X301 Bitlocker asking for recover key every time.

Question: X301 Bitlocker asking for recover key every time.

I went out and bought a 128gb 1.8" SSD for the purpose of upgrading my x301 to Win 7. I really wanted to preserve my old XP environment on the stock 64gb. I did a fresh Win 7 Ultimate install, initially I installed the 64bit version but found my VPN software would not support it so then I wiped and installed 32 bit. I did leave the 100mb partition that the 64bit version created. Installed Win 7 32bit, installed the lenovo software update program and let it put all of the software on the laptop. Did the win 7 update thing (this all took the better part of a day). I wresteled the TPM chip and now have it owned by win 7. Had to do the "hit esc" till the red win7 loader, power off, enter bios, clear keys method, but it worked. Now Win 7 says it ownes the tpm. Trying to turn on Bitlocker doing the "key test" results in the screen on every reboot saying that something has changed. I then turned on bitlocker, let it encrypt drive without doing the test and it completed sucessfully but every reboot asks for the recovery key. I've tried just about every "fix" I can find for this, including, changing bios boot order to only include hdd, suspending/resuming BL and a host of other things as well, updated bios. Nothing seems to work. I'd really like to use bit locker but not if it is not going to work right. I did come across a post that involved some policy editing then turning of/on again and have not yet tried that. Just wondering if leaving the 100meg partition from my first 64bit install might have something to do with my probelm as I've read that is where they keys are stored. Since all of this encrypting/descrypting takes a lot of time so I'm limited on how much I can do. Any suggestions would be great. Seems like lots of people have trouble with bitlocker for various reasons.

Preferred Solution: X301 Bitlocker asking for recover key every time.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: X301 Bitlocker asking for recover key every time.

I believe I found the problem enabling bitlocker on my x301. I tried just about every possible thing I could find on the internet and was unable to get it enabled. Every time on the next boot I would get the message (pre windows), from the bios that the environment had been changed and bitlocker would fail to encrypt the drive. If I encrypted the drive without the bitlocker test it would encrypt but every boot would make me enter they recovery key in order to boot. Last night I found a post that indicated that bitlocker would make a 300 meg partition (100 for itself, 200 for oem utilities). That got me thinking. Today I decided to shrink my system partition and leave some unpartitioned space on the drive in case it was trying to make this partition. That's when things changed. Suddenly bitlocker started working properly. I still only see the 100 meg windows partition, but maybe there is another hidden partition that it was unable to create because I had given all the space to my system drive. I left 500 megs unpartitioned, enabled bitlocker and it's working fine. For me, problem solved. Hope this helps someone. One nice thing about Win7 is that it allows you to shrink/expand volumns right from disk management so no playing around with PE boot disks.

I have just updated my new X301 running Vista 32 bit with the latest BIOS and I get a boot failure message which refers to Bitlocker. After ignoring this the laptop will then boot.In an effort to fix this I disabled bitlocker and the machine rebooted OK.I then tried to enable bitlocker which now fails with the following message: The BIOS did not correctly communicate with the MBR. Please help!!

Answer:X301 - Bitlocker fails after BIOS update

Hi jasonw, welcome to the Lenovo Community! If you are using BitLocker, the BIOS upgrade sequence is: 1. Disable BitLocker (don't decrypt).2. Upgrade the BIOS.3. Enable BitLocker. It sounds like you did Step 2 before Step 1?

my laptop has freezed, I restart it with power button but now, at start up, BitLocker said that:

You need to enter your recovery key because Secure Boot has been disabled. Either Secure Boot must be re-enabled, or BitLocker must be suspended for Windows to start normally.

I gone to UEFI settings and define a password to re-enabled Secure Boot but BitLocker when I restart comptuer said that Bios secure parameters has changed... It doesn't solve the problem.

The problem is I don't have my recovery key. I tried to recover my recovery key using Microsoft account but I had to update my phone number and so my security settings are locked for one month. My question is :
Is it possible to boot on Ubuntu USB key or plug HDD to an Ubuntu computer, copy files and decrypt them one by one with my password session ?Is it possible to retrieve my recovery key using Windows command line and session password ? (I can access to Windows recovery menu so I have access to commands line.)Is a program to decrypt completely my hard drive exists ? I will write it on a USB key, start it, enter my session password and it will decrypt all the disk or something like that.
Thanks a lot.

Answer:How can I recover my BitLocker recovery key

What do you mean by "session password?"

Assuming you are using a TPM with BitLocker (which is the default) then there is no way to recover your drive without the recovery key. That is the entire point of BitLocker.

How can i recover SSD with bitlocker active? When i put the SSD disk plugged in another machine with external adapter, i can see the disk but with RAW format. I have the recovery key but when i use the recover software (example EASEUS) i cannot see any field to put my recovery key and i cannot see any important files to recover because the drive has encripted.

Someone else had the same problem?

Question: X301 SSD Boot Time

Hi,I'm considering the X301 with a SSD. I'm not sure if I'm going to buy now or just hold up until Win7 or a hardware refresh. One thing I'm concerned with is boot time. Can anyone tell me what their getting on a X301 with MS Office loaded for boot time, hibernate time and wake time? I'm not planning to use the dvd and will have the 6 and 3 cell batteries installed. Thanks. Regards-Michael G.

