X220 and Offline Files issue.

Question: X220 and Offline Files issue.

My manager uses the offline files feature quite a lot and now she has moved to an X220 with Win 7 Pro 64-bit, however some days when she logs in she notices the sync icon isn't in the tray. When you go into offline files it says its enable but not active a restart will activate it. However rebooting leads to the same thing, instead I go into the services page and find that although set to auto the offline file service is not running, I click start and it kicks back into life. Now I have viewed the event viewer from when the computer starts and the Offline file service first starts then gchanges state to auto (delayed) then changes back to auto before finally saying that the service has stopped. All of these are info events as opposed to error or warning events. I know some services don't run even when set to auto as they are not needed however without offfline files service running no syncing is done and you also lose the "Always available offline" option when you right click a folder/file. If anyone has any ideas as to whyt the service is stopping that would be great. Mark

Preferred Solution: X220 and Offline Files issue.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: X220 and Offline Files issue.

It is caused by a bug in "RapidBoot" which is software that Lenovo preloads. You can either (a) uninstall RapidBoot or (b) upgrade to the latest version which fixes this bug. I recommend (a) - you won't miss RapidBoot by uninstalling it. Sorry for your inconvenience.

Check this out:

On my Vista machine, this sometimes happens.
I don't know exactly what the problem is, so thought I'd post and see if someone else has had the same issues. FWIW, nothing like this is an issue on XP.

What's going on in this screenshot is A) I'm searching for a file and it's taking forever. B) I've opened a redirected My Documents, which sits on the server...
It sits like this for a bit, like it's working on something. I did a Run -> mspaint to paste the screenshot in and it worked instantly, which makes me think it's just a networking issue.

A few things I thought of:
1) Offline files? Does Vista treat this different, so it's just trying to sync these offline files, thus the network share (which I have opened on the right in that image) becomes unresponsive?
2) Indexing of network shares? Another possibility I thought of, because why else would the search tool hang as well? Either the indexing is hanging or due to the fact the network share is not accessible it's timing itself out.

I'm going to disable the Windows Search service to see if the issue gets better or not...

Edit- Also, I've already got IPv6 disabled

Hello,

I am having an issue that I can't seem to figure out. I inherited a network setup a few months ago. I was having issues where files on a user's home drive were not showing up when they would move PC's. After looking into this I realized that offline files are enabled by default in Windows 7 pro. I disabled this in group policy but for some user's, certain files in the c:\windows\csc directory do not exist on their home drive. Therefore, restoring these is a huge pain for me.

Am I completely missing something here? I have no reason to use off line files because this is a school and users are constantly using different PC's. Students are working on things on one PC and then not having access to it on other PC's. Could this just be residual? Perhaps programs cache the save path and are still dumping files in the c:\windows\csc path.

Any help here would be appreciated. This is a headache that I thought I resolved with disabling offline file sync.

Thanks

So I understand this you need users to be able to access files from any computer they log into?

I have a user, pretty high up too go figure. He got a new laptop instead of a desktop and we setup offline files for him so he can undock and work from home. However whenever he creates a new file at home when he comes in they won't sync. I can't find any specific messages that would explain the issue either on the computer or the server and most times it just goes away on its own, the files eventually sync while we aren't looking.

The error is a generic access denied error however I can create new files and new folders on the server at the time, these network shared folders are his so he has full access and ownership.

I'm stumped.

I have a user on Windows 2000 Pro who is running offline files to our 2003 Server. Everything was working fine until the other day when he ran Synchronization and then certain folders appeared with a red arrow instead of the original double blue arrows denoting offline files. I have never seen this red arrow, does anyone know what this signifies?

Thanks,

Hello,

since yesterday we have problems with computers where the offline files are enabled and the cache is encrypted.

Users cannot save files the message access is denied is coming up.

It's possible to create a file, which has then 0 bytes and when opening the file the same message is coming up.

If we do not encrypt the offline cache via GPO, everything runs normally again.

This setup worked now for several years without problems.
Any Patchday issue?

Hi,
I'm sitting with a big issue at a customer and ask for your help.
Environment:
- 3x Windows 2008 R2 file servers configured in DFS
- approx. 500x Windows 7 clients (Laptops)
- 3x network shares, Common1, Common2 and Homefolder.
- "Offline Files" and "Folder Redirection" enabled for entire user profile.
- Everything is controlled by GPOs and there are no login scripts.
Symptom:
Due to some faulty settings in the client GPO and the fact that the "Common" shares was set to allow Offline Caching of files and folders, the majority of clients now suffer from sync issues and conflicts.
Most of the conflicted files are located in the users home folder, but some users are also seeing the same issues with files located on the "Common" shares. The users themselfes are not allowed to enable Offline Files as this is disabled by GPOs.
The only folders that should be treated as Offline Files are the ones in the users home folder.
Solution:
A new set of GPOs have been created that correctly set up "Offline Files" and "Folder Redirection". These are linked to a test-OU and the computers and users applied to that OU are not suffering from the problems above.
Question:
When we move a client, the cache will be deleted and all non-sync'd work will be lost.
Today we manually look at every users sync center and try to resolve the conflicts before we move them to the new OU. This is extremely time consuming when... Read more

I have looked through all the similar threads but still couldn't find a solution to this.  We have Windows 7 machines logging into a Windows 2008 AD networks. While on the network, our clients are set to use internal DNS set by DHCP. A few of our
folks have offline files setup on their home drives.  These users can successfully log onto their computers offline.  When they attempt to access their offline files however, they receive the message "The system has detected a possible attempt
to compromise security. Please ensure that you can contact the server that authenticated you" along with the option to provide their credentials. Entering their credentials fails of course. The work around for them is to disconnect from the wireless network
or disable the WLAN card. At that point they can access their offline files.  But as soon as they reboot, they receive the same message.  If they reboot with the WLAN card disabled, they will not receive this message and are able to access their
offline files.  Additionally these users are setup with VPN. If they enable VPN, the issue is corrected and they can again access their offline files.

We've attempted removing and rejoining to AD, removing their user profiles and completely rebuilding the laptop from scratch. It appears when the laptop is connected to a wireless network, it wants to contact our AD network. The articles below haven't offered
a solution.

Where I work we have a user who is in a remote office connected via a site to site VPN to our main office but it's over a somewhat slow link (1mbit). Since she's a laptop user we have offline files enabled on her laptop so that all of her stuff gets synced back to our corp network, it generally works well when she's in the main office or on the road and just connects to our VPN to sync. However, it seems that when she's in the remote office and is connected her laptop will end up connecting to our file server back here, which is all well and good except that when she goes to browse her files, etc it takes an extremely long time because it's doing all the reading from our main office. I know there are some GPO things we can do but it takes awhile to put those in place, I've been looking for a way to essentially force that folder to think it's working offline so she can do what she needs to do in a timely manner, but I haven't been able to find a way how yet and was wondering if anyone here knew. I know there's a way in Vista, but she's running XP.

Thanks in advance.

