Wifi link speed

Question: Wifi link speed

Hello, I have an X200 laptop, and I'm making voip calls.Sometimes I have a very bad conversation quality, even that I'm connected to the WIFI with 5 bars and there is a very good internet bandwidth. The strange thing is that when the link speed is constant (for example 2 Mbps or 54Mbps), the conversatin quality is very good. But when it changes on the scale from 1mbps to 54mbps every 5 seconds, the call quality is poor.It happens at my house and also in cafes. Why does the link speed changes when I have 5 bars?Is it possible to solve it? Thank you very much,I'll be glad if someone can help me, because I'm talking over my SIP application every day and I wish that the call quality will always be good. Mark.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Wifi link speed

> Why does the link speed changes when I have 5 bars?

Basically you may have a strong signal indication, but there may be a lot of contention for the use of the radio band that the signal is in.

WiFi uses a shared medium. Achieveable data throughput will vary with the number of other users concurrently accessing any access point in the vicinity, and will also vary if there are other devices want to use the Wi Fi channel space. WiFi operates on what is effectively unlicenced wireless spectrum, so you can be contending with a range of other non-WiFi devices in the same wireless spectrum.

Cheers,

Bill

Do you know how to fix this problem with my new lenovo laptop E520? intel r wifi link 1000 bgn will only connect at g speed - have n-router w/updated firmware - updated adapter driver on laptop  - all other computers at home connect at 300 - my lenovo connects at 54 and router shows it as a g connection not n - can't set it's connection to a "n" speed

According to the Intel website my Link 5300 connection speed will be restricted to 54Mbps over any 801.11n connection. It says I wont get maximum connection speed unless I change over to AES security protocols instead of WPA or variants. There were no setup instructions about using AES when I was setting up my new T400s. I cant find any information about this on my T400s or online at Lenovo. This is not one of my areas of expertise so I would appreciate some help to ensure I've set up my Link 5300 correctly to get maximum connection speeds.

Answer:WiFi Link 5300 - Security Restricted Speed

AES is a security encryption algorithm. WPA is just a standard. You cannot configure your wireless adapter card to use a specific standard / encryption algorithm if your router / access point you are trying to connect does not support it. Usually Windows automatically chooses the correct standards that your router supports and will use that.In order to use the AES algorithm, you will need to go in your router and have your security standard set to WPA or WPA2. If your router supports WPA2, it is highly recommended that you select this since it is more secure than its predecessor. Once you do this, your router should prompt you in what algorithm to use, TKIP, AES, or TKIP+AES. If all your wireless clients support this, you can select WPA2 / AES.This should match what you are trying to do.Good luck!

Hi there,

I have just bought a nvidia shield tablet (coming tomorrow) and I have setup my laptop to create an ad-hoc wireless network for it to join. The problem is although the wireless card in my laptop is a wireless AC card and supports up to 867mbps, the link speed I am getting with my phone (has a wireless AC card too) is only 72mbps.

Obviously I would like the connection to be as fast as possible to reduce any dropped frames or lag which may happen when using the gamestream function the shield has.

I know there are lots of advanced settings for the wireless card in windows and from what I've read I need to increase the band width for the 5Ghz spectrum to allow for the faster data rate but I am not entirely sure how to go about this.

Any assistance would be great, and if you think you know the appropriate settings I should use, maybe you could assist me.

Thanks,
Charlie.

The ordeal continues.

I just received an Edimax wireless PCI network adapter that I ordered in hope that it would solve my DGL-4500/G5 woes.

Installation went fine and everything seems to functioning properly from a hardware perspective, but my Link Speed is holding firm at 0 Mb and I can't get online at all or even access my router.

I should note that I quickly tried connecting using the DGL, but when it didn't work I thought I'd troubleshoot and try the DIR-625. I can't get online with either and I'm currently staying connected to it for the time being.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Here's the Terminal info if that happens to be of any help.

Hi Guys,
This is Viral. I am using an Acer laptop model ASPIRE 4736 since the last five years. There haven't been much issues with it. except for the battery and thats it. But recently, since last two weeks I noticed that my Wifi would stop blinking after sometime after I start my laptop and then it wouldn't work even when I try to turn on and turn off the Wifi switch(it doesn't respond anything). I tried searching the net for this issue using my office laptop and found that a system restore would help to solve this issue. Since I remembered that I updated Java as well as there was this ad software which got installed and I had unistalled it. So I did a system restore and then when I opened the device manager, I am not able to see intel r wifi link 5100 driver on it. I tried restarting my laptop and did everything and couldn't find the driver(it was there before the system restore). But later on the same day, the driver got installed automatically and the WiFi started working but only for a couple of minutes after the restart and then it stopped. So  I did the system restore again to the date when everything was working perfectly and when i did that, again my intel r wifi link 5100 driver is not shown on the device manager(network adapters). Hi there.
Over the weekend I picked up a set of TP Link WPA4220 Powerline (with Wifi) Extenders and a pair of TL PA-411 wired extenders.
This should give me wired extenders in 3 rooms and a wifi boost in one of those rooms. The wired system all works fine but the wifi is a different matter.
The wifi extender is paired to the same SSID as my main Sky router and I can see both devices working properly, however there is absolutely no performance improvement in the room(s) which previously had patchy wifi and now have the wifi extender in. It's like the extender is having no impact at all.
Wifi quality on my Galaxy Note 2 and wife's Iphone 4s have not improved with the addition of the wifi extender.
The internet on the xbox360 in my son's room was sketchy on wifi without the extender, and there was no improvement with the wifi extender switched on, so I have hardwired this now.
I tested the kit with some speed tests around the house via speedtest.net, using both wired and wireless on a laptop and wireless on my phone, and all speeds and pings are almost identical with the TP Link wifi extender switched on or off.
I then used an Android app called Wifi Analyzer which can see the main router and TP Link extender and reports on both.
The Sky router signal sits at -40db ("excellent") when next to it, dropping to -60 ("medium") when in the bedroom with patchy wifi (and the extender in it).
The TP Link wifi signal is sat at -60 (+/-3) all the time in the bedroom an... Read more

Answer:TP Link Powerline with Wifi - No Wifi performance boost...?

