X201s - New Synaptics UltraNav Driver has removed TrackPoint icon from Notification Area.

Question: X201s - New Synaptics UltraNav Driver has removed TrackPoint icon from Notification Area.

Today I used ThinkVantage Update to download system updates from Lenovo.Optional updates included "Synaptics UltraNav Driver for WinXP and Win7- WW-" version 15.2.14.0which was downloaded and installed. Now the trackpoint icon in the notification area is gone.Clicking on the Mouse section in the Control Panel brings up an error window:"Synaptics Pointing DeviceUnable to connect to Synaptics Pointing Device Driver. If you have installed another PS/2 Pointing Device Driver pleaseuninstall the Synaptics driver by clicking on the Yes button. You thenneed to reinstall your pointing device driver for your external device again.Do you want to uninstall the Synaptics driver now?Yes / No"Clicking on No takes me to the usual looking Mouse Properties window, with 5 tabs including "Pointer Options".Clicking on that produces the normal Motion, Snap-to and Visibility subwindows. But the Trackpoint tab is now gone. The trackpoint still works fine and the trackpad is now on and also works.(Before all this happened, I had the trackpad turned off.)Why has this happened? How can I get the trackpoint icon back in the Notification Area? How can I get control back over the trackpoint motion, whether or not the trackpad is operational, middle button scrolling etc?Anyone got any ideas?

Preferred Solution: X201s - New Synaptics UltraNav Driver has removed TrackPoint icon from Notification Area.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I just got a new T61p running Vista business and was configuring the look & feel of it related to the trackpoint.  I completed all of the normal 'first time setup' chores; registration, software & driver updates, user definition and savepoint. I went to the Control Panel,  Hardware & Sound, Mouse, Mouse Properties/UltraNav panel.  Once there, I played around with the TrackPoint by: clicking the TrackPoint Settings buttonselecting the Magnifying Glass optionclicking the Choose Scrolling or Magnifying Glass Function Settings buttonselecting the Large Size Magnifying Glass optionclicking the Ok buttonclicking the Apply button on TrackPoint Propertiesclicking the Ok button on TrackPoint Propertiesselecting the Use advanced features only - the Magnifying Glass feature didn't seem to work when the 'pointing device' option was enabledclicking the Apply button on UltraNav I was then able to use the TrackPoint as a roving Magnifying Glass, which was a 'neat' feature that quickly became unusable.  (Normal typing lead to frequent brushes of the TrackPoint which caused the Magnifying Glass to pop up when & where I didn't want it, etc.) I tried to undo the feature by resetting it to a Scrolling only with 'Use as pointing device with advanced features' setting - clicking Apply/Ok as needed - but to no avail.  The TrackPoint didn't resume it's 'pointing device' functionality. I then reset it to M... I currently created a new user account in XP in order to circumvent a couple of problems i was having with my touchpad/trackstick combo on my laptop. I removed some dead reg keys with RegCleaner before deleting the old user account. Now with the new account my Touchpad isnt acting right...it doesnt even have the proper driver installed.
I have tried to reinstall the driver but i get an Access Denied error...and its still listed in the Add/Remove programs list. Any attempts says itll remove when i restart, but it doesnt.
So i cant Install/Uninstall the driver, and its not working properly, what am I supposed to do?

Hi!Since I updated last week my Synaptics ThinkPad UltraNav, my trackpad sometimes hangup. The driver installed was: http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/products/laptops-and-netbooks/thinkpad-t-series-laptops/thinkpad-t44... I have the PC for more than 1 year and never notice this behavior. It works OK for sometime but other times the trackpad doesn't work at all and the only that is working is the red button.I notived this behavior in 3 differnt systems in my company recently uptaded to this driver: - T440s with Win7_x64              (20ARA.....)- T440s with Win8.1_x64           (20ARA.....)- X1 Carbon with Win8.1_x64   (344.....) Can you pls investigate and release a new version asap.  BR,Tomaz.