I am still having issues getting offline files to work correctly. I have a notebook running Windows 7 Pro 64, that syncs with a desktop also running Win7 Pro 64. After a clean install, due to the many issues I've had dealing with Offline Files before, I just synced 1 folder to see if it would work. And it did. Windows 7 synced the folder and it was made available offline. I could easily make folders available offline by simply right-clicking on a folder and clicking the option "Always available offline".  I was also able to successfully sync my Documents, Desktop and Favorites folders (using folder redirection).
Oddly, when I tried to make a new folder available offline a few weeks later, the option is gone for any other folders (new or previously existing). And when I right-click on a folder (or file) and choose Properties, the Offline Files tab no longer shows as well.
I have a fairly simple home network setup. My notebook computer syncs with a desktop PC also running Windows 7 Professional 64 (I call this the "Server" PC). Nothing has changed network-wise or configuration wise on either PC. I haven't messed with any network settings or played around with offline files settings since the last successful sync. No new networking hardware has been added either.

My offline files seems to work offline all the time, even when it shows me being online. I sync most of my business files to my laptop for working at home at night.

When I edit a file from my Win 7 (pro, 64-bit) laptop, then go to edit it again, I get the version I had changed, but no one else does. This is causing huge difficulty, because my employees will start working in a sales forecast spreadsheet after I reconnect to the network and supposedly sync, but they don't get the latest version. Even doing a manual sync seems to make no difference.

It seems that if someone else edits something on the network share, it does update to my laptop, but when I update something, it doesn't transfer so that everyone else can use it?

Where should we begin looking?

Answer:Offline files doen't update files changed locally

It may help if you enable transparent caching which can be enabled through Group Policy. I'm not sure this is the same problem but it seems to apply to your problem.

Windows 7 introduces a new feature for Offline Files & Folders called “Transparent Caching”. With transparent caching, the first time a user opens a file in a shared folder, Windows 7 reads the file from the server and then stores it in a cache on the computer’s hard disk drive.

The second and subsequent times a user reads the same file, Windows 7 retrieves the cached file from disk instead of reading it from the server. To provide data integrity, Windows 7 always contacts the server to ensure the cached copy is up-to-date.

The cache is never accessed if the server is unavailable and updates to the file are always written directly to the server. Transparent Caching is not enabled by default and can be enabled through Group Policy at Computer configuration | Administrative Templates | Network | Offline Files | Enable Transparent Caching.

Not at all sure this is a Lenovo X220 issue (win 7- 64bit), but I'm having the following problem with my 1tb WD My Passport Essential SE USB 3.0 external drive: It works fine when plugged into the USB 3.0 port.  However, if I safely eject it, and use it in a USB 2.0 port, it will not be recognized if I go back to the USB 3.0 port.  I can usely get it working again in USB 3.0 mode if I reboot. (I have two of these external drives, and the behavior is identical for both of them). I've tried lots of different things, but still can't solve this issue.  Are there any newer USB 3.0 drivers for Windows 7, or for the X220, that I should be installing?  The only one I see for USB 3.0 on the Lenovo site is for the Nec controller. Again - not saying this is a Lenovo issue, but I don't have another computer with USB 3.0, so I was hoping people might be able to tell me about their experience with USB 3.0 and the X220.  Thank you.

Answer:X220 - USB 3.0 issue

I updated the USB 3 drivers from Lenovo - even tried a later version from Renesas, but no resolution of the issue. Would be interested if anyone else out there is running USB 3 external drives in their X220 - if so, have you ever used the same drive in a USB 2 port? Thanks.

Hi,
I already searched through alot of threads but could not find anyone having the exact same issue.
We have a Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise with SP1 which is hosting a DFS Namespace.
A customer of us works with his notebook (Win 7 SP 1) and has enabled Offline Files for his personal folder
in the DFS path. The initial synchronisation seemed to work and no sync errors are reported in Sync Center.

Now the problem is, everytime he opens a document from his DFS path and saves it, a .tmp file gets
created there and doesnt disappear. Not even after reboot. As far as i know it happens with Word, Excel and PDF documents.

If I log on to the server and browse to his path, i cannot see those .tmp files, only he can see it.
If I try to delete those files from his notebook I get an error "File is no longer located in... Verify the itemīs location and try again".
What I have tried so far:
If Offline Files get disabled, those .tmp files disappear. On activating they are visible again.
Tried "Delete temporary files" from Sync Center -> Manage Offline Files -> Disk Usage. Nothing happened.
I tried to repair Office, didnīt help.
The only Group Policy Settings we have relating to Offline Files are "Synchronize all offline files before logging off"
and "Allow or Disallow use of the Offline Files Feature" which is enabled.

Would be nice if someone can get me into the right direction to fix this issue.

Hello, I have been having an issue with my X220 freezing. This tends to happen relatively randomly, however I have noticed it more frequently under these specific circumstances:Plugging in the computerUnplugging the computerWhen there is a shift in the speed of the fanThis is not to say that the computer always freezes under these conditions, but this is when I tend to notice it most. To describe the issue further, when I mean that the computer freezes, the screen locks up and I cannot move the mouse with either thre trackpoint or pad. I cannot use the keyboard either, with neither esc, cntrl-alt-del or any other combination of buttons functioning to make the computer come back to normal. The only way I can "resolve" the issue is by doing a forced restart my holding down the power button. After it restarts, it is fine, at least until another freeze. Another issue that I've had that may be related is that for a while when I closed the lid of the computer to put it to sleep, the computer would shut down. I've checked all of my settings regarding power management and what the computer should do when the lid is closed, and it was always set to put the computer to sleep when the lid was closed, so that is not the issue. As a temporary solution I've now changed that setting to have the computer go into hibernation when the lid is closed, which does not cause shut downs, but it is obviously less desireable than just having the computer go to sleep. I called Lenov... hey mctagga9,just curious to know, have you done a full system update of your x220 ?if you have not, kindly do so. If you have updated your unit, could you access msconfig and use diagnostic startup.this mode will make windows load only windows driver. by doing so, you can check if the problem stems from a non-windows driver or something else.

I recently transferred a large amount of files from a USB3.0 capable portable HDD and a superspeed USB3.0 cable. When plugged into the USB3.0 slot on my notebook, the transfer rate was shown as only 48MB/s instead of the theoretical 5GB/s. I tried plugging into the 2.0 slot on my notebook, and the transfer rate was shown as 36MB/s. Any idea what could be the problem here?

Answer:X220 USB 3.0 speed issue

The theoretical speed is if both ends are able to sustain that speed. At best, a spinning hard drive will provide up to 60MB/s-120MB/s under sequential reads, and up to 0.5MB/s-1.1MB/s under random reads. Hence, the USB 3.0 bandwidth will not be fully saturated.

Use HD Tune's trial and run a benchmark on the drive while attached to the USB 3.0 port.