It sounds like you are still connecting to your router rather than the extender.
I have a range extender and the SSID is the same as the router but with _EXT tagged on the end so in order to connect a device to it I have to go into windows networking and attach to the extender otherwise it will automatically attach to the router as in the past but I guess you have already tried this.

Does anyone know why whenever i disconnected the AC power (and use battery only), my link speed drops to 10Mbps. when power plugged in, it's 100Mbps. Machine is Dell Latitude E6400 brand new.

Ps: This is not OS specific i don't think, Vista and Xp have this problem so i'd more W7 too.

Answer:NIC link speed either 10 or 100Mbps

As this issue, (or is it a feature? ), is OS independent I have to assume that it is a bios feature, included to reduce power use on battery power.

If this is correct there may or may not be an option to select this in the power management options in the bios, (normally press DEL on startup), the control may also be available from a specific DELL utility shipped with the laptop.

As this unit is stated as Windows 7 compatible, it is possible that this will be an option in the modified mobility centre that will be shipped with their version of windows 7 when available

I need some help/advice. I bought a Netgear Nighthawk R7000 and was not really blown away like I thought I would be with the range. One thing I noticed using my Galaxy S3 was that my link speeds were low. It didn't really seem to show in performance but I would see link speeds of 6 or 11, etc. Even when in the same room as the router it would show low speeds. So I ordered a TP Link Archer C7 which is what I was going to get to begin with. The link speeds on this seem erratic also, but are higher than the Nighthawk. However the range and signal strength is not as good as the Netgear. I am coming from a Linksys WRT54g, and I am used to seeing constant 54Mbps link any time I would check it. But the range on it was very poor. So I'm confused on what to keep and what to return and what I should really be looking at. All the different reported speeds vs. performance is not adding up to me.

Answer:Need Networking Help - link speed

Sounds like you have wireless congestion. Take a look with InSSIDer to see what channels are being used. Whatever has the least amount of channels on it pick either 1, 6 or 11. While you are at it look at the 5ghz channels and see if there is something broadcasting on the channel that your router is set to.

When I first instlled it, the computers both went very quickly, that lasted about 3 days. Now they are so slow that I can't hardly get on the internet homepage, let alone get anywhere, pages take 15 minutes to partially load. But sometimes it's really fast.

Any ideas on how I can fix this.

The link in the Win7 network and connections is showing it connected at 1Gbit but the actual transfer speed tops out around 150-200 Mbit or roughly 15-25MB/s (which is well under what the unit is advertised to perform at.)

I need a way to connect our HTPC in our living room with my desktop PC in my office 3 rooms away. Currently running some plain jain POS linksys G router with DD-WRT on it. It's been a ROCK from day 1 but is no speed demon. My desktop connects to it wired as it's in my office. The HTPC and a bunch of other devices (2 smartphones, wife lappy, ipads, etc.) connect wirelessly via G and frankly this setup works great except for 1 problem.

I have two little girls and my wife is mostly stay at home now. She simply is not capable of leaving the house without coming home with at least 2 movies out of whatever store she's near bargain bin. These 2 movies get ripped on my machine and then need to be transferred to the HTPC. Obviously over the G router this process would take forever so I load them onto a USB portable drive and physically ferry them. This is annoying to say the least.

This is the only link where speed matters. Every other device in the house I'm simply feeding internet access to. Anyone have a suggestion? Should I be looking at an N router? Would powerline be the way to go here? We are in a 2200s/ft condo and there is simply no simple way to run a wire between them or I would have done it months ago with a simple gigabit switch. I'm not keen on replacing the router as it's stability has been legendary. It simply does NOT hiccup. Ever.

having a problem on my new DIR632, searching for ideas on here... Anywhere you can point me for help would be great!

I just bought the D-Link DIR-632 to replace a combination of old router and not quite as old wireless router I had been using in combination for a while. Had added a D-Link 323 NAS device and wanted to be able to easily access it from two different wireless computers, two wired computers and two wired DVR, and connect a networked printer.

I installed and got everything up and running easily. When I first start any computer the internet connection is very fast - pages load almost instantly including pages with lots of pictures. The problem starts after the computer is up and running for a while - all of a sudden the browsers (either Firefox or IE) slow dramatically or even stop responding. Pages, even simple ones (like the Google start page), take 20 or 25 seconds to load or the browser goes "not responding".

Problem same both wired and wireless.

Same in the admin configuration pages for the router itself. When I first start up and log in the pages are instant. After a few minutes the pages are dead slow or the browser goes unresponsive.

Re-booting and or resetting the router solves the problem for just a few minutes then it goes dead slow again. Restoring to factory default settings only works for a few minutes then same old slowdown.