Answer:X301 SSD Boot Time

just so you know, windows 7 could be up to a year away.  my X300 would boot server 2008 in about 35 seconds to the desktop with aero installed.   i never used vista on it. hibernate... dunno.   i never use it. sleep and wake only took a few seconds.   sleep was roughly 10 seconds and wake about 2. office 2003 apps loaded in about 3~5 seconds depending on the app. i haven't had the chance to play with an X301 but would imagine it to be the same or slightly quicker due to the faster memory bus. hopefully that helps a bit. good luck!

I had a drive that was encrypted with bitlocker. After changing the drive and restart I noticed there were only two of the drives that on them Windows installed and another drives changed to free space.
Bitlocker encrypted drive was 100G and another drive 244G. Drives I converted to a drive then format it to restore my data. All the information was not encrypted, was returned but encrypted data was not returned even one bit. I changed the size of D to 200 GB again and after a lot of searching I found the repair-bde command.

Hello Dears. I had encrypted my drive by Bitlocker in windows 7.
few days after my friend did quick format in my encrypted drive.
my 300 gb of data lost. and nothing saved
i remember unlock password.
how can i recover my data ??? i need my data
i tried drive recovering tools (advanced EFS data recovery, easeus . . ,) . but . . . it's encrypted and formatted drive.
can i undo quick format and decrypt ???
sorry my english is not good.
someone help me please.

Answer:Can i recover lost data from encrypted drive by Bitlocker

BitLocker is not the cause of failed to recover files. Format a drive will clear all data saved on the hard disk. Thus recovery formatted data will be a hard disk based technology but not related to operation system. There is no build-in data recovery feature in Windows operations. So we will needto use third party recovery tool or contact third party data recovery company for current issue.

As recovery missing data service will be expensive, we can also check emails and contact friends to see if that can help get a part of files back especially for photos, documents etc.

I accidently formatted one of my drives which was previously encrypted.
I tried some third party software as "recover my file" but it didn't work.
Later then, I experimented on a formatted (not encrypted before) usb drive to recover files by same software and it did work.
After that, I encrypted the usb drive and then formatted it. Then I tried to recover by same software, but it didn't work. So, it's apparent that it is not possible to recover from a encrypted and formatted drive by a usual recovery software. Is there any
other method that can help me.
Please inform, I'm in a dire need.

I am running Windows 7 Enterprise with Bitlocker.
Unfortunately I ran into problems booting up and eventually it looked like the harddrive (SSD) was malfunctioning. My backup solution was fresh so I haven't given it much thought, just replaced the drive, but I would still like to know if it's possible to
recover data from the drive while it's encrypted with Bitlocker?
I have searched the net for info but none of them seem to focus on my problem; the drive itself shows no volume information, so I'm unable to run any decryption protocols on it. Therefore I'm unable to run any recovery software on it either.
I'm afraid I might've made the situation worse with my attempts at recovery, but still, any help is appreciated!

please help
how can I recover data from a damaged disk (not physically) of an external encrypted Bitlocer.
Description of the situation:

After connecting the drive - I can decipher it by typing the password - but when you try to open the contents of the report the message "format disk"
- the disk probably has some volume damaged - it has been disconnected from the computer (without being turned off)
What I have done so far:

Using the "Lazesoft" program - I managed to copy (of course after entering the password
on the damaged disk)
the content to another external disk (full - looking after size) but -
this data is encrypted (mainly ending with .ER)
I am asking for a hint:

whether the data that is on the new disk can somehow read (on this disk I can try) [or/and]how to create a damaged disk image to try on another disk [or/and]how to repair a damaged disk (as a last resort) - I am afraid of total data loss [or/and]what other program to use to copy data from a damaged disk
but decrypted
Thank you in advance for your help
Best Regards

Hi!At first I hope I'm posting in the right forum for my questions about the upcoming X301. If not, please move to the right section.Next I want to ask a few questions about some facts I read in the first reviews of the X301 (sources see below). First the reviewers experience a notable shorter battery life of the Thinkpad X301 (3h max without the additional bay battery) compared to the X300 (4.5h max without the additional bay battery). Is this true or do you will there be any optimizations which will lengthen battery life until you sale them?Next, one of the testing sites mention, the boot time is about 1min 37sec on first startup, which is again far longer than booting the X300 on first startup. Will here also be some optimizations till shipping the X301?  I'm referring to these sources:geek.comGottaBeMobile.comLaptop MagazineTigerDirect videomaybe anyone can send this to someone official, who may answer my questions?greetings from Austria,myAces

Dear community,  I recently updated my BIOS using the thinkvantage flash BIOS utility for no reason other than it appeared on the update utility. I also updated the model number, once again for no real reason other than update pleasure. Now, everything works perfectly fine on the system, and I have no problems EXCEPT: I use New York Times Adobe Air product called "Times Reader". Since the update, when I try to log into the Times Reader I get an error that states "Authentication Error. Check that your system time is set correctly." In the pre-boot set up screen the time seems to be set right, and in the windows utility the time is set correctly. So my questions is, after a BIOS flash / Model # update, does the system time function need some re-boot / update?  Thanks!

Thought I'd ask before I do something stupid
I'd like to encrypt my fileservers with Bitlocker but I wonder how fast it is these days? The servers run Windows 8.1 and when trying on another system I get about 100MB reads and writes during encryption - is this somewhere in the ballpark for performance? Oh and the cpu supports hardware encryption as well

Thanks in advance

Just finished encrypting a Raid6 array with 8x2TB drives. Time approximately 24 hours and an average speed of about 125-130MB/sec. Cpu is an AMD A4 5300 dual core cpu. Not so bad imho.

I've never used Bitlcoker before

Have win 8.1 pro

Can I use this to encrypt my office 365 access database files or folders, too?