Hi I recently flashed my BIOS (going from 1.26 -> 1.31) prior to installing Windows 7 x64 on a new SSD on my X220. The BIOS update seemed to work OK (I used the lenovo Windows utility to do it), but now I can't save any changes to any BIOS settings. I also cannot reset to defaults - I can't even select some options in the BIOS (e.g. anything to do with UEFI) - the cursor just skips over the lines on screen - and those I can select don't respond to any changes I try to make. I don't get any errors either in BIOS or in Windows, and my X220 boots OK, but obviously there's something wrong there. After updating the BIOS, I installed the SSD (a Samsung 830) and installed Windows on it - all this worked OK although I was planning to switch to UEFI for the new install and couldn't do so because the BIOS is now uneditable. Everything in Windows seems to work OK. I've tried re-running the BIOS utility but it reports that the BIOS is up to date and it won't re-apply the current update.  I've checked to see if anyone else has reported this issue here, and found a few reports with similar issues but different situations (e.g. people running Linux rather than Windows, or Wifi not working after the update) - but not this issue exactly. I'm wondering if this will fix itself when a new BIOS version is released and applied - if that's likely, I'm happy to wait until then (so long as nothing breaks in the meantime). I'd rather do that than pull the CMOS battery ... Read more

Hi, everybody! I have I strange problem. My ThinkVantage Fingerprint Software was working fine a few days ago until I had to uninstall the software. I had to uninstall it because my x200 had a motherboard problem and went to service. Meanwhile I used the HDD with another notebook. That's why I had to remove the fingerprint software. I got my x220 back and I tried to install the fingerprint (along with all other software and drivers) software, but I'm getting this message and the installation stops: You have currently installed another version of fingerprint software. Please, uninstall your existing software before running this installation. Actually, there's no sign left from the fingerprint software. I removed it via the Programs and Features menu, I entered BIOS, removed all the fingerprint data from the new motherboard (although I believe that was not quite necessary since it's a brand-new motherboard). All other drivers and software installed fine, without any problem. Has someone else encountered a similar problem? I'd appreciate it very much if you help me somehow. Thanks!

I've played youtube video w/ chromium on xubuntu 16.04, pressed pause while being in fullscreen mod and closed the lid as usually. When I opened it, everything ran very slowly, all animations were stuttering, exhaust air was pretty hot, fan spinned at full speed, but there was less than 8% CPU load and 1 GB of RAM used. What I tried already: rebooting, taking out and putting back the battery, loading previous kernel version from grub menu. Then I swapped ssd with another laptop in house, which had windows 7 and xubuntu dualboot. Both systems ran slowly on x220, and xubuntu from x220 ran good on other laptop, so my conclusion was: there's a hardware problem with x220. Then I turned off Intel SpeedStep and CPU power management features in bios and turned on again, nothing changed. I put back ssd with xubuntu in x220 and ran dmesg console utility, this is what output looks like: https://pastebin.com/YREFCZQZ but I can't make any decision from this data. What should I do next to deal with this problem?

Hi,i just think that fan pulsing issue maybe needs new thread here because some major problems  pointed here http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/X-Series-ThinkPad-Laptops/X220-fan-constantly-on-revving-up-and-down/td-... are with new bios (1.16) solved. So, as many user may experience - thinkpad x220i (i3), but also other x220 series have this fan pulsing problem. If you put your ear at the fan area you could notice every 3-4 sec some sort of pulsing/beating. This pulsing is gone between 1954-1972 RPMs by my x220, but at all other RPMs i can hear it, or even feall it with my hand on keyboard.I uploaded the sound of this pulsing fan here:http://thinkpad-forum.de/threads/110463-X220-Serie?p=1092014&viewfull=1#post1092014 You can hear it with headphones an 100% Volume. Hello,I've been using my X220 for almost 2 years now and now all of a sudden, whenever I use my x220, my wireless internet would stop working (at random moments) what happens is:first the network i am connected to becomes limited and any program that uses the internet gives me an error  message saying there is no internetthen all available connections disappear from that window that tells me the networks i can connect tothen when i try to turn my wireless radio off and on (via FN  + F5 )  i get a popup saying no network adapters are supported by the lenovo softwareafterwards i try to reset my wireless radio via physical switch (on the right side of my x220) but nothing happens. the only way to "fix" this issue is to reboot. is there anything i can do to fully fix this issue?

Answer:X220 Issue with wireless internet.

Hi, lilvietyao
Have you ensured that you have the latest driver software for your wireless adapter? If not, the latest drivers can be found here. Also, which operating system are you using?

Thanks in advance,
Adam

Hi, For few weeks now, I have been experiencing a very frustrating battery issue with my X220. Usually I put my laptop in hibernation while there is still a good battery capacity (70-80%) at night (or before going to work). On the next day, when restarting the laptop, both Power manager and the windows gauge are indicating close to the same percentage as just before it was stopped the night before. Then after a random time, ranging from few minutes to a hour or so, windows will notify me that the battery is at a critical level of charge (6%) while just before both Power manager and windows indicator were showing something like 60% remaining. At that point windows shows 6% while power manager still shows the previous level of charge (let say 60%). After few minutes, Power manager indicator goes all to 6% and then the PC hibernates.  I think that my issue appeared after I updated Power manager, I reinstalled it including its driver with no luck...I am now performing a battery reset to see if it helps. I read several other posts regarding similar issues on the lenovo forums, it was suggested that some battery cells might been faulty and that a battery swap might solve the problem. However, as far as I read, it seems that people who performed a battery swap were still experiencing the issue. I wanted to know if there were any know fix for this battery issue or at least what steps I should be taking to investigate/debug this issue? ... Answer:Battery issue (6-cells) with my X220

To get the obvious out of the way, when your battery life suddenly drops off, are you watching YouTube or surfing Flash-heavy web sites? Yeah, a sudden drop-off in indicated battery life sounds like a driver issue, so I dunno...maybe you could try rolling back the battery driver or Power Manager. (There's a way to roll back the driver via Windows Device Manager, right? Just make sure you don't uninstall the driver through Windows; there should be a button to click for "roll back driver.") I suggest making regular full-system-image backups of your X220 while you're working on the drivers. With my old x100e, I got myself into trouble after uninstalling AMD Catalyst Controller, and it just refused to reinstall. Do you think like...a battery calibration would work? Go into Power Manager, Advanced, then Global Settings. Go to the battery low/critical section and click the box that says "do nothing" for when low and critical are reached. Power Manager will force the computer to run, even though the battery will broadcast a 0% level remaining. (And just to be safe, run the calibration with everything closed, use Power Manager to set the CPU to "low," and set a video looping in WMP or something like that, at brightness 11 of 15.)  It's not too healthy for the battery (to deep discharge), but if you get 3-6 hours in that test, it'll be safe to say the problem's in the software, either something hogging CPU power or a driver issue. I've done it a bunch of times, but... My X220 doesn't seem to detect headphones properly.  Sound comes out of them instead of the internal speakers, but the audio mixer still shows the device connected as "speakers."  My old laptop could detect when headphones are plugged in and kept separate volume levels for headphones vs internal speakers, should the X220 be able to do this? I'm running Windows 7 on an i5-2520M with 8GB RAM.

