x220 fingerprint software issue

Question: x220 fingerprint software issue

Hi, everybody! I have I strange problem. My ThinkVantage Fingerprint Software was working fine a few days ago until I had to uninstall the software. I had to uninstall it because my x200 had a motherboard problem and went to service. Meanwhile I used the HDD with another notebook. That's why I had to remove the fingerprint software. I got my x220 back and I tried to install the fingerprint (along with all other software and drivers) software, but I'm getting this message and the installation stops: You have currently installed another version of fingerprint software. Please, uninstall your existing software before running this installation. Actually, there's no sign left from the fingerprint software. I removed it via the Programs and Features menu, I entered BIOS, removed all the fingerprint data from the new motherboard (although I believe that was not quite necessary since it's a brand-new motherboard). All other drivers and software installed fine, without any problem. Has someone else encountered a similar problem? I'd appreciate it very much if you help me somehow. Thanks!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Well... I finally succeed finding the driver... on the lenovo web site. I used the html page name (the one that don't exists anymore), that is "ufma-64bit" and the word "authentec" and google give me the lenovo page. I can't make a copy/paste as I'm not on the right computer, but it's:http://support.lenovo.com/fr/en/downloads/ds030585 file name is "Authentec TrueSuite Fingerprint Software for 64-bits Windows" - in fact windows 7 and it works on the X220 tablet thanksjdanield

After the Fingerprint software was updated it will not start because of TrueSuite engine failure.   Has anyone had this problem or have a solution.

Hello, I have a ThinkPad X220, Win7 64. My fingerprint scanner works fine in predesktop verification, but the last three days I get an error when it is supposed to log unto Win7. The error says 0xe7210005 INternal Error (rpnp2: no-svr(00000001provmgrserver)). I have to enter the password to log on. I have reinstalled the fingerprint software - no change. As the predesktop scan works, I gather that the HW and the fingerprint database are ok. While I was handling this I tried to run a system update. Here the Think Vantage System Update software starts up and then stalls. I have this with the last version (5.0.3) that I downloaded as well as with a version 4 that came with the machine. Has anybody got an idea (beside reinstalling the OS)? Many thanks Rolf

Answer:X220 Software fail: System Update and Fingerprint

The fingerprint error means that something is blocking some internal fingerprint software process.  Did you install any new anti-virus software, or maybe some firewall software, in the last three days since you started to have this problem?

I am not sure what could be causing the System Update problem.

HiJust got my X220 and overall very happy with it I've noticed that i can set fingerprint scans for: - windows password + to poweron notebook- windows password only I was really hoping to setup a fingerprint scan just for the BIOS loading stage and then no need for any further scans (ie bypassing windows scan/password). Does anyone know how to do this? (if at all possible) Cheers

Answer:X220 fingerprint reader...possible to have BIOS startup fingerprint?

Odd that would not be an option listed.  Maybe required additional programming to have that option setup.  Maybe that's a feature Lenovo could release in a future BIOS update or software update since it would be an option I would probably use.  I personally did not get the fingerprint reader on my X220 because I didn't feel I would use it haha but it is a nifty feature. ~Novak

Hi all, The subject. Windows Log-in time takes too much time. Vefore it was like: Swipe finger - x220 starts - automatically goes through HDD and Master Password authorization - Windows starts - Fingerprint software starts - Automatically logs me in to the system- another 3-5 seconds until all software loads completely and I can start to work. Now it is like: Swipe finger - x220 starts - automatically goes through HDD and Master Password authorization - Windows starts - Fingerprint Software starts (5-6 sec longer than before) - Process of authorization (another 4-5 secs) - Login screen disappears and gray screen appears instead (another 4-5 secs) - Blank windows desktop (2-3 secs) - Another 3-5 secsonds until all software loads completely and I can start to work. Before it was very quick, probably 8 seconds from Fingerprint software start and to complete software load. I have SSD installed and it's S.M.A.R.T. is OK. I have tried to uninstall Fingerprint reader software and driver and start windows conventionally using my password. I have got my 8 seconds form Login screen to ready, so i assume the problem is in Fingerprint reader. What can I do? Thanks in advance.

Answer:Probably Fingerprint Reader Issue. Windows Log-in takes too long. Windows Home Pro x64. X220 i7

I checked it here on some test systems and I'm not seeing any delay like that.  On my systems, it's like your "before" scenario.

I'm not really following what you are saying with the "after" scenario, especially the parts about the gray screen and blank windows desktop.  So can you take a video of the complete boot and post it?  Maybe it will help me understand what is happening.

If you can remember when this started happening, look in Control Panel -> Programs and Features and sort by install date.  See if you can find a software install/update that happened around the time you first noticed this problem.  I would be especially suspicious about anti-virus and security software.  And make sure you don't have RapidBoot installed on your system.   http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/documents/ht075364

The fingerprint software (ThinkVantage Fingerprint Software) hasn't been updated in more than a year, so I don't think fingerprint software itself is causing this.  Probably it is interference from another application.

