x120 - Synaptics driver issues! Trackpoint not working

Question: x120 - Synaptics driver issues! Trackpoint not working

Okay so i've been struggling to find a fix to this and Lenovo support hasn't really been too useful either. Basically the trackpoint is having issues working even with the newest bios, etc. and synaptics driver. It also is having problems with the old driver too?? Could it be in conflict with the new bios update? Lenovo Support gave me the advice to reformatte as it is a "software" issue and to repeat the same above process. Yet the problem still persists. What steps should I try next? Lenovo support seems reluctant to give me a hardware exchange Thanks in advance, any advice is open to testing! I'm just fed up with new drivers having bugs like this.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Forgive me for cross-posting, but quite a while ago I asked this on the ThinkVantage Technologies board here and have only gotten "Me Too" adds to the thread. I'm hoping ths board and its moderators may be more responsive. I have the latest Synaptics driver V.16.2.5.0 dated 7/5/2012, installed via System Update on a T520 running Win 7 Pro 64 bit. I prefer to disable the TouchPad and only use the TrackPoint. No matter where I disble the TouchPad, either in the context menu of the notification icon or in the Control Panel Applet, the TouchPad  is always re-enabled on a clean start or re-start. I have manually uninstalled the driver and re-installed the driver to no avail. Since others are having this problem, I was wondering if a fix is in the works.

Answer:Synaptics TrackPoint Driver Does not remember settings.

Yeah I'm having that too with the same driver but on T420s with Win7 64bit Pro also.Fully update etc.

Last night (4/6/2017) an automatic Windows update just now decided to install the most recent Synaptics driver (titled Synaptics - Mouse - 1/11/2017 12:00:00 AM - 19.3.4.66), which apparently is nearly 3 months old at this point.  One thing this update seems to have fixed is an issue I?ve been having with my ThinkPads for upwards of 7 years ? randomly it resets my mouse wheel 'number of lines scrolled per notch' option back to 1 (I prefer 3) pretty much daily, which is a HUGE annoyance, so I?m very grateful for this update and I?d like to keep it. However, it also completely disabled middle click scrolling with my TrackPoint (yes, I have ?Use for scrolling? checked under the TrackPoint settings).  The middle button does nothing now, unless I check ?Use as middle click?.  Rolling back the Synaptics driver to the previous one fixes this issue. Confoundingly, the TrackPoint scrolling with my ThinkPad Bluetooth keyboard still works fine. Has anyone else experienced this problem?  Any ideas how to re-enable TrackPoint scrolling on this newest driver? System details:ThinkPad P50 ? Today I used ThinkVantage Update to download system updates from Lenovo.Optional updates included "Synaptics UltraNav Driver for WinXP and Win7- WW-" version 15.2.14.0which was downloaded and installed. Now the trackpoint icon in the notification area is gone.Clicking on the Mouse section in the Control Panel brings up an error window:"Synaptics Pointing DeviceUnable to connect to Synaptics Pointing Device Driver. If you have installed another PS/2 Pointing Device Driver pleaseuninstall the Synaptics driver by clicking on the Yes button. You thenneed to reinstall your pointing device driver for your external device again.Do you want to uninstall the Synaptics driver now?Yes / No"Clicking on No takes me to the usual looking Mouse Properties window, with 5 tabs including "Pointer Options".Clicking on that produces the normal Motion, Snap-to and Visibility subwindows. But the Trackpoint tab is now gone. The trackpoint still works fine and the trackpad is now on and also works.(Before all this happened, I had the trackpad turned off.)Why has this happened? How can I get the trackpoint icon back in the Notification Area? How can I get control back over the trackpoint motion, whether or not the trackpad is operational, middle button scrolling etc?Anyone got any ideas?

I think the driver failed to install properly. Uninstall and reinstall the package.

Hi folks,

I just upgraded my father-in-law's HP G70 laptop to Win7 Home Premium 64-bit. It is relatively new but had Vista on it. It was an "upgrade" and it appears to have preserved everything pretty well. A large number of updates have ben applied successfully via Windows Update. But -

There's a "virtual scrolling" feature on the trackpad, which no longer works. All the Point Device Properties applet choices seem to be correct... I am not sure why it doesn't work. Anyone got any similar experiences or theories why it wouldn't work?

Hi - I buy Lenovos because of their trackpoint.  My most recent Lenovo is an X1 Carbon.  I was much surprised to note that the X1 appears to be the first ThinkPad that will no longer allow me to turn off the touchpad from the Mouse Settings.  Never mind - I disabled it for good in the BIOS.  (I would like to have the Mouse Settings back because I occasionally allow touchpad users on my laptop and they simply cannot cope.) Anyway, from day #1 of ownership of this laptop, I noticed some very odd behaviour of the trackpoint:  It simply "wanders off".  It likes the left margin a lot, and the top left corner still more.  It is possible to force the cursor out of this position (by pushing hard against the trackpoint) but as soon as I let go of the trackpoint again, it wanders back. Thing is, the problem will go away after a while.  "a while" may be anything between 10 and 60 secs.  I thought it might be a h/w bug - the trackpoint perhaps being "stuck" and needing to relax - but it occurs so often that I am more inclined to thing it is a driver bug. I believe to be on the latest driver 19.3.4.99 so consider this post as a heads-up - something is still not quite right here. PS:  I am not a geat fan of reboots.  So I have disabled Updates on my Win10Pro.  I was most recently forced into a reboot (first time in 3 months or so) because whenever I clicked the middle mouse button, my screen would turn off.&nbs... That's all right, everything is set up and managed in the whole deal, except that the behavior of the middle button at the touchpad is not configurable and always operates on a scroll.Those. in the latest version of the drivers, this option has a check box, and there, only the behavior of a button it affects in any way, even to put - at least not put - scrolling! The only solution to remove the drivers synaptics and work under the standard windows driver for the mouse, but it is not convenient - every day this piece of *** is trying to roll the same curve of the driver and to please me broken middle button, which the browser is much more necessary to function as a middle mouse button (opening and closing tabs). However, can someone scroll function is very necessary, but obviously not for me, please add the ticket to synaptics, cause they the one, who coukd fix the bug.