Answer:Synaptics ThinkPad UltraNav Driver

Yep, there is definitely a bug with the 18.0.7.103 version of the driver on a T440s. I had to rollback to 18.0.7.57 in order to fix it.The issue (hang up) happens when my laptop wakes up from sleep. I have to restart in order to bring back the trackpad. It's a shame that more than 3 months later this driver is still being offered to T440s users via System Update app and has not being fixed.

The URL below states that the driver being installed is 19.3.4.17

However, the actual driver which is installed by the package is: 19.3.4.37! This is not the first time where the package description(s) are inconsistent with the contents.

Since installing the Synaptics UltraNav driver version 15.2.14.0 from Lenovo ThinkVantage System Update, the synaptics features of the built-in trackpad are no longer controllable (it is acting in its default tap-to-click state, rather than respecting the preferences set in the UI). In addition, attempting to go to the mouse preferences in Windows brings up this dialogue: Unable to connect to the Synaptics Pointing Device Driver. If you have installed another PS/2 Pointing Device Driver please uninstall the Synaptics driver by clicking the Yes button. You then need to reinstall your pointing device for your external device again. Do you want to uninstall the Synaptics driver now? Which I have not done. I could perhaps attempt letting it uninstall then reinstall, but since the driver was preinstalled, then updated only through ThinkVantage System Update, where can I find the correct installer to run? Windows' Driver Rollback for the trackpad is greyed out a possibility*. I do have a current image backup but clearly this is a rather extreme measure. As an aside, during this batch of updates I have noticed that the Wacom WinTab and Windows Ink interfaces for the pen digitizer have started working: http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/X-Series-Tablet-ThinkPad-Laptops/Pressure-Sensitivity/td-p/175507There is some fringe possibility that this is related but I cannot really see why updating the Synaptics driver would break the Synaptics device; if anything I'd expect... Everytime I either reboot or use F4, and then start the O/S  the UltraNav pad becomes actice even though I de-selected the radio button! dring the previous boot  I do not use the UltraNav pad and want it turned off permanently!  After starting, I can go to the control panel and turn it off agan, but since I use F4 many times throughout the day, it is a real pain!  I had the issue before installing the latest Trackpoint driver and was hoping the new driver would fix the problem, but it made no difference?  Can anyone point to a solution/fix?

Hello, recently I noticed that on my up-to-date Windows 10 (Creators Update) there is a process called "WMI Provider Host" (WmiPrvSE.exe) constantly using 1-3% CPU no matter what you are doing. I've been observing this behaviour just recently (maybe 1-2 weeks). So I started with a fresh (completely clean) Windows 10 installation on my Thinkpad X260. I observed this behaviour instantly after Windows finished its instalation and update process without installing any custom software from Lenovo website. When I try to kill this WMI host instance, it is restarted imidiatelly and problem continues. I attached threads output from ProcessExplorer. I looks like the thread execution is deadlocked or something similar. So I started digging which application is causing this WMI host cpu usage. After disabling Synaptic Pointing Device service called "SynTPEnhService" this behaviour disappeared. So I started digging around Synaptic executables. I was able to find out, that process causing this cpu usage is SynTPEnh.exe, which I believe is some kind of main (parrent) process for Synaptic driver functions. When I kill this particular process, then I am able to pernamently kill the WMI host causing those troubles. Well, it actually restarts again, but has no cpu usage. I am using latest version of Synaptic drivers available, which is 19.3.4.83. Is anybody else observing such behaviour? What is the solution for this problem? By disabling SynTPEnhService you loose your track... Read more

Trackpoint + dragging is still not working with the Ultranav middle button as of 16.2.19.2 driver. It's an extremely important function for any 3D graphics program. With the Lenovo driver it's not possible to use the middle button + trackpoint to navigate in these programs! Lenovo, please fix this bug. It's working perfectly if I install the latest Synaptics driver. It's only happening with Lenovo's driver. Using Synaptics driver is not an option, because it has no guard against keyboard typing + touchpad accidental clicking. Test:Testing is very easy.1. Set your middle button behaviour to "None".2. Above an empty area of your desktop, click the middle button + try to move the mouse pointer with your trackpoint. The pointer isn't moving! It's the same thing what happens in any 3D graphics program! You cannot navigate your camera, unless you use an external mouse! Fix:Please fix it. Just don't stop the trackpoint pointer when someone clicks the middle button in "None" settings. System: Using a W520 for the reference.