I now have a dual-boot Win7/Win10 P70.

After being very impressed yesterday with the fingerprint login functionallity in both Win7 and Win10 using the new fingerprint sensor on the P70, I was suriprised today when I rebooted the machine wo Win10 after having been off all night and the fingerprint option icon had simply disappeared from the Welcome screen.  Yesterday I had gone through the enrollment process in both Win7 and Win10, and everything seemed to be working perfectly. But today after starting the machine after haivng been powered off for many hours, it just disappeared from Win10.

I then repeated the Win10 enrollment (I think this is part of Windows Hello functionality), and sure enough it was now back again and seemingly working fine.

I then had to go back to Win7 to check something, and was surprised to find that even though the fingerprint icon was offered to me and I selected it, while Windows was now waiting for me to put my finger on the sensor the sensor itself was not active!  So I instead logged into Win7 via passwword and repeated the Win7 enrollment which I'd done yesterday.  And once again, everything now seemed to work fine across several re-boot tests to Win7.  I then stayed in Win7 to do what I had originally gone there to do.

Well, now I re-booted back to Win10, where just a while ago that third login icon for fingerprint had been present on the Welcome screen, and now it's once again gone!!  Disapp... Read more

Answer:P70 fingerprint software issue

Well that's great.  Since the fingerprint login icon for Win10 had disappeared on me, I decided to go ahead and re-enroll for the third time.  I got into Settings and then pushed the "remove" button for my fingerprint, and then pushed the "add another" button to start the process again.  That's how I had done it each of the two previous enrollments.

The dialog started, I entered my PIN, and then it asked me to scan my finger.  I put my finger on the sensor, and instead of registering it and moving on to asking me for the additional scans, Windows Hello apparently broke!

I've tried this five times now, including rebooting in between, but to no avail.  I guess something corrupted in the Registry now and I'll have to research how to "clean house" so that I can start over.

Grrr... and things were going swimmingly with my Win10 learning experience.

Z61P 9452-J6G Dear friends, I cannot login any longer on my Z61p since I upgrade the fingerprint reader software to the last version. I had a look at the 47 psts linked to fingerprint keyword but I have found nothing related to the problem below. After restart, the fingerprint software starts automatically and request to "enroll" the user. I did "enroll" my current user meaning scanning fingerprints and associating the fingerprints with the Windows password. Every time I start the computer, the enrollment software always starts automatically.I cannot enroll again with same user (passport name <current user> cannot be used with same passport)I cannot change the user (fields with user name and domain are greyer)I did tried to use another local user. Purchased my computer in July 2012. Fingerprint reader and BioExcess were working fine. Nothing special was changed on my PC except installing normal packaged software from other vendors. Sevearl days ago the fingerprint reader stopped reading. Swiping does not do anyting. I do not get an error message or an indication that the swipe did not work or anything like that. It just does nothing. I cannot open the BioExcess software program. Since I cannot swipe, I cannot open it that way. When I try to access the BioExcess software by using my password, the program "dings" but does not open. I do not get any error message. I only get an error message if I intentionally enter the wrong password.Otherwise the program "dings" and teh dialog box disappears. Please help.

Hello to all.I am a..somewhat happy fresh owner of a X220, model 4287-2SG,in short Core I5, Ultrabase, IPS display, TPM & fingerprint. The ram size is 8GB. I did not have any fan or whining issues as a lot of people here, but... the fingerprint is somewhat dead. It appears ok in device manager, the Thinkvantage diagnostics show the usb (connection?) to it ok. The problem is that I cannot enroll any fingerprints. The FP worked ok fora while, but after that...it wouldn't be recognized at boot, or in windows(the green light won't turn on when I was suppose to scan my finger. The curios thing is that at that time, the bios authentication by fingerprint and also power on worked ok. At this moment, windows sees the upek device ok, any usb monitoring utilities show it as connected to the usb port, but the lenovo fingerprint software always gives the error(s):"can't enroll user; can't find fingerprint device". As troubleshooting I did the following:a) restore the factory image and then all win updates;b) used UPEK diagnostic software (TCSDiagnosticTest21.zip ) from http://www.upek.com/support/downloads/tools/diagnostic.asp which returned code/error 70 - device is not calibrated;c) I've contacted UPEK support and they sent me another diagnostic tool which worked once or twice, and then gave a similar error: "Cannot calibrate fingerprint device - Illegal argument"; they said it's a hardware problem and that I should contact lenovo;d) "mounted" the usb device in an vmware ... Dear all, I have just taken delivery of a nice used X220 (R9E1L51) but was disappointed to find it didn't have a fingerprint reader - I should have read the add more carefully In every other respect it is great. Can I buy a palmrest with fingerprint reader and simply fit it? Thanks

Answer:Adding fingerprint reader to X220

buying the palmrest with FPR would be the most straight forward way of adding this feature. Also, the FPR on the X220 can has the feature where one swipe of the fingerprint can start the laptop and boot directly into windows. Secure and fast way of login. I love my FPR on the X220 and X230.

