X1 trackpoint setup problem

Question: X1 trackpoint setup problem

Hi, The red trackpoint on my ThinkPad X1 is not as sensitive as expected. Does anyone know where to change the setting for the trackpoint? In old T60, they have productivity center to control these devices. In X1 it seems there is no interface/software to do so. Thanks, wib10

Preferred Solution: X1 trackpoint setup problem

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: X1 trackpoint setup problem

Hello wib10, welcome to Lenovo forums!

Do you run a factory installation?

The go into control panel, choose mouse, then youŽll see an UltraNav tab.

Click on it and you see options to adjust your TrackPoint/TrackPad

Kind regards
Andreas

I'm in the market for a new notebook.  As a long time ThinkPad user, I have to say the new trackpoint set up bothers me.  I know they said in the blogs Windows 8 users deserve a better touch pad, but I would ask don't us long time ThinkPad users, who've supported the brand for years, deserve something too, but what do I know. Anyway, the T440s and T440p are on my short list of new laptops.  Finally, a 14" ThinkPad with a good screen, but I've heard the new integrated pointstick buttons are noisy and I hate noisy buttons.  It's one of the reasons I've always had ThinkPads at the top of my list - silky smooth buttons.  Is there any consensus on how well the new setup works or anything I should know before buying?  I live no where near any place I could see one in person to judge for myself.  I'm not going through the hassle of buying one and having to return it, regardless of the restocking fee.  Thanks for any help.

I am a left-hand user. So, I need to change my left button as right button ,and right button as left button. I can find the option about Mouse and UltraNav,But I can't find how to setup the Trackpoint's key(the three key below the keyboard) . I have saw the Trackpoint usage type with "lefthand user" and "righthand user" only one time. but I can't find the option again. anyone can tell me ,where is the "lefthand user" type option about trackpoint ? caution, not the ultranav & Mouse Properties. It looks like a utility. I don't know. sorry for my poor English, I hope you can understand the situation what I am talking about. I am a Thinkpad Fans from China.

Answer:A question for Trackpoint Lefthand type setup..

The "Switch primary and secondary buttons" checkbox in the Mouse Properties works for me; it switches the TrackPoint buttons as expected.

Hi,While docked yesterday, I downloaded the latest ThinkVantage Updates  using the System Update Utility for my T61 2009-AD1.  After applying the updates, the system rebooted and my TP stick was very SLOW as I keep it on the fastest settings to reduce hand stress.   When I went into the control panel --> mouse, it tells me: "Unable to connect to the Synaptics Pointing Device Driver"   If you have installed another PS/2 Pointing Device Driver, please uninstall the Synaptics driver by clicking on the Yes button.  You then need to reinstall your pointing device driver for the external device again.  Do you want to uninstall the Synaptics Driver Now? I had an external USB TrackPoint Keyboard connected to the dock and have never had any problems from the UltraNav or the Updates.   Generally, there were two UltraNav tabs in the Mouse Panel, one for the onboard TP and one for the Ultranav USB Keyboard.. Now there's only one "Synaptics" tab which is all hozed up.  I cannot change the sensitivity of the mouse etc.. I've tried to uninstall the Synaptics Drive via Add/Remove Programs - it will not uninstall, it just hangs the Thinkpad to 100% CPU and sits there.  I've tried rolling back the driver in device manager, it refuses to rollback. I've tried reinstalling the older Ultranav driver and it complains that a newer driver is installed, use add/remove programs to remove the newer dri... For a while now, I have wondered why the virtual buttons shown in the utility http://imgur.com/Lljj1Z7 don?t function as advertised. According to the utility, I should get a left click if I depress the left are of the touchpad, a middle click if I push on the bumps, and a right click if I depress the right half of the touchpad. In my experience, I get a left click regardless of where I depress the touchpad. The only exception is when I depress the bumps in the top middle of the touchpad?when I do that, the mouse enters some weird scrolly mode where I scan scroll stuff with the trackpoint. It definitely does not emit a middle click. But, more importantly, I cannot figure out how to get trackpoint mode to emit a right click. How do I get trackpoint classic mode to work? Is there a way to downgrade the drive or use a non-lenovo branded driver to get it to behave properly? Right now, I?m relying on an external mouse just to middle click and right click. I?m using Windows 10 b10240 and, as in the post?s title, my trackpoint driver is the latest listed on Lenovo?s support site (which I think WU actually installed for me)?19.0.12.61. Why don?t the virtual buttons work and are there any other workarounds that don?t involve using a mode other than Trackpoint Classic?

Answer:T540p unable to right-click with virtual buttons in trackpoint or trackpoint classic mode 19.0.12.61

Seems to have partially fixed iteslf since Windows Update (WU) installed 19.0.16. Now the right half of my touchpad performs a right click when in TrackPad Classic mode. However, the supposed ?middle click? zone still does a weird scrolly mode instead of sending a middle click. Guess I still have to use an external mouse to accomplish a middle click when using Classic TrackPoint mode, but at least the situtaion is better than when I couldn?t right click with this mode.

