X120e TrackPoint Scrolling is sluggish / inconsistent

Question: X120e TrackPoint Scrolling is sluggish / inconsistent

I can use the mouse weel and everything smooth but when scolling with the TrackPoint it sems to always hang for 1 second half-way,. It may happen when CPU usage is 100%, Chrome is well known for that. As I said It does not happen when using the ouse wheel so I think something could be done to prioritize the mouse driver. Look like the same problem people are havng with tackpad scrooling, Haven't tested, I'm not using it.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

The trackpoint on my x120e just stopped working, along with the accompanying buttons just below the keyboard.  However, the touchpad and its two buttons still work.  (This happened while I was using the computer -- no apparent change to system files prompted it.) I tried Fn+F8 to turn the trackpoint back on -- I can select the option but it doesn't take effect.  In advanced options, the option to turn the trackpoint on is grayed out. I downloaded and installed the latest UltraNav driver; no improvement.  I also looked in BIOS options and didn't see anything related to enabling the trackpoint. Has anyone else had an issue with this, or is it likely an old-fashioned hardware problem? Thanks for your help.

Hi, my x120e's right TrackPoint button seems to be not working right, as I have to depress very hard in a certain way in order to do any right-clicking. I'm wondering if this is a hardware problem or maybe the little rubbery nib underneath the button itself? -Alan

I have a Lenovo X120e with Windows 8. I was able to enable the trackpoint and disable the touchpad and lower buttons (which is how I prefer it) when I first got the laptop. However, a few weeks ago, the Trackpoint would intermittently stop working and the touchpad would be enabled again. It was usualy in flashes, so I didn't bother with it. Unfortunately, lately the Trackpoint has stopped working completely. I had to reinstall the driver, since the ultranav tab had disappeared from the mouse settings in the control panel. Now, however, the checkboxes for the Trackpoint in the ultranav tab are gray and I am unable to select any of them. Also, the check box to enable/disable the touchpad is gray, so I am unable to deselect it. Thoughts? This is driving me crazy!!

Answer:X120e Trackpoint Stopped Working

Hello,

I do not have my X120e in front of me right now, but I believe there are settings in the BIOS related to the TrackPoint and TrackPad.  Have you tried enabling them there, then booting into Windows and looking at the settings for the pointing device in the Control Panel?

I have a T61 that is having a problem with the trackpoint scrolling feature occasionally.  What happens is when I push the middle button, and try to scroll, the window scrolls like its supposed to, but the pointer also moves.  Then when the pointer reaches the edge of the area I'm scrolling, the scrolling stops, and I have to move the pointer back in before I can scroll again.  I have the scrollign settings configured for standard (ie, not smooth or auto-detect).  I have also set the touchpad to be for scrolling and tap zones only (I don't know whether this has anything to do with the problem).  The latest driver (7.5.17.27) is installed.  Any ideas about what else I can try? Thanks,Justin

Answer:Trackpoint scrolling problem

I remember seeing this option in the mouse settings, advanced, where it had check box to use one or the other or both in re to touchpad or the red tip mouse.. I had no issue with it, I tried to recreate your issue but am not willing to screw this one up, sorry. Try that area and also see if the mouse driver is selecting the correct one, and if there is a post bios setting for the mouse functions. Now days with usb mouse, PS2, trackpoint, touchpad, infrared, wireless, we need things simple like a carnival ring toss on to coke bottles.

One of the more persistent (of several) problems plaguing my P50 (20EN) is the spastic, herky-jerky scrolling when using the TrackPoint with middle button. This is far and away the worst trackpoint I have ever used, and I've used a lot of trackpoints over the last 20 years. There are only two TrackPoint settings on this machine, and neither is relevant to this issue:? The 'ThinkPad' tab in the Windows 10 'Mouse Properties' panel has a checkbox to enable and disable TrackPoint globally and radio buttons to select the middle button function.? The Synaptics Control Panel has a slider for controlling the TrackPoint scrolling speed. TrackPoint has always stood out on my list of reasons for buying ThinkPads in the first place, so this is issue particularly poignant for me, and, frankly, I'm close to my wit's end on this one. Please, someone tell me there exists a solution.

If you need to reinstall the Trackpoint driver for your unit, here is the link below: http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-4KMUYL Download and save this file to the desktop and the open the folder and run the setup.exe file You might also need the Trackpoint Accessibility Driver, which can be found here: http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-4Z9QVD See if installing these two drivers will help you. If the drivers are installed correctly and you are still having problems with the trackpoint scrolling, it could possibly be a mechancial issue and the part would need replacement. Let me know if this helps you any. Mark

I am using MS Office 2007 on my Lenovo X60 with 2GB RAM and Win XP Proffesional.  I cannot scroll pages in MS Word 2007 using the standard scrolling type setting in the mouse properties dialog box in the control panel.  When I change the scrolling type setting to auto-select I am able to scroll but the scrolling is so fast that I cannot control it. Moreover, the scrolling does not work at all in either standard or auto-select mode in some of the MS Office dialog boxes.  I have upgraded to the latest trackpoint driver, but that does not seem to improve the situation.  Does anyone have a solution to this problem?

Answer:Trackpoint scrolling speed on X60

I think that when you set the scrolling type in mouse properties to auto, you simply use the standard mouse-wheel click auto-scrolling feature of Office. Check if you can find any Office setting that allows you to adjust the auto-scrolling speed.

I have a t430 2342CTO with the latest ultranav drivers installed. I have seen screenshots of older versions of the driver where you can select smooth scrolling for the trackpoint. I was wondering if there is any way to enable this behavior in the current driver. Also, is there any way I can change the amount of lines scrolled by the trackpoint? Changing the windows setting only seems to affect the touchpad, not the trackpoint. Perhaps there is a registry setting or something?

Answer:Trackpoint smooth scrolling

Hi ben_jminw,

You should be able to change those settings under control panel > mousepad > unltranav.
How to use the TrackPoint center button - ThinkPad

If you're using this driver then try using a previous version.