This problem did not exist with my old wired/wireless router combination.

My thoughts:

Got a new type of line installed (ethernet over copper through Speakeasy) and it requires that the device connecting to their router be set to 10mb full duplex. The problem is I can't find any switches that will allow you to manually configure that, everything is auto-sensing which won't work. Speakeasy is of no help, they say they can't recommend any hardware .

Anyone know of a relatively cheap switch that will allow me to explicitly set the link speed to 10mb full duplex?

Answer:A switch that allows you to control link speed?

Most managed switches will let you set the speed and duplex of the port. Not sure what you have, but my dell 3024 will let you set a static speed and duplex as well as the cisco switches I have.

Curious what do you have for a switch between you and speakeasy?

I'm anb avid gamer, but over the last few days i've had a problem with my internet connection.

I've got a wireless connection. Pretty good strength (70% with the makeshift parabola), and when i play COD4 my ping looks solid.

However, i still get lag.

I've narrowed it down to being my link speed (called the Tx Rate in my DLINK Network Utility). Whenever i surf the net, it stays steady at 54mbps. As soon as i play an online game it drops rather frequently, sometimes all the way down to 18mbps. This causes my games to lag badly.

If someone could help me, i'd be forever grateful.

my Wireless router is a DLINK Airplus G DWL-G510(rev. C), with completely updated drivers. My modem is a DLINK DSL-G604T, also with updated drivers.

Can you try to directly connect your PC to the router through wired networking with cat5e?

This way you will know whether or not it's a problem directly related to the wifi.

Their is more limiting your throughput then just the network, don't forget you also have the limitations of the buses that the data must travel over (SATA, PCI, etc.)

I got one of these off ebay - one of the cheap (<$10) ones that they ship directly from Hong Kong. The pictures show what I received; the cable, and a disk with a bunch of semi-random USB-related drivers. I've included a screen shot of the contents to give you some idea of what's there. The main two apps seem to be PCLinq2 Hi-Speed USB Bridge Cable (ANSI and UNICODE modes), but I've had no luck making the actual interface work for connecting between computers.

The other software is USB SuperLink. It allows the installation of either a direct cable link or virtual network mode, but not both. The former is supposed to install a "USB SuperLink Adapter" under USB Controllers in Device Manager, plus a SuperLink interface program that may (in theory) be used to transfer files. The "virtual" option should install a "Virtual Network Adapter" under Network Adapters, but no interface program accompanies it; I assume that's where the PCLinq2 comes in.

There's also some other software (GeneLink or such, but apparently it's slow, and hasn't worked for me either). Plus there are various other USB device drivers.

In any case, the only adapter I can get to show up (under network adapters) is a "Hi-Speed USB-USB Network Adapter," rather than either of the two device names mentioned above. That's in conjunction with the Virtual Network option. I've given up on the direct link mode; the drivers are... Read more

Answer:Anyone installed Hi-Speed USB 2.0 Network link?? (PC-to-PC)

I tried Windows Easy Transfer in the network mode -> it recognized both computers, but refused to transfer files because it said both computer were "old." The utility is meant to transfer files from an older win XP machine to a Vista machine, and they even sell USB cables to go with it, but in case anyone was wondering, it requires Vista on at least one machine at this point in time. (The irony is my (new) laptop came with Vista, but I went back to XP because people said Vista was buggy & resource hungry).

I also tried PCLinq2 again, but with no luck, and my laptop crashed again (blue screen flashed with some text and then nothing) -> I used System Restore, but my wireless was gone again. I'm now convinced this cheapo-cable and software were behind my initial wireless troubles (in my previous threads...). This thing had changed my TCP/IP wireless adapter setting away from automatic, changed my static IP slightly, and I needed to restart NDIS Usermode I/O Protocol and WZC manually to get my wireless connection back. I'm thinking I should just toss this cable...

By the way, is it unsafe to set my Local Area Connection to Shared mode? Apparently that's required to use the cable in Virtual Network mode, but I'm just wondering if it's a security risk. For example, one of my computers has eMule running in the background all the time, so eMule users connecting to my computer and accessing the eMule folders I've designation for shar... Read more

What does the Link Speed mean on my Task manager? Is it my connection speed?I am supposed to connect at 600K B/Band, but Task manager reads 100mbps.Running Win Xp Home.

Answer:Task Manager Link Speed

Task Manager - you mean the system tray with various icons at the bottom right corner? If so, and if your broadband connection is done via your network card on the computer, the 100 mbps only refers to the theoretical transfer speed of the ethernet card on your computer, and has nothing to do with the actual transfer speed of your broadband.

Good Day,

Can anyone recommend an app to display operational link speed/duplex of a NIC? Specifically, this is for a Win2K machine with an Intel PRO/1000 CT. Problem is that the NIC is configured to use 100Mbps full duplex, and BIOS reports 100Mbps HALF duplex. The machine has slow read/write times over the network, and times out for other network operations. If you have anything that could help, I'm all ears!

Thanks,

I am on a wireless internet service. My only other options are satellite (too expensive) and dial-up (too slow - 8Kb/s)

With the wireless service I normally get 64KBs download speeds, but noticed in the last couple of days a big diffrence. I ran several bandwidth tests and all were about 30KBs.

I disconnect the router and go straight to the wireless radio and my speeds are back up to 64KB/s, where they normally are.