Hi, I got an S230u Twist last autumn and have been really happy with it. At the time, I ordered a set of replacement rubber TrackPoint caps. When I replaced the original cap the other day, I realised that the replacement ones are about 0.5mm shorter than the original one, with the result that the H and G keys get caught on the edge of the cap; you have to hit them quite hard to get them to work. I compared all the new caps from the packet against the original one, and sure enough; they're all a little too short. They fit, but it's annoying to have to go back and make sure all my ""G"s and "H"s typed correctly.  Has anyone else had the same problem? Lenovo, could this just have been a bad batch, and if so can I return the unused ones for a replacement set that is the correct height?

Answer:S230u - replacement trackpoint TrackPoint caps are too short

If you bought them from Lenovo I'd just try and return them. If not dispute on eBay/PayPal/Credit Card. But never use poor quality TrackPoint Caps. Remember if a computer is running efficiently so is the person behind it generally.

Hi, I wonder whether there is a way to enable press-to-click for the trackpoint on the new x1? In the respective settings there is no such options and I searched everywhere, somebody found it? Next question: In order to avoid the annoying noise of the clickpad everytime you press it, I would like to use the tap function of the touchpad while using the trackpoint to move the cursor. Unfortunately, tapping on the pad seems to be disabled during use of trackpoint - any smart hack to get this workig? Thanks to all,J

Question: Trackpoint problem

First of all, sorry if this questions been asked and answered. I've been searching off an on for several weeks for any online help to a trackpoint annoyance I've been having with no luck. I'm on a T61p running XP. (I upgraded the stock Vista, following an online guide). I have the Ultranav utility installed (I can see and change the options for the trackpoint/touchpad in the mouse control panel). Both the trackpoint and touchpad work. However, every once in a while the trackpoint just becomes totally unresponsive and the mouse pointer refuses to respond or move. For like 3-4 seconds. What's odd is that when this happens, the touchpad still works. (I'm trying to move or scroll with the trackpoint / topmost scroll button+trackpoint with now response, but use other finger to test touchpad and that responds.) It's really odd and really annoying. Has anyone had a similar problem? Any advice? Thanks!

Hello lenovo community, I bought an x220t and it shipped yesterday. Everything is fine, except  the Trackpoint. It seems like the "B"-button is blocking it, because it moves slowly downwards. If I press the B-button and use the Trackpoint it works well, like on my X121e. The cursor also accelerates if I move the mouse down with the Trackpoint and then press the button. What can I do?

Answer:x220t Trackpoint problem

Have you tried running Lenovo System Update to see if new drivers are available? TrackPoint has self-calibration which ignores any consistent small trackpoint displacement. So even if the B button interferes, I would think at some point the interference would be calibrated out.

Recently I've been having an issue with both my trackpoint and touchpad. sometimes one works and other times the other works. from time to time they both work. it seems to switch when i pull up a new website or open a program. if one works before i open the program then the other will work after i open it. the buttons are the same way as well.. if one set works then the other doesn't but they don't correspond to which pointing device is working.. its kind of random.

Answer:Trackpoint & Touchpad problem

I have just starting having the same problems as well.  It's driving me nuts.  I thought my laptop was crapping out.  Anyone have any ideas what's going on?  I also had the trackpoint touchpad go south on a HP N6400, though in all cases, the Synaptic driver thinks everything is hunkydorey.  I've updated drivers, tried everything.   Whole reason I have a Lenovo is for the trackpoint and if it's going to stop working, then will start looking at a new laptop.

The trackpoint on my x120e just stopped working, along with the accompanying buttons just below the keyboard.  However, the touchpad and its two buttons still work.  (This happened while I was using the computer -- no apparent change to system files prompted it.) I tried Fn+F8 to turn the trackpoint back on -- I can select the option but it doesn't take effect.  In advanced options, the option to turn the trackpoint on is grayed out. I downloaded and installed the latest UltraNav driver; no improvement.  I also looked in BIOS options and didn't see anything related to enabling the trackpoint. Has anyone else had an issue with this, or is it likely an old-fashioned hardware problem? Thanks for your help.

try uninstall the ultranav driver and software as well as the current mouse drivers that is installed. let windows install its generic drivers.

test your trackpoint and mouse and see if it works, then visit our support page and reinstall the drivers+software

Hello, I usually have my laptop connected though the ethernet, so I have the wireless radios turned off. I have my TrackPoint mouse set to the highest sensivity level in both the mouse settings in the control panel and in the ultranav software. When I want to use the wireless network, I flip the switch and the wireless radios come on. Incedentally, when I do that, the mouse becomes less sensitive. So every time I turn on the wireless radio, I have to go to the control panel and change the sensitivity back to high. The ultranav software is not affected. The settings also get reverted to default when I turn on the laptop while the wireless radios are on. Does anyone know how to make the mouse stay at the highest sensivity level regardless of whether the radios are on or off?