Answer:Trackpoint + middle button dragging still not working in Ultranav 16.2.19.2 driver

I am not a professional CAD user, but I too want to be able to use the middle button as if it were a normal mouse. There is a lot of software that utilize the middle mouse button and can't handle the silly scroll feature. Did you find a work around? You mentioned something about Synaptics.

Hi, Problem occurs after waking from sleep or standby or hibernate, and alternatively  or right click on ultranav right button (it opens context menu). Then my left click is disabled. The cursor is either frozen or not. For the freeze there seems to be no rule, but the left click is always disabled. I have formatted the windows, installed new drivers and utility programs and also new bios. The same problem occurs every time.I have Windows 7 x64 I have seen many posts for issues with TP trackpoints and trackpads, but no resolution as of yet. If I am wrong, please point me in the right direction.

I installed and activated Windows 10 on a pair of X-series laptops, an X220 and an X201.  Everything was just fine except that the touchpad does not control the cursor well, either freezing it or bouncing around madly.  I finally solved the problem by changing the UltraNav driver to PS/2 Mouse driver, less functional, but it actually works.  When I ran the Windows 10 update, it reinstalled the UltraNav driver, so I had to revert back to the PS/2 driver and reboot.  (The UltraNav driver downloaded from the Lenovo site is equally defective.) Yes, I know these are older systems, but can't Synaptics do a working driver?  Or maybe Microsoft could install the basic PS/2 Mouse driver as the default?  I must be dreaming.  Anyway, the problem of a properly function touchpad has a solution.

Hi Folks, My X121e has been working fine for almost a year but the other evening I ran "Update and Drivers".  One of the new drivers was the UltraNav version 16.1.1.0 which I duly downloaded and installed.  After rebooting I found that the TrackPoint worked fine but the TrackPad did not. I checked the settings and the TouchPad is enabled and it even works at the Windows 7 login screen and for a while after that (I assume the UltraNav driver gets loaded at some point and then it stops working?). I removed the new driver and Windows installed version 15.3.34.0 but I still get the same problem. Could someone please tell me how to resolve this? Many thanks Paddy

Answer:URGENT: Synaptics UltraNav driver problem on Windows 7/X121e

I ran into the same issue with an X130e unit, getting ready for imaging.  A clean install of Win 7 Pro 64 bit, no Lenovo trackpad drivers or UltraNav and it worked great.  Installed the latest UltraNav and After a couple of reboots I got the same issue.  Before logging on the trackpad worked, afterwards only the trackpad buttons functioned.  The removal of the UltraNav altogether fixed it.   May be a 64 bit issue...?  I may be doing a 32 bit install on the same unit, to troubleshoot a seperate isue....if that seems to make the trackpad issue dissappear, I'll let you know.

Forgive me for cross-posting, but quite a while ago I asked this on the ThinkVantage Technologies board here and have only gotten "Me Too" adds to the thread. I'm hoping ths board and its moderators may be more responsive. I have the latest Synaptics driver V.16.2.5.0 dated 7/5/2012, installed via System Update on a T520 running Win 7 Pro 64 bit. I prefer to disable the TouchPad and only use the TrackPoint. No matter where I disble the TouchPad, either in the context menu of the notification icon or in the Control Panel Applet, the TouchPad  is always re-enabled on a clean start or re-start. I have manually uninstalled the driver and re-installed the driver to no avail. Since others are having this problem, I was wondering if a fix is in the works.