Hello, I just received an X220 configured with the Intel 320 series SSD. This SSD provides AES-128 hardware encryption using the ATA password supplied by the BIOS as the encryption key. I have configured the ThinkPad using Lenovo's ThinkVantage Fingerprint software to use my fingerprint on power-up. This unlocks the disk and also logs me into Windows, and it's working fine. However, I'm concerned about the security of this solution. According to Intel, the AES encryption on the SSD is fairly secure since the encryption key (i.e., the ATA password) is stored as a hash on the disk, so it's not possible to revert the encryption without knowing (or brute-forcing) the password. This is all fine, but with my fingerprint alone being able to unlock the SSD, the password must also be stored somewhere by the ThinkPad BIOS in order for the BIOS to be able to pass it on to the SSD. My question is how the BIOS accomplishes this. Hopefully, it uses the built-in TPM or something similar to store the key, because otherwise the SSD encryption is somewhat pointless. How secure is the solution? Is there any way to make the BIOS 'forget' the ATA password so I have to supply it manually? Regards, Anders

Answer:X220 power-up fingerprint and ATA password

The X220 fingerprint reader includes a companion chip (Authentec TCD50) which is responsible for storing and retrieving the fingerprint template and password for the purpose of preboot authentication.  The only way to attack it is by defeating the fingerprint template matching algorithm within the chip itself.  I don't know the details about how the template/password storage is implemented within the chip.

As for unlinking your fingerprint from your HDD password, you can do this in the fingerprint software.  At the main screen that shows which fingers are enrolled, there is a row of checkboxes to specify which fingers support power-on authentication.  This would be checked by default, so if you don't want to use your finger for BIOS/HDD passwords then simply uncheck that box.

Hi,i really like the fingerprint reader - power on function but i wonder how high the power consumption is?Does it stress my battery noticeable  when i don`t use the Notebook for few days? Thank you and excuse my english

Answer:X220 Fingerprint Reader Counsumption

After my X220 is powered off for 24 hours (but fingerprint reader still active), the power meter says about 6% of the battery capacity was consumed (6 cell battery). This means that with the laptop powered off, the fingerprint reader might completely drain a 6 cell battery after 2-3 weeks. I discovered that after power off (or hibernate), if I briefly pull and reinsert the battery, it seems to completely turn off the fingerprint reader including the LED. When the X220 is turned on the next day, the power meter stays the same. This seems to be a possible workaround. I suggest doing it if you plan to leave your X220 powered off for more than a couple of days. I hope that Lenovo can fix it to make the fingerprint reader active only while the screen lid is open. There is no reason to leave the fingerprint reader on while the lid is closed. Or turn on the fingerprint reader only for one minute after opening the screen lid. That would preserve battery life even if you leave the lid open.

Hi, I posted this late last year & got no replies. It is quite irritating because it causes the boot-up to be prolonged whilst the system tells me that the (non-existent) fingerprint device cannot be accessed. I bought a Lenovo M58p Tower system (type: 9965-A3G) which comes as standard with a simple keyboard without a fingerprint scanner device. I downgraded from the supplied Vista to XP Pro using the supplied downgrade discs. In the control panel I have a 'Fingerprint Sensor' icon which of course does nothing when clicked on apart from produce an error message: 'Fingerprint sensor device communication error' for fairly obvious reasons (there is no sensor). Also on boot-up/shutdown the system complains that it cannot access the fingerprint device. Has anyone any idea why the software is installed for the fingerprint device when it doesn't exist on this model & is it safe to simply uninstall the fingerprint software using the XP control panel 'Add or Remove' facility? Does anything else need changing software or BIOS wise? Cheers

Answer:Can I remove Fingerprint software on non-fingerprint device tower PC?

Yes you can remove it, the system must have been prepared for a machine that was originally suppose to ship with a keyboard that has the FPR installed.

Hi everyone, this is my first post/question.  I am hoping someone can tell me that it is possible to add on the fingerprint reader that was optional at the time of purchase of my X220 Convertible Laptop/Tablet.  I foolishly assumed (as I've never needed/wanted one before) that I had no use for the fingerprint reader.  It occurs to me, however, after many logins at the windows screen, every single time the computer comes back from sleep, that it would be very useful and convenient.  I am regretting having decided not to get it (it was only $20, so it was really stupid not to).Any information would be helpful, but if adding the reader is possible, a part number would be great.  I appreciate any help you may be able to give me, and thank you for reading, and especially if you reply!Peter

Answer:Wish to get X220 Convertible Tablet Fingerprint Reader

I have no idea if it can be done or not.  My advice would be to call Lenovo directly and ask them.  It may be that it can be added, but not by the end user, because it looks like the bottom piece of plastic on the screen would need to be changed and I doubt that is considered to be a user serviceable part.  So, even if it can be done, you might have to take it to a Lenovo service center to get it done.  If I were you I wouldn't kick myself that much if you are only worried about windows logins.  The primary reason I got mine was to use as an access point to an eWallet type program that contains credit cards, passwords, etc.  There is a program that ships with the machine that is supposed to work for finger swipe type web site logins.  However, I have some concerns.  I haven't been able to find any good documentation on it for things like exporting the data to be used by another program, transferred to a new computer, or just exported to text to go back to the old way of typing things in.  I just don't want to get locked into a specific program and if I can't export everything to at least text, it means that I will need to keep copies of everything somewhere else, which kind of defeats half of the purpose.  Anyway, I hope things work out for you and that others respond.