If so, how?

Also, I'm currently saving files to 'skydrive / myusername'. Is that the same as the new Onedrive pro?

I want to understand where to save my files to have BOTH local & onedrive copies. THANKS !

Answer:How to use BitLocker for first time user

Bitlocker is only for Drives, USBs, partitions and other forms of drive. However Bitlocker is not available for skydrive for it is not a drive. You can encrypt files by using Microsoft Office's built-in encryption. If you want you can put your local files on a usb or you can make a partition and then encrypt it with bitlocker.

There is no other way that I know that can encrypt BOTH local and Onedrive, your best option is to encrypt all the files one by one using Microsoft office's encryption (or password lock)

Using a Dell tablet, with Windows 8.1, I now have to enter the 64-digit bitlocker recovery key every time I power up the tablet.  After doing
so, it permits me to continue to restart.  Previously, I was only required to enter a password to get to the desktop.  If I run Windows update, or any other process which might require a restart, it will do so without having to reenter the bitlocker
key.  How may I determine what caused this change in powering up the tablet, requiring the entry of more that just a normal password?  This just occurred within the last 1-2 months.

I have automatic incremental backups scheduled to run every day at 6PM of our server (Win 2008 r2). The task backups up important folders to 2 different external drives (X: and Y: ) running bitlocker. They are set to automatically unlock on the server when connected.

Once a day when I get in the office in the morning I swap the drives for an off-site backup. Every few days (about 80% of the time), one of them remains locked still after plugging it in until I double click it under Computer, then it unlocks (no password, which is how it's set).

If I don't manually go n check and it's locked, the backup fails that night. How can I get it to automatically unlock right when I plug it in 100% of the time?

Answer:Bitlocker Not Auto-Mounting Drives Every Time

I think I solved it. I was just unplugging the drive every time but for a week+ I "safely removed it" within Windows before unplugging it and it seems to mount fine every time so far.

I had a lot of issues with the screen blinking/flickering on/off when removing the laptop from the WD-15 dock and read that the new BIOS upgrade would fix this issue so I went ahead and upgraded the BIOS.
I installed "DellDockingStationFwUp_1.0.0.8_20161220_WD15.exe" and "XPS_9550_1.2.21.exe".
I added Bitlocker protection the first thing I did when I got the laptop about a year ago and it has been working fine.
After this upgrade (with or without) the dock attached I get the Bitlocker code prompt at every start of the laptop.
I can't seem to roll back the FW upgrades as the installer tells me I have a newer version installed...

Answer:Windows 10 Bitlocker code required every time after BIOS upgrade on XPS 15 9560

After searching and checking I found that I no longer have any compatible TPM according to Windows.
(Win 10 Enterprise 64bit Build 14393)
Looking in the BIOS there is no setting for TPM anymore so then I found a way to rollback BIOS FW.
It was by shutting down, unplug the power plug and then keep CTRL+ESC pressed while plugging in the power plug. That brings up a prompt where I could do a rollback and after that tehre still is no TPM in BIOS. I run the same again but this time I chose to reset the BIOS settings, still no TPM!
I still have to give the Bitlocker key at every startup and to top it off the laptop no longer goes to sleep when the lid is closed, it shuts down even though the settings is to "sleep".
This of course means that every time I carry it around I have to add the Bitlocker key when picking it up.
Our corporate network requires Bitlocker so I can't use the laptop without bitlocker in the domain.
Any suggestions?

Team - Trouble here!! Have ~730 GB of data on my 1TB iOmega HDD. Turned on BitLocker on my Windows 7
system, set password, created and saved recovery key file, and i saw it started encrypting (very slowly, which i think is normal). Left it there for hours and when i came back I saw it is asking me for my password for my unlocking... which i entered and it
just wont open. Goes "NOT RESPONDING". I did not lose power during the initial encryption and neither did i pull out the HDD (to my knowledge) even though I read in the MS content that encryption should resume the next time a drive is plugged in,
it it got interrupted the first time or whatsoever.

However, started my research and was shocked to find several people have had similar problems. Also references that data must be backed up before encrypting (may
be common sense). Well, i have not done that, did not know that a simple of act of encrypting could be such a crime, especially when you are encrypting what you have just taken a backup off - before proceeding towards a formatting of my laptop.

Tried the manage-bde commands and the results are in a pic that i cannot attach. Interestingly, i find that the "manage-bde -status" command shows "conversion status" and "percentage of encryption" as unknown. Is this normal? I
do not really remember seeing any screen (when i came back after hours to check the status of the initial BitLock'ing) stating "hey i am done&quo... Read more

HELP, just bought my first Thinkpad, the X301 from tigerdirect. Everything's great except that it freezes every now and then, at least once a day.  Haven't installed anything other than factory pre-installed stuff, thought it was the McAfee hence got rid of it, running AVG antivirus now. Thought it was IE so switched to Firefox, no help there neither, Google Chrome, still freezes. Strange thing is, on Vista Business, when it freezes, there is nothing you can do except for HARD RESET!  I mean CTRL-ALT-DEL does nothing at all, neither did CTRL-SHIFT-ESC. Are there any other owners facing the same issues? Updated the X301 with patches, both ThinkVantage and Windows, still hangs. It's very annoying to pay such a high price to go back to primitive Windows that freezes.  Is this normal? Please help. Thank you. Message Edited by teeteet on 10-27-2008 08:35 AM

Answer:X301 - Freezes all the time, CTRL-ALT-DEL / CTRL-SHIFT-ESC no effect

I had a similar issue with my Tigerdirect x301 but seemed to have resolved it by doing a clean install of Vista. There is a good thread on the forums over on on how to do this. In my particular case I eliminated most of the extra but IMO unneeded software that came with it and went with 64bit Vista business since I had that OEM disc from my desktop build. I did have one temporary problem in the clean install with it stopping the Vista installation, saying I needed a driver for the Mat**bleep**a CD/DVD device, but I eventually got around that by going into the BIOS and switching the SATA controller mode option to Compatibility from AHCI mode. I got this thing last week and it must have froze 10-12 times in the first two days and in the five days since I did the clean install it has not crashed once and I swear it does everything faster.  Just this afternoon I added another 2 gb of RAM and looking forward to see what 4 gb will do for speed.