Answer:Problem With My TrackPoint W510

hi rgoode, with regards to this, could you uninstall the ultranav software and drivers from your system, then let windows install its generic drivers. once generic drivers has been installed, change the sensitivity settings for the mouse and see if there is a difference when wifi mode is on and off.once done, go to http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/MIGR-74582.html download the latest ultranav software and driver.do a test again.

I have a T61 that is having a problem with the trackpoint scrolling feature occasionally.  What happens is when I push the middle button, and try to scroll, the window scrolls like its supposed to, but the pointer also moves.  Then when the pointer reaches the edge of the area I'm scrolling, the scrolling stops, and I have to move the pointer back in before I can scroll again.  I have the scrollign settings configured for standard (ie, not smooth or auto-detect).  I have also set the touchpad to be for scrolling and tap zones only (I don't know whether this has anything to do with the problem).  The latest driver (7.5.17.27) is installed.  Any ideas about what else I can try? Thanks,Justin

Answer:Trackpoint scrolling problem

I remember seeing this option in the mouse settings, advanced, where it had check box to use one or the other or both in re to touchpad or the red tip mouse.. I had no issue with it, I tried to recreate your issue but am not willing to screw this one up, sorry. Try that area and also see if the mouse driver is selecting the correct one, and if there is a post bios setting for the mouse functions. Now days with usb mouse, PS2, trackpoint, touchpad, infrared, wireless, we need things simple like a carnival ring toss on to coke bottles.

I just got my new X1, but found immediately that the buttons associated with trackpoint doesn't work. Actually only the left and middle buttons don't work, the right button works, so I guess it's not likely to be a software problem. Anyone has similar problem as this?

nope, you should have warranty still, just call up support and they should be able to help you, i.e. either to send you a keyboard for self replacement or send you off to the depot.

I have an early build T410 (shipped in February with Windows 7 64, nVidia Graphics, i7 processor), and I updated to the newest trackpoint driver on Thursday night (16th) when i also did my Windows update. I found that trackpoint driver to be somewhat quirky (a left-click frequently would manifest itself as a center-click), so reverted back to the older driver. All is well.  After reverting back to the previous driver, I have no problems, but did want to let Lenovo know that they may want to take a second look at that new driver.

I have a x200 with Win XP Pro. I had an uptodate trackpoint driver (4.72), and everything worked okay - I was able to change its setting in Mouse properties (TrackPoint tab). After the windows update, trackpoint just got mad. There is still a driver 4.72 installed - it can be seen in Mouse properties, but the TrackPoint tab is lost so the trackpoint operates at standard slow speed that windows gives it and there are not advanced settings that TrackPoint tab gives!! I noticed that tp4serv.exe, which as I believe is supposed to start the TrackPoint tab is started when windows boot, but the TrackPoint tab is not. I discovered that in order to start TrackPoint tab I have to manually click on tp4serv.exe. It is so frustrating 'couse I simply have no idea what to do - I tried reinstalling driver (it hangs), tried returning to older version of driver, I installed all updates from system update, installed updates from windows - still the same! I also tried to put tp4serv.exe in startup - no results.... I noticed some posts on the internet from people with the same problem but with no results... Hi all. I've seen this issue posted about many times before and can't get a hold of lenovo. When I try to use the "contact us - email" page the link doesn't work!  I have a x250 I purchased in 2015. It has been working great until recently. I usually use the trackpoint and have the touchpad disabled. Recently it just stops working and the only way I can get the mouse to function again is by using an external standard mouse. When I go to mouse settings it doesn't even recognize that I have a touchpad/trackpoint, even after installing updated ULTRANAV drivers. This also extends to the keyboard, some days the keyboard will not work at all. The only thing I can do is restart 100 times and cross my fingers it works one time. I've tried moving the mouse at the login screen, pressing firmly on the touchpad, etc. Nothing works aside from the off chance it cooperates after restarting. So, I have updated drivers numerous times for windows 10 and yet my trackpoint/touchpad still seem to rarely work. I am out of a warranty on this so I'm not sure what to do. My boyfriend is suggesting a factory reset, does anyone think that will work or have any other ideas? Thanks.

Have a look at what I highlighted, thats the source of your problems.

1.what audioswitcher do you use, model name and number would help.
2.Why aren't you using control panel to just disable your main sound card so it'll switch to your headphone ?
3. which windows os do you use, also is 32bit or 64bit ?
4. which version of klite did you download before and was working properly ?
Version would greatly help.
5.How is your speaker system setup, also which sound card do you use ?

Sure its alot of questions I am asking, but its necessary so I can narrow down to source of the issues and undo most of it.

I use X1 Carbon 3rd gen. Windows 7.
Scroll browser, every half of screen scroll, some lines are skipped maybe 10 or 15 lines. Screen scrolled with hopped.
It's very inconvenient.

Scrolling Method  option is "traditional" . "standard doesn't work.
Anyone know how fix it?  Is there any problem in "Synaptics ThinkPad UltraNav" ?