Hello,I've just bought my new tablet and, overall, I a very impressed with its features. One feature I thought was particularly cool was the fingerprint reader to log on. Sadly, the software didn't come with laptop and, when searching "fingerprint" in Start and scanning over the control panel, it was not there. I have read most of the discussios here concerning my problem, but found no answers and searched everywhere suggested. I then installed the driver from the lenovo site and got as far as the screen with a hand to register one of your fingerprints, clicked the thumb icon and it said that there was no such device detected on my laptop. I was hoping to get it working soon but if I can't find a solution it doesn't matter - It's not absolutely essential/urgent. I was just a little disappointed that the device did not work. Thanks in advance for any help, Doug.

Answer:Fingerprint reader on new thinkpad tablet X220 "not detected"

hey DB-1618,welcome to the forums and for this, could you check at Device Manager and see if the fingerprint device is listed in it? It should be under biometrics.if it is there, uninstall it and then let windows install its generic drivers. restart your unit and reinstall the software which you got from the Lenovo Support Site

I just reinstalled Windows with the factory recovery disks and then updated all the drivers. Regardless of what I do I'm not able to disable the fingerprint reader. When the machine is shutdown or in standby, the green light comes on and it accepts anyone's finger swipe to turn on. I have disabled the device in Windows, disabled the device in the BIOS (!!!) and removed the Lenovo fingerprint software to no avail. I would very much appreciate some help on how to fix this.

I just received a new x220 tablet, and the fingerprint reader is not working. As far as I can tell, it has never worked. It does not show up in the bios, and it does not show up in the Windows device manager. It is as if the hardware is not there. Is this a hardware defect? Has anyone else experienced this type of issue?

Answer:x220 tablet fingerprint reader not detected in bios or Windows

It is hard to diagnose from across the country, but there are 3 parts involved - the fingerprint device itself, the cable and the USB hub circuitry on the motherboard. (fingerprint connects as a USB device) You might try to upgrade the BIOS to the latest.   If you have a warranty, use it. If you bought with no warranty, all you can do is check for an unplugged cable and start swapping parts, but don't open it up if there is a warranty. You could turn an expensive repair into being your problem.

Hey there Lenovo team. Thanks for the great product. I am having one heck of a time with my fingerprint reader on my brand new X220 Tablet.  After successfully registering the fingerprint, I was able to power on using the reader but the login screen does... nothing.  The "Swipe on the green..." never goes away but the finger reader indicator light does do it's blinking (as if it had a good read). Just ot make sure I am clear, the system powers on fine but does not login in using the fingerprint, there is no response from the OS.  I am able to use my password to login fine. I am on Win7 x64 SP1 with _all_ the latest installs and drivers for both Windows and System Update (Lenovo).  Any thoughts?  I have uninstalled, reinstalled, etc etc... but nothing seems to work for me. I'd be less confused (and more certain of a hardware fault) if the fingerprint registration failed! Last thought is that I transferred my settings over from a Lenovo X200 Tablet (Win 7 SP1 x86) using Windows Easy Transfer.  Perhaps a registry setting came over that screwed the pooch?  Please... help! Thank you! Moderator edit: Matched subject to content.

I am having 4 issues right now:

-Backlight bleeding (lots of it)
-Fingerprint reader wont turn off when laptop is off. (im using UEFI, option in settings is missing)

but mainly

-CPU THROTTLING even when in high performance mode
-65W adapter gets VERY HOT

I called lenovo tech support. They make it sound like it's just me. They are also NOT willing to replace it with a 90W adapter.

I am very dissapointed and will likely be returning this unless someone from lenovo helps fix my issues...

Answer:X220 Many problems: backlight bleeding, fingerprint throttling, hot 65 watt adapter.

Have you tried updating the BIOS? There's some fixes for throttling in recent revisions. The fingerprint reader is intentionally on; it's a swipe-to-power-on feature. IIRC, you can disable this in the ThinkVantage Fingerprint tool.A hot 65W adapter sounds like a strange issue though. Does it get hot all the time or only when charging the battery?

Hey all, sorry if this has been answered. If it has I haven't seen it. Is there a way to set the BIOS to only bot via a successful fingerprint swipe? this seems like such a better way of doing things. I am interested in security, but only so interested that i can swipe a reader instead of hitting a button; putting in a password every time and that is way too much effort for me. But when I swipe an unregistered finger, the computer stays off. When I swipe a registered finger, it turns on. Thats awesome. Now how can I make it so I ONLY can turn it on that way instead of just pressing the power button?