At first, I don't need to recover my data, I just want my drive back to re-use it.
How can a format my usb drive including all boot sectors which sees to be locked/write-protected by bitlocker?

My problem starts with decrypting my drive by deactivting bitlocker on it by entering the valid password/recovery key. At 36% of decryption the process halts without reason. Now, I'm unable to access my drive or resume the process.

I tried... format with windows
   ..remove with diskmgmt
   ... remove with diskpart
   ... repair-bde
   ... manage-bde
   ... ubuntu live cd
... mass production tool software, to override the whole stick

nothing worked. The only thing which worked was once the software M3 Bitlocker recovery Free, but just one time to access the locked partition. But, as mentioned I don't need to recover my data. With that tool I'm not able to wipe the drive.

That Bitlocker protects my data till the end is good, but that it breaks my data and my hardware in such a case is not fair.
How can I break the write-protection mode to finally wipe the hard drive?

I have an older Laptop that operates on  Windows 7 Ultimate,I have the Bitlocker Drive Encryption on and encrypted for Drive C:   I now started the process of encrypting my external usb hdd Drive E: which has a long way to go for it's large
size. During the encryption I needed to disconnect it so I paused the encryption like it says to do before removing or changing any files on it. I then plugged my drive into a newer laptop I have that operates on Windows 10,. I was prompted for the Bitlocker
Drive Encryption Password screen like normal just like on my Windows 7 laptop so I enter the password and it was correct and it began the encryption process again. When I finished with what I needed to do on the Windows 10 laptop I paused the encryption again
and disconnected the drive. I am now back on my Windows 7 Ultimate OS and plugged the drive in, Bitlocker Encryption Password Screen comes up again and I entered my password but now for some reason it's saying the password is incorrect?  "But It's
not incorrect",is there a reason why this has happen and a way to fix it? My second issue is that I have the recovery key written down on paper but on the fifth line of the eight lines that makes the recovery key I left out a number, did not write it correctly,

After rebooting one of our test machines, bitlocker wanted the recovery key.
There were no hardware modifications on that machine.
Error message in event log:
Bootmgr failed to obtain the bitlocker volume master key from the TPM because the PCRs did not match
Event id 24635, source bitlocker-driver
Each time the machine starts, the recovery key is needed.
Any idea how to solve that issue and why it happens?
Second partition was created manually on that machine. So that's clear that bitlocker reacts...
But now: how can I confirm those changes so that the recovery key is not needed each time we boot?

Answer:Bitlocker enabled drive, recovery key needed during boot, PCS did not match, event id 24635, source bitlocker-driver

I would like to confirm if BitLocker accepts the recovery key?
Please update the BIOS to improve the stability for TPM first.
I also would like to suggest you disable and enable BitLocker again to reset the settings.

Hello and good afternoon, I have a issue where a manager started the Bitlocker process on the SD card in his Surface Pro 3

with Windows 8.1. The Bitlocker attempt failed at 3.4% completed but the SD card ended up being Bitlocked without providing the Bitlocker Recovery Key (I've never seen this happen before). He doesn't know the password for the SD card and of course
I've been tasked to somehow release the encryption so that he can get the required information off of the SD card.

Is there anything that can be done to release the encryption on the SD card or has the SD card been made non-accessible moving forward?

I tried using HP BIOS Flashing utility on my HP Z400 Workstation, and it says it can't continue because I have Bitlocker enabled, but I don't have bitlocker on Win 7 Professional 32bit. I don't see it on the control panel or in context menus. I do see it set to manual in "Services" but the service in not running. Is there a way to find drives Bitlocked or are my drives being treated as bitlocked because of my antivirus program AVG?

Answer:BIOS flash error, BITLOCKER on? No bitlocker installed, Win 7 Pro

In the services window is there and option to disable or turn off...there should be. Just change the startup type from manual to disable and reboot. Then try your BIOS update.

Is there any way to find the identifiers/recovery keys on my laptops so I can document this? Or do I have to decrypt the laptop drives, turn off Bitlocker, and start all over again to generate new identifiers/recovery keys? My only options under Manage Bitlocker are Suspend protection, Back up your recovery key, and Turn off BitLocker.

Hello Edwin, and welcome to Eight Forums.

No worries. If you should ever need to unlock to drive, it'll provide you with a recovery key ID number that you can use to ID which recovery key to use. The tutorial below can give you more details about this to help get an idea if ever needed.

I bought a XFX HD 7850 2GB less than 2 weeks ago and has experienced numerous BSOD all with the same error message "Attempt to reset display driver and recover from time out failed" I've tried various versions of AMD's catalyst driver but it has not resolved my issue. I have not attempted to overclock the GPU, all factory default settings.