Hi!First: this is no problem-request but a solution for everybody with the same problem. I had the problem, that TrackPoint scrolling did not work in some programs. There are some posts available about correcting this issue, but there seems to be a change in the driver, so there needs to be done some changes. I mainly will refer to this post from Elad Karako, because it has a list of programs, where scrolling does not work. This post, the same as others, recommends to edit the file TP4table.dat in the C:\Program Files\Synaptics\SynTP directory. I just updated my T540p with a 3-button touchpad and had the problem, that in some applications the TrackPoint scrolling does not work (Notepad++, Total Commander, ...)Unfortunately the rules did not work. But in newer drivers there is a further option available. The flags has been updated with the option16 Rule indicate the apply this to IBM Stick Scrolling when ScrollMethood is Synaptics. This means, that if the rule should apply to the scrolling done with TrackPoint, the flag needs to be increased by 16. I also had the problem, that the listed option WheelStd did not work in my case. After playing around I found out that Standard worked. So I updated the rules to the following and added them to the upper part of the file TP4table.dat: ; Process Explorer
*,*,*,*,*,PROCEXPL,Standard,0,25
; Notepad++ and Notepad2
*,*,*,*,*,Scintilla,Standard,0,25
*,*,*,*,*,Notepad2U,Standard,0,25
*,*,*,*,*,Notepad++,Standard,... Read more

Answer:TrackPoint scrolling not working

Excellent detective work both here and with one line scrolling; the TP4table.dat compatibility listing doesn't seem to have been updated for a long time.

When scrolling with the trackpoint, I find that the pages don't roll as smooth as the older Thinkpads did. My T410 scrolls much more smoothly than my X250, and I'm thinking that it is a driver issue. I have the latest Synaptics driver, which would be 18.1.27.14. I've tried rolling back the drivers, and it still doesn't improve the scrolling issue. Did anyone else experience this problem? Has anyone fixed it? Also, as an aside, I've found that I could not play FPS games with trackpoint. The left and right buttons don't click immediately after typing. I always get killed right after sprinting because I'm standing there, unable to shoot. Other than that, the trackpoint is suprisingly easy to use for games.

Hello everyone, I searched a bit both these forums and others but haven't found the solution to this problem I'm experiencing. I recently bought a used T430 and I've been using it for the last couple of days, trying to get used to trackpoint and all. I performed a clean windows install and installed a Win 10 education my university provides. I followed the advice on Lenovo webpage about letting Windows update do its thing first and then run the Lenovo System Update utility to update drivers as necessary. Everything's working nicely other than some issues with the trackpoint buttons (the 3 buttons just below the space bar are called the trackpoint buttons I guess?)  Anyway, the issue is that before I did a fresh install, the middle button when pushed entered the scroll mode which then let me scroll using the trackpoint. Now it still enters the scroll mode but also does a right-click when I let go. This leads to an issue where a right-click is performed at every scroll step(if that makes sense) which leads to wonky scrolling. One other issue is that the right button does nothing at all. I expected the middle button to only have scroll functionality and the right button to simply right-click.  Things I've tried so far: - Manually removed the pointer device and ran Lenovo system update again to update the UltraNav drive, and also disabled auto-driver installation of windows update. The driver version installed by System Update is 19.0.17.115.&nb... Read more

Hello, everyone! I'm having an issue with zooming inside autocad using the center mouse button on the laptop and the trackpoint. Whenever I try to zoom using the trackpoint, my drawing disappears and the entire autocad window seems to move up or down. Using the mousewheel on a USB mouse works just fine. Research about this issue reveals that it has been common for thinkpads since at least the T60, but all such questions go unanswered. Please tell me if there is a way to use the trackpoint to zoom and pan. I'd really like to enjoy the benefit of not having to take my hands off the keyboard to use the mouse.

Hi all, I pretty much always use my Trackpoint to scroll (with the middle button). But several sites I visit see horizontal scrolls as triggers to change page. So, I'll be reading a page, scrolling down via the Trackpoint -- and at some point I'll have deviated enough from vertical to trigger the horizontal behavior -- and I'll then be shuttled off to a page I don't mean to be on. Is there any way to configure the Trackpoint scroll to ONLY scroll vertically? If not, is there perhaps a way to get Google Chrome to stop listening to the horizontal scroll? Thanks, it's actually quite a PITA for some sites I visit.

Hello, Is there a way to have both - scrolling with trackpoint while holding the middle mouse button - and - being able do a middle click with the middle mouse button? I can accomplish this easily under Linux like it is described here. But under Windows it seems to be impossible. I can only have either middle clicking or trackpoint scrolling. I need both.  If anyone knows a solution to this please let me know. Walter (I have a X200s and Windows 7 x64 installed)

Yeah, this is easy in Linux can't we get some pressure to actually get this implemented properly in windows. Useability is the main reason i got a thinkpad it would be nice to know we could actually influence it in some way. (Bumping an old topic here)

Hi guys, I'm Alex, newly subscribed user to your Thinkpad forum, and here to ask for your help (if possible) ! Here is what I'm facing right now on my old (but still working like a charm) W510 :Quite happy to move away from Windows 8, I recently accepted to make the upgrade to the newest Microsoft OS : windows 10 64bits. It didn't take long to get used to it and I haven't had any issues with the programs I am using daily. But... I am having troubles with my trackpoint scrolling method. On both Chrome and Edge browsers installed on my computer, scrolling is buggy/laggy/not smooth at all. Web pages seem to "stick" a bit to much which makes jumps every time you try to scroll with the trackpoint. On the touchpad it is better but not so good either. It is really not a big issue but it can drive you a bit crazy after some time... Surprinsingly, scrolling is great on the OS. The issue is only happening on some programs. After looking around on the web, I am pretty sure that the issue is coming from the UltraNav driver. Since everything was working great on 8.1, I decided to reinstall the old driver (UltraNav 16.2.19.14). And as expected, it worked ! Scroll was back to what it was before, but not working on Microsoft Edge. I am using Chrome so I didn't pay much attention to that anyway. But since Windows 10 doesn't let you choose the updates that are installed , the issue came back when Windows Updates automatically installed the supposedly "newest a... I'm using the ultranav middle button to scroll (I live for this feature which is why I've been buying thinkpads since time immemorial) However, on the t460, scolling with the middle button/nubbin is painfully slow in Word 2007, and Adobe Acrobat/Reader is a nightmare. In Word its just slow and you have to use a lot of pressure on the nubbin (there appears to be no setting to change this). In Acrobat, it's agonizingly slow (in both Reader and Pro) and will "stick" on if you try to go to fast and just scrolling for multiple seconds after you release the button.  Stragely, the trackpad scrolling works fine in Word, though it is still bad in Acrobat.  In addition, the middle button scrolling will frequently slip and stop scrolling, sending the pointer to the bottom of the page.  Nubbin/middle button scrolling works (oddly) extremely well in Microsoft Edge... Please help! Middle button scrollig with the nubbin is the best feature on these machines.  Using: T460 Windows 10 64-bit with the latest drivers.