I installed on a U350 Win7 64-bit the new Synaptics driver, v15.2.7 which have Scrybe Gesture Workflow Technology. I restarted the system and saw that the touchpad was working OK, except Scrybe software which does not work at all, launching any of the programs/internet shortcuts. So I uninstalled the driver and I'm looking only for the Synaptics driver, not bundled with Scrybe software. Do you have a download link for 64-bit please? Thanks.

Hi guys, Running the latest driver dated from the 18th of December (16.2.19.2) : http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/detail.page?DocID=DS019164 Basically for some iterations now the Synaptics driver has been a bit poor, it won't remember settings across *some* reboots with no logic as to which reboots it does lose its settings on.Also and this is my reason for creating a specific post - has anyone else noticed that the driver is initiated right at the end of the boot procedure, I'm sure it was not normally like this, but it now takes some time for my sensitivity settings to be applied and the Ultranav scrolling - some 30-40 seconds after the Desktop has booted in - it seems to load right at the end of the chain. This definitely wasn't the case going back 6 months or so, as I've never noticed or remembered having to wait for the Synaptics part of the mouse driver to load. Is there a fix in the works as this driver has clearly fallen into disrepair recently for the T420s owners (and probably other X2X series owners). Am I the only one experiencing lagging of the driver being fully functional after boot ? I've completely wiped the driver from my system purged the inf files from the windows system area and re-installed from scratch but it's still the same. Any feedback or discussion on this point would be great. I see others have some success loading the generic drivers from the Synaptic website, this is ideally not a route I wan... Read more

Yesterday my touchpad was suddenly turned on and I tried to disable it with the settings I always used (configuration screen) However, when i tried to open the control zone for it, it told me it couldn't connect to the driver. I decide to try and reinstall the driver, but it said another driver was already on my computer. I could delete it within the program files on the configuration screen, but there was nothing. So I couldn't deinstall it at all. Its really annoying because I never use my touchpad and my hand keeps brushing over it, so my mouse or text keeps going away.  Please I would like a solution. I can add files to what my screen keeps saying; but it's all in dutch. (Also my smart connect technology keeps flashing a yellow triangle and I have no idea what I have to do against that)

I found a software bug for synaptics driver.  I am using the latest: 18.0.7.40, 5/26/2014, windows 8.1. The bug is related to unreliable middle clicking (not to be confused with TpScroll ), when the user middle clicks on the trackpoint, the OS doesn't register it.  It is possible this is a settings issue, maybe it's a "feature".  If so, can someone provide instructions on how to change it. It seems the synaptics firmware will only pass a middle click to OS if the pointer moves at the same time.  I have not tried this on Linux. To reproduce errant behavior I (this will NOT register a middle click)1. make sure middle clicks are enabled in the mouse properties and TpScroll is off2. make sure you have an application that works with middle click or displays L/M/R click state received by the OS (I am using X-Mouse button control)3. with finger clear of trackpoint, middle click with thumb4. Firstly I'll explain the freezing issue (this is now the 3rd time I've typed this, as the first two times my laptop froze before I finished!)I run my laptop with the battery at 100% and plugged in and that's fine; as is running it on battery. The problem arises when my battery is low and I plug it into recharge. Soon after it's running on a/c the screen will go black and only way to shut down is by holding the power button. If I try to restart it too soon, the indicator lights next to the power button will illuminate, but the screen will stay black. Usually after 5-10 minutes it'll boot to the IBM screen & boot the rest of the way, but not too long into normal operation it'll go black again (sometimes hitting ctrl/alt/del will bring the screen back but it would be very distorted (pixilized) and would go black again and reboot. What could be causing these problems while recharging the battery? I've tried this with a couple different batteries (both OEM IBM) and it does it with both.  Secondly, both left and right "mouse" buttons are now nonfunctional (though the middle button of the track points works.) I have the latest version of Ultranav Wizard and all the buttons are enabled. The touch pad and trackpoint ball work fine, just the 2 left and 2 right buttons do not. What could be the culprit for this issue? Luckily I have a usb mouse so that's what I'm using for the time being.Message Edited by GoalieFergy53 on 02-14-2009 02:30 PM

I'm having a really annoying scrolling issue with the touchpad on my Lenovo X250 (Windows 10). The sensitivity of scrolling is dramatically decreased following the use of trackpoint scrolling. Example, say I have a program like Chrome open to a web page. Using two finger scrolling on the touchpad it takes maybe 2.5-3 swipes to get to the bottom of the page. I then hold down the middle button above the touchpad and use the trackpoint to scroll. Now that that is over I go back and try the touchpad again. This time it takes me 10-12 swipes to get to the bottom of the page. Scroll rate is already turned up to max in the synaptics settings, nothing has changed. Scrolling behavior will now remain this way until I restart the computer. Can someone please provide a solution?

Additionally it seems that the trackpad will randomly become unresponsive at time as if it "sticks". I remaped caps lock to CTRL and I cannot use the trackpad while holding it down, the mouse freezes. All around not a great experience with this driver.

Hello - I have a Thinkpad X60 Tablet PC. I just installed from scratch Windows 7. When looking into the device manager I see that the Trackpoint has an issue. The actual issue reported is - Device cannot be started. I upgraded the driver with the latest version available on the Lenovo Support site. It helped once, but after rebooting the thinkpad, the trackpoint was back in a not workable stage. Anyone had the same issue ?

Hey, guys. I've upgraded my G470 to windows 8 and, since that, the Synaptics driver is not working anymore. Everytime I install the driver, I recieve this message (found it on the internet, from a person with the same problem): http://www.eightforums.com/attachments/f1/f23/14560d1357816078-unable-connect-synaptics-pointing-dev...  "Unable to connect to synaptics pointing device driver". Then, I have to uninstall it, loosing all it's functions. I've tried to upgrade to the latest version (16.3.8.8), but it didn't work. Is there a way to fix it? Thanks.

