to a previous BIOS revision but the issue persists, I then rolled to 1.4 official again and have tried the modded bios v1.4 (without wifi whitelist).I have tried the original card in a different unit and it works, and have tried the spare units wifi card (same model card) in this X220, also not detected. So it seems the BIOS is still blocking all similar Intel cards. Interestingly if I try a Broadcom card from a different model Lenovo, it is detected in the mini wifi slot.So this confirms the slot is operational.I cannot use it however since it is a full size card and does not fit in the mini wifi section in the x220.Last idea I had was to try all the cards in the 2nd (full length) slot but that will not pick up any Wifi cards at all. Anybody have an idea where to look to enable the Intel cards again? I have seen mention of a pin which is used for this but surely with the modded bios this should not be an issue? Note that with any of the intel cards inserted no devices are detected in Dev Man, and no option to switch them on via Fn+F5 (wifi option missing) Thanks for any suggestion... HiWhat's the wifi card model, its p/n, Lenovo FRU? If this card isn't approved to use in x220, do you get the lock screen with error 1802 message during the laptop booting with original BIOS? Regarding the patched BIOS any question should be addressed to its author, it's not a deal of this official forum.BIOS v.1.4 wasn't released ever. Intitial, factory released version 1.04 dated 2011 year is outdated. The recent version is 1.43. It's impossible to rollback this version to any previous version, 1.28 including.

Today my basically new x220 dropped from maybe 2 feet and the case ( where the heat grill is) broke a bit. The edge of the screen is split and the entire back and hinge where the monitor meets the keyboard is dented ( it looks as if the heat sink may be bent up. what are the steps I need to follow to get this fixed? I have ~270 days of warranty left.  There is a "compucom" service center near me, but what is the quickest way to get this repaired?

Hi Guys, I have a problem with my X220 and I hope some of you might help me. It started yesterday afternoon. I just updated a software (think it was Adobe Air) and got a bluescreen. System tried to reboot but all what happened was a flashing power button and fingerprint reader LED. System tried to boot over and over again without success. What I did is remove the battery and unplug the power cord, remove the RAMs (2x8gb Corsair) and push the power button for 30 seconds. Put the RAM back to the system but it didn't help. After some tries I saw the Lenovo screen and BIOS asked me whether I want to start the save mode or start windows normally. Whatever I chose the computer just turned off. What I found is that I can start Windows normally with just one RAM (but only one slot seems to work). As soon as I am using two RAMs or just use the "defective" one the computer is not able to start. I also tested another RAMs but it's not changing anything. My question is if sb else also had a similar problem and is it possible to solve this problem without sending my computer to Lenovo (I am still under warranty). Thanks a lot and have a great evening!!

Answer:Problem with X220 and RAM

Hi, the screen is behaving as if the computer thinks it has a larger resolution than it actually does. ie. the the text does not begin right up against the left hand side of the screen, and runs off the right hand side. NOTE this happens in the BIOS and POST screen, as well as in Windows. Even when the Windows "startup menu" appears, ei when you press F8, there is clearly a black column the runs down the left hand side of the screen. The column is about 1cm wide.In Windows, I am unable to get the desktop to fill the screen unless it extends off the side and below the bottom of the actual screen. If I set the resolution to the minimum, then I get the entrie desktop, but it is not centred on the screen, even if the centre option is chosen inthe driver config. any tip?

Hello everyone, I just got my x220 last week. There was a strange problem since I first got the machine. After I installed the battery and connected the adapter, I pressed the power button but nothing happened. So I took the battery and adapter off and connect again. After several times, the machine finally booted. Everything was all right until I shut it down. The next day, when I wanted to power up, the same thing happened again. Everyday, I have to remove the battery and reinstall it several times before I can boot the machine. My machine has no fingerprint reader. I love this new machine a lot except for this annoying problem. I'm wondering if it can be easily fixed so I don't have to contact custom service. Thanks