I reset all the router settings to default but still have only half speed. Any suggestions??

I've have a D-Link WBR 2310 router that is used with my second internet connection. (The primary internet connection is running on a DIR-615 router with N limited to 20MHz I believe) Anyway I've had this WBR 2310 router for less time then my DIR-615 and it has given me a ton more problems. *Note to self* you get what you pay for.

The WBR 2310 was working perfectly last summer when I bought it (after major configuration etc) but now it is having severe speed problems. I've done some troubleshooting, and figured out that it is indeed the router not the modem. The only way to fix these speed problems is to power cycle the WBR 2310. I used to only have to power cycle the router once a day, but lately I've been having to power cycle it multiple times. Seems like whenever the connection is not being used, the next time you want to use it at full speed you will have to first perform a power cycle. While I am using it mainly through wireless, these symptoms also persist whenever I hook an ethernet cable up to it as well. So its not the wireless function of the router.

I've been having this problem for a while now. I've reconfigured it, updated the firmware, but none of it has helped.

I did read another thread with some steps to follow. I'm going to try a factory reset and then reconfiguring it again, since I failed to do so after my latest firmware update.

I'm contacting D-Link about this in a second, but seeing how I have no idea where my... Read more

Hello,
If you go into task manger and then the networking tab, what does the 'link speed' mean?
Is that interent speed? Because if it is i can download a movie in 10 seconds??
I am just curious- here is a photo of my task manger and speedtest.net
Raggstar

Answer:Solved: Wireless "Link Speed'?

NO
Thats the speed of your internal network - the speed of the internet will be upto whatever deal you paid for -
Whats your download speed from your ISP ?
try this http://www.speedtest.net/
My taskmanager says 54Mbps - which is the max speed of my wireless G adapter in my Sony Laptop
Wireless G = 54Mbps
So you must be using a N router with a N adapter - is that correct ?
BUT
the speed of the wireless is NOT the speed of the internet
Even though I have a N router and my Sony with a G Adapter I'm running at 54Mbps - that only applies to the network speed - between PCs and NAS etc -

BUT my maximum internet speed is 2M download, because that all I pay for , and usually get just under that speed 1.9ish

I currently have high speed internet through frontier, but I am coming to realize how slow the connection is. The average download speed is approximately 4 to 7 KB/sec, which seems to me to be ridiculously slow. I have a DSL Modem and DIR-655 Router, and everything is slow (it was like this before we had the router as well, so that is not the problem). I was simply wondering if there is a reason that downloads are so slow; my computer in general is very fast (it is only a few months old), but the internet is just plain down slow at downloads. Is this my server or is that speed pretty common? (Or is there something else that I might not be aware of)

Thanks for your time!

I recently bought a set of Medusa 5.1 USB headphones, was looking for a good set of gaming headphones and these had been recommended in alot of places. Anyway, after I have installed them and actually start playing sound through them, whether its games or music, they work fine for about 1-2 mins but then there is a slight pause and then the sound becomes all crackly and horrible sounding. The only way to get rid of this is to set them to 4 speakers, then back to 6 but this only works for about anpother minute! Even just running on 2 speakers, and the same problem happens!
I e-mailed speedlink, but got no reply so wondering if anybody has any idea what could be the problem. The power light on the volume/power switch flashes when sound is being played, just wondering should this be permanently on and not flashing?

Hey all
I'm wondering if anyone can help with this one. around a once a day for the last few days my Ethernet connection between my PC and router (Virgin Media Hub 3 in case your wondering) cuts out for around 30-60 seconds comes back on but instead of receiving a 1 Gbps connection it only receives 100 Mbps. Until a few weeks ago this would have been a non issue since I had a 100mbps internet connection but I have since taken a free speed upgrade to 150 Mbps. This isn't an urgent issue since unplugging the cable from the router sorts the problem out but it is annoying so any advice would be appreciated. I have also posted a screenshot the network detail window as well.

I need to make a 50m WIFI link and I have a tree top in the way. Is it still possible to make a link?

As far as hardware goes, I was looking at
Ubiquiti :: AirMax Airgrid M2 16dBi High Power or
Ubiquiti :: AirMax Airgrid M2 20dBi High Power or
Ubiquiti :: AirMax NanoBridge M2 18dBi

Do you think that would do?
Anyone have similar link online?
Do you know, if I can pass VLAN trunk over these devices?

The network would periodically go down for a second and that come back up. It happens every 2 minutes or so. Can anyone suggest a way to solve this. I have upgraded the firmware on the router and gone through all support material on D-link site, but I can't find anything.

For extra information I want to add that I have a neighbor who has a WIFI installed also and he broadcasts his SSID. Maybe this can be a cause.

- Wired internet works fine
- Wifi signal ok, but not as stable as it should be
- NO internet via wifi, unless I remove the wifi security
- Removing and restoring the wifi security gave me back internet access, for only a while though.

All tested with pc, tablet and phone.
Any clues to what might be the problem?

Question: WiFi Link 4965AGN

I have Computer w/ 3 operating systems on it, Windows Vista Ultimate, Windows 7 RC, and Windows XP Professional. Windows Vista was the original operating system but I downgraded due to software conflicts at the time. I hardly use Vista anymore because its too slow on my laptop, I use Windows XP and Windows 7RC.... ANYHOW....

