X220 freezing issue

Question: X220 freezing issue

Hello, I have been having an issue with my X220 freezing. This tends to happen relatively randomly, however I have noticed it more frequently under these specific circumstances:Plugging in the computerUnplugging the computerWhen there is a shift in the speed of the fanThis is not to say that the computer always freezes under these conditions, but this is when I tend to notice it most. To describe the issue further, when I mean that the computer freezes, the screen locks up and I cannot move the mouse with either thre trackpoint or pad. I cannot use the keyboard either, with neither esc, cntrl-alt-del or any other combination of buttons functioning to make the computer come back to normal. The only way I can "resolve" the issue is by doing a forced restart my holding down the power button. After it restarts, it is fine, at least until another freeze. Another issue that I've had that may be related is that for a while when I closed the lid of the computer to put it to sleep, the computer would shut down. I've checked all of my settings regarding power management and what the computer should do when the lid is closed, and it was always set to put the computer to sleep when the lid was closed, so that is not the issue. As a temporary solution I've now changed that setting to have the computer go into hibernation when the lid is closed, which does not cause shut downs, but it is obviously less desireable than just having the computer go to sleep. I called Lenovo technical support, but the person on the phone was not really helpful. He just said that it was a software issue most likely regarding windows 7, and that I would have to do some sort of system restart to correct the problem. The thing is that I'm not convinced that this is really getting at the root of the problem, as when I look at the windows activity log there are a variety of errors and warnings that seem to conincide with my freezes. The lenovo staff person could not or would not help me decode these issues, so essentially that conversation bore little fruit. Anyhow, it is obviously frustrating to have a 2 month old computer have these type of issues (the problems have been occurring almost since the computer was intitally purchased). In some ways I question whether it may be related to the most contentious X220 issue of throttling. Anyhow, I would love some help and feedback from anyone who is experienced with issues like this.Thank you

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: X220 freezing issue

hey mctagga9,just curious to know, have you done a full system update of your x220 ?if you have not, kindly do so. If you have updated your unit, could you access msconfig and use diagnostic startup.this mode will make windows load only windows driver. by doing so, you can check if the problem stems from a non-windows driver or something else.

I have many problems with my X220 laptop. 1. the tool box is detecting an error (WDHD08-KPL) when it test the hard drive. Does anybody know what this mean or do?2. there's a spot on the IPS screen where the pixels are showing brighter than anywhere else on the screen. This spot is only showing when there's color. It appeared out of nowhere approximately 2 weeks ago and it never disappeared. It's really disturbing.   Is it a problem of burn pixels or is it something else?3. the computer is always freezing for no apparent reason. It last for about 3-5 minutes each time. I had to remove firefox, avg and the thinkvantage access connection to avoid the computer to freeze... It happened even with the new BIOS (1.19) and the new power manager version (3.62)  which I installed to remove the permanent throtling problem.  Seriously, why is there so much problem with this laptop??

Answer:Many problems with the X220 : Error WDHD08-KPL on Hard drive and computer freezing

hey ODub,before all of this started, was any software installed or removed ?and before the bios was updated, was the unit freezing less or more ?

Not at all sure this is a Lenovo X220 issue (win 7- 64bit), but I'm having the following problem with my 1tb WD My Passport Essential SE USB 3.0 external drive: It works fine when plugged into the USB 3.0 port.  However, if I safely eject it, and use it in a USB 2.0 port, it will not be recognized if I go back to the USB 3.0 port.  I can usely get it working again in USB 3.0 mode if I reboot. (I have two of these external drives, and the behavior is identical for both of them). I've tried lots of different things, but still can't solve this issue.  Are there any newer USB 3.0 drivers for Windows 7, or for the X220, that I should be installing?  The only one I see for USB 3.0 on the Lenovo site is for the Nec controller. Again - not saying this is a Lenovo issue, but I don't have another computer with USB 3.0, so I was hoping people might be able to tell me about their experience with USB 3.0 and the X220.  Thank you.

Answer:X220 - USB 3.0 issue

I updated the USB 3 drivers from Lenovo - even tried a later version from Renesas, but no resolution of the issue. Would be interested if anyone else out there is running USB 3 external drives in their X220 - if so, have you ever used the same drive in a USB 2 port? Thanks.

I recently transferred a large amount of files from a USB3.0 capable portable HDD and a superspeed USB3.0 cable. When plugged into the USB3.0 slot on my notebook, the transfer rate was shown as only 48MB/s instead of the theoretical 5GB/s. I tried plugging into the 2.0 slot on my notebook, and the transfer rate was shown as 36MB/s. Any idea what could be the problem here?

Answer:X220 USB 3.0 speed issue

The theoretical speed is if both ends are able to sustain that speed. At best, a spinning hard drive will provide up to 60MB/s-120MB/s under sequential reads, and up to 0.5MB/s-1.1MB/s under random reads. Hence, the USB 3.0 bandwidth will not be fully saturated.

Use HD Tune's trial and run a benchmark on the drive while attached to the USB 3.0 port.

Current I've several x220 laptops in my company, when I wish to reinstall windows from USB flash drive, I found that all laptops are failed to detect the drive in BIOS. I check the USB boot option was enabled and the drive and boot from other desktop or laptops I've also tried to update the BIOS to latest version but still in vain. But it can boot from some other USB flash drives (not all..?) Is there any I can solve it?

Answer:X220 boot from USB issue

Current I've several x220 laptops in my company and a new Sandisk Extreme USB 3.0 64G (SDCZ80-064G)usb flash drive. When I wish to reinstall windows (or boot) from this USB flash drive, I found that all laptops are failed to detect the drive in BIOS. I check the USB boot option was enabled and it didn't include inside the list pressing F12. I've tested the flash drive can boot from other desktop or laptops but only failed in this combination. I've also tried to update the BIOS to latest version but still in vain.  Is there any method that I can solve it? Besides, why I can't download the drivers according to the laptop P/N? My laptops' P/N are 4268-PE9. Thanks a lot

Answer:Another Bluetooth x220 issue?

Hi,

Could you please check whether Bluetooth is enabled in BIOS?

Tap F1 while starting the system to get into BIOS. Under security tab, select I/O port access. Enable Bluetooth and check if Bluetooth is showing up in device manager. Also, check if you are able to find Bluetooth radios in device manager.

Post back if issue persists!

Best regards,
Mithun.

Hello, I have a 802.11n issue that drives me crazy..My X220 with 6205n Wifi adapter cannot connect to the router in N mode. The router is a huawei HG655b, using WPA2-PSK/AES. All my other computers at home can connect in N mode, but the X200.It only connects in b and g modes, as soon as I swith the X220 adapter's N mode on from device manager, it disconnects. I have updated the Wifi driver to the last version from Lenovo site, I have changed Power options on both battery and Ac to maximum performance for Wifi...what else could it be? An incompatibility with the router?

My laptop screen has developed a vertical grey band about 10cm wide which starts very light but as I leave the laptop switched on gets increasingly dark and when dark I can see effectively a shadow of a previous image on the screen, making it very difficult to read. I'm concerned that it may not simply be a screen replacement issue as there seems some comment that it may be a connector cable issue.  Any ideas?

My manager uses the offline files feature quite a lot and now she has moved to an X220 with Win 7 Pro 64-bit, however some days when she logs in she notices the sync icon isn't in the tray. When you go into offline files it says its enable but not active a restart will activate it. However rebooting leads to the same thing, instead I go into the services page and find that although set to auto the offline file service is not running, I click start and it kicks back into life. Now I have viewed the event viewer from when the computer starts and the Offline file service first starts then gchanges state to auto (delayed) then changes back to auto before finally saying that the service has stopped. All of these are info events as opposed to error or warning events. I know some services don't run even when set to auto as they are not needed however without offfline files service running no syncing is done and you also lose the "Always available offline" option when you right click a folder/file. If anyone has any ideas as to whyt the service is stopping that would be great. Mark

Answer:X220 and Offline Files issue.

It is caused by a bug in "RapidBoot" which is software that Lenovo preloads.  You can either (a) uninstall RapidBoot or (b) upgrade to the latest version which fixes this bug.  I recommend (a) - you won't miss RapidBoot by uninstalling it.  Sorry for your inconvenience.

Hi everyone,  I have a problem with the wi fi connection in my laptop, the computer doesent read the wirelees divise. when I click Fn F5 all I can see is the bluetooth adapter, no wifi adapter to turn on or off, this have been happening reacently, yesterday I downloaded the drivers and nothing, then I restarted the computer several times and it began to work again but after I put the laptop in stand by the problem came back again, now im using a datacard to connect to the internet. Thank you for your help.