Since I received my Inspiron 17 5000 (5749), Win8.1 x64 the Synaptics touchpad works but the driver settings do not. When I go to modify settings from the control panel, clicking on the Synaptics DELL Touchpad link/button, nothing happens. I tried going directly to the executable in c:\program files\synaptics and it will launch but when I click on three of the four buttons in the GUI, nothing happens. When I click on the first one it crashes the application. I have tried installing, uninstalling, and reinstalling the driver to no avail.
I found that I am not alone in this. There is a post on:

dellwindowsreinstallationguide.com/driver-sets/dell-touchpad-drivers/
which says:

Hello, I updated my OS to Windows 10. Everything works perfectly except of trackpoint/touchpad. The first issue is really a critical one - trackpoint buttons are practically useless. Single button click causes the mouse click event multiple times - for example opens 6 new cards in a web browser instead of one. I've found another post here describing in detail exactly the same problem but the author didn't get any response, neither from HP nor the community: http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Hardware-and-Upgrade-Questions/HP-Elitebook-8570w-built-in-mou... The driver delivered with Windows (which is also listed as compatible with Windows 10 on HP's 8570w support site http://h20564.www2.hp.com/hpsc/swd/public/detail?sp4ts.oid=5257503&swItemId=ob_152050_1&swEnvOid=419... version 19.0.12.0, causes the problems I mentioned earlier. The updated one from Synaptics website (19.0.19.1) additionaly prevents the OS from detecting the middle button... Additionally, the only gestures I can use are the basic ones - no advanced 3- or 4-finger ones (please don't tell me that the hardware is incompatible because similar gestures worked on Windows 8.1 I used earlier). I have a dual boot with Win10 and Linux and on Linux everything works flawlessly, so it's definitely not a hardware problem What should I do to make my touchpad and trackpoint fully functional?

When I turned on my X41, it failed to respond to the TrackPoint button. I had to hook up a USB mouse. I downloaded the TrackPoint drivers from the Lenovo website and installed them. It prompted me to restart, which I did. When Windows came back up, TrackPoint still did not work. It prompted me to restart again, which I did. At this point it began working normally. However, if I shut the computer down or restart Windows, TrackPoint again ceases to function and I have to re-install the drivers, restart, and restart again to get it to work. I checked the ThinkPad Configuration and set it to both Automatic and Enable, neither worked. I check the BIOS and it is enabled there. It does not matter whether a USB mouse is connected at startup; it behaves the same either way. The error shown in the device manager is: "Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)." Windows XP SP 3.

Exactly the same problem.  I get thi sthink out of the cupboard ebvery few months and fire it up to do some job or other and the trackpoint never works.  I get so tired of the thing I just usually put it away again but hey, it cost a lot of money and it shouold work. I playe the reloading driver game a year or two back but it makes no difference.  Loading  SP2 helped briefly and I'd load SP3 if I could get the darned thing to do anything. I guess I'll have to take a USB mouse home and try things out.

Trackpoint + dragging is still not working with the Ultranav middle button as of 16.2.19.2 driver. It's an extremely important function for any 3D graphics program. With the Lenovo driver it's not possible to use the middle button + trackpoint to navigate in these programs! Lenovo, please fix this bug. It's working perfectly if I install the latest Synaptics driver. It's only happening with Lenovo's driver. Using Synaptics driver is not an option, because it has no guard against keyboard typing + touchpad accidental clicking. Test:Testing is very easy.1. Set your middle button behaviour to "None".2. Above an empty area of your desktop, click the middle button + try to move the mouse pointer with your trackpoint. The pointer isn't moving! It's the same thing what happens in any 3D graphics program! You cannot navigate your camera, unless you use an external mouse! Fix:Please fix it. Just don't stop the trackpoint pointer when someone clicks the middle button in "None" settings. System: Using a W520 for the reference.

I am not a professional CAD user, but I too want to be able to use the middle button as if it were a normal mouse. There is a lot of software that utilize the middle mouse button and can't handle the silly scroll feature. Did you find a work around? You mentioned something about Synaptics.

The Trackpad is unusable on my Thinkpad Yoga 260. When I try to use it it doesn't respond most of the time. Strangly though when I use the very tip of my finger it does work. To me that sounds like the palm rejection is too harsh. Also the scrolling gesture doesn't work if I place my fingers vertically. It does work if I place them horizontally). The Trackpad is from Elantech. I tried changing the driver settings, re-installing it and nothing helped. The problem with the Trackpoint is that when I try to scroll vertically using the middle button the scrolling symbol often first shows up horizontally and I need to press the trackpoint hard to get it to scroll. This all on Windows 10. I am thinking that this is all a driver issue because I tried out Ubuntu and there it works without problems also uninstalling the driver gets the Touchpad to work but the gestures don't work then. But if this is a driver issue shouldn't everyone have this problem?

Hi,

I've just upgraded from Windows XP Home SP2 to Windows Vista Ultimate on my Toshiba Satellite A100.
I was wondering where I could download a driver for Synaptics touchpad that works?

I tried the generic drivers from Synaptics' website, but they do not install completely (the second component always fails to install).
Then I tried the ones from Toshiba's website, but The Vista-compatible ones display an error that says error code "#5B4 @10".

Then I tried The Windows XP-compatible drivers, and they work perfectly, except the fact that I cannot configure enhanced features such as virtual scrolling and tap zones.
I click on the icon in the tray, click on The Device Settings tab, and whenever I click on The Settings button nothing happens.

Any help?

Answer:Satellite A100: Where to get a working Synaptics touchpad driver for Vista?

Hi

Usually the driver from the Toshiba page should be fully valid and should works.
Please note that there are different A100 series and if you download any drivers, be sure that you choose the right drivers for the right notebook series.

Did you check if the touchpad settings can be set and changed in the control panel??
As far as I know the touchpad properties can be set in the ?Mouse? option which can be found in the control panel!!!

In the ?Device settings? tab you should select the ?synaptics touchpad? and press ?settings?.
New window will pop up and you will find many options controlling the touchpad settings!!!