I have a 7.1 mbps internet connection that I connect through over wireless G. My network card is the Intel? Wireless WiFi Link 4965AGN. I have a Linksys WRT54gs2 router with secured WI-FI & mac address. When I connect to the internet using Windows XP OS, I download no faster than 80KB/s on rapidshare, or 150kb/s on the Microsoft server. When I use Windows 7 or Windows Vista, I download at 800kb/s on the same wifi connection. Therefore my questions is: WHY DO I DOWNLOAD SLOWER ON XP? I have my wireless card driver updated on all operated systems.

You well find a considerable amount of info about trouble shooting Corsair Link2 HERE.

There are several versions of CL2 Each new flash addresses a specific problem, DO NOT reflash unless you are experiencing the problem the newer flash addresses.

You should start from scratch, delete CL2 and ALL saved profiles, and then do a fresh install.

EDIT 2:
Disregard that... There seems to be something that's causing interference. Probably from one of my neighbors.

EDIT:
It seems I've solved the problem by enabling "20/40 Coexistance" under the wifi card's options menu.
So since this past weekend I've been having this weird problem with both my routers. As I start to upload and/or download something and the upload/download picks up speed, the link speed to the router drops from 300mbps down to as low as 11mbps and this of course brings down the download speed. When the download sits there at these lower speeds for a couple of minutes the router link speed then returns to 300mpbs and the upload/download again picks up speed just to begin a new cycle. If there's no active upload/download the link speed stays between 270-300 mbps.

Nothing in the routers immediate surrounding has changed since I moved in. I've tried placing the router in the middle of the room away from all electronics. I've tried changing channels. I've tried a D-Link DIR-615 rev.H2 on the latest (02-04-2014-r23503) and a couple of other DD-WRT beta firmware, and a Netgear WNR3500L v2 on both stock firmware and Tomato Firmware (http://tomato.groov.pl/?page_id=78) but all result in the same scenario. I've also tried both routers on 2 different computers. This is all over wifi btw, cable works fine.

Any ideas as to what could cause this behavior?

I have noticed in recent weeks that my computer has developed a trend towards slower web page downloading. It used to only be milliseconds or a couple seconds at most (majority of times) to make a change. Now it can take up to several seconds (over ten seconds sometimes) to complete my page changes. You should know that I use a Firefox browser.

What I have learned that I can do to speed up the process is to either manually close down the selection and re-enter it, or just click on the link a second time in some cases, and the page usually comes up immediately. Interestingly this second attempt works whether I do it almost immediately, or wait a few or several seconds, so it gives the impression that somehow it is releasing whatever it is that's blocking or slowing the download.

If anyone recognizes this behavior or has an idea what may be causing the inordinate increase in page change delay, or perhaps even more significantly why the second click is so effective, I'd appreciate hearing from you.

Note: I regularly clean my browser cache and registry with CCleaner.....more than once a day, depending on how much activity, especially pictorial or video, that I'm engaged in.

Okay so i made a similar post about the Adapter not wanting to connect and always saying limited, and i run complete internet repairs and stuff and it 'Seems' To be fixed for now, though now i disconnect every once in a while and It seems really slow i was just trying to download something that was 1.7MB and that took a good 5 minutes.. Why? Well thats what i was hoping someone from here could tell me.

My signal quality from "WiFiInfoView" Is a good 62/100
My adapter status says a good 90mb/s- 120mb/s in a quick hop a few times.
(When i had 30-45mb/s it was running faster, So im at a lost)

Yet it's still slow, I had a problem in the past where lower signals were doing better and now its the same with the 30-45mb/s being better than the 90mb/s So confused with wifi.

Answer:TP-Link WN822N External Adapter Speed issues

Possibly WiFiInfoView is only showing the bandwidth between PC and router and has no implication towards Internet connection.

What does a SpeedTest say? Speedtest.net by Ookla - The Global Broadband Speed Test

How much is your download/upload speeds in your Internet plan? A phone call to your ISP will clear it up if you don't know.

When you suspect any slow downs (a single site may be slow, try a SpeedTest and some other sites too) try a wired connection. Resetting modem/router and later PC if not fixed may help correct the issue.

Helping a friend upgrade his router from a Linksys E2500 (N600) to a new TP-Link Archer C7, mostly in an attempt to get better range (speed is not a huge factor).

His ISP is Comcast and he is renting an Arris TM702G/CT cable modem (DOCSIS 3.0). I removed the Linksys E2500 and installed the Archer C7, then set it up similar to the Linksys (matching SSIDs and passwords).

However, I was experiencing abysmal wireless connection speeds (pages taking over a minute to load), even when just feet from the router. So, I called TP-Link support and they advised me to remove the router and test with a computer wired to just the cable modem. Sure enough, the speeds were abysmal. This got me to thinking I actually broke the cable modem through the course of the upgrade, so I re-attached the Linksys E2500 and what do you know -- fast speeds are back!

I'm at a little bit of a loss here... I've asked him to upgrade his cable modem to the newest Motorola model offered by Comcast, as I've never had a problem with Moto modems, but I think it's odd that the modem functions just fine when connected to the Linksys router (but slows considerably when my computer is directly connected to it, or the new Archer router). I tested the cable modem by trying a few different coax cables and plugging it into different outlets in the house (thinking it might be a cable signal issue), but the speed problem persisted.

Complicating matters is the fact that he doesn't remember... Read more

Make sure you have the latest driver from TP-LINK's web site.