Answer:Thinkpas X220 Wi Fi connectivity issue

Hi,it seems I have the similar issue with my x220 and wifi card Intel Centrino 1000 - sometimes after laptop resumes from sleep wifi card disapears not only from control window after Fn+F5 pressing, but from Device Manager.I think it's a power management driver related issue but can't explain why. Or some tool from Hotkey Features Integration package doesn't work properly. I've noticed several times at this moment monitor driver (in Device Manager too) didn't work also. But the biggest and the most trouble is laptop can't be rebooted or turned off correctly - every time when wifi adapter disapears after 5-7 minutes of tasks closing I get a BSOD with Power Management error message. Of course, wifi adapter works correctly after laptop turning on.And another one trouble - after I've deleted Access Connections wireless devices control window (after Fn+F5) can't be opened with error message. What I did?1. delete and reinstall Hotkey and PM driver manually. No effect.2. delete Hotkey and PM driver, reinstall them using System Update. No effect. These issues are very unpleasant but I don't want to revert laptop to the factory stage.x220, win7pro 64 bit, bios 1.19, drivers and OS updates are up to date.

Hi, For few weeks now, I have been experiencing a very frustrating battery issue with my X220. Usually I put my laptop in hibernation while there is still a good battery capacity (70-80%) at night (or before going to work). On the next day, when restarting the laptop, both Power manager and the windows gauge are indicating close to the same percentage as just before it was stopped the night before. Then after a random time, ranging from few minutes to a hour or so, windows will notify me that the battery is at a critical level of charge (6%) while just before both Power manager and windows indicator were showing something like 60% remaining. At that point windows shows 6% while power manager still shows the previous level of charge (let say 60%). After few minutes, Power manager indicator goes all to 6% and then the PC hibernates.  I think that my issue appeared after I updated Power manager, I reinstalled it including its driver with no luck...I am now performing a battery reset to see if it helps. I read several other posts regarding similar issues on the lenovo forums, it was suggested that some battery cells might been faulty and that a battery swap might solve the problem. However, as far as I read, it seems that people who performed a battery swap were still experiencing the issue. I wanted to know if there were any know fix for this battery issue or at least what steps I should be taking to investigate/debug this issue? ... Answer:Battery issue (6-cells) with my X220

To get the obvious out of the way, when your battery life suddenly drops off, are you watching YouTube or surfing Flash-heavy web sites? Yeah, a sudden drop-off in indicated battery life sounds like a driver issue, so I dunno...maybe you could try rolling back the battery driver or Power Manager. (There's a way to roll back the driver via Windows Device Manager, right? Just make sure you don't uninstall the driver through Windows; there should be a button to click for "roll back driver.") I suggest making regular full-system-image backups of your X220 while you're working on the drivers. With my old x100e, I got myself into trouble after uninstalling AMD Catalyst Controller, and it just refused to reinstall. Do you think like...a battery calibration would work? Go into Power Manager, Advanced, then Global Settings. Go to the battery low/critical section and click the box that says "do nothing" for when low and critical are reached. Power Manager will force the computer to run, even though the battery will broadcast a 0% level remaining. (And just to be safe, run the calibration with everything closed, use Power Manager to set the CPU to "low," and set a video looping in WMP or something like that, at brightness 11 of 15.)  It's not too healthy for the battery (to deep discharge), but if you get 3-6 hours in that test, it'll be safe to say the problem's in the software, either something hogging CPU power or a driver issue. I've done it a bunch of times, but... Hello,I've been using my X220 for almost 2 years now and now all of a sudden, whenever I use my x220, my wireless internet would stop working (at random moments) what happens is:first the network i am connected to becomes limited and any program that uses the internet gives me an error  message saying there is no internetthen all available connections disappear from that window that tells me the networks i can connect tothen when i try to turn my wireless radio off and on (via FN  + F5 )  i get a popup saying no network adapters are supported by the lenovo softwareafterwards i try to reset my wireless radio via physical switch (on the right side of my x220) but nothing happens. the only way to "fix" this issue is to reboot. is there anything i can do to fully fix this issue?

Hii, I bought a thinkpad x220 last october with the IPS display. Since last month, I noticed a bright pixel(may be two) on a white background.Furthermore, the borders were  bright on a black background. ... I saw other posts with similar problems so I thought of sending it to the depo After I sent it to the depo for a possible repair/replacement...   someone from lenovo calls me that they cannot replace the screeen and that I have two choices either to pay 750$( !!!!) for the screen or take the old screen as it is ... Now it makes me really doubt the whole 1 year warranty system ..  I tried calling the number but these people confuse me even further ..redirecting me from one person to another or just keeping me on hold for really long .. .Today the status information centre told me  they are saying that the motherboard is being replaced but nothing is mentioned about the IPS I was wondering if someone has had similar issues with the IPS and what did they do to resolve it .. .

Hi I recently flashed my BIOS (going from 1.26 -> 1.31) prior to installing Windows 7 x64 on a new SSD on my X220. The BIOS update seemed to work OK (I used the lenovo Windows utility to do it), but now I can't save any changes to any BIOS settings. I also cannot reset to defaults - I can't even select some options in the BIOS (e.g. anything to do with UEFI) - the cursor just skips over the lines on screen - and those I can select don't respond to any changes I try to make. I don't get any errors either in BIOS or in Windows, and my X220 boots OK, but obviously there's something wrong there. After updating the BIOS, I installed the SSD (a Samsung 830) and installed Windows on it - all this worked OK although I was planning to switch to UEFI for the new install and couldn't do so because the BIOS is now uneditable. Everything in Windows seems to work OK. I've tried re-running the BIOS utility but it reports that the BIOS is up to date and it won't re-apply the current update.  I've checked to see if anyone else has reported this issue here, and found a few reports with similar issues but different situations (e.g. people running Linux rather than Windows, or Wifi not working after the update) - but not this issue exactly. I'm wondering if this will fix itself when a new BIOS version is released and applied - if that's likely, I'm happy to wait until then (so long as nothing breaks in the meantime). I'd rather do that than pull the CMOS battery ... Read more

Hi, everybody! I have I strange problem. My ThinkVantage Fingerprint Software was working fine a few days ago until I had to uninstall the software. I had to uninstall it because my x200 had a motherboard problem and went to service. Meanwhile I used the HDD with another notebook. That's why I had to remove the fingerprint software. I got my x220 back and I tried to install the fingerprint (along with all other software and drivers) software, but I'm getting this message and the installation stops: You have currently installed another version of fingerprint software. Please, uninstall your existing software before running this installation. Actually, there's no sign left from the fingerprint software. I removed it via the Programs and Features menu, I entered BIOS, removed all the fingerprint data from the new motherboard (although I believe that was not quite necessary since it's a brand-new motherboard). All other drivers and software installed fine, without any problem. Has someone else encountered a similar problem? I'd appreciate it very much if you help me somehow. Thanks!

I tried to download the adapter driver for my ethernet cable to work: http://support.lenovo.com/en_SE/downloads/detail.page?DocID=DS019204 but for some reason, it does not install, or if it says it does install, the connection/ adapter still doesn't work (has the exclamation point in device manager).  I tried uninstalling the network connection adapter, then downloading and installing the driver, and then rebooting and it still does not work.  What can I do?  I have the X220 and have experienced many such problems, but this seems to be the most frustrating. Thanks very much.

I've played youtube video w/ chromium on xubuntu 16.04, pressed pause while being in fullscreen mod and closed the lid as usually. When I opened it, everything ran very slowly, all animations were stuttering, exhaust air was pretty hot, fan spinned at full speed, but there was less than 8% CPU load and 1 GB of RAM used. What I tried already: rebooting, taking out and putting back the battery, loading previous kernel version from grub menu. Then I swapped ssd with another laptop in house, which had windows 7 and xubuntu dualboot. Both systems ran slowly on x220, and xubuntu from x220 ran good on other laptop, so my conclusion was: there's a hardware problem with x220. Then I turned off Intel SpeedStep and CPU power management features in bios and turned on again, nothing changed. I put back ssd with xubuntu in x220 and ran dmesg console utility, this is what output looks like: https://pastebin.com/YREFCZQZ but I can't make any decision from this data. What should I do next to deal with this problem?