Hi!I have problems with the display of my x220 as the image keeps freezing. The problem has gotten worse lately as I have to carefully adjust the screen angle to make it work properly. If I move it even slightly, the image will most likely freeze again. Pressing (and holding) left bezel of the screen seems to help to prevent the freeze. During these freezes, only the image is affected(everything keeps running normally, music plays fine etc..). When frozen, the image is most of the time almost black and white and pixelated, sometimes it's completely grey(pic of this below). However, if I connect my laptop to external monitor with vga cable, the image of external monitor is unaffected during these freezes. This would suggest that the problem lies in the screen or the connection cables, right? I opened my computer to check the lcd cables and their connections to system board and they seemed intact ( I'm not an expert though ) My pc is no longer under warranty so what would you suggest? Is buying new panel the best option or should I just try with new lcd cable? The exact model number of my x220 is 4291-JN7 if that makes any difference. Thanks in advance!

Answer:x220 display problem

Hi,sad picture. It seems there might be an issue cable related near (or inside) of the screen hinges. Perhaps, some wires are crossed or closed because of hinges rubbing. Try to pull cable carefully from one side of hinges hole, then from another.

Hello,Am using X220 Windows 7 for few years with no major problems.Recently while trying to print jpg files the colors became totally different. It seems to be unrelated to the printer device itself (and actually the picture is displayed with totally wrong colors once going into print mode).Example: 1/  jpg photo is displayed correctly in Windows Photo Viewer.  2/  In the "print window" the reduced photo will show already in wrong colors. Never mind which printer is chosen.   3/  print itself will be with wrong colors. Same is correct for all printers on the list, incl. pdf printer.Color management show that the default profile ("Lenovo Thinkpad LCD Monitor, TPLCD.icm") is being used.I believe it is the same as was used all along when the problem didn't exist.Note: Windows updates are applied regularly. Also Lenovo's (important) updates were implemented periodically. Thank you in advance for any help.Gil

We've now confirmed that the X220 cpu is constantly throttling down to it's lowest state even when a max performance profile is used, even while plugged in. This very likely affects the T420/s / T520 too and maybe even W520's. The direct effect is reduced random write (the most important) ssd (and maybe even hdd) speeds, but who knows what else it is affecting. I see it throttling in cpu-z even while playing music and youtube videos with dxva off. This is not a new issue and not unique to Thinkpads; it's been around a few Intel chipset generations. What is unique to Sandy Bridge Thinkpad however is that the Windows tweaks that take care of it in other notebooks isn't working here. The only way I've found to stop the throttling is to either disable Intel Speedstep or CPU Power Management in the BIOS. The first is a drastic move since it locks the processor at high speed/voltage and the power consumption drawbacks are obvious with that. Disabling CPU Power Management is more subtle but it also has (less) significant effect on battery life. This is the sure fix for throttling since it uses the speed you want without constantly dropping it down to the lowest state, however while on battery even at the lowest active cpu state it uses at least 2.5-3W more than when it's enabled. So the solution looks like it needs to come in the form of a BIOS update. Unlike other power controls in Power Manager / BIOS, CPU Power Management (and Speedstep) can only be turned on/off globally, not sepa... Read more

Hello all, I just got a problem in the LCD screen. My X220 boots up normally, but in the half way, LCD turned off, and no display on the LCD screen. However, after 1 minutes or so, I plugged in VGA monitor, then system is found to be waiting for entering password. So, the screen swithed to VGA during system boot. After entering password, system works normally with external VGA monitor. I tried to transfer video to LCD using Fn+F7, but LCD does not turn on. I ran diagnostics, but found nothing. I checked and updated LENOVO and Microsoft software updates to the latest ones, but nothing changed.I wish this problem is caused by software rather than hardware (Since LCD turns On when power is applied, and with external VGA, everything is wowrking...).Is there anyone who had the same symptom and resolved this?By the way, my OS is Windows 7. Thank you for your insights. YoshiX220