Answer:X220 Headphone Detection issue

Actually this made me curious, so I checked out my X220, and indeed it worked like you described. However, I found a way to change that to provide the effect you're looking for. In Control Panel, click the Smart Audio icon. This will bring up the Smart Audio panel. Click Audio Director, one of the bottom icons. This brings up two choices, Classic & Multi-Stream. Changing to Multi-Stream recognizes the headphones when plugged in, and indeed maintains a different volume level. Hope that works for you!

Hi everyone,  I have a problem with the wi fi connection in my laptop, the computer doesent read the wirelees divise. when I click Fn F5 all I can see is the bluetooth adapter, no wifi adapter to turn on or off, this have been happening reacently, yesterday I downloaded the drivers and nothing, then I restarted the computer several times and it began to work again but after I put the laptop in stand by the problem came back again, now im using a datacard to connect to the internet. Thank you for your help.

Answer:Thinkpas X220 Wi Fi connectivity issue

Hi,it seems I have the similar issue with my x220 and wifi card Intel Centrino 1000 - sometimes after laptop resumes from sleep wifi card disapears not only from control window after Fn+F5 pressing, but from Device Manager.I think it's a power management driver related issue but can't explain why. Or some tool from Hotkey Features Integration package doesn't work properly. I've noticed several times at this moment monitor driver (in Device Manager too) didn't work also. But the biggest and the most trouble is laptop can't be rebooted or turned off correctly - every time when wifi adapter disapears after 5-7 minutes of tasks closing I get a BSOD with Power Management error message. Of course, wifi adapter works correctly after laptop turning on.And another one trouble - after I've deleted Access Connections wireless devices control window (after Fn+F5) can't be opened with error message. What I did?1. delete and reinstall Hotkey and PM driver manually. No effect.2. delete Hotkey and PM driver, reinstall them using System Update. No effect. These issues are very unpleasant but I don't want to revert laptop to the factory stage.x220, win7pro 64 bit, bios 1.19, drivers and OS updates are up to date.

My laptop screen has developed a vertical grey band about 10cm wide which starts very light but as I leave the laptop switched on gets increasingly dark and when dark I can see effectively a shadow of a previous image on the screen, making it very difficult to read. I'm concerned that it may not simply be a screen replacement issue as there seems some comment that it may be a connector cable issue.  Any ideas?

I recently purchased a Lenovo X220 and I am attempting to setup a dual monitor with it and a Samsung Syncmaster BX2331 monitor. When I change the setting to extended desktop on the secondary monitor the laptop monitor starts having issues. The useable space becomes bigger than the actual screen so I can scroll up and down while on the desktop. It will also scroll left and right and the desktop icons will move over onto the secondary monitor. The laptop has a resolution of 1366x768 and the monitor is 1920x1080. I am trying to explain the issue the best I can but it's a little hard to explain.

Answer:Dual monitor issue Lenovo x220

I know what you mean, it happened in XP when you set the screen resolution larger than what the screen was capable of. What cable are you using the connection to your secondary monitor? On the secondary monitor, press the auto calibrate button, or it's equivalent, and then unplug the VGA/HDMI cable and plug it back in see if that fixes your problem. it's also worth trying going into the settings and checking the button that says "hides modes not supported by this monitor" If you don't know where that is, right click on the desktop and click "screen resolution" then click advanced and at the bottom of that pop up you should see that check box. Those are the first things to check.

I have not been able to 'plug in' my AC adaptor properly for almost 6 months. It always slides out a little after plugging in. At first, it was just a tiny problem and I managed to wiggle it manually. But now I cannot even charge unless I wiggle it for a good 10-15 minutes to find a good 'spot' then physically hold the cord in place. I thought it was the AC, but having tried a new AC adaptor that changed nothing, I started to think it's the DC. Called Lenovo today,  but was told that DC is not covered by warranty (although my machine is still under warranty). I don't know why it's not under warranty, as quite a number of threads have reported this issue here. Anyway, Lenovo asked me to just find a local service provider if I want to have a check up and change the DC (not keen on sending in the machine), but would changing the DC affect my warranty? (If it requires opening up the machine..etc). p.s. Lenovo Switzerland is very unhelpful in this regard (called them 5 times and was passed around to different people), so I had to post the question here. Thanks in advance.

Hello,

I've purchased the Lenovo X220 laptop with the Premium HD IPS display and I do have a problem with it (see below).
Laptop was purchased something like month ago and I've spotted this after I've started to work with it more heavily but after 14 days, so I was not able to return it to the seller (http://www.lenovoonline.cz).

When you put backlight to maximum you see that the display is not evenly lighted and forming bright spots on the bottom of it. It's most noticable on the black background.

I've sent notebook for repair (http://www.pcnet.cz) with this description (translated to english):"With maximum brightness set and the black display/background (eg. BOOT screen) on the bottom edge of the display there are visible white spots/maps. Small but visible and not even with different sizes. It's most visible on black background and while limiting external light (darker room, working in the night). Spots highlights even more when you try to pull the display towards you into steeper angle."

The laptop has been in the repair for 2 weeks and the result was this description:
"This kind of display is very sensitive to any pressure, and it will result in the brightening the place. It is specific for this model line and it's not the reason to warranty repair. We recommend to lower the brightness level in the darker room. Check of the display frame has been done and no problem has been found."
Later they said they've re... Read more

Answer:X220 IPS display backlight issue (with photos)

Yes, at maximum brightness level the backlight bleeding is very visible but I use it at 5 or 6 level where it has excellent contrast ratio considering how crappy current notebook displays are in general. The uneven backlight is caused by fancy LED backlight which is still not able to deliver similar quality regarding uniformity as good old CCFL backlight (that's why professional LCD monitors still rely on W-CCFL backlight). But I agree that the top-left corner is way too much bad and might indicate that the panel is seated badly in the frame. On the other hand my old IPS panel in R51 also have backlight bleed at maximum brightness level. Major problem is that Lenovo is still not able to fix the stupid bug with brightness level always set to max in BIOS screen that the backlight bleeding is very visible and irritating everytime you boot your machine. IMHO, the X220 IPS panel is still much better than any ugly contrastless TN panel Lenovo puts into ThinkPads (except 15" FHD). I bet that you would hate the X220i TN panel more than this one  There are also two different revisions of the IPS panel, the second one fixes problems with image retention. As for comparison with Z60m, X220 display lid is much more fragile so the panel is not protected well against pressures and flexes. In any case panel flex should affect the backlight bleeding temporarily only. If it persists it is subject to repair (replace, reseat etc.). Unfortunately I don't have any good low-ligh... Read more