Hi,i just think that fan pulsing issue maybe needs new thread here because some major problems  pointed here http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/X-Series-ThinkPad-Laptops/X220-fan-constantly-on-revving-up-and-down/td-... are with new bios (1.16) solved. So, as many user may experience - thinkpad x220i (i3), but also other x220 series have this fan pulsing problem. If you put your ear at the fan area you could notice every 3-4 sec some sort of pulsing/beating. This pulsing is gone between 1954-1972 RPMs by my x220, but at all other RPMs i can hear it, or even feall it with my hand on keyboard.I uploaded the sound of this pulsing fan here:http://thinkpad-forum.de/threads/110463-X220-Serie?p=1092014&viewfull=1#post1092014 You can hear it with headphones an 100% Volume. My X220 doesn't seem to detect headphones properly.  Sound comes out of them instead of the internal speakers, but the audio mixer still shows the device connected as "speakers."  My old laptop could detect when headphones are plugged in and kept separate volume levels for headphones vs internal speakers, should the X220 be able to do this? I'm running Windows 7 on an i5-2520M with 8GB RAM.

Answer:X220 Headphone Detection issue

Actually this made me curious, so I checked out my X220, and indeed it worked like you described. However, I found a way to change that to provide the effect you're looking for. In Control Panel, click the Smart Audio icon. This will bring up the Smart Audio panel. Click Audio Director, one of the bottom icons. This brings up two choices, Classic & Multi-Stream. Changing to Multi-Stream recognizes the headphones when plugged in, and indeed maintains a different volume level. Hope that works for you!

I have not been able to 'plug in' my AC adaptor properly for almost 6 months. It always slides out a little after plugging in. At first, it was just a tiny problem and I managed to wiggle it manually. But now I cannot even charge unless I wiggle it for a good 10-15 minutes to find a good 'spot' then physically hold the cord in place. I thought it was the AC, but having tried a new AC adaptor that changed nothing, I started to think it's the DC. Called Lenovo today,  but was told that DC is not covered by warranty (although my machine is still under warranty). I don't know why it's not under warranty, as quite a number of threads have reported this issue here. Anyway, Lenovo asked me to just find a local service provider if I want to have a check up and change the DC (not keen on sending in the machine), but would changing the DC affect my warranty? I've been having this awful issue with my X220 recently.  Whenever the microphone is active, whether in a skype call, recording audio with some random flash app, or just viewing the microphone settings it causes the audio output, whether from the spakers or headphones, to cut in and out in a really odd fashion.  It won't completely cut the audio off, but rather go in and out of playing the audio normally to this weird status of playing audio like it's somewhat muffled.  If I go into the audio devices and disable the microphone the problem goes away completely, but it only really occurs when something is using the microphone. All of the settings in skype and windows relating to letting applications control audio and reducing volume for calls have been disabled as well. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the audio drivers, and am up to date on bios and everything else.Windows 7 x64

I recently purchased a Lenovo X220 and I am attempting to setup a dual monitor with it and a Samsung Syncmaster BX2331 monitor. When I change the setting to extended desktop on the secondary monitor the laptop monitor starts having issues. The useable space becomes bigger than the actual screen so I can scroll up and down while on the desktop. It will also scroll left and right and the desktop icons will move over onto the secondary monitor. The laptop has a resolution of 1366x768 and the monitor is 1920x1080. I am trying to explain the issue the best I can but it's a little hard to explain.

Answer:Dual monitor issue Lenovo x220

I know what you mean, it happened in XP when you set the screen resolution larger than what the screen was capable of. What cable are you using the connection to your secondary monitor? On the secondary monitor, press the auto calibrate button, or it's equivalent, and then unplug the VGA/HDMI cable and plug it back in see if that fixes your problem. it's also worth trying going into the settings and checking the button that says "hides modes not supported by this monitor" If you don't know where that is, right click on the desktop and click "screen resolution" then click advanced and at the bottom of that pop up you should see that check box. Those are the first things to check.

Ok, I'm posting this as a separate thread, since it was so strange.Upon learning about how to get full power to the headphone jack, by clicking on the headphones in the SmartAudio control panel, I enabled it. I plugged in my 90watt ultraslim and the x220 started making a terrible microphonic whine, like it was screaming, almost. The sound was coming out of the back of the laptop. Also, the battery refused to charge. As soon as I disabled the headphone boost, the laptop accepted the 90watt ultraslim and started charging as normal.I'm holding on to the 90watt slim for now, since I only use it for charging, but now after this last find, I think I have to get more compatible adapter... Yes, JameZ, I will make a video displaying both isues for engineering.

Hello ThinkPad-Community, I have a sporadic issue with the brightness control, thats mean sometimes I start my laptop from standby and the control with "Fn+Pos1 or FN+END" doesn't work. There is no reaction and no on screen display progress bar. Also in the default Windows 7 energy settings is no control of the display brightness possible. If the issue exist, only a complete reboot of the ThinkPad solve the issue. I've also found some discussions about this in the internet but no solution helps realy. NOTE: My Laptop has a complete clean install of Windows 7 and all drivers was installed by Lenovo System Updater.Does anybody have the same issue? Thanks for your help

Answer:Brightness control issue on ThinkPad X220

This is an on & off issue that creeps up on various Thinkpads. It was very notorious on my X120e, but it doesn't happen on my X220 at all, and I sleep/resume it all the time...It's a bug they can't seem to correct.

I wanted more capacity so foolishly replaced my trouble free 256gb Samsung 830 SSD with the 480GB Corsair Neutron GTX SSD on my Thinkpad X220 (should have stuck with Samsung) and whilst the Neutron GTX is hyper-fast, its giving me a problem. When i try to shut down Windows 7 (Pro 64 bit OEM), the notebook freezes at the "windows shutting down" screen (happens around 1 in 5 times) and i'm forced to remove the battery or hold down the power button to switch off the notebook. When i switch on the notebook again i get the message:"2100: Detection Error on HDD0 (Main HDD)"Pressing escape a few times does finally take me into Windows and everything works ok until i get the same issue again a few shutdowns later. I've formatted the SSD and re-installed Windows 7 again (in AHCI mode) but the problem still exists. This issue did NOT exist with the Samsung 830 SSD. The BIOS is up to date, ALL hardware drivers/firmware are up to date. I'm thinking perhaps the Corsair SSD is faulty so will test it in my desktop to see if i can replicate the issue. But before i do that, can anyone suggest other possible solutions?

Hi,I tried to find an answer to what happened to my X220 last week end. Suddenly it stopped being able to wake from sleep. Power button "breathing" green ring present, but it was not waking up by opening the lid or by Fn key press. When powered off by long press of power button, it booted successfully. This behavior was reproducible always. I thought maybe BIOS reset could help and I did it. After this it did not POST and it beeped 1 3 3 1 pattern - which is, according to documentation, system board or RAM. Having known the RAM was fine, I did pull them out and tried both modules one by one with no luck. So I took them out and went for original, small module, the machine was bought with. And it POSTed successfully with it. But after removing this module and returning the old, big modules, it POSTed too. And waking problem disappeared. Should I be worried about system board? My machine was made between Sep and Dec 2011, could it be early manifestation of dead EEPROM? Is there any way to test it?

Hello,

I've purchased the Lenovo X220 laptop with the Premium HD IPS display and I do have a problem with it (see below).
Laptop was purchased something like month ago and I've spotted this after I've started to work with it more heavily but after 14 days, so I was not able to return it to the seller (http://www.lenovoonline.cz).

When you put backlight to maximum you see that the display is not evenly lighted and forming bright spots on the bottom of it. It's most noticable on the black background.

I've sent notebook for repair (http://www.pcnet.cz) with this description (translated to english):"With maximum brightness set and the black display/background (eg. BOOT screen) on the bottom edge of the display there are visible white spots/maps. Small but visible and not even with different sizes. It's most visible on black background and while limiting external light (darker room, working in the night). Spots highlights even more when you try to pull the display towards you into steeper angle."