Hi, I decided to upgrade my Thinkpad X220 (4291-37G) hard drive to SSD drive. After bit of research i opted to get Samsung 830 series 128GB SSD drive. Drive swap was like walk in a park thanks to lenovo service videos. But somehow i've hit a wall that i can't get over. The problem is with Recovery Media. I've made recovery media to USB thumb drive in case some catastrophic HDD failure etc. But when i used it to reinstall windows it encountered a following error:"Windows cannot verify the digital signature for this file. A recent hardware or software change might have installed a file that is signed incorrectly or damaged, or that might be malicious software from an unknown source."It copied all the .swm files to SSD but it seems when it started to verify files it failed.Picture of error message: http://i.imgur.com/djJtx.jpg So what do i do now? I know that Recovery Media USB is working fine because i've used it in past. Is Lenovo OEM software somehow flawed and doesn't like Samsung SSDs? I'd very much like to have fresh factory installation of Windows operating system.

I am still confused what caused this problem.Sometimes my X220 will freeze/hang. The only thing i can do is move the cursor around but I can't do nothing except it.I even try to restore it to factory setting and the problem is still there.

hello I have a Lenovo X220 with Fan problems. The problem is the FAN isn't starting unless i Flash the BIOS. After i Flash the BIOS, then the Fan works again, but if i power off the laptop and power it back on it won't start unless i flash the bios again. What could be the problem for this? The laptop is still in warranty , but i don't have any papers and it was bought from outside EU. Is it any worth to go to warranty?

I just received my new X220, and I noticed that keyboard is not properly adjusted, left side of the keyboard is slightly swinging when I press keys on that part and makes louder and strange sound while right side is so quite and nice. anybody had this problem on any thinkpads ? I am sending it for repair, wondering if I could fix it myself.thanks.

Answer:X220 Keyboard problem

most likely the battery is not seated properly, you just need to remove the keyboard and reseat it.http://www.lenovoservicetraining.com/ion/X220/index.htmlcheck the keyboard removal/installation video under the CRU parts.

Hello everybody,  I have 2 notebooks and one server in my house.  One of my notebook is Y530 and the other one is Samsung u10.  The wifi connection dropped 10 out of 10 times when I copy large size file(600MB) to my home server with my Y530.  At first, I thought it was my wireless router problem.  So  I used my Samsung U10 and copy the same file to the server and this U10 copied the whole file to the server without any problem.  So I called Lenovo support and they said it is normal for a wireless line dropped off when transferring large data ~~~~~Is there any Y530 user here and encountered the same issue??  Pls help By the way, I have already un-installed the ReadComm and set the aggressive mode to low.  The issue still persist~~~~><

Answer:Help~~~Y530 wifi problem. When transferring big file to my server. The wifi connection dropped

Hi all, I recently purchased a lenovo G580 laptop; windows 8My laptop wifi works perfectly when I am at home or connected to any normal wifi. It does not work when I am at school which typically once you connect to the school's wifi, it opens up a web broweser asking for your usename and password to get compelte access. (figure 1- from my other laptop)My lenovo laptop cannot download this website, therefore I have no internet access at school since I cannot put my information inside. (figure 2- from lenovo laptop)   The problem is not my school's router because I have wifi connection on my other laptop here without any problems. Also the problem is not really the location/wifi of my lenova laptop because I can connect to my phone's personal hotspot when I am at school. Simply, the problem is found when I cannot connect to my school's wifi because it requires me to download a site to put my information.  I have read other forums and try to figure it myself, however, I am very noobie when it comes to computers. So I appreciate a step-by-step instructions. For example, please provide links that I may need to download to update my driver.I have called customer care, and I am not going to pay 100 bucks just to fix a simple problem. So i appreciate your time.

Got a problem I cannot seem to solve. I need to communicate with a wifi router that is not itself directly connected to the computer in order to change its channel to improve overall signal quality for the two Wi-Fi routers I have and deconflict with a neighbor's Wi-Fi. The router I need to adjust is connected to the internet through the cable router. It is not directly connected to the computer - thus the Genie program won't talk to it. If I do wire directly to that wi-fi, the internet connection is lost (no cable port to wire it up, unfortunately) and the Genie program won't let me do anything either. So I need to know how to adjust a Wi-Fi router that is acting merely as a wireless antennae to a different router, rather than a direct connection to the internet.