Hi,While docked yesterday, I downloaded the latest ThinkVantage Updates  using the System Update Utility for my T61 2009-AD1.  After applying the updates, the system rebooted and my TP stick was very SLOW as I keep it on the fastest settings to reduce hand stress.   When I went into the control panel --> mouse, it tells me: "Unable to connect to the Synaptics Pointing Device Driver"   If you have installed another PS/2 Pointing Device Driver, please uninstall the Synaptics driver by clicking on the Yes button.  You then need to reinstall your pointing device driver for the external device again.  Do you want to uninstall the Synaptics Driver Now? I had an external USB TrackPoint Keyboard connected to the dock and have never had any problems from the UltraNav or the Updates.   Generally, there were two UltraNav tabs in the Mouse Panel, one for the onboard TP and one for the Ultranav USB Keyboard.. Now there's only one "Synaptics" tab which is all hozed up.  I cannot change the sensitivity of the mouse etc.. I've tried to uninstall the Synaptics Drive via Add/Remove Programs - it will not uninstall, it just hangs the Thinkpad to 100% CPU and sits there.  I've tried rolling back the driver in device manager, it refuses to rollback. I've tried reinstalling the older Ultranav driver and it complains that a newer driver is installed, use add/remove programs to remove the newer dri... Okay so i've been struggling to find a fix to this and Lenovo support hasn't really been too useful either. Basically the trackpoint is having issues working even with the newest bios, etc. and synaptics driver. It also is having problems with the old driver too?? Could it be in conflict with the new bios update? Lenovo Support gave me the advice to reformatte as it is a "software" issue and to repeat the same above process. Yet the problem still persists.  What steps should I try next?  Lenovo support seems reluctant to give me a hardware exchange Thanks in advance, any advice is open to testing! I'm just fed up with new drivers having bugs like this.

Last night (4/6/2017) an automatic Windows update just now decided to install the most recent Synaptics driver (titled Synaptics - Mouse - 1/11/2017 12:00:00 AM - 19.3.4.66), which apparently is nearly 3 months old at this point.  One thing this update seems to have fixed is an issue I?ve been having with my ThinkPads for upwards of 7 years ? randomly it resets my mouse wheel 'number of lines scrolled per notch' option back to 1 (I prefer 3) pretty much daily, which is a HUGE annoyance, so I?m very grateful for this update and I?d like to keep it. However, it also completely disabled middle click scrolling with my TrackPoint (yes, I have ?Use for scrolling? checked under the TrackPoint settings).  The middle button does nothing now, unless I check ?Use as middle click?.  Rolling back the Synaptics driver to the previous one fixes this issue. Confoundingly, the TrackPoint scrolling with my ThinkPad Bluetooth keyboard still works fine. Has anyone else experienced this problem?  Any ideas how to re-enable TrackPoint scrolling on this newest driver? System details:ThinkPad P50 ? I guess you knew I was going to post this but its the best way to fully start the removals process and as this is a fairly new malware varient, it may well install other malwares, so the guide will ghelp uncover them if present,

as I remember you have a fully licenced version of Spyware Doctor, you will have no need to install and run Windows Defender.

Hey guys,

A few days ago I started getting a pop up error message when I log in to windows.

Aside from this error, which from what I understand says that it is having trouble loading the icon in the notification area, I also noticed that the icons for some other startup apps would fail to load eventhough the apps succesfully load up and run in the background.

The ones I noticed are:

Netdrives (The one giving the aforementioned error)
Skype
Displayfusion
Steam (only happens sometimes)

So what is puzzling me even more is that if I do a system restore to a date before this problem started, it would seemingly fix it. But after a restart or two, it would come back.

So I'm not sure whether it is some update to one of these apps causing this or what exactly it is. But I'm not entirely sure where to start troubleshooting this other than just start uninstalling apps and seeing whether one of them is the culprit.

So I'm hoping that the knowledgeable members on here would point me in the right direction.