The laptop has been in the repair for 2 weeks and the result was this description:
"This kind of display is very sensitive to any pressure, and it will result in the brightening the place. It is specific for this model line and it's not the reason to warranty repair. We recommend to lower the brightness level in the darker room. Check of the display frame has been done and no problem has been found."
Later they said they've re... Read more

Answer:X220 IPS display backlight issue (with photos)

Yes, at maximum brightness level the backlight bleeding is very visible but I use it at 5 or 6 level where it has excellent contrast ratio considering how crappy current notebook displays are in general. The uneven backlight is caused by fancy LED backlight which is still not able to deliver similar quality regarding uniformity as good old CCFL backlight (that's why professional LCD monitors still rely on W-CCFL backlight). But I agree that the top-left corner is way too much bad and might indicate that the panel is seated badly in the frame. On the other hand my old IPS panel in R51 also have backlight bleed at maximum brightness level. Major problem is that Lenovo is still not able to fix the stupid bug with brightness level always set to max in BIOS screen that the backlight bleeding is very visible and irritating everytime you boot your machine. IMHO, the X220 IPS panel is still much better than any ugly contrastless TN panel Lenovo puts into ThinkPads (except 15" FHD). I bet that you would hate the X220i TN panel more than this one  There are also two different revisions of the IPS panel, the second one fixes problems with image retention. As for comparison with Z60m, X220 display lid is much more fragile so the panel is not protected well against pressures and flexes. In any case panel flex should affect the backlight bleeding temporarily only. If it persists it is subject to repair (replace, reseat etc.). Unfortunately I don't have any good low-ligh... Read more

I am fairly technical and usually able to troubleshoot most problems, but I am stumped.   I have had intermitted loss of internet connectivity since shortly after (maybe right away) I bought my X220 a few months ago.  The machine will lose internet connectivity and regain it randomly.  Other machines working through the same router will have internet connectivity and the X220 has no problem directly connecting to the router.  It does not appear to be a DNS issue since I try pinging 8.8.8.8 as a test.  I am able to log into my router just fine though.  It is very strange that the router connects to the internet, I connect to the router but the computer doesn't connect to the internet.  I assume this has some software component to the problem, but don't know what. The issue are worse when I am using mobile broadband, but still occurs at my house.  System ConfigurationX220 4286CTOCore i5-2410 2.3ghzWindows 7 64bit Home PremiumBios: 8DEET50WW 1.2 7/7/20114GBIntel Centrino Andavnced-N Wimax 6250- Intel Centrino Andavnced-N AGN Driver v14.0.1.2 12/21/2010- Intel Centrino WiMax 6250 Diver v6.2.1007.26 1/18/2011Other Network Adapters Installed- Blueooth PAN- Bluetoooth RFCOMM Protocol TD- Hamachi Network Interface- Intel 82568LM Gigagbit- MSFT Virtual WiFi Miniport Adaptner- PDANet Broadband AdapterHave Access Connections installed

hey daveboston, welcome to the forums.it's hard to say what's going on here but if you could, could you uninstall the current network drivers (wireless and wired) from your system and then let win7 install its generic drivers. Also remove all other network adapters that you have listed.once generic drivers has been installed, test your unit with your router via wireless as well as wired connection. see if there is any difference then head over to http://support.lenovo.com , download and install the wired and wireless network driver for your unit and test again.

Hello, I recently purchased a x220 and I am very happy with it. I turned off  "sleep when closed" for some reason and then accidently left it in my bag for like 15-20mins. It was hot but didn't really smell like burnt plastic or anything. However I feel as if the screen is harder to get at the right brightness. It feels as if I have to get a very precise angle to view the screen at the proper brightness/clarity. However it is hard for me to say if there is any difference to before as this happened only a week after using it. It could be acting just fine and I am just paranoid so my question is has there been any issues that have come up like this before? Has overheating in a bag or something ever caused the LCD screen to function just slightly improperly? Thank you,

Answer:x220 got hot, and now screen display clarity issue?

Well, first of all, I hope you're talking about the basic, TN LCD display, not the upgraded "Premium HD" IPS LCD screen. Anyway, personally I feel like it's so easy to be paranoid about screen quality and possible minor screen damage or defects, but Lenovo has owned up to the "ghosting" issue, so things can really happen sometimes. In your case, I wouldn't worry. Provided you are indeed talking about the basic TN screen and not the IPS, it sounds like your screen's viewing angles are performing normally. For some extra confidence, the Notebookcheck review of the X220 says their test unit got so hot under the sun that the plastic began to warp and bow, and even then, they didn't mention any screen degredation. And for that matter, isn't the X220 Mil-spec tested for heat? http://www.notebookcheck.net/Review-Lenovo-ThinkPad-X220-IPS-Subnotebook.55639.0.html

I have updated to latest version 15.6.1 from 15.03.1000.163 (Windows 7 64 bit)http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/detail.page?DocID=DS015011 I have disabled virtual wifi hosted network by 'netsh wlan set hostednetwork disallow' command that always worked for previous driver versions. This version installed two adapters 'Microsoft Virtual WiFi Miniport Adapter' and 'Microsoft Virtual WiFi Miniport Adapter #2'  that appear in Device Manager and disabling the hosted network no longer works. The netsh disallow command reports ok but 'netsh wlan show hostednetwork' always reports Allowed state. I have tried to remove the driver at all, restart and install it again but the issue persists. The only fix is to revert back to previous one 15.03.1000.163 I think this is a security issue that has to be resolved because the hosted network can not be safely disabled.

I purchased this unit June 2012, following update recommendations through Lenovo Solution Center since that date.  BIOS 1.33.  Recently installed Crucial 256gb mSATA SSD.  TrackPoint and TrackPad worked fine until yesterday.  I also use a Lenovo Bluetooth mouse, purchased three months ago, and all three forms of GUI cursor navigation worked fine until yesterday.  I used a wired USB mouse to navigate while (1) uninstalling and reinstalling the Bluetooth mouse drivers. (2) I found a thread on this site that spoke of disabling and re-enabling the TrackPoint and the TrackPad in the BIOS.  When both are enabled, neither works.  When the TrackPad is disabled, the TrackPoint works.  When the TrackPoint is enabled and the TrackPad remains enabled, nothing works.  I have uninstalled the UltraNav drivers and installed the current Synaptics driver (from their site), 16.2.21.0 dated 10/26/2012.  I then alternatively disabled and enabled TrackPoint and TrackPad in BIOS as above, and the result is the same. I've deleted the driver subdirectory that contains the UltraNav driver.  I did that before installing the Synaptics driver.  When I use Lenovo Solutions to search for updates, it asks me to download Synaptics UltraNav driver 16.2.5.0, which I then download and installed.  fn-f8, however, says that both TrackPoint and TrackPad must be enabled in the BIOS for UltraNav to work.  When I do that and press fn-f8, I am ... Hi,

I want to report issue with Lenovo X220 and Lotus Notes 8.5.x.
Problem is that Lotus Notes has missing some of its buttons.
Example if you try to forward message send button is not visible untill you refresh screen by pressing F5
I think problem is with Intel display drivers.

If you uninstall driver and use "standarg vga" all is working ok.
I have tested all Intel drivers that you can download on Lenovos site but everyone have same issue.

Also tested this with multiple computers and all have this same issue.

Any ideas?

There's a 48-page discussion on the backlight bleeding of the x220 on the Lenovo forums (http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/X-Series-ThinkPad-Laptops/Faint-Ghosting-on-X220-IPS-screen/td-p/435201). There are also many smaller threads regarding problems with the x220 IPS screen and to a lesser extent the x230 screen. I recently purchased an x230 and experienced bleeding. Due to my onsite warranty IBM support came and replaced the screen- but the new one still had bleeding. Another engineer came out, brought a new back-panel (because the flex of the panel seemed to be causing it) and said "this isn't broken- I have seen lots of x220s and x230s with this problem- its a design default". Could I challenge Lenovo to provide me with an x230 IPS screen which does not bleed? I cannot believe Lenovo released/designed a laptop with such a glaring (no pun intended) fault. Has anyone here got an x230 (or x220) IPS screen where there is absolutely no backlight bleeding on a dark background?

Answer:All x220 and x230 IPS screens have backlight bleeding issue?

All X230 and X220 LG IPS will have some degree of bios bleed, it is just matter of severity.