The BSOD's are not easily reproducible. So far, it's happened only when I play Skyrim, after maybe 40+ minutes of gaming (but not always, as I've gone longer than that without experiencing the BSOD). What happens is that I would see artifacting on the screen: long, thin, triangles pointing to the center of the screen, when the artifacting occurs there is a GPU temperature spike (it goes to around 66 degrees celcius), and then the BSOD. The first BSOD I experienced, there was no artifacting. I had exited Skyrim and launched FireFox, and was immediately hit with a BSOD with that error message.

Using MSI Afterburner to keep track of the GPU temp, it normally does not go above 60 - 62 degrees celcius during Skyrim (idles at 27 - 30 degrees celcius). I can't reproduce the BSOD using GPU stress testing utilities like Furmark and MSI Kombuster (highest temperature seen is 66 degress celcius).

Driver versions I've used:

1) installed new GPU, uninstalled old nvidia driver, cleaned orphan nividia driver files in safe mode using Driver Sweeper, installed catalyst driver version 13.1. Experienced first BSOD in Skyrim.

Hi there,

I recently recovered from a severe virus and then was uninstalling programs and damaged my hard drive. Dell came and reinstalled a new hard drive with Windows 7 on it. Lost everything (except that during the virus fiasco I saved my important documents online).

Before I start using my computer regularly I would like to protect it properly so that this doesn't happen again.

I have already downloaded Malwarebytes Anti Malware from the link provided on this forum.

What should I download to protect me in real-time and while surfing the internet. I don't want a program that will ask me every two seconds if I will allow it to make changes, etc (Like SpyBot)

Any input would be appreciated. I want to make sure that this doesn't happen again.

Also what is a good way to keep my system backed up when I don't have a disk drive or a flash drive large enough (all I have is a 2GB)

Thanks for your help!

Answer:Brand New OS, recent recover from virus and other hard drive issues, need to protect myself properly this time around

Well you can use the free versions of internet security such as avg, avast, and avira. They are all good proformas and you can also use the paid versions of these programs. You may also look into kaspersky which is what I use for most of my systems. Also get rid of spybot, it had its day but its no longer what it used to be.

On another note if your saying that Dell switched out a hard drive because it was damaged due to the virus damaging it that's actually not possible. Did they say it was a virus or do you assume it was? Also if they said that their was a virus their is no reason to switch out the hard drive.

If you paid for them to come in and do the work I suggest you find out exactly what they did. If they tell you that it was a virus and they you needed to get a new hard drive I suggest that you demand your money back. But if it was under warranty then it doesn't really matter.

Initially I found that BitLocker on the Go supported removable media like flash drives and external drives. Why isn't a CD/DVD supported since it is considered removable media? Will this support be available in future releases?

Answer:Will BitLocker or BitLocker on the Go ever support CD/DVD encryption?

Bitlocker to Go is not supported on CD/DVD. Your suggestion is valuable, I will forward this information to the appropriate department through our internal channel.
Both the Microsoft Product Team and Development Team will take into consideration all suggestions and feedback for future releases.
Currently, you may need third party software to encrypt CD/DVD.

I am trying to enable BitLocker on a Windows 7 Ultimate x32 system with TPM. I follow the Wizard and when asked to encrypt the drive I select 'Run BitLocker system check' and 'Continue' (see attached sreenshot).
The USB is inserted and contains the recovery key (.txt and .tpm). During reboot I get:

Windows BitLocker Drive Encryption Information
The system boot information has changed since BitLocker was enabled.
You must supply a BitLocker recovery password to start this system.
Confirm that the boot changes to this system are authorized.
If the changes to the boot system are trusted, then disable and re-enable
BitLocker. This will reset BitLocker to use the new boot information.

Otherwise, restore the system boot information.

Windows then continues to start normally. After login I get an error message: BitLocker could not be enabled (see attached screenshot).
When I check TMP it shows as active, initialized and owned.

I've started out from scratch several times - same results. I can't figure out what the problem is.
This is driving me nuts.

Any help appreciated

Answer:Bitlocker: BitLocker could not be enabled

Hard drive: System reserved 100MB NTFS, 27.84GB NTFS

Manufacturer name: BRCM
Manufacturer version: 2.10
Specification version: 1.2
Status: The TPM is on and ownership has been taken

I've since modified the group policy settings for Bitlocker to use a PIN.
I am still getting the same results.
I follow the wizard, select check the system, reboot, enter PIN, get the same "error" messages as shown in my previous post.

This makes no sense.

Any help?

Hi all, a while ago I had the idea to start from scratch to clean up the system and gain more performance. But I have not done yet because I have some doubts.

On the PC I have Acronis True Image Home 2011
--> In the part where it says My backups I see the image that I have saved.
--> When I click on "Explore and recover" :To the right I see 2 items to recover: "Reserved for System and Local Disk (C)"
Therefore, the partition (D)will remain intact. Right ? But if I want to restore everything, both partitions, i have to use the option "Files and folders" ?

Extra info : I did not create the image, other person is who created it :P

Answer:Difference between recover partitions or recover files and folders.

How long ago was that Acronis image made?

I guess I don't understand your intent. You talk about starting over to clean up and gain more performance, but then express interest in restoring "everything".

Was that image made at a time when your system was running perfectly? How has your system changed since that date? If you restore, you will have to reinstall any applications you've acquired since the image was made. And that image won't contain any personal data acquired since it was made. Maybe it contains no personal data at all?
If you are going to "start from scratch", I assume you mean you want to do a clean install of Windows.