Ideas?

(Background info to save time)

I have a very long house with a lot of metal in it. The Cable drop for internet is in the basement at one end. The cable router has a built in Wi-Fi serving half the house, to which I have (via a LONG cord) connected a second (NetGear) wifi router. Until recently, these have worked fine for the limited internet surfing we've done. This was necessitated by not having good signal at either end of the house if Wi-Fi was in the middle, or no signal at one end if Wi-Fi was left at one end of the house or the other. Thus, two Wi-Fi's.

However - my son is now of an age he wants to play FPS games on the laptop; meaning he needs good ping. ... Read more

Hi all, I spilled tea accidentally on my x220 and the keyboard stopped functioning. I ordered a new keyboard from eBay and the seller indicates that its an original keyboard. However, when I installed it its not working. I followed the same instructions on the X220 Series Hardware Maintenance Guide and the videos related to replacing the keyboard and with no luck. The problem I get is that when I install the new keyboard, the laptop starts and after around 2 seconds it shutsdown immediately and even the battery does not charge. I even updated the BIOS and after the update when I do the same procedure, I get about 3 seconds, I'm not sure if its related somehow.  I also tried to disconnect the laptop from all power sources leaving it for about 20 mins, connect the power and start it, and again the same issue. I contacted the seller and they say they tried it before sending it and it was working fine. I don't know if the issue is power related or the ordered keyboard is defective. Any help would be great. Thx,

Hi all, I have two X220's with identical problems. Normal procedure for connecting to our terminal server (Windows 7 - server = v2008) is:- connect to the internet- connect to VPN (using Cisco VPN Client Version 5.0.07.0290)- connect to terminal server Everything works fine when connecting through WIFI - and everything works fine when connecting via the integrated broadband modem in the X220 until trying to connect to the terminal server. Then it says the Remote Desktop cannot find the computer XX. I.e. everything works great until that step. This includes full working internet over 3G and succesfull connection to VPN. Since I have two identical machines - this should rule out hardware errors. It must be software. Ideas? Anyone?

Hello All,I've been browsing the forums occasionally for the past week and noted the "pulsing/whining" problem with the x220. I was wondering, does anyone NOT experience this problem or hear this noise? If so, what is your system's configuration and when did you purchase your laptop?I'm asking because I really want an x220 and want to know if this is a widespread problem. Thank you for your time.

Answer:Is there any x220 owner who does NOT have a fan noise problem?

I don't have the fan problem now. I had the problem before but I called for the service and got it solved. The one that had the problem for me was built in April and the new one came from the older stock in March.

Hello, a first time Thinkpad user here. I'm having a problem with my new laptop, X220 (model 4290W1B). The specifications are these: i5-2520M, 4GB, X25-M (upgraded), 12.5" HD Premium LED 1366x768, Intel HD 3000, a/g/n WLAN, BT, Sec. Chip, FP, HD-Cam. I also purchased the Ericsson F5211gw module for wireless WWAN / 3g connections. The wireless network part of it is working fine, but the GPS doesn't work. The module was installed by the reseller, so I assume the antennas etc. are installed correctly. I have installed drivers for the card from Lenovo support (and system update) and installed Thinkvantage GPS utility. In device manager I have device "F5521gw Mobile Broadband GPS Port (COM5)" with an exclamation point. Device status box has this information: "This device cannot start. (Code 10)". When I try to start the GPS utility it doens't start and gives this error:"The GPS NMEA COM port is not available. You need to check the following things.- Another GPS application is using the COM port.- Com port is disabled. You can enable the COM port in Device Manager" I have no other GPS applications or haven't disabled the COM port. I think there isn't any options about the GPS in BIOS (I have disabled stuff I don't need) I have tried uninstalling the drivers and reinstalling them. I also have reinstalled Windows 7 (unrelated reason) but the problem has persisted. Any assistance would be welcomed.