My x220 tablet is haveing issues with the graphics card shutting off. I purchased my x220t about 3 months ago and I have begun to have a reacurring problem. I will be running CAD 2011, nothing 3D, and the screen will spontanneously go black. 5 seconds later, it will restart and an issue report will pop up in the bottom right and corner of the screen. This issue is a real problem since I bought this laptop for engineering and with an i5 processor, CAD sould be running fine. I did not expect the graphics card to be a limiting factor since I am only using 2D visualls right now. I regularly use Lenovo update to check for any new drivers/updates. After an update to bios 1.25, my computer attempted to reboot, but it never really shut down. After 15 minutes of just black screen, I pulled the battery to force it off. When I attempted to reboot, no POST, just black screen. The Thinklight and green lights will flash, but nothing happens. So, I called Lenovo, and went through some basic troubleshooting which did not help. This all happened on Sunday, January 29th.  On Monday, January 30th, I called Lenovo again, and they said it would take about 2 weeks to :- send me the box- I send my laptop in- They fix it- They ship it back to me. I couldn't afford to wait 2 weeks, so Lenovo suggested me to find a Business partner locally. Lenovo site led me to Microserve in Burnaby, BC, Canada. I dropped it off on Monday, and they called me back on Tuesday to let me know that the mainboard needs to be replaced and ETA for the part is February 2nd, Thursday. Work will take 1-2 business days. So I waited. No update on Thursday, Friday or Monday (February 6th).  I called Microserve and they then told me that the part is not available, and they have no idea when it will come. They said they will look into it. So, I called Lenovo directly and asked them to follow up with this business partner about the part order. Today, I received a call from Microserve, telling me that the part MAY arrive in 2 weeks, and they will fix it WHENEVER the... We discovered this problem in early August with our new X220 tablets.  We have a 1-to-1 tablet pc program.  About 75% of our freshmen class has experienced this issue.  The tablets are running on battery power with the extended battery slice.  The units will spontaneously just power off.  Not a clean shutdown but just a power off.  The batteries are in various states when this happens, most of the time both batteries are almost fully charged.  I've witnessed this dozens of times with the students in my classes.  We found out that this also is affecting another high school in our consortium.  We bulk purchase our tablets with several other high schools.  The other high school that is experiencing this issue has the same model and the same manufacturer date 6-11-2012.  We estimate 200-300 units are affected between the two schools.  Lenovo product engineers are working on finding the source of the problem, but we currently have many frustrated students and parents.  Just curious if anyone else has seen this issue with X220 tablets and slices that were manufactured around the first part of June?

Hello everyone, I'm got a Lenovo X220 Tablet 4296-2YU, and I'm having some performance issues with it.It freezes for a few milliseconds (you can notice this while playing something on Youtube and you'll notice the audio is freezing for 0.001 ms, or watching the mouse cursor very closely and you'll see it is getting stuck)It also have poor boot time. Anyway, I look for the cause and found the following interesting event viewer notification attached here.It is not synced with the freezing issue on the timeline, but i think it is related. It says someting like : "the speed of processor 2 in group 0 is being limited by system firmware. the processor has been in this reduced performance state for..." Does anyone have this Warning message while using the computer ?You can look for it under: Computer manage -Event Viewer - Windows - System   As some of you may think, i already did a full check for :Windows updates - Fully updatedLenovos updates - Fully updatedHard Drive test - PassedCPU test - PassedGPU test - PassedMemory test - Passed

Answer:X220 Tablet 4296-2YU Performance issue with strange Event viewer warning

Lenovo 42962WU upgraded to 8gb of RAM here, Hi, I have experienced the same general slowness; very annoying. Thank you for checking the Event Viewer, didn't think of it.I have the exact same event listed; I googled it ("kernel processor power event 37", first result), turns out it's got to do with which power plan you're on; one that favourites too low of a performance bottlenecks the CPU, resulting in horribly low performance. The problem seems to completely go away when on a high performance power plan. I am fairly sure of which specific power settings to change, wouldn't mind confirmation though.Go to Power Manager in Advanced mode, to your favourite power saving plan and toggle System settings > System performance & CPU Deeper Sleep.

Ok, I've checked a bunch of sites and seen people with similar issues, but none have exactly the same problems I'm having. I have Windows XP and frequently used ZoneAlarm, Spybot, Adaware and Spywareblaster. HJT did not solve this problem for me.

My computer:
freezes at the log in 80% of the time unless I login in safe mode
if I'm able to log in, safe mode or not, I get a RPC error that says the PC will shut down in 60 seconds 100% of the time
I cannot run/install antivirus because I get a "not a valid win32 application" message
cannot connect to wireless connection and shows error message when the wireless adapter loads (there's a spot for it next to the clock, but the icon's invisible)
sometimes reboots randomly without the win32 app message
sometimes goes to a black screen and then comes back, then showing a "system has recovered from a serious error, please tell Microsoft" message
shows a blue screen at startup saying win32/autocheck didn't work, then finishes startup through the login screen
cannot system restore because no restore points are visible before infection
So far, I've been able to keep the PC running in safe mode occasionally thanks to Run>shutdown -a. The disc drives weren't reading for awhile but I've gotten those to load again. I tried to uninstall my wireless adapter to reinstall, but I get an error message "InstallShield Engine (iKernel.exe) could not be launched. The RPC server i... Read more

http://www.asiatechtrade.com/runcore/runcore-v-msata.html I might get this but I'm not sure about the compatibility as certain X220's are having problems with the msata port..

Answer:Will this msata work with the X220 / X220 Tablet?

I was keeping an eye on those too, but I'm sure they won't work on the X220s that have the mSATA recognition problem. Also, I would like to know the mSATA speed on the X220. Is is 3Gbps (Sata II) or 6Gbps (Sata III)?

Today my basically new x220 dropped from maybe 2 feet and the case ( where the heat grill is) broke a bit. The edge of the screen is split and the entire back and hinge where the monitor meets the keyboard is dented ( it looks as if the heat sink may be bent up. what are the steps I need to follow to get this fixed? I have ~270 days of warranty left.  There is a "compucom" service center near me, but what is the quickest way to get this repaired?

Answer:Help With repairing an in warranty x220? Damaged X220

Your standard warranty won't cover the repair on user induced damages. You should call Lenovo warranty to find out the best way to get it fixed. But i would imagine it won't be cheap.

Hi all, The subject. Windows Log-in time takes too much time. Vefore it was like: Swipe finger - x220 starts - automatically goes through HDD and Master Password authorization - Windows starts - Fingerprint software starts - Automatically logs me in to the system- another 3-5 seconds until all software loads completely and I can start to work. Now it is like: Swipe finger - x220 starts - automatically goes through HDD and Master Password authorization - Windows starts - Fingerprint Software starts (5-6 sec longer than before) - Process of authorization (another 4-5 secs) - Login screen disappears and gray screen appears instead (another 4-5 secs) - Blank windows desktop (2-3 secs) - Another 3-5 secsonds until all software loads completely and I can start to work. Before it was very quick, probably 8 seconds from Fingerprint software start and to complete software load. I have SSD installed and it's S.M.A.R.T. is OK. I have tried to uninstall Fingerprint reader software and driver and start windows conventionally using my password. I have got my 8 seconds form Login screen to ready, so i assume the problem is in Fingerprint reader. What can I do? Thanks in advance.

Answer:Probably Fingerprint Reader Issue. Windows Log-in takes too long. Windows Home Pro x64. X220 i7

I checked it here on some test systems and I'm not seeing any delay like that.  On my systems, it's like your "before" scenario.

I'm not really following what you are saying with the "after" scenario, especially the parts about the gray screen and blank windows desktop.  So can you take a video of the complete boot and post it?  Maybe it will help me understand what is happening.

If you can remember when this started happening, look in Control Panel -> Programs and Features and sort by install date.  See if you can find a software install/update that happened around the time you first noticed this problem.  I would be especially suspicious about anti-virus and security software.  And make sure you don't have RapidBoot installed on your system.   http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/documents/ht075364

The fingerprint software (ThinkVantage Fingerprint Software) hasn't been updated in more than a year, so I don't think fingerprint software itself is causing this.  Probably it is interference from another application.

I experience the following problem with a new one week old Lenovo X220 built with Intel Advanced-N 6205: After 3-5 hours it disconnects from a wifi router and would not be able to connect to it until I reboot the router. It happened the first time on Friday, I was connected to our Verizon FIOS router and after 5 hours I lost connection and won't be able to connect for 2 hours trying every possible thing until I rebooted  the router, what I didn't have to do with countless number of other laptops/cell phones. Now X220 loses wifi connection every 3 hours and won't be able to connect until the router is restarted. All other devices in a house work perfectly fine, my roommates probably already hate me for rebooting the router. Router: Actiontec M1424WR (Verizon FIOS) Other devices which were and still are able maintain connections with this router for many hours w/o similar problem:- my old Dell Latitude E6400- my Samsung Captivate cell phoneand bunch of other HP laptops, macbooks etc. What I tried and what did not help:- rebooting X220- turning X20 off/on- installing the latest drivers for Intel 6205 card for the Intel website- installing/uninstalling Intel Wifi tools and Access Connections- restoring from a backup (not a complete factory setting restore)- setting DNS/IPs manually for IPv4 and turning off IPv6 I tried to collect some logging with netsh tracing and it only tells that the driver disconnects during acquisition. Some clue I dis... Question: Freezing Issue

Hi. I'm having a problem with my HP Pavilion dv7-3065dx. Whenever I try to run any games that are processor- or graphics-intensive, like Fallout 3 or Half-Life 2, I can only have the games run for a few minutes before my computer crashes to a black screen with intermittent white vertical lines on it. I've tried to boot these games in Safe Mode, but they won't run there at all. I want to know if there's a way to fix this, as I was previously able to run both games with no problems whatsoever, or if I'll have to stew in my non-gaming misery.