Please attach a screen shot of the Networks page (don't collapse the Radar, Connection or Signal History) of the Xirrus Wi-Fi Inspector. If you need help with that see TSG Posting a Screenshot. FWIW to take screen shots with Windows 7 or Vista I prefer to use the built-in Snipping Tool.

where i live TP Link wifi router cost US $15 and Linksys wifi router cost rs US $40

obviously i want to go with TP Link router but i want to know which router offers more quality

ie long range and better bandwidth

i have 2 laptops (xp and win 7), one ipod touch and one andriod tablet all of them using Wifi internet

my old linksys router which is 4 years old has stopped working

Answer:TP Link or Linksys wifi router

That TP Link has almost 800 reviews on Amazon and it's almost all four star reviews. The cost of consumer wireless devises has become very affordable. I use those little $5 USB wifi dongles on my Raspberry Pi's and they work great. The box I'm on now has a low cost NetGear USB dongle and the speed and reliability is great. I'd buy it.

I have the WiFi LINK for PS3/PSP/NDSL/Wii. I am trying to connect my Wii to the internet thru my computer. The Wii will connect to the WiFi Link but the WiFi Link will not connect to the internet even though my computer is connected to the internet. I believe the problem is my PPPoE connection. I have DSL thru ATT and I am using their Westell Wirespeed DSL modem.

I have followed all the directions provided at http://www.mayflash.com/pc/pc041/001.htm and it still will not connect. My computer is running Windows XP professional and it connects to the internet by using the SBC Connection Manager. How do I get this to work?

Just found out about the Nebo WiFi Dialup Link for $49.50..Seems like on e-bay there were a lot of favorable comments about this product. Some say it's slightly slower than hardwire but others report it even is slightly faster ??
Just wondering if anybody has any experience with this produce. Currently I have several phone jacks throughout the house which has worked for me but it would be nice to work outside when the weather improves.

I'm a bit of a rookie when it comes to Networking but here goes.

I've got a D-Link DSL-604+ 22Mbps Wireless router with built-in ADSL modem and a D-Link DI-624 108Mbps Wireless Broadband router.

Obviously the DI-624 that I recently purchased doesn't feature an in-built modem so instead of blowing $50 on a D-Link ADSL modem with Ethernet connectivity I was hoping to use the ADSL modem feature in my old Wireless router (604+) as my modem for the DI-624.

I called D-Link support but unfortunately after an hour of following live instructions from their support staff, I ended up nowhere.

They instructed me to disable DHCP and NAT features on the 604+ and plug an ethernet cable into it's LAN PORT 1 and plug the other end into the WAN PORT on the 624.

I plugged an ethernet cable into the DI-624 LAN PORT 1 and into my computer's Ethernet port in order to configure the DI-624.

After configuring the DI-624 via its web configuration web page, I could get the 108Mbps network up and running but without the access to DSL.

If anyone any of the above mentioned products and can provide a tip or a link to a guide or something, that would be great.

Thanks

I just thought I would write a little something for the people on this forum struggling with Wi-Fi range issues. I solved mine after many problems using a couple of high-wattage items from wifi-link.com.

Here is my situation:
I live in a rural area serviced by Charter cable. I have the 10Mb down / 1Mb up service (which has been working great for me, btw). The problem came when my sister moved a couple of streets away from me. She just separated from her husband and they have yet to work out the alimony/child support issues, so she is kinda light on money right now. Unfortunately, her children "attend" the ONLINE middle / high school. Obviously she requires high-speed internet access, but would have a hard time affording the cost. So, being the loving brother that I am, I told her, "Hey, don't worry about it, I'll hook you up to my network and you can share my connection." She said, "Can you do that? I live too far away to string a cable across the neighborhood." I assured her I could do it using Wi-Fi. I then started making my own YAGI potato chip can antennas. I am an experienced A+-certified technician, so I figured it would be no big deal. Well, long story short, my antennas sucked. NO SIGNAL. I must have aimed and re-aimed the things for hours. I started to worry that I had bitten off more than I could chew. I did NOT want to tell my sister that I had failed. So I went looking on the web for some cheap antennas... Read more

Hi everyon! Happy New Year. I received a new T400s at last week.OS is Windows 7 and my wireless LAN card is Intel WiFi Link 5300 AGN. It doesen't works well.It happens to disconnect network 5 ~ 10 minutes interval. I have two another notebook. They have no problems. What is the problem? What do I do?

Answer:About Intel WiFi Link 5300 AGN

I'm having the same problem with my T500 (same wireless adapter, Intel 5300 AGN) since upgrading from Vista Business to Win 7 Professional.  I had no problems with wireless connectivity under Vista.  From what I can tell, this seems to be a problem with the 5300 adapter running under Win 7 on the T400/500 platforms.  I've tried everything, and I haven't been able to find a resolution on this forum up to this point.  I believe this is a problem Lenovo owes its customers a solution for.

Hi there guys,it's my first post on this forum even although I should've asked here first. I have the same problem with the network wifi adapter as mentioned in the previous thread with this subject: it happens to disconnect and after that it doesn't appear in Device Manager for some time. Ussually I go there 'scan for hardware changes' and it appears back, but sometimes it doesn't come back for good and I need to restart my laptop. So..this is quite sad. I've read all the opinions about this and all solutions so far and nothing worked for me. I checked my driver on Intel and it says: Product DetectedIntel(R) WiFi Link 5300 AGNCurrent Driver Installed14.3.2.1This device is unknown or unsupported. Please contact the manufacturer for possible updates. So I downloaded their newer driver which is 15.3 and still the driver version remains 14.3.  This is becoming quite annoying becouse it happens to disconnect right when I am downloading or writing an email.        Did someone from tech support found a solution for this? please! I would appreciate a lot. Thank you. p.s. I am running win8 pro.