Thanks in advance for any assistance

I am using a program called Roboform Manager. It is a password manager. It works just fine on Windows 8. The issue happening is I did a search for Roboform and there is an icon which say's Roboform Taskibar. I select it and it puts a Roboform icon on the taskbar. That needs to be there in order for Roboform to work properly.

After awhile it dissapears and the software does not complete all of it's functions. I have to go through the same process again for it to work properly.

In Windows 7 I was able to put this icon both on the Startup and allow it to start up from MSCONFIG. Now, I do not see Startup any longer and when I go to MSCONFIG startup tab, it does not show what is automatically starting up.

Any suggestions would surely be appreciated.

For some unusual reason, the network icon has disappeared in the notification area by the clock. I have tried rebooting. Once it reappeared and then I noticed later it was gone again. I have tried going to the customization list and the name is there but not the icon.
This may sound petty to some people, but I really would like to have my network icon back.
And yes I am on the network but the icon is missing.

Thanks to anyone who can help me.

I supplied a picture so you can get a image of what I mean.

I uninstalled dameon tools and the icon is also still present is there a fix for this problem?

for example steam icon has ccleaner, ccleaner icon has my ATI ccc icon and so on you get my drift these icons don't match up.

How do i move past item to current item in notification area or how do i enable/add an icon on notification area of taskbar ?

Answer:Icon of Notification Area on Taskbar

You can't add icons/shortcuts to the System tray. If the software supports it an icon will automatically appear in the System tray.

But you can Clean the Notification Area Icon Cache.

Greeting:
The Skype icon used to be next to the Volume Control in the Notification Area next to the time. However, recently, it simply disappeared. Does anyone know how I can return this particular icon to the Notification Area? Any advice given is greatly appreciated.

Answer:How to return an icon to the Notification Area?

Right click the taskbar and make sure "Lock the taskbar" is not ticked, then select Properties. In the Properties sheet that opens, select the Taskbar tab and click the button to Customize the notification area. You can then set particular icons always to be shown. Exact instructions vary slightly depending on the version of Windows you're using.

Hello,

My taskbar is constantly freezing and when it freezes, the first icon in the image appears. I can't hover over it to see what it is, because it freezes the taskbar. But in order to reset the taskbar, I manually have to close and restart explorer.exe in task manager. Please let me know what this icon represents.

Thanks!

Hi all

Just recently a new icon appeared in the notification area and I can't get rid of it or even find out what it is. If you hover over the icon, there is no pop up message saying what it is. Left and right click don't do anything at all. I've looked in the customise icons section but it is just listed as "<no title>".

The icon looks like two figures in front of a small window, with the windows shield at the front. I've tried to attach a screen shot of it. It's the second one from the left.

It appears shortly after starting up the laptop and then won't go.

I've got an ACER Aspire 5735, running Vista Home Basic.

Is there a way to identify the items in the notification area?

Many thanks in advance for your thoughts.

Computer specs are below my main post, but I just have one small issue:

I have an Asus Motherboard that has an EPU-6 Engine (EPU = Energy Processing Unit, all it does is maximize energy usage on the mobo). It comes with a small app that puts itself in the Notification Area so that you can change between energy profiles easily.

I like the app, but I don't want it shown there all the time. I already tried the "Hide Inactive Icons" option, and also tried to hide it manually by selecting "Hide" from the drop down menu in the "Custom..." options.

The problem is that it hides the icon, but when I reboot, all those settings are undone. Is there a way to fix that?

Thanks in Advance!

Answer:Persistant icon in Notification Area

Hello iLawCDN, and welcome to Vista Forums.

These types of icons are always active off and on, so as you figured out the "Hide Inactive Icons" option will never work on them for long. These type of programs will usually always get reset at startup to show the icon. You might check in the program's settings to see if there may be an option to remove the icon from the notification area, or some other custom setting it may let you adjust to help.

Hope this helps some,
Shawn

Hello Romerqazwsx,

It depends on if you use OneDrive or not.

If not, then you could just disable OneDrive integration in Windows 8.1 to completely remove OneDrive.