My question concerns middle-button-scrolling for the Trackpoint on the Yoga 260, which seems to use an Elantech device and driver. Most of the time when I try to use the middle button to scroll, it starts off trying to scroll horizontally, which I then have to overcome to scroll vertically. It takes a lot of time and makes it easy to overshoot. I've been playing around with registry settings and the INI file, but haven't been able to figure it out. I installed Windows 7 64 bit on my Lenovo ThinkPad R61 model 8918, which has Alps TrackPad and TrackPoint. However it is well known problem that when the computer is awaken from suspend or hibernation it loose ability to scroll (in my case TrackPoint stop scrolling with middle button pressed). I tested over 7 different ALPS driver versions found on the Internet, but any of the does not have scrolling type 1 for TrackPoint (standard smooth scrolling with scrollbar cursor). On couple forums people wrote that ALPS drivers from late 2010 have the problems with loosing scrolling fixed. However Lenovo Support did not release any new version of the driver for Windows 7 for model 8918 (with Alps stuff). Is it possible that someone at Lenovo would take mercy on us, users of 8918 with Windows 7, and release newest drivers from ALPS with all the stuff related to ThinkPads trackpoints???

Hi all, I really like using the Trackpoint to scroll. But an increaing number of Web sites react to horizontal scrolling by jumping to other pages. So, for example, if I'm reading down a page -- and if I need to use the Trackpoint to scroll down as I'm reading -- if I'm not perfectly vertical when I pull down on the Trackpoint, the Web site detects it as a horizontal scoll, and I get whisked off to another page. I can't be the only person having this problem? Is there some way to disable the Trackpoint from scrolling horizontally without disabling it from scrolling vertically?

I recently bought thinkpad and I also have same problem too. Is there any solution, maybe from third party tools?

I've got an x31 running Windows XP pro SP3.  Everything is fine. But when I plug in an external mouse into the PS/2 port of my media slice or docking station:  - the scrolling wheel on the mouse (logitech or sony) doesn't work  - the psysical movement required to move the cursor across the screen is silly    (nearly 10", vs 3 or 4 with a USB mouse) Ideas??

Answer:Does external PS/2 mouse w/scrolling wheel conflict w/Trackpoint?

are you using it with the ultrabase?

My trackpoint has been working fine until recently. Today it suddenly stopped moving the mouse cursor when I move the trackpoint. Instead it scrolls the window as if the middle button has been pressed down. But I did not press the middle button. The trackpoint just can't move the mouse cursor at all. I've tried rebooting without any difference. Any solutions?

I enabled the "tap zones" feature in the Synaptics touchpad settings and configured the zones to right click and middle click. I notice that sometimes the zones stop working while tapping and navigating are still ok. It turns out that scrolling with the middle button and the trackpoint somehow prevents the tap zones from working.A quick fix is to move the cursor using the trackpoint, move it again using the trackpad, then the zones will function normally. However the fix isn't permanent.I hope that Lenovo / Synaptics will address this small issue in the next touchpad driver update.

There's a special rules list for TrackPoint scrolling under "C:\Program Files\Synaptics\SynTP\TP4table.dat". Not sure how to define a rule though.

Pardon me if this is too much of a software question, but yeah, I'm trying out Firefox 6, and while the browser seems less crashy, I can no longer side scroll by holding the middle mouse button and using the Trackpoint. It's a big deal for me. Scrolling with the Trackpoint is basically my favorite feature; to me, it feels even more convenient than a touch screen. Any one else notice this issue, or know how to solve it?

Answer:Side scrolling via Trackpoint broken in Firefox 6 [Thinkpad X220]

It works for me (Firefox 6.0.2). Try updating your UltraNav driver from the Lenovo support page. The latest is fairly new, dated August 23.

Issue 1: When I vertical scroll in a web page (Chrome & MSIE) by dragging TrackPoint (stick) while holding down left UltraNav button, the cursor moves but the web page fails to scroll, or demonstrates scroll latency of about .5 to 1 second behind the stick movement.  Sometimes, I have to try a couple times to get the scrolling to occur. Issue 2: Very often I must double click on UI buttons and web page links with the UltraNav button, when I should, traditionally, only have to click once. Received the T510 about 7 days ago.  i5, Win7 64bit, integrated graphics.  I've disabled all eye candy and set theme to classic.  Updated to latest available UltraNav and display driver.  I've tried just about every adjustment in the mouse and UltraNav settings, going as far as disabling the touchpad and touchpad filters. Synaptics driver info:Driver provider: SynapticsDriver date: 3/24/2011Driver version: 15.2.19.0Download from: http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-66898File: 6hgx37ww  This is truly annoying and I'm about to return this laptop.  I hate to resort to that.  Any help is greatly appreciated.  I've used a T43 and T61 for the last 7 years at work and never had this issue.  I love T-model Thinkpads, but this is a poor experience.

Last night (4/6/2017) an automatic Windows update just now decided to install the most recent Synaptics driver (titled Synaptics - Mouse - 1/11/2017 12:00:00 AM - 19.3.4.66), which apparently is nearly 3 months old at this point.  One thing this update seems to have fixed is an issue I?ve been having with my ThinkPads for upwards of 7 years ? randomly it resets my mouse wheel 'number of lines scrolled per notch' option back to 1 (I prefer 3) pretty much daily, which is a HUGE annoyance, so I?m very grateful for this update and I?d like to keep it. However, it also completely disabled middle click scrolling with my TrackPoint (yes, I have ?Use for scrolling? checked under the TrackPoint settings).  The middle button does nothing now, unless I check ?Use as middle click?.  Rolling back the Synaptics driver to the previous one fixes this issue. Confoundingly, the TrackPoint scrolling with my ThinkPad Bluetooth keyboard still works fine. Has anyone else experienced this problem?  Any ideas how to re-enable TrackPoint scrolling on this newest driver? System details:ThinkPad P50 ? At certain relatively slow speeds the scrolling jumps huge leaps regularly (probably after evey page or so). It's very bad with Chrome and Windows explorer, not so bad but noticeable in Thunderbird. I have set the scrolling to 1 line. My Synaptics drivers are the newest 10/04/2015. Also the treshold to start scrolling with middle button and trackpoint is very high - can't be that hard to make it smooth, so you could scroll very slowly? Please fix this soon... it's impossible to live with.