Answer:About Intel WiFi Link 5300 AGN

I suspect there are variants of the Intel 5300 card that will work in Lenovo systems, and other versions of the card that are designed for other systems (like HP, etc) and will not work in a Lenovo. It's possible that the 5300 card you have wasn't designed for Lenovo platforms, and as a result doesn't match up with the bios whitelist on your system. Did the system originally come with this card, or was the card installed sometime later? If installed later, was the card supposedly compatible with Lenovo systems (incl your model)? I picked up my new 5300 card from eBay sometime back... it was listed as compatible with my Lenovo T400 (incl a few other models), and once I installed it (and installed the driver, updated access connections, rebooted the system etc), it came right up at 450mbps when near the access-point. Finally, the 15.x (I'm assuming Lenovo) driver might not support this older 5300 card... my T400 is running a 14.x driver for Win7 64-bit which does support the 5300, but I noticed the 15.x driver for my system doesn't support the older 5300 (and states that in the release notes for this ver). That's all I can come up with for now... hope something here helps you out. And keep me posted... will check this thread from time to time. Mike

Hey guys, got a macbook pro(running win7 bootcamp) and a pc desktop at home, and both wifi stop working yesterday, not sure whats going on, My iphone & powerbook can pick up my Wifi network just fine.
I have a cable modem box hooked up to a Dlink DI 614+. Im in my Dlink router config page, everything is still the same, wireless still enabled, password is still set. in the system tray, the wireless connection box doesn't show any wireless network, not even my neighbors. I tried manually adding the Wifi network in the Wireless connection network menu, but it doesn't seem to do anything. A few days ago i did try to network share my macbook pro with my desktop(which i did get working) not sure if that might have caused the wireless failure. But it is odd that the pc and macbook pro now stop working, but the powerbook is fine.
any suggestions ?

thanks.

In general these types of problems can be fixed by resetting the router. After resetting the router you will need to go through the routers set up page and enter your SSID, password, and other wireless connection settings.

I'm looking to connect roughly 2 miles with a rough 5-degree coverage angle. I've decided that this

http://www.hyperlinktech.com/web/hg2424g.php

antenna is probably the best (that I've seen for a reasonable price). What is the best card/adapter for PCI application in a desktop? Orinico with a PCI adapter or has something better come along?

Answer:Best WiFi B/G Solution for a 2-Mile+ Link?

Those with some orinoco cards should work great. That's what the local Wireless ISP here where I live use for there backbone wireless connection. They have had up to 2 inches of ice build up on the antennas and still had good enough signal to support the backbone.

HiCan anyone give me some advice please.I have a relatively recent Toshiba laptop. Model Satellite L300-1AQ with Windows Vista Home Premium.I have a holiday home and would like to use the computer there. I have a BT account with access to BT Openzone. There is a neighbour 15mtrs away who is registered for the Openzone scheme. I am able to link into his system with WiFi but the signal is not strong enough. Two bars max.Looking at the internet, I can see, as usual, that there appear to be a million solutions. Boosters etc etc. Can somebody point me in the right direction please. I notice that BT sell a Hawking Hi-Gain Wireless 300n USB network dish adaptor and a Hawking Wireless G dish adaptor. The High gain 300n gives speeds up to 300Mbps and the G model 54Mbps.Will this work or are there any better solutions. Thanks in advance.John.I will post this on networking as well.

Answer:WiFi link. Signal weak

firstly has you neighbour given permission for you to pig-e-back on his broadband - it is illegal if he has not. If permission is granted you will have to experiment with position. In my home certain rooms have no trouble connecting but others cannot. Where his wireless router is poitioned will also make a difference. The higher the transmitter the better the signal. If he uses wifi could he move it to the closest point to your place?

I would like to begin by thanking you for your help (please help me). I am trying to set up my family with wireless internet, but my parents are technophobes and I'm kind of on my own with this and the antivirus.
But I digress.
I have a secondhand Dlink DI-524 wireless router and have connected it to my modem with and ethernet cable, and have connected the router to my PC.
When I try to connect to 192.168.0.1 as is stated in my manual, it used to pop up with a password screen and when I tried to enter in the default and hit enter, it just popped up again. After resetting, firefox just says it can't display the page.
When I connect to the network on my PC and laptop, it has an excellent connection yet won't connect to the internet.
If anyone could help me I would greatly appreciate it.

I have set up a passcode for my sisters wifi as it was not enabled by the tech that set up her D Link/wifi.

I couldn't believe that wasn't taken care of but I am not that wise about all aspects, so thought I would ask someone here.

I renamed her SSID to a private name rather then dlink, the way it was, and I set up a passcode so others that want to use their computer here at her place will need to login using that key. I figured her neighbors could bleed off her signal, but even if they aren't doing that, it seems to me securing your signal is best. Am I right?

My second question to do with that, is, I set it up on my computer because I was on her signal of course, but she was on her computer, which she said she was going to be off it, and I didn't know. Her connection is still on and she hasn't used the passcode yet? Do I have to set up her computer with the same info as I did on the router from my laptop?