Answer:how to configure X220 to ignore power button and only boot via fingerprint reader?

welcome to the forum!

short of physically modifying your keyboard, it's not possible.   if for some reason the FPR were to fail or fail to read a configured finger then there would be no way to turn the system on.

the system is no more or less secure with an enabled or disabled power button.   anyone who really wants your data and actually knows what they're doing doesn't need a working power button to get it.

Hi. I upgraded the above software  3 days ago to ver 5.8.6.6874. The fingerprint reader now is not recognized by ThinkVantage applications - Password Manager etc. Do I need to roll this update back and can this be done? I have one other query. My T61 sits in a port replicator most of the time. If there is a power outage the whole thing freezes and needs to be hard booted. I would have thought it would switch to battery without this problem. Any ideas? Thanks

try re update the bios firmware with the previous version. When you say freeze, do you mean it doesn't respond to external keyboard and mouse command?

I am asking about X220 4286 systems with Win7 x64/8GB Ram and fingerprint readers. Users whose privileges include power-on and hard disk authentication by fingerprints cannot get the FP reader to accept their fingerprints at startup, but when they reach the login window the FP reader immediately accepts the same fingerprint. This generates quite a few complaints and requires users to remember yet another long password which gets reset frequently. Does anyone know why this happens? Is it possible to make the power-on fingerprint setting "convenient level"? Thanks.

Answer:X220 Power-on fingerprint reader problems - can FP reader be set to convenient level at startup?

I've experienced such problem. It's a bug with older BIOS. Whatever I do, to re-entry all the fingerprints, to erase the TPM and Fingerprint Reader, none working. But after update to the 1.19 version BIOS, the problem is gone.Hope this helps, same configuration here. P.S. if update makes no differece, try erase the FPR (TPM erase is not nessesary)

System Update has just run on my T43p and updated the fingerprint software to 5.8.4.  Now I have no option to log on using the fingerprint reader and, when I try to access my passwords, I get a message that I have no fingerprints stored.  Clicking OK gives me the 0xe7210005 error. Has anyone any ideas how one restores things - everything was working fine before the update!  and, if I open the Fingerprint sensor on the Control Panel (Fingerprint Reader Info Panel), I can see the fingerprint being read. The text with the new software says I need version 5.6.2 of the Fingerprint Reader before the upgrade to the above 5.8.4 - but what is this.  Is this an earlier version of the fingerprint software or is it to do with the control panel?  I have found something called fpr56console_x86.exe - is this something I should install (the Fingerprint Reader Info Panel has a Device Version: 4.1.529) Many thanks

Not at all sure this is a Lenovo X220 issue (win 7- 64bit), but I'm having the following problem with my 1tb WD My Passport Essential SE USB 3.0 external drive: It works fine when plugged into the USB 3.0 port.  However, if I safely eject it, and use it in a USB 2.0 port, it will not be recognized if I go back to the USB 3.0 port.  I can usely get it working again in USB 3.0 mode if I reboot. (I have two of these external drives, and the behavior is identical for both of them). I've tried lots of different things, but still can't solve this issue.  Are there any newer USB 3.0 drivers for Windows 7, or for the X220, that I should be installing?  The only one I see for USB 3.0 on the Lenovo site is for the Nec controller. Again - not saying this is a Lenovo issue, but I don't have another computer with USB 3.0, so I was hoping people might be able to tell me about their experience with USB 3.0 and the X220.  Thank you.

I updated the USB 3 drivers from Lenovo - even tried a later version from Renesas, but no resolution of the issue. Would be interested if anyone else out there is running USB 3 external drives in their X220 - if so, have you ever used the same drive in a USB 2 port? Thanks.

Dear all, first of all, I'd like to announce that im very pleased with my X220, but lately I've had a problem...I bought the PC because of the utterly nuts battery, obviously I got the 9-cell... Battery condition is: GOOD Full charge: 83.76Wh This sounds relatively acceptable, right? But no matter what these days when im on the battery, it claims that im doing 2A or more... However, this time, it claimed 3A... So be it, its 'very realistic' that idle my laptop uses 36W riiiiight..... But thats not entirely it... I was cooking and watching telly, LESS than 40 min, it went from 95% to 5%.... Thats 90% of 83,76 = 75,384W in 40 min, bringing the power consumption to 113,076W.... IDLEThats more than my workstation uses when idling, and isnt realistic.... What the heck can be wrong? Any suggestions? Cheers,Marc

Answer:Faulty battery or software? X220

That sounds like one or more bad cells in that battery of yours, not like a software issue.

Did you follow the Installation Instructions on that page? Many people just download and run a driver package, and do not realize that the setup files are unpackedto a directory on the hard drive, usually c:\drivers, and thenyou must run the setup. A two step process. You may have done that, but just checking. EDIT: HERE is the driver matrix for your laptop.Since you have a DOS version, maybe some driver was missed, possibly Chipset driver, or System Inteface driver.