Answer:X1 Carbon (3rd Gen, 2015) Trackpoint scroll problem in Chrome browser

I don't have this exact issue but my scrolling is very choppy, especially using the Touchscreen (but the Trackpoint and Trackpad too).  Does the same issue occur for you with the other scrolling methods? For me, it's like the X1 is having a hard time keeping up with the web pages but the lines/elements do load eventually.

Hi,I have a problem with my X200 tablet under vista: After a hangup the fingerprint, keyboard and trackpoint does not work. After login with external mouse and keyboard I did not find any mistake. Can anybody help? And another question:I want to change to Win7 because Vista ist bulls.... on this system. Is it possible to get an preload harddisk with Win7 and all Lenovo tools?Or a DVD for installation? Thanx

Answer:X200 tablet vista problem Keyboard, Trackpoint, Fingertip

It's not that great under Windows 7 either.... I've tried 7, vista and XP. So far windows xp is the least of the 3 evils. For windows 7 if you really want it (& if you don't mind that some of the hotkeys don't work under Windows 7 - installing extra drivers won't help this) you need the specifics from lenovo as to which installation cd you need to order from microsoft for normal X200 tablet function (I believe they charged about $40 dollars  Canadian for it)  in addition to a windows 7 OS code/key (around $90 dollars - not sure what that converts to in Switzerland, if you're a student).Hope that helps  Btw, what do you mean by hangup?

Hi, Problem occurs after waking from sleep or standby or hibernate, and alternatively  or right click on ultranav right button (it opens context menu). Then my left click is disabled. The cursor is either frozen or not. For the freeze there seems to be no rule, but the left click is always disabled. I have formatted the windows, installed new drivers and utility programs and also new bios. The same problem occurs every time.I have Windows 7 x64 I have seen many posts for issues with TP trackpoints and trackpads, but no resolution as of yet. If I am wrong, please point me in the right direction.

Answer:T420 Trackpad / UltraNav / Trackpoint problem after sleep or ultranav right click

Does this happen with the TrackPoint keys or the touchpad keys or both? Does it happen with the UltraNav driver uninstalled?

I have a T60 that I was only able to use for a couple of days after purchase on EBAY in the fall of '08.  Ordered recovery disks in spring of '10.  Just now getting to use them.   The recovery did not work.  BIOS shows 60 gig hard drive as 4.5 gig.  Had hard drive reformatted at repair shop, where we discovered that the HD had 3 partitions, one 50 gig partitution unformatted. After reformat,  loaded R and R from CDs then rebooted to hard drive and loaded all 6 recovery CD's as per instructions.  Last disk (6 of 6) popped up error messages that \SWWORK\4GEOXCA1\LAYOUT.BIN is corrupt or unreadable, Run CHKDSK.   Then a message that said:  Unable to save all data for the file \Device\HarddiskVoume3\SWWORK\4GEOXCA1\LAYOUT.BIN Failure of hardware or net connection. Following that corrupt file messages, like the first one above, for SETUP.INI, SETUP.EXE and SETUP.DLL came up. The computer will not boot to windows, just sits there with a blank screen after the boot message.  I can boot to the R and R program by hitting the Thinkvantage (blue) button.   Can I download uncorrupted versions of these files?  Is there a way to check the integrity of the files on the recovery CD (some sort of cabinet type file, IIRC an MIS extension)? Thanks in advance for your help!

Answer:T60 R and R error messages layout.bin setup.bin setup.ini and setup.dll corrupted

Welcome to the forum!

You need another copy of the last (6 of 6) CD but it can't be downloaded anywhere.

Maybe someone around here who has a set can burn you a copy. Or you can ask at TPF

can any body help?

Answer:problem with xp pro upgrade "fake setup call himself instead original "setup.exe"

What were you upgrading? Sounds like you need to do a clean install and possibly your cd or your cd drive is shot or just dirty.

I have a dual boot system running from two HDD's the primary Win2K is working fine, but trying to set up The second O/S on the second HD with XP is almost impossible.
I have duplicated all the settings from the working system, I have installed the same drivers.
Hardware manager reports that the modem is working ok, but when I dial up BB on the XP set up it will not connect reporting error 678. Can it be that my system will only allow one disk to run BB. I'm clutching at straws now.

i have 2 problems i need help with.......

first off....

i have an 80 GB harddrive and i previously had win2k on it...it had many problems so i reformatted and now i only have 76 GB free space..this is after i deleted primary, extended, and dos partitions and reformatted...any suggestions...

Also...when i setup XP not all the files can copy...about 20 files cannot copy and if i hit enter too many times i get a blue screen error....any suggestions?????

thanks guys

Answer:win xp setup problem

When you reformatted, you still left remnants of stuff on that hard drive. You probably didn't f/disk it to make sure that it was completely clean.