Greetings,

I have recently Install Windows 8 Pro, I have Sony Vaio VPCEE3J0E. Initially, I downloaded Sony's Pointing Driver (Alps) - 7.107.505.106 and it was just for basic touchpad function.
However, I found about Synaptics and downloaded the latest Synaptics V 16.2.21 and installed it.

Now once I go to my Control Panel ==> Mouse ==> Synaptic Properties, it shows nothing, there isn't any option for touchpad gesture etc.

I don't know why it isn't working but I think it should have worked. Please if anyone could help me.

Thanks.

Is it that my notebook doesn't support Synaptics drivers

I am running Windows 10 on an Acer and recently downloaded and installed the update for the Synaptic touchpad (January 17, 2017).  After rebooting my laptop, I can use the touch pad to move the cursor when logging in, but once the system as loaded,
I cannot move the cursor using the touch pad.  I can left-click and right-click, and shrink and expand on the touch pad, but have no control over the cursor.  I currently have a mouse attached to the computer in order to move the cursor.

Answer:Synaptics Touchpad Driver problem - no appropriate driver to be installed (G580 20150)

hi Naigen,

Thanks for Posting!

Were you able to check your touchpad settings before the upgrade if you have Synaptics or Elan touchpad?
As per the Support download site, G580 could have either Synaptics or Elan
Elan touchpad, as per support site does not have a driver yet for windows 8.1 and still runs with the Windows 8.1 generic driver

Formatting my B570 Laptop I realized that the latest Synaptics driver for my trackpad doesn't contain all of the neccessary settings - Specifically the "slide zone" options are missing (The ones that let's you disable the "slide charm" behavior when you move the finger from the right edge inwards) Does anyone happen to have an older driver lying around for it? The control panel layout has changed - I'm looking for a version that predates their "animated video/image" layout.

Yeah I have the T61p-A24. The microphone isn't working for me. I am trying to use skype and talk to my family. I tried a few different drivers and rolling back a few times. All of a sudden yesterday I could hear myself through my speakers. I didn't have any programs running. I just heard myself, and there was a big echo feedback sounding like the mic was on high. I saw through settings that the mic was working, but it wouldn't turn off. Now that it is turned off mysteriously, I can't get it to work like before. I didn't try it on skype when it was working. I just want it to work. I have heard through other posts in other forums that this is not just my problem that it is just sheer luck you are the lucky one to have the problem. Please I need this fixed. Answer:Microphone not working correctly / Working out of nowhere / Driver issues

My first question I would want to figure out is if this is hardware or software related. If it was mine, I would swap a harddrive from a similar working model and that would tell me immediately if your hardware was working, but if you don't have one to swap, then other alternatives would be needed. One option is to install a second (backup) windows version. I do this on all my computers, it comes in very handy when you can reboot into a different instalation at any time if you have a problem and either need to test your hardware, or you need to use the system imediately and don't have time to fix any issues it may currently be having.  I'd say it's very likely you have either a bad driver, setting, or corrupt files on your system, but diagnosing this in a forum post isn't really possible, but if you do have hardware failure, then I probably have any part you may need to fix it, so hopefully we can track this down. I'd also suggest you consider doing some maintainance on your cooling system. If your unit was built prior to August 2008, then you may be at risk of GPU failure which can often be prevented by cleaning your cooling system and monitoring temperatures. This has nothing at all to do with the microphone issue, but  it could save your system board from failure, so I thought I'd mention it.

it only does this sometimes which is why it's so annoying :/ So, I boot up & start using my laptop, trackpoint scroll (middle button) is working fine but then it just stops working after 5mins or 1/2hr it hasn't actually done this in over a month but today it did it & a reboot did not fix it   I've had 2 Lenovo Tablet PCs before this one & none of them ever did this

Answer:Trackpoint Scroll stops working after it has been working after bootup, intermitant

I know this is old post but...This sounds like a driver issue or a hardware issue. First verify your type of trackpad than download and reinstall the trackpoint software from Lenovo from here Drivers see if that helps. If this does not help this might be a hardware wear issue this laptops are 6 years old. I have one myself but I use Linux on mine.

Question: Trackpoint Issues

Hi, Just recently my trackpoint in my T61 stopped responding after having a little water in my keyboard near the left function and shift keys.  Attempting to fix the problem, I went to the mouse settings to make sure it was enabled, however the Trackpoint section was grayed out and the enabled box was unchecked. I also checked the BIOS settings and both the Trackpoint and touch pad are set to automatic. I have also uninstalled and reinstalled the Ultranav driver and utility. Is there anything else I should do to fix the problem? The amount of water that got into the keyboard did not look like it was much and evaporated pretty quickly, so I am not sure if this is just a coincidence or it is related to the water being in the keyboard.  I also tried tried the Trackpoint with a Ubuntu Live CD, but it did not work in Ubuntu either. Thanks

I own a late 2015 Thinkpad t450s. It was fine for a long time but since few months cursor is drifting most of the time and Trackpoint stops working for a few seconds to minutes on it's own. What I have done till now: * Backed up and re-installed older version of Windows. * Tested on safe mode * Cleaned Trackpoint from dusts etc. I also used mouse and not the trackpoint but it still does that. I cannot stand to this behaviour of  the cursor anymore. Any solutions/ideas?