On my L420, i had it set so i can move the mouse with my thumb and scroll with my index finger with the center trackpoint button.

However, the Ultranav options are different for the W541, so, (as far as i can tell) i can't find the option to replicate this.

See screenshots of my configuration.

Basically, i want my center trackpoint button to be always in "scroll" mode, without the need to press the middle button and scroll like on the L420.

For a while now, I have wondered why the virtual buttons shown in the utility http://imgur.com/Lljj1Z7 don?t function as advertised. According to the utility, I should get a left click if I depress the left are of the touchpad, a middle click if I push on the bumps, and a right click if I depress the right half of the touchpad. In my experience, I get a left click regardless of where I depress the touchpad. The only exception is when I depress the bumps in the top middle of the touchpad?when I do that, the mouse enters some weird scrolly mode where I scan scroll stuff with the trackpoint. It definitely does not emit a middle click. But, more importantly, I cannot figure out how to get trackpoint mode to emit a right click. How do I get trackpoint classic mode to work? Is there a way to downgrade the drive or use a non-lenovo branded driver to get it to behave properly? Right now, I?m relying on an external mouse just to middle click and right click. I?m using Windows 10 b10240 and, as in the post?s title, my trackpoint driver is the latest listed on Lenovo?s support site (which I think WU actually installed for me)?19.0.12.61. Why don?t the virtual buttons work and are there any other workarounds that don?t involve using a mode other than Trackpoint Classic?

Answer:T540p unable to right-click with virtual buttons in trackpoint or trackpoint classic mode 19.0.12.61

Seems to have partially fixed iteslf since Windows Update (WU) installed 19.0.16. Now the right half of my touchpad performs a right click when in TrackPad Classic mode. However, the supposed ?middle click? zone still does a weird scrolly mode instead of sending a middle click. Guess I still have to use an external mouse to accomplish a middle click when using Classic TrackPoint mode, but at least the situtaion is better than when I couldn?t right click with this mode.

Hi, I got an S230u Twist last autumn and have been really happy with it. At the time, I ordered a set of replacement rubber TrackPoint caps. When I replaced the original cap the other day, I realised that the replacement ones are about 0.5mm shorter than the original one, with the result that the H and G keys get caught on the edge of the cap; you have to hit them quite hard to get them to work. I compared all the new caps from the packet against the original one, and sure enough; they're all a little too short. They fit, but it's annoying to have to go back and make sure all my ""G"s and "H"s typed correctly.  Has anyone else had the same problem? Lenovo, could this just have been a bad batch, and if so can I return the unused ones for a replacement set that is the correct height?

Answer:S230u - replacement trackpoint TrackPoint caps are too short

If you bought them from Lenovo I'd just try and return them. If not dispute on eBay/PayPal/Credit Card. But never use poor quality TrackPoint Caps. Remember if a computer is running efficiently so is the person behind it generally.

In the respective settings there is no such options and I searched everywhere, somebody found it? Next question: In order to avoid the annoying noise of the clickpad everytime you press it, I would like to use the tap function of the touchpad while using the trackpoint to move the cursor. Unfortunately, tapping on the pad seems to be disabled during use of trackpoint - any smart hack to get this workig? Thanks to all,J

Hi. I have a Dell Inspiron 14. 2Gb Memory Core2Duo.

I can;t scroll Sideways but I can going up and down.

Thanks in advance.

Answer:Dell Touchpad not scrolling Sideways. But scrolling Up & Down

On both my Acer aspire one netbook (synaptics) and my Lenovo notebook (alps) I need to tab twice on the lower edge of the touchpad (to gain its attention?!?) and then it will scroll. Beyond that I believe you need to take a walk on the Dell support web site. There are number of 14xx models so you need to follow the steps there to find the freshest driver for your particular model. On both of mine the newest drivers have given scrolling as well as "pinching" to re-size pages, photos etc.

Answer:X120e vs. VAIO YB - why can VAIO play AC3, and X120e not

Hello,I have had my X120e for 3 days now, and wife her Sony VAIO YB for about a month.Having intensively tested and setup the two machines, my preferred device is the X120e. Display, Keyboard, the X120e beats the Vaio in my opinion! In one aspect though, the Vaio wins:We have a satellite receiver (Vu+) that receives HDTV from German and British stations. The HD signals I can stream over WiFi and watch with both laptops. However with one limitation for the X120e:The British stations won't come with Audio - only Video I can watch. After some googl'ing I learned that the British HD stations (BBC, ITV) have the Audio encoded as AC3.The setup on the laptops is comparable: Using the pre-installed Windows 7, and built-in Windows Media Player 12.What could be the reason that the X120e fails in this case? Maybe because the X120e comes with 64-bit Win7 Professional, whereas the VAIOPS: I have officially imported both laptops from U.S. to Germany for several reasons, one of them that the X120e is still not available in Germany. Same also the Vaio, not available in pink cover in Germany. When I operate the scroll bar, instead of a smooth scroll down or up the page, the scrolling occurs in jerks, making the page appear to "ripple". I am using windows XP. In addition, when I watch DVDs the crarity is not so good. It has only just started happening. Any ideas?

Answer:Strange scrolling or wobbling scrolling

Does this happen to the entire screen or portions of the screen (like a horzontal line), or just with the scroll bars?

I'd been assuming that my sluggish browsing over the last week or so was related to a combo of being on slow dialup and using Vista. However, it seems that McAfee pulled a trick on me and turned its firewall on, even though I had turned it off. Now that I have only one firewall running, I'm navigating much faster than I had recently. Would the sluggish browsing have been a likely result of the conflicting firewalls? (Yes, I do know to run only one, as well as only one resident AV app.)