Hi, I own a 2 year old ThinkPad X220. Till a few days ago, I used to get 3 hours battery backup on my laptop. A couple of days ago, my laptop battery dropped to 5% very soon. Then, it would charge upto 100% in 15 miinutes. I tried to do a battery gauge reset using Lenovo power management tool. Since then, my battery has been on 0%. I tried to do the trick of removing battery and AC power and pressing the power button for 10 seconds, but it didn't work.Since my laptop runs fine on AC, I dont think it is the fault of the power cord. Also, I run a dual boot with Ubuntu 14.04 and Windows 7, so it is unlikely to be an OS problem. Now, when I plug in the AC adapter with battery, the charging light falshes green thrice and after about 5-6 seconds, it flashes orange twice and green once, after which the light goes off.Is my battery really dead or is it my system's fault? Please advise me what to do.Thanks in advance for the help.

I bought a DisplayPort to HDMI cable to connect my X220 to my TV. It transfers image and audio, but the image on the TV is cut off at all 4 edges. I have tried cycling through over 10 different resolutions, but the problem doesn't go away. I'm wondering if anyone else is having this problem? I have experienced this on 2 different TVs so far, so I think the problem would either lie with the cable or the X220s display drivers. I cannot check for sure which it is as the X220 is the only device I have that has a DisplayPort.

Hi All Sometimes after redocking resolution on external screen doesn't change to one set in  Intel graphics and media panel. My system Lenovo x220 docking station 3 OS Windows XP SP3. I have more the same systems and they don't have this problem. I updated system via lenovo vantage update software but resolution problem still randomly occurring. I replaced docking station as well. What could be wrong? Thanks

Answer:Docked resolution problem x220

As I understand the graphics disturb after removing docking station, if the issue occurs for few seconds then it can be ignored.

If the resolution does not come to normal then you should update the BIOS and check.

I have the i7 X220.  It's been great, but I'm starting to have a few issues.  Just want to get some feedback in case there's something simple I need to do before contacting service and probably sending it in for repair (it was purchased March 2010). 1)  Display is great 98% of the time, but I notice that the colors go off - a bit day glo/neon, if I move the laptop while it's on and in use.  This used to be just if I walked across the room, now it happens sometimes even if I just move it from my lap. The same thing occurs sometimes after I've been using it for a while.  Wondering if it's heat related or if I have a loose connection somewhere.  Note that it generally goes right back to good if I refresh the display. 2) A more serious issue - I've had charging problems with this laptop off and on for the last few months.  I purchased a spare power supply and battery, and I noticed that it seemed to charge fine with the newer power supply, but was random with the old one.  Batteries didn't seem to make a difference.  Today, once again I can't get it to charge at all - with either power supply or battery.   You're thinking, "Well just send it in for service."  That's probably what I'll have to do, but these tend to be random issues, and I've not had good luck with repairs in the past when that was the case.  So, just trying to get some background and see if these are known issues. Thanks.

Answer:Display & Charging Problem - X220

hey shazza, for #1 , i'm guessing a loose cable is causing this since it happens when you move the unit. If you want, use this >> http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/guides-and-manuals/detail.page?DocID=UM006464open your unit and ensure all cables is connected correctly.another thing you can try is to uninstall the current graphic driver for your unit , let windows install its generic drivers and see if it happens again.now for #2 , that is something I will have to say send it to service. I have not seen that happen before.

Hello Community, I'm having some problems with my X220 at work. I installed Windows 8 on it a few months ago. Everything was working okay. But for the past couple of weeks I've had some screen problem. Once I close the lid on the laptop and reopen it again the screen stays black without showing me anything again. I have to do a hard reboot everytime that happens and it happens 2 times a week. When that happens I lose some important data and it's simply a pain in the a**. Maybe you guys had the same problem and found a solution. Or it might be a Hardware problem of some sort. But before throwing it in the garbage I just wanna see if someone has a solution for me. Thanks everyone and have a nice day. Regards, Phil