My couple week old T400 is having some TrackPoint issues. The cursor doesn't jump, I've checked all my settings, and the touchpad is off. What is does do is when I navigate upwards, sometimes the cursor will slowly move downwards on the screen without me touching it, for at least 2 full seconds. It moves slowly, not quickly, sort of like the Trackpoint not resetting to its neutral position. Does anyone else have issues where the cursor using the trackpoint doesn't completely stop moving? Even sometimes when trying to navigate to click a point on the screen, the cursor will push itself downward, so I end up having to exert even more pressure to get it to move in the opposite direction I want to go. Sorry if this isn't a good explanation of my issue, it's a bit hard to explain. Again, the touchpad is off and the click feature for the TrackPoint is also off. Thanks in advance for any suggestions (hopefully solutions!)!Message Edited by song510 on 06-16-2009 09:40 AM

I've got my P70 recently, and everything works well except I have 2 issues with the keyboard and trackpoint working together: 1) Holding down Fn keys with left click and drag of the trackpoint does not work: this is incredibly frustrating, for example pan, rotate, and zoom in autodesk inventor are bound to F2-F4 keys with left mouse click 2) There is about a 1-2 second lockout period for the trackpoint left click button after any keyboard button press. For example when trying to edit a bunch of lines in code, typing and moving to a new location does not work, because you have to keep left clicking untill the lockout expires.  Both of these issues make the machine essentially unusable in any professional software, either CAD or software development.  None of these issues show up if I plugin the old usb thinkpad travel keyboard that also has a trackpoint in it, so this must be either a hardware or a driver bug in the P70 itself.  Anybody else expririncing this issue or know a solution to this? Or perhaps I just got some bad hardware?

I had recently done an update using ThinkVantage. It changed the behavior of my trackpoint (pressing the middle now doesnt scroll up and down). It does however put a small round picture and it seems to allow me to scroll on any direction EXCEPT in places where the location has a clickable link. This means that the scroll function of the trackpoing cannot be used in windows start menu, etc. The issue though is that when I try hit Fn+F8, then "manage settings" - it says "unable to connect to synaptics pointing driver..." etc. then it asks me if I "...want to uninstall the driver?" Also, in folder view, hitting the center button now drags the file instead of allowing me to scroll - which is an unexpected (i believe incorrect) behavior Is this supposed to happen? My laptop is the T410s, touchscreen.

I want to report several issues with TrackPoint. Basic InfoLaptop: X1 carbon 3rd genModel: 20BT-CTO1WWOS: Windows 10 Pro (upgraded from Win 7 Pro)TouchPad driver: Synaptics ThinkPad UltraNav Driver ver. 19.0.17.2  Issue 1: TrackPoint does not work with MS Office 2016 (except Word).Mid button + TrackPoint cannot scroll horizontally in Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote. Scrolling vertically works well.Horizontal scroll works well with Word 2016, Notepad, Microsft Edge, Firefox, etc.Horizontal scroll works well in Excel 2016 with ThinkPad mouse (model: MORFGOO) with mouse suite. Issue 2: TrackPoint calibrates even in mid button + TrackPoint mode.If you tilt TrackPoint steadily for a few seconds, it calibrates and takes it as new zero position. This is a correct behavior. If you hold mid button and tilt TrackPoint steadily (i.e. scrolling), it should never calibrate. This is another correct behavior which was seen with my previous ThinkPad notepads. However, my X1c TrackPoint calibrates even when mid button is held. After 0.5~1 seconds, the scroll stops. When releasing, the mouse pointer moves automatically. This is annoying. Issue 3: Mouse pointer changes size when mid button is pressed. The same as this post.  I use TrackPoint a lot with Excel and the above issues lower efficiency.I hope there will be new Synaptics driver to resolve the issues. btw, I'm not sure which is the best way to report bugs, because there are tooooooo many Lenovo and ThinkP... Can i just say this driver makes my head explode but unistalling it is literally 100x worse?
Ok so here is the issue at start. I got a new lenovo laptop after my old one kicked the bucket and
the laptop alone is beautiful. Works great , great graphics , yeah. The biggest issue for me though is
the mouse. I play games and the previous issue was that the mouse has a serious tap2click issue
going on with it. It would literally click everything and this caused me to screw up alot in games so
i installed Synaptics mouse driver (Which according to Lenovo support,i'm supposed to have anyways)
to disable that annoying tap2click and it worked but ofc a new problem was born. Now i couldn't use
my mouse and keyboard at the same time. Again i game so this was a game-breaking issue for me.
After a few days i was able to resolve this issue but now i have ANOTHER issue. Now it's getting
very hard for me to right click. I have to tap it several times just to right click. This is getting really
stupid and i'm ready to just deal with the tap-happy mouse i had before because it seems this driver
is loaded with problems. Is there any way to fix this issue? To be clear , I can't right click properly.

Hello,  I just got this TP Yoga and have had some issues with it right away.  First, the trackpoint is not working.  Second, my bluetooth mouse is very laggy.  Basically, everytime I leave it for a few seconds I need to double click or move it for abotu 2-3 seconds before it starts working again.  These things combined make this very annoying to work on.  What I have done: restarted the computer, reinstalled windows, updated to the latest drivers on the lenovo website, then called tech support.  My option now is to send it back and lose my computer for 10 days.   Anyone else have any suggestions?   Thank you all!

Hi,I have had this issue with another Lenovo laptop, too, but my current laptop is a T60. Sometimes (unpredictably), I may move the Trackpoint into one direction to move the mouse cursor, and as soon as I let go, the mouse cursor moves in the opposite direction for about 2 seconds or so.This is highly annoying and disruptive. Any idea what could cause this? This has happened ever since I bought the laptop (new), so it should not be a matter of "worn out".Is there anything I can do about this? Thanks! Message Edited by semmelbroesel on 01-04-2009 09:36 AM

Hello everyone, I searched a bit both these forums and others but haven't found the solution to this problem I'm experiencing. I recently bought a used T430 and I've been using it for the last couple of days, trying to get used to trackpoint and all. I performed a clean windows install and installed a Win 10 education my university provides. I followed the advice on Lenovo webpage about letting Windows update do its thing first and then run the Lenovo System Update utility to update drivers as necessary. Everything's working nicely other than some issues with the trackpoint buttons (the 3 buttons just below the space bar are called the trackpoint buttons I guess?)  Anyway, the issue is that before I did a fresh install, the middle button when pushed entered the scroll mode which then let me scroll using the trackpoint. Now it still enters the scroll mode but also does a right-click when I let go. This leads to an issue where a right-click is performed at every scroll step(if that makes sense) which leads to wonky scrolling. One other issue is that the right button does nothing at all. I expected the middle button to only have scroll functionality and the right button to simply right-click.  Things I've tried so far: - Manually removed the pointer device and ran Lenovo system update again to update the UltraNav drive, and also disabled auto-driver installation of windows update. The driver version installed by System Update is 19.0.17.115.&nb... Read more

The two finger scrolling on my Synaptics touchpad sometimes gets "lost" after coming back from Sleep mode (it does not work).  Rebooting corrects the issue temporarily, but I would like to resolve it permanently.  I believe this is a driver problem.  I have already uninstalled the hardware from Device Manager (without removing the driver), and this has not corrected the issue.  That said, on the Y40 downloads page there is only a Windows 7 driver listed (the laptop came with 8.1 pre-installed).  This driver has a newer release date than the one I have installed. Can I use this driver despite the OS inconsistency?