Thank you very much in advance,
Lincoln Forsell

Answer:Freezing Issue

Hi,

Update your graphics drivers from here as the first step: http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/Pages/index.aspx

Then if the problem still continues run a Graphics Stress test to see whether your Graphics Card is faulty.

Question: Freezing Issue

So I ran into an issue on a computer that I was helping somebody with. When they are in any web browser (doesn't matter which one)... normally with videos or lots of pictures or advertisements but not sure if it matters or not... it will just randomly freeze up. Some of the times when it freezes it will black screen. Mouse is still movable... and when it doesn't black screen you're able to close out of the open browser windows without issue, but can't close out the process for the final instance of the browser... and can't reopen the browser... also the computer refuses to shutdown/restart also at this point and has to be hard shut down.

They are on Windows 10 64 bit FYI

I found this video on youtube:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=apNUuC4tKHc

We tried turning the link state power management off... and it solved the issue, but every time the computer is restarted or turned off and on... the setting reverts back from it's off state to being on again.

Wanted some input on if you guys believe this guy is correct in assuming it's a video card issue... the user of the computer wants the issue resolved and we are currently looking at buying a new video card and power supply unit in order to power the new card... but we are worried about spending the money without knowing for sure that that's the issue.

Any feedback on that appreciated!

Question: Odd freezing issue

A few days ago when starting up the computer there was some error (I wasn't present at the error and this is the best description I can get of it) where the computer kicked you into one of the startup menus and asked you where to boot windows from (from the hard drive, a removable disc or something else). Once windows started up the desktop froze and a few seconds later the tower started buzzing/whining and we had to do a hard reset to get it running again.

After the hard reset the computer ran fine for the rest of the day but the freeze/whine happened again this morning and we had to reset the computer again.

The regular user of the computer uses nothing but autocad and e-mail and isn't the most technologically savvy person so I have trouble believing it is virus related. I also run regular spyware and virus scans and I've never turned up even one piece of spyware on the computer.

The only thing which comes close to this in my experience is when the motherboard started to die on an old computer in my family but I just wanted to get a second opinion before I started sounding the doom gong.

First backup all your useful data now (In case of hardware failure)

Buzzing and whining once windows was up and running combined with the fact of the desktop freeze leads me to suspect the HD (hard drive)

If you are doing your scans I do not think it's spy/malware

NOTE: I have repaired systems that buzzed and sounded like a kirby vacuum by simply making sure the internal cables are not contacting any fans and checking all fans and heatsinks for dust. Definitely check this first--Remember to power off and unplug your pc b4 opening

Thank you for reading, maybe you can help me? My computer is custom-built and I haven't ever had a very serious problem with it, besides for a keylogging issue that happened to find it's way to my computer through my sister's network.

Recently, my computer will just freeze for seemingly no reason at all. I can do simple things, but when I try and multi-task I think that's the problem. I really can't be sure! I've defragmented my computer, cleaned up the C drive, and done full three-hour scans for viruses, rootware, malware, adware, and the like. Nothing. It's worth mentioning that after I defragmented, my computer handles everything near-instant now, just like it used to. But like I said, it will randomly freeze for seemingly no reason. This is immensely frustrating, and I appreciate any help you might offer, I know you have other problems to worry about on these forums and don't have to help me. I don't know what else to do! I've troubleshot to my fullest extent and I can't seem to find anything wrong.

I did have a power outage some two (maybe three or four) months ago that turned my computer off. After power was restored, I turned it on and it started omitting this very strange grinding noise. I opened up the case to look at it but nothing was interfering with the fans, so I couldn't understand what was happening. Performance wise, nothing seemed to be wrong once I logged in. Everytime I start my computer, about 10 minutes after the desktop loads, it will freeze regardless of what I'm doing at the time. I've left it alone to load everything, I've purposely dont several things at once, and everything in between [as dumb as that sonds I thought it was actually a viable idea].

I have:
AMD Anthlon 64 2.5GHz 3200+
1GB RAM, 250GB harddrive as well as 500gb External
nVIDIA GeForce GT

I have recently installed a third fan in an attempt to solve the problem to no avail. I have run a Glary Registry Repair in hopes to solve the problem, but I find that I do not have enough time from when I can run a virus scan to when my computer freezes to complete said scan rendering it useless. I can get onto the internet but I rarely have time to spend more than 5 minutes on it before the freeze. Resetting the computer makes no difference, nor did cleaning it. I left it off for an extended period of time which also made no difference whatsoever. Please help - - - I need that cimputer because it has all of my files on it!

Answer:Another issue with freezing

Did freezing start after any new driver, software, hardware install/changes?
And what operating system/service pack level are you running?

Things to try

See if problem happens when you boot into safe mode
Check how much hard disk free space you have? maybe little/none available?
Check your disk for file system errors. When computer starts Start->Run, enter cmd. Then chkdsk /r
It'll probably tell you needs to be scheduled on next boot. so reboot to let it run
It will make multiple passes on hard drive to check file system integrity and look for bad sectors (i.e. damaged) and try to fix problems
DON'T be alarmed if on one of the passes the output appears to hang (is a slooow pass and will look that way esp. if you have a large disk). Just let it run. tho imagine one hour per pass is a reasonable limit if it should really ever hang on you

Try installing a tool like Speedfan to give you output on internal temperatures to see if a problem
Guess you can start with those and report back

Question: PC freezing issue

Hi, I have been experiencing this issue for a bit now. PC would randomly freeze while I am playing a game "dota 2" or watching a video with multiple videos paused in the background. even sometimes when I am reading an e-book or a pdf. I check the temprature of all hardware and its always within 30-40c when this happen other than when playing games where it reaches 60+C. this used to happen on win 8.1 and still happens on win 10. I tried to upgrade the video drivers but when I download the intel one from hp and try to set it up it says something similar to " this product is not supported" do I need to upgrade any of my hardware? if so then what should I buy that will fit?I really appreciate taking the time to read all this and answering it. thank you.

Question: Freezing Issue (?)

Hope this is the right section.

The most peculiar things have been going on with my computer. While browsing the web, etc sometimes my computer will "freeze". Why do I put quotation marks? Because everything locks up,I can't access the start menu, etc but the mouse still moves, and I can access ctrl alt delete menu. From there, if I hit log off/shut down, the computer proceeds to do just that. Now, maybe 40% of the time the computer will "fix" itself from these freezes and resume activity.

Someone told me it might be my processor, I have a gaming laptop that's an i7 1.73 GHz that increases as the PC needs it. But if my processor was going, I wouldn't be able to play games. I fired up Counter Strike: Global Offensive today and it ran great.

This whole situation has me perplexed.

I'm able to force the freeze by copying large amounts of texts in a browser. (Note: I tried to achieve the same effect by copying large amounts of text from a wordpad document, it copied fine, no freeze.) I have a feeling it's browser-related, but I've tried 5 browsers these past few days (Opera, Firefox, Chrome, IE, etc) and they all present the issue.

Info about my computer:

Asus G73JH
6GB RAm
640GB Hard Drive
ATi Radeon 5870 Mobility

I would do a system restore, but mine only go back to 7/30, and I was having the issues back then as well.

Someone else suggested that explorer.exe is corrupted, but why doesn't the copying large amounts ... Read more

Answer:Freezing Issue (?)

Welcome to TSG.

Does this only happen in your browser? If so, you can try running your browser in safe mode. A plugin may be causing this freezing.

If that doesn't work, try booting your computer into safe mode. Upon booting your computer, continuously press f8 until the advanced boot menu screen appears. Then, select safe mode with networking.