Hi have a serious issue with my X220 IPS screen. after replacing the screen under warranty (flickering) everything was working perfectly. Then after a couple of month I took my x220 out of my carry on luggage and a band of about 5 cm on the right side of my screen was behaving weirdly (at the beginning it was intermittent but it became soon a constant, stable, problem)Better than any description you can see the problem by looking at these images:Figure 1Figure 2Figure 3 (Good part of the screen)Figure 4 (Bad part of the screen) Looks like some of the dark colors are inverted... What do you think the problem is? I couldn't find anything about this, I'm having an issue that one day just came up on the x220's ips screen. This isn't ghosting or white spots. Its hard to describe but its basically a large semi transparent rectangle on the screen that becomes darker as the screen flexes. Sometimes you can barely see it and other times it is really clear. Heres two pictures to hopefully illustrate the problem.http://imgur.com/8cDUDFH,GYh9VgZ

Hi everyone, Anybody flashed the new 1.36 BIOS of X220, and afterwards find the system sometimes won't recovery from sleep properly? I've flash my X220 a few days ago, and after that there sometimes happens it won't recover from sleep. When the problem happens, I try to wake my X220, only the power indicator will turn solid, fan will be on, but nothing else. Then if I press the power button the system will down immediately (not like normally you have to press and hold for a few seconds to turn off the laptop), and restarts one or two seconds later, and then shutdown itself before anything shows up on the screen, and then restart, and keep on this restart - immediate shutdown infinitely. I'll have to detach powercord and detach the battery to make it stop. And then I turn it on, everything is fine. Because recently I've updated every driver and firmware on my X220 to newest, I am not sure if it is the 1.36 BIOS. Actually I've updated everything a few days before 1.36, then I've noticed the new BIOS and flashed it at once. Between the whole system update and 1.36 BIOS there are like only a week give or take one or two days, during that period I've never noticed this issue. I am using Win7 Ultimate x64. It ran perfectly on my laptop for at lease 6 months so I don't think it is the OS's problem. I do suspect if it has something to do with the cold weather. However, I've flashed it back to 1.35 to see if the symptom lifts.  Please reply here if you ar... Read more

I have just purchased a new genuine Lenovo 9-cell battery for my 3 year old X220.  It is verified with the Lenovo power manager and all relevant battery information were displayed correctly. However, the battery is being charged at constant 0.17A and taking forever to charge up.  The battery reset procedure was aborted after 24 hours. When I put my original 6-cell battery inside and the charging Amp varies according to the level of the battery. I have tried downgrading BIOS, removing Lenovo Power Manager and driver. There is no improvement. The vendor was kind enough to let me test the new 9-cell battery on other units of X220, X230 and it performed normally: the charging Amp varies according to the level of battery left.  Therefore, the battery is not at fault here. Can you share any experience and solution? Thanks.Best regardsEric

I just got my tablet yesterday. And there is already 1 problem. The pen keeps clicking continously when it hovers a few milimeters above the screen. This makes it impossible to write or draw anything. I did a lot of research on this issue and saw a lot of people having the same hovering problem with no real solution. I tried everything they suggested but still not working properly. I replaced the pen tip, I updated everything, disable eraser problem, etc... But the pen is still malfunctioning. I am very frustrated thinking about return the product. Please someone help me out. I appreciate it very much.

Answer:X220 Tablet, Pen Hovering Problem

You should probably return it, this sort of behavior happens when there is a strong electromagnetic field nearby to interfere with the pen signal, or something wrong with the pen itself. Try with a different pen if you have access to one.

Hello!  I'm experiencing a weird issue regarding wired networking in the moment on my ThinkPad X220 4290w1b running Windows 7. Here's the full story: When Windows Update offered me a new driver for my LAN Adapter I did not hesitate and installed it.That is when the trouble began. I cannot connect to my LAN anymore, Windows (nearly, will explain that later) always tells me that there is no cable plugged in and the status LEDs (on the port you plug the cable in) remain completely inactive.I checked the cable with my sisters Laptop: Works.I tried using a different cable and port on the router: Does not work. I made sure that the Router/Cable has no error with another PC.My guess is that Windows Update didn't do its job well. So I thought I could do better: Unfortunately, installing the newest driver from the Lenovo Homepage does not solve the problem. I tried multiple ways: manually deleting the LAN Adapter from Windows Device Manager before installation..., I also tried a driver from the Intel Homepage. There were two times though when the problem seemed to be solved: I deinstalled the LAN Adapter in device manager and installed the Lenovo driver afterwards, so that the device was detected again. After waiting for some minutes (no idea why that has an impact oO) everything works like a charm. After a reboot the problem comes back though.I updated all other drivers and also the BIOS, but it did not solve the problem, too. I would be very glad if the problem co... Read more