Answer:Sluggish, Sluggish Browsing

Your conclusion seems logical. Each of the two firewalls examining packets and arguing with one another could certainly slow down your connexion.
Keep tabs on changes (or lack thereof) on your navigation speed.

John

I recently updated/upgraded from windows 7 to windows 10. The default mouse settings is to scroll using two fingers. I want to go back to using one finger to scroll on the right side of my mouse pad on my laptop. I have tried the settings for the mouse including the advanced settings. I clicked on device settings and then settings underneath that, which led me to a different window. When I clicked on the scrolling portion, it gave me pinch zoom and rotating.
All other forums have told me there should be a one finger scroll and two finger scroll tab under scrolling. I don't know if this is an option for 8.1, or if I am just not finding where I should be looking, but this is an issue for me.
Thank you!

Answer:How do I change my mouse settings from two touch scrolling to one touch scrolling?

Check your laptop manufacturers website for trackpad/touchpad drivers for Windows 10.
My Thinkpad in the Mouse Settings (advanced) has a section for the trackpad and I can set this so perhaps your drivers are not up to date for your device. I know a friend had to manually download those for his Dell to make that work like he wanted.

Hello,

I'm having some issues with the size of the UI. In some Windows, it seems to be "old style" and properly sized. But in other places, it seems to be following the new design guidelines and there it is way to big for me.
On the left the "old-style" properly sized, and on the right the "new style" which seems to be too big and just waste screen space. Because it is so big, it needs a scroll bar, even though it should easily fit on screen with a smaller font.

Similarly, in the Mail App, everything is just too big, so only very few emails fit on screen.

Googling, I was only able to find people having the problem the other way around. So I'm wondering if everybody else just likes it this big? While I can understand it for tablet or convertible users, for desktop users (1920x1080 @ 24") I just find it annoyingly big.

Scaling is set at 100%.

Is there any way to just get the "old style" everywhere or change the font size only for the new layout?

Thanks and Regards
Jochen

Answer:UI inconsistent and too big

MS is supposed to be transiting to the 'new' Settings style, deprecating the Control Panel.

Meanwhile we're caught in the midst of their revamp.

Similarly with their context menu style (sorry, styles).

Question: Inconsistent IE

I got a little problem with my IE7 browser lately. And it never happenened before.

The browser will freeze (and there's no way else but close it) in the order progress of the site amazon.com (for example, signing in, payment method, etc). You can see in the enclosed pic. Sometimes, it froze and come back normal. Sometimes, it doesn't. Note that it only freeze with amazon.com, not other site. Image enclosed.

So I tested with Firefox and no problem with the progress.

And also, my PC has been weird lately. I wouldn't say it's slow, but it would freeze for several secs when I right-click on the desktop (which is unacceptable for such a system). Image enclosed.

But anyway, the little problem with amazon.com has been bugging me the most, since I prfer IE7 over Firefox.

(I hate clearing the cookies, and deleting the internet temp files, because it'd give me a headach trying to remember all the passwords, and I surf web faster with the stored hints.) I wonder if that's the problem.

Any suggestion will be much appreciate.

Answer:Inconsistent IE

Too many temp internet files could be the cause, but the only way to find out is to delete them all. It would be folly to start looking elsewhere for the cause before doing that. To ensure you have a thorough clearout of those and temp files generally you should download the excellent free 'Ccleaner' from here: http://www.ccleaner.com/
You can disable cookie removal if you'd rather keep them (just untick the box for 'cookies') It also includes a Registry error-cleaner (click "Issues" in Ccleaner). That's worth using too.

Question: Inconsistent PC

My wife's PC, which she uses just for AOL and MS Word, has been very slow for the last 2 months. It started with a failed download of AOL 9.0 which never worked and I uninstalled it. She is now using AOL 8.0 Even with no network connection, Word is often very sluggish and seems to be getting worse (all operations - typing, saving files scrolling, opening Word ...). At other times it performs at normal speed. AOL Dial-up login often fails or takes a long time to connect. Even turning the PC off and restarting does not help when it is sluggish.

Question: Inconsistent WEI

I have two W7x64s installed on the same machine but each OS is installed on its own separate physical hard drive. The WEI for #1 OS is 6.8/7.4/6.0/6.0/5.9 while that for #2 is 6.9/7.4/7.4/7.4/5.9.
I wonder why there are so much difference between the two for the graphic performances.
The two HDDs are not the same model but are very similar. The one for #1 OS is HitachiHDE721010SLA330 and another for #2 is Hitachi HDS721010CLA332. Both are 1TB/7200rpm/32MB but the second one is newer model.
Has the performance of the HDD anything to do with the graphic performance?

Answer:Inconsistent WEI

The second is better although that is high. My gaming rig received 6.5/7.4/7.6/7.6/5.9.

I like Windows 8 as a concept, though it is not very well polished and implemented, in comparison to Windows Phone and Xbox. Windows 8.1 attempts to right a few wrongs, but IMHO it makes the OS even more inconsistent than it already was.
The problem of the Windows 8 UI is the lack of discoverability of important UI elements, and it shouldn't be hard to fix with a few consistent solutions. However, as a result of a lack of faith in Metro by various app teams, the problem of Windows 8.1 UI is extreme inconsistency, with each team pitching their own solution to the same problem of discoverability.
I did a little bit of UI analysis on this issue. This is a technical diagram, so it may take you a bit to comprehend, but bear with me here.An analysis of the navigation and search touch zones of 12 major apps on Windows 8 vs 8.1. Green indicate areas one can touch or click to navigate. Red indicate areas one can touch or click to search. Arrows indicate the Windows 8 "swipe from edge" gesture.
As you can see, while Windows 8 isn't exactly the most consistent, 8.1 takes it to another level. While the implementation of Metro on Windows Phone does not result in this drop of consistency in its transition from 7 to 8 but instead resulted in a few prestigious design awards, we can see that each app team working Windows 8 in Microsoft is trying extremely hard at solving the usage problems of its apps, and are throwing everything and the kitchen sink at the wall, in attempt to right the wrong... Can someone please help me. I am older person in my 60's. I just purchased a new laptop using Win 7 Pro. I attempted to set up an Administrator account but everytime I need to use administrator and right click for option, it does not work. I attempted to do a "scf \scan now, and that also did not work because I was pointed to USER. I tried to set up Homegroup, but my system says Workgroup. When I try and go co Command Prompt, it goes to USER not to Windows\System 32. Everytime I try and install a program it either tries to install in wrong place or I get error message "THE ATTRIBUTES ARE INCONSISTENT". Not sure how everything got all twisted around but things are really screwed up and I have only had the laptop for 1 week. I WOULD APPRECIATE ANY HELP. Thanks