Actually I have uninstalled the fingerprint software. But installing the "old" driver brought no change. After my T500 W7-64 upgrade I have had lots of problems getting the fingerprint software to work, either it didn't recognize the sensor or wouldn't enroll or always asked for a password, etc., etc.   I think I've found the answer, and that is that there are two different versions of the Lenovo stuff on their site, one under the "driver matrix" (v3.3.0.56), and another after searching for "client security" and finding v5.9.2.  Here is the URL for the newer version: http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?sitestyle=lenovo&lndocid=MIGR-73585 I don't know why there are two different ones, both are supposed to be for W7-64, but the V5.9.2 one is the one that worked.  I also reinstalled the Authentec drivers just to start with a clean slate.   I've noticed lots of fingerprint-related comments on here, maybe this will clear something up for somebody.

Answer:Fingerprint Software confusion

The reason why there are two different kind of software for the fingerprint reader is because there are two different manufacturers that provide the fingerprint sensor for the Lenovo models. The older models T60, T61, X61 and older have the UPEK fingerprint sensor. Then Lenovo started using the fingerprint sensor from Authentec for newer models like T500, W500, T400 before they switched back to UPEK again for the latest models like T510, W510, T410 and several others. The trick is to read under "Supported system" and see if your models is listed there. If not then the software is not for your computer. If you read under supported systems it should be pretty clear. Also if you go to the driver download from lenovo and select your computer/model/OS you should get a list for drivers for your model/OS only and then you would only see the correct fingerprint software listed. By the way, the link you provided is for the UPEK system and the W500 got the AuthenTec fingerprint sensor as clearly stated. The correct software for the W500 is this one:http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?sitestyle=lenovo&lndocid=MIGR-73674 If it's working on your system after installing the UPEK fingerprint sensor software you must have some leftovers from the other installation since the UPEK driver will not work for the AuthenTec sensor. If you check device manager and look at the fingerprint sensor you should see what brand it is and will say "Authentec". The link you ... Read more

On my T61, in C:\Program Files\ThinkVantage Fingerprint System Software there are these exe files: ctlcntrenrollbtnlauncherlaunchtestartmuitpminitw I can't find the path to any of these in the msconfig Startup tab, so which one(s) should I disable?  Do I simply rename it in this folder, like enrollbtn.bak?

Hello, everyone!I have a TravelMate P246M-MG notebook with Win7 x64 OS, and I want to use the fingerprint sensor. However, I only have the driver (EgisTec Fingerprint Sensor 3.2.13.0), which came on the CD with the notebook. But software is nowhere. Where could I get Acer BioProtection or any other? I thought it is available for all Acer notebooks, but I checked at acer.com > Support > Drivers and Manuals, and it is not there (only the driver). Thanks in advance!

Hello, here are some with new fingerprint software, build 3221. I have a Satellite U200 and there is still only build 2934 to download - and that obviously doesnt work with IE 7... Where can I find the new one?

Answer:New fingerprint reader software?

According to the European Toshiba driver page at this time the 5.4.0-2934 is the newest version of the Fingerprint Software.
It was released at 12/01/07

But on the US Toshiba page I have found another new version. Please check this thread and check the recommended links!!!

Typically you would have a Thinkvantage folder.  In it you will see Lenovo Fingerprint Sofware.  There you can enroll your digits. If you have problem enrolling you cac clear out the fingerprint stored memory option in the BIOS.  F1 at bootup. Best of Luck, Mark Message Edited by aselgat on 11-03-2008 11:01 AM

Hello everyone.  I'm looking at purchasing the L540 and am curious to know if the fingerprint sensor can be configured via Lenovo software to be the ONLY way to login for Windows.  In other words, I don't want the possibility of someone choosing to enter a password instead of scanning their finger.   Does anyone know if this is possible?  Thanks in advance for your help!

Answer:L540 Fingerprint Software

Hi Sascofin,

Welcome to Lenovo Community!

As per your query we understood that you are looking for Fingerprint Reader setting on your ThinkPad L540.

I regret to inform you that there is no such setting on Fingerprint Reader, to configure the fingerprint reader by default the application will prompt you to create Windows password before proceeding on the setting.

Below is the link which will guide you on how to configure fingerprint reader.

Click here to visit the web-page.

Hope this helps.

Best regards,

Hemanth Kumar

So Im looking all over for this thing. I found the drivers from UTEKs website which are fine but no software. Then I found the software for the SL series (for Windows 7 64bit), it launches, but when I get to the recognition setup it bombs.  So where do I get Win7 64bit fingerprint software and drivers for my new Edge E520?? Thanks!

Answer:E520 Fingerprint Software?

I think you can have Windows set up the biometric device instead of the Lenovo software.