And it sounds like your XP disk isn't a clean copy. That there is some damage to the disk. If that is the case, it won't copy over right. Liz

Hi all,

A friend of mine has a 5 year old Vaio which is now so slow it's basically unuseable, so I said I would wipe it and put XP or 7 on it, but am having some problems.

I want to get into setup to change the boot order so that I can use a memory stick or a DVD to boot Windows but there is a password on the setup. I spoke to my friend and he claims that he bought the computer and set it up himself, and has never been into the BIOS. Are there any default passwords for Sony's?

I searched google and found some default passwords but they didn't work and now I'm being asked for a Onetime password, not sure what that means...?

Is there any other way of changing the boot order?

Thanks all,
StubbyHS

Answer:Problem getting into setup

Most of, if not all, laptops show a line on the screen while booting "Press xxx to change boot device" or similar - if you press the stated key while that line is on the screen, you can select one device in a list to boot from, even if you can't access the bios Setup.
If that doesn't work have you tried just pressing enter whenthe setup asks for a password. If one is not set that may work.

Hello, my friends PC seems to be locked in setup mode and keeps going around in circles. He has Win XP Pro already installed, and wanted to add some extra options from the disc, so he inserted the disc and setup started. It successfully completes collecting info, dynamic devivces etc, but gets stuck at 'installing software' where the PC gets to around 34 mins (75%) and restarts. After this it goes into the setup screen and everythings okay until installing software again and this scenario keeps looping.Tried restarting in 'safe mode' and 'last good configuration' but messages saying can't continue setup in safe mode and asks to restart. Any ideas plaese? Thanks

Answer:Win XP Pro Setup Problem

Can you restart in Safe Mode with Command Prompt? If so then at the > prompt typeC:\windows\system32\restore\rstrui.exepress the Enter key and keep everything crossed. This should start System Restore - go back to before this happened.

hello & welcome to TSF,

this sounds like you have some bad clusters on the drive !!

this is what i would seggust you to do to rectify the issue

go to (http://www.majorgeeks.com) and get either of these 3 free programs

d-ban boot & nuke

KillDisk

UBCD

they are all great programs & what they do is wipe the drive ( write it to zero's / make it like new fron the factory ) then you can install Windows

you will have to download then and put them to a cd or floppy disk / your choice ? to run them

Question: xp setup problem

This is going to be hard to explain. In my quest to serch the right configuration I've been installing and uninstalling winxp several time and I noticed that towards the end of the installation process (after setting the time, computer name, language, key number, etc) sometimes I get a sort of wizard that asks me if I want to register online (gives the choice wheather to do it immidiately or later) and also which name to log in with but sometimes I don't get the wizard at the end of the setup and also I can log in as Administrator without specifying a user name. It bothers me cose it affects when I want to restore my configuration from my backup. After the setup showed the wizard I tryed to use my backup and my configuration (desktop, shortcuts, etc) didn't fully load, only the softwares were restored. If I use my backup after the installation has finished without showing the wizard then everything works fine and my desktop looks exactly as I left it a month ago.Can anyone explain to my why? Please, don't think I am crazy. It has been happening few times now. I installed xp on different hdds following the same procedure but as I said sometimes I have to go through the wizard and sometimes not.

Question: setup.exe problem

Hi, newbie here...this looks like a great site! I have a question, however, maybe someone can assist.

I'm attempting to install Oracle 8.1.7 clienton an NT PC, which has never been a problem in the past, however, on this particular PC (a Compaq EVO, btw), the setup.exe installer will not run at all. If I go out to the task manager, it shows that there is a setup.exe running, but the actual install screen never shows up. I've tried this from the command prompt, add/remove programs, installing from a fileserver, and even by copying the contents of the CD to the actual PC, still no dice.

Anyone ever experience this?

Question: IE 6 setup problem

Hello all, I have a system running Windows ME and I'm trying to install Explorer 6, this is to replace Explorer 5.5. During the setup it tells me that it cannot install some of the programs, then it also tells me that there is another setup process for IE6 and the system needs to reboot. When I do a reboot. nothing happens. How do I delete this other setup for IE6 so I can do a full install of IE6?

Answer:IE 6 setup problem

You can download the setup for Internet Explorer 6 from that link. Keep it in a handy location.

Follow these steps to uninstall IE (I can't remember exactly how its done on ME - these steps may vary slightly):

1. Open control panel it is available on the start menu
2. Double click 'Add/Remove Programs'
3. Click 'Windows Components' (if it is not listed on the first window)
4. Uncheck the box next to Internet Explorer, and press next (or if on the first window, press the remove button)

From there, you can run the installer from above, and setup should be a breeze!

Question: Big setup problem

Well, this is the problem, when installing Win2k (first official release), an error occurs after the first reboot; at the beginning of the 'real' setup, setup asks me to accept stuff bla bla, then it tells me it is going to detect my hardware, which could take up some minutes...

well it seems to be fine, but when the progress bar reaches about 60%, and my ide devices are being accessed (hard drives rattle a sec, cd rom drives spin up a sec, 3,5" is trying to be accessed), the screen turn blue, and setup tells me that a hardware error has occured and that the system is locked up..