If you were to do that, the only thing in that image file that might possibly be important to you would be personal files---pictures, videos, mp3s, Word documents, browser bookmarks, possibly email, etc. And that would be personal files as of the date of that image, not your current personal files. And not Windows itself.

If I wanted to "start over", I would:

1: back up all current personal files to some other drive, probably external. I would NOT use an image for this. I'd just copy them with the mouse.

2: reinstall Windows.

If I did those 2 things, the contents of the Acronis image would be irrelevant.

You should forget about Acronis if you don't understand it or know whats in any images you have. Particularly if you didn't make the image yourself. Images can fail you anyway. I'd never rely on them exclusi... Read more

Question: New SSD for X301

Hello everybody,I'd like to replace my factory SSD Samsung with an Intel;I found these : Intel SSDSA1MH160G1 X18-M 1.8"Intel SSDSA1M160G2GN 1.8" Could you tell me which one should be the best solution for X301 2776-LFG manufactured on March 2009? Thanks.

Answer:New SSD for X301

Hey Riddick,
The only SSD that Lenovo says you can have with your X301 is Thinkpad 256GB FDE SSD Part # 43N3417 which I found from a compatibility guide.
The psref for your X301 the link below:
64GB, 80GB, or 128GB Solid State Drive (SSD)
1.8" wide, 8mm high, removable, upgradable, shock mounted storage
So both your choices will fit into your slot but from the reviews you could go ether way but I suggest the first one.

I tried the X301 when it first came out and it was a little sluggish but was on Vista.  The X301 seems to lock up for 10-20 seconds at a time, do not know if it was the processor being over worked or the OEM SSD having problems. The new unit will have the faster 1.6 processor and be running Win7 Pro 64bit which I am betting will be better on Win7 than bloated Vista. It has the 128gb SSD.  I have an Intel 80gb SSD in the drawer.  Which drive will perform better.  With WIN7, Office, and some other software I should still have more than half the 80gb drive free, wuth the Intel 80,  which should provide more than enough head room. Would you pick the Intel 80gb over the OEM 128gb Samsung?  Anyone use this Intel drive in a X301?

Question: X301 and MBR

I am running WinXP-SP3 on a X301. For the first year it was working fine with AHCI mode activated in the BIOS and a SSD SATA 64Gb. However, every now and then I lose the MBR and I have to repair it with XP installation disk. If I deactivate AHCI and use COMPATIBILITY mode, XP works fine but slower. I have tried to update the SSD firmware and the SATA driver for XP but they seem to be updated. I suspect some XP update changed something, because the laptop was working like a charm until now. Question: x301 help

I am currently living in Vancouver, Canada. I purchased a x301 last December, but I have already spent almost 2 months fixing it.  The keys fell off two times. Lenovo mailed me a new keyboard when two keys fell off one month after the purchase. When one key fell off again on the new keyboard, i chose to fix it myself, cuz the whole process just takes too long time.  Then, there is a huge dirt-like pixel appeared on my screen, it took them 3 weeks to get it replaced. But right after the LCD replacement, one corner of the lid cannot be closed tightly. Right now, the two pieces of the lid are kinda separate. The worst thing that really really pisses me off is that the shape of the whole base of the laptop is changing. Normally, if you put your laptop on a table, there are supposed to be four points under each corner to support and stablize your laptop. But for my x301, only three of the four corners are really supporting my laptop and the other corner where my left hand rests barely touches the table. Whenever I put my left hand on it, I can feel that corner sinks down to the table and even make noises when it hits the table.  I tried to call the technical support, but they did not really offer me a real solution for my case. They only asked me to mail it to one of the depot and fix everything for me. But isn't it too abnormal to pay for so much for a laptop and fix it five times within half year? I really do not know what to do. Does anyone know if they... Read more

To be honest, my experience with IBM support is mixed. However once the support is escalated to Lenovo, Ive found that they are quite quick. I had an issue with my laptop, and it was nowhere close to being as frustrating as yours, but lenovo replaced my laptop with the X301. I would recommend that you ask for your case to be escalated to customer service, as it is most likely with technical support. Let me know how you go with this, I can try and find some numbers for you within lenovo if need be.

Yep, per the X301 press release: GPS only available on models with WWAN, but does not require WWAN card to be enabled. Requires user to connect to Internet to use Internet mapping applications, or the user to download GPS software. GPS software not included.  GPS works only with the Verizon or AT&T WWAN.

There doesn't seem to be a 4057-WG5 listed on the Lenovo support website. There is a 4057-WG6 which has a Core 2 Duo SU9400 processor and is 64-bit capable. Does your x301 have the SU9400 processor also? I purchased an X301 with all the max options.  Upon initial powerful the unit blue screened.  Something I have not seen in years.  The machine would never connect to Verizon with the built in WAN card and Lenovo replaced it, still no connection.  The machine will often not power down into a sleep state. I logged 16 calls in 800-IBM-SERVE and opened a dozen cases.  I unloaded and loaded drivers and applications at their direction.  Then they had me reload the machine twice from factory disks. Each by the way takes 2 hours.  I had some tech support and some obvious bad advice.  One even suggested that I might be able to get the WAN card to work by taking my brand new machine to a local "Best BUY".  Finally I was told they think its a bad system board and would like to send another tech... are they kidding???  I had 20 man hours into this machine.  Lenovo agreed to take the machine back. I love the design and the performance when the machine ran was great.  I would like to buy another but am totally hesitant until I hear of others who are using this system with no problem. I would love to hear from anyone who has one of these machinrs working great out-of-the-box... with a built in Verizon WAN card that is.   ***  UPDATE *** The original DOA unit was returned to LEnovo and I am awaiting the refund. I purchased another X301 and the machine works great. Answer:X301: Game GTA IV Help, will it run?