I've been having this awful issue with my X220 recently.  Whenever the microphone is active, whether in a skype call, recording audio with some random flash app, or just viewing the microphone settings it causes the audio output, whether from the spakers or headphones, to cut in and out in a really odd fashion.  It won't completely cut the audio off, but rather go in and out of playing the audio normally to this weird status of playing audio like it's somewhat muffled.  If I go into the audio devices and disable the microphone the problem goes away completely, but it only really occurs when something is using the microphone. All of the settings in skype and windows relating to letting applications control audio and reducing volume for calls have been disabled as well. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the audio drivers, and am up to date on bios and everything else.Windows 7 x64

I wanted more capacity so foolishly replaced my trouble free 256gb Samsung 830 SSD with the 480GB Corsair Neutron GTX SSD on my Thinkpad X220 (should have stuck with Samsung) and whilst the Neutron GTX is hyper-fast, its giving me a problem. When i try to shut down Windows 7 (Pro 64 bit OEM), the notebook freezes at the "windows shutting down" screen (happens around 1 in 5 times) and i'm forced to remove the battery or hold down the power button to switch off the notebook. When i switch on the notebook again i get the message:"2100: Detection Error on HDD0 (Main HDD)"Pressing escape a few times does finally take me into Windows and everything works ok until i get the same issue again a few shutdowns later. I've formatted the SSD and re-installed Windows 7 again (in AHCI mode) but the problem still exists. This issue did NOT exist with the Samsung 830 SSD. The BIOS is up to date, ALL hardware drivers/firmware are up to date. I'm thinking perhaps the Corsair SSD is faulty so will test it in my desktop to see if i can replicate the issue. But before i do that, can anyone suggest other possible solutions?

Hello ThinkPad-Community, I have a sporadic issue with the brightness control, thats mean sometimes I start my laptop from standby and the control with "Fn+Pos1 or FN+END" doesn't work. There is no reaction and no on screen display progress bar. Also in the default Windows 7 energy settings is no control of the display brightness possible. If the issue exist, only a complete reboot of the ThinkPad solve the issue. I've also found some discussions about this in the internet but no solution helps realy. NOTE: My Laptop has a complete clean install of Windows 7 and all drivers was installed by Lenovo System Updater.Does anybody have the same issue? Thanks for your help

This is an on & off issue that creeps up on various Thinkpads. It was very notorious on my X120e, but it doesn't happen on my X220 at all, and I sleep/resume it all the time...It's a bug they can't seem to correct.

Hello, I recently purchased a x220 and I am very happy with it. I turned off  "sleep when closed" for some reason and then accidently left it in my bag for like 15-20mins. It was hot but didn't really smell like burnt plastic or anything. However I feel as if the screen is harder to get at the right brightness. It feels as if I have to get a very precise angle to view the screen at the proper brightness/clarity. However it is hard for me to say if there is any difference to before as this happened only a week after using it. It could be acting just fine and I am just paranoid so my question is has there been any issues that have come up like this before? Has overheating in a bag or something ever caused the LCD screen to function just slightly improperly? Thank you,

Answer:x220 got hot, and now screen display clarity issue?

Well, first of all, I hope you're talking about the basic, TN LCD display, not the upgraded "Premium HD" IPS LCD screen. Anyway, personally I feel like it's so easy to be paranoid about screen quality and possible minor screen damage or defects, but Lenovo has owned up to the "ghosting" issue, so things can really happen sometimes. In your case, I wouldn't worry. Provided you are indeed talking about the basic TN screen and not the IPS, it sounds like your screen's viewing angles are performing normally. For some extra confidence, the Notebookcheck review of the X220 says their test unit got so hot under the sun that the plastic began to warp and bow, and even then, they didn't mention any screen degredation. And for that matter, isn't the X220 Mil-spec tested for heat? http://www.notebookcheck.net/Review-Lenovo-ThinkPad-X220-IPS-Subnotebook.55639.0.html

Hi,I tried to find an answer to what happened to my X220 last week end. Suddenly it stopped being able to wake from sleep. Power button "breathing" green ring present, but it was not waking up by opening the lid or by Fn key press. When powered off by long press of power button, it booted successfully. This behavior was reproducible always. I thought maybe BIOS reset could help and I did it. After this it did not POST and it beeped 1 3 3 1 pattern - which is, according to documentation, system board or RAM. Having known the RAM was fine, I did pull them out and tried both modules one by one with no luck. So I took them out and went for original, small module, the machine was bought with. And it POSTed successfully with it. But after removing this module and returning the old, big modules, it POSTed too. And waking problem disappeared. Should I be worried about system board? My machine was made between Sep and Dec 2011, could it be early manifestation of dead EEPROM? Is there any way to test it?

I purchased this unit June 2012, following update recommendations through Lenovo Solution Center since that date.  BIOS 1.33.  Recently installed Crucial 256gb mSATA SSD.  TrackPoint and TrackPad worked fine until yesterday.  I also use a Lenovo Bluetooth mouse, purchased three months ago, and all three forms of GUI cursor navigation worked fine until yesterday.  I used a wired USB mouse to navigate while (1) uninstalling and reinstalling the Bluetooth mouse drivers. (2) I found a thread on this site that spoke of disabling and re-enabling the TrackPoint and the TrackPad in the BIOS.  When both are enabled, neither works.  When the TrackPad is disabled, the TrackPoint works.  When the TrackPoint is enabled and the TrackPad remains enabled, nothing works.  I have uninstalled the UltraNav drivers and installed the current Synaptics driver (from their site), 16.2.21.0 dated 10/26/2012.  I then alternatively disabled and enabled TrackPoint and TrackPad in BIOS as above, and the result is the same. I've deleted the driver subdirectory that contains the UltraNav driver.  I did that before installing the Synaptics driver.  When I use Lenovo Solutions to search for updates, it asks me to download Synaptics UltraNav driver 16.2.5.0, which I then download and installed.  fn-f8, however, says that both TrackPoint and TrackPad must be enabled in the BIOS for UltraNav to work.  When I do that and press fn-f8, I am ... I have updated to latest version 15.6.1 from 15.03.1000.163 (Windows 7 64 bit)http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/detail.page?DocID=DS015011 I have disabled virtual wifi hosted network by 'netsh wlan set hostednetwork disallow' command that always worked for previous driver versions. This version installed two adapters 'Microsoft Virtual WiFi Miniport Adapter' and 'Microsoft Virtual WiFi Miniport Adapter #2'  that appear in Device Manager and disabling the hosted network no longer works. The netsh disallow command reports ok but 'netsh wlan show hostednetwork' always reports Allowed state. I have tried to remove the driver at all, restart and install it again but the issue persists. The only fix is to revert back to previous one 15.03.1000.163 I think this is a security issue that has to be resolved because the hosted network can not be safely disabled.

Ok, I'm posting this as a separate thread, since it was so strange.Upon learning about how to get full power to the headphone jack, by clicking on the headphones in the SmartAudio control panel, I enabled it. I plugged in my 90watt ultraslim and the x220 started making a terrible microphonic whine, like it was screaming, almost. The sound was coming out of the back of the laptop. Also, the battery refused to charge. As soon as I disabled the headphone boost, the laptop accepted the 90watt ultraslim and started charging as normal.I'm holding on to the 90watt slim for now, since I only use it for charging, but now after this last find, I think I have to get more compatible adapter... Yes, JameZ, I will make a video displaying both isues for engineering.