I have tried it three times, and three times same error so no incidental crash

the hardware i use:

- athlon thunderbird 700
- msi mainboard, via kt133 chipset, audio onboard (ac97 chpset)
- samsung 20 gig hd
- hp 1080 mb hd
- acer cdrom
- ricoh cd-r
- 2x ovislink nic
- geforce gfx card

anybody has a solution or suggestion ?

tnx in advance,

Marc

Answer:Big setup problem

Greetings

Well, obviously something is messing the Win2K installation up. Check on the Microsoft site for the Win2K Hardware Compatibility List for Win2K, and make sure all your hardware is on it.

Then check to see if your motherboard does not have a BIOS upgrade for Win2K (some need this before they can accept Win2K).

Then check the websites for all your hardware components to make sure that they are certified on Win2K.

Cheers

It doesn't sound like you bought this game... and I don't know very many games that come zipped up in a passworded SFX anyway, except for maybe a few on kazaa.

Even if this game isn't off kazaa, I wouldn't touch it with a 10-foot pole.

when i try installing xp i go through the pre-setup proceedures, format the hard drive, my comp reboots and take me back to the pre-setup screen where i have to format again, im stuck in a circle. it is not triggering the actual installation when it reboots.

can this have anything to do with the jumpers on my hard drive???
my hard drive comes up as a primary master no matter what pins i put the jumper on, tis a maxtor hard drive

any ideas any1???

Answer:XP Setup Problem

Sounds to me like its booting from the cd each time, and therefore beginning the setup again. Remove the CD from the drive and let it boot from the HD to continue setup, once it starts booting from the HD put the cd back in.

You can also change it in the BIOS to boot from your HD first.

I have a problem which i have worked around but If i ever have a crash could be a big problem. This is a bit lengthly so please bear with me. I Just bought a new computer, very fast, good stuff. I intend to use Xp Home and everytime i try to run the windows Setup From the disk It will load the xp setup files fine but when it says windows is starting it goes immediately to blue screen and i can go no further. I happened to have a Western digital 120gb HD with Xp Home already loaded so i Put it in as Primary master. The New Computer Recognized the Operating system and I was able to load the proper drivers for all hardware. So i am in Business and My Computer Is Blazing fast. My Worry is that if i ever have a crash I won't be able to install My Operating system Back on the Hard Drive. I Use NT Backup and am backing up to an External Segate 160GB HD So I have a working backup but if i can't load an operating system I can't get to My Backup. I Have tried to load Windows Xp Setup from the Disk just to see what happens and in the same place It goes to Blue Screen. If Anyone has any Ideas I would be A Big Load off of my Mind. Here is my Computer Configuration.

Hello again

Turns out my last problem was a dead processor.
so have just got a AMD 64 X2 and mobo to match.
2x1 gig ram.

Plugged it all in, it boots up does memory scan detects the two HDDs then goes to a blank screen and just sits there.

Tried other HDDs on it, still the same thing.

Answer:Ok, problem with new setup

Well, no wonder. You have a mobo, memory and drives but NO video card.

Or were you going to tell us about that and whether you could see a screen for bios at some future date?

Question: XP setup problem

Hi there, I am lost with this frustrating issue. Reformatted my drive after some performance issue and tried to reload XP professional. Setupo continues until the keyboard language selection screen and then reboots as soon as the mouse is touched to select a language. Tried two separate IDE hard drives with the same result. Also loaded an old hd loaded with win 98 and the pc ran fine. Anyone got any ideas?

Answer:XP setup problem

Are you using corded or cordless keyboard/mouse? I understand that installation is better with corded units as most cordless items require their own drivers which will be installed after XP.

im trying to setup win xp on a friends computer and it goes through everything up to where it restarts then it wont complete. it restarts installation. can anyone help?

Answer:win xp setup problem

When you say everything up to where it restarts, do you mean after it formats and copies the setup files and you're still in the ugly blue setup screens, or in the graphical setup screen when it actually installs windows and you configure the network and stuff?

If it's the second case, have you tried removing the CD when it restarts? It should give you an option to boot to the CD and not do it by itself, but maybe that's not happening or something. Might be worth a try I guess.

Question: Trackpoint

I T440s which I updated to Windows 10.  I updated the Lenovo drivers after updating and I have the latest Trackpaad/trackpoint drivers.  I want to use the track point but not the touchpad.  When I go into settings and choose either "Classic Trackpoint" or "Trackpoint Only", the buttons on the trackpad do not work.  Help, Please. Jim

Question: Trackpoint gone...