Alrighty i'll start from the beginning. I had some problems with viruses and spyware taking apart windows for about 6 months now. I was gettind raid data access failure and .dll errors pretty regularly. One day the computer wouldnt boot at all, it would just sit at the windows xp loading screen and it wouldnt boot into safe mode either. So after doing a fresh install of XP without a raid setup on the first hard drive, everything was fine and dandy for 2 days.

Well last night it decided to freeze on me while i was playing WoW. I couldn't ctrl+alt+delete, nothing was responsive but my mouse cursor was still moving. I had to force a restart by pushing the button on the front and after i did that, it wouldnt boot into windows again or into safe mode. So I decided to do a fresh XP install on the other hard drive.

It went well. Everything got installed and I was up to sp3 on XP until it froze again. I powered it down, restarted no problem and about 2-3 minutes after windows loads it freezes again. I can still move the mouse cursor but I can't click on anything or use keyboard commands. On a suggestion from a friend I moved the sata cable from sata 1 to sata 2 thinking it might be... Read more

Answer:Freezing Issue

You already re-installed XP and still get these freezes?

I would do the following shotgun approach:

1. Update bios
2. Update chipset drivers and ALL other hardware drivers
3. Run www.memtest.org on my memory to see if my ram is failing
4. Run a hard drive diagnosis program on the HDD to test it (you can usually get one from your HDD maker's website

Also, right click on "my computer" then "manage" then "event viewer" and see what kinds of errors are being reported to try and get some hints as to what is causing the freezes in there.

Oh, and welcome to Techspot!

I've been to this forum before with a dumb question before about my pc freezing (lol), but this time I've all but rebuilt the pc with new parts and am having a freezing issue when it's under heavy load. Well, maybe not so heavy, because I have plenty of ram left to be used and my cpu can't get much better for my board. Here's the gist of it all:

It will run cpu and mem burn-in tests with no problems at all for long periods of time, so I know now that it's not those 2 things. I just got a new case and psu @450w with PLENTY of ventilation. No issues there. My cpu stays at a steady 59% (average) because it's an AthlonXP 3000 333fsb (They all run HOT). Now, I'm beginning to think that there's an issue with the vid card and/or the mobo. Here's where it get's tricky. The cpu and mobo and gfx card are new in the whole equation too. I basically rebuilt an old machine into a nearly optimal 400fsb ddr rig. My mem is 2x1gb Kingston HyperX single channel pc3200 sticks @ cl2-3-2-6 timings. I have a Radeon AIW 9800 pro gfx card. The mobo is an MSI K7N2 Delta-ILSR. It has the latest Bios and drivers. My vid card is running the latest drivers and Catalyst Legacy software (not further supported). Oh, and with my new 22" LED LCD, I'm running @ 1080p.

OK, with all that out there, the freezing part. I can get away with watching video (streaming or otherwise) only for so long. DVD's never freeze my system. Other types will ra... Read more

Okay. I know this topic has been used so many times in this forum. I've never had this issue until now.

Recently I had to replace my PSU and that fixed the problem. Now I also did a full reinstall after backing up all my personal info. Now since I did this and reinstalled all my utilities and games, my computer is now having random freezes.
The computer will freeze and any inputs after that, it will catch up after it unfreezes. So this makes it really bad for online gaming.

Check your Ram with Windows Memory Diagnostic http://oca.microsoft.com/en/windiag.asp

then update your video card drivers then check your CPU in your bios check if the cpu temp is over 50

Around a week ago my PC froze up (cursor and everything) while I was just browsing the web, this was the first time I've experienced something like this so I just restarted and ignored it. It happened again a few times following this and started to happen more and more frequently.

Yesterday I turned the PC on after it being off for nearly 24 hours previously and it froze as soon as Windows had finished loading. I restarted and it froze while on the blue XP "Welcome" screen. After a few further attempts I noticed that it had froze on the BIOS startup screen. After that I got past the windows loading screen but the "Welcome" screen was black with a few specs of colour showing through. I switched it off at the plug and came back an hour later and it loaded fine, I was on windows for a few hours before it happened again.

Today I have been having the same problems and I just cannot get on to Windows. Infact it rarely gets past the BIOS startup screen now. Half the time it wont even complete POST, and once when it did it gave me a continous beep.

I have tried unplugging the hard drive and the DVD drive which made no difference. I tried switching the RAM for a different stick but ... Read more

Question: Freezing Issue

Alright this is my first time posting with you guys and i was hoping that ya'll could really help me out here. Ok my problem is that i will turn on my computer and it will run perfectly through the boot-up procedure and i am able to log in to windows but about 2-5 minutes after the desktop is pulled up, after logging in, my computer freezes for no reason whatsoever. One thing i did notice is that when i was watching my processor through the task manager window my cpu was running at a very low usage rate, then after about 3 minutes of watching it the cpu usage just spiked from like 10% to about 75% and thats when it froze on me. I've run my anti virus software (AVG) and my spyware removal tool (spybot search and destroy) and I've run a program that i use to clean my computer (Crap Cleaner) and nothing has shown up. Oh and the problem does not occur when i boot in safe mode (if that little tid bit helps out any).

Can you guys please help me?

you should probably run chkdsk and defrag (ask if you don't know how to)

Question: Freezing Issue

Hi, Anytime I run my media player (VLC) or slingbox - when I try to close the application or the media file ends, my thinkpad freezes.  I recently defragged and have just over 5 gigs of free space, so I am not sure what the issue is.  I am also concerned that the constant full powering down is going to damage my hardrive. Any thoughts?

I recently installed windows 7 ultimate on my new laptop. The laptop i have is the MSI GS70 stealth pro. I bought it used so i dont really have warranty, but its working well and I think its more of a settings issue. Whenever i plug in my wireless mouse's usb, it starts installing the driver software, and then it freezes my trackpad, and the mouse doesnt work either. Moreover, it is the same with my ps3 controller. However, it does work with the hard drive (it doesnt freeze). Any ideas?

Answer:Trackpad freezing issue

what was the original os? did you go to the laptops manufacturers website and download the proper drivers for your specific laptop model after the new install?

OK, let me put out as much info as I can. This is quite an old PC (about 4 to 5 years old), but it's the best I have right now before I can get a hold of some serious money to get a new PC. Pentium 4 1.7 GhzWindows XP with SP2512 MB RAMGeForce 4000 128 MB Video CardMaxtor 120 GB Hard DriveThe problem started Sunday evening, January 28. While surfing and watching videos on Youtube, my whole computer froze. When I rebooted it, I found out that when my CPU usage hits a little bit over 100%, the whole system freezes up. Thus, I had to override my antivirus software and such. I tried reformatting the Hard Drive, but it won't even let me reformat the hard drive, or install Windows, since it also freezes up during installation. I tried to replace the hard drive with two others. Other hard drives respond properly, although one of them reached a critical error (the blue screen), and one hard drive was faulty (when I installed it, it just kept beeping and wasn't detected). After some time, I was able to reformat the HD and install Windows without it freezing, but when it began to check for updates, it kept freezing so I had to turn updates off (same problem; when CPU usage hits a little over 100, the entire PC freezes). I want to know if this is just a hard drive issue, or it's something far worse. That way, I know whether I need to completely replaced the PC, or just fix a few items to last it through until I get a new system.Thanks.

Wondering if someone could please help me out here. When ever I open up one specific folder, my computer freezes up. The folder is ...\my documents\my pictures\digi cam. There are only .jpg files in this folder. Any ideas?

Answer:Solved: Freezing issue

Open the 'My Pictures' folder. On the 'view' menu, change the view to list or details. Thumbnail or filmstrip view will take far more resources to render if you have lots of hi-res pictures in that folder.

I thought my old 9800pro was maybe the culprit at first.....maybe was getting hot. I have an aftermarket fan on it already.........opened the case and blew air on it with a fan.....still freezing. Sims 2 and COD2.......afraid to try every other game.....lots there. So today I buy an ATI X800XL AIW (AGP) thinking cooling issues would be gone and games would run top notch. Welllll.......COD2 looks phenominal, BUT it STILL freezes. I have nothing OC in any fashion, bios or software.......I did have my ram set at 1.5-3-3-6 from 2.5-4-4-8 but since set it back to stock. I have 3 case fans so I am thinking heat is not an issue. I've run Aquamark to see if it will freeze it, nope. Dxdiag shows all normal. I updated my mobo chipsets and made sure my dx was fully up to date........and have ONLY the 6.1 drivers back on the system now to see if there was an issue with the TV software......nope. Keeps freezing. Any ideas ?? Oh yeah, with the ram set lower, the PC still booted normally and everything ran......just figured I'd go back to normal and see. Mobo is gigabyte GA-K8NSC-939.........OCZ ram 1g running dual channel, AMD64 3500+ cpu.