I am fairly technical and usually able to troubleshoot most problems, but I am stumped.   I have had intermitted loss of internet connectivity since shortly after (maybe right away) I bought my X220 a few months ago.  The machine will lose internet connectivity and regain it randomly.  Other machines working through the same router will have internet connectivity and the X220 has no problem directly connecting to the router.  It does not appear to be a DNS issue since I try pinging 8.8.8.8 as a test.  I am able to log into my router just fine though.  It is very strange that the router connects to the internet, I connect to the router but the computer doesn't connect to the internet.  I assume this has some software component to the problem, but don't know what. The issue are worse when I am using mobile broadband, but still occurs at my house.  System ConfigurationX220 4286CTOCore i5-2410 2.3ghzWindows 7 64bit Home PremiumBios: 8DEET50WW 1.2 7/7/20114GBIntel Centrino Andavnced-N Wimax 6250- Intel Centrino Andavnced-N AGN Driver v14.0.1.2 12/21/2010- Intel Centrino WiMax 6250 Diver v6.2.1007.26 1/18/2011Other Network Adapters Installed- Blueooth PAN- Bluetoooth RFCOMM Protocol TD- Hamachi Network Interface- Intel 82568LM Gigagbit- MSFT Virtual WiFi Miniport Adaptner- PDANet Broadband AdapterHave Access Connections installed

hey daveboston, welcome to the forums.it's hard to say what's going on here but if you could, could you uninstall the current network drivers (wireless and wired) from your system and then let win7 install its generic drivers. Also remove all other network adapters that you have listed.once generic drivers has been installed, test your unit with your router via wireless as well as wired connection. see if there is any difference then head over to http://support.lenovo.com , download and install the wired and wireless network driver for your unit and test again.

So I only noticed this problem a few days ago, I've never had the issue before. I used to game a lot more on my laptop, WoW, Crysis, CSS, lots more, everything ran fine. Specs are:
Windows 7 Professional
Processor: Intel Core2 Duo P9500 @ 2.53GHz
4 Gigs ram
Video Card: Nvidia Geforce 9800M GT

Alright so I haven't really played many games in the past few weeks, but the laptop has always run everything perfectly. Played through Crysis with settings on High with no problems. So a few days ago I installed Assassin's Creed (original) and after about 10 minutes of playing the game I experiences a lag spike that lasted for about 15 seconds. Basically, the sound continued fine but the game's fps seemingly dropped down to like 2. After a bit the game sped back up and was fine, but every few minutes this happens.

I then went to play Left4Dead 2 online, and the same thing happens. Its not the servers or my internet of course, no one else is affected while playing online. So, I decided to test it on one more game, and booted Counter-Strike: Source. I played the game for quite a while experiencing no lag spikes at all.

I really can't figure out what the issue is. I checked all my drivers and their current, I ran a defrag, spyware scan, CCleaner. I even did a system restore to about 2 weeks ago (Windows had done some updates recently) and still had the issue.

I've looked but haven't been able to find any solution that fixes my problem on the forums. I... Read more

Hi

We have few laptops (windows 7 pro) for sales rep and Offline file enable to sync their documents which are on SBS 2011 server.

I don't know why it try to sync some other users (My video , My music , etc ) files and error says "access denied" or

“The Process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process”

we have tried many times and confirm there's no one using those files but still same error

I found this article on forumbut not sure how much this valid to SBS 2011, and if it's known issue why not there's fix patch yet from Microsoft

On the 2003 server I had to ADD this reg entry and set it to 0:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\MRXSmb\Parameters\
OplocksDisabled REG_DWORD 0 or 1
Default: 0 (not disabled)

And then Changed this entry to 1:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\LanmanServer\Parameters

EnableOplocks REG_DWORD 0 or 1
Default: 1 (enabled)

I had a home user come to the office and she was having trouble getting on our network. I turned off off-line files because she doesn't need to sync files to the office on this computer when she comes in anymore on that computer.

Come to find out she was storing all her personal files on the offline drive that we create for each individual here and set it up as offline so files are backed up here in the office.

I have told her to turn off her laptop and do nothing else on it until I look at it. Is there a way to get all those files back that went away when I turned off the offline files? I don't want to do anything until I am sure I make the best move knowing that once those deleted files are overwritten on the hard drive they may still be recoverable in some way.

Please let me know if there is anything I can do to get these files back on her hard drive. Just to be clear they were all on the offline folder of a network drive. I turned off off-line files and they were never syncronized up to the server before I did it.
Thanks for your help.

Hi there,

I have redirected "documents" folder to point our local storage.
Two windows 7 ultimate computers are connected to same location ex.: \\file-server\common-files\

When "computer1" save word, excel, or power point files in \\file-server\common-files\test\test.doc "computer2" see that file with the name like HU87GH.TMP
The file size is correct, however, the file remains unusable from computer2.

What could be the probl?m?

Many thanks for your time.

Answer:offline files - .TMP files generated

Is the network location a NAS (synology, qnap etc) ?

I have the same problem with a Synology DS209+II and I suspect it has to do with Windows not being able to communicate properly with samba shares, even though the newest Firmware (DSM 3.0) explicitly allows you to activate "Support for Windows Offline Files".

Question: XP Offline Files

We have a lot of traveling users here that complain that Windows tries to synchronize when they are not here but have an internet connection at a hotel or at home. Is there a way to set offline files to only syncronize when it sees a specific network?

Hi,

Is there a policy that anyone is aware of that would prevent "traveling users'" from synchronizing offline files with the server when they establish a VPN connection.

This being as some users have offline files totalling over 3GB, that then wish to sync with the server the moment they establish a VPN connection....

I am aware that this can be prevented by running "mobsync" and "configuring" not to sync on certain connections. This have to be done manually at each machine and checked every time a new connection is configured at that machine.

The same problem is experienced when "traveling users" work temporarily at a branch where there is a site-to-site VPN connection between the branches. As their local LAN connection allows for synchronization, massive amounts of data is then "synched" between the branches.

Preferably these "traveling users" should be using their local offline file cache, until they are back at their respective branch.

Any idees please?

Question: Offline Files

I am not sure if I am in the correct forum but here is my problem. I am using Windows XP Professional and I am on a company network. My boss has been out on medical leave and took her computer home with her so she could do work while she recovers. I have access to some Excel files that are on her computer and I have been working offling in them while she has been out. This past Friday, I was sick and could not come into work but my boss was able to come in for a few hours to help out during the busy time and she worked on my computer. I came in on Monday and can no longer access the offline files I have been working in for the last three months. When I try to open a file it tells me that the file cannot be found and to check my spelling or try another path. My boss swears she changed nothing on my computer and was not able to even go into those files. Does anyone have a clue how I can access my offline files? Everything I have read states I will have to delete them but I would lose three months worth of work that I might never be able to recover. Is there any other way?