We have three G50 laptops all very similar i3 processors memory etc and yet all three differ in so many ways, these were purchased for a charity run pre school so budgets are very tight and the laptops where aquired over and 18 month period i beleive. Because the school uses these laptops for producing the the personal reports on the children and these laptops are taken out of the school grounds we have had to ensure the drives are encrypted, so the extra cost of upgrading these to Win 10 Pro and enabling Bitlocker has been inversted. Each device was upgraded to Win 10 after there where purchased and odd things where noticed, one would not support the USB ports on bootup so the having the laptop on start with the USB pen drive with the key on would not work so a password had to be used in stead. Other two laptops suported the USB pen drives on boot up with the keys on them. All three devices have come in for a refresh build, first built fine, second will not support either USB or Password key so can longer encrypt the drive and the thrid freezes in mid build unless started in safe mode all three laptops are being re-imaged from the recovery drives on the laptops, 6 days wasted 1. why does one laptop not see the USB ports on boot up or even after the the OS has fully loaded unless the pen drive is unplugged and plugged back in.2. why does the third device keep freezing in mid build, seems like a drive problem system device driver issue but i cant would out ... Question: Inconsistent BSODs

For some time now I have been getting frequent BSODs, I mostly just assumed that it was time for a new laptop but I would much rather fix the problems if possible.

The most common BSOD error that I have been getting is the IRQL not less or equal error, however I also get random errors that are not as frequent.

I have uploaded the seven forums file to this post, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Answer:Inconsistent BSODs

Welcome
Sounds like a driver. Use the verifier to find out which one.

Driver Verifier

I'd suggest that you firstbackup your data and then make sure you've got access to another computer soyou can contact us if problems arise. Then make a System Restore point (so youcan restore the system using the Vista/Windows 7 Startup Repair feature).

In Windows 7 you can make a Startup Repair disk by going to Start....AllPrograms...Maintenance...Create a System Repair Disc - with Windows Vistayou'll have to use your installation disk or the "Repair your computer"option at the top of the Safe Mode menu .

Then, here's the procedure:
- Go to Start and type in "verifier" (without the quotes) and press Enter
- Select "Create custom settings (for code developers)" and click"Next"
- Select "Select individual settings from a full list" and click"Next"
- Select everything EXCEPT FOR "Low Resource Simulation" and click"Next"
- Select "Select driver names from a list" and click "Next"
Then select all drivers NOT provided by Microsoft and click "Next"
- Select "Finish" on the next page.

Reboot the system and wait for it to crash to the Blue Screen. Continue to useyour system normally, and if you know what causes the crash, do thatrepeatedly. The objective here is to get the system to crash because Driver Verifier isstressing the drivers out. If it doesn't crash for you, then le... Read more

You have started to get crashes after moving your computer, the first thing I would do is check to ensure the memory and add in cards have not moved in thier sockets.
Then check all the cables.

Have you installed any new software since this has started to happen.

Hi everyone, my first time posting here. I just bought an SSD and, curious to measure its performance, I use AS SSD to arrive at benchmarks for the drive. The problem is those benchmarks are fairly inconsistent. The first time I used the program (after updating to Windows 8.1) it yielded a 27 MB/s 4K read speed. I went perform some tasks and restarted my laptop; once it was restarted, I benchmarked the SSD again and this time it's barely yielding a 16 MB/s 4K read speed. I did a clean installation of Windows 8 and updated it to 8.1. Now the 4K speed stays unchanged at 16 MB/s every time I try to benchmark the SSD. When I first bought it (yesterday), the 4K speed was around 21 MB/s. The SSD currently has 103 GB free out of 119 GB. Did I damage the SSD by performing several benchmarks with short intervals? What can I do to bring its speed back to the level it was at before?

Answer:Inconsistent SSD benchmarks

Hi Joe, thank you for your response. I am not sure whether my SSD compresses data, but what worries me is that its performance worsened significantly (according to benchmarks) within a short time frame.

Hello,
This is my first post so please bear with me..
I feel very grateful to have stumbled onto this website! I have talked with MSsupport people and no help what so ever......I come to this site, do a search on XP and there are several others with this restarting problem.
Took the advise of several advisers on this site and have downloaded and run first Spybot and then Hijack This. I would like to post the log if I may for your opinion on any problems anyone may see in it. I have also unchecked the 3 items suggested in Systems/Advanced/ Settings, to prevent auto restart and show me a blue screen of death which hasn't happened so far since items were unchecked about 30 minutes ago. I usually get the same message as was posted in the archives about the physical memory being dumped, ect.
Have a new 60 gig Western Digital Hard drive and thought maybe problems would end with the new hardware, but, of course not, stayed with me like a clinging vine.
Here is my log from Hijack This.

Question: Email inconsistent

I'm running Windows XP on an older Compac laptop. Recently I'm finding that when I compose and send email it is sent but remains on my screen instead of telling me it has been sent. I also sometimes have trouble attaching a file, etc. Nothing happens when I try to attach. I believe after a reboot it will attach. This rencently started happening after I added a third party firewall "Online Armor". My Internet brousing also now slows down drastically and especially at night. I'm running Avast antivirus and Super Anti Spyware. I've turned off Windows firewall now that I'm running Online Armor. I'm running DSL but find it very slow on and off and especially at night. Thanks for any help.

I just had a Comcast tech come over and replace some connectors on some old cables, yet I still am experiencing constant ping spikes. The game runs fine for about 10s then spikes to about 500ms-1000ms ping. This makes all games unplayable. I have even tried upgrading my router and wireless adapter, but to no avail. The weird thing is, I am able to watch 1080p videos on youtube quite fine and even watch streams in the same quality, without discrepancies. I can also download at about 1-2 mb/s. I am stumped as to what is causing this issue. I can also listen to other fine on Skype, even when I disconnect from my online games, however, they can hear me be extremely choppy, due to my internet. What should I do?