Have you tried running something like "speedfan" to see how your voltages are hanging on?

What make is your PSU, and how many amps on the 12v?

2-3 days ago..when my XP computer is inactive for an extended period of time it began freezing. I click the start menu, it opens..and thats it...start menu stays on screen, clicking anything else has no result, i.e. program won't open, can't start task manager to shut down so have to turn the power off at the surge protector. No new software added, the only thing that I can remember changing is TCP/IP properties on DNS detection, and I can't see how that would have any effect. I know it's not overheating as it doesn't happen while the computer is being used, and I have speed fan which dhows the temp to be okay. I've not had it happen while using the computer but on the other hand, it's a home PC and I only rarely use it for hours straight, and haven't done so since this started.

Ok so just early January all of the sudden my computer would freeze while I was playing a game. All I could do was hard restart. When it freezes there would just be this zzzzzzzzz noise coming from computer like the sound got stuck.

I am not overheating, during gameplay my CPU would stay between 65-75 C and my GPU is pretty steady at 65 C.

I believe my drivers are all up to date... This only happens during gaming too. Any other use of my computer (netflix, youtube, other videos, music, etc...) is just fine. Even in full screen I have not had an issue. Originally i thought it had something to do with a janky driver so i switched the games from full screen to windowed. That "seemed" to solve the problem. I had weeks of no problems at all. Then just today a freeze occurred in my windowed game! My event log is showing no message of actual use... just that my computer shut down improperly. I don't get BSOD's or anything, just a freeze.

I am worried it could be my PSU... but I don't know how to test it. I am not really interested in buying some silly tester somewhere, tearing open my laptop, and trying to test it...

Here is a speccy: http://speccy.piriform.com/results/I6KSIxZuwDVnPA5MkSR5iIa

Any suggestions would be amazing! I know the hard resets are not good for computer so I am worried about playing games and having this continue. Maybe it is a new driver that is buggy? Who knows... I can't find anything.

Explanation:
I initially bought a new computer with specs as mentioned below with vista on it approximately 4 weeks ago and it freezes whenever I play games, watch videos from my computer or streamed and sometimes just when I'm not even doing anything and a repetitive laser like noise comes out of the speakers. It is increasingly frequent and it happened when I had vista so I upgraded to windows 7. I am sure it is not an overheating or power supply issue as I have a great cooling system and I've checked temperatures on the video card etc. after it has frozen and it seems fine. My drivers are fully updated and I can not think of the issue, I have included all upgrades in windows 7 and I had so on windows vista too when I had it but it didn't seem to make a difference. I have already used registry fixes, updated video and sound card drivers, checked for heat and power problems and I am out of ideas. Help would be greatly appreciated.

About two weeks ago, a major update came from AVG to my desktop at work. I've had the free version of AVG for several years with no issues. After the update, trying to use Facebook has been next to impossible. It freezes and shows the CPU usage at a constant 100% while on that page. Other non-Facebook pages seem fine.

I'm not having those issues on my home computer since I haven't yet received the major AVG update. Any ideas as to what is going on? Thanks.

Answer:AVG/Facebook freezing issue

Sounds like somethings broken in the update that was issued. I'd look at the avg forums and see what people are saying about it.

Ok, so I've been having this problem with my computer intermittently freezing for about a week now, and it's got me befuddled. I'm hoping that someone on these forums may have some insight.

Basically what's happening is that my computer freezes very randomly. Sometimes it freezes as soon as Windows starts and it begins loading the initial applications. Other times, I can routinely use the computer for hours without a freeze. Other times, it will freeze after a few minutes. These freezes do not appear to have any link to the applications I run or the processor or memory usage. Also, the freezes usually involve me having to reboot. Freezes to the point where even pressing Num Lock doesn't work. Other times it'll recover and unfreeze after maybe 1-2 minutes of waiting. I have been playing WoW (probably the most intense application I use) on this machine for 2 years, and it still usually runs fine.

What I've done so far is run Memtest, and it has shown no errors. As a precaution, and because I wanted more memory, I replaced my 2x 512MB DDR RAM sticks with 2x 1GB DDR RAM sticks a few days ago. It hasn't made any difference.

At this point, I've also run routine maintenance like virus scans, adware scans, disk defrag, etc. and have come up with nothing. I'm guessing the 3 likely culprits at this point are either the motherboard failing, the processor, or the power supply. The reason I say motherboard is that infrequently, the comp... Read more

Hi,

Having problems with a fairly new M50. Recently it began freezing, can only switch off with power button. Then you have to wait at least 15 mins before trying again as it always freezes before the OS. But after that time will always let you onto the OS. But sometimes will freeze in the OS after 20 mins. Have reformatted 3 times and did have it running once for 3 hours but with some error messages like "notebook policy load failed" and drivers missing. Eventually froze again after 3rd restart.

Cannot understand why the time delay works? Scanned for viruses etc, have sent off to Toshiba but no hardware probs found? Any suggestions? Is it a super virus, that's damaged the HD?

Answer:Sat M50: notebook freezing issue

Hi Adeeb

Did you reinstall the OS with the Recovery CD?
If not please recover the unit with the recovery CD. This CD is tested and the notebook should works without any problems.
But if you have used this recovery CD and the notebook freezes and has some problems please don?t install any 3rd programs. Check if the notebook if it works on ?clean? OS.

Bye

So I've recently gotten a computer which came with windows 10 pre-installed (cybertron comp). However I now have an issue where when I use use my headphones (Razer Kraken) my mouse ( Razer Deathadder) completely freezes. This occurs whenever these headphones (which are usb) are set as the default audio device and I can only regain control of my mouse by unplugging them. All other usb devices work properly and restarting does not help. Does anyone have a potential fix for this? Thank you.

Hello and thank you for your attention. My beloved t60 has encountered a new problem.  I recently purchased a new battery off amazon. Everything worked great the first day. The computer took a light impact inside a briefcase from below chair height the same day. Day 2, on startup the screen remains black and gives me a beeping alarm of 1,3,3,1 (beeps). and shuts down. After a brief google search on my dying iPhone I find a magical procedure of pressing and holding the power button 10 times for 10 seconds and 30 seconds the 11th time. I did this and realied an extra step was to remove the battery and power adapter. I did that and plugged it back in.  Power on! Frozen at Thinkpad splash page. Rebooted a couple of times with power button with results varying from a few frozen splash pages and 1,3,3,1 alarm beeps. I decided to hit f12 on startup right after the splash page and forced it into some other page. There were 3 options to choose from , I chose one (I don't know which) and it booted up to windows after processing. Froze with new battery in after startup so I removed the battery and left it plugged in. Restarted and it chugged along fine. I left for lunch and closed my labtop instinctively, and it froze with the current screen up. Reboot and it works fine with occassional freezing when plugged in. CURRENTLY Plugged in and battery in after freezing without battery, inserting battery and freezing maybe 20-30 minute... Read more

Edit: I've noticed a number of other threads talking about the same issue. Seems it's more widespread than I thought.

So I'm having a very weird issue in the Release Preview that I never had on the Consumer Preview. This is running natively on my laptop (all specs here).

Basically, almost at random but usually during downloads/installations, the operating system freezes program-by-program, starting with the taskbar. It's not the kind of freezing that turns white and gives the options to 'End Task,' but one where it seems more like an image overlay. Usually you can also tell by the frozen cursor animation, but the cursor can still be moved (for a time. Usually the last thing to go is the active application or the desktop (as in the icon selection box or the context menu).

I have attempted to look through Event Viewer, but other than the forced shutdown I have to perform to fix the issue, there doesn't seem to be anything else of use.

For one run I had Task Manager running on my secondary monitor, but on the freeze there was no unusual spike in any of the sections.

At first I thought it was a graphics driver issue, so I updated both the Intel and NVIDIA graphics drivers. This has not improved the issue.

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Answer:Annoying Freezing Issue

Same here. I have not found a fix for it yet.

Things I've tried:
- Reinstalling Windows
- Updating drivers
- Disabling AHCI and reinstalling

It happens every time I'm trying to update a game on Origin or by browsing internet. Eventually the system locks up, but there is no crash dump.