I did the usual "Windows update" this morning. After the installation had completed I noticed that my Trackpoint has "disappeared"! There is no reaction whatsoever when pressing the red dot and I can't control the mouse with it any more. I then checked in the control panel (no trace) and then had to learn, that it doesn't even exist in the device manager, either. I then rebooted, no change. I then even powered off and reboot from power off again, still no trackpoint! And after I downloaded the trackpoint driver from the Lenovo drivers download site and wanted to (re-)install the driver, I got an error message "this driver can not be installed on non-trackpoint systems". ?!? What? What the %@[email protected]#*%?  Where has my trackpoint gone??? How come, that it has completely disappeared? How do I get this thing working again? Edited: I later noticed, that a part of that Windows Update apparently was a new "Wacom Two Finger Touch" driver. Might that have to do with my disappeared Trackpoint? Michael PS.: Boy - is this annoying to have to work without Trackpoint!

Answer:Trackpoint gone...

I just had to learn that there is a Fn-key (F8) that allows to enable/disable Trackpoint and Touchpad. I must have accidentally operated that button without noticing (in fact, I hadn't even known before that there IS such an option...).Its setting was on "Touchpad only". After re-enabling the trackpoint there everything came back to normal. Wheew. What a relieve! :-) And it (most probably) had nothing to do with the Windows Update - just an unlucky conincidence! Michael

Question: Trackpoint cap

I'm not sure if this is the place I'm supposed to post this. I absolutely hate the trackpoint when I type.  I type quite fast and I hit the trackpoint every once in a while -- but this is enough to really get on my nerves.  It's absolutely distracting.  Imagine typing out your thoughts then all of a sudden you hit the thing, get distracted, then irritated, and your thoughts gone.  ThinkPads are supposed to help you think.  The trackpoint unfortunately doesnt...  Are there a replacement tips that's depressed enough (and maybe colored black...) so that I dont hit it accidentally when I type?  Removing the tip works fine -- but it looks so ugly without it (makes it look like i'm using a broken equipment). Oh and I dont mind if the replacement cap will render the trackpoint unusable.  I just need it low enough so I dont accidentally hit it.

Answer:Trackpoint cap

http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/vlar-443ltu.html

these are the three different types of trackpoint caps. You might get lucky with the first type and there is no black trackpoint caps produced by Lenovo.

You can disable the trackpoint by pressing Fn + F8 in windows and then select trackpad only. You can also disable trackpoint from BIOS menu.

Answer:Problem with loading some setup.exe's

Well the first problem would be that it is not Vista compatible.

Quote:

System requirements

OS Windows ME / 2000 / XP

So that is why the installer crashes. You will have to right click onthe executable>properties>Compatibility Tab>Check teh box for XP SP2 mode. See if it works then.

Plus this should really be in the Windows area. This is not a hardware issue. This is purely software related.

I have just joined BT broadband and was eventually supplied with a voyager 205 modem/router,as per agreement, after being sent a voyager 105 modem by mistake. I followed the installation advice for the 205 which was to use the ethernet cable for a single computer set up. According to the setup CD the 205 would be listed in the all programs menu for uninstalling or configuration. It's not there, nor can I find it in 'add or remove programs' or device manager. I then went through windows explorer,C drive, programs, to see if it was there but besides the help file folder the BT broadband folder just contained a sub folder containing the launcher. So where is it? I wanted to reinstall so had to use system restore and then reinstalled with the same result. Also I disabled Norton IS as advised on installation but when I later enabled it I was continually getting splash screens saying NIS was disabled, and it wasn't, and every now and again warnings of malicous scripts being blocked. I ended up reinstalling NIS. Finally I migrated to BT,the offer being 2mb speed,15 gig monthly limit. I was put on 576 kbs and BT say there has not been a date set to provide me with the 2 mb service though the line will support that speed. I have gone into dispute with them and they are trying to hold me to the agreement. I am extremly p****d off. Any advice would be appreciated.

Answer:bt voyager 205 setup problem

is it in connection with the modem installation, or your dispute with BT?Please don't use any more asterisked words like the one on your first post - your post will be deleted.

Hello All,

Just installed a new M/B (Asus A7V8X-X) with an AMD 2.4 (AXDA2400DKV3C) - All seemed fined but on XP-Start Up it gets to the 'Windows is Checking your system' and the systems re-boots no error messages or anything.

Think I've done the sensible stuff - checked all connections and jumper settings - anyone know of a common cause for this that I can spend some more time checking.

Thanks in advance

I have just repaired a motherboard in a TIME machine and then found out that Windows was corrupt. I proceeded to use one of my Windows XP discs and do a REPAIR. When it got to the Key Code it would not allow the dedicated key code of the machine. I have now done a 'Last Known Good Configuration' and I believe that has cured the problem.HOWEVER... I am getting a loop to 'Setup is being restarted.....' and asking for a key code. How can I stop this?

Answer:Windows XP setup Problem

On TIME machines the CABS files are locked and you should not try and use a "Windows Disc" but a "restore to factory settings disc"Looks like you have to carry out a full install now. Is the O/S Home or PRO?Is your Disc home or PRO?

Hello all, first time here.