The device was recognized and the drivers installed the first time. It was functioning until I rebooted ... it comes up on the login screen and recognized my fingerprint, but the "console" whatever its called does not come up in the tool bar and I can't start it from the programs menu. All the files are there and in tact.

I uninstalled and reinstalled -- again, worked first time until the first reboot OR logoff and login again.

I see others have seen this problem. Anyone get a resolution?

We're going to be rolling out Windows 7 on T520s (and L520s and W520s) and management doesn't want them using the fingerprint reader. But we'd like to have the drivers in place so that windows doesn't squawk about missing drivers. I realize it doesn't happen near as often in Win7 as it did in XP, but we'd still like it clean. We get the drivers when we install the software, but is there a way to install the drivers without installing the software? Thanks.

Answer:Fingerprint driver WITHOUT the software

Why not disable the fingerprint reader in BIOS?You can do that via BIOS -> Security -> I/O Ports -> Fingerprint reader -> Disable

Answer:R52 Fingerprint Software Problem

Well, I just ran into the same problem today with my T43p Laptop. Did some research on "Levono Support Page" and it turns out that the "SYSTEM UPDATE" from ThinkVantage has a problem in its matrix, which pointing to Fingerprint 5.8 Release (Funny thing is: I don't think that software is ready for release). That's Levono for yah. I tried to tell IBM not to sell it to Levono. Solution: Remove "ThinkVantage Fingerprint 5.8.xxxx" software from your computer using Control Panel -- Add/Remove Programs. (May need restart your Windows XP, don't know if you have to or not)Obtain and download the latest version of ThinkVantage Fingerprint software (mine was 5.6.2.xxx) posted on Levono Support website for your laptop model & type.Install the .exe that you just downloaded.Restart your windows.Done ...Hope things goes well for you!-Thien

I don't mean using it to log in -- I mean just using it to view fingerprints.

My laptop has one of those built-in fingerprint scanners. I used to use it to log in, but I upgraded to Windows 7 once it came out and didn't bother to find the driver. I don't really want to use it to log in, but if I can use it to scan my fingerprints and just see what they look like, it might be kind of cool.

Anyone know of any programs that would let me do this?

Ok so I have a T61 thinkpad running XP Professional and my problem is that everytime I choose to login manually and surpass the actual fingerprint login screen I get an error before it allows me to type in my password. The error says at the top of the window: Fingerprint Software Error then in the box it says Cannot logon to this passport.  An internal error has occurred (object: clsid-not-found(CID_Bio::Gui::CssObserver_Creator)).  After that I have two options to click ok or details and when I click details it there are two columns the first says "code" and under it "0xe7210001" then the second column is"Description" and under it says the same this as before in the main window "Cannot logon to this passport......." I think it might be just something wrong with my registry for some reason but also when I attempt to install the thinkpad updates the fingerprint software option is always there so I believe its simply not installing. Please help with any information pertaining to the problem I cannot seem to find any information on this.  Thanks in advanced

Answer:T61 Fingerprint Software Error

I hava a T61 thinkpad running Vista Business and get pretty much the similar error. At every boot I get the following error screens and I can not even choose to login with my fingerprint. http://666kb.com/i/b3edkj5whcu9g0tiq.png After trying to click the error messages away (the one at the bottom pops-up again and again, after clicking OK) I can log in manually but my fingerprint scanner does not work at all. When browsing and awaiting the fingerprint request there is also an error message arising (translated to English it says: "For the requested operation a fingerprint authentication is needed, but the device is not installed. Checkif the device is plugged-in/connected and repeat the operation" ) http://666kb.com/i/b3ed5gehvb17kn1wy.png This I do not understand, since I never have deinstalled any Lenovo software in order to avoid such problems. In the device manager everything looks ok (I already deactivated and activated the fingerprint scanner, but with no affect) I just rechecked TVSU too, but I'm up-to-date I also checked TVFS (ThinkVantage Fingerprint Software), but after starting it I get another error, which says: "VTAPI+ is not initialised (Error Code: 3)"So I checked the folder of TVFS and found a file named "vtapipql.dll" which is described as "VTAPI+ Interface", but here I am at a loss.  I'm appreciating your help! Thanks in advance, and please excuse my not so perfect english, it's not my mother tongue.Message Edited ... Hi!Yesterday I got my new notebook, a Lenovo ThinkPad T61.After installing Windows XP Professional and Service Pack 2, I've tried to install the Fingerprint Software and Driver.Everythink installed just fine, but I can't select the first two Options in the ThinkVantage Fingerprint Software."Fingerabdrücke" (Fingerprints) and "Einstellungen" (Settings) are not accessible. The only menu item I can click is the Tutorial, then the tutorial will start. When I move the cursor over the Tutorial, the text turns light blue, on the two other entries it doesn't. So I'm not able to change any settings or enroll any fingerprints. Enrolling fingerprints is only possible by executing enrollbtn.exe and then I can add my fingerprints as usual. And I can use them for the CSS lateron. But I can't set any fingerprint for my windows Logon, because I can't access the menu for that.I've tried to reinstall the Software, using an older Version,... The sensor itself works quite fine. Im running Windows XP Pro with Service Pack 2, .NET 3.0 and v5.8.4 of the fingerprint software. I've got this sensor and I want to use it.  Edit: Okay, through CSS I was able to set a fingerprint for windows logon, but the settings of the Fingerprint Software are still disabled Thank you in advance for your help,Greeting from Germany,Sebastian