They are either there in the way you access them as per this article or they are NOT and there is NO way to recover them, as they were of course NEVER on your computer.

We are redirecting My Documents to the userprofile network location for users.  Last week we migrated to 2 new split-scope DHCP servers on Thursday, had set our lease times to 1 hour, and then Thursday and Friday had users reboot and verified
they were registering with the new DHCP servers.  As of Friday everything seemed to be successful.

Yesterday my manager came in to start work, having turned off and taken his Surface Pro 3 running Windows 8.1 home with him on Friday, but not having powered it up over the weekend.  He had been working on a presentation on Friday that is due
this Wednesday.  When he logged in Monday morning he had 1 document in his "Documents" library.  (Redirected My Documents).  He called and I was able to see all of his documents on his ..\userprofile\username\documents network share
on the server.

We rebooted, ran a couple of GPUpdate /force commands, and my manager was able to see his documents.  The latest "date modified" looked to be 4-28-2016 around noon - which was Thursday.

He started working around 8:45 or 9 using those documents from 4-28-2016, worked until noon yesterday (5-2-2016) and saved multiple copies of his documents to his "Documents" library, where he typically saves them.  He then logged
off his workstation, went to lunch, and when he came back, he was missing specifically those documents that he had worked on.  All other files in his My Docum... Read more

Question: offline files

after much searching the internet (and this forum), ive given up looking and resorting to just asking. heres my problem:
on my computer i have a 40gb hd and a 160gb hd, i got the 160 to hold my music and my work (mainly 3d modelling and animation stuff) and the 40 for the system drive. right now i have my work stored on a network drive, but i want to make it available offline. but if i make it available offline it'll go to the default folder on the 40. is there any way to change the location of the offline folder to a specific folder on the 160? either by 3rd party program or preferably in windows itself? any info would be much appreciated! thanks!

So all you want to do is copy it from the network drive to the folder of your choice? Or do you want to be able to access the work, while you aren't online (but still on the network)?

Question: XP Offline Files

I have an XP machine which has filled the C drive with Offline Files Synchronizing.
This is something that was setup years ago, and just kicked in again this week somehow.
It has synchronized 20GB of files to the C drive. C drive is only 37GB. Windows folder is 25 GB.
I started to delete the offline files, but the process failed (a device attached is not functioning - I think that was the message).
Now I have Offline Files not enabled.
There is obviously still about 20 GB of storage on this drive, which I want to clear off, but the Offline Files Folder shows empty.

Does anyone know a way to clear up this ?

Answer:XP Offline Files

Click Start > My Computer > Tools > Folder Options > Offline Files tab > uncheck "Enable Offline Files.

Note that if the function is set in group policy, it will reset to enabled again after you log back into the network. There may be additional settings you can choose that effectively allow you to keep it from working. You may be able to unselect the server(s) that you synchronize with, etc. You may have to do this each time you log into the network depending on policy settings on your network.

Keeping your offline files in sync

When you select a network file or folder to make available offline, Windows automatically creates a copy of that file or folder on your computer.

My question is---WHERE does it save that copy? In what folder? Can I set the folder I want the copy to be in and HOW do I do it?
Thank You for any help.

Answer:using offline files

It's located in the C:\Windows\CSC folder

To change it, do the following:
Open "OFFLINE FILES" (In Win8 you hit START and just type Offline files, should be the same in Win7)
Click "Disable offline files"
Run regedit.
Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\CSC
Right-click CSC, New -> Key, and name it as Parameters.
Right-click Parameters, New -> String Value, name it as CacheLocation.
Right-click CacheLocation, then Modify.
In the Value data box, type the name of the new folder (make sure you created it) you want to create the cache, like this: \??\drive:\folder
Where it?s Windows NT format for folder path name, with drive for drive letter and folder as folder name. For example: \??\D:\csc
Restart the computer.
Open again OFFLINE FILES.
Click on Enable Offline Files.
Restart the computer.
All new offline folders will be cached and saved to that new location.

Question: Offline Files

During the week, we had a power outage...
Network went flop

Ever since then a Win2K Pro now always disconnected from teh network... After about 5 minutes a message pops up stating, you are no longer connected to <server name> in the taskbar. It's the Sync. Manager. At first boot, DHCP gives the IP and what not but then 5 mins later I get that message. Never used Offline files before. Packets still get passed but...puter goes to offline mode.

Now (actually this is someone else's puter having the problem and now I'm lookin' like a duface), I can enable and disable the using of offline files on my machine (tools>options>offline files) however, on this particular machine, that tab is not there.
Machine as stated is Win2K Pro SP2 FAT32 (not my doing).
I upgraded to SP3...tab did not show
During the 5 minutes of good network time, downloaded and installed all available critical updates (win update)... tab did not show.

What else can I do to rectify this (without re-imaging the system)??

Just installed XP Pro and have set it up on a domain. The problem I'm having now is one I've had before and posted on here, but this site no longer seems to keep all of your past postings.Anyway every time I log on or off I get the synchronise window and on selected files and folders I get a white box with two blue arrows in it, which is really annoying.I don't want to use Offline Files so I was wondering how I'm supposed to turn it off. When I go to Tools > Folder Options there is no Offline Files tab. This may be because I have a group policy disabling Offline Files but somehow XP has decided to use them and lock me out from disabling them!!!Is there another way to disable them?

My x220 tablet is haveing issues with the graphics card shutting off. I purchased my x220t about 3 months ago and I have begun to have a reacurring problem. I will be running CAD 2011, nothing 3D, and the screen will spontanneously go black. 5 seconds later, it will restart and an issue report will pop up in the bottom right and corner of the screen. This issue is a real problem since I bought this laptop for engineering and with an i5 processor, CAD sould be running fine. I did not expect the graphics card to be a limiting factor since I am only using 2D visualls right now. I have tried to find similar if others have had a similar issue but I can not find anything. What should I do? ps, I have a screen shot of the info but I am unable to post it.

I regularly use Lenovo update to check for any new drivers/updates. After an update to bios 1.25, my computer attempted to reboot, but it never really shut down. After 15 minutes of just black screen, I pulled the battery to force it off. When I attempted to reboot, no POST, just black screen. The Thinklight and green lights will flash, but nothing happens. So, I called Lenovo, and went through some basic troubleshooting which did not help. There's a 48-page discussion on the backlight bleeding of the x220 on the Lenovo forums (http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/X-Series-ThinkPad-Laptops/Faint-Ghosting-on-X220-IPS-screen/td-p/435201). There are also many smaller threads regarding problems with the x220 IPS screen and to a lesser extent the x230 screen. I recently purchased an x230 and experienced bleeding. Due to my onsite warranty IBM support came and replaced the screen- but the new one still had bleeding. Another engineer came out, brought a new back-panel (because the flex of the panel seemed to be causing it) and said "this isn't broken- I have seen lots of x220s and x230s with this problem- its a design default". Could I challenge Lenovo to provide me with an x230 IPS screen which does not bleed? I cannot believe Lenovo released/designed a laptop with such a glaring (no pun intended) fault. Has anyone here got an x230 (or x220) IPS screen where there is absolutely no backlight bleeding on a dark background?