Answer:Y40 Synaptics Driver

I'm not sure if the Win 7 drivers can be used for Windows 8.1.You can give it a try. Should not cause much problem even if it's not compatible. In the meantime, let me check with eSupport team for Windows 8.1 drivers.

Answer:14 month old Samsung X120

As I understand it - the fact that it is just out of warranty as you put it, it could still be eligible for repair depending on how much you paid for it- ie: if it was a few hundred pounds then it is reasonably expected to last longer than your 1 or 2 yr warranty (depending on what it was) You can have a read through here enter link description here in the meantime and maybe someone else will come on and post more information for you.

Hi,When you consider that you can get an asus eeepc for 220-250$, I wonder if the x120 high price tag is justifiable. I own a x220 and love it, but really it wasn't that expensive if you compare to similar options (fast cpu, lightweight, long battery life...). When it comes to a netbook, the cpu are pretty much the same, along with size and weight. Hello all,

Ive got some troubles with my new laptop which I cant seem to solve.

For some reason I cant type and click at the same time, like when I use the WASD keys and use the trackpad clicker simultaneously in games. (NOTE, this is the case when browsing or whatever as well)
The issue presides when I've got my external mouse plugged in and using that, but I was really looking foward to doing some casual gaming when im travelling and what not, and would rather not use an external mouse, but right now its more or less impossible. After trying tons of stuff out I figured out a quick solution to this problem, by constantly holding down the left CTRL button, but this is of course super uncomfortable and just making me even more frustrated that I cant just find a fix for it all together.

Spent a good couple of hours trying to figure it out with loads of google searches but none of the suggested solutions work (the most common tip being to disable the 'Palm Check Threshold' option in the Advanced tab in the Synpatics Control Panel, which does absolutely nothing) and trying to find the 'Click Delay' options which apparently is nowhere to be found in the current version of Windows 10 (sigh)

Has anyone els had these issues and know what the fix is for synaptics and windows 10?

And yes before you ask I've tried reinstallating several drivers, both current and past, but this particular thing does not change.

Hope someone could help me out

Three weeks or so ago I posted here, asking for help on how to disable my touch pad on a Lenovo laptop. I disabled all the gestures, unchecked the 'lock on' feature, etc. and for a short while thought the issue was resolved. It is not. Here is my original thread:
http://www.sevenforums.com/search.php?searchid=6664971
It was closed but I am still having problems. When I drag the pointer across objects, it activates them, opens pages, that sort of thing. If I accidentally leave the pointer on the 'previous page' button, it automatically does goes back. It is driving me crazy. I've disabled everything (except disabling the touch pad entirely) and it's still plaguing me.

Short of a virus (I've scanned a few times with AVG and MalwareBytes and found nothing), the only thing I can think is perhaps in disabling the various features, I accidentally hit upon a sequence or combination that keeps somehow didn't disable those features I don't want.

Any suggestions?

I have this laptop for 8 months (ASPIRE E1-572-6 I5-4200U 4GB RAM) but this problem happen ever since first weekthe synapticis touchpad stop to click at random (around 3 times a day when i'm not using with a mouse)It moves but is not able to click...in fact if I look at a system tray: (you can force to always show icons and notification)-it still green when i move-it is blue when use as a wheel-left button icon is green when i click with the key-left button icon is yellow when i fast touch to clickso THIS IS NO HADWARE ISSUEthe problem must be the driver(i've reinstalled) (newest on acer website is 17.0.6.13 and is dated as 2013) or windows explorer(because explorer behaver weird when this happens)the touchpad receives my input right, but dont send the comands to windows or windows process in a wrong way  MY QUICK FIXobviously i'm tired of it)1 - suspend the computer, but is far from being a solution(web aplications, online games and downloads does not work well with it)2 - plug a USB Mouse and use the mouse for a while, them remove the USB Mouse and its now able again to click( I not always i carry a usb-mouse and thats the reason for laptops to have the touchpad )PS- Quick fix 2 proves that i dont need to suspend computer,so even less chance to be hardware issue anyone had these problems? my laptop came with windows 8.1 and i still use and like windows 8.1 (dont want to install windows 7)

Answer:Touchpad issues (Aspire E1 572-6 with Synaptics)

I cannot believe how bad this touchpad is. I've had two customer support reps take over my computer and the problem still isn't fixed. The problem: The tap function is extremely erratic. Sometimes it takes one tap. Sometimes two. Sometimes 5 to execute the simple function of closing a tab on a browser, or electing a utility in a software app, or clicking on a link and opening it. etc. etc. Then, sometimes I tap and the cursor lurches....  This is my 3rd HP computer, but this is unacceptable. Fix it Hewlett Packard. Signed, A very unhappy customer

I'm using the ultranav middle button to scroll (I live for this feature which is why I've been buying thinkpads since time immemorial) However, on the t460, scolling with the middle button/nubbin is painfully slow in Word 2007, and Adobe Acrobat/Reader is a nightmare. In Word its just slow and you have to use a lot of pressure on the nubbin (there appears to be no setting to change this). In Acrobat, it's agonizingly slow (in both Reader and Pro) and will "stick" on if you try to go to fast and just scrolling for multiple seconds after you release the button.  Stragely, the trackpad scrolling works fine in Word, though it is still bad in Acrobat.  In addition, the middle button scrolling will frequently slip and stop scrolling, sending the pointer to the bottom of the page.  Nubbin/middle button scrolling works (oddly) extremely well in Microsoft Edge... Please help! Middle button scrollig with the nubbin is the best feature on these machines.  Using: T460 Windows 10 64-bit with the latest drivers.