If you do, then you could set OneDrive Sync Engine Host to "Hide icon and notifications" to not see it's icon in the notification area.

A glitch has arisen during boot. Running XP Pro 3, fully patched, the boot process has slowed considerably as if Windows is looking for something missing or some file it needs is damaged. The manifestation of the problem is in the Icon Notification area e.g. containing the clock. Hide inactive icons is not on. Nonetheless several Icons do not now appear. E.g. that for Eset Nod32, for Comodo, for True Crypt etc. Oddly some do appear, as they should, e.g. Spyware Doctor, the network icons, Sandboxie, an HP Printer Icon and EPU-6 Engine. All of the actual programs cited from the antivirus & firewall to the Engine seem to have started ok during boot as evidenced by using task manager and identifying the related processes as being ok and running. The issue is that they do not show in the Icon Notification area. Another anomaly: I looked to ensure that I had not turned on Hide Inactive Icons on the Task Bar and Start Menu Screen. I clicked it out of interest and while scrolling the Customize Screen the icons associated with various programs are wrong.
Thus ? Where might I look to identify the problem

This laptop has been running vista since 2009 and has had no

I have checked taskbar properties/notification area

I see that msseces.exe is running in task manager.

Any idea why the icon is missing?

Hi,

I wonder if anyone has a fix for a small yet very annoying problem. In the notification area of xp - we have the option to hide icons - but one continues to return regardless of how many times it is set to 'always hide' - namely the local area connection icon. As I do not use this, I want it to stop coming back.

I have been into network connections properties and unchecked 'notify when limited or no connectivity and also show icon in notification area - yet still, this icon returns.

Does anyone know of a fix for this - a registry hack perhaps - i'm comfortable changing registry settings if that's the route to take.

I know this is a very small issue, but seriously, it is one that is annoying the life out of me!

Hope someone has an idea. Thanks in anticipation.

New to Windows 7, like it a lot, but I have one thing that is driving me batty.

On the taskbar, in the notification area, I have many of the standard Windows system icons, volume, power settings, wifi, hidden icons, etc. When I try to access the options in those popup notifications. the notification disappears so quickly that I don't even have time to get my cursor on it. Maybe one in five tries I can get on it before it folds, but for practical purposes trying to use those icons is hopeless. It seems like the 'puter or the OS is just too fast.

I found one crackbrain suggestion to take out the battery (I have a laptop) and to press the power button a few times, and them replace battery and boot. Naturally, that solution didn't work, but I tried it anyway. There is also a suggestion about using the Ease of Use to set a time for notifications.... that doesn't do it. The notification area doesn't play by those rules. 5 seconds? I can't get 1/5 of a second.

I found a few instances of people having the same problem, but no solutions. Anyone have an idea how to solve this? Thanks.

I've lost my icon!!Let me explain how I "lost" it, if you'll bear with me!!Following all the "mydoom" panic, I updated my AV protection and, although I didn't find "mydoom", I find "startpage.cr" (a trojan) in my system restore directory. Now I'd just installed a bluetooth dongle (for about the 10th time) Yet again this didn't work, so decided that enough's enough and will now get a data cable for my phone. The software messed up my Internet connection and other things too. Tried to do a "roll back" but, because of the trojan, it wouldn't do it. The only way to get rid of the trojan was to disable system restore (and lose all my restore points) and run the AV software again. After I'd done this I noticed that I'd lost the icon for the 'net connection. Also noticed that my connection is not appearing in Network Connections either.... It seems I have no way to log off the 'net other than logging off the PC...I use Freeserve btw and am on XP. I have tried going into the Taskbar Properties and choosing "Always Show" but it ain't showing and also gone into the properties for the dial up (accessed from an existing shortcut) and choosing "show in notification area!Any help appreciatedIt's maddening!!

I use a Windows XP SP2 based laptop to exclusively stream multimedia content between my laptop and my HD TV using the IOGEAR GUWAVKIT4 1080p computer to HD display kit. Until recently, I have only been problem free and satisfied.