Hello, I have been having an issue with my X220 freezing. This tends to happen relatively randomly, however I have noticed it more frequently under these specific circumstances:Plugging in the computerUnplugging the computerWhen there is a shift in the speed of the fanThis is not to say that the computer always freezes under these conditions, but this is when I tend to notice it most. To describe the issue further, when I mean that the computer freezes, the screen locks up and I cannot move the mouse with either thre trackpoint or pad. I cannot use the keyboard either, with neither esc, cntrl-alt-del or any other combination of buttons functioning to make the computer come back to normal. The only way I can "resolve" the issue is by doing a forced restart my holding down the power button. After it restarts, it is fine, at least until another freeze. Another issue that I've had that may be related is that for a while when I closed the lid of the computer to put it to sleep, the computer would shut down. I've checked all of my settings regarding power management and what the computer should do when the lid is closed, and it was always set to put the computer to sleep when the lid was closed, so that is not the issue. As a temporary solution I've now changed that setting to have the computer go into hibernation when the lid is closed, which does not cause shut downs, but it is obviously less desireable than just having the computer go to sleep. I called Lenov... hey mctagga9,just curious to know, have you done a full system update of your x220 ?if you have not, kindly do so. If you have updated your unit, could you access msconfig and use diagnostic startup.this mode will make windows load only windows driver. by doing so, you can check if the problem stems from a non-windows driver or something else.

I recently transferred a large amount of files from a USB3.0 capable portable HDD and a superspeed USB3.0 cable. When plugged into the USB3.0 slot on my notebook, the transfer rate was shown as only 48MB/s instead of the theoretical 5GB/s. I tried plugging into the 2.0 slot on my notebook, and the transfer rate was shown as 36MB/s. Any idea what could be the problem here?

Answer:X220 USB 3.0 speed issue

The theoretical speed is if both ends are able to sustain that speed. At best, a spinning hard drive will provide up to 60MB/s-120MB/s under sequential reads, and up to 0.5MB/s-1.1MB/s under random reads. Hence, the USB 3.0 bandwidth will not be fully saturated.

Use HD Tune's trial and run a benchmark on the drive while attached to the USB 3.0 port.

Question: Fingerprint issue

Hi All,
firstly, thank you for your time and effort
I have Latitude E5550 which come with Ubuntu system.

I changed my OS to Windows 7 Professional - Service Pack 1 - 64Bit. Manually and without a drivers CD, I downloaded all my drivers from Dell Support using my service tag

I used to have the finger print work normally, but recently I formatted my laptop and now I can't use the fingerprint anymore.
when the problem first appeared, I could see fingerprint under Biometric device but it was unavailable. at that time, I installed DDP (Dell Data Protection) and when I "enroll" fingerprint, it shows the device is there but it couldn't detect my finger. Also, when I tried to update the firmware, It said that I need to install Dell ControlPoint Security but I couldn't find it in Dell Support. After that, I uninstalled DDP and firmware and reinstalled them again from Dell website but the problem was that when I tried to run the installation wizard of firmware, it couldn't be completed (rolls back).
Today, I installed the firmware again from Dell website and it's installed but the finger print is not found by Biometric device or DDP console. when I run Control Vault, I receive error message that firmware needs to be updated and when I try to update it, another error message appears (anti hammering is enabled and maybe preventing firmware from updating).
current situation:
1- fingerprint not detected
2- when I instal... Read more

Well i've looked everywhere and nothing can help me get past this. It seems like a really simple issue too, what happens is that when I try to log on (using either the password or a fingerprint, both work), it starts to log on but then goes to the user enrollment screen. It then tells me I need to enroll fingerprints (which I obviously have done, since I can log in with my fingerprint, but doing so still takes me to this stage), but when I attempt to enroll fingerprints it tells me my username cannot be used for a new passport. Which is fine, because I know my account is fine, my background even loads. The problem is that nothing I have tried so far will let me get past this screen. It always comes up and tries to get me to enroll fingerprints.I have tried to load in safe mode, but the F8 way does not work to do so, and anything else i've read was just confusing (i've read to go into boot.ini and make safemode a boot option, but I have NO idea what that means). Does anyone know how to get into safe mode another way?Going into the thinkvantage bios setup also doesn't work, i've tried turning fingerprint id off in there but it doesn't do anything. I've also tried logging on with an admin password, but somehow that doesn't work either. It is a school computer (and it started doing this the day after we went on break), but we don't go back for a month, so i'd like to get it fixed before then, and I don't see why the software they put on it would have to do with this.