I recently formatted my Xnote laptop. The synaptics driver was reset to its original state. The scroll is too jumpy for me, and I tried to update my driver, by going to Drivers | Synaptics. All the download links seem to be broken. How can I get the newest version of the synaptics touchpad driver?

Answer:Can't download synaptics driver!

Best place to look for drivers is the PC Vendor and not the actual device manufacturer. Sometimes the non PC vendor drivers will not work correctly as many PC vendors do custom impementations of the hardware.

Just Installed (clean install) Windows 7 64 bit on my laptop today, what a pain, tried an update first on my 32 bit but had problems so I decided to go ahead with installin 64 bit as my computer was compatible.

Anyway, got it installed and I'm re-installing my software.

Main problem is I can't seem to get a driver for my touchpad on my laptop which is a Fujitsu Siemens just over a year old. Fujitsu do not have 64 bit drivers but I got one from Synaptics.com which is supposed to be compatible and signed but when I try to run it I get the error message that it is not a Win32 app.

Anyone got an answer for me.

I successfully upgraded yesterday from 8.1 and this morning I was looking at the new "desktop switcher." I was looking for an OSX style touchpad gesture to switch between them. I followed the instructions on the second part of Get Mac-Like Scrolling and Gestures on a Windows Laptop to try and get a custom synaptics driver working. In the course of this, I uninstalled the factory synaptics drivers using "Programs and Features" in the control panel. When trying to install the new custom drivers, I got the error:

"A newer version of the Synaptics Pointing Device Driver is installed.

If you want to install the older version of the Driver, please uninstall the current Synaptics driver by selecting "Synaptics Pointing device" from the "Add/Remove Programs" Control Panel, then run Setup again."

At this point, my touchpad no longer works at all. So I tried to restore the driver to what it was originally.

My first thought was to get windows update to update it for me. I got "Lenovo synaptics touchpad driver" to appear in the list of updates. When trying to update, it threw the error:
"Synaptics driver update for Lenovo Pointing Device - Error 0x80070002"

After rebooting and attempting again with no success, I turned to Lenovo's website. I found the support page for my device:

I just upgraded to Windows 10 and upgraded my synaptics driver to their windows 10 version. Only trouble is the little red light in the corner is always on. The light is only supposed to come on if the trackpad has been disabled but the trackpad is working and the light is on. On top of that the double tap the corner function that turns the trackpad on and off doesn't seem to be an option with this version of the driver.

I managed to find a registry hack to get chiral scrolling to work again but can't seem to find/enable the corner double tap and rid myself of this stupid light.

ETA: Okay weirder still the light is reversed, when I plug in my USB mouse the light goes out and the trackpad is disabled.

Hi! So a few hours ago I went to play a game (Blacklight Retribution) and when I pressed any key down and tried to look around I couldn't look around. I've ran into this problem before and easily fixed it. So I went to Control Panel, searched "Mouse" then clicked on Mouse settings. What I saw was this.... Screenshot by Lightshot. Iclicked yes the first time and tried installing the Windows 8 Synaptics Driver Again... It worked. But I still got the same error when going to Mouse Settings. This time I clicked no and received this... Screenshot by Lightshot. So for quite some time after this I was confused on what to do. To relieve my mind I tried playing another game (Planetside 2) and didn't have the problem I had with Blacklight. (This problem is fixed now) But what was annoying me was whenever I brushed just a hair on the trackpad it made me click which made me shoot! Now I go back to the Mouse Setting and browse through it and don't see anything helpful. I decided to look at Device Manager and look to see what was under the Mouse area. I found this... Screenshot by Lightshot. That has nothing to do with the original or Synaptics driver I just installed! So If I can please get some help on how to get my Synaptics Driver back so I can change my mouse settings that would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

I'm having a problem where my mouse doesn't move while a key is pressed. In Settings>Mouse & Touchpad, under the "touchpad" heading, the "Delay before clicks work after typing (paraphrased)" settings is set to No Delay (always on). From the above screen>Additional mouse settings>smartsense>settings cog next in smartsense bar:The top setting is all the way left on the "off" selection of a ticked bar.The second bar labeled "tapping disabled time after keystroke" is all the way left. The third bar labeled "pointing disabled time after keystroke" is all the way left. The first top bar being set to "off" causes the bottom half of the setting screen to be grayed out. From the searching I did, apparently the settings are correct(?), but it's not disabling the feature.A solution that worked for a few people was to install a previous driver and set it to not automatically update it. After a good bit of searching around on this very confusing-to-me site, I was unsuccessful at finding the driver I need. My current driver installed is:Synaptics TouchPad Driver (Windows 10 v1607)19.3.11.37 Rev. X120e has no mSATA mini PCIe compatibility, so Intel 310 SSD will be of no use for creation of high speed SSD + HDD system. But Super Talent CoreStore MV has standard mini PCIe interface, so it can be detected and used by notebooks with no mSATA support. The only problem is booting of OS from it as X120e bios has only PCI LAN boot option. Is it possible to leave HDD as the boot source in bios but only with boot sector, which will redirect to SSD, where Windows will be actually installed? Another option is to push Lenovo to add PCI SSD to boot options in bios. Hello,

All I can think of is that you would have to try purchasing the Super Talent CoreStore MV mSATA mini PCIe SSD and experimenting.  I would strongly suggest buying from a reseller that has a good returns policy, in case it does not work.