Sorry if this sounds confused, I am a bit. denise

Answer:D Link Wifi Security Pass Key

You're headed down the right path. You are correct in your thinking with regard to changing the SSID name and setting up a passcode in the router.

And, yes, the passcode will have to be saved in her computer before it can connect to the Internet.

So im deployment and we have hardwire internet in my room. wanting to use all other devices eg. iphone and what not i bought a router to plug the hardwire in to and run the wifi off the router for all devices. its made by TP-LINK the model is TL-WR940N. it worked great for a while but then kept giving me DNS server is not responding but i could plug the hard cable in my computer and the internet would work fine? so i reset the router and set it all up again like before. Answer:Wifi not working with TP-LINK router

For a computer running Windows please show the following for a connection to the ethernet jack in your room and for a connection to the router ...

Open a (black) Command Prompt window:
Hold the Windows logo key and press r; in the Run box type cmd and click on OK.

Type the following command:

IPCONFIG /ALL

[Note that there is no space between the slash and ALL.]

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

If necessary use a text file and removable media to copy the results to a computer with internet access.

Hey everyone! I'm new here. Currently have an apple router and have had it for maybe 6-7years. I think it is finally on its last leg. It has become unreliable at times.

The question I have is about the TP-link c7 wifi router. I have a 2 story house that's around 1600sf. The wife and I are constantly online and we also use playstation vue. So that takes up a lot of bandwidth. Would the TP-link c7 be the right router for us?

Thanks for your help!

Answer:Reviews on TP-link c7 wifi router

did the apple router work throughout the house ok
if so , you may want to think about an Apple replacement

its going to be difficult to say if it will work reliably and with high speed across the 2 stories, as the construction of the property and also other signals in the area can all cause interference.

Something else to consider , is the powerline adapters with wireless and cable units
This uses the electrical wiring of the house - again the quality and speed would depend on the electrical wiring of the house

So dear colegues, does anybody have or had similar problem ? Cable is 5E. Other PC-s are already connected at 1GBs and transfer rate is around 100Mbs so everything is ok with the new switch (D-Link's GO-SW-5G) and cables. When W520 is docked ethernet port at the right side of  the w520 is turned off ? Cable disconnected, without any ligh blinking at both sides. Is it possible somehow to decide which ethernet connector is active or this is mechanically/electronically decided during docking which is realy bad.  BUT, if i undock W520 and use ethernet connector at the laptop, everything is normal, i mean, link is 1GBs and everything is fine as it should be. Intel 85279LM divers are the latest one downloaded from the Intel's site. Tried to fix the link speed to 1GBs but without any success. "Network cable unplugged." ?  Is it possible that dock ethernet is only 100 MBs ?!? All drivers are up to date. BIOS is the only thing that i didn't update and why should i when everything is working as expected. Of course dock is external component. Do You know for similar case so i should update the BIOS too ? Of course, laptop is out of warranty since the begining of this summer.  So all fingers (From different people. ) are pointed to that dock. Hello, I'm trying to get wifi working on my x200, but nothing I try seems to work. Initially, in XP or Windows 7, the card wasnt even detected, so wouldn't come up in the unrecognized devices section in device manager.  I installed/uninstalled the drivers several times but nothing changed. I then opened up the Thinkpad and moved the wifi card from the first slot to the second.  Upon booting, in Windows 7 and again in xp, the card was recognised, but a code 10 error came up. I've tried replacing the wlan card with one from an R60, but the x200's boot software prevented the PC from booting up. Can anyon help? Thanks John

Answer:X200 and Intel Wifi Link 5100

Update to my first note.  After a day of installing countless drivers, bios updates and whatever else.  I'm pleased to say that my x200 is now woking in XP with wifi on the 5100. The PCI slot the 5100 card was in to start with did not register any device to be present.  The second slot, recognised the card but gave a code 10 error. I also followed the steps outlined in: kbartke's post on resolving the code 10 on 5100 issue.  That had no immediate effect, but may have eventually solved the problem. I also updated the bios to 3.02. The strange thing that seemed to work was changing the machine's name.  Once restarted, the wifi light came on. I now have to figure out how to get rid of all the bloatware i managed to install in my attempts to get this working... John

Hi guys,

I have a wierd problem and can not solve it by myself nor google is any help.

Since the very beggning and two firmware versions back when I am using WLAN interface I can't connect to my office using VPN connection. If I switch to cable connection I am just fine and VPN works as expected. Tried everything - turning off SPI firewall, hardware NAT, etc - everything that could alter the behaviour of the bridged connection between WLAN and LAN interfaces. Nothing helped.

Few days ago I have installed DD-WRT and guess what - VPN works both on LAN and WLAN. That would be the answer to my problems, but unfortunately on my HW revision 1.0 DD-WRT works really bad, so I had to switch back to OFW. Even though, I think standard VPN client-server connection should work as expected and changing firmwares is no an ultimate solution.

What do you think?

Answer:TP-Link WDR4300 - VPN connections not allowed while on WiFi

What kind of VPN is it? IPSec or do you run the client directly on your computer?

can you explain what specifically you wanted to do

The router will broadcast a wireless signal - enabling any device to pick up and use the router to access the internet, providing the router is connected to an internet service.

Nothing to do with your PC
The PC is just another device that can connect to the wireless broadcast by the router
But the PC will need to be switched on to do that
Other devices can continue to use the router , even with your PC off