All the driver and application software (current) has been installed and the wireless connection is established. An application called SGFXConfig (Viewspan) is used to establish the parameters of the connection between the transmitter and receiver. It is critical for the operation of this hardware combination. When this application is started, whether automatically during Windows startup (default) or manually, it by default minimizes to the notification area of the taskbar where the user clicks it to access the application.

What has started happening lately, is as the application minimizes, it disappears. It is no where to be found in the notification area. I can see it swoosh down to the area, and a bubble shows up saying something to the extent of "Click here for settings." But there is no icon. Hide unused icons option is unchecked, so all icons should show. In task manager, the process shows as active.

So, how can I ensure the icon is kept accessible in the notification area, or what option might be available to prevent it from going to the taskbar all together. (Don't really understand why this application needs only be accessed by the notification area?)

Thank you in advance to all those that may have some direction ... Read more

Hi all!

Is it possible somehow to modify the vertical spacing
of the icons in the notification area (systray) ?

I set my taskbar height bigger than the default,
so my icons are placed into more rows:

If I place the taskbar to the left or right side of the screen,
the icon spacing is somehow became normal.
(But I don't want to use it placed like this)

So what this depends on?
Is it a thing that can be modified by editing msstyles,
or is there a registry key for this? Or something?

No matter how I try to access the Icon Notification Area to customize hidden task bar icons, Win 7 freezes to a great extent. I am running 64 bit Win 7 SP1.

Under these conditions, when I put my pointer onto the task bar it changes into a hand with a pointing index finger. The Icon Notification Area will not show icons and all I get there is an interminable spinning blue circle.

The Task Manager will not correct this condition and I have to close my windows session manually with the power button. It seems something has been corrupted but I am at a loss. I have run chkdsk /f and sfc to no good effect.

I am running some 32 bit programs including MS Office Pro. Any advice will be greatly appreciated, thanks!

Some of the notification area icon description balloons are behind the task bar. You can just see the tops of them. Not all the balloons but most of them do this. Any one know of a fix?

I went through the steps outlined here: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/...ate-components, and ever since I haven't been able to left-click on the Network notification icon. It responds to right-click (Gives me "Troubleshoot Problems" and "Open Network and Sharing Center"), and I can left-click (and right-click) all other notification icons. Also, nothing happens when I go to Settings->Network & Internet and click on Show Available Networks. How do I fix this?

Also, is there any chance that you could increase the limit as to how long a thread title can be? Right now it's 70 characters, and the thread title should have been "Can't left-click on Network icon in notification area. How do I get it working again?" (85 characters), but I couldn't fit it all in. Maybe it should be 100 characters.

Hello, some of the systems that I am building show a grey network icon in the notification area, yet it's working fine, seems to me like a cosmetic issue. How do I fix it?

Answer:Windows 7 Network Icon on the notification area is greyed out

Hi,

This problem probably caused by your themes, did your system opened the Areo desktop experience?
The network icon is transparent, it will show you whatever color the background is behind it.

I have just done an upgrade from 1607 to 1703.

Now in the notification area I have a Defender icon with an exclamation mark warning me that SmartScreen is turned off.

I have no intention of switching SmartScreen on and I don't even use Defender, I use Avast AntiVirus. So how do I get rid of this Defender icon. I tried reinstalling Avast but that didn't get rid on that Defender nonsense.

Thanking you in advance for help.

Answer:Upgrade to 1703 now has defender icon in notification area

I do have the same problem, and a search in the MS site provides the info bound to the following link,

http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;303597

which ain't much helpful. Anyway I am going to remove all the protocols installed, and run windows xp setup once again using the /unattend option so that I wont have to re-install all the software existing.

You can try the same too, incase if you are on Windows XP. Insert the WinXP CD, type the following into your Start->Run dialogue box D:\i386\winnt32.exe /unattend (Assuming your CD-ROM drive letter is D:\) all the best buddy, and incase if you come across any other work arounds, please post it in here.