Also when I run speedtests, it goes up to 50 mbps (what I pay for) then drops down to around 3-4, back to 50 and then to something like 20. I can see the inconsistencies just through the speed test. I have also noticed that when I check my wireless connections available sometimes, all of the connections disappear (nothing to connect to). I have already updated my wireless adapter drivers, but that doesn't seem to fix it.

So basically i have a new fujitsu laptop that is around a week old. The first couple days were fine, but on the third day the internet went down on the laptop. I went to check my router( I am on the second floor, router on the first), and everything was fine and when i came back up the internet was back.
Lately, it's been happening again and again, and usually gets resolved very quickly, but still really frustrating. None of the other computers in the house are having a problem. So today it goes down for a longer time and i search around online and try to solve it, I turn my router off and back on and sure enough the internet came back. It's ok for 30-40 minutes before it goes down again.
On the connection page, it will go from "connections are available" to "connecting to network" to "Identifying... no internet access" and it just repeats. I'm on a

I have a Netgear router, a desktop unit and a laptop (XP Home) with a wireless PCMCIA card. Yesterday, I formatted the laptop and am having trouble establishing a connection to the wireless network. The icon in the systray shows excellent signal strength, yet the browser can't find the Internet. Occasionally, it can, but that only lasts for a minute or two. The desktop unit works fine, just as before. Any suggestions?

I cannot understand what has happened to the wireless connection on my laptop. I connect via a router connected to my desktop. When I first set this up the connection was usually established immediately during the startup routine. Now it often won't connect at all even I if take the laptop very close to the router transmitter. Other times it connects okay. The signal strength is reported as 'excellent' wherever I locate the laptop.Clicking on repair the connection sometimes works despite the fact that the repair routine always says the repair could not be completed because the DNS cache could not be cleared. It also reports that my IP address is 'invalid'.Any suggestions would be very much appreciated.

Hello everyone

I've been having issues with my internet connection past couple of weeks (BT infinity in the UK). I'm currently using windows 7 64 bit. The connection speed has been good (70down 20 up), however I find that every 5ish minutes the connection hitches up, network utilization goes to 0, web pages will hang, warcraft and diablo 3 just lock up with 10k+ latency and videos/streams will sit buffering till I refresh. After a couple minutes if I refresh the pages and restart the games everything goes back to normal, until it hitches again. I'm not sure if its intermittent drops in connection or a bottleneck. I've managed to fix the majority of the issues by buying a netgear D7000 modem/router and chucking the home hub 5 across the living room. Streaming and buffering are a lot better on my devices, but the issue of browser, games and streaming/videos still persits.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,

I've acquired an old AMD 64 Athlon that was going to be thrown out by my employer, the reason being that it does not start up consistently. However, when i brought it home, it was fine, until a couple weeks ago.

Since then I had to try 3 or 4 reboots to get it going each day, and currently, I cannot start the Windows XP Professional at all.

The problem occurs after the Windows XP logo (with the scrolling loading bar) disappears. A dark blank screen appears just hangs there, and the computer stops responding. During a normal start-up, this dark screen usually turns blue in a couple of seconds, then everything is fine from there.

One more thing. I have tried a windows startup disk and last known good configuration. Both with no success. Booting into safe mode did not help either. The machine stopped responding after (or during?) loading Mup.sys

I am wondering whether it is a software problem or a hardware one.

Any suggestions?

TIA

Yuan

I've been having internet troubles for quite a while with my desktop.

I'm running windows 8.1, and am having trouble with my homes wifi. I have no trouble connecting, and all the speed tests I have used say that I have a fantastic connection. However, when I browse (on any browser) or game, my connection is "laggy". One minute I can be streaming or gaming online without a hitch, the next I'll be watching my connection time as while trying to connect to google. I never actually drop from the network, it just seems to stop working, and then periodically resume.

What makes this extra strange is that if I'm "active" my connection stays active. For example, I just went to speedtest.net to test my stats. I clicked run test and nothing, it sat there for about a minute. Then I went to my facebook page and scrolled down and suddenly the test is up and running. Or earlier today when I was trying to update drivers, and my download had succesfully started, throught the entire download I had wonderful internet connection, and was able to play online the entire download. However once the download ended, I started lagging and disconnected from the game. All the while my network connection stayed at full bars.

Thanks in advanced for any help you can offer!

This is happening on both my computers, a laptop with Windows 7 which is connected to the net with a D-Link router

and also my Apple Tiger Snow Leopard which is connected with an Ethernet cable but I guess it all goes to the router as this is the computer I initially set up the router with.

I just installed the router about a month or so ago and its been working fine, amazingly enough since I have sucky luck/track record using routers.

About 36 hours ago I started getting this message when I'd try to open a new web site, but especially it happened with my yahoo mail. It does not seem to be confined to Firefox, I switched to Safari and it happens with that as well.

Server not found

Firefox can't find the server at www.homepreservationnetwork.com.

Check the address for typing errors such as
ww.example.com instead of
www.example.com
If you are unable to load any pages, check your computer's network
connection.
If your computer or network is protected by a firewall or proxy, make sure
that Firefox is permitted to access the Web.
It seems to me it started after I deleted cookies. It's driving me nuts, everything is going along fine and then it starts all over again.

I can load the page, I can't load it - I can be on the net on one site and get the not connected on another tab/site. Sometimes its all the tabs, sometimes part of them, I haven't a clue how to fix this or where to start?
HELP PLEASE!

Answer:INCONSISTENT CONNECTION TO NET

Sounds like it the proxy settings have changed.
Go into inernet connections.
Make sure the never dial a connectino is checked.
Then go into Lan Settings. (tab towards the bottom right)
Make sure connect automatically is checked.

Make sure there is nothing checked by the proxy server.

Question: inconsistent wifi

Hi all,

Apologies if this is the wrong forum for this -- I'm not so savvy with this stuff.

I've got a problem of inconsistent wifi, but I think the problem could be with my computer (an Asus laptop with Windows 7), since the wifi on my iPhone works much better and more consistently. Were I to upgrade the wifi speed would that fix the problem do you think? It seems intuitive to me, but I had a friend whose wifi was too fast for his computer to handle, which also caused connectivity problems. How can I check or find out my computer's capabilities and compare them with the wifi that I've got? Or, does anyone have other ideas?