These ultraportable laptops are not meant to run games, if you put everything to minimum in the game setting, it probably would just run at an acceptable pace.

I have recieved a X301 model and it has a place for a sim card under the battery. Does that mean that it has a gsm modem ?I have a data sim card which I use with an external modem. How can I tell ? Or how can I connect via the sim card ?

Go to Solution.

Answer:How can I tell if my X301 has a gsm modem ?

From what I understand the quickest way to check is to look under the keyboard.  The manual shows the position of the WWAN card. All X301's are shipped with the sim card slot and assuming this is a second hand model checking with Lenovo might not be correct as the old owner may have removed the WWAN card.

Answer:Upgrading X301 with a new SSD

PATA is old ide cable.notebooks from t 20 days.everything is sata now.if that a 2008 notebook then sata 150 will be max speed all the way up to T60.only never surport sata 300 and sandy surport 600.a ssd on that old is a waste.for 1 you need win 7.xp wont aligne the files right and it is a B to do that on xp.xp dont surport trim.xp wont detect ssd and set it up proper way.bottom line first you need win 7.then a decent controllers work well.adata has then indilnex barefoot it will say.there some newer jmicron that are not bad but NOTE! you must pick the newer egg has some of them around 75 a few companys make cheap older ssd.dont bother with ocz everyone hates them.adata is good but dont use a sandforce they use too much power and the way they do files wont be of any use to you at all.all the indelnex barefoot are pretty decent they would been ocz first vertix that what you look at but dont bother with ocz.corsar and few of the memeory company like adata all pretty much the same.there a new egg europe site you need a size around 30-64 gigdont bother if your going to stick with xp or a new notebook.

Can any X301 owners confirm if they use or their BIOS provides the option to use Intel's VT? Before I read this slashdot article about Sony locking out the VT feature in some of their laptops, it never occurred to me that manufacturers would actually disable VT-which I would think is a key feature of the processor. A lot of the postings in the Slashdot forums pointed at Lenovo doing the same thing and several postings here did too. I'm about a week away from buying an X301, and now need to know if the X301 supports VT or not. It's definitely a deal-breaker if it doesn't. Below is a transcript of my chat using the little chatnow (or whatever it's called).  I couldn't call tech support because the number he gave me is wrong.  His answer wasn't as clear as I needed. Anoop Basheer: Thank you for choosing Lenovo Chat service, you have reached Anoop. I bought my X301 before they sold them with the Windows 7 Upgrade coupon things and mine came with Vista. I upgraded to 7 when it came out and it never worked very well as the Thinkvantage button never worked and I lost out on some other features.  I have noticed my SSD is having terrible performance now and was curious if I sent it back to Lenovo under the EasyServ if they would install Windows 7 and do all of the BIOS updates?

Go to Solution.

Answer:X301 New OS question

I do not understand your question completely, I am guessing that you bought a OEM/Retail Window 7 and installed it? There is nothing wrong with it, and from the four X301 I have owned, it is much better than IMHO than the lenovo supplied recovery discs.I have both your setup (XP/vista) and have the upgrade discs during that period to upgrade to window 7. The X301 is not under the enhance experience so there would be no difference between normal window 7 and lenovo supplied window 7 recovery discs (for X301). What you may need to do is to download lenovo software update and install all the latest drivers and utility to bring it back to all the features you want. Obviously there is no blue button recovery function so you would need to use window 7 built in backup software to save your system image, burn a CDROM for recovery, and so on. The SSD could be suffering from no garbage collection, have you tried running the TRIM/garbage collection software from the manufacturer? Eg Intel and samsung should have their own tools.

I need a new laptop to replace my old one. The one I had ? had 15.4? screen, a Intel P8400 Core 2 Duo processor, Nvidia Geforce 9600, 4 GB ram, 250 GB hard drive.I only use my laptop at my study (programming) and when I?m away from home more than a day. At home I have a regular PC. I was thinking about getting a smaller lighter laptop ? it should be able to run these programs:Microsoft OfficeEclipse Visual Paradigm Visual Basic SQL Server Adobe PhotoshopAnd have a VGA outletI was looking into the X301 2776 (NRFLEMD) including Intel Core 2 Duo 1.4 GHz (SU9400), 4 GB DDR3 SDRAM, Intel GMA 4500MHD and a 128 GB SSD. But I cannot figure out if I can run the mentioned programs without any problems and some of the at the same time - Anybody knowing about this? Should I go for a more powerful laptop?

Answer:Considering X301 - But it is fast enough?

The X301 will certainly run them. The only time you might have a problem is editing very large files in Photoshop - that will run OK but slowly. Of course you have a home PC for that. The X301 is a great laptop and you won't regret it.

Hi all, I'm thinking of replacing my 128 ssd in x301 with higher performance, higher capacity one (in that particular order). What would be the best option out there , when price is not an objective ? Also I think we need to keep in mind that there is certain limit of performance which can be utilized by x301 infrastructure, or is there ? Does specific design features of x301 may prevent to fully utilize performance of highly advanced ssd ? Thanks for you replies ! Regards !