Answer:Wired network problem on X220

Are you connected to a gigabit network lan ?If not, try to force the driver to a 100Mbps speed. If yes, double check your cable, maybe it isn't 1Gbps ready or just low quality.

Hello all, I have this massive problem with my cursor randomly moving and clicking all over the screen without being touched. I hadn't had this problem until after I had my cracked screen replaced with a new one. I've tried unplugging the mouse, disabling the touchpad, etc. and nothing. Help would be awesome. Thanks ahead.

Hello there, I bought my X220 from Lenovo website in december 2011. It came with a 9 cell battery. These have been working flawlessly since. In september 2013, I bought a spare 6 cell battery (44+) from Lenovo website. This computer being often wall-plugged, I set Power Manager with these thresholds 85% - 95%.In july 2014, it started acting weirdly : when reaching 40% capacity in Lenovo Power Manager, Windows would pop a warning window for critical 6% power left, and seconds after the computer would go to hibernate. The battery had 40 cycles. Support sent me a replacement battery (but didn't claim the faulty one). December came, and this new one showed the same behaviour as the one before, as it had only 5 cycles ! Hadn't the original 9 cell battery still worked, I would have suspected the laptop to "kill" batteries. So I tried a calibration of the faulty batteries : both would work perfectly for a few time, then get back to that erratic behaviour. I'm not willing to try another calibration as I am concerned with safety. Is it possible that 2 batteries, built 1 year appart, to be faulty ?What should I do ?

Answer:X220 - Weird battery problem

It could just be really bad luck, or a bad batch with weak cells. The original (now recalled) 9-cell in my W520 would jump from 25% to 6% sometimes (notably if the machine was under heavier load than usual battery tasks). A calibration will make the gauge normal for a while, but it would invariably return to the same behavior. Still got almost 600 cycles out of it up until recall with only 14% stated battery wear. This new replacement seems to be holding up fine, though.

I've been having issues with the X220 i7 model shutting down randomly. I've had this issue before and had the mother board replaced under warranty. My warranty has ran out and the issue is coming back. I cannot get any work done on this machine anymore. After some research it seems like its an issue that many people are having with the X220 and the culprit has been identified as a faulty motherboard. I just called Lenovo support and they said theres nothing I can do but pay for another motherboard. I'm not sure that I want to pay for the repair if the issue wil return with another motherboard.

Answer:X220 Random Shutdown Problem

Hi swu011,thanks for posting and sorry to hear about the issues you're facing. I was just wondering when does the shutdown happen exactly? Was there a particular program you were running? Were you connected to the AC or running on battery? Was there any BSOD prior to the shutdown happening.?At this this point its really hard to pin point what exactly is causing this but what I suggest is for you update your BIOS first. This can be downloaded from the link below.http://download.lenovo.com/ibmdl/pub/pc/pccbbs/mobiles/8duj23us.exehope this helps.Regards

Recently bought a new Lenovo X220 and have had it for about 2 months now.  It pretty much stays in my home office - rarely goes anywhere else.  Never been dropped, banged, etc...  This morning, I noticed that the audio from my headphone jack is only on (1) side - the RIGHT side.  I've gone into the settings (SOUND, DEVICE MANAGER, SMART AUDIO) and have tried to adjust the panning/balance settings on all of those but - NO LUCK.  This is REALLY unfortunate, seeing as how this laptop is used for music.ANY useful ideas or suggestions?  Has anyone else encountered this issue?  Any fixes?