Any help would be very appreciated. Many thanks.

Hello all. I've got a Motorola SB5100 modem and a brand spankin' new Netgear WGR614 wireless router. I'm having a jumpy online gaming experience (Battlefield 2 and Medal of Honor to be exact), with pings ranging from 30-300ms. Most of the time I'm getting about 3,500 kb/s from various test servers across the country, but sometimes it gets below 1,000. My service is advertised as 4,000 up 500 down. Some could say blame Katrina, but I've had service since almost a month after the storm and the connection was just dandy for a few months after the storm. It seemed like one day it just pooped out, that was about 3 months ago. It's so bad that I can't play games. I've tried placing the computer outside of the router firewall- no luck. When doing a tracert I receive bad pings (<120ms) from just about every router along the route except the mine. Could it be a bad modem or is there any other way I can safely clear up the connection?

Thanks,
Bryce

Toshiba laptop with WinXP SP2. This PC belongs to a lady in real estate and she uses an online postcard making site that is tied in with both Print Shop and Prudential. She builds postcards using pictures of properties and the info about the property (like price, acreage, etc). The postcards can then be printed or posted to any number of real estate sites. The problem she's having is that sometimes in mid-postcard-build, the PC will BSOD and reboot. It happens at different points during the building process, and doesn't happen with every build, maybe 25% to 50% of the time (it varies). But today, it crashed every time she tried to build a postcard, but always in different places during the build process. This BSOD only happens with postcard building and does not happen with anything else, anywhere, ever. She didn't know the BSOD number, and we couldn't replicate a crash with me present to see it. I looked through the event viewer and posted a screen shot below of an error that occured numerous times today. I spoke with the PC owner and she confirmed the times are when she was working on the web site (it's called xpressdocs dot com). So, anyone have any ideas? There was NOTHING at the MS Knowledge Base.....

Thanks!

After a new computer build and XP install, my ROM drives (one Sony CD-RW, one Pioneer DVD-RW) are acting strange. For all the driver CD's, they read them perfectly, but for all the game CD's I'm putting in either of them, it either doesn't read anything at all, or it will get half way through the install and give a data error. A firmware update doesn't look possible because neither drive is supported by either company anymore. One thing that may be the problem is the fact that I didn't install the nForce4 IDE drivers. I've read that they were filled with bugs, so I left them out. Should I try the IDE driver install or is there another solution?

I recently bought and installed the CRYORIG C7 for my AMD-FX 6300. I had intentions of overclocking, but the motherboard was acting weird. But my question: across three different pieces of software, my cpu temp has two different temperatures. Speedfan shows a averagely hot temp (40C+), Speccy shows the expected temperatures, (approx 30-33C average) meanwhile HWMonitor shows both of these temperatures, but under different tabs, the Speedfan temp displaying under motherboard temps, then the speccy temp under cpu temps. Keep in mind this is while the PC is mostly idle (with the exception of a few tabs in chrome.
Here is a pic of the statistics:

FYI, I have no idea what AUX is in speedfan. From what I read, it's irrelevant.

Additional info: I use W7, it crashes mostly whilst playing games but can happen at any time really but it is inconsistent. My computer is very dusty on the inside so it's due a good cleaning if that's of any importance.

I have built a pp presentation. It works fine. Then the .avi movies stop working. I can get sound on the slides and then the sound doesn't work the next time I start the presentation. I can get it to work again and then it doesn't. The part that is malfunctioning is the sound and .avi.

Approximately 6 months ago the computers adapter went bad and it took over 4 months to afford another. When I finally got the adapter and recharged the system the way the manual said I turned it on and a black screen came up saying ****RTC battery is low or checksum is inconsistent**** Press {F1} key to set date and time. I tried this but no luck. The computer is out of warranty but after telephoning Toshiba they said the problem was the RTC Battery so I ordered it then took the computer into Best Buys Geek Squad. They kept the computer for 45 minutes. I told them that the RTC Battery I had purchased was non-refundable so hopefully this was infact the problem. Upon my picking it up the Geek Squad they said the new battery didnt fix the problem as he was still getting the same message that I had been getting. I am devastated. I dont have the $ to have it diagnosed. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I am also wondering why the Geek Squad wouldnt have just left the new battery in if it was put in to begin with and also wouldnt the new RTC battery need to be charged after putting it in to make a difference. So I telephoned them and they said they were able to check RTC battery without actually putting the new RTC Battery in. I cant even get anything at all to load so I am unable to even get to the bios screen. Any help with my Toshiba Sattelite A15-S127 with windows XP purchased new on 8-23-03. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I am on a JANET network connection and _should_ have extremely fast net access. In fact the connection can (momentarily) acheive very reasonable download speeds, but most of the time the connection appears to be doing nothing at all - activity is very sporadic and unreliable.

Borrowing a colleague's pc (less powerful than mine) and using the same network socket proved that there is nothing wrong with the connection itself (consistent download speeds of c400kbs from linuxiso.org), and the problem must be something to do with the way the connection is set up on my computer.

When I asked the tech support people here about it they poked around with lots of obscure-looking dialogue boxes before shrugging their shoulders and saying they couldn't see anything set wrongly in terms of the local network servers etc, so I think the problem is entirely local to this machine - something to do with the os?

System is athlon xp1800/512Mb/xp pro. Startup list is clean from rubbish; temp files etc deleted regularly; performance fine in other respects.

Any ideas? thanks in advance.

Answer:very inconsistent web performance

just in case this is useful:
the LAN connection i use is via a proxy server.

I use Internet Explorer 6.0.2600....

cache of temporary files is cleared regularly.

the problem is as bad with my internal email as with external WAN http transfers.

The problem seems at it's worst when downloading larger files - text seems ok-ish but anything else sometimes may not even begin to download before timing out.

Clicking on a link repeatedly often helps: a web page which would not load with one click will often pop up very quickly with

It's as though requests from my computer are scheduled at a low priority and don't get looked at unless i make a fuss by clicking repeatedly!!

Anyway, thanks for any help given!

Answer:Inconsistent Size

It's because it was compressed as an AVI and you have just decompressed it.