Answer:Replcaing SSD in X301 with best possible ssd out there

I replaced my Samsung 128gb SSD that came with my X301 with the Intel one and gained a good bit of performance.  The performance was not earth shattering but it was an increase.  I use no more than 40gb on my laptop so the 80gb Intel SSD was more than enough. There are some exotic faster drives out there but they are going to cost ALOT more than what you have now and for only a modest gain in speed.  This is what todays technology offers and not much more.  You will be bumping into the slow speed of the processor on the X301, if not already.

Question: X301 bios

I am not sure but I was told that if the bios is locked and can not unlock it, you have to change the motheboard. Is this true? I work the service desk for a large military organization with purchasing power and bought these X301's and during the life cycle of the laptop, users or technicians have put bios passwords on the bios and now we can not enter them. I have receipts for all the laptops purchased and can prove ownership. Is there another way to unlock this through the technical support team? HP has a process for this so I expect Lenovo does too. If not then the only necessary thing to do is to not buy Lenovo again and stick to HP. End of life for these laptops is quickly approaching and I have been instructed to look for new laptops. If support from Lenovo can not help then I will look elsewhere for the laptops. Thanks in advance.

Hi All I am trying to lower noise on my X301 as the fan when in Bios mode more less always run with 4300 rpm giving a audible hiss. I am running on Windwos XP and have tried to install TPfanccontrol V0.55. When installed I am able to see the various temperatures on the board and the fan speed. However TPfancontrol does not seem to be able to control my fanspeed. As an example when in manual mode the fan will run at 4300 rpm for all levels between 1 and 7... only level 0 will give a change to 0 RPM. When I switch to smart mode the FAN is always off eventhough it should run levels between 1-5 according to the INI. file. Does the program conflict with any Thinvantage programs I have most thinkvantage running in latest version such as Power manager? Do I need to  do anything in the BIOS? Any help or experience with TPfancontrol on X301 will be highly appriciated  How did you install? How is your INI file? Regards Moderator Note; it would be helpfull if you could please update your profile with your correct country location as per the forum rules. I've a Lenovo ThinkPad X301 (2776-P6U). Apparently It has a DVD-RAM UJ-844. I need to know its specifications in order to burn some DVD (Dual Layer etc.). Been holding off and counting the days until August 26th so that I can order a fully decked out X301. But I go to order one today and I see that the Blu-ray drive is not an option like it was rumored to be... A quick call to Lenovo confirmed this. Crap. I do alot of traveling and I need a portable workhorse that can keep me entertained on the road...since my DVD collection has gone blu-ray, it makes no sense for me to buy a laptop without a blu-ray drive. You would think that a company's top of the line portable laptop would offer top of the line parts.  Dear Lenovo, Give us a bluray option!!!

Answer:X301 - Well This Really Sucks :(

Stangs555, welcome to the forum, I can understand your dissapointment, however I believe this is a factor influenced by physical dimensions. The first Notebook Blu-ray drives were 12.5mm (Ultrabay Enhanced R-Series), then a while ago we got the 9.5mm (Ultrabay Slim T-Series) and to my knowledge no one has, (as yet), manufactured a 7.5mm Blu-ray drive which would be required for the X3** ThinkPads. How long will you have to wait? Sorry, absolutely no idea A possible compromise would be the T400.

Hi forum!  Does anyone know whether there is a 1.8" standard (not SSD) harddisk available that fits into the X300/X301? The HMM for the X300 (at least a former revision) lists a "MicroSATA hard disk drive", FRU 42T1321, but I cannot find any useful informations about this FRU. I also searched the websites of HGST, Seagate and so on but none of them seems to offer such a drive. I don't necessarily need an official Lenovo FRU/option since I need it for a special test project where it doesn't really matter if the drive is officially supported or not. Unfortunately I cannot even find any unsupported (read: 3rd party) 1.8" SATA harddisks. Thanks in advance!Message Edited by OldDeuteronomy on 11-06-2008 11:55 AM

Answer:Any 1.8" HDD (not SSD) for X300/X301?

1.8" 80GB SATA HD: If it is going to fit I don't know. I guess you have to try that out yourself. (Drive also seems to be very slow with 5400rpm and 15ms access time).

Question: x301 no soundI

I'm using an X301 with a remote flat panel connected by VGA but I can't get any sound either from the speakers or the headphone jack. When I open the volume control in Control panel it says the sound is working and I can see the green indicator moving up and down - but no noise! Next I tried disconnecting everything and can listen to a CD (I played it using WINDVD) - but when i try to control the volume using the sound mixed (from the icon in the program tray) it does not work - the music kept playing regardless of how i moved the volume control. Next I reconnected the VGA/screen and tried to play the CD again - this time nothing. (I run the laptop with the lid closed but it doesnt seem to makee any difference if I open it). Any help please?

Answer:x301 no soundI

Go into control panel, under sound, what is the main playback sound device selected?

Hello! I have an X301 here that suddenly lost its WAN adapter (Vodafone UMTS, SIM card installed). The colleague says it worked a few days ago and suddenly after a trip it was gone. I donīt know what is messed up. I can only see that the entire adapter is missing in the Windows XP network overview. There I can see the LAN Gigabit adapter, the WLAN adapter but no WAN adapter. I checked the hardware button at the back of the device, itīs enabled. I checked BIOS but couldnīt finde a specific WAN adapter setting. There WLAN is enabled. What could have happened? kind regards, Jan

Answer:X301: WAN adapter gone

Hi and welcome to the forum!
Is it turned on via hotkey combination Fn+F5?
Try reseating the card too, the instructions can be found and viewed in the HMM and lenovo service videos website, respectively.