I'm in the middle of a XP repair (NOT using the Recovery Consul). During the setup procedure the following dialog box has come up (and never has done in previous installs by the way)...

"Please insert the compact disc labeled 'NVIDIA Network Bus Installation Disc #1'" The issues I have is 1) not having a disc except for a NVIDIA Force3 motherboard CD and 2) I cannot even click cancel as I have no mouse or keyboard function. By the way I have only one DVD drive on my computer so I'm afraid to open up the drive and swap out the XP cd and try this other NVIDIA disc.

Any assistance on this one? Appreciated.

Answer:XP repair setup problem

BCbear, did you get this computer from someone else? Sounds like you may have to go to the nvidia site and really look this up for required drivers for your network interface, and/or the motherboard site for those drivers/updated drivers for nvidia on your motherboard. You can swap out the discs in the DVD drive also. XP repair is loaded in memory.

Hello
I recently installed realvnc on my parents home(no router, dsl, windows xp pro, all updates) and configured it.
Configuration:
1. When I installed realvnc i checked that box that said "VNC PASSWORD AUTHENTICATION" and made a password by going to configuration tab.
2. Then i checked the "ENCRYPTION" tab and I hit the generate key.
3. I also changed the port from 5900 to 1724.
- The computer is running Zone Alarm internet suite. When it first prompted me about vnc, i gave it access,"always give access", so i am not sure if that would be a problem.

When i ran vnc viewer from the computer that has vnc server installed it worked fin, I was able to log on and it asked me for password. But when I came back to my home and tryed to connect to my parents home pc(vnc server) with my computer I got the following message:

FAILED TO CONNECT: CONNECTION REFUSED (10061)

the day before today, I got a similar message but it said that the connection timed out.
Any help would be appreciated.

I'm new to networking and wireless. Forgive me if I'm missing something obvious.

I have a Dell Inspiron 5000 laptop running Win98SE, a new Linksys BEFCMU10v4 cable modem, a WRT54G router, and a WPC54G notebook adapter. Just connected to Cox high speed internet and this works fine wired through the modem directly to the laptop via a USB cable. The plan was to set this up so that the computer was not wired to the modem or router. I don't currently have a desktop so no computer would have a wired connection to the router. Asked several salesmen/techie friends and all said this should be fine.

The Problem:

The setup for the router says to first connect it to the computer with an ethernet cable. I assume this means that to set things up you first need to establish a wired connection through the router - and not just from the modem. I'm happy to do that but I don't have any ethernet port on my computer. I've tried setting up the wireless adapter in hopes that I'd be able to get them to recognize one another - but no luck. Does this mean I'm going to have to buy a PCMCIA card with a ethernet port just to set this up? Surely I'm missing something.

Thanks in advance.

TL

Answer:Wireless setup problem

It's certainly advisable to use an ethernet connection when configuring the router. For example, when you enable or change the wireless encryption, you immediatly lose any wireless connections. If you messed up the key, you find yourself resetting to factory settings and starting over.

But buying an ethernet card for Windows 98SE just to configure the router goes against my tightwad nature. Just be careful, and be prepared to start over sometimes.

A quick look at your router's manual says that the default SSID (wireless signal's name) is "linksys" and it operates by default in "mixed" mode--you can connect with either a 'b' or 'g' adapter.

So, with modem and router off, connect them. Plug in modem, then router. Then use your adapter's utility to view or scan for signals--you should see and connect to linksys. If successful, use you browser to login to the router, address 192.168.1.1.

With my cable ISP and Motorola cable modem I have to visit an ISP web site to change from USB to ethernet (or vice versa) modem connection.

Ok, i dont know if im wrong here or not so im looking for general advice here. I have an Asus A7N8X Deluxe Mobo. I just got the Logitech X-530 5.1 Speaker system. Now the A7N8X Deluxe has built in 6ch audio, so i originally set up the speakers to use the designated center/sub and rear surround jacks. But when i did tone tests the center wouldnt get the signal right. Then i used the setup wizard and have them all using the Green Blue and Red jacks. The red used to be the Mic jack. Now when i use the nvidia nforce control panel and do a tone test all the speakers respond properly. But when i try to listen to audio only a few work. With winamp, only the front Left and Right speakers get signal, with iTunes or windows media player everything but the center get signal. I was under the impression that all the speakers would get signal. I also tried watching a DVD with 5.1 and still the center isnt getting signal. Am i wrong here or is there something actually wrong? The DVD was disc 1 of Family Guy Volume One. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Guys.
-Lalaji

Answer:Problem with 5.1 speaker setup

When you are listening to music you will only get sound in the front speakers and subwoofer because its just 2 channel stereo. There is usually a setting like Audio Expander or Surround that will send the audio to all the speakers while listening to 2 channel audio. To get true 6 channel sound the audio player you're using has to support. The basic DVD player software ususally only supports 2 channel sound. You have to pay for an upgrade to surround sound. If it does support surround then you may need to go into the audio properties and choose between 2.1, 4.1, 5.1 and so on.