I just got a new T61p running Vista business and was configuring the look & feel of it related to the trackpoint.  I completed all of the normal 'first time setup' chores; registration, software & driver updates, user definition and savepoint. I went to the Control Panel,  Hardware & Sound, Mouse, Mouse Properties/UltraNav panel.  Once there, I played around with the TrackPoint by: clicking the TrackPoint Settings buttonselecting the Magnifying Glass optionclicking the Choose Scrolling or Magnifying Glass Function Settings buttonselecting the Large Size Magnifying Glass optionclicking the Ok buttonclicking the Apply button on TrackPoint Propertiesclicking the Ok button on TrackPoint Propertiesselecting the Use advanced features only - the Magnifying Glass feature didn't seem to work when the 'pointing device' option was enabledclicking the Apply button on UltraNav I was then able to use the TrackPoint as a roving Magnifying Glass, which was a 'neat' feature that quickly became unusable.  (Normal typing lead to frequent brushes of the TrackPoint which caused the Magnifying Glass to pop up when & where I didn't want it, etc.) I tried to undo the feature by resetting it to a Scrolling only with 'Use as pointing device with advanced features' setting - clicking Apply/Ok as needed - but to no avail.  The TrackPoint didn't resume it's 'pointing device' functionality. I then reset it to M... I am on a restoration project on an ancient Toshiba 4020CDT - with Win XP Pro. Noticing that there was too much junk software installed on it, I decided to do housecleaning. In the process - there was a Logitech mouse driver (I think 8.7 but do not remember exactly). Not planning to use Logitech mouse (and planning to just get by with the track point the laptop comes with), I uninstalled it.

In the uninstallation process, the system prompted me to reboot. And, since that time - neither the track point nor the external mouse that I tried works. In fact, I can not even login as I can not get the cursor to the user ID.

Is this laptop toast? Or, is it something I can resolve? Not the end of the world as this laptop belongs in the museum (or electronic junk yard) but I do feel bad and would like to some advice.

Thank you very much!

Hi guys,

Yesterday I realized that none of my USB ports were working. The last known date they were working was the 9th of December.

My laptop is an MSI GE62 2QL , running on Windows 8.1 64-bit.

Here are some screenshots from Device Manager. I've tried updating the driver software, automatically and manually. I have also tried finding the drivers from Intel's website but I couldn't find anything that worked, or wasn't looking in the right place.
Updating Automatically:

Similar result for the other two.

Updating Manually searching through C:\

I'm currently trying the drivers that MSI provides, but im not sure which one I need. Will update if situation improves.

MSI Global 64

Any help at all would be appreciated. Thanks

For a while now, I have wondered why the virtual buttons shown in the utility http://imgur.com/Lljj1Z7 don?t function as advertised. According to the utility, I should get a left click if I depress the left are of the touchpad, a middle click if I push on the bumps, and a right click if I depress the right half of the touchpad. In my experience, I get a left click regardless of where I depress the touchpad. The only exception is when I depress the bumps in the top middle of the touchpad?when I do that, the mouse enters some weird scrolly mode where I scan scroll stuff with the trackpoint. It definitely does not emit a middle click. But, more importantly, I cannot figure out how to get trackpoint mode to emit a right click. How do I get trackpoint classic mode to work? Is there a way to downgrade the drive or use a non-lenovo branded driver to get it to behave properly? Right now, I?m relying on an external mouse just to middle click and right click. I?m using Windows 10 b10240 and, as in the post?s title, my trackpoint driver is the latest listed on Lenovo?s support site (which I think WU actually installed for me)?19.0.12.61. Why don?t the virtual buttons work and are there any other workarounds that don?t involve using a mode other than Trackpoint Classic?

Answer:T540p unable to right-click with virtual buttons in trackpoint or trackpoint classic mode 19.0.12.61

Seems to have partially fixed iteslf since Windows Update (WU) installed 19.0.16. Now the right half of my touchpad performs a right click when in TrackPad Classic mode. However, the supposed ?middle click? zone still does a weird scrolly mode instead of sending a middle click. Guess I still have to use an external mouse to accomplish a middle click when using Classic TrackPoint mode, but at least the situtaion is better than when I couldn?t right click with this mode.

The ultrapad pointing devices on my TP X230T  has suddently stopped working.  I have tried deleting the driver and reinstalling.  I have tried downloading the latest driver from the Lenovo site.  None of this helps.  See the screenshot below for the specific error message, "Synaptics (SmbDrv system)" failed to install. I am running Windows 10, 64-bit.  I upgraded several months ago. Note error message

Answer:Synaptics Ultrapad Driver Error

Hi DAVANDEN, Some report that installing the driver twice works, so you might try just running the driver install again and see if that fixes the prolbem You might also try uninstalling the device via Device Manager Control Panel (right click on Start > Device Manager), selecting "Delete the Driver Software for this Device" if offered, and then rebooting before trying to reinstall the driver. Good Luck,   Good Luck.

I attempted to disable the pointing device (touch pad) on the keyboard since I'm using an external mouse and I often make the mouse move with my wrists leaning on the touch pad. The first thing I disabled was the touch screen driver. I re-enabled that OK. But when I un-installed the driver for what was called the Synaptics touch pad, the touch pad remained operational. So I don't know what I un-installed, and I cannot get the system to recognize any new hardware with a hardware scan. Was the Synaptics touch pad driver something extraneous that isn't used? Thanks for your help. Lee

The touchpad on my HP G62 laptop was less responsive than normal. I tried changing the properties with no improvement. So I went to HP help and noticed that there was a driver update for this device. So I ran the update. Then the touchpad barely worked at all and a notice box said the driver was incompatible with current system. The advice on the web included more than one remark advising to not bother with the Synaptics website as it is unreliable. I did it anyway. Synaptics recognised I had a legal copy of Windows 7 Home and I downloaded the suggested driver. Which actually was a new version entirely. Now the pad is back to life just like old times. The HP update was outdated. Every time I have used any HP updates I run into problems. I suggest HP users forget all about the "Support Assistant" and seek more credible update sources. Thnx, gnuguy.

Answer:Synaptics ThinkPad UltraNav Driver

Yep, there is definitely a bug with the 18.0.7.103 version of the driver on a T440s. I had to rollback to 18.0.7.57 in order to fix it.The issue (hang up) happens when my laptop wakes up from sleep. I have to restart in order to bring back the trackpad. It's a shame that more than 3 months later this driver is still being offered to T440s users via System Update app and has not being fixed.