Answer:All x220 and x230 IPS screens have backlight bleeding issue?

All X230 and X220 LG IPS will have some degree of bios bleed, it is just matter of severity.

Since user has been migrated to Vista Enterprise, offline files have not been functioning correctly. It appears to ONLY be that way for newly created files and folders. Sync log indicates that "the files are in use by another system."

All other users syncing to the same server are fine.

I've disabled Indexing, but that did not take care of it.
I've also googled the heck out of this. Nothing worked.

If I go to the actual server location and sync from there, it works without issue, but not the other way. There's a similar error for every created file or folder.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

At my job I have this one woman whose computer started acting strangely this morning.

She cannot connect to one specific network drive for more than a few minutes at a time before it boots her out and puts her in 'work offline' mode.

She can synchronize the folders to get another few minutes out of it, but is having a hard time getting any real work done because of this.

Internet and email (email is on the same server as the network drive) still work without an issue.

At first I thought this may be internet explorer's 'work offline' issue, but when none of those fixes worked, I posted here.

She is the only one in the office with this issue, so I don't think it's a problem on the server side.

Any help is appreciated,
Thank you in advance.

Hey everyone,

Our organization has decided to start rolling out Windows 10, so we have been working on creating some policies to manage the rollout. I've signed up on TenForums because I have had numerous issues with imaging/deploying/managing Windows 10, and this looks like the best resource I can find. I've been able to workaround most issues but I'm stuck with this one, wondering if anyone else is experiencing it as well?

For a long time we have been using laptops with Windows 7, and folder redirection/offline files. Essentially, we redirect the Desktop and Documents folder to a network share, and when a user logs in on a laptop it will automatically enable offline files for the redirected folders. In Windows 10 however, the folders are redirected properly, but Offline Files does not get enabled.

I've looked around quite a bit online and found solutions for some people using Windows file servers, but that doesn't apply to us (NetApp). Any thoughts on if this GPO needs to be configured differently for 10?

When we rolled out Windows 7 a few years ago we decided to redirect our users' Documents to our NAS. We also decided not to disable Offline Files for the redirected folders. That has worked surprisingly well with only occasional sync issues and lost files. Our
implementation has worked so well that users often aren't even aware when or if they are accessing the offline cache. And we don't either.  Now, changes coming to our NAS have the potential to greatly increase the size on disk of our redirected folders
and fill local hard drives with the CSC.
So we need to turn off Offline Files. We will continue to do Folder Redirection, though. Just in case there's something "stuck" in the cache that's not on their NAS folder (you know it happens), what happens to the CSC when Offline Files is disabled
by Group Policy? Does it remain intact or is it deleted?
Thanks,

Tom

Today, I installed SP2 on my parents computer (they don't believe in Windows Upddate). After installation, I enabled the Welcome Screen and Fast-User Switching, and quite amateurly unticked the "Enable Offline Files" box.

Now, all the favourites for the user of this Computer have been deleted (while mine where all stored on Foxymarks).

Does anyone know of a way to recover these lost offline files? I have an undelete utility and have searched C: for something, but i'm not particularly fantastic with computers and don't really know what to look for if anything.

Can someone please help!

Question: Win7 Offline Files

I have Win7 Enterprise on my computer, and have added my network "home" drive to the "Documents" library, however in order to do this, I had to enable Offline files.

This worked when I set it up, however it seems that the files are not syncing, as Win7 thinks I am in "offline" mode.
How can I force Win7 into "online mode" so my files can sync? I have tried going to the sync properties and the options are greyed out. I cannot locate the registry keys to re-enable them.

Has anyone else experienced this, or know how to fix it?

The computer is not attached to a domain, so there are no "group policies" being pushed.

Thanks in advance!

Hi All,

Just a quick query, I use Offline Files to sync the 'My Documents' folder of my work laptop so I don't have to go through the rigmarole of logging in through the VPN if I don't have to.

Is there a way of having Windows detect what network it is attached to, every time I bring the laptop home and put it on the docking station, it detects the home network and attempts to sync. Obviously it fails because it cannot reach the work fileserver but it is annoying having to cancel it each time, especially when switching it off as it requires the synchronisation dialog box to be closed before the laptop will switch off. (I would love to be able to hit the power button and drop the machine into my bag while it finishes shutting down as I am usually running late in the morning! )

Alternatively, any suggestions for a good online file syncing service or software, preferably FTP as I already have a secure FTP server. I would want it to run in the background and not tell me each time it can't reach the server, as I do a lot of work offline.

Cheers!

Hi All,

I am an administrator on a domain. My 'My Documents' are set in group policy to redirect to a folder on the server. My problem is that 2 or 3 times a week when I log in I am informed that I am no longer connected to the server but can work offline. The issue is that I have full connectivity with the server and I dont know why it thinks I dont. I can ping the server by IP and by machine name and by domain. I can access the folders if I give a fully qualified UNC path.

Any ideas?

There wasn't a forum called Features, Settings, Control Panel, or something of that nature so I wasn't sure where to put this.

We use a folder redirection GPO from our Server 2008 R2 machine, and offline files sync automatically when they log in while on our network. It hasn't been a problem with Windows 7 for several years. So now I'm in the beginnings of slowly deploying Win 10. The first real test is a laptop (an ASUS Transformer flip book) belonging to one of our staff. I set it up, got it upgraded, and made sure her offline files were syncing, which they were.

Last night she sends me a text, showing me that when she tried to open her My Documents folder, it couldn't access the server. My first thought was that the sync never fully completed and that those files just weren't available offline yet. So today I go in, and first of all, simply finding the Offline Files Manager and the Sync Center turned out to be a big hassle. When I hit the Windows key and type it in like I normally do, it pulls up a settings icon with "Manage Offline Files" or "Sync Center" next to it, but it takes me to a screen that only has one option called "Work Folders," which is something completely different that I'm not even familiar with. Finally I found that if I open the Control Panel, and change the view to Small Icons, the Sync Center finally shows up and I'm able to open it from there.

So anyway, I open it up, and it shows that the most recent sync was yesterd... Read more

on Windows XP I can't seem to find the enable Files Offline Tab
I thought it might be under folder options but I can't see it.

Answer:How do I find the Offline files Tab

What version of XP? Offline Files is not supported on XP Home, only Pro and MCE.

On XP Pro, it is in Folder Options, just to the right of Types. If you don't see it, it's likely been disabled by a group policy.

Start | Run, type gpedit.msc, press Enter
Expand Computer Configuration | Administrative Templates | Network | Offline Files
Make sure Prohibit user configuration of Offline Files is Not Configured, or Disabled
This can also be set on a Per User basis, so also check here:
User Configuration | Administrative Templates | Network | Offline Files