Regards

sfc /scannow found no errors
SURT KB 947821 does not complete successfully
WU icon set to show icon and notify

tried resorting from system image from April 2015. It worked until the updates since then were installed except for KB's 3035583, 3022345, 3068708, 3075249, 3080149 which were hidden and not downloaded.

no error codes - still getting updates just not the notification they're available.

Running Outlook 2003 with Windows XP SP3 installed. This is a problem that has just started to occur. Once Outlook is open, its icon remains in the notification area and doesn't respond to clicks of the mouse - can't even exit Outlook from here. Also running McAfee Security Suite. This software places an add on toolbar in Outlook to deal with spam email that it captures but this toolbar also disappears as soon as Outlook is used. The only way to reset is to reboot computer. Outlook loads up and appears normal until you exit the program from the main window upon which its unresponsive icon is left in the notification area. When Outlook is opened again from the main window, the McAfee spam toolbar is missing. In all other aspects Outlook appears to be running normally.Do you think there is a conflict with McAfee?

Answer:Outlook 2003 icon in notification area won't respond

We can test whether it's a problem with McAfee by running Outlook in Safe Mode. While clicking on the shortcut to launch MS Outlook, hold the Ctrl key on your keyboard. You should be prompted to start Outlook in Safe Mode. Safe Mode disables most customizations and add-ins, so if it runs fine in Safe Mode, it is more likely than not a problem with the McAfee Spam Protector. You've been helped by a 16 year old.

Hi All,
I'm using my ASUS T100TA Transformer Book to type this message, it's got a 10.1" screen on it, as I'm getting older now..my vision isn't what it used to be. I've already changed the size of the icon's on the taskbar, so I could see them better..is there any way to make the notification area icon's larger as well ? I already have the free Classic Shell software installed on my tablet, but I didn't see any option in that software to change the notification area icon size.
Thanks,
David

So. I am and have been looking for a way to change the system tray arrow icon that shows you the icons that are in the tray once you click on it I highlighted it in pink. I want to change that icon.

It's part of the Taskbar, I don't think it can be changed without modifying/re-writing the core files of Windows.

As stated in title - no battery icon when not plugged in - and no battery/power icon when plugged in - also no locations icon. I do not care much about the locations one, but the battery one is pretty much vital.

Going into "Turn system icons on / off" - both Power & Location are greyed out - and can not be activated.

Any ideas / suggestions? - I have tried all the regular Windows 7 / 8 fixes - but no luck. I DO have a battery icon in the logon screen - but that is it. I have had this issue since I first downloaded the first preview builds.

How come my network icon and sound icon just simply disappeared from the notification (task bar) when I started up my laptop using vista. I have tried to right-click on tasbar > properties > Notification Area > ... But the system icons, I means tick boxes for sound and network are grayed, and I'm unable to choose it. Are there any way to fix it, could anyone pls help me. Thanks

Answer:Missing network and sound icon in notification area HELP HELP

Vista (and XP to some extent) has had problems with disappearing icons and shaded icon selection boxes for some time now. The area on the bottom right of the screen in which they are located is called the Notification Area (System Tray/systray in XP). The icons are similar to shortcuts. However, shortcuts can generally be found somewhere in your folders and are easily edited. Not the Notification Area icons. They are in Vista's cache. A cache is a consortium of executed commands & programs or accessed files that the system has determined are utilized more frequently than others. In Vista, this frequency-of-use is what Superfetch tries to learn about you, the user. These executables and files are loaded into the cache where the CPU can fetch (access) them must faster than it can calling for them from main memory. There is a level-1 and a level-2 cache in Vista. It's all about resource management.

There are reported solutions to your problem, however, I must tell you that I have found these to be temporary at best. So many times, after reboot, cold boot, or logoff/logon, I have found an icon(s) missing. Under one user account, I have never been able to recover the network icon.

If you are comfortable using REGEDIT to edit the system's registry, here is a link that explains the icon recovery/cleanup process very well:
